After 50 years, Filton pre-school faces closure Filton Park Pre-school Playgroup will close after the next academic year - ending 50 years of early years care and education for Filton children.

The site in Charborough Road will become part of a wider redevelopment which includes the former training buildings and Charborough Road School.

Filtonvoice understands South Glos Council and the Olympus Trust are in discussions over part of the land being used as an extended field space for the school with the remaining area, including the pre-school site, to be developed.

Staff at the pre-school have agreed with South Glos that the 2019/20 academic year will be the last and it is believed some pre-school education may be offered within Charborough Road Primary.

children, will mean limited opportunities for parents in Filton with the Bluebell preschool at Shield Road the only comparable facility in Filton.

Long-serving pre-school leaders Sue Packham and Viv Kidd said that South Glos had previously agreed to keep the pre-school on the site, with the team looking to seek grants to redevelop the building.

They said: "We are gutted for the children. Filton does not have enough pre-school spaces now.

"We do so much to get children ready for primary school, assisting where there are special needs and helping the parents."

They said a lot of the decorating work in the playgroup was done by the staff themselves.

They added that communication with South Glos had not been good and they had to fight to be allowed an extension for the next year.

The pre-school pays rent to South Glos of just over £7,000 per academic year.

A South Glos spokesman

said: "Plans to make changes on the Charborough Road site surrounding the Charborough Road Primary School have been in development for a number of years.

"A number of council services that used to be delivered there have moved elsewhere. We are discussing with local providers of existing schools the possibility of on-site provision of a pre-school in the future.

“We have recently met with the pre-school and agreed to grant an extension to their lease so that they can remain in their current home until the end of the next academic year - 19/20. We understand that families will be keen to know what options for pre-school provision there are in the area for the future and while discussions are still going on, we would emphasise that we are confident there will be adequate places for the number of preschoolers after 19/20."

Town councillor Adam Monk, who has been working with the pre-school, said: ""I am frustrated at South Glos for moving the goalposts but we are working now to ensure we can provide for the demand in the local area."

I have two children, both of which have been fortunate to have attended Filton park pre school playgroup.

I am truly appalled at the treatment and blatant disregard that South Gloucestershire Council have displayed with approaching the redevelopment of FPPP grounds.

The pre-school has been in existence since the 1950’s and is an important part of the community in Filton Park.

Despite the building being in a poor condition, the staff have lovely displays and decorations with pictures of the children and their work, making it feel a warm and cosy place to be. All of the staff have given many years of service to the pre-school and put the children and their needs at the heart of it as well as keeping it affordable for local families.

I am very sad to hear the preschool is closing and just feel relief that I do not have any more children needing pre-school care after this year as I simply don't know what I would do."

'Coffee, jobs and great food' as kiosk to relaunch

by Keri Beckingham The new manager of the outdoor food kiosk at Elm Park has given Filton Voice a behind-thescenes look before it reopens this summer.

As previously reported, the kiosk (which was previously known as The Hatch and run by Gavin Horswell) ceased trading as Elm Eats late last year and closed just months after caterer Aaron Phillips began trading.

In February, youth and community charity FACE Filton announced that they wanted to open it as a social enterprise, offering training and job opportunities for adults with learning or social disabilities, after town councillors agreed to an initial three-month trial period.

Now, the charity has taken on a manager and development worker to run the kiosk, which will be called The Pod in The

Florence in the hatch Park. Florence Pardoe used to work for another charity in Southmead and is passionate about promoting great food in the local community. In her new role, she will be taking on everything from staffing, stock, and deciding what food and drinks the kiosk will serve.

Speaking about the charity’s

plans for the kiosk, she said: “This is a new approach for the kiosk, which will aim to offer employment for those who are keen to work but find it hard to find opportunities. Of the adults with learning difficulties that are known to the government, only 6% are in employment, and when asked 65% would like to be, so

initiatives like this will make a big difference to households.

“We are going to start expanding slowly but surely, and will hopefully be starting with a soft launch at weekends in mid July with simple drinks and snacks. It is going to take time to roll everything out, and although our staff are eager to learn and hard working, as it is likely to be their first time working in a food business it will take a while for them to get up to speed. We will be serving good food but not necessarily fast food, and we need to get everything in place before we can fully launch over the summer.

