Filton street lights back on all night Street lighting is set to return to Filton all night after seven years of partial switch-offs on many streets. Since 2013, most residential streets have seen lights turned off between midnight-4am (summer) and 1am-5am (winter). This was instigated by South Glos Council to preserve energy but at the time there were concerns for the safety of those returning home late and also fears that it could see an upswing in crime. Filton has roughly 1,000 lights with around 600 are on part night lighting. In certain streets, for example near sheltered housing and on main roads, the lights have stayed on. The council said it remained committed to LED lighting, which is more efficient, but latest technology means it is better to leave them on but have them dim slightly. A spokesperson for South

Gloucestershire Council said: “We started a scheme to install energy efficient LED lighting units to all of our 29,500 streetlights in 2014 and we aim to finish in 2024. Doing this will drastically reduce our carbon emissions and bring down our energy consumption. “We will start work to convert the lights in Filton this April (2020), with the new units using around 60% less energy than the old ones. The lights have also been pre-programmed so they are dimmed during the quiet hours of the night, maintaining light but operating as efficiently as possible. “We have committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 to help tackle climate change and recently announced an £8 million investment in our 2020 budget to help reduce our carbon footprint. Replacing our streetlights with efficient LED lights is one of the measures we

are taking which will help us to achieve that goal.” At the time of the original partial switch-off, one resident told Filtonvoice: “It really is pitch black. My neighbours are in bed when I get home so you don’t even get a shard of light from their lit up rooms.” Another said: “It get’s very

dark now we have no street lighting. When I come in from a work callout in the early hours of the morning, it’s like playing pin the tail on the donkey trying to get the key in the front door. It isn’t going be fun when the bad weather comes, or someone falls over the recycling bins in the pitch black.”

n STREET LIGHTS South Glos street lights Q&A Like many local authorities we are introducing LED (light emitting diode) street light technology to help reduce our energy costs and cut carbon emissions. We began installing LED lights in January 2014 and shall finish in 2024. We will gradually replace all of our street lights with LED units during this 10-year programme. In 2014/15 we completed most of our main roads, most notably the A4174 Avon Ring Road. Filton work is scheduled for April. LEDs have many benefits: they consume 60% less energy than older units, last four times as long as older units and are cheaper and easier to maintain. They are also easier to control, allowing us to dim output at selected times for maximum energy efficiency LEDs reduce light pollution; their beam is focused more effectively on roads and footpaths; not private land How much will this cost and how much will it save?

This is an ‘Invest to Save’ project which is designed to pay for itself over time and deliver ongoing savings for the council. The total cost of replacing all units with LEDs is approximately £14million. The council is now saving approximately £1million a year through the LED replacement programme. On average, the lights will pay for themselves within approximately eight years of installation. LED units last much longer than sodium lights and therefore require less maintenance. How will this help South Gloucestershire’s carbon emissions? LED lights use 60% less energy and when fully implemented will reduce our total street lightingrelated carbon emissions by about 60% – equal to around 4,800 tonnes per year. New lights have been installed in my street and now there are dark patches?

The focusing technology of LEDs ensures more light is usefully directed at the ground, reducing the amount that ‘spills’ out to the sides. This can make it appear darker outside lit areas. What are the big differences between LED lights and my current lights? LEDs are dimmer – we are aware that areas will be dimmer; however, on balance, the council considers the lighting level to be appropriate. LED lights use 60% less energy; when fully implemented will reduce our total street lightingrelated carbon emissions by about 60% – equal to around 4,800 tonnes per year. LED units also last four times as long. This results in lower maintenance costs. LED lights can be controlled; this means we will be able to dim lights down in quieter times, to help save more money.

Will you be replacing the lighting columns to do this? Not routinely, we will be reusing all columns unless they need to be replaced as part of our routine maintenance programme. Some sites may require additional units however to cover excessive column spacing. Will you be dimming the LEDs when they are installed? Yes. We plan to dim all of our street lights by between 25% and 50%. Will you be getting rid of partnight lighting now that we have LEDs? Previously installed LED lanterns will remain ‘part night’ and will only be considered for change after the current LED programme is completed in 2025. New housing developments and schemes that have been approved under a previous policy will be considered for change only after the development has been adopted.

