A LETTER FROM OUR HEAD

dear friends, As a parent and Head of School, I think about risks frequently, and not always happily. “Risk” is a hard word to hear when thinking about the people and the community I love. And yet on the coming pages, you will read about some alumni and the ways taking risks have helped them in their life after St. Andrew’s.

These stories shine a light on confident young adults who understand what motivates them, who have discovered and practiced their passions, and who grew up in families and a school that believed in them. In an age of rising anxiety, the security bestowed by supportive schools and families protects students’ well-being and motivates them to become independent thinkers and take healthy risks.

These Lion risk-takers reflect the DNA and culture of their alma mater. St. Andrew’s was founded to be visionary – to see and realize the potential of each student and of the institution itself. The same confidence and commitment that imbues our graduates inspired St. Andrew’s to acquire the Postoak Campus in 1998, to add the Lower School in 2008, and to found the Center for Transformative Teaching & Learning in 2011. In opening the Student Center in 2016 and the new Lower School this fall, St. Andrew’s took thoughtful risks, rightly believing that expanding our campus for our students and faculty would inspire our community.

My 18 years (and counting) as head of St. Andrew’s have been the most rewarding and challenging of my career. This is a visionary school with a joyful soul. As I shake their hands on the first day of school, hand them their diplomas when they graduate, and reconnect with them when they return as proud alumni, I see that vision and joy – and a whole lot of potential – in the eyes of our Lions.

ALUMNI PROFILE: TAKING RISKS

Revving Up a Start-Up At Argo AI, Griffen ’10 builds the team that will drive the future.

Charles Griffen ’10 entered the self-driving technology industry by happenstance. While at a happy hour in 2017, he ran into his old boss who had joined a start-up, Pittsburgh-based Argo AI, and proceeded to recruit Griffen for a job.

Griffen, who has made a career out of recruiting engineers. was not a hard sell.

“It’s not every day where you get to join a company at such an early stage and see it being built,” Griffen said. “Being able to go from 100 or so employees when I started to around 500 employees – it’s been cool to see that growth.”

At Argo AI, Griffen, who was known to classmates and teachers as Chas during his time at St. Andrew’s, is a technical recruiter.

He is responsible for scaling the company by finding the best engineers in machine learning and deep learning infrastructure and motivating them to bring their talent to Argo.

“That’s the biggest challenge – the people we go after are in the self-driving space already or at large tech companies like Google,” Griffen said. “If you’re in a research division at a large company and most of your research doesn’t get used, you can come to Argo, you can put your research into production-level code on a vehicle, and see what you’re researching really come to life, which I think is a big draw.”

While he does not have a background in robotics, Griffen said the possibilities of selfdriving technology motivate his work.

“Can self-driving cars help families transport themselves around, and do things that public transportation systems wouldn’t

be able to do?” he said. “These are things self-driving cars can impact, and why I think the space is super interesting.”

When Griffen joined Argo, the selfdriving technology industry was a crowded field, which included some start-ups that are no longer around, he said. While transitioning into this space from his job as a technical sourcer at HBO was “nervewracking,” he didn’t see it as a risk at the time.

“When I first joined we had zero cars on the road, [but] the excitement blinded me to the risk,” Griffen said. “The riskiest thing joining any kind of start-up is not necessarily on the work side, but it’s all the little things: how do you build culture? Are we using the right payroll company? Are we doing these things and hiring smart people who are able to put these processes into place?

“I would say those are the biggest risks, and seeing those risks overcome is one of

the biggest rewards.”

Two events reinforced his decision to join this start-up: Argo’s vehicle debut in Miami last year, and Volkswagen’s recent investment in Argo’s self-driving technology.

“It’s one of those things where you wake up one day and realize you’re at a company that is considered a successful start-up,” Griffen said. “Those are the moments where I feel vindicated in what I’m doing here.”

Argo is currently developing its thirdgeneration vehicle, which Griffen has had a chance to experience during test drives.