“We know that people are itching to see it reopen – we did a community survey to ask people what they’d like to see from the new kiosk, and we had a great response. Although it could take a little while before we are really up and running, we can promise

She added: “We’re excited to be serving the community of Filton. I really believe in the power of food, and the huge potential it has to bring people together, change communities and have a positive impact on the planet and environment.

“Providing for people and cooking for people brings a huge amount of joy

to me, and being able to support local producers and allow people to engage with where their food has come from is something that I think is really exciting.”

The charity is also hoping to paint a mural on the kiosk, and are looking for donations to help with this. The kiosk will also be looking to employ people in supervisor roles and there will be opportunities for people in hospitality, as well as volunteer openings.

A very special officer ... dedicated Roland 'delighted' after winning prestigious award Celebrating the men, women and teams who go above and beyond to keep our communities safe was at the heart of this year’s Avon and Somerset Police Be Proud Awards, which took place at Cadbury House Hotel on Wednesday 12 June 2019.

And it was a special night for Filton Special Inspector Roland Lowe from Filton Beat Team, who took the award for Special Constable of the Year.

Roland was recognised for the sheer dedication he brings to the job.

Chief Officer David Farrell, who presented the award, said: "Since becoming a Special, Roland has put in a massive amount of hours into the organisation, particularly in 2017 when he worked in excess of 1,000 hours. He is a credit to the force."

Roland said: “I’m very delighted to take away this award this evening.

"It’s one of those things that no one expects to win to be honest.

"Just being nominated was more than enough - it felt like I had won already - but to actually take the award home is just fantastic.”

The awards, jointly hosted by the Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens and Chief Constable Andy Marsh, recognised 24 individuals and six teams for their outstanding work and dedication. BBC Radio Bristol’s Emma Britton compered the evening, and local people and organisations said a massive thank you to the unsung heroes by sending their well wishes via video before the ceremony commenced.

During the awards ceremony, two special individuals were recognised with a new award, the ‘Inclusion Award.’ The surprise award recognises those within policing who have worked tirelessly to create better relationships between victims, communities and the police as well as significant learning within the organisation.

Sergeant Adam O’Loughlin has gone above and beyond in raising the profile of autism in the organisation and supporting those with autism in the community. He has worked on many new initiatives including: lobbying to ensure that autism is added as a distinct strand of hate crime; initiated changes to custody to ensure that all autistic detainees are recognised and provided with appropriate support; and he is currently looking at various strands of work to encourage more neurodiverse staff in the organisation.

supporting men and boys who have been victims of serious sexual assault.

He has arranged several events in his own time to examine how best to work in partnership to achieve better outcomes for all victims. His personal dedication in keeping people safe, giving them back some power and control in their lives when they are at their lowest ebb is second to none.

We want to trace bike thieves A concern to me this month is the rise in thefts of motorbikes from the Mackie Ave and Shields retail areas of Filton.

Bikes are being ridden around on Elm Park and eventually dumped in lanes nearby. A mixed race male has been seen in this area at the time of the offences and he could be linked to local youths in Filton.

‘High-powered and pacey’ – Orchard School goes from strength to strength Teaching staff from Orchard School in Horfield have been praised in glowing terms by Ofsted inspectors, who described the quality of teaching and learning as ‘high powered, pacey and demanding’.

The inspection team, which visited last month, said Orchard School was on ‘an ambitious path’ academically – while the 11-16 school was also was ‘highly effective’ in its pastoral role for the children.

They said the result of this high quality teaching was that students ‘respond with energy and eagerness and are keen to … make contributions to lessons’.

The school was judged ‘Good’ by lead inspector Michael Merchant and head teacher Julia Hinchliffe said she was delighted

that her staff’s cutting edge approach to classroom teaching had been recognised.

In a letter to Mrs Hinchliffe, inspector Mr Merchant said: • Teachers, invariably, have a good knowledge and understanding of the subject they teach.

• Staff use this strong subject knowledge to create questions in class that are precise and targeted • Teachers expect much of their pupils, both in terms of work rate and in intellectual demand • Pupils, particularly the most able, respond with energy and eagerness.

