Filton should Ruth as she When it comes to acknowledging those who have devoted a large part of their lives helping the community, none could excel the contribution made

by Ruth Perkins. Ruth is the retiring Chair of Filton’s “SHE7” Enterprise, writes Doug Daniels.

Now aged 95 she can look back upon 36 years’ of devoted service providing for those in need of help and understanding.

Few, if any, could have excelled her in that.

Never actively seeking publicity or prominence she was constantly at the forefront where help and comforting was required.

This was particularly evident when I perceived those happily enjoying their mid-day meal in the “SHE7 Cafe” which otherwise

they would have had to forego.

Continuing in the footsteps of the inimitable Dr Sinclair of German origin who not only prescribed medication but sought those requiring it. Ruth followed in a similar way.

Leading her devoted team preparing mid-day meals for those less able to prepare them themselves she ensured that they never went without.

She brought about a haven of dependability that was without equal.

In its diminutive yet cosy location adjacent to a now closed Post Office it acquired the title, “SHE7” from “Self-Help Enterprise” in postal area “7.”

Identified by its array of aerials on its rooftop it is also home to the “North Bristol Radio

Before her involvement with SHE7, Ruth had been a cashier at the nearby Dolphin Swimming Pool and an assistant in a grocery shop in Filton Avenue.

Ruth – who has had three hip operations – started by running bingo at SHE7 and now also runs lunch clubs every week, sorting all the groceries and helping prepare the threecourse meals for up to 40 people at a time.

She told the Bristol Post: "Broken marriages and partnerships all leave people struggling and lonely and that's where our lunch clubs step in.

"We always cook as much as we can and try our best to accommodate anyone who turns up on the day. There are so many people in difficult situations out there and they all need help."

The lunch clubs are funded by the revenue of SHE7 which operates a small charity shop.

When Ruth is not working at the charity she knits gloves, socks and tea cosies – all to raise the extra funds needed to pay for the services.

She also collects for Motor Neurone Disease, Cancer

Research UK, Marie Curie Cancer Care and St Peter's Hospice, often spending the whole day from 10am to 5pm looking for donations.

Ruth's hard work in the community has been rewarded in the past with three honours for services to the public.

One award saw her attend one of the Queen's garden parties.

After three hip operations, Ruth found working for the charity more difficult.

She said: "Each one takes it out of you. I'm finding it very hard but I'll keep going.

"It's the people here that push me on. There must be 300 pairs of feet coming through the doors every week here and I can tell you they really appreciate it."

Yet as I strolled through its delightful garden I appreciated the happiness this venue has encouraged. It matched the gratitude that was being appreciated inside.

Whilst handing over her administration role I feel sure Ruth Perkins will continue along with her equally dedicated

daughter – named Rosemary – to grace the culinary scene.

Filton can be justly proud of such voluntary service afforded by Ruth Perkins and her daughter. They, and others likewise, are a credit to this Town.

Ruth’s role as Chair is now taken by Ray Hulbert, MBE with Peter Edwards, Vice Chair and Ian Anderson, Administrator.

Pilates Exercise of the Month - The Seated Roll Down The Seated Roll Down is a great exercise to help mobilize the spine. Often the spine can become stiff in parts and the Roll Down can help with improving the segmental movement to create a healthy and mobile spine. It also opens and stretches the back muscles which often become inflexible from too much sitting. Another benefit is that it works the abdominals which help us to sit up straight and carry out our daily tasks.

1. Sit up on your sit bones and straighten your legs (if necessary bend your knees to feel you can sit taller and longer) and have your arms out in front of you.

4. When you reach the mat allow the arms to go over your head and feel a stretch throughout the body.

5. To come up, bring your arms up towards the ceiling and then on a long out breath allow the head with the shoulders to come away from the floor, sliding your breastbone down towards your pelvis bending the spine, trying to

come up segmentally. If this is difficult and you cannot get up without straining then rollover onto your side and come up and continue practising the roll down.

