Outdoor kiosk at Elm Park set to reopen AGAIN as social enterprise project The outdoor food kiosk at Elm Park, previously known as The Hatch, could reopen again this half term. It ceased trading as Elm Eats late last year just months after caterer Aaron Phillips began trading last spring when The Hatch closed. But after several months, during which local people complained that it was never open at the right time, and other issues, it closed. Now youth & community charity FACE Filton wants to open it as a social enterprise, offering training and job opportunities for vulnerable adults with learning or social disabilities. A proposal from FACE to run the facility rent free for six months was rejected by town councillors but they agreed to a three-month trial period to then be reviewed. It is now hoped it will open in time for the February half term. FACE are currently advertising for staff to get started. FACE Charity Director Debbie Teml said: "We've had the idea
of a social enterprise for a while to develop our charity's services in Filton. Our plan is to offer training which would lead to voluntary jobs then paid jobs for vulnerable adults. "We have crowdfunded and been donated some funds of around £500 to get us started and we have put in applications for external grants. We are also holding a ‘Gift Day’ on Thursday, 7th Feb 10am-2pm where people can join us at FACE for drinks, doughnuts, and give donations towards this project. "There is so much potential here and we think we can provide a great, affordable service for the weekend football trade and weekly park users as well as build skills and economic well-being for vulnerable adults. "We are not starting at the best time of year but if we can get going and make it work then hopefully it will be even better when the weather gets better." Debbie said she wanted to offer quality coffee and other drinks, soup, bacon baps, cakes and a wider menu in the summer months, including ice cream.

Now Filton could get another community garden to enhance green space reputation
Dr Jody Muelaner in the garden and opposite, the location - between 5th Avenue, Northville Rd and Filton Avenue near the Bulldog pub
Filton’s reputation as a beacon for community gardens could be enhanced if plans for a green space in Northville ward get the go-ahead. Resident Dr Jody Muelaner wants to expand the work already done in the waste land between Filton Ave, Northville Rd and Fifth Ave, behind the Bulldog pub. A group of residents have been working on the gated space for several years but now want official approval to develop the town-council-owned land. Dr Muelaner, an engineer, has formed the community garden project, while Pete Burge has been managing security, removing dumped cars and keeping gates secure. Dr Muelaner recently outlined the group’s plans to

The team has already planted a nature hedge, shrubs and a fruit orchard, as well as creating play space for children. And although the space is gated, Dr Muelaner says that, “if the project goes ahead, anyone in the community will be able to access it if they want to get involved.” He also wants to see schools get involved, as they have done at Elm Park. He told Filtonvoice: “We just want to do something good and give children a place to play. “Although we have worked on the space, we feel council approval would legitimise what we are doing. Otherwise the space is just wasted.” He said that an attempt in 2011 to take over the maintenance was rejected by the council as they were unable to balance the need for community access with security concerns.

security issues led to gating. Dr Muelaner said there is no plan to request a transfer of ownership from the council – just maintenance. He added there was a plan to hold an open day in July for Filton residents. Filton Community Garden
chairman Dave Mikkelson said: "I think it is brilliant that Jody and his group are bringing this unloved area of green space back into community use. "I hope residents get behind the scheme and support it as they have done with Filton Community Garden."

Blow for repairs as thieves target Scout hut Thieves have stolen roofing materials valued at around £600 from the 1st Filton Scout hut in Nutfield Grove. The pieces of guttering and facia were being stored outside the hut due to their size and the thieves scaled a fence to get in and remove it. The theft means essential repair work cannot now be done until funds are raised to replace the stolen items. A spokesman for the group said: "We’ve been working to improve the hut over the last few months and had some long pieces of new guttering and fascia board stored in the grounds outside the hut (it was too long to be easily stored inside). "Unfortunately at some point - we think between Christmas and New Year – it was stolen. "The guttering is quite unusual because – due to the size of the roof – it’s larger than domestic guttering.

"It might not sound much but it had cost the group £600 which is a fair amount for a charity to lose. It’s very frustrating as the essential maintenance now needs to be put on hold until we can afford to replace it. The jockey wheel for our trailer was also taken." The matter was reported to police.

