Filton tax rise ... but it could have been more

Filton residents are facing a council tax precept rise of 1.5% next year - around £2.66 per household.

The precept is separate from the main South Gloucestershire council tax and is used to directly fund the town council.

A summer cost scrutiny programme, which identified savings of around six per cent, or £50,000, from the council’s budget, has limited the increase in the precept.

It means that the average Band D household in Filton will be paying around £177 for the Filton precept part of their Council Tax bill.

Among the factors leading to the rise were £10,000 in lost market revenue which had been expected but never materialised.

Jack Lopresti MP You may remember several months ago that I called for anti-social behaviour to be taken more seriously by the local police force. I had been contacted by residents in Filton who were concerned that anti-social behaviour was being allowed to grow and indeed was becoming a daily occurrence in some areas.

Well I’m pleased to tell you that we have made significant process in ensuring that the local police put the appropriate amount of time and energy into tackling threatening behaviour.

My office is now in constant contact with Avon and Somerset Police with whom we have an effective working partnership. I have to say that, in my mind, local policing is improving and this is because local people’s priorities are being considered.

On that note I thought I would tell you about the Government’s Police and Crime Commissioners policy and the elections that will take place in November 2012. The idea is that Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) will aim to cut crime and deliver an effective and efficient police service within their force area.

On the 15 November 2012, for the first time ever, the public across England and Wales will elect a police and crime commissioner who will be accountable for how crime is tackled in their police force area.

To provide stronger and more transparent

accountability of the police, PCCs will be elected by the public to hold chief constables and the force to account; effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.

PCCs will ensure community needs are met as effectively as possible, and will improve local relationships through building confidence and restoring trust. They will also work in partnership across a range of agencies at local and national level to ensure there is a unified approach to preventing and reducing crime.

PCCs will not be expected to run the police. Rather, the role of the PCC is to be the voice of the people and hold the police to account.

I think this is a fantastic policy and will only be of benefit to local residents in our area. In the coming months we will all be given a chance to scrutinise the potential candidates but the job will be suited to a local person who deeply cares about making our communities safer.

As long as you are aged over 18 and are a resident in the Police Force area that you wish to represent you can run for the job and you can find out more about what it means to be a PCC on the Home Office Website.

Anger over car park caravans Filton’s Chamber of Trade has hit out after travellers’ caravans took over more than 10 bays at the Gloucester Road North shoppers’ car park.

Three units were parked across the far end of the car park for several days.

It is understood the vehicles had been using the car park on and off since the summer. The car park, which is run by South Glos, forbids trailers and parking of more than 12 hours at a time.

A spokesman for the Chamber of Trade said: “The carpark is a 12 hour long stay carpark, and these people were residing within the carpark for much longer than 12 hours and sometimes for several days. Customers of local businesses complained about the reduced amount of parking and do not feel comfortable leaving their vehicle unattended in the carpark.”

South Glos Council said it would attempt to negotiate withdrawal based on its policies for the travelling community.

The authority served notices on the vehicles on December 2

but it was December 7 before they moved on.

The council policy states: “The council will strive to balance the interests of local people and the travelling population in the management of unauthorised encampments. The council acknowledges that a nomadic existence is lawful and recognises that it is not a local authority’s role to either endorse or discourage such a lifestyle. This does not mean however that people living a traveller lifestyle should be able to do so without considering potential nuisance or harm that their lifestyle might inflict on others.”

Lights off in Filton?

Street lights could be switched off across Filton for several hours at night under a cost-cutting plan by South Gloucestershire Council.

Approval has already been given for a switch-off on sections of the main A38 between midnight and 5am, starting in April, including the stretch between the Southmead Road roundabout and Filton College.

But the community will be under pressure to sign up for a more wide-ranging scheme – in which more than half the lights in residential areas of Filton could be switched off – as South Glos attempts to reduce its budget for street lighting by £250,000 per year.

The authority has already invited other communities to volunteer for the residential switch-off. However the council needs all neighbourhoods in South Glos to take part if the

savings are to be made and the decision over Filton may ultimately be taken by district councillors.

In the meantime, Filton Town Council will decide if they wish to take part in a consultation scheme over the residential switch-off.

evidence of an inrease in crime or road accidents in areas which have signed up for a switch-off, such as Charfield.

He added that the hours of midnight-5am were chosen since these are seen as the quietest.

If Filton decided to take part in the scheme, work would be done to identify which of the roughly 1,000 lights would be switched off, based on crime hotspots and other concerns.

