Postcode lottery as mail going to 'same' address A Filton resident says he is fed up having to redeliver post that is intended for a block of flats on a neighbouring road.

Ian Prowse lives on Braemar Crescent, which also shares a postcode with the nearby flats at Belmont Park. As a result, he regularly experiences post and deliveries being lost or delivered to the flat which shares the same number as his house. After having to solve the problem himself by visiting the flats and speaking to tenants on a regular basis, he has decided to find out whether other residents would support a petition to get one of the roads’ postcodes changed.

Speaking to FiltonVoice, he said: “In order to overcome the current issue, I’ve had to go and speak to the tenants of the flat with the corresponding number as my house, which has provided a solution until they move out and a new tenant moves in and we start the same issue all over again. by Keri Beckingham A cheerleader from Filton is celebrating after reaching the final with team England at an international competition in Florida.

Mollie McMenamin represented Team England Cheer (Level 6) at the USASF Cheerleading and Dance World competition in Orlando in April, with the team coming fifth out of 10 teams in the final. In addition, she also represented the Coventry Dynamite Ammunition team in the International Open Small Coed category, with the team finishing as bronze medallists.

15 year-old Mollie, who goes to Abbeywood Community School and lives on Shellard Road, has been cheering since she was four. She used to be a member of the Predators team that train at the Greenway Centre in Southmead, before deciding to try out for team England. She now travels to Coventry every Friday after school for training, and also travels to London to train with Team England.

Commenting on her latest achievement, her mum Kelly Wynne said: “Mollie has always done cheerleading, she’s a flyer which means that during routines she gets thrown in the air and then caught.

“She loves meeting new people and taking part in competitions, especially having her hair and make-up done.

Because she trains at the weekend, she has plenty of time during the week for her school work, which is really important as she has her GCSES coming up. Cheering keeps her busy, but she proves that if you put your mind to it, anything can be done, and I’m so proud of all of her achievements.”

Kelly also told Filton Voice that after her GCSES Mollie wants to try out for a squad in America. She added: “There are ‘cheer families’ in the US, so she would stay with someone out there. It makes me sad that she wants to travel quite far away, but very proud at the same time.” www.facebook.com/ TeamEnglandCheer

n ELECTIONS 2019 - SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE, FILTON

Filton now red and blue after two recounts as veteran councillor pipped by just one vote

In dramatic scenes and after a second recount, Conservative Chris Wood ousted standing councillor Ian Scott (Labour) by just one vote to claim the second Filton seat on South Glos Council.

Cllr Adam Monk retained his seat, meaning Filton has one Labour and one Conservative councillor.

The declaration night at Bradley Stoke was a tense affair, with Chris Wood ahead of Ian Scott on the first count.

The first recount saw his lead cut to one and it was only after the second recount produced the same result that Mr Scott conceded defeat.

A visibly relieved Cllr Wood spoke to Filtonvoice after the result.

He said: "Ian Scott is a tough act to follow. The campaign has been mentally and physically exhausting and I am grateful to the people of Filton.

"My first priority is my

petition to open up the junction at Station Road and Filton Avenue which I plan to present to Parliament."

Cllr Monk, who topped the poll with 769 votes, said: "It is all about delivering for the community.

"I want to pay tribute to Ian Scott who has been a really good councillor.

"When he spoke, people listened and he will be a loss to the council."

For the other parties, it was a difficult night, and a resurgence for the lib Dems nationally did not translate into votes in Filton.

UKIP also struggled despite the ongoing national debate on Brexit.

A reduction in the numbers of councillors meant Filton was electing two councillors, down from the previous three.

Veteran Labour councillor Roger Hutchinson stood down, leaving Cllr Monk and Mr Scott to fly the Labour flag.

Student James storms to victory for the Lib Dems in new council ward The first elected councillor for the new ward of Cheswick and Stoke Park is James Arrowsmith, a part-time student at UWE. The Lib Dem secured more than 50% of the vote in a threeway battle with the Conservatives and Labour for one seat.

