Filton's MP has dismissed moves to have a so-called 'People's Vote' on Brexit. Mr Lopresti said he had not had any feeling while meeting local people that there was a desire to look again at the 2016 Referendum result. He added that it was being driven by politicians who 'do not respect' the original result. He has found himself at odds with his wife, MP for Morley and Outwood Andrea Jenkyins, who was among a group of hardline Brexiters who have submitted letters expressing no confidence in Prime Minister Teresa May Mr Lopresti also gave his backing to Prime Minister Teresa May's draft withdrawal
agreement, which has attracted opposition from both Remain supporters and hardline Brexiters. He said: “Firstly, I get no sense of any real desire for a second referendum when I am out in the constituency talking to people, and my constituency correspondence reflects this. The view I am getting on the doorstep and out and about is that the overwhelming majority of people want the government to just get on with it and deliver Brexit. n NEWS In May next year, for the first time since South Glos was formed in 1996, Filtonians will not have the opportunity to vote for Roger Hutchinson. In every election since, he has been returned as a councillor and held off the opposition including a certain Jack Lopresti by just 18 votes in 2007. His years of service, including

The South Glos election in May, however, will not have his name on the ballot paper. Roger is standing down after boundary changes left Filton with just two seats on the council. Standing councillors Ian Scott and Adam Monk will contest the election for Labour. It will be the end of an era, with Roger a familiar face not just in politics but in supporting many local organisations. In his time, he was heavily involved in the creation of the Shield Retail Park, the redevelopment of the old
'Dolphin' Pool and the creation of the WISE campus of South Glos and Stroud College. He said: "I am sure I will miss

After more than 2 deades, Roger set to step down From Page 3 it's been the personal issues with residents which gives me satisfaction, like concerns over kerbs outside their houses. "But there have also been some significant projects. When the Shield Centre was being built, the developers were worried over planning guidelines which said no roads could come off the Ring Road. "So I helped them get round that by suggesting to them that Filton needed a new library building and that they might offer to build one for us, by doing this it paved the way for building the shopping centre. "Another notable piece of work was the creation of the WISE Campus which required a lot of discussion with the former Filton High School and the education department." He was also prominent, as town council chairman, in the

Another achievement was the building of a skate park at Elm Park although the cycle speedway track, at a cost of ÂŁ50,000, which started well has since been a failure and has hardly been used for the purpose it was designed for. Roger says the town council made a mistake by trying to charge for the track use. The council argued that it could not have one activity being free while charging for others. He was also involved in a very public row with fellow Labour councillors in 2010 over plans to re-profile Elm Park. Roger said the deal with waste firm Churngold would have transformed Elm Park by levelling sports pitches and introducing better landscaping and drainage. His opponents said the

n NEWS contract was not sound and there were fears over the impact of lorries dumping waste on Elm Park, concerns from residents and environmental concerns, although it had planning permission and support from the waste and minerals local planners. The dispute led to disagreements with Labour Councillors which led to Roger having to address a number of accusations against him at the Standards Committee of South Glos, although he was subsequently cleared of verbally abusing one of them at a Town Council meeting. Roger has been involved in the Labour movement since he joined the party aged 15 in Milton Keynes. Originally from Plymouth, he grew up in Buckinghamshire. His mother was branch secretary of the local Labour Party and Roger, after working for 10 years in the 1970s for the Amalgamated Engineering Union in London, eventually got his first job for the Labour Party as a regional organiser in Surrey, rarely a happy hunting ground for the party. During this time he helped a young candidate in his first General Election. The candidate lost that time, 1982, in Beaconsfield but would go on to be one of the most long serving Prime Ministers in British history - Tony Blair. Roger has stayed friends with
Mr Blair and his wife Cherie ever since. In 1987 he secured a similar job in Bristol, covering Devon and Cornwall. This led to his selection and election to the new South Glos Council in 1995, in the former ward of Filton Charborough. It was around this time he was also elected chair of Filton Town Council, where he remained until 2011. Roger, a staunch part of the Blairite wing of Labour, says local democracy functions best with party politics. This conflicts with the claims in some quarters that politics at town or parish level should be free from party ties.
He said: "People say party politics doesn't work but it formalises the council. "As deputy leader of South Glos I had to work with other parties. But whatever your party affiliation, the important thing is to be honest in politics." On life after council politics, Roger said he would support his beloved Plymouth Argyle as well as Bristol City Women, and continue his love of pĂŠntanque (boules) with Filton Pentanque Club at Elm Park. He is also a strong advocate for animal rights. On Facebook, residents have been remarking on his plan to stand down.