'No waiting' plan to deter commuter problem Proposals for waiting restrictions have been put forward by South Glos Council in a bid to tackle ‘inconsiderate’ parking in Cheswick Village. Residents have grown increasingly frustrated over the years as their roads have become overrun with commuter parking from the Ministry of Defence and the University of the West of England. Now the council is acting to deter these issues and has proposed ‘no waiting at any time’ and ‘limited waiting’ restrictions for 11 roads. Restrictions would be implemented on bends, across pedestrian drop kerbs, and in front of off-street parking courts. Roads where waiting would be prohibited include: Barnwood, Barton Walk, Colts Ground, Cow Barton, Great Clover, Great Copsie Way, Hermitage Wood Road, Home Leas Close, Horse Leaze Road, Long Wood Road and Wider Mead.
Long Wood Road, which could be affected by the changes
Home Leas Close would also have limited waiting restrictions. Some residents have raised concerns that the restrictions would shift the problem to other parts of the village, while others have spoken in support of the scheme. South Glos councillor Trevor Jones said: “These measures, which have been fully discussed with residents, are unlikely to address all the parking concerns. South Glos councillors will
continue to discuss potential actions addressing the parking problems in joint meetings with residents and Bristol councillors” The consultation was launched on January 23 and residents have until midnight on February 18 to give their feedback about the proposals. Residents can provide their views by visiting: consultations. southglos.gov.uk and selecting the notice entitled ‘STOKE GIFFORD - CHESWICK
VILLAGE - VARIOUS ROADS - Proposed No Waiting at Any Time and Limited Waiting’. What residents say: Dave Coombes: “Generally speaking I’m happy something is being done to try and combat this, but it does leave me slightly anxious about where I’ll park our second car.” Damian Wills: “Further restrictions in Cheswick would make it a nightmare for residents and their visitors. Definitely not a good idea!” Lee Parker: “All for [it] as it is directly aimed at blind spots, junctions and narrow roads. Finally, an ambulance and fire engine will be able to get to you and save you and your family.” Ben Clark: “It’s only half a job, they are going to shift the issues from one place to another." Sejal Hampson: “It’s a shame Bristol Council have yet to sort out a sensible solution for Aurora.”

n NEWS Families can swim, keep fit and play for FREE for one day during half term at Filton Sports and Leisure Centre. The facilities at Elm Park will be opened up for everyone to enjoy on Thursday, February 21, without spending a penny. Staff want to showcase what's on offer for local people and in addition to the leisure activities there will also be some informative sessions which might be of interest to young and old. Centre manager Scott Fessey said that with there being so much competition from other centres in Bristol and South Glos, Filton Sports and Leisure Centre wanted to show off what they have got. He said: "We have so much going on during the day and there is something for everyone. "As well as keep fit, swimming fun and soft play we also have lifesaving CPR sessions, police security bike marking, representatives from the Community Garden and also Weight Watchers."

Filton Town Council has had to embark on a round of cost savings after staffing issues caused budgets to be stretched in the past few months. Sickness and maternity leave have meant that spending for the leisure centre expenditure had reached ÂŁ483, 264 after eight months of the financial year. This represents 72.6% of the annual budget - 6.6% higher than it should have been at that stage. However management have introduced a series of measures to bring the budget back in line including an overtime ban and a reduction in zero hours work. The council finance committee was told that Filton Athletic Football Club 1st team was now playing in Southmead, having moved from Elm Park, as their league rules dictated the changing rooms needed to be connected to the pitch. The meeting also heard that Cllr Rob Taylor (Lab) had resigned from the council and a new member may be co-opted before the elections in May.

