Harvey’s home again, thanks to the community by Rebecca Day They say Friday 13 is unlucky for some – and it certainly was for a local family who lost their cherished pup while out for a walk. But thanks to the support of the Filton community, the Hodgsons have now been reunited with little Harvey, who is now home safe and sound, pretending nothing ever happened. The shih tzu cross bichon frise rescue dog went missing on his walk in Elm Park for an agonising four days, and was finally discovered under an oil tanker in a back garden. Missing posters were plastered around the local neighbourhood, with calls being put out on social media to find
the two-year-old pooch. Owner Jackie said that the support she received from the community had been “amazing” and thanked Sue Wood from Lost and Found

Pets in Bristol and South Glos in particular for being so active in raising awareness on Facebook. One post was shared 800 times in a bid to track down young Harvey. Jackie, who owns Paws and Claws dog groomers in Horfield, said: “Our son was walking Harvey in Elm Park when another dog tried to play with him. As Harvey’s a rescue dog, he can get quite nervous, so he just ran away, and shot across the dual carriageway. Luckily it was closed at the time. “We went out looking for him straight away, but we had no luck. He was spotted in Filton Avenue on the Saturday evening, and again on Sunday morning by the university. “Two men tried to catch him behind the Sainsbury’s in Harry Stoke but, again, he ran away.” Camping out in fields, and waking up at 5am, were just some of the lengths Jackie and her husband went to in their efforts to get Harvey back. “It was on Monday evening that we received a call from a

Help find Howie
Have you seen Howie? He’s a seven-year-old blue-point Siamese cat who has been missing from his home in Sixth Avenue since May 21. He’s neutered and microchipped, but has no collar as he is a mainly an indoor cat. Owners Andy and Miranda Gilroy say that they are devastated, and are offering
man who had spotted Harvey earlier on that day, to say he’d found him semi-conscious under an oil tanker in his back garden. “He was just absolutely exhausted, it had obviously been a traumatic time for Harvey – and for us. We were so pleased that we found him alive. It was a nightmare not knowing where he was, or even if he was alive. “Harvey is fine now – he’s just acting like nothing had happened. But we've installed a tracker on him, just in case he decides to disappear again in
a reward for Howie’s safe return. If you have any information, contact Andy on 07581 085551 or Miranda on 07931 453359. future.” Jackie, who has three dogs in total, added: “I can't thank the local community enough – they were amazing. “When we were out searching for Harvey, we had people coming up to us, asking if we'd seen him, not realising that we were his owners. “I think most of Filton must have been out looking for him. “Lost and Found Pets were just brilliant – we've brought them a dog trap as a thank you for their efforts.”

Council to embark on five-year plan to ensure survival of Filton pool A working group has been set up to explore the future options for Filton Sports and Leisure Centre after a consultant offered a view that change was needed to preserve the facility long term. Filton Town Council heard that a five-year-plan is being drawn up by leisure centre manager Scott Fessey. Last month’s finance meeting heard that an independent consultant had suggested that without change, the facility could become financially unviable, a point disputed by some councillors. Concerns have been raised after the town council precept was raised by 20% over the past three years.
In January the council was told by accountant Derek Kemp that expenditure was now ‘under control’ after the authority had problems last year which meant reserves were needed to balance the books. The council had seen a rise in staffing costs coupled with a reduction in income from the pool. The 10% rise (£20/ household) in precept followed rises of nearly 5% in each of the previous two years. Filton is the only town or parish which runs its own sports centre and pool and residents are effectively hit with a ‘double tax’ as their precept support the

Filton pool while some of their council tax goes to support other pools in South Glos. Some councillors believe that the pool is a highly valued asset which is worth paying for, with hundreds of children over the years having learned to swim there. Chair of Finance Ian Scott said that unless there was a major problem with a maintenance issue, the pool would remain viable. He said the precept had gone up to build reserves ‘to a sensible level’. He said: “Filton Town Council Tax is higher than other Councils because we run our own swimming pool. South
Gloucestershire Council will not pay for the swimming pool and the danger is that we will end up like Patchway with no swimming pool.

