News There’s a new FACE in Filton – charity to hold official launch A new charity will be officially launched in Filton this month to build on the work of the St Andrew’s Methodist Youth Centre and provide a range of activities and support for residents of all ages. FACE, which stands for Foundation for Active Community Engagement, won charity status in May this year and residents are invited to a celebration barbecue on July 19 to hear more about what the group has planned. St Andrew’s Methodist Youth Centre leader Debbie Teml is at the helm of the new charity's work, returning to a full-time post after council funding cuts saw the role she had held since 2008 reduced to part-time last year. She said: “When the management committee heard about the local authority cuts coming in 2012/13, they started to think differently and wanted to ensure that the work was sustained and also could develop and grow. “As the work was beginning to shift its focus, the committee began to think about youth and community work. Registration as a charity seemed the only way to embed the work and give the centre more chance to grow and gain wider funds.” Currently the centre provides various youth clubs for age 9+, youth volunteering schemes and mentoring, as well as Duke of Edinburgh Awards for young
FACE offers the Duke of Edinburgh Award for young people aged 14 and above and Silver Surfers for older members of the community people aged 14 and above. There is also an alternative education programme offered to local schools for those students who
are struggling to engage. For older members of the community, the centre also hosts Silver Surfers on Thursday

mornings, to teach IT skills and provide the chance to socialise. The charity’s management team is already planning new services, including support groups for adults, family activities and “preparation for work” courses for people on the autistic spectrum aged over 19, which will start in September. As an independent organisation FACE is now renting its premises from St Andrew's Church, which continues to support its work. Debbie added: “Volunteers have come from across the area to support the work that goes on, and without a dedicated team of volunteers and management committee who dedicate so much time, the centre wouldn’t be where it is today. “We’re still looking for more people to get involved ‘behind the scenes’ with volunteering, fundraising, charity development, and other kinds of support so please get in touch if you’d like to know more or can help in any way.” All are welcome to FACE’s barbecue and activity day on Saturday, July 19, from noon3pm at St Andrew’s Methodist Youth Centre, in Elm Park. People can also find out more at www.facefilton.org.uk.

Playgroup site may be set for council sell-off
By Rebecca Day A Filton councillor has expressed concern that a playgroup might have to be relocated in the near future – but there is a possibility that it could remain on site. The building on Charborough Road, the base for Filton Park Pre-school Playgroup, is part of the land which is set for disposal by South Gloucestershire Council. A pupil referral unit (PRU) also occupies another building on the site, whereas the other properties – previously occupied by an education unit and training centre – remain vacant. Other locations are being looked at for housing the PRU, including a site in Downend. A review of the site, conducted 811_A5L_EDGE_Refurb_234099.ai 1 08/03/2012 15:36 by Children and Young People Councillor Adam Monk (CYP), is to be published in says he has secured a verbal September. commitment from the council If the Downend site meets the that – once the site has been requirements, the buildings on cleared – the primary school Charborough Road could be fully on Charborough Road will be vacant by September 2016. given some of the land to create a However, until the PRU has playing field. been relocated, the site cannot He said that the playgroup – 811_A5L_EDGE_Refurb_234099.ai 1 08/03/2012 15:36 be sold. which is next door to the school –

once the future of the site is more certain. Cllr Monk said: “The playgroup on Charborough Road is very popular. “It’s the only playgroup available for families in Charborough ward, so this could pose an issue further down the line. However, no more can be done until the first issue is resolved.” The remainder of the site will be sold to the highest bidder for development. Playgroup chairperson Sarah Williams said: “Our Playgroup has served the residents of Filton for many years and we’ve seen generations of families prepare for school with us. Our current location is ideal - providing a safe setting for the children and convenient for parents and carers.”

Filton residents’ views wanted on local transport
Filton residents are being asked for their views on local highway and transport services as part of a major national survey. The National Highways and Transport (NHT) public satisfaction survey is conducted by independent researchers Ipsos MORI on behalf of 78 local authorities, including South Gloucestershire, helping them to share best practice and improve local services. Questionnaires have been sent to more than 3,000 South Gloucestershire residents and local and national results will be published in early October. The survey can also be completed online using a short web link and code printed on the questionnaire. The results provide an accurate and up-to-date picture of residents’ views and will help the council assess its performance and prioritise and improve highways and transport services. Head of StreetCare Mark King said: “Public feedback is vital to help us improve and prioritise our highway services and this national survey, which is shared by 78 local authorities nationwide, is a very costeffective way of gathering the public’s views. “I hope everyone who receives the survey will take a minute to fill it in and return it, by post or online.”

