My nursery could be forced to close A Filton nursery owner says she could be forced to close her business after receiving an £800 increase in her monthly rent bill from Filton Community Association. Robins Nursery, which looks after 39 pre-school children, has been based in the FCA building at Elm Park since last September. Owner Kerri Robbins said she received an invoice last month for £2,470.73 – an increase of nearly £800 on previous months, when the charge was £1,675. Filton Community Association treasurer David Gillard said Ms Robins had ‘changed her hours’ from six hours per day to 10 hours. He said he was not willing to discuss the matter further. Ms Robbins said she accepted the hours had gone up but her estimate was the bill should be

Nursery owner's fears From Page 1 around £2,000 and that she was willing to speak to the association trustees to negotiate. She said some of the nursery hours were unstaffed and the increase should not be so much. And she added that for some of the time, she does not have access to the larger Leslie Harris room and has to use smaller rooms. In a posting on Facebook she said the situation was not affordable and she told Filtonvoice that if the situation could not be resolved, she would be forced to close the business. Currently she is using space at Filton Leisure Centre for some of the time but Ofsted rules mean she cannot move to new premises without giving six months’ notice. She said: “I just want to protect my nursery and my business. “We have 39 children at the nursery. "We are looking at the

prospect of being unable to continue unless we can negotiate a proper price.” Ms Robbins added that she increased her hours in December, but until now had not received a higher bill. l In a separate matter, last month Filtonvoice revealed the association had been reported to the Charity Commission. A Charity Commission spokesperson said: “The Commission is assessing how the trustees of Filton Community Association (301531) are managing the charity’s finances, after receiving a complaint which highlighted concerns about the governance of the charity. "We are in contact with the charity and have requested further information from them.” Since then, association president Roz Kendall has stepped down from her role. According to the Charity Commission website, the remaining trustees are David Gillard and his wife Margaret Gillard.

Antiques Roadshow comes to Filton by Rebecca Day An antique in its own right, the last ever Concorde to be built served as the perfect backdrop to popular BBC television show Antiques Roadshow last month when it was filmed at the Aerospace Bristol museum. Thousands of people from

As the experts meticulously inspected each antique, guests waited with bated breath, hoping that their item would be worth more than just sentimental value. Any standout objects were then put before the television crew outside in the glorious sunshine. One item that did receive much attention was a painting of the Concorde, owned by Arthur Hall from Easter Compton. Arthur, who owns Concorde House in Patchway Trading Estate, had the painting commissioned in 1963 for Midlands Bank, who were leasing the ground floor of the building. Arthur said: “The plane in the painting is a prototype but people who are familiar with the Concorde have commented how accurate it is, so I thought I would bring it along today to see if it’s worth something.” Arthur said that he has offered the painting to the museum. Carol Griffiths, from Patchway, volunteers at the museum and was a steward for the event. Her father designed a very important element of the Concorde. She said: “I wanted to volunteer at the museum because my dad designed the toilets for the Concorde. Growing up, I also saw the first Concorde to be built in Britain, being constructed here on the airfield in the Brabazon Hangar. “I was really excited when I found out that we would be stewarding here today because I love watching Antiques Roadshow – I value everything! Sometimes I even get it right.” One showstopper was the Bristol Cars, which were manufactured on the site after the war. A truly fascinating story about the cars came from Sir George White, whose family founded the Bristol Aeroplane Company and later developed Bristol Cars to provide jobs for people after the war. Sir George told the Filtonvoice: “In 1941, my grandfather – who took over the Bristol Aeroplane Company from my great grandfather – asked my father to draw up a plan for how they were going to find work for people in the factory after the war.