It’s these moments when he witnesses his impact as a recruiter.

“It’s definitely exciting to see the people you hire end up making the impact that makes the rides even better than they were three months ago, six months ago, two years ago.”

ALUMNI PROFILE: TAKING RISKS

Vidyasagar ’01 shines on the screen thanks to ‘sunny days’ Actress builds on career after spending six seasons on “Sesame Street.”

For many St. Andrew’s alumni, hearing that “Sesame Street” is celebrating its 50th anniversary this fall brings back memories of watching muppets who became old friends through years of watching. For one St. Andrew’s alumna, Nitya Vidyasagar ’01, the reunion meant a chance to see some real friends in person.

Vidyagasar spent six years as a regular on “Sesame Street,” playing the human character Leela, the show’s first character of Indian descent. It was her first major acting role which eventually led to roles in the Netflix movie “Velvet Buzzsaw” CBS’s “The Good Wife” and “Blue Bloods,” and a recurring arc on USA’s “Suits.”

For Vidyagasar, acting was a passion she first discovered as a middle school student. She began as a seventh grader at St. Andrew’s in 1995 having just moved to America from India. She found a sense of community in the arts program.

“The theater and arts community at St. Andrew’s made a huge difference to my experience,” Vidyasagar said. “I found a space and a feeling of belonging while also discovering this thing that I wanted to spend my life doing. I credit that to all the amazing young people that participated in those programs, and to my teachers, Mr. Duncan and Mr. Barber.”

Vidyasagar was fortunate enough to get into the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where she studied in

the Stella Adler Studio. Despite seeking a life in a challenging profession, she never viewed it as a gamble.

“It didn’t even occur to me that it was a risk,” Vidyasagar said. “I don’t think I considered it a risk for many years. My folks, I imagine did perceive it as a risk, but their trust in me to do the right thing and their belief in me both fundamentally to make the right choices but also their belief in my potential as an artist – their trust in that surpassed the weight of the risk.

I can’t imagine what it would have been like without their support. I feel incredibly privileged to come from a family and a context where a career in the arts was feasible and acceptable. I feel extremely lucky about that.”

It was a few years after she graduated from NYU before she began booking roles, but her life changed forever in 2008 when she was cast on “Sesame Street.”

After a first audition that included a word of the day monologue and a little singing, she was called back into a packed room where she had to prepare material, including a full song, a 10-minute improv with a muppet, and a prepared scene with Elmo. The end result was her joining the cast of an iconic American show that she had never really seen herself growing up, although she was obviously familiar with the muppets.

“I think the values of ‘Sesame Street’ are so intrinsically linked to the characters, so if you know anything about them, you know about the (Sesame Street) world,” Vidyasagar said. “You know that it’s inclusive and focused on kindness and generosity and love and growth.”

will air celebrating “Sesame Street,” its history and its contributions. Vidyasagar, who spent six years as a regular on the show and took part in the filming of the special, looks forward to seeing it air.

No Obstacle Too Great For Magida ’04 Publicist turned entrepreneur shines a spotlight on the sport that changed his life.

David Magida ’04 wrestled and ran track at St. Andrew’s, but his favorite sport – and the one he most excelled at – was cross country.

“I loved the varied terrain, [hurdling] downed trees, jumping through creeks, the challenge of hills, the beauty of nature,” Magida said.

So it’s no surprise that when it came to pursuing a career in the world of fitness, he’s enjoyed the twists and turns just as much, both as a business owner and as an obstacle course competitor.

“Those who know me from St. Andrew’s would say I was always destined to work in fitness,” Magida said, although that didn’t happen right away.

After earning his Master’s degree in public relations from Miami University in 2012, Magida worked as a publicist and management consultant.

“I never saw [fitness] as a career until I heard my dad talking about his trainer and referred to them as having a career,” Magida said. “I never thought, in my parents’ eyes, I would be able to work in this industry and get the recognition from them that I was doing something they could be proud of. It clicked for me that I could.”