They looked after him now army veteran Bill is giving something back He saw action in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, but Bill Knight’s biggest battle came many years after he finally left the armed forces. Several years after the former Royal Hussar returned to civilian life, family breakdown saw him down on his luck and with little to look forward to. That was when Bill discovered the Alabare Bristol Home for Veterans in Filton which looks after ex-servicemen and helps them get back on their feet. Their unique programme of support worked for Bill - so much so that he is now living independently again and has become an ambassador for the charity. Last month Bill was presented with an Inspire award by the charity for his work promoting their work and supporting new residents. He gathered with friends, representatives from the charity and team leader Rob Stewart for a presentation in the garden of the Filton home. Bill said: “I came here with no hope and no self esteem but Rob and the staff looked after me and now I have had the chance to put something back.” His citation for his award read: “Bill has been involved in various events for Alabare promoting our veterans’
work. For example, when the Gloucester home opened he represented Alabare in a positive light by sharing his personal experiences of having been a client of our service and his subsequent move to independent living. “He has recently trained to be a befriender for the Bristol/ Gloucester projects, helping new residents to settle by supporting them in a variety of ways. “Bill’s input has not only benefitted clients but staff as well at the project, by helping to free up some of their time for other duties.” Alabare has three homes in Bristol - on Southmead Road and in Lockleaze as well as in Filton - and across the South West they have 57 beds, with 200 veterans having been supported since 2009. Normally a veteran will stay for around a year while the staff help give them the skills to move forward postitively in life.
Veterans come to Alabare Bristol Home for Veterans with different issues, including posttraumatic stress, addictions, ill health and relationship problems. The charity is backed by the Royal British Legion, the Army Benevolant Fund and the Merchant Venturers but relies on support from the public. For more information, call 01722 322882 or visit www.alabare. co.uk Alabare also looks after people with learning issues, mental health problems, the homeless and others “on the margins” of society.

‘We’ll clear deficit’ Financial statements presented to Filton Town Council last month revealed that they are in deficit of over £11k.
Filton will benefit from a share of £86 million of Government funding awarded to the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) t The money will be available from 2015/16 to help boost economic growth in South Gloucestershire and the wider West of England region, creating 5,000 jobs. The projects include: • £2 million to construct a new ‘composite’ footbridge on the A4174 Ring Road at Bromley Heath, linking the Filton and Emersons Green Enterprise Areas and Bristol Parkway station. • The Advanced Engineering Centre at Bristol College, Filton Campus is one of a number of projects to benefit from a Capital Build programme worth £32 million. • Money is also earmarked to re-open the Henbury rail line. Accountant Derek Kemp read out the statements, and stated that the reasons for the shortfall were due to a substantial amount of VAT being owed at the end of last financial year, and a faulty electricity meter, which meant money had to be paid back to British Gas. However, councillors said that a profit had been made at the Ratepayers Arms in April and May, and that they are “going in the right direction” to clear the deficit. The council hopes to “break even” by the end of the next financial year.

Outdoor fitness facility is up and running for locals
Filton’s new outdoor fitness area has now been completed. The eight pieces of equipment are sited on the cycle speedway track which has attracted criticism in recent years due to lack of use. Meanwhile Filtonvoice understands the new play area at Elm Park will be completed in time for the summer holidays. Filton Sports and Leisure centre manager Scott Fessey said: “Open all day every day, the outdoor fitness area has eight pieces of equipment ranging from rowing machines and sit up benches to various upper body machines. “For many people those first initial steps to becoming more active can be hard. “Outdoor fitness can be the gateway to a better, healthier
lifestyle for people of all ages. Being free, convenient and accessible to all, it removes many of the barriers that might prevent people from taking those initial steps. “Research has shown that even small amounts of regular exercise have measurable benefits towards physical and mental health and wellbeing. “Other benefits include: • Low running costs with widespread benefits • Low maintenance costs • Strong vandal resistant construction • Very low carbon footprint • Aligns with Government policies • Community facility open to all and of benefit to all • Acts as an advertisement to promote healthier lifestyles”