Some lights would stay on with the rest up for debate.

In answer to Councillor Kieran Hyde’s question, Mr Jenkins ruled out a ‘one light on, one light off’ scheme as it was seen as dangerous for traffic and such schemes also led to disputes among neighbours.

Members of the public expressed concern that elderly people would be reluctant to leave their homes.

Town council chairman Adam Monk said: “At the budget setting meeting the council were congratulated both by residents and the council’s accountant on achieving six per cent savings in less than eight months of the new council so enabling them to propose a reduced precept increase of 1.5 per cent with no loss of services.”

Chair of finance Bill Moore said: “Councillors have been working hard with employees and residents to identify and achieve these savings. We are currently working on a five-year plan, started by this council, which seeks to save further with income generation is at its heart.”

Now talks have begun to explore the possiblity of converting the site into a ‘MUGA’ - a multi-use gaming area, which

and leagues. Councillors heard details of the options at a recent town council meeting and voted to seek quotes to complete the work.

Finance chair Bill Moore backed the plans but warned that the council - in the middle of a cost cutting programme - did not have the funds to support the conversion.

However councillors said they would seek alternative funding or the possibility of backing from local businesses.

It is thought the work could cost in the region of £50,000.

A further option which was explored was the possibility of building high fencing to allow certain games but to leave the surface is it is now.

We range from 9-11 years old and are a mix of boys and girls.

There are lots of things we enjoy doing at Chatterbooks.

We try new books that we wouldn’t normally read, and meet new people. We like making crafts and we sometimes have parties, which are fun. We especially enjoyed the Where’s Wally fancy dress party.

This year Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at St.Teresa’s Catholic Primary School have enjoyed performing the Christmas story to parents and children. The children performed ‘Nativity Rock’ with lots of flair and enthusiasm. The musical included seven toe tapping songs with one song sung as a solo and another featuring kazoo playing sheep. Lots of fun was had, whilst the important message of Christmas was shared.

Ofsted praise

Shield Road Primary head teacher Jim Mepham has been reflecting on the positive remarks from a recent Ofsted inspection.

The inspectors said: • 100% of parents said children enjoy coming to school.

• Pastoral care, community cohesion and pupil behaviour are a strength of the school.

• Attendance has improved.

Father Christmas came for a visit to Charborough Road Primary School on Saturday 3rd December. The children and their families were so pleased to see him and Mother Christmas (who had popped in for a visit too) that they were still queuing 10 minutes before Father Christmas had to leave.

There was a fantastic family atmosphere with many new faces spotted in the crowds this year which was lovely to see. The school hall looked beautiful with the decorations and made extra special with the ‘wishes on a star’ made by each child of the school.

And new for this year was ‘Guess the weight of the (human) turkey’ – well fairy really!

One of the parents Rob Cook dressed up as a Christmas fairy and attracted lots of interest and giggles. The winner received a hamper full of goodies up to the value of approximately £50 which was kindly donated by supersavvyme.

Of course the bazaar would not be complete without our raffle and this year’s prizes were better than ever. The first prize was a Christmas hamper which was a selection of 50 Christmas items donated by parents and families of the school and was won by Florence Clayton.

We would like to thank everyone who supported this event both behind the scenes and to those who visited on the day. The total amount of money raised was approximately £1,500 which is a fabulous increase on last year’s profits and raise’s valuable funds for the school.

Head’s safety fears Filton Hill Primary head teacher Kirsten Lemming says the road chaos outside her school is putting the children’s safety at risk.

Blenheim Drive becomes so congested during drop-off and pick-up times that some drivers mount the pavement to get past other cars. Other parents have been seen parking on the pavement or across residents’ driveways.

Council to take action for several years, without success.

She has suggested a one-way system along the Blenheim Drive but the council will not make it official, saying cars slow down if they come in opposite directions..

She said: This is all very well, but what happens is that cars will mount the pavement and drive along it to pass each other. This is when children are walking to school. The road outside the school is very narrow and residential cars are usually parked opposite the school.

“A few years ago they did put a few extra bollards along the pavement, but there are not enough of them. If I see people mount the pavement or park illegally I do report them.”

She said there was also a problem on Filton Avenue where the school lollypop lady works, with speeding cars posing a threat to safety.

She added: “People still speed along Filton Avenue. I suggested a proper pedestrian crossing, but they will not do this, as there is one by the local shops.”

