Wurzels set for long overdue festival return

by Rebecca Day Drink up thy zider – The Wurzels are returning to Filton Festival this summer!

The band – best known for their number one hit Combine Harvester as well as the popular song I Am A Cider Drinker – told Filtonvoice that they are “very excited” to be headlining the event, and recalled performing at the festival 10 years ago.

Tommy Banner – The Wurzels’ longest-serving band member, who is usually seen playing the accordion – said: “[We’re] very excited about playing once more at Filton Festival.

“I think we must be back by public demand, because the last time we did it was July 9, 2006.

“Let’s hope it’s not another ten years till we get invited back.”

Filton Town Council – which organises the festival – announced that it is pleased to welcome back the “the West Country’s pride and joy”. The band was formed in 1966.

The family-friendly event will be taking place on July 24, from noon to 5pm at Elm Park Playing Fields. Besides The Wurzels, festival-goers can enjoy other live music, stalls, fairground attractions, and other fun activities.

Organisers are calling on local bands to join the musical line-up.

Filton MP to lead battle for Brexit

Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti has been appointed regional coordinator for the Vote Leave Campaign in the South West in the run-up to the referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union.

Mr Lopresti said: “The coming weeks are absolutely vital as nothing is more important to me than the successful future of our nation and so I am delighted to have been given this important job. We have to win for the sake of Britain; for the sake of our democracy, our freedom, for our security and for the supremacy of our parliament and judicial system. I will be campaigning for our country to be a free, selfgoverning country again.”

The referendum will be held on June 23.

Town councillors give a lukewarm reaction to Filton Parkrun Councillors in Filton have given a lukewarm reaction to the possibility of hosting ‘Parkrun’ at Elm Park.

The popular event, which happen across the world, involves runners turning up to take part in a free, timed 5k run in parkland surroundings.

Last month there was controversy in Stoke Gifford when the parish council decided that in future they would have to charge Parkrun to host the event, which usually attracts around 300 runners.

Parkrun organisers said they did not want to set a precedent and would be looking elsewhere.

In Filton, Councillor Adam Monk tabled a motion which would have seen town clerk Lesley Reuben investigating implications for Filton hosting a parkrun.

Although there is a £3,000 cost to be a parkrun site, there can be benefits, with runners

spending money in council facilities.

Cllr Monk was unable to attend the meeting but councillors spoke informally at the town council meeting, citing parking and the condition of the field as possible drawbacks.

Councillor Alan Tink said: “I have had nothing but trouble over this matter.

“The idea is not going down well in the local community.

“The car park would be saturated by cars.”

Councillor Stan Sims said: “The problem could be that the footballers would say that if the runners don’t have to pay, why should we.”

Councillor Keith Briffet said: “It comes down to the amount of people and the congestion they would cause.”

Councillors also said that while Stoke Gifford has a tarmac track, Elm Park does not and there were fears the bottom

Older people in Filton set to benefit from community grant A South Gloucestershire-based care provider has re-opened its Community Grant scheme – a sum of money that could benefit any local group in Filton working with older people or those living with a disability.

Bluebird Care South Gloucestershire opened its office in Chipping Sodbury over two years ago, and ever since has been working hard to support other organisations across the district.

Last year, Filton-based lunch club, She 7, received a cheque for £250 in recognition for the work the group does to tackle isolation among the elderly, and provide a lifeline and support network for those who wouldn’t have one otherwise.

Bluebird Care was inspired by the dedication of 95 year old Ruth Perkins, who has run the

group for more than 40 years.

Despite her senior years, Ruth organises the activities each week, makes sure all the meals are cooked and prepared, and raises money to cover all the group’s operational costs.

Jack Whitfield, managing director, said: “So many neighbourhoods thrive because of volunteers who work tirelessly to run community groups.”

The care provider is making available £250 to a community group or initiative that works with older people within the Filton area.

Bluebird Care is a local provider of care in the home.

They work with customers who suffer from dementia, physical and learning disabilities.

Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.

These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and they encourage people of every ability to take part, from those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; and from juniors to those with more experience.

Visit www.parkrun.org.uk of the field could become a mudbath in wet conditions.

Cllr Monk, who has taken part in the Stoke Gifford event, said he would still call for an investigation when the council meets later this month.

He said: “We need to explore the possibilities.

“We can’t rule something out on hearsay.

“The question is whether we could accommodate it.

“I do see that parking is an issue but on the other hand we would have 300/400 people

on the site, using the facilities and being made aware of the facilities.

