MP hits out at Airbus over Brexit stance Airbus are engaging in 'sabre rattling' and appear to be in a 'state of confusion' over Brexit, according to Filton's MP. Jack Lopresti said claims by Filton-based Airbus, that they could be forced to leave the UK after Brexit, were 'empty threats'. A public meeting to discuss issues surrounding Filton Community Association will be held in August, Filtonvoice understands. Town councillors voted to hold the meeting amidst a complaint being made to the Charity Commission over the association's running of the facility at Elm Park.

Meanwhile,he town council has received a letter on behalf of the association trustees requesting the return of their accounts, which have been held since a dispute with administrator Oliver Newbury. Town councillor Alan Tink said: "We ought to hold a public meeting. We were asked by MP Jack Lopresti to sort this out."

Filton set to get 'event space' whatever outcome of Bristol uncertainty over arena

by Rebecca Day It’s a resounding “yes” from Filton residents following news that the Bristol arena could potentially move to the airfield. Cheswick Village residents, invited to comment on Facebook, are more apprehensive, saying that parking and traffic are already problematic in the area and that an arena would only worsen the congestion. Improved transport provisions and infrastructure

would need to be in place before an arena is built, residents say. The news comes after a review into the Bristol arena project revealed that it would cost £32m more than expected to build at Temple Quay – the Bristol city centre site originally earmarked for the venue. As Filtonvoice went to print, it was revealed Bristol mayor Marvin Rees was planning to take more time to consider the options.

Auditors KPMG noted in their ‘value for money assessment’ report that the Bristol arena, which would be entirely publicly funded, would be one of the most expensive in the UK. As an alternative option, Filton airfield developer, YTL, has put forward proposals to develop the Brabazon hangar into an arena – should Bristol mayor Rees decide he does not wish to proceed with Temple Quay.

The Filton arena would seat 16,000 and would cost an estimated £100m to build – it would be privately funded and owned by YTL, therefore not affecting the public purse. plans have been agreed and funding has been secured for the extension of the MetroBus route to include the airfield and a rail link from the airfield to Temple Meads. In a report to Filton Town Council, councillor Roger Hutchinson stated: “I will say that I would come down in favour of the [Brabazon] on balance. “As far as the Filton option is concerned there would be ample parking and our challenge would be to encourage people by the provision of good public transport at an affordable price to leave their cars at home or at park and ride sites. “This would have to be a real opportunity to move forward to the completion of the Henbury Loop from the currently planned Henbury Spur. “[It] would be helpful if public transport is to be commercial and sustainable and possibly run through areas that are not currently served by buses, but also the large events will take place on evenings and weekends avoiding our rush hours. “I am sure that whilst infrastructure would be a challenge for our local authorities and the developers, it is a challenge that could involve use of new transport options and technologies, and a good new station right beside the Brabazon Hangar serving the venue and the new development as well as Filton and surrounding areas, with a stop for Metrobus and local buses and other routes.” Northville ward councillor Mubashar Chaudhry said: “[I] hope this will invite infrastructure improvement, new jobs and business opportunities and improved rail network.” Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti has welcomed the idea of the move. He said: “Our area needs a major venue which will deliver much needed jobs and investment. “If this project is to go ahead, I expect to see significant amount of monies invested to improve local rail and other significant local transport infrastructure. “I have heard a lot of talk of money being available for the existing proposed sites. I’ll be working hard to see that money spent in our area to make the project work.”

Even if there was parking in the plans people would rather get free parking locally then pay for official parking. I would not support any plans for the arena being in the area for that reason.” Marcey Egan: “Parking and congestion a nightmare already. No direct bus to [get] there. At least if it's on Temple Island I have the choice of several buses to Temple Meads or jumping on the train.” Tracey Baillie: “The traffic is already horrific around here. Just imagine if there were thousands more vehicles on the roads. No!!! Temple Meads is far more suitable.” Rob Curwood: “I think the arena in Filton is an ideal location. There is plenty of land there to build car parks, and it is a less built up area for noise pollution. Filton has easy access to the M4 and M5. Also a local rail link will be built to serve it. Loads of stadiums are built on the outskirts of cities. I don't think the city centre could handle the traffic on big gig nights. It is nowhere near Cheswick to cause parking problems here and would create quality employment " Gary Williams: “I think the people of Bristol need to look a little more at the bigger picture and stop taking the 'Not in my Backyard' approach.”

