Now our black waste bins could be smaller residents’ views sought Black bins for general waste could be made smaller for Filton residents - and recycling collections made weekly - under new proposals being consulted on by South Glos Council.

The council wants to minimise general waste and increase recycling to meet European targets by 2020.

Residents are being invited to respond to the consultation by February 15. It can be found at www.consultations. southglos.gov.uk/consult. ti A council spokesperson told Filtonvoice: “The management of household waste is a key service provided by the council. It helps protect the local environment. The Council’s Waste Strategy plays an important part in helping residents understand the impact of waste and how we can all work towards an environmentally sustainable future.

“Waste minimisation and prevention is our priority. An outcome of previous strategies has seen an impressive reduction of total waste by 61 percent since 2000. Despite this success there are still challenges and our waste is higher than our statistical neighbours. The new strategy outlines how we will continue to reduce waste across the region.

“Our second priority is recycling. Since we embarked on the 25 year partnership with Suez (formally SITA) we have made excellent progress in our recycling and composting performance. The refuse and recycling services have been transformed; in 2000 we collectively recycled and composted seven percent of our municipal waste, in 2014-15 this

had increased to 47.5 percent.

However this is below the European target of 50 percent by 2020 and therefore recycling continues to be an important priority.

“The last few years have seen very challenging times for the whole economy and the council has faced significant cuts. This strategy has to find ways to drive waste out of landfill, putting it to better use, without increasing overall cost. We need to treat waste as a resource to be tapped rather than a problem.

“The new proposed changes to the service intends to simplify the kerbside offering to residents.

It will encourage reuse and recycling through; increasing recycling collections to weekly and reducing the size of the black bin. These two proposals come as a package and would be delivered together.”

Filton households facing 9.7% rise in council tax precept amid ongoing build-up of reserves

Filton Town Council would need a precept increase of nearly 10% just to ‘stand still’ the last full council meeting of 2015 heard.

This would mean an increase of around £18 per year for each Band D household.

The council was told by accountant Derek Kemp that expenditure was now ‘under control’ after the authority had problems last year which meant reserves were needed to balance the books.

He said overall expenditure was projected to be up by £29,000 and income set to drop by £13,000.

Along with a drop in the government council tax support grant, this would mean the council, just to stand still, needs to raise and extra £64,000.

Mr Kemp said the council was able to budget £35,000 to rebuild reserves last year and for the forthcoming year would look to add around £47,000 to that total.

He said there were also factors outside the council’s control next year which coud lead to the precept rise such as the one per cent public sector pay settlement, living wage levels and increases in national insurance.

Mr Kemp added that income for the council was also still ‘on

the slide’ which would affect any decisions.

He said: We are now budgeting for a surplus. We scraped through last year by the skin of our teeth but by the end of the next financial year we should be halfway back to where we should be.”

Cllr Ian Scott – Deputy Finance Chair said: “I agree with the accountant that following the Tory government cut in council tax support grant this would mean the council, just to stand still, needs to raise extra money.

“We also need to increase the reserves to a sensible level.

“The £18 increase over the year works out at less than 35p per week.”

Filton primaries excel ... and St Teresa’s is top in city for progress Pupils at a primary school serving Filton made more progress last year than any other in the whole Bristol region, new figures show.

St Teresa’s Catholic Primary topped the rankings for ‘value added’ across Bristol, South Glos, North Somerset and BANES, and placed in the top 100 nationally.

The school was also in the top three performing schools in Bristol for key stage two SAT’s results, with 97% of pupils achieving at least level 4+ and 52% of pupils achieving level 5+ in reading, writing and maths.

In addition, 45% of pupils

achieved a level 6 in maths.

Level 4 is the Government’s measure of where a child, on average, is expected to reach by the end of primary school.

Filton’s other schools also did well, with Shield Road achieving 85% Level 4 and 15% Level 5.

Charborough Rd achieved 84% Level 4 and 13% Level 5 while Filton Hill scored 77% in Level 4 and 10% Level 5.

These figures do not take into account the level the child was at before coming to primary school and many factors can contribute to the overall score.