Sam Rawle: Met him when I used to be a member of the Mortimer Road Allotment Association. Always thought he was a councillor for all the right reasons - to do his bit for the local community. He was pragmatic and fair but certainly did his bit to help us improve the facilities on the allotment. I wish him well for the future.

Shakeup of waste collections could see just green boxes being used for all recycling

Residents in Filton are being asked to give their views on recycling changes being proposed by South Gloucestershire Council. The council would like to stop providing white and green bags for kerbside recycling collections, and would like to ask residents to use green boxes for all of their recycling materials instead, in a move which could save £100,000 every year as well as benefit the environment. Speaking about the proposals, Cabinet Member for Communities and Tourism Cllr Paul Hughes said: “In 2017 we simplified and improved our recycling collections with the introduction of weekly recycling for all household recycling material – plastic, cans, paper, cardboard, textiles, small

n NEWS electrical, glass and food. At the time residents could continue to use white bags for plastic, green bags for cardboard and boxes for other material, or choose to just use boxes. Extra recycling boxes are provided free of charge. “We are now consulting on stopping the future supply of recycling bags. This has been proposed for a number of reasons, the main ones being that they are not biodegradable, they need to be replaced regularly and are currently sourced from overseas. The boxes last longer and have less impact on the environment. “We are proposing that we stop supplying new bags. Any bags in use can continue to be used, but would be replaced by boxes when the bags deteriorate. “We will continue to support those residents who cannot physically manage the boxes, through our assisted collection service where the crews collect and return the containers.” Residents have until January 25 2019 to have their say on the
proposals and express how the changes might affect them. The proposal will then be reviewed and a decision will be made by March 2019, which will be fully publicised. Suzanne Haynes: Assume these suggested boxes would have lids, or else the paper/cardboard inside will be affected by rain and snow and end up strewn around Filton on windy days. There is already a huge littering problem in Filton due to recycling measures within HMOs. Carolyn Evans: I don’t mind having them as long as they’re big enough! They encourage us to recycle, but if we can’t fit it all in the bin it could potentially end up going to landfill. Polly Kirby: Boxes are fine as long as they aren’t planning just one. I recycle so much every week that sometimes I have added bags. Paul Thomas: Having had boxes foisted on me as the bags were torn, I have to say the are handy and useful. Easy to use too, however they also get damaged. Maybe not as easily, however what is the comparative cost of replacing one? Here's another suggestion. One bin for rubbish, one for all recycling. Leads to faster collection, reduced traffic delays, more peaceful commutes. Items will then be sorted back at the depot. Sarah Smith: I am happy with the bags going as they break up quickly in the weather. Just ordered another box to replace plastics bag as we jam that full each collection. But I am concerned about cardboard and paper getting soaked through before collection, as we have too much to store it all indoors for a week.

Call for food donations at festive season by Becky Day North Bristol Foodbank is calling on Filton residents to support those who are facing a food crisis this Christmas. One place that locals can donate food supplies is Asda in Abbeywood Retail Park, where a trolley has been installed for customers and staff to make donations. The trolley is situated between the checkouts and the exit. Thanks to the generosity of the store’s customers and staff, the trolley has already been filled once, with items then distributed to the local foodbank outlets. North Bristol Foodbank has five outlets – Revive Charity Shop in Filton Avenue, St James Church in Lockleaze, Ebenezer Church in Horfield, the Greenway Centre in Southmead, and the newest outlet at St Chad's in Patchway. Asda store manager, Andrew Ball said: "We are only too
delighted to install a trolley in our store for our customers to make donations to our local Foodbank. We pride ourselves on the contribution we make to our community and helping local people who are in crisis is part of this.”
Matt Dobson, North Bristol Foodbank manager, said: “At Christmas we see a real increase in number of people coming to the foodbank. “As temperatures drop we see families having to make the horrible decision of heating or