Bollards may be answer to prevent travellers’ camps Filton Town Council may install bollards at Elm Park to prevent a repeat of the illegal travellers’ camp which arrived on the football field earlier this month. Residents complained about fly tipping and after negotiations between the town council, South Glos and police, the travellers eventually moved on. Council chairman Rikki Teml told residents on Facebook: “We feel your frustrations as were made clear to the council last night at the finance meeting. “We also agreed to take steps to hopefully prevent this from happening again in the future, with the installation of bollards to protect the field following my initial concerns that I raised a month ago as I was concerned we were a prime target for travellers.”

Successful first year for village primary school
As the academic year comes to a close, Wallscourt Farm Academy are celebrating their first full year. The academy, situated at the heart of the new Cheswick development, is part of the Cabot Learning Federation of schools. Reception-aged children started in September, with the school being part learning zones, part construction site until February.
Children from the Oak learning zone have seen the space transformed, and are now looking forward to developing the farm and wildlife areas at the academy. Over the year, the children have been engaging with the local community, visiting Stoke Park and exploring the woods, learning with students from UWE and visiting Beaufort Grange care home to visit

the residents. At the end of term, the children are taking part in a carnival dance, and transforming the school into a woodland wonderland.
Principle Susie Weaver said: “The farm element is really growing and developing within the local community - we have a school dog called Noodle and chickens will be hatching next year. She added: "A new group of children is all ready to be welcomed into Wallscourt Farm Academy in September, and it is sure to be an exciting year ahead."

Rikki honoured at retail awards
A Filton councillor has been rewarded for his success in his day job at a prestigious awards ceremony. Rikki Teml, who has been manager of Clifton Down Shopping Centre since 2012, was named runner-up in the Centre Manager of the Year (Small Centre) category at the national Sceptre Awards 2014. The annual ceremony, which honours best practice among those working in the retail industry, was held at The Dorchester in London on June 24. Rikki, who is also chairman of Filton Town Council, has earned recognition for his commitment to reducing the centre’s impact on the environment, encouraging all staff, tenants and their workforce to help reduce energy use and make cost savings as a priority. He has worked to identify
all areas of the centre’s environmental impact, aiming to minimise any negative effects wherever he can, with efforts paying off when Clifton Down was named a zero waste centre. Rikki praised the work of his staff and the support of tenants in helping him achieve the runner-up title on behalf of the shopping centre. The Sceptre Awards honour was followed just two weeks later with another accolade, when Rikki was named runner-up in the shopping centre of the year category by Workman LLP, the managing agents of Clifton Down Shopping Centre. The nomination again pointed to his work towards environmental responsibilty and to the support he gave a woman who gave birth in the shopping centre’s car park earlier this year.

Rubbish dumped behind shops
Seeking details of council finances
Dear editor Please find attached photo of the new image of Filton. I am very disappointed that Filton Council claim that they can do nothing to sort out the rubbish problem at the side of the vets’ near Filton Church. I have tried in vain to have this sorted, all with no luck. Surely someone has a duty of care? South Glos froze the council tax this year, but Filton was the only one with an increase!! Ray Thomas, Filton

centre manager, pub manager AND town clerk. There is simply no drive to reduce costs and we as taxpayers are expected to pay salaries to a small parish council team. £600,000 a year. Let’s hope independent Tory/ Labour councillor chair Teml, “fights” to get a grip on spending and orders a full review of staffing. They showed their lack of ability when travellers moved on to Elm Park and they deferred to South Glos council. What do we pay them for? Time to find savings in the staffing. Alistair (Filton)

Concerns over travellers’ camp
I was shocked to see travellers arrive on Elm Park but sadly not surprised to see the slow action of Filton Town Council on such a matter, nor their refusal to discuss it with residents at a recent finance meeting. No lessons learned. We yet again see inability to even bolt the door after the caravans have bolted but a half job attempt to install flimsy wooden bollards along the perimeter of the field! An open invitation for travellers to encamp in the car park or access elsewhere. Why on earth don’t they install low level barrier at the entrance similar to Glos Road North shops car park? There doesn’t seem any common sense between staff or councillors. Name supplied

