The 28-year-old worked in electronic warfare and signalling for the Army for six years and was the British Army Powerlifting champion. He took part in his first competition in April 2016. Now an employee of DE&S, he is a technical through-life specialist supporting projects which supply the Army with artillery systems. Indy often works out in the on-site gym at Abbey Wood, which is one of many benefits of working for the branch of the Ministry of Defence which equips and supports the armed forces with everything they need to do their jobs. "I'm very grateful for the support that I've received from my team and, with the flexibility that DE&S offers, I was able to structure my working hours around the extensive training regime that I had," he said. Earlier this year, Indy competed in the All England competition in Manchester and did so well he was picked to represent England at the televised Commonwealths in Newfoundland in September. Indy, who also works out at Trojan Fitness in Ashton, added: “I train four days a week for at least four hours a day but make sure I have three rest days where I do minimal exercise to ensure I am properly rested.” Needing to take on 3,5004,000 calories per day might seem a struggle for a vegetarian, but he manages it through one protein shake and a diet of dairy, soya and, currently, a couple of mince pies a day. “I have been a vegetarian all my life, but the choice nowadays is so much better,” he said. “I try not to eat badly, but I have to admit I do enjoy a paneer curry accompanied by dozens of samosas, macaroni and cheese, and pizza.” Indy has his sights set on the British Championships next year and the World Championships in 2021.

Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm celebrates 20 years!
A
S the picture shows, Father Christmas visited Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm in person this year, during his relaxing summer holiday. He came to wish the Christmas tree growers a very happy anniversary: 20 years of growing and cutting Christmas trees. Not only did he hand out presents to a few lucky children, he also remarked how beautiful the trees were. “Thousands of trees! Enough for everyone!” Having started out as a fairly modest concern of 6,000 trees in 1999, production has steadily increased to 35,000 trees to date, hoping to rise to 40,000 trees by 2021. So there really is plenty for all. For the growers, Peter and Simon Maughan, it has also been a gradual learning experience. “We pick up a lot of tips and techniques from our colleagues at the British Christmas Tree Growers Association, but often we just learn the hard way – when things go wrong! Flooding in 2012, plagues of aphids in 2009, and drought in 2018. In each case we weather the storm and adapt accordingly.” “One thing that I am particularly proud about,” explains Simon, “Is that we have stayed true to our environmental principles.” The farm was set up in 1999 with wildlife in mind. “While we are focused mainly on growing excellent Christmas Trees, I estimate that perhaps as much
as 60% of our land is not covered by tree foliage, and it is in places like these – in the hedgerows and in the spaces between trees – that native wildlife can exist.” “With over 97% of the UK’s wildflower meadows lost since the 1930s, it is important that we do what we can to conserve these habitats. We mow between the trees, rather than spray with weedkiller, which allows wildflowers to grow, and we have a lot of insect and animal life as a result.” 2019 looks to be a promising year for Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. The warm wet summer has boosted growth, producing fullbodied trees with good foliage, and the general appearance of the trees is very good. Most excitingly, a new fully biodegradable Christmas tree net will be on trial. The first of its kind, it will be a huge step towards keeping the farm free of plastic. n NEWS Vision for arena takes step nearer
The dream of an arena for Bristol took a step nearer when developer YTL submitted its plans to repurpose the Brabazon Hangars at Filton. The planning application to Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council to repurpose the Brabazon Hangars in the north of Bristol will create a new entertainment complex for Bristol and the South West. YTL say the new complex will create more than 500 new jobs and inject £1.5billion into the local economy over 25 years, as well as raise the profile of the city and wider region. It uses the 28,000m2 floorspace of all three hangars to create an arena, exhibition and leisure space all under one roof. The arena will be in the Central Hangar and with 17,080 capacity, it will be the third largest in the UK after

