Distraction alert
Police are reminding people in Filton to be alert after a number of distraction burglaries were reported in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Officers received three reports on March 24 of incidents involving men calling at homes claiming to be from a water company and asking to check the supply. One was reported in Mortimer Road in the Filton area of Bristol, with others in Redland and Coalpit Heath. Police are investigating the incidents and have carried out house-to-house enquiries while they have also provided crime prevention advice to the victims. Genuine council or utility staff will offer identification and will be happy for residents to check it before you let them in. If you’re in any doubt about a visitor, ring police straight away

‘Self-funded’ festival set for return in July by Rebecca Day Due to popular demand, Filton Festival is returning to Elm Park this summer - and the town council says it will be selffunding. A lack of cash, and Filton Town Council having to prioritise its spending, meant that the annual event failed to go ahead last year. But the town council has announced that it will be taking place this year, and is due to be held on Sunday, July 24, 12-5pm. Details are still to be confirmed, but festival goers can expect bands, stalls, fairground attractions, among other activities. Organisers are now calling on

local musicians to come forward to perform on the afternoon. Lesley Reuben, the town clerk, said that the festival would also provide a perfect opportunity for any local groups who are wanting to raise money. She confirmed that the event would be self-funded. In December 2014, councillors decided to cancel the 2015 festival after hearing that £4,000 of council money was needed to help the event break even. The festival will be free to enter, but car owners will be charged £1 for parking. If interested in performing or for more information, visit: www.filtontowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01454 866698.

After Filtonvoice printed the consultation document last month, residents have been returning them in their dozens to the local drop-off points (see panel right) and also to the South Glos Freepost number. South Glos needs to makes savings and has suggested libraries could be affected: 1. If opening hours were reduced by 19% (90 hours) in the realm of the target of £500k could be achieved. 2. Satellite libraries (inc Filton) could be staffed and operated by the Council for two days (18 hours) per week. Local groups and volunteers could fund additional hours. 3. All libraries could be closed except identified main libraries. These are currently proposed
as Kingswood, Yate, Patchway, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke. The consultation runs until May 13. Filton councillor Jo Ward, who has been leading the campaign to save the library, said statistics revealed: l Filton has a lower number of staff compared to libraries open the same hours (3.7 FTE) l The IT usage at Filton is particularly high, much higher than the area average Meanwhile South Glos councillor Adam Monk has said funding from Government has been allocated by the Conservative-led council to reduce charges for the green bin service by £6 per year per user. He said: “With this in mind I would ask people when completing the consultation form to say they would rather retain our current library service than receive a 50p per month reduction on green bin charges.”

Eagles at War, by Ben Kane Book review by a Filton Library reader I was transported back in time with this, the first book in the Eagles of War series. Although it is a work of fiction, it is peopled by historical characters and is based on real events. The battle of the Teutoburg Forest, or Varian Disaster, took place in Germany, in September of AD 9. East of the river Rhine, tribes hostile to Rome prepare a deadly ambush. Their leader is the charismatic chieftain Arminius who dreams of driving out the brutal invaders of his land. Lucius, Tullus and the Roman provincial governor Varus are pitted against him. Together with three local legions they leave their camp to begin the march back to the Roman forts on the Rhine.
There in the Forest three Roman legions are massacred by native tribes in this supremely well executed ambush. Kane delivers a novel that is very atmospheric. You can almost feel as if you are there in the muddy Teutoburg Forest. Ben Kane will be appearing at Filton Library on Wednesday 13th April at 7.30pm where he will be talking about these dramatic events. Free tickets are available from the library or from www. eventbrite.co.uk/e/romesgreatest-defeat-ambushin-the-german-forests-ad9-with-ben-kane-tickets5426286168?aff=ebrowse

