Much of Filton could become a 20mph zone under proposals by South Glos Council aimed at encouraging cycling.

Residents are now being encouraged to respond to a consultation, which runs until July 3, If adopted, the 20 mph scheme would affect the following roads; Eighth Avenue, Kipling Road, Mortimer Road, Ninth Avenue, Nutfield Grove and Wallscourt Road South; Brabazon Road, Mackie Avenue, Mackie Grove, Mackie Road, Roycroft Road, Shellard Road,

Station Road, Stanley Avenue and Wallscourt Road; Bronksea Road, Braemar Avenue, Braemar Crescent, Charborough Road, Clyde Grove, Dunkeld Avenue, Elgin Avenue, Lomond Road and Rannoch Road; and Elm Park.

Now we need Filton people to tell us what they think

By Filton Community Garden chaiman Dave Mikkelson Two years ago a group of Filton residents got together with a vision to create a Community Garden where residents of Filton and the wider community could relax, enjoy and congregate.

I do not think any of the group could have imagined what an impact the garden has made and from a simple plan which incorporated seating and some flower beds what has developed. The garden now has a Fernery, Rockery, Wildflower Bank, Picnic tables, a Bug House, Edible Bed and with the involvement of the Schools, Colleges, Youth Club and Filton Twinning individual beds reflecting the creative talents of our community.

The garden was recognised by the RHS with an award of outstanding. The assessor also said that it was the best example of a garden of its type that he had seen.

Not being a group to rest on its laurels, we are now looking at the feasibility of erecting a bandstand in the garden. We are putting together a project plan in which we want to include the thoughts of the residents of Filton and the various organisations and groups in our community.

The term bandstand is perhaps a loose term. Whilst we would hope that it is used for concerts, it would also be ideal for parties, outdoor plays, teaching venue, exhibitions, corporate functions and just relaxing, a focal point for the community of Filton.

Whilst there is no certainty that this project will be successful, the Gardening Committee will work tirelessly to try to make it happen.

What we would like is for residents and groups to send us their views, positive and negative on what the erection of a bandstand in the Community Garden would mean to residents of Filton and the wider community which we can incorporate in the project plan for submission to funders.

Community Garden A bandstand could become a feature of Filton Community Garden - and now the garden committee want local people to give their opinion.

Chairman Dave Mikkelson told the town council that the committee had already secured an agreement for the work to be done for labour costs only and now they will be looking into raising the £50,000 costs.

He said the prestigious Filton Concert Brass was ‘excited’ by the prospect of bringing music to many in the Filton area.

Mr Mikkelson, who last month showed newly re-elected MP Jack Lopresti round the garden said plans were also under way to investigate a lift system which would help residents in the Springfield housing complex - which backs onto the garden - to have access even if mobility was limited.

Town councillors said they supported the plans of the committee.

Mr Mikkelson said there would now be a period of inviting opinions from members of the public to gauge levels of support.

Plans for bandstand as garden grows and grows

It put Filton on the map - and now, finally, it is to be wiped off the map.

Filton Airfield, effectively, will no longer exist after South Glos Council voted this month to approve more than 2,500 homes, employment opportunities, three schools and leisure facilities.

The airfield has been a battleground of ideology, with protesters saying Filton’s heritage is being lost, traffic chaos will ensue, aerospace jobs will be less guaranteed and places like Filton may suffer as the new facilities are built.

Others say the airfield ceased to be a meaningful facility for flight many years ago - certainly since the decision to develop Bristol Airpot at Lulsgate - and that the area needs homes, schools and employment. An aerospace museum will also be built. It is understood the “employment hub” would generate nearly 8,000 jobs.

By Darryl Collins Chair, Filton Town Council When the original South Glos Council/BAe Filton Airfield proposals were bullied through, Filton residents were promised around 50 hectares of high end employment land as an Aerospace Park delivering around 9,000 jobs, a home for Concorde that included an Aero Heritage Museum and that the Air Ambulance would always have a home on the Filton Airfield?

