Precept certain to rise as council to use reserves to balance budget Filton Town Council will have to use its reserves to make up a considerable budget shortfall in the next 12 months. It is also likely that the council will be forced to raise the precept by at least the Government capping level, with accountants recommending that a 4.8% increase is needed. The current average precept bill is around £14.50 per month. Resident Dave Mikkleson said there were serious concerns that expected revenue from the leisure centre for next year exceeds this year’s budget - which itself has not been achieved. He told the full council meeting: “In October, it looked like the council was going to fall £200,000 short of achieving its budgeted revenue and I was advised it would be made up during the year. “At the finance meeting, the revenue projection for the leisure centre was £450,000 - £160,000 more than this year. “This is just storing up problems for later on.” Councillors said that these were draft figures and that budgets were being reviewed as well as stringent cost cutting having been introduced since November. Reserves will be used to fill the gaps in the budget with the intention of building them up again next year. Council chairman Rikki Teml said: “It’s going to be tough and we are looking at all options regarding the precept. We can’t say (what the final figure will be) until we know about the Government’s capping level. We have looked at the budget and the targets will be changed. We have budgeted for a 4.92% increase in the precept and we don’t expect it to rise from that.” The council may not be permitted by central government to introduce such a rise in precept, meaning reserves would need to be used to make up the shortfall.
Rikki Teml, top, and Bill Moore Using the reserves would mean the council would need to rebuild its funds. It is recommended local authorities have al least three months’ expenditure in reserve at any one time. Cllr Bill Moore said that the council was ‘staring into the abyss’. He said: “There has been a loss of control in the budget.” In an open letter, Cllr Moore said that during his time as chair of finance, he was “thwarted” by fellow councillors over cost saving measures and he was critical of councillors. He said residents should not be ‘penalised for the current financial situation’. He also said that, in his view, the leisure centre needed to be managed independently from the town council, a new owner should be sought for the Ratepayers pub, and he called for openness and ‘transparency’ when addressing the current difficulties. The council said staff salaries were not at risk.

Church ‘overflowing’ as congregation says farewell to Brian after 27 years
By Rebecca Day After 27 years of playing an influential role at the heart of Filton’s community, Reverend Brian Arman has retired as priest at St Peter’s Church. His retirement has been met with great sadness from Filton people - many saying that he will be greatly missed. Rev’d Arman’s final service, which was “overflowing” with people bidding their farewells to the much-loved priest, took place on February 1. He has been described on Facebook as a “very special man” who did “wonders for the church and community” and it will be difficult to replace him at the church. One person wrote: “What an amazing man. I can’t thank him enough for all he’s done for our family, the congregation and wider community.” Rev’d Arman has played a large part in many people’s lives, in times of both happiness and sadness. His typical week consisted of up to 80 hours’ work and involved a variety of duties, from caring for the sick and those who had fallen on hard times, to carrying out baptisms, marriages and burial services. He also spent a lot of time working in schools. Born in Swindon in 1954, Rev’d Arman’s childhood was not a particularly religious one, he says. His parents sent him to Sunday school, but that was as far as it went. He told the Filtonvoice: “My father was adamant that I should join the Navy. He thought it would provide a good start to life. But I had an inner sense - I knew that joining the navy wasn’t my calling. I wasn’t a great scholar, or felt beckoned to have an academic future. But when I was 15, I had a deep sense of wanting to serve God.” It was at the age of 20, after the death of his father, that he started university in Birmingham to study Theology and Modern History. He added: “I believe becoming a priest is something that comes from within - and people just plant seeds along the way to help you grow.”
Rev’d Arman was ordained at 23 - the youngest age possible to be appointed as a priest - and has spent the last 42 years serving people both within and outside the church. In 1978, he became a rector in Lawrence Weston, and four years later, was made the chief priest at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Bishopston. He moved to Filton in 1988, where he has remained ever since. He even recalls the date he moved into the rectory: January 20. “I have not only been responsible for the whole parish, but the 10,000 souls living in Filton,” he said. “My highlight as priest at St Peter’s has been seeing the church grow, in numbers as well as in spirituality, and watching people’s lives change. “Having served the people of Filton under God has been the greatest experience and privilege of my life.” While at the church, he established the popular cafe alongside Curate Rev’d Canon Elspeth Desmond - which serves up homemade cakes, and good
quality teas and coffees for free. He says that it is a good place for older people to go and feel cherished. Rev’d Arman described his leaving ceremony as a “tearful” occasion, and was heartened by the gifts him and his wife received. He has now dedicated the next 12 months to having some time off - he has not spent more
than two weeks away from the parish in 27 years - with longterm plans including writing several books. He assures Filton residents that he will be staying local after he moves out of the rectory. It is not yet known who will be filling Rev’d Arman’s role, but it is expected that a successor will be appointed over the summer, at the earliest.