“Perhaps we could offer postrun swims to raise revenue.

“On the issue of the field, again we need to investigate but some park runners I have spoken to say they like mixed terrain .. grass and paths.”

Cllr Monk’s proposal for an investigation will be discussed at the full council meeting on May 31 in the Doug Daniels Pavilion, Elm Park. l See Page 21 for details

Filton: we want to save our library Save Filton Library Filton residents have a clear message for South Glos Council: we want to keep our library.

Local people have responded in their hundreds to the consultation, which ended on May 13, looking into the future of the library service.

South Glos say that across the local authority area, around 3,000 responses had been received - which Filtonvoice understands is the biggest response to a consultation in the history of the council.

Filton library users staged a demonstration outside the library at the Shield Retail Park last month, led by town councillor Jo Ward.

They showed support for keeping the library open and signed a petition and the consultation form, which was printed in Filtonvoice.

Residents fear that library services could be relocated to Patchway, making it hard for people without transport to use.

Opponents of the changes say the council priorities are wrong.

Labour has said the council should reverse its plans to reduce green bin collection charges while MP Jack Lopresti has said savings could be made elsewhere.

Cllr Ward said: “Since I was elected to the town council I hear of two main concerns for people the pool and the library.

“I understand this my be the biggest consultation undertaken

by South Glos with a good number from Filton.

“Now we want South Glos to listen to want has been said.

Certainly no one seems to be saying they prefer the green bin reduction to saving the library.

“We have been assured nothing can happen until September 2017.”

South Glos needs to makes savings and has suggested libraries could be affected: 1. If opening hours were reduced by 19% (90 hours) in the realm of the target of £500k could be achieved.

2. Satellite libraries (inc Filton) could be staffed and operated by the Council for two days (18 hours) per week. Local groups and volunteers could fund additional hours.

3. All libraries could be closed except identified main libraries.

These are currently proposed as Kingswood, Yate, Patchway, Thornbury and Bradley Stoke.

A South Glos spokesman said: “Significant savings are needed in the budgets for libraries and the amount the council spends on its buildings. The council is also looking to introduce a Community Hub model, where appropriate, to provide multiple services from single locations.

“The measures are part of the updated Council Savings Plan (CSP), approved as part of the 2016/17 council budget in February, which set out savings of an additional £22million from annual spending by 2019/20.

“Following the close of the consultation process, members will be presented with the findings from the public engagement to help them make their decisions.

“No decisions have been made on any of these matters, and won’t be until the council has heard from residents and councillors have had a chance to consider what they have to say.”

Hard work and talent pays off for Shield Road Primary pupil Katie as she accepts a place at the world-famous Royal Ballet School in London

By Rebecca Day It takes a great deal of talent to win a place at the Royal Ballet School in London.

And teeming with such brilliance is 10-year-old dance enthusiast Katie Robertson, who is one of just 12 young girls to outshine hundreds of other hopefuls.

She will be starting at the school – recognised as one of the world’s best – in September, where she will be studying fulltime, and returning to her family in Filton at weekends.

Katie, a Year 6 pupil at Shield Road Primary in Filton, took up dancing at the age of five after watching the hit Disney film High School Musical.

Proud mum Esther Robertson said: “Katie will hate me for saying it, but she absolutely loved High School Musical – she would always be dancing and spinning around in front of the TV when it was on.

“Then one day she asked if she could start ballet classes. We agreed and took her along to her first lesson at 344 Dance School in Fishponds, where she has remained since.”

Katie auditioned for a place at the Royal Ballet School – the setting for the award-winning film Billy Elliot – back in March.

A week later, Katie received the news she had been hoping for.

Esther said: “It was a wonderful surprise when we found out she was accepted.

“Katie was away on her Year

6 residential trip when the email came through, but her teacher let us speak to her. She was absolutely thrilled, and so excited.”

She added: “We decided to put her forward for a place at the Royal Ballet School because it was evident this is what she wants to do in life. When she’s not at her classes, she’s dancing at home – she just absolutely loves it.”

At the age of seven – just two years after taking up ballet – Katie was accepted onto the Royal Ballet School’s Junior Associates Programme, where she trains on a regular basis at one of the school’s centres in Radstock, Bath.

Since becoming an associate of the school, many opportunities have arisen for Katie including performing alongside prestigious threatre groups such as the Birmingham Royal Ballet and English Youth Ballet.

Last year, she was accepted on to the Royal Ballet School’s weeklong summer programme, where she had the chance to experience high levels of coaching, and meet Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell.

