ear Friends and Colleagues, When I was hired as St. Andrew’s new Head of School 24 years ago, my first Board Chair asked me to write down a few initial goals for the opening years of my headship. At that point the Postoak Campus was three years old, with a new main academic building, our charming Kiplinger House, a singlecourt aluminum gymnasium, and an older building with a small dance studio and a workout room on the site of the current Lower School.

My initial goals didn’t include any of the beautiful new buildings that now grace our campus. The school didn’t have the endowment, balance sheet, or fundraising capacity back then to support additional construction, but that wasn’t the only reason. I chose to come to St. Andrew’s because of the collaborative and positive culture I could feel among the faculty, staff, and trustees who supported them. It was a culture built to answer a question that our former Assistant Headmaster John Holden often asked: “Who are we doing this for?” [To which the faculty would respond in unison: “The students!”]

And yet, back then St. Andrew’s couldn’t match our peer schools’ salaries, wasn’t able to fund an extensive professional development program, and therefore had difficulty keeping our strong early-career teachers. So my first goal for my headship was to “nurture and strengthen the faculty and staff.”

That early goal has become an enduring promise. Hiring, mentoring, and keeping emotionally intelligent, growth-minded teachers and administrators is the most impactful work school leaders do, because our students’ well-being and growth depend on the quality and care of their faculty – especially now. It’s never been harder to find and retain great teachers and school leaders. Hiring pools are thinner than ever, and average tenure within most private and public schools has declined markedly in the last two decades. Nationwide, this scarcity and turnover of talent keep thoughtful heads of school and their Board leaders awake at night.

Except at St. Andrew’s. As you will read in the cover story article on our schoolwide Challenge Success survey data, our annual faculty and staff retention rate is 95%, and more than two dozen of my colleagues have served St. Andrew’s with me for more than 20 years. Almost every academic administrator has helped to guide St. Andrew’s for more than a decade, due to our institution-wide focus on leadership development and succession planning.

Because we don’t accept or experience the faculty and leadership “churn” that afflicts so many other schools, we can invest more of our collective time and energy on our long-term priorities: career-long research and improvement of teaching and learning; innovative and high-quality academic and extracurricular programs, lifelong connections with our students and alumni, and the next generations of campus improvements. Because of our mutual trust and shared knowledge, St. Andrew’s realizes its visions and goals more swiftly and happily

than any other school I have experienced.

How has St. Andrew’s become a destination school for exceptional educators?

Competitive salaries and benefits have certainly helped, and the global reach and impact of our Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning have attracted first-rate talent for available positions. Most important, however, is the culture of our faculty and staff. Our veterans feel pride and gratitude for a community that has offered them unwavering support and growth for decades, and they have passed those values and dedication to our early and mid-career colleagues who will sustain St. Andrew’s years from now. So many institutions struggle with the depth of employee engagement, collaboration, and purpose. The St. Andrew’s faculty and staff model those qualities every day, year after year.

Amid the distractions and pressures of our fragmented world, children need wise and growth-minded adults more than ever. Schools need to joyfully engage their students, to tap into their intrinsic motivation to collaborate and learn. Fulfilling students’ promise depends on the adults who know them and inspire their growth from preschool to college. Led by my exceptional colleagues, I’m confident St. Andrew’s will fulfill that promise for generations of Lions to come.

Kurt Sinclair embodied the St. Andrew’s mission

Former faculty member Kurt Sinclair, who spent 36 years at the school as a teacher, mentor, and advisor, died on July 25, 2025 at the age of 67 after a years-long battle with cancer.

Sinclair was one of the greatest teachers in St. Andrew’s history. During his 36 years at St. Andrew’s he imbued more than a thousand students with a passion for physics and a love of learning.

A native of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Sinclair earned a bachelor’s degree from Clarion University and a master’s degree from University of Pittsburgh - both in Physics.

He discovered a love of teaching while serving as an instructor at Naval Nuclear Power School while serving as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy.

That led him to St. Andrew’s and a lifetime of helping shape students’ minds.

On October 18, as part of Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, the school held a Celebration of Life for Kurt Sinclair, to honor and remember a St. Andrew’s legend.

“The St. Andrew’s mission is to know and inspire each child in an inclusive community dedicated to exceptional teaching, learning, and service. Kurt Sinclair was the literal embodiment of this mission,” Tom Taylor ’00 said in his remarks at the Celebration of Life. “He inspired each of his students. He knew us very well. He cared about who we were, coming to my lacrosse games and musicals. His teaching was exceptional and he served this school community with deep care and loyalty for years.”