Where was date change published?
So I went to the venue advertised on your website for the full council meeting and found the place locked and with several others waiting at the Pavilion door for the advertised meeting of the council. The council must update and, more importantly, revise their website with the latest information. At least Filton Voice indicated that there was to be a full council meeting at the Pavilion on Wednesday 25th June. Maybe it will happen, maybe! You really must pay attention to the information issued on your website. David Tombs l I went along to the council meeting at the pavilion as per the town council website. Myself and others stood waiting and

all locked up! When is this council going to get things right? No attention to details. No active management of staff performance and errors. Councillors who simply turn a blind eye to poor service yet recruit more staff. Please ensure your website is accurate with no spelling mistakes! Does anyone check these things? Mary, Conygre, Filton

Sell or Let with ease without feeling the squeeze
Online property advertising for landlords and vendors.
Sell for £299 inc VAT! Let for £119 inc VAT! We admit it, we’re new. Other agents may tell you that this explains our ‘madness’ in offering the lowest set fees when you sell or let your property. But we just think it’s fair. After all, why should you pay thousands in commission just for getting the best price you can for your property, when the agent doesn’t have to do any more work to earn it. So here’s the deal: Whatever the size or price of your house or flat, sell it with UrPad Online for a set fee of just £299 inc VAT, or let it for a set fee of just £119 inc VAT. And, although UrPad Online is a new company, the directors have actually got over 30 years’ experience in property, so we know just how it all works. To save on costs and help keep our fees so amazingly low, after our initial visit you can upload whatever property details and photos you like, giving you total control. And just think what you’ll save if you’ve got more than one property to sell or let! Once on our site, you’ll also automatically be listed on all the major property portals (Zoopla, Prime Location etc) so that your property moves fast. Plus, of course, our two high street offices in Bristol will also be working their socks off on your behalf. And just to keep other agents thinking we’re completely barking, we’ll offer you a 100% no quibble, money back guarantee! How’s that for a win-win offer.

Let’s not wait for accident to happen The increased amount of traffic using Filton’s Northville Road has raised concerns regarding safety of the pedestrian crossing as the road exits onto Gloucester Road North, pictured above. As a Filton Councillor I have been approached regarding the closeness of the crossing to the central roundabout and the dangers that it presents. Existing pelican crossings along the main road (ie: A38) and the opposing Braemar Avenue are set well back from
this junction. Northville Road crossing is merely a pathway – virtually adjacent to the roundabout. This is used extensively particularly by users of mobility scooters and children. My recent approaches to South Gloucestershire Council on complainants’ behalf received a predicted response. A need to curtail expenditure on the one hand and linked to the fact that
no accidents had been reported there over a period of 3 years .. it was refused. That period of surveillance without accidents was achieved when Northville Road was lesser used than it is at present. The adjustment of links with Filton Avenue from the Horfield area has increased the road’s usage considerably. All the more reason to improve pedestrians’ safety

crossing it. At a recent meeting of the “Safer and Stronger South Gloucestershire Committee” held at Filton, requests to adjust the crossing was given priority I trust that the adjustment is eventually granted. It seems totally inappropriate that a request for added safety must depend on someone being injured to prove its legitimacy. Cllr Doug Daniels

Shield Road Primary
Schools’ fun-filled fetes For Shield Road head teacher Jim Mepham, the day ended as he probably expected it to - by being dunked with a bucket of green unpleasantness! Mr Mepham - predictably finished top of a poll asking who participants would like to see gunked. Visitors enjoyed lots of sunshine and plenty of fun and games, along with displays, stalls and plenty of ice cream. A feature was the arrival of the spectacular Dukes of Hazzard Gran Torino car with its trademark white flash. The fete was organised by Friends of Shield Road and more than £400 was raised for school funds.

