This year’s Filton Festival is being held on Sunday 13th July 2014 It will be at Elm Park Playing fields from 12noon – 5.00pm The town council has decided to continue with a family oriented theme this year and will be again holding the event at the Elm Park Playing Fields in Filton as it proved such a popular venue last year and the year before.

News Filton Flyer rethink in bid to boost numbers

The Filton Flyer bus service route will be changed in a bid to increase passenger numbers.

The service, which runs in Filton Monday to Friday, has been losing £900 a week since its launch before Christmas.

In late June, the service will cut out the outlying stops – Southmead Hospital and Parkway Station – in a bid to make it more attractive.

The service will now run four times a day on a one-hour route starting at Filton College.

Users had complained that the original route did not allow them to complete shopping or appointments since the route was too long, meaning some passengers had to complete almost a whole circuit to get home.

The new route will run at 10am, 11am, noon and 1pm

Labour trio to fight election again

Filton Town Council was told that not enough passengers were using the service for the hospital and Parkway.

Cllr Brian Freeguard said that although passenger numbers were rising month on month, greater volume was needed.

The service was given a grant which makes it sustainable in the medium term but more passengers will be needed long term.

Cllr Anne Kenyon said the service “does not give any cover” for people in Conygre but councillors pointed out that most of Conygre is just a short walk from the pick-up points.

Resident Beryl Brand said she was grateful to councillors for their efforts to organise the service.

Filton Labour Party thas reselected Cllrs Roger Hutchinson, Adam Monk and Ian Scott to be the Labour candidates for the South Gloucestershire Council elections next May. The party recently began selections across the district.

Cllrs Scott and Monk will be seeking their second terms on the council while Cllr Hutchinson will be seeking his fifth.

Following selection they said: “We believe that over the past three years we have formed a good team, representing Filton with our combined knowledge of the town and the council.”

Town assembly date The Annual Town Assembly for Filton has been convened for Tuesday, May 27 at 7pm in the Pavilion, Elm Park, Filton, chaired by Cllr Darryl Collins.

The St Andrews Methodist Youth Centre Easter Fayre and ‘The Mane Event’ took place on April 12th.

The money raised was split 50/50 between the youth centre and ASDA’s Tickled Pink cancer charity.

The fun-packed family afternoon included games, raffle, tombolas, gift stalls, and refreshments as well a hair cutting event.

Children from local schools designed colourful Easter eggs and 3 lucky children won large chocolate eggs.

In the ‘mane event’ hair salon set up on the day 11 lovely people aged 9-44 donated at least 7” of their hair (with 3 brave souls having their heads completely shaved!) for the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for children with cancer. Rebekah Short, our youngest hair donator at age 9, said she was very excited and happy that another little girl would be able to smile thanks to her hair being made into a wig.

Three kind-hearted hairdressers, Liz from ‘Liz Ward Mobile Hairdressing’, Jackie from ‘Contemporary Hair by Jacqueline Jane’ and Gemma from ‘Flawless Mobile Hairdressing, Tanning & Nails’ gave up their Saturday afternoons to plait, chop, re-style and shave hair and give the guy and gals a nice new look. The event raised over £700 for the youth centre and Tickled Pink charity. Grateful thanks to local businesses Roger’s Pets, Cara’s Flowers, Mystic Cauldron, Ratepayers Arms, ASDA Filton, and Vue cinemas which donated prizes for the raffle or supported our day, and special thanks to Rhian at Vittels for baking and donating hundreds of yummy cakes for us!

News New volunteer for a full house

by Rebecca Day A long-standing volunteer at local community venue SHE7 is retiring after 40 years – and now the centre is seeking someone new to join the team.

Roy James has not only helped out with the bingo sessions, held every Tuesday and Saturday evening, but also stood as vice chair.

The volunteer replacing Roy will be required to set up the venue for bingo, by preparing tickets, getting drinks ready and setting up the bingo machine, and to call out bingo numbers.

