News Fish bar owner says trade hit as outdated hygiene score is published by Rebecca Day A fish and chip shop owner has expressed his disappointment over recent press coverage of his business’s outdated hygiene rating. It was published in a daily newspaper that Dolphin Fish Bar in Gloucester Road North has a one out of five hygiene rating, which means “major improvement necessary”. However, shop manager Nurad Ali says that this is out of date as they have since been upgraded to three following a recent visit from South Gloucestershire Council’s food safety officer. Nurad explains that the rating of one – published by the council to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website – was given to Dolphin Fish Bar over the summer for not having the correct paperwork available, as he was away on holiday. The council revisited the fish bar last month and awarded the business three out of five, meaning “generally satisfactory”. Nurad, who has managed the shop for over two years, says that
the council is due to return in the new year, where he hopes to be upgraded to a four or five for retiling the kitchen floor. It takes a month for the rating to update on the FSA website. Nurad told Filtonvoice: “I was really disappointed and surprised to see our rating on a newspaper website. We have had some of our customers complaining – it has not been good for our business. “We have great food and great hygiene, and very loyal customers who love our food. We have one customer who remembers when the shop opened 65 years ago.” He also criticised the newspaper for not contacting the shop first before publishing the story. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “Following the most recent visit by the Food Safety Team, the Dolphin Fish Bar was awarded a hygiene rating score of three. “After an unannounced visit in July 2015, the food retailer initially received a hygiene rating score of one and at the time

MP’s delight as veterans’ charity given cash boost
officers informed them of the work required to comply with current food hygiene legislation. “The retailer began making the suggested improvements and then applied for their hygiene rating to be reassessed. Following a further visit at the end of November, the hygiene rating was increased to a three (satisfactory).” Local establishments that have the top hygiene rating, “very good”, include Maniks, the new Greggs Bakery, Caspian Fish Bar and China Capital. Ratings are awarded on how hygienically the food is handled; the condition of the structure of the buildings; and how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe. The FSA says that every food retailer should be able to reach the top rating.
Alabaré, the charity behind the Bristol Homes for Veterans programme which has a house in Filton, was given good news in Chancellor George Osborne’s Autumn Statement with an award of £903,000 from the Government’s distribution of banking fines. This new funding will be used by Alabaré to develop their existing support and provide new accommodation for homeless veterans in the Bristol area. The news was welcomed by Filton MP Jack Lopresti, who has been working with Mr Osborne to secure this funding. He said: “I am delighted that the Chancellor has decided to help Alabaré Veterans Charity build bespoke accommodation for vulnerable veterans of working age by giving them over £900,000 of LIBOR funds. I have visited the Alabaré Veterans homes in my constituency a number of times and seen what a fantastic impact they have.”

Shopping extravaganza raises £1,650
Two Filton residents, Jeanne Clements and Sian Allan, recently held a Christmas Shopping Extravaganza in aid of charity. They’d organised a similar event for many years whilst involved in school fundraising. Once no longer involved in this a lot of people asked if they were still going to organise the event as it had been so successful and people loved coming along. After thinking about it they thought why not? Let’s hold the event annually for charity. Two of the charities to benefit each year will be Filton Park PreSchool Playgroup plus BRACE (Funding Research into Alzheimer’s). The third charity will change each year - last year was the National Autistic Society and this year they chose the Meningitis Research Foundation. Filton Town Council roundup By-election called for Northville A by-election will be held next month for the vacant seat on Filton Town Council following the death of Cllr Doug Daniels. Cllr Daniels was a Conservative for the Northville ward. The town council currently has 12 councillors - six Labour, three Conservative, two UKIP and one Independent. It is understood the cost to taxpayers to hold the election is around £5,000 and was called after 10 residents of the ward petitioned the town council urging the position to be filled. The official notice of the election was being posted on December 11th, with nominations to be filed by December 21. The poll itself will take place on Thursday, January 21. Filton last held a byelection during the previous council when UKIP councillor Keith Briffett was elected. During the last council
resident John Beacham was co-opted on to the council when a vacancy arose. In May, following the elections, a vacancy was created after there were just four candidates who stood for five vacancies for Northville in the May election. Labour’s Ben Scott became the authority’s 13th member after being co-opted on to the authority
Council discusses future for pool Filton Town Council could offset 80% of its business rates if it took on charitable status.
The council has been looking at costs of running the leisure centre in the wake of last year’s financial problems which saw a deficit of £98,000 and a considerable hit on reserves. Since then, cost cutting and an improvement in the councilrun Ratepayers bar have helped improve matters but there are still fears that the sports and leisure centre costs will remain prohibitive. In October, councillors rejected an appraisal project to look at future options for the leisure centre, including the possibility if it being outsourced to a private provider. Councillors rejected the
appraisal which would have cost £5,000-10,000 but instead set up a working party to assess the situation. The working party has been looking at whether the council should see the leisure centre as purely a ‘service’ or whether it becomes a profit making ‘business’. They put forward the idea of the leisure centre becoming formulated as a charity, with possibly an employed dedicated fundraiser. Cllr Adam Monk said charity status would give a new charity 8% relief on business rates, which stand at £5,000 per month. At an earlier meeting, Clr Ian Scott said: “It’s coming to the crunch time - we either put up council tax precept to pay for the pool or we decide it is not sustainable.” Cllr Alan Tink said: “We need to make it viable. Some residents would be willing to pay extra for the pool but others would not.”