New team steps in to run doctors’ surgery after GPs leave practice

by Rebecca Day A new management team has been appointed to run Northville Family Practice in Filton.

The news has come following uncertainty over the surgery’s future, when its management team announced at the end of last year that they were resigning.

BrisDoc Healthcare Services will now take over the running of the practice for the next two years, from January 15.

It is confirmed that the three current partners, Dr Amanda Ramshaw, Dr Donna Dickens and Dr Grace Dalley, will be leaving the practice, but many of its staff will remain.

BrisDoc, a local general practitioner organisation which runs out-of-hours services, extended opening hours, and a walk-in service, was appointed

by NHS England from a pool of bidders.

It has been operating for 15 years across South Gloucestershire, Bristol, and North Somerset, and employs more than 300 staff.

BrisDoc is now recruiting a team of new GPs, and plans to run a series of open evenings at the surgery in the new year so

that patients can meet the new team.

Filton councillor Ian Scott has welcomed the NHS’s decision to consult with patients about its plans for the surgery.

He said: “I was concerned that the underlying concerns of the departing GPs need to be addressed if patients’ confidence is to return because they get used to seeing the same doctors and will find this very unsettling.

“I welcome the NHS decision to plan wider local engagement with the community on longterm plans.”

NHS England says that it is aware of the growing demand for services in Filton, particularly with thousands of new homes being planned for the area, and will work with the local community to plan for the future.

NHS England South West medical contract manager, Caroline Stead, said: “We are pleased to have an organisation with such a strong track record taking over at Northville and we are confident that patients will continue to get the same high quality services they are used to.

“We are now looking forward to talking to local people about how best to provide services to the population in the future.”

Dr Nigel Taylor, from BrisDoc, said: “We are pleased to have the opportunity run the GP medical services at the Northville Family Practice. We want the local community to benefit from a quality service staff and will be working with NHS England to continue the existing practice providing for the needs of the local people.”

‘Too many patients causing road chaos’

by Rebecca Day Parking around Northville Family Practice has been branded “ridiculous” by a local resident.

Mike Alder, pictured right, who lives in Seventh Avenue, told Filtonvoice that it was once so bad an ambulance was unable to drive down the road. He also regularly sees dustbin lorries getting stuck, he says.

Mr Alder said: “It’s just absolutely ridiculous. I have had my wall knocked about three times, people are constantly parking in front of the lane.

“The other day, there were so many cars parked at the top of the road that cars couldn’t get past. People were blowing their horns – it was chaotic.

“I think it’s because Northville Surgery has too many patients.

When the doctors’ was extended, they said they wouldn’t increase

the number of patients, but now patients are coming in from all over the place.

“I just don't know what can be done – there’s nowhere a car park can be built.”

Twists, turns and lots of laughs as ‘Players’ return for annual panto

Family favourite Rumpelstiltskin set to delight local audiences

After the success of its previous show, one of Bristol’s biggest am dram groups is all set for staging its annual pantomime – Rumpelstiltskin.

The St Andrew’s Players will be putting on the production from Wednesday, February 10th until Saturday, February 13th at 7:30pm at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Elm Park, Filton.

There will be a matinee performance on the Saturday at 2.30pm.

Directors Sue Davies and Martin Emmerson are very excited about the production, as this year the script has been especially written for the group by pantomime author Peter Bond, who wrote the script the Players used last year.

“Rumpelstiltskin is one of those pantomimes where a lot of people are familiar with the story, but there are still a few twists, turns and surprises in store,” said Lennon Rich, spokesperson for the Players.

“The show is fantastic and hilariously funny for all ages and features all the things you know and love -- handsome kings, evil witches, straw being spun into gold and the odd culinary mishap or two”.

The cast and crew have been working on the production since September and it promises to be a show you won’t want to miss!

Homes were left without water

House in Filton were left without water one day last month for around 14 hours after a burst main caused problems.

Residents on social media complained that Bristol Water failed to provide proper updates until the problem was resolved.

The following day there were more problems in nearby Stoke Gifford when planned works caused a leak and homes were again without water.