Cheswick and Stoke Park includes UWE, but students failed to engage in the election the university polling station saw just 19 voters turn up out of a possible 250.

Cllr Arrowsmith said: "I am elated at the result.

"I spoke to a lot of people on the cmpaign and I hope I do them justice.

"Parking is a priority and I want to work with UWE and the MoD to tackle the root causes.

"I also want to get businesses into the empty units on teh square in Cheswick and I hope we can work towards getting rents down.This election showed people are disillusioned with national politics and feel let down over things like Brexit."

In second place was Conservative George Maggs.

He said: "Obviously I'm disappointed not to have won, but James fought an energetic campaign and in the end was the clear winner.

"Overall though, I'm pleased the Conservatives managed to retain control of the Council so we can continue to deliver for the people of South Gloucestershire."

n ELECTIONS 2019 - FILTON TOWN COUNCIL, NORTHVILLE AND CHARBOROUGH

Labour retain control of Filton Town Council For Filton Town Council, there will be a familiar look with some new faces sprinkled in to add to the debate.

The political makeup is now eight Labour councillors, three Conservative, one UKIP and one Independent.

The election in Northville say standing councillor and pharmacist Dammy Layade ousted with newcomers Andy Robinson (Ind), Ailsa Jonstone (Lab) and Chris Wood (Cons) joining Labour's Darryl Collins and Mubashar Chaudhry.

In Charborough ward, there was consolation for Ian Scott who lost his South Glos set to Chris Wood as he and his Labour colleagues Adam Monk and newcomer Tom Mewies were elected.

There was no contest in

Conygre ward with just five candidates for the five seats.

All five standing councillors were returned to the council.

At the first meeting of the new council, Darryl Collins was reelected chair and and Alex Doyle as vice-chair.

Issues raised included local campaigner Brian Smith renewing his call for the council to consider installing lifesaving defibrillators at strategic locations around the town.

Cllr Wood said he would like to see an investigation into the possibility of creating a bylaw which would ban drivers from parking on grass verges.

Cllr Scott said one issue would be who enforces such a bylaw.

Carole plans to take seat on parish council

Labour's Carole Greenland will take her seat on Stoke Gifford Parish Council representing Cheswick despite withdrawing from campaigning due to health issues.

A spokesman for the local Labour party said she would take her place and review the situation in the summer.

Cllr Greenland is joined by Labour colleague Simjon Waters and Conservative David Beesley.

Missing out were George Maggs (Cons) and Dayley Lawerence (Lab), who both also were unsuccessful in their bid to be elecged to South Glos. Veteran councillor Trevor Jones also missed out.

Tories again to lead South Glos

Conservatives have unveiled the new administration that will lead South Gloucestershire Council, following the group’s victory in this month’s Local Elections.

With 33 candidates being elected into office on May 2, the Council’s Conservative Group bucked national trends to retain their majority.

The Conservatives now represent 54 per cent of the Council, the same percentage they controlled prior to the election.

Cllr Toby Savage remains Leader of the Council, with Cllr Jon Hunt reappointed as Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People.

Taking on the portfolio for Planning, Transport and Strategic Environment (PTSE) is the Conservative’s former Scrutiny Commission lead member Cllr Steve Reade, while fellow Boyd Valley member Cllr Ben Stokes will resume his work in the modified Cabinet Member role for Adults and Public Health.

Having served for the past year as Chair of the Council and a member of the Scrutiny Commission, Cllr Rachael Hunt has been appointed Cabinet Member for Communities. Fellow former Council Chair, Cllr Erica Williams will be responsible for the Schools, Skills and Employment portfolio.

Newly elected member, IT software developer and former solicitor Cllr Ben Burton will take on the role of Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources.

Nick Lomvardos opened Ocean Catch on Filton Avenue on September 13 2018.

The establishment was formerly known as the Jolly Fryer, which was owned by Nick’s family since 1986.

He worked there for 24 years before leaving in September 2010 to open the award-winning Bishopston Fish Bar on Gloucester Road.