Let's all move for mental health in May

Swimmers and runners will take part in Move for Mental Health in May this year to raise money for Network Counselling and Training, which offers affordable counselling to all from their base in Elm Park, Filton. By taking on their own challenges the team hopes to raise £3,000 for Network Counselling and Training. Filton Dolphin Pool is hosting our swimmers on Thursday 21st May, and others are joining the Bristol 10k. Andy says: “I only took up running 18 months ago as a way of keeping fit but more importantly reducing my stress and anxiety levels. I now enjoy running and use this time to switch off from everyday life which helps my mental wellbeing.” Network Counselling and Training offers affordable counselling to all, regardless of background or ability to pay. Clients come with issues ranging from severe childhood trauma to deeply painful bereavements as adults. They regularly tell us that their counselling is life changing. One client said: “Life hasn’t gotten any easier but I’m better equipped to handle it now. I’ve learnt how to ride the surf instead of being constantly knocked over and I’m much more peaceful now as a result.” Rita Smith, General Manager at Network, pictured below, says: “Activity, physical health, mental health and wellbeing are all linked, so we are so excited to welcome supporters to our Move for Mental Health challenge. Filton to benefit from £10m infrastructure spend More than £10million in new funding is set to be invested over the coming year on local transport infrastructure and community open spaces across South Gloucestershire, including work in Filton. The funding, which comes as part of the Council’s record £160million investment into roads and transport infrastructure, will be used for maintenance on local roads as well as installing brand new transport schemes and improving local public open spaces. The £7.24million transport maintenance scheme, includes more than £6million into the upkeep of local carriageways, cycleways and footways, as well as a further £1million into a range of highway structure projects and £200,000 into highway drainage maintenance schemes. Among the areas that will benefit from resurfacing works

over the next year area are Filton, where more than £530,000 will be spent resurfacing roads and paths, including Shields Avenue, Third Avenue, Mackie Avenue, Elm Park and both Eighth and Ninth Avenue. Staple Hill and Mangotsfield are set to receive more than £210,000, which will see resurfacing works on roads including Elmsleigh Road, Salisbury Road and Balmoral Court. Almost £110,000 will be invested in Downend, resurfacing the High Street and reconstructing the footway on Westerleigh Road. More than £110,000 will be spent in Charlton Hayes and Patchway to resurface roads including Highwood Road, Epney Close and Elmore Road. Holmewood Close in Winterbourne is set to be resurfaced, with more than

£46,000 being allocated. On top of the resurfacing and repair works, a number of other schemes have been given the green light, with investment valued at just over £2.3million. These initiatives include Filton ince again, where the installation of pedestrian islands on Filton Avenue between Nutfied Grove and Stanley Avenue and on Southmead Road will take place. In Winterbourne the installation of a cycle access ramp near Winterstream roundabout and a waiting restriction review and installation on Moorend Road, Worrells Lane and Pye Corner area will be developed. In Cribbs Causeway the installation of a yellow box on junction of Lysander Road and Catbrain Lane as well as the construction of a pedestrian footway link on Lysander Road will take place. Across Frenchay and

Hambrook the installation of acoustic fencing at Fenbrook Close will shield from noise pollution from the ring road. On top of the infrastructure funding, almost £800,000 has been approved from developer contributions across South Gloucestershire. This will go towards improving and maintaining public open spaces and sports facilities. Welcoming the proposals, Cllr Steve Reade, Cabinet Member for Planning, Transport and Strategic Environment, said: “I am delighted we are able to invest this funding into maintaining and improving our transport network into supporting our local communities. “A great deal of focus has gone into ensuring this investment capitalises on our environmental commitments. How new locks can unlock a new you A HAIR salon in Kingswood is leading the fight against female hair loss, transforming the lives of clients. Charisma, on the Kingsway, set up a hair loss clinic 12 months ago. Following the fitting of their integrated hair mesh systems, clients are leaving with a newfound confidence, delighted with their dramatic make-over. The hair loss clinic is based on the first floor of the salon allowing customers who may feel embarrassed or upset by their hair loss complete privacy. The intricate work is carried out by Emily Gil, who originally honed her skills at Charisma as a Saturday girl under the leadership of salon owner Becky Rendell. After qualifying as a stylist, Emily wanted to explore aspects of the business so went to work for a national hair loss clinic. She missed the staff and after several years decided she wanted to return to Charisma. Emily said: “I just wanted to come back as I loved the salon and loved working with Becky but I wanted to continue to work with clients with hair loss. I just wanted to make it more affordable for people. “Becky and I met up a few times and we started planning the clinic. It took about a year and a half to plan but now we’re up and running and it’s going really well.” Emily, 27, has seen clients of all ages with very different conditions causing hair loss or thinning. Her eldest client was in her late eighties but her youngest client was just nine years old. She had hair loss due to treatment for leukaemia. “It was very emotional,” says Emily, who lives in St George. “I had a lady who came in before having chemotherapy and I was with her through her whole treatment journey. I’ve seen alopecia, female pattern baldness and trichotillomania, which is where someone pulls their own hair out. “There are a lot of women suffering and I can understand they might feel embarrassed but we are