SHE7 (Self Help Enterprise), on Braemar Avenue, has been operating since 1969, providing over-50s with companionship and good food.

The centre was originally set up by two local doctors, who felt older people needed somewhere

to meet and socialise. The pair raised the money to purchase the property.

SHE7, which is funded through donations, is now owned by 94-year-old Ruth Perkins, who joined the centre when it first opened.

Roast dinners with pudding, tea, cheese and crackers are provided every Wednesday and Thursday from 12.30-1.30pm for £2.70, and on Friday evenings, the centre is transformed into a training centre for the North Bristol Amateur Radio Club.

The volunteer would be needed from 6pm on Saturday evenings to set up the venue for bingo, and then from 7-9pm to call out bingo numbers.

News Filton families have their say over new £70,000 play park Filton’s new play area has taken several steps towards completion after around 50 families attended a special presentation last month.

Parents and children had the chance to view designs put forward by two companies Rubicon Play and HAGS SMP - who both presented modern visions for the play area at Elm Park.

Comments received suggested families were happy with many aspects of the designs but one particular option, by Rubicon, received the most support.

The option presented by HAGS for an outdoor gym on the cycle speedway track has also been selected by councillors.

A further meeting with families was due to take place to outline the plans in more detail.

• We like Elm Park. It has ‘traditional’ equipment (though think the see-saw could be a bit more exciting). Don’t scrap it all. Would use Ratepayers for a hot drink in winter and for an ice cream in summer if it was more open to the park.

• Non-slip surfaces. More seating. Larger fenced area for ball games for small children to keep dogs out. More equipment not less.

• Seating - picnic tables. infants’ play area fenced off, where the current play area is situated, along with open play

facilities for older children and an outdoor ‘gym’ setup in the centre of the cycle speedway track.

There are fears over the older children’s area not being fenced off due to dog issues but councillors said this was something they may look at at a later date. The play firm said older children prefer unfenced play areas.

Around £60,000 was released to pay for the new park from developers as a condition of house building in the local area.

Filton Town Council agreed to put up £10,000 on top of the £60,000 developer money.

The town council money is ‘106 money’ left in the coffers from the development of the Combination Ground, Gloucester Road North.

Filton areas affected by high numbers of Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) could be earmarked for special licensing consideration under moves being considered by South Glos Council.

A special meeting of Filton Town Council to discuss the recent town-wide consultation heard that just over 100 people responded to the consultation – but a majority rejected paying £30,000 for a survey which would identify the HMO problem. Residents have repeatedly said that some HMOs attract residents who do not care about the appearance of their tented accommodation, with gardens and pavements often left in a state of disrepair.

Last year there were suggestions to introduce an “Article 4” directive which would give councils powers to limit numbers of HMOs. South Glos councillor Roger Hutchinson told the town council that the authority is looking at

the possibility of creating special licensing conditions in areas which have problems.

This, he said, would mean there may be less need to complete the expensive survey.

South Glos is looking at the issue of licensing as it investigates correlations between anti-social behaviour and HMOs.

News Former head teacher Ron dies, 95 A much loved former Filton head teacher has died, aged 95.

Ron Laidler taught at Charborough Road Primary from 1952 until 1977 and he was present when the school celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2012.

Graham Harris, who organised the reunion, said: “Many from Filton will remember the 85th birthday celebration at Charborough Road junior school in September 2012, attended by around 600 former pupils, teachers and local residents.

“A special visitor was Mr Laidler who attended aged 93 years. He taught at the school for 25 years from 1952 to 1977 and his love for nature and creepy crawlies, especially stick insects, influenced many children who went through the school in this period.”

Peter Hiller (1935-41) meets Peter Sawyer, who left in 1939. Mr Hiller remembers desks with lids, an occasional caning but a wonderful atmosphere. He also recalled Mr Sawyer beating him in the 100 yards race!

Many teachers and other staff gave up their Saturday to provide a much needed helping hand on the day, ensuring that the car parking was managed carefully and to answer questions about the school

today. A particular feature which completed the successful day and was enjoyed by all were the refreshments, served by school volunteers in the library, including two large 85th birthday cakes.