News Councillor out - then back in after meeting attendance row A Filton town councillor has been dramatically reinstated to her position just days after she was removed from the council for failure to attend meetings. Cllr Melanie Drewitt, a Labour councillor, told the town council she had been suffering with a long-term asthma problem which prevented her attendance and that she was given no warning of being removed from the council. In an email from the town clerk, Lesley Reuben, she was told she would no longer be a councillor. But in a twist at last month’s council meeting, Cllr Bill Moore urged colleagues to consider reinsating Cllr Drewitt under the co-opt procedure and by a majority, this was accepted. Cllr Moore had threatened
to resign if Cllr Drewitt was not reinstated. On social media, Cllr Andrew Chubb said councillors had been “harangued and bullied in the meeting” into bringing Cllr Drewitt back to the council. Cllr Drewitt said it was a democratic process and that those opposing her coming back to council were outvoted. She also said she had been told by South Glos that a warning should have been given and also criticised Labour colleagues, including Cllrs Chubb and Brian Mead who opposed her return, for failing to warn her that this action was about to happen. She said: “I am a lifelong asthma sufferer and I had been very poorly. “I always sent apologies when I missed a meeting and when
A complete funeral service from £1,850
I approached South Glos for advice they said I should have been notified and warned. They also said they were surprised my fellow Labour councillors did not inform me. Surely an extension could have been granted. It was a shock as I wanted to serve a complete term.” Town clerk Lesley Reuben said the council had followed a democratic process which says that councillors who do not attend meetings for six months will be automatically cease to be a councillor. The Filton branch of the Labour Party did not wish to comment Cllr Ken Brock has also been removed under the same process and his place is up for grabs under the co-opt process. Cllr Drewitt was elected
for Labour but issues with the local party related to decisions she made as chair of finance led to her declaring herself ‘Independent Labour’ before reverting last year to Labour. At the time she said: “I support the Labour Party and all that it represents however due to recent events I feel some councillors are not as supportive to the residents that elected us. Therefore I will be standing as an Independent Labour councillor.” For more on the co-opt process, turn to Page 21

Statement by Cllr Drewitt I would like to thank the residents for their support at full council. In the time of my absence from the council I was in and out of hospital with life threatening asthma attacks. I still sent my apologies before EVERY meeting and when back home liaised on other council matters and responded to residents’ emails when able. The last meeting I attended was on 16/10/14 along with councillors Daniels, Briffet and Teml. However I was told this was not classed an “official” meeting although this was organised by the office and took place on town council property. Doctor’s notes were freely available had the town clerk requested them. I had received no prior warning or been advised of the policy for sickness and non attendance until receiving notification on 7/1/15 from the town clerk that I had been removed from the council. It was a complete shock. Longer serving or South Glos councillors would be aware I was unaware and hadn’t been advised. It is normal to be given warning which didn’t happen. South Glos were also surprised my fellow labour councillors did not warn me either. In fact fellow Labour Councillor Monk submitted a motion against me, in which new people would be co opted on for both vacancies. This was voted for by Councillors Monk, Mead, Chubb, Freeguard and Kenyon.

South Glos also informed me that as my asthma was known to the council and is also classed as a disability I could have been granted an extension in my absence. I thank South Gloucestershire Councillor Ian Scott who reminded the town clerk and council of this at the meeting. Justice prevailed as there was a majority vote on Councillor Moore’s motion to co opt me back on to the council as it was felt that notice should have been given to me. I went Independent Labour as I felt I was left with no other option after the response I received from Labour colleagues due to me implementing a charge for boules as well as over resident participation at meetings. I thought it only fair that with the current climate we needed to recoup costs for this facility by charging for its use but this clearly did not make me popular with some of my fellow Labour colleagues. Before taking this route I took advice from Labour regional office. A year ago I rethought the decision as I was voted for by the public as a Labour councillor so I dropped the independent title. I am very grateful to Cllrs Moore, Daniels, Briffett and Teml for seeing the injustice. Cllr Drewitt also said her party affiliation and finance committee status had not been changed on the council website.