Abbeywood Community School Students and staff took part in a number of activities during the day to raise money for Children in Need.

A huge Pudsey Bear was covered with coins and students worked really hard to fill him up. A cake sale took place in the atrium during break and lunch time, 6th formers volunteered to do face painting in the atrium while P.E helped to organised a basketball game staff vs students.

A great day was had by all and raised over £460 for the charity. l The school is holding a quiz night, with a licensed bar, on Thursday 19 January, doors open at 7.00 pm with the quiz starting promptly at 7.30 pm. New blows in fight to save Filton airfield The campaign to preserve Filton airfield has been dealt several severe blows after South Glos councillors included the site in a revised planning blueprint.

This means that with homes already in the plan - known as the core strategy - Filton Airfield could end up with as many as 5,500 new homes.

The council has said that if they did nothing, there was a danger even more houses could be built and the authority wants some of the land to be allocated for employment.

Owner BAE Systems wishes to close the airfield next year, a move which has led to campaign groups being set up, with followers saying the airfield does have a commercial potential and that closure will have a serious effect on the areas’s aerospace industry.

Meanwhile, an independent consultant’s report has concluded that the airfield has no commercial future According to the report, it says that the aviation industry would not be adversely affected by its closure.

And a housebuilder has unveiled plans for a huge new housing estate alongside the airfield.

Persimmon Homes has announced it is staging a public exhibition so people living in the area can get to see the plans for the new estate for themselves.

The 138 acre site (55.85

acres) is adjacent to Filton Airfield and forms part of South Gloucestershire Council’s proposed ‘Cribbs/Patchway New Neighbourhood’.

The land at Fishpool Hill is being developed by Persimmon Homes and Ashfield Land.

The latest scheme will see even more dwellings in the area.

Campaigners have already criticised the revised planning blueprint claiming the area has become a “convenient dumping ground” for a large number of extra homes demanded by planners.

In a statement, South Glos Labour said: “In a revision to the Core Strategy, the Council’s 15-year planning framework just published, the new homes supply number for South Gloucestershire is proposed to increase by 4,855 (to 26,435) – with 81% of this additional number to be located on Filton Airfield and the neighbouring Cribbs/Patchway area. Thought for the month with Rev’d Canon Brian Arman, St Peter’s Church, Filton www.filtonchurch.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk In the Bible’s New Testament there are the four great gospels, which proclaim the ‘Good News’ of Jesus’ teaching, crucifixion and resurrection.

Three of them, St. Matthew Luke and John speak also of his birth.

St. Matthew tells us of Joseph’s care for Mary, of her virginity and faithfulness and of Jesus’ decent from David into whose family the Messiah must be born.

St. Luke tells the beautiful story of the Angel’s visitation to Mary, of her willingness to serve God as his chosen one and of the painful and chaotic events that lead to Jesus’ birth in a

cowshed (almost certainly, in fact, a cave) for there was no room at an inn.

We hear also of the Angel’s songs and the coming of the Shepherds – the poorest and least regarded people in society at that time.

Together they all marvel at this wonderful thing that God had done. Of the Christ child asleep on a bed of straw – God’s son in the meanest of all circumstances yet ‘God made man’.

These last words are those of St. John whose beautiful account of God’s great loving creating spirit culminate in Chapter 1 verse 14 with the

immortal phrase ‘And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us’. God’s creative power is his word, which by his divine intent is the means by which all things are made.

The fulfilment of that creative outpouring is Jesus himself.

He is the very ‘word of God’ made human among us whose Glory cannot be diminished, whose light can never be extinguished, whose life is the very life that we lead, the breath that we breath and the love which we all share.

Therefore, may the Life, the Light and the Love of God in Christ our Lord be with us all this Christmas.

St. Peter’s Coffee Shop

Our coffee shop at St. Peter’s has been up and running for 2½ years now, and has become quite a hub of the Filton community.

When we decided to renovate a disused room and transform it into a warm and welcoming coffee shop we had no idea how many people would come in to enjoy a cup of coffee, home made cakes and meet up with friends old and new. It has, however, over these 2½ years become a well-established ‘place to be’.

We are opposite the bank and the post office at Filton Church and people often feel like a coffee and a break while they are shopping. We also have people,

perhaps from other parts of the world, who come back to their roots here in Filton to research family trees or just to meet up again with old friends and neighbours. Other local folk just come in for a chat and a ‘catch up’ with their friends or just to relax with a newspaper.