“It was also the time of Dunkirk, one of the lowest points during the war and an extraordinary moment to start planning for after the war as nobody knew if we’d be under the German jackboot or not. “One of the ideas my father came up with was to build motorcars, because he’d always been keen on them.” Following the war, Bristol Aeroplane Company took

over Frazer Nash – the British importers and assemblers of BMW – and began manufacturing the first Bristol Cars. It was then in 1969 that sadly, Sir George White’s father suffered a serious car accident and the business had to be sold. Sir George, who owns two Bristol Cars – one of which was on show at the Antiques Roadshow, said: “When I was 16,

I was unbelievably lucky to have been given a Bristol 404 2-seater sports car by my father, and I’ve kept it for 55 years. “My son approached me about five years ago, and said, ‘dad, don’t you think it would be a good idea if we rallied your car?’ When was I was 17/18, I had some very near misses, and I thought, do I really want my 20-year-old rallying about in it now?

“So, I suggested to him that we get an old Bristol 400 that we’re not sentimental about. We started looking around and then this car appeared, and extraordinarily, it was the first car that my father sold from the factory. “It was dispatched from Filton 71 years ago yesterday, so that’s why the Antiques Roadshow wanted it here today.” Filtonvoice also spoke with Antiques Roadshow presenter, Fiona Bruce. She told us: “It’s the first time I’ve been at this museum and it’s wonderful. “I was here yesterday – I went in the chopper and filmed on the Concorde simulator, crashed into the Avon Gorge – not so good! “But it’s lovely – a sunny day, lots of people here. Obviously Concorde is here, so people have brought along Concorde memorabilia including the first ticket ever sold to fly on the Concorde. Lloyd Burnell, Executive Director at Aerospace Bristol, said: “As a new museum that celebrates Bristol’s rich aviation heritage, Aerospace Bristol was delighted to host the Antiques Roadshow under the wings of Concorde. We enjoyed a fantastic response from the local community.” Filtonvoice could not reveal what the items mentioned have been valued at - all will be revealed when the show airs. It is not known when the programme, which will be broadcast in two parts, will be televised.

Ethan’s on song for X Factor audition by Keri Beckingham A local singer-songwriter is dreaming big after he recently auditioned for X Factor. Seventeen-year-old Ethan Dalton used to live opposite Filton Hill Primary School and now lives in Charlton Hayes. He taught himself to play the guitar at age 14, and is currently a fulltime first year student at Access Creative College in Hengrove, where he is studying level three music performance. Ethan writes his own songs and composes the music on his guitar, and the recording and production is then done through the college or a local studio. Speaking about his passion for music, Ethan said: “I’ve loved music since I was a kid – Mum says if music was on when I used

to walk past the pub I would stop and dance. I bought my first acoustic guitar for £40 at the start of year 10 and taught myself to play using videos, and eventually I saved up and was able to buy a new guitar at the end of 2016 which was really exciting. “I used to only sing in the shower when no one was home, and I started properly singing when I got my guitar as I realised I had something. I’ve written 100s of songs, and if I don’t like my own song I won’t show it to anyone, but I have three so far that I really love.” The first people to ever hear Ethan sing were his colleagues at the Bailey’s Court Inn pub in Bradley Stoke where he used to work, however his mum, Zoe, has

only heard him perform recently after he announced that he wanted to audition for season 15 of the X Factor. “He has shown amazing potential,” she said. His audition for the ITV talent show took place at Bristol’s Cabot Circus on May 12, where he had to record an audition in a booth with four soundproof walls. Ethan decided to perform one of his own songs, and is expecting to hear on July 25 whether he will go through to the next stage of the process, which will involve performing for the judges themselves. “I’m working as hard on my music as I can at the moment and over the summer I am going to spend most of my time busking in town. Residents needed to help make improvements to Filton BMX track by Keri Beckingham A passionate BMX rider is calling on Filton residents to help him make improvements to a local BMX track. Ricky Seery lives on Filton Avenue with his wife and six year old son. He’s been riding bikes for over 20 years, across disciplines such as trail, skate park and pump track. He currently rides around three times a week and his son also races at Bristol BMX Club in Patchway. Filton residents do have use of a BMX track that was built several years ago at the bottom of Elm Park playing fields. However, it has fallen into disrepair over the years, and Ricky has decided to take action to get it refurbished as he thinks

it would be nice for people to use one closer to home, rather than travelling to other parts of Bristol. After proposing to Filton

Town Council that they should make improvements, he is asking for residents to join him and do the work that is needed instead.