Earlier this year, Katie won her category in the national Imperial Classical Ballet Senior Awards in Crawley.

Katie is now undertaking her SATs exams, before she prepares to make the move to the Royal Ballet School’s White Lodge campus in September.

School days there typically consist of four hours of academic lessons, and two hours of ballet classes, with additional dance sessions in the afternoon.

Students are then reassessed each year to monitor their progress.

“We’re so pleased for Katie,” said Esther, “and as long as she keeps smiling then we’re happy for her to keep dancing.”

Popular takeaway celebrates 30 years in Filton as ‘chips off the old block’ Andreas and Spiros keep family traditions alive

O

n 24 April 2016, the family-owned Jolly Fryer celebrated its 30th anniversary of being in business at 557a Filton Avenue.

Kay and Stamatis Lomvardos opened the shop on Kay’s birthday back in 1986. Sons Nick and Andreas worked alongside mum and dad – Andreas part-time whilst still at school for a number of years. Nick left the family business 5 years ago to open the popular Bishopston Fish Bar whilst Andreas continued after leaving school and was joined by brother Spiros in 1999. Stamatis retired in the 90’s and the reins of the business were handed over to the two brothers who have run the popular business together for the past 5 years.

Before opening the Jolly Fryer, dad Stamatis worked in the Flipper (down at the Haymarket) and also helped to start up the Sun Valley takeaway next to the well-established restaurant of the same name on Gloucester Road. Two legendary establishments which people of a certain age will remember!

Andreas and Spiros recall the times when queues for the Jolly Fryer were outside the door and along the pavement – the Jolly Fryer was a favourite stop off for a fish and chip treat when people came back from shopping in town or other days out.

More recently the Bristol Post ran a competition for the best place in Bristol for fish and chips and the Jolly Fryer was awarded a place in the Top 3, along with the Bishopston Fish Bar run by brother Nick.

As the song goes “Two out of three ain’t bad”.

Andreas and Spiros have decided that it’s now time to reclaim some valuable family time outside of the business.

They would like to thank all their customers for their support over the years as they move on to something new in the next few months.

St Vallier player Omar delivers jerseys, shorts, socks and boots to pre-school children in African country

by Rebecca Day Children at a pre-school in The Gambia are benefitting from some new football kit donated by Filton’s St Vallier youth team.

Eight-year-old player Omar Saho, along with his dad Kalifa, hand-delivered the items, which included shirts, shorts and boots, to the pupils of Gunjur Kulukochi Community pre-school.

Kalifa, who moved from The Gambia to the UK in 2005, said: “Every child was so happy when they received the kit, and to thank us, they organised a football game, and presented us with a thankyou letter.

“It was a beneficial experience for Omar. I have always taught my son the importance of giving, and no matter how poor you are, there’s always someone worse off than you.”

It was Omar’s first time visiting the West African country, but Kalifa has spent many years raising funds for people in The Gambia with disabilities, and donating prosthetic limbs.

MoD commuters causing parking misery on roads - local resident

by Rebecca Day A Filton Avenue resident is pleading for action to end what he says has become a parking “nightmare” in his street.

In one incident, Paul Hookham says parking was once so bad, that he couldn’t move his car to take his 95-year-old mother to the doctor.

He believes that it is commuters from the MoD site, north of Filton, who are causing the problem.

Mr Hookham, who lives at the top end of Filton Avenue, near the former King George VI pub, said: “I got up one morning to take my mother to the doctors and my car was jammed in – to say I was fuming was an understatement.

“I phoned the police, and they told me to take the registration numbers over to the MoD. But when I got there, there was a massive queue, so I just went home and waited for the drivers to return.

“I confronted them, and they said that they worked at the MoD.” Mr Hookham says that Filton Avenue is also being used as a rat run by commuters, and regularly sees drivers exceeding the speed limit.

A spokesman from MOD Abbey Wood said: “Staff parking in residential areas around Abbey Wood should comply with all traffic management restrictions.

“We also regularly remind our staff and visitors that they should also act with consideration for local residents.

“We will continue to reiterate this message and continue to act on individual complaints that we receive.”

‘Too many patients causing road chaos’

by Rebecca Day Parking around Northville Family Practice has been branded “ridiculous” by a local resident.

Mike Alder, pictured right, who lives in Seventh Avenue, told Filtonvoice that it was once so bad an ambulance was unable to drive down the road. He also regularly sees dustbin lorries getting stuck, he says.