Collaboration is Key Separation and divorce is undoubtedly one of the most stressful situations you can face, which is why more couples are being encouraged to take a collaborative approach to managing their affairs.

One benefit is that this process is not driven by a timetable imposed by the court. Sometimes only a couple of meetings are needed, but there is flexibility to allow for more. Once an agreement is reached the lawyers will put it into effect, obtaining a court order where needed.

Lift-off for new aviation museum South Gloucestershire Council has granted formal planning permission for an aerospace museum and learning centre which will also house Concorde near the site where it was manufactured in Filton.

As well as providing an indoor exhibition space for Concorde, World War 1 aircraft hangars will be refurbished for the display of the Bristol Aero Collection along with a full range of visitor facilities.

Lloyd Burnell, Project Director, Bristol Aero Collection Trust, said: “We are delighted to have received planning permission for this very exciting project which will tell the stories of the people and display the products of the region’s world-class aerospace industry, inspiring the next generation of engineers and providing a memorable day out for a wide range of people.”

Councillors originally approved the scheme in March this year, subject to the completion of a legal agreement

as part of the site is currently used as an operations base for the emergency helicopters.

As part of the redevelopment of Filton Airfield, an alternative site for the new helicopter operations base was found in Almondsbury, which was recently approved by DC West Planning Committee.

By Rebecca Day It was supposed to help ease traffic congestion for Filton people, but plans for Bristol’s Henbury Loop train line have been ditched.

It has now been proposed by transport bosses that there will be a ‘spur’ instead, meaning that the line will reach a dead end at Henbury – rather than provide a full round trip between Horfield, Filton, Henbury, Avonmouth, Shirehampton and Clifton as part of the Bristol Metrowest rail system.

The West of England Partnership’s transport board says that they cannot justify the cost of a full loop, and that the ‘spur’, earmarked to open in 2021, would be a much cheaper alternative. They said that they were not ruling out the possibility of a loop in the future.

Filton councillor Roger Hutchinson said the board had no choice but to opt for the spur.

He told Filton Town Council: “It seems clear that not pressing ahead with the spur and failing the ultimate tests for the loop could leave us with no improvements at all. when the spur will at least provide for new stations at Henbury and Filton North.”

With Filton Airfield earmarked for thousands of jobs and new homes, the loop was seen as a way of contrbuting to easing extra traffic congestion in the area.

Spur decision loopy - rail groups Filton will get a new station but the spur decision means that travel to such as Avonmouth and Clifton will mean local people having to travel to those places via Temple Meads Rail campaigners say that with the existing line in place for freight, a full loop would have been the common sense solution.

Northville councillor and town council chairman Darryl Collins said: “I confess to considerable disappointment at the decision not to deliver a much needed Henbury Loop, but instead only a rail spur to stop at Henbury and so prevent rail access from Filton to Avonmouth, Shirehampton and Clifton.

“As a Filtonion wishing to travel to Temple Meads I can catch a train from Abbeywood Station so I am not sure where this spur will benefit me, but as

one of the several thousand ‘new’ residents or workers looking to travel from or to the Airfield development, this rail ‘cul-de-sac’ solution is a poor substitute for the travel options provided by a full rail loop.

“Again this would appear a short-sighted solution and I fear is unlikely to do much to ease the daily ‘log-jammed’ traffic chaos that is Filton.”

And the decision has left some residents feeling concerned about the town’s future.

Resident Pete Holcombe said: “We are losing a chance to get a new town interested in rail as a suitable means of transport.

“Avonmouth is a huge growing area for all industries.

Forward planning and bold thinking is required.

“If we don’t plan and build now for the future, we stand no hope of convincing them to

use rail as a suitable alternative transport. It will take much less work to incorporate a full round robin service then a turn back siding. If you are travelling to Clifton for work you will need to go all the way in to Bristol to change trains and come back out again. With the Henbury line fully open you could go direct and miss out a time costing journey into Bristol.”

