Filton residents facing new rules on using tip Filton residents could be required to register for a permit before using the tip at Stoke Gifford under possible changes outlined in a new consultation.

And people with vans face limits on the number of visits they can make in a yar.

South Gloucestershire Council has launched the consultation about possible changes to the way Sort It centres operate.

Currently the council provides four Sort It Centres at Mangotsfield, Stoke Gifford, Thornbury and Yate for the collection of household waste which are operated by SITA. A spokesman said: “The Council Savings Plan sets out how the council plans to deliver £36m of savings between now and 2020.

“After careful consideration, the Council believes that some of the required savings in the overall Council Savings Plan could be made by varying the service provided at our Sort It Centres with a view to saving £400,000 a year from April 2016.

“The council is considering a number of options including: • Limiting business use by clarifying the definition of a van, introducing van permits and limiting the number of times a van can visit in a year • Asking local residents to pre-register for permits before visiting to reduce the number of

non-residents using the sites • Introducing a charge for the collection and disposal of some non-household waste items • Changes to opening hours and the days sites are open “We are also asking the public and service users for other improvement ideas and how we could operate the sites more efficiently.

“Further information about the proposals is available in our consultation document or from our website: www.southglos.gov. uk/consultation “We welcome comments on the proposals outlined until 14 February 2015.

“We are particularly keen to find out if you feel that all relevant areas are being considered and whether you think there are any specific impacts or alternatives that the council should consider.”

Filton Festival facing cancellation and grant payments set to be cut Pictures: Rikki Teml

Filton Festival is facing cancellation for 2015 as the town council attempts to keep the council tax precept down.

The annual festival, usually held in July at the Elm Park fields, has been a fixture in the council calendar for many years with its mix of music, stalls and funfair attractions.

In recent years the town council has budgeted £4,000 to enable the event to break even but with greater pressure on the budget, councillors at the November finance meeting voted to cancel the festival for 2015 with a view to it returning in 2016.

Councillors also voted to reduce grant payments to various charities and groups by 13,000.

This includes payments to youth services but the cuts will be spread across all organisations

Fact Filton residents pay an average of £15.16 a month for the Filton part of the council tax bill

rather than removing payments altogether to some.

The council must now wait to see if central government issues a capping directive to local authorities which would limit how much rise the council can introduce to the precept, the element of council tax which pays for the town council.

Currently a typical household in Filton pays £182 for their precept, the equivalent of £3.50 a month.

The decisions will not be confirmed until the budget is fully agreed in January.

Councillors also heard that with reserves low and the leisure centre facing larger than expected bills for sickness cover, a choice would need to be made between making cuts or increasing the precept.

meeting, councillors were also told that the Ratepayers Arms is currently performing better than anticipated but may still be heading for a loss.

Earlier in the year, councillors said they would review the Ratepayers in April, having given the council-owned pub a year to get back in the black.

Vice-chair of finance Councillor Brian Mead said: “It is disappointing that we are in this position.

“Finance has proposed to withdraw the funding for the festival .

“Our position is not helped by the localism agenda meaning the council is now responsible for services such as Youth Provision with no additional funding from Central Government. Councillors are very focussed on keeping the precept to a minimum.”

Living wage vision Town councillors were urged to investigate paying a ‘living wage’ to all staff in a proposal by Councillor Adam Monk.

Cllr Monk said that there was a need to have a pay rate which was greater than the money which can be earned on benefits. He also said that the council was spending money training and hiring lifeguards who sometimes left to work elsewhere to secure higher pay.

Cllr Monk said that any introduction of the living wage should not affect the precept. Councillors voted to investigate the proposal further.

The Bristol Aero Collection Trust has been awarded a £4.7million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to create an Aerospace Centre at Filton airfield, one of the birthplaces of the British aviation industry.

The new centre will tell the story of Bristol’s aerospace industry from 1910 to the present day and into the future, displaying several important heritage collections. It will create a permanent home where people can access Concorde 216, the last British Concorde assembled at the Filton site, which led the design, testing and production of the supersonic airliner.

Centre to inspire

The Bristol Aerospace Centre at Filton, which provides a permanent home for Concorde, will be a fantastic attraction for the region and provide enormous learning and volunteering opportunities for a wide range of people, from school pupils to local groups and retired workers.