Verdict soon on George junction The £50,000 report into traffic problems at the junction of the A4174 ring road with Filton Avenue is set to be presented to South Glos councillors. But any recommendations could take up to two years to put in place - if there is funding to do the work. Filtonvoice reported last February that persistent complaints by residents about traffic flow around the junction near the former King George pub had led to the report being commissioned by South Glos. Problems include the bus stop on Filton Avenue heading to Bristol causing delays as traffic turns off the ring road, as well as residents in Conygre ward having to drive to the Abbeywood roundabout and turning around to get to the other side of Filton Avenue. Currently cars cannot cross the junction in the Bristol direction.
Councillor Roger Hutchinson at the junction of Filton Avenue and the ring road
At Filton Town Council’s March meeting, residents said they were fed up with the situation, some reporting that traffic between 3.30pm and 6pm was so heavy that the area was practically in gridlock most days. Councillor Keith Briffett said: “We’ve been listening to this for three years and it will be another

two years before anything is implemented. We’ve got to start shouting or we’ll get nothing in the future.” Councillor John Tucker said: “There has been too much emphasis on the needs of people who work in the area and not enough on the residents.” One resident described the
report as a”waste of money” while another said it was frustrating that even late at night, when there is little traffic, the north/south route across the junction was not available. One member of the public noted that it was ironic that buses could go north to south but that was irrelevant because Conygre did not have a bus service. South Glos councillor Roger Hutchinson said he was expecting the report to be presented in the next few weeks but insisted the situation was not a “quick fix”. He said that opening the junction north to south to cars might solve one problem but could lead to rat runs in places like Conygre Grove and other streets as drivers used Filton Avenue as a route towards Horfield and on to the city centre.

In or out? Our local Filton politicians give their views on the European Referendum debate
In June, Britain will vote whether or not to remain in the European Union. Filtonvoice has asked local politicians and residents what the impact will be one way or the other, especially on local communities South Glos Labour councillor Ian Scott: “I will be voting for Britain to stay in the European Union because I believe that is the best way of attracting high quality jobs and international investment to the Filton Airfield. site in the future. “For example Airbus Group expects the competitiveness
of its British operations to fall if Britons vote to leave the European Union in a referendum, potentially threatening the scale of the planemaker’s operations in the country.” Filton Town Council UKIP councillor Keith Briffett: “For 40 years the EU has taken away our sovereignty. We pay a massive amount in and get nothing back. “We’re beholden to the EU
for money. The scaremongering over Airbus is cobblers. “There’s no reason why we couldn’t still trade sensibly in Europe.” Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti “I was delighted when the Conservative Government delivered on a referendum.
“David Cameron did his best (over renegotiations) but it was impossible to get meaningful reform. We need to be free to selfgovern. “There is also the issue of security. “We cannot continue in the EU and keep track of all the people coming in as well as get to grips with mass migration.”

South Glos Labour councillor Adam Monk: “I will be voting to remain within the EU. For many reasons, whatever the outcome the UK is extremely reliant and influenced by the EU. The only way you can influence this is to be part of it.” Filton Town Council UKIP councillor Alan Tink: “One of the issues I have been involved in recently is the reports that over 600,000 National Insurance Numbers have been issued in the past year to new arrivals. If this is confirmed then it is no wonder the health service and the benefit system is oversubscribed. This is of course is one reason why the UK needs to get back control of its borders.”

country like Spain or France, even Germany where precision engineering is renowned. Airbus being one of the largest employers in the area will, even if only down-sized, have a noticeable impact to Filton. No “out” advocates have yet spelt out how this will be good for the UK. Sean Walsh I have yet to hear a coherent rational “No” argument. I await it with interest. When people talk about EU stopping stuff, what tangibly is being stopped? What don’t I have? Currently I have some good EU sponsored employment/parental rights good standard of quality control. the right to travel easily etc. What will I get if we leave? The usual things abound, control of borders security and less red tape. Most terrorists in the modern age are home grown. Helen Monk I don’t think we know enough or even anything at all yet. At the moment all we have to go by are the views of the ‘IN’ people who just surmise and scaremonger with no basis what-so-ever that Airbus will retreat to France/ Germany/Spain, Rolls-Royce (cars) will go back to Germany and Joe’s Bakery will stop selling rolls. Against this the ‘OUT’ people whose views with no basis whatso-ever are that if we don’t come out of the EU they’ll be no jobs at