Another resident, Sue Whitfield, said: “The line already exists, and having travelled the line, it makes perfect sense to use it.

“Much more convenient to a wider section of the local population travelling to Clifton and Avonmouth.”

Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie has been a vocal backer of the Henbury Loop, and she says that without the crucial railway line, the north of

Bristol will turn into a “dystopian gridlock disaster”.

Last month, Ms Leslie presented a document to transport leaders, stating why their decision to reject the Henbury Loop line is “seriously flawed”.

The document was supported

by Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti, councillors from all parties, community groups, and other concerned bodies.

She said: “[The board] completely disregards the major factor of many existing residents, and new inhabitants of the new development around Filton Airfield will wish to travel to their places of employment in the rapidly expanding enterprise zones of Avonmouth and Severnside, (for which rail would be the obvious choice) without wishing to travel to Temple Meads.”

Come and join ‘Men in Sheds’ The first meeting of Filton ‘Men in Sheds’ will be held at the Scout Hut, Nutfield Grove, Filton on Wednesday September 2 from 10 am till 12 noon and then weekly at the same time and venue.

‘Men in Sheds’ is like a larger version of a typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where you can feel at home and pursue your own practical interests.

‘Men in Sheds’ offers this to a group of such men where members share skills, tools and

resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly venue with tea, coffee biscuits on tap.

Activities usually involve working in wood but may include activities as varied as bike repair to model engineering. There are now more than 60 Sheds in the UK and all men are welcome.

Police appeal after theft from Asda Police are seeking two men, pictured, in connection with a theft/burglary from the Asda in Filton.

On Monday, June 15 at 5.40pm, two men entered the store at the Abbeywood Retail Park. One man approached the till and took cash from it, while the other man distracted staff.

These men are suspected of committing a number of thefts/ burglaries from Asda stores across the South West.

One man is described as

white, in his 30s, of slim build, clean shaven, with receding brown hair and glasses. He wore a blue polo shirt, dark trousers and dark trainers.

The second man is described as white, in his 30s, of chubby build and clean shaven. He wore a flat cap, blue t-shirt, light trousers, blue hooded top and dark shoes.

News Filton group named as charity of the year by supermarket giant Local charity FACE Filton has been named Local Charity of the Year by Sainsbury’s East Filton.

FACE Filton (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) was chosen by customers through in-store and online votes in June and will receive a year’s worth of support through fundraising and awareness from the store.

Representatives from the charity have been joiing Sainsbury’s colleagues over a weekend to fundraise by having a treadmill in store to raise awareness for a charity walk to Madrid to be completed by a volunteer at FACE. Debbie Teml of FACE said: “The Local Charity of the Year scheme has been successful for so many charities, and we can’t wait to get started.

“We’re hoping the partnership will help raise awareness of our cause to the store’s customers and will help us develop the important service we provide to the community.”

Steve Jones, store manager at Sainsbury’s East Filton, added: “We’re really looking forward to launching our partnership with FACE Filton.

“We had a fantastic response from our customers this year during the voting period.”

Store opens with support for school A food store at Cheswick Village was officially opened by children from Wallscourt Farm Academy, Noodle the school dog and their Principal, Susie Weaver.

Sixteen jobs have been created for local people at the new store in Longdown Avenue, Cheswic, which is open seven days a week from 7am - 11pm.

In addition to produce, ready meals and an instore bakery, the store includes a Paypoint, Lottery and free to use ATM plus a Post Office counter service which will be open throughout the store’s opening hours.

This will offer general postage and parcel services, mail redirection and bank services.

The store opening is the latest for the independent regional retailer, The Southern Co-operative.

Wallscourt Farm Academy joined store manager Simon Daly to cut the ribbon and officially open the store.

The Southern Co-operative donated £500 towards the Academy’s Community Cultivation Alliance to celebrate the store’s opening.

