Computer repairs

I recently had a computer virus and on a Saturday morning I phoned Graham at gotoiT. He could not have been more helpful and asked me to bring my computer in straight away. Graham phoned me several times to keep me updated on his progress and I picked up my computer the following Tuesday, completely restored to health. I was impressed that he explained things to me in words I could understand and he was very professional. I am delighted to find such excellent service locally.

After reading the advert for DGR Windows in the ‘Voice’ we contacted them and 2 other companies who all attended and quoted for 6 replacement ‘Georgian’ barred double glazed units that had ‘misted’ up over the years. Not only was DGR Windows the cheapest quote but the time scale between measuring and fitting was just under 3 weeks. He is a very personable man and we would happily recommend his work to any person needing similar work to ourselves.

Royal honour for the lady who launched Filton’s church cafe

Rev Elspeth Desmond, the curate at St Peter’s Church in Filton, was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the community.

Rev Desmond, who was a driving force in the launch of the popular St Peter’s morning cafe, said she was shocked by the award but said it was very much for the people of Filton.

A Filton resident for nearly 60 years, Rev Desmond, 64, said she wanted to share the award with the small army of around 50 volunteers who have made the cafe such a welcoming destination in Filton.

She said she found out about the award several weeks ago when an “official-looking” letter arrived.

Until the announcement in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, she was sworn to secrecy.

Rev Desmond was ordained 20 years ago and she also worked as a chaplain at HMP Horfield for 12 years before leaving that post four years ago.

She said a lot of the motivation for launching the cafe in Filton was about making the church more open for the whole community.

She said: “We didn’t want to have that feeling of locking up the church on a Sunday until the following week “There was some opposition to the plan when we opened four years ago but I think people have warmed to the idea.

“We wanted it to be a place people wanted to come, with good coffee, home-made cakes and a warm welcome.

“It is the volunteers who make it, serving and baking, and they are also brilliant listeners.

“Starting the community cafe was always a dream, but it wasn’t until I was retired that I was able to do it, with the help and support of Canon Brian Arman.

“It’s been going from strength to strength and I couldn’t have done it without the help of the wonderful volunteers.

“I am delighted that

Rev Desmond said that for many visitors, the cafe offers a place to come for a chat, some advice or just to be quiet.

She said: “This church belongs to the community of Filton.

“I have always been part of the community. I attended Charborough road School and Filton High.”

Rev Desmond became involved at St Peter’s following the birth of her son, Lloyd, who had Down’s Syndrome.

She then formed a Down’s Syndrome support group.

Sadly, Lloyd died 10 years ago.

Rev Desmond and her husband Ian, who live in Filton Park, have a daughter, Claire, and two grandchildren.

She will receive her British Empire Medal from the Lord Lieutenant of South Gloucestershire in the church in the Autumn.

News Joy as ‘people power’ helps save Conygre House from bulldozers Conygre House - Filton’s 400-year-old farmhouse - has been saved from demolition.

South Glos councillors voted unanimously to sell the landmark house to counselling organisation Network Counselling for £250,000 - the lower of two bids on the table.

It is understood the other bidder was a housing organisation and there had been fears the building would be demolished with homes built on the site.

A packed public gallery full of Filton residents who had travelled to Thornbury by coach heard several impassioned pleas to save the house.

Councillors were told that the building should remain a community asset.

They were also told of support from Filton MP Jack Lopresti.

SCH vice chair Tony Blake told the meeting: “As a community we desperately need this facility.”

Katie Donovan, the Priority Neighbourhood Co-ordinator for Filton, said: We would champion any bid which would keep the hosue as a community asset.”

Stan Sims of Filton Community History, and a former councillor, said that if the house had been in the Cotswolds it would never have been placed under threat.

Filton councillor Ian Scott said it was not just about history, but about future generations.

Save Conygre House chairman Keith Briffett, who was cheered by the gallery as he told councillors the house would be good for “another 200 years,” said Conygre ward needed the house to help the area “claw back its pride and self-respect”..

Filton councillor Adam Monk told the meeting that the council had precedents for selling to lower bidders.

Member of the Resources Sub-Committee Cllr Tim Bowles (Con, Winterbourne) who proposed saving Conygre House at the meeting, said: “Conygre House is a historic local building and should be used to benefit the local community.

“I’m delighted, therefore, that my fellow committee members agreed with the Conservative proposal to save this Filton landmark in line with the overwhelming views of the community, including local MP Jack Lopresti.”

The unanimous decision to offer the house to Network Counselling was greeted wiht cheers.

Councillors did, however, insist on strict lease arrangements to ensure then house remains in the community whatever might happen in the future.

Aferwards, Mr Briffett said: “This is a vote for the local community and for democracy.

“We now want to help Network Counselling as much as we can to help the people of Filton.”

Cllr Monk said: “I was delighted that the ‘Busload of Campaigners from Filton’ had made a successful journey to Thornbury to convince the council of the value of retaining the historic Conygre House for the benefit of future generations.

“The reason I put this item on the agenda was to enable Filton Residents to have their say and I am glad residents have won cross party support to give Conygre House a new lease of life and preserve a part of Filton’s heritage.

“The friends of Conygre House deserve their success.”

Filton town councillor Brian Mead said: “South Glos councillors have listened to the people of Filton.”

Cllr Bowles, however, said the decision to save the house could have been made in 2005.

He said: “Filton Labour politicians should never have voted for it to be included on the council’s property disposal list in 2005 - we could have saved 8 years of heartache had local Labour politicians bothered to listen to local people in the first place.”