Airbus/ Rolls-Royce/Filton for any British people and no school places, doctors appointments and cheese and onion pasties at Greggs. I long for facts on how this will affect us at a local, and National level but sadly we don’t have any.
The EU referendum will take place on 23 June 2016. Membership of the European Union has been a topic of debate since we country joined the European Economic Community, as it was known then, in 1973. Some of those in favour of a British withdrawal argue that being a member of the EU undermines Parliamentary sovereignty, while some in favour of membership argue that any loss of sovereignty is compensated by the benefits of membership of the EU. It is argued by those that support withdrawal that it would allow the UK to be better able to control immigration, be in a better position to conduct its own trade negotiations. Those in favour of remaining argue that leaving would risk the UK’s prosperity, diminish its influence over world affairs and jeopardize security.
Mike Waines Snr From what I can see if we vote out we save twice ,once by not paying into the central fund and then by not paying locally on benefits and infrastructure for economic migrants. Ken Hoare I personally think it will be a good thing to stay in the E.U to secure human rights and jobs in this country. Jules Trucks I’m waiting to hear an argument either way that doesn’t involve fear tactics or blaming immigrants for everything. I’d just like some unbiased facts and figures.

Head teacher calls on MP to help tackle parents’ pavement parking
A Bristol primary head teacher says urgent action is needed to protect children’s safety near the school gates. Amanda Pritchard, head of St Teresa’s Catholic Primary in Horfield, said motorists are frequently seen mounting the pavement outside the school in Luckington Road. She said she has seen vehicles with all four wheels on the pavement and others moving on the pavements as drivers try to pass each other on the narrow street, which is residential opposite the school. Now the school has enlisted the help of their local MP, Charlotte Leslie, and Councillor Claire Hiscott to investigate a solution. Measures such as a voluntary one-way system down Luckington Road have failed, in part because some drivers do not
Chair of governors Alex FlahertyWeeks, MP Charlotte Leslie, head teacher Amanda Pritchard and St Teresa’s pupils outside the school know it exists. And Mrs Pritchard says a small minority of parents habitually park on the pavement at dropping-off and picking-up time. She said the school gets lots of support from PCSOs but on days when they do not patrol, the bad driving habits return. The school is now investigating the possibility of

She said: “Our priority is pupil safety and I am deeply concerned at the number of car drivers who feel the need to park and drive on the pavement while families are walking to school. “It would only require a small
misjudgment for a child to be struck and the consequences do not bear thinking about. “I know this is an issue for many schools and we are hoping we can come up with a solution which is acceptable but, more importantly, will guarantee safety at the school gate.” St Teresa’s has been a leading supporter of walk-to-school initiatives and some families “park and stride”, where they leave their car a distance from the school and walk the remainder. Ms Leslie said: “Clearly a solution is needed before an accident happens. We need a combination of parental education as well as an effective solution which keeps cars off the pavement. Along with Councillor Hiscott, I will work with Mrs Pritchard and the school to help them achieve this.”