Along with his friend Andy McGill, Rick has met Filton Town Council to discuss his ideas for improving the BMX track, and he has been asked to provide costs for the gravel that is needed. Ricky said: “A group of us built some jumps out at Emersons Green several years ago, and as long as we have the right equipment, materials, and manpower, five of us could do the work at Elm Park ourselves. What we want is a little pump track, and once we start doing it, the work can be finished in a weekend. In addition, Andy works at GKN in Filton, and we are also going to look into the possibility of them helping us get this project off the ground as part of their local community charity scheme.

speedway track at Elm Park but unfortunately, just now, they are little used. That said, the cycle speedway track is often used by kids to learn to ride their bikes, whereas the BMX track is used by the very young. Hopefully they will experience better use during the school summer recess. “There are several projects that Filton residents have

identified to Filton Town Council as something they would like us to provide, but unfortunately, we have no available funding currently. We have identified some funding for extra benches/ seating for our play areas, and we have requested facilities that include a pump track, bandstand, multi use games area (MUGA), running track, covered area for the children’s play area, an extension to our skateboard bowl, a Filton city farm, and community centre that actually serves the community. The list can go on, but it is all captured in our current 50 page Filton Community Plan that is being worked on and shortly to be consulted on. “As previously stated, Filton Town Council are keen to consult on proposals like the pump track, improvements to our BMX track or our skateboard bowl, but these discussions need to include how we raise the required funding.” To get involved in Ricky’s campaign to make improvements to Elm Park’s BMX track, contact him via the Filton News and Views Facebook group.

Arms protesters take to the roof of Airbus “We must stop arming Turkish forces”. That was the message from a group of protesters who occupied Airbus’ rooftops in Filton last month. Banners were hung from the building with images of women who have been killed fighting alongside the Kurdish Women’s Protection Unit (YPJ) in Syria. Among the women’s faces was friend of the protesters, Anna Campbell, from Bristol, who was killed in an airstrike on March 15. Anna was trying to protect civilians fleeing the invasion of Afrin, northern Syria. The action, which was protesting against Airbus’ “ongoing sale of military hardware to the Turkish army”, coincided with a UK visit from

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Airbus manufactures the wings for the A400M military transport aircraft, which have been sold to Turkey. One of the rooftop occupiers, Liz explained: “The Bristol arms industry wants to pretend that the people it kills don’t have stories, so we have brought them the face of our friend, and the heroes who inspired her. “The women of the YPJ have been critical in liberating the world from ISIS and have been repaid with betrayal. We are here to shout their names from the rooftops. Anna Campbell, Sara Merdîn, Serhildan, Arîn Mîrkan, Barîn Kobanê, we honour you and we miss you.”

The idea for the protest – of occupying the roof of a Bristol arms manufacturer with pictures of casualties of conflicts – was one that Anna had been involved in discussing several years ago. Rooftop occupier Paul said: “It’s simple. We have to stop arming Turkey. Now.” In the Bristol Post, a spokesperson from Airbus said: “Early this morning [on May 15] a group of seven demonstrators staged a peaceful

protest at Airbus’ Filton site. Airbus security and local police are currently working together to bring the protest to a safe conclusion.” The group sent out updates of the protest via the hashtag #ErdoganNotWelcome. A protest was also being held in central London by Kurdish community groups and supporters during Erdogan’s meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May.

