Residents moved out after cracks appear in flats

Residents in a Filton flats block were moved out after ‘significant cracks’ developed over the course of a day.

Some people were moved to hotels and others moved in with relatives after housing association provider Merlin closed part of the block in Shellard Road in order to carry out tests. One Merlin tenant has been offered an alternative home.

Merlin said it was a combination of foundations dug originally, trees and the dry summer we had.

n NEWS Cracks appear in flats block From Page 1 residents in the block of four flats – two Merlin customers and two leaseholders to move out while we investigated further.

“We secured the building and had structural engineers come out to dig inspection pits and investigate. They said the movement was caused by a combination of shallow foundations used when the building was initially built, the treeline at the back of the house and the exceptionally dry summer that we had.

“They did not think the building would move anymore, so we allowed the residents in the two least affected properties to return home.

“We deemed it too risky for one customer and one leaseholder to return as the movement has affected the plaster in their properties, which could fall off the walls in quite large sheets and cause injury. We have provided them with hard hats if they need to go into their properties to collect items.

“We are looking to rehouse

the customer, and are in almost daily contact with him at his daughter’s house. He has been offered several new properties.

“We also have regular contact with the leaseholders in the other property to discuss compensation for loss of rent.

“All the affected customers have been given compensation to cover loss of food and some other vouchers.

“Our surveyors have inspected all the other blocks in the area and we have gone through the repairs history to see if any other properties at risk can be identified. A few reports of cracks have occurred over the years but on inspection, we have not found anything significant. We have asked residents on the road to let us know if any other cracks develop.

“We will be doing structural work on the block, removing some of the trees on our land and speaking to the Council about the trees that are on their land.

We’re waiting for further test results before we can schedule this work.”

n NEWS Neighbourhood officers from Filton and other areas teamed up to target drivers who were endangering others on the roads by using hand-held mobile phones at the wheel.

PCs stopped six drivers using their mobiles in just 90 minutes during the operation on the A38 in Filton on Tuesday 29 November. All six were issued with fixed penalties – a £100 fine and three points on their licence.

Filton Neighbourhood PC Matt Griffin said: “We carried out the operation near Orchard School. Some of the drivers we stopped were on a school run, with children in their vehicles.

Road safety, especially around schools, is a priority, and we had positive comments from the pedestrians and cyclists.”

As well as issuing tickets, the officers explained that from the New Year drivers caught using a hand-held mobile phone behind the wheel will face increased penalties – a £200 fine and six points on their licence.

A ticket was also issued to a driver whose vehicle did not have a valid MOT certificate.

PC Griffin said: “Using a hand-held mobile phone while driving is an offence. We know that mobile phone use was a contributory factor almost 500 accidents in Britain in 2014, including 21 fatal and 84 serious accidents.

“Motorists should be focused on driving safely and with care for other road users, not on texts or social media updates.

We’re planning to run similar operations in future.”

Getting ready for the big Christmas Cut Down

A

LREADY famous for its “Choose and Cut” Christmas Trees, the owners of Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm also wish to remind their customers that they can reserve their own growing tree for cutting closer to Christmas. This ensures a fresher tree, and it also means you can come earlier for a better choice.

In our early days - it must have been about 2004 - I would get up very early each December morning, and cut down as many trees as I could before 8am, and then drag them down the field - one or two at a time to the car park where people would begin to turn up from 9am onwards. It was exhausting work, but great fun.

As demand increased, however, we had to find a better system, so we began to hand out saws to customers so that they could go into the field and choose and cut their own. It didn’t take long for the idea to catch on, and each year more and more people turned up expecting to cut their own tree, either bringing their own saw or expecting us to provide one.

One busy Saturday, I sent my dad out to B&Q to buy as many bow saws and gloves as he could, so that we could hand them out to eager customers. There were so many trees growing that a teepee I had put up amongst the Fraser Firs was pretty well hidden.