Many former pupils sent their memories to the school and organisers and provided the opportunity for a Memory

book of quotes to be on display.

However, these memories included the less pleasant side of school life for some, as well as more enjoyable times such as the school plays, including Alice in Wonderland and the Pied Piper that were performed by various classes, the Christmas parties and the jumble sales. News ‘Good to be part of the community’

by Rebecca Day After years of working in a residential home, Sibi Mathews has decided to take the plunge by setting up new general store in Filton – Eden.

Located in Gloucester Road North, he says that the store has so far received considerable interest, and good support from the local community.

Sibi, 36, from Bentry, said: “There has been lots of appreciation from local traders, and it’s good to be a part of a happy and friendly community.”

Eden, which stocks a wide range of essentials, from household items and stationery, to frozen and tinned foods, opened to the public on Thursday, April 17.

The store also prides itself on being “continental”, selling both Indian and English foods.

More items are due to be received in the coming week, including fresh fruit and

vegetables, and fresh bakery items. Eden is open seven days a week, from 6am-9pm.

Volunteer call for readers

South Gloucestershire Library service, including Filton Library, is looking for volunteers to help children do the Summer Reading Challenge 2014. The theme this year is Mythical Maze and children are challenged to read six books to collect their very own medal and certificate.

Over 7,000 children in South Gloucestershire took part in Creepy House, the 2013 Summer Reading Challenge, and volunteers supported the children taking part by listening to them talk about their books and helping at the activities in the library.

Tim, aged 18, from Filton explained why he got involved, ‘Volunteering for the summer reading challenge was a fantastic way to give something back to a community I have benefited so much from. It was the summer reading challenge that got me and my family ten years ago to regularly use the library.”

Being a Summer Reading Challenge volunteer is also a great opportunity for young people to get new skills and experience for their CVs. Area forum date The next round of Area Forum meetings takes place this month, with the Southern Brooks meeting, which affects Filton, on Tuesday 13 May, 7pm, at Bradley Stoke Community School, Bradley Stoke The forums give South Gloucestershire residents an opportunity to get involved in decisions that affect their communities.

All Area Forum meetings include an open session for

Retailer confirms move and 20 jobs at new store

by Rebecca Day Morrisons has confirmed that it will be occupying one of the units at the new shopping complex on Gloucester Road North – bringing with it 20 new jobs.

The development will be in place of the Texaco garage which was demolished in April. It is understood that in its place will be four to five units, including a Morrisons local.

The store is set to open by the end of this year.

Filtonvoice has also been informed that there could be a Starbucks coffee shop at the site.

Morrisons development executive Simon Finlay said: “We are delighted to bring a Morrisons M local store to Filton and are working closely with the developer, Malthurst Petroleum Limited, to open the store by the end of this year.

Volunteers urged to bid for grants

Grants of up to £3,000 are available to voluntary groups in Filton to benefit the community.

The South Gloucestershire Council funding is available to groups to develop specific projects and provide activities that meet local needs.

Projects can cover a range of areas, including arts and culture, sport, children and play, community safety, developing communities, supporting vulnerable people to promoting equality and tackling poverty.

Grant applications can be made until the closing date on Monday, June 2, and help with applications is available.

MP praises team for nomination Jack Lopresti MP visited Rolls-Royce in Filton to meet the engineering team that has just been nominated for the MacRobert Award for their work in the development of the LiftSystem.

The LiftSystem provides the unique short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capability for the world’s first supersonic vertical take-off jet, the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter. The team in Bristol has played a big part

in the LiftSystem’s development, building on their STOVL knowledge from the Pegasus engine that powered the Harrier.

Mr Lopresti said: “Huge congratulations to the local team on their nomination. Yet again our Aerospace industry in Filton is leading the way with state-of-the-art technology. The MacRobert Award is one of the most prestigious awards in this sector and the competition is fierce.”