Village chosen for first bus and driverless car trial The Venturer consortium has carried out a pioneering driverless vehicle demonstration in Cheswick Village involving wireless communication between a bus and car which tested ‘look ahead’ functionality. Venturer undertook the UK’s first on-road demonstration of a driverless car interacting with a bus. The innovative trial was the first of its kind and took place on Long Mead in Cheswick, a 30mph bus-only road that follows the south west perimeter of UWE’s Frenchay campus. The demonstration involved the Venturer Wildcat (a BAE vehicle equipped with connected and autonomous technology), a single-decker bus provided by First Bus UK and another unmodified vehicle. The aim was to test ‘look ahead’ functionality, where the autonomous system, including sensors (provided by

Fusion Processing), a wireless communications system (provided by the University of Bristol) and the vehicle’s Decision Making System (DMS) (provided by the Bristol Robotics Laboratory), enabled the Wildcat

This is not a new development: We are currently in the process of installing an innovative safety feature called CycleEye on Metrobus vehicles, developed by Fusion, which will alert bus drivers when cyclists are on the near side of the vehicle.”

Extra hours at Filton GP practices By Gary Rogers, Data Reporter All patients have some access to a doctor's appointment at weekends or outside normal hours on a weekday, thanks to extended hours offered by GPs in the area covered by South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group. The extended hours being rolled out across England allow patients to book an appointment on Saturday, Sunday, or on weekdays before 8am and after 6.30pm. At Stoke Gifford and Conygre Medical Centre, from June 15, there will be 'extended hours' appointments with a range of clinicians between 7.30-8am on Wednesdays (Conygre) and Tuesday/Thursday (Stoke Gifford). Northville Family Practice on Filton Avenue opens until 8pm Monday-Wednesday and 'occasionally' on Sundays,

according to its website. The data was gathered by the NHS from 96% of GP practices in England. In South Gloucestershire CCG, 20 practices with a total of 220,988 registered patients reported their results. The Government says that everyone should have "more convenient access to GP services, including appointments at evening and weekends." It has set a target date of October 1st for all patients to have access to extended hours. Dr Richard Vautrey, BMA

GP committee chair, said: "While schemes like this are rolled out and are successful in providing the services they are commissioned to do, we still believe the money invested in such programmes would be better spent improving core GP services. "We know that patients are frustrated with being unable to get timely appointments during regular working hours, owing to increased demand and unmanageable GP workloads, and therefore it is these services

that should be a priority for proper funding." There are 7,153 GP practices in England. Currently, just over 6,000 of them offer some access to appointments on Saturdays, Sundays and during extended weekday hours. The best record is in Herefordshire, and Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire where all patients can make appointments in extended hours seven days a week. The poorest record is in South Sefton on Merseyside, where no patients have access to extended hours every day. In most instances, practices get together to form hubs or federations that provide the service, so patients may not see their usual doctor. The most common day for extended hours to be offered in South GloucestershireG is Thursday. The least common day is Sunday.

Cubs' solutions to air pollution problems

Filton Cubs and staff from the University of West of England came together last month to discuss air quality and its impacts on health, ahead of the first National Clean Air Day taking place on June 21. Air pollution has been shown to exacerbate lung and heart conditions as well as affecting the brain development of young children. The two major causes of air pollution are particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide gas. The Cubs did an experiment

which mimics those which scientists do in laboratories to test for nitrogen dioxide, comparing samples which might be found in a park and a busy road. Since traffic is the major source of air pollution in Bristol, the air quality on busy roads is significantly worse than in green spaces. The Cubs then set to thinking about ways we can solve the air pollution problem. Favourite ideas included walking and cycling more often and using electric vehicles.

