Filton to lose South Glos councillor
Filton will have just two councillors on South Glos Council after the next election, following a review by the Boundary Commission. The review, which will see the council have nine fewer councillors overall, took into account likely population projections by 2023. Development on the Filton Airfield and surrounding areas will see a new ward called Charlton & Cribbs, which will have three councillors, while Patchway will be reduced to one. The changes mean at least one of Filton's current Labour councillors - Ian Scott, Roger Hutchinson and Adam Monk will no longer represent Filton. Local political parties will be asked to put up a maximum of two candidates for the election. Filton Town Council is unaffected by the changes. South Gloucestershire will have 28 wards, seven fewer than there are now. In a report by the commission, they said: "The Council submitted electorate forecasts for 2023, a period five years on from the scheduled publication of our final recommendations in 2018. "These forecasts were broken down to polling district level and predicted an increase in

Filton Town Council vice chair Jo Ward has resigned, creating a vacancy. Ms Ward, who represented Northville, led the fight to save Filton Library when it came under threat due to cost cuts. She was elected to the council ion 2016 following the death of Cllr Doug Daniels. She told Filtonvoice that a combination of a new job, studying and family commitments led to her making the decision to stand down.

n NEW BINS SYSTEM FOR FILTON - 3-PAGE REPORT
What a load of rubbish (but less than it used to be)
The rollout of 106,000 140 litre bins to residents across South Gloucestershire has begun. The new bins replace the current 240 litre black wheeled bins used for non-recyclable waste. Around half, 52 per cent, of the household waste in refuse bins could be recycled and the introduction of these smaller bins is one of a number of measures introduced to reduce the amount of recyclable waste which ends up in the black bins. As well as the 140 litre bins which residents will start to receive over the next three months, South Glos also introduced weekly kerbside recycling collections last June along with a simpler sorting system so that residents can easily recycle their waste. Officers say the combined effect is that people don’t have to store as much recyclable material between collections, and the financial cost of disposing the black bin waste is reduced.

Every year there is an analysis of the contents of the black bin and we have seen a consistent trend in recent years of the bins containing recyclable material. In 2014, 52 percent of the contents could have been recycled using the existing kerbside service.

Charity appeal: Marie Curie is appealing for people in Filton to ‘get behind the daffodil’, by volunteering to collect donations for the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal this February and March. The charity needs volunteers to encourage people in the local community to give a donation and wear a daffodil pin. The money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones at home in Bristol. New community Thanks to a grant awarded by Andrews Charitable Trust (ACT), a new community project is being set up in Filton and will be available for all to use from May 2018. The Listening Ear Project seeks to address some of the gaps left by cuts in society by bringing free supportive listening services to those in and around Filton. Working in collaboration, St Peter’s Church and Network Counselling & Training are seeking to provide a safe environment into which individuals from all backgrounds, religions and races can seek support for various issues and where necessary be signposted to an appropriate agency or charity which can offer a more specialised service. The £2,000 grant from ACT will allow The Listening Ear Project to train a total of 36 volunteers, in three blocks of 12 over the next 18 months. David Westgate, Group Chief Executive of Andrews Property Group and a Trustee of ACT, comments: “When selecting which projects should receive these grants, the team at ACT looks for those which demonstrate creative and innovative ways of reaching the most vulnerable in society, as well as those with an inspirational and passionate project leader. A NEW COMMUNITY PROJECT IN FILTON IS RECRUITING Could you offer listening support to those in need in your community? The Listening Ear Project is looking for 12 volunteers to be trained in pastoral listening services with the aim of providing a supportive place for individuals struggling with a range of issues. These may include loneliness, financial concerns, unemployment, health concerns, identity, families, abuse, substance misuse and much more. The service will run from St Peter’s Church Coffee Shop, Monday to Friday 11.30am 1.30pm. The time requirement for volunteers will be approximately 4 hours a month. Ideally, volunteers for this service will be non-judgemental, have an ability to listen well without necessarily offering advice, enjoy working with people and want to give something back to their community. Filton stores targeted by robbers again Filton convenience stores have again been attacked by armed robbers - following two serious incidents late last year. Police have issued CCTV images of a man we want to identify following an armed robbery at the Spar store on Filton Avenue. And there is an appeal for information and witnesses after a robbery at McColls, again in Filton Avenue. In the Spar incident, a man wearing dark clothing and a balaclava went into the store at about 9.50pm on Sunday, January 21, and threatened a member of staff with what appeared to be a firearm. No one was hurt during this incident and the offender escaped with a small quantity of money, heading in the direction of Filton. The offender had very blue eyes, was 5ft 8ins, around 30
years old and wearing green trousers and a black padded jacket, which was muddy. If you saw any part of this incident, or have information on who this man is, please call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5218015530. The McColls incident happened on Sunday, January 14, just after 6pm. Two men entered the shop threatened two staff members and stole £200 in cash and cigarettes. The men were wearing dark clothing with face coverings. If anyone recognises the men pictured, or you have any information that could help, please call 101, quoting reference number 5218010027 and ask to speak to North East investigations. Last year a man was jailed for more than four years after admitting a robbery at the Spar shop.