Parents raise concerns ‘pupils not given time to eat lunches’
by Rebecca Day A local primary school has come under scrutiny over the amount of time children are given to eat their packed lunch. The concerns have been raised by parents, who say that their children are only getting 15 minutes to eat, which includes having to queue up for their lunch box. Parent Leigh Bryant says that he became aware of the issue when his daughter kept returning home from school hungry, with food left in her lunch box. He said: “When I asked my daughter why she wasn’t eating her food, she said that she didn’t have time, so I asked a number of other parents, who said that they were also having the same problem. “We’ve received a letter from the school saying that they are trialling a new system, but why were we not consulted first? We need to know how long our children are getting to eat.” Mr Bryant says that he was also told by his daughter’s teacher that she was not eating her food because she spends too much time talking. He added: “It’s totally reasonable for children to chat while eating. The time they’re getting to eat wouldn’t be acceptable in a workplace, so how can it be acceptable in a primary school? We’re really not very happy, and we’d like to see it changed.” However, head teacher at Filton Hill, Kirsten Lemming, has responded robustly, saying that the children are given at least 20 minutes to eat their lunch, which is in keeping with other schools, and has dismissed claims that children with hot dinners are given longer to eat their food. Lunch boxes are also ready for the children on a trolley in the hall when they are called in to eat, says Ms Lemming. She said: “We are currently trialling a new system in order to

Pre-school brings Christmas cheer to the homeless
The children and families in Abacus Pre-school at Filton Hill Primary have been very busy the last few weeks holding many different events to collect items for a homeless charity based in the city centre. They have been supporting a Methodist church homeless project in midland road for the past few years and feel it’s very important to share at Christmas. Through Wrong Trousers days, Halloween fancy dress, woolly hat day and many more events the parents and children have kindly donated lots of tins, food, scarfs, gloves etc to help give those who are less fortunate some Christmas cheer.

A double celebration for store team by Rebecca Day There was cause for two celebrations at Asda in Filton this month. Not only was it the store’s second birthday, but also two of its prominent staff members have just returned to work after battling cancer. Anne Maddox, the store’s Community Life Champion, has been off work for 16 months with breast cancer, and store manager Dave Rolph has been away for nine with pancreatic cancer. Both have now returned to Asda in Abbeywood Retail Park after undergoing various treatments, including chemo and radiotherapy, and say that they are looking forward to better times. The occasion was celebrated with a cake cutting and Christmas lunch for all of its 250 employees. Anne, who is in charge of the work that Asda does in the

