Retail shake-up on Glos Road North Filtonvoice has learned the Texaco petrol garage on Gloucester Road North could be demolished and replaced by five ‘retail units’, according to plans submitted to South Glos Council. There would also be a new access for vehicles and car parking if the plans are approved.

In another application, the former Good Viewing TV and electrical shop, near the shoppers’ car park, could become a cafe/ restaurant for 40 covers and ‘mixed use’ retail development. Both applications will be considered by South Glos Council planners.

August, 2013 Please mention Filtonvoice when replying to an advert!!!

Read why advertising in ‘The Voice’ is the BEST option ... just listen to what our advertisers and customers are saying GotoiT, P28

Computer repairs

I recently had a computer virus and on a Saturday morning I phoned Graham at gotoiT. He could not have been more helpful and asked me to bring my computer in straight away. Graham phoned me several times to keep me updated on his progress and I picked up my computer the following Tuesday, completely restored to health. I was impressed that he explained things to me in words I could understand and he was very professional. I am delighted to find such excellent service locally.

DGR Windows, P26 Window and door repairs

After reading the advert for DGR Windows in the ‘Voice’ we contacted them and 2 other companies who all attended and quoted for 6 replacement ‘Georgian’ barred double glazed units that had ‘misted’ up over the years. Not only was DGR Windows the cheapest quote but the time scale between measuring and fitting was just under 3 weeks. He is a very personable man and we would happily recommend his work to any person needing similar work to ourselves.

Lanes Carpets, P34 Carpet supply and fitting

Jeff as usual did a first class job of measuring, ordering and fitting a new bedroom carpet. The time scale between contact and completion was very acceptable. The price and fitting charges very reasonable. Would recommend him for all types of carpets and flooring.

Andrew Murley (digital aerial installation), P32

Andrew responded promptly to my phone call to attend our house (poor television signal). He diagnosed various connection problems, upgraded the booster and plugs and re-tuned the TVs. All at a reasonable cost. (He insisted on removing his shoes on entry!) 2 0 1 3 Very impressed.

I decided to put an ad in filtonvoice and I was delighted to pick up work well into next year, and not just a one-off job but a number of jobs.

Gardener Graham Cook, P23

We are happy and proud to be associated with such a high quality publication – it is well written, well designed and it is probably the best local magazine we have seen. Dream Doors, P24

I have used FiltonVoice from the very first issue to advertise our FACS (Friends of Abbeywood Community School) events. At our car boot sale on 19th May we asked people coming through the door how they had heard of the event and the vast majority said it was because they’d seen it in FiltonVoice. They also commented on what a great magazine it is. I shall continue using the magazine to advertise our fundraising events.

Filton family tell No.10 how charity’s nurses are lifeline When caring for a severely disabled child, time is precious – time spent with the child and time to do the day-to-day things many of us don’t give a second thought. Faith Tutton, mum to Sophie, explains how a Bristol-based charity has thrown her family a lifeline and how she has helped bring the team’s work to the attention of those at Number 10. Our younger daughter Sophie has Rett Syndrome, a neurological condition that she was born with. However, we didn't know she had it for the first year of her life as she learned to sit, crawl, babble and feed herself. At the age of 14 months she went through a short but devastating regression, when all that she had learned disappeared. Our little girl was no longer able even to sit unaided. She lost her speech. Within a year she had been diagnosed with epilepsy, a spinal curvature and breathing abnormalities. Now she has a tube into her stomach to help her feed. She needs constant oxygen. We have had to deal with all of Sophie’s complex medical needs and come to terms with her poor prognosis, combined with the grief of losing the little girl we once had. This is where Jessie May nurses come in. Jessie May is a Bristol- based charity providing nursing care at home for children and young people with lifelimiting conditions who are not expected to live beyond the age of 19. Jessie May has offered us a lifeline. The charity has been able to provide us with a team of nurses who are able to draw up all of Sophie's meds, competently manage her gastrostomy tube, her oxygen, and her complex seizures. They are able to release me from the strain of caring for a few hours. This has enabled me to be mum to our older daughter Lucy, to give her the quality time that can so often disappear when faced with the difficulties of

caring for a profoundly disabled child. At the beginning of July Sophie spent four nights in hospital. On two occasions a Jessie May nurse came in to sit with her, and feed her, so that I could get out of the ward for enough time to eat a meal. They are able to tailor their help to the families that need it most. Respite in the home is more than being able to sit and put your feet up for three hours. It's about giving us all time. Time for Sophie to play and have all her needs met by a dedicated and professional nurse. Time to spend with our older daughter, get the housework done, or the shopping. Time to get back on top of things so I can be the best Mum and carer to Sophie. We don't know how much time we will have with Sophie, but the Jessie May nurses help us to make the most of it. To publicise this good work, and with the intention of extending the service to a broader area, possibly even nationwide, Jessie May were invited to a reception at 10 Downing Street and we were asked to go along too. We met Samantha Cameron and many of the trustees of Jessie May. We were able to have a look around the first floor and have lots of photos taken there. We were even able to drive up Downing Street and park our car directly opposite Number 10! It was a great experience and one which I hope will serve to publicise the wonderful work that this charity does for so many life-limited children in the area.

Meeting to discuss airfield future A meeting will be held to discuss the future of the Filton airfield site. It is being held at Filton Community Centre on Thursday, September 5 at 7pm. Campaigners still believe the site, which closed to flights in December is still viable and could be used to create jobs as well as maintaining the aerospace industry. They also point to the lack of airport capacity in the UK and say Filton could be an answer. Filton Airfield was closed by BAE Systems who said the airfield was no longer sustainable and that they had had no interest from other parties in buying it as an airfield. Just days before the airfield saw the last ever flights from its runway, the Bristol Post revealed that it had been sold to a highprofile London-based property

JB

company, Bridgehouse Capital Limited in a deal thought to be worth £120million. Last month, the Post also revealed that the airfield made £1.6 million profit in its last year of operation.