Staff were left terrified after Marc Coles of Southmead entered just before 7.30am on Monday 2 October. He had his face covered and was brandishing a small axe, which he used to prise open the tills before making off with cash. He later appeared before Bristol Crown Court on Monday 6 November and His Honour Judge Picton sentenced Coles to 56 months in prison for the robbery. He was given an additional eight weeks for breaching a suspended sentence he was given in September, bringing the total jail term to four years and 10 months. Sentencing, HHJ Picton said the offence had left the victims’ confidence affected by the trauma it caused. In October, four men with baseball bats took cash and cigarettes during a robbery at Co-op in Filton Avenue.

South Glos Council is considering banning vehicles waiting at any time near junctions of Blenheim Drive, Bridgman Grove, Bude Road, Canberra Grove, Conygre Grove, Conygre Road, Holmdale Road, Lower House Crescent and Sandown Road, Filton. A spokesman said the plan is intended to prevent vehicles obstructing the junctions and access roads without adversely affecting the local residents. According to a consultation which runs until February 9, the demand for on-street parking and associated obstructive parking is causing access and visibility difficulties. The consultation can be viewed at www.southglos.gov. uk/consultation. There would be exemptions for: any vehicle to wait for the purpose of boarding or alighting; loading or unloading goods; delivering postal packets; maintenance of the road; supply of gas, water or electricity; the pursuance of statutory powers or duties; taking in petrol, oil, water or air from any garage; weddings or funerals; and in accordance with the current provisions for vehicles displaying a disabled person's badge. n NEWS In 2017 St. Peter's Ladies Group raised the sum of £1,164 for "Blood Bikes" their charity for the year. Blood Bikers offer a free courier service mostly in the evenings and weekends, carrying blood, diagnostic specimens, notes, x-rays, scans and other medical equipment between hospitals and from hospitals to patients, when NHS transport is not available. Blood Bikes is run and funded entirely by volunteers. In our area they cover Bristol, Bath, and parts of South Gloucestershire, East Wiltshire and North Somerset. All bikes are coloured bright yellow and orange and are equipped with blue lights and sirens. And all bikers have advanced training qualifications. 'Taking litter problem into our own hands' by Jess Monk Friends of the Millennium Green are holding a community litter pick up on Saturday, February 17 and would greatly appreciate if anyone from the Filton community would come along and help. The event will start at around 10am at Filton Millennium Green, which is accessible from Northville Road, Gayner Road, and Pine Grove. People can start picking litter at any time that suits them, but event organiser Nigel de Bray, pictured, will be at the top of the access way from Northville Road by 10am with all the equipment needed for the pick-up. Grabbers, litter bags and hoops will all be provided. Efforts will be greatly appreciated. Nigel says: “I’ve been trying to persuade the council to do something like this for years but I’m taking it into my own hands.
"Hopefully the community can come together and we can clean our green space. And hopefully this can turn into something wider, managing the green year round. I’ve had
suggestions of bird boxes and wildlife gardens.” Deb Farrell who regularly walks her dogs on the field, said: “It’s disgraceful the amount of stuff that gets dumped. There’s
not enough bins. It’s one of the only green spaces in Filton and it’s a shame.” Anyone willing to come along and help on the Saturday will be made welcome.