If you haven’t yet tried us, do pop in and enjoy our excellent filter coffee or maybe a pot of tea in warm, comfortable surroundings. There is always a large selection of freshly baked cakes and we are open Monday through to Friday from 9.30am – 1.30pm. We would really love to see you.

Fields in Trust and Elm park field

In regard to the future safeguarding of the Elm Park, residents are invited to attend a presentation from John Chapman and ‘Fields in Trust’ to be given at the 31st January Filton Town Council meeting.

Fields in Trust is connected to the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge to safeguard hundreds of outdoor recreational spaces in perpetuity for future generations in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee. This can create a legally binding contract which places restrictions on the council who would remain the owner of the site but Fields in Trust would have to approve any disposal of the site or erection of structures or buildings which fall outside permitted use.

Anger over airfield

I am appalled by the prospect of the country losing the aerodrome facilities at Filton - the runway is a national asset.

For many years there have been attempts to discourage general aviation use by outrageous charges and obstacles to the ease of operation.

The grand scale of the Filton runway should be appreciated by the public as an asset and preserved for the intended use.

If it is allowed to be withdrawn in favour of alternative developments it will never be replaced. Rather than covering the area in buildings, the council would do well to encourage aviation by whatever means available.

Story Boules players arrived in Filton for a regional tournament - but a decision was only being made this week over whether or not a charge should be applied for use of the facilites.

The boules courts cost in excess of £10,000 to build and are rarely used, The competition you are commenting on was preorganised so people can easily be pre-notified that there is a charge. I have tennis balls and rackets so can I use them for free please? This is not allowable and there are inconsistent rules that have been set and they should be changed.

Postcode campaign

Message to Mary re: BS7/ BS34 postcode petition.

As co-ordinator, I can assure you that every house in every one of the 31 roads in Filton, South Glos, with a BS7 postcode was covered. We went back many times in order to catch those people who were not home or who did not answer the door.

If you were one of those I’m sorry, but it wasn’t for the want of trying. The overwhelming response we had showed that over 90% of households were in favour, which puts you in the minority anyway.

For your further information, this was instigated at the request of BS7 residents (who are paying higher insurance premiums because of the postcode), and not by the councils.

Dog mess in the park

I have confronted an elderly gent in Monks Park who completely ignored the fact that his dog had done his somewhat solid business near a tree. He claimed he never picked them up near trees because no one goes there.

But of course kids regularly use trees as goal posts in summer!

At least this was a variant on “Oh dear I’ve run out of bags…”

Several of us regular dog walkers pick it all up from our own dogs and bin it, I even take a torch at night and watch the dogs to make sure I clear it up.

Frankly if you can’t clear up after your dog, yes…your dog really does have to poo like the rest of them you know(!), then don’t have a dog I say because you’re not fit to own one.

Club nets £1,200

A group of Bristol accountants have presented a Filton wheelchair basketball club with £1,200.

Members of staff from the Bristol office of Saffery Champness, in Beaufort Road, Clifton, donated the funds to the South West Scorpions Wheelchair Basketball Club, based at Filton College, after raising the money at this year’s Bristol Half Marathon.

Green award for trust

North Bristol NHS Trust has won the Green Champion Award for the NHS at the national Green Apple Awards.

The award was presented to the Environmental Management Unit earlier this week at a ceremony at the House of Commons arranged by the Green Organisation, who reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.

The award was given for the Trust’s Treading Lightly campaign which promotes environmental initiatives such

The money raised will help the volunteer-run club increase the number of young disabled athletes they support in the local area.

David Wragg, partner at the Bristol office of Saffery Champness said: “We’re really proud of our staff for raising such a fantastic amount for charity.”

Boules tournament

Nearly 40 boules players from across the West converged on Filton for round 3 of the winter doubles organised by the Great Western Region of the English Petanque Association, which is being organised this winter after a successful event last year.

The 18 pairs came from as far apart as Bath, Keynsham, Cricklade and Filton. Last winter there were 12 pairs and 2 rounds

of the competition were held at Elm Park as the terrain could just manage to take 6 pistes.

Organiser Roger Hutchinson said: “We thought that we wouldn’t be able to host a round this year as it needs 9 pistes, but the organisers have accepted that we would have 3 pistes on the straights of the cycle speedway track. There was one Filton team playing as the Ratepayers Arms but also another 4 people who play regularly, casually at Elm Park.”