Speaking about his return to Filton, Nick said: “Since returning to the area I have had a wonderful response. People have enjoyed the award winning fish and chips and new products, but the one thing I was asked for was the original donner kebab we sold. I tried to explain that back in the day we made it fresh every single morning and I wouldn’t go and buy the ready-made rubbish that everyone sells nowadays.

Ruling council group accused of 'abuse of power' Tory politicians in South Gloucestershire have been accused of spending council funding on publicity for Conservative MPs in what has been described as a “clear abuse of power”.

Local authorities commonly issue media releases to publicise their achievements, but these are meant to be impartial and nonpolitical.

Last month, the Tory-led South Gloucestershire Council made changes to its media protocol allowing local MPs to appear in publicity photos and press releases alongside cabinet members and ward councillors.

Council leader Toby Savage, who leads the Conservative group, said: “There are those issues where we do work closely with our members of parliament and it’s right that on those occasions [that] the

communications are joint.

“We’ll take a sensible approach on a case-by-case basis when it’s suitable to do so.”

But opposition councillors expressed their fears that only Conservative MPs would be invited to appear in council press releases.

And they raised concerns, citing past experiences, that MPs would be allowed to “muscle in on” publicity for community achievements in which they had played no part.

Liberal Democrat leader Claire Young said it was “unacceptable” to use council press releases to promote MPs. “This is a clear abuse of power and council resources by a Conservative administration which has no respect for what is right and proper,” Ms Young said.

“I don’t think that when

residents pay their council tax bill they expect it to go on subsidising party political publicity for Conservative MPs.” Labour deputy leader Ian Boulton, who represents Staple Hill and Mangotsfield, warned the Conservatives that opposition members would be keeping a close eye on which MPs were invited to be in publicity materials.

Both the Lib Dem and Labour groups tried unsuccessfully to block the change to the media protocol allowing MPs to be involved in council publicity.

However, the Labour group’s suggestion that ward councillors should be allowed in publicity shots was adopted after Cllr Savage admitted that the idea “had merit”.

Cllr Boulton said he had attended “celebrations of my hard work as a councillor” where

he was not allowed to be in the official photographs because he was not a cabinet member.

The media protocol now states: “Photographs commissioned by the council for publicity purposes will normally feature the relevant cabinet member and/or chair of the council but local MPs and councillors for the ward may be invited to appear with cabinet members in photos and be mentioned in any associated press release.”

The meeting was the first after local elections on May 2. Cllr Savage, who represents Longwell Green, was elected leader of the council.

Conservative councillor for Stoke Gifford Brian Allinson was elected chair of the council.

Filton councillor Chris Wood was appointed chair of audits and accounts.

ALL GARDENS Family escape after car on driveway set alight in Filton street A family escaped from their home in Filton after two men set their car alight.

The suspects were seen walking into Sixth Avenue with a canister before pouring the contents, believed to be petrol or a similar accelerant, onto the car and setting it alight.

Now police are appealing for information following the incident, which happened on Friday May 3, shortly after 10pm.

A police spokesman said: "Two men were reported to be carrying a large cube-shaped white canister, which they carried into Sixth Avenue.

"They poured, what was believed to be an accelerant over a vehicle parked on a driveway

of a house, which they set fire to.

"The vehicle was destroyed and extensive damage caused to the house. Occupants in the property managed to escape without injury.

"The suspects then left and walked to Filton Avenue before turning left towards Horfield.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident or has information to help our enquiries.

"We would particularly like to hear from anyone who may have sold or loaned a large white cube-shaped canister around this time."

Two men who were arrested on suspicion of arson have been released under investigation.

Double recognition for top volunteer David

Filton volunteer David Bell has won a third prestigious award for his volunteering.

He won the South Gloucestershire Council Chair's award 2019 in the long service category for his volunteering for Shopmobility South Gloucestershire, along with his Shopmobility colleague Martin Monk, a former chairman of the organisation.

David has been a founding Trustee of Shopmobility South Glos since 2004, and is currently Vice Chairman.