In 2005, the council Cabinet - including councillors from all parties - voted for disposal.

“The actual decision was taken by a single cabinet member in January 2008 who had an option to sell with a covenant that the house should be retained but converted to a different use or to go for maximum income by allowing it to be sold to the highest bidder knowing that demolition would be the most

likely outcome. He chose the latter which I expressed my opposition to at the time and have repeated many times since.

“I joined the “Friends of Conygre House” at its formation and have attended many of their meetings. I supported the retention of the building and I am delighted at the outcome.”

Filton shoppers raise £4,700 for hospice

A leading charity is nearly £5,000 better off thanks to Filton shoppers.

Sainsbury’s East Filton has chosen to support Children’s Hospice South West and recently handed over a cheque for £4700 as a result of fundraising in the past year.

East Filton customers voted for their favourite local charity between 1st and 15th May This is the fifth year of the retailer’s ‘Local Charity Partner’ initiative, which gives local registered charities the chance to receive a year’s worth of fundraising and awareness support from store colleagues.

Customers and colleagues at Sainsbury’s East Filton have played a big part in the success of the Local Charity Partner initiative.

Last year, their generous donations helped to raise approximately £4000 for St Peter’s Hospice.

Among the highlights of the partnership, which closed in May, included colleagues abseiling down a Bristol hotel, a sponsored sky dive, cake sales and carol singing!

Sainsburys East Filton store manager Joyal Masih added: “Our work with previous Local Charity Partners over the years has been really successful.”

Have your say on council tax reduction People in Filton are being invited to comment on proposals for a new local council tax reduction scheme to be introduced in April 2014.

The consultation is open until 16 September.

In April council tax benefit was replaced by a local council tax reduction scheme. People who are entitled to council tax reduction pay less council tax. Under the current council tax reduction scheme there is a shortfall in funding and the council needs to consult about changing the scheme from April 2014.

If it is not changed this could result in a rise of more than 2.5% in council tax for everyone.

Another £6,000 bill for by-election as 2nd Labour councillor to quit Filton town councillor Andy Chubb will be resigning from the council, he has told Filtonvoice.

The Conygre Labour councillor, right, walked out of a finance meeting this month following the appointment of Cllr Bill Moore as vice chair and Cllr Mel Drewett as chair of that committee.

Cllr Chub said he had understood Cllr Moore was going to stand down from a leading position on the committee.

Cllr Moore insisted he only said he would stand down as chair.

Cllr Chubb said he believed council decisions were being made “before meetings” by

a small group of leading councillors, to the exclusion of remaining councillors.

He said: “I have stopped attending meetings and I intend to be an ex-councillor. I am at odds with a lot of things discussed.

“There are 13 councillors but many of us do not have an input (which raises questions) about democracy and transparency.”

Similar accusations were made last year against the local Labour branch. Labour members said it was reasonable to discuss all sorts of matters away from the public gaze.

Although he has not formally resigned yet, a by-election would cost the town council £6,000 to organise, it is understood.

This would be the second byelection this year after another Conygre Labour councillor, Bill Edgeworth, stepped down.

Following Mr Edgeworth’s resignation, Filton elected its first UKIP councillor when Keith Briffett was elected.

Cllr Moore said: “I firmly believe that the current Council have done more for transparency and openness than any previous Council. There will always be improvements that could be made, but I think what we have achieved is admirable.

“With regard to his resignation his decision is regrettable on two counts, 1. That he will as a result of his action cost the tax payer approx £6,000 in holding an election. 2. That his resignation is unfair to the residents who elected him to work on their behalf.”

Council chairman Darryl Collins said: “Filton Town Council would be sorry to lose Andy as a councillor but at this time I have not seen a letter

of resignation and until that eventuality I believe Andy Chubb to be a Filton Town Councillor.

“An election would normally be called on receiving a councillor’s resignation, assuming the option of co-opting someone into the position is not agreeable, and it’s my guess that’s an unlikely option.”

Councillor Chubb’s resignation would mean Filton Labour has lost four members from the council since the election in 2010. Along with Cllr Edgeworth, Cllr Moore is now an Independent while Cllr Drewitt is now “Independent Labour”.

In addition, former Conservative councilllors Rikki Teml and Kieran Hyde are also now Independents. The political makeup (assuming Cllr Chubb resigns) is: Independent 6, Labour 3, Conservative 2, UKIP 1 plus one vacancy.

School may be first for new parking

South Glos’s first ‘parking enforcement’ car could be heading for Filton soon amid the ongoing problem of dangerous parking and driving at a local primary school.

Cllr Roger Hutchinson has requested that the car, which will target ‘high-risk’ areas outside schools as well as bus stops, pedestrian crossings and taxi ranks in a bid to enhance road safety and reduce traffic congestion, may be brought to Filton Hill School very soon.

Filton transport news clampdown car

The car’s introduction this month follows pilot testing and public consultation last autumn which revealed high

levels of public support for the scheme.

Roads update from Councillor Roger Hutchinson Filton Roundabout works Work has now commenced on the Ring Road and as I reported last month the road works at the entrance to Airbus by Pegasus House were completed in time.

In conjunction with the new entrance the 30mph limit has been moved back down the hill.

Filton Traffic Management The Traffic Regulation Order for the traffic management and resident only scheme in the Kenmores was finally approved at the PT&SE meeting on the 12th June. I am now seeking to ensure that this is implemented without delay.

