Those who have regularly relied on Haston Hobbs to dispense their prescriptions at his shop in Filton Avenue will sadly miss his familiar presence, writes Doug Daniels. “Take two spoonfuls three times daily,” may have been written thousands of times by Haston. Now it will be written by someone else.

“Some customers have had tears in their eyes on hearing Haston was leaving.” Lynn Evans

A ‘sad loss’ as pharmacy shuts after 78 years by Rebecca Day A much-loved Filton pharmacy is closing after serving the community for almost 80 years. Those who have regularly relied on Haston Hobbs to dispense their prescriptions at his shop in Filton Avenue say they will miss his presence. Customers have been expressing their sadness on the Filton News and Views Facebook page, with PCSO Sheryl Drewitt saying it will be a “sad loss to Filton”. Assistant Lynn Evans, who has served alongside Mr Hobbs for 15 years, said: “Some customers have had tears in their eyes on hearing Haston was leaving.” Mr Hobbs took over the business from his father, which was established in 1936. He said: “I owed it to his memory to continue it in the original family name.” Hobbs was bought out by another local pharmacy nine months ago. Hayfield, which has been

operating on Filton Avenue for two years, has taken on one member of staff from Hobbs. Owner Isac Muller said: “We’re an independent pharmacy fighting against the odds, and we’re trying to make a go of things in a difficult time. “It’s still early days, and we're keeping our heads above the water. “We’re very progressive in our way, through offering a variety of services and just keeping up the pace.” He added: “We’ve been through the redundancy programme and considered who was suitable to carry on – Mr Hobbs is welcome to join us.” Mr Hobbs is taking April and May off work to consider his options.

News ‘Let’s not allow rentals to make Filton a slum’

Filton will become a ‘slum area’ if the problem of irresponsible landlords is not sorted out, the town council heard. Councillors discussed the issue after resident Brian Smith said ward councillors should investigate owners of properties which were not kept to a reasonable standard. The same meeting heard that the recent town council survey, which asked questions about ‘houses of multiple occupation’ (HMOs), found residents who responded were split roughly 50/50 over whether they had an issue with such properties. However there was less enthusiasm for a counciltax funded survey aimed at identifying the extent of the problem. Just 37 per cent of respondents backed the survey, which was estimated at costing £30,000. Mr Smith, a resident in Northville ward, said: “I would like the councillors for Northville to find the landlords then send a letter saying that their gardens

should be kept in a reasonable condition. I don’t want our community turned into a slum area.” The meeting heard from other residents who said the gardens and surrounding areas of many rental properties were left untidy, with three-piece suites in gardens and rubbish left on the street. Councillor Keith Briffett, who represents Conygre, said: “I endorse what Mr Smith has said it is a common problem. “I have written to our MP Jack Lopresti asking him who is responsible and I want legislation which would make all residents in rental properties pay council tax. “Students should get three warnings or be chucked out.” Other residents said students should not be seen as the sole cause of the problem. Sean Walsh said: “The problem is with people who are transient and who do not have a stake in our community.” However Dave Mikkelson said: “The student situation is a real problem and it will get

worse. I call on the council to fund this survey and then get to grips with the situation.” He said HMOs in his locality were causing “horrendous” parking problems with multiple vehicles associated with individual properties. Councillors said that while they recognised and understood the problem, there was little they could do with the powers they have. It was suggested that a mailshot could go out across

the town urging residents and landlords to be more responsible. In other responses to the town council survey, a majority of residents (60-47) said they were not concerned with street lights being off at night. Respondents also rejected (67-40) the town council funding South Glos services which are set to stop or be reduced. Those who did want services being bought back favoured grass cutting as the most popular.

Fitting send-off for musician Jim The sounds of brass rang round Canford Crematorium as one of Filton’s most inspiring characters was laid to rest. More than 200 people attended the funeral of Jim Scott, a man who had brass bands in

his blood having played cornet almost all of his life as well as forming the successful Filton Concert Brass. Jim died last month aged 74 just days after ‘his’ band had secured promotion to brass

band’s elite competition group. His funeral, appropriately, was an occasion with brass music to the fore. A one-off ensemble of musicians past and present - some coming from as far as Manchester and Essex - played hymns as the congregation arrived while a smaller ensemble played during the service. Jim’s close friend Ken Brock, who had known him since they were young boys, said the occasion was like an old band reunion, which would have pleased Jim. He said: “He was such a character, a good teacher and there was always a lot of laughter. “So many people have had a lifetime in music because of the start given to them by Jim - some have gone on to be married to each other. It’s like a big family. “I knew Jim from when we

were boys and we got to know each other through music. “The funeral was remarkable - I’ve never seen so many people and there were grown men crying.” Jim began playing cornet at Greenway School in Southmead before playing in several local bands. He moved on to the Stanshawe Band in Yate before deciding to start the Filton Concert Brass. Mr Brock said Jim would train youngsters from scratch, many of whom would go on to achieve great success in music. The band built steadily over the years and in recent times achieved national recognition, culminating in winning the South West Regional 1st Section contest in Torquay last month. Jim, a trained shipyard welder who never married, died after a period of illness.

by Rebecca Day The regeneration of Filton Park shops has received a positive response from local shop owners. Gloucester Road North’s Texaco garage has now been demolished, and it is understood that in its place will be four to five units, including a supermarket and a coffee shop. Filtonvoice has been informed that this could potentially be a Morrisons Local, and a Starbucks. It is also understood that the supermarket chain previously applied for an alcohol licence at the former Motaman store, but the building remains vacant – as does the former Blockbuster next door. A pizza delivery service, which has received approval from South Gloucestershire Council and Filton Town Council, is also to potentially open at Associated Windows.