Funding fears as Filton no longer qualifies as a ‘Priority Neighbourhood’

Filton no longer qualifies as a ‘priority neighbourhood’ - raising fears that funding for vital services could be lost.

South Glos Council has yet to make a decision on formally changing the status and discussions will now take place with key partners in the area.

Town council chairman Darryl Collins, while welcoming the improvements which have led to the change in status, said he feared that some areas which have problems could see vital services lost. He said there could be concerns for youth club provision and the Sure Start parents’ facility in Conygre ward.

Other services which have resulted from the status

include the Credit Union and the domestic violence drop-in facility.

Filton’s is one of six areas in South Glos with ‘Priority Neighbourhood’ status Patchway is another.

Priority Neighbourhood Status is given in “areas where higher numbers of people don’t achieve their full potential, have poorer health outcomes, are employed in less well paid jobs or are unemployed and there are higher levels of crime.”

This might mean an area has issues in certain areas leading to the town as a whole failing to reach regional averages.

As a result of Filton’s status, work with Southern Brooks

Community Partnership in a wide range of social interventions led to improvements across the town.

A South Glos spokesperson said: “Thanks to the hard work of many, led by Southern Brooks Community Partnership who are the leaders in coordinating the programme in the area, Filton no longer meets the criteria for being a priority neighbourhood.

This is a real success story that we are aiming to repeat over time in our other priority neighbourhood areas.

“No decision has been made about whether to formally change the status of Filton as a priority neighbourhood. Any such decision would be taken by the

council along with its partners, including the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP).

“We are currently meeting with all the groups leading work in each of the priority neighbourhoods, including those who have contributed so much to improving outcomes in Filton.

“Following these discussions, we will be able to share the lessons from Filton’s success to help in other areas.

“We are assessing progress in all of our priority neighbourhoods and we will share the findings of this work with our partners. We will then work together on an updated strategy to tackle the outstanding issues in our priority neighbourhoods.”

At the last meeting of Filton Town Council, there were hopes that if the status were to be lost, it would be phased out gradually to avoid a sudden impact.

One councillor, who asked not to be named, said: “This would have a huge effect on funding.”

Filton will lose its own ‘Safer Stronger’ group in the wake of South Glos cost cutting.

The group, which currently meets four times a year to discuss matters of safety, transport and security, will now meet three times a year and be combined with Patchway.

It is understood this will mean just one or two meetings in Filton each year and decisions on chairmanship have not been made, although it is understood candidates will be invited to nominate themselves.

Filton Safer Stronger chairman Darryl Collins said it was ‘another layer of democracy destroyed’.

He said: “I can’t see how it will work geographically. If a meeting is held in Patchway, I can’t see people coming to that and they will not want to sit and listen to Patchway issues.

“We talk to Patchway and we are keen to see the aerospace sector grow but there are no connected residents’ issues.

“Our Safer Stronger is about a layer of democracy and this is being destroyed.

“I am still keen to be involved but I don’t know when all this will happen.”

The Safer Stronger meetings, which usually take place at the BAWA club, involve police, fire and council officers listening to

concerns from the public.

Priorities are identified and officers address these concerns with officers before reporting back to the next meeting.

A South Glos spokesperson said: “Earlier this year South Gloucestershire Council determined changes to its Community Engagement service in order to achieve budget reductions.

The Council decided to continue to support Safer and Stronger Community Groups (SSCGs) though the level of funding to do so has been reduced. Following discussion with key partners new proposals have been agreed which will enable us to do so.

“This does mean SSCGs will meet less often in the future, and the number of groups will reduce from 20 to 14. Some of the groups will remain unchanged and some be merged together to make new ones.

“Meetings of the new groups are now being organised, and the dates and locations of these will be provided at www.southglos. gov.uk/community-and-living/ stronger-communities/saferstronger-community-groups as soon as possible.”

Carol bus returns to bring festive cheer to residents across Filton Christmas was brightened up for the whole Filton community by the return of the much loved Carol Bus. Organisers revived the bus, which was a familiar feature in Bristol for many years, and toured across the whole of the town on a Sunday evening before Christmas.