Local views sought on area’s health proposals LOCAL people have been given the chance to give their views about the way certain health services are delivered. Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) started the consultation late last month. Members of the public, patients, community groups, GPs and health partners now have the opportunity to comment on possible changes to prescribing gluten-free products, delivery of homeopathy services and changes to criteria covering breast reconstruction after cancer surgery. “We believe these proposed policies reflect previous consultation exercises as well as further guidance from stakeholders, NHS England, the Department
of Health and clinicians,” said Dr Peter Brindle, Medical Director of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire CCGs. “No decisions will be made until the consultation has ended and the results analysed.” The CCGs have responded to feedback from a consultation exercise last summer on breast reconstruction after cancer surgery to include criteria for the rebalancing of the unaffected breast. The proposals include a review of NHS funded homeopathy across the area and the removal of gluten-free products from the list of prescriptions for patients in Bristol aged 18 and over. Under the gluten-free proposal, GPs would still retain clinical discretion where it was felt necessary and have a limited

New name is barking up the right tree ONE OF Bristol’s oldest charities has decided on a new identity. The Bristol Dogs and Cats Home to be renamed Bristol ARC – standing for Animal Rescue Centre. The charity will remain linked to the RSPCA. Its bosses believe the move is necessary because, even though almost every Bristolian knows about “the Dogs Home”, not enough people know all that the charity does or where it is. “People talk about the Dogs Home but that’s only half the story,” Victoria Chester, the chief executive of the newly-named Bristol ARC, told the Voice. Market research showed that a surprising number of people in Bristol didn’t know where the charity was, what it did or who was responsible for running it. The Bristol ARC name is “one distinctive Bristol brand that
we hope will help us speak even more clearly for the animals of our city and those who care for them” said Ms Chester. “We need to stand up and we need to stand out as Bristol’s oldest animal welfare charity.” “Some things won’t change, namely our care for the animals that come to us and our support for animal welfare.” The charity is one of the oldest in the country, founded in 1887 after a Bristol man, Edward Parker, found a puppy lost in a snowstorm and realised there was nobody who would care for it. The services at the ARC, which is in Albert Road, St Philips, will remain exactly as before. The home has around 20 rescued dogs and about six cats available for rehoming at any time, as well as a department

'Sums and scrums' ... it all adds up for pupils Bristol Rugby Community Foundation selected Charborough Road Primary to be involved in rolling-out its exciting new 'Sums and Scrums' programme in January. Sums and Scrums is a new rugby-themed numeracy programme using sport to help engage young people in maths. Programme manager, Sammy Knighton said: “We look at different scoring methods in rugby and the maths related to adding those scores up. We also use league tables to engage the children, and using maths skills to design a rugby stadium. "From our perspective, sport (and in particular, rugby!) is a really effective way to engage children that perhaps struggle to get excited about maths. "This programme shows them how important maths is in everyday life, but in a fun way, so they engage fully." Headteacher Nicola Bailey
said: “The children really enjoyed engaging with their learning in a slightly more unconventional way. Our most recent Ofsted inspection noted that teachers’