Community centre in £70,000 appeal An online appeal has been launched to raise money for the leaking roof and other repairs at Filton Community Centre. Filton Community Association is a registered charity which maintains the community centre. The appeal, at www. gofundme.com/l98r5s, seeks to raise £70,000. Organisers say: “The centre was built in 1966 and beyond an extension in the 1970s, there have been no new developments or repairs. This has now left the centre in a dated state, with serious issues like a leaking roof and struggling heating system. This has led to the centre becoming a bit dilapidated and in
need of attention. We hope that we can turn the situation around before it is too late, and save the community centre. “We need to repair the leaking flat roof, which will allow us to redecorate and increase our appeal. We would like to fit solar panels to our huge roof to allow us to continue into the future without fear of a giant electricity bill shutting us down. We need to improve our facilities for disabled people and widen our appeal amongst the community. “At the moment we are struggling to break even after heating and electric bills have been paid.” More next month

£50,000 study to sort out traffic problems at George pub junction The junction of the Ring Road with Filton Avenue, at the George Pub building, will be the subject of a £50,000 study by South Glos Council to explore solutions to the traffic flow problems. Residents have frequently complained about the junction, which allows traffic to cross south to north on Filton Avenue but not north to south. Drivers travelling from the Conygre area of Filton need to use the Abbeywood Retail Park roundabout to continue on Filton Avenue. Other issues include the bus stop on Filton Avenue southbound near the George which causes severe rush hour hold-ups when buses pull in, with queues backed up to the ring road. Further complications include the nature of the junction, which is not a straightforward crossroad, and also any consequences for residents living near and beyond the junction. Filton Cllr Roger Hutchinson said: “The Planning, Transport and Strategic Environment Committee of South Glos Council agreed to put a figure of £50,000 into the budget for 2015/16 to do a full study of the King George VI junction. “It will take in all issues surrounding the junction and what affect different possible solutions to the problems that exist there might have on traffic flows there and on surrounding roads to try to come up with a solution that will help vehicles
“The study will take in all issues surrounding the junction.” - Cllr Roger Hutchinson, pictured crossing and turning rather than negotiating the dog’s bone between Filton Roundabout and the MoD. “I have been pressing for this to be done as a result of concerns expressed to me by residents and my own observations and experiences.”

School says thanks as Filton charity donates heart equipment Shield Road Primary School has been presented with an £845 heart defibrillator by a local charity. Filton Chest and Heart which raises money to buy health equipment normally for GP surgeries and other health facilities - this time bought the device for the school after hearing there were pupils who had conditions which could mean the equipment would be vital in the case of an emergency.
A defibrillator delivers an electrical current through the chest to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm, allowing it to pump again. Chairman Brian Smith, along with members of the charity committee, visited during a special assembly last month to present the cheque. Welcoming them to the school, headteacher Jim Mepham said he was very grateful to the charity for their kind gesture.

The site, which has been built in place of the former Esso garage, also has 19 parking spaces, with one disabled space. Assistant manager, Joe Coleman, pictured, said: “At

An artist’s impression of the planned development of 16 new homes on the site of Newleaze House in Roycroft Road
Go-ahead for 16 affordable homes to be built on Newleaze House site Planning chiefs have given the go-ahead to plans to build 16 new affordable homes on a Filton site formerly used for older people’s housing The £2.1 million development by Bristol landlord Merling Housing will comprise 10 twoand three-bedroom houses and six one- and two-bedroom flats on the old Newleaze House site. The plans were drawn up following consultation with
neighbours, councillors and former residents, after one potential idea to build student accommodation on the site was met with dismay. Merlin’s head of development Michelle Thomas said: “Newleaze House has a large number of unpopular bedsits, with narrow corridors and many stairs, which really weren’t ideal for older people or anyone with mobility issues. “We closed the site last year
and found residents safer, more suitable homes. The idea of turning the scheme into student accommodation was mentioned as a possibility but it quickly became clear that this wasn’t feasible or popular with people in the area. “We made sure that people were consulted on what our actual plans were and took on board their views. “We’re now ready to transform the site of this old
building and provide a number of quality homes that will benefit the community.” Work on the Newleaze development is set to begin in March 2015, and is due to be completed around 12 months later. The project is one of a number across the Greater Bristol area, in which Merling Housing hopes to create 84 new affordable homes by 2017 among the 300 homes its is building.

£110m funding agreed for schools and transport at former airfield site Investment of £110 million to fund facilities including new schools, community centres and transport links has been agreed for the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood (CPNN). Councillors on South Gloucestershire’s development control west committee have backed the funding package in principle. The money has been secured through an agreement with landowners and developers to provide the new facilities for the community that will be created as 5,700 new homes are built on the former Filton Airfield site. The multimillion-pound package includes: l five new schools, including a new secondary school and four primary schools l four new nurseries l two community centres and a multi-use community hub with provision for GP health services
l more than £30 million will be provided for transport infrastructure, to be matchfunded by the council l nearly 1,000 new affordable homes provided across the development at no cost to the council l recreational, leisure facilities and allotments. Cllr Dave Hockey, chair of the development control west committee, said: “The decision marks another major milestone for the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood which will in time create many new homes,