Mr Alder said: “It’s just absolutely ridiculous. I have had my wall knocked about three times, people are constantly parking in front of the lane.

“The other day, there were so many cars parked at the top of the road that cars couldn’t get past. People were blowing their horns – it was chaotic.

“I think it’s because Northville Surgery has too many patients.

When the doctors’ was extended, they said they wouldn’t increase

the number of patients, but now patients are coming in from all over the place.

“I just don't know what can be done – there’s nowhere a car park can be built.”

A spokesperson from the

surgery told Filtonvoice that they were unaware of any issues with parking.

They said: “Parking is quite good in the area, and we are certainly not oversubscribed.”

University gets new journey-sharing scheme on the road Students and staff at the University of the West of England are being encouraged to share their commute to cut congestion.

The university has launched a free journey-sharing website, joinmyjourney, to help people travelling to its Frenchay, Glenside, City and Gloucester campuses find others to travel with to cut single-occupancy car journeys, as well as reducing carbon emissions.

The map-based website launched in November for the 8,000 people who travel to the Aztec West business park every day and has been developed by ecosurety and received funding from South Gloucestershire Council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) and support from North Bristol SusCom. James Morvan, travel engagement project officer at UWE, said: “Travel accounts for a massive 49 per cent of our overall carbon emissions at UWE, with

the majority of this coming from commuter travel by staff and students. As one of the largest and most prominent employing organisations in Greater Bristol, we have an obligation to reduce the impact of our daily activities on the environment, residents and other businesses near our main campuses.”

Development helps study into car club benefits Cheswick Village has played a key role in research into how car clubs can benefit new developments, as part of a new study by the University of the West of England.

The report by Carplus, with UWE’s Centre for Transport and Society, looked at the last 10 years of experience of using car clubs across 10 developments.

Developer Redrow Homes, which built Cheswick Village, provided funding as well as a case study based on the estate.

The study looked at how car clubs could reduce parking requirements and improve the environment for residents in new developments and drew on input from developers, councils and car club operators.

It concludes that as well as benefiting residents who don’t own their own car, the schemes help reduce congestion, carbon emissions and improve air quality as well as freeing up

space that would otherwise be used for vehicle parking for extra amenities and communal space.

Robert Macdiarmid, group sustainability director for Redrow Homes, said: “Redrow welcomed the opportunity to contribute to this report, which will be a valuable resource for those involved in planning new developments.

“It assists in the sharing of best practice, helps developers to identify where car clubs will be viable and also highlights potential pitfalls to avoid.

“We’re planning to use the information collated in the report for briefing sessions for our technical directors, to help them better understand the underlying conditions necessary to enable car clubs to thrive on our developments.”

Year-long closure plan to go ahead

Plans to close a vital commuter link to Bristol’s north fringe for a year will go ahead despite protests. The contractor building the £200m MetroBus network proposes to shut Stoke Lane to northbound traffic from the Frenchay Park Road junction for 12 months from May 22, 2016.

The contractor, Alun Griffiths, says making the road one-way for 12 months will reduce the time needed to complete the works overall by 37 weeks.

Residents have mobilised opposition to the closure, setting up the Stoke Lane Action Group on Facebook. Public dropin events will be held by the contractor on May 16, 1.30-3pm at UWE in the foyer by the library, on May 17, 5.30-7.30pm at Stapleton and Begbrook Community Centre, and May 19, 4-6pm at Frenchay Village Hall.

Anyone for hockey? Local ladies’ club on lookout for new players

by Rebecca Day The BAC ladies hockey team – which used to be affiliated to the British Aircraft Corporation – is looking for players of all abilities, but seeking a goalkeeper in particular.

The club has a first and second team who play in the North Division and the Berkeley Two league respectively.

BAC trains every Tuesday at Abbeywood Community School, 7-8pm, with matches held on Saturdays.

The summer league runs from May to August, and the winter league runs from September to March, providing plenty of games throughout the year.

First team captain Rachael Oliver said: “We are a small club, running just two teams, starting to struggle to survive with no funding and few new players coming through.

“We are currently looking for new players, especially a goalkeeper, to help keep this fantastic club running and involved in the hockey league and local community.

“We have players of mixed abilities at BAC, from people who have been playing for 40 years, to some who haven’t played since school, so anyone is welcome to join.

“Besides training and playing matches, we are also a really social bunch – we do beer and quiz nights, colour fun runs, bowling, bubble football and roller discos.