Organisers Rachel and Steve Ashton, along with Liz Wakeman and Angela Athay-Hunt, persuaded the team behind the Collywobbles Fun Bus to take part.

The end result was delight for residents and more than £1,000 raised for good causes, with an army of around 80 volunteers involved.

A sum of £670 went to MacMillan Cancer while the Filton Community Garden received £370.

Members of the community garden committee gathered with carol bus volunteers to receive their cheque at St Andrew’s Church.

Rachel said: “I would like to thank everyone who helped, donated and joined us tonight on what was a fantastic Carol Bus comeback. It has been a dream of our crew for a long while and we are blown away by the support and generosity of the people of Filton (and other areas!)

“We hope to make this an annual event so look out for information sometime next year.”

Steve said: “We met a lot of residents, including some who were housebound so it brought a lot of festive cheer to them.”

On social media, residents were full of praise for the carol bus effort: Penny Holley: Amazing what can be done with positivity in such a short time and initiative.

Designing technology of the future Students at Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy built and operated their own mini robots at a recent “Robotics Day.” Year 10 youngsters at the academy on the Filton border spent the day thinking about robot logic, then assembled and programmed their own robots to follow a series of different paths around their classroom.

The day was hosted by John Bradford of the High Tech Bristol and Bath Community Interest Company and was supported by students at the University of the West of England, home of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory.

“Robotics will play an increasingly central role in our lives in the years to come and teaching these skills is part of our mission as a centre of excellence for STEM subjects in Bristol,” said Joe Mulligan, assistant principal at BTE Academy.

“Our Robotics Day proved to

be an interesting and exciting practical and technical challenge.

“The students responded positively to the challenges they were given and began to appreciate the complexities of robots and the level of determination and logical thought required to make

machines do what you want them to do.

“The opportunity to engage with the undergraduates at UWE and the team working aspect of the day also taught them much about working co-operatively to achieve targets.”

The BTE Academy is a UTC (University Technical College)

specialising in engineering for 14-19 year olds. The stateof-the-art academy opened in September 2013 to create a specialist technology and engineering school. The academy gives students technical knowledge and focuses on workbased skills in addition to their academic qualifications.

Orchard School Bristol

Orchard’s cross country teams deserve a big pat on the back and congratulations for finishing the area cross country trials in continuous rain and mud. They did invent a new sport of mud skating and were very pleased at not falling in front of anyone!

This year four of our runners did so well in the trials that they have been selected to represent Bristol on January 16; Rendij Kalnis, Andre Freckleton, Steen Maxwell and Liam Jordan. Liam deserves a special mention as last year he was placed at 38th, this year he came 6th and won a County place.

At the Bristol School Cross Country Event our Year 7 girls and boys team came in 5th overall with some great individual performances.

However our Year 10 and 11 boys won, beating fierce competition to put Bristol Grammar School into second place with QEH coming in third.

Abbeywood Community School

As part of the ongoing transition process from primary School to secondary school Year 6 Filton Hill pupils visited Abbeywood on the 8th December. They were able to experience what a PE lesson at Abbeywood would feel like and participated in some gymnastics activities in our fabulous Dance Studio. The pupils were fantastic, a real credit to Filton Hill and as you can see from the picture there could be some future Abbeywood gymnastics stars!

QEH Ambitions Are Out of This World Pupils from QEH have won first place in the regional heat of the UK Space Design Competition, and will now compete in the national final for the chance to represent the UK at NASA. Held in Cardiff, the UK Space Design Competition is a science and engineering challenge designed as a simulation of life in industry.

Teams are given a list of requirements for a space settlement, and have a day to come up with a detailed design which they present to a panel of judges who representatives of the UK Space Agency. QEH was represented by Andreas Richardson, Chris Hyland, Toby Speirs, George Cherry, Rory Neville, Caleb Smith, Alex James, Philip WakelySkinnarland, Hamzah Ahmed, Dominic Drake and James Palmer.

Their design was described as “intricate and technically brilliant”.