Sinclair’s passing came less than two months after a retirement celebration was held with more than 100 alumni, students, parents, parents of alumni, and current and former faculty and staff in attendance. At that gathering, Sinclair shared this reflection: “To my students, and their parents who entrusted them to our care, my biggest thank you for allowing me to share my love of physics with each of you,” he said. “To my family, thank you for willingly sharing me with St. Andrew’s for 36 years. My time spent at St. Andrew’s is a gift that will live in my memory forever.”

Those who were in attendance at his retirement celebration witnessed an outpouring of gratitude and respect for Sinclair from decades of alumni. All who served with him, depended on him, and learned from him as colleagues witnessed an expert doing what he loved every day with quiet excellence, deep kindness, and exceptional dry humor. Sinclair loved St. Andrew’s deeply, and the school was so fortunate to have him for more than a generation.

In 2018, Sinclair earned the highest honor the school presents to a teacher, the Finneran Faculty Scholar Award. In presenting him with the award, Head of School Robert Kosasky said “As our seniors, alumni, and faculty can affirm, this year’s award recipient is one of the greatest teachers in St. Andrew’s history. No one has dug deeper into his discipline or worked harder to ensure that every class is an engaging, meaningful learning experience.

In the fall of 2024, the Kurt Sinclair Endowment was created in his honor to support faculty and staff compensation and growth.

“His dedication to his students and his colleagues was legendary and evident by his thoughtful interactions and willingness to take the time to support their growth and learning,” said Associate Head of School David Brown, himself a St. Andrew’s veteran of 36 years. “Each day in ‘Physics Land’ was structured, logical, methodically paced and sprinkled with a touch of dry humor — and — infused in each lesson, was Kurt’s unfailing awe at the organization of the cosmos. I will miss him frequently but particularly on clear nights with countless stars.”

Sinclair is survived by his wife, Penelope; daughters Aynesleah, Trevalyn, Ashlyn, and Halsey; grandchildren, Greyson and Caellum; mother, Gloria; and brothers Richard, Lance, Scott, Craig, and John.

WHAT THREE W ORDS WOULD YOU U SE TO DESCRIBE ST. ANDREW’S ?

hat three words would you use to describe St. Andrew’s?

This is the question that was posed to the community in January, when the school surveyed parents and caregivers, students in grades 5-12, and faculty and staff. The question was open-ended — no list of words to choose from, just any three words. And the responses were some of the most affirming words a school community could hope for.

For context, St. Andrew’s spent the 20242025 school year working on a self-study as part of its reaccreditation process for the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS). As part of the self-study, school climate surveys were conducted of the aforementioned groups — employees, parents and guardians, and fifth- through twelfth-grade students. To conduct the surveys, St. Andrew’s partnered with Challenge Success, an organization associated with Stanford University founded by legendary senior lecturer Denise Pope.

Challenge Success has been conducting surveys for hundreds of schools over the past two decades and have an enormous dataset for comparison.

So what words did the 223 parents and guardians who completed the survey, representing 50% of the parents in the community, use to describe St. Andrew’s?

Supportive. Welcoming. Inclusive. Community. Caring. Challenging, Nurturing, Engaging.

In total, 74% of St. Andrew’s parents and guardians used words that can be categorized as welcoming and caring.

Compare that with just 15% of the 22,000 parents and guardians who have taken the survey at other schools since 2019 and it becomes clear that St. Andrew’s is living its mission to know and inspire each student in an inclusive community dedicated to exceptional teaching, learning, and service.

The Challenge Success surveys did more than just provide St. Andrew’s with insight into the experiences of students, faculty and staff, and parents and guardians, but also a roadmap for how the school can continue to move forward and accomplish even more for its community.

Validation of Our Core Promise

One of the most distinguishing claims St. Andrew’s makes as a school is that students and families do not have to make a choice between joy and academic rigor.

That when a child comes here, they feel genuinely welcomed, cared for, and happy while also being academically challenged.

Because building a culture of well-being, happiness, and support helps students flourish and realize their potential.

Continued from page 11 aligns with the work of Stanford professors Carol Dweck, Greg Walton, and Geoffrey Cohen who end their highly influential, landmark report on “Academic Tenacity: Mindsets and Skills that Promote LongTerm Learning” by saying student outcomes are most improved when a caring and supportive environment is combined with “academic press,” or a focus on learning and high expectations for student achievement.1 In total, 50% of all respondents in the St. Andrew’s community, across constituencies, chose at least one word that aligned with caring and welcoming to describe the school. This compares with 23% in Challenge Success’ average data set of more than 34,000 individuals in similar schools in the 2024-2025 school year. This is all the more impressive when you realize that schools who choose to work with Challenge Success are not typical of all schools, but rather those who explicitly value this combination of academic challenge and supportive environment. Even among this subset of schools, St. Andrew’s stands out.