Today after 12 years Concorde still sits out in all weather and not so much as a spade has hit the ground toward the construction of the promised museum. This proposed development agreed by South Glos Council is scheduled to deliver only 24 hectares of the promised 50 hectares of high end Aerospace and Emerging Technologies employment land.

And the Helicopter Port is to be moved to Almondsbury.

A gallant battle to ‘Save Filton Airfield’ was lost mostly because South Glos Council had already

agreed to the closure and development of the airfield long before we residents were given any clue. To be fair, BAe clearly stated there was no future for the Airfield if residents rejected a Regional Airport back in 1995.

On paper this final BAe proposal, unfortunately including the loss of a large number of ‘affordable homes’ agreed by South Glos, promises to deliver a host of infrastructure ... Schools, Sports Hall and Playing Fields, GP Centre, Bowling Greens and a Pavilion, Skate Park, Community Centre and Park Land and so much more. I can see many of these shiny new facilities having a negative effect on a number of the services provided by Filton Town Council who are struggling to provide the many services and amenities Filton residents need and deserve.

I believe we need to be very vigilant in ensuring the promised infrastructure is delivered.

Against our wishes the residents of Filton and the surrounding areas have invested their Airfield and arguably the future of our proud Aerospace Heritage in this development and it’s right and proper we should hold out for the very best of returns.

The project will now be able to be started, with a possible 1020 year timeframe before all is complete. There will be calls now to accelerate public transport projects such as MetroWest rail and the Henbury Loop to go some way to easing the effect of the extra traffic.

Filton councillor Roger Hutchinson, who voted for the application, said: “Clearly there are major concerns about traffic generation and congestion and the measures planned to try to deal with that.

“There are other issues of concern for people in Filton that have been expressed but I think that this is the main one.

“On the other hand, there are benefits such as jobs, many of which will be aerospace related, the Concorde museum and new housing. This is a development that is expected to take 10 to 20 years to complete and it is to be hoped that the concerns can be overcome by the proper

investment by Government and Local authorities to overcome the perceived problems, including improved public transport delivered at an early date.”

Local MP Jack Lopresti said: “As sad as I was to see the operational demise of the airfield, I think the plan for Filton airfield development is an amazing opportunity which will provide our area with several thousand new jobs, much needed housing and very welcome infrastructure investment into our local transport system.”

The development on the BAEowned site is part of a wider plan to build nearly 6,000 homes on and around the airfield.

In a separate development, Rolls-Royce has told members of Filton Town Council of the plans to develop the East works, on the other side of the A38, to include a hotel offices, a car showroom and other uses.

Members of the town council and public said they were very concerned about the traffic impact of the plans.

Choir in appeal for members The Filtones are a non auditioning, four part harmony, mixed choir who rehearse every Wednesday afternoon from 1.45 p.m to 3.45 p.m. at Eden Grove Methodist Church, Horfield, and enjoy the social side of singing together.

Charity’s learners organise fun day for community Filton charity FACE will be putting on a fun-filled family event to commemorate Armed Forces Day, while raising funds to support its own work within the community and the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

The celebration day has been organised by adults at the FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) community centre in Elm Park, who have learning difficulties or disabilities.

Their event-planning is part of an accredited course that FACE is running to help develop the learners’ employability skills.

On the day, there will be something for all the family, including arts and crafts, a bouncy castle, games, raffle and tombola, plus various stalls

selling craft items made by FACE’s learners. Light snacks and refreshments will also be available throughout the day.

Entry is 50p per person, with under-eights and over-65s free.

Organisers will gratefully receive any donations to the tombola table before the event, as well as any monetary donations.

The event will be held on Saturday, June 27, 11am-3pm, at St Andrew’s Methodist Youth Centre in Elm Park.

Protecting your interests Lasting Power of Attorney Unfortunately situations may arise that result in you, or a loved one, becoming unable to make informed decisions about financial matters, medical decisions or your future care. This may happen suddenly, as a result of an accident, or more slowly due to the onset of a condition such as Alzheimer’s.

As well as being extremely distressing this can also raise a number of legal issues about who will take responsibility for making important decisions regarding finances or your care in the future.

There are things you can do, with the help of your solicitor; to protect your interests, and those of your family, should the worst happen.