N
ow and again there are moments in life that seem to bring us all together. Just last month, the anniversary of 100 years since the end of WW1 did exactly that. St Peter’s was absolutely packed with so many of the community, drawn together with a common purpose of marking that day and remembering the fallen. Christmas is a time that also brings people together. It is one of those times of the year where we will once again, join together with friends, families, work colleagues, fellow parents, neighbours or even strangers to mark this special time of year. We all experience Christmas differently. For some there will be excitement, for others a burden of expectation. Some may be blessed with an abundance of family, some may face it alone. Yet there is still something about this time of year that draws us together. Just recently in preparation for our Advent course at St Peter’s, I rewatched the BBC production of The Nativity. In it there is a very real sense of disparate peoples and communities, joining together in observing this incredible star that appears. This year the Church Of England has launched the #FollowTheStar campaign encouraging people to do exactly that - to Follow the Star. In the lead up to Christmas you will see a star appear on the outside of the St Peter’s, inviting you to turn your focus to the incredible star that can take you on the life changing Christmas journey. When you see our star go up on the church, I’d like to invite you to do the same. Put up a star outside your home and with us and people all over the world #FollowTheStar this Christmastime. Allow it to be for you and for those who see it a symbol of hope, a symbol of promise, a symbol of joy and a symbol of love. Bid to raise awareness of heartbreaking rare disease by Keri Beckingham A local family want to raise awareness of rare disease that’s caused them a huge amount of heartache and suffering. Huntington’s Disease is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder which affects the central nervous system. It causes damage to nerve cells which leads to gradual physical, mental and emotional changes, and in turn this then causes severe incapacitation and eventually death. All children of affected parents have a 50/50 chance of inheriting it and at the moment there is no cure. Along with cognitive impairment, symptoms of the disease include loss of mobility, severe movements and problems with feeding and swallowing. For Phyllis Hagan and her family, the disease has had a

heartbreaking impact. Phyllis, who lived on Filton Avenue in Filton for 32 years and has recently returned to Hunters Way after living in Patchway for eight years, has not only lost her ex-husband to the disease, but her daughter Carley Baldwin has also inherited the disorder and is now in the advanced stages. Carley is 37 years old and had to enter the care system when her health deteriorated and she needed more specialised care. As a result her children Charlie, 21, and Poppy, who is 13 and attends Abbeywood School, have been living with Phyllis for the last eight years. organised a charity tractor pull in Bedminster in honour of his family and to raise funds for Huntington’s Disease Association, a charity that helps sufferers to live a better life by improving care and support services, as well as funding research into the disorder. In total 60 local people attended the event, which involved 20 people pulling a
tractor from the top of East Street to Redcliffe Hill, and finishing up outside the Colosseum pub. Collections were made en route, and over £7,000 was raised. In addition, a bucket collection at Asda Bedminster in September also raised £1,000. The family are planning on doing this again on Saturday, December 15, to raise further awareness and hopefully push their fundraising
total closer to £10,000. His little sister Poppy has some slight health issues herself and she has had to watch her mum’s journey through this illness and cope with her big brother’s death too. Not only is she amazing with her mum but she also organised a cake sale at her school which raised over £200 and awareness for Huntington’s too! “Anyone who knows Poppy will know this took her completely out of her comfort zone, but she did it! Gabriella’s walk raises funds for Bristol by Keri Beckingham A little girl from Filton has decided to challenge herself and raise funds for a Bristol homeless charity at the same time. Gabriella Croker, who’s aged 7 and attends Charborough Road School, recently asked her mum Olivia whether she could raise funds for charity. After talking about different challenges she could complete and causes that she could raise funds for, Gabriella decided to walk 5k in aid of Caring in Bristol, a local charity that supports homeless people by providing night shelters, clothing and food. Gabriella also loves to bake, and in addition to the walk she also organised a cake sale at school to try and raise some funds. Olivia and Gabriella’s godmother and grandmother contributed cakes to the sale, and Gabriella even baked some

cookies herself. Gabriella and Olivia completed the 5k walk on The Downs on Saturday, October 27. Although the walk started on a beautiful autumnal day, at the 2km mark the heavens opened. Speaking about the walk and Gabriella’s fundraising, Olivia said: “We got soaked! Nevertheless, Gabriella carried on and was very determined. Along the way we stopped and looked at bugs and also kicked some leaves, and when it rained Gabriella spoke about how awful it must be for people sleeping outside in all weathers, especially at this time of year. “Overall we completed it in 1 hour and 26 minutes, and my mum and my five-year-old son Alex also came and cheered us on at the end which was lovely. “Since doing the walk Gabriella has received a lovely