Could pavement art be the solution as Filton residents are urged again to clean up after their dogs? My cat (Harvey) was very sick at Christmas and my family and I received such excellent support and medical care that our cat is now recovering. This is not the first time the staff team have showed such dedication towards our pets and I feel they should really receive the recognition they deserve. by Keri Beckingham It has long been a bone of contention for Filton residents, but now South Glos has introduced a new weapon in the fight against dog mess - street 'art'. After issues outside her house, one resident who had reported the matter to the council discovered a warning stencil had been painted on the pavement nearby. And following a spate of other incidents in Filton, residents are being urged to clean up after their dogs. In Elm Park, Mike Walker recently noticed a large amount of dog mess that had been left on the football pitches that are used

After he posted about this on the Filton News and Views Facebook group, many residents commented that they had also experienced similar problems in Filton, with Sue Packham saying that she doesn’t own a dog but now carries bags to pick up dog poo when out walking, and Elise Mynett adding: “I must have seen seven lots of dog mess on my way to take my daughter to nursery. And that’s only a ten minute walk from mine. Getting sick of having to dodge it or walking in it with my pram.” Fi Cantillon also commented on the potential health risks, as dog

n NEWS area, but since I moved back here I’ve had nothing but problems. “Recently I watched someone let their dog do their business outside my house before walking off. By the time I got to the front door they had already walked down the road, but I shouted after them that next time they should clean up after their dog. “It happens at least three or four times a week, I feel like I’m always dragging my daughter away from it. I’ve owned a dog in the past, and been in the situation where I thought I’ve had bags with me and haven’t, so have put leaves over it and then gone back to pick it up. People just don’t seem to care anymore though, they do what they want and then leave it to the next person to clean up instead.” Following the incident that Sabrina witnessed, she reported it to South Gloucestershire Council on their website, and one of their two Dog Wardens were sent out to clean it up within a couple of days. In addition, they
also put down a spray painted sign in order to deter other residents from not cleaning up after their dogs in the future. On the council’s website, they state that dog waste can be disposed of in any available litter bin or black household bin, and it is no longer necessary to separate
dog waste from other types of household waste. Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act of 1996, anyone who lets their dog foul on land open to public access and does not clear up afterwards can be given a fixed penalty notice with a £50 fine. If this is not paid within 14
days, you could be prosecuted and might be fined up to £1,000. Any residents who have concerns about dog fouling can report it on the council’s website: www.southglos.gov. uk/environment-and-planning/ street-care-and-cleaning/dogfouling-and-bins/

Filton performing arts student and friends raise nearly £2,000 for Meningitis Research The performers with Adina Monk, back row centre, and opposite page, Adina presenting the cake which was part of the raffle
A performing arts student from Filton has helped raise a huge £1,800 for Meningitis Research after a concert held before Christmas. Adina Monk, who now studies in London but is from Filton Park, organised friends who have all been part of the city's musical theatre world, as well as fellow students from college. The inspiration for the concert came after two friends died of the condition in 2016 and 2017- George Zographou (2017) and Izzy Gentry (2016), both students at St Brendan's 6th Form. At the time, Public Health England told the BBC it did not believe the two cases were linked. One performer at the concert - Millie Reynolds - herself was diagnosed with the condition but happily had successful treatment.

The audience at Filton Community Association was also told one problem facing families is that although babies now get a jab for Meningitis B, for young adults (the most at-risk group) there is a charge of over £200 for the vaccination. Other strains of meningitis have jabs available on the NHS. Adina said she wanted to hold the concert as the disease has affected many people close to her and thought a concert would be a great way to raise money for a brilliant charity. She said: "The night was excellent. I was over the moon with the amount raised for such a special charity. It was a festive social evening that has already had requests for next year!" Read all about it! Top author Peter visits Filton primary A dream came true for young readers in Year 4 at Filton Hill Primary when they were visited by author Peter Bunzl. They had started the year, reading Cogheart, by Peter, and completed a seven week unit of English work around the novel and adored every minute. They loved it so much that they begged their teacher to read them the sequel, later in the year. Mr Plummer, the Y4 teacher, said: “The children were on the edge of their seats every time I read Cogheart to them. They didn’t want it to end. I knew then that I would have to also read the sequel Moonlocket to them too! We started this in Term 3 and they are absolutely hooked.” After hearing how much the children loved the Cogheart series, Mrs Walker, the deputy head at Filton Hill, knew that she had to attempt to get Peter to visit the children.
After a few email exchanges the date was booked! She said: “The children talked of nothing else when I told them the news that Peter was coming to our school. They couldn’t wait to meet him and tell him how much they love his wonderful books. “His books have certainly promoted a ‘love of reading’ in
Year 4, which is so wonderful to witness.” Olivia Green, a Year 4 pupil said: “ I love his books so much! I never felt so excited to meet anyone in my life. Meeting Peter was amazing. I loved hearing about how he came up with the ideas for his books and asking him questions - it was a dream come true!”
Dan Jones, another pupil, said: “These are my favourite books ever. I have bought all three, so that I can read Skycircus, when we have finished Moonlocket and then I can read them all over and over again.” During the session Peter taught the children how to do a simple animation with their own pictures, which they loved. The workshop also included a brief talk from Peter about how he came up with the ideas for the Cogheart series and whether there would be a fourth book in the future. The workshop was followed by a book signing. Peter Bunzl is an award winning author who writes quirky tales about finding your place in the world and what makes you unique. His series of children’s novels The Cogheart Adventures are tales of danger and daring, catastrophes and courage set in the Victorian era.