The building would be divided to accommodate two stores – but manager Bill MacDonald has confirmed there is “nothing yet set in stone”. Mr MacDonald, who has worked at the store for 19 years, said: “The more shops in the area, the better – anything that brings people here is surely a good thing, and it can’t do Filton any harm. “I think the area could do with a regeneration – it’s been very down-trodden. Plus, new shops will be good for creating jobs, and benefitting local businesses.” Work is also under way to redevelop the former school uniform shop into a general store, Eden, which will open from 6am to 9pm. Manicks – an Indian and Thai restaurant which recently opened – has also been warmly received in Filton. Mario Parinello, owner of The

News Circus thrills as Filton’s new retail The recently refurbished Abbey Wood Shopping Park in Filton officially launched last month with a spectacular opening event featuring colourful acts by Bristol-based showmakers and circus connoisseurs Cirque Bijou. Most units are now occupied and around 400 new jobs have been created on the site. One established business owner said trade has improved markedly since the development phase and more jobs have been developed. Mike Guerin, owner of the McDonald’s restaurant, said: “We have had around a 20% upswing compared to the period of development, we are now open 24 hours, we are investing more and we have taken on 35 more staff. “We are delighted with the 24-hour opening which has gone very smoothly.” The retail park opening event

got under way with an exciting show of theatrical stunts, aerial acrobatics and live music which concluded with the Chair of South Gloucestershire Council,

Cllr Ian Boulton revealing the new Abbey Wood Shopping Park logo. He was joined by Filton Town Council chairman Darryl Collins

for an impromptu dance to the bhangra music. Cllr Collins said: “The 400 new jobs at the park is excellent news.”

News park is officially opened

There was also a private reception for more than 50 guests from local businesses and stakeholder groups. The new look retail park,

which has undergone a £10 million refurbishment and extension, is now home to national brands Asda, Costa Coffee, B&M, Sporting Pro,

Frankie & Benny’s, Nando’s, Matalan, Pets at Home, Brantano, Next Clearance, Subway and McDonalds. The scheme provides over 600 jobs for the local area and 400 have been newly created as a direct result of the redevelopment of the shopping park. The first collection of new stores opened last autumn and the line-up of new brands was completed in February as B&M and Subway opened their doors. The existing and new retailers are already reporting sales well over budgeted expectations thanks to increased footfall at the site, which is now virtually fully let. Ian Cody, Asset Manager, Hermes Real Estate Investment Management Limited (HREIML), commented: “We are delighted that the new Abbey Wood Shopping Park is already

70p

providing a much-needed new destination shopping area to the people of Filton as well as a strong source of employment.” A new pedestrian footbridge has been created to the rear of the new Frankie & Benny’s to improve the access from Filton Abbey Wood Station and the Ministry of Defence’s Abbey Wood site. In addition, bike racks have been installed for cyclists using the surrounding foot and cycle paths that link the site to Bristol Parkway Stations, the Ministry of Defence and UWE’s Frenchay campus. The only part of the development not already let is the first floor area, above the public piazza which will create a central point for the community and has been named “The Hub”. The owners are keen to see it occupied by a doctor’s surgery, healthcare centre, library or post office.

A Filton optician business will open on Sundays after a big upswing in business meant they have been running at full capacity. Specsavers on Church View has also taken on three new staff to help cope with the demand. Acting joint venture partner Sarah McGowan, who took over in Filton in February, said the practice was booked out for around a week in advance and that they needed to make better use of their test room. Opening hours will now be extended on Saturdays to 5.30pm as well as 10-4pm on Sundays. Sarah said: “We are usually booked out a week in advance and we didn’t want people to miss out. “We are also offering two slots every day which we hold open and, as in GP surgeries, residents can call at 9am to try to book one of these appointments. .” Filton Specsavers offers a number of services other than glasses and sight tests, including contact lenses.

Green light for ,100 new homes 1 Outline planning permission has been granted for the first of three major housing developments that will make up the Cribbs/ Patchway New Neighbourhood near Filton. The scheme by Persimmon Homes and Ashfield Land will see the construction of up to 1,100 homes on the 133-acre site at Fishpool Hill. A new local centre, primary school, leisure and community facilities and transport infrastructure will also be delivered as part of the scheme. Chair of the council’s development control (west) committee Councillor Dave Hockey said: “This is a landmark decision and a significant step forward for the Cribbs/Patchway New Neighbourhood. “In time this scheme will form part of a major new self-

contained community within South Gloucestershire providing many of the new homes, jobs and infrastructure we will need in the coming years.” He added that a residents’ liaison group would be set up before construction began to discuss issues relating to the development. The Cribbs/Patchway New Neighbourhood will see the creation of approximately 5,700 homes, 123 acres of employment land, new open spaces, schools and community facilities over the next 15 years. The two other major schemes within the development – one to the north of the A4018 Cribbs Causeway, and the other on the site of the former airfield at Filton – are expected to be considered by the committee in the coming months.

MP takes a flight in new A400M Filton’s MP has experienced a flight on Airbus’s Atlas A400M, months before it enters service later this year as the RAF replaces its C-130 Hercules fleet with the new aircraft. The Ministry of Defence is purchasing 22 A400M Atlas transport aircraft, significant elements for which are made in Filton. MP Jack Lopresti visited RAF Brize Norton with members of

the House of Commons Defence Select Committee for the briefing in March. He said: “It was impressive to see the aircraft at first hand, and have a chance to fly in it, having seen its development and construction locally. “It will bring a step change in capability to the RAF’s air transport fleet. I was particularly impressed by how little noise such a large aircraft makes.”

Confused over Labour’s leaflet

Do Filton Labour councillors think we have such short memories? Their spring 2014 flyer really is full of holes. Firstly the three councillors Roger Hutchinson, Adam Monk and Ian Scott all now want to make sure the airfield development happens properly. We thought they were opposed to developing the airfield at all costs, now suddenly they are all on board to ride off the back of the sale of the land! Very

I remember very all three councillors pictured protesting no development or sell-off over their political bodies! I have a picture somewhere from this magazine. Secondly, Mr Hutchinson is pictured with a green recycle bin conveying “savage cuts” by local government. May I remind him that the Labour parish councillors and others have just put up council tax charges for his Filton constituency! Perhaps we could all do with our Filton precept being diverted to pay to continue valuable services like recycling collections instead of funding loss-making facilities

in Filton? Serious financial short comings by the parish council could be faced and all three councillors seemed to sit back and allow this to continue without any comment whatsoever by keeping a large political distance. Those in glass houses? The leaflet talks about cost savings. South Gloucestershire council have frozen council tax and yet Labours’ Filton parish council up their charges! Why? I hope for all our sakes the UKIP councillors put into action capping town councils legally, so that it’s not a licence to print money.