Emily Gil here to offer support. People are putting their trust in me so I make sure I listen to what they want and take care of them. I want to help every client who walks through my door.” Potential clients are given a one-to-one consultation where Emily talks them through her integrated mesh system which is attached to your scalp, with bonds made with your own hair in order to individually attach 100 per cent human hair extensions. “We have a chat and find out about their condition which is causing the hair loss and how long they’ve had it for. I do tests on the hair and see if it’s growing back. We also discuss what they would like to achieve in terms of thickness and length. I encourage clients to bring in photos of the sort of hair and style they would like to achieve. “If they are happy to proceed we match up hair colours and make a first appointment.” The system means clients can have their hair any thickness, length or colour they desire, with the added bonus that their scalp can breathe under the mesh, enabling their own hair to grow back, should their condition allow it to. Clients can treat the hair as their own and can wash, blow-dry,

straighten and curl it. Emily said: “It’s life-changing. You can tell that because you see how much confidence a person gains after having the system. They can be very timid and worried when they first come in but by the end of it you can see them glowing with confidence. We recently had a lady who came in with general thinning. She was very shy and apprehensive about what was going to happen but by the end, she was crying with joy - she just loved how she looked. She called me that evening and told me I had literally changed her life.” One of her clients is Kingswood resident, 55-year-old Debbie Bush. She had been going to Charisma for years for cuts but, with ever thinning locks, was intrigued by the salon’s integrated mesh system. “I have really thin hair which runs in my family. I’ve done loads of things to it - I’ve dyed it, bleached it and have gone through stress and the menopause so it all took its toll on my hair. I’ve always wanted long, thick hair but have never been able to grow it past a certain length. “I was nervous but excited and I couldn’t believe the result - it looked so natural! It’s given me a lot more confidence. I now bother with myself more and wear make up because I’ve got nice hair to

show off. “I wasn’t embarrassed by my thin hair but it was hard work. I had to wash and blow-dry it every morning just for it to look ok, but now it’s just once a week. “It was a considered purchase but I would say it’s well worth it as it makes me feel so good.” Clients need to return every six to eight weeks to have the system tightened as it becomes slightly looser once their own hair starts growing underneath. Once every six months the system is completely taken off, their hair and scalp washed and any repairs are carried out before the hair is connected back to the mesh. The system should last between two and two and a half years, depending on how it is looked after. Emily said she loves her work and is delighted to be back. “I always wanted to end up back at Charisma but I didn’t know what I wanted to specialise in. It was only when I got into hair loss solutions that I knew what I wanted to do. “You build friendships and personal relationships with clients as you go on a journey with them. “The best feeling in the world is watching their emotion at the end. It’s priceless and it’s what makes my job worthwhile.”