Musician Byron awarded British Empire Medal LOCAL resident Byron Jones, commonly known as the Welsh Wizard, has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to his community. Byron, right, was nominated for the ward by his partner Terry, who tragically died before he could see the award be given. Born in Risca, South Wales, in 1949 Byron has been a professional musician for 55 years and has lived in Bristol for the last 27 years and previously owned an organs and pianos store on Whiteladies Road. He fondly remembers being interested in music from the age of three when he was able to reach to the keys of the piano. Within a year he was sitting and starting to play and showing great promise on the piano and then the organ. He played in a local church, and developed his style over the years. Whilst still at school, By-

ron played at the local chapel and then progressed to the working men’s clubs of Wales where an organ demonstrator gave Byron

his first job, three nights at a local rugby club where he was paid £3 a night. Since then, over the last 30 years, Byron has played for many Summer Season Spectacular shows, made countless radio broadcasts and made many television appearances in Great Britain and America, as well as producing his own recordings on CD and DVD. Byron has his own music society of loyal fans and friends from all over the world. Throughout his glittering career Byron has raised many thousands of pounds for a range of different charities and puts on regular concerts at Horfield Methodist Church in Eden Grove for the benefit of MacMillans. Byron has also played most of the major theatre pipe organs in Great Britain, namely Comptons, Christies and Wurlitzers including the famous Blackpool Tower Wurlitzer. He is a much-sought-

after concert performer, and travels all over the country, giving concerts on many of the loved and cherished Theatre Cinema Organs that have been preserved and held in affection. He also cannot resist the temptation to sample all kinds of church organs when he has the opportunity. There are hundreds of organ societies around the country today having guest organists in concert, and Byron is among the tops, being sought after for these events, even as far as Spain and Jersey. In recent years Byron has achieved an increasing international success, with many new friends in Canada, the USA and Holland who look forward to seeing him during his visits there. Never happier than when seated at the console of some of the world’s finest organs, Byron’s magic touch is appreciated all around the world.

Recyling up 14% after a year of new bin strategy Recycling has risen by 14 per cent in the first year since the introduction of a new Waste Strategy in Filton. Since weekly recycling collections began in June 2017, an extra 3,644 tonnes of recyclables have been collected across South Glos. Smaller black wheelie bins were rolled out over 12 weeks from January 2018, 3,350 tonnes less waste has been thrown away, a 16 per cent reduction. While some experienced some inevitable teething issues with changes to the service, the overwhelming majority of residents are now sorting their recyclables effectively and with a renewed focus on recycling more, putting less in their smaller black bins.

According to the council the changes deliver a less wasteful and more environmentallyfriendly service, maximising value for money for residents. A spokesman said: "We found that 52 per cent of the average households black bin rubbish could actually be recycled from home. Putting recycling in the black bin increases costs, affects our recycling rates, and wastes valuable resources. "We developed our Waste Strategy 2015-2020 to meet new financial and environmental; targets to increase our recycling rates, reduce the cost of collecting and disposing of landfill waste." The main changes in the new waste strategy were: • Collect all recycling every week

instead of every fortnight, to simplify collections and make the recycling service easier for residents to use • Reduce the number of containers by giving residents the option to use green boxes to sort their recycling instead of a combination of boxes and bags • Change the 240 litre black bins for non-recyclable waste to 140 litres to further encourage recycling and promote waste reduction • Provide discounted reusable nappy kits and bags for disposable nappy waste to help parents with children in nappies manage their waste If you are struggling to cope, visit www.southglos.gov.uk/ sortit or contact the council for help and advice.

The Jolly Fryer was opened by Stamatis Lomvardos in April 1986, and after owning the fish and chip shop on Filton Avenue for nearly 32 years, his sons Andreas and Spiros Lomvardos decided to move on in March. As previously reported in Filton Voice, although new owners had previously stepped in to take over, a spokesman for The Jolly Fryer confirmed that they had subsequently pulled out. However since then, Nick Lomvardos – who worked at the Jolly Fryer with his dad and brothers until 2010 when he bought the Bishopston Fish Bar – has confirmed he is back and ready to reopen the shop in his

In the eight years that he’s owned Bishopston Fish Bar, they have won 15 awards and have been named as one of the top 20 UK shops in the National Fish and Chip Shop of The Year competition. The news that the Jolly Fryer is to reopen as Ocean Catch was posted by Nick on the Filton News and Views Facebook page on Saturday, June 16. Since then, the post has received 180 likes and 70 comments from locals who have said “so pleased you’re coming back”, “we have missed you” and that they can’t wait to visit when the shop is back up and running. Speaking to Filton Voice about his decision to take the shop over, Nick said: “Dad died on May 27 last year, and it broke my heart more than anyone I think as he taught me everything