Filton speed camera is most active in residential areas

by Amanda Cameron BBC Local Democracy Reporter Police have revealed the whereabouts of the most active speed cameras in the Bristol region in the past year - with one in Filton issuing the most notices and fines in South Glos other than those on motorways.

The camera on the A38 at Gaynor Avenue, near the Tesco Express, led to 1,941 notices issued in 2018/19 and 471 fines.

Notices can lead to the driver either attending a speed awareness course or electing to challenge in court.

More than 550, mostly mobile, speed cameras operate across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, and Bath and North East Somerset.

And some of them are prolific, detecting thousands of speeding offences every year.

The data describing which cameras detected the most speeding offences in 2018/19 was provided by Avon and Somerset Police in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.

Not all offences are dealt with by way of a fine.

In Bristol a speed camera on the M32 was the most active in the region for the second year running.

In South Gloucestershire a speed camera on the M4 between the exits for Bristol and Almondsbury was the most active in South Gloucestershire last year, resulting in more than 12,300 tickets.

Nearly 4,000 speeding fines were issued by the camera on the carriageway eastbound at J20-19.

It has detected more speeding offences than any other camera in South Gloucestershire for three out of the last four years.

Caller threatened to burn down 999 worker's home

I

’m under no illusion how difficult policing is and the challenging circumstances our police officers and emergency services face on a daily basis to keep our communities safe.

However, it’s not just our colleagues on the frontline who face abuse; abusive calls to 999 and 101 call handlers is on the rise.

Unfortunately, our call handlers have come to expect swearing and name-calling but in more serious cases some of our call handlers have received death threats and threats of rape.

One individual even threatened to burn down a call handler’s house with her children inside. The reality that our call handlers face is unacceptable.

Our call handlers, who go above and beyond to protect us from harm, deserve to come to work without being worried about potential abuse they might face during their shift. They deserve

Nationally, there has been an increase in 999 calls and within Avon and Somerset we have seen an 8% year on year increase. This 8% equates to approximately an extra 48 calls every day or an additional five hours of call handling per day.

Disappointingly, some 999 calls are not emergencies and some are even hoaxes. We need to remember that non-emergency calls to 999 could be blocking a real emergency and this is deadly serious.

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens to be treated with respect and we all need to show support to these individuals who work so hard to keep our communities safe.

In May, we supported Mental Health Awareness Week.

Many mental health charities now believe that people are more aware and feel more empowered to tackle mental health. It is great that people now feel empowered to speak out about their experiences in schools, workplaces and in their communities but we now need to turn this awareness

into action. We know that mental health services are woefully underfunded and those experiencing a mental health problem wait an extremely long time to be able to access the treatments and the services they need.

This all has an impact on our stretched emergency services, particularly policing. In Avon and Somerset, on average, an incident involving someone in a mental health crisis will take four and a half hours of an officer’s time.

The majority of contact when someone is experiencing a mental health crisis into the police is by the communications centre as 101 or 999 calls. The average time on these calls is 77.9% higher than the average call.

'I've been hacked' says controversial ex-councillor A Filton-based former UKIP councillor says he is being hacked by 'Communist' groups who have posted inflamatory messages on his Twitter account.

Mr Winter, who again stood for Almondsbury Parish Council and for Filton on South Glos Council but was not elected, was being investigated by the party before the election over the latest Tweet, which he told Filtonvoice 'had nothing to do with me'.

The investigation comes two years after the party suspended Mr Winter over a tweet that called for “darkies” to be deported.

South Gloucestershire Council cleared him of breaching the council’s code of conduct over the matter because they could not be sure he was tweeting in his capacity as a councillor.

Mr Winter subsequently changed his Twitter account from @Cllr-Winter to @Philip.WinterUKIP but continued to express

his controversial views.

In the latest incident, last month, a post on the account referred to a black man as “degenerate subhuman trash”.