Charities told they need to get ‘grant in kind’ for free hall hire

Filton Town Council has ruled local charities cannot rent their halls for free - but a ‘grant’ scheme should mean charges will be minimal or even eliminated.

Filton Chest and Heart, a local charity which provides medical equipment for local GPs and other organisations, spends more than £200 a year renting the pavilion for fundraising events.

Chairman Brian Smith told the town council they were providing a unique and invaluable service and that the council should offer the hall hire with no charge.

But the council - which has overseen a budget crisis in the

past 12 months - said it could not simply offer hall hire for free.

Instead, they said, £700 has been ‘set aside’ and groups can apply to have their fees effectively reduced or written off.

In a heated discussion at full council, Mr Smith said grants in kind would not work as the charity would be unable to make firm plans.

Council chairman Darryl Collins said the council was criticised for failing to raise enough revenue and was now being criticised for failing to offer facilities for free. Mr Collins said the council could not have one charity having an exemption and

In a letter to Filtonvoice, Councillor Bill Moore, who was not present at the meeting, said he backed Mr Smith’s position Whilst I understand the difficulties that Filton town council are experiencing, I am perplexed that legitimate charities should be asked to pay for room hire, whether this be directly or by what has been turned into grants for which they must apply.

This is a particular issue for Filton Chest and Heart charity who continue to work tirelessly on behalf of Filton residents with their fantastic fundraising efforts. The Chairman Mr Brian Smith has asked me as a Northville resident to raise this issue for him.

A consultant and patron of the charity who works at Southmead Hospital is also dumbfounded by Filton Chest and Heart being asked to pay for room hire. I think we, Filton Town Council, should support such charities in any small way that we can by allowing free use of the pavilion. It seems very harsh that someone buying on good faith at one of their fundraising events, a cake let's say, should then find that this money donated for purchase of medical equipment may find the money being used for room hire.

Therefore I would hope that Filton Town Council reverse this decision of room hire for charities and take the moral high ground and allow free room use for their meetings to arrange fundraising events and discuss purchase of medical equipment for the local surgeries and Southmead Hospital.

offered, his group would not be told to change dates even if a paying customer tried to book the hall.

Organist Byron pulls out all the stops for eye hospital

By Rebecca Day Internationally renowned organist and Filton resident Byron Jones raised over £1,200 for the Bristol Eye Hospital at his recent annual concert.

More commonly known as the ‘Welsh Wizard’, Byron delighted crowds on his impressive 1927 Compton Theatre Organ, which he has played at Eden Grove Church Hall for the past 14 years.

The highly-attended Wizard Compton Theatre Organ concert was held on May 23.

Byron and his partner Terry own the organ – which originates from the Rialto Theatre in London – as well as a Wurlitzer pipe organ at their home in Filton.

Byron, 66, who has been playing the organ for 50 years, said: “It was a very special night as we decided to raise money for the Bristol Eye Hospital.

“Having spent a week on and off the phone to local restaurants and stores, we managed to get over 20 prizes for the charity raffle. We were thrilled to think everyone really supported the charity so well, and would like to thank everyone for the money that was taken, and to all the local businesses as well.

“A few people on the night said that they had been to the eye hospital for treatment and surgery and they were only pleased to support it.

“We were also very honoured to have in our company Sir Jay Tidmarsh and his wife.”

Concerts are held at the Eden Grove Church Hall every month, with different musicians performing on the organ.

Byron added: “We have a wonderful group of people who support our events. It’s like a big family and they create a great atmosphere.”

Local school children had the chance to get their hands dirty last month, as they helped plant a brilliant range of flowers at the Filton Community Garden.

Year 6 pupils from Shield Road and Charborough Road were awarded £50 each from garden committee member and town councillor Bill Moore, allowing the pupils to rejuvenate their flower beds, which they planted last year.