are a sure sign summer’s here! The morning set-up crew of the Charborough Road Primary School Summer Fete were reassured that their last-minute decision to hold this year’s event indoors was a correct one – Mother Nature treated them to a tremendous thunder, lightning and torrential rain storm before the midday start time! The fete opened, however, to glorious sunshine and, despite occasional stormy-looking skies, the bouncy castles and bungee run were inflated, outside activities like the coconut shy, wet sponges and a glistening wet plant stall went ahead as planned. A special mention must go to Year 6 pupil Jacob Cook, who took the whole three-hour shift on Beat the Goalie as an incredible keeper. Families, staff, governors and the local community browsed the 30 or so stalls and attractions. Old favourites like splat the rat, hook a duck, face painting, candy floss, homemade cakes, lucky dip and bottle tombola all at pocket money prices meant there were plenty of chances to win prizes and get treats. Scrumpy, the Bristol City mascot, also paid a visit to meet all the children. There were performances outside by the school’s own dance group, an amazing interpretation of the Gruffalo by the South West Winterguard Cadets, and RhiActions Dance
Group. The fete is organised by the Friends of the school who would like to say a huge thank you to anyone involved in any way, and to everyone who came along and supported the day. It
is a community event, supported by more than 60 local companies which organisers also thank. The money raised will be used to fund fun extracurricular activities like outings, visits by

Filton Chest & Heart Committee
Invite Filton Residents with a chest or heart condition to receive support and friendship from their charitable organisation A sculpture produced by a Bristol-based artist has been officially unveiled by the Mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson, at its new permanent home on the Airbus Aerospace Park in Filton. Named Aeolus after the ruler of the winds in Greek mythology, the artwork is the creation of local artist Luke Jerram and has visited locations across the UK before Airbus invested in it as the centrepiece of their £70 million investment in the Filton facilities.
Aeolus will also be a major part of an education project aimed at schoolchildren, and workshops developed by Airbus graduates will help youngsters uncover the aerodynamic and acoustic secrets of the sculpture. Mayor Ferguson cut the ribbon on the artwork at a celebration event attended by students from Orchard School who have been helping with the development of the education programme.
Members of the Committee organise coach outings, skittles evenings, coffee mornings, afternoon teas and lunches. Fund raising plays a major part of the charity's role which enables the Committee to purchase additional medical equipment for use in the Filton G.P surgeries, as well as the Respiratory and Cardiology Departments at Southmead Hospital.

News Beautiful books to help honour
The Rev Stephen Oram, right, and Gordon Comley of SANDS
Beautiful bound books of remembrance for babies have been presented to the chaplaincy teams at Southmead and St Michael’s hospitals by the Bristol branch of the stillbirth and neonatal death charity SANDS. At Southmead the books are placed in the new Sanctuary at the heart of the Brunel building. This is a multi-faith space where patients, staff and visitors can come at any time to reflect and remember. The Rev Stephen Oram, chaplaincy team leader for both Bristol NHS trusts, said: “Books of remembrance for babies have been in place at both hospitals since the 1980s. It’s somewhere for families to come on anniversaries to reflect on their loss and to have a permanent reminder of their baby is very important for them. “SANDS has provided three books for each hospital which will last us many years. We’re very grateful to them for their continued support.” Gordon Comley, treasurer of the Bristol branch of SANDS, said: “It’s great to be able to help keep the tradition of remembrance going. The Sanctuary really is a beautiful place.” SANDS supporters gathered at Southmead last month for the formal hand-over of the books to the hospital. Hilary Sturgeon, Reg Coombs and Helen and Nigel Dilling, all from Bristol, have all experienced first-hand the loss of a baby. Hilary Sturgeon lost her baby five years ago. She said: “Writing
down their details in a book of remembrance is often the only permanent written reminder for families who have suffered a loss.” Helen Dilling lost her baby Sophie when she was 23 weeks into her pregnancy. She said: “The support we received from the chaplaincy team here at Southmead was brilliant. Our chaplain was amazing and made such a difference to us both.” Reg Coombs said: “We lost our daughter in 2012 around 30 weeks into the pregnancy. It’s important to have somewhere in the hospitals to reflect and remember.” SANDS holds two memorial services each year in Bristol in May and December which parents can attend to remember their babies. The books are gathered from each hospital and taken to the services and put on display. The Rev Stephen Oram said: “Both trusts have a long relationship with SANDS and we are really grateful for their support in providing these books, which will last us many years. “At Southmead, the books which record babies that have been stillborn or have died shortly after birth are placed in our new sanctuary – a multi-faith space which has been sensitively designed as a place people can come for quiet contemplation and reflection.” For more information about SANDS visit www.bristolsands. org.