The first thing to consider is making a lasting power of attorney (LPA).

This allows you to appoint someone, usually a family member, to make decisions on your behalf. You can make an LPA for finances and one for welfare. Your attorney can then manage your financial affairs as well as make decisions about your care and well being (providing you also have a welfare LPA) if you later go on to lose mental capacity.

If your loved one has already lost mental capacity it is not possible to appoint an attorney, but the Court of Protection safeguards the interests of all those unable to make these kind of decisions for themselves.

The Court of Protection can appoint a deputy to manage a person’s property and affairs.

Taking on the role of a Deputy can be extremely confusing and stressful and you may find yourself faced with a whole host of issues of which you have no experience – from managing property and investments to making difficult decisions about care packages and medical support.

Again, your solicitor will be able to provide support and guidance.

In some cases a solicitor is able to take on the role of Deputy on behalf of a client. This may happen if the family feel unable to manage the affairs themselves because the financial situation or care needs are particularly complicated, or if an individual has no one else able to take on this role.

Dealing with the issues around lasting power of attorney and deputyship can be extremely complicated, as well as personally difficult for all those involved, which is why getting the right advice and guidance is so important.

One story has inspired us and we feel that it’s only right that we share it with you. Sarah* was a bright, youthful teen who had a quite easy-going life besides her alcoholic mother.

At the age of 16 she couldn’t tolerate the unsafe environment that was affecting her life.

She moved in with her aunt, but when she lost her job her aunt said she had to leave as she couldn’t afford to keep her anymore. She began sofa-surfing with friends then she ran out of places to go, she became homeless and began living on the streets.

Depressed. Lonely. Unsafe.

After some time on the streets she went and took shelter in a hostel for homeless people.

She says that they had to share a kitchen between 12 people but had individual beds. After starting to get on her feet she suffered from depression and started drug abusing and ended up on the streets again.

After this really low point in her life she found light at the end of the tunnel, 1625 Independent People. They were so supportive and helped Sarah out of the dark time in her life. They provided a social support group where

Following on from our visit to The Julian Trust, we had a workshop with 1625 Independent People, who talked us through their charity and how they help people.

They are a charity which was formed in 1983 supporting 16-25-year-olds with housing, budgeting and living more independently. They run supported housing as well as having floating support workers who help young people rebuild their lives after they are homeless. They have mentoring schemes and mediation as well.

We were asked to work out how much we thought we would need to spend each week to survive if living on our own; this included things like rent, food, phone bills, electricity, etc.

We were then told to compare our weekly budget to the Job

Seekers Allowance weekly budget for a 16-year-old, which is £53 per week. This told us that a teenager living on JSA couldn’t afford to pay rent, buy food, and catch the bus to have a social life and that we would struggle, given that we spent £200+ on our weekly budgets! It was a big shock to us that the Government expects teenagers to be more independent but without a good job we would not be able to afford to live on our own.

One of the people who came from 1625 Independent People was called Nae, and she was part of their peer mentoring scheme, going around to schools and youth groups like us leading workshops.

During this project about homelessness we learned that homelessness can be caused by many reasons; such as poverty, debt, unemployment,

help in finding a solution she could talk about her hard experiences, helped her find accommodation and she finally found a release for all of the bad feelings that had piled up over the years. She got clean of drugs and now she’s 25 and has dedicated her time to helping people in similar situations as her, as a volunteer.

You would never be able to tell she has gone through all this hardship as she is a very bubbly person. We all found it hard listening to her story but happy that she had managed to turn her life around. *Name changed relationship breakdown, substance abuse, poor mental or physical health or lack of affordable housing. Although there are many contributing factors for men, the main causes are relationship breakdown, substance misuse, and leaving an institution (prison, care, hospital etc.). For women, the main causes are physical or mental health problems and escaping a violent relationship.

We were surprised to learn that the average life expectancy of someone who is street homeless is only 47 for a man and only 43 for a woman.

Street homelessness isn’t the only kind of homelessness either, there is also squatting, sofa-surfing, and temporary accommodation (living in a B&B or hostel). The law defines someone as being homeless if they do not have a legal right to occupy accommodation, or if their accommodation is unsuitable to live in.