Returns to Bristol Hippodrome for the first time in 15 years
“For each budget Filton Town Council has to consider the cost of providing the public service of a swimming pool and the impact it will have on the Council Tax. “It is one of the most important decisions a Filton Town Councillor has to make. “Some councillors may believe this decision should not be made by councillors but by the public which brings into question why bother having a Filton Town Councillor if it is better for the public to make the decisions? It

will be interesting to see what the other Filton Town Councillors think? If I am in a minority I will be happy to stand down as a Filton Town Councillor.’ Cllr Alan Tink said residents should be asked whether they were happy to continue to subsidise the pool. Resident Dave Mikkelson said the council could not keep putting the precept up by 20% and said one problem was the high numbers of students in homes of multiple occupancy who were not paying council tax.
Residents have expressed their support for keeping the pool on Filtonvoice’s Facebook page Liz Cole I’m happy for my council tax to go towards the leisure centre, I swim once a week. I’m from West Yorkshire where leisure centres are 5-10 miles apart and I love that the Bristol/South Glos area has so many! It would be a shame to go back to having to drive to the pool. Liz Hawkins My 5yr old daughter has a genetic illness meaning she needs to do lots of physical activity and she loves the swimming lessons at Filton, and being local it means we can walk there. Kieran Hyde The leisure centre is a great asset to Filton but it comes at a cost to everyone. A pool is never going to make money but residents can’t keep bailing it out with increased taxes! ‘Double Taxation’ is the thing to think about I.e Filton people pay to keep South Glos leisure centres going and we also pay for our own in Filton! Kirstie Willshire I want the pool to remain open. Both my children learnt to swim there and the instructors are fantastic. I enjoy swimming there and doing aquafit and it is nice to leave the car at home and walk there. Michael Walker My 3 & 5 year olds are both learning to swim at Filton at the moment and we also use the pool as a family. The new soft play is great and we have held and attended parties there. Whilst I understand economics, I also believe you can’t put a price on a child having fun and learning. The pool and leisure centre is a valuable local commodity and should be protected. Kirstie Barnes All three of my girls had swimming lessons at Filton & the help and support we received was fantastic. They went from clinging onto the instructors to swimming 1,000 metres. It would be such a shame if other children & their parent/carers could not have the same as we did. Call Richard on 0777 555 0607 or Got a storyexperience or any other inquiry?

Filton Town Council roundup New vice-chair
This work, which included a visit to Julian Trust hostel in Bristol, had helped them understand the problem. Over the summer the youth council will be hosting a stall at the Filton Festival in July.
Cllr Darryl Collins has been reelected as chair of Filton Town Council. His vice-chair will be fellow Labour councillor Joanne Ward, who was elected earlier this year at a by-election following the death of Cllr Doug Daniels. Cllr Ward replaces Cllr Alan Tink (UKIP). Both Cllrs Collins and Ward were unopposed.
Community garden
Another successful year has been enjoyed by the Filton Community Garden team, including more recognition by the Royal Horticultural Society. Chair Dave Mikkelson told councillors that the garden was again given an ‘outstanding’ judgement and made special mention of the wildflower meadow which had been such a success. He said they had also created a rose garden dedicated to Cllr Doug Daniels who had been

such a supported of the garden and there was also work being done to support bee conservation efforts. Mr Mikkelson said the garden committee had worked with local schools, FACE, and twinning and had run several events. Remembrance was also marked including with knitted poppies displayed along the fence. He said the garden had been the fortunate recipient of generous donations but he paid
tribute to the volunteers who work so hard to keep the garden in such good condition. Council chairman Darryl Collins thanked the garden committee for all their efforts.
Youth Council
Filton Youth Council presented their annual report to the town council. They thanked councillors for their support and said that their 11 members had focussed on homelessness in the past year.
Friends of Conygre House will be donating more than £4,700 to local good causes after the historic building was sold to developers. Chair Keith Briffett said there was relief that the developers were planning to create flats but preserve the exterior of the building. He said it was possible three further homes could be built in the grounds in the future. Money raised at various events over the years by the group, which was set up to save the house, would go to Southern Brooks (£1,000); Men in Sheds, SHE7, Filton Chest and Heart, Filton Scouts and Filton Guides/ Rainbows (£700 each); and St Peter’s cafe (£117).

Creating a new community from the rubble of airfield
Vision for Filton Airfield site to include 3,600 homes, three schools and ‘linear parkway’ The new owners of Filton Airfield have set out their vision for the future of the site - and revealed they want to build 3,600 homes around a ‘linear parkway’. Filton Town Council heard Malaysian owners YTL have come up with the working name for the new ‘town’ as ‘Brabazon’, as an acknowledgement to the area’s aerospace heritage. Councillors heard the development, which is in addition to other homes being built around Patchway and Cribbs, could take up to 20 years to complete. The vision outlined would be subject to a planning application in the autumn. The new aero museum will be an integral part and the Brabazon hangars will be used for an as-yet unspecified purpose. The figure of 3,600 homes is around 1,000 greater than the previous outline permission of 2,600 and town councillors raised concerns about traffic and the impact Filton. Some of these homes will be apartments and there will
be a proportion of ‘affordable’ housing. Councillors, however, were encouraged by the vision for the site which will include an area for hi-tech employment as well as a public transportation hub. YTL, which bought Wessex WAter 24 years ago, said their masterplan had inherited much of the outline planning application put forward by pervious owners BAE but that they had ambitions to create a ‘town centre’ for South Glos. YTL’s UK boss Colin Skellett, who is also chief executive of Wessex Water, told Filton’s parish assembly that YTL, formed in 1955 in Malaysia, had a reputation for ‘creating communities’ and that they had never sold an asset in their 60year history. He said the town would be the biggest brownfield site in the South West with a footprint similar to the entire New Town of Edinburgh. The main feature will be the ‘linear parkway’, a strip of green Turn to Page 8