Apart from the health and safety concerns, we soon began to realise the havoc caused by unregulated cutting. By the

end of the season 2009, there were suddenly very few Christmas Trees left for 2010! And since a Christmas tree takes about 7 years to grow, not only were there no trees for 2010, but no trees for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, or 2016.

Somehow we muddled through those last 7 years, being very careful how many trees we sold each year from our own field, and nurturing our remaining stock. Every year, the situation slowly improved, and this year we are beginning to see a new forest of Christmas Trees emerge, which means more choice for our customers.

Eager not to repeat the mistakes of the past, we now have a new system in place.

We are restricting “choose and cut” to the dates of Saturday Nov26th to Sunday December 11th. If you want to come and reserve a tree during that time, but don’t want to cut it until closer to Christmas, that’s fine.

We’ll give you special ribbon and tag so that you can mark your tree, then you can come back when you’re ready any day up until Christmas Eve to cut and collect your tree.

Even better, bring your own ribbons and markers, so that you can properly mark your tree to make sure that no one cuts it down by mistake.

Residents urged to help foodbank feed the neighbours in need this Christmas

by Rebecca Day Filton residents are being encouraged to give early this Christmas and donate muchneeded items to a local foodbank.

The drive for donations has been launched by the South Gloucestershire Green Party and they are asking the public to donate food, sanitary products and Christmas treats.

North Bristol Food Bank, based in Ebenezer Church in Filton Avenue, handed out nearly 1,800 three-day emergency food parcels between April and September this year – an increase on the same period of time in 2015.

The foodbank has reported that the top reasons people are using the foodbank are delays and changes to benefits and low income.

Iain Hamilton, from the South Glos Green Party, said: “In our country – the fifth largest economy in the world – around a million people and rising are finding themselves dependent on food banks.

“We must pressure the Government to protect those ‘just managing’ before millions more require foodbanks just to survive.

“We need to change our n People in Filton of all ages are being asked for their views to help shape how the West of England region grows over the next few decades.

Consultation on the West of England Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) and Joint Transport Study (JTS) is open until December 19 to help draw up a blueprint for future housing, employment and infrastructure across the entire region.

Last month we teamed up with South Gloucestershire Council’s Road Safety Team to visit Filton’s primary schools to make sure the children know how to “Be Safe, Be Seen” on the roads in these winter days.

We know that older people, men, people in LGBT+ relationships may all be affected by domestic abuse, but are underrepresented in the reporting of this type of crime.

Abuse isn’t always physical violence – in the past 12 months (Nov 2015-Nov 2016) we made 59 arrests under the new “coercive control” powers, which tackle controlling behaviour and threats, humiliation and intimidation.

Residents warned to be vigilant after homes burgled Residents in Filton are urged to look out for their neighbours after police made a number of arrests for burglary.

Two 17-year-olds were arrested on Sunday, November 20, by officers investigating a burglary in Filton.

The break-in happened in the early hours of Wednesday, November 16, when the household was woken by the dog barking and found a car key had been stolen. Fortunately, the vehicle was fitted with an immobiliser and the thieves were unable to start it.

The suspects were later released on police bail while the investigation continues.

Officers also arrested a man after a householder disturbed someone in their home in Kingswood at about 8.40am on Monday, November 21.

Officers attended the scene immediately and arrested a man.

A 43-year-old man from Bristol remains in police custody at the time of writing.

Neighbourhood Inspector Clive Summerill said: “While South Gloucestershire has relatively low levels of burglary it’s really important for householders to look after their own and their neighbours’ property.

“If you see someone acting suspiciously please report it straight away.

“We have had a number of burglaries across the force area where thieves have stolen keys in order to take a car, so please put your keys safely out of sight.

Never leave them in the back of the door or in view of the letterbox.”

Bike and jewellery snatched in raids Police are appealing for information after two burglaries in Cheswick Village, which saw thieves steal a mountain bike, jewellery, cash, watches and perfume.