jobs, community facilities and vital infrastructure. “Provisions have been made for two new rail stations and the Metrobus, which are very important in addressing the additional journeys associated with such a major development. Arrangements are also being made for the relocation of the air ambulance and police helicopters. “The council has worked closely with the leading landowners and developers, and other stakeholders, to secure the £110 million deal.
We will continue to work closely with local community leaders in the surrounding South Gloucestershire and Bristol areas to address the impacts of the new neighbourhood to ensure its benefits are maximised as the development takes shape over the next decade. “A resident liaison group is also to be established prior to the commencement of development on site to ensure that any problems arising can be discussed and resolved in a timely way.” At the same committee meeting earlier this month, councillors also gave the goahead to Persimmon Homes to build 1,000 homes and a primary school on land at Wyke Beck Road, at Cribbs Causeway. More information on the CPNN is available online at www.southglos.gov.uk/cpnn.
Local doctor Diana Warner is to fight election for Green Party
Dr Diana Warner, a local GP, has been named as the Green Party’s candidate to contest the Filton and Bradley Stoke seat in May’s general election. Dr Warner, a Filton resident with two adult children, says she is a staunch supporter of the NHS and her motivation to run for election comes from her understanding of the problems facing local consituents and the increasing hardship she has seen people at all levels of income suffering. She has worked as a GP for 25 years, currently at Stoke Gifford and Conygre Medical Centre, and says she has seen first hand the strain placed on the NHS by cycles of change over the past 10 years and disruption to services. Through political action she she says she wants to improve the health of local people and protect the NHS. A spokesperson for the local Green Party said: “This is an exciting time for the Filton and Bradley Stoke Green Party. Here in the Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency, the Green Party membership has risen
by 20 members, to a present total of 66, in less than one week. “If this can transform into a substantial Green presence in Westminster, we can achieve improvement in our lives on a level not seen for generations. “Many local people are beginning to realise that things can simply be done differently. They are looking in increasing numbers to the Green Party for answers to increasing inequality, lack of representative democracy and destructive environmental policies.” Anyone who wishes to get in touch with Diana can email her at dianawarnerfbsgp@gmail. com.

Panto time in Filton. Oh yes it is! One of Bristol’s biggest am dram groups is all set for staging its annual pantomime – The King’s New Clothes. The Filton-based St Andrew’s Players will be putting on the production from Wednesday, February 18th until Saturday, February 21st at 7:30pm at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Elm Park, Filton. There will a matinee performance on the Saturday at 2.30pm. St Andrew’s Players donate proceeds from the shows to local charities, and this year they’re raising money for Young and Free, a buddying and befriending service for disabled young people with physical and sensory impairments aged 16-25 in the Bristol area, as well as Ups and Downs, a Bridgewaterbased Down’s Syndrome support charity with links to Charborough Road school. Directors Martin Emmerson
and Andrew Dixon said they had chosen The King’s New Clothes because they wanted to do something different. “Although it’s a well-known and well-loved childhood story,
most people won’t know it as a pantomime,” said Lennon Rich, spokesperson for the Players. “It’s a fantastic show full of the usual elements – goodies,
baddies, circus fleas and welldressed kings”. “The cast and crew have been working on the production since September and it promises to be a show you won’t want to miss!”

Young stars of the future tread the boards in a West End show Dreams came true for young performers from Bristol when they trod the boards of a West End stage for a musical theatre tribute show. Aged from 12 to 20, the students attend a weekly training session with the National Academy of Performing Arts – NAPA – in Filton. NAPA, which also has hubs in Newport, Birmingham and London, took over The Phoenix Theatre in Charing Cross Road for the production. The Bristol team performed Let The Sun Shine from Hair, Run Freedom Run from Urinetown, A Little More Homework from 13 and Louder Than Words from Tick Tick Boom. NAPA patrons and current West End stars Caroline Sheen, Kit Orton, Kelly-Anne Gower and Ben Evans also performed solos.
Musical director of the Bristol hub Emily John said: “These young people had the chance of a lifetime in performing on a West End stage and were superb. There was such good energy on stage and they all gave a professional performance. Many of our students want to make the theatre their chosen career
path and this was an excellent experience for them.” The NAPA students from Bristol and surrounding area are Matt Price, Josh Price, Josh Collins, Emily Jones, Ellie Lovell, James Dickens, Michael Vien, Charlotte Woodward, Ashleigh Stevens, Jordan Brailsford, Ruby Lightwood, Georgia Butt, Daisy
Murray, Chloe Shiner, Owen Hughes, Will Jones, Andrew Gibbs, Demi Hartry, Kiera Todd, Tasha Brown and Lily Bennet. NAPA holds regular auditions for people wanting to join and more information can be found at www.nationalacademypa. co.uk.