New vision for Filton Airfield site The original vision for the airfield submitted last year. YTL’s plans are based on this but with additional ideas
From Page 7 space running approximately on top of the current Filton Airfield runway. Mr Skellett said: “YTL like to create communities, not just build houses. “We are ambitious in terms of architecture and we wnat to build a town centre for South Gloucestershire. “We will be investing in transport and we will also be respecting the heritage of the site.” Mr Skellett said the original plan would have involved multiple builders but that for YTL’s plan, the company will build the whole project, including the parkland. He said the site would have
62 acres for hi-tech employment, two primary schools and one secondary school, recreation and also sports facilities and also retail. YTL has bought the historic Brabazon hangars but they are still considering how they could be used. Mr Skellett also said there were plans for an ‘aero campus’ as well as the employment possibilities. And the existing plan for the railway station would be moved to link up with the new aero museum as well as the Metrobus interchange. Councillors gave broad encouragement to the plans, but Cllr Keith Briffett said: “I totally oppose this - it is not sustainable.
“Has (YTL) considered the people who already live here.” Mr Skellett said that in terms of transport fears, £96million was being invested across the entire Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood. Cllr Anne Kenyon said: “This development will not help Filton in any way.” Other councillors said that the development was inevitible and that the aim must be to achieve the best solution. YTL said around £6m of remedial work was needed before any work could start. This time last year, Filton Airfield, effectively, no longer existed after South Glos Council voted to approve more than 2,500 homes, employment
opportunities, three schools and leisure facilities. The airfield has been a battleground of ideology, with protesters saying Filton’s heritage is being lost, traffic chaos will ensue, aerospace jobs will be less guaranteed and places like Filton may suffer as the new facilities are built. Others say the airfield ceased to be a meaningful facility for flight many years ago - certainly since the decision to develop Bristol Airpot at Lulsgate - and that the area needs homes, schools and employment. An aerospace museum will also be built. It is understood the “employment hub” would generate nearly 8,000 jobs. l Aero museum: Pages 12&13

Now that the deal has been negotiated with Government, the four authorities must decide whether or not they wish to accept it. These decisions will be taken by councillors in each area at council meetings this month. In South Gloucestershire, this meeting will take place on 29 June. In order to keep growing, to deliver services for residents and a future for the next generation through new infrastructure, skills and employment, we need more investment. Ceremony sees work on Concorde’s A “ground breaking” ceremony has been held to mark the start of work on Concorde 216’s new home. The event was held in and around the listed hangar that will become the new Aerospace Bristol visitor attraction next year. Guests and speakers included representatives from the many organisations involved in the long-awaited project and they watched the ground breaking as well as helping to form an outline of Concorde to show where the iconic aircraft will be located in the new building. “That we should find a fitting home for Concorde here at Filton is a statement and testimony to the achievements of everyone involved in the development, the production and the support of Concorde, and to the citizens of Bristol who are so proud of our aeroplane,“ said Iain Gray, chairman of the Bristol Aero Collection Trust. “Perhaps even more importantly, it is a symbol of what can be achieved and an inspiration for a new generation of engineers. The success of Concorde must be the inspiration for today’s youth to join our great industry and develop the new ideas of tomorrow.” Concorde 216 was the last Concorde to be built and the last to fly, and Captain Les Brodie, pilot on her final flight, was among those who addressed guests at the ceremony. Alzheimer’s Society staff, supporters, volunteers and people affected by dementia came together to mark Dementia Awareness Week at over 600 events around the country, including more than 60 in the south west. We asked people to confront the condition head on and I was touched by the notes people wrote, including this one: ‘Dear Dementia, I would rather not have had you, but I’m learning to live with you, with a lot of help from my friends at Alzheimer’s Society and my wife. It’s not the end of the world!” It is important that we continue talking about and confronting dementia so that we build on the awareness raised this week. Alzheimer’s Society is here for anyone affected by the condition and there are lots of ways we can help you. Call our National Dementia Helpline