A flat in Long Down Avenue was targeted on Sunday, November 27, when the family were out between 10.40am and 1.35pm.

I’d ask anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time, who has seen the stolen items offered for sale, or who has any other information which could help our investigation to contact us.”

Elm Park ‘could’ be site for library Filton Library could - in theory - relocate to council buildings in Elm Park as a means of retaining staff hours which are set to be lost as past of cost savings.

A deabate has been going on regarding the future of the library most of this year.

A consultation is currently running on the plans which will see reduced staff hours - but an Open Access plan which will see the library open for around 80 hours per week, but only 26 hours staffed.

In response to councillor questions, South Glos Cultural Services Manager Martin Burton told the full Filton Town Council meeting that it would in theory be possible for savings to be made by relocating the library from its purpose-built premises at the Shield Retail Park. But he said it would have to be considered if this was feasible.

However the current plan for Open Access is likely to begin in August, with the full changes implemented by October 2017.

Open Access has been used elsewhere in the country and South Glos are trialling it at Bradley Stoke.

Mr Burton said the library consultation earlier this year attracted the biggest response South Glos had seen for such an exercise. The council needs to save £650,000 from its library budget as part of wider cost savings across South Glos.

Mr Burton said libraries had a crucial role to play, especially with the rise of the ‘digital agenda’ and he said it was important that people who did not have computer skills or hardware did not miss out. Cllr Adam Monk said his concern was that the changes could affect those who are socially excluded.

Councillors also raised concerns about security when Open Access was in place as there would be no staffing or monitored CCTV. Mr Burton explained that users would need to register and that the council would know who was in the library at any one time in the case of an incident.

And he told councillors that under 16s would not be able to use access as there were safeguarding issues if an under-16 was in the library on his or her own.

Fund in memory of Dan CHARITIES, individuals and voluntary groups working with young people are being invited to apply for grants in memory of Bishopston man Dan Hickey, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver last year.

His family has set up a fund, managed by the Quartet Community Foundation, to support initiatives that benefit people up to the age of 25. The focus is on drama and sport projects.

by Rebecca Day A group of senior citizens have bid an emotional farewell to their pensioner club, after a dramatic decline in numbers caused it to close.

The Filton Pensioner Association, based in St Andrew’s Methodist Church, saw its membership plummet from 200 to just 13 in over two decades, leaving the club unable to sustain itself.

Former club members have deemed the closure a “huge shame”.

A closing party was held on November 8 to celebrate the club’s history, and to thank those who had supported the association over the years.

Ron Starr, former club chairman, said: “It was wonderful that everyone came along on the last day – they were all really supportive. I couldn’t have wished for more.

“Sadly, quite a few of our members have passed away over the years, and we’ve not had many new people join us, so the numbers have gone down.”

The 90-year-old ran the club, which met every Tuesday, alongside his wife June for almost 10 years. They joined the association in the 1990s when it was originally based in Filton Community Centre.

It is unknown when the club was initially founded, but Ron has a photo of its members from 1961.

pensioners’ club The club often hosted local bands and musicians, including Mike and his Music, Four of the Best, the Filtones, Golden Oldies, the Singing Postman and pianist Harvey French.

Ron added: “My wife and I used to love dancing at the club – we’d do the quick step, the foxtrot, samba, and the waltz.

“We particularly used to like dancing to Mike and his Music.

I would sing along with him too sometimes –Wand’rin Star from the film Paint Your Wagon was my favourite.”

Bingo was also popular at the club, says Ron. Mike Vaughan, of Mike and his Music, started playing at the Filton Pensioner Association in 1994. He told filtonvoice: “I’m very disappointed about the closure.

“It seems that lots of other pensioner clubs are in similar situations – something needs to

Baseball cage is proposed for field

A group of baseball enthusiasts want to set up a ‘batting cage’ facility on Filton’s Elm Park.