• The most able pupils grow in confidence and quickly develop a deep understanding of their work.

• Teaching is now successful at encouraging middle-attaining pupils to develop their understanding across a range of subjects, to feel challenged and supported in lessons and not to be afraid of making mistakes.

Mr Merchant also praised work done outside the classroom.

He said: “There is strong pastoral and multi-agency work…a highly effective team... and very effective pastoral managers.

“Pupils have access to a wealth of curriculum, pastoral and online guidance that ensures that they know how to keep themselves safe. They report that lessons are calm and orderly.”

He added that comments made by parents also added to the positive ethos of the school.

He told Mrs Hinchliffe: “You reach out to your local community in a very real way.

Parents are overwhelmingly supportive and appreciative of your work and that of your staff.

“One parent spoke for many when saying: ‘This school has been amazing. I can't believe how well they have communicated with us, supported my child emotionally and challenged her with her learning. Any issues I raise with them are dealt with really effectively. I can see how much each and every teacher really cares for all of the pupils. I could not imagine a better place for my child’s education. I cannot praise this school enough’.”

Mrs Hinchliffe, whose leadership team was described as ‘sharing high ambitions for pupils’, said: “The whole staff team have pulled together magnificently to drive the changes I needed to implement since starting as headteacher in September 2017.

"The Ofsted inspectors could see just how far we have come. The quality of teaching and learning at Orchard School is phenomenally good, and inspectors were really blown away by what they saw in every single classroom.

"Students are receiving a very good education at Orchard School, and the inspectors could sense our warm and positive learning environment which is leading to rapidly improving outcomes for students.

"This Ofsted report confirms without doubt that Orchard School is on a very exciting journey to deliver outstanding education for our children and young people.”

Council may target all-day 'Elm parkers' Filton Town Council is investigating a scheme which would see all-day car parking outlawed at Elm Park. Car owners use the car park on a regular basis as a 'park and ride' or as a free option near to the large workplaces.

Now councillors have asked the town clerk to investigate bringing in a company to manage the car park which could lead to fines for those who leave their car for more than three hours.

The council has been at pains to stress this scheme would NOT affect any users of the facilities at Elm Park such as swimmers and football teams.

The scheme would also stop anti-social parkers who block fire exits and footpaths. Although councillors had reservations about such a scheme they have asked town clerk Lesley Reuben to investigate further.

l On Facebook, local people have been giving their views: Rachael Wood: I'd suggest putting a pay and display machine in with the first 3 hours free.

One potential issue is the surrounding roads so perhaps it's worth stepping up the parking attendants for a while to avoid the residents being aggrieved.

Pete Holcombe: Good idea in theory but I expect cars will use Elm Park and Charborough Rd instead.

Sean Walsh: Is it that much of a

problem? I am sure enforcement will not be free and if not a private concern will nail people for spending 30 seconds too much in the park or pool.

Michael Walker: I agree with the scheme. If local employers do not provide adequate parking for their employees then local residents should not be burdened either near

their homes or at local amenities.

Sending a message to the rogue parkers, and more importantly their employers, must be the way forward.

Deborah Rudman: It needs to be looked into more thoroughly first! How many cars are we talking about? When I walk/run through I don't think it's that busy during the day. Is it financially worthwhile for only a few cars? It might put more people off going there.

Hannah Rudman: I think it's a great idea, I've been up there many times to use the pool or soft play and found there's no where to park, parking should only be for people using the facilities.

Helen Johnson: Is it really a problem getting a parking space in the daytime? If the idea is to generate income most likely benefits would go to the parking company, not The Ratepayers.

Raising funds to find cure for this terrible disease

by Keri Beckingham A local family are raising funds to help find a cure for severe muscular dystrophy.

Six-year old Tommy Mikkelson lives in Patchway with his parents Richard and Sharon, and eight-year old sister Susie.

Just before his third birthday, Tommy was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, an X chromosome-linked muscle wasting condition with no known cure which affects almost always boys. Most boys are confined to a wheelchair before they reach their teens, and the condition is 100 per cent fatal, with an average life expectancy of around 27. Some sufferers have been known to live into their 30s and 40s, however in some cases children sadly won’t make it into their teens.

