Cafe chain set to open branch in Cheswick Village Boston Tea Party is set to open in Cheswick this autumn, bringing with it 30 new jobs. It will be the cafe chain’s sixth venue in Bristol, and will be situated in the residential area of Cheswick Village – a stone’s throw from UWE and the MOD. Work began on the site last month, and it is expected the cafe will seat around 120 customers, plus 30 outside. BTP has now begun recruiting
for new team members, and is calling on those who are interested in joining to visit the careers page on their website. The owners of a missing cat are pleased to inform Filtonvoice readers that Howie has now been found. As reported last month, the seven-year-old bluepoint Siamese cat, who went missing from his home in Sixth Avenue on May 21, was discovered under the bushes of a house in the next street. News by Rebecca Day The shutters are now permanently down for My Local in Gloucester Road North, after the convenience chain went into administration last month. It is one of 93 stores to be closed across the country, with 32 remaining open to continue trade until a buyer is found. A sign now reads on the door of the Filton store: ‘This branch is now closed. The management and staff of My Local thank you for your custom’. The appointed administrator KPMG has confirmed that there has been a “significant number” of redundancies. There are 1,658 people employed by My Local across the UK. However, it is not yet known how many employees at the Filton store have lost their job. Morrisons has confirmed that it will welcome back former employees if a buyer is not found. My Local acquired 120

£4,500 grants available for central heating Filton residents who have no central heating, or who are heating 50% of their home with storage heaters, have the opportunity to receive grant funding of up to £4,500 to install a central heating system. The Central Heating Fund grants are available to all residents in South Gloucestershire who own or privately rent their homes, and who meet certain criteria. Eligibility is based on income from earnings or benefits, housing costs and fuel bills. People may also qualify if they have a cold related health condition and their property isn’t energy efficient. Warm and Well, part of
the Gloucester-based charity Severn Wye Energy Agency, is administering the grants in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council. Jon Clarke, Senior Project Manager from Warm & Well, said: “Being cold and not being able to pay your bills can lead to ill health, debt and lots of stress. “This scheme is here to help people get out of fuel poverty”. Filton views on EU debate which split the country
By Rebecca Day The EU Referendum outcome has sent shockwaves through local communities, with some people celebrating and others angry over the ‘leave’ result. South Gloucestershire was one of the 270 counties across the UK to vote in line with the majority, with 52.68% (83,405) of its constituents wanting to leave the European Union. The turnout was 76.2%. The result closely mirrors that of the UK’s overall voting statistics, which saw a 71.6% turnout and 52% voting for Brexit. It is unknown how Filton voted due to the system South Glos Council used to count the ballot papers. Filtonvoice spoke to some local people:
“I thought it was mad that we voted to leave – I honestly thought we were going to stay. I feel angry that we voted out.” - Mikey Buchan, Filton. “I’m pleased that we voted out, because of my Christian views and because I want us to be independent, so our laws can’t be overturned by the EU.” - Ron Hawkins, Filton. “I moved from Spain to the UK eight years ago, and now I teach Spanish in a secondary school and have a baby. If the UK wasn’t in the EU, I would never have come here to live because of the trouble of having to apply for a visa. I think the UK has made a big mistake. I now feel like I’m not wanted, and many

other Spanish people I know feel the same way. I’m also worried about my child’s future.” - Neolia Gallego, Cheswick Village. “I’m very upset personally. I don’t feel like enough young people voted, and too many older people voted ‘leave’ without young people in mind. I’m worried about the next few years.” – Anthony Elliott, Horfield. A spokesperson for Filtonbased Airbus Group said: “We respect the decision taken by the British people, which should be seen as a wake-up call for Europe and as a catalyst for change. “While we are disappointed, clearly we will continue to support our workforce and operate our UK facilities. We will study the longer term consequences of this decision on the competitive environment.” Previously, it was reported that the firm’s bosses had written to all 15,000 employees in the

Filton Chest and Heart Charity celebrated its 70th anniversary with a celebration lunch at the BAWA Club in Filton. Members and supporters were joined by President Professor Nick Maskell and former President Dr John Harvey, both respiratory consultants, for the occasion. The charity, which celebrates being ‘in the community for the community’ raises money to buy medical equipment for the benefit of patients at Filton’s GP surgeries, & also for the Respiratory & Cardiology Departments in Southmead Hospital. Over the years the members have raised tens of thousands of pounds. Chairman Brian Smith said: “My thanks to everyone concerned, especially Betty and Alex Clark and their staff at BAWA, for laying on a superb meal which helped to make the day such a special occasion.”