They say the project, which would see a large mesh-type enclosed tent constructed for batting practice, would be ideally suited to the Elm Park playing fields.

The Bristol Batting Cage Management team wants a three-year lease on Elm Park and town councillors were given a brief outline of the project.

Mike Slade The field has been used by local football clubs for years.

With Filton Athletic, St Vallier and a few other teams using the pitches especially the top pitch which is the flattest and most sheltered from the wind. I am sure using the top pitch or the other football pitches would cause a lot of people to be very unhappy about this. I have no

objection to the baseball net but would strongly push my choice for it not to be on the position of existing football pitches.

Climbing frame planning dispute

Kirstie Barnes I say well done parents for providing such an amazing piece of play equipment for their children to enjoy. At least the children have continual play without everyone downing tools to go to the park!

A Filton couple had to pay £200 for planning permission after a complaint that their children’s climbing frame was affecting the privacy and outlook of a resident in the same street.

Just to meet increased demand the local NHS will have to provide almost 240 more acute beds, almost 600,000 more GP contacts and 12% more capacity in community services such as district nursing.

The NHS financial challenge is forecast to increase from

£72.4m in 2015/16 to £415.5m in 2020/21.

Health providers have to find over £240 millions in savings which I fear will lead to cuts in services for the sick and elderly unless we can persuade the Tory Government to fund the NHS to the levels that the other G7 Countries do.

UK has been one of the lowest spenders of any G7 country on healthcare as a proportion of

gross domestic product and the NHS is widely acknowledged to provide the most cost effective care of any developed nation.

The NHS is not unaffordable, but it is deprived of the funds it needs to meet demand effectively!

n HOW TO COOK TURKEY - WITH STUART GALE OF GALES FARM MEATS Christmas is just days away now and we face the daunting task of COOKING THE TURKEY! This once a year culinary feast, although a challenge, is really not that difficult.

First, you need a good quality bird to suit your family. The different types include traditional white or bronze turkey, or the easy to

carve boneless rolled turkey breast.

To prepare your bird n Remove the bag of giblets from the cavity. n Place the bird in a non-stick or foiled baking tin. n If using stuffing, put in the neck end of the turkey, cover with the excess skin and secure with a cocktail stick.

All you need for

n Rub some olive oil or butter over the bird and cover in streaky bacon. This helps prevent drying out during the cooking process. (You may stuff the cavity but that would increase the cooking time. You can also put an onion in to retain moisture.) n Cover the turkey with foil and put in a hot oven at 175, cook for 20 minutes per lb and 20 minutes extra. For example, a 12lb turkey would take 4hrs and 20 mins. n For these last 20 mins,

Volunteers from South Gloucestershire Guide Dogs with members of Filton Golf Club

Golfers team up in support of guide dogs

Local supporters of the Guide Dogs charity were delighted to be presented with a cheque for £1,572 by the members of Filton Golf Club.

Senior captain at the club Bob Suggitt used to be a volunteer puppy walker for Guide Dogs and decided to use his year as captain to help the cause and its South Gloucestershire fundraising

group. He said: “Throughout my year as senior captain, I held various golf competitions and an away day for the members, culminating in an auction, with the proceeds from each event going to Guide Dogs.”

Jan Peters, a guide dog owner, visited the club with her dog Celia to accept the cheque from Bob and to thank him

and the members for their support.

Jan, who is on her second guide dog, said “We would like to thank Filton Golf Club for their donation as this will help us to provide and train new guide dog partnerships that will enable more people with sight loss to gain the same freedom of movement as everyone else.”

Shakespeare festival

Twelve fantastic Orchard School Bristol students have taken part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

On Monday 21st October, they performed Hamlet to a large audience at the Tobacco Factory Theatre in Southville.

The show ran extremely smoothly and Orchard students did themselves proud, getting to grips with the difficult plot and language.

A huge well done to all involved!