Airfield campaigner Barry Cash told the Post: “Filton has one of the longest runways in the country. “It’s inconceivable that it could not be a going concern

for today’s rapidly expanding aviation industry.” Local campaigner and Filton councillor Doug Daniels said: “The disclosures that the airfield did not run at a loss to the operators has directed possibilities that could be further investigated. “A direct approach has been made to airline operators – significantly Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Airlines – who are experiencing difficulties at Gatwick due to the airport’s expansion and may be looking for alternative maintenance bases, as a result. “Filton could alternatively be used as an ancillary to Lulsgate Airport to serve the business community and encourage the intended growth of Bristol. “We welcome all residents to hear all about it at this important meeting.”

News Ofsted praise for Abbeywood after recent ‘inspection’ Abbeywood Community School is continuing to make “significant progress”, 18 months after executive head Dave Baker, right, began his mission to take the secondary out of special measures. The school has now had a series of monitoring inspections by Ofsted, including one in June following Abbeywood becoming a sponsored academy earlier this year. Inspectors have indicated progress in “raising standards for all pupils”, following record improvement in GCSE results last year and a similar outcome expected later this month. Mr Baker said inspectors had noted “solid progress” on several fronts and said there was a real air of confidence among staff. He said there were still areas for improvement, including in attendance, but said behaviour was now “steady”. Ofsted also praised the “cohesive” working relationship between Abbey Wood and Bradley Stoke School, which both operate under the Olympus Trust banner. In their report, Ofsted said:

WAY-A-HEAD

For ladies and gentlemen

“Since conversion to academy status the school has continued to build on the foundations for improvement seen during 2011/12. Staff and students confirm that the school is a calm and purposeful community. The number of exclusions has significantly reduced over the last year. “This is the result of the support for students which is thoughtfully planned to meet their individual needs and, where appropriate, carried out by support staff.” In a letter to parents, Mr Baker said: “We hope you will agree that there are many positives in the letter, based on what the inspectors saw during the two days they spent in school on 20th and 21st June. “It was a very useful experience for the school as it re-confirmed for us the areas we need to focus on between now and a full Ofsted section 5 inspection before the end of 2014. “We need to achieve at least “good” in all areas when that inspection takes place.”

Big step forward for rail campaign to link Filton with rest of Bristol The campaign to bring back the Henbury Loop Line – led by Bristol MP Charlotte Leslie – took a massive step forward after a special train was commissioned to run on the route. Around 100 guests, including rail campaigners, politicians of all parties and residents, had a taste of what might be if funding is found to restore the Loop as part of Bristol’s MetroWest rail system. The MetroWest scheme would link Filton Abbey Wood to Henbury and stations on the Severn Beach Line. It is also understood that the former North Filton stop could be utilised to cope with proposed development on and around Filton Airfield. Ms Leslie, who has been spearheading the battle to bring the Loop back into service, said she was delighted with the enthusiasm for the plan and now called on the West of England Partnership to push for the scheme’s introduction as soon as possible. The partnership’s current plans only stipulate a Henbury ‘Spur’, meaning trains would have to return in the direction they came, described by Ms Leslie as ‘wholly inadequate’. She said: “A proper loop and a reopened Henbury station, as part of MetroWest, would be a gamechanger for Bristol with the investment needed – around £10m to get it going – a drop in the ocean compared to the long-term benefits for decades to come.

parties, rail campaigners and commuter who agreed that Bristol’s congestion problems will only be solved by a proper rial network connecting as much of the city as possible.

“This is an opportunity which must not be missed. “This loop line would create a circle line round the city, joining up the line going north from Temple Meads in the east of the city, via Filton to a new, re-opened Henbury Station and onwards to join the ever-more popular Severn Beach Line, and back down via Clifton Down to Temple Meads. “The doubters mutter that it is all just too difficult and can never happen. “The West of England Partnership currently favour a re-opened station at Henbury, but as a cul-de-sac turn-back station; like building a circuit board but not finishing the final millimetre to make the whole thing light up. “However, on a specially chartered train last month, we proved the doubters wrong – that it can happen. Currently freight trains

use the line but not passenger services. Ms Leslie, who has been campaigning strongly on this issue for several years, says it would be a massive missed opportunity if a full loop was not created. The special journey was welcomed by politicians of all

July Filton Town Council roundup Dog mess Filton town councillors heard complaints from residents that dog mess is getting worse on Elm Park fields and other locations in the town. Resident Dave Mikkelson said the situation was “terrible” and that he had not seen the dog warden for some time. Another resident, Beryl Brand, said she had asked the council to place more dog bins but this had not happened. PCSO Sheryl Drewitt, when asked about owners whose dogs leave a mess, said that since it is a bylaw situation, it should be reported to the dog warden but she confirmed officers would speak to owners if they received a complaint. Councillor Andy Chubb Councillor Andy Chubb will NOT be resigning from the authority, despite his statement last month that he would be standing down due to dissatisfaction with councillors not being listened to. Cllr Chubb, a Labour

councillor for Conygre, said he had stood down from the finance committee but indicated he may return at a future date. In a stormy discussion session, residents said he should not be able to attend future meetings of finance. However it was pointed out that the set-up of finance means all councillors are invited to attend each month

• Setting up a group aimed at helping men with issues they might be facing. Katie also updated councillors on plans to bid for cash to buy a bus which would serve the town, especially Conygre, which has seen bus services withdrawn. She said: “There have been 30 applications submitted to the Sustainable Travel Grant fund, with the total expenditure requested totalling over £1m. “Whilst the interest has been very positive, this means not all schemes submitted can be funded through this as the total fund is just £750,000. “After a successful community consultation involving over 40 Filton residents the Filton/ Conygre Bus steering group, consisting of Southern Brooks Community partnership, Four Towns and Vale link Community Transport, Filton Town Council, Filton Sure Start Centre and South Gloucestershire Council have submitted a grant application for the Sustainable Funding Grant of up to £50,000.