We learned that local councils have a legal duty to

provide advice and assistance to people who are legally defined as homeless or threatened with homelessness. However, not everyone who falls within the legal definition necessarily qualifies for temporary accommodation.

If you find that you are, or someone you know is, facing homelessness, there are places you can go for help. There are also places you can go to for help with debt problems or financial difficulties to prevent you becoming homeless. Youngsters outline work to councillors A group of seven members of the youth council addressed the town council at the annual assembly last month.

The youngsters - representing the 11-strong youth council - outlined to councillors the activities they had been involved in during the past 12 months.

These included a summer fun day, workshops at local schools on anti-bullying and a Christmas disco.

They also spoke about their main project this year, the homelessness work which readers can find out about in the article on these pages.

They said they now needed to recruit new members for their forthcoming work.

The group was accompanied by Debbie Teml of FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) organisation.

Councillors expressed praise for the work of the youth council.

First team celebrating a milestone promotion to league’s top division Filton Athletic will be starting next season in the Bristol Suburban League’s top division for what is believed to be the first time in two decades.

The team have been promoted to the league’s Premier Division 1 despite having only spent one season in Premier Division 2, in which they finished second.

Patricia Burge, secretary of the football club, which was founded in 1956, believes that this is the first time in 20 years that Filton Athletic has been in Premier 1.

Filton’s Reserves finished in fourth position in Division 4.

Patricia said: “Nathan Burge has been the First Team’s manager for a few years now, when they were in Division 2, so as you can see a lot of hard work from him and all the players have gone into this wonderful

Hospital hosts art in celebration of motherhood An exhibition celebrating motherhood has opened in the Brunel building at Southmead Hospital Bristol.

Mother in the Mother features photographs, sculptures, paper dolls and casts of pregnancy bumps created during a project that responded to the stories of 200 local mums.

The project explores maternal lineage and features photographs of families where there are four or more generations of women.

The youngest person featured in the exhibition is three months and the eldest is 88.

The idea for the project came to arts practitioner Pippa Robinson after she gave birth to her first daughter at Southmead Hospital - and now the exhibition

is on display a short walk away from the maternity unit.

More than 6,000 babies are born at North Bristol NHS Trust every year at Southmead Hospital’s Central Delivery Suite and Mendip Birth Centre, Cossham Birth Centre and in the community.

Mother in the Mother is the latest exhibition to go on display in the atrium space opposite the Sanctuary.

Misty Tunks, of Easton, took part in the project, with casts made of her changing body throughout the pregnancy featuring in the exhibition.

“I kept a bit of a diary to record how I was feeling at the time when Pippa cast the bumps and the little notes are

“This is a really great space for the exhibition as it is really light and really bright and great to have so many people passing by to look at it.

“Motherhood is something that everyone can connect with.”

of the other midwives to come and have a look because it is quite thought-provoking.”

Pippa Robinson said: “It has been wonderful to work with so many amazing women over the course of this project and to hear stories about the reality, rather than the ideal, of motherhood.”

Mother in the Mother will be on display in the Sanctuary Gallery until August.

Filton chosen as location for new school aimed at autistic children

Proposals for a new free school in Filton have been submitted to the Department for Education.

The South Gloucestershire and Stroud Multi Academy Trust (SGSAT), sponsor South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS College), has submitted an application for a new school, The SGS School, for 80 boys and girls with autism aged between 4 and 19 to open in 2017.

This application represents many months of dedication and hard work. To complete the lengthy application form, SGSAT had to write detailed education plans and budgets; explain why the school is needed by this community and demonstrate that it has local support. More than 80 parents signed-up to say that they will support this school

with both South Gloucestershire Council and Bristol City Council lending their support too. The Trust has liaised very closely with South Gloucestershire Parents and Carers Forum to understand the views of parents as well as helping to appreciate how to best meet the needs of children with autism.

If the application is approved, the next stage will be a rigorous interview with the Department for Education after which they will hear if the school has been given the green light.