I couldn’t stand the thought of the shop being empty and closed up, and so I’m doing this for him. “My parents worked hard for that place and I want to see it open again. “Dad really was the Jolly Fryer and as we’ve lost him I wanted to move away from the Jolly Fryer name. Ocean Catch will not be doing what the Jolly

Fryer used to do, so there won’t be any kebabs on the menu, but like we do at Bishopston I want to give people quality, traditional fish and chips. It will be a small menu and at least 50% of products will be homemade such as fishcakes, beef burgers and tartare sauce. I am also going to add in some gluten-free options. “I’m also going to be spending a bit of money to do the place up,

and there will be a photo of my dad in there and a plaque in his memory as well. “My passion is fish and chips, and after 32 years I still enjoy doing it. For me the perfect fish and chips is all about the basics, and at Ocean Catch we’ll be following in the footsteps of what we do so well at Bishopston Fish Bar. That means changing the oil every Friday, peeling and chipping the spuds and making the batter fresh every day, and de-boning and cutting the fish on the day, too. “The day I left the Jolly Fryer it broke my heart, as over 24 years I made a lot of friends, and now I want to give the people of Filton the best fish and chips this side of town.” Nick plans to split his time working between the two shops, and is hoping to open Ocean Catch in September. He has confirmed that he will also be recruiting locally for staff nearer the time and has plans to do something special for customers on their first day, too – details to follow!

Joint diamond wedding for couples who met on honeymoon in 1958

by Keri Beckingham Jean and Brian Flynn have celebrated 60 years of marriage after first meeting as pen pals in 1955. Jean grew up in Filton and through St Andrew’s Methodist Church, she started writing to Brian who was serving his national service with the Gloucestershire Regiment in Kenya. Jean and Brian wrote to each other for 18 months before Brian travelled from his home in Cheltenham to visit her at her parent’s house in Filton for the first time, and love blossomed from there. After a nine-month courtship, Brian told Jean that they should go and choose an engagement ring. When the day of the

John, Shirley, Jean and Brian on honeymoon in Torquay proposal arrived, things didn’t entirely go to plan as Brian’s train arrived at Stapleton Road

station instead of Temple Meads, leaving Jean thinking that she had been stood up. As there was

no way for them to contact each other in those days, Jean went home and was comforted by her mum, but after getting a bus from the centre of town to Filton, Brian finally arrived and popped the question. The couple decided that they would settle together in Bristol, with Brian working for a small builder in Bedminster and Jean working at the Co-op’s offices. After six months, they got married at St Peter’s Church in Filton, before moving to a garden flat in Burlington Road in Redland. For their honeymoon, the newlyweds went to Torquay for a week, which Jean says was the place to go in those days. They stayed at The Devonshire Hotel,

Jean and Brian with John and Shirley on their joint 60th anniversary. Right, Jean and Brian’s wedding day where they met John and Shirley and Pat and Vic, two couples from London who were also on honeymoon. At the end of their holiday the couples swapped addresses and agreed to stay in touch. Jean and Brian had two daughters called Caroline and Jacqueline, who were born in 1964 and 1965, and the family moved to Mangotsfield. At the same time, John and Shirley also had two daughters, and they decided to go and live in America where John set up his own company. Over the years the couples used to write to each other and send Christmas cards, and John and Shirley also travelled back to visit Jean and Brian on several occasions. Jean and Brian lived in Mangotsfield for 43 years, and during this time Brian started doing exhibition work for RollsRoyce, where he travelled the world to countries like France and Germany. Jean had a varied career as a training manager for Tupperware (the first in Bristol and the second in the whole country), the first lady car salesman for Cathedral Cars on Hotwells Road, and she was also the governor of a beauty therapy college. Brian and Jean moved to their

current house in Emersons Green in 2004 and all three couples celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries together at the Queens Hotel in Cheltenham in 2008. Unfortunately, Brian was forced to retire after suffering a heart attack at the age of 60 and was diagnosed with dementia in 2012, and Vic passed away in 2013. Fast forward to today and in a joint diamond anniversary celebration, John and Shirley travelled back from America to have lunch at Jean and Brian’s house, with Jean cooking a starter of smoked salmon with raw beetroot, rocket and horseradish, French Poule Blanc with roasted new potatoes and vegetables for main, and a dessert of meringue roulade – all washed down with plenty of Champagne. Speaking about their diamond anniversary and their secret to a long marriage, Jean told The Voice: “On our actual anniversary we went to the Priory Hotel in Bath for dinner with our daughters and our grandsons. In the evening, we had 24 friends and colleagues over to the house to have bubbles and cake which was lovely. We also had a card from the Queen arrive on the day, which was a very special thing to receive.