“We have also teamed up with Stapleton Cricket Club who let us use their clubhouse for social events.”

Two community groups soar into top 10, winning £500 Airbus prize Two community groups from Filton have scooped £500 each towards their activities in a competition open to charities and voluntary organisations across the Bristol area.

Friends of Charborough Road School and community charity FACE were both among 10 groups to receive a prize in the Airbus Community Awards last month.

The groups were asked to collect tokens from the Bristol Post newspaper, with the 10 groups that collected the most winning a share of £10,000 – £3,500 for the winner, £2,000 for second place, £1,000 for third place and £500 each for seven runners-up.

Out of the 50 groups that entered the awards, FACE

came fourth, narrowly missing out on the £1,000 third-place prize, while the Friends of Charborough Road School came ninth.

FACE runs a range of activities and services for young Filton residents, including youth clubs, dance workshops, one-to-one support, trips and partnerships with local schools.

It also runs a Silver Surfers group, work club, community learning courses and more.

The prize money will be used to support its summer programmes.

The £500 awarded to the Friends of Charborough Road School will go towards to the school’s fundraising total for new classroom tablets, LearnPads.

Homes are ‘selling quickly’ at airfield

A developer says the first homes it has built at Charlton Hayes, on the former Filton Airfield site, have sold in quick succession.

Bellway Homes is building 120 homes off Hayes Way, including one and two-bedroom apartments and two, three and four-bedroom houses.

Recruitment day really works for SGS students

Keith picks up the baton as band founder Chris retires Concord Band is happy to announce that they have obtained the services of Keith Williams to tutor and conduct. Keith, right, replaces Chris Harris who is now retired after 30 years since he founded the band in 1986.

Mr Williams, as his expupils will know him, has been instructing since the age of sixteen when he was in charge of a boys’ brass group.

Since those days he has been a peripatetic music teacher from 1990 to 2000 and taught wind and brass in Bristol and the surrounding area.

He has been Head of Brass at The John Cabot Technology College and at the Colston’s Collegiate School.

Many of his students in the local area will remember him from the Schools Brass and Wind Band and the Sunday Night Music Centre, both of which he founded.

During this period he also found time to be a bandmaster for fourteen years and to give private lessons on wind and keyboards to children and adults.

A group of ambitious students at Filtonbased South Gloucestershire and Stroud College were put through their paces by an international recruitment organisation as part of an initiative to help them gain employment after they leave further education.

Bristol-based RSG, an independent recruiter that employs around 180 people in the region, sent 15 consultants to contribute to the Employability Training Programme at the Filton Campus.

Forty students aged between 17-18 attended the RSG-led Employability Day and alongside learning basics such as CV writing and interview skills, they also experienced specific challenges.

This included putting reasoning, objection handling and team work to the test as groups took on the challenge of

discussing customer service in worldwide brands.

The objective was to teach the students the skills they need for achieving employment outside of education and help them fulfil their potential.

Sam Honeywill, IT Lecturer and Course Leader at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, said: “We chose RSG due to its outstanding reputation, particularly in technology recruitment.

“They also have a great track record in helping FE students in learning about the world of work – and helping them learn skills to land a job they really want.

“The students really value being in contact with this realworld expertise and this group particularly enjoyed going through a formal interview situation as they received helpful feedback about their performance.”

RSG Director Adam Meadows said: “We were very impressed with the students’ enthusiasm and drive to understand more about how to handle the potentially stressful experience of getting a job for the very first time.”

Councillors may be given powers to allocate former grant cash Filton’s South Glos councillors could be given financial allocations to award to local groups - replacing grants awarded through the local area committee scheme.

South Glos is now inviting the public to comment on the scheme which could see councillors with around £4,000 each to hand out.

Currently Filton has three Labour councillors, Roger Hutchinson, Ian Scott and Adam Monk.

Under the proposals, councillors could allocate funds to one organisation or several, but there would be a minimum payout of £500 per organisation.

Total funding of £280,000 could be available to South Glos’s 70 councillors from 2016/17.

A spokesman said: “South

Gloucestershire Council has previously awarded grants through its Local Area Committees to voluntary groups, charities and Town & Parish Councils in the form of community grants. In February, the Council agreed to replace community grants in this form with a scheme of Member Awarded Funding.

“This consultation enables affected groups and organisations to influence the way in which this new scheme will operate.

“It is essential to ensure that this new scheme meets the Council’s legal obligations, and that it provides transparency and clarity for local groups. The scheme also needs to safeguard public funding in a proportionate manner.