Book review
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky
by a Filton Library teenage reader
An inspirational book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a must read for teens and young adults. The book is written as a series of letters and tells the story of Charlie who is negotiating the perils of high school. Charlie has lived a very difficult life for one so young. Shy and introspective, Charlie’s world is completely changed when he meets Sam and Patrick, older students who describe him as a ‘wallflower’. He stands back timidly watching others live life, afraid to participate but his new friends encourage him to live again and give him hope. The book gives deep insight into what life is like for someone experiencing anxiety and depression and how it is possible to recover. I enjoyed the story and I was rooting for Charlie throughout but would recommend having a box of tissues to hand when reading it. After reading the book I watched the film and felt it interpreted the story accurately but the book was better because it contained more depth.
The book and DVD are available to borrow or reserve from Filton Library. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one on a list of recommended books to help young people deal with a range of issues (e.g. selfesteem, bullying, stress, body image, anxiety). The Reading Well Shelf Help books can all be reserved free of charge. For more information visit www. southglos.gov.uk/leisure-andculture/libraries/recommendedbooklist/reading-well-shelflife/ or call into any South Gloucestershire Library.

School ‘at heart of the community’ impresses in first-ever inspection The results of Wallscourt Farm Academy’s first ever Ofsted inspection have been cause for celebration among staff, pupils and their families. The primary school, which opened in Cheswick Village in September 2013, received high praise from inspectors, who rated the school good with outstanding features after their visit in April. “This inclusive school is at the heart of the community,” their report said. “Pupils are thriving in this school.” The school is part of the Cabot Learning Federation (CLF) and currently has 170 pupils, which will expand to up to 420. The inspectors noted: “All staff have ‘bought into’ the Wallscourt Farm approach to teaching, learning and assessment. They strongly believe that every child has the potential to achieve and become an active, independent learner. This approach ... is resulting in inquisitive and motivated learners. Great consideration and care have gone into making this school a safe and exciting place to learn. “The school’s unique ‘enquiryled curriculum’ provides a wealth of learning opportunities for pupils to explore and discover. Nonetheless, leaders ensure a rigorous focus on the teaching and learning of key mathematical and literacy skills.” The school was assessed in various areas, with effectiveness of leadership and management; quality of teaching, learning and assessment; and outcomes for pupils all achieving a good rating. Personal development, behaviour and welfare and early years provision were both rated outstanding by the inspectors. Lead inspector Catherine Leahy added that the planned, whole-school approach supported all pupils to think deeply and learn about the world around them. Children took pride in their work and had very positive attitudes to learning. The most able were challenged to “deepen their learning” and showed perseverance and resilience, while children with special educational needs made outstanding progress and
Principal Susie Weaver celebrates with pupils at Wallscourt Farm Academy disadvantaged pupils made good progress. The inspectors highlighted the relentless drive and ambition of the school’s principal Susie Weaver to ensure that all children received a high quality education. This was said to be well supported by staff, parents, the CLF and the academy council. “Leaders and all staff are uncompromising in their absolute belief that every child can and will succeed at this school as a result of the highquality care and support each receives.” Miss Weaver said that everyone at Wallscourt Farm was thrilled with the report. “We are immensely proud of the report and feel it really reflects us, as a new and growing school, and where we are on our journey. We were so delighted that the children’s attitudes towards learning and life shone out and that the contribution of all involved has been recognised by the inspectors,” she said. Steve Taylor, chief executive of the Cabot Learning Federation, said: “In just 32 months, Susie and her team have taken an empty building and turned it into a thriving and happy school. This is a great outcome and reflects the hard work, commitment and passion that they, the pupils and their parents have for their school.”

Councillor takes fight to save library to South Glos
The case for saving Filton Library was heard by South Glos councillors as protesters gathered to voice opposition to possible cuts to the service. As reported in Filtonvoice, South Glos Council needs to make savings in the next financial year and has identified the library service as a possible target. Among the proposals are to create five ‘hubs’ but Filton would not be one of those. Other options could see opening hours reduced or volunteers being used to keep the library open. Filton residents responded in huge numbers to a public consultation and last month town councillor Joanne Ward, who has spearheaded the campaign
locally, told South Glos that closure or vastly reduced hours would be ‘devastating’. Cllr Ward said Filton was one of the best used, including for IT services, and that it was also one of the cheapest to run.

Labour has said the council should reverse its plans to reduce green bin collection charges while MP Jack Lopresti has said savings could be made elsewhere. The meeting in Kingswood took place just after the end of a 12-week consultation in which more than 3,000 people sent individual feedback forms and a number of groups staged protests and handed in petitions. Sue Poole, vice chair of Downend and Staple Hill Library User Group, handed in a petition of more than 1,000 names in support of Downend Library before the meeting. A petition with a similar number of names from Staple Hill was presented to councillors by William Barlow, who asked the council to look at making savings in other areas rather than libraries. Writer Ali Bacon spoke of her memories of using Downend Library as a young mum and said all communities needed libraries, especially relatively new and expanding ones away from extablished town centres. “Libraries underpin social, cultural and mental wellbeing,” she said.