n NEWS Members of Filton Youth Council addressed a recent meeting of the town council. Alex, Anisa and Duan, supported by Sarah Howard, told councillors that an Easter fun day raised £170 and that they had been learning about government and parliament as well as seeking ways to improve Filton. They said that next year the focus would be on the environment with a mission to 'Keep Filton Tidy'. They will also be hosting a summer fun day when they will be sharing ideas with other young people and also looking to add to their current membership of eight. Filton Golf Club plans new practice facility by Keri Beckingham Filton Golf Club has submitted a planning application to build a new nine-hole pitch and putt practice facility that would be “the first of its kind” in the UK. The planning application, which was submitted to Bristol City Council on 17 April under reference 18/02044/F, includes plans to build a three hole Par-3 golf course and a nine hole pitch and putt course with driving range, pitching area and putting green. According to the course architects (re)GOLF Design, the design of the putting green has been based on the world renowned “Himalayas” putting course at the famous St. Andrews golf course in Scotland, and it is

hoped the facility will be a place “where great fun and enjoyment will be had by all”. In addition, the plans for the golf club on Golf Course Lane also include the construction of a 1.6km long walking/cycling/ jogging track that could be used by members, as well as the general public. It is expected that the works would take up to three years to complete, and would require more than 150,000 metres cubed of materials. To supply this, it would potentially involve heavy goods vehicles making up to 27 trips to the site per day, over five and a half days a week. also submitted, which details that the golf club plans to provide an “ecologically sound low maintenance facility with planting of new trees and shrubs”, “potential for disabled persons to attend to learn golf and enjoy outdoor periods by way of the short course with full wheelchair accessibility”, “provision of foot golf - a new exciting and rapidly expanding fun way to exercise and enjoy a game with friends”, as well as “potential for archery in a safe environment.” At the time of writing two comments had been received from residents, which were both objections on the grounds of privacy and the potential risk of unexploded bombs being disturbed. Within the application, it states there is a medium risk that “unexploded high explosive bombs fell

unnoticed and unrecorded within the site boundary” of the golf club during World War Two, and there are several risk mitigations options available if the works go ahead. Commenting on behalf of Filton Golf Club, Managing Secretary Ian McMahon said: “A planning application has been submitted and hopefully, this will be approved. Lowest recorded road accident numbers There were significantly fewer accidents on South Gloucestershire’s roads in 2017 than the previous year, according to the latest data available. The figures are obtained from police accident reports which show the total casualty figure for 2017 was 447, which is a 22 per cent reduction on the 2016

figure of 571. This also highlights a historical low in the numbers since South Gloucestershire became a unitary authority in 1996. The total number of fatal casualties on the district’s roads was eight, serious casualties, 34, slight casualties, 405 which takes the total figure to 447.

Chess lessons have been paying off for pupils at Shield Road Primary. They took part in the annual schools tournament at the City Hall in Bristol .... and came first! The Year 5 class has been learning chess every Monday with chess teacher, Peter Saunders. Shield Road Primary came first out of 25 other school even though it was only the second year they entered. Last year he school came third. The four children who represented the school were Kyle M, Duan, Sanseta and Karen.