Boules, or pentaque, is a French game played with metal balls, with the aim to get your ball closer to a small target ball. l Filton Town Council is currently debating whether or not boules players should be charged to play, with some arguing that boules should be subject to the same charges as other sports.

Boules supporters argue that matches bring revenue to the Ratepayers’ Arms.

Filton resident pass Filton residents are able to benefit from the use of the sports and leisure centre at reduced rates as recognition that the centre is subsidised from the town council precept, which only Filton residents pay. The pass can be obtained by taking a passport-sized photograph and proof of Filton residency, such as a utilities bill, to the leisure centre reception desk.

Children’s activities The centre runs 5 different types of birthday parties, it offers an indoor soft play area and outside there are two 5 aside/ tennis courts and a children’s play park, a BMX track, a cycle speedway track and a new skateboard park

Dolphin Pool The 25 metre main pool was extensively refurbished in 2002, with the addition of a learner pool and improved changing facilities. The pool is open 7 days a week for public swimming.

Activities include: Aqua Fit Sessions, Water Walkerz Fun Sessions (walk on water without getting wet), Adult Improver and Learn to Swim, and 50 Plus Sessions. A qualified swim teacher is on hand to give advice and free tuition.

Also, Dinky Dolphins & Pre-School Swimming Lessons - games, music and play with a qualified ASA parent and child teacher.

The Ratepayers Arms The Ratepayers Arms is run as a “local” community/family sports bar with activities like skittle and darts but also chess etc, as well as a large screen for showing Sky Sports events. The bar boasts real ales, plus the normal range of lagers, wines, spirits and soft drinks. The Bar area and function hall are available for hire where weddings, Christenings, leaving parties and funerals can be catered for.

The steward John Beese and his wife Heather serve a range of hot and cold foods to order. The Ratepayers is situated behind the Dolphin Swimming Pool at Filton Sports and Leisure Centre.

St Andrew’s Methodist Church, “Messy Church”, 4pm - 6pm Ballet Bristol Gala Review Ballet Bristol got the festive season off to a sparkling start at the Filton College Olympus Theatre in Stoke Gifford.

Celebrating their 3rd anniversary, this not-for-profit community group put on a professional gala with highlights from many well known classical ballets. The performance was completely sold out and involved more than twenty dancers and over a hundred costumes.

Act One opened with excerpts

from The Sleeping Beauty and, among the fairytale characters, Nick Piggott’s Puss in Boots was wonderfully feisty. The first act concluded with a selection of dances from Coppélia, the story of a life-size dancing doll. Holly Stubbs’ solo performance of Prayer was beautifully lyrical and expressive, as was her Temple Dancer solo from La Bayadère in the third act.

Throughout the programme were a number of spectacular pas de deux, duets for a man and

a woman, which were rewarded with cheers from the audience.

Act Two included one from the Spanish ballet Don Quixote was danced by Ellie Wright and Keith Prested with great energy.

Part of Ballet Bristol’s ethos is to provide opportunities to perform for dancers of all abilities and the gala included group dances for those with less experience. The gala drew to a close with the traditional Christmas ballet, Nutcracker. www.balletbristol.co.uk

The Christmas tree is perhaps the most recognised symbol of Christmas in our homes, but who first decided to bring a tree inside?

The origin of the Christmas tree isn’t exactly clear, but is certainly rooted in ancient times.

Many ancient cultures revered evergreen trees that stayed green throughout winter while other trees were bare.

The evergreens served as a reminder that winter would pass and the land would once again be fruitful.

In ancient Britain, Druids saw evergreens as symbols of eternal life and placed branches over doors to ward off evil spirits.

The people of Scandinavia and Germany were the first to bring actual trees indoors as a symbol of the promise of the coming warmth of spring.

It came as a profound shock to members of Filton Twinning Association to hear of the tragic death of its treasurer … David Lowe (aged 66).

While driving to Luton Airport where he was conveying his granddaughter Abbie, aged 18 - to board an early morning flight, he collapsed at the wheel of his car. If it was not for her corrective action, which spun the car around twice on the motorway, it could have been much worse.

David, who lived at Little Stoke, had been a prominent member of the Twinning Association for 30 years or more.

He had been closely involved in establishing the relations with Filton’s partner towns Witzenhausen (Germany) and St Vallier (France) serving as Vice Chair and Chairman.

At the time of his death he was its Treasurer.

Our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family at this time.