Manager Dave says that it is great to be back at the store. Town council accused of ‘favouring twinning group over local charities’
by Rebecca Day The chairman of a Filton charity has criticised the town council for having its priorities in the wrong order. Brian Smith, chair of Filton Chest and Heart, says that he is “aggrieved” that the twinning association is allowed to rent the town council-owned Ratepayers Arms for free, while charities are now having to pay. Mr Smith adds that Filton Town Council favours the twinning association, which links Filton with St Vallier sur Rhone in France and Witzenhausen in Germany, while questioning how much benefit the group brings to the wider community. However, Filton Town Council says that it is a civic duty to take part in twinning, which was developed following the Second World War to promote cross-border projects of mutual

It was then decided at a town council finance meeting that free rental would continue to be provided to Filton Twinning, and but Filton Chest and Heart.
Mr Smith said: “Next year we celebrate our 70th anniversary and in the last 10 years alone, we have donated over £30,000 of equipment [to local practices and hospitals]. We also hold a number of events throughout the year for patients with heart and chest issues. “It’s not fair to push a charity to one side and favour a community group that doesn't have as much benefit for Filton people.”
Filton Chest and Heart has been offered a grant in kind of £250 a year by the town council, under the provision that the charity provides information on its financial situation, constitutional documents, income over the last 12 months, plus any expenditure. However, Mr Smith has declined the offer, saying that it is “farcical” that the charity needs to go through the effort for £250 a year. He added: “If we have to find somewhere else, so be it – the committee also agrees.” Lesley Reuben, town clerk and chief financial officer, said: “The council has a civic duty to twin with other towns – Filton Twinning Association carry out this work for and on behalf of the council so it would be wrong to charge them for doing so.” l Letters, Page 18

Knutty Knitters on tour again
The infamous Knutty Knitters who created a media storm with their life-sized knitted nativity scene are touring Bristol once again this year to raise money for St Peter’s Hospice. The group of six women, who were colleagues at St Teresa’s Primary and are dubbed ‘The Knutty Knitters’, hit the headlines after creating their special ‘knitivity’ scene. They will be visiting a series of shops, schools, churches and public areas across the city to raise money and awareness in memory of a dear friend who was cared for by the charity. Since launching the ‘knitivity’ the ladies have added a new camel, donkey and an angel to complete the scene which has raised in excess of £80,000 for Bristol’s only adult hospice and have appeared on BBC’s The One Show and in Hello Magazine. we_poppin ad 87x120:Layout 1