“The fascinating collections, many of which will be made accessible to the public for the first time, include thousands of important objects and nationallysignificant archives which trace over 100 years of technical innovation and engineering brilliance, along with the social history of the people who’ve worked in the industry.”

The project will conserve 9.5 acres of Filton Airfield, along with two listed hangars dating back to World War I and described by English Heritage as “the most complete of any in existence”. The atmospheric spaces will be refurbished to provide a first-class aerospace industrial museum with handson “making and doing” activities, interactive galleries, learning centre and workshops.

The project will also provide an important focal point for the local community with facilities such as meeting places, outdoor play areas and event spaces. In addition, a major new building will create a permanent home for Concorde which will be presented in an exciting and dynamic way, along with a “futures” technology exhibition, corporate facilities and lecture theatre.

Bristol entrepreneur Sir George White established the British and Colonial (later Bristol) Aeroplane Company

in 1910. It went on to employ hundreds of thousands of people in the region and across the globe. The centre will, for the first time, chronicle the social history of those who worked at Filton and the impact of the industry on the wider area.

As well as encouraging people to learn more about this remarkable and previously untold history, a major aim of the centre is to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, technicians, innovators and entrepreneurs.

The Bristol Aerospace Centre will be working in partnership with schools, colleges and universities to provide a programme of learning, bringing together art and design, science and engineering, and local and world history.

Simon Timms, South West committee chair for Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “Aviation is in the blood of the local community the case was all the more persuasive becasue the museum will be sited here.”

Nerys Watts, head of Heritage Lottery Fund South West, said: “From First World War fighter planes to the ground-breaking Concorde, British aviation was born and bred at Filton Airfield.

HLF’s investment of £4.7m will breathe new life into this site, making it a centre of excellence where the industry’s heritage can be truly celebrated. “ Iain Gray, chair of the trust, added: “Concorde was largely designed and built at Filton, with the first British flight taking off in 1969 and the final supersonic flight of any Concorde in the world landing at the airfield on November 26, 2003.

future innovators well cared for by Airbus in the intervening time but this grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund is a great anniversary present for this icon of British design and innovation. The total cost of the project is £16 million and Bristol Aero Collection Trust has already received significant pledged support from BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Airbus, South Gloucestershire Council as well as a number of local and national charitable trusts and major donors.

In a joint statement, South Gloucestershire Council leaders Cllrs Matthew Riddle, Ruth Davis and Pat Rooney said: “We are delighted to hear that the Heritage Lottery Fund

application has been successful and the funding for the Bristol Aerospace Centre has now been approved. For many years we have supported plans for a dedicated centre to celebrate Filton’s aerospace heritage and provide a fitting home for Concorde 216. Our local residents have deep connections with Concorde and the aerospace industry, and we are very pleased to be able to support the centre with the council’s £1.1m contribution, which will be funded by reinvesting business rates generated in the new Filton Enterprise Area.

“The area is the birthplace of the UK’s aerospace industry and remains an internationallyrenowned centre of aviation excellence, hosting giants such as Rolls-Royce, Airbus and GKN. Secondary continues remarkable journey with ‘good’ inspection Abbeywood School has been rated ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors - just three years after a difficult time and poor exam results which left it in special measures.

Under the direction of executive head Dave Baker and associate head Judith Mee, the school has been transformed as the leadership team implemented a series of no-nonsense changes which have seen exam results improve and take-up of new places rise.

Rugby team help Legion to a record fundraising year

A Bristol rugby club has helped a local branch of the Royal British Legion raise a record £40,000 towards this year’s Poppy Appeal.

Dings Crusaders handed a cheque for £800 to the Legion’s Stoke Gifford branch after the club auctioned off shirts featuring poppies worn by players for their game on November 8 in honour of those who lost their lives in World War I. Mike Sanigar of Dings Crusaders and club captain Josh Lloyd presented the proceeds to SG RBL’s joint Poppy Appeal organiser Terry Webber and SG RBL deputy standard bearer Karen Falconer.

Mr Webber said: “The public, and Dings Crusaders RFC, have been very generous helping us raise our current branch record

Money raised by the Poppy Appeal goes towards the Legion’s Welfare Fund. Currently the Legion is spending £1.6 million every week in help and support for current and former service personnel, their families and dependants.