Filton and works at Asda, said: “Tommy is a bright and articulate boy with a great sense of humour and a lot of determination. He enjoys cars, nature and Lego, which he is very good at.

“It was important to us that he went to mainstream school as we think it's very important that his life is as 'normal' as possible.

Going to school with fully ablebodied children does come with issues as he can't run as fast or play as rough as the other boys, but he still manages to be included.

“Since Tommy started steroids three years ago he has gained a lot of strength and we have seen many changes in his physical ability. To see your six- year old son jump with two feet off the floor for the first time is an amazing thing, something we never thought we would see.

However, steroids also come with emotional/behavioural issues

"We are well aware that he will reach what they call a plateau in the next few years and his ability will decline dramatically, first losing his ability to walk and then his upper body strength.

“It’s so hard listening to Tommy tell you about what he will do when he is older, knowing unless there’s a miracle that this will never happen. We spend

our days controlling information which is very difficult in the age of the internet, especially as Susie is very smart and very internet savvy. " Richard also told The Voice that Tommy currently needs help with getting dressed/undressed, using the toilet and any type of steps. Although he can walk very short distances, he has a manual wheelchair for anything else.

In addition, Richard said that Tommy’s condition means that it is difficult for him to take part in soft-play birthday parties with his friends.

On Thursday July 11, Richard, his dad Dave (who is well known in the Filton area as chair of the community garden) and brother Chris will be setting off on a sponsored walk from Ashton Gate to St Mary's stadium in Southampton to raise money for Action Duchenne, a charity that funds research into a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

They have chosen the route, which covers a distance of 79 miles, due to the 79 missing exons in the dystrophin gene which causes the condition.

They also have the backing of Muscular Dystrophy UK, who are supplying them with t-shirts.

This is the family’s second attempt at fundraising for Tommy, after they previously

raised £10,000 for the power chair he will need in the future.

Commenting on the walk, Richard said: “It's nice to feel you are doing something for the cause, funding important gene therapy trials that could one day see a cure for this condition which robs young men and their families of a life we take for granted. I’m especially looking forward to taking on the challenge with my dad and my brother who always back me up.

“Our family and friends have been a huge support, and we are extremely grateful for all they have done for us.”

The school is asking local people to help them by dropping off their personal care and beauty waste to the school’s reception.

The ‘Recycle Plastic to Make Your School Fantastic’ contest ends on July 5 and the winner will be the school that sends in the most personal care and beauty waste for recycling by the end of the contest.

Filton Twinning Association is ready for their 2019 trip to Witzenhausen in Germany this month.

Around 30 people will be going on the coach from Filton with several others travelling by car - and one member, Helen Johnson, on a bicycle (see more below)!

The party will leave Filton on July 24 with a stop-over at Aachen before arriving on July 25 in Witzenhausen.

There will be eight young people aged 11 to 21 going from FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) along with three staff members and

they will have a camp set up in Witzenhausen.

The rest of visitors will be put up by twinning hosts. There are five days of activities including an Ecumenical Service for all three Towns in the twinning group – St Vallier-sur-Rhone in France is the third; a day out near Hann Munden for the Filton visitors; and time spent with the individual hosts. l On July 8 at 10am, supporters are invited to see Helen Johnson off on her solo 700 mile ride, raising funds for FACE. This will start from the kiosk on Elm Park which FACE are just about to open up as 'Pod in the Park'.

She hopes to cover around 40-50 miles a day.

On July 24 she will be welcomed by young cyclists on the last leg of the journey from Hann Munden to Witzenhausen.

So far around £500 of £2,000 target raised which will go towards the cost of FACE young people's visit expenses.

Landmark opening as tool giants open in Filton

Toolstation has created seven new jobs for local people in Filton with the opening of its landmark 350th branch.

This is the latest in the growing network of UK branches opened by the retailer, which is headquartered in Bridgwater.

Bosses say this demonstrates their continued commitment to making it easy for trade professionals and home improvers to get the supplies they need, when they need them.

Young gardeners have begun their weekly sessions at Filton Community Garden.

The Filton Sapplings group began with 14 youngsters turning up and conducting soil tests as well as weeding. (See page 45 for dates) They meet on Mondays at 3.30pm while the garden community are also running 'Meet up and Garden' sessions on Mondays at 1.30pm for adult gardeners.