Britain was in 1841 when Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert set up a tree in Windsor Castle for the Royal family, and it quickly became fashionable throughout the country.

Trees were lit with candles and decorated with apples, nuts, sweets and cakes and hung with ribbons. In 1880 Woolworths first sold manufactured tree decorations.

Today the Nordman Fir is probably the most popular Christmas tree in this country, because it has a lovely symmetrical shape, with strong branches, the needles are shiny and soft and do not drop.

In short Christmas would just not be Christmas without the much loved tree and where would Santa put all his presents?

aking on the role of an entertainment promoter after a working life with aero engines I was stuck with finding ‘Father Christmases’ for four department stores.

I managed three of them but come unstuck with the fourth.

I had to do it myself. It was local … at Cribbs Causeway. I remember it well. In fact, I’ll never forget it.

“Be there at 10 am,” said the store manager, “then we will fit you out.” No problem I thought.

It seemed a great opportunity. I often wondered what it would be like. I was soon to find out.

First came the cloak … it was down to my toes. Then the cap with a bob on it … and last of all, the beard. All I needed was an audience. They didn’t provide me with a grotto; there was no place to hide.

A festive shopping experience

This month, Dougie Daniels joined a group of Filtonians at Worcester’s traditional Christmas market

Worcester has a character all of its own. Crowned by a magnificent Cathedral it followed that the Market’s opening ceremony would comprise choristers and clergy supporting the Mayor and his civic team.

It was touching that the carol “Silent Night” was sung in three languages: French, German and our own.

Accompanied by the Salvation Army Band it acknowledged the city’s European links.

Similarly the Junior School’s Brass Band … musicians aged 7 to 11 … ensured that the Elgar tradition would be fully maintained in future years.

This really was a charming

shopping experience with copious “eats” to help you around.

Nancy’s “custom built” sandwiches and Jane Elizabeth’s delightful “fudge.” Just the thing to dispel “economy blues!”

So also was the mystical “silent organist” who pirouetted over the keyboard of the mighty Cathedral organ console without a sound being heard. He was wearing headphones! A pity I thought, yet appropriate for “Silent Night” at the evening’s Carol concert.

I was impressed to observe the enthusiasm of this excursion.

All praise to organiser Sue, of Chest and Heart, with colleagues from the Garden Club.

More rail carriages

Rail operator First Great Western is providing extra train carriages on routes through Filton.

South Gloucestershire Council successfully lobbied the Government to help fund the extra carriages along with campaign groups and residents.

Thirteen extra carriages are being added, which will benefit passengers travelling on several key services which stop at Filton Abbey Wood and Bristol Parkway.

In a further announcement, local MP Jack Lopresti MP welcomed the Government’s announcement that passengers would benefit from nearly 4,500 additional seats each day into and out of London Paddington.

Mr Lopresti said: “This is great news for rail passengers in Filton, especially those who travel in peak times.

“I am well aware of the problems of rail overcrowding so I am pleased to see this Government taking action.”

Blackbeard’s Tea Party Blackbeard’s Tea Party at The Croft ‘What’s The Croft like as a venue?’ I asked my daughter.

She wrinkled her nose. ‘OK, I s’pose. You do stick to the floor a bit, though.’

Hearing this, my elderly parents decided not to attend the Blackbeard’s Tea Party gig, even though their grandson, Dave Boston, plays djembe in the band. I had no such qualms.

I’ve been sticking to floors, at gigs and domestically, since the late 70s. And so I sallied forth to Stokes Croft.

Blackbeard’s Tea Party has undergone a major personnel change recently, with the departure of front man, Paul Young.

I was apprehensive when I heard this, as Paul’s voice is distinctive and suited the band’s material, though his stage persona is dour.

His replacement, Stuart

Deborah Harvey Giddens, is very different but fits in well.

Once he’s memorised the order of the verses in ‘The Landlord’, he’ll be fine.

Local lad Blackbeard was well served by his band’s excellent musicianship. In particular, the fiddle player, Laura Barber, is superbly talented.

For energy and passion, she bears comparison with maestro Seth Lakeman.

Support was provided by local rapper sword dancers, Silver Flame, and by the end of the evening the entire audience was dancing, the band receiving a deserved ovation.

Another perk of being Auntie to the band is that you get to put most of them up afterwards.

Following a slap-up

breakfast next morning, my parents popped around to say hello and stuck to my kitchen floor, so they didn’t miss out either.

This was only the second time Blackbeard’s Tea Party had performed in the West, and that’s a shame as this is surely their spiritual home.