The branch has other fundraising events planned during the forthcoming year including its popular annual concert, due in March 2015.

Council chairman seeks Filton’s best Filton Town Council’s chairman has launched a new awards scheme aimed at finding the ‘best of Filton’ across a range of categories.

Cllr Rikki Teml said he wanted to give the opportunity to all residents to nominate and recognise people and groups who make the community a better place in which to live.

Filton residents are now being urged to submit their nominations, with supporting statments no more than 350 words, by January 31, either to the Filton Town Council office, Elm Park, Filton BS34 7PS or by emailing to rikki.teml@ filtontowncouncil.gov.uk The categories are: l Young person of the year

Fair marks start of festive season Charborough Road Primary School rang in the Christmas season on Saturday, November 29, with its annual Christmas Fair. The event is a firm Filton favourite, with children, parents, relatives, the local community and businesses all coming together to have some festive fun and raise funds for the school.

Laura Booth, Friends Of School Christmas Fair coordinator, said: “The Christmas Fair is one of our biggest events of the year, and as well as helping us to buy much-needed new equipment it also helps us supplement things like school

trips and outings, making sure all children get the opportunity to go.”

This year’s event saw the return of the traditional games room run by Year 6 children, face painting, a giant luxury hamper raffle (won by former pupil Molly Clayton, 11) and the Christmas tree auction (winning bidder Kim Radford).

And of course no fair would be complete without a visit from the guests of honour Mother and Father Christmas. The big man was certainly a hit with Ethan Carpenter, Year 3, who said: “I can’t believe Father Christmas went to my school!

How lucky are we that he came from the North Pole to see me and my friends at school? Totally awesome!”

Maja Lewis, Year 1, especially liked it when Mother Christmas sprinkled fairy dust on her reindeer food “because it made my hand and arm all sparkly!”

We also saw some new features and faces – people were queuing to get into the new Disco Room which played old and new favourites and was ably compered by Ben Harrison, who left Charborough last year for Abbeywood. Overall the fair raised in excess of £3,000 for the school. Nicola Bailey, head of

Santa and his helpers, above; traditional games and activities were popular at this year’s fair, left Charborough Road, said: “This is a huge success for the school and everyone involved should be very proud – it will make a very real difference to our pupils.”

December: Computer games

It is nearly 40 years since we played games like Pong or Space Invaders. I remember losing hours of time to defeating aliens on my VIC20 in 1983. But who plays games now?

A recent study showed and found that almost 60% of people played computer games.

48% of gamers are women and all 6 to 10-year-olds play games. A gamer is defined as someone who has played video games in the last six months on any machine, including interactive TV. 32% of 65-72 year olds play games as well. The younger players are still the ones who play the longest; for example 8-15 year olds play for over 20 hours per week on average.

The fact is that games are big business with photorealistic worlds you can immerse yourself in, a story which has a plot and you are the central character.

Budgets for these can be the same as a Hollywood movie sometimes costing over $100 million dollars to produce and then another $100 million to promote.

So when thinking what to get your mum or dad for Christmas – it might be the latest role playing game (RPG) or first person shooter (FPS) rather than those comfy slippers!

Mario’s ‘Mo Bros’ within a whisker of raising £1,700

by Rebecca Day Almost £1,700 has been raised by a team of 'tache growers – in a bid to change the face of men's health.

It is the fifth year that team captain Mario Parrinello, owner of Filton Barbers, has taken part in Movember – an annual, month-long campaign which challenges men to grow moustaches while raising vital funds to improve the lives of men affected by testicular and prostate cancer, and mental health problems.

Mario told Filtonvoice: “I got involved with Movember because I've had family members who have had cancer, plus growing a moustache ties in well with the industry I work in, so I thought it was the natural thing to do.”

There were 13 “Mo Bros” – the name given to men taking part in Movember – involved in the Filton Barbers team, which raised £1,683 in total.

Mario, who is pictured left with the moustache he grew last month, said on the Filton Barbers Facebook page: “I’d like to thank the team and to everyone who has donated.

“We have raised an incredible amount and it's still coming in.

“The moustache has now gone and the top lip is feeling a bit cold, but at least I have my memories. plus a few photos, until next year.”