Park Run unlikely in Filton after council rejects feasibility study
Filton councillors have effectively ditched any possibility of holding a regular Park Run at Elm Park. Park Run volunteer ambassador Geoff Keogh addressed the full council meeting after Cllr Adam Monk put forward a motion asking town clerk Lesley Reuben to investigate the feasibility of Filton hosting the popular weekly event. Park Run is a volunteer-led 5k run at locations across the UK every Saturday morning at 9am. Mr Keogh said he understood concerns about damage to the Elm Park field and parking issues but that Park Run tries to be a ‘good neighbour’. He said he had looked at Elm PArk and was proposing a 5k run across the top of the field on the grass area, down the side and
looping back between the football fields. Mr Keogh said the run would not affect other uses of the field and that in most cases all runners would be gone by 9.45am. He said that Park Run participants try to ‘leave each site as they find it’ and that in their experience the runs do not cause serious damage to grass areas. Ground staff at Elm PArk, he said, had expressed the view that

Hair today, gone tomorrow as Lily donates her locks
Police urge pair to get in touch after store robberies
By Becky Day For many, birthdays are all about receiving. But for young Lily Haynes, it was about giving something special on her 10th birthday – 14 inches of her long golden hair to charity. She has also raised almost £800 for Cancer Research UK for undergoing the act of kindness. Lily’s locks – which were cut at Perfected hair salon in Gloucester Road North – have now been sent to the Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs to children undergoing cancer treatment.
The Shield Road Primary pupil has been growing her hair since she was five years old. Mum Sophie Haynes said: “Lily’s school has raised quite a bit of money over the years for Cancer Research, and Lily felt that she wanted to do something for the charity, so she decided that she would chop off her hair. “She had 14 inches cut off in total – it was down to her bottom! “When she looked in the mirror after she’d had it cut, I was worried she was going to cry, but she absolutely loved it – she was really happy.
“I’d like to thank Perfected for doing such a great job, and for giving Lily a discount on her haircut, and also to everyone who has donated so far.” Filton has shown much support towards Lily’s fundraising efforts, with large donations coming from local sports clubs St Vallier AFC and Epic Martial Arts, where Lily has trained since she was six. Police are appealing for a man and a woman to contact them after an incident at Sainsbury’s in Filton. The robbery in Filton was followed by another incident in Bradley Stoke. The first incident happened on May 5 when a woman entered Sainsburys in Filton at about 6.55pm and took a quantity of alcohol and left the store without paying. Two days later the same woman entered Tesco in Bradley Stoke and again selected alcohol which she failed to pay for as she left the store. A member of staff challenged her as she was leaving the store and a man who was with her assaulted the store assistant. Police have issued images of two people who were in the store at the time of the incident who may have useful information to help our enquiries. A new beginning for homes site Customers of new affordable homes have cut the red ribbon to celebrate the official opening of their new homes, on the site of the former Newleaze House. Local housing association Merlin has invested £2m to redevelop its former older people’s housing scheme in Roycroft Road, Filton into 16 modern, affordable homes. The housing association invited customers, stakeholders and staff to a tea party to mark the completion of the development. The development is a mix of two and three bedroom houses and one and two-bedroom flats, all with good links to local shops, schools and leisure facilities. Development Officer Shane Smith said: “It was great to see so many of the customers at the event and hear how well they are getting on in their new homes. “There are so many people in need of affordable housing
in the area and as a housing association we’re committed to building as many new homes as we can to tackle this issue. These homes, and the 270 we’re

Fun day in store for visitors to community garden fete Filton Community Garden will again be holding a summer fete. The committee has organised a fun packed day, to include Punch and Judy, a plant sale, cakes, games and much more. The fete is run on the same day as the Filton Festival - Sunday, July 24, noon-4pm - offering a great day out for Filton residents. One of the highlights is the ‘garden on a plate’ competition in which younger residents are invited to create their own horticultural vision - but on a plate no more than 12 inches in diameter! Entries must be handed in at the Filton Community Garden on 24 July before 1pm (same day as Filton Festival). Prizes and certificates will be awarded in the garden at 2pm on the day. There are categories for 7 to 11 year olds and under 7s, with fantastic prizes including book tokens on offer.