Hopefully they’ll be booked for more festivals here next year.

In the meantime they have a new CD out called ‘Tomorrow We’ll Be Sober’ – just the job for all those approaching seasonal parties!

After nearly 10 years in charge, Gareth Hughes is leaving Filton Sports and Leisure Centre.

In this interview, he reflects on his time here in Filton and reveals his plans for the future

Name, age, job at Filton: Gareth Hughes, age 39, operations manager.

How long have you been there?

Since June 2002.

What did you do before?

Assistant Manager Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre.

You are leaving this month ... why?

I travel from Taunton every day and have decided to get a job closure to home.

What are your plans for the future?

My new job is a change in career, I will be part of the management team of a restaurant in Taunton.

What has been your greatest achievement at Filton?

When I started the small pool was yet to be completed and there was 1 member of staff. 3 months later we opened both pools to the public and had 30 staff, since then we have gone

from none to now 800 kids a week on swim lessons and have seen the development of a squash court into a soft play area. I also believe that the centre has developed strong links with the local primary schools and other local organisations.

What do you think of the people of Filton who use the centre?

We have very loyal customers from Filton, I have enjoyed getting to know them very well, and will miss the regular customers who are what make the centre a success.

If you could change one thing about your time in Filton, what would it be?

I would have liked the planned redevelopment of the centre to have occurred so that we could have a walk through from the pool to the bar, rather than the walk around the outside of the

the deep end building but unfortunately this has not happened.

What will the future be like for Filton Sports and Leisure?

The future should be bright with swimming numbers increasing over the last 2 years and with the Olympics next year hopefully this will encourage more people to use the centre and its great facilities.

What do you think should happen to Elm Park field?

In the recent plans that were rejected there was a path from the leisure centre car park to the bottom of the fields, I think that this would be still be a good idea, possibly well lit up providing a route across the fields, possibly including a cycle path Does Filton have enough sports/leisure facilities?

In the leisure centre development plans, it was suggested to cover the centre’s two 5-a-side, netball and tennis courts. If this was

done it would provide much better all year round provision of tennis, 5-a-side and netball in Filton as there are not any large, under-cover sports areas in Filton.

Are you sad to be leaving?

I am sad to be leaving but after nearly 10 years it is a good time to move on.

Any final message??

I would like to say to all those I have worked with and to all the customers I have got to know it has been a pleasure working in Filton for the last 9 ½ years and I have enjoyed developing the centre and hopefully leave it in good shape, with a good reputation within the local community.

Swimmers from the MoD at Abbeywood raised around £5,000 for the Army Benevolant Fund by swimming a total of 75km at the Filton Sports and Leisure Centre pool.

The 26 swimmers, including two lifeguards from the pool, took it in turns to swim up and down over a period of nine hours.

The money goes to the ABF, known as the Soldiers’ charity, and is used to help soldiers who struggle to adjust to civilian life after years in the military.

Organiser Mick Bell from Stoke Gifford, a project manager at the MoD, said the work of the ABF is vital because it helps all personnel from all generations, unlike Help for Heroes, which only helps those who serve in Afghanistan.

The swimmers were supported by Colonel Andy Flint, the local president of ABF. Leisure centre manager Gareth Hughes said: “We are happy to help such a worthwhile charity.”

Trade group launch

Filton beat Lots of people now cycle to work, school and college, but we’ve noticed that while cyclists have the expensive bikes, the helmet and the Lycra, they forget a key piece of safety kit - lights.

At this time of year people are travelling in the dark, both morning and evening, and it’s essential that cyclists can be seen by other road users. We see all too many collisions involving cyclists who don’t have lights and weren’t wearing bright or reflective clothing. Having and using - appropriate lights on your bike is not a matter of choice, it’s a legal requirement.

Ingredients • 3 oranges • 1 tbsp demerara sugar • 2 tbsp Grand Marnier • 300g leftover Christmas pudding • 500g pot custard • 250g pot mascarpone • 284ml pot double cream • handful flaked almonds, toasted • dark chocolate, grated

We are grateful to reader Sydney James, from Filton, who has sent us this picture of Pegasus House, taken in the 1980s. He tells us: “There is the ‘Britain First’ plaque at top and Pegasus the flying horse below at ground level. No Link Road is visible. The original transparency was taken about 30 years ago on an Exacta VP reflex camera, Kodak Ectachrome positive 127 roll film, and a 65mm Leica Elmar lens. There was a two- second delay on shutter release to avoid button jar, with the result memorable!