Independent Joan ready for 100th birthday by Keri Beckingham 'Amazing' Joan Mills is getting ready to celebrate a very special birthday in December. Joan, from Filton, was born in 1919. Her parents met in Bristol after her father came to the city to convalesce, but he sadly passed away when Joan was three. Her mother later met Harry and they had three boys, and the family grew up in Stokes Croft. Joan worked in Cridland and Rose shoe makers in Bristol until it was bombed during World War Two, and she then went on to work on the machines in the Patchway airdrome. She married her husband James Mills in 1940, and together they had four children: Margaret , Edward (Ted) , William (Bill) and Allan. The family went on to live in Horfield, and since James passed away from a lung and heart condition in 1974, Joan has lived independently. A lover
of travel, during her life she has been to Spain, Austria, Poland and France, and she also enjoys crosswords and doing lots of sewing and knitting. Following a spell of ill health, Joan moved into a flat in the Springfields assisted living development in Filton three years ago. Fast forward to today and she has 10 grand children, 21 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, with another on the way. Her family are getting ready to hold a special birthday tea party for her at Springfields on Sunday, December 15, and her granddaughter Sarah told The Voice that she can’t wait to celebrate. Speaking about Joan and her upcoming birthday, on December 17, Sarah said: “After Harry passed away the family got a lodger, who turned out to be her future husband James! Nan helped to look after her brothers
while they were growing up, and she also cared for her husband and mother too. “After my granddad died, nan used to deliver leaflets to keep money coming in, and she has always been extremely independent. She used to walk her dog twice a day, and would go down Gloucester Road to do her shopping – she did all those sort of things for a long time. “My nan is amazing. She’s got really good hearing, and is totally self-sufficient – she always gets herself up and dressed. She’s led a very simple life, she’s never been extravagant, and our family has always supported her. For years she had a caravan in Brean, and as children we used to go down there for holidays, which I have lots of happy memories of. “She is really excited about her party. Her brother Louis is 92 and will be coming along, and she’s been inviting other people along too!”

Hospital: we won't tolerate racist abuse of staff any more North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs Southmead Hospital, has launched a “Red Card to Racism” campaign to protect all staff from any discrimination. Following a national trend, staff have reported that incidents of racism on wards have increased over the past year so the hospital will be enforcing its zero tolerance policy against abusive behaviour. This means that any patient abusing staff will be challenged and warned, leading to a sportsstyle disciplinary yellow card and then final red card in which treatment would be withdrawn as soon as is safe. Any visitors causing disturbance or behaving in an unacceptable manner will get one verbal warning before being removed. Andrea Young, Chief Executive of North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “We have staff from many different backgrounds, from all over the world, and we pride ourselves on our commitment to equality which is a fundamental value of the NHS. “We’re sending a strong signal that any racism or discrimination is completely unacceptable. "We want staff to challenge and report it and we want everyone to know that it will have consequences.” The abusive behaviour policy
covers anyone with mental capacity making: • Racist or sexist language, gestures or behaviour. • Excessive noise. • Abuse of alcohol or drugs. • Threatening and offensive language. • Malicious allegations. • Intentional damage to trust property. Any cases will be reported on the trust’s incident management system and on patients’ individual notes. Posters around the hospital and videos and photos on social media will inform staff that they are protected by the policy and encourage them to speak up if they witness or experience an incident of racism or discrimination. The hospital will also be calling for staff to join its Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Network to champion the approach and to provide support to any affected staff. Alex Raikes from Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI) said: “SARI is working with a number of hospital trusts regarding racist incidents towards staff and patients, and is pleased to be supporting a dedicated working group at NBT in enforcing the zero tolerance approach towards racism and hate crime. “It is crucial that hospitals
are safe, respectful and inclusive environments, and that all the hard-working employees’ feel supported when they face abuse. “It’s great to see NBT putting out the strongest message possible about the abhorrence of any forms of discrimination.”