No changes will be made until September 2017. South Glos says it needs to makes savings and has suggested libraries could be affected: 1. If opening hours were reduced by 19% (90 hours) in the realm of the target of £500k could be achieved. 2. Satellite libraries (inc Filton) could be staffed and operated by the Council for two days (18 hours) per week. Local groups and volunteers could fund additional hours. 3. All libraries could be closed except identified main libraries. These are currently proposed as Kingswood, Yate, Patchway, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke. A South Glos spokesman said: “Significant savings are needed in the budgets for libraries and the amount the council spends on its buildings. “The council is also looking to introduce a Community Hub model, where appropriate, to provide multiple services from single locations. “The measures are part of the updated Council Savings Plan (CSP), approved as part of the 2016/17 council budget in February, which set out savings of an additional £22million from annual spending by 2019/20.” Responses to the consultation will be analysed before a new paper is presented to councillors in September so they can decide on the next phase of the library review.

Looking after your pet rabbit Rabbits are popular pets. Did you know that there are around 1.6 million kept as pets throughout the UK? It is alarming to consider therefore, that only one in every 12 owners ensures their pet is properly vaccinated against potentially fatal diseases like myxomatosis and VHD. Any rabbit, whatever their lifestyle or breed, is at risk of contracting myxomatosis, a very nasty disease, and the majority of affected rabbits will die – will your pet rabbit be one of them? Myxomatosis is particularly common during the summer, although rabbits can contract the disease at any time of year. It is spread typically by blood-sucking insects like fleas and biting flies. The disease attacks domestic and wild
with Michael Parry rabbits alike. In addition to the characteristic bulging of the eye lids, key symptoms include localised swellings around the head, face, ears, lips, anus and genitalia. Severe swelling can lead to blindness and distortion of the face, often resulting in difficulty with drinking and feeding. With no specific treatment, it is crucial that you put controls in place to manage it; namely controlling parasites and ensuring vaccination. Frequent pet checks for signs of fleas, along with regular use of insecticidal treatment, helps greatly. In terms of vaccination, it is recommended that a single dose of myxomatosis vaccine be given to all healthy, nonpregnant rabbits over the age of six weeks. Boosters are recommended once year. Consultation on post office move comes to an end by Rebecca Day A consultation has just ended on the relocation of Filton Avenue Post Office, which will see a “significant increase” in its opening hours. Post Office has proposed moving the branch to the nearby Spar convenience store, pictured, where it would open for an extra 57 hours and 30 minutes a week – more than double its current opening hours – including all day Sunday and Saturday afternoon. Services would be delivered from two open-plan counters integrated into the retail counter of the convenience store, and will include manual banking, Transcash, and Royal Mail and Parcelforce Worldwide international parcel delivery. Payments by cheque would still be accepted. The move – with the current Postmaster’s agreement – is part of a major programme that will see the modernisation of up to 8,000 post office branches across the country.
Will Russell, regional manager of Post Office, said: “We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents. “We are confident that this vibrant new-style post office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs. This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and will secure services for the future.” The six-week public consultation ended on May 20. A decision over the branch will be reached within two months.
The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk, Bristol Old Vic Theatre review by Filtonvoice competition winner Tony Blake How do you portray the life and love of an impressionist painter and his beautiful wife as they live through the horrors and drama of the first half of the 20th century? Well, the answer was found at the Old Vic earlier this month as the incomparable Marc Antolin and Audrey Bresson bring Marc and Bella Chagall back to life with Daniel Jamieson’s wonderful script about their
lives. They are ably aided by musicians Ian Ross and James Gow who recreate every musical genre, from smoky jazz clubs and a Russian wedding to American pop music of the 1940s. These four people fill the stage for two hours; a tour de force of drama, song and dance to bring these lovers to life with tenderness, excitement and pathos as they live through the anti-Jewish pogroms, World
War One, Bolshevik revolution and the Second World War’s extermination of Jews. While Sophia Clist’s stage set might start off looking like a collapsed tent, it takes you everywhere from birch forest to New York apartments like a magic carpet. All this lets you slip into Marc and Bella’s world; it was magnificent.