The consultations have also now been competed on schemes at New Road/Station Rd/ Pilkington Close and The Sidings and the way forward on this is currently being considered.

Similarly, there are suggested amendments in Nutfield Grove which are under consideration.

Shield Road School The investigation has now

been completed and it is being proposed that speed tables be put in at appropriate locations and a 20 mph limit advertised.

Charborough Road School Two speed tables and a 20 mph limit proposed and the scheme added to “Priority list”.

Northville Road The investigation in respect of Northville Road has been carried out following concerns raised by residents about the volume of through traffic using the road.

As a result of the investigation there are 2 proposed measure the first is to review the traffic calming, which will involve lifting the current speed tables and replacing them with tarmac ones, plus a 20 mph limit. Secondly to make the access to Cropthorne Road from Northville Road aNo Entry.

Dunkeld Avenue The new proposal is to put in two speed tables and make Dunkeld a 20mph limit. Dunkeld is currently being resurfaced.

l Photographers from Filton of all abilities are invited to share their skills, learn new ones and listen to speakers with a growing camera club.

Kingswood Photographic Society has around 70 members from a wide area and are welcoming new members to join them for their Friday meetings.

Each week the group exhibit their work and share tips and experience, with some acting as mentors for newer photographers.

Meetings are held from 7pm for a 7.30pm start at St Barnabas Church Hall, Church Avenue, in Warmley.

l Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti has welcomed the Government’s plans for the future of the UK Reserve Forces.

The plans were announced by the Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, with details in a White Paper.

The White Paper re-iterates the Government’s commitment to the Reserves as part of a £1.8 Billion investment, over 10 years, into better kit and training as well as a re-structuring programme.

The White Paper also announces two increases in the remuneration of reservists through the introduction of a paid annual leave entitlement in respect of training days and

through the accrual of pension entitlements.

A local practice has won one of the UK’s top awards for GP surgeries.

Horfield Health Centre has won the Quality Practice Award for the third time.

The practice is one of just four (out of 10,000 nationally) to have won this prestigious award on three occasions.

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Quality Practice Award is a rigorous accreditation process that promotes and recognises the highest quality care for patients.

It is the UK’s highest attainable award for quality in General Practice and each award lasts for 5 years.

Airfield future

Regarding Filton Airfield, I do not disguise the fact that I view the Airfield and its exceptional runway as a “national asset.”

Yet at the same time I do not wish it to remain a liability.

In these stringent economic times we have to act positively.

The airfield cannot remain an antiquity ... it has to be upkept.

I commend the extensive efforts currently under way with “Airbus” at Filton. The importance of its aircraft industry is being duly recognised.

Yet I disagree with the view that the airfield should be used for a “mix of light industry and housing.” That philosophy has long since gone.

garden gate no longer exists. A distinct separation – described as a “buffer zone”! – must now separate the two.

As a former Northavon District Councillor (now South Gloucestershire Council) I campaigned extensively to preserve the open space overlooking the BAWA Centre in Filton’s Southmead Road and the adjacent Filton Golf Course.

Both were proposed for housing development.”

Happily by resorting to a legal argument – declared by the Government’s “Secretary of State” a defined ”Buffer Zone” must separate the two – ie: housing and industry.” The open space was retained much to the satisfaction of all concerned, particularly golfers!

Surely the same legality must still apply to the Filton Airfield.

The bygone days when you could ‘mix’ industry with housing are long since gone.

A self-same ”buffer zone” must be maintained between the encroaching “Charlton Heys” development at Patchway and the industry bordering, the airfield runway.

I am convinced that there is an alternative to abolishing this National Asset and replacing it with a so-called “mix of housing and industry.”

An important public meeting – non-political – will be held at the Filton Community Centre, Elm Park on July 18th commencing at 7.30 pm to

update everyone on the Airfield activities.

You are especially invited to be present.

BAe may have sold the airfield over – yet its use might yet be in doubt.

Filton’s garden

I’m really looking forward to the grand opening of Filton Community Garden on the festival day.

It’s been a long time since this project, along with a long wish list of others, was tabled in 2011

by Elm Park Working Group (EPWG) and that list now forms Filton’s Town Plan.

Other projects in the Town Plan which are in the Elm Park area include the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), keep fit trim trail, cafe, barbecue area, improved teen shelter and many more!

It’s fantastic that people have got together with such enthusiasm to make one of these projects a reality.

I hope this success will encourage the community to give the necessary ‘oomph’ to support other projects in the same way.

This is also a good time to celebrate the protection of Elm Park for recreation by the Fields in Trust which also came about by the persistence of the residents involved in the EPWG. Helen Johnson

Ken Hoare: I went for a walk at Elm Park this evening with my daughter there were people sitting on the benches talking and enjoying themselves then along came 4 young lads who started swearing and shouting at these people who were simply enjoying themselves.

I asked the lads to calm down and watch their language. You would not believe what they said to me in front of my 8-year-old daughter. I told them I would phone the police and they said: “Go on then they cannot do anything.” I walked away and they carried on shouting at the people sitting there. Where has respect gone?

Alison Kearin: I used to go and sit in the garden area in the corner (Link Road/Gloucester Rd North) by the dentist’s. It was a great place for me to sit, think, reflect and cry after my Mum died and I would have been devastated if that peace and quiet had been disturbed!

Pete Abraham: I wish they would dismantle that eye sore youth shelter-that is a hotspot for yobs to hang about. I call it Filtons “Turbo Island”, like the one down Gloucester Road. Move it to the youth club if it’s a must but not in front of the Ratepayers - very off-putting when you see them gobbing off and acting like animals.