by Rebecca Day A young Filton entrepreneur has made it onto a prestigious list that recognises people supporting the next generation of business talent. Ash Phillips, 26, has claimed a spot in the Maserati 100 – launched by the Italian car manufacturer and the Centre for Entrepreneurs – which lists some of Britain’s most successful philanthropists, investors, mentors, advisors, and ascending entrepreneurs. It has included the likes of business tycoon Sir Richard Branson and Dragons’ Den panellist Peter Jones CBE. Ash was nominated for the award by his peers for establishing the Young Entrepreneurs Network Association (YENA), a social enterprise, helping aspiring business owners to succeed. A panel of experts from the Centre for Entrepreneurs, including its founder, Luke Johnson, then curated the final list. “I was in utter disbelief when I found out,” Ash said. “I’d been looking at a number of different awards to go for, to raise the profile of YENA, but
never thought I'd be listed in the Maserati 100. I thought there was no chance. “It's incredibly inspiring and motivating as there are amazing people on the list, including Jamal Edwards, the founder of [broadcasting company] SBTV, so it’s great to be part of that.” Ash set up YENA in 2013 as a side project to provide networking opportunities for people aged 15 to 30. It now has over 750 members, and operates in Bristol, Bath, Manchester and Birmingham, as well as online. Monthly events provide a chance for young entrepreneurs to share ideas and hear from guest speakers, who have included IMDb (Internet Movie Database) founder Cole Needham. “When I used to go along to networking events, I always felt like the youngest person there. That’s when I decided to set up YENA, to encourage younger people to come together and share ideas.” Ash went to the University of the West of England (UWE) to study Business Enterprise, but left within eight months after realising his dream was
Families join celebration as project closes Southern Brooks Community Partnerships held an event to celebrate the achievements made by one of its family support projects as it was officially closed after six years. The initiative, which provided one-to-one support for more than 600 families experiencing a crisis, received funding from the Big Lottery, which has now come to an end. Corrina Wood, health and well being manager, said: “We have been very proud to be part of this project and feel privileged to have been able to work with families who are often in such a vulnerable place. The work has been demanding and challenging, but has also been emotional and rewarding. Families allow us to become part of their life when they are at their lowest; they let us in and share their thoughts and feelings when they are in the darkest of places. “We have the opportunity to reach out a hand and guide them
towards the light at the end of the tunnel. There are not many jobs that enable you to make such a difference to people’s lives.” The event was attended by professionals, councillors and families who had benefited from the project. One parent said: “I was desperate and did not know where to turn. The support has helped me see things in perspective. My son would have got out of control and life would be unbearable.” Through additional funding, the team were also able to take vulnerable families on day trips during the summer. The Southern Brooks Community Partnerships is continuing to face funding cuts and is currently in consultation with South Gloucestershire Council over future support and the impact cuts would have on its services, with leaders raising fears the number of families it supports could drop from 150 at any one time to 30.

Ash has founded YENA, which provides networking opportunities for people aged 15 to 30 The day Ash decided to leave Gumption, and commit to YENA full-time, was when he received the email about being listed in the Maserati 100. “It was a very serendipitous moment, and marked start of the next exciting
to become an entrepreneur. He went on to run a number of businesses – some succeeding and others failing – before becoming a partner for 18 months at Gumption, a social media marketing agency.

chapter in my career,” he said. Ash, who is is one of the first members in his family to own his own business, says that YENA caters to any aspiring entrepreneur or professional, regardless of their background
and financial stability. He said: “It’s not easy to start out as a young entrepreneur, especially if you don't have the correct knowledge and financial backing. It can be quite intimidating. “But YENA is about bringing these young people together, who have ideas, and working out ways we can help them achieve their goals. “We want to be connecting people early, to create business leaders of the future.” Ash currently runs YENA as a not-for-profit enterprise, but plans to monetise the business by introducing membership options, seminars and workshops at affordable prices. He also hopes to establish co-working spaces for members on a local level, as well as expand his business globally. He aims to gain 2,500 members by the end of the year. Could you help someone in need?
Barbara is a volunteer sitter: she and Irene enjoy knitting together.
Carers Support Centre, which runs a sitting service offering companionship for people with illnesses and mental health problems, is seeking Filton volunteers. The local charity links the volunteers with family carers and the person they care for. They provide this service FREE to carers across South Gloucestershire, but currently have a long waiting list and they urgently need to recruit more volunteers. A carer is someone who cares, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health problems. Volunteers give their time regularly and build a relationship with the cared for person. They typically volunteer for 2- 3 hours per week or fortnight. They are given training and ongoing support. Their help means a carer

