In praise of CVSN

id you write a ‘thank you’ note yet?

If you’re an independent heavy-duty service provider who stands to benefit from the revolutionary heavy-duty access to repair information Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was announced last month, you owe a debt of gratitude to the Commercial Vehicle Solutions Network (CVSN).

The amount of time and money CVSN has committed over the last decade to defend your business and way of life is unbelievable. The independent aftermarket doesn’t score this win without them.

In forming the Commercial Vehicle Right to Repair Coalition, CVSN was able to pull support from across the aftermarket, and create an alliance to stand toe-to-toe with the heavy-duty OEM community. The Commercial Vehicle Right to Repair Coalition made the independent aftermarket formidable, and CVSN was its backbone.

This could have gone another way.

When the automotive industry agreed to its right to repair MOU last year, it left the heavy-duty industry out.

The two sides had worked together to pass legislation in Massachusetts and were working toward other state legislation when the light-duty OEMs relented, and agreed to talk compromise. But their heavy-duty counterparts didn’t join them, and rather than wait around, the light-duty aftermarket seized

its opportunity. A national automotive MOU was signed in January 2014.

You can’t blame the automotive aftermarket for what it did.

It had been battling its OEM counterparts for many years—longer than the heavy-duty independent aftermarket— and when finally presented with a solution it could accept, it jumped on it.

The Commercial Vehicle Right to Repair Coalition made the independent aftermarket formidable, and CVSN was its backbone.

That was the right call. Had the situation been reversed, I would have advocated heavy-duty independent aftermarket leaders do the same thing.

When you battle like the auto aftermarket had for years, you don’t turn down a truce when one is finally presented. Especially one that covers an overwhelming majority of your demands.

But when the automotive industry decided to move forward alone, it put our industry in a tight spot. The heavyduty aftermarket’s need for a right to repair agreement was just as strong as its light-duty contemporaries, but it lacked a similar level of public support.

That’s when CVSN really stepped up.

at Total Truck Parts and chairman of the Commercial Vehicle Right to Repair Coalition, and Dave Scheer, CEO at Inland Truck Parts, CVSN didn’t let the momentum it had gained from its work with the automotive industry go to waste.

The group lobbied harder than ever for a resolution. The work in Massachusetts and other states had been exhaustive, but it was progress.

It was about the time the auto industry published its MOU that Karon and CVSN willed its Coalition to the negotiating table with the Truck & Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA).

Movement was slow but steady. Neither side wanted to return to legislative talks—CVSN didn’t want to retreat, and OEMs had no interest in fighting the same battle 49 more times—so, in time, arguments and differences gave way to compromise and acceptance.

CVSN helped lead the way.

“I think it is vitally important to understand the roll CVSN played in the successful achievement of this MOU,” Karon says. “The [CVSN] board fully funded the effort with almost all of its discretionary budget. Both Dave Scheer and I had unquestioned support from the board and our success really belongs to them.”

So three months from now when your techs are resetting diagnostic codes in your bay instead of driving 20 minutes to your nearest dealer, remember who helped give you that opportunity.

And remember to say ‘thank you’.

Taking advantages of opportunities

I

cut my writer’s teeth in the newspaper business.

Early on in my career, Alabama’s attorney general made a major push on municipal government to eliminate meetings not open to the public. Generally, a body charged with governing the public is prohibited from meeting “secretly.” There are a few exceptions, but there are not many circumstances where a “closed meeting” is okay.

The state’s principal legal officer made it clear to newspapers that in order for this effort to do what was intended, newspapers had to be vocal in challenging closed meetings when and if they happened. He warned that failure to do so would cause the push to lose momentum and weaken the focus on stopping the practice.

Newspapers mostly responded the same way they had for years; whining about it locally in print and in civic meetings and coffee shops. Few official complaints were filled. Not much changed. Illegal meetings, while never prevalent, are still illegal but still take place.

The aftermarket has a similar opportunity facing them with its recent victory with regard to right to repair. A lot of time and money got behind the effort, and the investment paid off. The aftermarket scored a major win in having access to the same data as OEs. While not yet legally binding, the agreed upon Memorandum of

The aftermarket only “wins” its right to repair by taking 100 percent advantage of 100 percent of the opportunities.