Residents have responded to a letter in last month’s Voice from ‘Nick’ which suggested Filton’s community garden was a waste of taxpayers’ money and not well used

Garden team has transformed area

I found Nick’s comment to be quite sad. I have watched the community garden take shape over the past year or so, and heard and seen the committee, all of whom are local residents, all of whom are volunteers, many of whom are elderly, working together to fundraise and completely transform the area of the field that was once untouched

and unused. I don’t know when he’s walking through it but I see many people using it and go there myself almost weekly whereas I would never have used that area previously.

I don’t believe much “tax payers’ money” was used on the garden - much of it has been completely fundraised by the committee - and I think well done to them.

It’s easy to sit back and say something has been a waste of time and effort when he’s

obviously done nothing towards it, nor spoken to the people involved who have had enormous amounts of satisfaction, pleasure, and learned the benefits of ‘growing and working together’ with others in the community.

More of this should be encouraged in the area, not slated when people actually do something good for the area. It makes the area look welcoming and inviting to all those cars sitting at the traffic lights and who knows how many people it

My experience and that of others is that people are sitting on the benches, they are having their lunch, tea or picnics and they are enjoying looking at the beautiful spring flowers.

The garden is developing with the recent planting of a Fernery and hedging and shrubs along the A4174 and dentist boundaries. Shortly the three local schools will be planting up their flower beds and we will commence work on the edible garden for which the bed has been dug ready for preparation and planting. Furthermore St Andrew’s Youth Club will soon be constructing a bug hotel, with aspirations for the future of a Bandstand and a meadow area the garden will continue

Councillors need to make cuts

I am outraged at the introduction of £36 a year to have our green bin collected! Just as we enter the summer months and start to cut our lawns the council remove a much needed service.

To read in your paper Labour councillor Hutchinson try to blame “savage” cuts is preposterous. We pay for 3 Filton South Gloucestershire councillors. If Labour are representing local people, where

are their cuts to help Filton?

The three councillors accept annual allowances exceeding £30,000 per year plus expenses.

If they reduced to one, it would fund over 500 homes receiving recycling services.

Cllr Hutchinson’s cycle track in Filton, which cost hard up Filton people £50,000 and lays dormant and weed ridden, would have funded over 1,300 homes receiving recycling green bins for another year. Filton council have voted to continue to flog the money losing Ratepayers Arms, at a potential loss of £15,000!

This money could easily be used for a better purpose but the Labour councillors continue to fund their watering hole at a loss to us all. It’s our pub so where’s the Filton referendum on if we want to invest in a loss making pub any more?

As democratically elected representatives we have to do all we can to make sure that Filton gets a good deal.

We opposed the redesignation of the airfield for development and even moved votes to this effect at South Gloucestershire Council meetings. On every occasion we were voted down by Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors. With only 15 of the 70 members, we did not have the strength of numbers to amend this decision. That is democracy, not hypocrisy.

We now have to face the reality of the situation, unwelcome though that is. We are doing our job by getting involved and making the case for jobs, community facilities and transport. We know too well that developers will try to get away with as little community investment as possible as this eats into their profit margins. They are getting strong support for this from the

Tory-led government, which has changed planning rules in their favour and is about to exempt developers from the need to provide any affordable element in developments under 10 units – hardly the response we need to the national housing crisis.

Mr Eames also raises the green bin charges. We have to remind readers that South Gloucestershire Council’s budget is reducing by £80 million over this decade and core services will be cut or charged for because the council cannot balance its books in any other way. Labour councillors will take the tough decisions that will protect the long term interests of residents.

Some dog owners just don’t care On Easter Sunday I was in Monks Park when a chap came in with a small brown dog. Wearing a grey hoodie with a black jacket on top he was pushing a small pushchair with one hand and texting or reading on his mobile phone in the other. His dog ran out into the grass and did his business.

The chap hadn’t noticed (for obvious reasons) so I called out “Your dog’s just had a ****”. He turned and glanced at the dog and me then turned back to his mobile and carried on walking out of the park. So now I know what these irresponsible people who don’t give a damn look like.