Residents and businesses unite for Christmas fun in the village

Weeks of planning culminate in festive extravaganza which is enjoyed by all

By Rebeccca Day Great festive fun and laughter was had by Cheswick residents last month at fun Christmas event.

The day was well attended by the local community and consisted of various activities and competitions, including a special Christmas trail, as well as plenty of food and drink.

Father Christmas also made an appearance, much to the children’s delight.

The event, held on December 20, took six weeks of planning, and was organised by local residents Holly Stowell, Sejal Hampson and Graeme Snell,

with the help of a team of neighbours.

Residents also collected food for the North Bristol Food Bank and gifts were donated to the Filton Children’s Centre.

Local businesses supported the occasion, with donations from Southern Cooperative, who provided the mince pies, the local housing associations, Happy Days Nursery and local building firms Taylor Wimpey, Mccarthy and Stone, and Redrow Homes.

Bradley Stoke Radio Station provided entertainment with a snow machine, and competitions were organised for residents, such as the ‘Best Decorated

Many people have different reasons for starting to exercise in the New Year, whether they are getting in shape for a holiday; planning for a wedding day, looking to improve their general health and wellbeing or to just feel better about their selves. We would like to offer a few bits of advice when it comes to starting off new.

Know your goals and set a realistic time frame to achieve them. It’s always a good idea to speak to a fitness professional so they can confirm that your time frame/goals are realistic. Please give yourself time, and don’t expect things to happen immediately. You will only end up disappointed and potentially de-motivated.

Variety. Be varied, try different things. They say variety is the spice of life so adopt this outlook into your fitness goals and you will not be disappointed.

Monitor your progress, weight isn’t everything, people! There are so many tools that can help you monitor your fitness and to give you a really good idea of how far you have progressed with your goals.

Keep a log of what you achieve!

‘Oh yes they did’ enjoy pantomime!

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it’s off to Panto Charborough Road go!

Last month, Charborough Road Primary School continued their countdown to Christmas with a fantastically festive trip to the Bristol Hippodrome for the whole school to watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarves starring CBeebies presenter Andy Day, Star Wars legend Warwick Davis and comic genius Andy Ford.

The children could hardly contain their excitement as over 300 of us piled onto four double decker buses and headed into the city centre.

The children absolutely LOVED it and gave rave reviews.

“It was so funny when Shaun the Sheep did karate moves, especially the lamb chop!” said Alex Knight, Year 2, Foxes class.

Daisy Reynolds in Year 4, Doves class said: “It was amazing when the real Professor Flitwick from Harry Potter came out in his Hogwarts robes and said ‘stupefy!’ to the evil queen.”

A huge thank you to Mrs Hawkins, the school business manager, for organising the trip and to all the parent, grandparent and staff helpers.

Friends recall Doug Daniels as bar in community association is re-named Friends and family gathered to recall the life of Councillor Doug Daniels and to re-name the bar in the community association in his memory.

The popular Northville councillor died aged 93 last year and several tributes have been organised to remember him.

As well as the bar being named ‘Doug’s Watering Hole’, the town council pavilion will be named after him and rose beds in the community garden have also been dedicated. Doug’s funeral saw people from all walks of life attend to pay respects to the exRolls-Royce chief engineer.

Among guests at the community association were his niece Penny Carpenter and stories about Doug were shared by those attending.

Minister reveals £14m boost for aerospace during Filton site tour President and Chief Executive Officer of Airbus, Fabrice Bregier, joined the Business Secretary, Sajid Javid MP at the Airbus site in Filton to announce £14 million investment into aerospace research and technology.

Two projects will go forward thanks to the joint industry and government investment, supported by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and delivered by Innovate UK, which promotes research and development into new technology for the aircraft of the future.

One project will look at the manufacturing processes for the next generation of advanced aircraft wings, aimed at speeding up production while also reducing weight and costs, while the other will focus on new aircraft fuel and inerting systems to reduce maintenance and improve environmental efficiency.

Bristol-raised Mr Javid said: “Our aerospace sector is a real success story. This highly productive industry provides highly skilled jobs and is a key part of our long-term economic growth.