I am sure UKIP will give a strong opposition to Labour, whose outdated views no longer fit with the make up of our town. I for one cannot wait for the next local elections. Those who have forgotten what Labour have done in Filton will be strongly reminded. Pleased to see UKIP taking hold in Filton. Labour councillors, if you are really serious about saving Filton taxpayers money then can I suggest we don’t need three who all accept annual expenses, when the flyer states you all say the same thing? It would be refreshing to see that you all had your own opinions? Surely one

councillor can say all this? What do we get for our money, simply one opinion from three people? On a final note, can I point out the grammatical error in the flyer as it should read Adam, Ian and Roger as it’s usual practice to place these in alphabetical order. I don’t understand why the name Roger keeps being referred to first but it is incorrect. Norman (Eames) Gloucester Road North, Filton

Our aircraft links with Europe

My attention has been drawn to a contribution in St Peter’s Church, Filton News Sheet provided by the Rector, Rev Canon Brian Arman (Church of England). He describes a previous relationship between the former Bristol Aeroplane Company (now BAe) and a German Aeroplane Company – the Halberestadter Flugzeugwerke. It was named the Flugzeuggesellschaft mbh and based at Halberstadt. It was a joint British-German collaboration way back in 1912. Just prior to the Great War in

filtonvoice

1914 when the relationship was disbanded. It is interesting to recall this relationship in the light of Filton’s current involvement with Airbus. I sensed there is a hand of friendship extended to the inhabitants of that far away town. I wonder if they, too, recall that relationship involving their ancestors so many years ago. Filton currently twinned with the German town of Witzenhausen and St Vallier (France) formed their relationships through an attachment to the aircraft industry. What was once bitter adversaries are now collaborators in a world renowned industry. The years of estrangement long since gone. Doug Daniels

European Union costs us a fortune

In the early Spring of 1941, in the middle of an air raid, a butcher’s van made its way to the hospital where I was about to be born, into a world where tyranny raged all across occupied Europe. Puppet governments were set

www.filtonvoice.co.uk

up to control the population, who had to obey and do as instructed. They were powerless. The EU initially started out as a trade agreement. They now make 75 per cent of our laws and the EU’s ultimate aim is to creat the Federation of the United States of Europe. The final nail in our democratic coffin, and like the puppet governments of our yesterdays, our leaders will be powerless, required only to follow the rules and regulations instructed by Brussels. Nonsensical debates take place in Parliament today because, with increasing frequency they have no p0wer to act on behalf of the electorate or what is in the best interests of our country. Nothing will change while we remain in the EU, an unelected bureaucratic body to whom we pay £55 million a day. Money is much needed here, we MUST put our own people first. We face more cuts and our roads, public buildings and our rivers have faced extreme neglect. Police cutbacks, fire services and yet again, our armed forces - who are now dangerously low in the event of a national threat - they have all seen cuts. Our standard of living has fallen and we have less money to spend. Food banks have shot up all over the country and the indigenous population has to compete for jobs with newcomers, while EU red tape costs UK firms £6bn a year. Uncontrolled immigration is unsustainable and our infrastructure is at breaking point. We must control our own

Extra hour of street lighting in Filton backed until 01.00 and then 05.00 until dawn. Exceptions to these criteria are considered where it is deemed that all-night lighting will significantly mitigate against night-time crime or anti-social behaviour; where street lighting is mandatory or considered essential; or where it is deemed that all-night will maintain road safety where street lighting is considered essential. Approximately one-third of South Gloucestershire’s 30,000 street lights remain lit throughout the night, while the remainder operate on part-night hours. The changes to the policy’s standard hours aim to support South Gloucestershire’s night-time economies and aid

night-time travelling and will be introduced during the coming year. The scheme was brought in to reduce costs as well as energy. Residents in Filton have previously expressed worry that the scheme causes problems for shift workers and may raise fear of crime among the elderly. However some reports say crime is not affected and a number of residents say they think it leads to a better night’s sleep. Cllr Roger Hutchinson said: “This was a as a result of the Labour Group putting forward an allocation of funding in this years council budget to keep the lights on for an hour longer as recognition of the concern expressed by residents, mainly in the urban areas.”

Hopes for a new metro rail station in Filton took a step forward with the publication of a new independent study. The report by consultants CH2M Hill was commissioned by South Gloucestershire Council and will inform the business case for the West of England authorities’ MetroWest Phase 2 rail scheme, which foresees hourly services on a reopened Henbury Line. New rail services on the Henbury Line depend ‘four-tracking’ Filton Bank which was approved earlier this month by central government. The report also considers potential station sites for the reopened Henbury Line, focusing on six possible locations between the former station at Filton North and Henbury.

Residents in Filton who have expressed concern about the town’s street lights being turned off at night will be given an extra hour of illumination. Changes to South Gloucestershire’s ‘partnight’ street lighting policy were approved by members of the council’s Planning, Transportation & Strategic Environment Committee when they met in Filton. Under the proposals, lights in urban areas that are included within the district’s ‘part-night’ lighting scheme will remain lit for an extra hour from midnight to 1am. As set out in the amended South Gloucestershire Council Street Lighting Policy 2014, the standard hours of illumination for street lighting will be dusk

Petition launched over £36 green bin charge

By Rebecca Day Debate has erupted over the recent launch of the South Glos’s optional garden waste collection service, which charges residents £36 per year. The Conservative group on the council says they should not be taking more money out of people’s pockets, while Labour say the charge was the “least worse option” available and better than cutting other services. Conservative MP for Kingswood Chris Skidmore set up a petition to protest the “bin tax” which was voted through by Labour and Liberal Democrats. Mr Skidmore said: “We are fighting for hard-working local people who have already paid their council tax to have basic services such as waste collected.