The robust environment for learning at St. Andrew’s reflects the schools belief that factors such as belonging, homework, stress, engagement, instruction, assessment, and student agency are vital in supporting student success.

engaged, 8% higher than peer schools, while 44% were “doing school,” 15% less than other schools in the data set. Results showed a slightly more engaged group of students in the Middle School with 50% fully or purposely engaged and 39% “doing school.”

These “doing school” students by and large are behaviorally engaged, but don’t regularly see the purpose in what they are doing or find it interesting or fun. So while St. Andrew’s is doing better than most other schools surveyed by Challenge Success, this is an area where growth can take place. And since factors like engagement, belonging, stress, and agency seem to track together, some pedagogical and curricular tweaks designed to boost engagement may also lead to improvements in a range of other areas such as increasing belonging, raising students’ level of agency, and lowering stress.

“I feel like an engaging class has a lot to do with your teacher and their teaching style,” said Student Government Association President Adam Grumet ’26. “I find

that classes that are entirely a lecture or without a varying teaching style can be boring and not engaging. Additionally, it really matters the attitude of your fellow classmates. In classes where people seem tired or uninterested, it takes away the energy and fun.”

Strisik echoed those points. “I don’t feel engaged when classes lack conversation or interaction, and it feels more like checking boxes to get information across before a test than actually learning the material,” she said. “When I feel engaged in a class, I have more choice in what I do. In humanities, this might mean tailoring a project to my interests, and in STEM, it could be as simple as choosing which problems to work on for homework out of a larger packet.”

The Challenge Success surveys showed that across constituencies, St. Andrew’s is at or above average in nearly every critical metric for a school’s long-term health and well-being. But it wouldn’t be St. Andrew’s without a growth mindset. The idea of what we can do to get better permeates the ethos and the surveys help provide a roadmap when it comes to teaching and learning.

preschool through twelfth grade curriculum to promote student engagement, learning, and leadership is one of five goals between now and the next reaccreditation in 2035-2036. The first step in achieving that is focusing on ways to elevate student engagement during professional development throughout this year and next year.

To test the efficacy of those efforts, the school expects to survey students again in the 2027-2028 school year.

In the here and now, the Challenge Success surveys were validation of the intentional work by St. Andrew’s teachers and administrators, from the school’s founding through today, to create a community of belonging where students can thrive academically in a joyful environment. It proves that when Head of School Robert Kosasky stands in front of prospective families at every open house and declares that you don’t have to choose between joy and rigor, that you can have both, he is indeed capturing the heart and soul of St. Andrew’s.

Parents and guardians were asked the three most important qualities when looking for a college or university for their child.

More than 55% indicated a specific academic program first followed by quality of professors, location, and cost/financial aid. College ranking (based on US News & World Report) came in at 28.7% and whether or not it is a member of the Ivy League was at 15.7%.

However, when asked the three most important qualities they thought mattered to other members of the school community, an overwhelming 71.2% said ranking in US News & World Report was mattered most and 53% said whether or not it was an Ivy League school.

Homecoming & Reunion This year’s Homecoming and Reunion gathered a record-number of St. Andrew’s families, alumni, teachers, and friends for a day filled with spirit, connection, and fun. It was wonderful to see our campus full of smiling faces enjoying the festivities.

Highlights from the day included the Celebration of Life for Kurt Sinclair, the Lion-Cub Breakfast, an unprecedented turnout for the annual Walkathon and alumni events, soccer games, fun on the softball field.

Alumni from classes ending in 0 and 5 held off-campus parties that night with the Class of 1985 celebrating its 40th Reunion.

Distinguished Alumni Award October 2025

TAYLOR ‘00

If you told Tom Taylor ’00 when he was a student at St. Andrew’s that he would some day receive St. Andrew’s Distinguished Alumni Award, he would have assumed he made it big as an actor. After starring on the stage in shows like “Once Upon a Mattress,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “Pippin,” Taylor went to Oberlin where he double majored in theater and, in no small part because of long-time St. Andrew’s Science Teacher Kurt Sinclair, physics.

Like many aspiring actors, Taylor headed to New York City after graduating from college. But he made the trip not for an acting role, but for a teaching job at Riverdale Country School.

“I decided to give teaching high school physics a try,” Taylor said. “I landed a great job at a school that was willing to invest in my growth, and about a week, maybe two, into classroom teaching, I realized this is where I want to be. The opportunity to create an environment that fosters the growth and development of young people is the greatest privilege in the world. As my career has developed, what I’ve discovered is that my classroom, so to speak, has gotten bigger, and my ability to influence dimensions of that has grown. At the end of the day, I’m helping to create an environment that fosters the 18

growth and development of young people.