“That’s why we are extending our commitment to aerospace R&D by a further £900 million over the next 10 years. With industry’s commitment to match this funding, this will result in £3.9bn investment in aerospace R&D since 2013.”

Young boxers battle it out for national champs titles Two young boxers from SGS College faced some of the country’s toughest competition at the National Boys and Girls Club Championships at the end of 2015 – with one coming away as champion.

Jacob Croot and Natalie Craig travelled to Croydon at the start of December to vie for titles, with Natalie returning to Bristol as Class C U64kg Female national champion, while Jacob narrowly missed out on victory in his match.

Jacob met Hoddeston’s multiple national champion, the hard-punching Charlie Kenny.

A range of starter desktop and laptop PCs are being made available to anyone who is on a low income, receiving certain benefits or experiencing other disadvantages.

The equipment, which is available through an IT provider is professionally refurbished, ready to use and includes a 12-month warranty.

The aim of the scheme is to help people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a PC with a view to using it to look for work or access online training and learning.

Councillor Heather Goddard, chair of the communities committee, said: “Not owning or having ready access to a computer can be an obstacle to people who are looking to find work or to acquire new skills or knowledge through online learning.

“This pilot scheme will help those unable to afford a computer through subsidised and supported assistance.”

Prices start from around £85, which includes a fully-licensed version of Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010, a 12-month warranty and free delivery.

Students’ work gets results at local woodlands

Students have helped two local woodland groups make real progress towards their goals of improving the sites and opening them up for public access since the start of the new academic year in September.

Young volunteers from the University of the West of England’s GreenSpace team have been working alongside the groups that manage Sims Hill, near the Bristol Business Park, and Spatts Abbey Wood, near the

MoD, holding regular workdays at both sites.

Those leading the projects say great progress has been made with students’ contribution, improving access and biodiversity, and they hope to continue the work and see more people from the community getting involved.

David Bell, chairman of the Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group, which also has strong links to Wallscourt Farm Academy, said: “The Splatts Abbey Wood Group is very excited with the progress that it has made in recent times and looks forward to the future with great optimism.

“The UWE GreenSpace project has been quite inspirational, with dedicated, hardworking students helping

When I first raised doing this with the UWE Volunteering Department last year I had no idea it would blossom into such a great project.”

PC Mike Steven was acknowledged for going “above and beyond” his role as an officer, and giving victims the confidence to report incidents, at Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens’ Pride Awards.

His nomination read: “The amount of work he’s put into this campaign, raising awareness and giving victims the confidence to report, on top of his role as a PC is above and beyond what is expected of him.”

PC Steven, who has been leading the ‘Police response to male rape and sexual assault’ campaign for the last 12 months, said: “It is absolutely brilliant to be recognised for my work on the male rape and sexual assault campaign and I am delighted that the PCC supports and recognises the importance of this work.”

Speaking at the awards, held at Avon and Somerset Police Headquarters in Portishead, PCC Sue Mountstevens said: “We have some truly worthy winners sitting in this room and I am humbled by your commitment and dedication to help make the communities of Avon and Somerset be safe and feel safe.

“You have been brought to my attention by residents and local people who have taken the time to contact me, wanting to recognise your efforts and highlight how you go about working tirelessly in your community for your community.

Airfield site at centre of study on cutting-edge home heat networks

Homes could benefit from cheaper fuel bills and CO2 emissions could be reduced if new development sites like Filton Airfield had a local heat network installed, according to a study.

The research, focusing on the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood where 5,700 homes are due to be built over the next 20 years, was commissioned by South Gloucestershire Council to look into the viability of using an energy centre in the middle of a large-scale housing development.

Under the scheme, instead of using electricity and gas to heat their homes individually residents’ houses are connected

to a local heat network, which delivers hot water to homes via a network of underground pipes.

Chris Sane, head of transport and strategic projects, said: “The results of the study are really encouraging for people wanting to invest in a new home which will be at the cutting edge of new technology and the way housing sites are developed over the coming years.