Council's £200k bill for one redundancy By: Amanda Cameron BBC LDRS reporter for Filtonvoice South Gloucestershire Council laid off nearly 100 fewer staff last year than the year before but still racked up around £1million in redundancy payouts. The authority made 125 people redundant in 2017/18, at a cost of roughly £1.6million. Last year, there were only 30 compulsory redundancies, but they added up to around £1million – chiefly because of large payments made to three individuals. The unnamed individuals received a payout of between £150,001 and £200,000 each in the year to April 2019, the council’s annual SMALL GARDEN SPECIALISTS report for the year shows. Another three got between £40,001 and £80,000, while the 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE - BASED IN BISHOPSTON remaining 24 received up to £40,000. By contrast, in 2017/18 the highest redundancy payout was in the range £80,001 to £100,000, and went to one person only. Filton remembers November 10th and 11th were bright but cold ... but this did not stop Filton residents gathering to remember the fallen in war. The Filton Remembrance Sunday Service was held at St Peter’s Church with a gathering at the War memorial in the church cemetery at 11am. Filton Community Garden held their service on the 11th, having placed knitted poppies on the fence as in previous years. Local veteran Bill Knight recited the oath as he has done for a number of years now. They were joined by pupils from Charborough Rd Primary and Filton Hill primary to lay
wreaths and poppies at the memorial. The popular local Poppy Appeal Launch, run by the Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion, (RBL), was launched on October 25 in Bristol Parkway Station with uniformed groups and guests. Attending were Stoke Gifford Royal British Legion Branch members and volunteers; youth groups including Scouts and 2152 North Bristol ATC Squadron also the Riders Branch and Patchway Branch of the RBL and honoured guests, Chelsea Pensioner John Honey and WWII D-Day veteran Ron Stevens.

Community garden wins 6th 'outstanding' honour
by Shane Gibson For the sixth consecutive year Filton Community Garden in Elm Park, has been judged as “Outstanding” by the Royal Horticultural Society as part of their In Your Neighbourhood Category which recognises and celebrates people volunteering time to rejuvenate the local area.
The once dark and intimidating area has been radically changed since Chairman of Filton Community Garden, Dave Mikkelson, and the volunteers who were inspired to improve the park and make it somewhere for the residents of Filton to sit and relax. However, as Dave said “Over

I grew up in Downend, went to Rodway, now Mangotsfield, School and know the area inside out. A graduate in European Politics and Economics, I’ve campaigned for a People’s Vote and, in a constituency where the majority voted Remain, am committed to stopping a hard Brexit. I want to see Article 50 revoked to protect local jobs and public services. Campaigning to protect our environment has been my main focus going back to my student days. Most recently, as a South Glos councillor I helped to get cross-party backing for declaring a Climate Emergency in South Gloucestershire. Professionally I have worked in the Voluntary Sector for 25 years, supporting vulnerable adults, promoting their rights and independence. As an MP, I will stand up for local people of all ages and backgrounds. Fighting for social justice and the environment are my passions in life which I will take with me to Parliament.
I have had the great honour of representing this constituency since 2010. I live locally in Frenchay. Since being elected, I have helped secure £50m for a new junction on the M49; Government funding for MetroBus, and to remove tolls on the Severn Bridge. I helped pass legislation which enshrined the Military Covenant in law for the first time. I campaigned vigorously for Airbus’s A400M aircraft, and was delighted when the Government announced that they would buy 22, securing hundreds of jobs. I have met Schools Minister Nick Gibb in London and locally to press for more schools funding and was pleased that the Prime Minister has now pledged a significant increase. If elected, I will support the Prime Minister to get Brexit done. We must move on to address other priorities, such as putting more police on the streets and giving the NHS the biggest cash boost in history.

In 1997, we moved into Jordan Walk, Bradley Stoke, which is owned by a Housing Association and in 1999 we moved to a private property in Hawkins Crescent, Bradley Stoke. We were only able to do this due to the housing company paying the deposit. Over the years I have worked in many different industries, from fish and chip shops to factories and finance. As a former mayor and a current councillor since 2011, I stood under the ticket of the Conservatives until I resigned in 2018 and stood in the May 2019 local elections as an Independent. In June 2019 I decided to set up her own political party called "The Citizens Movement Party UK" when I listened to members of the public who are disillusioned with the current political situation and want change locally and nationally.