A festive evening of songs and carols A local choir is putting on a festive evening of songs and carols in Filton. The Filtones Choir are holding their Christmas Crackers Concert on Friday, December 14, at Eden Grove Methodist Church at 7.30pm. The choir was founded in 1982 by Tessa and Frank Martin, and are a non-auditioned group of mainly retired men and
women who meet to rehearse at the church on Wednesday afternoons. During the evening there will also be a raffle and a retiring collection in aid of the charity BRACE, who fund research into dementia. Budget cuts leading to 'despair' as some by Rebecca Day A report, highlighting the plight of local primary schools, has been deemed ‘devastating’ and ‘truly shocking’ by a group of local school campaigners. The two-page ‘Funding Crisis 2018’ report was compiled as a result of a survey conducted by Yate primary head Jon Bird, on behalf of the South Glos Primary Headteachers' Executive, which was distributed to all 95 primary schools across the authority. The chief executive of the Olympus Academy Trust, which oversees nine schools including Abbeywood, Filton Hill and Charborough Road, has told Filtonvoice the ongoing impact of budget changes would be 'devastating' for pupils. Of the surveys distributed, 58 primary heads responded – half of which saying that they have had to make cuts to teaching staff and 75 per cent have made cuts
to teaching assistants. It has been widely reported that South Glos is one of the lowest-ranked authorities for education funding in England. And the recent BBC programme, School, has given viewers an insight into the impact of cuts on one particular South Glos academy trust. The report, which reveals that just under 40 of the primaries anticipate a budget deficit by 2020/21, states: “Schools have already implemented drastic cuts in almost every area, to avoid deficit budgets. “Yet over three years, this is becoming increasingly impossible, with schools unable to set sustainable budgets, even with such severe cuts.” One head commented in the report: “The biggest savings are in teachers: I have cut everything back already and am now having to cut back on the most precious
resource that makes the most difference: teachers. “How am I supposed to produce better results with fewer teachers, fewer TAs, fewer resources…I just don’t know. I love my job and my school but it’s getting ever harder to keep going.” Debbie Porteous, from the Fair Funding For All Schools South Glos campaign group, said: “The recent South Glos headteachers’ survey and statements are truly shocking. “They demonstrate the devastating extent and impact of the cuts on the education and wellbeing of all of our children. “We constantly hear from the government that they are giving adequate funding to schools. The facts in this report show this not to be true. The situation is causing despair amongst people working hard in impossible circumstances.”
Support for vulnerable children and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are said to be just some of the areas hardest hit by the cuts. Dave Baker, Chief Executive Officer at Olympus Academy Trust, which has three schools in Filton, said: “South Gloucestershire Council has a significant shortfall in funding for schools because it has had to overspend on an ongoing basis to support students with special educational needs and disabilities. “In order to offset its overspend, the council has been consulting on proposals that will re-direct £3million from school budgets and/or reduce the amount of funding we receive in our schools for students with special educational needs and disabilities. “This would be particularly

devastating for us as we have been amongst the lowest funded schools in the country for over 10 years and are the now the lowest funded local authority area in England. “As a group of nine schools in the Olympus Academy Trust, we work incredibly hard to provide a good level of education with less money than all other schools in the country. “We have to balance our budgets every year and, as a charitable organisation, we use every last penny of our funding to improve the life chances of young people in our local area.” A consultation document, which outlines South Glos Council’s proposals for schools and SEND funding for 2019/20, states: “Our current forecast for 2018/19 shows we are likely to spend more than the available funding by over £3m. “This follows a number of
years where we have spent more on Schools and SEND areas than the annual funding given to us in the form of the Dedicated Schools Grant, resulting in a forecast cumulative deficit of over £12m by the end of 2018/19. “The council therefore feels that as a minimum next year’s budget should be set so that it at least addresses the current £3m gap between the annual funding passed onto the Council and the related annual spend.” The council are now considering three options: to transfer £3million from the mainstream schools funding to SEND; a £3million reduction in ‘top-up funding’ which is used to support SEND children whose needs cannot be met by resources normally available in school; or by reducing both the mainstream schools funding and top-up funding by £1.5million each. The consultation period
ended on November 25. Ms Porteous also told the Filtonvoice: “There are increasing numbers of children who are not identified as SEND yet who have significant needs and cutting the funding any deeper is irresponsible where teaching assistants, support staff and supportive subjects have already been removed. “Mental health needs in young people is now at epidemic proportions and to take funding from students who do not have SEND cover is frankly dangerous when you consider rising rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide amongst young people. “Remember these are all children, all increasingly vulnerable, whose needs are not being met and whose difficulties are exacerbated or caused by the current situation in schools and wider austerity impacts.”