can take regular time out…to meet friends, go shopping, or simply enjoy a hobby. Marilyn Crump, Sitting Service Co-ordinator, said: “A volunteer needs to be someone a carer can trust and who wants to build a relationship with the cared for person. We train volunteers so that we can match them carefully to a family.” Case study Ray is 69 and cares for his wife, Irene. She has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. They have been married for 48 years and, for the last three, Irene has been a totally different person: it has been heart-breaking for him. Since Irene’s diagnosis Ray has experienced a loss of independence, until he found a sitter through the Carers Support Centre. They matched Irene with Barbara, who visits once a week and the two have really hit it off. Ray is really enjoying being able to see his friends again. He said, “The sitting service is a lifesaver. It is just two hours a week, but you can put up with an awful lot if you know that you can get a break. It’s the only time I meet up with friends I’ve known for 50 years. Barbara is a very creative person and Irene always seems to be quite happy when I get back in. Just recently Barbara has got.” To find out more, contact Marilyn Crump, Sitting Service Co-ordinator. For further information about these, please read the consultation document. How strongly do you agree or disagree with the following models of delivering library services? Strongly agree
Tend to agree
Neither agree or Tend to Strongly disagree disagree disagree
Don't know
Using volunteers to work alongside staff to support added value services such as storytime, using computers, events, etc Using volunteers to work alongside staff, with clearly defined roles for each Using volunteers to supplement library opening hours without paid staff supervision Services run and operated directly by community based organisations and volunteers Bringing in external funding (e.g. from parish councils or grants) to fund additional opening hours and other library running costs Co-locating council one stop shops and potentially other services within libraries in Kingswood, Yate, Patchway and Thornbury Renting out space to generate income to support library services Transferring libraries to be run by a not-for-profit organisation, trust, charity or staff mutual Transferring libraries to be run by a commercial (for profit) organisation Unstaffed self service libraries
Q6
Of the options outlined in the consultation document by the council to make the required savings to the library budget, which do you think the council should proceed with? Option 1: No longer providing the mobile library or funding Chipping Sodbury library, reducing opening hours across the remaining libraries by 88 hours a week, reducing the materials fund and making more use of volunteers and external funding to maintain services. (saving approx. £500,000) Option 2: As per option one and a reduction in opening hours to 18 hours a week at satellite libraries. (saving approx. £600-£650,000) Option 3: Close all libraries apart from five main libraries (saving approx. £1million) The council should make savings within library services in a different way (please tell us how in Q7 below) The council should make alternative savings from other council services (please tell us how in Q7 below) Don't know
Q7
The council is keen to consider any other alternative ideas by library users, local communities and other interested stakeholders in how it can deliver services within the budget available. Do you have any alternative ideas for how library services could be delivered in the future?
Q8
Do you have any specific comments about the proposal to no longer fund Chipping Sodbury library?
Q9
Do you have any specific comments about the proposal to no longer provide the mobile library service?
Q10
One option the council is considering is designating each library as either a main library or a satellite library. Main libraries would have longer opening hours and potentially more services funded when compared to satellite libraries which would have more limited opening hours. Looking at the main population centres and future population growth, the council is considering making Kingswood, Yate, Patchway, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke main libraries, with the remainder designated as satellite libraries. Do you agree with our proposed designation of main and satellite libraries? Yes
No
Don't know
If no, what changes would you make and why?
Q11
If the council were to reduce library opening hours, how should these reductions be distributed? All libraries reduce opening hours by a set amount e.g. 7 1/2hrs a week Library opening hours are reduced depending on whether a library is classed as a main library or satellite e.g. main libraries are reduced by 5hrs a week and satellite libraries by 10 hours a week Hours are reduced depending on individual library usage patterns No longer opening on Sundays, and less busy times such as early in the morning, over lunch time or in the evenings
Q12
Do you have any specific comments about the proposals to reduce library opening hours?
Q13
If other organisations or volunteers are more involved in supporting the delivery of library services in the future, what support and/or training do you think they will need?
Q14
Would you (as an individual or organisation) be willing to provide practical support (or volunteering) to keep your local library open? Yes
Maybe
No
If so, please provide details of how we can contact you
Q15
If these options were to go ahead, what impact would they have on you, your use of library services and the wider community?

