Fantastic results for Filton's Year 6 pupils Primary schools serving Filton are celebrating fantastic results in the 2018 SATs tests for Year 6 pupils. Four schools in our area Wallscourt Farm Academy in Cheswick did not have a Y6 group in 2018 - matched or exceeded the national average for reading, writing and maths. Among the highlights were Filton Hill which was 'well above average' in writing and maths
while St Teresa's was rated second highest across all Bristol City Council area primaries. At Charborough Road and Shield Road, 17% and 10% of pupils of pupils respectively achieved at a higher standard, above the national average. The percentage achieving the expected standard was: • St Teresa's: 93% • Filton Hill: 74% • Shield Rd: 70%
• Charborough Rd: 63% The figure for Charborough Rd includes pupils in their resource base with a diagnosed speech, language and/or communication need. These children make significant progress but are less likely to be high-achievers in the sense of scoring top marks in a standard SAT test. n NEWS For some time now, a new building has been emerging opposite Filton Airfield. Now all has been revealed after The Village Hotel Club opened at the heart of Bristol’s technology and business hub. Management told Filtonvoice they also hope it will be a venue of choice for local people with their large bar and restaurant. The 30th Village Hotel Club to launch in the UK, Village Bristol has 153 bedrooms connected with smart technology. Owners say the hotel will be the brand’s most high tech offering yet with every bedroom fitted with a virtual concierge, the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot. Using the Echo, hotel guests can order room service, set alarms, call room to room and pick their entertainment, all without lifting a finger. The hotel’s large state-ofthe-art gym is now open for memberships, and features an exciting new studio creates digital worlds to cycle through using a cinema-scale screen and
sound system for a completely immersive experience. Cycle fans can pedal through San Francisco, Outer Space or Whiteladies Road, or take on some of the world’s most famous courses. The spin class is one of over 100 comprehensive classes a week. The Village Gym is also home to a 20-metre indoor swimming pool and whirlpool with a luxury steam room and sauna. The hotel also offers a unique hot desking Business Club, VWorks, creating flexible and
convenient co-working spaces for both small and medium-sized businesses. Smaller meeting pods are also available to accommodate private meetings for just two to six people and can be hired for as little as an hour for impromptu get togethers and video calls. The hotel also offers large meeting spaces for up to twenty, and the Inspiration Suite is a space for large conferences and events. First match for new ladies' rugby squad A ladies' rugby club based near Cheswick enjoyed their first ever match last month. Despite the unfortunate defeat against Avonmouth, the Ashley Down Old Boys (ADOB) RFC’s ladies’ squad remained determined throughout and gave the visiting team a hard-fought game. Team captain Ellie Adam said: “I am so incredibly proud of all the ladies who pulled on the purple and white shirt. “They put all they have learned the past few months into practise and the score line really didn't reflect how good the game was or how hard the ladies fought.” Vice-captain Francesca Golton said: “ADOB Ladies went out to get that first game under their belts, build experience, set a bench mark and they certainly did that, making those who braced the cold to support the
new Lockleaze Sports Centre, based in Bonnington Walk and is held every Thursday, 8-9pm. The ladies’ next game is away at Aretians RFC on January 20, 2.30pm.

Candidate: Is Filton getting value for money? The new Conservative candidate for Filton has spoken to Filton Voice about his plans for the area. Chris Wood is standing as part of the South Gloucestershire elections for district councillors and town and parish councils, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday May 2 2019. He both lives and works in Filton, having lived in a house share on Mackie Road and worked for the MOD at Abbey Wood for the last year. Previously, Chris served as both a Hampshire County and Fareham Borough Councillor for four and a half years. Speaking of his past achievements and his future plans, Chris said: “My proudest achievement from my time as a councillor was protecting the disabled children’s short breaks programme. Councils can and should provide better value for money, but one thing I would
not countenance was reducing the services required by the most vulnerable in society.
“I am absolutely fed up with the sheer amount of litter I see every single day as I walk to

and from work, the state of the roads, the congestion, pollution and the problems we have with public transport. n NEWS by Keri Beckingham A swimming gala held in memory of a long standing coach at Filton Leisure Centre has smashed its previous fundraising target. Judith Bush was a member of Filton Leisure Centre’s teaching staff as well as a coach for Bristol Henleaze Swimming Club for many years. She had a special interest in disability swimming and became a tutor for other swim teachers to learn about the area. After sadly passing away on May 8 2017, Judith’s sons asked Claire and John, two of her friends and co-workers, to start a memorial gala for swimmers in order to honour her memory and contribution to swimming. As previously reported in Filton Voice, the first Bush Memorial Gala was held in December 2017 and raised £108 for Southmead Hospital’s ICU Department. Following this, the second gala was held at Filton Leisure Centre on Saturday November 24 from 2pm to 5pm, with the City