Shape future of care for children
Local people are being asked for their views to help shape children’s community health services in South Gloucestershire. NHS South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) – which plans and buys healthcare for the local population – and the council want to hear about frontline experiences of children’s community health services from young people, parents, carers, youth workers, schools and others. The contracts for these services are due to expire in March 2016. Dr Kate Mansfield, clinical lead for children and maternity at South Gloucestershire CCG, said: “We want to know what is working well – and where improvements could be made.” The survey – which can be completed in confidence – is available via www.surveymonkey. com/s/RGY7R9W. It takes a few minutes to complete and is online until Monday, July 21.

Summer sessions for safer driving
Free courses designed to help people become better drivers are on offer in Filton over the summer. More than a thousand people have already signed up to take part in Avon and Somerset
Police’s Road Smart scheme. One session has been specially created for younger drivers, aged 17 to 24, while the other is open to anyone aged 25 or older. Supt Ian Smith said: “Many crashes are caused by human error and the main aim of the scheme is to increase drivers’ awareness of the potential hazards to look out for on the

roads and to build on their experience to help increase their safety. “The sessions are open to motorists of any age but we are particularly keen to encourage young drivers aged between 17 and 24 to sign up since around a third of all serious collisions in our area involve this age group. “We would encourage all
drivers to sign up to a session and to encourage their friends and relatives to do the same.” Courses for 17-24-year olds take place at the Holiday Inn, Filton, on July 25, August 3 and 10. Sessions for older drivers take place at the same venue on July 18 and August 2. Find out more and book at www.roadsmart.org.

Now that the UK has actually seen enough sunshine for it to be officially summer, more time is being spent outside soaking up the rays that are usually in such short supply at garden barbecues, cool pub terraces along the waterfront and, of course, the Downs. It means sunglasses season is finally here, and that we need to protect our precious eyes from the sun’s glare. Not only do sunglasses serve a very practical purpose, they’re also everyone’s favourite accessory! There are countless options for eyewear for all facial shapes and styles, from tortoiseshell frames to coloured mirrored lenses. The major trends this season include: Wayfarers These are for that laid-back style and suit almost all face shapes making them accessible for all. Extra help in store for food bank Staff at Sainsbury’s East Filton have teamed up with North Bristol Foodbank to help feed local families in need. The store will now have a permanent donation point where customers can drop off tinned food and other items, ready to be sent out to those who need them. Workers from the supermarket will also be volunteering at the foodbank to help its volunteers sort through donations from the public. Angela Newman from Sainsbury’s said: “We do work with the local food bank at least twice a year where customers can donate food items but feel that we would really like to help more in the community. “Having a permanent donation point in store means we can help this worthy cause all year round. Our colleagues are also keen to volunteer and give something back to the local area.” Stewart North from North Bristol Foodbank said: “North
Sainsbury’s East Filton employees have decided to install a permanent food collection point for North Bristol Foodbank as well as volunteering with the charity Bristol Foodbank fed 2,808 people during the last financial year 2013/14 and continued to sadly see an increase in the number of people who have been referred to this local foodbank.
“We now partner with 103 different care professional organisations who refer clients to the foodbank. “We are so grateful for the support of local people who
regularly donate food to the foodbank and are so encouraged to see this new permanent foodbank collection point at Sainsbury’s East Filton store.”
‘It’s so hard to hear the stories – but people leave with hope for change’ by Rebecca Day The 2,800 people fed by North Bristol Foodbank last year represents a rise of 2,000 on the previous year. And it is thought that this number is set to grow. Stewart North, co-founder of the foodbank, says the reliance on food banks is going to increase over the next three to five years, due to changes in the welfare system. Low income, delays and changes to benefits,
redundancy, ill health, debt and homelessness are thought to be the main causes for people seeking support from local foodbanks. A spokesperson for the North Bristol Foodbank said: “It has been a really busy year at the foodbank. It’s been so hard to hear the stories of people who are referred to us but we are pleased to be in a position to respond to their needs, support them, and signpost to other