Father and daughter set to paddle and pedal in aid of Poppy Appeal by Rebecca Day A father and daughter are teaming up for a special 85-mile challenge to raise money for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Over seven days, Jason Philips will be kayaking the length of the Kennet and Avon canal, while his daughter Georgia cycles alongside him on the towpath, carrying equipment and providing updates through social media. The pair will begin their journey on July 31 in Reading, and the route will cover 96 locks, two aqueducts and a long tunnel. Jason, who is a member of the Stoke Gifford branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “All the money raised from my canal kayak is for the Poppy Appeal fund to provide welfare support to the extended Armed Forces family.
Jason Philips is kayaking the length of the Kennet and Avon canal “The trip will take seven days, six nights of which we will be camping at or near public houses along the way.
“We should get some great photos as we travel through Wiltshire countryside and plan to finish at 1pm on August 6 at The
Cottage in Bristol City Docks. “I would like to thank Clare from the North Avon Canoe Club for their help and support in preparation for the event.” The pair have so far raised over £500, but they are calling on local Filton folk to help them reach their £5,000 target. Youngsters warming up for twinning trip A group of youth workers and young people will be running the equivalent of the height of Mount Everest to raise funds for a trip to Germany this summer. There will be 11 people in total from local youth charity FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) each running 8,848m – approximately five and a half miles – at Elm Park’s speedway track on June 11 at 9.30am. They are hoping to raise £3,500, which will enable some of the charity’s young people to join the Filton Twinning Association on a trip to Witzenhausen in Germany at the beginning of July. Debbie Teml, manager of FACE, is taking part in the run. She said: “Eleven of our FACE youth group wish to join the Filton Twinning Association trip to
Witzenhausen in Germany this year, but it’s very expensive, meaning that some of our young people would be unable to go without some external fundraising help. “In order to raise funds we are doing a sponsored Mount Everest Run. Between us we’re going to be running 97,328m! “In order to encourage you to reach into your pockets, let us remind you that we are not athletes, not runners, not all fit people in any way at all, and yet we are joining together as young people and youth workers to raise funds for the trip to take place.” Debbie added: “We would love people to sponsor us, or they can come and see us and put some money in our bucket on the day if they would like.” To sponsor those taking part in the Mount Everest Run, visit crowdfunding.justgiving. com/face-mounteverest-run

Fountain fund to Filton community charity FACE has had a busy month, with plenty of activities ahead, too. Rebecca Day finds out about a £1,000 gift from shoppers, plans to ‘run Mount Everest’ and how a £40,000 grant secured the future of the group’s base Filton’s youth and community charity FACE was one of the lucky recipients of money collected from the fountain at The Mall in Cribbs Causeway. Eleven projects and charities were invited along to the Fountain Fund tea party at the shopping centre to receive their grants – totalling over £10,000 – to carry out vital work to support local disadvantaged people. Quartet Community Foundation, which administers The Mall Fountain Fund, along with representatives from The Mall, handed out the cheques. FACE, which is based at Elm Park, received £1,000 which will contribute towards its summer activity programme for children and families in Filton.
Debbie Teml, FACE manager, received the grant on behalf of the charity. She said: “It’s great to be able to provide fun and affordable activities for children and young people during the summer holidays and this grant will enable us to run a coach trip to Drayton Manor Park.” Maria Crayton, head of marketing at The Mall, said: “We are delighted to provide funds to support such valuable grassroots organisations in our community.” Sue Turney, CEO of the Quartet Community Foundation, said: “It was a pleasure to meet project and community staff today to celebrate the start of their projects. “At Quartet we know the real challenges that local people face

Youth centre’s future is watertight after £40,000 grant fixes roof The future of a local youth centre has been secured, thanks to a £40,000 grant to replace its troublesome leaky roof. St Andrew’s Methodist Church, where the centre is based and leased by local charity FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement), received the money from Biffa Award – a multi-millionpound national fund that helps transform communities through providing grants. According to users of the centre, the roof had been deteriorating and leaking for over 10 years, with volunteers at the church constantly trying to make repairs.
Debbie Teml, manager of FACE, says that the new flat roof – which includes skylights – has secured the charity’s base for their work with Filton’s children and young people, as well as vulnerable, disabled and elderly people. Glazing was also installed above the foyer at the centre. Debbie said: “It’s great to be watertight. We’ve needed a new roof on our building for such a long time and it’s lovely to finally put away the buckets and not worry about water dripping through the ceiling. “The new roof is fantastic and will enable us to develop and strengthen our work in the local
community for the coming years without worrying about the roof over our heads.” Sally Kneebone, a volunteer at Silver Surfers – one of the groups that FACE runs – said: “The Silver Surfers love coming along every week and many of them see it as a great social place as well as getting help with technology and keeping their minds and hands active. “Without it many would become more socially isolated and life would not be so good. The foyer to the building is so much brighter with the new glass above it; it’s almost like a new room. Our elderly people don’t have to worry about tripping over
buckets anymore with the new roof and it gives the building a new lease of life.” Gillian French, head of grants at Biffa Award, said: “We’re really pleased to be able to use the Landfill Communities Fund to help improve community spaces. I’m sure users of the centre will be glad to be safe from the rain.” The church will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of its youth centre building and its youth work next year, with a community celebration event planned for April 8, 2017. he annual Shield Road School Fete has become one of the “go to” events in the Filton area in recent years and the Friends of Shield Road (FOS-R) are putting the final touches to this year’s event to be
held on Saturday, July 2, from noon to 4pm. All the usual attractions will be making an appearance, including bouncy castles, arena displays and a range of traditional games such as Ball in