The knitters - Alison, Jean Richards, Anne Iles, Eileen Agnew, Pat Dardis and Julia Worth - worked together at St Teresa’s Primary and started knitting together in their spare time. When founding member of the Knutty Knitters, Christine Walsh, died of bowel cancer at St Peter’s Hospice in December 2011 the group decided to raise money in her memory. St Peter’s Hospice community fundraiser Petra Littlefair said: “The Knutty Knitters have been fantastic fundraisers for us so to welcome them back for a tour this year is very exciting.” As Bristol’s only adult hospice, St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members. Christmas comes early to hospital wards as charity hands out awards
Hospital departments and community services at North Bristol NHS Trust will be receiving gifts of up to £3,000 to spend on equipment in the runup to Christmas. Southmead Hospital Charity and the Southmead Hospital League of Friends have teamed up to hand out £50,000 over the festive season in the Christmas Cracker awards scheme. The donations are being handed out every weekday, with a bumper award of £10,000 to be presented on Christmas Eve. Staff were asked to apply for the prize fund explaining what equipment they would purchase to help their patients, with 119 applications received by the judging panel. A total of 18 projects will be receiving a gift, and the first to
benefit was the Acute Medical Unit on December 1, which has received £2,550 to buy reclining chairs that allow patients’ relatives to stay overnight. After its first popular outing in the summer the “comedy” photo booth returned and the queue for a particularly interactive Santa’s Grotto was long and constant throughout the day. Outside, in the playground, the school’s unique Christmas tree sale did a roaring trade against a festive musical backdrop with sales up around 80 per cent on last year. One customer said: “I advance ordered my tree this year such was the quality of the last one I bought from the school and Santa is absolutely fantastic!” The highlight of the event was the performance of the School Choir. This group was made up of Years 1-6 pupils and was formed by the staff and children in their own time especially for the event. The 45 members were decked out in festive Christmas Jumpers and could not wait to perform. They proved to be a big draw and entertained everyone with their mixture of popular Christmas favourites. “The school has raised its profile in the community in
recent years both academically and socially,” said Louise Davies, Chair of the Friends of Shield Rd (FOS-R) who ran the event. “While it is of course important to raise funds for the children, we work really hard to run a quality, affordable and fun event that can enjoyed by our friends, neighbours and the wider general community. It was so nice to see so many people without a current connection to Shield Road with us today. We would particularly like to thank Ocean for their support with publicity and the literally dozens of local businesses who traded today or gave raffle prizes.” The school has recently expanded with state of the art facilities to provide a second reception class. Christmas event - Charborough Rd Primary
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Charborough Road Primary School held their traditional Christmas Fair on Saturday, 28th November. The event is a firm Filton favourite, with children, parents, relatives, the local community and businesses all coming together to have some festive fun and raise funds for the school. Mandy Holcombe (Mum to Isobel, Yr 3) said “We love the school Fair as it officially marks the start of Christmas!” Becky Price, Friends Of School Fair Co-Ordinator, said: “The Fair is one of our biggest events of the year, and as well as helping us to buy muchneeded new equipment it also supplements things like school trips and outings making sure all children get the opportunity to go.” This year’s event saw the return of the traditional games rooms run by Year 6 children with a brand new game - ‘Surprise Stocking’ where children had to guess which objects (including sprouts and candy canes) were stitched inside a sock by feeling them. The children who got the most correct guesses and won first prizes were Stephen Chorley in KS2 and CJ Casson in KS1. Our ‘legendary’ giant luxury hamper raffle was won by Jo Watts (Mum to Aeryn, Yr 5) and the Christmas tree auction winning bidder was Laura Booth (Mum to Georgia-Rae, Yr 3). Of course no fair would be complete without a visit from the guests of honour Mother and Father Christmas. Reece Williams in Year 3 said: “Mother Christmas
was really friendly and knows a lot of things!” Overall the fair raised in excess of a whopping £4,000 for the school. Nicola Bailey, Head of Charborough Road, said “Our Christmas Fairs are fantastic; not only do they raise huge amounts for the benefit of our children, they bring our wider school community together. Love it!” Jo Knight, Chair of Charborough Road Friends Of School said ‘As ever, we couldn’t have done this without the amazing support of all our school staff, parent volunteers, the children who helped run events, our local business sponsors and everyone else who attended, donated or helped out in any way. ‘A buzz for learning’ as Ofsted declares Orchard School ‘good’
Ofsted has delivered a glowing verdict on Orchard School Bristol which, they say, delivers very definitely on its vision ‘Inspire today... empower for life’. Inspectors who visited the school last month said teachers have high expectations for students and they observed ‘a real buzz of learning in the classroom’. Orchard School was rated ‘Good’ with inspectors noting ‘a harmonious atmosphere evident between students from different backgrounds’ and an environment where they ‘feel safe and enjoy school’. They added that “the exceptional relationships at the school are testament to the quality of the high quality spiritual, moral and cultural education”. The school was praised across
all four of the inspection areas – leadership and management; quality of teaching, learning and assessment; personal development, behaviour and welfare; and outcomes for students. Head teacher Dr Helen Holman, above, was described
as ‘communicating the very highest of expectations with regard to quality of teaching... and determined to ensure every student is successful’. She said: “We are thrilled that the inspectors have recognised the journey this school has been on. “Our motivation is now to continue and improve further. “We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to deliver the best possible outcomes for every student of every background.” The inspectors noted: • “Students receive highquality spiritual, moral, social and cultural education. Abbeywood Community School St Teresa’s Primary
St. Teresa’s Primary School Chaplaincy Team have been very busy campaigning for the Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal. The Chaplaincy Team led assemblies across the school sharing information about the charity and even showed a video of children in a refugee camp receiving Christmas shoeboxes from last Christimas. Nearly 40 boxes, full of gifts, toys and toiletries were sent to the distribution centre where over the next month many children across Europe, less fortunate than us, will be receiving their special gift box.
During Term 1, Year 11 were invited to apply to become student ambassadors, representing ACS in many aspects of school life. There was a good field of candidates, allowing Ms Gilmore and Mrs Amel to choose 23 who would be given the role, and the much sought after purple T shirt. They are involved in acting as learning coaches for younger students; event organisation; being cultural ambassadors who are involved in meeting and greeting any overseas visitors; being antibullying ambassadors to work with younger students; and working directly on a 1:1 basis with younger students who need support.