And that is a privilege and the best job in the world.”

Taylor’s career has seen him go from classroom teacher to Director of Financial Aid and Outreach then Dean of Students at Riverdale before leaving for Breck School in Minneapolis suburbs where he became Upper School Division Director. After seven years there he returned to Riverdale as Head of Upper School.

Then, in the summer of 2023, he became just the second-ever Head of School at Paideia School in Atlanta, a school that

is very much like St. Andrew’s – it is preschool through twelfth grade and it is young, only having just celebrated its 50th anniversary.

For all of those accomplishments, for impacting the lives of countless students and fellow teachers, Taylor received the St. Andrew’s Distinguished Alumni Award on October 18 as part of this year’s Homecoming and Reunion.

“I am who I am because of St. Andrew’s and so it is incredibly humbling and enormously flattering to be recognized in this way,” Taylor said. “It really is a testament to St. Andrew’s, which invested in my growth while I was a student, of course, but through partnerships and engagement has continued to invest in my growth.”

Taylor attended St. Andrew’s from seventh grade through graduation and his experience bridged the Bradmoor and Postoak Campuses. And while that was 25-plus years ago, it is easy for him to step back in time and reflect on the teachers who were influential to him.

“I hated history in high school,” Taylor said. “I really didn’t like it. But when I became a teacher, it turned out that the person who I found myself emulating was Glenn Whitman. I didn’t even realize the impact he had on me until I became a teacher. Obviously Kurt Sinclair. I wouldn’t be anywhere without Kurt Sinclair.” Taylor also mentioned math teachers Dorothy Prats and David Brown, and theater teacher Karin Abromaitis as other influences on him during his high school years.

After more than 20 years in the classroom, having a direct impact on thousands of students, Taylor is mindful of his own impact on the next generation, much like those St. Andrew’s legends impacted him.

“It is important to me that when people think back on their time at Paideia or at Riverdale or at Breck, or whatever school I'm working at, that

they remember that time as feeling as though the adults knew about them, knew who they were, cared deeply about them as people more than just as students, were supportive of their growth, supportive through challenges, and that their growth and development was fostered in a loving way,” Taylor said. “Frankly, it’s less important that they attribute that to me specifically, because if I'm doing my job right, particularly now as Head of School, that's borne out through every person that I work with. So it’s less that I want to be the person who did that, and more that it is important that they felt seen and loved and cared for in that way. So in that regard, I do hope that I have had an influence.

“I also hope that in whatever profession they go on to do, that they recognize the importance of belonging, of compassion, of integrity, and intellect. I hope that they bring those values forward as well, whether it’s in medicine or in law or business. And then, of course, I always very explicitly put in a plug for teaching to the seniors as they’re graduating. I don't think there's a more noble profession than teaching, or than education, because I think anyone who works in a school is an educator, investing in children and in the growth of the society through young people, is vital.”

Thomas Shaw Award October 2025

O’BRIEN ‘05

When Madeline (Wallace) O’Brien ‘05 graduated from the College of Charleston in the spring of 2009, she never wanted to wear the color red ever again. She loved her seven years at St. Andrew’s and followed up her time on the Postoak Campus by heading to a college that shared the same colors. The cumulative effect of those 11 years led to her being done with the color.

Little did she know how much more red she had in her future.

O’Brien, who has spent much of her adult life working at and serving St. Andrew’s, was honored by the school on October 18 at Homecoming and Reunion when she was presented with the Thomas Shaw Award for Service to St. Andrew’s.

In 2011, two years after earning her bachelor’s degree from College of Charleston, O’Brien returned to St. Andrew’s as Director of Special Events. In 2015, in conjunction with her 10th-reunion, she moved into the role of Director of Alumni Affairs. In that role, she recruited and built the modern Alumni Council and worked tirelessly to build connections across the world with St. Andrew’s alumni.

In 2018, O’Brien and her husband moved across the country. Their family grew but her connection to St. Andrew’s never wavered, as she continued to serve 20

as a class agent and member of the alumni council - and always a superb ambassador for the school. In the summer of 2024, they returned to Maryland and O’Brien to a red-adorned environment, now in a parttime role as Events Coordinator.

“As both a professional and volunteer leader, Madeline has been a catalyst of the spirit, pride, and connection that our alumni have with their alma mater,” said Head of School Robert Kosasky at the Alumni Awards Brunch where she was honored.