“At a time when the council manages to have an underspend of £4.5 million last year, Labour’s councillors remain unapologetic for introducing this charge and will not stand up for local residents.” However Filton Labour councillor Roger Hutchinson, said: “The issue of charging was discussed over a long period by the Communities Committee, which ended very reluctantly with two groups acknowledging that the charge was the least worse option available. “None of us want to make decisions like this - we’re all facing cuts. But we’re not left with much choice. We believed that it was the best option for most and people are able to opt in at any time.”

More than 22,000 residents from South Gloucestershire have subscribed to the council’s collection service, which launched on March 31 and aims to increase opportunities for residents to recycle. The collection initiative, which is part of the revised Local Waste Strategy 2013-19, offers residents a fortnightly kerbside garden waste collection and includes the collection of small electrical items, mixed plastics and Tetrapak cartons. The garden waste collection is an opt-in service and residents who do not wish to subscribe have a number of low-cost or free alternatives for disposing of their garden waste, including garden waste sacks. Residents are also being

Photos courtesy of The Mall, Cribbs Causeway

To welcome the new Spring/ Summer fashion season, The Mall, Cribbs Causeway hosted a suitably colourful fashion show, sponsored by John Lewis and presented by Andrew Barton and Mark Heyes. The show displayed this season’s diversity when it comes to fashion, from bright, carnivalthemed jewellery, to pastel, sherbet footwear, to classic black and red suit co-ords. This season’s catwalk showed that the key trends are all in the colour! The first scene of the night was from Marks and Spencer with jewellery from Pandora, presenting a fresh take on a vintage, floral theme of sherbet colours – think dainty high tea and you’ll be there! Dorothy Perkins and BHS also modeled this new pastel trend of nudes, pale greens and cool blues. The twist on standard floral print was also well executed by fashions from Next, in which an artistic flare of paint splatters and strokes in corals, blues and oranges made its way down the catwalk. The opposing trend was a bright carnival, rainforest, and ethnic Bollywood style using bold prints of palm leaves, parrots and oriental patterns in hues of shocking pink, deep oranges, bold purples and dark

leafy greens, giving off that utopian, exotic-paradise vibe to get you into the summer holiday spirit. These Parisian-chic fashions were well modeled by the likes of John Lewis, Marks and Spencer, Ann Summers, Accessorize and Bank, making it a fashion accessible to all age ranges so there really is no excuse not to get involved! Here are some snaps from the show.

Careers event inspires students Students from across South Gloucestershire have been given expert help on taking the next step at the region’s largest careers fair. Ambitions Plus brought together more than 100 employers, training providers, further education colleges and representatives from University of the West of England to inspire post-16 students as they make their choices about work or further study. The event was managed by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and the

Kingswood Partnership and was sponsored by UWE and South Gloucestershire Council. Ian Mynett, from The British Engineering Manufacturers Association Ltd, said: “Ambitions was by far the best event of its kind I have been to. It was targeted, big and very useful for promoting the apprentice route.” Councillor Ian Boulton, chair of South Gloucestershire Council commented: "It was really inspirational to see so many great organisations offering such exciting options to so many young people.”

TV’s Carol donates dress to help breast care centre A fundraising appeal for a new breast care centre has been boosted by a donation from television star Carol Vorderman. The former Countdown presenter donated one of her dresses to the £500,000 appeal to help raise funds for the centre at Southmead Hospital. The bid to create a breast care centre has been supported by Bristol’s Fashion Week, which took place at the end of March. Tickets were available for those attending the event at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway to win the celebrity’s sleeveless, charcoal dress. Carol said: “Having worked with North Bristol NHS Trust over the years, I am excited about the wonderful work

taking place to make the Bristol Breast Cancer Centre a more tranquil environment for patients facing cancer. “After my mum’s two experiences over the years, I know how frightening it can be to be faced with a cancer diagnosis, and this centre has been designed to try and reduce some of that fear and anxiety.”

She added: “I am delighted to be able to help by donating one of my dresses to the cause – I hope someone likes it.” The centre, which is planned to open in the summer, will encompass breast care services for Bristol, South Gloucestershire and parts of Bath and North East Somerset. Surgeons, radiologists and radiographers will all be based in the centre, run by North Bristol NHS Trust, enabling patients to have all the tests they require in one visit. by Rebecca Day The countdown has begun for the opening of Southmead Hospital’s new Brunel building. Since the building was handed over to North Bristol NHS Trust by developer Carillion on March 27, installation of equipment has started in preparation for the first patients to move across from existing wards and clinics. Patients will start moving into the new £430 million complex from May 12. On May 19, the emergency department at Frenchay Hospital will close at 2am, and re-open immediately at Southmead Hospital Bristol. Following this, wards and patients from Frenchay Hospital will move across. Besides the accident and emergency department, other units moving over from Frenchay Hospital include the major trauma centre, neurosciences,

ready to welcome first patients plastics and adult burns. The Brunel building is set to officially open and be fully operational on May 28. Andrea Young, chief executive of North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “This is an important step in providing world-class facilities for our patients across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and further afield. “Southmead Hospital Bristol will be a centre of excellence, not only with those services based within the new Brunel building, but also our other clinical areas such as maternity, pathology and breast care. “The building will dramatically improve privacy and dignity for patients with single rooms, en-suite facilities and a dedicated route through the hospital which means they do not have to be taken past members of the public before or after their operations.

The atrium at Southmead Hospital’s Brunel Building, above and below “The highly skilled team moving from Frenchay will be joining our great services already based at Southmead Hospital including orthopaedics and renal and transplant. So it really will be a case of brand new hospital,

same familiar and trusted faces.” Keith Hutton, project director for Carillion, said: “We are delighted to be handing over this state-of-the-art hospital which will help transform healthcare for people in and around Bristol.”

Members of the public are also being given the opportunity to take a look around the stateof-the-art building before it officially opens on April 26. Tours of the building will take from 10am to 4pm, and will include a look at the 280m-long atrium – which at its tallest point reaches the same height as the nave of Westminster Abbey. Visitors will also have the chance to see the emergency department, outpatient areas, operating theatres and the patient gardens. Sharon Hadley, membership and marketing services manager, said: “Since the handover of the building last week, excitement really is beginning to build among our staff. “It is really important to us that local people get the opportunity to see these fantastic new facilities for themselves.”