Academy making waves as Robert Peston drops in
Staff and students at Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy have featured in a national radio programme about the future of education broadcast this month. The BBC’s economics editor Robert Peston, who has recently joined ITV, visited the academy to speak to students and staff for the Radio 4 programme, “What Should We Teach Our Kids?” He was taken on a tour by academy principal Rhian Priest, above, and saw facilities such as the 3D printer and CNC machines in action, as well as interviewing several current students. He also met Adam Sullivan, who left the academy last summer and is now on an apprenticeship with global engineering firm Atkins. The BBC documentary team also visited the Bristol Robotics Laboratory at the University of the West of England. “As Bristol’s University Technical College, it was fitting that the BBC should want to speak to us about the future of education – what and how our
young people should learn and how they should be prepared for a working life which is set for huge change over the coming years,” said Ms Priest. “Some of the key skills and disciplines of the future, such as 3D printing, CNC machining and robotics, which will also feature in the documentary, are already an integral of students’ learning experiences here at BTE Academy. Our emphasis on self-confidence, self-esteem and things like the ability to give presentations was also in evidence in the exemplary way all our students handled themselves on the day – none of them were ‘phased’ by having a microphone put in front of them and being interviewed by a national broadcast journalist.” BTE Academy is based on the Filton/Stoke Gifford border and is one of England’s University Technical Colleges, catering for pupils from the aged 14 to 19 and with a strong focus on STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is sponsored by the University of the West of England and GKN Aerospace and also receives support from Airbus, RollsRoyce and the Royal Navy. “What Should We Teach Our Kids?” was broadcast on Radio 4 on Tuesday, December 8

Not happy with the town council
Twinning visitors present Filton with gifts in the community garden
Come on Filton Town Council, what about fair play & an even playing field? My reason for saying this is that as I am Chairman of Filton Chest & Heart Committee, our local charity, and I feel aggrieved that we are now being charged rent by the Town Council for our meetings & events. I received a letter from the Town Clerk & Chief Financial Officer of Filton Town Council, informing me that due to the financial position of the council, they can no longer provide free use of the pavilion for any of its users. Having attended the finance meeting, (where public are unable to speak), I find that the Community Garden & Council Allotments will get it free, (which is fair enough), leaving only Chest & Heart Committee, & Twinning Association. It was then decided that Twinning would also get it free, but we would have to pay. We are a registered Charity with The Charity Commission, but they are only a community group. According to the town clerk, as the twinned towns were in Filton this year, they were carrying out a civic duty on behalf of the council. They also applied for a grant of £1,800 of ratepayers’ money, for lunch for 120 people@ £15 per head. This grant was applied for by their chairman, who lives in Keynsham, who commented that insufficient Filton residents had offered hosting for the visitors. After 40 years, perhaps this organisation no longer serves its purpose? Having asked councillors what Twinning does for Filton people, there was no reply, whereas Filton Chest & Heart have social events for our patients & pay for equipment for our local doctors’ surgeries, Cardiology & North Bristol Lung