How food lover Audrey dropped FIVE dress sizes Meet Audrey Howell. She was born in Bristol to a mother from the Caribbean and went through childhood loving big hearty meals, such as fried dumplings, fried plantains and Caribbean hard dough bread. Christmas was especially hard with her love for sweet and savoury treats and she would often eat until she could eat no more and rarely said no. This habit was something that stayed with Audrey all through her life. She would often buy share bags of crisps and chocolate, ignoring the share part and would eat them all to herself. Then the feeling of guilt followed afterwards but would disappear by the next day. Audrey says: "I found myself hiding extra snacks from others and would often eat them in the car or at home. I had become a secret eater." As her weight ballooned, her sister mentioned she was worried as many times Audrey had to hold on to her while walking. By now
she weighed around 20 stone. Each year saw here trying different diets but each time not being able to maintain it as old habits returned and the weight did as well. Then in 2018 everything changed. Firstly, Audrey had been having lots of joint pain a consultant at the hospital explained that due to excessive weight she had developed osteoarthritis. Each week Audrey could feel herself getting slower and having to take more rests. That October Audrey and her sister took a flight but on exiting the plane, Audrey had trouble putting one foot in front of another as her ankles felt like they would explode from being so swollen. An assistant at the airport offered assistance. Embarrassed, she accepted
the offer of a wheelchair and for the very first time in her life, the reality hit. Audrey said: ’"I needed to take control so on the 3rd of January 2019 I joined the Slimming World group at The Hub Lockleaze on a Thursday night. I was made to feel so welcome and in my first week I lost 8.5lb and was over the moon." What Audrey found was she could still enjoy her favourite meals such as chicken rice and peas as well as treats and never feels hungry. She said: "I continue to lose each week and am five dresses smaller now. Autumn harvest of delicious treats at Pod in the Park Filton’s very own social enterprise, The Pod in the Park, welcomed the changing season with open arms at their first community event, Autumn Fest. As promised, the day delivered an abundance of food; the first pop-up farm stand in Filton, an irresistible bake sale, the unveiling of The Pod's own range of Poduce, including pickles, chutneys and sauerkraut all made by the staff, and the launch of their new menu, which embraces their ethos of affordable, healthy food, with wraps, salads and a daily hot pot on offer. A highlight of the day was the graffiti workshop by local artists, Graft. There were some stunning prints made by local children and adults alike! It is hoped that The Pod will be able to fund Graft to paint a mural on the rather dingy looking building, transforming it into a piece of art for the park. The Design-A-Juice activity was great fun too. Local children had a go at chopping fruit and choosing what to add to their apples to make their own flavour of juice. Happy customers all round, and maybe some new fans of ginger! The event was in part to launch The Pod’s Crowdfunder campaign. They are hoping to find support from the community to invest in these new ideas to make The Pod more profitable and sustainable while the park is quiet. Concerns as metal bar 'falls from bus' on busy route to primary school A resident has contacted Filton Voice after a metal bar was found on the pavement in Filton in November. Vladimer Pruidze believes the bar is part of a First bus after he searched for an image online. Although he did not witness the incident, on Wednesday November 6 at around 9am, another person passing by said they heard a sound similar to a bottle clinking, and then noticed a double decker bus moving away and the bar lying in the middle of the pavement. The metal bar was found on the pavement on Gloucester Road North, opposite St. Teresa's Catholic Church, a popular route on the way to Charborough Road Primary School which is used by lots of children and parents. Speaking to The Voice,
Vladimer said: “It happened during school run time, when I was walking back from taking my son to school, so anything could have happened. I tried to contact the council about it, but I am unhappy with their lack of response and interest.” Commenting on the incident, Ian Coyle, Operations Director First West of England, said: “This is a tree defender which is fitted to many double decker vehicles to protect passengers should low hanging trees hit the windows. "In what would have been a very rare occurrence it is likely to have been torn off by a low hanging branch following recent stormy weather. We are currently investigating but are not in a position to confirm at this time if the bar came from one of our vehicles.”
A spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council confirmed that they had made a few enquiries but the incident was not something that were are aware of.