Spokeswoman Helen Johnson said: "July is a busy month as we will also be getting ready for the It's Your Neighbourhood RHS assessment and for the Summer Fete on 21 July.

"Other activities going on in the garden are Rhyme and Story by Filton Library and an Airbus family day. A wall is being built along path from the car park in next few weeks to make access easier. This will be painted later in the year by SGS College with a magical mural designed around the garden's themes."

ust you wait… every time I thought about writing this article, something more urgent cropped up.

Something pressing like: loading the washing machine, paying the gas bill or cleaning the bath.

I have noticed that I only procrastinate when there is a risk of failure. I don’t procrastinate when I book cinema tickets, a meal out or a hair cut.

No, procrastination only comes when there is a spreadsheet to populate, a report to author or an article to write. Research shows that I must be anxious about the negative consequences of my actions when I attack these types of tasks. (I really don’t need a Professor to tell me this, but I welcome the procrastination involved in researching these findings).

I find that mindless tasks have an uncanny knack of unlocking my creative side and solving some problems. When loading the dishwasher I sometimes find the introduction to a report that may have festered and defeated me for days.

So I need to be kinder about my procrastination. I need to remind myself that I may be using this time creatively to incubate ideas. I may look like I am eating dry cereal from the box or painting my toe nails, but in truth I am limbering up mentally and emotionally. David can slay Goliath…he just needs time.

I like working under pressure. Perhaps I am consciously procrastinating to waste enough time to create this pressure; how impressive am I? Now that you understand my way of working, perhaps you can come up with your own ending for this article? I need to organise my candles in height order across the mantlepiece! www.thedragonfyjar.com

Pupils from Shield Road Primary in Filton are great readers - and now their love of stories means the school has won £100 of books for their library.

The school were invited by Tutor Doctor to nominate their favourite books and then share this on Facebook. Shield Road parents and friends did just that and the school was one of the top two in the Bristol area in the competition. The two winning schools chose their books and they were delivered last month.

Wind and rain but lots of laughs for kids Review Gangsta Granny Compass Point School by Ruth Drury In the middle of Compass Point school field, on a drizzly Bristol evening, sat well over 200 happy people, watching a Heartbreak Productions performance of Gangsta Granny. Putting the field to great use, the PTA organised this treat for the locals while raising funds with a bbq and Bar. The children of all ages sat captivated at the cast who performed with music, song, electric scooters and plastic piping.

The cast encouraged audience participation and the nearby audience definitely enjoyed the bowl of cabbage soup thrown at them, not to mention the many dance

lessons taught by the fabulous Flávio, played by Danny Milwain, who was ‘amazing’ .

The frequent windy moments from Gran, played by Gina George, kept the children smiling from the very start with a lovely relationship between ‘Ben’, played

by Darryl Hughes and his Granny.

Sirona is a not-for-profit social enterprise providing high-quality NHS and local authority-funded community health and care services across South Gloucestershire, parts of Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset. It was founded on October 1, 2011, and holds an annual ceremony to recognise the achievements of staff close to its birthday each year.

Sirona chairman Simon Knighton, pictured, said: "We have always said our staff are the most important part of Sirona and recognising their achievements is really close to my heart.

“From the thousands of compliments and letters which we receive each year from people in the communities we serve, we know our staff deliver high quality services, day in, day out.

“They all give care as they would want for their own loved one, which is part of our Taking it Personally ethos.

"While the majority of award categories are for internal nominations, we have one called ‘I think they deserve it’ and we are looking for the public's help to find a winner or winners.

“We want to hear about the person who brightened up your day because of their welcoming smile or who made a difference to your care in the way they tailored the service to suit you or something else.

“Last year, we had so many nominations we gave two awards, with the Hanham district nursing team scooping one and the staff at our extra care facility at St John's Court in Bath the other. People told us about the hard work and dedication of both teams, with the nurses described by one individual as her ‘safety net’, while the team at St John's were praised for making a difference to a tenant's life by encouraging her independence.”

Following on from the election the induction of members, decision making, and scrutiny of those decisions is set to recommence.

In June I attended the Cabinet meeting. I questioned the Executive Member on the reported GDPR compliance issues, additionally I challenged the provision of Adult Social Care.