Cribbs expansion plans will create thousands of jobs for local people Recently, I asked the Prime Minister in Prime Minister's Questions if she would ensure that the new Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, James Brokenshire MP, would make a timely decision regarding the expansion of Cribbs Causeway. This expansion represents huge economic benefit to our region. Not only will it create 3,000 construction jobs, but also 3,750 permanent jobs and 150 new homes, as well as significant investment in local infrastructure. The Prime Minister informed the House that the Secretary of State is currently considering the inspectors report, and hopes to issue his decision on or before August 2. I will continue to keep a close eye on this, and eagerly await the decision when it is issued by the Secretary of State. The Prime Minister has also recently announced an increase in funding for the NHS. The NHS is to receive £20bn a year extra in real terms by 2023, which is approximately £600 million a week in cash terms, representing a 3.4% increase annually. This will lead to the NHS delivery improved services. Mrs May has said that in return we will hold NHS leaders to account, and insist that the NHS’s bureaucracy becomes more efficient so that this money reaches the front line of our nation’s health and social care. This will benefit the people of Filton and Bradley Stoke, as well as the whole nation. In recent weeks Parliament has become extremely busy with the European (Withdrawal) Bill continuing its passage through the House. It recently came back into the Commons, where I supported the government in voting against the Lords' amendments. The British people have made their views known and clear. 17.4 million people voted to leave the EU. The Government must deliver on Brexit and restore our country to a free, sovereign and selfgoverning nation. The owner of a Filton hair salon says the business is going from strength to strength as she celebrates their 3rd anniversary. Remembering Bill as new pond opened in Community Garden The Tea and Cakes event in the Community Garden was a fantastic success with £820 raised for St Peter's Hospice. It was a really busy day, the garden was buzzing with activity, the highlight being the opening of the new wildlife pond. As previously reported the pond was built in memory of the garden's inspirational founder Bill Moore who died recently following a long illness. It was fitting therefore that the ribbon to open the pond was cut by Bill's Mum, above left. It was very emotional ceremony, a few tears were shed, but the result is we now have a lasting tribute to Bill. The

The newly-trained volunteers for the Listening Ear Project outside St Peter's Church Filton

was awarded by Andrews Charitable Trust, and the money has been spent on training the volunteers, developing a Listening Room and on publicity. The Listening Ear Project is a free service and will be open from Monday to Friday, 11am to 1pm (12.30pm on a Friday), and will be based in the Community Coffee Shop at St Peterâ€™s Church, Filton. It is hoped that the project could be easily replicated in other communities. Ten volunteers have currently been trained and represent a cross section of the community. There is enough funding to train another 12 people by the end of the year. The support received by other local charities and businesses, supports the need for this provision. Students cook up a storm for final by Rebecca Day Judges had nothing but compliments for two Orchard School Bristol students who created some outstanding dishes at the Young Cook Awards final last month. Year 8s Kashvi Dhingra and Harry Caldwell made it through to the final round at the Square Food Foundation in south Bristol after impressing judges at the semi-finals in May. Kashvi made a main meal of coconut and spinach chicken curry with a chai pudding for dessert, while Harry cooked seafood paella for his main dish, followed by a citrus fruit pudding. The pair spent up to two hours preparing their dishes for the judging panel, which was made up of local professional chefs including Adrian Kirikmaa from St Monica’s Trust and Barny Haughton from the Square Food Foundation.

South Glos house prices up by 0.3 per cent by Joseph Hook Data reporter House prices in South Gloucestershire crept up by 0.3% in April, contributing to a 3.4% rise over the last 12 months. The latest data from the Office of National Statistics shows that the average property in the area sold for £267,397 - significantly higher than the UK average of £226,906. Across the South West, property prices have risen by 6.1% in the last year, to £255,207. The region outperformed the UK as whole, which saw the average property value increase by 3.9%. The data comes from the House Price Index, which the ONS compiles using house sale information from the Land Registry, and the equivalent bodies in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The average homeowner in South Gloucestershire will have

seen their property jump in value by around £79,000 in the last five years. The figures also showed that buyers who made their first step onto the property ladder in South Gloucestershire in April spent an average of £228,382 - around £67,000 more than it would have cost them five years ago. Big rise in depression across South Glos by Joseph Hookk Data Reporter South Gloucestershire has seen one of the highest rises in depression and anxiety in the country, according to a survey of patients registered with GPs. Figures from Public Health England show that one in every nine registered patients in the area, or 11%, was suffering with at least one of the mental health conditions. But the results show that South Gloucestershire had seen a 22.8% rise since 2015 - the 13thhighest in the country. The South West as a whole had a lower than average percentage of patients with anxiety or depression. Across the region, 13.1% of respondents in the survey reported one or both of the conditions, an increase of 11.4% on 2015. Stephen Buckley, from mental health charity Mind,

said: "As attitudes towards mental health improve and with it the understanding that help is available, we're going to see more and more people seek support. No matter where you live, it is important that everyone has access to quality mental health services, when they need them." Across England, 13.7% of GPs' patients reported living with depression or anxiety at the start of 2017. They were more common among women, with 14.7% saying they had at least one of the two conditions. For men, the rate was 12.7%. Nationally, figures varied significantly between areas. The highest rates of depression and anxiety were in Liverpool, where nearly one in five respondents noted the conditions - more than double the rate in West Berkshire. The results of the survey, conducted between January