Neonatal shakeup won't lead to Southmead closure By Stephen Sumner BBC LDRS reporter for Filtonvoice Closer working between Bristol’s two neonatal units will not lead to any closure of services at Southmead Hospital, NHS leaders say. Around a third of the babies born prematurely at Southmead currently have to be transferred four miles away to St Michael’s for specialist care – when they are at their most vulnerable. The North Bristol Trust is planning to reshuffle services but says there is no threat to beds or jobs. Dr Lou Forbus, the head of stakeholder engagement, said: “We aren’t ever, now or any point in the near future, closing Southmead Hospital, and don’t wish to close the neonatal unit at Southmead either. “The proposal is to strengthen the relationship that exists and reduce the number of babies that
have to travel from Southmead to St Michael’s to see paediatric specialists and surgeons. “It will integrate the service so they act more as one. “Other than that, everything
will remain at Southmead.” Dr Paul Mannix, is the trust’s clinical director for women’s and children’s services. “The city is blessed with two really excellent tertiary neonatal units,” he told Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire’s joint health overview and scrutiny panel. “Bringing them together can only be positive for the city. “This isn’t about cost saving. This is about doing what we think is clinically correct. “We’re not looking at losing staff or beds.” Some 6,000 women gave birth in Bristol in 2016. The trust says there would be minimal impact on current
maternity services, with 98 per cent of women still able to give birth at home or book for care in their maternity unit of choice. The proposals would mean fewer than 30 women a year would deliver at St Michael’s instead of Southmead, excluding women who transfer into the area from outside of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Dr Mannix said the trust had consulted parents, some of whose babies had died, and they said they trusted the doctors knew best. The mums and dads were concerned about parking and the provision of bereavement support at St Michael’s, which the trust will look at. The proposals have now been endorsed by councillors. A business plan will be drawn up early in 2020. If it is approved the new model will be implemented over the next two to three years.

Night car prowler Over the last few weeks, we have had an unusual increase in theft from motor vehicles parked on drives overnight. This started off in the Tenth Avenue area of Filton but has spread to the Dunkeld and Rannoch Road area. It would seem that the offender is trying car doors looking for insecure vehicles after 2am when street lights are switched off. The offender then selects small items such as money and sunglasses putting them into his rucksack before making off. If this person is seen please report on 999 so that we can apprehend him. Filton's school run 'idler' drivers could face fine School run drivers in Filton could soon be fined for leaving vehicles idling while stationary in South Gloucestershire. The council is launching a three-month investigation into how it can deter motorists from pumping out toxic fumes by unnecessarily keeping their engines running, especially during school pickup and dropoff. But the Conservative administration on South Glos Council stopped short of introducing fixed penalty notices without further research into whether it was the best way to tackle the problem. A Lib Dem motion at full council called on the local authority to adopt powers under legislation to issue fines to drivers. However, members voted
against it, and a Tory amendment was approved which removed the requirement for financial penalties. The Conservative amendment said limitations in the 2002 road traffic regulations, including how fines were issued, meant introducing them “might make little real impact on the number of motorists idling while waiting outside schools”. It said restrictions such as ‘keep clear’ zig-zags and double yellow lines were already in
place and educating parents and children could have a “positive impact in providing awareness”. Lib Dem Cllr Mike Drew accused the Tories of “watering down” the motion. Fellow Lib Dem Cllr Louise Harris said: “I do not understand why there is a call for further research and studies when there is absolutely masses of research into this subject. “We do not need further studies or more information. “It is very often the children who are walking and whose families do not have cars who are getting poisoned by the parents with cars. It is disappointing the council is not using legislation that is already there.” Group leader Cllr Claire Young said traffic wardens already handed out fines for parking offences so they could
extend that to idling vehicles. “I cannot support an amendment that takes away the option of using these powers and takes away that stick,” Cllr Young said. She told Conservatives: “You are clearly entering into the process not in the spirit of considering enforcement action as an option.” Cllr Pat Trull, who moved the original motion, said: “Unless there are good sanctions on car drivers, I do not believe we will move forward with this.” But cabinet member for planning, transportation and strategic environment Steve Reade proposed a three-month study to prepare a report to cabinet, a move backed by fellow Conservative Cllr Chris Wood who said: “It is wise to consider all the options available to us."