Lidia Spoto, teacher at Shield Road, said: “Planting these flowers gives the pupils a sense of community.

“They’ve been able to work together as a team, and they’re very proud of their creations.

“It allows the kids to give something back to Filton.”

After the Charborough Road Primary children visited, they enjoyed a picnic lunch in the garden.

Dave Mikkelson, chair of the community garden, said: “This is a great way to get children out of the classroom and enjoying nature.”

The garden – which has been described by the Royal Horticulture Society as the ‘best example of a community garden they had seen’ – has also been enjoying the recent addition of a wildflower meadow.

Dave added: “We have been working hard and have improved the garden a lot this last year, and it’s good to see it being made use of by local people, as well as lots of wildlife.”

News at community garden fete The weather was against us but it did not dampened the spirits of those involved in the inaugural Filton Community Garden Fete.

Ably assisted by FACE and the GKR Karate Club we were up early in the pouring rain erecting tents and preparing for the Fete, knowing that the weather could only get better and so it did.

Glimpses of sun came out in the afternoon and gradually people arrived to enjoy the entertainment and free activities for the children. The now legendary Punch And Judy show entertained children and adults alike, and the Karate Club gave a fantastic display. Children were

painting, exploring, bug hunting, throwing buckets in balls and knocking over tins, good fun for all of the family.

There were more entries this year for the garden on a plate competition and the standard was exceptional.

It was good to see people looking at the garden guided by members of the Garden Committee. We hope that everyone who came enjoyed themselves and I thank them all for their support. We can only hope that next year the weather will be kinder to us.

Union donates lifesaving kit to community

A tragic event several years ago has inspired union members to donate lifesaving equipment to Filton Library for community use.

Filton Aerospace and Support Staff Branch of Unite the Union has more than 2,000 members working in companies around the Filton Airbus site and they have recently purchased a defibrillator for the benefit of local people which will be located in the library.

UNITE spokesman David Evans said: “Some years ago, my next door neighbour’s daughter collapsed and died in a playpark from a heart condition so I am painfully aware of the need for access to defibrillators in the community in addition to those

in hospitals. We have a monthly meeting where we consider financial requests for assistance.

“We consider whether our donation would benefit the union members and/or the local community. We also consider requests for donations to charities who Union members and/or their families have received support from, or are fundraising for.

“We considered as a branch where we might place one in our community and it was unanimously agreed to purchase a defibrillator to be sited at the library.”

A library spokesperson said staff would like to pass on their thanks and added: “We are really pleased to have this defibrillator

at the library and would like to let the community know they can access it here in an emergency. It could save someone’s life.”

Council serving up pricey tennis fees As a local resident I would just like to congratulate the local council on their fantastic sports facilities. For the incredibly low price of £8.25 you can book the tennis court for an hour.

Not only that but you get a free football goal at each end of the court and lots of moss on court thrown in for free. Its that good they don’t even give a discount for local residents, unlike their other sports facilities.

Runway plans will make things worse Although I have lived in Filton for most of the period since 1958 I am not a great fan of the place.

Plans for more houses on the runway site will only exacerbate an already horrendous traffic situation in rush hours morning and afternoons. What is there to like about Filton?

The introduction of a permit parking system in Kenmore Cres/Drive exemplifies the ‘community commitment’ of the residents! Don’t they have drives?

The problem, if indeed it is a problem, is moved to the adjacent area. If parking is carried out lawfully on the road outside my house, what is there to complain about? I don’t own the road!

Finally, in your article you state ‘Filton was part of Bristol until 1996...’

In fact Filton was a part of Gloucestershire County Council until Avon County Council was formed, when it was in Northavon District Council!

Latterly Filton was and still is in the unitary council of South Glos. I’m unable to give the years of the numerous transitions,but quite frankly I couldn’t care less!

Poppy branch says thanks to Terry The local branch of the RBL which covers Filton has marked the retirement of the outgoing joint Poppy Appeal Organiser, Terry Webber.