Come and GO-TRI

Multi-sport racing comes to Filton this Spring with an “Aquathlon” or Swim-Run to be hosted at Filton Leisure Centre, Elm Park on Sunday 27th April. The British Triathlon Federation and Filton Town Council are supporting the event, which is part of the new GO TRI initiative aimed at bringing multi-sport events to a new audience. “Our event is aimed at people who may be keen runners or swimmers, but have never tried combining the two in a single race.” says race organiser Garga Chamberlain of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team & Triathlon Club, an international organisation that will be staging a series of 9 events in the Bristol area this year under the Self-Transcendence Races banner. “GO TRI events are kept simple, affordable and beginner-friendly, so it’s a great chance to take on a multi-sport challenge for fun or fitness.” Other local races in the series include 5K and 2 Mile runs held in Eastville Park, Duathlons (running and cycling) at Tockington near Thornbury and a Try-a-Tri (beginner’s triathlon) in Portishead. The Swim-Run at Filton includes a 150m swim (6 lengths of the pool) and a 3km run on a loop course around Elm Park. For more information on all the Self-Transcendence Races for 2014, including the Filton Swim-Run, take a look at http:// uk.srichinmoyraces.org or call the organisers on 07702 410797.

Typical Aqua Aerobics classes will involve all the exercises you would expect in a ‘dry’ class but with added bonuses you can only get from exercising in water. Water supports the body, putting less stress on your joints and muscles • This support is great if you’re older, have suffered an injury or are recovering from illness • Water pressure helps the heart move blood around the body, putting less strain on it • The impact of gravity is less in the water allowing a greater range of motion • Working out in water can also prevent overheating, helping you exercise for longer. • And... it’s fun! Charborough Road Primary Black Country Museum

Recently, four year groups from Charborough Road Primary School enjoyed an extremely worthwhile trip to the Black Country Museum, near Wolverhampton. After a much earlier start to the day than normal, all of the Key Stage 2 classes (plus our staff and parent helpers) boarded a coach and set off full of excitement. The Black Country Museum has brought a mining village back to life and, as we’ve been studying the Victorians this term, it was the perfect choice for our trip. Once we arrived, we got into our groups and set off on a journey back in time! The highlights of the day included a trip down a real coal mine and experiencing what a lesson in a Victorian school would have been like...it was far more boring than the lessons

we’re used to! We also went into some shops, which were all very realistic and run by people dressed up in Victorian clothing. We loved our day at the museum, even the dark and scary mine! It was all so realistic and fun, we got to see first hand what we’ve been learning about in class. At the end of the day, we

Charborough Road pupils threw themselves into raising money for this worthwhile charity, and our final count was over £450! Children and staff came to school dressed in sports’ gear, and raised £261 in donations. Ella Goodman in Year 6 organised a ‘Run a Mile’ event on the school field. Pupils and staff paid to run 8 times around the field, clocking up their miles. A fabulous £110 was raised. To provide the energy for all of that running, three Year 6 girls – Safira, Megan and Lilly-Mae – baked over 300 cakes between them, and sold them to pupils, raising a grand total of £85. Here’s a picture of Lilly-Mae, Safira and Megan sampling the cakes before selling!

Schools news Cutting through rumours about our local schools

29

Dr Helen Holman, the head teacher of Orchard School Bristol, says much that is said about local schools is simply not true or out of date

“Middle class hysteria” This is an interesting phrase and one which a friend told me was used at a another school’s open evening by a parent governor who despaired at families who would never consider sending their youngsters to his child’s school. In fact, never mind that they would not “send” their child there. They would not even consider it. It seems that the majority of secondary schools in Bristol “suffer” with this problem and it leads me to feel not anger or upset, but frustration. So often I hear things said about my school and other schools which are simply not true or are based on some kind of school gate Chinese whispers. You know the kind of thing ... “My brother was bullied at X school 20 years ago ... I saw a child smoking (not sure when but I saw it) ... they wear horrible polo shirts (I THINK they still do) ... the head wasn’t very inspiring at open night (but hasn’t he gone now?... or was that the other school?) ... and their exam results are poor and getting worse (or are they getting better?) ... and Bristol is the worst city in the western hemisphere for education (or was that the West Country .. I read something about that

somewhere). Anyway, my daughter will certainly not go through that door.” Frustrating though this all is, I know and understand that there are parents out there who are deeply concerned. I know too that every head teacher

and teacher wants parents and families to be engaged, interested and, yes, demanding of the best. It would be discourteous to them to talk about middle class hysteria but I do see the damaging effect on them of rumour and misinformation.

For several years now – with Orchard School one of the leading campaigners – there has been an acceptance that headline exam figures mean very little. They tell you about a year group, not the prospects for individual children. There are many more sophisticated measures available for parents since the Government revamped the reporting of exam results, not least the progress figures which show how well a school impacts on specific groups of children. Funnily enough, what those more telling measures show is that, in Bristol, most of our schools are quite similar in terms of likely achievement for an individual child. So it then becomes more about the emotional engagement of the school and how its staff and its organisation will enrich the life of the child beyond the exam results. As teachers we want parents to have an open mind and to visit us during our school day. Most schools have some kind of open morning policy and will welcome parents and children to visit classes, meet children and staff and get a feel for the school. I do believe that then, and only then, can a parent feel they have a full understanding of what a school is all about.

Abbeywood Community School Girls’ Hockey

The Y7 and Y8 girls hockey team played in a tournament against Winterbourne, Castle, Chipping Sodbury and John Cabot. The first match, against Winterbourne’s first team was a convincing 2-1 win for Abbeywood. Excellent team work and some lovely passing meant that Abbeywood dominated. Some fantastic saves from Abigail Monk and two excellent shots from Rachel Arberry secured the win. This is Abbeywood’s first ever hockey team and what a fantastic way to start. Unfortunately, both Castle and Chipping Sodbury beat Abbeywood 1-0. The next match against Winterbourne’s second team was another close game. Abbeywood girls remained in good spirits and continued to play well as a team. Final score was 0-0.