Kevin Hamblin, Chief Executive Officer of SGSAT and Principal of SGS College said: “The Trust, the College and I are delighted with the immense support we have received from South Gloucestershire Council, special schools and resource

Where have all the foxes in Filton gone?

I recently saw a solitary badger crossing Kenmore Crescent and it was a delight to see a rare glimpse of the wildlife living in our largely sterilised urban environment.

Just the other night I was uncommonly happy to see a solitary hedgehog scurry across Gaynor Road.

Why uncommonly happy?

Well because of course their population numbers have been decimated and what was once a common and welcome nighttime sight has become very scarce indeed.

This being the first live and well hedgehog I’ve seen in this area for about 3 or 4 years at least, it seemed to scurry with such haste it was as if it knew its survival was a matter of some urgency!

As with the disappearance of the house sparrows, we don’t always realise the harm we’ve done because we need a jolt to remind us of what we’ve stopped noticing.

By increasing security/ privacy and striving for the excessively neat and tidy for example, we make our gardens more and more impermeable and inhospitable to this urban wildlife and I think we need to address that for the generations now growing up more disconnected from wildlife and with the perception that a humble hedgehog for example surely always was a rare sight…. wasn’t it?!

Travellers’ camp prompted memories The prompt action by Town Clerk Lesley Reuben’s intervention to stop the alleged illegal camping on the Elm Park recreation ground at Filton is to be commended.

Whilst one sometimes sympathises with those attempting to set up home – albeit a camping van – such an intrusion can be described as an invasion into a publicly-owned property.

A similar situation came about several years ago – yet on a much larger scale. The late Alderman Eric Smith, MBE – the then Chair of the Town Council and myself – both members of Northavon District Council – were required to “Investigate”

a large gathering of “illegal” campers gathered on the site, now popularly transformed to the Abbeywood Retail Park.

Adjacent to a massive coalbunker it bestraggled a public footpath.

They were working on the extension to the M5 motorway.

Some were displaying a contractor’s logo on the side of their cars.

It was a distinctly uncomfortable situation and I well recall Eric’s immortal words ... “Come on Doug! ... let’s get out of here!”

Yet again it was completely illegal. Amidst the dusty surroundings the travellers were determined to stay – come what may. There had been no previous discussion. There was a spare plot of land and they were going to have it.

It finished up with police intervention and after much counter agreements and legal threats the travellers eventually – “moved on.”

Lesley Reuben’s prompt action as soon as she perceived evidence of an illegal intrusion deserves commendation. It was not allowed to extend any further.

Everyone sympathises with those in need of finding somewhere to call “home”. But to forcibly remove locks and set up on publicly owned property is completely illegal and must be stopped.

Just imagine what would have happened to public provided amenities if that had been allowed to go unheeded.

Hopefully the “intruders” found an alternative site. The law has to be obeyed. Thanks to Lesley for her action.

Police warning to drivers With summer having arrived, police are reminding everyone in Filton about the dangers and consequences of drink and drug driving.

Monday June 1 saw the launch of Operation Tonic, the month-long force-wide annual summer campaign to make the roads safer for all.

Town clerk’s report 2014/15 This year has been a difficult one with the council’s finances dropping to an all time low and immediate action having to be taken to reduce the outgoings and maximise any income.

This was taken very seriously by all managers who pulled together as a team and we are pleased to report that this had a significant impact on the end of year balances.

Office – during the year our Finance Officer resigned and we are now using accountants as a temporary solution to fill the post. Our Senior Administrator will soon be off on maternity leave. We wish Natasha Gould all the best and we’ll hope to see her back in due course.

Therefore there will be a need for the new council to make prompt decisions on the way forward.

The Management Team Scott Fessey has been in post as Leisure Centre Manager for 18 months and has been an asset to the centre. Two of our assistant managers have moved on to ventures new and we are currently working on a complete restructure of the management of the Centre.

Ken Hoare has been appointed Bar Supervisor and has done a fantastic job in

helping with the survival of the Ratepayers Arms. We are pleased to announce that this year will end on a positive note with the Ratepayers expected to have made a profit.

Neil Palmer continues as Maintenance Manager and as always has plenty of work on and off site to keep his team busy and keeping costs down.