Health leaders in ‘Help Us Help You’ call as NHS services gear up for challenging winter NHS leaders in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire are urging Filton people to ‘help us help you’ to stay well and get the right care, as the health and care system gears up for another challenging winter. n ABBEYWOOD SCHOOL NEWS Two students from Abbeywood Community School visited First World War battlefields just weeks before nations across Europe marked the 100th anniversary of the end of the conflict. Tom Wallington and Anish Kataria were representatives for the Legacy Project being run by University College London and the Government. Among the battlefields visited were around Ypres and the Somme valley. Now that they have returned from the trip, the idea is that Tom and Anish will come up with their own legacy project in order to share their experiences of the battlefields with the other students at Abbeywood. Before their departure, the boys spent some time researching soldiers from the local area whom they would try to locate during their time on the battlefields. The two soldiers they came across were Alfred Luke Cannon and Duncan J Thompson. Alfred was from Southmead and Duncan lived on
Students reflect on sacrifices 100 years after end of WW1 Filton Avenue. On their first day, they visited Lijssenthoek and it was here amongst the many graves that they discovered the only woman in the cemetery (and only one of 5 commemorated in cemeteries) - Nellie Spindler. This cemetery in particular showed the diverse nature of the people fighting in the war - different nationalities and religions who were all buried together as comrades. On the third day they visited the Somme valley which witnessed some of the bloodiest battles of the war, with as many as 50,000 casualties on the first day. Whilst there they also visited Thiepval memorial where Alfred Cannon is commemorated. That evening they visited Menin Gate, which was an emotional experience. Hearing the bugles

Conference held ‘to innovate and inspire’ A range of partners and stakeholders from across the public, business, health and education sectors gathered at Aerospace Bristol in Filton last month for the Innovate & Inspire - South Gloucestershire Council Conference 2018. Delegates were given an insight and overview into the council’s current work and key projects through keynote presentations from speakers including council leader Toby Savage and chief executive Amanda Deeks. The conference explored what makes for a successful place and offered the opportunity for stakeholder engagement and discussions on the critical challenges and exciting opportunities for our
communities going forward based on the ‘Innovate & Inspire’ theme. Key topics covered included the delivery of innovative and imaginative new homes, notably the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood, the revitalisation of some of our less affluent urban centres and how we provide for healthy environments and lifestyles alongside co-operation in delivering positive mental health for our communities. Ginger cake with honey icing and gingerbread on the top Ingredients
250g unsalted butter 200g golden caster sugar 50g dark muscovado sugar 280g golden syrup 200g clear honey 60g stem ginger, grated 20g syrup from stem ginger jar 500g self-raising flour 4 tsp ground ginger 3 medium eggs 330ml whole milk Icing 200g unsalted butter, softened 400g icing sugar, sifted 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tbsp syrup from stem ginger jar Dash of milk to loosen
Method
2. B utter, sugars, golden syrup, honey, stem ginger and syrup into large pan and heat until melted and smooth. 3. F lour and ground ginger into large bowl. Whisk to combine. 4. M ilk and eggs into jug. Whisk to combine. 5. P our butter mixture into flour. Mix to combine. Pour in milk mixture. Mix to combine. 6. D ivide into tins. Bake for 30-35 minutes until skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool. 7. M ake icing. Beat butter until pale and smooth. Add icing sugar and beat for 5 minutes. Add syrup. Beat again. Add milk to loosen if too stiff. 8. P lace one cake on plate/board. Spread over icing or pipe on. Add next layer. Repeat. Spread icing on top of cake (or pipe it on). Add sprinkles or other decorations to finish.

Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm feels the heat THE exceptionally hot and dry summer this year hit Christmas tree growers at Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm particularly hard, causing thousands of baby trees to die during the relentless drought and scorching weather. “We saved what we could,” said Simon Maughan, “But the ground was utterly parched and we have to use water responsibly.” The heat was felt right across Europe, and
industry experts believe that almost an entire season’s crop of Christmas trees has been lost, with Denmark, Germany and Poland being the areas hit the worst. A systematic replanting programme has already begun (see picture), but as Simon admits, “It won’t cover all our losses – we’ll just have to write 2018 off as a bad year.” “Customers mustn’t worry about tree shortages, however,” says Simon. “It takes at least 6 years for a Christmas tree to grow to the appropriate height, so the affects of this heatwave will not be felt before 2023.” A silver lining, perhaps, is that because of the heat, many Christmas trees this year are showing first-class foliage. Another Europe-wide phenomenon this year is the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May. “We can no longer hold people’s information without their consent, which means that this year there will be no Christmas cards sent out to our customers. Rest assured we’ll be back in 2019 – all you have to do is enter our free Christmas Raffle, in which three £100 shopping vouchers are up for grabs.” With the drought behind them, hundreds of Christmas Trees now await harvest at Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. Nordman Firs continue to be their biggest seller, with
the Norwegian Spruces a close second. “The benefit of a freshly cut tree is that it will last much longer once you bring it into the house. The latest research still tells us that it is worth watering a cut tree after it has been felled, particularly for Norwegian Spruce, because it keeps the foliage glossier for much longer.” Eager customers wanting to reserve their trees for later cutting are welcome at the Christmas Tree Farm from late November onwards. Choir aims for success with song for NHS A song celebrating the NHS in its 70th year has been released in the charts by a Bristol choir to raise money for their local hospital this Christmas. We Are The Same Inside by ‘Melody Makers Choir and Horfield Primary School Choir for the NHS’ is now available to download on all digital download sites. Money raised from downloads will be donated to Southmead Hospital Charity to support patients and fund medical research and new equipment at North Bristol NHS Trust. The 80 strong-choir is made up of people from communities surrounding Southmead Hospital, including many former patients, NHS staff as well as children from Horfield C of E Primary School. Lead vocalists are Sarah Villaraus, Rebekah Brown and 11-year-old Nathan Hughes, now a pupil at Colston’s School.
Composed and written by Melody Makers Choir leader Natalie Veal, with lyric support from choir member Natalie SitalSingh, We Are The Same Inside captures the ethos of an inclusive and dedicated health service. Natalie Veal, a choir leader from Henleaze, said she wanted to bring together her love of

It's creeeeeeepy as village enjoys Halloween fun night Cheswick’s little horrors were invited to a Halloween disco at the new Lockleaze Sports Centre on Bonnington Walk. A joint effort by Guy Hollis of LSC and the events committee, the disco was enjoyed by all and the community were well and truly into the Halloween spirit. Committee lead Holly Stowell said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to work with a new facility in our community and to be able to get Cheswick residents over there to visit and have a look around while enjoying themselves at a great social event.” On Halloween evening the events committee also ran their annual Trick or Treat trail, attracting hundreds of local children to meet at the Square to receive a Cheswick trail map leading them to all of the houses expecting little visitors to come knocking. The committee use social media to ask for households in Cheswick to be listed on a map to be given out on Halloween to let the little ones know which houses have treats for them. Holly added: “It’s our best event of the year and it runs itself! "We have around 50 houses and businesses each year open their doors to Cheswick children, who’re always so well behaved,
polite and they put in so much effort with their costumes. "The households who are on the map are fantastic, some go all out with their decorations and costumes. It’s a brilliant night full of fun and community spirit and it’s always a great success.” This year, as well as residents houses the map also included Ashley Down Old Boys rugby club, with chairman James Hall giving out treats in their spooky clubhouse, Boston Tea Party and chip shop Cod & Caper, whose owner Amanda Rostam-Shirazi was excited to see all the children come in for their second year as part of the trail. The Cheswick events committee would like to thank everyone who took part in both events and in particular to the children who made it all so much fun to organise.