Terry has served as a PAO for 12 years and this year helped to raise the Poppy Appeal total to a record £47,799, and the 2014/15 Poppy Appeal year has still got to run until September 30.

He was given the award

A towering addition ... but somewhat misplaced

Regular contributor Doug Daniels casts his eye over the new development on the site of the former Filton Police Station

There has been a greater tendency in recent times to concentrate more on a building’s function rather than appearance.

Admittedly a building has to cater for a specific requirement rather than over-indulgence on appearances. Yet occasionally things can go wrong.

It is with that in mind that several are expressing adverse criticism about the recent replacement of the Police Station at Filton along Gloucester Road North.

Whilst they generally accept the row of houses along this stretch of road, they reject totally the inclusion of the tower-like structure at the end of it. It is completely out of character with the remaining properties around it.

I feel it is essential to match new buildings to suit the neighbourhood. Either new additions or properties already in existence. This new building does neither.

Additionally the new housing leading directly into the road leading into Elm Park is too close to the road itself.

You gain the appearance that every inch of available space has been utilised for the housing scheme.

The whole appearance of this new development appears to have swamped the location

adjacent to St Andrew’s Church – almost obscuring it.

I cast no reflection on the building’s quality but the structure’s appearance can in no way be regarded as an architectural achievement. It has debilitated the area where Filton Police Station proudly stood before.

I feel that much more could have been done to enhance this stretch of Filton on the Gloucester Road. No matter how they look. “Let’s build them and fill them” is the current trend.

Councils – both District and local – might bear reference to this. Attention to the appearance of any new structure should become an essential requirement.

It could make a difference to where we live.

Filton’s future In the June issue of “Filton Voice” the possibility of Filton drifting away from its South Gloucestershire heritage into the eager arms of an ambitious Bristol was vividly exposed.

There has always been that suspicion that Bristol cherished the idea of encompassing Filton since its unique aerospace background with “Airbus” in its midst would become the “jewel in the crown” amongst the City’s future ambitions.

A BBC “Phone In” programme gave me the opportunity to question South Gloucestershire Council’s current leader ...

Matthew Riddle ... regarding this premonition. It was revealed that regardless of boundary extensions the current close collaboration between the two administrations – ie: Bristol and South Gloucestershire – already exists. A take-over by an expanding “Greater Bristol” would be “sacrosanct” ... according to Matthew ... it will never happen.

With a Shoppers’ Car Park central to Filton ... close to the junction with Northville Road

- jointly owned by Bristol and South Gloucestershire – the City is already only a “handshake” away.

Matthew told me attentively that his “quest to Filton residents assured him that a drift into Bristol would be universally unacceptable”.

It’s a small world and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Filton became part of “Greater Bristol” in the years ahead.

With Filton’s Council Tax at peak in South Gloucestershire I doubt whether its comparison with that of Bristol would be a decisive issue.

Would they, I wonder, accept the “suffocation” of the area by 6,000 houses on a unique and extensive runway on the now closed airfield ... deeply regretted at Filton?

One thing would be certain ... it would become a lucrative gain for Bristol if it ever came about.

Bristol has long sought the prospect of acquiring Filton’s aerospace industry along with the lucrative Mall, predicted to increase in size.

The prospect of enlarging the Mall’s bus station to include national travel – ie National Express – was mentioned in the radio programme. Whether South Gloucestershire or Bristol, that seems a positive idea worthy of serious thought.

It sometimes seems that each new production of a Shakespeare play demands some singularity, if only to distinguish it from all the others.

With the RSC’s current, modern-dress version of ‘Othello’, directed by Iqbal Khan, it is that our eponymous hero (played by Hugh Quarshie) and his nemesis, Iago (a superb Lucian Msamati), are the same race, yet this shift in perspective is no gimmick.

At a stroke, the racism inherent in the plot becomes more subtle, and complex reasons for Iago’s villainy suggest themselves.