Thanking councillors for rubbish removal I would like to thank Councillors Adam Monk, Brian Mead and Roger Hutchinson. For the past 12 months and more there have been a fridge freezer and loads of black bags outside the chemist on Filton Ave opposite our house. I have been in touch with various departments at the council but had nothing done until I spoke to Councillor Brian Mead. He then reported it to Councillor Adam Monk and Councillor Roger Hutchinson. We arrived home this week to find its all been taken away. This has certainly restored faith in out local councillors Many thanks to all concerned, and Brian Freeguard. Byron Jones

Concerns over council’s finances We are grateful to Cllr Bill Moore for bringing these issues (regarding Filton Town Council finances) to our attention. Whatever happened to ‘transparency’ ? Surely town councillors are elected to work in the best interests of Filton and its residents. Unfortunately there are a few with their own agendas, but nevertheless they should all be working together for the good of the community, regardless of their political views, instead of squabbling amongst themselves. If only more residents showed concern by attending town council meetings, (only one evening per month), they might realise what is happening. Town councillors are volunteers, but why has this situation been allowed to escalate to such a serious level? Pat and Brian Smith

Morrisons like to keep things local With the Morrisons’ store now open in Filton it has brought a well-known family business to the town. Being of Northern origin I am well aware of the store’s original beginnings – a store on Bradford’s market! I am also aware of other features through a discussion I had with the Cribbs Causeway store manager whilst undertaking an assignment as a “Post” columnist for Thornbury. I was informed that whenever

Morrisons’ opened a major store they featured something of prominence within the town they served. “Do you notice anything about our store that is reminiscent of Bristol?” he enquired. At first glance I was stuck for an answer. “What about the two towers in front of our store? He enquired. “Doesn’t it remind you of Clifton Suspension Bridge?” “It certainly does!” I replied. “A striking resemblance.” There were other comparisons, too that I became aware of. “We do not regard ourselves as a supermarket”, he stated. “More a collection of individual providers ... akin to the High Street. Seven years on – looking to future SENIOR E ENTRANSC EXAM 10 & 17 Saturdays January 2015
Juniors Open House
Martin Morris, headmaster of QEH Junior School, says: “QEH Juniors was created seven years ago to provide a unique and enriched educational experience for boys, strongly reflecting the strong ethos and values of the 425-year-old senior school while retaining our own individual identity. “The school recognises that looking to the future is vital so a new feature of QEH Juniors is that, in conjunction with Redland High School, boys can join RHS Infants in readiness to join us later at Year 3. This has already proved popular, with twice the anticipated number of boys signing up.” Stephen Holliday, headmaster of QEH Seniors for 15 years, is justifiably proud of his school and its history as well as the much shorter one of the junior school. “Juniors come to us fully prepared to meet the challenges of the world ahead. I am proud of QEH which, combined with the juniors, is more thriving than ever with 675 boys aged seven to 18.
“Along with being the top performing day school in Bristol, QEH today is firmly among leading academic schools nationally. Most senior boys go to their first-choice of top universities or medical schools, including 10 per cent to Oxford and Cambridge.” Mr Morris and Mr Holliday agree that record results, year on year, are part of the much greater package that they offer to boys in preparing them for future life. They believe in the importance of good values, producing the young men with opinions, who know themselves, who respect and help others. New link with top-class gymnastics club Hawks The prestigious Bristol gymnastics club which helped Claudia Fragapane to win four Commonwealth Games gold medals has formed a unique partnership with a local secondary school.
Bristol Hawks Gymnastics Club now offers weekly sessions at Orchard School Bristol with students benefiting from the international-standard coaching

provided by the club. The school says the coaching sessions are already having an impact both for PE students and youngsters who dream of taking their gymnastics further. Head of sport Lea Pemberton-Heard said: “We are thrilled to be working with Bristol Hawks who have been the premier gymnastics club in the region for some time now, producing a string of champions. “Giving our students the access to such top-level coaching has been inspiring and the results are clear to see in their improved performance.” Hawks coaches run “block” sessions with different year groups at Orchard, with children from Years 7-11 – both boys and girls – benefiting. Bristol Hawks is a family business which launched in Bristol in 1992 and since then has produced top-quality gymnasts at local, national and international level. James May, Bristol Hawks’ club secretary, said: “Our 20year involvement in gymnastics