Southern Brooks Southern Brooks’ Filton worker Katie Donovan updated the council on work in the town in the last few weeks. She said there were plans for: • Setting up a group to help women who had suffered domestic violence, along the lines of a similar group in Patchway; • Running a coffee morning for isolated parents to give them some assistance with family life. She said this was needed as some parents did not cross the minimum threshold for help at SureStart;

“The closing date was Friday 26th July; we hope to hear a definitive answer by mid September. If successful the Conygre ward will have a bus for Filton Avenue. “If successful the steering group see an opportunity to do a ‘Filton Bus Trail’ working in partnership with the children and young people of Filton as part of a Dreamscheme project.” Cycle speedway Councillors were asked about the cycle speedway track which is no longer used for the sport. Residents complained it was not being maintained. However councillors said there might be an opportunity in opening it up to help children learn how to cycle and pledged to look into the matter further Meeting venue change There are no meetings in August but the September full council meeting, on September 24, will be held at Bethany Hall in Conygre, starting at 7.30pm.

Golfer Will tees off against world’s best

A Filton boy who started swinging a golf club at the age of four is taking on the best young players in the world this month – and is still only 11 years old. Will Lewis, who has just left Year 6 at Charborough Road Primary School and will be joining Orchard Academy in September, has been invited to compete in the US Kids World Championship in North Carolina. The young golfer’s skill has been getting him noticed locally for some years, but with competitions taking him

to Wales and Scotland more recently he is earning recognition from much further afield. His dad Darren said: “Will seemed to have a natural talent for the game even at an early age. He would spend hours in the garden with a plastic club hitting balls, but he had a real love for this so just kept on swinging.” Will first began playing on 9-hole courses at The Bristol Golf Club, then joined Long Ashton Golf Club at the age of seven where his talent caught the eye of the club’s professionals and got his first official handicap of 36.

Boys make club proud on green

It was off to play Kendleshire again recently and, despite a depleted team selection, we mustered up six lucky lads to represent Filton Golf Club Juniors, writes team coach Adam Saunders. The team was as follows (and all scores will be in this order): George Hilliam, Henry van der Hoest, Billy Wilde, Ray Davey, James Saunders and Dan le Bas. The pre-match talk was of keeping calm, playing with pride while wearing the shirt, doing the best you could and not giving up. I (their nervous coach) sat in the best vantage point at the Kendleshire, which is on the 4th tee, as this allows you to watch

Playing in the junior team saw Will take on boys twice his age, winning as many matches as he lost. Last year he competed in the Wee Wonders regional qualifier at Dewstow Golf Club in Chepstow and a win took him to the grand final of the British Championship at St Andrews in Scotland, where he came eighth. An invitation to play at the European Championships at Craigielaw Golf Club in Scotland then followed where he finished 13th out of 54 boys in his age group from all over Europe. George Hilliam, Henry van der Hoest, Billy Wilde, Ray Davey, James Saunders and Dan le Bas

other holes throughout the round. The boys set off in good fashion and following the 4th hole the scores were 1up; 2up; level; 1 down; 3 up; 1 down . Looking good at this point. By the end of 7th it was 2up; 4up; level; level; 3up; 1up. Starting to smile and relax now, not quite so nervous (that’s me by the way). I can't explain why (as a coach and parent) I get so wound up. The boys all seem to take it

in their stride very well, once mums, dads and even grandads find something else to do apart from watch! End of 10th still looking good: 1down; 5up; 2down; 1up; 4up; 2up. At this point I was thinking we might just pull this off! If you have played Kendleshire Golf Club you will know that the players disappear for a while and it is during this period that I was left biting my nails to the quick.

Will Lewis,11 It was this placing that earned him a chance to compete in America at Pinehurst Golf Resort from August 1-3. Will’s current handicap is 11 and he aims to be in single figures by the start of next year. Finally, the boys reappeared on 16th, still in contention, but much closer now, leaving the match hanging by a thread until the final match on the final hole. The final scores go like this: Lost 4&3; Won 2&1; Lost 2&1; Lost 2&1; Won 5&4. And finally, bringing up the rear, was Dan who played the first complete 18 holes of his life (14 & 9 holes before this). Going up the last he was 1up and just needed a half to halve the match. Could he do it? He held his nerve and he and his opposition partner were both down for 8; Hole halved, match halved. I couldn't believe the result as I have to admit I wasn't expecting it. I can't tell you how proud I am of these boys. Well behaved, well mannered and wearing Filton Team shirts. What more do you want? Well done, boys. See you on the tee.

Filton gets a brand new street

Filton has a new street after a gated development of five homes was officially opened earllier this month. Ernest Close, just off 10th Avenue, was built by property developer Ernie Arathoon. Now South Glos inspectors say the development is of such a high standard that they plan to nominate it for the LABC 2014 Building Excellence awards. The official opening was attended by town councillors, builder who had worked on the project and South Glos chairman Ian Bolton. Ernest Close has three fourbed homes and two three-bed homes which are now being marketed by Franklin Cole. Mr Arathoon, a property developer for 25 years and director of Bristol City FC, said he wanted to create a development which would feel secure for residents and where

H

children could play without the fear of traffic. Town councillor Brian Freeguard said the gated aspect was an attractive feature and that the development had good access to schools, nurseries and other town facilities. Mr Arathoon was supported at the opening ceremony by his

wife Karen, daughter Natalie and son Ronnie. It is a family run development company. Ernie project manages with Natalie on construction and Karen designs all things interior with Natalie. Youngest son Ronnie has worked as a labourer in between studying at SWADA.

Car boot buyers help Jaye on way to taking first steps The family of a four-year-old boy who has cerebral palsy have been given hope that he will one day be able to walk unaided. Jaye Cook has been told he is suitable for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, an operation carried out by Frenchay Hospital. However, the procedure will cost £30,000 and the family has begun fundraising in earnest – attending Shield Road Primary’s car boot sale last month. Jaye’s grandparents Diane and Roger Cook, who lived in Filton for 34 years, have held several sales along with his auntie Jenny and are now organising more events as well as setting up a fundraising page for the operation. Mrs Cook, who now lives in Stoke Lodge, said: “Jaye is a really happy little chap, he loves all the superheroes like Spiderman, Superman and Iron Man. He has two older sisters and a baby brother and he loves to help his little brother. He would love to run and play with him when he is bigger. Wouldn’t it be great if Jaye could take his first steps when his little brother takes his.” Jaye will be five in September

Jaye Cook needs an operation to enable him to walk unaided; his family, right, raising funds towards the £30,000 cost of the operation at Shield Road Primary School’s car boot sale last month and will be starting at school in Kingswood where he lives with mum Melanie, dad Martin, sisters Daisy and Macy and little brother Sonny. He was born 10 weeks premature and was diagnosed

with cerebral palsy at 18 months old. His family were told just over a month ago that he was suitable for the surgery, which involves separating nerves as they enter the spinal column. The family have set up a

fundraising page through the charity Tree of Hope, which supports families with children who need surgery, treatment, therapy or equipment. To visit the page and donate, go to www. justgiving.com/jaye2walk.