One voucher provides enough food for three days, and
clients can receive a maximum of three foodbank vouchers in a row. Longer term support is available in exceptional circumstances. with Filton Sgt Steve Ives This month I want to talk a little about drugs, the effect they have on the community and what we are doing to deal with the problem. There are a number of ways in which drugs in our community affect us all. Most significantly they are the biggest reason for crime being committed. Offences from shoplifting to robbery can be carried out in order pay for a drug habit. Another aspect is that the supply of drugs gives rise to a considerable amount of disorder and anti-social behaviour. The problem is that a lot of people, especially the users of these drugs, don’t recognise this as a problem. Both these effects of the use of drugs have a direct impact on policing. For that reason we spend a significant amount of time in gathering intelligence and disrupting the use and supply of drugs. It takes time and a good amount of information to obtain the warrants necessary to catch and prosecute those involved. In the overwhelming number
of cases this comes from members of the community and we are very grateful for those who tell us what is going on. A great recent example was when we had numerous reports of people and vehicles turning up at all hours of the day and night at an address in Filton. When we investigated further we thought this nuisance behaviour might be because drugs were being supplied from an address. We had enough information to obtain a warrant to search the property and, as a result, one person has been arrested and is on bail for supplying drugs. This was all a result of the information you, the public, gave us. My plea is for this information to continue to come in. If you suspect it report it, either through our website, by calling 101 – or, if you want to remain anonymous, call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call.

It can intercept access to banking and then use the information to allow the hackers to access your bank. Added to this it can also install a component which can encrypt your hard drive. Unfortunately the only way to get your data back is to pay the hackers. The NCA and FBI recently significantly disrupted the people behind the attacks. During the operation they found the virus was programmed to start encrypting data on June 17, 2014. Everyone was warned to check their PCs, but fortunately the expected mass infection did not happen. Perhaps people updated their antivirus programs or the virus was not as widespread as was feared. So how can you prevent this from happening to you? As the virus mainly spreads via email either using an attachment or a link, the usual advice still holds. Do not click on links or open attachments on emails from people you do not recognise. Often they claim to be from organisations like the Inland Revenue, banks or parcel delivery services. And, of course, please check your antivirus software is up to date and running. Why not run a virus scan just in case. Of course, if you would like to have a chat about how best to keep your PC secure, please contact us on 0117 969 8767 or visit us in our shop on the corner of Filton Avenue and the A4174.

News Free fun this summer as library launches challenge Filton youngsters and their families are being invited to take part in holiday fun at the local library this summer – with a series of a-maze-ing activities. Staff at Filton Library will be launching the Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge on Saturday, July 12, with free stories and crafts for young readers from 10.30am-noon. The free challenge is beginning in all South Gloucestershire libraries and children are being invited to read just six books to collect a medal and certificate. More than 7,000 children took part in the Creepy House challenge last summer. The parent of one child said: “As the mother of a very reluctant
reader I was worried about him not reading over the holiday but this reading challenge changed everything. “He asked to keep coming back to the library and even finished some books by the end of the same day.” The challenge runs until September 13, when there will again be free crafts and stories at Filton library from 10.30amnoon. A series of events will be held at the branch over the summer: l Snakes and Mirrors Make your own Medusa magic with sensational snakes and mythical mirror. Add to this the fabulous Ladyboys of Bedlam, a gloriously colourful troupe of belly-dancers (along with Paul the Polar Bear, something of a Stepping Out tradition, I understand), and a nod in the direction of the Rude Mechanicals from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and you’re left with a production that is not only achingly funny but also challenges head-on all those destructive notions about mental illness and its treatment. This, truly, is theatre with a purpose.
Councillors have given the goahead for public consultation on the final part of South Gloucestershire’s Local Plan. The Policies, Sites and Places plan will form a key part of the up-to-date Local Plan, alongside the council’s Core Strategy – which was adopted last year covering the period up to 2017 – and will set out the detailed policies that will be used to assess planning applications in the future. Among its provisions, the plan sets out the council’s proposed policy on the Oldbury nuclear power station new-build. Consultation will run until August 28. All comments will then be reviewed and any changes proposed will be considered by councillors in December. Far from being doomygloomy, this is a playful, thought-provoking and, above all, honest look at the perception and treatment of health service users. A stroke of genius was having the main character, Lucy, played by five actors, representing different facets of her personality at varying times in her life, as she struggles to find herself amid the insanity of a Mental Analysis Diagnostics supervisor who colour-codes emotions, duplicitous psychiatrists and vicious Mental Elfs, Chemical Cara, the crazed drug-designer