This includes wiring diagrams, information locating sensors, the ability to reflash and reset onboard computers, as-built VIN to OE part number information and any specialized tools required to complete vehicle diagnostics.

That is significant, just as the investment the aftermarket now needs to make in its capabilities will be significant.

Having access to this data is one

thing. Actually taking advantage of it is another.

In his column inside this edition, Lucas Deal writes the people behind the heavy duty aftermarket’s push to get this access are due a “thank you.” And he’s right.

By all means, drop them a nice email or thank you card. Buy them a drink at Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week, or spot them a $10 chip on the blackjack table at the Mirage. They’ve earned all of that.

But the best way to thank them is to invest in the technologies needed to help your businesses take advantage of the opportunity in front of you.

Maybe that is in the form of upgraded or new equipment.

It almost certainly will mean some of your staff will need training.

The worst thing the aftermarket can do is not make the capital investments needed to maximize the benefit, and show the OEs that the aftermarket wasn’t prepared for the next step; for taking this push to the next level.

Going headfirst into putting this to work in your business gives the Commercial Vehicle Right to Repair Coalition even more teeth when it launches another push to get access to telematics data, access to data for lighter-weight vehicles, access to OE-level training, or something else.

Heavy-duty Industry Reaches Right To Repair Agreement The Commercial Vehicle Solutions Network (CVSN) and the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA), together with the Equipment and Tool Institute (ETT), the Auto Care Association (AutoCare), and Heavy Duty Aftermarket Canada announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on access to heavy-duty service information for model year 2010 and later trucks and buses over 10,000 lbs. sold in the United States and Canada.

The landmark MOU will ensure that vehicle owners and independent repair facilities have access to the OEMcontrolled service information, tools and parts that they need to safety and properly repair commercial vehicles.

The MOU also memorializes the current industry practice of providing diagnostic tool information to third-party aftermarket tool manufacturers, thus providing owners with service options when maintaining or repairing vehicles.

Marc Karon, president at Total Truck Parts and chairman of the Commercial Right to Repair Coalition, sponsored by CVSN and representing independent service providers across the U.S., says the MOU is a huge accomplishment for both parties.

“With today’s complex, computercontrolled heavy-duty vehicles, having access to the correction information and latest diagnostic tools is essential to being able to complete repairs for our customers. The MOU addresses our need for reasonable access to OEM service information and diagnostic tools. I am pleased that we were able to finalize a practical and workable solution through the MOU process.”

Under the terms of the MOU, the participating industry associations will work together to monitor the exchange of service information and address any

information access issues with the goal of helping to ensure that vehicles are properly and safely maintained with the correct parts and tools.

“One of the significant benefits of the MOU is that it addresses the unique characteristics of the heavy-duty vehicle manufacturing industry, as well as the special needs of the independent heavyduty repair shops,” says Jed Mandel, EMA president. “With that accomplished, we can avoid a patch-work and potentially disruptive effort to regulate service information through government action.”

Mack Pulls Out Of Mid-America Trucking Show Mack Trucks is latest trucking OEM electing to skip the 2016 Mid America Trucking Show (MATS), scheduled for March 31 to April 2, 2016, in Louisville, Ky. MATS has already lost commitments from Mack’s sister company Volvo Trucks, along with Navistar and Daimler Trucks for 2016.

With several other truck makers having already announced their plans to not attend next year, Mack was

concerned about reduced attendance and a diminished return on investment from our participation in the show, says Chris Heffner, Mack Truck’s manager of public relations. Heffner adds Mack’s decision to not participate in MATS next year does not affect the company’s plans to attend other industry events in 2016.

“We have decided to use the funds we would have spent on MATS for other customer engagement efforts.”

Freightliner of St. Cloud Wins Successful Dealer Award Freightliner of St. Cloud was named the 2015 Successful Dealer Award winner on Aug. 26 at the CV Outlook in Dallas.

Founded in 1963, Freightliner of St. Cloud – a finalist for the same award last year – is the largest supplier to the transportation industry in Central Minnesota and the oldest continually-owned truck dealer in the area.

The dealership received high marks from Successful Dealer for its involvement in the community, specifically the local chapter of the Boys and Girls Club. This year, the company received the 2015 Boys & Girls Club Larry Haws Champion of Youth Humanitarian Award.