The nowdeleted tweet was in reply to a message from a self-described “pro-God, pro-life” American woman. She had shared a video of a man simulating sex while pressed up against a female police officer, with the message: “Welcome to #Europe2019! African migrant having fun with a British police officer! Wake up America!” @Philip.Winter-UKIP replied on April 25 with the message: “A severe thrashing for that bastard…on his way OUT to catch the Banana boat home!

UKIP confirmed they were investigating Mr Winter ahead of the elections but he told Filtonvoice 'UKIP are not investigating me - I've heard nothing about that."

The local UKIP branch was approached for a comment but did not respond.

Last September, Mr Winter said he stood by views on Twitter that Bristol was 'a terribly awful

city from evening onwards, and full of perverts, disease riddled prostitutes from the local universities, brigands and dangerous looking foreigners."

At the time he said it was done in the heat of the moment and he should have used different language, but he stuck with the basic point.

The tweet came as it emerged that Mr Winter was the subject of a recent investigation by South Gloucestershire Council.

Three councillors had accused him of verbally aggressive behaviour at a parish council meeting in May 2018, according to a leaked report seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. But the investigation was unable to prove or disprove the allegations because none of the witnesses could recall exactly what had been said.

Out-of-this-world opportunity at library Filton Library and others across South Gloucestershire Libraries are looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to join the team running Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019.

Volunteers will spend their time supporting children to do the Summer Reading Challenge, talking with them about the books they’re reading and helping at a range of fun activities in the library.

Mason, who volunteered last summer said “The excitement of reading that children still have or had gained by the end of the summer reading challenge was a joy to see."

More than 5,000 children took part in last year’s Summer Reading Challenge

helped by 60 volunteers. The theme of this year’s challenge is Space Chase – our super space family, the Rockets, need children’s help to track down books that have been nabbed

by Aliens! As children read 6 library books over the summer they collect special stickers to complete their mission.

As DLM, supporting the Sports & Leisure Centre Manager, you will be responsible for the day to day operations of the Club and management of the Leisure team. You will be focussed on providing a great Leisure experience for our visitors.

You will display great leadership & organisational skills and be able to follow Centre Standard Operating Procedures and HR policies. You will ensure Risk Assessment and Health & Safety procedures are followed & updated and train staff in aspects of legislation and industry guidelines. You will be responsible for staff rotas, working within budgets and the security of the site.

What we are looking for: The successful candidate will be a strong communicator focussed on delivery of leisure site operations, with excellent customer service skills and a positive ‘can do’ attitude.

You will need to have: • Previous experience working in a Leisure Club, managing/supervising leisure operations & staff.

• NPLQ, FAAW. • NVQ Level 3 in leisure operations, or equivalent, or working towards.

• Strong IT skills, able to produce reports and familiar with budgets.

• Willing to learn.

Swim teaching, RLSS Trainer Assessor qualifications and pool plant management qualifications to Level 2 are desirable. A Standard DBS check will be required.

n NEWS The vision for an arena in Filton has been unveiled - with developers YTL Arena saying it will put the Bristol area on the 'world stage'.

A rigorous selection process took several months, with Grimshaw, in partnership with Manica Architecture, emerging as the successful team to deliver the arena for Bristol by repurposing the Brabazon hangars at the former Filton airfield.

The arena project team aims to submit a full planning application in the coming months.

The team driving forward plans to create a new arena and put Bristol on the world stage have also appointed landscape architects Grant Associates and planning consultants Avison Young to help support them through the planning process, as well as structural and technical engineers and specialist consultants.

Design team revealed who will create 'visionary' arena on former Filton Airfield said: ‘We are very excited to announce our design team. This represents a very positive step forward for us. We are now working up our firm proposals to repurpose the Brabazon hangars to create a visionary arena that will put Bristol on the world stage.

"Grimshaw architects bring with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise having worked on the award winning Eden Project, Thermae Bath Spa in Bath, Wimbledon, and is currently working on The Engine Shed 2 in Bristol."