Abbeywood finished the evening on a high. They beat John Cabot 1-0. An excellent effort by everyone involved.

keep up the good work this month! It’s Spring and your New Year health kick is starting to feel a bit too much like hard work. Every year people give up healthy eating and stop exercising at the end of January and before you can blink they’ve regained all the weight and feel just as lethargic and sluggish they did before. Please don’t give up now. Don’t waste a month of effort. This is the time to consolidate, motivate and turn this health kick into a habit. Think about what you’ve been doing and how it’s working for you. If you’ve been eating a healthy, natural diet and cutting out processed foods, how do you feel now? Are you sleeping better, and how do your clothes feel? If you see changes and improvements don’t stop now, keep up the good work! Then there’s that gym membership. You attended regularly for a few weeks but it’s already started to drop off and if you give up now you’ll never achieve the active lifestyle you wanted. To keep your motivation, freshen up your routine – ask one of the gym staff to write you a new programme or suggest new exercises, or you could try out a new class, or exercise outdoors. Run, cycle or walk different routes, distances and speeds to keep your body guessing and adapting. The message is that if it’s working for you don’t stop now. You can do it. Keep up the effort and reap the rewards.

Go on... it’s not as scary as it sounds!!

The show is now nearly 20 years old, and HIV/AIDS has become a chronic rather than acutely fatal disease in many areas of the world, so again I found myself pondering, is it,

for audiences in developed countries, still as compelling as it was when it premièred in 1996? I needn’t have worried. The emotion of the story clearly spoke to the members of this cast who rose to the challenges the production poses with energy and an enthusiasm which more than compensated for an occasional struggle to hit the right note. This was all the more remarkable given that the production was doublecast to offer as many of the young actors as possible an opportunity to shine. My only quibble was the lack of makeup that left characters dying of AIDS looking remarkably hale and hearty! The message of Rent is that we should accept people the way they are, while being true to whatever drives us. I left the theatre with my favourite line from the show ringing in my ears: “The opposite of war isn’t peace … It’s creation!”

Loosely based on Puccini’s La Bohème, it itself verges on opera, requiring its cast to sing and dance its way through rapid dialogue and at times heated discussion. As I took my seat in the Olympus Theatre on the WISE campus in Filton, I wondered, would the Year 2 Musical Theatre students prove up to the job? National table tennis honour for Filton’s Louis Filton boy Louis Price is top of his class when it comes to playing table tennis. Having only picked up a bat for the first time 14 months ago, the nine-year old has already qualified to represent Avon in the primary school championships this month. He started playing last January when the weather was too bad to play football. According to his father, Chris, who also plays table tennis, as soon as Louis picked up a bat, he said “I quite like this”. The St Teresa’s Primary pupil will be representing Avon in the 2014 Butterfly Schools’ Individual Table Tennis National Finals in Doncaster on April 26, where more than 300 players will attend. He has already won the Blackpool under-11s tournament in March, as well as winning the Cardiff Dragons under-11s tournament in February. Chris said: “If he wants to continue, he will certainly progress quickly. “Table tennis is growing and getting bigger in Bristol, and I think we need more kids being a part of it.”

How to keep your senior pet in tip-top condition At Filton Vets4Pets we like to work with local pet owners to encourage awareness of senior pet-related issues. Like humans, as dogs and cats age, they can begin to experience health problems. But unlike us, they often can’t let us know that they’re feeling unwell. Veterinary surgeon and partner Michael Parry says: “As our pets get older they can develop age-related issues, including mobility problems and stiffness, weight loss or gain, dental problems and lumps and bumps which can be signs of cancer.” If you’re concerned about

your pet’s health as they get older, why not pop into the surgery because until the end of April we are offering a Senior Pet Health Check for just £25. We will give your pet a thorough examination to check everything is as it should be. And if we do recommend further treatment as a result of their health check, we’ll put the £25 you’ve already paid towards the cost of it.

I must say that I have always loved a good old disaster movie. The first one I remember was about a comet that was going to hit the earth and the film followed the exploits of a selected few who built a rocket to escape just in time before disaster struck and then to return and pick up the pieces and start anew. Since then there have been many that I have sat down and enjoyed. Hollywood and the public at the box office can’t get enough of them it seems. Aliens coming to take over the world; massive volcanoes erupting and shifting the geological structure of the earth; plagues that suddenly decimate the world population. The themes are endless. Not content with looking to the future for such themes, Hollywood has now looked to the past in its latest ‘disaster movie’ genre. The film ‘Noah’ is being advertised everywhere

and it seems it is drawing in the crowds. As a child I remember reading the story of Noah in the Bible with mixed feelings. I was brought up to understand God as a loving, caring and compassionate God. A God who loved the creation that had been brought into being out of nothing. The God portrayed in the story of ‘Noah’ is anything but a loving, caring and compassionate God. This God is a vengeful God who desires not to create, but to smite. Whilst understanding the literary style

with Father Thomas Finnegan Parish priest of St Teresa’s in Filton and St Vincent’s in Southmead of the author, who wanted to teach a lesson to those who read it, I couldn’t help feel sorry for those who succumbed to the flood and the way they were portrayed in the Biblical tale. Surly they should have been given a second chance, an opportunity to turn away from wicked ways into ways of light and truth. There are some, who believe that the future portrayed in the disaster movie will indeed happen and some who believe that it is God who wills it to happen. That’s fine by me if this is

what they want to believe. But it is not my belief. God does indeed love all things created and that includes us. God does not wish to smite us; we are good enough at doing this to ourselves. What God wants of us is to be responsible stewards of all things created and that means effort and a desire from us to cherish and care for life in all its forms. I will probably at some point go and watch Noah at the cinema and probably enjoy it, but it will not make me see God any differently.

Anyone travelling up and down the A38 at Patchway will have noticed our new police centre is rapidly taking shape. You’ll also have seen that Filton police station on Elm Park Road has now closed. The site has been sold, but minor delays in the construction of the new site meant the building wasn’t ready for officers to move into. I’d like to reassure you that officers continue to patrol the area from a temporary base at Southmead police station, just two miles down the road.