Quidditch fun

n It was once a sport for only those of the wizarding world, but now students at Orchard School Bristol are among many to hop on

a broomstick and give Quidditch a whirl.

We welcomed players from the University of the West of England’s Quidditch team to teach over 50 of our students - involved in our Sports Leadership Academy - the rules of the game.

Originating from the pages of J K Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Quidditch has been adopted by ‘Muggles’ (a non-magic person) to become an internationally played sport.

Unfortunately, the law of gravity (and lack of magical powers) means that players run with their broomticks instead of fly, but all the basic rules still apply.

n SCHOOLS Students support peers with National Citizen Service National Citizen Service (NCS) graduates, Lucy Wall and Grace Browning are joining peers across South Gloucestershire and Stroud to help shape the future of the programme in the area.

The outstanding graduates from the Prospects NCS Summer 2016 programme have committed their efforts as future NCS ambassadors.

As ambassadors Lucy and Grace will actively encourage their peers to get involved in the NCS programme.

They will do this through supporting the programme in their own schools, gaining feedback from students and teachers.

To help them in their new roles each ambassador will receive first-class training from Prospects to equip them to volunteer in future programmes, continue to develop their community projects and work towards being employed for upcoming NCS programmes.

n NEWS IN BRIEF n Horfield Leisure Centre have launched a new exercise based cancer rehabilitation scheme called Energise. It is an innovative new exercise referral programme specifically for people who have been affected by cancer.

It is a partnership project between Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire Cancer Network, Bristol City Council, North Bristol NHS Trust and Sports and Leisure Management Limited. The programmes are carried out by either Chartered Physiotherapists, CanRehab, or Wright Foundation trained Exercise Instructors.

The programme is open to anyone aged 16 years or over, who is ready to exercise at any stage pre, during or after cancer treatment such as surgery or chemotherapy and is deemed by the referrer to have a stable condition. Participants can be referred by their medical professional or by a self-referral form at www.bristol.gov.uk/ energise

The Royal British Legion Stoke Gifford Branch thanks student volunteers for their help

Delight as £50k raised for appeal Local Poppy Appeal fundraisers are celebrating the volunteers and supporters who have helped them bring in a huge £50,000 for the cause.

The Stoke Gifford branch of the Royal British Legion, which also covers Filton, Little Stoke, Stoke Lodge and Bradley Stoke, had their 2015/16 total confirmed

by RBL head office and are now getting ready to host an annual thank you dinner for volunteers.

The 2016/17 Poppy Appeal started on October 1 and the branch has had a very busy “Poppy Fortnight” from late October to Remembrance Sunday, November 13. The 2016/17 year carries on until September 30, 2017, and the branch will be fundraising throughout the year.

Branch spokesman David Bell said: “Our great fundraising has only been possible because of the great generosity of the public; the many businesses and other organisations who allow us to collect; and our great Stoke Gifford Branch members and volunteers who play such a big part in the fundraising. And, of course, a big thank you to the local media who help us raise awareness of the Poppy Appeal and the welfare work of the Royal British Legion.”

Katy is a local girl, born in Bristol and who grew up living over her dad’s bakery on Gloucester Road.

Now after an overlong break from our city she has returned with her husband to put down roots back in her home town.

Katy graduated in July 2010 from the Royal Veterinary College in London, after which she worked for several small animal practices and predominantly the RSPCA in London.

While she loves all aspects of veterinary work, Katy really enjoys surgery and we anticipate her being a great asset to our practice.

Since starting here, Katy and her husband have adopted a gorgeous golden Labrador who is busy making himself at home and learning about life sharing a home with their two cats!

n SHIELD ROAD PRIMARY CHRISTMAS FAYRE

Choir, coffee and cakes for Christmas While most of Filton was still tucked up in bed on Sat 3rd December, the Friends of Shield Road School (FOS-R) were out before 6:30am to put the finishing touches to this year’s Christmas Fayre. The annual event, now in its third year has become something of a community favourite and the hard work put in by FOS-R volunteers was rewarded with decent weather and a bumper turn out by our friends in the community.