Roger Hutchinson: Vandalism has continued at the boule terrain, with the scoreboard bent and needing repair and a picnic table ripped from the fixings holding it to the ground was found in the bushes and they are intentionally heavy so that they can’t be moved around easily!!!

I really fear for the community garden which is taking shape nicely and should be respected as should all public property.

Residents’ pride

We were privileged to be present last night when Filton residents put forward convincing arguments persuading South Gloucestershire Councillors to recommend saving Conygre House.

Conygre was once important as a manor of Filton and a farmhouse, then offices for various local government departments from the late 1930s.

The house has been emptied and neglected for a number of years.

Well done to the group of Filton residents whose enthusiasm and commitment kept preservation on the agenda.

They convinced South Glos Councillors of the heritage value of the site; also that the community would benefit from retaining the garden and the new use resource that will be available.

Shield Road Primary School

Last month saw the residents of Filton turn out in numbers to support the Shield Rd School Summer Fete.

The fete marked the culmination of a week of special activities to celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary that saw the children enjoying coin trails, Punch and Judy and a street party.

There was even a special school roast dinner to mark the event.

Despite an early downpour that soon gave way to bright sunshine, the main event kicked off in style on Saturday lunchtime with the crowds enjoying the three bouncy castles, a complete suite of specially built games including traditional favourites “Ball in the Bog” and “Catch the Rat” and various other stalls The arena was kept busy with displays by the Blue Flames Cheerleaders and the locally based Tang Soo Do club, while the well appointed “Owl Inn” refreshments marquee was doing a frantic trade where huge plates of paella with chicken, mega burgers and crepes were washed down with a range of ice cold beverages This event was the result of months of planning by the volunteer Friends of Shield Rd (FOS) headed by chairperson Kirstie Barnes and was supported by the school staff and teachers who got involved to help with setting up, manning of the stalls and, in the case of head teacher Jim Mephan, going above and beyond the call of duty when he became the first ever victim of

the bespoke built “Gunge Tank” (complete with real BBC gunge) as voted for by the children.

Creator of the tank, vice chair of governors Dan Webb’s laughter was short lived as he became its second victim and brought the fete to a hysterical but messy close. Rumour has it other schools in the locality are interested in hiring this “novel” attraction, so head teachers beware!

First time parent helper Sean Walsh said: “This school is significant in my family as my mother was a 1930s student, my grandfather was its first ever caretaker and now, following myself, my daughter is the third generation to attend here.

“The amount of hard work put in by the friends of the school has to be seen to be believed but above all its great fun and very rewarding to see so many people having a good time while we raise funds for the kids.

“The proceeds are still being counted although it is clear they will be significant.

“It is intended that these funds will be used to re-stock the school library with books.”

The Friends of Shield Rd School meet at 18:30 on the second Monday of the month at the school and welcome new members.

More than 30 Year 9 students were involved in a hands on STEM challenge delivered by the Small-peice Trust, an independent charity providing exciting programmes to promote engineering careers to young people.

Students were challenged to plan, design, make and market a wind turbine that fulfilled complex success criteria. Students also had to cost out the resources required for making their wind turbine.

The winning team was “Field Flow”.

The team worked brilliantly throughout the day, with all team members contributing equally to the overall

finished products. They now have an opportunity to go to the ss Great Britain to showcase their business plan, marketing and model and will be competing against other students from South Gloucestershire schools.

The day allowed students to appreciate the importance of team work, but also allowed them to see what engineering is like and the different career pathways that might interest them in the future.

Winning “Team Field Flow” members were: Ben Davies, Andras Varady, Lucy Daniel, Jemmy Bin Yousef, Emily Rollings, Rebecca Ryan, and Finley.

Bishop and balloons for anniversary

St Teresa’s Catholic Primary

More than 200 balloons were released into the sky over north Bristol as St.Teresa’s Catholic Primary school celebrated its 50th Anniversary.

The school also celebrated a special dedication Mass presided over by the Bishop of Clifton, Declan Lang. This was attended by every child, staff members, many parents, friends of the school, and former heads Bernard Brain and Gordon Nicholas.

Head teacher Amanda Pritchard said: “What a

marvellous day we had, celebrating 50 years of our school family and welcoming so many friends, families, past pupils and staff. At the centre of the celebration was our special Mass and it was a real privilege to welcome Bishop Declan.

“It was a chance for us to reaffirm our commitment to serving our children both now and for future generations to come.

“All schools are about teaching and learning but as a Catholic school we are about teaching, learning and faith and as a school we are very much intertwined with the life of our

parishes, supported by our Parish Priest, Father Tom Finnegan.”

Pupil Nimmy said “It’s an honour to be here to celebrate the Anniversary of our school.”

Shanaz said: “We are honoured that Bishop Declan came to celebrate with us.”

Merin said: “This is the best way to mark our Golden Jubilee.”

St. Teresa’s School was built in 1963, just two years after the new and larger St. Teresa’s Church was opened, all under the guidance of the then parish priest Fr. Dennis Lucey.

As part of the anniversary, organisers have been establishing an Ex-Pupils’ Jubilee Fund to enable former pupils to give something back to support the future work of the school.

The school was recently judged by OFSTED as ‘Good’ with outstanding features and its religious inspection to be an ‘Outstanding’ catholic school.