Royle Family star Ricky announces ‘an audience with’ night in Filton Actor Ricky Tomlinson - star of TV’s The Royle Family and big screen hit Mike Bassett: England Manager ,is coming to Filton for ‘an audience with’ evening at the BAWA club in October. Fans can grab the chance to get early bird tickets from BAWA Reception at £39 instead of the usual £65. The ticket price includes a top quality buffet and several interactive sections during the evening, all hosted by Andy Ashworth, one of the country’s top comperes. Ricky and Gary will be available for photos with guests. As an actor Ricky Tomlinson appeared as Bobby Grant in the Channel 4’s first soap opera Brookside from 1982 to 1988, followed by DCI Charlie Wise in
Cracker and as Jim Royle in the sitcom The Royle Family. In 2002, Tomlinson starred in the BBC Series Nice Guy Eddie playing a Liverpool private investigator. Using down-toearth cases - actually based upon real-life ones from Liverpool private investigator Tony Smith - the show also starred Tom Ellis and John Henshaw. Tomlinson featured heavily in series two of Paul Abbott’s series Clocking Off, in a BAFTAnominated episode written by Danny Brocklehurst. Tomlinson has also starred in several films, notably Mike Bassett: England Manager, Raining Stones and Hillsborough, a made-for-TV film about the families of the victims of the Hillsborough
Stadium disaster, in which he portrayed John Glover - the father of victim Ian. Tomlinson himself is a lifelong fan of Liverpool Football Club. Tomlinson has fronted a series of television adverts for British Gas. In January 2010 he began to appear in a series of advertisements for the frozen food chain Farmfoods. In 2003, he published an autobiography, entitled Ricky, which spent five weeks at the top of the UK best-selling new books chart. In the book, Tomlinson described in detail his time in prison. Tomlinson is also a keen banjo and harpsichord player, and has played the instruments in many episodes of The Royle Family. In 2006 Tomlinson
made his début as the guest celebrity in Dictionary Corner on the long-running UK Channel 4 game show Countdown. In 2006, Tomlinson toured at theatres across the UK with his show An Evening with Ricky Tomlinson where he was interviewed about his life by Elton Welsby. In December 2006 he presented a programme in Five’s Disappearing Britain series entitled When Coal was King. In March 2007, Tomlinson presented a BBC programme detailing his version of the Shrewsbury Two case, in which he compared his political activism as a trade unionist to the work of the suffragettes. In May 2010 Tomlinson opened his own cabaret club, the Green Room, in Liverpool.

News By Rebecca Day When a Filton resident fell seriously ill, an air ambulance service was quick to the rescue. The Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) landed within minutes of being called to the Shellard Road end of Elm Park, where local resident Anthony Mannings transported the medical team to the patient’s address in Filton Avenue. The helicopter soon attracted a large crowd to the area, and pilot Nicky Smith was on hand to answer questions and show onlookers around the craft. WAA supports the Great Western Air Ambulance when it is required elsewhere and can deliver specialist treatment to Filton within 10 minutes. The service relies heavily on public donations. The patient was reportedly transported by road to hospital after being stabilised at the scene. l People who owe their lives to the Great Western Air Ambulance helped the charity celebrate its 8th birthday last month. Filton-based GWAAC was formed in 2008 following a demand for an air ambulance to serve Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire. The first emergency call came in on June 3 in that year, when the crew were called to a road traffic collision on the M5, at junction 21 for Westonsuper-Mare. Since then the dedicated critical care paramedics and doctors have attended 15,642 jobs, by helicopter and car. To help the crew celebrate the anniversary ex-patients Peter Whitbread and Gary Daw visited the base. Gary was rescued by GWAAC in 2010 after passing out while paragliding 100ft above Selsley Common in Cirencester. He was treated at the scene by the critical care team, before being airlifted to hospital. GWAAC chief executive John Christensen said: “I want to thank every single person who has donated or volunteered for Great Western Air Ambulance Charity as none of this would have been possible without you. “I know that the people we have saved are eternally grateful. It is important that people know we need to raise £2.3million every year to stay operational. “Thank you all for your unwavering support.”