“Heat networks supply heat from a central source directly to homes and businesses through a network of pipes carrying hot water.

“This means that individual homes and businesses do not need to generate their own heat.”

The study investigated a

range of different sized networks, the largest of which could be expected to save 7,338 tonnes of CO2 a year (a 59 per cent reduction compared to individual gas boilers in each property).

The findings have been published at www.southglos. gov.uk/heatnetwork and also look at the possibility of creating a connection to supply electricity to The Mall shopping centre.

Councillor Matthew Riddle, leader of South Gloucestershire Council, said in light of the recent talks at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris recently, it was important the council shared the results of the study in an

attempt to help combat global warming. He said: “As a country it is estimated that we spend £32 billion a year on heating which accounts for a third of our greenhouse gases.

“In South Gloucestershire, we want to be at the forefront of developing local heat networks so that we can play our part in the move to low carbon heating and demonstrate our commitment to the environment.”

Website to beat Aztec West jams Drivers in Filton exasperated by peak-time congestion at Aztec West can now use a map-based online journey-sharing website to travel more sustainably. joinmyjourney has launched thanks to funding from South Gloucestershire Council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), development from resource efficiency specialist ecosurety, and support from North Bristol SusCom. The free-to-use site enables commuters travelling by car, bicycle or on foot to find others to share compatible journeys to work, either regularly, or as a one off.

It is initially aimed at commuters in the West of England but there are also plans to open it out to educational organisations and business centres nationally. joinmyjourney is launched first for the 8,000 people travelling to Aztec West, with other business

I’d started an off-the-shelf car share scheme for ecosurety employees, but it just didn’t have the scale, was too complex and

too limited to make a significant dent in emissions and the number of vehicles.”

Ben was bemoaning the issues to an officer at the LSTF one day and the pair agreed Aztec West needed a bespoke solution, which also appealed to walkers and cyclists. Ben took the idea back to ecosurety, and following further financial support from the LSTF and ecosurety, development started on joinmyjourney.

How joinmyjourney works Users specify the start point (via postcode) and the end point of their journey. Using an interactive map they identify potential sharers on the route, and can also specify their preferred mode (walk, cycle or car). Users then choose to message other users who most closely fit their needs, to plan their journey share, and the way can be easily amended if the default route doesn’t match the user’s preferred journey.

Benefits include fewer cars on the road, improvements in parking, lower emissions, and helping drivers save money by cutting commuting costs. The site gives commuters an option to find journey sharers ahead of 12 months of road works scheduled to start in Spring 2016 at the junction to improve traffic flow, walking and cycling routes.

Library unveils new range of autism books People in Filton living with autism or Asperger’s, or who know someone who is, will find a new range of books available at the town’s library.

The collection has been recommended by people with autism, and include information and advice, support for living well, advice for relatives and carers, plus personal stories.

Communities chair Councillor Heather Goddard said: “These

books are free to borrow for a special extended loan period of six weeks, and if the book you want is not on the shelves when you want it, the library can get hold it for you free of charge.

“Libraries provide great places for people to meet and find free entertainment as well as information.”

Feeling a little hungry now?

Well, this Pi must be the cheapest computer around.

For only about £20 you can buy yourself a complete computer. It is about the size of a large matchbox and, yes, it will do what a desktop computer will do.

It has a processor, memory and graphics card as well as a network connection.

You download an operating system onto an SD card and there you have it. You will need a screen, keyboard and mouse as well but these can be bought fairly cheaply.

You can download Linux or even a basic Windows 10 system (called IoT). And these are free! Developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a charity based at Cambridge University, it was released in 2012. There is now a Pi 2 and a Pi zero which costs an amazing £5!

What can you do? You can use it for emails and internet use. You can use it to control a robot. You can even use it as a basic NAS (network attached storage) system if you plug in an external hard drive. This means you can store all your photos and music on it to be accessible by other machines in your house.

We admit you have to be interested in computers to want to set one up, but it shows that it is possible to get a home PC for much less than a standard desktop. If you would like to hear more, please call us on 0117 969 8767 for informal, impartial technical advice and support.