XP has eXPired You might have heard that on April 8, 2014, Microsoft Windows XP would come to the end of its life. But what does that mean? Firstly Windows XP is an operating system for a PC. This means it “holds” the machine together. When you turn your machine on, it makes all the parts inside talk to each other to make the computer work. It was released in 2001, and since then it has been replaced by Vista, 7 and Windows 8. “End of life” means that Microsoft feels it is too out of date to maintain. So they will not release any new security updates for the software, including Internet Explorer 8. Therefore, when they find a security hole in their system, they will not release a patch to repair it. The machine itself will continue to work normally but will become more and more vulnerable. The concern is that unscrupulous hackers are waiting in the wings until they find out about a new flaw, and then use that to infect or attack your PC. You therefore have three options: • Continue using Windows XP and accept the risk. There are things you can do to reduce your risk, such as stop using Internet Explorer 8. • Upgrade your existing PC to Windows 7 or 8. • Replace your PC. There is a belief that nearly a third of all PCs will still be using Windows XP after this date, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Of course, if you would like to have a chat about this and how we can help keep you secure, please contact us on 0117 969 8767 or visit us in our shop on the corner of Filton Avenue and the A4174. An artist’s impression of how the new aerospace museum planned for Filton could look

£1million pledged towards aerospace museum scheme More than £1 million has been pledged towards long-awaited plans for a fitting place to house Filton’s Concorde and celebrate the area’s aviation heritage. The Bristol Aero Collection Trust will receive £1.1 million from South Gloucestershire Council to develop a new aerospace museum and learning centre. Concorde 216 will be housed in the new attraction, which will also include a learning centre specialising in engineering, science and technology. It will tell the story of the region's aviation industry – past, present and future – and will be at the heart of a new 120acre employment zone focused on aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors. The sizeable contribution from the council was agreed by councillors last month as part of the council’s Capital Programme for 2014/15 to 2016/17, and it is expected the majority of the cash will come from increased business rates paid to the council as the Filton site is developed and companies move in.

In a joint statement, South Gloucestershire Council leaders councillors John Calway, Ruth Davis and Andy Perkins said: “We have long supported plans for a dedicated centre to celebrate Filton’s aerospace heritage and provide a permanent home for the muchloved Concorde 216. “The area is the birthplace of the UK’s aerospace industry and remains an internationallyrenowned centre of aviation excellence, hosting giants such as Rolls-Royce, Airbus and GKN. “The centre will help to safeguard this distinguished heritage for generations to come while also acting as a focus for exciting new developments, such as the Enterprise Area, which will help to secure Filton’s continued success into the future. “We are delighted to have been able to approve this significant contribution, and especially pleased that it can be funded by reinvesting business rates generated in the new Filton Enterprise Area.” Filton’s aerospace businesses

together are one of the largest employers in South Gloucestershire and a major contributor to the regional and national economy. Iain Gray, chair of Bristol Aero Collection Trust welcomed the news, saying: “I am delighted that South Gloucestershire Council has made this substantial contribution to the Bristol Aerospace Centre as it will make a huge difference to the project’s momentum. “I am also grateful for the council’s firm and determined support over the years, which has been fundamental to our continued progress. “Like us, the council recognises the great importance of celebrating this region’s world-class aerospace industry, preserving Concorde for public display, and investing in learning and skills development, especially in science, engineering and technology. “Many organisations already share our vision and we look forward to others joining the funding of this immensely valuable project.”

News 90th celebration for Nicol Photo taken at Nicol Blount’s 90th birthday celebration at Malvern. Nicol Blount in white shirt, son Andrew to his right, daughters Helen, far right, and Catherine to the left.

By Doug Daniels No doubt those who attended St Peter’s Church, Filton will have been welcomed by a friendly gentleman waiting at the door to show them to their pews. Such was the dedication of Nicol Blount who, along with his late dear wife, Daphne, served the church for a long period of time. I personally met Nicol ... Nick to me ... whilst working at Bristol Siddeley Engines ...now Rolls Royce. As a designer I relied on his services as a “balance engineer” ... equating function and weight on several engines, significantly engines for Harrier and Concorde. Nick was a devout Yorkshireman born in Rossington, South Yorkshire. In early years he was a surveyor in Rossington pits. He met Daphne, a choir girl born in Barnsley.

They met in Rotherham in 1943. Serving in the Army in India he later saw service in Palestine in the 9th Airborne Squadron Royal Engineers. He began his Filton career at BAC Engines. It was both a duty and a privilege to attend his 90th birthday celebrations at Malvern, Worcestershire. Although his apartment was hard to locate it attracted a gathering of over 90 persons ... many from Filton. On Daphne’s passing, daughter Catherine and Helen invited him back under their surveillance in conjunction with son Andrew who lives in London. It was for me a real pleasure to meet him again. I am confident that he is both happy and healthy as he progresses into his 90th year. He looks forward to “Filton Voice” to keep him in touch with Filton which he loves dearly His retirement is well deserved.

TV chance for Filton students Two lucky media students from SGS College in Filton will be given the opportunity to undertake work experience on daytime TV show, Flog It! Talent manager Rebecca Hanmer from the BBC came into the classroom last month

to give the learners an insight into the industry, tips on CV writing and how to prepare for an interview. Two students will be selected from these interviews to undertake work experience with the team and attend an evaluation day as a runner.

Airbus awards for young graduates

Two promising young graduates have been recognised for their achievements and dedication to the business and have been named Graduate of the Year and Filton Apprentice of the Year by Airbus at the company’s Recognition of Learning event in Bristol last month. Nick Vitale from Southville, Bristol was named Direct Entry Graduate of the Year. During his two years on the programme he published a research paper, mentored masters’ students, and saved the business over £160,000 on a design project. Apprentice of the Year was awarded to John Randall. After achieving a first class honours degree in Music, John Randall changed career by joining the higher apprentice scheme at Airbus. He is now studying for a degree in Mechanical Engineering, regularly being fasttracked academically.