Why wasn’t 102-year-old allowed to stay in hospital, demands neighbour

by Rebecca Day A neighbour of a 102-yearold Filton resident who was discharged from Southmead Hospital late at night says she is concerned with the way her friend was treated.

Violet Green was admitted to the Brunel building’s A&E department following concerns with her heart, but was later discharged by doctors.

Carole Mallet, aged 93, was the only person available to let her neighbour in when the Red Cross – which works in partnership with the hospital – brought Mrs Green home at around 10pm.

According to Mrs Green, the reason she was unable to stay at the hospital was because there were no beds. However, North Bristol NHS Trust has refuted these claims, saying that beds were available.

Mrs Mallet said that the 102-year-old started feeling unwell in the afternoon, so an ambulance was called at around 6pm. Paramedics, who assessed her at her home, were concerned about her heart rate, so they took her to hospital for further examinations. She was seen by doctors, who decided that she was well enough to be discharged.

Mrs Mallet, who has a spare key for her neighbour's property, then received a call from the Red Cross at around 9pm, informing her Mrs Green would be returning home in an hour and a half.

A key was not handed over to the paramedics because Mrs Green was concerned that it would be lost at the hospital, Mrs Mallet told Filtonvoice.

She said: “It is a lot for a lady of that age to be left on her own

after returning from hospital – I was very concerned.

“I thought, why didn’t the hospital just let her stay? Violet said that she was told no beds were available – and she's a very competent woman.”

Mrs Mallet added: “It was late for her to come home, and I was expected to let her in. I’m not her carer, I’m her neighbour.”

Since returning from hospital, Mrs Green has been doing housework – including her ironing.

Ms Mallet said: “Violet is marvellous – she’s a very independent lady. The first thing she does in the morning is pull her curtains so we know she's OK.” Dr Chris Burton, medical director at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “Anyone who comes into our emergency department receives a full assessment.

Following this, a decision will be made with [the patient] as to whether it is in their best interests to be admitted to hospital or discharged.

“If an elderly person raised concerns about going home we would support them in the hospital for as long as necessary.

“We have a partnership with the Red Cross to help patients who need support with their discharge home. The Red Cross team work within the emergency department and they can take patients home and ensure they are settled back in before leaving them.

“On Wednesday night last week there were beds available in the hospital. However, if a patient needed a bed and one was not immediately available we would care for them in the emergency zone until they could be taken to a ward.”

It was prior to a meeting with the Council. It gave me an opportunity to express my

concerns along with the opinions of those in the Community on the transformation that was about to take place.

Being involved in the aero industry for most of my working life I could be regarded as being prejudiced to the changes that were about to be made.

That is not so. The emergence of Bradley Stoke prevented Filton becoming an airport.

I felt at the time that its closeness to rail and motorway links made it predominantly suitable to give to Bristol a long haul travel facility.

Bristol lacks that facility compared with Manchester,

It staggers your thoughts that having witnessed the emergence of such icons like the “Brabazon”, the “Britannia” and “Concorde”

Occasionally we are able to claim some success but more often than not we are left at the mercy of the commercial decisions of private businesses with a national, or even global presence, with little regard to the reality of living and working in our area.

Recently I was contacted by someone who works at Cribbs Causeway and lives in Yate which is one of our major local towns. Despite the Mall not closing until 9pm, or 10pm during the Christmas seasons, buses currently stop serving this route before 9pm. Poor public transport services such as this are madness causing real barriers to employment for many people.

As part of the discussion on devolution I suggest the West of England Partnership uses this opportunity to strengthen its arm as our ‘de facto’ Integrated Transport Authority.

Two shining stars from Orchard School Bristol, Matt Speight and Skie-Louise Lyons, picked up awards at a recent ‘Celebrating Young People’ ceremony.

The evening, hosted at Hilton Hotel Bristol, was put on by education provider and theatre group, Unique Voice, to recognise inspiring children and young people from across the city and to commend their achievements.

Matt won the award for ‘Digital Champion of the Year’ for his contribution to a webite, which aims to tackle bullying online, and for developing his own anti-bullying phone app.

Unique Voice said: “Matt is incredibly ambitious, developing his own [mobile phone] app to help stop bullying, actively participating in national company prototypes to help improve online services and to top it all off, contributing to a website to enhance online safety and tackle bullying within his own school.