Bar-ber shop duo hope to bring new life
Friends Jodi Bessell and Christopher Scott outside the unit in Cheswick
by Rebecca Day Meet the friends who are looking to bring a buzz to Cheswick Village’s retail square … in more ways than one. Pals for over 10 years, bartender Jodi Bessell and barber Christopher Scott, have plans to combine their professions to open ‘Besselscotts’ – a bar come barbershop – in The Square. After months of negotiations, an application has now been submitted to the council to make use of the empty unit next to the Co-op store, which would see the business split across two levels. The barbershop would operate on the mezzanine level during the day, with the bar on the ground floor, open from late morning through to the evening. Subject to the application being approved, the pair hope to launch their new venture by the summer.

to Cheswick Village Square Jodi, who lives in Cheswick Village and has worked in bars across Bristol, said: “Alongside Christopher's expertise as a barber, we're hoping to bring a whole new experience to The Square. “We know quite a few barbers which offer alcoholic drinks to their customers, but nobody – as far as we’re aware – has put a barbershop in a bar. “Rather than our customers having to sit on a bench and wait in line, customers will be able to enjoy a drink in the bar while they wait for their name to be called out. “In the evening, we want it to be a place where friends and couples can come and enjoy a few drinks after dinner.” The bar would serve a range of beers, wines, cocktails and spirits and host occasional acoustic and open mic nights.
QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS
The barbers would be open from 9am until early evening, while the bar would be open from 11am until 11pm Monday to Saturday and until 10pm on Sunday. Speaking to the Filtonvoice, Jodi says that he is mindful of residents and understands that the plans might not please everyone. He added: “All the feedback we have received so far has been positive. We want residents to know that we’re not a big chain, we’re local people and we really want this to be somewhere that brings the community together." As previously reported in the Filtonvoice, residents have been crying out for units in The Square to be filled, with some claiming that high rental prices are driving businesses away. A pub was one of the suggestions that came from residents to help revive the area.

www.filtonvoice.co.uk
Jodi said: “The Square has so much potential, and it could be a really thriving place. It’s quite depressing walking past all the empty units.” South Glos Conservative candidate for Cheswick Village and Stoke Park George Maggs said: "It is great news that Jodi, a local businessman with past experience managing pubs and bars, is seeking planning permission to turn one of the empty units on Cheswick Square into a Bar. Several units have remained empty since they were built - becoming a constant bugbear for Cheswick residents. "Hopefully residents will see further applications soon. "Whilst I understand that residents may have some concerns relating to licencing hours and parking, I would hope that, with the help of Parish Councillors, these obstacles may be mitigated in due course."
MP's surprise From Page 1 reported as warning the public not to believe the “madness” of Brexiteers seeking to play down the threat to hundreds of thousands of jobs from the UK crashing out of the EU. Airbus employs 3,000 people in Filton. Mr Lopresti, who supports Brexit and backed Prime Minister Teresa May's deal, said: "I was surprised to see this statement because Sky News reported similar last week and Airbus subsequently denied it. As such I would welcome Airbus clarifying their position. "Having received kind invitations to visit other companies there is great cause for optimism. "Titans of the aerospace industry such as GKN and Rolls Royce have recognised this and their plans for further investment in the area are a financial vote of confidence in the continued successes of Great Britain."