In preparation for its centenary in 2019, a local swimming club is collecting people’s memories of Henleaze Lake. Henleaze Swimming Club was established as a swimming club in 1919, and people from Filton and beyond have been swimming and ice-skating at the lake from possibly as early as 1906. The nine-acre site is owned and managed by the swimming club, who have approximately 2,200 swimming members. Its principal activity is open-water swimming, and the club also manages a stock of general coarse fish at the lake, with facilities provided for anglers. In celebration of its 100th birthday, the club would love to hear from past members and others who have memories of the lake to add to their archives, especially those who have old photographs of the lake or artefacts associated with the club. The club has an extensive collection of photographs of the lake but very few of the lake during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and would be keen to see any from this period. The centenary will also be marked with the publication of a new book and an exhibition documenting the club’s history in 2019. As part of the memories project, the club will also be holding a Lake Memories event at the lake on Wednesday, June 13, from 1pm to 4pm, where guests with past associations to the club will enjoy tea and cakes on the lawns, guided tours of the lake and the possibility of meeting up with old friends. Community garden pond dedicated to memory of Bill Moore The Community Garden’s newest addition the wildlife and nature pond will be officially opened at the Tea and Cakes in the Garden event on 10 June, see poster on Page 42. The pond is dedicated to Bill Moore who was the founder and inspiration behind the garden. As many will know, Bill passed away earlier this your after a long illness. Much of Bill’s last few months were spent in St Peter’s Hospice and the Community Garden Committee felt it appropriate that all proceeds of the event should be donated to the Hospice. The pond was dug out by Committee members with the assistance of some Airbus

volunteers who also help with digging and reseeding the wildflower meadow. We are very grateful to them. The pond is only three days old at the time of writing, but it is already becoming a great attraction for children and adults alike. Once it gets established we hope that it will be abundant with insect life... that’s if the carnivorous plants don’t eat them all. If anyone would like to donate cakes to the event we would be extremely grateful. Pease put the date in your diaries, come and enjoy the garden, meet up with old friends and have a nice cup of tea. It stimulates the development of the muscles, bones and joints, as well as the heart and lungs. It helps children maintain a healthy weight. It gives them an opportunity to interact with other people and make friends. It can help children manage symptoms of anxiety and depression. Whatever stage of life you're currently at, there are plenty of different exercise options to try. Exercise doesn't just mean going to the gym or heading out for a run. It may be as simple as walking to and from the shops instead of getting in the car or getting off the bus a few stops earlier. Even doing a little more exercise than usual can help reduce your risk of certain long-term health conditions. And it doesn't have to be time-consuming. By becoming more active throughout your day, you can quite easily achieve the recommended activity levels. n NEWS IN BRIEF Community forum The Filton and Patchway Community Engagement Forum was told that shoplifting at Asda remains a big concern for police. PC Sean White told the meeting that they had also been investigating drugs use in College Way and near the Elm Eats cafe at Elm Park, by the play area. PC White also said vandals had been attacking greens at Filton Golf Club, near the Southmead end of the course. And he added work vans had been targeted for high value tools in the Kenmore/Braemar parts of Filton Park. The meeting again heard from residents who live near the rush hour no entry sign at Kenmore Drive. One resident said consideration should be given to local people who live in the street as they face receiving a traffic ticket along with those who use the road as a rat run. The late-afternoon restriction has long been controversial, with many drivers ignoring it

and police resources meaning it cannot be monitored every day. Concerns were also raised about mess behind Greggs and Papa Johns in Glos Rd North. In a report, Cllr Roger Hutchinson said steps were being taken to move responsibility to the retailers.

Determined students complete expedition The threat of rain didn’t dampen students' excitement for their Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. The team tackled tough and hilly terrain, and chilly temperatures, as they embarked on their training run for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. It was an early start for the 14 students – from Years 9 and 10 – who headed to the Mendips for two days of trekking and a night of camping. On arrival, they received all the necessary training and equipment for the weekend, and then made their way to the campsite for the evening. At camp, they were required to make their own dinners and independently plot their routes for the next day. On the final day, students put their newly acquired skills to the test, by trekking to the pick-up point in small groups.

The expedition was to prepare the students for their final expedition this summer, which they must pass to achieve their Bronze award. Kirsty Newcombe, OSB’s Duke of Edinburgh co-ordinator, said: “It was a very cold weekend – on the night we camped, it went down to below freezing! “But our students kept going, showing great resilience and endless determination throughout.