“An extremely inspiring young man, whom we are sure will continue to strive for greatness.”

Skie-Louise picked up the

award for ‘Educating Others’ for her “dedication to helping other young people learn about right and wrong, whilst being a strong friend”.

The event was the first of its kind - and with every seat taken by a mixture of teachers, friends, business owners, and the young people themselves, it proved to be a successful and heartwarming evening.

Unique Voice, whose patron is Sir Patrick Stewart, was set-up over three years ago by Bath Spa graduates Krystal Keeley, Cat Sparkes and Claire Farnham.

They work extensively across Bristol, including at Orchard School, using performances, classes and workshops to provide a platform for young people to explore their talents, skills, and fears.

Unique Voice said: “We were truly overwhelmed by the support for the awards, and overjoyed with its residing success.

Anti-bullying ideas are put into action at schools

A group of young people from Filton keen to tackle bullying have put their ideas into action in the classroom.

During National Anti-Bullying Week last month, members of Filton Youth Council took a one-hour workshop into schools including Charborough Road Primary and Filton Hill Primary schools.

The group will be working with Year 7 students at Orchard School this month and hope to visit Abbeywood Community School in the new year.

The project won a £2,000 grant from the Quartet Community Foundation to help the youth council – Chandra, Chantelle, Chloe, Courtney, Dexter, Diya, Ellie, George, Josh, Kelly and Lewis – create DVD clips with A Jem Production and to design the workshops.

Two of the ‘anti-bullying shields’ created by schoolchildren Local businesses have also sponsored the initiative after being approached by the youth council, including DLIT, Coop, and Merlin, which has allowed the group to give out information bags containing

leaflets, wristbands, badges and sweets.

As part of the sessions the schoolchildren worked with the group to create “anti-bullying shields”, which are now displayed in the classrooms.

Celebrate with a disco and games

Young people in Filton are invited to celebrate the Christmas season with a disco, party games and buffet.

Filton Youth Council is organising Christmas parties for two age groups on Tuesday, December 16, at FACE, St Andrew’s Youth Centre in Elm Park.

Eight to 10-year-olds are invited to join the fun from 5-6.30pm, while from 7-8.30pm it will be the turn of those aged 11 and above. Tickets are £2.50 and are available from Filton Town Council office or FACE. The ticket price includes buffet, party games and disco and the organisers say: “Please join us for a fun festive night.”

Noodle’s leading way in creating a commmunity hub Make no bones about it – Wallscourt Farm Academy is becoming a hub for the developing community of Cheswick Village.

That’s the news from the primary school’s most famous inhabitant – Noodle the dog.

He joined the academy at the same time as its first pupils in September last year and, like the children, he has grown a lot and is learning new things every day.

Noodle, who is a spoodle – a cross between a springer spaniel and a poodle – is the figurehead for the new Noodle Network, which is bringing together businesses, organisations and residents.

The network was launched at the academy's carnival in the summer and those who attended the first meeting in November enjoyed touring the open plan learning space, sharing Noodle’s favourite biscuits, and taking turns on the indoor slide.

Another meeting will be held in the new year and a business and enterprise forum is planned.

Anyone interested in knowing more is asked to contact the school in Long Down Avenue.

The academy, which now has 110 pupils aged four to six, has already hosted community events and intends to share its facilities more in the future, once its farm opens and its sports pitch is ready for use next summer.

Eventually it will accommodate 420 children.

Asda Filton has helped ensure North Bristol Foodbank is fully stocked with festive foodie treats by donating £200 to the charity.

Filton Foodbank representatives visited the store to collect the donation and meet customers to explain more about the organisation.

The supermarket donated a large assortment of nonperishable foods to North Bristol Foodbank, which can now be handed out to those in need in the local community.

Community Life Champion at Asda Filton, Gavin Picknell, said: “With colder weather setting in and the festive season upon us, we hope the donation will be a welcome addition to the

already fantastic help and support the foodbank provides within the local community.”

A bakery and its customers are hoping to spread some festive cheer to wounded servicemen by providing Stockings for Heroes.