Filton remembers On the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, Filton people gathered to remember the fallen. Filton Church, along with other churches, held a service of remembrance and afterwards, at 11am on Sunday, November 11, parishioners and youngsters from uniformed organisations gathered outside as wreaths were laid at the war memorial. Across Filton, schools and workplaces also observed silence in the week leading up to the 11th. Meanwhile the Stoke Gifford Branch of the Royal British Legion has had an incredible "Poppy Appeal Fortnight" raising money across the local area - Almondsbury, The Mall at Cribbs Causeway, Bradley Stoke, Patchway, Stoke Gifford and Filton. Beaufort Grange care home in Cheswick commemorated Remembrance Day on Sunday 11th November, where they joined the rest of the United Kingdom in holding a two-minute silence at 11am. As well as marking Remembrance Day by wearing poppies and watching the televised service, some residents were taken to the local cenotaph to commemorate the members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty. They were very fortunate to have as special guests into the
home representatives from three of the armed forces, A spokeswoman said: "We would like to thank Captain Bruce Duncan of the R.A.F, Colonel Christopher Henson of the Army and Commander Nigel Winstone of the Royal Navy, for coming in and sharing their stories with our residents. We also gave the residents that served in the forces the opportunity to go to the memorial parade in Bristol. " Mary a resident at Beaufort Grange said: “It is very important that we take part in these services. My mother’s brother served in the
war and they never found him again. They never found out what happened to him, like so many others, we will never know. It’s them we honour on this day” John, another resident, said: “I am very grateful to be a part of the crowd that was there to remember our fallen soldiers and to thank and honour those who served for us." Over 50s volunteers needed for musical sessions at care homes A volunteer organisation in Bristol is looking for people over the age of 50 to help lead musical activity sessions at care homes across the city. The aim of RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme) is to encourage the over 50s to volunteer for the benefit of their local area. They are part of a wider organisation called Volunteering Matters which covers volunteering opportunities for people of all ages, and although RSVP only offer opportunities for people aged 50+, the projects they support are for people of all ages. RSVP have about 900 members across the areas of
Bristol, BANES, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Everyone involved in the organisation is a volunteer, from administrative staff to volunteer coordinators, which makes them a very cost-effective organisation. They have a team of about 47 organisers, who manage and support a group of volunteers, and they are currently looking for volunteers to help them lead musical activity sessions in care homes across Bristol. Musical activity sessions are chair-based activities that involve music and movement, such as arm movement, shaking and playing instruments, as well as singing. A mixture of classical

Jan said: “Like many people, I feel that older people have been marginalised in our society and I wanted to do something to make a difference. The musical activity sessions are great fun and each one is run a bit differently, however they all have the same aim of improving the quality of residents’ lives.
“Music is a great way to get people out of their rooms and a lot of residents will say this is the best session of the week and that it’s their highlight, which is always lovely to hear.” Musical activity volunteers are asked to give around an hour and a half of their time each week to help run the sessions during a morning or afternoon, and RSVP currently need support with sessions at care homes in Henleaze, Westbury-on-Trym, Stoke Bishop and Monks Park. Volunteers will need to have the confidence to stand up in front of a group of older people and lead singing, and will either need to play music from a CD or play an instrument if they are able to. Super slimmer wins the title of Mr Sleek! A dazzling slimmer is getting ready to shine this Christmas party season after achieving an amazing 4 stone 3.5 pounds weight loss in just 19 weeks. Cadets mark Remembrance Day Staff and students stood silent as Orchard School Bristol remembered the fallen in war. Members of the school’s Cadets group were in full uniform and on parade at 11am. Before the minute’s silence, Head of House Mr Hurran reminded everyone why we do this and stressed that Remembrance is not just about the World Wars but also more recent conflicts. Orchard School students worked on a series of activities across the curriculum. Under the theme of “We Remember”, students in Years 7, 8 and 9 developed thoughtful and creative pieces, including drawing, paintings and multimedia responses in Art, poems in English, and thought provoking Digital Media images and letters in History to commemorate the day. During tutor time, all pupils were able to create an individual poppy for a member of the Gloucestershire Regiment who sadly lost their life during World War One. These poppies and other creative pieces were used to produce a Remembrance display.
Students rally round to gather food for those in need Students organised a food bank collection as part of Children in Need, with boxes of vital supplies gathered. A whopping 178kg of food was taken to the North Bristol Food Bank in Filton Avenue, which helps families and individuals in need at all times of the year. Between April 2017 and March 2018, 4,149 three-day emergency food supplies were provided to local people in crisis by North Bristol Foodbank, compared to 3,740 in the previous year. This is an increase of 11%. Of this number, 1,664 went to children. For Children in Need there
was also a bake sale run by the anti-bullying group and the school was taking part in the BBC national duck race during tutor time. Assistant headteacher Miss Richards said: “We saw the very best of Orchard students during Children in Need day. “There was a great response to the Food Bank appeal which students realise helps people in their own communities.”