Year 8 student speaks out to back Pilning station ANYONE who has addressed an audience will know that public speaking takes a great deal of courage and confidence. And one Orchard School Bristol student showed just that when he spoke in front of a large number of South Gloucestershire councillors and members of the public at a recent full council meeting. Craig Newell, Year 8, spoke passionately and eloquently about why Great Western Railway should be increasing the number of services at Pilning station on a Saturday. The train calls at the station twice every Saturday, en route from Cardiff to Bristol Temple Meads. The station is located on the line between Severn Tunnel Junction and Patchway. Craig, who is part of the Pilning station campaign group, says that there has been a 500%
increase in users of Pilning station since 2015/16. The group is also calling for the reintroduction of the station’s footbridge, which was taken down last year, improved bus services to the station, and better platform lighting. Craig, who is interested in travel and transport, became involved in campaigning for Pilning station when he came across the group handing out leaflets at the station. Craig said: “It was the first time I had ever spoken at a public meeting. I was quite nervous, but I would definitely to do it again.” Craig has also been taking part in the Pilning Grand Slam ... the ultimate timetable challenge where he has to travel from Pilning, and then back to Pilning, using a minimum of four different train companies.

Sportspound, run by South Glos Council, offers local people the chance to get eight free sports or fitness activity sessions - with the hope that they will keep coming back after the free sessions. A huge range of activities are available, from fitness classes and zumba to swimming and a range of sports, including football, badminton, cricket and table tennis. Sportspound stories Christine Christine joined SportsPound to boost her fitness and keep her body mobile, so she used her vouchers to go swimming. even though she's finished using her vouchers, Christine still absolutely loves going swimming at Filton Leisure Centre, and said she couldn't believe at how nice all of the staff were to everyone "They were so accommodating and friendly. I always look forward to going swimming at Filton and would recommend it to anyone!" Laura Laura used her vouchers to attend a Buggy Fit group in Filton. Even though the classes unfortunately had to stop, Laura has been doing exercise on her own, using Youtube videos whilst her son is napping (yoga, pilates and HIIT) as well as regularly walking 2-4 miles with her dog most days. She also occasionally goes swimming,
and takes her son with her. Laura is now expecting her second child so she's been conscious to maintain a good level of activity whilst managing pregnancy symptoms. "Life's always a balance but I really appreciated the 'kick up the bum' the SportsPound vouchers gave me for getting me started at buggy fit classes!" Jenny Jenny (71) decided to get SportsPound vouchers after being encouraged by another participant, Kate, in a local supermarket. Although she was anxious, she joined 60+ Fitness at Bradley Stoke leisure centre. One year on, and Jenny is still attending her classes! "My SportsPound vouchers helped me look differently at fitness and eating healthily... sometimes I walk a mile to the leisure centre, do my exercises and then walk home".
Ben After using his vouchers for swimming, Ben now regularly makes time to take his son to children's sessions to encourage his family to be active. He also goes to the gym and has taken up a past hobby of football, and says that his levels of fitness have never been better! Zoe Zoe used her vouchers to start swimming again. She is now successfully back into employment with improved fitness, and is looking to sign up as a full gym member. "It helped me both physically and mentally, and I have been able to regain my life back."

Splatts to help with learning disabilities THE Forest of Avon Trust are teaming up again with Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group to deliver another project at the local woodland. It’s a new practical project for people with learning disabilities. They will be doing valuable woodland maintenance at the woodland. The historic Splatts Abbey Wood is near the MoD and Cheswick Village. David Bell, chairman of the Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group, said: “This is brilliant news. It is a treasured local resource, and we are delighted that the woodland is being used by the community.” Nicola Ramsden of the Forest of Avon Trust said: “There is substantial evidence of the health benefits of being outdoors and
getting closer to nature so we are very excited to be running another project for people with learning disabilities at Splatts Abbey Wood. “Participants will gain new practical skills, learn about the wood and its wildlife and have a great time, whilst making a vital contribution to the conservation management of this lovely site.” The UWE GreenSpace team of UWE student volunteers also do workdays at the woodland. And the woodland is increasingly being used and enjoyed by the local community. The group wants to recruit more volunteers from the community, and is currently very keen to recruit more committee members to help strengthen the group.