“The weekend was a great opportunity for our students to put into practice their skills, such as map reading, in preparation for their final expedition in July." Spence Wewe, Year 9, said: “The weekend was full of fun challenges and beautiful scenery. "Overall, it was an amazing experience and I got to learn new skills such as map reading and how to use a compass.” Yasmine Lasku, Year 10, said:

“Duke of Edinburgh is great for developing important life skills, for example, learning how to be more independent and being able to cope with various challenges and time pressures.” Mallory Williams, Year 10, said before the expedition: ““I believe this experience will help develop my skills in problem solving, teamwork and communication, and will look great on my CV.”

GIRL POWER: Students had a blast last month when EDF Energy visited Orchard School to talk about nuclear power and career opportunities. The day began with Year 8s learning about the careers available at EDF and culminated in students creating their own vehicles, to be fired off a ramp while encasing a hard boiled egg. The two winning teams then went head to head to relaunch their vehicles - but this time, with an uncooked egg inside. Launching theirs the furthest, without breaking the egg, was the girls' team. The activity aimed to demonstrate the process behind carrying delicate materials safely. It helped students experiment creatively with design, taking into

account the science needed to land the egg without breaking it. Caroline, who was part of the winning group, said: "I found this day useful because it taught me new skills in engineering and I was able to apply the knowledge I have already gained from science lessons." Simon Kettle, director of STEMWorks who delivered the session, said: "EDF Energy were delighted to work with the students at the Orchard School and tell them about the career opportunities at the new power station being built at Hinkley Point C. Working in teams, students were able to use their problem solving and science skills while making their compressed air powered vehicles. The day was great fun."

Baby care unit hosts ‘kangaroo-care-athon’ NEO-natal nurses dressed up as kangaroos today to promote skin to skin bonding for premature babies and to raise money for special body wraps for parents to aid baby’s development and reduce illness. Staff in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Southmead Hospital are raising money for Southmead Hospital Charity by dressing as Kangaroos to promote ‘Kangaroo Care’, a method of caring for stabilised low-weight or premature babies outside incubators. As part of International Kangaroo Care Awareness Day on Tuesday May 15, the team will also be hosting a cake sale and a ‘kangaroo-care-athon’ where parents on the unit will be encouraged hold their babies skin to skin. Kangaroo care aids baby’s development, promotes parent and baby interaction, reduces the baby’s risk of illness and helps

them to maintain a healthy body temperature. And each baby on the NICU will be given a kangaroo book, mug and toy - funded by

Southmead Hospital Charity to promote the International Kangaroo Care Awareness initiative. Southmead Hospital Charity

has also funded reclining chairs for parents to lie with their babies to facilitate skin to skin contact. Michelle Jackson, NICU matron, said: “Kangaroo care has been found to have huge benefits for baby - to reduce instances of infection, hypothermia, lower respiratory tract disease and reduce the length of stay in hospital. It also increases weight gain, brain development and helps with breathing, heart rate, and blood sugar regulation as well as contributing to more successful breastfeeding. “Parents who do kangaroo care find it a very satisfying way to bond with and nurture their baby, particularly after spending their first weeks in an incubator. “We hope to be able to buy each parent a special kangaroo sling to use while on the unit.” You can support NICU via www.southmeadhospitalcharity. org.uk/NICU

Clothes Throw is helping to find way to beat cancer Slimming World have recently held a ‘Clothes Throw’ for Cancer Research, collecting more than 200 bags from members locally. The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw celebrates weight loss success by inviting Slimming World members across its 16,000 groups to donate the clothes they have slimmed out of – and they know they won’t need again – to Cancer Research UK shops. At the end of another academic year the Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group are reflecting on another great year. The organisation has recruited new committee members, and it is continuing to work with existing partners in the area. And most importantly the group and its partners have helped to improve and develop the historic Splatts Abbey Woodland, which is to be found near the MoD and Cheswick Village. At the start of 2018 the Forest of Avon Trust, FoAT, held another six-week project in the wood with people with learning difficulties. Toby to serve as new leader for the council Councillor Toby Savage has been elected as council leader at South Gloucestershire Council’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), after Councillor Matthew Riddle, inset, stepped down from his position as leader of the Conservative group. Following Matthew’s decision not to stand for reelection, Cllr Savage was elected as the new group leader at the group’s AGM ast month. As the leader of the Conservatives, who are the largest group on the council, Cllr Savage also leads an administration as the council leader. Commenting on his appointment, Cllr Savage said