There was something for everyone with stalls selling Christmas crafts, beautiful hand-made baby clothes, festive treats, and jewellery. One regular trader travelled all the way from Caldicott to take part.

The large crowd was entertained by the School Choir which was put together by the school staff especially for the event and was refreshed by the Christmas café that was doing a roaring trade in quality cakes, “posh coffee” and hot chocolate.

Outside the hall, Santa was in his grotto and the queue was constant for the entire event.

One of the event’s unique elements is our Christmas tree sale that has become a firm favourite at the fayre. The trees sold are top quality and are at

a very good discount. This year a full third of the trees had sold before the doors opened and next year we plan to take more advance orders.

One former pupil of the school from the 1940s said: “It’s lovely to see my old school doing so well and the children enjoying themselves. It’s a really a lovely event for the whole community to enjoy.”

Louise Davies, event organiser said: “The Christmas Fayre has become a labour of love for FOS-R and we there late the night before, up early on the morning collecting trees and had been working hard for months for this to be the best it can. I would like to thank all of our sponsors helpers, school staff and of course the children for the effort put in to deliver the Fayre and for getting into the spirit of things. The FOS-R group is very committed and we pride ourselves on providing a quality and fun event. We are still counting the income but it looks like we will have exceeded last year’s which itself was a record.

“FOS-R have just co funded a brand new suite of laptops and the money we make today will go towards funding science and forest school based activities.”

n CHRISTMAS MESSAGES AND SERVICE TIMES Dear Friends, There is a story told about a political journalist, based abroad, who asks each of three ambassadors the question, “What do you want for Christmas?” He duly reported that the American Ambassador had wanted “world peace”; the French Ambassador had wanted “trade justice”; and, much to the bemusement of his readership, the British Ambassador had wanted “A small bottle of medium sherry, please.” Although the British Ambassador’s wish was a modest one – for which he may be commended – it was a self-centred wish which did not extend to the needs of others...

At Christmas time, many of us know exactly what we want: yet many of us are at a loss to find anything that we really want – or need. The Christmas question,

for us as Christians, is not what we want – but what does God want?

Our world is presently a very troubled place beset with uncertainty, fear and conflict.

What the birth of Jesus has to tell us is that the time of waiting is over.

Everything humanity longs for – essentially, that we are valued; that we matter; that life really does really have a purpose; and that we truly are loved – is caught up in the birth of the baby in a manger at Bethlehem.

This little one grew to be the inspiring and revolutionary teacher in Galilee - the man for others who worked miracles which transformed lives and who went on to prove the Love of God for all of us in the ultimate self-giving on the Cross when everything that prevents

human love from flourishing was defeated by Love Himself. Yet, the world - and even the Church - still seem to be waiting... ...waiting for something to happen that will change things for us and make things better when, all the time, hidden in our midst, God has already changed us and the world. It just needs us to see it and be changed!

It is my prayer that Christmas should be a festival of answered questions for all who are needy, all who are seeking. The answers come with the good news of Jesus, who is Christ the Lord.

The answers come from God who became what we are, that we might become what He is.

I’m never ready for Advent, for this season of busy preparation!

This year however, is different.

Due to an operation, I have found myself grounded and in a unique situation; for once, I’m ready! Ready for the anticipation, the excitement, the practicalities, and ready to reflect on the year gone by.

And what a year it’s been.

Moments of joy, but moments of pain also. The world seems different somehow.

I’m sure I won’t be the only one to feel a little concerned about the apparent societal shift that seems to have taken place over the last twelve months.

At home and abroad the world seems a little more uncertain. It’s as though we are on the edge of something, something shrouded in darkness.

Yet Christmas is coming. Christmas; the birth of the Christ child, the institution of light, the renewal of hope.