Guides celebrate their connections near and far at a fun-packed event Filton Guides honoured the founders of the movement with an all-action “Thinking Day” for more than 100 girls. The senior section of Girlguiding Concorde Division celebrated their centenary with a day of activities at St Andrew’s Church, Filton, where members of the Rangers, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides all came together to remember Lord and Lady Baden Powell. The theme of the day was “making connections” and eight different activity bases gave girls the chance to find out about Girlguiding in other countries and to meet members of other units. Activities included international food tasting, origami, parachute games, a treasure hunt and quiz, trustbuilding exercises and making posters, as well as the chance to find out about connections with Guides worldwide and a history of Guiding uniforms. A spokesperson said: “St Andrew’s Church hall, kitchen and adjacent rooms were buzzing with energy and alive with the sound of laughter. “Girls were led blindfolded through obstacles and corridors in order to learn to trust their fellow Guides, then they were ushered into the kitchen where a

and aeroplanes gave the girls a chance to focus quietly on their creative talents. “The whole afternoon was a resounding success, and an excellent way to mark the centenary of the senior section of Girl Guides.” For more information about Guiding, visit www.girlguiding. org.uk

by Rebecca Day Filton B&Q is set to close its doors this summer, it has been announced. An email was sent to customers of the store, based in Stoke Gifford, confirming that it will be closing in June, and that all stocks are being reduced. It is the second B&Q to close in the Bristol area - Muller Road the first - was after the DIY company revealed last March that it will be axeing 60 of its UK stores. The decision was made by the new CEO of B&Q’s parent company Kingfisher, Veronique Laury. A B&Q spokesperson said: “We are changing the shape of our store network in Bristol and investing to ensure we meet the needs of our customers in the city and the surrounding area

Explosives team is called to Rolls site Bomb disposal experts and police were called to the former Rolls-Royce factory last month after a discovery by a demolition company working at the site in Gipsy Patch Lane. The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in by police to assess the item, which was then removed from the site. It is not yet known what the object was, however, EOD engineers specialise in the safe disposal of mines, shells and bombs which have failed to explode. The surrounding area, which includes the airfield, was once the setting for a raid during the Second World War. The Filton Blitz, on September 25, 1940, destroyed a number of air raid shelters, claiming the lives of 200 people. The Rolls-Royce site has been lying vacant since 2007, when the aerospace company moved to a newly-built facility across the road. A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police said: “At 12.34pm on March 22, we received a call from an employee with a demolition company about an item found during construction work on a former industrial site in Gipsy Patch Lane, Patchway. “The EOD attended and the item was assessed and taken away.” Following the incident, a spokesperson from the Army said that they did not have any more details to add.

Go-ahead gives wings to Airbus’s state-of-the-art facility at Filton Airbus has won permission to build a state-of-the-art research and development centre on its Filton site. The building will house a facility for the development of new wing technologies and will be constructed as part of the company’s Wings of the Future Programme. South Gloucestershire Council granted the Airbus Wing Integration Centre the go-ahead last month. It will be built on the former Rodney Works site off the A38 and will also house the main hangar for wing and component testing, staff facilities, offices and laboratories. Welcoming the news, leader of South Gloucestershire Council Councillor Matthew Riddle said: “We are pleased to see Airbus make progress with this development, which
will increase their Filton operations and further help to establish our region as a centre
of excellence in the aviation industry. This represents significant investment, which
helps to ensure that the North Fringe area continues to thrive as a major economic driver, employment area and as a major hub for commercial activity in the South West.” Mark Stewart, HR director and general manager for Airbus UK, said: “The joint investment in this project with the UK Government under ATI will give us the technological edge in a fiercely competitive global business and will benefit not just Airbus sites at Filton and Broughton but the wider UK aerospace industry. “The new facility once again reinforces the strategic importance of Filton and will enable the best knowledge and skills in aerospace to develop new and cutting-edge ideas, helping underpin the UK as one of the world’s leading aerospace sectors.”