Within the same report there was mention of the Filton Enterprise Zone and I quizzed the executive member about the many issues facing Filton.

The implementation of Open Plus to South Glos Libraries reports that 13% of Library Users are taking up this option. This is exceptionally low and we are asking if library

What a wash out June was ... unfortunately such poor weather brings with it a multitude of different issues such as waterlogged roads and pavements. One such trouble spot is the path along Station Road which passes under the railway bridge. I have been out with council officers to get the gullies cleared and set in motion plans to have all of the muck and dirt removed. This has been allowed to accumulate for years and has undoubtedly contributed to clogged drains.

Hopefully the weather will be better for the Filton Festival on the 14th of July. I pay tribute to all those volunteers who make it a real community event and am looking forward to meeting many groups on the day.

I have become known to some as ‘rusty post man’ so you’ll not be surprised when I say I have taken officers to see some of our worst offenders.

This summer South Gloucestershire District Council will modernise the Report It feature on its website. This will enable residents to ‘log on’ to the system, in so doing it will save your details and enable you to track issues you have reported much easier than at present. This is an issue I raised with the Chief Executive so I am very pleased it is nearly ready to roll out.

New station at Filton will be part of Green future

L

ike many people, I was gripped by David Attenborough’s recent documentary about climate change. He paints a compelling picture of the challenges the UK and the world faces, and it reaffirmed the importance of continuing the carbon reduction we’re already making in the West of England.

We’ve made a strong start by reducing our carbon emissions by 35% since 2005, while also achieving a 45% growth in our regional economy. This proves that economic growth can be achieved alongside ambitious carbon reduction.

However, I know we have much more to do, so I’m pleased to announce the launch of the West of England Low Carbon Challenge Fund which will provide millions of pounds of extra funding to help businesses make their buildings and

activities more energy efficient.

We also host the new South West Energy Hub which works to improve the energy efficiency of homes. The Hub offers advice and funding to help communities begin using renewable electricity and heat.

It is our councils which are tasked with improving air

quality, but I’m determined to play my part too. I am working to improve congestion and the air we breathe by investing in public transport and encouraging people to leave their cars at home. For example, our railway plans will see new stations built at North Filton in this area, Henbury, Ashley Down,

Portishead and Pill, connecting new communities to the railways.

I realise that we need a range of options to encourage people to leave the car at home. Thousands of people are now choosing to use Metrobus each month and we have already seen an 18% shift away from car usage in a recent passenger survey. We will be building on this success by extending Metrobus to Cribbs Patchway and our plans include new walking and cycling routes to give residents even more alternatives to using a car.

Our recent progress should inspire us to continue moving towards a more sustainable, low-carbon future. I have been focusing on improving public transport and supporting projects which will help businesses and residents improve their energy efficiency. There is a way to go yet, but we are moving in the right direction.

Top apprentice Daniel's drive to help others with autism A student at Filton's SGS College has been named Bristol and Bath Apprentice of the Year after turning his autism into a strength, not only for himself but for others.

Daniel John was elated to win not one but two awards: Outstanding Apprentice of the Year – Health, Education & Care – Private or Public Sector, and the top award of the evening, Bristol & Bath Apprentice of the Year.

SGS Assistant Principal, Patrick Mcleod, pictured with Daniel, said: “Daniel’s story is the absolute epitome of what the apprenticeship programme is all about. He has turned his autism into a strength, not only for himself but in supporting many others. He is a very deserving winner, and we are very proud of him.”

West, best describes Daniel’s achievements: “Daniel has surpassed any expectations I might ever have had about what an apprentice might achieve.

"I would have expected someone who is eager to learn,

develop and impress. This described Daniel perhaps at the outset of his apprenticeship but once his self-confidence grew, he has gone on to make huge changes in the Council that he has brought about himself, due

to his genuine aspiration to make positive changes for others.

"When Daniel asked me if he could create a presentation on the Autism Spectrum for our team day, I was impressed. When I saw the presentation I was blown away.

"Like a professional course, it was confidently delivered but it also changed my understanding utterly.”

Another example of a positive impact Daniel has had is in the creation of a sensory garden.