“These factors have been taken into account in developing the proposals contained in this consultation.”

Among the proposals are: l All South Gloucestershire Councillors will be allocated an equal amount of Member Awarded Funding annually dependent on budget provision. l Some £280,000 could be available in 2016/17 though there is no guarantee that the same (or any) budget provision will be available in subsequent years. l Members will have the option of individually awarding all their annual funding to a single organisation / purpose, or dividing it amongst a number of agencies though there will be a minimum level of £500. l Members will be able to

After an enjoyable visit to Batsford Arboretum last October to see the autumn colours, members of Filton Garden Club decided to visit again in the spring, writes chairman Ken George.

A total of 43 members and friends set off from Filton on Wednesday, April 13, to spend a most enjoyable day in the Cotswolds. We journeyed up the M5 and cut across to Moretonin-Marsh through countryside just starting to show green leaves. On arrival we were greeted by a young lady who gave a short introductory talk.

At first I was a little disappointed at the lack of bluebells in bloom, which due to the unusual winter weather pattern are very late this year.

But the primroses, daffodils, narcissi, magnolia and cherry trees fully compensated. The

Sometimes viruses make themselves look like legitimate programs.

If you are sure that it is actually Java or Adobe prompting you then it is probably a good idea as they often fix security issues with their program. How can you be sure? You can run the program separately or sometimes check the icon in control panels and update from there rather than relying on the pop-up.

Adobe Flash is another program which regularly needs updates. This is a program that helps you watch videos through your browser. Recent critical

updates have fixed versions that could allow a malicious website to take over your PC! So generally we feel Adobe Flash updates are sensible precautions.

For those people with Windows Vista (or even XP) who use Google Chrome you will have seen a notice that Google will no longer be updating their software so it will become increasingly open to threats.

You will need to consider moving to a new supported browser when this happens.

This will start to happen more and more to programs on older versions of Windows.

Vista is going the way of XP next year. This means that Microsoft will no longer release patches for security issues in its

system. Windows 7 still has four years of updates from now until it is no longer supported.

So, of course, if you have Windows 7 or 8, should you upgrade to Windows 10? We don’t have space to cover this now but we will be giving you a guide in the next few issues as the free upgrade period is coming to an end.

Celebrations for woodlands team Volunteers at a local woodland have plenty of reasons to celebrate as summer approaches.

Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group has made great strides over the past year in its work to transform the woodland during regular workdays involving UWE GreenSpace student volunteers.

The group has also become fully independent after initially having close ties to the council, while one long-term volunteer has had his efforts recognised in the Chair of South Gloucestershire Council’s Community Awards.

Treasurer and vicechairman Fred Hillberg has been volunteering with the conservation group since 2003 as a committee member as well as rolling up his sleeves on workdays, a contribution his fellow members describe as “invaluable”.

Fred said: “This award has come as a complete surprise and I am delighted to accept on behalf of all the Splatts Abbey Conservation Group, past and present. I have thoroughly

enjoyed my time with the group and hope it has made a contribution to the community and the environment.”

Splatts Abbey Wood Conservation Group and its sister woodland, Sims Hill Community Woodland, have both forged strong links with the University of the West of England, benefiting from the help of student volunteers.

Jenny Idle, project officer at UWE Volunteering, said:

“The students really value their experience of volunteering with local conservation groups. This year they have far surpassed our expectations and committed hundreds of hours to the project.

We are also very proud of two of our project leaders who have recently been awarded Green Volunteers Awards for their work and look forward to building on this success in the next academic year.”

Both woodland groups welcome community involvement and are keen to expand their group of volunteers to develop the woodlands further.

Former surgeon is back in the saddle to cycle length of Britain A retired Bristol orthopaedic surgeon is to cycle more than 1,000 miles from one end of Great Britain to the other to raise money in aid of local hospital care.

Alan Gibson, 70, of Westburyon-Trym is setting off from the end of Cornwall to the tip of Scotland on May 21, retracing a route he first cycled when he was 16.

Alan, who worked at Southmead Hospital from 1973 until 2013, says the ride took him three weeks when he was a teenager.

He added: “It might take me a bit longer this time, but I’m aiming to cycle 50 miles a day, taking the more picturesque routes.

“I’ve had a few offers of company from friends and relatives but on most days I’ll

Money raised through sponsorship will go to Southmead Hospital Charity’s Guy Jordan Fund, which supports theatres, the emergency department and intensive care

unit at the hospital. The fund was set up in memory of Dr Guy Jordan, a consultant in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine at Southmead. Guy was an experienced cyclist who was sadly killed in a collision with an oil tanker in November 2013.