Centre at Southmead Hospital. This benefits not only patients registered with us, but our community in general. Next year we celebrate our 70th anniversary, and in the last 10 years alone, we have donated over £30,000 of equipment. Therefore, if we have to pay rent so should Twinning, because for the next two years they will be going to our twinned towns with town councillors & South Glos councillors. Raja fills a gap for fresh and local fare by launching his first shop
by Rebecca Day People living in Cheswick Village won’t have to venture very far for fresh food with the launch of a new shop. Fair & Fresh Produce @ Square, which is set to open its doors on December 12, is the venture of Cheswick resident Raja Mizan. It is Raja’s first business and he says that the idea came out of necessity for a convenience store selling fresh items. He says that his aim is to become the biggest independent store for fresh produce in the area. Raja said: “Being a resident of Cheswick Village, we have to drive to Asda or Fishponds to buy fresh products, which is not always convenient. “Hopefully, Fair & Fresh Produce @ Square will solve this problem, not only for us
but for the rest of the residents of Cheswick Village and
surrounding areas.” Besides fresh fruit and
vegetables, the shop will also be stocking fresh meat, poultry and dairy products. Most of the items will be sourced from Bristol, with Asian goods stocked from London and Birmingham. Raja says that he is also trying to source locally produced organic products, too. He will be employing two or three part-time staff, and one full-time. In the future, he hopes to sell his products online, and deliver them to the doorsteps of customers in the local area. The store will be opening on December 12 at 10am. South Gloucestershire’s winter gritting fleet is being readied for the first serious cold spell of the winter and this year they are extending coverage of cycle and shared use paths in Filton and other areas. With weather forecasts showing that temperatures are set to drop, the council’s winter maintenance team are ready to distribute hundreds of tonnes of salt across the district’s transport network as winter weather sets in. The council regularly grits around 30 per cent of South Gloucestershire’s road network when ice has been predicted. Head of the council’s StreetCare service Mark King said: “This year we are extending our salt treatment of cycle and shared use paths in the district. “From mid-December we will be using some new equipment
which will help us grit many of our key cycle commuter routes.”
Net gain Residents and businesses in Filton are the latest to benefit from the rollout of fibre broadband across South Gloucestershire. Council funding, combined with contributions from Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) and BT means there will be £1.54 million of investment in extending the coverage of fibre broadband. There will also be expanded coverage in Bradley Stoke, Chipping Sodbury, Filton, Kingswood, Rangeworthy and Thornbury.