Twinning group positive as St Vallier - Filton - Witzenhausen they prepare for French trip

By Doug Daniels The Annual General Meeting of Filton Twinning Association, held at the Pavilion, Elm Park on Thursday, March 27th, retuned a positive outlook on its future. Yet there were some doubts about the current membership numbers which were in need of some reinforcing. Admittedly current membership renewals were being received. But there were additional interests being obtained from nearby regions and German coaches that were promising. There was particular interest Andrew’sbyChurch during young persons and it was to theseto thatFilton, the Association were winning visit depending on the Twinning instant greeting from Association’s future. Autumn, 2012

Around 30 members were so far booked on the trip. All those visiting will be self funded. But it does include young Youth Club members who are especially encouraged due to the educational value of the visit. Bernard Duckett, Chair, who was due for re-election is remaining in the position to oversee the visit by our twin town members next year. There are no other position changes thereby maintaining the Association’s positive direction for the future. Much praise was afforded to the very successful visit to Witzenhausen last year which was considered by many to be one of the best visits ever made to the German Twin town. Having existed for around 37 years the twinning partnership

shows no signs of abating. Present at the meeting was Mr Roy Isaacs its former President and co-founder. Also Mr Roy Parry, its current President who was an active official at the Association’s creation. The Association’s co-founder, the late Alderman Eric Smith, MBE credited Filton to be the first Parish (as Filton then was) in the UK to twin with a European Town. Reflections of the two world wars were prominently portrayed in the original twinnings. The Twinning Association has established positive friendships since then becoming a very worthy icon in establishing relations with our European partners. Membership details – phone: 01454 260 808

BBC award for local ladies’ chorus

Avon Harmony, the ladies a cappella chorus from Horfield, were awarded a “Choir of the Day” certificate at the Bristol auditions for the BBC Choir of the Year competition. The auditions are taking place around the country, and twenty one choirs from the southwest and South Wales took part in the Bristol event. The award means that the chorus now enters a moderation process to be considered for entry to the next round of the competition in October. The chorus sings a cappella, four-part harmony, and sang two barbershop style songs in the audition. The judges complimented them on their presentation and the way they engaged the audience, as well as their singing. The chorus is planning a concert in Clevedon in September, and will also compete in the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers convention in November, and welcomes new members who would like to sing ladies’ four part harmony. Details of rehearsals, at which visitors are always welcome can be found at www.avonharmony.co.uk

We’ll help people stay in their home after illness A new provider for adult community healthcare services has taken up the reins for people in Filton - and pledged to help people who need healthcare to stay in their homes as long as possible. Sirona Care & Health is a not-for-profit social enterprise and was awarded the five year contract to provide community health services in South Gloucestershire following a yearlong intensive selection process.

Email: info@lanescarpets.co.uk

Janet Rowse, chief executive, said: “The aim is to help people stay in their own home for as long as possible and for those who do need to go into hospital, to return them to their homes quickly by providing support for them and their carers. “We know people recover much better and quicker in environments which they know. “Our model has everybody - district nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists,

podiatrists – all working around the individual rather than the individual fitting into the service. “We are working with our colleagues across all health services, especially local GPs, to make this happen and everyone we are liaising with is enthusiastic to make it work.” Sirona is publicly funded by the NHS and, in some areas, local authorities and is a community interest company which does not have shareholders.

It’s child’s play

With a redevelopment planned for Filton’s Elm Park play area, this month Jackie Sims of Filton Community History takes a look back at what was on offer for local youngsters since the 1980s

1990, view from the top of the slide at Elm Park. Scary?

When Filton Town Council developed the Badminton Hall building and the car park, the play equipment was moved to the corner alongside Shellard Road and The Link Road, out of the way, and on a sloping site! The rather high slide was on a large patch of asphalt which is still there, east of the skate park. We moved back to Filton in 1987. Our 10 year old was disgusted with the ‘babies’ play equipment but enjoyed using the garden area – in the area now occupied by the boules court. It had lots of bushes to hide in. Then the groundsman cut it to the ground and it became a useless play area. In the early 1990s the Town Council finally agreed to build an appropriate, safe play area. In

1991 Filton Town Councillors visited play parks from Pilning to Stoke Gifford to Saltford to Easton to Horfield. (we heard about Saltford in a local radio broadcast). Photos were taken and mounted in a display with residents invited to visit and comment, providing helpful information for councillors. Specialists who had developed exciting play facilities across the country were then engaged to build it. A long debate was had about where on Elm Park, but finally the current site east of the Badminton Hall was agreed. The brief was to provide safe, exciting, challenging equipment that could be used by children of all abilities and ages! Health and safety was now a factor

Top, from left Town Clerk John Lucena and Councillors Jackie Sims, Ian Scott, and Brian Freeguard. Bottom, Cllr Graham Hiscox, all at Owen Square, Easton, Bristol.

which had to be considered. No more asphalt surfaces under equipment! The new play park was supported by Airbus and opened in November 1991 (I thought it

was in the summer as part of a fun day but this is the date on the plaque alongside the play area.) It was rapidly realised that the area needed fencing all round, not just the road side.

Councillors at that time had aspirations to regularly add a new piece of equipment. Unfortunately this never happened although the play area has been well maintained with

damaged or worn parts replaced as needed. Councillors change every four years and come in with different priorities. It is time to upgrade and expand this very well used facility.

Students’ successes in the spotlight at annual awards ceremony Students from Abbeywood Community School were among 200 youngsters from across South Gloucestershire honoured at an awards ceremony. The 2014 Student Achievement Awards were held at Filton BAWA on March 27 to celebrate the success of pupils at the region’s secondary schools. Council chairman Councillor Ian Boulton was joined by Tom Robson from Tom Robson Education (TREDU) and Councillor Ian Blair, chairman of the children and young people committee, to hand out certificates.

Mr Blair said: “We are committed to driving up the quality of teaching and learning for young people in our schools. “Equipping our secondary school students with the right skills they will need when they leave school and make the transition to the workplace remains a key priority for South Gloucestershire Council. “The Student Achievement Awards provide an opportunity to congratulate young people on their achievements to date and I wish them every success for the future.”