He said:“I was inspired by one of my coping strategies, walking outside and enjoying the therapeutic effects of natural stimuli such as the birds singing and the smell of the plants.

"I intend to do further work around autism, helping to make workplaces more autism friendly.

My ambition is to see the autism employability gap closed significantly.”

Something for everyone at this year's festival

This year's Filton Festival is shaping up to be one of the best yet, with activities and entertainment for all the family, and no shortage of food and drink to enjoy.

The annual event gets underway at noon on Saturday, July 14 on the field at Elm Park.

At time of printing, four bands have been confirmed and a feature will be a spectacular Zumba performance.

The children's area will have a variety of activities - all enclosed inside two world-inspired Tipi Tents.

And youngsters can take part in a fancy dress competition and parade - see poster right.

The familiar Jenkins Fair will also be on site and food and drink from around the world will delight all tastebuds!

Wellbeing FREE sessions

Prizes: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Prizes will be awarded to each group who will receive their prizes on stage later on in the day.

After a rainy few weeks the sun came out for the Charborough Road Primary summer fete on Saturday, June 22.

The visitors had a great time taking part in the many activities including an inflatable obstacle course, slippery pole and soak the teacher.

A guest appearance from Storm Troopers and the police did not disappoint. The siren could be heard more than once!

This year we had a performance stage and amazing acts including a karate performance by 'Tiny Titans Pre-school' and gymnastics, comedy, keyboard playing and dances from the pupils of Charborough Road.

A member of staff from a Filton opticians took on the SimplyHealth Great Bristol 10k and raised funds for CLIC Sargent.

Store manager Maria Matuszak, from Specsavers on Church View, Filton completed the race last month. Starting in the historic harbourside area, the route took her through iconic Bristol landmarks including the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Avon Gorge.

"The 10k route was a challenge but extremely rewarding," said Maria.

Last year, Specsavers in Cribbs Causeway, Bradley Stoke and Filton came together and nominated CLIC Sargent as their charity partner.

Teams took part in several fundraising challenges and events throughout the year and raised almost £7,000 for the children’s cancer charity.

Pioneering robotic cancer surgery in Bristol will be expanded to treat more types of cancer following the success of Southmead Hospital Charity’s £2million Prostate Cancer Care Appeal.

Thanks to donors and fundraisers the charity’s Prostate Cancer Care Appeal has now purchased two surgical robots to treat more men with prostate cancer and to expand robotic surgery into other urological and gynaecological cancers.

The Charity launched the £2million appeal in 2016 and since then the charity has contributed £1.5m to the appeal, with further £500,000 ongoing costs met by North Bristol NHS Trust.

Southmead Hospital is one of the largest urological centres in the country, treating thousands of patients with prostate cancer a year.

J

une saw the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Operation Neptune, the Allied Forces’ landings at Normandy on D-Day, which led to the liberation of France and the defeat of the Nazis. However, this came at a cost of more than 10,000 Allied casualties, including at least 4,414 confirmed dead fighting on the beaches of Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. A reminder, indeed, that freedom isn’t free and we should never take for granted the fact that we live in a free country.

Events have been held across Europe remembering and honouring the sacrifices made and the heroic acts which helped claw our continent back from the brink and restore the vibrant liberal democracies that the citizens of Europe can now live, work and thrive in. It gave me great pleasure to see British service personnel deployed from the coasts of Somalia, Kabul in Afghanistan, the Baltic Sea and

beyond, taking time away from their important duties to honour their forbears, whose mantle they have taken up to ensure people have the opportunity today to live free.

I had the amazing privilege of attending the commemorative lunch organised by Blind Veterans, a fantastic charity which works diligently to ensure that those who have lost their sight whilst serving our country are not alone and have the rehabilitation, training, advice, and emotional support they need.

I was proud to be accompanying John Maloney, Chair of Stoke Gifford’s Royal British Legion

to this extremely well-attended event, pictured left. I had the opportunity to meet and speak with many veterans and hear about the roles they played in D-Day and other war efforts, as well as the fulfilling lives they have been able to live after service.

Whilst it is normally in November that we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, this experience and special anniversary has given me pause for thought and reflection.

Gratitude is important and we must all recognise that none of us live free and happy on our own.