First sale is hailed a huge success The organisers of Shield Road Primary’s first ever car boot and table-top sale say the event was an all-round success, raising more than £400 for the school and bringing the community together. A wide range of items were on sale from car boots and stands on July 20, including cakes and a very popular plant stall, and visitors also enjoyed a bouncy castle, raffle, cream teas, burgers and more. One of the organisers Kirsten Gooding said: “It was a beautiful warm day and the sun shone for us. There was a great community atmosphere and a good selection of all age groups as there was something for everyone.

“We are truly overwhelmed by the support and positive feedback we received from those who attended this event. “It was very hard work for all those involved, from the Friends of Shield Road to the parents and grandparents who each gave up their day to support our school. “We achieved what we set out to do, bringing the community together while raising £458.89 for school play equipment.” The Friends of Shield Road Primary are now looking forward to the next car boot sale in the autumn. The group is run by a small number of parents who meet at 6.30pm every second Monday of the month and new members are welcome.

News Trust launches Work Academy

A local NHS trust has launched a scheme to help people of all ages get back into work. The Work Academy has been set up by North Bristol NHS Trust to offer up to eight weeks’ work experience in a range of roles across the trust. The scheme, in partnership with Job Centre Plus, is open to people who have been unemployed for a while or teenagers who are not in employment or education, covering ages 14 to 65. Ten people will be enrolled at the Work Academy at any one time and they will also be given training in writing CVs and interview skills. Jane Hadfield, head of learning and development at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “The aim is to increase the range of apprenticeship opportunities available to recruit people into the NHS, and provide career progression once recruited.”

Man fined for selling copied films at work A Rolls-Royce employee who was caught selling counterfeit films through his workplace in Filton has been prosecuted after pleading guilty to a number of offences. Martin Hann, of Palmers Court, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and to pay costs of £2,354.31 after being convicted of nine offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994 at Northavon Magistrates' Court on July 15. The case came to the attention of South Gloucestershire Trading Standards officers in November 2011 after an anonymous tip-off from Crimestoppers. A warrant was executed at Mr Hann's home, which uncovered more than 1,000 copied films and film covers. There were multiple copies of

a number of films, which Trading Standards officers said further confirmed to them they were intended for sale. Councillor Claire Young, chair of the Communities Committee, said: "I hope this case raises awareness to both employers and employees that the sale of counterfeit goods in the workplace is illegal and will not be tolerated. "Mr Hann is being forced to pay both financially and through the loss of 120 hours of his free time. This should act as a significant deterrent to others engaging in this activity.” The workplace is referred to by Trading Standards officers as the "hidden marketplace", as the sale of counterfeit items there is often not reported. Mark Pullin, Strong, Safer Communities Manager, said: “I

support the action taken by Trading Standards in this matter. “This is an example of an individual who has taken advantage of the familiar surroundings of his workplace and the trust of his colleagues to engage in criminal activity. “I strongly encourage anyone who is aware of similar activity occurring in the workplace or other social situations to report the matter to Trading Standards for investigation,” he added. Anyone who comes across counterfeit goods being sold can contact Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08456 040506 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. More information and advice on a range of Trading Standards issues can be found at www. southglos.gov.uk.

No entry

I see in Councillor Hutchinson’s roads update that there a proposal to make Northville Road to Cropthorne Road ‘No Entry’. I should declare an interest as I live in the middle of Northville Road and find it convenient to go down Cropthore Road to access Filton Avenue and Filton Road from Eden Grove. The main point against making Cropthorne Road ‘No Entry’ is that the recycling teams use this turning to deal with properties in Cropthorne Road in South Gloucestershire. The through traffic on Northville Road might be eased if the 7.5T weight restriction sign on Northville Road was at Filton Avenue rather than Cropthorne Road, so that lorries have a viable alternative rather than just continuing down the rest of Northville Road. However, seeing how little notice is taken of the ‘No Right Turn’ signs on Filton Road (even at Eden Grove), I wonder if road signs serve any purpose at all. Nigel de Bray

Big squeeze

Yet another garden is about to be built on in Filton. Why is it that every time a property is sold that has a decent family size garden, a builder buys it to squeeze in numerous flats? The latest one is on the corner of Branksome Drive and Station Road where the builder is hoping to put up 4 flats. It is so difficult to buy anywhere with a reasonable sized garden these days. Not only is there the loss of garden space but it will add to the parking problems already faced by residents as well as causing potential dangers

to pedestrians and road users. Various children walk that route to and from school and if planning permission is granted they will have more cars to deal with on a corner that is already difficult to cross. Please help to stop the garden grabbing by objecting to the overdevelopment of our town. HB, a concerned resident.

Real leadership

Congratulations And Thanks To Bill Moore for having the initial idea of creating a “Community Garden” in Filton. Having been on the community garden team, I would like to thank Bill for his drive and leadership on this project and the support and hard work of the rest of the team. Also we are grateful for the financial support of Filton Town Council. I would like to highlight the fact that yet again Filton residents have shown what can be done when working together as a group, as was the case during the debate on the “Fields In Trust”. Dave Mikkelson and Darren Nation organised Filton residents, and the “first idea” of “The Fields In Trust” was born. This probably shows, some of the best ideas DO COME from the public and I would hope more will be done in the future to improve FILTON for its residents. Elizabeth Elsden

Please pick it up!