Grimshaw will be working in partnership with Manica Architecture who are industry leaders in next-generation arenas and stadia, having recently designed the Chase Center in

San Francisco, home of the NBA Golden State Warriors, and the Las Vegas NFL Stadium, the new home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The arena will also form part of a wider transformation of the former Filton airfield.

Called Brabazon, the airfield will become a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol neighbourhood with more than 2,600 homes, creative workplaces and a town centre set amongst landscaped public squares and parkland.

More than ÂŁ100 million is being invested to improve local infrastructure: a new railway station will connect to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes and a dedicated Metrobus will run straight to the city centre.

Now it's national glory target for handball stars Orchard School handball players are eyeing national glory after winning the South West regional title this month in Paignton.

The under 13 team, which earlier this year were named Bristol champions, will now head to Derby in June to face the best teams in the country.

Meanwhile the under 15 team narrowly missed out of qualifying for the national finals, but with the bulk of this team still in Year 9 they will be well placed for next year.

The under 13s won all four of their games in Paignton, including a dramatic finale in one of the qualifying rounds when the opposing team’s equalising goal was ruled out as time was up.

The Orchard team won their heats 10-6, 5-4 and 9-4.

In the final, the lads took a 9-2 lead at half time and

although their opponents came back, they held off to take the title 9-6.

Coach Tom Fisher said: “Both teams are a really good bunch who have played together for some time and are just getting

better and better.

“We also have strong Year 7s coming through so the future is bright.

“The SW finals was made up of teams from schools from all over Cornwall, Devon, Dorset,

Bristol, Somerset and South Glos. " Team member Charlie said: “There is really good spirit in the team and we are looking forward to playing on the national stage.

“We thought it would be a hard competition but we worked hard and came out on top after a tough final.”

Orchard has a growing reputation in handball with former student Max Grant now representing England.

Last year both teams reached the South West finals.

Handball is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team.

A standard match consists of two periods, and the team that scores more goals wins.

My name’s Denise Beckingham and my freelance business is Busy Business Support.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background Having spent an extensive career in retail banking and investments, I diversified into accounting, having managed the accounts for a local club for 11 years.

I studied AAT and was employed for 4 ½ years as management accountant for a local company until I felt that the time was right to freelance and start up my own business.

What are the main problems facing small business owners?

I can only speak for freelancers but

you have to be prepared for peaks and troughs. The peaks mean you have to be realistic as to how much work you can actually take on at any one time, be totally honest and try to negotiate a longer timescale.

When I have periods of having less work I revert to temporary or part-time, private job adverts.

This is a brilliant way of building relationships too.

What can you offer to ease the pressure?

The biggest pressure businesses have is managing late payers which has a seriously detrimental effect on cashflow. This is a particular problem for new start-ups and is an area I can certainly help with and have achieved great results for businesses I’ve worked with.

Mckenzie now eyeing up a successful career An apprentice at a Filton optician is encouraging other school leavers to consider an earnwhile-you-learn approach after starting an exciting career in optics.

The team in Filton recently celebrated the success of their apprentice, 18-year-old Mckenzie Turley, who finished her Specsavers apprenticeship and qualified to her full-time professional role as an optical assistant.

"After learning in a classroom setting for so many years, I was keen to get some hands-on experience, and the apprenticeship at Specsavers in Filton was the perfect opportunity to do just that," said Mckenzie.

"While the work was challenging at times, thanks to the support of the team I felt confident about being thrown in and developing my knowledge and I loved it.

"Apprenticeships are a great alternative to university.

I would strongly recommend the Specsavers Apprenticeship Programme to anyone looking for a varied and interesting career."

Now that Mckenzie has qualified as an optical assistant, she will study towards her Cert 3 optical exams, which involves a year of more in-depth study about contact lenses.

"We are so proud of Mckenzie," said Filton store manager Maria Matuszak.

"She has come so far over the past year, and there was no question that we would keep her on as a full-time employee after she completed her apprenticeship. It has enabled her to get a well-rounded knowledge of the business and develop her skills in many areas."

I” The roadworks will take place in three sections over three weeks, and access to buildings will change between each section.