Following the successful visit of French and German friends to Filton last year, this month Filton Twinnig Association we will be heading to Witzenhausen in central Germany. Around 40 people will be heading there by coach or car, including 8 youngsters and their 3 youth workers from FACE youth group. Whilst there they will also be visiting Goslar and taking part in Witzenhausen’s annual Cherry Festival. Last year, one of the member families had a Japanese lady staying with them at the time of the Twinning visit and she enjoyed it so much that she is specially flying from Japan to Germany to take part in this year’s events. FACE members prepared for the trip by practising putting up their tents on the Elm Park field. Youth group who are going on the trip raised over £700 from a table top sale and a sponsored run, and Filton Town Council gave them a grant of £750. They are each paying £200 and then the German twinning group are contributing 500€ towards the camping costs. Without their efforts and support, the cost would have been around £400 each. The young people have to pay for camping, food and ‘entertainment’ costs whereas the other twinning members tay with families so get all their board and meals included. FACE leader Debbie Teml said: “We love it and it’s great opportunity for the young people to experience another culture and gain great independence and life skills.”

Focus... South Glos Show
Be king of the (sand)castle If you are always itching to trample on sandcastles on the beach, the South Glos Show is the place to be in early August. The show is hosting the installation of a 20 tonne sand sculpture within its Kids Zone. The sculpture will be built by artists from the Weston Sand Sculpture Festival with the design itself to be decided through a social media competition. The show is hoping to make some money for Meningitis Now, its nominated charity, by holding a ‘Demolition Raffle’ over the event on 6 and 7 August. The winner of the raffle will get the opportunity to destroy the sculpture at the end of the weekend.

Taste of the British countryside Organisers of the South Glos show are to add a country fair
to the list of this year’s activities, with heavy horses and a live sheep show being brought to the event in Henfield. The sheep show will allow visitors to get a closer look at at the animals, with trained gun dogs also performing a display. Visitor’s dogs will also be able to have ago at the dog’s ‘scurry’ event. The fair will also display heavy horses, a farrier, falconry and shooting. The South Gloucestershire Show is on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August.

AIrbus engineer named among Top 5o Women in Engineering A Filton-based Airbus engineer has been named one of the Top 50 Women in Engineering in a list published on National Women in Engineering day last month. Jacqueline Castle, main picture, is currently the wing Chief Engineer for the new Airbus A330neo and she will shortly be moving to a new role as head of A350 Landing Gear. She joins other leading women in engineering on the list, including Dame Ann Dowling, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Naomi Climer, President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and Chi Onwurah MP – the only female engineer in the UK Parliament. The list, compiled in collaboration with the Women’s Engineering Society and The Daily Telegraph, features the UK’s top influential female engineers chosen from almost 900 nominations. Jacqueline said: “The message I want to give to girls who’d like to pursue careers in engineering but think it may be male dominated is simply this - go for it! I’ve never encountered any career obstacles or challenges because of my gender. “It’s down to the individual to
drive their own career and push themselves to make the most of their abilities. “At school, I enjoyed practical subjects but I never figured I’d end up working with aircraft. It’s certainly an exciting product!” Jacqueline did a mechanical engineering degree at the University of the West of England and joined British Aerospace as a Direct Entry Graduate in 1996. Since then she
has had various roles, mainly within Wing Structures Design. The Women’s Engineering Society (WES) today also announced another Filton Airbus engineer Emma England, right, to their inaugural Young Members’ Board (YMB). The WES YMB will consist of twelve women under the age of 30 who are working, training or studying in an engineering field. Emma is a Loads and Aeroelastics
Engineer, joined the Airbus graduate scheme in 2013 and was awarded Best of British Engineering at the Semta Skills Awards earlier this year.

South Glos backs devolution deal
South Gloucestershire Council has chosen to put forward the proposed £1 billion West of England devolution deal, following a decision by the full Council. Councillors considered all aspects of the complex deal and agreed to put it forward for wider public consultation, which will run until August 15. And finally it will come back to the Council who will have the final decision. The decision means that Filton residents will have the opportunity to have their say on the scheme and the Government’s proposal for a West of England Combined Authority Mayor. Cllr Matthew Riddle, Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “The deal will unlock £1 billion of investment for the West of England.”