“We have no better servant leader or cheerleader in our Lion Pride.”

just an “at school” thing. It was around every dinner table and family gathering from before she enrolled until after she had begun working at the school. Her older brother, Jake ’04, was already at St. Andrew’s when she began in sixth grade and her sister, Abbey ’08, joined a few years later. When she returned to work at St. Andrew’s, her brother Sam ’12 was a senior and her mother, Anne Wallace, was Chair of the Board of Trustees.

“Having my family at St. Andrew’s made it really feel like home,” O’Brien said. “And it gave us a bond that’s still strong today.”

O’Brien saw first hand the power of service in the work her mother did as both Board Chair, a force behind the partnership with Christ Roi, St. Andrew’s partner school in Haiti, and establishing the Anne Wallace Fund for Service Learning.

“What I’ve come to realize — and what I hope to encourage for everyone — is that giving back to this community isn’t just meaningful, it’s energizing,” O’Brien said. “Whether it’s through volunteering, donating, or mentoring — contributing to St. Andrew’s not only supports the next generation, but it feels really, really good. St. Andrew’s — and my parents — instilled in me a deep culture of service. My mothers’s example as Board Chair has always pushed me to lead with service first. That’s why I’m passionate about giving back to a place that has given all of us so much.”

In her time as a student, one teacher who left an impact on O’Brien was

Gregg Ponitch, who she had for math her junior year.

“Gregg Ponitch always emphasized effort,” O’Brien said. “I wasn’t a strong math student, but he encouraged me and made a class I never expected to enjoy genuinely fun. He also has a passion for service — I still have so many great memories from our service trip to Chicago.”

In her time as an alumna and employee, what O’Brien has found most rewarding has been the Alumni Council, which she was a catalyst in creating.

“The Alumni Council has really grown and evolved,” said O’Brien. “It’s exciting to see the impact it’s making and to imagine where we’re headed next.”

With O’Brien involved, it is sure to continue its impactful work in helping shape the alumni experience.

Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee October 2025

AZZARA ‘10

It would be fair to say that Nikki Azzara ’10 was a goal-oriented student-athlete.

Whether it was being named All-ISL, becoming the second player in girls basketball program history to score 1,000 points, or raising an ISL championship banner, Azzara was never one to shy away from a challenge or even consider coming up short.

“I think so much of my motivation and competitiveness, and being high-achieving - it was in my nature to want to accomplish goals that had been set forth for me,” Azzara said. And while the St. Andrew’s Athletics Hall of Fame did not exist when she was a student, it’s an unset goal she can check off her list as well.

On October 18, as part of Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, Azzara was inducted into the Hall of Fame during the Alumni Awards Brunch. She is the second member of her family to receive the honor. Her sister, Alex, was inducted in 2019.

“I feel like this award is recognition of that accomplishment that was so near and dear to me, scoring 1,000 points in my basketball career at St. Andrew’s. It’s such an honor,” Azzara said in late September, a few weeks before her induction. “I think what I am looking forward to the most about the actual ceremony and celebra-

tion is that so many of my teachers are still at St. Andrew’s, which I think speaks volumes, and that many of them are kind enough to come back for the ceremony, whether it’s coaches or former teachers.”

Reaching 1,000 points in her career was a goal Azzara set for herself early in her St. Andrew’s career, along with raising the first ISL banner in program history. The team had transitioned to the more competitive conference in 2000 and had yet to add a banner since leaving the P.V.A.C. She watched Alex reach that 1,000-point mark as a freshman and that set her on her own course for that milestone.

milestone for me,” Azzara said. “My sister, having just done it, showed me that it was possible. I thought ‘How cool would it be to accomplish that?’

It became a personal goal that I set for myself.”

After an impactful freshman year where she was one of the team’s leading scorers, Azzara continued to shine as a sophomore, earning the first of her three All-ISL honors. By junior year, she was commanding respect from opposing defenses.

“My bread and butter was the threepointer. That was my thing,” Azzara said. “I could make them from deep.

So if given space, I would take the shot and usually make it. I remember specifically, junior and senior year, there were games where the other team would run a box and one (defense) and cover me out at half court. So I would have to work harder to get open. There were some teams where I had personal ties, and they knew (to guard me close) off the bat. In retrospect it was flattering, but it didn’t make it fun.”

While Azzara’s Hall of Fame induction comes primarily because of her basketball accomplishments, she also played lacrosse and ran cross country while at St. Andrew’s. She continues to hold fond memories of those other teams, especially August preseason cross country trips to Deep Creek Lake.

“We had so much fun, such an amazing group of girls,” Azzara said. “It was almost like the highlight of the summer.

We all loved being together.”

“Nikki was one of those athletes that was always prepared, worked hard, had a positive attitude, and was a great teammate,” said legendary cross country coach Gary Wyatt, himself a member of the St. Andrew’s Hall of Fame.