I would like to thank all of the Managers and staff for their team work and the fantastic support that I receive from them all.

Play Area and Outdoor Gym Following funding from the New Homes Bonus we were able to provide outside gym equipment for residents to use free of charge.

Improvements to the play area have been a huge success with extra funding from Merlin Housing Association towards the fencing being greatly appreciated.

We are still in need of extra seating and picnic tables and are therefore on the lookout for anyone wishing to contribute or donate towards these.

Council The last year has had many tough challenges, none more so than the financial situation. Many lessons have been learned from this and the next council must continue to implement all the findings from the recent audit.

But also there were many positives, the launch of the outdoor gym and new play area, along with the outdoor cafe “The Hatch”. Also the community garden continues to flourish with a Royal Horticultural Society award received and many excellent events hosted, all the volunteers should be congratulated. The Ratepayers Arms has had a successful year also turning around this loss making pub into making a profit, with the foundations now in place for it to continue to grow and succeed.

I would like to wish all the

councillors leaving all the best for the future and thank them for their service to Filton Town Council.

Finally thank you to all my fellow councillors and staff for all your hard work and support during my time as chair. I have enjoyed being a town councillor and will miss no longer being part of the council, good luck to the next chair.

Income lowered by previous decisions, and a lack of increased expenditure caused by several factors, not all of which were outside of Filton’s control. The biggest expenditure this term seems to have been maintenance of old, and failing

equipment, running costs of same. Alongside this came Government changes to County funding, which impacted upon Town and Parish Councils. Staff costs seem to have been over budget for various reasons, which left Council with very little for improvements in facilities and the running of services.

That being said, there has been an upgrade of the play area, and the Community Garden.

Grants have been maintained as well, albeit lower than asked for. This Council finally rebuilt the Tennis Hut into a café facility for users of the Play area too, which brought income to the Ratepayers, directly and indirectly. This led to an upturn in the Ratepayers usage and income, which together with closer monitoring of costs put it into the break-even that was sort at the start of this financial year.

My wish for the future of Filton is that there will be tighter controls on the expenditure and more generation of income,

something this group of Councillors seemed reluctant to pursue.

Christy Moore was born in Newbridge, County Kildare, Ireland on May 7, 1945 so he’d turned 70 just a few days before this concert. “Happy birthday!” someone from the audience called as he walked on stage. Christy smiled wrily and replied, “I know, you don’t have to tell me, I don’t look a day over 69!”

Any Christy Moore concert is a big deal. As a solo artist and as a founder-member of the hugely influential bands Planxty and Moving Hearts, he’s one of the best-loved of contemporary Irish musicians, recording well over 30 albums,

the music is beautiful and the lyrics poetry.

What’s more, Christy Moore’s delivery is committed, he isn’t misrepresenting anyone, and he isn’t letting anyone down. There are no cliches, no stereotypes, no lies spun. He’s offering someone’s experience for you to feel, he’s creating “the language of the heart”.

It’s very moving, refreshing and empowering, because in this language of the heart, we remember what we are and who we are.

I suspect that after the General Election result, this was just what the audience needed. I also suspect people who vote Conservative don’t tend to go to Christy Moore concerts much.

Choreographer Louis Spence will be helping SGS College students celebrate their achievements at their annual Prize Day. The Dancing on Ice star will be joining the annual celebration on Friday, June 26, in Filton.

The event, which aims to recognise the successes of all completing students as well as honouring individual outstanding performances, will be followed by a special gig from Bristol band The Following Announcement at an after-party.

Sara-Jane Watkins, vice principal at SGS College said: “Prize Day is the college’s biggest event of the year.

More than 600 young people filled Woodhouse Park in Almondsbury during the last bank holiday weekend in May. Cubs and Scouts from across the region were attending BJam15 – or Brunel District Jamboree 2015 – and among them were nine Scouts and 17 cubs from 1st Filton.

For three days the young people took part in a wide range of activities, including archery, pioneering, climbing, orienteering, an aerial trek and abseiling.