Air ambulance lands deal on new base The local air ambulance charity for Bristol has announced that they have reached their fundraising target and completed on the purchase of their new air base in Almondsbury, moving from Filton. Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) launched a capital appeal in July 2018 in order to raise the additional £1.2 million they needed to top up funds from their reserves and make the purchase. Thanks to the generous support of the local community and their supporters, the charity has exceeded their target, raising £1.3 million in cash and pledges to go towards the final purchase and kit out costs. The charity provides a critical care and air ambulance service for 2.1 million people across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, North Somerset and surrounding areas, and needs to raise over £3 million each year to stay operational as they receive no day-to-day funding from the Government or National Lottery. Each GWAAC Critical Care Team consists of a highly trained and experienced pilot, specialist paramedic and critical care doctor. From emergency blood transfusions to roadside amputations or treating cardiac arrests, they specialise in prehospital emergency medicine and trauma medicine, bringing the skill and expertise of an Emergency Department to the patient. The charity’s old air base in Filton was over 100 years old, dating back to before the First World War. It was no longer fit for purpose as it was cold, leaked, and no longer provided an adequate environment for the level of training and work of GWAAC’s crew.
After a long process where many different sites were surveyed, the new site in Almondsbury was chosen and planning permission was granted in late 2016. Building work started in November 2017, and the charity’s first operational day was October 2017. The new air base has been built with the crew and their life-saving work in mind, as there is a dedicated training room, and quiet room to unwind and de-brief after a difficult incident, a state of the art kitchen and storage facilities. A meeting room is also available for charity staff and there is an area that can be used for meeting former patients, many of whom come back with their families to meet the crew who saved their life. In addition, the new air base is conveniently situated close to the M5 and M4 and major routes across the region, meaning the charity’s critical care cars can quickly get to the scene of an incident, and owning the new base adds stability to the service and means that they can continue to provide their life-saving work for the community long into the future. Speaking of the purchase, GWAAC chief executive Anna Perry said: “We are thrilled to have completed the purchase of our new air base in Almondsbury. This is a purpose
Great Western Air Ambulance Charity’s new base in Almondsbury
built facility which provides our crew, who work on the cutting edge of pre-hospital emergency care, with all the facilities they require. Owning this air base also provides stability to our service and ensures we can continue to provide our life-saving service long into the future. It’s thanks to the generous donations of you, our supporters, across our region that we are able to take this monumental step forward.”
GWAAC lead paramedic John Wood added: “Moving into the new air base at Almondsbury and buying the facility has had a hugely positive impact on the team. We are now operating from a base that is fit for the cutting edge work we do. We’d like to thank all our supporters for making this possible.” GWAAC attended to 1,887 incidents last year across the counties they serve. Over 65% of missions in 2018 were carried out in one of GWAAC’s critical care cars, as if an incident happens within a short distance of the air base, it’s quicker and more cost-effective to attend in one of the cars. In addition, as the helicopter can only fly during daylight hours, the cars are critical to incidents that happen at night time. Listed hangar to be restored with £500k grant Thanks to a Biffa Award grant of £547,277, Aerospace Bristol will restore a 103-year-old hangar, making it publicly accessible for the first time. Visitors to Aerospace Bristol will soon be able to enjoy live conservation work taking place on historic Bristol aircraft such as the Bristol Freighter, Fighter, and Bolingbroke. ‘Hangar 16M’, a 103-yearold grade-II listed building on the historic Filton Airfield, is to be restored and repurposed as a Conservation in Action workshop. Restoration of the hangar – which, until recently, was home to the GWAAC air ambulance helicopter - has been made possible by Biffa Award: a multimillion-pound fund that helps to transform lives through awarding grants to communities and environmental projects across the UK.
Lloyd Burnell, Executive Director of Aerospace Bristol, said: “This fantastic grant from Biffa Award has given us the opportunity to repurpose the building to become an exciting new part of the visitor experience, engaging visitors with engineering marvels from
£10
our aerospace heritage, offering exciting hands-on learning opportunities and stories to inspire future generations. “Most museum conservation work is undertaken behind ‘closed doors’, unseen by the public. But as a result of bringing conservation into public view,
visitors will not only learn more about the Aerospace Bristol story, but also how vital heritage skills are saving the nation’s past.” Aircraft and engine restoration works will be undertaken by volunteers, who have already played a pivotal role in making Aerospace Bristol a reality. Over 150 former engineers and community volunteers spent thousands of hours restoring objects that are now on display at Aerospace Bristol, which opened to the public in October 2017. The new facility and Conservation in Action project will allow many of these volunteers, and new members of the volunteer team, to put their skills to good use and share their knowledge with a new generation of engineers and innovators. Further fly-tipping concerns as issue by Keri Beckingham Fly-tipping is continuing to cause issues for residents living in an area of Filton. As previously reported in the September 2018 edition of Filton Voice, a resident made contact to say that although fly-tipping in a lane behind Filton Avenue and the Mortimer Road cul-desac has been problematic since they moved to the area over 30 years ago, the issue has got progressively worse over the last year. The idea of installing gates to prevent fly tipping in the lane between Station Road and Nutfield Road has been discussed with South Gloucestershire Council, but as this road is currently unadopted, it requires the majority of households to agree to the gates and provide a monetary contribution towards the installation and purchase of keys.
Following our previous report, local councillors and residents have been working together to pay for gates to be erected at either end of the lane. Once these are in place, the council will then remove the fly tipping as a one-off. Commenting on the work that has been done so far, Adam Monk, Labour Councillor for Filton Ward said: “Councillor Roger Hutchinson has worked hard with residents and council officers to try to find a solution to the problem. "The problem for the council is that it is not a public right of way, nor have they managed to find any evidence as to the antisocial people who have tipped the rubbish. “Homeowners have been working hard to secure enough money collectively to secure locked gates at either end of the lane and as a goodwill gesture the