An impressive show of five Sea Kings helicopters were captured gracing the skies over Filton last month. These images were taken by Cheswick resident and photographer Mark O’Grady. His fiancee Louise Groth’s father – who has now sadly passed away – worked on the helicopters many years ago when he was stationed at HMS Daedalus in Portsmouth. The flypast was part of the Somerset-based Sea Kings’ farewell tour across the region, before being decommissioned after almost 40 years of service in the Royal Navy. The aircraft has served in recent major conflicts, including the Gulf War and Bosnian conflict.

Store’s gift to help fund vital exercise sessions Shoppers have helped a Bristol charity win £200 towards its work supporting people with a painful form of arthritis that affects around 200,000 in the UK. The Bristol North branch of the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society has been presented with a cheque by Lisa Godber, the Community Life Champion from Asda Patchway. The charity was chosen by store staff as one of three – alongside Lawrence Weston Community Transport and 178th Bristol (Shirehampton) Brownies – to compete for the £200 first prize and two runner-up prizes of £50. Throughout December, customers cast their votes for one of the three good causes, with Bristol North NASS coming out on top.
The group was founded in March 1998 and meets every Wednesday evening in Southmead Hospital for specialist physiotherapy exercise, where sufferers can use the gym or the hydrotherapy pool. Lisa visited the group during
one of their weekly meetings and was shown around the facilities and met members as they exercised. The group plans to use the store’s donation to go towards funding the sessions at Southmead Hospital.

Warning on hospital visits as virus strikes
Filton residents are being warned that cases of norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, are on the rise across South Gloucestershire. Health chiefs are urging anyone with symptoms of the highly-contagious virus not to go into hospital to visit friends or relatives and to be extra careful when it comes to hygiene. Dr Jonathan Hayes, South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group clinical chair, said: “If a vulnerable patient contracts norovirus it could have potentially serious health implications. You are doing the right thing for patients by staying away until 48 hours after any norovirus symptoms disappear.” Simple measures that can help people avoid spreading the virus include washing hands regularly with soap and water, avoiding sharing towels and ensuring surfaces that an infected person may have touched are disinfected.

Record numbers apply to Abbeywood
Abbeywood Community School is enjoying its highest number of 1st preference applications since becoming an academy Last month, local families received their offers of Year 7 school place for September which saw a steep increase in popularity for the school The number of applications was as follows: Abbeywood (180 places) 1st choice 176 2nd choice 103 3rd choice 68 Total applications 347 Abbeywood enjoyed an impressive 33% rise in first choice applications (132-176) on last year which shows the
level of confidence in the school, now rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in all areas, and the successful partnership with Bradley Stoke as part of the Olympus Academy Trust. No other local secondary
schools were oversubscribed on first preference (on time) applications. Dave Baker, Executive Headteacher and CEO, The Olympus Academy Trust, said: “We are delighted to see the
ongoing success of Abbeywood, a thriving school at the heart of its local community. The school is only 4 places short of being fully subscribed this year on 1st preference applications after only 3 full years as a member of The Olympus Academy Trust – a testament to our ability to deliver rapid school improvement in partnership. “Our Board of Directors and senior leaders share a desire to provide the local community with a range of ‘good’ schools to choose from; aligning practice and processes to produce better student outcomes, whilst celebrating each school’s unique identity.”
“I could write a sonnet, about your Easter Bonnet!”
On the last day of the Easter Term, pupils from Charborough Road took part in an Easter Bonnet parade, attended by a huge audience of parents, families and friends. Every child had designed and made a bonnet, which they wore to the parade. When they assembled in the hall, they all sang together, and prizes were awarded to the most interesting designs. Our VIP judges were Mr Adrian Williams (Community Governor) and Mrs Williams, as well as Olympus Academy Trust colleagues Mr Steve Moir and Mrs Owen (Headteacher and Senior Leader from Bradley Stoke Community School). There was also a raffle, raising funds for school library books.