After just over three years of academic study mixed with practical on-the-job training, 18 apprentices have collected their BEng degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of West of England and will go on to Engineering roles within the leading aircraft manufacturer. Airbus introduced the Undergraduate Apprenticeship programme in Filton in 2012 and it is believed to have been the first scheme of its type to be run in England.
Metrobus views A consultation on preliminary designs for the Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension (CPME) has launched. The CPME is an extension of the MetroBus network which once complete will connect to other MetroBus routes which are
currently being built, including the South Bristol link and Ashton Vale to Temple Meads. South Glos is proposing the CPME runs between Bristol Parkway Station and The Mall bus station, via Hatchet Road, Gipsy Patch Lane, through the former Rolls Royce East Works site, along North Way, and through the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood.* Consultation material summarising the CPME proposals is available at www. southglos.gov.uk/CPMEconsult where you can also submit your comments online. Mayor proposes city gives £500,000 to make aerospace museum a reality A half-a-million-pound contribution to the Bristol Aerospace Museum could be made by Bristol City Council if it approves a new proposal by Mayor George Ferguson as part of its annual budget setting process. The proposed museum, set to be based at Filton, has already won planning permission and it is hoped that the financial support from Bristol will give the project the final boost it needs to get the plans off the ground. The aerospace museum and learning centre will celebrate Bristol’s aerospace heritage as well as provide a permanent home for the world-famous Concorde near the site where it was originally built. Ever since the Bristol Aeroplane Company was founded in 1910, Bristol has been the birthplace of a series of great feats of aerospace engineering, most recently with the creation of the Airbus. The site is also still used as a base for large engineering firms such as BAE Systems and Rolls Royce. Bristol City councillors approved a motion in September this year which asked the city to lend its support to the venture. Mayor George Ferguson is now proposing a £500,000 capital donation as part of the council’s annual budget setting process. He said: “Following support at full council and a specific request by the Conservative group and approaches by regional MPs and the leader of South
Gloucestershire, I am delighted to announce this proposal to help fund the construction of the Bristol Aerospace Museum and learning centre. As the last resting place of the Concorde and a supreme record of Bristol’s
aerospace industry, the museum has the potential to be a major boost for tourism, education and the local economy. “The Bristol region has long been a home for the British aerospace industry and it is only
right that we pull together now with our partner authority, South Gloucestershire, and make the most of this great opportunity. “I have very much wanted to see this museum become a reality. I believe in its potential to contribute to our mission as a learning city and to improve the lives of Bristolians both sides of the North Bristol border. “After much hard work I am glad to say that we can now show Bristol’s commitment to the project and to working cooperatively across administrative borders.” The mayor will put forward his final budget proposal on January 12, following consultation with residents. Are you ready to be moved? I ‘borrowed’ this line from an entertainment company’s advertising campaign, but I think it fits Christmas perfectly! Busy in all the preparations, I, probably like you, find it difficult to fit everything in. I can guarantee that no matter what my intentions, I will still be wrapping presents on Christmas Eve…I’m sure I won’t be the only one! The problem is, the most important item on the to do list gets left until the end, if it gets done at all: Getting ourselves ready. Ready to be moved. Christmas means different things to all of us. Ultimately though it is the celebration of God coming into our world in the person of Jesus Christ. Unless we truly understand what this means, it may seem like something that isn’t relevant to our lives today. Something which is out of date. Out of date and out of place. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Into the darkness and sadness of this world, comes a light. A tiny, vulnerable spark of light in the form of a child. A child to be loved. Opening our hearts to this child can be the most amazing gift we can give ourselves this Christmas. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving. It will inspire us, guide us, protect us and love us. It has the potential to change our lives. Are you ready to be moved? If not, get ready. Because if you truly enter the spirit of Christmas, your lives will be transformed in ways you could never even imagine. With prayers and blessings, to you and your loved ones this Christmas.
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, I wonder what catchy names Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will have? I hope you managed to get a bargain or two over this shopping frenzy recently…there will, I am sure, be future bargains ahead before Christmas and then we have the January sales to look forward to. I found myself looking at things to buy in the stores and on-line that I usually wouldn’t even have thought of buying. I was, thankfully, very restrained and came home on Black Friday with just a pair of shoes, half price….. I nearly bought a sofa though! In the rain and wind of this end of November storm, there is something slightly comforting about getting a bargain. Time for some comfort food now. Maybe Toad in the Hole, or Beef Casserole. We all need comforts that make us feel secure and happy. But we need something more as well. We need a human touch, a friend, a family member, a neighbour. Material goods and comfort food provide some solace, but there is nothing like the smile or words of the loved one. I feel for our world at the moment, there is much sadness and uncertainty. For many at this time there is no hope of having the luxury of even the simplest of comforts. Black Friday for many meant the loss of a loved one through war or famine, Cyber Monday for some may have brought online bullying, threats or hacks. These are the dark signs of the times we live in. But there is a light in that darkness, a light that can never be put out. What’s more it’s a bargain, and it’s free and there is guaranteed delivery…And on December 25th it will arrive.. Thank God.

The star that led the Magi to the newborn king represented years of wondering, centuries of awesome mystery, a beautiful shining in the darkness of those times. As it was then, so the meaning of the star has been for succeeding generations of people seeking truth, wisdom, peace and the presence of the divine – a new generation living with, in and for the light: Jesus, the light from God. But then the clash comes in all its awful reality. King Herod’s secret planning, lies and pretended desire to worship the newborn king are born out of fear, jealousy and darkness. The end of the Gospel is foreshadowed at the beginning, and yet the new generation has come with the light and hope of Christ. Just as was foretold, with the coming of this new king, all nations and all creation will bring their praise, tyrants their fear and the glories of scripture will be recalled in the renewing of reality. The story of the Magi is our story – we know the end of the story even as we read the beginning again. We are members of the same body that will praise the Lord as the one whose power is revealed in love, whose glory was shown in Bethlehem, whose light has come into the world and into our own lives. Let’s live in the commission of God’s grace for our lives and our world today. Creation is joined with all humanity in the praise of God. With every blessing for Christmas and the New Year