I had imagined they might have some kind of problem, like unnaturally short arms for example, so that when they bend over,they simply can’t reach the dog poo. But no, it turns out they look just like you or me. I hope that when his child grows up and goes to play in the park, coming home having stepped in dog poo, he chuckles and with a smile says to himself “Cuh, dog-owners, eh, what can you do?!”

Hospital set for big day

by Rebecca Day Staff moving into the new Brunel building at Southmead Hospital have been given the chance to familiarise themselves with their new wards.

Training has also been provided on how to use the new equipment before patients start moving in during May. The Brunel building was handed over to North Bristol NHS Trust by developers l Bosses at the North Bristol NHS Trust are being urged to disclose how many parking spaces staff have been allocated at the new Southmead Hospital site.

Charlotte Leslie, MP for Bristol North West, requested the information after a story in the Bristol Post revealed “hundreds” of medical staff were to leave their jobs due to lack of parking.

However, a spokesperson at the trust has reassured staff that additional parking spaces will be available.

In the meantime, the trust is managing with some on-site and off-site park and ride facilities.

Simon Wood, director of facilities at the trust, said: “We will consider any individuals’ particular circumstances.”

The Post reported that 400 of the 2,000 employees currently working at Frenchay Hospital have been offered a parking permit, allowing them to park at Frenchay and then hop on a park-and-ride bus.

Whistle-blowers told The Post that staff were facing early rises to make their shifts, and that the allocation of passes appears “totally random”.

Ms Leslie said: “I want this to be a hospital where whistle-blowers’ concerns are heard and acted upon.”

Carillion on March 27, and now the new hospital is being equipped ahead of the big move.

Representatives from the firms supplying equipment have been on hand to explain how to use the facilities, including the new pneumatic tubing system, which will deliver samples to different parts of the Southmead site, and the automatic guided vehicles – robotic devices for carrying waste and linen.

Sue Nutland, from the trust’s development directorate, said that people felt “confident” in what they had been shown.

The first patients will move into the building week beginning May 12. The emergency department will move from Frenchay in the early hours of May 19, and the rest of the wards will follow afterwards, with the Brunel building due to fully open

by May 28.

Jack backs air ambulance bid Filton MP Jack Lopresti will ask Chancellor George Osborne to meet volunteers from the Great Western Air Ambulance, he said, as he backed the charity’s bid for £1 million of funding.

It was revealed recently that some of the fines imposed on financial institutions in the wake of the Libor rate-fixing scandal would be used by the Government to support the country’s air ambulances, and the Filton-based organisation has applied for a share of this pot.

Mr Lopresti met with the charity’s chief executive John Christensen to discuss how he could help the bid and said: “I fully support GWAAC’s application and I would like to discuss it with Mr Osborne to express my support and press the case for the money to be granted.”

The money would go towards the charity’s day-to-day operations, which are funded by donations and cover an area inhabited by 2.1 million people. The volunteers are also fundraising to replace their aging helicopter.

During the meeting with Mr Christensen, Mr Lopresti also revealed he would be running the Bristol Half Marathon this September in aid of the local air ambulance.

He said: “I am really looking forward to running the Bristol Half Marathon later in the year, and knowing that I am doing it for such a worthy cause will make it just that little bit easier to get round!

“I couldn’t run it last year for health reasons but it is such a great day and I will enjoy getting round again.”

Charborough Road Primary

Pupils at Charborough Road Primary School took part in a Maths investigation day.

Mixed age groups of children were given the challenge of designing a theme park, on a budget. As they got going, they realised that this was not as easy as it seemed!

At the end of the day, everyone assembled in the hall, and shared their maths learning experiences. It was a fun day!