A sea spectacular at the Colston Hall Hundreds of schoolchildren from Bristol climbed the rigging, scrubbed the decks and battened down the hatches as they performed Ahoy! – an exciting new performance based on King Henry VIII’s warship, the Mary Rose – in front of a big audience at the Colston Hall. With One Voice Partnership (WOVP) – a collaboration between schools in North Bristol – joined up with Bristol Plays Music and the Bristol Choral Society to get pupils to take part in the performance at the Colston Hall. The schools involved were: Orchard School Bristol, Filton Avenue Primary, Upper Horfield Primary, Fonthill Primary, St Teresa’s Catholic Primary, Horfield CofE Primary and Stoke Park Primary The hour-long choral cantata – a vocal composition with an instrumental accompaniment – was composed by Alexander L’Estrange and celebrates the tragic and inspiring story of the
Mary Rose, which sank 500 years ago. The boat was raised in 1982 and now acts as a time capsule, providing the public with a unique insight into the Tudor times. The performance included narration, a jazz quintet, a unison choir, a four part chamber choir, and a two part choir. Helen Howard of With One Voice said: “It was an absolutely magical evening. All the children really entered into the spirit with their costumes and fantastic performances. “For many of them it will have been their first performance at a venue like the Colston Hall and I know the parents and friends who came to watch were so proud. “We are really grateful to Bristol Plays Music, the Bristol Choral Society, Alexander L’Estrange and all the talented music teachers who supported the children.”

by Rebecca Day The owner of a Filton computer shop says that he is realising the benefits of moving his business to Gloucester Road North. Goto iT – which offers computer support and repairs across Bristol – moved from opposite the old King George pub at the top of Filton Avenue, where it was based for four years, to Gloucester Road North at the beginning of February this year. Owner Graham Simmonds says that he decided to relocate to the former Great Western Air Ambulance office because it provided a much larger space to work and be more efficient. He said: “It will also give us a springboard to really grow the business while staying in the area which has supported us really well.” Graham started his business in 1999 and has since built up a strong customer base, supporting more than 1,000 clients, including Bristol residents, businesses, the NHS and charities. Goto iT prides itself on offering friendly, jargon-free advice, as well as a range of
services, from IT health checks to building new computers. In addition, the shop carries out home visits and sells a range of accessories. It is also recognised as a silver “Small and Midmarket Cloud Solutions” partner, which means it has been acknowledged by Microsoft as an expert in its cloud-based products. Graham said: “I’ve received some great comments since moving to Gloucester Road North and customers have been saying how much more spacious and welcoming it is. “It’s a great community to be part of and there’s a good footfall. It is also up and coming, with new shops and businesses opening in the area.” Graham adds that he plans to expand into the upper two floors of the building. “Now that we’ve moved to a bigger space, we’re starting to think about what more we can offer and have a few plans in mind.” For more information about goto iT’s services, visit goto-it. co.uk or like the Facebook page “gotoitcomputers”. Drop in at 28 Gloucester Road North, Filton or call 0117 969 8767.
Volunteer to help carers get support
Volunteers are needed to ensure local carers looking after sick, disabled or elderly relatives or friends are accessing all the support and services that are on offer to them. The Carers Support Centre Bristol and South Gloucestershire is hoping to recruit outgoing individuals who could spend two mornings a month meeting and greeting carers when they visit their GP surgeries and giving them information. Full training and support is provided to volunteers and more information is available from Mike Hatch, GP Carer Link Volunteer, on 07503 577830 or email mikeh@carerssupportcentre. or.uk Carers can contact the organisation on the Carersline on 0117 965 2200 or visit www. carerssupportcentre.org.uk