“Even though cross country wasn’t her main sport, she competed hard every practice or race. What really made

Nikki special was her supporting and caring attitude towards her teammates.

Always encouraging them and trying to make it fun.”

Azzara recently moved back to the DMV and is in her first season as an assistant coach on the girls varsity basketball team. That has given her a chance to see some of her former

teachers on a more regular basis. That, along with her 15th reunion taking place in October, has given Azzara the chance to reflect on her St. Andrew’s experience.

“I always talk about how St. Andrew’s really was a place that allowed me to thrive, both academically and athletically,” Azzara said. “It was so special to be in a place where every day you feel safe and challenged and celebrated. My favorite memories of St. Andrew’s are of this amazing community of people around you at all times - teachers, coaches, teammates, classmates, friends.”

Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee October 2025

HARMON ‘15

When Jarena Harmon ‘15 stepped on the pitch she answered the prayers of varsity girls soccer head coach Glenn Whitman. It was the summer of 2012 and Whitman felt like the one thing the team was missing was a goal scorer. That’s when Harmon showed up, a sophomore excited to join a close friend on the team and have some fun.

At that first practice two weeks before school began “she burned a hole in the ground,” Whitman said. It was just a glimpse at the talent and skills possessed by one of the most dynamic athletes in St. Andrew’s history.

On October 18, 2025, Harmon was inducted into the St. Andrew’s Athletics Hall of Fame. And it all started because Harmon wanted to join her good friend Memuna McShane ‘15 on the soccer field and have some fun.

“I was on the soccer field because I love to play,” Harmon said. “I honestly didn’t consider any impact I might have on the team. But the coaches were like ‘Let’s make your ability work for everyone.’ I cared about winning, but also, I was having the time of my life just playing.”

In her three years of playing soccer at St. Andrew’s, Harmon scored 98 goals with 11 assists and was named Washington Post All-Met and All-ISL three times.

During her sophomore and junior years 24

she played basketball, also being named All-ISL both of those seasons. As a junior and senior, she competed in track and field, mostly to “stay in shape during the spring.”

She ended up setting school records in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump.

“I heard that they were looking for someone to try the long jump and I thought ‘This actually seems fun,’” Harmon said “I enjoy jumping. It can’t hurt to advance your jumping abilities. If you can jump high, jump far and can spring - I feel like that’s a good athletic balance.”

While Harmon was clearly a balanced athlete, it was in soccer where she proved to be elite. As her career progressed at

St. Andrew’s, it became obvious that Harmon would be able to play beyond high school.

“I always wanted to play at a high level and when I learned you could play in college, that really became my driving force,” Harmon said. “All my memories of having success on the field, court, and track came with the knowledge that all my hard work mattered.”

Harmon mentioned that Whitman played a role in pushing her as an athlete. And those lessons help her now as she takes a break before starting her medical school clinical fellowship to work as an assistant girls soccer coach at Brearley School in New York and an assistant teacher at Nightingale-Bamford School.

“Coach Whitman played this role of trying to see how far I was willing to take myself,” Harmon said. “I feel like that’s something that now, as a coach, I challenge my kids to bring their own flair or personality to the game. The team obviously comes first, but are you having fun? Are you challenging yourself ? He taught me that every time you come to practice, you’re not just doing things to do them, you’re doing them with perfection, with your absolute best in mind. I feel like he really helped shape my mind in that way.”

For his part, Whitman holds Harmon up as one of several special players he had the privilege of coaching.

“Jarena transformed the style of play for the girls’ varsity soccer team and set new standards for goal scoring in the program,” Whitman said. “She was the fastest player on the ball that I have ever coached and played with amazing intensity and joy. ‘J’ hated to lose, which is something any coach would appreciate. As Jarena pursued her ambition to play Division I soccer she maintained an equal commitment to her club and school soccer teams, which endeared Jarena to her teammates.”

Harmon eventually achieved her dream of playing Division I soccer, first at the University of Pittsburgh where she scored a hat trick in her first collegiate game - the ninth in program history - then at the University of Maryland for her final three seasons of eligibility, where she played in 54 matches with 15 goals and three assists.

The Intersection of Reading and Writing

At St. Andrew’s, every student, from preschool through 12th grade, is on a journey of reading to learn and learning to read, in every subject and at every grade level — even preschool where we are building phonological awareness.

The relationship between reading, writing, listening, and speaking is reciprocal: improving one strengthens the others.

Strong readers become strong writers and oral communicators of ideas.