Cub Laila said: “I was very nervous about abseiling down the 30m wall but also excited, once I got the hang of it I loved it and did it three times. Definitely my favourite activity, I was so proud of myself.”

Lots of different craft activities were on offer in the main marquee, including making leather woggles, bottle rockets,

glass etching, making clocks and wood burning. A popular choice for craft activities was creating the BJam15 badge logo. This was designed by 1st Filton Scout David Boyes, after his design was chosen from many competition entries.

During the evenings there was a chance to take part in traditional Scouting activities such as campfire sing-a-longs and wide games.

On Sunday, 12 Beavers joined the group to sample some of the activities, with lots of them gaining their first “nights away” badge.

Asked about his experience, Beaver Elliott said: “I loved sleeping in a tent for the first time with my friends and eating loads of sweets.” The inflatable village and low ropes were also a great hit.

jam-packed jamboree weekend said: “I thought the jamboree was very well organised with a selection of physical activities as well as crafts catering for all abilities. Singing songs around the camp fire was particularly fun and finished off with an amazing fireworks display.”

Over the past couple of years, the group has increased in popularity. To accommodate the growing number of young people, a second Beaver colony was added last year.

Following on from this, a second Cub pack is to be added in September. In order to facilitate this new pack, leaders are urgently needed.

Recycling centre to take fewer items to improve safety at site Filton residents are being warned of changes to the items they can take to their nearest recycling centre.

South Gloucestershire Council has announced it has reduced the range of items accepted at Stoke Gifford Sort It Centre, which is the smallest of its household waste facilities.

The changes, a spokesperson said, would open up more space to allow residents and staff to safely move around the site.

The following items can no longer be accepted at the Sort It centre: cans, aerosols and foil; paper; glass bottles and jars; plastics (bottles, yoghurt pots, margarine tubs etc - rigid/hard plastic items such as children’s toys and garden furniture will still be accepted); tyres; plasterboard; hardcore and rubble.

Residents can continue to recycle glass bottles and jars, cans, aerosols, foil, paper and plastics from home in their normal recycling containers.

A council spokesperson said: “To minimise the impact and inconvenience to local residents we have chosen to discontinue

the items that will affect the least number of people who use Stoke Gifford Sort It Centre.

“We have selected items that every household can dispose of through our normal household recycling collections, such as cans, glass, paper and plastics.

Others are items that residents

don’t need to dispose of on a regular basis, such as hardcore, rubble, plasterboard and tyres.

All of these items can still be taken to the other Sort It centres.

“Reducing the number of recyclable items that can be taken at Stoke Gifford will help to improve the safe manoeuvring areas where large vehicles and plant move the containers around the site. This will create a safer working environment for our site operatives and residents alike.”

The three other Sort It centres – Yate, Thornbury and Mangotsfield – have not been affected by these changes and will continue to accept all of these discontinued items.

Thousands sign up to GP web service Nearly 205,000 patients in Bristol, Somerset and South Gloucestershire are now registered to book GP appointments and order repeat prescriptions online.

The number of GPs offering appointments, repeat prescriptions and access to summary information in medical records online has tripled in the first three months of the year.

Data published this week by the Health and Care Information Centre shows that at the end of March 2015, more than 95 per cent of practices in Bristol, Somerset and South Gloucestershire are offering these services.

In order to register for online services, patients will need to check that their GP practice is providing this service, and then provide proof of identification (such as a passport) to the surgery in order to be registered.

Skate park to be scene for ‘epic day’ of fundraising, skating and music The wheels are in motion for a charity fundraiser at Filton Skate Park this month, hosted by a local business that produces bespoke handcrafted skateboards.

Proceeds from the “epic day” of skating and live music will go to Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), an environmental charity that campaigns for cleaner oceans and beaches.

The organisers of the familyfriendly event are three local friends with a passion for skating and surfing – Sam Hunt, Jake Ponting and Fred Loosmore – and it coincides with the launch of their online venture Backbone.

Jake, who is in his final year at university studying media, told Filtonvoice: “We have been regular users of the skate park in Filton for quite some time

now and thought that it would not only be a good place to have a launch event, but a good place to bring together other members of the surrounding community to show off what a brilliant skate park Filton has to offer.