the Bog, Catch the Rat and beat the Goalie. In addition there will be an eclectic range of stalls and traders as well as loads of food and refreshments. We will even have our very own candy floss machine! By popular demand the “Gunge Tank” will be reappearing, leaving staff and governors “shivering in their shoes” as to who will be the chosen one to have 50 litres of BBC-patent gunge dumped on them. You can even vote for your “favourite”. Louise Davies, chair of FOS-R, said: “Shield Road has established itself as a quality setup with great academic results and significant investment in and expansion of the fabric of the school by the LEA. We at FOS-R work hard to stage an event that has something for everyone, raises funds for the children but most of all is fun! In recent years
for our expanding library, buy outside toys for lunchtimes and no one who visits the school can miss our fantastic climbing wall. “I would like to thank our range of sponsors and Ocean estate agents for their ongoing help with advertising with this and our other events. They are very supportive. “In addition this will be the last year for some of our long-standing FOS-R members who, with their hard work and dedication to the school, have brought the friends group to where it is now. Us newer parents have big shoes to fill. “We hope to see you all on July 2.” If you are looking for a school for your children or are interested in helping with FOS-R, email enquiries@shieldroad.org. uk or pop into the school and ask for details.

Consultation has begun on a new CCG plan to reduce the number of falls suffered by older people in South Gloucestershire. There are about 3,800 ambulance call-outs per year to falls which result in 900 hospital admissions and 260 broken hips, putting a strain on the health and wellbeing of older residents, and the local healthcare system. To help reduce the likelihood of a fall, the area’s Clinical Commissioning Group, which delivers NHS services, plans to employ a community team who will work with the specialist Falls Physiotherapist and provide preventative and rehabilitation services. The CCG’s Clinical Lead for Urgent Care, Dr Ann Sephton, said: “The Community Falls Service will be part of the suite of services we provide to rehabilitate people and help them stay in their homes rather than needing hospital treatment or residential care. “Half of our residents over
the age of 80 will have a fall during the year. This can mean a loss of confidence, mobility and independence as well as injury and possibly undergoing surgery, facing all the risks an operation poses. During this consultation we want to hear views about our plan and ideas about how we can make the Community Falls Service as effective as possible.” The team will also be able to perform other health checks on their patients, such as dementia screening and is expected to start work later this year. Health care for the elderly at home and in the community is an important element of the NHS services which the CCG commissions through its partner Sirona care & health. Filton residents can find out more a within the Get Involved pages of the CCG website www. southgloucestershireccg.nhs.uk. The closing day for responses to the Dementia Advisors and Community Falls Team consultations is July 7.

Workshop puts mental health in the spotlight by Rebecca Day A workshop promoting positive mental health is coming to Filton this month. It is being co-ordinated by Southern Brooks Community Partnership, and run by South Gloucestershire Council. Those attending the event can expect to learn what is meant by “mental health”, ways to build resilience and wellbeing into work roles and personal life, how to access local services, and where to turn in times of crisis. The workshop, which is taking place at the Filton Pavilion in Elm Park, is aimed at local residents, as well as volunteers and professionals who come into contact with the public. Katie Donovan-Adekanmbi,
business and sustainable communities manager at Southern Brooks, said: “Mental health is a big issue at the moment, and it’s going to be a priority for local authorities over the coming year. “The workshop will provide an opportunity to learn more about mental health, and ways to take care of your own mental wellbeing.” The session, which runs from 1-3pm on June 21, will be led by Sarah Roberts, the specialist health improvement officer in mental health at South Gloucestershire Council. To book a place, contact Katie on 01454 868 583 or office@ southernbrooks.org.uk. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided upon arrival.