Chocolate Orange Cake By June Watkins
Everyone will love this cake, topped by the famous Terry's chocolate treat Ingredients:
• 8oz - Caster Sugar • 8oz - Self-Raising Flour • 8oz - Butter (Fat) • 1.5 teaspoons - Baking Powder • 4 - Eggs
• 1-2 teaspoons - Orange Flavouring (Oil) • 1oz - Cocoa Powder • 1 - Terry's Chocolate Orange • Orange Smarties or orange chocolate drops for decoration
Method:
1. Pre-Heat the oven at 160 Degrees (Electric), 140 Degrees (Electric - Fan Assisted) or Gas mark 3. 2 Mix in the Flour, Sugar, Eggs and Butter in a large mixing bowl. 3. Add in the Orange Flavouring (to preference) and the Cocoa Powder. 4. Mix well. 5. Grab two 8" cake tins and grease them using either cooking spray or butter. 6. Spoon the mix evenly in to the cake tins. 7. Place the cake tins in the Pre-Heated oven for approx. 40-45 minutes. 8. Once risen, place a skewer or an alternative in the middle of the cakes. If it comes out clear, they are done. 9. Carefully turn them upside down onto a cooling rack and leave to cool for approx. 30 minutes - 1 hour. 10. Decorate accordingly and add the Terry's Chocolate Orange segments to complete the decoration. 11. Enjoy!

Flourishing now - but cuts threatened festival Flashback to 2014 as Filtonvoice approaches its 100th issue As we continue our look back at Filtonvoice, December 2014 had the disappointing news that financial constraints meant the Filton Festival was to be cancelled in 2015. Councillors grappling with tight budgets decided they could not afford the £4,000 which was needed to support the event. Since then, the festival has flourished and 202 sees the 20th anniversary with the event likely to be bigger and better than ever. In December 2014, Vice-chair of finance Councillor Brian Mead said: “It is disappointing that we are in this position. “Finance has proposed to

withdraw the funding for the festival . “Our position is not helped by the localism agenda meaning the council is now responsible for services such as Youth Provision with no additional funding from Central Government. The museum eventually opened in 2017 and is situated on Filton Airfield, with the main exhibition housed in a

W
rist watches are making a comeback and it makes me smile. Although the volume of watch sales has halved over the last ten years, the value of this market sector has doubled. Tick tock. I smile because, when I remember my father, I instinctively associate his memory with the no-nonsense watch that would always be on his wrist: large, clear faced and reliable – much like Harry himself. He had a number of these watches, not through any sense of vanity or wealth, but purchased as reassurance that he would always be punctual – and he always was – sometimes ridiculously so. It was reassuring to hear my father – regular as clockwork – wind up his watch at night and it was comforting to hear the rhythmic tick of this timepiece. His watch straps were always leather, never flashy, and again, he would keep a stock of replacement leather straps in both black and brown in case of any untimely emergency. Of course the current watch market is much more complex and retailers fight hard in the fierce competition for space on a customer’s wrist. This potentially watchful customer needs to navigate the choice of smart watch, wrist tech and high-end design as well as functionality. Purchasing a watch with this wealth of choice can be no speedy activity. Those with money can demand a watch that merges its personality with their’s; high art and craftsmanship are required if the wearer is to wear the watch rather than the watch wear the wearer. Difficult times. Today I wonder if a gifted smart watch would be well received, or, seen by the recipient as an unsubtle hint that time spent on the sofa would be time better spent tracking metabolic rate and step count. Personally, I would need to steer clear for fear of potential SWA (Smart Watch Addiction). The offer of one of my father’s old watches would certainly be much more attractive to me. n NEWS New waste contract to cut costs and litter Following an in-depth review and negotiations with SUEZ (formerly SITA), who operate waste and recycling vehicles in Filton, improved terms have been agreed for the final five years of the PFI (Private Finance Initiative) that governs how kerbside collections are managed in South Gloucestershire. As part of the new arrangements, which will run until 2025, the company have agreed to invest on top of savings of £1m per annum. This includes installing CCTV cameras on all waste collection and recycling vehicles to provide better monitoring data; buying additional recycling vehicles; and using a 70/30 ‘split-back’ vehicle at Christmas and Easter to collect the additional cardboard and mixed plastic and cans put out for collection at these times.