and March last year, also showed significant differences according to the background of the respondent, with those from more deprived areas more likely to report anxiety or depression. Mr Buckley said that the reasons for regional variations were unclear. He added: "We do know that there are links between, for example, deprivation and mental wellbeing, so it may be that prevalence is genuinely higher in certain areas. On the other hand, more positively, it may be that in some places there is greater awareness that you can get some support from your GP. "Everyone experiences good days and bad days but if the feelings don't go away after a couple of weeks or keep returning, it could be a sign that you're experiencing a common mental health problem like depression or anxiety."

n NEWS by Joseph Hook Data Reporter Fewer children in South Gloucestershire starting at a new school in September have been accepted into their first choice. Newly-released figures from the Department for Education show that 87% of children around one in eight - beginning either primary or secondary education will be joining their preferred school, down from 89% last year. In Filton, Abbeywood Community School will be oversubscribed in 2018/19 for the third year running and both Filton Hill and Charborough Road Primaries are also 'full to capacity'. The data shows that of the 2,910 children who have applied to start Year 7 in one of the area's secondary schools, 83% will be joining their first choice. It is lower than the average rate across the South West, where 88% of children were accepted into their preferred secondary. Nationally, 82% were awarded a place at their top choice of secondary school. In South Gloucestershire, parents were allowed to provide up to three preferences for their children's secondary school, and 96% of children were accepted into one of these. Richard Watts of the Local Government Association said: "Since 2010, councils have created more than 800,000 extra new places, and more than 85% of these were in schools rated by Ofsted as good or outstanding. "This is a demonstrable record that they are doing everything they can to rise to the challenge of ensuring no child

Of those, 91% were accepted into their first choice, and 98% were accepted into one their three preferred options. Across the South West, 92% of children were accepted into their preferred primary school; slightly above the 91% average in England. For each of the last five years, fewer children in England have been accepted into their first-choice secondary schools, as the system feels the impact of a growth in the birth rate in the early 2000s. In primaries, the first-choice rate has increased each year. Mr Watts warned that as more secondary schools become academies and free schools, local authorities will lose the power to control school admissions. He said: "As we have previously warned, these figures show demand is reducing in primary schools but increasing in secondary schools. With nearly 70% of secondary schools now academies or free schools, the lack of any council power or influence over the expansion and admissions policies of academies and free schools is a real concern." "Councils must be given powers to force schools to expand if local agreement cannot be reached voluntarily where this is in the best interests of new and existing pupils. Most academies

will be keen to work with their local authorities, but in the minority of situations where this

isn't the case, appropriate powers are vital to ensure all children get a suitable place."

10k challenge raises cash for CLIC Sargent A member of staff from a Filton opticians took on the SimplyHealth Great Bristol 10k and raised £160 for CLIC Sargent. Store manager Maria Matuszak, from Specsavers on Church View completed the race on Sunday, May 13. Starting in the historic harbourside area, the route took her through iconic Bristol landmarks. “It was a challenge but extremely rewarding,” comments Maria. The cheers from the crowd and support from fellow runners spurred me on to keep going. Filton Library will be open under the Open Access scheme from 8am, beginning on July 4. The scheme, introduced last year, means the library ill be available for nearly 12 hours every day of the week, although not all hours are staffed. More than 3,600 people signed up to use South Gloucestershire libraries using Open Access technology, including in Filton, in the first six months since changes to the service were introduced last year. Open Access enables users to use the library during unstaffed hours through swipe card technology and provides access to books and other services through earlier opening and later closing times for up to seven days-a-week. In October 2017, with the council required to save £500,000, staffed hours were reduced. To help mitigate this, Open Access technology was rolled out across most of the

council’s libraries. In response, more than 3,600 had signed up to Open Access as of April, with an average of 215 members attending the short induction sessions each month. In Filton, a public protest was launched amidst fears that the library, in the Shield Retail Park, could close altogether. The library as been open with staff for 26 hours each week but the building is currently available from 8.30am-7.30pm seven days a week. The Open Access service has been monitoring usage and feedback from users and there are plans to extend earlymorning opening hours for Open Access users from July, when libraries will be open from 8am. There is also a social side and to help their proceedings along there is virtually an unlimited supply of tea coffee and biscuits.