Magida began to survey the boutique fitness industry in Washington, D.C. and discovered there was not an offering that matched his vision – a studio that could get people “running and rowing and

strength training, all combined in a multimodality studio.”

He was also motivated to enter the fitness industry as his reputation as an obstacle course competitor grew. He was a top finisher in races across the country and became a member of the Spartan Pro Team.

“I was having so much success racing and competing that people wanted me to coach them,” Magida said. “I was just happy in my element in fitness. I always identified as an athlete. It’s who I was.”

So he went all in, opening his studio, Elevate Interval Fitness, in 2014. In the early days, Magida committed nearly all of his waking hours to the studio, working from the 5 a.m. opening shift to the 9 p.m. closing. Whether he was training coaches and ensuring they shared the “personal touches” that make Elevate special, or running the day-to-day operations of a new studio, Magida knew how to stay motivated.

“When I’m coaching people, I always tell them to focus on why they’re here.

Why they came to train. The same can be said for working through your challenges,” Magida said. “Focus on your goals and objectives, and what you love about what you’re doing. The mission, for me, is to impact as many people’s lives in a positive way as possible. When you have a real purpose, challenging things don’t feel as daunting.”

He has also taken on a bigger role in the obstacle course racing community as a personality and as an advocate for the sport. He is a host of “Spartan Race” on Facebook Watch and ESPN, the author of “The Essentials of Obstacle Race Training,” and is collaborating

with USA Obstacle Course Racing and the International Olympic Committee to develop obstacle course racing as an Olympic sport.

While the sport is still growing in its visibility, Magida chooses to be an advocate because obstacle racing changed his life.

“From the minute I ran my first race, I knew I had found my sport. It was an exhilarating experience, combining every element of fitness into one, single event,” he said. “I want this sport to become mainstream because I’ve seen, firsthand, the impact it’s had not just on my life, but on thousands of people, and I believe that impact will continue.”

How Saying Yes Can Be the Biggest Risk of All Reflections on my year of well-intentioned impulsivity.

I just finished my first year at Duke University. Looking back on my time at St. Andrew’s, I realize that spontaneously saying YES to exciting intellectual opportunities without overthinking them– the true essence of risk-taking – was one of my greatest tools for success. And I owe it all to my time as an “impulsive teenager.”

When I was a rising ninth grader, I remember receiving cautionary reminders from my parents, my middle school health classes, and my favorite coming-of-age movies that my underdeveloped brain and I would soon embark on the grand adventure of adolescence… and probably make some unwise choices along the way.

New environment…new friends…new freedoms. A path of growth, laden with obstacles like peer pressure and rebellious cynicism. As it became ingrained in my mind – and most teenage minds – that rash decision-making and mistake-making would be inevitable in our futures, the words “impulsivity” and “risk” quickly took on negative connotations. I always associated them with consequences, like overspending money or winding up in detention.

What society didn’t tell me was that my impulsive teenage mind would actually help me become a better person.

I started off my freshman year at Duke nervously clutching a handful of brochures at the Campus Activities Fair and ended 16

it happily immersed in organizations that embodied my passions, including Duke Environmental Alliance, Duke Wesley Methodist fellowship, a delightfully geeky social group called Round Table, a community service fraternity, and the Huang Fellows program for scientific research.

I asked myself the same question I asked a few months earlier when I graduated from St. Andrew’s: How did I get here?

I tried boiling down the risk-taking strategies I’ve carried beyond St. Andrew’s into three points.

1. Adopt the “Insta-Yes” 2. Reach out 3. Make challenge pacts with friends The first one, the “Insta-Yes,” is simple: if something sounds cool, say yes to it. (I like to do so almost instantly, before my fearful brain talks me out of it.) Take charge of a committee for the Environmental Alliance?