FE When you’ve been afflicted by a strange new disorder that makes you believe you’re a character in a play about your own life, the last thing you need is help from a polar bear who claims he’s a psychiatric nurse and a self-declared “swashbuckling pirate of psychiatry”. Or is it? Because whom do you trust when anxiety and self-doubt blur the boundaries of reality and you’re in danger of losing the plot? Stepping Out is a charitable organisation which has been working with users of the mental health services and their allies since its foundation in 1997. Airbus staff best for bikes by far Airbus has the highest rate of employees who commute to work by bike in north Bristol. A survey by South Gloucestershire Council and North Bristol SusCom revealed nearly 20 per cent of workers at the Filton-based company cycle

with Michael Parry of Vets4Pets in Filton
The importance of neutering Unless you are planning to breed your pet, our vets at Vets4Pets and Companion Care in Filton recommend neutering due to the many health and behavioural benefits it offers. The most obvious reason for neutering is to avoid an unwanted litter of puppies. We all love puppies and kittens but a litter is expensive to look after and an awful lot of work, not to mention the worry of finding nice homes for all of them. Unfortunately, the number of unwanted cat and dogs is on the increase so it is more important than ever to make sure your pet doesn’t accidentally add to the problem. Michael Parry, vet and
practice partner of Vets4Pets Filton says “Neutering your pet not only prevents an unwanted litter; it also eradicates the risk of many types of cancer and helps to reduce aggression and territorial behaviour.” Companion Care Filton vet and practice partner Paul Guckian adds “Neutering is a popular and simple procedure for your pet. When your pet is neutered you would normally drop them off to us in the morning of the operation and pick them up the same afternoon.” Vets4Pets and Companion Care vets in Filton are working together to offer 25% off neutering. For more information call Michael and his team at Vets4Pets on 0117 969 8400 or call Paul and his team at Companion Care on 0117 979 9200.

On Wednesday 11th June, the Year 7, 8 and 9 girls’ and boys’ athletics teams and the Year 10 girls’ athletics team took part in the South Gloucestershire Athletics Championships at Brimsham Green. Every athlete did themselves and Abbeywood proud! They demonstrated fantastic team work, supported each other and cheered Abbeywood competitors over the finish line! Overall, Abbeywood finished 10th out of the 16 schools who took part — an excellent achievement given the size of our teams. There were superb performances by the Year 9 boys’ and girls’ teams who both finished 3rd out of the 16 schools that took part. l The Year 8 girls cricket team got to be official flag bearers at the Gloucestershire v Glamorgan T20 cricket match. Unfortunately for the players the game was rained off but the girls had a great day.

News Flyer announces new route in bid to boost numbers of passengers The Filton Flyer bus service route has been changed in a bid to increase passenger numbers. The service, which runs in Filton Monday to Friday, has been losing money since its launch before Christmas as passenger numbers have been building up. Since the beginning of this month, the service has cut out the outlying stops – Southmead Hospital and Parkway Station – in a bid to make it more attractive. The service is now running four times a day on a one-hour route starting at Filton College. Users had complained that the original route did not allow them to complete shopping or appointments since the route was too long, meaning some passengers had to complete almost a whole circuit to get home. The new route will run at 10am, 11am, noon and 1pm from the college, along the following route: Filton College, Conygre Grove, Conygre Road, Church View shops, Elm Park, Northville Rd, Filton Ave South, George Pub, Filton Abbeywood Station, Asda, Sainsbury’s then returning on a similar route to the college. Filton Town Council was told that not enough passengers were using the service for the hospital and Parkway. Cllr Brian Freeguard said in May that although passenger numbers
were rising month on month, greater volume was needed. The service was given a grant which makes it sustainable in the medium term but more passengers will be needed long term. For any comments ont he service, please email Joy on joy@4tvl.org.uk