A life loved in Filton... Mum moved to Filton in the 1980s and took on a governor role at Shield Road school a few years later, eventually becoming Chair of the governors. Through this role she championed the inclusion of baking in the school curriculum. You always knew when she was in the kitchen with a class making her famous traffic light biscuits with a class as a stream of excitable children covered in jam would be giggling in the corridor. She helped to run the St Peter’s guide unit for many years, adopting the role of camp chef on guide camp where she would be very protective of ‘her’ campfire and be up at the crack of dawn to get the fire going. In her retirement Mum remained an active part of the community, volunteering at the Church Cafe and spending some time there as the manager. She

loved how much a part of the community the Cafe was and enjoyed spending time there with customers and volunteers. She was also a member of the Brabazon Belles and sat on the PCC for the church. Mum was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2018, a cancer for which her strength, courage and determination throughout her illness was truly inspiring. She really wanted to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK and suggested that we take part in a 4 generations triathlon which we completed last October, raising almost £3,000 for the charity that had supported her. She was so proud of this achievement. She was a proud member of the Filton community and will be missed. Amy Atkinson.

YTL Arena gets the go ahead Plans to repurpose the Brabazon hangars into an arena for Bristol and the South West have taken another step forward today as South Gloucestershire Council voted unanimously in favour of granting planning permission for a temporary car park and associated access to the site. On 4 March Bristol City Council granted YTL permission to create an arena for Bristol in the iconic hangars, the birthplace of Concorde, which are within the city boundaries. However, the plans also include a temporary 1,800 space car park, access for delivery vehicles from the north, across the former airfield and via West Way, and a new pedestrian bridge over the existing railway track, which will serve as the main entrance to the arena. These components fall

What will YTL arena complex comprise?

The Brabazon Hangars offer three individual but interlinked areas: • Central Hangar – YTL Arena: 17,080 capacity, the third largest in the UK. Multi-purpose, flexible and unique arena auditorium. Providing the ability to host theatre format shows for 4,000, super theatre for 8,000 and full capacity gigs at 17,080. The new and unique UK arena configuration, allows Bristol to host full capacity live music shows, but also to offer sporting events, family entertainment (eg Dancing on Ice, Strictly Come Dancing) and comedy shows. As the third largest UK arena, it will attract major events and shows previously unable to include Bristol in their touring programme. • East Hangar - Festival Hall: a flat floor space for trade shows, exhibitions, conventions and other events. The Festival Hall will also be able to compliment the Arena shows – as a break-out area or extension to the show, for example if there is a sports tournament in the main arena, the Festival Hall could act as the warm up area. • West Hangar - The Hub: a place to eat, work and play. This will be the heartbeat of the complex, a 365-day a year venue creating quality, full and part-time contracted jobs and opportunities for career progression. The Arena will attract in excess of 1.4 million visitors a year, bringing increased spend into the city region. Evidence demonstrates that Liverpool Echo Arena campus has boosted the local economy by £1.8billion since it opened ten years ago, while Glasgow Event Campus injected £450million in 2018 alone. Developers forecast YTL Arena will create an additional £1.5billion spend in tourism alone, in the local economy over the next 25 years, and offer new opportunities and benefits to the city and wider region. • Increase in overnight stays at £33million annually • Additional spend in city bars and restaurants at £27m annually • Source more than 75% of products and services locally • The marketing will include working with city partners to promote overnight stays and tourism. Data shows 50% of tickets sales for Bristol concerts in 2019 were from outside the city • They will create 580 jobs with a living wage policy. Holly took action after seeing so much rubbish by Shane Gibson Talk to any true Filtonian and they will share with you a love for their home and their neighbourhood. You can find many who will work towards keeping their piece of Filton a place to be proud of. One such person is Holly Green of Conygre Grove. This year Holly has taken part in South Gloucestershire’s Spring Clean. I asked her what inspired her to get involved. “I'd posted on the Filton news and Views page on Facebook about how frustrated I was with having to clean up others rubbish, that has made its way into our hedge and garden, on an almost twice daily basis.” said Holly. “Others said they felt the same. I suggested it may be time to do a street clean to at least make it look a friendlier and nicer place to live.” When someone suggested The Spring Clean, Holly visited the SGC website. “I saw that they held the

voluntary event between 24th Feb and 10th March every year, where they provide litter pickers, rubbish and recycling sacks as well as gloves. “It was nice and easy, I filled in the form online with some dates the council delivered the equipment and once the cleans were completed they collected the full sacks.” I asked Holly what she wanted to achieve with the Spring Clean. She said: “I wanted to get involved more with my community since I realise we only know a few neighbours directly around us. I'd hoped others would see a resident trying to make our street a cleaner safer place and that they would maybe join me. I've completed two cleans to date, both times another resident helped, and we collected a total of 17 bags of rubbish and recycling along one side of the street, from end to end. " Holly’s efforts have made a considerable difference in her part of Filton.