Insta-Yes. Boldly turn in a comic memoir instead of an essay for my final Writing paper? Yes. No regrets. Sign up for an experimental Chemistry 101 peer-study group? Sure. (I sprinted across the quad to turn in my application right at 10 a.m. and grabbed one of the last remaining spots.

The study group later saved my grade.)

I took these chances because abundant opportunities and risk-tasking was ingrained in me during my time at St. Andrew’s…like trying out (and butchering) a solo in A Cappella Club, or choosing a challenging topic for my research paper. I’ve learned that sometimes it’s best to just be a Yes-Person – even at the risk of spreading myself too thin – because I’m more scared of the alternative: succumbing to the “I’ll Pass,” a false sense of rationality that actually stems from selfdoubt and a fear of failure. Say yes, and the rest will follow. Well-intentioned impulsivity drives courage.

The second strategy is one that I learned from my St. Andrew’s Oral History Project.

Reach out! I’ll never forget what it first felt like to contact my OHP interviewee (a respected female astrobiologist at NASA) out of the blue, squirming as I sent an email that felt intrusive and unworthy of her time. I quickly learned that it wasn’t.

but she sent me a box of artifacts from her trip to Antarctica and invited me over to her house for lunch. As a college student, I cannot emphasize enough the power of a carefully crafted email. I’m not sure why we students are afraid of Reaching Out (or “networking” with professionals, or whatever you want to call it). The possibility of awkwardness?

Creepiness? Taking initiative? Duke is pretty big on community involvement, and I found myself conducting countless rewarding interviews with everyone from environmental journalists to functional medicine practitioners for my school projects. The bottom line: reaching out works, and it doesn’t have to be creepy or awkward!

My final strategy has been to make challenge pacts with friends. I like surrounding myself with people who aren’t afraid to try new things (and possibly fail at them) alongside me. Army crawling my way through the trenches of college calculus was easier –at times, even joyous – when several of my friends pledged to do the same. It reminded me a lot of a risky

class my friends and I took at St. Andrew’s, AP Physics, which inspired me to seek out new challenges. Whenever a test was hard, I leaned on the solidarity of my friends and our joint promise to accept the loss, becoming comfortable “taking the L” together. When things went well, our group celebrations were infinitely more rewarding!

From St. Andrew’s to Duke and beyond, I hope to continue taking risks (some more calculated than others) by saying yes, reaching out, and making challenge pacts, all while embracing the reality that growing up entails making mistakes. Surrounded by the societal message that impulsivity is bad, it has taken years of branching out and taking risks in school for me to realize that some forms of impulsivity – such as following intellectual whims – actually have priceless rewards. What have mine been?

Lifelong high school memories, building academic grit, ending up at my dream school, finding new friends and experiences…just to name a few.

Thanks to Duke, and St. Andrew’s, I’ve never been prouder to be an impulsive teenager.

Two Alumni Navigate the Music Industry Together Brenton Duvall ’09 and Britta Loftus ’13 chase their “Daydreams.”

Developing an infatuation for the songs of a particular musician or artist remains a hallmark high school experience. Not only do St. Andrew’s alumni Brenton Duvall ’09 and Britta Loftus ’13 continue to have fond memories of the artists that they connected with during their high school years, but they work today to create similar experiences for fans of their own music.

Loftus recently self-released a single entitled “Daydreams” on Aug. 2, which Duvall produced. As artists, both Duvall and Loftus work toward creating songs that hold meaning to their listeners.

“The most fun thing about music, in my mind, is not even necessarily that I am expressing myself, but that I am getting to connect with other people, because I want to get other people excited about it,” Loftus said. “It’s not about whether the song expresses who I am, it is about whether it connects with people.”

Duvall echoes this when he thinks about the songs he has helped produce for acts such as The Chainsmokers, Fall Out Boy, Kiiara, and iLoveMakonnen. Two of the songs he produced this year have gone gold – “Feels” by Kiiara and “I’ve Been Waiting” by Lil Peep & iLoveMakonnen.

when an artist gets a bunch of love on a song, I am able to see the love that they are getting and apply [it] to myself, and that’s enough for me.”