An update from Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke
Bringing support together for elderly citizens At the start of November, I held a Senior Citizens Advice and Information Fair at Lincombe Barn, Downend. The exhibitors were a combination of intervention-based support providers catering for health or care needs that unfortunately affect older constituents, as well as activity and communitybased groups that help to keep people active in everyday life and provide an opportunity to learn new skills. Many constituents came along to hear information and advice from the exhibitors on a wide range of topics. It was great to be able to bring a range of those organisations together in one place for constituents to be able to drop by and discuss issues in person. Each November, the attention of the whole nation turns to Remembrance Sunday, which is a poignant reminder of the
enormous sacrifice made by service personnel in the defence of our freedom and way of life in both World Wars, as well as conflicts since. This year was particularly moving and significant because it was the centenary of the end of the First World War, but also because it fell on Remembrance Sunday itself. It was an honour to attend services and lay wreaths at remembrance events both at MOD Abbeywood, and at St Peter’s Church, Pilning. The Stoke Gifford British Legion, of which I am honoured to be Vice-President, has been doing fantastic work in raising money with the Poppy Appeal, so that the British Legion can continue

to do its fantastic work right across the country. I visited the Wild Place Project to discuss their plans for a new exhibit, Bear Wood, which will open in summer 2019. The exhibit is aimed to transform you back in time to when the Woodlands were inhabited by European brown bears, European wolves, Eurasian lynx and wolverine. The project highlights the effects of woodland loss on our native wildlife, as well as represents the past and present, as well as what is at stake. I am glad that Wild Place Project has included a classroom to allow for Bear Wood to be utilised for education. This project shows Wild Place's continued
commitment to developing our areas leisure offering, as well as to their conservation work. I also recently met with representatives from the Environment Agency and South Gloucestershire Council, as well as local resident and campaigner, Lisa Presland, to discuss plans for the improvement of flood defences that may mean the loss of 500 poplar trees in Pilning. I will continue to work to ensure that the views of local residents are heard. Air ambulance leaves Filton for new base Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) have taken up tenancy of a new air base in Almondsbury. The charity will share the facility with the National Police Air Service (NPAS), and currently have a ten-year tenancy agreement. Their helicopter took off from the new base for the first time last month, taking the medical team to a critical incident. The move is a huge milestone for the charity, who have been operating from a hangar on Filton airfield, which was one of the oldest in the country. In a move which would ensure stability for the life-saving charity, the landlords of the new base have offered GWAAC the opportunity to purchase the facility at a significantly reduced
price. GWAAC chief executive Anna Perry explains: “We’re thrilled to have moved into the new air base at Almondsbury, however with our current tenancy agreement we could be asked to leave again after ten years. “This could be extremely disruptive to our service. “Owning our air base will ensure we can continue to carry out our life-saving work well into the future. It’s unlikely we will have the opportunity to buy a facility like this again.” Russ Woolford, Assistant Operations Director for the National Police Air Service (NPAS) said: “We are delighted that NPAS Almondsbury is now operational. The state-of-theart air base, including a 520m lit Final Approach and Take Off
(FATO), is a great addition to our national network of bases.” Earlier this year, GWAAC launched an urgent appeal to help them raise the additional £1.25 million needed to fund the purchase. They are half way towards their target, but still have a long way to go. As a charity they rely on generous donations from
members of the public to stay operational. Excitingly, if they can raise another £315,000 then a generous local organisation has pledged to double this money! The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea. Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. There are now over 200 “sheds” across the country, with many more being developed. The group runs every Wednesday, from 9.30am-12.30pm.