A whole new way of deaing with our rubbish A plan outlining how South Gloucestershire Council deals with rubbish over the next decade has been approved amid criticism it does not prioritise the dearth of public recycling bins. It includes a new facility to be built in Filton for recycling. The waste strategy includes ambitious recycling targets and new reuse shops as part of the authority’s steps to tackle the climate emergency, as well as a litter bin review. Opposition Labour Cllr Kim Scudamore told a council cabinet meeting the aspirations were “fantastic” but added: “I am disappointed we still do not seem to be committing to having recycling bins provided in our public open spaces. “We are very keen for residents to separate their recycling, but at the moment in our parks and town centres by and large that doesn’t happen. There’s just one bin.”

He said one of the aims in the 44-page document – to increase the amount of fines issued to people dropping rubbish on the street or dumping household waste in public bins – was “great if you have resources to collect them”. Conservative council leader Toby Savage said: “As part of the administration’s budget there was significant investment into being able to staff our enviro-crime team to expand its work because in terms of the levels of fines to date it’s not enough. “That is why the administration took the decision to fund the expansion of the team’s work to replicate the success taken on flytipping and make sure it’s reflected across a wider range of littering offences.” The meeting heard a litter bin review would start this year beginning with Kingswood followed by Staple Hill and that

a business case was being put together to get recycling bins onto high streets as a first step. Cllr Savage said: “We have a very ambitious strategy that is integral to our wider response to the climate emergency with ambitious targets to increase our recycling to 70 per cent and zero landfill by 2030. “We have seen an increase in recycling rates every year since 2015 and we are tantalising close to the 60 per cent mark at the moment.” Cabinet member for corporate resources Cllr Ben Burton said: “The plan provides an excellent framework to build on the success of previous strategies.” He said 57.8 per cent of rubbish was recycled in 2018/19, making South Gloucestershire the seventh best performing unitary authority in England, and that black-bin kerbside waste had reduced by 27 per cent per household over the

last five years. The strategy says the aim by 2030 is to cut this by a further eight per cent. It says reuse shops will open at the authority’s tips in Yate and Mangotsfield, a new site in Filton and at a high street to serve the Hanham, Kingswood and Staple Hill areas. An estimated 10,000 tonnes of food waste that could be recycled is thrown away in black wheelie bins each year. The document says food recycling will be available in 50 per cent of flats by 2021 and by all of them by 2023. It says: “We have over 1,000 litter bins, many of which have been in the same locations for years. “We intend to review the location of our existing litter bins to ensure they are in the most effective places. “We will also review the types

n UPDATE FROM WEST OF ENGLAND MAYOR TIM BOWLES

Rail investment will really make a difference

Being situated just a stone’s throw away from the station, I regularly see Intercity Express Trains going in and out of Temple Meads from the from the Combined Authority offices. It was only two and a half years ago that these services were first introduced and yet they have so quickly become an everyday sight and symbol of our region. And, with the new timetables introduced last December, an even quicker link into London and other cities. I look forward to a time when my MetroWest suburban rail plans are fully implemented and residents won’t be able to remember a time before Portishead was connected by rail to Bristol or before communities such as Henbury or North Filton had stations. The West of England Combined Authority has been investing heavily to progress

these plans, and they are well under way. A year ago, it wasn’t even certain that we would win the Government’s commitment and funding to re-open the railway to Portishead and Pill. And yet now, thanks to the Combined Authority and working closely with our partner councils, we know that this project will be going ahead. At the end of last year,the Development Consent Order application was accepted by the Planning Inspectorate for examination, a process which will be ongoing over the next year or so. That’s not the only good news on our railways that the work of the Combined Authority has brought to our region. I was thrilled at last month’s announcement by the Prime Minister of investment to upgrade Bristol East Junction.