e is ‘getting worse’ this to help bring this scheme to a successful conclusion. Another £800 is needed to secure the gating and then this appalling eyesore and shocking inconvenience to residents could be gone.” A local resident, who did not wish to be named, also added: “Just over half the residents have contributed but we are therefore not quite there. The developer who owns land at the Station Road end is contributing half the cost of the gating and we are trying to get a cheaper quote. “It takes time to get something like this concluded but I am confident we will succeed.” Chris Wood, local resident and Conservative candidate for Filton, recently contacted Filton Voice after noticing that tyres, mattresses and even a bath had been dumped along the access road on his way to work.
Following this, he invited local MP Jack Lopresti to see the issue for himself. Chris said: “When I walk to work from my house in Mackie Road to the MOD I see bottles, crisp packets, cans and fast food containers among a host of other items which could actually be recycled or at the very least disposed of properly. “The fly-tipping off Station Road is on a whole other level, it’s entirely unacceptable and I am pleased that local residents are fighting back and that a solution appears to be in sight.” If you live in the area and would like to join other residents in securing agreement for the gates to be installed, please send your contact details to roger.hutchinson@southglos. gov.uk or 07875 158423 and these will be passed on to those already planning to sort out the problem.

Tributes paid to community friend Howard There was sadness in the Filton community following the death of a very popular and long-time resident. Howard Bowker passed away suddenly over the weekend of 18 August. Howard will be remembered for many reasons - many years as Treasurer of Charborough Road Friends of School, a supporter of the Community Garden, a regular attendee at council meetings (where he often had wise words to say), an avid pub quizzer, a huge rugby fan and a former player. Not least, he was an enthusiastic, witty and intelligent contributor to debate on local issues, often bringing a sense of perspective when things threatened to get out of hand. Above all, he was a lovely, kind guy and a loyal friend who was interested in others and always had a kind word. The entire community will miss him.