Duvall moved to Los Angeles in 2015. After having made a name for himself during ten years of work in music production, he became interested in working with someone not yet established within the industry. His younger brother, Will ’14, showed Duvall a Snapchat video of Loftus performing with her college band at the University of Richmond and suggested that Duvall should reach out to her.

Loftus moved to Los Angeles soon after graduating from Richmond in 2017, and together the former St. Andrew’s students began an intensive year-long process of working and creating “Daydreams.”

Duvall saw the experience as something he learned from. “We obviously had learned a lot from each other, because I am in the thick of this and it is easy to forget how things really are,” he said. “Even though Britta was completely new to things, there are still things you can learn from someone like that who is so passionate about music.”

“We also definitely took our time with the lyrics,” Loftus recalled. “We went back and we redid some verses and we took on the second perspective of, what does this mean to other people?, and thought about the sound and flow of the song.”

Despite their successes in the music industry, Duvall and Loftus continue to learn from rejection and the daily challenges of working to create music in a rapidly changing business.

“Everyone has an opinion on music, and more than half the people in this industry don’t even play an instrument or anything,” Duvall explained. “You just have to accept that people don’t always know what they are talking about. People are not right or wrong. No one is smarter than you for telling you that you are bad, they are just saying this was not their thing.”

Loftus also experienced some challenges when promoting “Daydreams” to music blogs and other playlists.

“I’ll get people who will write back and

tell me what they liked, but then say that they did not identify with [the song] or say it was too commercial. It always sucks. But I think the few yeses that happen make it all worth it.”

Along with those obstacles, Duvall and Loftus offer advice for people willing to take the risk and pursue a career in the music industry.

“You just have to make it a part of your routine and just keep doing it,” Duvall said.

“I always tell people who are looking for advice in the music industry, ‘if you don’t quit, you are going to be fine.’”

Loftus emphasizes the importance of social media and developing connections with other artists and producers.

“You can use social media to your advantage to seek out people similar to you and research what they are doing,” Loftus said. “You have the world at your fingertips; do not be afraid to reach out to people and always try to offer what you can do for them.”

As Duvall looked back on the influence St. Andrew’s had on his passion for music, he credits the school with teaching him how to learn.

“I feel like I figured out how to learn for myself when I was at St. Andrew’s, and once I developed my passion for music, I could not stop. I just wanted to know everything, do everything, and meet all these people. I feel like St. Andrew’s really helped with that.”

Although Loftus is still finding a place within the music industry, she receives a lot of support from her St. Andrew’s community.

“It helped to have people to back you up and feel like you have people in your corner,” she said. “I released my song and people from St. Andrew’s were excited about it and sharing it. I don’t even know if they know how much that means to me, You are just learning to have courage and believe in yourself, because other people believe in you and want you to succeed. It means the most when people do support you in that way.”

Joshua Joseph ’19 grew up in the bend of the Potomac River and next door to Olympic kayakers from around the world – a confluence that set him on the path to his own goal of representing the United States in slalom kayaking at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

To do this, he’s taking a gap year from college, training at home and abroad for what may be the ultimate competition of his kayaking career.

“I know I have the ability; it’s just about training hard enough this year and putting down a good race on that day, and that will make all the difference,” Joseph said.

Joseph is ranked no. 1 in the United States and no. 3 in the world among junior K1 mens kayakers. Among kayakers of all ages, he is ranked no. 2 in the country.

Joseph got his start paddling with his father. When he was six or seven, a club kayaking coach invited him to try paddling with a team – “I’ve been hooked since,” he said.

When he was 13, Joseph traveled abroad for his first international competitions, European Cup races in Slovenia and Germany. He medaled the following year in a U14 European Cup race, a moment that inspired him to compete for a place on podiums around the world.