Keep your children safe online I WOULD like once again to thank the witness who reported suspicious activity at a house in Mackie Road in November. The call led to two arrests on suspicion of burglary, and the suspects have now been sentenced in court. A 19-year-old man was given a two-year suspended jail term and an overnight curfew while a teenage boy has been given a 12-month referral to the youth offender panel. Looking out for one another and reporting suspicious incidents really can help to keep the community safe. If you see someone acting suspiciously around a neighbour’s property, call police straight away. If they’re obviously breaking in, ring 999. Otherwise, call the non-emergen-
cy number 101: operators are on hand 24/7. We’re visiting local primary schools at the moment to talk to the children about staying safe online. The internet is an amazing place full of information, education, social contact and entertainment. But – just like the ‘real’ world – it has risks, and that’s what we’re explaining to the children. Parents and carers need to be aware of what their children are doing online as well as when they’re out with their friends. Many don’t realise there are age restrictions on social media – or don’t know that their children have already got accounts.

MP defends Government record on the NHS Filton's MP has hit back after a campaign was launched claiming the NHS needs more funding. A van carrying a huge advert circled Filton and Bradley Stoke as part of an NHS campaign launched by one of the UK’s biggest campaigning organisations, 38 Degrees. The group called on Mr Lopresti to intervene and ask the Government for more cash for health. But Mr Lopresti said he was a staunch supporter of the NHS and pointed to 'increased health funding' in recent years. He said: “To say that I have voted for budgets that have starved the NHS of funding is appalling and simply untrue. As someone who has received lifesaving cancer treatment on the NHS and is father to four children who were all born in NHS hospitals, I am proud that the Conservatives have increased health funding to
record levels over the last seven years and plan to go further with the Government committed to increasing NHS spending by a minimum of £8 billion in real terms over the course of this parliament. "This injection of funding has produced real results with 14,200 more doctors and over 11,700 more nurses on our wards compared to in 2010. With more personnel on our wards now, we are now looking

Abbeywood Community School's Poet Laureate, Megan Eyres, visited Filton Hill Primary to promote poetry. Student Megan chose to run a fun, imaginative workshop for a class of Year 5 students. Megan led the children and helped them to use their skills to produce their own poems. The children at Filton Hill responded eagerly to Megan and they were enthusiastic to write and then perform their own poetry. Megan did a fantastic job and Abbeywood Community School is very proud of its very own Poet Laureate. We look forward to seeing what Megan will do next. As part of Human Writes, six young Poet Laureates in the West of England have been chosen to represent their schools and raise the profile of poetry in their school communities. The Poet Laureates have been commissioned to write poems as directed by the libraries, project manager and award winning poet, Joelle Taylor. Rail delays after cable thefts costing us dear WITH Christmas over and the New Year in full swing, I have returned to Westminster eager to represent my constituents in Parliament. At Business Questions, I called for Parliament to hold a debate regarding the impact of crime on rail travel after cable theft caused havoc for commuters in January at Bristol Parkway. Despite a swift response from Network Rail, the cable theft still resulted in more than 5,000 minutes of delays to trains and the total cost to the railway and to taxpayers will run into the hundreds of thousands for just one incident. It is important that effective contingency plans are in place to ensure disruption is always kept to a minimum and I am committed to ensuring that Network
Rail deliver on their promises of action. In a Westminster Hall debate about travel times for cancer patients, I highlighted the fantastic work of CLIC Sargent who assist families and young cancer patients in our area. While I applaud the work of CLIC Sargent, I would like to see a permanent solution to these difficulties. There are currently fewer than 20 treatment centres nationally, and that makes life extremely difficult for families who are having to travel for treatment. I would like to see a review of the NHS Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme to ensure that it is supporting those families that need it. Last year, I supported Robert Halfon’s Ten Minute Rule Motion to abolish hospital car park-