in Bristol has come from our passionate belief in the value of our sport as a force for good. Whether as a path to excellence or as a fun leisure activity gymnastics has a lot to offer children. “We look to provide unique opportunities for local children to reach their full potential in the sport of gymnastics and to foster a lifelong healthy involvement in sport. Our partnering with Orchard School has enabled us to provide more of these opportunities locally of which we are immensely proud.” Young entrepreneurs hope to clean up in challenge Year 10 business pupils at Orchard School Bristol have been making sure their teachers’ cars are clean – and raising money for disabled people. Two teams of students from the Horfield school entered the Accumulator Challenge, a nationwide competition run by the Papworth Trust, which will see them take on 180 other schools.
Each team – one boys’ and one girls’ team – was given £50 and their task was to raise as much money as possible, using their entrepreneurial skills. The boys’ team decided on a car wash business, where they cleaned teachers’ cars in the school car park. Local businesses are also being approached for sponsorship. All proceeds will go to the Papworth Trust, which cares for disabled people across the UK. The trust’s award-winning team of rehabilitation experts works with people across Britain who have had a life-changing injury as a result of an accident, trauma or ill health.

Schools unite in new partnership Charborough Road Primary School has formally joined the Olympus Academy Trust - a group of South Glos schools which also includes Abbeywood Community School, Bradley Stoke Community School and Meadowbrook Primary School. The trust aims to bring the four schools together to collaborate for the benefit of all students. Executive headteacher Dave Baker said: “Our role is to oversee the leadership and vision of our member schools and to develop partnerships between them. We will encourage members of staff from our schools to meet together and share best practice, while our students will benefit from access to joint opportunities such as shared learning, trips and events, and working with a wider range of peers and teachers.” In a letter to Charborough Road parents, he continued:
Charborough Road pupils with Nicola Bailey and Dave Baker “I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you formally to The Olympus Academy Trust. I hope that over the next few months we can further develop the strong working relationships that have started to be established between the schools that are
now members of the Trust and that you will find the move to academy status beneficial for your children. “The transition from local authority school to academy means that The Olympus Academy Trust is now the employer of all staff within
its member schools. Over the coming months, the school will benefit from being a member of the Trust by working in a larger partnership of schools whereby we can share expertise, provide mutual support and challenge one another to push for ongoing improvement.” At the start of term, Mr Baker presented a commemorative plaque to Charborough Road headteacher Nicola Bailey to mark the event. She said: “We are very excited about being part of the Olympus Academy Trust. Whilst links between our schools have always existed, we are now enjoying our formal partnership; pupils and staff are already benefiting from shared resources and specialist teaching and facilities. We all share the same aspiration - an outstanding education for the young people in our area.” Pupils received a special bookmark.

Making the grade on national stage Students at Fairfield High School are among the best in the country for exceeding expectations in their GCSEs. The latest Government figures show that students at FHS make better progress than those in other schools, with some gaining a whole grade higher across their best eight subjects. The Department of Education says Fairfield is in the top 15 per cent of schools in England based on Value Added (VA) outcomes. These compare actual grades with what might have been expected given individual starting points. The difference produces the VA score. The overall figure for the group that took exams at FHS in summer 2014 was 1026, well above the national average of 1000. Disadvantaged students did even better, with the VA score for those eligible for free school meals at 1028.5 against a national average of 988.5 - a whole grade higher than expected – and students with
special educational needs also achieving results well above the national average. The statistics come from the DfE’s online report to schools. Fairfield’s head teacher Cat Mangham, pictured, said the excellent outcomes showed that the school’s emphasis on meeting the needs of each individual student was paying off. “These results are an important milestone in our determination to become an outstanding school,” she said. “They show that our ethos of high expectations and aspirations is helping students of all abilities to make rapid progress. “The standards our students have reached when they start with us at age 11 give an indication of what they might achieve by the time they leave five years later. But by supporting and guiding them, we are able to help many young people exceed those levels.”

Academy announces link between students and Royal Navy engineers Students at Stoke Gifford’s Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy will be putting what they’ve learned to the ultimate test in a range of projects designed by Royal Navy engineers. The BTE Academy has joined a small group of colleges that are affiliated to the Royal Navy. As a result, students will visit naval facilities and get careers advice from navy professionals with the chance to get first-hand information on what a career in the navy is like. They will also participate in the Young Engineers RN UTC Engineering Challenge, a task which involves designing and building a remote-controlled vessel to recover and remove floating and submerged items, which would be used in humanitarian situations.