A Month in the Country, by JL Carr

A Month in the Country is a short book, one you can read in an afternoon, but this deceptively simple story seems to contain far more than could possibly fit between its covers. Set in 1920, it tells the story of Tom Birkin, a damaged survivor of the First World War, who has been hired to uncover a whitewashed-over fourteenthcentury painting on the wall of a church in Oxgodby, a remote Yorkshire village. The tale is told from Tom’s perspective as he looks back over his life at the month he spent there and the people he met. Not quite nostalgic, not quite bittersweet, every page is filled with a kind of wonder and longing. The book follows Tom’s painstaking attempts to reveal the picture on the wall, and
his struggle trying to adjust to a life and a future he never thought he would have the chance to experience. It is a book about place, almost a hymn to the English countryside. It is a funny book. It is a book about loss, and memory. It is a book about love, and the chances we miss because we do not recognise we have them. It is a book about simple things, like noticing the mortar between bricks and the way someone smiles, and complex things, like restoring a medieval painting. It is a book about memory, the way people remember as well as the things we
remember. But most of all, it is a book primarily about the sheer unadulterated pleasure of being alive. A copy is available at Filton Library, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Strawberries and tea for charity
Staff at Asda Filton joined the local Filton community for a ‘Strawberry Tea Party’ in support of a new charity campaign to raise money for Breast Cancer Care. Community champion Anne Maddox, pictured, had tea and cake with a group of senior citizens at Chew Valley Lake as for the first time the national supermarket chain joined Breast Cancer Care’s annual summer fundraiser, Strawberry Tea. Launched in 1998, Breast Cancer Care’s Strawberry Tea encourages friends, colleagues and families to hold a #StrawberryTea event in their homes, work or community to raise awareness and funds for the charity. From 4th – 18th June each of the participating Asda stores hosted StrawberryTea stall with activities for customers to get involved, including cupcake decorating and a teapot lucky dip.
There was also background about the charity and the much needed services it provides. All money raised will help Breast Cancer Care provide
support for women, men, family and friends affected by breast cancer. Anne said: “We are delighted to support Breast Cancer Care’s

News Students from 5 local schools came together to compete in the Olympus Academy Trust (OAT) Community Challenge. Students from Abbeywood and Bradley Stoke Community School, Charborough Road and Meadowbrook Primaries and Patchway Community College met to plan a fundraising event to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW). In the morning students enjoyed input from finance and marketing professionals, alongside an introduction to the work of the charity Charlton House from the Children’s Hospice South West. Hosts Edge Church kindly donated £100 to each team to kick-start their fundraising idea and teams then spent the next few hours planning their fundraising activity ready to pitch their idea back to a panel of experts later in the day. The winning pitch involved a combination of events including a non-uniform day, a student visit to Charlton House to make a video montage publicising the work of CHSW and a ‘waterrun’ event where students and staff can either pay to aim water bombs at runners, or run themselves. Beth Owen, OAT Community Lead, said: “Our most able students thrive on the opportunity to apply their knowledge and expertise in real-life situations and learnt so much today about planning and research, creativity, problem solving, communication and presentation skills.” Dave Baker, CEO, Olympus Academy Trust said: “The quality of pitches was hugely

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is a lifeline to families who need it, offering care and support during most difficult times. In addition to emergency and end-of-life care, families use CHSW for much needed respite care. CHSW operates three hospices; Charlton Farm near Bristol, Little Bridge House in North Devon and Little Harbour in Cornwall. The care offered at each of its hospices is not simply about medical and nursing care for sick children, but about enriching the lives of children and their families and making the most of short and precious lives. CHSW also provides bereavement support to families after the death of a child for however long the family needs it.

Shield Road Primary Fete - picture special A bumper turn out and glorious sunshine marked another successful Shield Road School Fete on Saturday 2nd July. Despite some heavy midmorning showers during set up, by the time the doors opened at noon crowds of people were able to enjoy a wonderful traditional event with a couple of new features. New this year was a Carnival theme that saw the younger children from the school parade from the school hall to the main arena sporting carnival headdresses they had created on the run up to the event. There were sweets for all participants and a little something extra for those judged to be the top three. It was a very colourful spectacle indeed! In addition the usual traditional game stalls, such as beat the goalie and Ball in the Bog sat alongside an eclectic mix of local traders selling crafts, preserves, jewellery and beautiful bespoke baby cloths. Shield Road events seem to be getting a reputation for the range of amazing home baked goods on sale. One lady said: “I live locally and always pop in to pick up cakes for the weekend when the school runs an event. The quality and variety is amazing and they are very reasonably priced” The four hour event whizzed by and culminated with the traditional “Gunge Tank” This was originally a Shield Road first and this year’s “lucky” recipient was popular school governor and long serving FOSR member Dan Webb who ironically built the gunge tank quite some years ago! Being the sport he is, he stepped up to have many litres of BBC patent neon nastiness dumped on his head while cheered on by a large crowd. It would have been rude not to “spread the love” and Dan did so by chasing the children round the arena to the laughter of those watching. Chairperson of Friends of Shield Road (FOSR) Louise Davies said: “Today has been fantastic and worth all the work put in over many months by our small team of volunteers. We would like to thank our long list of sponsors who underwrote stalls and provided raffle prizes and donations. “In particular Ocean helped