I was honoured to be re-elected to represent Filton on South Gloucestershire Council, and want to pay tribute to my Labour colleague Ian Scott, who lost by a single vote.

South Gloucestershire Council was scheduled to meet for the first time in late May. All 61 councillors are getting new IT equipment which is part of the council’s drive to cut costs through greater digitisation.

Working with groups and residents to address issues has not ceased. For example I am assisting the Air Cadets with a project to create a parade ground in their HQ in Pine Grove. Additionally, I am assisting Filton Park Pre-School address the issue of their building and how an Early Years Provision continues with the pending sale of the land.

It is agreed that the school will be gifted some land to create a playing field. Within the plans there will be a facility for Early Years Provision.

I will continue as Labour’s Lead Member for Corporate Resources. I will also lead for the Party on the Audit & Accounts Committee and continue as a Director of Integra, which provides support services to schools.

James Arrowsmith, Lib Dem, Cheswick and Stoke Park Since I was elected at the beginning of May, I’ve been bowled over by the number of kind messages I’ve received.

It was a hard-fought election. My opponents, Dayley Lawrence (Labour) and George Maggs (Conservative), both ran strong campaigns and were credit to both themselves, their parties and can hold their heads up high. I also want to take this opportunity to wish them both the very best in their future endeavours and to continue fighting elections and stand for what they believe in.

However, residents across Cheswick and Stoke Park expect action and hard work from their councillor. I want to deliver on that. Residents made it clear during the election that the car parking was inadequate, the empty shops let our area down and the relations and community outreach from UWE and its associated institutions, needs improving and shaking up.

I’ve already received numerous pieces of casework and was hosting a councillor surgery last month at Boston Tea Party. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. To be elected by one vote after two recounts is quite something.

I’d like to pay tribute to both Ian Scott and Roger Hutchinson, whom I know many have a lot of respect for and to recognise that I have been elected by the tiniest of margins on a poor turnout of just 30%.

The election is over, we all live here and I’m sure we agree on far more than those issues which separate us, so I’ll do my very best to work with all councillors and residents regardless of political opinions for the benefit of our area. During the course of the campaign I raised a number of issues such as opening up the Filton Avenue and Station Road junction, sorting out our litter problem, brightening up our high streets and finding a sustainable way to fund our leisure centre so that future generations can continue to enjoy the facilities whilst also reducing the excessive tax burden placed on local residents.

I will work hard alongside colleagues to achieve these objectives.

Sir Mo launches Filton hotel's community plan Sir Mo Farah, Baroness Karren Brady and Great British Bake Off star Candice Brown spent the day at Village Hotel Bristol in Filton as the national hotel chain launched the next phase of their Village Green community campaign.

The three ambassadors will each spearhead new activities for the hotel’s community outreach, through a series of fitness, business and hospitality initiatives designed to support local charities.

The launch follows the recent announcement of an official charity partnership between Village Hotel Bristol and Young Bristol where the Filton hotel will donate over 1,000 employee hours to the charity over the course of 2019.

Calling for greater access to fitness facilities at a local level, Olympic champion Sir Mo met with local school children from

Little Stoke Primary School giving them tips to staying fit and healthy. The Olympic gold medalist introduced a new fitness class, Motion, that has been designed to motivate all ages to take care of their health.

Great British Bake Off winner Candice met with students from South Gloucester College to launch the new Hospitality Heroes campaign. Brown offered hands on mentorship to the college’s culinary students, enabling them to put their studied theory into practice.

Hospitality Heroes will see Village Hotel Bristol offer mentorship, skills training and work experience in the hospitality industry to local students.

Launching Village Hotel’s VWorks Awards, a pitchstyle competition coming this autumn that will celebrate local businesses by donating

investment to local winners, The Apprentice star Baroness Karren Brady led a workshop on how small business entrepreneurs can thrive in their industries.