Residents appoint new management company for site
Residents at Cheswick Village in Filton have won a six-month battle to appoint new property management agents. They have switched the management of the 900-home site to Downend-based BNS Property Management to provide services at the site such as maintenance of open spaces. Cheswick Village resident Sejal Hampson said: “All together this took around four months of our time, blood, sweat and tears but it was worth it all. I’m proud of what we have achieved as it is notoriously difficult to remove managing agents. We even had people in a similar situation to ours travelling from London to find out how we were doing it! “We also had a say in appointing the new managing agents and I must say appointing a local Bristol company has been a great decision. “BNS have been the instigators of great change for many people at Cheswick who can now enjoy their homes and community. We’ll be forever grateful!” BNS Management, run by brothers Andrew and Ian Simmonds, took over the site from January 1. Andrew Simmonds said: “Cheswick is our largest development to date and we’re delighted to be able to get stuck into such an exciting project in Bristol.” Cheswick Village will include shops, a primary school, district centre and care home when it is completed this year.
Keep Cheswick tidy with CLIPS
Residents can help keep Cheswick tidy by joining a series of litter picks throughout the year. Cheswick Litter Pickers Society, or CLIPS, is holding tidy-ups on the first Sunday of every month – the next on March 1 – and will provide litter-picking sticks, and hoops for rubbish bags. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and some rubbish bags and meet CLIPS at The Green at East Fields, The Bowery at 11am.
Pupils at Wallscourt Farm Academy read to each other during Read Aloud Day
Students share reading skills with younger pupils Wallscourt Farm Academy held a “Read Aloud” Day to celebrate the progress of some of its young readers. Some of the children at the primary school in Cheswick Village, which opened in 2013, have been taking part in the Reading Recovery programme since September and have done so well that they are able to read stories to younger pupils. One of the aims of the new school is to develop an intergenerational reading community. Residents from the

neighbouring Beaufort Grange care home have been into Wallscourt Farm to share stories, as have students from UWE Bristol. The school and UWE have already established a book club and students came in to read with 50 children at a reading café event. Family reading sessions have been held over the year, including a bedtime story time to celebrate World Book Day. Wallscourt Farm, which is part of the Cabot Learning Federation, has a lead reading teacher to support pupils aged
five and six who need some support with their independent reading. Research shows that intensive intervention at this stage helps prevent difficulties later. The well-established national programme, in which Bristol is a leading light, provides daily half-hour catch-up sessions. Principal Susie Weaver said: “Our children who have been having Reading Recovery have made amazing progress. “We are celebrating their success and encouraging them to read to children in Oak Learning Zone.”

Sometimes it seems that Bristol has again been split in two, this time by a council that parachutes in expertise from elsewhere to promote our city’s status as Green Capital while ignoring the local talent of its citizens, and blows thousands on the nonsense of fake grass and trees in Park Street, a stone’s throw from Brandon Hill. (Hardly very green.) Meanwhile, Show of Strength, along with b-Creative, Bristol Ensemble and Poetry Can, have lost all their modest council funding. It took Brunel, an incomer, to bridge the great divide 150 years ago. Now we have another, and maybe it’s time our mayor reconsidered how best to support the arts, and the interests of those Bristolians who practise them.

such as the attempted suicide of Sarah Ann Henley (you know, the jilted Victorian woman whose voluminous skirts filled with air and parachuted her onto the muddy river bank) preceding the completion of the bridge, made me concerned that anyone unfamiliar with its lore and stories might be irredeemably confused. But for all that, it’s a gutsy show, and with performers from theatre company Show of Strength, Circomedia and the Suspended Voices Choir – a cast which seemed to be of the clay of Bristol itself – you’d have to have a heart of Avon Gorge limestone not to be captivated by its exuberance. Perusing the list of financial supporters in the programme, I spotted a shocking omission.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the 150th anniversary celebrations of the opening of the Clifton Suspension Bridge had culminated with December’s firework extravaganza, but just over a month later, along comes this baggy and at times slightly exasperating celebration of our most famous landmark and the “little giant” whose vision and drive brought it into being. For the sentimentalist, the idea of staging ACH Smith’s play in the Passenger Shed at Temple Meads was inspired. More practically, the acoustics aren’t great and this meant it was occasionally difficult to hear what was going on. Moreover, the way the action jumped back and forwards through time, with episodes

People in Filton are being asked if they could spare some time to become a “buddy” to someone whose life is affected by cancer. Macmillan runs a project called Macmillan Bristol Buddies and now wants to develop the service in South Gloucestershire. Volunteers help out in practical ways, such as light housework, gardening, or shopping and, importantly, provide invaluable company, either to someone with a cancer diagnosis or their carer. Volunteer Buddy Colin Willshire from Filton said: “It is really rewarding volunteering with Macmillan, I feel like I am making a real difference to someone.” He added: “Sometimes it is practical things like helping sort out paperwork and mail and with someone else it was just some company and having a chat.” Contact Piers Cardiff on 07866 202537 or email bristol buddies@macmillan.org.uk. www.wayaheadhair.co.uk