Buckley’s Sandwich Bar and Bakery, on Gloucester Road North, raised £250 which has been used to fill 15 Christmas stockings for servicemen in recovery centres and hospitals around the country.

The initiative is organised by Help for Heroes and Buckley’s owner Michelle thanked customers, family, friends and colleagues for their generosity.

A new specialist arterial centre, providing state-of-the-art inpatient care has opened at Southmead Hospital.

The centre will specialise in the management of vascular diseases, and disorders of the arteries, veins and lymphatic system.

If left unchecked, vascular disease can lead to blockages of arteries and veins or weakening of walls resulting in the formation of aneurysms.

These diseases can be managed by medical therapy, supervised exercise programmes, radiological procedures and surgical reconstruction.

Patients with vascular disorders will be cared for by specialist vascular teams at the centre with a consultant-led vascular service providing 24/7 vascular surgery.

Approximately 1.3 million people in the South West will benefit from the new service.

Benefits to patient include: l Round-the-clock access to vascular services with a dedicated vascular ward staffed by a specialist team.

l A hybrid operating theatre – equipped with the latest radiology equipment to allow less invasive procedures to be performed safely. l A dedicated 39-bed vascular ward. l Patients better able to manage their condition and recovery and have a shorter stay because of the development of skills and expertise between clinicians.

Marcus Brooks, consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon, said: “The changes being made to local vascular services are going to bring great benefits for patients.

“For the first time all patients in the area will have access to a team of experts under one roof.

Bringing everyone together has meant we can update and improve the service.

“We believe that the new major arterial centre at Southmead Hospital Bristol will produce better outcomes for vascular surgery patients.”

The majority of care will be delivered as close to people’s homes as possible, using the area’s network of hospitals.

We’re running a Christmasthemed campaign this month to crack down on drink-related issues that can seriously spoil your festive fun.

At this time of year around one in every five arrests are for assaults, and a significant number of these are caused by people drinking too much.

We want to raise awareness to reduce the number of offences, like criminal damage and public disorder.

The number we deal with is relatively low, but we’d like that to even fewer.

We all like to enjoy ourselves at Christmas time, but no one wants to end up being arrested and having to phone home to tell their family they’re spending the night in a police cell.

So many offences we’re highlighting can be prevented.

We want to encourage everyone to think about the amount they drink and irresponsible behaviour that can follow, and help prevent them from doing something they’ll regret.”

Officers will also be visiting bars, pubs, off licences and other venues to remind people that a drunken night can have a big impact on them and people around them if it leads to violence or disorder.

Neighbourhood police teams will also be attending shopping events and other daytime activities on the run-up to Christmas to remind residents and visitors about protecting

their belongings. We’re urging people to make sure they secure their belongings when out and about – like not leaving valuables or presents on show in their car or in the front window at home - and take a few simple measures to help secure their homes at night or when they are away.

And, of course, our Christmas and new Year Operation Tonic anti-drink and drug driving campaign is underway. It makes sense not to drink at all if you intend to drive, and to beware driving the day after you have been drinking as you may still be over the limit.

We want everyone to have a safe and happy Christmas. Our message is to enjoy yourselves but to celebrate responsibly and make sure you spend the festive period with your friends and family - and not with the police.”

Airbus employees in Filton competed to launch the best parachute using their aircraft designing skills, raising £140 for Children in Need. Contestants had to design the slowest parachute to hit the floor or land the closest to a Pudsey Bear target in order to win. Parachutes were dropped off the second floor balcony in the office buildings.

‘Morning after’ drinkers targeted in campaign Avon and Somerset Police’s annual Christmas drink driving campaign has begun with Filton party-goers being warned ‘morning after’ drivers are particularly in the spotlight.

On the 50th anniversary of the first nationwide public information film on drinking and driving, Operation Tonic will run throughout December and into the New Year, aiming to help reduce deaths, serious injuries and crime on the roads by tackling drink and drug driving.

Police activity during the month will include vehicle stop-check operations, targeted patrols and awareness-raising at events and in pubs and bars.

A spokesperson said: “We would also urge anyone who has concerns about someone they believe may be drink or drug driving to call us on 101 or text the word drunk and as many details as they can to 81819.”

Road Safety Superintendent Richard Corrigan said: “This year we will be extending our visible

presence to the morning period as lots of intelligence indicates that people drive the morning after drinking heavily the night before.