In the rapidly developing world of AI, strong readers will be the ones writing more nuanced, complex prompts that unlock stronger responses — and will show greater discernment when evaluating these responses and choosing what to do next. Reading is the gateway to knowledge and vocabulary acquisition, exposure to sentence structure, grammar, and deep learning in all of St. Andrew’s

subjects: Arts, English, Health & Well-being, History, Language, Math, Philosophy & Religion, and Science.

Both oral language and knowledge are essential for reading. Research shows

that oral language provides the foundation, especially in elementary school, but students also need knowledge building, self-regulation, motivation, and reading strategies to succeed — especially knowledge building. A comprehensive approach that includes all these components works best. This is our model at St. Andrew’s.

Books like “The Knowledge Gap” by Natalie Wexler, “The Reading Mind” by Dan Willingham, and “The Vocabulary Gap” by Alex Quigley have informed the CTTL’s work.

In the Lower School, all St. Andrew’s teachers are trained in the science of reading, which is applied through explicit instruction, structured practice, and a knowledge-rich curriculum that includes an emphasis on vocabulary building. Systematic instruction in phonics, vocabulary, reading, and writing — instruction that honors personal choice — builds a strong literacy foundation which fosters engaged readers and joyful, authentic writers. It is in Middle School and Upper School, “when students learn to really dig into the language they are reading,” said English Teacher Liz Regan Kiingi ’87.

At the same time, students are taught how to read more complex texts and subject-specific literacy tasks. Reading a Math word problem or a Biology textbook is a skill that St. Andrew’s teachers intentionally teach.

Strategies to encourage reading are easy to implement at home. From conversation cards that build vocabulary to modeling reading by setting time to read out loud, there are many creative ways to get started. In this edition of “MBE You Can Use,” we’re showcasing practical ideas to help you foster a love of reading at home.

1. Read aloud to your children Don't think this stops after elementary school — older kids benefit just as much from hearing complex texts read aloud. For Lower School students, choose picture books and chapter books slightly above their reading level to build vocabulary and background knowledge. For Middle and Upper Schoolers, try audiobooks during car rides or read compelling articles, poems, or even interesting passages from books they're studying for school.

2. Incentivize your kids to read independently at home Create simple systems that work for your family: reading time before screen time, a family reading hour after dinner, or letting kids stay up 30 minutes later if they're reading in bed. For younger children, try sticker charts or small rewards for books completed. For older students, consider book-buying budgets, special outings to bookstores, or letting them choose a family movie based on a book they've read.

3. Use conversation cards during daily routines Turn car rides and dinner time into vocabulary-building opportunities with simple conversation starters.

For elementary ages, try "Would you rather" questions or "What if"

scenarios that build reasoning skills.

Middle and Upper Schoolers can handle deeper discussions about current events, ethical dilemmas, or hypothetical situations that require them to explain their thinking and use sophisticated language.

4. Build knowledge through experiences Take advantage of free resources in our community — museums, library programs, nature walks, and cultural events all build the knowledge foundation that makes reading comprehension easier. For younger students, even grocery store trips can become learning experiences when you discuss where foods come from. Older students benefit from documentaries, podcasts, and conversations about current events that connect to what they're learning in school.

5. Choose printed books over screens This one's easier than you think — simply prioritize physical books for recreational reading while reserving screens for research and school assignments.

Keep books visible throughout your house and model reading print materials yourself. For teenagers especially, having physical books removes the temptation to switch to social media mid-chapter, and research shows they'll actually comprehend and remember more of what they read.

2024-2025 annual report St. Andrew’s Episcopal School concluded fiscal year 2025 (FY25) with a strong financial performance, achieving both an operating surplus and a healthy positive cash flow. The Board of Trustees is highly gratified by these results, particularly considering the broader economic environment that continues to place pressure on the school’s expenses.

Our financial strength is built upon a foundation of strong enrollment and the extraordinary generosity of the St. Andrew’s community. Beyond tuition revenue, essential support came through philanthropy, including gifts to Capital Giving, the Lions Fund, and the annual Gala. This robust community backing allowed us to successfully invest in our faculty and staff by addressing employee compensation and developing our professional growth pathways while supporting the school’s future as it approaches its 50th Anniversary. We are proud to report that all financial obligations, including our debt covenants, were met during this period.

The 2025-2026 school year is off to a strong start, with a record enrollment of 734 students. We continue to invest in our campus with the renovation of the Kiplinger House expected to be complete before the end of the calendar year.

To further boost our financial position and support our long-term vision, the School recently closed a $16 million financing. This important move allows us to focus on the priorities outlined in our recently approved campus master plan and ongoing strategic planning work.

With your continued support, St. Andrew’s is well-positioned to maintain an extraordinary teaching and learning environment and fulfill our mission to know and inspire each child.