You may have seen articles in the press recently about local cases of a disease called leptospirosis in dogs. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease which dogs can contract after exposure to urine from other infected animals (usually rodents), and for this reason it is most likely to be picked up when dogs are in/drinking from still or slowmoving water sources. It is a typically uncommon disease, and can be hard to diagnose in its early stages. However, it can be potentially fatal, causing liver or kidney failure if left untreated. In

addition, leptospirosis is transferable to humans. At Vets4Pets Filton, we vaccinate against the two common strains, and have done for many years. It has become apparent that these new cases may be caused by strains of leptospira that we haven’t seen in the UK before. Therefore, Vets4Pets Filton has decided to start administering the newer vaccination which protects against four strains of the disease, including the one that has been isolated from the locally infected dogs. There is a slightly altered regime for giving this new vaccine, so we may ask you to bring your dog back for a second injection four weeks after their usual booster – but this will be free of charge. If you feel your dog is at high risk (perhaps they swim a lot or are regularly walked on wet or boggy ground), but they are not yet due their booster, please call the surgery on 0117 969 8400 and we can discuss your dog’s needs with you.

Garden centre’s seasonal offering proves a great ‘getaway’ for club The popular visits by Filton Garden Club have been a real delight during recent months. It has given an opportunity to explore the fine array of truly exotic gardens that adorn the English countryside. Many of the gardens have opened up their hitherto relatively unknown locations that have turned out to be real gems. Some of these “discoveries” have been set well away from Filton involving long coach trips. While pleasant, they have restricted time spent at the venues. England excels in beautiful gardens but when I was invited to accompany the group on their visit to the Highfield Garden Centre it was organiser Brian Smith’s remark “It’s only up the road!” that made me wonder why it had hitherto been missed out. Situated at Whitminster in
Gloucestershire it wasn’t, as you would expect, a blazing exhibit of exotic blooms on a foggy day yet it was a seasonal spectacle in the truest sense. Offering a very wide selection of gifts I give it top marks for presentation. It was more of an Aladdin’s Cave in every respect. A star attraction was Maddie, an exotic parrot. Content with her habitat she has been known to go “walkies” around the centre and nip customers’ noses should they get too familiar. But my “pet of the day” was a lovely brown Labrador. I offered it a biscuit only to find the dog was plastic! An incredible likeness. This garden club visit was indeed an ideal getaway from a busy routine. I met with managing director Jon Mason and discovered he had visited Filton Garden Club on a previous occasion.
Maybe when the sun shines on the floral scene we will visit him again. Douglas Daniels l Top, it was a full house on the coach to Highfield Garden Centre for Filton Garden Club’s visit; above, Maddie the parrot and, right, Doug’s new “pet”

Travel Guide “We train our drivers to look out for cyclists, and to anticipate what they, and other road users, will do. However, cyclists can help themselves be seen by making sure they use lights and wear high visibility clothing especially during low light conditions, dawn, dusk and night time.”

Fashion ... with Amy McQueen Wardrobe staples for every You may think the first signs of spring will be seen in nature – the first new buds in the garden or the slow retreat of dark winter mornings as days start to lengthen. But actually it’s the high street fashion stores that are the front runners when it comes to any change of season. The eternal optimists who run them have been busy filling the windows with bright splashes of colour and outfits we’ll be rushing to wear at the merest hint of sunshine. While it’s too early to wave goodbye to our wintry wardrobes just yet, here are some wise buys to make sure you’ll be a step ahead of any season. Each of the items shown are available at the Mall Cribbs Causeway. l Invest in timeless statement pieces that you wont be sick of next season. A little black dress never goes out of fashion and is perfect for daytime and evening events. l Get your hands on a comfy pair of “go-to” heels that match up with anything. I love these black patent pointed heels as they don’t have too large a heel and would look elegant with any outfit whether it be trousers, long skirt or short party dress and are suitable for any occasion – even dancing! l While high heels are nice, they aren’t always practical, so find yourself a new pair of flats and embrace the comfort. I really like these suede loafers as they’re another classic. However, you just cant go wrong with a pair of lace ups. l Wear nice underwear. You don’t have to have a significant

Dorsay Point Patent Black Heels, £65 from Office other to buy into having a nice array of lingerie. Nice underwear shouldn’t just be an occasion thing, it makes you feel good from the get go, even if it is 7am on a Monday morning doing the school run or sitting in rush-hour traffic on your way to work.

l Don’t get stuck in your ways! I’m not saying you have to buy into every new trend that comes your way, but step out of your comfort zone by perhaps adding a bit more or less colour or sparkle than what you are used to!