Shed men say thanks for Friends’ gift I wonder in your ‘readers letters’ section you would print a sincere thank you from the Men in Sheds Filton group to the Friends of Conygre House, see opposite page. Their unexpected and very generous donation will certainly help the ‘Shed’ to maintain its current popularity, and fulfil the function of providing an activity based social group for men (or women) of over 50yrs. Retirement home residents call for crossings on ‘dangerous’ route by Rebecca Day Elderly residents from Concorde Lodge say that more adequate crossings are needed at Filton Roundabout. Many from the retirement flats on Southmead Road say they are either risking their lives to dart across the junction, or having to walk at least 100 yards for a safe crossing – all in order to reach the shops located diagonally opposite the village. The only safe crossing available at the roundabout is at Link Road, by the Filton Community Garden. Sheila Pope, 78, a resident at Concorde Lodge, said: “I’m still quite agile, so I risk crossing the road near the roundabout using the islands – there’s no way I’m walking up and down hills with bags of shopping. But for older residents it’s not as easy. “I’ve seen some residents in
their 80s and 90s having to walk all the way down to Springfields, or down to Golf Course Lane, and all the way back up again, with their walking frames and sticks. “It’s extremely difficult for them – we need better crossings.” Another resident living at Concorde Lodge, who prefers to remain anonymous, said: “Having to walk all the way to a safe crossing is a lot of effort. I find it hard, and I’m quite fit.
“I’ve also seen a lot of people trying to cross at the roundabout, but it’s so dangerous.” They added: “It also doesn’t help that they are planning to make Gloucester Road North wider to improve traffic flow. While I fully understand why the council is doing this, it’s going to make crossing even more difficult. “I’ve asked the council many times to do something about the roundabout, but they always
tell me that nothing can be done.” Filton councillor Roger Hutchinson said: “This has been looked into extensively by me with officers, and I am currently arranging to visit the residents with an officer to discuss the issue again.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “We are currently working on a scheme to improve traffic flow and increase capacity at the Filton roundabout by extending the three-lane westbound approach and widening the carriageway. “We are aware of residents’ concerns regarding the difficulties crossing at this location, and our transport engineers will be attending a meeting with a Filton councillor and local residents to discuss and consider these concerns.”

More than £4,700 was donated to local good causes by the Friends of Conygre House after the historic building was sold to developers. Chair Keith Briffett invited representatives of local groups to a special cheque presentation evening at Elm Park. Money was raised at various events over the years by the group and went to: Southern Brooks (£1,000); Men in Sheds, SHE7, Filton Chest and Heart, Filton Scouts and Filton Guides/ Rainbows (£700 each); and St Peter’s cafe (£117). The house has been sold now to developers who are planning to create flats but have promised to preserve the exterior of the building. It is possible three further homes could be built in the grounds in the future. Mr Briffett said his group believed this was the best outcome for the historic building at the bottom of Conygre Road after other projects had fallen through over the years.