My team and I have worked closely with Network Rail and the Government to secure the commitments we need. This is a real boost for our region and a vital step in in realising the full MetroWest network with new destinations and services to make getting around the West of England easier, cleaner and more reliable. On the Severn Beach line, we’re planning direct services to Bath and Westbury, re-opening the Henbury line and more frequent services to Yate. We will also be opening new train stations in Portishead, Henbury, Ashley Down, North Filton, Portway, Pill, and Charfield, with plans for more. This will give 80,000 more people direct access to the rail network and 180,000 will have better services to and from existing stations. The Prime Minister’s announcement also

means that we can get on with building a new Eastern Entrance into Temple Meads, funded through the Combined Authority, simultaneously to the Junction upgrade work. This will save money and inconvenience to passengers to make sure Temple Meads is a fitting gateway to the West of England. Further to the improvements at Temple Meads, we will also be improving access to eight other stations across the region thanks to the Combined Authority’s successful bid to the Government’s “Access for All” fund. This investment will deliver improvements such as accessible access,new waiting areas and better signage. As part of my vision for inclusive growth, it is crucial that all our residents will be able to access the new services which will come with MetroWest.

n MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS Shield Road Primary champions good mental health Recent evidence shows that at least one in ten children will experience a significant mental health issue in their school years. That is, on average, at least three children in each class. Shield Road Primary Staff and Governors are working towards achieving the Health in Schools Mental Wellbeing Award. Headteacher, Jim Mepham, is very positive about the work that is being done by the school to promote the wellbeing of the whole school community. "Increasingly, schools like ours are dealing with the emotional concerns of pupils, and sometimes staff, anxieties, issues relating to poor mental health, food issues, domestic concerns, relationship problems and self- harm. "We can’t expect children to focus well on their school

learning unless we ensure that the school addresses these concerns" To help alleviate some of these elements, the school has currently put all these measures in place: 1. Training for staff on mental wellbeing, attachment issues and emotional coaching. 2. Mentors to support pupils with emotional difficulties and anxieties. 3. Assemblies to promote health and wellbeing. 4. Mindfulness sessions for pupils. 5. In school counselling sessions including work with CAHMS. 6. External referrals for support. 7. Staff wellbeing lunches. 8. Designated Mental Health leaders.

South Glos to keep services local in new scheme South Gloucestershire Council has been revealed as one of the 11 pioneering councils to have signed up to a new national network of councils committed to keeping local services in the hands of local community organisations - Locality’s Keep it Local Network. Keep it Local councils are moving away from bureaucratic commissioning and big outsourcing contracts following a series of high profile failures across the country. Instead they are choosing to unlock the power of community by commissioning local community organisations that put local people at the heart of the services they receive. Charity Locality, who is working on this campaign in partnership with the Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales, is calling on other councils in the area to sign up to the Keep it Local Network. Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, Toby

Savage, said: “We know that our voluntary, community and social enterprise sector has skills, expertise, creativity and fleetness of foot to act locally, which is why we already work with them, right up to the strategic level, as partners and equals. “We want to build on and strengthen that relationship as we develop a new approach to providing services for local people and communities. We’re joining the Keep it Local Network because we know this is the beginning of a journey and recognise the power of learning from other councils in the Network as we make this shift.” Local community organisations have multiple advantages over large national organisations, including keeping public resources invested in the local economy and having in depth local knowledge and connections built up over many years. This means they have a deep understanding of what local

people need. They intervene early and work collaboratively with other community organisations to create services that really work for people. By doing this, not only are councils having a transformative impact on individual lives, they have been shown to deliver savings for local authorities through prevention of demand for other public services. Catherine Coleman, Manager at Southern Brooks Community Partnerships, said: "Often a person will access many of the different projects that we have going on. They stick with their original point of contact whilst accessing everything else that we’ve got. "It means we can really hold someone and support them. We have the time to spend with somebody. We get to know them as a fully rounded person, what they’re interested in, what they care about. That’s why we get such great results, because it’s so holistic.”