“If you have several drinks on a night out you can’t simply assume you will be safe to drive the next day.

“We will be carrying out stop checks throughout the month and New Year and will arrest any drivers who are suspected to be driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

“Two hundred and thirty road deaths in Britain last year were directly linked to drink driving.

During the summer campaign in Avon and Somerset, 158 people were arrested on suspicion of drink/drugs driving, most between 7pm-6am. But seven were made between 6am9am and 17 between 9am-7pm.

Pro Wrestling Chaos will be debuting in a new venue on the 31st of January when they suplex their way into the BAWA Club!

This is part of the Pro Wrestling Chaos expansion which, due to their exploding popularity, has seen many of their previous events sell out, forcing them to move to larger venues to meet demand.

Fun on and off the pitch as U13s head to Belgium on 2014 tour This year, St Vallier Football Club’s U13s team headed to Belgium to take on teams from other European countries. There was fun on and off the pitch for the boys and their families, as parent Keli Bateman reveals in her Belgium Tour 2014 diary.

Day 1 Early start at 3am to meet at Elm Park at 3.45am, the coach arrives and one by one we board the coach and leave at 4am. The atmosphere on board is full of excitement, chatter, laughter and joking around, this lasts an hour or so then one by one the boys begin to fall asleep. The ferry from Dover to Calais was very smooth and most parents gathered on the outer deck while the boys explored the ferry.

Back onto the coach once the ferry had docked and we were

beginning the European leg of our journey to Centre Parcs Lommel, Belgium. We finally arrived after a long, hot 12-hour journey and once we were checked into our homes for the week, there was one thing on all the boys’ minds – and it wasn’t football. It was to arrange with one another the time they would all be meeting in the centre’s swimming pool dome complex.

Parents, carers and boys all enjoyed a few hours riding the water chutes, rapids and plunge pools.

The boys explored the indoor sports dome, playing table tennis and having a kick-about before we all headed back to our rooms for the night.

Day 2 The weather was very wet and humid but this didn’t spoil our

day. Swimming was on the agenda first, followed by a BMX activity for all the boys.

The boys arrived back at the dome a couple of hours later and as time was ticking on we had a quick change into the St Vallier’s strip and onto the coach for the drive to our first football fixture against the Dutch side VV Wodan.

Back onto the coach following our very wet football match but despite our defeat the coach was buzzing and the boys were in good spirits, arranging what they were going to do when we got back to Centre Parcs.

This looked so much fun and was followed by an hour or so playing on the chutes before our next activity which consisted of wearing a safety harness to complete an obstacle course while suspended high up in the dome. Now I am not going to go on but this was probably the scariest thing I have ever put myself up for but considering I was the only girl and I was first to take the plunge, I had to complete this.

It wasn’t easy. It was very hot and I did slip at one point, leaving myself sitting on a tight rope but, not blowing my own trumpet, I did complete it. Unlike my adult companions who were rescued half-way round!

before watching the boys who flew around this without a care in the world.

A quick break before the boys went off for their next activity, which was laser tag in the woods.

Some parents went with them while the rest of the parents enjoyed the sunshine.

Day 4 We had a free morning and most headed for the swimming pool for a few hours.

That afternoon we boarded our coach to travel to our second football fixture which was a tournament. We played four matches we won one, drew one and lost two but the boys enjoyed the experience.

Back onto the coach for our return journey to Centre Parcs for our last evening. The boys headed for the indoor sports facility and outdoor courts to play table tennis, football or just hang out.

Day 5 Journey Back To Bristol We had a few hours this morning

to relax and a bite to eat before boarding the coach for our return journey back to Bristol. Spirits were still very high with lots of chatter but the journey home had some very tired boys, parents and carers, much more than our outbound journey.

We stopped in Calais for a bite to eat and a quick shopping trip to the hypermarket before heading to the port to board our ferry. We managed to get through customs very quickly, which allowed us to hop onto an earlier ferry back to Dover.

After a very fun-filled few days and a couple of long coach journeys we arrived back at Elm Park at around 9.30pm with lots of thoughts on fundraising to be able to do it all again in 2015 – but maybe an English venue will get our vote.