‘Mo Team’ raises £2,225 in style by Rebecca Day There were some impressive moustaches grown in Filton last month – so impressive that more than £2,000 has been raised for a men’s health charity. The money was collected by the Filton Barbers Mo Team, headed by shop owner Mario Parrinello, for Movember – a month-long campaign which generates vital funds to treat prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental illness and physical inactivity. It is the sixth year that Mario, who has relatives who have had cancer, has taken part, and he says it is the perfect opportunity to talk about men’s health. There were 13 “Mo Bros” involved in the Filton Barbers Mo Team, which has raised £2,225. Mario, whose zig-zag moustache was inspired by Wario, the villain from Nintendo’s Mario series, said: “Movember went really well, the
team managed to reach our goal so I was really chuffed with that. Everyone grew some awesome mos and different designs. “I would like to see more barbers participate as I think it’s the perfect opportunity to talk to men of all ages about a difficult topic that we generally don't like to talk about.” Mario started recruiting Mo Bros in October. He held a “shave down” event at the start of Movember, with the month culminating in the Big Shave Off. Both events raised over £200, with products and prizes donated by the ShaveDoctor; nibbles and drink by the new My Local store and Antix Bar respectively; and moustache cakes from Filtonbased Out of this World Cakes. Free flu jab for Filton residents
Free flu vaccinations are available for Filton residents who are at increased risk from flu. The vaccinations are available for free to all vulnerable groups including people aged 65 or over, pregnant women, those with long-term conditions and children aged two, three and four years old. People living in long-stay residential homes and children of school years 1 and 2 are also eligible for the vaccination. As well as being available from local GPs, this year free flu jabs for vulnerable groups are also available from community pharmacies through the NHS. The World Health Organisation recommends people in the groups above should be vaccinated to prevent the virus being able to circulate at a harmful level. The seasonal
flu vaccination must be done annually to be effective. Professor Mark Pietroni, Director of Public Health at South Gloucestershire Council, said, “It is really important that as many people as possible in the groups most vulnerable to flu infection book their free flu jab with their GP. “Getting the vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from catching flu and I would urge everyone who is offered the vaccine free on the NHS to get vaccinated. We are encouraging people to do this as soon as possible since the flu virus circulates in winter.” “The flu vaccination has been rigorously tested and clinically proven to be the best defence against the flu virus.” For more information visit www.southglos.gov.uk/flu

Festive recipe
Maniks Turkey Korma
Ingredients • 500g Turkey Breast (diced) • 1 red onion, chopped • 2 pepper, deseeded & chopped • 390g chopped tomatoes • 1 vegetable/chicken stock cube dissolved in 100ml boiling water • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil • 200g low fat natural yoghurt* • 2 tbsp Korma masala curry paste** • handful of fresh coriander • basmati/brown rice to serve • Optional - chickpeas/spinach *I prefer to use low-fat yoghurt as opposed to fat-free yoghurt . Gently heat the quark/fat-free yoghurt when cooking and avoid boiling the mixture, also the addition of a small amount of corn flour will help thicken and bind all the ingredients. **Make sure the first few ingredients of the paste are either vegetables, herbs or water – avoid the pastes where the first/second ingredient listed is oil (unless you want a higher calorie/fat curry!).

Method Step 1 Heat the oil in a pan before adding the onion and cooking for a few minutes until softened Step 2 Add the turkey and peppers and cook until the turkey has turned white/ golden all over and the peppers have softened Step 3 Stir in the Korma paste and cook for 2-3 minutes before adding the chopped tomatoes and stock. Simmer the dish for around 5 minutes before adding a small handful of coriander and the natural yoghurt and sugar or replace with a teaspoon of honey for a healthy option. Step 4 Simmer on a low heat for around 5 minutes before serving with brown/ basmati rice, popadoms & mango chutney (my choice) - sprinkle with coriander before serving

It will be used for our Christmas parties, trips and activities during school holidays over the winter and spring next year! It was a wonderful, busy day with hundreds of visitors enjoying stalls, games and yummy warm sausage rolls and mince pies! 38 children visited Santa’s Grotto and lots of people won fab prizes on the raffle. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the members, staff, trustees, parents and community volunteers who helped on the day to make it so special, as well as to all the local Filton businesses who supported the event by donating prizes, money, and goods.