“We also thought it would help to dissuade people’s

misconception that skate parks are noisy and antisocial.

“Our aim is to promote a style of skateboarding that is both physically healthy and beneficial to the community by bringing people together.”

Community invited to join the fun and celebrate summer with school Preparations are well under way for the Charborough Road Primary School Summer Fete and organisers say it promises to be one of the biggest and best yet.

Here they tell us about what’s in store for visitors.

The barbecue will be sizzling, and the ice cream van and candy floss man are booked. There will be plenty to keep the children entertained, including – new for this year – an inflatable obstacle course and a Shaun the Sheep Treasure Hunt, as well as old favourites like the bouncy castle, beat the goalie, splat the rat, a coconut shy and lots more games.

There are bargains a-plenty to be had at the bottle tombola, bidding wall, cake stall and asnew stall. For those who like to beat the odds, first prize in this year’s raffle is £100 worth of shopping vouchers and the top prize on the Lucky Date Board is £100 in cash!

Catherine Gregory, this year’s organiser, said: “The annual fete is our biggest event of the year, and the money raised really does make a big difference to local children – supplementing things like visits by travelling theatre companies, the science dome, school trips and play equipment among many other things that contribute to Charborough Road Primary School children’s educational experience.”

Shield Road Primary

During Election week the children took part in activities to learn about the General Election.

They learnt about the importance of voting, listening to different opinions and taking part in respectful discussion.

The children took part in a mock election which involved different candidates with their own manifestos. The candidates

gave speeches in assembly and shared their manifestos and at the end of the week the children voted for their preferred party.

All votes were cast in a voting booth with a special ballot box!

The winning party was the Blue Galaxy Party and the Prime Minister was Scott from Year 3. Mr Mepham congratulated the parties for putting up great campaigns.

Orchard School

Delicious food, coupled with glorious sunshine, made Orchard School’s recent Food Festival a big hit with families.

Hundreds flocked through the doors on May 16 to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon out for all the family.

Festival-goers enjoyed cooking demonstrations, pampering sessions, a farmers’ market and ‘Get Active’ zone, plus plenty of opportunity to get mucky with food.

Promoting healthy eating and celebrating the delicious food from within the local community were the festival’s aims.

The event, in conjunction with the With One Voice Partnership (WOVP) – a collaboration between Orchard, Filton Avenue Junior School, Filton Avenue Infant School and Upper Horfield Community School, along with

other community groups – follows on from the successful inaugural event last year.

Year 11 students have been enjoying a spot of breakfast as they wait to go into GCSE exams.

This can be a really stressful time for students and so we are working hard to help support them. We have run an assembly to help students with some techniques for dealing with stress and ran an after school session last week with the school counsellor offering more specific

advice. We have also thought about the start of the exams and tried to create a more relaxed and supportive environment.

To achieve this we have opened the main hall to students for at least 30 minutes before the start of their exam. There is free toast or fruit available to them and a number of staff members helping people with some key advice and ensuring they are relaxed and ready for the exam.

Seussical the Musical On Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th June, Years 3, 4, and 5 children gave two spectacular performances of ‘Seussical the Musical’ at Abbeywood School.

They acted, danced and sang their hearts out with the aid of brilliant props, scenery and costumes made by our fabulous staff team.

No more Windows?

OK, well we aren’t being quite truthful! Actually what we mean is that Microsoft have stated that Windows 10 will be the last version of their operating system with a number! When Windows 10 is released this summer, all updates will be released as Microsoft decide. There will not be a Windows 11.

This is a move away from a single version of Windows that you install with your PC but more towards a service that is

licenced for when you use it.

Rather than waiting for a big update with new features, the belief is that the features will be released when they are available. Remember, all Windows 7 and 8 users have been promised a free upgrade in the first year of its release.

This is more like Apple Macs where big, free updates are released every so often for their computers. There are still likely to be occasional major updates, but we will have to see how this works out in the future.

In Windows 10 news, there will be a new function called Cortana, which is a voiceactivated app that you can use to control windows, open apps, run searches and much more. I can’t wait to try that one!