FUND-A-SCHOLAR GALA

The annual giving program supports faculty salaries, professional development, financial aid, technology, the arts, and athletic programs.

A gift to the Lions Fund is the first and most important gift we ask of every member of our community. Participation in this school tradition matters.

The annual Fund-a-Scholar Gala helps support our financial aid program.

In 2024-2025, approximately 36% of students received tuition support totaling more than $7.3 million.

named honorary awards THE WARREN BORG ATHLETES OF THE YEAR AWARDS Recipients: Kata Buttrey and Andrew Orsi

The Rev. Dr. Warren “Jess” Borg was the founding headmaster of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. Under his strong guidance, the School grew rapidly while staying focused on the development of each student. Dr. Borg helped begin interscholastic sports at St. Andrew’s, and he had a deep commitment to sportsmanship.

RICHARD KLEMM BOYD, JR. ART AWARD

Recipient: Safa Al-Uqdah Robinson This award is named in memory of Richard Klemm Boyd, Jr. who was the brother of Barbara Beatty, the School’s first art history teacher. Ms. Beatty created the award in her brother’s memory after he died serving as company commander in the Vietnam War.

SGA/FRANCISCO HOPE AWARD Recipient: Daniel Lobsenz

This award is presented to a senior whose leadership and organizational skills are reminiscent of Francisco Hope Garces, Class of 1994. This award was created by Francisco’s mother to honor his memory following his death.

SHEILA MAITH AWARD

ALEXANDRA RYAN AWARD

This award is named for Sheila Maith, who served as a St. Andrew’s trustee from 2013 to 2023, and as Board Chair from 2020 to 2023. Ms. Maith guided St. Andrew’s through a time of enormous societal change with deep wisdom and foresight, grounded in the belief that belonging and growth are essential to educational excellence and the spirit of St. Andrew’s. The Sheila Maith Award recognizes a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in supporting diversity, equity, and belonging in the spirit of St. Andrew’s.

This award is named in honor of Alexandra Ryan ‘84. The Ryans named this award in honor of their daughter’s achievements at St. Andrew’s. The Alexandra Ryan Award was established in 1985 and is presented to that junior whose personal contribution and service to the school and community merits special recognition.

DAVID MAYHOOD AWARD

Recipient: Kosette Koons-Perdikis David Mayhood served as Board Chair from 1993 until 1999, leading the effort to plan, fund, and build the Postoak Campus.

Mr. Mayhood’s strength, humor and inspiration created a permanent home for St. Andrew’s and strengthened the school in multiple ways. This award is presented to the senior who, in the judgment of the faculty, demonstrates strong character and resolve while instituting positive change and successfully meeting the challenges of this school year.

WILLIAM WAY AWARD Recipient: Samina Bhatia

William Way was the Chairman of the founding Board of Trustees who is credited with beginning the tradition of deep and personal commitment by Board leaders to the School. Mr. Way cared deeply that St. Andrew’s combined excellent academic preparation with strong character education, all grounded in an inclusive Episcopal environment. This award is presented to the senior who, in the judgment of the faculty, exemplifies the highest ideals of the school.

STONE TAYLOR WEEKS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE STUDY OF HISTORY Recipient: Alan Mehmetoglu

Stone ’03 and his younger brother, Holt, were killed in 2009 by a highway trucking crash. Their parents, Jan and Linton, established this award as a way to recognize Stone’s enduring contributions to the life of our school and to encourage excellence in a discipline that was a lifelong passion of Stone: the study of history.

FINN STUDENT FELLOWS PROGRAM

This program was established by Kevin Finn ’93 and Tim Finn ’96 in honor of their father, Dr. Terry Finn, a former trustee. The Student Fellows are selected annually to work with the CTTL on teaching and learning research.

Honoring 25 Years at St. Andrew’s Quarter Cen

tury Club

This past spring, four St. Andrew’s legends were added into the “Quarter-Century Club” for 25 years of service to the school. David Brandt, Chantal Cassan, Gregg Ponitch, and Ritchie Porter began

their journey at St. Andrew’s in the fall of 2000, not long after the school moved to Potomac. While they teach different subjects, they each have left a unique mark on the school, and their collective impact on students, colleagues, and the broader community is equally significant. The quartet brings the total number of faculty and staff in the Quarter-Century Club to 26, with 11 currently at the school. This year, Tracey Goodrich sets a new school record as she is in her 40th year of service to the school. With a strong commitment to the long-term growth of its faculty and staff, and a culture of exceptional teaching, learning and leadership, St. Andrew’s is a school where great educators thrive and put down deep roots.