Orchard School’s Kacper joins premier league team Less than two years ago Kacper Lopata was playing on Orchard School’s astroturf – today he’s rubbing shoulders with stars of the Premier League as a professional with Brighton and Hove Albion. The 17-year-old, who lived in Horfield and has now relocated to the south coast, says much of his success is down to the inspiration of the PE staff at Orchard. And he has thanked them for being tough with him when he was keen to return too early from a knee injury. On reflection he says he now knows they were only looking out for the best for him. He now trains in Brighton with the Premier League team,
rubbing shoulders with the top stars while playing for the U18 side as well as for Poland’s U18s. Kacper has always played football, as a young boy in Poland before moving to the UK. He said: “I always played football, ever since I can remember. I played a lot in Poland with my older brother Kuba, just on the street or wherever we could really. “But I started taking football seriously when I was in Year 7. A lot of that was due to the fact that there was a school football team that I wanted be a part of. “I ended up playing as a goalkeeper only because I thought that that was the only position that I have a chance to actually play in as boys in other

Kacper with his family as he signs for Brighton & Hove Albion positions were better than me. “On certain days, Bristol City community would come in and we would play football for an hour or so after school for those who wanted to come. But other than that I just played on my own wherever I could for hours every day.” He is full of praise for the teachers at Orchard, not just in PE but others who were influential. He said: “There were a lot
of teachers that I looked up to like Mr Grafton or the PE staff because of how they carried themselves but a big one was Mr Coxon. No one would have known this but I always though that he’s just so influential.” He also has a message for the PE staff when he experienced one of the lowest points in his career so far – being released by Yeovil after a knee injury. “That was up there with the toughest things I’ve ever gone
through. Getting released feels like the end of the world for a boy that wants to be a footballer and on top of that being injured for a year. “It was a nightmare especially because my knee injury was so strange that sometimes It didn’t cause me any pain and sometimes it did. “Now I know that if I carried on playing with it I would have been out for a very long time. I remember many arguments with the PE staff as they were telling me that I can’t do PE even if I think I can and I’ve got to thank them for that.” He also has fond memories of being introduced to handball by Mr Pitt which could have led to him going down a different sporting route. Kacper was spotted during pre-season trials, with the help of SGS college coach David

Hockaday. At one stage it looked like it could he could be heading for Bristol City or Spurs but his agent told him Brighton were keen and before long he was signing his first professional contract. He said he still can’t quite believe it but, despite missing his family, has settled in well with the South Coast team. Orchard School head of sport Miss PembertonHeard said: “Kacper was always passionate about football. He would have stayed on the astro all day if he could. “He has worked hard, and shown true Orchard values in his determination and resilience. We were so happy when he emailed to say that he had signed for Brighton. It's great that he remembers his time with us so fondly."

Tamzin scoops £5,000 after test drive at local garage
A car garage near Filton is delighted to announce that one of its lucky customers has won Motorline’s national competition to win £5000. Tamzin Storey, a district nurse from Holt today drives away with a cheque after being entered into the Motorline prize draw when she took an approved used Toyota Yaris for a test-drive at the Motorline Toyota Bristol North showroom. The competition ran nationwide, across the Group’s 18 Toyota and Lexus centres with 3,243 test drivers in the running. Not only did Tamzin buy the Toyota Yaris she took for a spin, but she’s now returned to the Bristol North showroom where she was greeted by centre manager Paul Hatch who presented a cheque for £5000. Tamzin said: “It was great to be entered into the competition,
but I never thought I was going to win. "It’s quite daunting buying a new car, especially as driving from patient to patient is a critical part of my work, but the guys here at Motorline Toyota Bristol North made the experience very enjoyable. I’m hoping to buy a piano and take up playing again.” Tamzin, 31, a district nurse, works across the west region to offer care at home. Paul, who presented Tamzin with the cheque, commented, “This prize couldn’t have gone to a more deserving winner. Tamzin is a really lovely person who works so hard travelling around visiting her patients. We’re so happy here at the centre to be able to give her this prize.” The Motorline Toyota Bristol North centre is on Gloucester Road.

There Asda be a better way for less fortunate... A national foodbank challenge started by members of the travelling community arrived at Asda in Filton. Travellers across the country filled shopping trolleys with food and gifts to donate to the less fortunate this Christmas. The viral challenge was started by Watson Harrop from Bishop Auckland, who initiated the scheme after noticing the Foodbank donation basket at his local supermarket was always empty when he visited. He filmed himself filling a trolley full of food to donate to the Foodbank, nominating Facebook friends to take up

the challenge using the hashtag #foodbanknomination. Asda Filton’s Community Champion David Thomas said: “I happened to glance across to our Foodbank trolley as I was leaving the store on my way to a meeting in the community when
I noticed there were just a few items in it. “Imagine my surprise when I returned a couple of hours later to find not only that trolley full of food, but a further four trolleys full of food too.” A total of 12 trolleys full of
food were donated to Asda’s Filton store and it was all given to North Bristol Foodbank for distribution to its outlets in Filton, Horfield, Lockleaze, Southmead and Patchway, ensuring that local people benefit.