Orchard School Bristol

We recently held our third annual Community Fun Day, run by the With One Voice Partnership, a collaboration between Orchard School, Filton Avenue Junior and Infant Schools, and Upper Horfield Community School.

It was a great afternoon of activities for families and students alike. There were some brilliant stalls, including Bob the Builder and the chance to try out a digger, lots of food and drink, a pillow fight and much more. Entertainment came from students, including our school choir.

“Mum is in Charge”

Charborough Road Primary

Charborough Road Primary played host to a Key Stage One Music Festival on a ‘Space’ theme.

Children from Charborough Road, Filton Hill, Shield Road and St Michael’s took part, and arrived at the Festival in weird and wonderful costumes – from Buzz Lightyear to Doctor Who! There were aliens, avatars, astronauts and a whole host of other creatures in spacerelated costumes. It was clear that the parents had been very busy!

The children had prepared a variety of songs with their teachers, and performed them altogether on the day, led by a very lively Space Queen (aka Mrs Wright from South Gloucestershire Music Hub!).

A good time was had by all, and their amazing singing and dancing was rewarded with a ‘making friends’ session in the playground, and much-needed drinks and cakes!

Abbeywood School

Four of our school governors at Abbeywood received long service awards in May. Paul Tanner has completed a total of 25 years as a governor of both Filton High and Abbeywood. Alison Finn, Cath Johansen and John Bailey have each completed over 10 years in their voluntary roles, with Alison and Cath having previously been parent governors at St Michael’s in Stoke Gifford.

The four governors (pictured) received their awards from Peter Murphy, Director for Children, Adults and Health at South Gloucestershire Council, at a ceremony and dinner at the Council Offices in Yate.

Charity cash all sewn up Filton Library Knitting Group presented a cheque for £200 to a representative from Paul’s Place, Chris Brooks.

A spokesperson for Filton Library Knitting Group said they were delighted to present the cheque to Paul’s Place.

She said: “Every year we select a charity to support as a way of saying thank you for the enjoyment we get out of being part of the knitting group and this year we chose Paul’s Place.

“We have a great social time knitting in the library and have made many new friends. We’re happy to welcome new people to join us, even if you just want to come along for a chat and a cup of tea, but we can also teach people how to knit.’

UWE gets the green light South Gloucestershire councillors have approved plans by the University of the West of England to redevelop its Frenchay campus, near the Filton boundary.

Councillors voted to award outline planning permission for the scheme, subject to conditions. The scheme will see the University consolidate its three campuses in South Gloucestershire on a single 136acre site serving 25,000 students of whom 3,500 would live on campus.

It will include new and refurbished academic buildings and student accommodation as well as a new public transport hub, an on-campus hotel and improved pedestrian and cycle routes through the site.

Filton residents have complained in recent weeks that the area has too many students lets, leaving homes run-down.

Celebrating police air support Guests gathered at Filton airfield to celebrate the work of the Western Counties Air Operations Unit (WCAOU).

WCAOU is a consortium comprising of Avon and Somerset and Gloucestershire Constabularies, delivering police air support to their respective communities.

WCAOU disbanded on July 3 when it joined the National Police Air Service (NPAS). This national collaboration programme has been developed to provide air support to the 43 forces at 22 bases across the country with a national, borderless air service.

Nationally it is expected to save £15 million a year from current costs. The unit at Filton Airfield has served the communities of Avon & Somerset and Gloucestershire since 1995.

Filton Airfield will remain a key site for the South West region. The Great Western Air Ambulance (GWAA) is also located at this site.

When Filton Town Council accepted my proposal, more than a year ago, to build a Community Garden on Elm Park, I knew then something special had begun.

My vision was that the garden would serve all of the community regardless of age and would also be accessible to the disabled.

The Council put 5k into the pot and agreed the location in an underused corner of the park. A committee was put together and - I would make a point here - the residents who came together and formed the Filton Community Garden Committee are an extraordinary bunch of people.

The commitment, drive, eagerness, foresight, skills and abilities were key to the success of the project. Make no mistake, without them this project would have gone nowhere fast. And so, with a year in the planning at regular meetings and much debate formulating ideas and how to achieve them, the Filton Community Garden is days from completion.

The hard landscaping is done, plants are going in and new green fingered talents in the group are coming to the fore. Whilst every committee member has contributed to the

project with different skill sets, there were two late arrivals. It would be slightly unfair to single them out but they made a big difference in the strength they lent to the heavy work.

The contribution that organisations and companies made, with donations of money, materials, machinery and people power were also vital to the garden’s success and the Committee would like to thank them all for their very generous support. And so we are now poised for the grand opening at the Filton Festival 2013 at 1pm on Elm Park.

If you don’t know already, the garden is located in the corner of Elm Park, behind the tennis courts, closest to the A4174 roundabout. Residents are invited to assemble at 12.55pm on the grass close to the Boules Court. There will be food, drink and a prize raffle draw sponsored

by Sainsbury’s on opening day The ribbon will be cut at the junction of the Tarmac path and the new garden path. We hope to see you there at the opening of YOUR new garden!

Open day in Bristol day to find out more With more foster carers urgently needed in the West Country, a local children’s charity is urging Filton people to consider a career in fostering.

The Bristol & South West branch of TACT Fostering, the UK’s largest fostering and adoption charity, is holding an open day at its Bristol office on Monday 15 July 2013 from 1pm to 6pm.

The charity is appealing to people from all backgrounds and walks of life to consider becoming foster carers and provide much needed care for vulnerable children and young people in this area. The open day will provide an opportunity for people considering fostering to talk to existing foster carers and staff at TACT Fostering.