South Glos Show brewing up a storm VISITORS to the South Gloucestershire Show this summer will have the chance to decide which is the area’s best beer. The annual event, which runs on 6 and 7 August at a site in Henfield, is holding its first beer competition. Five breweries that are based in South Gloucestershire are going head to head to see which brew comes out on top. Great Western Brewery, Cotswolds Spring Brewery, Bath Ales, Severn Vale and Wickwar Brewery have all entered a pale ale and a bitter into the competition, which was launched by the Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall. The beers will be available at the show as well as at local pubs. Ballot forms will be available to pick up at pubs and the ballot box will be in the Beer Festival area at the Show. South Glos Show supports new charity THIS year’s South Glos Show is to help raise funds for the Meningitis Now charity. The Gloucestershire based charity replaces the Great Western Air Ambulance as the nominated charity for the event, which last year attracted over 24,000 visitors. The Show returns to the Westerleigh Showground over the weekend of 6 and 7 August. Meningitis Now, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, will have an awareness stand at the show and interactive attractions for the public to donate to the charity. Liz Brown, the chief executive of Meningitis Now, said: “Events like this, as well as being wonderful fundraising opportunities, are also valuable ways to spread awareness about the disease and make sure people know the signs and symptoms and how to look out for themselves and their loved ones.” The show’s headline act this year, The Knights of the Damned, will be staging a joust in the main arena, and 2016 sees the return of motorbike stunt man, Flyin’ Ryan. Other attractions include a music festival, motor show, country fair and a BMX stunt arena.

Quick learners spend day with the Bloodhound
Pupils at Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy spent an afternoon with the British team which is attempting to break the world land speed record. The Bloodhound Super-Sonic Car aims to raise the current mark of 763mph (1,228km/h) to over 800mph in the South African desert. At 13m in length and weighing more than 7 tonnes, Bloodhound features a rocket system which will fire in tandem with a Eurofighter jet engine to push the vehicle through the sound barrier. The ultimate goal is to go above 1,000mph (1,610km/h). The science behind Bloodhound is now being used in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities in schools, and Year 10
pupils at BTE Academy paid a recent visit to the car’s home in Avonmouth. The programme has installed a BBC Micro:Bit codable computer, which enables students to investigate the behaviour of mini rocket cars. Working with British Army engineering instructors, the group used the technology to test the concept that acceleration is the rate of change in velocity over a period of time. Jon Furber, the member of staff supporting the students, said: “The Bloodhound Project is a global engineering adventure, using a 1,000mph world land speed record attempt to inspire the next generation to get involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

Alumni of Orchard School Bristol offering support to current students come from a range of careers and vocations from business management and engineering to TV production and hospitality. They have helped current students with online mentoring, speed networking, mock interviews and acting as role models in assemblies. The school is keen to contact more former students including those in established careers and vocations and recent school leavers, whether they live nearby or have moved away. Orchard School is one of 400 state schools and colleges across Britain registered with the national education charity Future First to set up ‘old school tie networks’ enabling them to harness the talents of exstudents to motivate the current generation. Future First’s vision is that every state school or college should be supported by a thriving, engaged alumni community that helps it to do more for its students. More than 150,000 former students across Britain have already signed up to stay connected with their old school and to motivate young people as career and education role models, mentors or e-mentors, work experience providers, governors, donors or fundraisers. Dr Helen Holman, headteacher at Orchard School, has been delighted by the excellent response from former students signing up to Future First. She said: “For us as a school it is wonderful to keep in touch with and hear the success stories of so many of our students, but the impact of this work is much deeper than that. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the alumni in willingly giving their time to support our current students – through mentoring, sharing stories and being excellent and inspirational role models.” Alex Shapland-Howes, managing director of Future
Orchard School seeks former students to inspire today’s generation like these current Year 9 students.
First, said: “More than 39 per cent of state school students don’t know anyone in a job they’d like to do,” “If they see that someone who went to the same school, grew up in the same community, has achieved a fulfilling and satisfying job, it helps them see it’s possible for them too. It’s really important for all students to be motivated to succeed in the working world and hearing first hand from relatable people in interesting jobs can make a huge difference.” Hayley Galpin, Careers Coordinator at Orchard, is waiting to hear from former students on h.galpin@ orchardschoolbristol.co.uk. Former students can also sign up to Future First’s alumni scheme by clicking on the “Former Students” link on the website www.futurefirst.org.uk. Teachers wishing to sign up another school to Future First should click the “Schools and Colleges staff” link. For further information, visit www. futurefirst.org.uk or call one of the team on 0207 239 8933.

Why not come along on and exercise your lungs and challenge your grey cells with our friendly group of people who are The Filtones. We are actively seeking to recruit altos, tenors (gents or ladies) and basses to join our happy band. We sing four part harmony but ability to read music, although useful, is not essential as we supply CDs and MP3 files as teaching aids. We give afternoon concerts to elderly people’s clubs and societies around Bristol and two evening concerts in June and December from which we donate much of our profit to charities. We are a very caring and sociable group of people who sing together with the aim of giving as good a performance as we can, but mainly to enjoy ourselves.