Getting ready for winter

Now the colder months are here, there are several things we should be considering to keep our pets happy and healthy.

DOGS As the evenings are closing in, you may be walking your dog after dark. It is important for both you and your pet to be seen whilst out and about.

Fluorescent or light-up leads, collars and tags can be really useful to help keep track of your dog, and can be a good safety feature near traffic.

If the weather turns icy, beware that your dog doesn’t venture near frozen ponds or lakes. The ice can be thinner than it appears and could crack - this is a tip for both animals and humans! Excessive walking on ice or snow can cause problems for your dog’s feet and you can reduce soreness by

Christmas is the time for giving, but avoid giving your pet an upset stomach by not treating them to leftovers, as too much of an unfamiliar food can cause vomiting and even diarrhoea. Rich foods such as chocolate and certain fruits and nuts are actually toxic to pets.

CATS If your cat spends a lot of time outside, through preference or necessity, it may be worth creating a shelter for your pet in a small outside kennel or box, filled with warm blankets.

Be sure to keep antifreeze well away from cats and avoid any spillages when topping-up your car. Cats are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of it, but one of the main chemical

components of antifreeze causes rapid kidney failure if ingested. If you suspect your pet may have ingested antifreeze, contact your local vets immediately.

Keep an eye on your cat around Christmas decorations.

Tinsel and ribbon may be good fun to play with, but curious cats, especially kittens, can sometimes chew on it and may end up with a blockage in the intestine.

RABBITS As temperatures drop, it is extremely important to ensure that your rabbit stays warm enough. If at all possible, moving hutches into a garage or outbuilding is a good idea.

However, if you are placing your little pet in a garage, ensure they are kept well away from toxic car fumes.

Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti is helping to raise awareness of a medical condition that affects thousands of people in the UK by setting up an All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG).

Mr Lopresti is chairing the group after meeting constituent Carla Attwood whose seven-yearold daughter suffers from 22q11 syndrome.

The condition affects many of the body’s systems, including the heart,immune system, palate, behaviours and mental health and new genetic technology is helping identify those with the the symdrome, helping to improve sufferers’ lives through early delivery of care.

Mr Lopresti said: “The 22q11 syndrome is estimated to effect up to 35,000 people in the UK. The detection rate is currently very low which means people may not be getting the help they need. I am pleased that so many of my colleagues have joined this APPG.”

Generous shoppers ensure needy children will get Christmas treats Customers at Sainsbury’s store in East Filton have donated two trolleys’ worth of toys to The Lord Mayor of Bristol’s Children Appeal.

It is one of many local children’s charities set to benefit from the collection scheme at Sainsbury’s supermarkets across Bristol.

In total the volunteer-run charity is due to receive 40 gifts suitable for children of all ages, with a retail value of £428.

It has almost become a tradition for customers to show their support for the city’s most needy children by buying an extra toy in their Christmas shop for the collection. “Charity trolleys” are placed by the store exit at Fox Den Road in Stoke Gifford as well as at Sainsbury’s supermarkets throughout the country.

The Lord Mayor of Bristol’s Children Appeal collects toys every year, as well as raising £66,000 to give 1,650 children each a £20 voucher for food

and a £20 voucher for a gift or clothing. The money is raised through donations from organisations, businesses, schools and individuals, and events including a carol concert, collections and gala dinner.

The collections are supported

by members of the city’s Rotary, Round Table, Lions and Soroptimist clubs.

Sainsbury’s East Filton store manager Steve Jones said: “Sainsbury’s corporate charitable support focuses on health, food, families and children. Many

people know of Sainsbury’s work through its Active Kids scheme and partnership with Comic Relief.

“Our stores also have local charities we support, which is part of Sainsbury’s aim to make a positive difference in our communities. Customers and staff at Sainsbury’s East Filton are pleased to be helping The Lord Mayor of Bristol’s Children Appeal.”

Volunteer chairman and treasurer for The Lord Mayor of Bristol’s Children Appeal, Bruce Simmonds, thanked customers and staff: “This is such good news for the charity, which is helping 1,650 disadvantaged children at Christmas.

“We are delighted by this generous gift, which will help give children a Christmas they are able to celebrate. These toys go to children whose families simply have just enough to survive, and do not have the money for Christmas treats most take for granted.”