Abbeywood Community School

During the last week of Term 4 we commissioned two Ofsted inspectors to carry out a two-day “health check” Ofsted-style inspection to give us an independent review of current standards at Abbeywood Community School. The feedback received gives us clear evidence of our many strengths and the impact of our school

improvement work. It also highlights areas we should focus our energies upon for further improvement. The timing was useful as we know that Ofsted will be coming between now and December to conduct a full “section 5” inspection and this provided a useful opportunity for staff and students to get used to the process as well as to receive feedback about how to improve further.

The school is in a strong position with last summer’s GCSE and A level results being above National Average on nearly all headline figures.

Our current Year 11 students are predicted to make even better progress and inspectors felt confident about the reliability of our predictions.

A highlight of the food festival will be an attempt to set a World Record for the most diverse fruit salad with weird and wonderful fruits brought from across the globe.

Flyers exit league in dramatic style The Bristol Flyers’ season came to a dramatic end as the team played their final game in Division 1 of the English Basketball League before their move to the top flight of the game.

The team, who are based at SGS College’s WISE Campus in Stoke Gifford, were defeated 65-57 at the hands of the Essex Leopards in the first round of the playoffs at the Brentwood Centre on April 13.

As the Flyers bow out of the English Basketball League, preparations now begin in earnest for their move up to the top tier of British Basketball (BBL) next season.

Flyers head coach Andreas Kapoulas said: “It has been an up and down season for us and that was evident in our playoff game.

We played well for most of the game and went to the last quarter

leading ahead. However, in the last five minutes we did not execute on the offensive end and allowed Essex to go on a run.”

The Bristol coach added: “As a coaching staff we are extremely proud of the effort all our players have shown.

“We turned around a very difficult season and finished seventh in the league with a winning record and a playoff spot. We have had a great run in Division 1 the last seven years and now officially the focus can turn to the next season.”

Aspiring footballers in Filton will have the exclusive chance to train with coaches from Bristol City FC as part of a new squad.

The club has teamed up with SGS College’s Bristol Academy of Sport to offer students specialised coaching with the possibilty of representing the club competitively.

The new development squad will train under the watchful eye of coaches from the club and the college and Bristol City legend and head of youth recruitment, Brian Tinnion, will be in charge of player selection for the squad.

News Garden club takes a walk on the wild side with visit When Filton Garden Club visited Paignton Zoological Gardens recently they made a brave departure (venture) from their usual routine, writes Douglas Daniels.

Departing from the quaint and generally established country gardens they chose to take members for a “walk on the wild side”. A trip through the jungle wouldn’t be far from the mark.

Appealing as they usually do to a capacity attendance the journey down the M5 was speedy and convenient with a stop-off at Exeter.

I don’t think the group expected luxurious blooms.

Instead they were treated to an exotic array of jungle growth that really could have no equal.

As I looked out over a delightful lakeland scene with a central island I was beset with a mass of pink flamingos. Added to that a couple of love-making storks. There at the beginning and still at it as I left!

There was something surprising around every corner.

Brochures stated you “needed a day to visit it”. More like a week to me.

Personally I was enraptured by a couple of gorillas lazing in the spring sunshine. Likened to grandad after his Sunday lunch!

giraffes to slimy reptiles slinking around foliage it was all there at this Paignton jungle.

True garden enthusiasts will at least have been educated about growth in tropical climes and the animals that call it home, such as lizards, reptiles and even crocodiles. They were all here.

And for those unable to plod around there was the “Jungle Express”. Filled to capacity, every trip.

We couldn’t stay for feeding time.

Perhaps as well. A lonely lion in an enclosure was focusing on me!

Pat and Brian Smith certainly came up trumps with something different. Their next visit is to Rosemoor Gardens, Devon on July 9.

Prescription service after closure Day Lewis chemist, at Filton Park, is offering to collect and deliver prescriptions free of charge for former customers of Hobbs pharmacy, which closed last month.

Prescriptions will be collected from the customer’s surgery, dispensed at the chemist, and then delivered to their door step.

Anyone is able to use the service.

The chemist is also willing to deliver items sold in store.

Julie Tucker, dispenser at Day Lewis, said: “All customers need to do is phone up, or pop into the shop, and we’ll do the rest for them. It’s particularly useful for those who find it difficult to leave their homes.