after each transaction and cash will not be handled during this period. “Toilet facilities within the Safari Park will be continuously staffed and disinfected, with additional hand washing and sanitising facilities available for guests. “In place of the usual food and

n NEWS HRH The Earl of Wessex spent time with young people, teachers and volunteers from across Horfield, Filton and Southmead who are involved in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) on 11/3/20 during a visit to Orchard School Bristol. The visit was planned to encourage young people from all backgrounds to take part in DofE. Orchard School received Diamond Fund funding in order to be able to support some of their disadvantaged students to be able to take part in the DofE. The impact of this funding has meant that numbers have doubled taking DofE to around 60 and half of our participants are in receipt of Free School Meals. During his visit, The Earl met students and heard more about their experience taking part in the Award. Students demonstrated their rucksack packing skills, camp craft and map reading as well discussing their voluntary work. He also met representatives of the school’s student leadership team. Orchard School currently has 10 student leadership groups with almost 1/3 of the school involved in leadership activities including Student Ambassadors, Library Leaders, Prefects, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, Healthy Heroes and Community Champions. He met representatives from the handball team. Last year our under 13 boys were National Champions and they proudly showed off their cup and winners photo to HRH. Orchard School Headteacher Julia Hinchliffe said: “The students were very excited to meet the Earl today. It is wonderful when VIPs visit our school and show our young people that what we do here at Orchard really counts. The Earl showed a genuine interest in the students’ progress on their DofE Award. “The Award offers an unrivalled opportunity for students to develop their skills and character in a wide range of activities and voluntary work.” Orchard School DofE coordinator and teacher of English Kirsty Newcombe said: “Our students get huge benefit from all the aspects of their DofE work but crucially, they also thoroughly enjoy taking part. success in the workplace and beyond. To build the list, the DofE surveyed more than 4,000 people including members of the public, business leaders, education professionals, parents and young people. Many of the experiences and activities that appear on the List can be done as part of the DofE. Achieving a DofE Award helps young people to enhance both personal and professional skills, empowering them to unlock their potential. It provides young people with the opportunity to have new experiences whilst volunteering, learning a skill, getting fit, planning and going on an expedition and, at Gold Level, taking part in a residential activity. Any young person aged 14-24 years old can do their DofE, regardless of ability, gender, background or location and it isn’t a competition or

n UPDATE FROM FILTON MP JACK LOPRESTI: COVID 19 The COVID 19 Corona virus emergency is making us all re-think how we organise our lives. This is a particularly urgent public health emergency, which has significant consequences for our jobs, communities and the way we interact with each other. This is a time for us all, as a community, to step up and think about how we can help each other, even as we try to keep ourselves safe. Hopefully everybody has now seen the advice which has been posted by the Government, South Gloucestershire Council, the Red Cross and other agencies. All of this is good practical common sense, and the various links offer further guidance on matters of concern for us all. Moreover, this is an opportunity for us to reach out to our neighbours and friends, to ensure their wellbeing. It is easy to assume that someone else, or the Government will take care of things. Certainly Government is taking the lead, but we as citizens and neighbours have an opportunity to do a little bit extra. My office and I are at your

disposal, to help with any problems you may be experiencing with Government agencies or local authorities. My team will do what they can to assist. We are exercising precautions regarding meeting people, but if in doubt, please call my office. It is heart-warming to see how local community initiatives are arising to respond to this emergency. Elderly citizens and those who have underlying health conditions, are particularly vulnerable, but they still need to feel that they are part of our community, and can rely on all our support. Council backs new package for care leavers An enhanced package of support for care leavers in Filton and other areas will be offered by South Glos Council. At the Council’s March Cabinet meeting, a number of new recommendations to further improve the care leavers’ local offer were agreed, building on the support already committed to by the authority. A care leaver is any adult who spent time in care as a child (i.e. under the age of 18). Such care could be in foster care, residential care (mainly children's homes), or other arrangements outside the

immediate or extended family. The new offer was designed in conjunction with care leavers, and includes the following: • Signing up to the national Care Leavers’ Covenant • Adopting a care leavers’ champions model where councillors champion a particular work area, meet operational staff and care leavers to fully understand their journey and offer a pledge • Opportunities for education, employment & training, including the development of specialist support related

to attending university, aspirations, applications and ongoing support. Each department is requested to commit to: 1. Six internal supported internship (two per department) year on year aimed for those with an Education Health and Care plan 2. Nine traineeships (three per department) year on year 3.