Currently 62,000 children and young people are in foster care in the UK, while a further 9,000 are looking for foster parents.

TACT’s Area Manager, Elaine Graham explains: “There’s no such thing as an ‘ideal’ foster carer. We are interested in hearing from people from all backgrounds, especially single men and women, gay men, lesbians, couples and people from Black and Minority Ethnic communities.

“The most important thing is you have a spare bedroom and the time and energy to provide a young person with a happy, stable home environment. If this sounds like you and you feel like you may have what it takes to foster, then we’d love to hear from you.

“In particular, we need to find supportive homes for young people over 12 years old, and also for young people on remand, with physical or learning disabilities, and parent-and-child foster placements.

This year’s Southern Brooks Filton Summer courses included our Cookery and Healthy Eating course at St Andrews’ Church.

Each week our tutor worked with Sally, from the council’s Health Improvement Team, to demonstrate new healthy cooking recipes which the group then made and took home to share with family and friends. Dishes cooked ranged from healthy home made chicken strips to curries and blueberry muffins. The course also looked at nutrition, cooking on a budget, meal planning and food hygiene.

Helen Humphries, who organised the course, said: “It was a great chance for the group to learn new recipes close to home and think about future meals.”

The group really enjoyed the course and the local Community Development worker Katie Donovan presented the learners with certificates to show their achievement.

with Filton Sgt Steve Ives Last month you may have seen us out and about as part of National Bike Week.

Criminals target places where bikes are left in numbers as they think they no one will notice them – they will, as ever, take any chance they’re given.

Just the other day PCSO Soandro was on patrol and spotted a teenage boy wheeling a bike with one wheel missing along the road.

As a result we were able to return the bike to its rightful owner – who had been left with just a wheel – while the young man is on police bail pending further enquiries.

During Bike Week – and throughout the year - we work

closely with schools and colleges and other locations like shops to try to improve security and prevent thefts.

The biggest impact on this type of crime can be achieved by owners taking a few basic steps to protect their own property.

Please use a decent lock when you leave your bike anywhere, criminals will cut through cheap and thin locks easily. Check out our YouTube video Hal Grades Your Lock to see what I mean.

This month, Jackie Sims and Jane Tozer of Filton Community history explore the story of Filton’s landmark pub, once The Anchor and now the Air Balloon N

M Once a magnificent building stood on the west side of the A38 as it goes through Filton, where the Air Balloon now stands.

This was The Anchor, the largest and busiest public house in Filton, and the oldest. The Anchor was the first of three public houses to be established on the main road beside Filton House. Sarah Matthews, wife of Frederick Gayner, who came to the village in 1867, remembered the Anchor as ‘a tiny thatched public house with a horse pool in front.’

The Anchor is known to have been trading in 1751, when the parish records show the Overseer paid the landlord £1.11.4½d for ale for men repairing the road.

In 1768 the Anchor lease was up for renewal. Described as well established - ‘To let, at Old Lady Day next (6th April), a well accustomed PUBLIC HOUSE known by the sign of the Anchor situated…3½ miles from Bristol’.

There were 12 acres of pasture land to let as well. Licensees did not rely on trade for their income, the landlords were also farmers.

The Anchor sold a great deal of cider in the 18th Century.

Much of this was supplied by Church Farm, where the Gayners had a cider press. The Anchor brewed its own beer, in the brewery opposite. Many of the farmers made their own beer, and some made cider for home consumption, selling on any excess to the local pubs.

W.L.Harris was able to trace several of the licensees through the centuries, but two seem to have been outstanding. Robert Browne, ‘farmer and innkeeper’, was Landlord of the Anchor for 37 years, at this time the only inn in the village. He retired in 1824. In 1815 he occupied 36 acres of pasture and arable land belonging to the Filton House estate. He was fully part of the village, sending four of his children to be baptised at the church, and witnessing two marriages. He also served the village in administration,

collecting taxes and acting as Parish Constable and Parish Overseer at least 11 times. He died at the age of 83 and was buried in Filton churchyard in 1836.

Before 1832 William Bennett had acquired The Anchor with about 6 acres of land. A native of Somerset, Bennett lived in a

house in Church Paddock, at first renting land for farming, but later he became a considerable landowner in his own right, purchasing as many properties round his own house as he could.

These included The Rank, the Anchor and Anchor Cottage, and of course, the brewery. He also purchased two cottages

opposite the church. Three of his sons farmed in Filton. In 1832 Joseph Parker who had married Bennett’s elder daughter, became landlord of his father-in-law’s inn. This was later taken over

by Stephen Bennett who also worked the fields attached to it.

The Anchor was the last building at the southern end of what was considered the village proper, as the name of the adjacent field, Townsend, indicates. Between the Anchor and Townsend was a cart track to Westfield, a field on the Filton boundary with Westbury on Trym, now Southmead Road.

From the start, the Anchor was a good meeting place and the focal point of the village. Vestry meeting were held there rather than in the church, and it was used for parochial purposes such as the Commutation of Tythes meetings. It was used both for accommodation and for meetings and dinners. In the nineteenth and twentieth century it was a natural stop for cattle drovers on their way to auction or the slaughter house.

At a later time, it was popular with workers from the aircraft factories. One significant engineer suggested many an

engineering problem was solved over a pint in one of Filton’s hostelries.