I believe it’s Bristol City Council who is mowing Monks Park much more frequently this year than last? Huge improvement, much appreciated. Makes picking up and disposing of dog waste so much easier and complete…but not, of course, for the useless, waste of space people who still don’t! What’s the excuse now then? It’s too heavy to lift? Got a bone in your leg? Maybe it had a fly with attitude sitting on it and you dared not approach?! :o) Dog Walker

Mandate gone

Filton is not exempt from the occasional shake-up in the handling of its current affairs. Over the years the Council has been Labour controlled apart from the occasions where Conservatives have taken charge for a while. Recently however, there have been “second thoughts.” Several of its councillors have chosen to “go Independent” detaching themselves from the political scene. Most of the problems referred to the council bore scant relation to politics. Yet councillors were elected on a political mandate. By “going Independent”, that has been set aside. Before these changes occurred there was a growing tendency to inter-relate. “Bickering!” ...

I

know not of the workings and processes of the Town and Gloucestershire Councils however I write with regard to recent work undertaken in Rodney Crescent in relation to the re-surfacing of the pavements a few weeks ago. This work was undertaken by what I presume was a private contractor, again, presumably provided with a contract by one of the said councils. Work began by preparing the existing surface which included the ‘blowing’ of debris, stones and grit into the road and once prepared was followed with a coating for which the residents were advised not to walk or drive on for an hour. Despite refraining from using the surface for more than the advised period, it began to show signs of being churned up as my car was driven over it to get in and out of my drive. Several weeks later and the surface continues to be churned up as cars use the surface throughout the locality. I would therefore question whether the surface material is fit for purpose and whilst it

leading roles in the fight to retain it. I feel sure that political party directors will view this drift to “Independence” with concern. “Is it temporary?” they will ask. ”A mere threat of defiance?” “Or will it continue to the next election?” Time alone will tell! There must be a reason for the defections. It needs to be thoroughly reviewed. Douglas Daniels, Cllr Filton Town Council

Safe return

A big thank you to Mr Antony who returned my purse to my home after it accidentally dropped from my rucksack on way to work. Thanks a million. A perk of living in Filton! Anjali Soodan

Ken Hoare: This will link other parts of Bristol and will be cheaper than the bus and more accessability for the elderly and infirm. Roger Hutchinson: It will be an integral part of the proposed new Metro and link us in with the suburban network, including the re-opening of a station at Filton North and a new station at Henbury. The way these campaigners talk about it would lead people to believe that the local authorities have or are doing nothing about it. The opposite is the truth, we have been working hard to persuade Government that

Man of the People

A new column on the things that REALLY matter to Filton people looked cosmetically acceptable on day one, I cannot foresee how the material will last anything like as long as would Tarmac as used in days gone by. I can only presume that in these times of financial constraints that out-sourcing this work was deemed best use of tax payers money, however, I question in my mind whether value for money has been achieved. It may just be that we have outsourced this work without providing a suitable, clearly defined specification in which case, should similar work be planned in other areas there may be time to re-asses the specification and re-evaluate the life expectancy of the material and cost of replacement to see if the current outsourced model does achieve the aims of both the council and tax payer. Working on the assumption that those within the council

organisation may have been ill advised regarding the specification, I can’t wait to see the results of the specification

Labour had approximately 53% control; Conservatives 31%; whilst “Others” held 16%. Currently that has now all changed. Labour and Conservative Councillors have witnessed their control cut by half. Re-branded as “Independents” has given them 42% council control. The change to “Independents” seems to have enabled Councillors to work more closely together. There is however no doubt that the closure of the airfield and it runway has taken the heart out of Filton. Most view it as a “step in the wrong direction.” Several councillors have taken

funding should be allocated to this. Helen Monk: Fantastic!! Just spent Friday and Saturday running round London from North to East to West and nothing is a hassle. If only we had these covering Bristol...Keep going for it.. Sue Whitfield: I travelled this line when they ran the special last year. It would be a great benefit to the local community, both for pleasure trips and commuter. In fact as we were waiting for the bus by Filton College on Saturday, I though how great it would be if the station by the airfield reopened and then we could easily get to Clifton Triangle and The Downs. for the road design for Filton for which I have complete confidence in the council to shortly execute to alleviate the current congestion problem and cope with the future increased traffic congestion as the vast housing complex’s are completed at Abbey Wood, Charlton Hayes and upon our beloved airfield. In the meantime, in addition to my current tax contribution, I, like a vast section of Filton residents who own a car will continue to budget and fund the replacement of wheel bearings and other related parts of my car as I drive along our roads over the many pot holes, sunken drainage covers and ‘access to sewerage and drainage systems’ – known as manhole covers for most of my un-politically correct days. I will of course continue to take responsibility for my own budget and finances and will now adjust these accordingly to cope with the many stone chips which I may incur since, several weeks later, I see no sign of a road sweeper to remove the vast amount of debris in the road created at the start of the re-surfacing process.

Crowds turn out to celebrate ‘Best of Bristol’ at fete The sun shone on Charborough Road for this year’s Best of Bristol-themed summer fete, which has brought in an impressive £4,500 for the school. The event was enjoyed by families, school staff, governors and the community as they celebrated all things Bristolian. Games such as Balloon Fiesta, Coin Cabot, Brunel’s Nose and Where’s Wallace? provided a Bristolian twist on the usual fete entertainments and many children enjoyed the kite workshops run by local expert Nick James, a veteran of the city's kite festival. The arena saw performances from the school dance group and Blue Flame Cheerleaders, while GKR Karate invited people up to have a go. Charborough Road’s very own Gromit made his first public appearance - hopefully he’ll be spotted out and about more over the next few weeks. Paul, a father of one of the school's pupils and who was attending and helping at his first Charborough Road fete, said: “There was a fantastic atmosphere and the whole thing was well run, well organised and well supported.”

The event is organised by the Friends of School (FOS) who would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved and to everyone who came along and enjoyed the sunshine. The group also thanked GKN Aerospace, the main sponsor for the event and all the other local businesses that gave sponsorship too. Some of the money raised will be used to fund the PlayPod that the children are already enjoying in the playground while the rest will be used by the school during the coming year on various resources and extra-curricular activities.