Mrs Dawson says: “This recipe uses up leftover Christmas pudding to create a mouth-watering treat that will make Boxing Day really special!”

Method 1. Peel the oranges using a sharp knife, ensuring all the pith is removed. Slice as thinly as possible and arrange over a dinner plate.

Sprinkle with the demerara sugar followed by the Grand Marnier and set aside.

2. Crumble the Christmas pudding into large pieces and scatter over the bottom of a trifle bowl. Lift the oranges onto the custard mixture in a layer and pour over any juices.

3. Beat the mascarpone until smooth, then stir in the custard. Spoon the mixture over the top of the oranges.

4. Lightly whip the cream and spoon over the custard. Sprinkle with the flaked almonds and grated chocolate. You can make this a day in advance if you like, chill until ready to serve.

9th December, 2011. This was the day that I went out to The Mall to buy my cousin’s birthday present for the following day.

A friend and I went up to Cribbs. I walked in, and quite frankly had no idea as to what I would buy her. What I hadn’t realised is that one of her favourite shops had just opened: Lush.

I walked in and friendly staff were there to help me choose as I had no idea.

As for my friend, he walked around for 20 minutes thinking it was a cake shop due to the soap shapes.

Shortly after I left, I realised that it was actually quite fun buying people gifts, so I went off and started ‘Christmas shopping’. It was great, and I felt so good about myself afterwards.

I hadn’t realised all of this until now.

Although receiving presents is very exciting, the whole aspect of buying them is also very satisfying!

There was so much pleasure in seeing my cousin’s face when she opened the present, that in one instant, the whole meaning of Christmas seemed to click in.

Although it wasn’t Christmas at the time, the whole concept of the three kings delivering gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to Jesus makes you think why people deliver presents ... although it is very nice to receive, it is brilliant to give.

I have 5 members of staff some full and some part time and some just help out when necessary.

Where do you live?

I live in Patchway and I am married with 6 children.

People of Filton are warm and friendly and a pleasure to serve.

What did you do before?

Ran a successful garage door company for 11 years.

Why did you decided to start running a cafe?

I felt sorry for the local people if it was to close.

Have your say on where your money goes South Gloucestershire Council is consulting Filton people on its budget and council tax proposals for 2012-13.

This is the chance for residents to have their say so the council can make informed decisions about the future.

Excluding schools, South Glos Council spends over £340 million a year. Central Government provides about £80 million in grants towards these costs. Funding from Government is likely to fall by 28% in real terms over the four years which

will mean difficult decisions will need to be made.

The council has already saved £16 million a year over the last twelve months. In the coming year they will have to save a further £9 million a year and by 2015 they need to be saving in total of £42 million a year.

It’s thanks all round at coffee morning

Filton Chest and Heart, the local charity which helps patients with chest and heart problems, was given £1,500 by the town council to keep up the good work.

The award was made to help the organisation run day trips for people with chest and heart conditions.

He said: “Filton Town Council is delighted to help such a worthwhile cause carry on the vital work they do.”

The presentation, above left, was made at a coffee morning, held at Elm Park, with a further £269.40 raised.

Much of the organisation’s fundraising efforts are used to support local doctors and nurses in their treatment of chest and heart patients.

South Gloucestershire Council has backed Empty Homes Week, a campaign which encourages Filton home owners and landlords with empty properties to bring them back into use.

In South Gloucestershire, 119 properties have been brought back in to use over the last year, reducing the total number of empty homes from 582 to 463.

Filton residents have been warned about the dangers of distraction burglaries.

PCSO Natalie Negravi told a meeting of the town council that although crime in general was down, elderly people needed to take steps to avoid being the victim of bogus callers.

Our meal - chicken curry, and whole masoor dal (lentils) was delivered by owner Angreg Singh right on time.

And on a cold December night, it certainly hit the mark.

The first thing that struck us was how fresh it tasted, how nicely the flavours blended and also how healthy it seemed.

And the combination of the chicken curry sauce worked so well with the lentils on the side.

Clean plates all round!

Bristol is building a reputation as something of an innovative place when it comes to eating and the addition of this tiffin concept surely adds to this.

In conversation with owner Angreg, it is clear he is passionate about both the food and the concept.

His background is in fine hotels but now it seems it is the people of north Bristol who will be benefiting from his enthusiasm and skill.