Mark McMahon, general manager of Village Hotel Bristol said: “This action packed day launched the next phase of our Village Green campaign – so we can better serve the local Filton and Bristol community we

operate in. We hope through our new programmes – which have been co-created in partnership with our new ambassadors – we’ll be able to help upskill and inspire people in our community and help put us even more at the heart of local life.”

n NEWS FROM SPLATTS ABBEY WOOD

Volunteers reflect on another successful year At the end of another academic year, the Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group and its partners are looking back on another successful year at the historic local woodland, which is beside the MoD and Cheswick Village.

The Conservation Group is made up of a small committee which includes local residents, representatives from the UWE student volunteer group Greenspace and the Students' Union at UWE. Work at the woodland has been done by the Forest of Avon Trust and the Greenspace group, (who are the woodland's principal partners).

The Greenpeace group has been working with Splatts Abbey Wood and other local woodlands since its formation in 2014 in a very successful partnership.

Much of the backlog of work at the woodland has been cleared and the woodland is more accessible than before and is looking great. Before Christmas 2018 the Greenspace group planted a number of young trees at an exposed part of the fencing of the woodland and helped to improve the woodland itself at the same time.

In recent times most of the committee have been honoured with awards for their volunteering. Vice Chairman and Treasurer Fred Hillberg (2015), Secretary Andy Ward (2017), the UWE Greenspace group

UWE Greenspace group Project Leaders with Ecologist Rupert Higgins at Splatts Abbey Wood (2018) and Chairman David Bell (2019) have won the prestigious South Gloucestershire Council Chair's award for their work with the Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group.

he most powerful things in the world can often be traced to their local roots. Behind all of the worthiest projects are dedicated people whose efforts stand invisibly to create something spectacular.

This is particularly true of our new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, the largest warships the Royal Navy has ever built, as well as the various other ships which would escort them on exercises and operations.

I had the privilege of visiting HMS Prince of Wales at Rosyth in Scotland, to see for myself the fruits of the hard work of people across our local area. Of course as many of you will know, the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Equipment and Support body (DE&S) is based at Abbeywood and played a central role in delivering this vessel, including procuring the various sensors and systems on the ships and the aircraft that will fly from them.

engine which powers it was designed and built by RollsRoyce and was tested and will be serviced from their site in Patchway.

Rolls-Royce in Patchway employs staff from right across our area and I am proud to say that we are quite literally the driving force behind Britain’s largest warship.

An update from Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke Thales, based in Stoke Gifford, designed and delivered the FLYCO control tower on HMS Prince of Wales. Acting like an airport’s air traffic control tower, this oversees the operations of all aircraft using the carrier, including landing and take-off.

BAE Systems, the lead member of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance which built the Queen Elizabeth Class carriers, used its networked visualisation suite in Filton to bring together the Ministry of Defence and other partners working together on the ships for design reviews and approvals.

Many of the key decisions that shaped the final delivery of this spectacular project were taken right here in our local area.

L3 MAPPS, based out of Aztec West, Bradley Stoke, provided the marine control systems – the IT and electronics which underpin the aircraft carrier and allow it to move.

Babcock pulled together the wider designs and delivered the ship assembly process, and have produced critical components, including delivering more than 10,000 tonnes of materials to Rosyth for construction.

They have offices in Bristol, as well as Stoke Gifford and Patchway.

These companies and others in our defence and aerospace sectors draw employees from virtually every community in South Gloucestershire.

Through their diligence, working together with partners elsewhere in Britain and indeed internationally, they have put together a warship that will help keep the rest of us safe from those that would do us harm as we go about our daily lives.

Thank you to the workers, loved ones, and wider communities across South Gloucestershire who have helped make this remarkable endeavour possible.

Men in Sheds in Filton is extending its hours to meet demand. The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea. Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. Filton Ladies, We are Filton ladies group, who meet every Thursday, 2pm to 4pm at St Andrew's Church, for a chat and catch up with friends old and new, over a nice cup of tea or coffee and biscuits and would love new ladies to join us. Plus, every 3 rd Thursday we have very interesting speakers when we open up our meeting to nonmembers including men. Why not pop along and meet us, we are a very friendly club.