Guy’s brother Ben Jordan said: “The long-term aim of the fund is to make a real impact on emergency and critical care services.

“We want to fund the purchase of state-of-the art training equipment, advanced medical kit and additional patient services. Alan is taking on an amazing challenge for us and we’re very grateful for his support.”

Alan has first-hand experience of the work carried out by trauma medical teams after he had a para-motoring accident and sustained a fracture-dislocation of his neck.

‘I’ll keep politics out of policing’ Sue Mountstevens has been reelected as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset.

Independent candidate Ms Mounstevens was declared the winner following the results of the first and second stage vote on May 6.

Across the force area, one in four people eligible to vote did so, resulting in a turnout of 26.64 per cent, more than five per cent higher than in 2012.

Ms Mountstevens said: “Thank you to the residents of Avon and Somerset who once again chose me as your Police and Crime Commissioner, we will keep politics out of policing for another four years.

“Together with Chief Constable Andy Marsh we will fight crime, prevent crime and work with all our communities to continue to make Avon and Somerset a safe place to live and work.

“I will be the voice of residents and victims and continue to do all I can to tackle and prevent crimes against the most vulnerable in society particularly child sexual exploitation and abuse.”

Seven candidates campaigned for the top job and at the first count, Sue Mountstevens won 82,708 votes. Labour’s Kerry Barker won 75,538 votes.

In the second count, Ms Mountstevens had 35,839 votes, giving her a grand total of 118,547 and Kerry Barker had 25,027 votes, giving him a total of 100,565.

by Rebecca Day A local amateur radio club is encouraging the Filton community to find out more about the classic form of communication.

North Bristol Amateur Radio Club (NBARC) – located at the SHE7 building in Braemar Avenue – was founded in 1977 and now has over 50 members of all ages and backgrounds.

Members meet every Friday evening where they get chance to enjoy guest speakers, tech-talks, and discussions, as well as make radio contacts across the world.

Pursued as both a hobby and service, amateur – or “ham” – radio is used for noncommercial message exchanges, scientific research, self-training, recreational purposes, public services, and in the event of a natural disaster or crisis.

It has also recently made headlines when British astronaut Tim Peake used a device on board the International Space Station to communicate with schoolchildren across the country.

NBARC, which is affiliated with the Radio Society of Great Britain, provides local training and examinations for all members of the public who wish to gain an amateur radio licence.

The club gets involved in a number of events throughout the year, including the Bristol Docks Run, the West of England Rally and the Bitton Railway Open Day. NBARC will also be making an appearance at the

Vada, 18, achieves his Team GB dream An eighteen-year-old student has returned from China with a bronze medal for Team GB after competing at the 2016 Acrobatic World Championships.

Vada Finniear, who is studying A levels at SGS College and trains with Harriers Acrobatic Gymnastics Club at Patchway Sports Centre, competed in the mixed pairs category with partner Kennedi Cross, both pictured right.

With the top eight earning a place in the finals in the qualifications round, Vada and Kennedi came a nail-biting seventh.

Vada explained: “Our first routine wasn’t our best so we were worryingly placed seventh, but after calming down a bit our second routine placed first, so we qualified overall in fifth for the finals.”

In the final round they came third behind Russia and America, in second and first respectively, claiming bronze for Great Britain.

Vada said: “The competition was so exciting, and we never imagined we would get a medal, so that made the competition even more memorable!

“It can be difficult to juggle

Year 8 students from Orchard School joined a writers’ retreat in Devon, working with professional authors and poets

Young writers get creative in countryside at retreat Thirteen lucky Year 8 students from Orchard School attended a residential writing course. The week-long course was held in Totleigh Barton, Devon, and run by the Arvon Foundation.

The students worked with professional authors and poets – Christopher William Hill, Karen

McCarthy and CJ Flood – to develop their own creative pieces which they showcased on the final evening.

Arvon runs a programme of residential creative writing courses and retreats for schools, groups and individuals. The fiveday courses, tutored by leading

authors, are held at three rural writers’ houses and include a mix of workshops and individual tutorials, with time and space to write free from the distractions of everyday life. The courses are in a wide range of genres, including fiction, poetry, screenwriting and playwriting.

Local people seeking to improve their spoken English have been chatting away at Orchard School's fun and friendly new Conversation Club.