Between 1908 and 1978 the Anchor grew with the addition of an extra bay. We are not sure when this happened but most likely it was between the two world wars.

The Anchor was pulled down in 1995 by new owners who wanted to modernise.

A new pub opened as the Mill House in 1997. It then became the Mill.

The Mill then became the Air Balloon, its current name.

St Vallier AFC win funding to achieve their goal-posts!

Filton’s St Vallier AFC has been awarded funding as part of The FA’s Youth Football goalposts initiative, which was launched in 2012 in partnership with the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.

The grant will mean that children at St Vallier AFC will now be able to play matches with goalposts that are relative to their age and size.

The Football Foundation works with The FA to provide funding towards the installation of goalposts that supports the implementation of The FA’s Youth Development Review. The new 9v9, 7v7 and 5v5 formats – played on smaller pitches with smaller goals – aim to develop more technically-gifted English players. These formats will be mandatory from next season. Extensive research has shown that the game is more

enjoyable for youngsters as they receive more touches of the ball and the game is less likely to be dominated by larger, more physical players.

The move to small-sided matches requires goals smaller than the full-size goals used at present in Under 11 football.

With a pair of goals costing on average £900, a ring-fenced funding pot of £1m was made available by the Foundation in association with The FA to support clubs and leagues taking up the new nine-a-side and smaller formats of the game – a key part of The FA’s new approach to youth football.

The first window, which closed in September, saw more than 600 clubs benefit from a total of £444,000 funding. Sir Trevor Brooking, Director of Football Development at The FA, said: “The small-sided format of the game helps youngsters to develop their touch and technique as they have more touches of the ball in a match.

“Young goalkeepers also benefit as they do not have to protect the same sized goal as a Premier League goalkeeper has to week in, week out” Ian Jones, Youth Development Coach for the club, said: The funding provided by the Football Foundation & the support from our local Gloucestershire FA has enabled us to provide our current u10 and u11 teams with the relevant sized goals required for the forthcoming season.

“Fifty percent of the funding came from the FF And a further £100 came from the GFA. “Without this funding we as a club would have struggled to purchase.

National success for Filton judo player At a recent BJC National Open Competition, an Adult Player from Pyramid Youth Club won Bronze in his weight category.

Joe Wakeham has practised Judo at the club since he was a child.

He is now a black belt and helps to instruct the younger members.

There are vacancies in the Judo Club particularly for 8-12 year olds.

There is also room in the adult group age 13+.

New members are welcome.

Thrill for Aaron as he visits Filton based air ambulance

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) were delighted to welcome a young helicopter enthusiast to their Filton base.

Aaron Accleton-Scialpi, who is six years old, is a patient at Frenchay Hospital after being involved in a car accident near Bude, North Devon. Aaron and his mother were travelling home when the car they were travelling in hit some ice and rolled over in March this year.

They were both airlifted to Derriford Hospital by Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust, but Aaron was transferred to the Barbara Russell Children’s Unit at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

He suffered a nasty head injury in the accident but following surgery he is now recovering well.

After his arrival at Frenchay Hospital, Aaron told other patients and staff how a helicopter and an air ambulance crew saved his life. With this in mind and knowing that Great Western Air Ambulance’s base in Filton was located close by, Frenchay Hospital play assistant Kate Derrick contacted the charity’s PR and Media Officer Keri Beckingham to see if it would be possible to arrange for Aaron to visit.

For those who get frustrated when their computer crashes, there is a new PC being developed that supposedly will never crash.

It is based on the randomness of nature and can recover from corrupted data.

Google Glass is currently being trialled where the

internet and other information is projected onto a pair of glasses you wear when walking around. You can appear like a genius, accessing all the information on the internet without anyone knowing!

And a quick look back to the past as we would like to tip our hats (or click our buttons) to the inventor of the mouse, Doug Engelbart, who died this week aged 88. Amazingly he invented it in the 1960s!

transferred to Frenchay Hospital via an air ambulance and as soon as he came in to the play rooms at Barbara Russell Children’s Unit he went straight to the toy helicopter and started talking about how a helicopter saved him. It is so important for children who are in hospital for long periods of time to be given opportunities like this to leave the ward for a special visit if they are well enough.

“Being outside of a hospital environment again is an important part of their recovery and rehabilitation, as well as being a fantastic treat for them.”

During their visit to the base, Aaron and his family met Critical Care Paramedic Pete Sadler, who gave them a tour and spoke to them about the work that he does.

Keri said: “On behalf of Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, we were delighted to be able to offer Aaron and his family the chance to visit our base today.”

GWAAC is currently trying to raise £250,000 of additional funds for a new Eurocopter EC 135 helicopter in order to replace the ageing Bölkow 105 model that it currently uses as part of a campaign called ‘Movin’ on Up’.

In the 25 years i have been the Rector of Filton I have, of course, witnessed any changes in the Parish.

Naturally this encompasses the local personnel as well as the physical environment in which we all live.

As many of the older people have been forced to give up their homes or have passed away, the nature of the local community has changed. The attendant growth in local employment and educational institutions, ie the relocation of the MoD and the huge development of both the university of the West of England and Filton College, has meant that the local population is also more diverse

and transient than when I first arrived in 1988.

It has to be admitted that much of the old character of Filton as a physical place has also been eroded. Everyone would have their own list of places which have subsequently disappeared or fallen into disuse. If you are an old Filtonian that list will be a long one but whatever place or building you miss most, their loss has inevitably had the effect of weakening the sense of uniqueness which the physical place of Filton has always possessed.