“We welcome any new customers and our drivers are really friendly. We have had quite a few customers coming up from Hobbs, looking for a new pharmacy.”

Hobbs was brought out by local pharmacy, Hayfield, nine months ago. One customer said that the closure of Hobbs was a “sad loss” to Filton. l The pharmacy is hosting a “fun day” on May 22.

There will be a raffle, cake sale and refreshments.

A beautician will also be doing manicures and pedicures, and eyebrow-shaping.

Money raised for the event will be going to local community centre, SHE7, and a local playgroup.

Last year, the chemist raised just under £1,000 for Southmead Hospital’s baby unit.

South Gloucestershire has received initial support* from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Know Your Place digital mapping project.

Know Your Place enables people in Filton to view digital maps of a locality through the ages and see how an area has changed. Development funding of £52,300 has been awarded as part of HLF’s initial support to enable the partnership to progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date.

The project will be working with local councils, community groups and the British Library to bring historic maps together in a single regional online portal. The project will identify all the maps that relate to the region and then allow people to search them through a digital portal. The Know Your Place project will extend the digital mapping project which has been successfully introduced by Bristol City Council to cover other local councils including South Gloucestershire.

To keep your motivation, freshen up your routine – ask one of the gym staff to write you a new programme or suggest new exercises, or you could try out a new class, or exercise outdoors. Run, cycle or walk different routes, distances and speeds to keep your body guessing and adapting.

News Champion Andy joins elite squad Airbus employee Andy Lewis is celebrating after becoming the British Elite Paraduathlon Champion at the British Duathlon event in Corby, Northamptonshire.

Andy, who works in the procurement team at Filton, was sponsored by Airbus for his sporting activities. Only the most elite athletes were invited to take part and to win gold Andy had to complete a gruelling course involving a 5k run, a 20k bike ride and a 2.5k run. He proved himself to be the fastest and most talented competitor in his class.

Andy is a part of a small group of athletes worldwide to compete with an above-knee amputation.

He has been training with a new “blade” running leg and working with experts from the University of Gloucestershire’s high-tech Performance Lab.

Following his victory in Corby, Andy has had confirmation from the British Triathlon team that he has been awarded a place with their National Paratriathlon Development squad.

He said: “They watched my performance in Corby and said they could see the potential for me to go even faster with the correct training.

“Now I need to train even harder to make this happen. They have put me forward for a Sports Aid Foundation Award and I’ll also be joining the South West Academy’s training programme for Olympic athletes.”

Support young readers at library Filton Library is looking for volunteers to help children take part in the Summer Reading Challenge.

Volunteers will get involved in a variety of activities, from talking to children about the books they are reading to helping with the summer activities. The closing date for applications is June 16. Volunteers must be aged 14 or over.

Eighteen-year-old Tim Moller, from Filton, said: “Volunteering for the Summer Reading Challenge was a fantastic way to give something back to a community I have benefited so much from. There was just some time for a spot of last-minute coaching before the judging procedure was explained, our four mentors warmed up the audience, and the audience got the chance to practise making as much noise as possible. (As it happens, they were very, very good at this.)

And then we were off, all

16 teams, with names such as Dangerous Doughnuts, The Monster Mashers and Word War III, strutting their stuff through four heats and giving an excellent account of themselves.

In the end, Zombie Apocalypse from Whitehall School emerged as winners in a contest which saw the roof raised to a height of about five miles and the sky very definitely kissed, almost into oblivion.

Best of all, the knowledge that 500 impressionable young minds – and hopefully a few older ones as well – would be leaving with a rather different idea of poetry and the limits to which it will take you.

And so to finale of the Bristol Spring Poetry Festival 2014 – the inaugural primary poetry slam, held in the pink and gold serenity of St George’s Bristol.

Upon arrival, all was calm.