South Glos Council has officially launched the new digital mapping project ‘Know Your Place – West of England’.

Know Your Place is an ambitious online mapping project that overlays maps from various periods of history, allowing users to compare how streets or areas in places like Filton look today with maps from yesteryear.

The council is leading a partnership of local authorities and voluntary organisations in the West of England area which has been awarded £379,800 in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the project, with £24,270 matchfunding and support from councils and other partners.

Working with the British Library, the result will be a public website which will hold all of the historic digital maps of the local authority areas including South Glos, Gloucestershire and Bristol. The Know Your Place website can be viewed at: maps.bristol.gov.uk/kyp/

Pupils from Orchard School donned gowns and mortarboards for their very own ceremony at Bristol Cathedral on July 10 thanks to an affiliate scheme with UWE. Orchard teamed up with the university to provide the Children’s University programme, which encourages pupils, from Years 7 to 10, to take part in and facilitate learning

activities outside of school hours.

The project allows children to take up fantastic opportunities to not only discover themselves, but the world around them.

Students collected stamps for each activity they took part in, which were displayed in their own passport - which looks similar to an EU passport.

Twenty pupils, in Years 7 to 9, graduated through the scheme, with 14 Year 10s graduating as volunteers.

Filton Park Pre-School Playgroup celebrated their 50th anniversary at their annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic. The cake was cut by the oldest ex pupil present - Mark Packham - and the youngest current playgroup child - Delilah-Rose Abraham.

Pupils at Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy (BTEA) visited the world famous CERN complex in Switzerland as part of their A-Level physics studies.

The Year 12 and Year 13 students were guests of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, which houses the world’s largest particle physics laboratory and the Large Hadron Collider, as well as visiting the United Nations offices in nearby Geneva.

“Visitors are not able to view the collider itself but we were able to see fascinating areas such as the cryogenic cooling facility and the accelerator complex,” said Ellie Wilson, a physics teacher and Head of Key Stage 4 at BTEA. “It was hugely beneficial for the students to meet some of the physicists who work at CERN, including Dr. Vincent Smith MBE who is based at the University of Bristol, and the

trip will provide a real source of inspiration for our young people as they continue with their studies and think about future career paths.”

Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy in Stoke Gifford near Filton is one of 30 University Technical Colleges across England, catering for pupils in Years 10 to 13 and with a strong focus on engineering and environmental technologies.

BTEA is sponsored by the University of the West of England and GKN Aerospace and also receives support from Airbus, Rolls-Royce and the Royal Navy.

Tears and farewells as Year 13 have a final day to remember Abbeywood Community School

On June 26, Year 13 had their leavers’ assembly; the year 12 students were also present. It was a time for tears, laughter, friends and farewells.

The leavers’ assembly was amazing. It was very emotional seeing the tutors saying their farewells and creating personal messages to each Year 13 in their tutor. There were gifts given to all which was a great way to say goodbye.

After the emotional assembly it was time to have a little bit of fun. There was a bouncy castle and crepes for everyone. The queue of everyone trying to get a crepe at the same time was so long at first that it nearly touched the school from the bike sheds!

All of Year 12 and Year 13 stood together, talking and laughing. This is what Post 16 at Abbeywood Community School is all about. No segregation and no individual friendship groups; just everyone getting along for one last time together.

The madness of the bouncy castle began with Year 12 boys, followed by everyone else jumping and having a great time.

Who said students in Post 16 were too old for a bouncy castle?

I personally cannot wait for our Year 13 leavers next year, as it is a great way to end the year and say a proper emotional goodbye before prom; the last time you will see a lot of these long-term friends before they embark on their journey to university and beyond.

Abbeywood Community School scoops top award for safety Abbeywood Community School has been recognised by The National Safety Certification Scheme for Schools, known as SafetyMARK, as having ‘excellent’ safety standards.