None of us could ever repay the debts of honour and gratitude that we owe to those who came before us and those who now strive in the spirit of public service and our national defence today.

However, we can remember this and be humbled by and thankful for it.

We should all take note that

we live in a community that continues to make a strong contribution to the enduring legacy of free societies, protected by the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of our armed forces. I want to personally thank everyone in our area who has either served in the armed forces, or worked for one of the many local companies whose products help to keep these brave people safe and wellequipped whilst they protect us and our freedoms.

It is worth remembering the immortal words of American President Ronald Reagan, given on Omaha beach to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Normandy landings: “We will always remember; we will always be proud; we will always be prepared, so that we may be always free”.

Litter louts facing doubling of fines to £150

payment of £50 within 10 days.

A report to cabinet says extra money from the higher fines could pay for a dedicated council officer on the street to issue fixed penalty notices (FPNs).

It says: “Increasing the amount charged for FPNs would open more options with regards to tackling environmental offences in South Gloucestershire.

“There is the potential that with increased fines we could fund an officer being set up on the street with the specific job of issuing FPNs for environmental offences.

“Littering has long been an issue of concern.

“The Litter Strategy for England 2017 quotes 28 to 30 per cent of people perceive ‘litter and rubbish lying around’ to be a problem in their area.

“In 2016 the RSPCA received over 5,000 phone calls about litter-related incidents affecting animals.

“In 2018 the council’s Viewpoint survey showed 38 per cent of residents believe litter and rubbish lying around is a ‘fairly big’ or a ‘very big’ issue in their local area.

“A survey carried out in 2010

by Keep Britain Tidy revealed that one in five people admitted littering. In 2018/19, nine per cent of inspected areas in South Gloucestershire were determined to have unacceptable levels of litter.

Arena for Filton: Miles Leonard, the man who launched the career of Coldplay and relaunched the career of soon to be Glastonbury ‘legend’ Kylie Minogue, will be joining the YTL Arena team in Filton as an advisor.

He will be one of a number of industry experts being brought on board to advise the YTL Arena team.

The family-run Malaysian company is proposing to build the third largest UK arena by turning the former Brabazon hangars next to the historic Filton Airfield into a visionary entertainment destination. It will include a 17,000 capacity arena, attracting international artists, family entertainment and sporting events.

“In February 2019 the Town and Parish Council Forum identified littering as an issue they want South Gloucestershire Council to address.

“The council incurs costs in clearing litter, graffiti and fly-posting, and using traffic management to clear litter from the public highway and associated land.

“This work also places our

staff at risk while clearing such litter.

“Litter and other environmental quality issues significantly influence the perceptions of the local area for residents, communities and businesses.

“Adoption and proactive implementation of increased fines would help tackle these issues.”

Bath & North East Somerset Council has already adopted the maximum £150 fine for dropping rubbish.

In March, South Gloucestershire Council became the first local authority outside London to introduce a £150 fixed penalty notice for motorists littering from car windows.

Fines for dog fouling are not included in the report to be considered by cabinet on Monday because they have already been increased to the maximum level under different rules.

South Glos council cabinet members are being advised to increase fixed penalty notices from £75 to £150 across the whole district.

There will be a 50 per cent discount for anyone who pays within 10 days.

Filton residents have, for several years, complained to the town council that the increase in the number of takeaways, especially on Filton Avenue, has contributed to problem littering.

But despite the proposed hardline approach,South Glos says it focuses more on educating people than on enforcement, issuing just 11 notices in 2018 for local environment equality offences including dog-fouling and dropping rubbish.

The officer recommendations include an automatic increase in line with any future rises announced by the Government in the maximum fines that local authorities can charge people for littering.

Graffiti and fly-posting will also carry a £150 fixed penalty notice under the new policy, which is due to be agreed by South Gloucestershire Council cabinet on Monday, June 17.

The maximum permitted level of fines will be extended to other local environment offences, including putting household waste in the wrong bin (£80), nuisance parking (£100) and abandoning a vehicle (£200), with each carrying a promptpayment fee reduction.

The charges are an alternative to prosecution, although anybody handed one can challenge the notice in magistrates’ court.

At present, anyone caught littering in South Gloucestershire is charged £75, with a reduced