Abbeywood School/ Charborough Road School

Year 5 students have been coming to Abbeywood for science enrichment activities during term 5 & 6. This is to primarily enhance their chemistry, physics and biology skills in preparation for transition to secondary school. They have used their investigative skills as to ‘how science works’. They have also learnt to bring creativity into the classroom. All students have obtained their microscope and bunsen burner licence. Above all they have had serious fun!! The sessions have ended with a spaghetti & marshmallow challenge, with teams competing against each other for a trophy which was presented by Judith Mee, Associate Headteacher.

Thinking of Selling? Contact Bristol’s Local Expert Detached? Semidetached? Maybe a terraced house? And then there’s the question of how many bedrooms. A recent survey conducted by Relocation Agent Network asked its estate agent members which properties are currently the most soughtafter by homebuyers – a good indication for potential home sellers wanting to enter the market. According to Relocation Agent Network, over 60% of estate agents surveyed said that

semi-detached houses are by far the most soughtafter amongst buyers. The next most popular are terraced houses, with nearly a fifth of Network agents indicating so. When asked what property sizes are most in demand, the vast majority of respondents (80%) said it was three bedroom properties. Network members also report improvements in the property market, with 80% of respondents having sold more properties in the last two months compared

to the same time last year. When considering Relocation Agent Network’s findings, it would appear that more sellers are needed to meet demand. Ross Kieran, Director of Ocean said “Whether you’ve got a one or five bedroom property,

terraced or detached, we are Relocation Agent Network’s appointed Local Expert in Bristol and have the expertise to guide our customers through the selling process. “Our Network membership also means that we have access to potential out of town buyers moving into the area, providing an additional avenue for you to sell your home. Visit www. relocation-agent-network.co.uk for more information on what our Network membership really means or contact us directly 0800 65 25 446.”

The last time I posted in the FiltonVoice I mentioned that I was due to go on Pilgrimage to the Holy Land or Israel as it is known today. I and the other pilgrims had a fantastic time. During our visit we went to many places of religious significance to Moslems, Jews and Christians. Very early in the Pilgrimage, as we entered maybe our second or third ancient Church, I noticed one of my fellow pilgrims disappear from the group only to re-appear about ten minutes later. Curiosity got the better of me and I asked what she was up to. ‘I’m taking photos of the ‘sacristy’’ she revealed, slightly embarrassed, as if she had

with Father Tom Finnegan St Teresa’s Church, Filton and St Vincent’s Church, Southmead revealed a deep and dark secret! Sacristies are rooms, large and small in most if not all Christian places of worship, sometimes they are called vestries. They are the places where ministers, pastors or priests prepare for the services ahead. It is the place where robes, books and sacred vessels are kept for the worship that takes place in the Church. I have been a priest for eighteen years, and have been in many sacristies, but to be honest I always took them for granted and never took a second look. But her enthusiasm for them

was infectious. By the end of our pilgrimage, we had visited nearly every sacristy in the Holy Land and discovered sacristies both simple and grand, with many wonderful objects both ancient and modern. Often we had to ask for special permission to enter these special places because they often hold precious and priceless artefacts. And to top it all off, we met some wonderful ‘sacristans’, the people who look after these sacred places and love them. I saw the sacristy in a whole new light. My new encounter with sacristies, with my eyes opened, taught me a lesson. Never take anything for

granted. Always look upon what is most familiar to you as if it is special and to be revered. This of course includes not just places, but people too! How often do we take people for granted? How often do we just presume they will be there for us? How often do we fail to appreciate the people who are right in front of us? Family, friends and yes, even strangers.

with Michael Parry of Vets4Pets in Filton

The importance of regular vaccinations At Vets4Pets Filton we like to work with local pet owners to encourage preventative health care. Regular vaccinations are an important way of keeping your pet healthy and protecting against several nasty diseases such as distemper for dogs and leukaemia and flu for cats. As with human health, it’s often easier to prevent your pet picking up these diseases than it is to treat them. Michael Parry, Veterinary Surgeon and Practice Partner at Vets4Pets Filton says: “As well as helping sick pets, we work with owners on pet healthcare advice, from choosing the right flea and worming to education on vaccinations that are an important part in keeping pets healthy and happy.”

Michael continues, “Vaccinations help to protect against nasty diseases that can be life threatening and sometimes people don’t realise that pet vaccines need repeating every year to remain effective.” To help maintain vaccinations Vets4Pets Filton offer a Vac4Life plan which, for a one-off payment of just £99, will give your pet free annual boosters and annual health assessments for the rest of their life. Pop into the practice or call 0117 969 8400 to find out more information on our Vac4Life plan and other things you can do to maintain pet health.

Charity flying high as kite festival announces support A Filton-based charity has been given a lift with the news it will be the official charity partner for this year’s Bristol International Kite Festival. Great Western Air Ambulance Charity is currently aiming to raise £250,000 of extra funding through its Movin’ on Up campaign to pay for a new Eurocopter EC 135 helicopter to serve the 2.1 million people it covers across the region. The charity will be at the Ashton Court Estate during the festival on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, where visitors will be able to see the current Bölkow 105 helicopter on display, meet the crew and charity staff, catch the team in the main arena, and find out more about its fundraising campaigns. GWAAC was also the kite festival’s chosen charity in 2011 and Patricia Gaitan, fundraising manager for GWAAC, said: “We are delighted to once again be chosen as the official charity partner for this year’s Bristol International Kite Festival. “This event marks the start of a month of key fundraising activity for the charity, which culminates in National Air Ambulance Week at the end of September, and we are looking forward to sharing the importance of the work that we do with visitors to the event – their support will help to keep our air ambulance flying.”

Representatives of GWAAC and Bristol International Kite Festival celebrate their partnership at this year’s event To find out more about the Avril Baker, Kite Festival Kite Festival, please visit the organiser said: “We are really website www.kite-festival. proud to be supporting Great Western Air Ambulance Charity org.uk. for the third year. “At our last festival in 2011 the helicopter wowed the crowds as it flew in and out of Ashton Court and visitors really enjoyed looking round the aircraft and meeting some of the dedicated crew and the charity team who do such a fantastic job. “We hope that through the generosity of visitors to the Kite Festival we can help the charity raise some of the vital funds they need to replace the current helicopter so that the air ambulance can continue to fly, save lives and provide an even better service to people who need emergency care and help.”