“I had that feeling of winning, that feeling that drives you to want it more,” Joseph said. “I think [competing] is more 20

in my nature – if I want to do something, I want to do the best.”

He made the junior national team for the first time when he was 15, which exposed him to expert coaching and training at an early age. Only the top three junior K1 mens kayakers in the country are selected for the team, and Joseph has made the cut every year since.

He qualified for the senior national team in the spring, opening up more racing opportunities. This past summer, Joseph competed in the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Slalom World Cup at Tacen, Slovenia, the ICF Junior Canoe

Slalom World Championships in Kraków, Poland, and the Pan American Games in Lima Peru, where he earned a silver medal in the men’s extreme slalom (K1) race.

All these achievements bring him closer toward his lifelong goal of going to the Olympics, he said. Over the next seven months, Joseph will focus on his technique so he can be smoother on the white water while also emphasizing cardio and strength training. His training regime includes sprint intervals and loops up and down the river “at 95 %” to prepare for the 90-second Olympic trials in April and May. Joseph is aware of how this high level of

“I had that feeling of winning, that feeling that drives you to want it more.

I think [competing] is more in my nature – if I want to do something, I want to do the best.” training can exhaust him physically and mentally, so he is taking steps to stay motivated, such as traveling to Australia and New Zealand for his winter training.

“There are times when I’m really driven to be as good as I can be, and there are some times when I feel a little burnt out,” Joseph said. “I think it comes and goes with the time and the season. In the summer when you’re racing and competing, it’s really easy to enjoy it and really push as well as you can. But when it’s the middle of the

winter and you don’t have a competition for another three or four months and it’s cold and you’re in the water, you start doubting if you really want to do this.

“I try to think to the summer – I won’t have as good of a time in the summer if I don’t do the hard work now in the winter.”

Unlike other international competitions where three boats are selected to represent a nation, only the top boat in the country will go to the Olympics. He’s already imagined what it would be like to paddle in Tokyo and be like one of the people he knows, including his neighbors and fellow kayakers, who’ve done it.

“Always in my head it’s been my main goal to go to the Olympics,” Joseph said.

“I’ve known so many people who have reached that goal, and it’s not changed their lives, but it’s impacted their lives really beneficially.”

As he reaches for his goal, he doesn’t see his gap year as a risk.

“I think that if I had just gone straight to college, I would have risked having to live with the regret of not giving it a shot,” he said.

2018 Joseph comes in third place in the U18 category of the Australia Open after a month training with the U.S. Senior National Team in Penrith, Australia, and again earns a spot on the junior national team.

letter from the treasurer The St. Andrew’s family has much to celebrate this fall as we come together on one campus with record enrollment and the imminent opening of the new Lower School building. These achievements are possible because of the School’s continued strong financial position made possible because of the generosity of our community.

Looking back on the 2018-2019 school year, St. Andrew’s saw increased enrollment levels over the prior year, a strong operating surplus, and a positive cash flow, thus meeting our financial obligations and debt covenants comfortably. In addition to growth in tuition revenue and careful expense management, the School’s financial health was further strengthened by the generous philanthropy of the St. Andrew’s community through gifts to Capital Giving, the Lions Fund, the 40th Anniversary Gala, and the investments in the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning.

Based on the strong financial stewardship of the Board and administration, coupled with the success of fundraising efforts, the School was able to fund construction of the new Lower School building using a combination of cash reserves and prudent financing, while sustaining important programs such as professional development and financial aid. Concurrently, the School continues to reinvest in our most important resources — our faculty and staff, our innovative programs, and other facility enhancements — in order to maintain St. Andrew’s level of excellence and commitment to our students.

The Board is encouraged by our positive enrollment trend that is reflected in growth in every division of the School, as well as the continued strong support of our donor community which enables St. Andrew’s to provide an extraordinary teaching and learning environment, so that we may know and inspire each child.