Sound and light technicians were doing technical things with sound and light, and the four intrepid poets-turnedmentors who’d gone into four of Bristol’s primary schools to work with their Year 5 pupils in preparation for the day’s event were fine-tuning its organisation. Indeed, there was an almost palpable air of orderly productivity.

Lasting memory of band leader Jim

As members of Filton Twinning Association will shortly be embarking on their visit to twin town St Vallier in France this month, writes Douglas Daniels, some will carry memories of leader Jim Scott, of Filton Concert Brass, who has recently passed away.

Some may recall Filton’s original twinning with the French town, St Vallier, which followed with their return visit to Filton.

Chosen as the band to welcome the French, twinning co-founder, the Late Alderman Eric Smith MBE, decided: “We will put them on the roof of the Filton Swimming Pool ... they’ll go down well there!” Needless to say, we didn’t have to mount a rescue attempt.

Similarly in the town square at Witzenhausen – Filton’s German twinned town – the band played a distinctively patriotic British melody, Land of Hope and Glory, as we all held hands together. Again, it “went down well.”

Instigated by our twinning founders, Filton has established excellent relations with our neighbouring European towns.

Look out for the report of our forthcoming meeting in St Vallier. We are looking forward to a very happy occasion.

Let’s say farewell to our pharmacist

Those who heard of the closure of Filton’s family-owned pharmacy Hobbs expressed their regrets in last month’s Filtonvoice, writes Douglas Daniels.

As a farewell gesture to owner Haston Hobbs – son of the pharmacy’s founder – it has been suggested that a small, informal get-together be held at the Filton Community Centre, Elm Park, on Wednesday, May 21, at 7pm.

Those who regularly partook of Haston’s “take two spoonfuls three times a day!” might like to personally say thank you for a family service so dutifully provided over 78 years.

This farewell is being personally funded. Any help in off-setting the costs would be much appreciated. This could also provide an opportunity to try out the Community Centre’s Foyer Cafe.

Award for charity shows it’s making a difference A charity that supports young people, families and the elderly in Filton and beyond has won an award for its work to measure the difference it is making to the community.

Southern Brooks Community Partnership was named “One to Watch” at the inaugural South West Impact Awards last month, sharing the spotlight with the ss Great Britain Trust.

The partnership runs a range of projects, including supporting young people make the transition into adulthood, helping families, reducing isolation, particularly among the elderly and developing safer, stronger, inclusive communities.

Dame Suzi Leather, chair of the Lankelly Chase Foundation and a former chair of the Charity Commission, who presented the awards, explained: “For a charity, measuring impact is the way to show you are delivering your charitable purpose and is also the way to show commissioners, funders, beneficiaries, supporters, regulators and policy makers that you are making a difference to people’s lives.

“Evidencing impact not only helps organisations improve their services but is likely to make them more sustainable, efficient and effective.”

Police insist loss of Filton station will not affect level of service

By Rebecca Day Police have moved to reassure the public in Filton that the loss of the town’s station will make officers closer to the front line.

Avon and Somerset Police’s “Our Accommodation” project, which involves building a new station in Patchway, aims to improve the constabulary’s performance whilst responding to funding challenges.

The force aims to reduce its portfolio of buildings by at least 36% by 2019.

The Patchway station is set to open over the summer, however a date has not yet been confirmed.

The building, which will replace the existing Filton station in Elm Park, will house 48 cells, a specialist crime investigation team, and an enquiry office for local communities including Filton, Patchway, Bradley Stoke,

and Stoke Gifford. The Filton police station closed in March, but officers have continued to patrol the area from a temporary base at Southmead station, two miles down the road.

It aims to process offenders more efficiently through the criminal justice system; combine custody and investigative functions, releasing police officers back to the streets where they are needed; improve response times by basing specialist teams in more accessible locations; and provide better value for money by improving and consolidating their estate.

Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “Our plans are about reducing the amount of oversized and under-utilised buildings we own and providing the best access for communities.”

A new, free weekly course has been launched to help parents and their children make gradual changes to their eating and activity to help them get fitter, healthier and happier.