Swimming lessons: Can we AFFORD not to? On the news lately we have been hearing about how many children cannot swim? More than half of children aged 7 to 11 are unable to swim 25 metres unaided, which means 1.1 million primary school children are not safe in and around water. Learning to swim at an early age can go on to save your child’s life drowning is amongst the leading causes of accidental death of children and young people in England. One in 10 parents say their child only swims on holiday - presenting clear risks in terms of ability, water confidence and safety - especially when 52% of parents do not think or are not sure if their child could swim to safety if they found themselves in danger in open water. 39% of parents also told the Amateur Swimming Association that their child was not in any type of swimming lessons. His Royal Highness, The Duke of Cambridge and patron of the English Schools Swimming Association, has recorded a short video calling for school swimming to be accessible for all children at all primary schools. Check it out on ASA Swimming website www.swimming.org/asa Now you have read this are you thinking …. “What can l do?” Well, here’s your answer. August, 2013

A knockout night in Filton!

There are many people out there who are keen photographers, some of whom specialise in a certain type of photography. Myself, I enjoy sporting events, and for the last five years have been photographing the Bristol Academy Flyers Basketball teams games, and more recently with the Athletics, Netball and Table Tennis Academies at SGS College. On Tuesday the 16th July, I was asked to attend something a little different, a boxing tournament between some of the UK’s young, amateur talent. Members of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) Scheme from across England came to SGS College, WISE Campus’ Olympus theatre to take on a Wales Select Squad, over 9 bouts. The AASE team included boxers from the Downend Amateur Boxing Club and SGS Boxing Academy, coached by Craig Turner, a colleague of mine at the college.

A good crowd turned out to watch this event, and with tickets priced at £10 adults / £5 child, the paying public certainly got value for money. The evening got under way with three support bouts which had everyone on the edge of their seats with some quality punches going in from both corners In bout one, Downend’s Luke Saward claim victory number over Cwmbran’s Ryan Kennery in a great opening contest. Luke Willcox, also from the Downend club narrowly failed to add a second local victory losing to Jake Tinklin from Tredegar, whilst bout three went to Byron James of Sommerton Rascals, with a majority verdict over Cwmcarns Ryan Pole. The AASE Team then took to the ring winning 7 to 2 over the Welsh side. Local wins came from Tom Williams (SGS / Downend) and Max Mudway (SGS / The Factory), whilst Ben and Jake Demmery (SGS / Downend) narrowly lost out on

points in their bouts. Craig Turner, AASE Boxing Coach at SGS College, said: ‘We are delighted that our college was selected to host the tournament on behalf of the Amateur Boxing Association of England. The Olympus Theatre is a terrific venue and has played host to numerous boxing events in the past. ‘We pulled out all of the stops to make sure this event puts AASE Boxing alongside the rest of the UK’s best student sporting events. I’d like to thank the Welsh team for making the journey and all the officials who helped make it happen.’ I would strongly recommend fans of boxing to go along to the next event hosted at WISE, where you will be treated to an excellent display of Amateur Boxing, and a great evening out. The annual St Vallier AFC presentation evening took place recently at the Memorial Ground. The event provided the opportunity to recognise the achievements of the different teams over the past season, and former Bristol City player, Cole Skuse, was invited to present some of the awards. Every squad player from each team received a trophy, with special awards for the Most Improved Player, Manager’s Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Clubman of the Year. The most successful team of the past twelve months has been the Under 11s, managed by Dave Wilding. They won the Hanham Minor League C Division title, remaining unbeaten all season. They also reached the cup final where they lost to Almondsbury. As a result, they have been promoted to the Avon Youth League Division 1 where they will play the new 9v9 format. In his first season as manager, Glenn Haynes achieved an 8th place finish with his Under 9s team in the Hanham Minor League B Division, and they will retain their B Division status for next year. Led by manager, Steve Millman, the Under 10s finished 6th in the Hanham Minor League Division D. They also retain their division status for next season, and like the Under 11s, will have to play the new 9v9 format. Chairman of the club and manager of the Under 12s, Ray Edwards, took his team to 7th place in the Avon Youth League Division 2 and they too retain their status. The Under 6s, 7s and 8s are not in competitive leagues, but from the results of the friendly matches they have played, the future looks positive. The evening also included an auction of various lots which had been kindly donated to the club by various retail outlets, sport and leisure clubs and by Bristol Rovers and Bristol Rugby. Over £600.00 was raised. Next year, St Vallier AFC will celebrate its 40th year since its creation in 1974. Sadly, two of the original founders, Frank Baker and Jon Councell, both passed away recently. Both men were well respected members of the youth leagues. By Wilson McKelvie

Could you change the life of a vulnerable child or young person?

Children’s charity TACT Fostering is looking for new foster carers in the West Country for vulnerable children and young people in need. In particular, safe and supportive homes are needed for children and young people over 12 years, and also for young people on remand, with physical or learning disabilities, and parent-and-child foster placements. There is no such thing as an ideal foster carer. If you have a spare bedroom and time and energy, then you could provide a young person with a happy home. We are keen to hear from people from all backgrounds, especially single men and women, gay men, lesbians, couples and people from Black and Minority Ethnic communities. Team get on their bikes in memory of Paul Staff and customers from Sainsbury’s East Filton have raised £300 for the British Heart foundation by completing a sponsored bike ride in store. The event was to commemorate the death of Paul Morgan, a regional manager for Sainsbury’s. Paul died while completing a bike ride for Children in Need and a year on colleagues wanted to do something to raise money for the charity, which was nominated by his fiancé, Laura. Lucy Saunders from British Heart Foundation visited the store to collect the donation and explained that the work that the BHF does covers a wide area and any donations are gratefully received and help immensely.

Legion branch will mark 85 years with military day Military vehicles from many different eras and a trio of 1940s-style singers will be among the attractions at an event being held to mark 85 years of a the Royal British Legion branch which serves Filton. The Tri-Services Military Event on Sunday, September 1, at the Mile Straight Sports and Social Club, New Road, Stoke Gifford, is being organised by the Stoke Gifford branch of the organisation to mark its milestone and to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal. There will be around 30 restored military vehicles on display supplied by The Military Vehicle Trust and representing different periods of history, conflicts and countries. The event will also welcome a number of Sea, Marine, Army and Air Cadet units from the Bristol area, which will each have their own displays and will be giving demonstrations during the day. The Royal British Legion's Riders branch will also be attending with their bikes to support the fundraising effort.