I hope that these two campaigns effectively highlight the difficulties that families of patients experience and that the government acts accordingly to address these issues. Charity buys robot to fight prostate cancer A PIONEERING £750,000 surgical robot has been purchased by Southmead Hospital Charity to treat men with prostate cancer at Southmead Hospital. And the charity is hoping to secure a further £750,000 in the coming year to purchase a second surgical robot to treat more men and expand robotic surgery into other cancers. The charity launched the Prostate Cancer Care Appeal in 2016 to fund two urological surgical robots needed at Southmead Hospital. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Every day more than 130 men are diagnosed with the disease in the UK. Southmead Hospital is the one of the largest urological centres in the country, treating thousands of patients with prostate cancer a year, and was one of the first centres in the UK to specialise in robotic surgery to treat the disease. But having helped save the lives of thousands of men, Southmead Hospital’s first robot, bought in 2009, was aging and in need of replacement to enable the urology teams to be at the forefront of cancer care. Now a more advanced Intuitive Da Vinci robot will continue the pioneering work in treating men with prostate cancer from across Bristol and the South West thanks to Southmead Hospital Charity. Elizabeth Bond, head of fundraising at Southmead Hospital Charity, said: “We are thrilled to be able to fund the

Local author has her debut novel published Emily Koch is an award-winning journalist from Bishopston. She lives with her husband and 10-month old daughter and is also a graduate of the Bath Spa Creative Writing programme. In 2008 Emily was in a serious car accident which left her with two broken legs and serious damage to ligaments in her knees, leaving her immobilised. It took her three months to relearn how to walk and three years to gain enough physical strength to be able to run. This experience gave her the realisation that life is short, unpredictable and precious, and led her to quit her job as a journalist, motivating Emily to write her debut novel. That novel is now a reality. Published by Harvill Secker (an imprint of Penguin Random House) “If I Die Before I Wake”
is set entirely in Bristol and tells the story of Alex. Everyone believes Alex is in a coma, unlikely to ever wake up. As his family debate withdrawing life support, and his friends talk about how his girlfriend Bea needs to move on, he can only listen. But Alex soon begins to suspect that the climbing accident in the Avon Gorge that put him here wasn’t really an accident. Even worse, the perpetrator is still out there and Alex is not the only one in danger. As he goes over a series of clues from his past, Alex must use his remaining senses to solve the mystery of who tried to kill him, and try to protect those he loves, before they decide to let him go. Speaking to the Voice, Emily says that the inspiration for the novel came from a news report
that she heard on the radio. “I was driving to work one day, listening to the radio, and there must have been a story about a man in a coma on the news. It got me thinking about his family, his girlfriend – how would his condition affect them? That was how the idea for the book first came about, but it changed a lot from that nugget of inspiration to the finished version of the novel," she said.
Commenting on what it feels like to to find out that you have secured a publishing deal, Emily says, “Finding out that I had an offer from a publisher was very surreal. “By that point I had been working on the book for about 18 months. It is a cliche but it was a dream come true. “A few days later, I got married, so it was a busy and very exciting week!”