Success for Ladies in first away game Ashley Down Old Boys (ADOB) Ladies’ rugby team are celebrating a fantastic 22-10 win after their first away fixture at Aretians RFC in Little Stoke. It was the second game for the squad, which only formed in September last year. Over a month since their inaugural match against Avonmouth, Ashley Down arrived in their purple and white kit at Aretians on January 20, ready to play with a 21-strong team. From the first whistle, Ashley Down began shutting down the home side with quick tackles, holding them back until an eventual turnover resulted in Ashley Down’s first ever try scored by forward Sophie Milanes. After a relocation and some down time following injuries on both sides, the two squads came out of the gates for more.
Both teams were hungry to build on their points – the Aretians were quick to ship the ball out wide to their winger and put the ball down in the corner to get some points on the board. Ashley Down held strong in the scrums and put pressure on in the lineout, creating great opportunities and allowing a team try to be battled down by captain Ellie Adams and Ashley Down debutante Charlotte
Besant. The game continued, hard fought by all on the pitch with Aretians coming back to once again equalise. Following a third try for Ashley Down, secured by Charlotte Williams, the purple and whites dug deep to maintain the positive momentum. Hard lines were run by the Ashley Down forwards, offloading and supporting each other, culminating in a
ground-gaining run from flanker Chelsea Duddridge, who set up the second consecutive try by Charlotte Williams. The match finished with a 2210 win to Ashley Down with four tries (one converted) and was a hard-fought battle with injuries on both sides. Ashley Down would like to thank Aretians for the game and wish those injured a speedy recovery. They would also like to thank those that supported the game and team sponsors Majorlift Hydraulic Equipment, Curo and K Lashes and Beauty. ADOB ladies is still looking for sponsors - get in touch on Facebook ‘Ashley Down Old Boys Ladies Rugby club’ or by email, ellieroseadams98@gmail.com. If you want to give rugby a try, training takes place at the new Lockleaze Sports Centre, based in Bonnington Walk, every Thursday night from 8 to 9pm.

An update from Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke
n YOUR MP writes for the Voice
Royal Mail really delivered over festive period Just before Christmas I was delighted to visit the Royal Mail Sorting Office near Filton, where they were working hard to handle the Christmas peak of six million cards, letters and parcels throughout the Christmas period. Everyone working for the Royal Mail delivers a vital service for everyone ensuring that we all receive our much wanted Christmas post. It was also great to meet with Rob Patterson, the site manager, to receive an update on a multi-million-pound investment in the facility over the next year that will ensure local jobs, as well as continuing to provide great service for our area. I was extremely pleased about the recent government announcement that funding for the police will increase by up to £970 million next year, which is the biggest increase since 2010. I met with The Rt Hon Sajid
Javid MP, the Home Secretary, to discuss what these increases will mean for our area. Local police funding will be increased by 7.5%, meaning Avon and Somerset Constabulary could receive over £21m in the next financial year.
Furthermore, the Home Office has also commitment to fighting serious and organised crime, including economic crime and drug trafficking, with a £90 million investment in national, regional and local capabilities. This increased funding, alongside
other measures, will help ensure that police have the powers and resources needed to keep our communities safe. It is great that the m1 Metrobus route finally began operations at the start of January. It offers a much needed link between Bradley Stoke and the city centre, with regular services that cut journey times into the city centre. The m1 runs from Cribbs Causeway, stopping in Bradley Stoke, Stoke Gifford and at UWE before heading into the city centre. If you would like to discuss anything with me, be it as a resident, an organisation or business, please contact my constituency office in Bradley stoke on 01454 617783, or email me on jack.lopresti.mp@ parliament.uk.