The MSSSC, which has adopted the Royal British Legion as its charity and is providing the site for free, will be opening its bar to provide refreshments and there will be a catering stand supplying hot food. Stoke Gifford RBL spokesman David Bell said: “We are delighted that the MSSSC has adopted the Royal British Legion as its Charity, we look forward to working with them. The Club and its new facilities are magnificent and they are such an asset to the local community. "The 85th Anniversary event on the 1st September should be such a great event and will help us raise more money for our welfare work.

“Our Poppy Appeal coordinators Terry Webber and John Moloney have set a branch target of £40,000 for the current year’s Poppy Appeal.” MSSSC Chairman Paul Bold said: “When one of our members approached us with his proposals for the British Legion to be our charity of choice, we were delighted to be supporting a fantastic British institution that is not only synonymous with bravery and caring, but also does

so much good for the armed forces both old and new." The Stoke Gifford branch was formed in 1928 and has won the RBL Gloucestershire County Marling Cup for most efficient small branch for two years running. The Tri-Services Military Event will run from 10.30am until 5pm on September 1 and all entry fees and donations to collections and through trade stands will go to the Poppy Appeal.

with Filton Sgt Steve Ives I hope you’ve all enjoyed our few weeks of ‘proper’ summer this year. Now that the schools have broken up for their long break no doubt many of you will be off on that long-awaited holiday. So I’m sorry to have to mention it, but while you’re packing and trying to make sure you’ve remembered everything you need for your time away, please remember to think about security at home. There are a number of things I’d recommend you do to reduce the chance of an unwanted visitor: • Make your property look as occupied as possible with light timers or ask a helpful

neighbour to pop in to close curtains and put the bins out on collection day • Be careful who you tell you’re going – that includes being careful about what you post on social media • Make sure potential thieves can’t see your valuables through the window • Register all your belongings on www.immobilise.com • Lock all your tools and ladders away securely in your garage or shed • Join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme While you’re at home, if the sun comes out again, please remember to secure doors and windows if you’re not in

There is plenty of advice and guidance on our website, so please have a look and have a think about your home security. I’m happy to report that the number of burglaries in the area continues to fall, but that’s not much comfort if happens to you. We can always do more and between us reduce crime and improve the safety within our community even more. Have a happy and crime free holiday. Having watched the flowers blossom during spring, it is now time to weed through your wardrobe and pick out those floral print statement pieces from last summer, for floral has made its annual return! Get back to growing your own fresh bouquet of this month’s style. Whether it consists of bright and bold hues of oranges and reds, or pastel, vintage shades of yellow and blue, just be sure to avoid the same material as your Gran’s old sofa and matching curtains! Here are some of my favourite floral pieces available at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway, to enhance that summer glow we’ve all caught during Bristol’s recent heatwave!

August: Home cinema I thought that as autumn is on its way, you might be thinking about long nights in, watching TV or films. For many people, apart from going to the cinema, the ultimate choice of film experience is to have a home cinema where you can enjoy your own food and drink in the comfort of your own four walls. But you might think it is far too expensive, perhaps costing thousands of pounds. Well it used to be but now you can buy a high definition projector for less than £400. If you already have a DVD player in a laptop or PC the only other thing you need is some surround sound speakers which you can get for less than £50. If you want to play Blu-ray films, you can even buy a Blu-ray player for

your PC for less than £30. All you then need is a flat wall which is painted as close to white as possible and you can have a pretty good cinema experience! Your ‘screen’ could be as big as 80100 inches! So for less than £500 you can have the full cinema experience. You just need to choose some new films! Of course if you need any help getting the right equipment or setting this up, please contact us on 0117 969 8767 or visit us in our shop on the corner of Filton Ave and the A4174. Advert, Page 6

Laura’s inspired to ride by charities improving health Two good causes have reason to celebrate after a Filton fundraiser completed a challenging 65-mile bike ride. Laura Crouch tackled the Savernake Sizzler cycling challenge in the Savernake Forest, Wiltshire, on July 21 to support two charities that are close to her heart. Laura chose children’s medical research charity Sparks and The COB Foundation, which supports people suffering bladder illness, a condition she is affected by herself and which made taking on the cycle ride all the more challenging. After the event, Laura said: “It was extremely difficult due to the heat and my health conditions and some very steep hills but I made it round.” She added: “I have suffered from chronic bladder pain, also known as interstitial cystitis, for the last five years and it has had a real effect on my life and my health. I have had many procedures and treatments along the way and know how difficult

it can be for people with this condition who find it hard to leave the house. “People don’t like to talk about bladder conditions and it can leave people feeling very lonely. The COB Foundation provide support to people who are really struggling and also fund research so we can try and beat this condition.” Explaining her support for Sparks, Laura said one in 30 babies was born with a medical condition which may affect them for life. She said: “Their goal is for every child to be born healthy and stay healthy and the money I raise will help us to continue their pioneering medical research and enable them to touch the lives of those children who need our help.” To donate to the causes, people can visit Laura’s fundraising pages https:// mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ lauracrouch5 for the COB Foundation or http://www. justgiving.com/Laura-Crouch5 for Sparks.

More pleasing is Jonathan Slinger’s portrayal of the odious and cowardly Parolles, an inveterate liar who is quite prepared to betray his fellow soldiers to save his own neck. Using the typewriter upon which his defamatory statements were recorded as a block for his mock beheading is inspired, given that his name translates as ‘Words’. The ultimate success of the play hinges upon the actress in the role being able to make you believe in her passion, and unfortunately Joanna Horton’s portrayal falls somewhat short. Her Helena lacks that witchy spark that becomes evident when she cures the King of France of his apparently fatal illness, and the fact that she tends to recite her lines rather than say them doesn’t help.

That Bertram resents having to marry Helena even though she is beautiful and otherwise universally admired can be explained by the fact that he is