Law firm partners with secondary Law firm Irwin Mitchell has won an award for helping students in a local school prepare for life after they leave school. The firm won the Ablaze award for Outstanding Business Contribution to a School, after taking part in a yearlong project which saw five solicitors run mentoring sessions to help students at Orchard School prepare for the future. Along with students from the school, personal injury solicitor Eleri Davies, based in Irwin Mitchell’s Bristol office, was at the Ablaze ceremony held at the M Shed museum to receive the award, which was given out by Mary Prior, the Lord Lieutenant, on Tuesday 21 June. Eleri said: “The students responded really well to us and all of the mentors would like to wish them all the very best for their futures.” The awards were held by the Bristol based charity to help celebrate the work they do with local businesses and volunteers to raise aspiration and improve skill levels of thousands of young people in the region by delivering support in schools. The five-strong team from Irwin Mitchell ran six sessions over the academic year to offer support and advice to a group of 16 girls at the school in Horfield, by partnering with local charity Ablaze. The sessions focussed on various employability skills including CV writing, mock interviews and telephone skills. The mentors also shared their own personal experiences of obtaining work experience, applying for jobs and choosing their own career paths. Georgina Ife, Personal Injury solicitor based in Irwin Mitchell Bristol, who co-ordinated the programme with Ablaze, said: “This is the third year that Irwin Mitchell has been involved with Ablaze projects in Bristol. It is a wonderful charity to be involved with and it was a real honour to be able to help nurture and offer advice to our group of students from Orchard School. “All of the students responded to us really well and were a delight to work with. It was fantastic to see them so engaged in the sessions and we have
high hopes for them all going forwards.” Work Experience and Post 16 Coordinator at Orchard School, Hayley Galpin said: “The students have benefited hugely from this experience. The Irwin Mitchell solicitors were fantastic at making the girls feel at ease through sharing their own personal experiences and showing the girls that the sky is the limit. This has raised both their aspirations and self-belief that anything is possible for them. “The girls went above and beyond to support our students and they really understood and embraced the diversity of students we have within our school community. As a school we are excited and looking forward to working with Irwin Mitchell again in the future.' Amanda Cranston, Secondary Schools Partnership Manager at Ablaze, said “Not only did the mentoring provide the students with a better idea of the employability skills they will need it also demonstrably increased their confidence and encouraged them to engage with a wide range of aspirations and educational and life-style possibilities for the future. “The Ablaze programmes are valued in schools across Bristol.”

Charborough Road Fete - picture special Due to a forecast of intermittent heavy showers, the fun moved indoors for the Charborough Road School Summer Fete on Saturday 25th June, but the sun came out in time to see Dave Baker, CEO of the Olympus Academy Trust, get covered head to toe in baked beans! Children (and, we suspect, some teachers and parents) had been voting all week to decide which member of staff would earn the privilege this year. Mrs Hannam and Ms. Kennedy courageously volunteered but it was Mr Baker, sporting his trademark bow tie, who was to fall victim to the two buckets full of beans. “The best bit was definitely when Mr Baker got covered in beans. He pretended to eat them as they were pouring down his face. And he picked up a handful of beans and threw them at our Chair of Governors!” said Ace Reynolds, Year 1 pupil. The afternoon was punctuated with the sound of a variety of sirens, courtesy of the local PCSOs. Many of the children took the opportunity to sit in the front seat of their police car and try out all the buttons! Children also enjoyed perennial favourites Hook a Duck, Beat the Goalie and the Coconut Shy amongst others and there was a selection of homemade cakes to rival The Great British Bake Off. The Bidding Wall opened in advance this year on Facebook and continued on the day taking silent bids on a range of prizes including family passes to Cardiff Castle, @Bristol and Avon Valley Railway raising more than £800 for the school. “I very much liked that everyone was happy, the food was nice and I got seriously soaked on the wet sponge game...it was fun,” said Maddie Hammond, a Year 5 pupil. A parent to Lily in Year 3, Polly Kirby, said: “A fun family day out, smiles, giggling, candy floss galore. Aiden was very excited by sitting in the police car. ” In addition to having so much fun, the school managed to raise an incredible £4,600! We are actively seeking to recruit altos, tenors (gents or ladies) and basses to join our happy band. We sing four part harmony but ability to read music, although useful, is not essential as we supply CDs and MP3 files as teaching aids. We give afternoon concerts to elderly people’s clubs and societies around Bristol and two evening concerts in June and December from which we donate much of our profit to charities. We are a very caring and sociable group of people who sing together with the aim of giving as good a performance as we can, but mainly to enjoy ourselves. Men in Sheds in Filton is extending its hours to meet demand.
The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea. Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. There are now over 200 “sheds” across the country, with many more being developed. The group runs every Wednesday, from 9.30am12.30pm. Horfield Townswomens Guild are a really friendly Guild that meet on the second Wednesday of every month at St. Gregory the Great Church Hall, Filton Road, Horfield at 2.30 pm. New Harmony Ladies’ Choir Bristol …. an established choir since 1994 who offers a chance for ladies to get together and have a good old……sing! We perform several concerts a year and sometimes travel to other parts of the country to sing with other choirs.