Bristol's entertainment hub of the future could find a home in Filton
Locating Bristol's much awaited arena in Filton - an idea which has been gaining momentum in the past 12 months - took a further step forward after it emerged Bristol's mayor Marvin Rees was open to the idea. The original project, earmarked for land near Temple Meads Station, has faced several delays and rising costs, with no significant work having been started. Now the possibility of using one of the huge Brabazon hangars on the airfield has been given fresh impetus by Mr Rees's announcement. An arena on the Filton Airfield site could also revive plans for a Henbury Loop rail line which would give full rail access to Filton from all parts of the city. Current plans allow for a dead-end 'spur' at Henbury. Bristol has long been seen as needing a modern arena to attract the biggest names in entertainment and to be able
to compete with venues such as Cardiff. But opponents of the Temple Meads site say the infrastructure is not good enough and there are only limited parking options. In a column in the Bristol 247 website Mr Rees said he had a responsibility to ensure Bristol did not take a decision it would regret in 75 years. He told the website: "The first time the former mayor talked about an arena, Temple Quarter was set as the location and the price tag was £79m. The first published cost was set at £91m and then £95m quickly afterwards. "By the time I was elected mayor, my first update on the arena showed the cost at £123m and rising. All of this was set against a backdrop of us having £53m money from the government through the Local Enterprise Partnership, and the rest had to be funded by the city, one way or another.
"In addition, I inherited no transport plan associated with the arena and the papers were predicated on the assumption everyone would arrive by train, bike or on foot. "There were more places set aside for bicycles than car park spaces. "This meant the financial position couldn’t be eased though the kind of parking related income streams that have been pivotal to making other city arenas financially possible." Last year Filtonvoice reported that veteran Conservative city councillor Peter Abraham backed plans for the arena on the airfield while the idea also has support from Bristol North West MP Darren Jones, whose constituency borders the site. However Mr Rees has faced opposition from within his own party with other MPs and city councillors saying the arena should remain in Bristol city centre.
In November, Colin Skellett, chairman of YTL Developments which owns the airfield site, cited the area's good transport links, and told the BBC there is space within the hangars to build an arena "at a better price than the Temple Meads development". He added "the intention [at Temple Meads] was that there would be parking linked to the station development... we have to look at what is affordable, and we are happy to play a part to see if the Filton site would work". Bristol City Council said: "Work is continuing on the arena project and since the last update another potentially viable option has come forward. "The update confirms that the council, together with South Gloucestershire and WECA, will consider the deliverability and affordability of the alternative proposal brought forward by YTL, alongside ongoing work to pursue an arena on the Temple Quarter site.

And with planned stations along the railway line which is about 50m away and great links to the M5 and the M4 I think it would be perfect. Bristol's lack of arena really holds it back. Nikki Bradley I think the arena would be great but only if South Gloucestershire Council pull their finger out and sort out the infrastructure. Just look at what they've done to the Aztec West roundabout. Since it's all been changed they have increased flow out of Aztec West and Bradley Stoke but this has reduced the flow of traffic out of Bristol on the A38 which now regularly backs up to the Toyota garage at rush hour. The roundabout at Airbus isn't much better as the controls don't allow traffic to head out of Bristol as
that junction doesn't have lights and the timing on the other lights only allow one or two cars out at a time. So how are we all supposed to cope with more traffic? YTL has expressed an interest in developing an arena within the Brabazon Hangar at Filton as part of its wider, residentialled, development proposals - Bristol City Council "In November, Mayor Marvin Rees announced a pause in pre-construction work at Temple Quarter while a previouslycommissioned independent Value for Money review was completed by KPMG. In the meantime, discussions with the contractor and operator have continued, including looking at value engineering work (ways to deliver the project at lower cost) and the overall deliverability of the project. "In parallel with this, YTL has expressed an interest in developing an arena within the Brabazon Hangar at Filton as part of its wider, residential-led, development proposals. The council has accordingly expanded the scope of the KPMG work to examine the comparative value for money of this alternative proposition, including associated infrastructure costs." Mr Rees added: “Not enough work was done on options in the first place. Now a second option has come forward more formally, giving us two potential schemes to look at. “I am 100% committed to delivering an arena for Bristol and I want to be sure we are
fully informed on the options for achieving this at a cost the city can afford. We are therefore pressing ahead with further detailed examination of the two most viable options. We will update Cabinet again in April.” South Glos councillor for Filton Roger Hutchinson said he supported the arena plans while being mindful that such a project would require investment in local traffic infrastructure. He said: It seems like a good opportunity as the site is so accessible. "We would need to look at the roads but this isn't an obstacle that can't be solved. "I do accept there are concerns about traffic which we are living with all the time." Cllr Hutchinson added that many of the events would take place outside of normal commuter times. He added that an arena would improve the business case for a Henbury Loop. YTL has planning permission for more than 2,600 new homes and three new schools – alongside employment and retail areas – on the former airfield site.