Cllr Riddle would be a hard act to follow, adding: “It’s a great honour to be elected as council leader and I am looking forward to leading the authority through the challenges which lie ahead. “I’d also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Matthew’s leadership over these past few years and thank him for the dedication and commitment he has shown in carrying out this role.” Cllr Riddle will continue to serve as a councillor for South Gloucestershire Council, representing Severn ward. The AGM is also the time to elect a new chairman and vice chairman for the coming year. Cllr Rachael Hunt was

Other key appointments saw Cllr Jon Hunt elected as deputy leader of the council. And there were two changes to cabinet posts with Cllr Rob Creer appointed as cabinet member for corporate resources, replacing Cllr John Goddard. Cllr Paul Hughes was appointed as cabinet member for communities and tourism, replacing Cllr Heather Goddard. Cllrs John and Heather Goddard will continue to serve as councillors for South Gloucestershire Council, representing Hanham ward.

More patients to get NHS treatment at home People living in and around Filton and Southmead are getting acute healthcare in the comfort of their own homes under a new initiative from North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT). Backed by research showing patients recover faster in comfortable and familiar environments, the NBT “Hospital at Home” service has been caring for some surgical patients in their own home instead of a hospital bed. Since launching in January, a team of team of specially-trained nurses has been working closely with eligible patients and their doctors to develop personalised care plans. Patients get frequent visits at least once a day and ongoing telephone support, and remain under the care of their consultant until they are ready to be discharged, as they would on a ward. In the past three months, 100 patients, all living within 45 minutes’ drive of Southmead Hospital, have been treated and discharged through the scheme. There has been excellent feedback from patients who have said they have felt more relaxed, felt more in control of their own lives and enjoyed being with their families. It has also freedup beds for other patients, and saved an estimated 483 bed days so far. The aim is that on the day patients are admitted to hospital, they receive an estimated date of discharge, so they can go home as early as possible and make the necessary arrangements with relatives and carers. Director of Nursing Sue Jones said: “Hospital is often the last place patients want to be but sadly too many people experience delays and longer periods of hospitalisation than necessary. Getting patients up and dressed in their own clothes can make a huge difference to their physical recovery and mental well-being.”

Financial boost for mental health services An extra £365,000 will be invested during 2018/19 in mental health services across South Gloucestershire and surrounding areas following a successful bid by the local CCG to NHS England. It follows an evaluation of the HOPE pilot suicide prevention project run in conjunction with Public Health England and local voluntary sector organisations. The HOPE project offers support to people whose mental health is affected by financial difficulties. “This funding is vital if we are to end the tragedy of suicide in the area,” said Dr Peter Brindle, Medical Director of BNSSG (Bristol, North Somerset and South Glos) CCG. “It will allow the CCG, the universities, Public Health and the voluntary sector to work together to make a real impact on this important issue.” “In light of the recent rise in

suicides and self-harm in young people nationally and locally, we have agreed to use some of this money to support suicide prevention initiatives aimed at those in the universities and FE colleges in the area." Funds will also be used to focus on men, as a local high risk group, in two ways. The first is through a new service offering psychosocial intervention to address acute distress created by financial, employment or welfare difficulties. This will be done through the expansion of the HOPE project. The funding will also be used to raise mental health awareness and wellbeing for men in the area. The CCG will work closely with Public Health and the voluntary sector to promote suicide prevention training in particular industries, such as construction.

It is an initiative driven by Age UK and will be similar to the "Men in Sheds" group, who meet weekly in Nutfield Grove Scout Hut and practice their DIY skills together.