Run in conjunction with Bristol City Council, those attending are able to practise speaking English with a series of fun activities, meet new people and improve their confidence.

(And everyone gets a nice cuppa!)

Members are still keen to meet new people and anyone interested can come along and give it a try.

The sessions are held on Wednesdays, 4.30-5.30pm, in the library at Orchard School.

Primary in talks to link up with Olympus trust

Filton Hill Primary could become part of The Olympus Academy Trust (OAT), which runs Abbeywood Community School and Charborough Road Primary, along with Bradley Stoke Community School and Meadowbrook Primary School.

The trust’s board of directors say they are considering next steps with ‘an emphasis on working within local communities and creating greater economies of scale to support learning in our schools’.

This means they want to grow beyond the current four member schools, leading to a change in trust leadership.

The plans came amid coverage government announcements that all schools must become academies by 2022, although those plans are no in some doubt.

In a letter to staff and parents, trust executive head Dave

Baker, pictured, said: “This has provoked a strong reaction across the education community and has implications for organisations such as ours.

“If all schools were to become academies, there will need to be more multi-academy trusts and many of those already in place will need to grow. Following a board meeting on the last evening of last term, the time has now come to share plans for the next few months.

“The Board of Directors agreed to the following plan of

action, based on requests from the following schools to join OAT: l To conduct due diligence with a view to Filton Hill Primary School joining OAT l To enable Patchway Community College (already an academy) to join OAT, subject to appropriate financial support from the Department for Education l To conduct due diligence with a view to Stoke Lodge Primary School and Callicroft Primary School (already academies within the Cosmos Academy Trust) joining OAT. The Cosmos Academy Trust would cease to exist as a multi-academy trust.

“All of these schools are located in the local partnership area and Patchway is a key partner in the Concorde Partnership which provides shared post 16 and some Key Stage 4 courses.”

Filton Hill head teacher Kirsten Lemming said: “We are in the process of considering whether becoming an academy is right for us and we are in discussion with potential partners, including local Academy Trusts.

“We have had several meetings with the Olympus Academy Trust (OAT), as we firmly believe a local solution is best for the school.

“The majority of our pupils already transfer to Abbeywood and we have a close working relationship with all the schools within the trust. Our priority remains making sure we provide the best possible education for all our pupils.”

The earliest any of these schools could join OAT would be September 2016 and the aim would be to complete the transfer for all of them by the start of 2017 unless there were unforeseen difficulties.

Mr Baker added: “It is important to say that the decision about whether any or all of these proposals can proceed ultimately lies with the Regional Schools Commissioner for the SouthWest.

“A new commissioner, Rebecca Clark, starts in post at the beginning of May and we will be discussing our plans with her at the earliest opportunity.”

Academy’s Cadet forces shines as rear admiral praises students

One of the most senior figures in the Royal Navy was in Bristol for the official launch of Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy’s Combined Cadet Force.

Rear Admiral John Clink, Flag Officer Sea Training, was accompanied by a Corps of Drums from Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Band plus other naval officers, staff, pupils and parents, for the cadets’ official inauguration parade at the academy near Filton.

BTE Academy, which opened in September 2013, is one of six University Technical Colleges already affiliated to the Royal Navy.

The CCF already has a contingent of 30 cadets supported by three adult volunteers drawn from the academy staff, who have undertaken the initial officer training course at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

“We are very proud to be launching one of the very few school cadet forces outside the independent sector in this region,” said Rhian Priest, Principal at BTE Academy.

“The Royal Navy is committed to the enduring success of the UTC concept by providing access to world class facilities and technical expertise to enrich the development of UTC students to generate the technicians and graduates of tomorrow.

“The Royal Navy has been one of our sponsor organisations

from day one and our RN Cadet Section will further cement these links.”

Rear Admiral Clink said: “I have had a brilliant day seeing BTE Academy’s CCF come to life.

Men in Sheds in Filton is extending its hours to meet demand.

The DIY group, which aims to tackle loneliness and isolation among men aged over 50, operates from the Scout hut in Nuffield Grove, providing a space to socialise, build, share skills and drink tea.

Men in Sheds Filton is part of a national movement, initiated by Age Concern Cheshire in 2009 and sustained by the UK Men’s Sheds Association. There are now over 200 “sheds” across the country, with many more being developed. The group runs every Wednesday, from 9.30am12.30pm.

The pace of his rehearsals are gauged to suit of people who wish to progress. The biscuits are equal in quality to those of Westerly Showband; in fact they come out of the same tin!