Put another way, the special sense of community which being a Filtonian always suggested is

more and more hard to define, though I can witness to the fact that it is far from dead yet.

Nonetheless, if Filton is to survive, it needs its people and its places.

That is why it is so good to see the New Filton house being so superbly restored, affirming the future of the aircraft industry after the unfortunate loss of the airfield.

It is also the case with the newly reprieved Conygre House, achieved by the concerted hard work of local people.

I know, having helped to establish the community cafe in the parish Church how important it is to support local people in Filton, many of

whom would feel lonely and dispossessed as they see services being withdrawn.

My own vocation, as the Rector of the Parish, is to serve, under God, the people of this place whether they be committed to their faith or not.

That goes, of course, for all my colleagues in the Christian Ministry in Filton.

We are all here to serve; it is one of the ways that this place has remained strong despite all the many changes. But we are even stronger, as the campaign to save Conygre House has proved, if we are motivated to serve one another and care for the place in which we live.

What are the main risks?

If you have a flu like illness ask ‘Could this be malaria?’ l Sexually transmitted infections can be acquired through unprotected sex.

The best way to avoid being infected is to either avoid sex altogether or use condoms every time you have sex. l Sunburn is common. Avoid the midday sun! Wear a hat!

Use sun creams with a high protection factor! l Drowning. Don’t swim alone or intoxicated. Never dive into water less than 1m or 3 feet deep. Avoid diving into water less than 2.75m or 9 feet deep. Swim where there are lifeguards. Use a life jacket when boating, or skiing, l Insect bites and the risk of catching diseases they spread malaria and yellow fever. Even in Europe there are insect borne infections such as Lyme disease, Tickborne encephalitis (TBE), and Babesiosis (transmitted by ticks), and West Nile virus (transmitted by mosquitoes).

1. Mosquitoes normally bite between dusk and dawn.

Wear loose fitting clothing that covers up skin as much as possible Wear long sleeved, long legged clothing at night, avoid dark colours.

2. Apply insect repellents to exposed skin when outdoors.

Repellents that contain diethy toluamide (DEET) DEET are the most effective.

Clothing may be treated with insecticide sprays.

3. Travellers in grassy or woodland areas should wear long trousers and tuck the legs into their socks.

4. Check clothes and skin for ticks on a regular basis. The larval form of Ixodes ticks is tiny and difficult to see.

Adult ticks, once they have fed and become engorged, may be the size of a coffee bean. Common areas for ticks to attach are at the hair-line, behind the ears, elbows, backs of knees, groin and armpits.

5. Remove ticks as soon as possible by using a pair of tweezers or tick remover.

The tweezers should be placed as close as possible to the skin and then the tick removed slowly. Care needs to be taken not to squeeze the stomach contents of the tick into the site of the bite.

6. Sleep in screened rooms or with a mosquito net.

7. Use a knockdown fly spray to kill mosquitoes that may have entered the room during the day.

8. Use anti mosquito sprays or coils in bedrooms at night A small piece of the coil lit under the table can be a deterrent when dining at outdoor restaurants 9. Insecticide-treated netting can be placed around beds Have a good holiday!

After the withdrawal of South Glos. funding to the Club we are fortunate to have been offered funding from Young Bristol and Filton Town Council which together with various other smaller donations, will help us to keep the Club open. Thanks to all organisations concerned.

Leisure and fun the theme at fabulous Holiday Inn Guildford We’ve all had that moment when we scream ... “I need a holiday - NOW” ... and you know that everything has been getting on top of you.

For most of us, our exclamation remains just that, not least because dropping everything and heading off on holiday is the stuff of soap operas. You know the scene “There’s a plane to Majorca in an hour!”

Life’s not like that but the idea of a short break with a touch of luxury is not necessarily fantasy.

And it needn’t break the bank either. For those of us with kids, of course, we need to balance our idea of luxury with the demands of the youngsters.

With all this in mind, we set off during half term to Guildford, just west of London. It may not be your first thought for a short break but in fact, the location is outstanding for families from Bristol.

Less than two hours from north Bristol, the 168-room Holiday Inn Guildford sits on a tree lined location just off the A3 and outside the centre of the attractive market town - which, by the way, is well worth a look with its nice mix of independent shops, galleries and historic sites.

We chose one of the hotel’s theme park packages which included entrance to nearby Legoland at Windsor.

But before that particular fun began, we wanted to be sure we had recharged our batteries and taken advantage of everything the hotel had to offer.

First up, after checking in to our ample sized family room, we grabbed our costumes and headed for the swimming pool and leisure club.

Children are welcomed and are even given their own special buffet with food favourites.

Children up to 18 stay free when sharing a family room and the under 12s eat free as well - a real bonus which means some of the pennies can be kept for the theme park! (Terms and conditions apply) In fact , the food was outstanding. The Best of British menu, with a series of fish dishes, steaks, gourmet burgers and numerous other tasty-sounding offerings was complemented by a comprehensive wine list.

We gave ourselves the chance to relax afterwards in the plush lounge with a coffee from the hotel’s Starbucks coffee bar although we could equally have enjoyed the bar.

In the morning, the quality continued with breakfast, setting us up for the day ahead.

We headed off to Legoland, sad to leave the Holiday Inn behind us but feeling ready to go.

Although the traffic can get busy, the hotel is close to Legoland - as well as Thorpe Park and Chessington World of adventures - and before we knew it we were enjoying the delights of the plastic brick-built park.

We no longer needed a holiday!