Whatever is happening in the world, whatever is happening in our lives, Christmas brings a wonderful opportunity to open our hearts to the renewing light of Christ. It brings us the gift of goodness, of hope and of love, here and now.

But more than that, it stands as an immense moment of light, bringing the potential to dispel the darkness of the world. The light that is coming, is one that will perpetually shine out in the darkness. Claim it for yourself, and use it as a symbol of hope, a symbol of compassion and most importantly, a symbol of love this Christmastime and beyond.

n BOOK REVIEW WITH FILTON LIBRARY

Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh Reviewed by a Filton Library Reader Recently shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2016, Eileen is a literary crime novel (of sorts) set in blue-collar, smalltown New England in the middle of last century.

The first-person narrator reminds the reader immediately of modern feminist Gothic novels such as Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar or Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle: a young woman who, though she is psychologically acute and almost painfully self-aware, is also coltish, clumsy and damaged, an outsider in her own life.

The book doesn’t reach the heights of those two towering novels, but you have to admire Moshfegh’s ambition for aiming her first novel in that direction.

Eileen herself is a dishevelled young woman who lives in a squalid old house with her drunk and abusive father, and works in the administrative department of the local youth correctional facility.

Her inner life consists of paranoid ramblings about the rest of the townsfolk,

occasional bursts of homicidal fantasy aimed mostly towards her father, and strange ritualistic behaviour.

Since her mother died, she relates, she no longer keeps house for herself or her remaining parent, instead preferring to ply him with gin to see if (or when) he expires.

Into her squalid existence comes the glamorous Rebecca, a figure straight out of a 1940s film noir, and a chain of events is set in motion that may free Eileen from the bonds that hold her to a life she despises.

The book is not, perhaps, quite the sum of its parts: the early pages promise a convoluted inner world that is not explored as thoroughly as one might hope, and the elements of the thriller that inform the second half can seem somewhat forced (if not tacked-on).

But it’s a blackly-funny, well-written book, a dark and compelling tale, and you won’t forget about its protagonist for a long, long time.

Firm’s largest ever airliner takes off for maiden flight The largest and most powerful twin-engined airliner ever produced by Airbus took its maiden flight in November.

The first A350-1000 took off at Blagnac in Toulouse, France, on November 24 with a crew of six on board for the test flight.

Benefiting from the experience of the original A350900 test campaign in 2014, the A350-1000’s development programme will be shorter – under one year for the three aircraft.

The aircraft’s entry into airline service is scheduled for the second half of 2017.

The A350-1000 has a longer fuselage to accommodate 40 more passengers than the A350900, and features a modified wing trailing-edge, new six-wheel

Honour our community heroes

Filton residents are being invited to celebrate the community’s heroes as nominations open for the South Gloucestershire Council Chair's Community Awards 2017.

The annual awards recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution local unpaid volunteers make to life in South Gloucestershire.

This year’s celebration of community work and volunteering takes place in March and residents have until Monday, January 16, to nominate their local heroes.

For the first time, this year the council is also accepting group nominations as well as individual nominations. Suggestions for nominations include those who have contributed to community development, promoting equality, arts, sports, play, environment, working with older or young people, advice and

‘Team Tache’ focus on men’s health Council staff and councillors have been raising awareness of men’s health by sporting some unusual top-lip topiary.

Members of South Gloucestershire’s public health team and health scrutiny committee chair Toby Savage all grew moustaches during November as part of the international Movember campaign.

Mr Savage said: “It is unfortunately true to say that men’s health in England and Wales still lags behind the health of women and South Gloucestershire is no exception to this trend. Reducing this imbalance is one of the main priorities of the South Gloucestershire Health and Wellbeing Board.”

Men in Sheds in Filton is extending its hours to meet demand. The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea. Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. There are now over 200 “sheds” across the country, with many more being developed. The group runs every Wednesday, from 9.30am-12.30pm.