n NEWS of Bristol Swimming Club’s Para group as the chosen charity. During the event, swimmers from the age of four swam a multitude of strokes and distances. After the success of last year’s stage 1-9 swimming races, this years’ event held adult races for parents and staff members who also wished to take part. From entry fees, donations and a raffle run on the day, a total of £200 was raised, which will assist the City of Bristol Para Swimming Club to secure pool training time and classification based costs. Some of the club’s swimmers also joined in with races on the day and even walked away with medals, with one student in particular labelled a "legendary machine" for their participation and attitude towards the races by their peers, really incorporating the spirit of the club’s inclusive training access for all. Speaking about the gala, organisers Claire and John said: "We are so proud of all our
participants within the events and would like to thank everyone who attended, supported and donated to our total. "Special thanks go to the
Filton Leisure Centre staff for helping us to run a smooth day and to all the businesses who donated towards our raffle. We hope to see you again next year

Barber’s moustache makes a stash for A barber from Filton wants to thank local residents and businesses for supporting his annual fundraising campaign for prostate and testicular cancer. As previously reported in Filton Voice, Mario Parrinello, who runs The Filton Barbers on Gloucester Road North, has been raising funds for the Movember moustache growing charity event for the eighth year in a row. This year, as well as asking customers to donate on his Movember page, Mario also sold raffle tickets from the barber’s for £5 each. Prizes for the raffle included a year’s worth of haircuts, beauty gift sets, golf lessons, bowling and cinema tickets, restaurant vouchers and a training top signed by Bristol Rovers. During the month, Mario
also changed the look of his moustache every day using different colours and patterns such as the Italian flag, as well as Christmas decorations. In total The Filton Barber Mo Team had seven team members, including two members of staff and five customers, and managed to raise £3,070, smashing last year’s total of £215. Town council precept set to rise by £15 next year
Filton residents are facing a 7.5% increase in the town council precept - the part of council tax which pays for town council services. This will mean an increase of around £15 per year for the average household - on top of any increase by South Gloucestershire. Filton has traditionally had the highest council tax in South Glos as it has the swimming pool and sports centre to maintain. Swimming pools in other areas are run by external providers. The council has also been working over the past few years to build up reserves after budget issues in 2015 saw income fall short of anticipated levels. Next year £12,500 has been allocated to youth service FACE which has lost funding from South Glos. However the drive to build up reserves to an acceptable level has seen year-on-year increases

This year’s increase is less than 30p a week and we have budgeting to fund the excellent youth service run by FACE in Filton that has lost funding from South Gloucestershire Council." Mr Kemp was asked how much money would need to be found for a 0% increase and he replied that the council would need to find £60,000. Councillors also heard that South Gloucestershire Council have passed a lot of services down to the parish council, and it was noted that to continue these services there would need to be some kind of increase on the council tax. Councillors will confirm the increase in January.

New £32m global aerospace technology A new world-class hub for innovative aerospace technology is to open in Filton, thanks to a multi-million-pound investment from GKN Aerospace and the UK Government’s Aerospace Technology Institute. The Global Technology Centre, funded by a £17m commitment from GKN and £15m from the Government, is expected to open in 2020. The centre will be located in Filton near the Village Hotel Bristol on the A38, and will focus on additive manufacturing (AM), advanced composites, assembly and industry 4.0 processes to enable the high rate production of aircraft structures. The facility will also serve as a base for GKN Aerospace’s technology partnership in the Airbus’ “Wings of Tomorrow” technology programme as well as new additive manufacturing programmes.
Once open, the 10,000 square metre facility will host 300 highly skilled engineers, and will include collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain. The University of Bristol is one of several institutes whose researchers and PhD students will benefit from the opportunities that will emerge once the centre opens. Pro Vice Chancellor of Research, Nishan Canagarajah, said: “Bristol has worked closely with GKN Aerospace for many years and the announcement of a strategic partnership that is aligned to the Global Technology Centre is a logical next step for both organisations. Children 'not seeing' dentists by Miguel Rodriguez, Data Reporter More than 20,000 children in South Gloucestershire have not seen an NHS dentist in the last year, according to newly released figures. Figures are not avialable for Filton but the British Dental Association said the rate of check ups for children is a "national disgrace" and put it down to a lack of information to engage hard-to-reach families. NHS data shows that 43% of children in South Gloucestershire have not had a dental check-up in the 12 months to September 2018, compared with the 41% average across England. It means 25,075 children in the area have not been for their check-up over the period, despite NHS guidelines saying they should be seen at least once a year. The remaining 57% did see a
dentist during the period. Over the 12 months to June, 1,857 children received some kind of urgent dental treatment in South Gloucestershire. According to dentists, these are mainly tooth extractions or fillings. NHS dental care for children is free, but a poll conducted by the BDA last year revealed that one in four parents are unaware that there is no charge for routine check-ups for children. Among adults, 116,800 people in South Gloucestershire saw an NHS dentist in the 24 months prior to October 2018. That is 53% of the population, compared with 51% across England. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: “Last year a record 6.9 million children were seen by a dentist with numbers rising every year.�

Airbus book marks 50 years at top One of Filton's biggest aerospace companies is about to celebrate half a century of innovation with a publication commemorating its compelling history. Airbus is marking its 50 years at the forefront of the industry by partnering with London-based Urbane Publications to bring out a book in May. The renowned and awardwinning aerospace writer, Nicola Clark, is on board to author the book, providing an independent account of past half century. “Fifty years of Airbus is an appropriate milestone for reflection, gratitude and a celebration of the people, products and strategies of an ever-increasing integrated aerospace industry in Europe,” said Rainer Ohler, Head of Communications of Airbus. “This alone makes for a fascinating story. They took part in the fun games and demonstrations, and everyone was blown away – almost literally – by the paramotor, a huge fan-like machine which has broken records for taking a man thousands of feet into the air.
ur cross country runners have O been challenging themselves against Bristol’s best in recent weeks. We took Year 7 boys and Year 8 girls teams to Ashton Park for the Bristol Schools Trials. After weeks of training after school, our runners were really keen to race, many of them taking part in their first ever competitive race. It was a perfect afternoon for cross country in the excellent setting at Ashton Court,
watching balloons go up at the same time! The Year 7 boys gave their all against lots of experienced club runners and thoroughly enjoyed it, despite none of them qualifying. The more experienced Year 8 girls ran excellently, racing against Year 9 girls too, with Charlotte finishing 11th and narrowly missing out on top 10 qualifiers and Chloe also running brilliantly, finishing 21st. Well done to all our athletes!
They were also joined by an amazing robot called MIA who was there to show off not only her mathematical genius but also to explore developments in facial recognition technology. The day was also about encouraging students to understand the importance of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) and how they could help shape future careers.

Students working hard to ensure positive future for woodland The UWE Student Greenspace group has had a busy start to the 2018/19 academic year at local Stoke Gifford woodland - Splatts Abbey Wood, which is near the MoD and Chewick Village. They held a training session for new volunteers and then took part in a mid term Management Plan review with Ecologist Rupert Higgins reviewing the woodland and its future needs. The Greenspace group has been working with the Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group and South Gloucestershire Council. Senior Greenspace Project leaders Curzio Potenza and Bennta Ciu have been very active with other project leaders in organising the work schedule for the 2018/19.

The committee would like to thank all those who have done such great work at the historic woodland over many years." In 2018, the UWE Student Group GreenSpace won the prestigious South Gloucestershire Council Chair's award for their volunteering at the Splatts Abbey Wood and Sims Hill woodlands. The group wants to recruit more volunteers from the community, and is currently very keen to recruit more committee members to help strengthen the group.

Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal success The Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion has had an incredible Poppy Appeal Fortnight, raising money across the local area – Almondsbury; The Mall at Cribbs Causeway; Bradley Stoke; Patchway; Stoke Gifford and Filton. Poppy tins and poppies were put in many venues and businesses across the area, and the branch is very grateful to them for hosting the collection. Stalls were also put in Cribbs Causeway; the Willow Brook Centre, Bradley Stoke; Sainsburys, Stoke Gifford; Asda, Filton; the University of the West of England, UWE, and Bristol Parkway Station. Branch spokesman David Bell said: “The Royal British Legion

An update from Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke

Such positive energy around festive period It has been an incredibly busy time here in Filton and Bradley Stoke, as well as in parliament. The last month has seen various Christmas markets take place right across the constituency. It was a pleasure to attend fantastic Christmas events at The Edge Church, Aztec West, as well as the ‘Christmas on the Hill’ event in Staple Hill. I was particularly pleased to see such a vibrant and busy event, particularly as it fell on Small Business Saturday. It was also great to visit St Chads Primary School again to meet with staff and pupils, just a few days after a group of students visited Parliament. It was excellent to see the positive energy and enthusiasm that is clearer delivery results at a
fantastic school. I would like to thank the pupils and staff for hosting me and showing me around. I attended the South Gloucestershire Education Awards at Bristol Aerospace to celebrate the hard work and impressive achievements from our local pupils and schools. Congratulations to all the students and teachers from across the whole area who were recognised at the event. I welcome the recently announced plans from GKN Aerospace for a new £32m Global Technology Centre. Jointly funded by GKN Aerospace and the UK Government, the site will be a world-class hub for the development of the innovative technology needed for the next
generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It will ensure our region remains at the forefront of the aerospace industry and will provide a further 300 highly skilled aerospace engineering jobs. I wish everyone a wonderful 2019 and I look forward to working hard for everyone in the area in the new year.

The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea. Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association.