Michelin Americas Truck Tires announces Quality Tire Company will join the Michelin Commercial Service Network (MCSN).

Michelin says the family-owned business operates four commercial/retail locations in Salt Lake City, Orem and St. George, Utah, and Billings, Mont. As part of the MCSN, Quality Tire will offer a complete range of services, including repairs, inspection and alignments, Michelin OnCall 24/7/365 emergency road service (ERS), and Michelin Tire Care preventative tire monitoring, the company says.

Alcoa Investing In 3D Printing Alcoa is investing $60 million to expand its R&D center near Pittsburgh, Pa. and accelerate the development of advanced 3D-printing materials and processes.

“Combining our expertise in metal alloys, manufacturing, design and product qualification, we will push beyond the limits of today’s additive manufacturing,” says Alcoa Chairman and CEO Klaus Kleinfeld.

The company also unveiled its

new Ampliforge process, a technique combining advanced materials, designs and additive and traditional manufacturing processes. Using the Ampliforge process, Alcoa designs and 3D-prints a near complete part, then treats it using a traditional manufacturing process, such as forging.

Alcoa says the process can enhance the properties of 3D-printed parts, such as increasing toughness and strength,

versus parts made solely by additive manufacturing while also significantly reducing material input and simplifying production relative to traditional forging processes.

BFGoodrich Extends Tire Warranty BFGoodrich Commercial Truck Tires has extended its warranty for commercial truck tires and casings, effective on claims filed on or after Sept. 1, 2015.

Reflecting the brand’s proven performance, BFGoodrich says the warranty coverage against defects in workmanship and materials for all BFGoodrich commercial truck tires will now extend to the life of the original tread or five years from the date of manufacture, whichever occurs first. For tires used in long-haul service, the new extended warranty will cover workmanship and materials for up to two retreads or five years from date of manufacture, BFGoodrich says.

SAFETY RECALLS East Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Refuse, Dump, Dolly Tipper Genesis, Frame Genesis, Frameless Genesis, Frame S&P, and Truck Dolly trailers manufactured Aug. 26, 2013, to Feb. 24, 2015. The affected trailers may have an insufficient amount of grease in the wheel end hubs. If there is a lack of grease in the wheel end hubs, the wheel bearings may overheat, increasing the risk of a vehicle fire. There also is the possibility that the wheel can come off the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Forest River is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Starcraft All Star XL transit buses manufactured by October 17, 2012, to November 26, 2012, and 2013 Starcraft XLT transit buses manufactured Oct. 14, 2012, to Nov. 26, 2012.

The affected vehicles are equipped with Navistar engines that have fuel injectors that may fail. If one or more fuel injectors fail, the engine may misfire, causing a loss of performance, possibly resulting in an engine stall and increasing the risk of a crash.

Mack Trucks is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Pinnacle (CXU) trucks manufactured from Oct. 3, 2012, through Feb. 18, 2014 and equipped with Meritor air disc brakes. In the affected vehicles, the brake chambers may have been incorrectly mounted resulting in internal contamination of the air brake calipers. Contamination of the calipers may cause a loss of brakes on one wheel, lengthening the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Mack Trucks is recalling certain model year 2011-2016 Granite (GU) trucks manufactured Sept. 24, 2011, to July 1, 2015. The affected trucks may be equipped with an air brake system reservoir that does not have a sufficient volume.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, “Air Brake Systems.” If the air brake system reservoir has as insufficient volume, braking performance may be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.

Mack Trucks is recalling certain model year 2013 and 2015 Titan (TD), model year 2014 and 2015 Pinnacle (CHU), and model years 2009-2010, 2012, and 2014-2016 Granite (GU) trucks. The chassis harness and air lines may not be properly clipped to the crossmember, which can allow the cables and air lines to fall and get twisted in the driveline. If the electrical cables and air lines were to fall and get tangled in the driveline, it could affect the electrical system and braking system, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

The following are safety recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 FEC52 vehicles manufactured Feb. 3, 2011, to March 31, 2015, and 2012-2014 FEC72 and FEC92 vehicles manufactured Feb. 3, 2011, to Jan. 9, 2013. The affected vehicles have brake pad shims that may rust or corrode after exposure to snow and ice melting chemicals that have been applied to roadways. Rust or corrosion will result in swelling of the shims causing an increased brake pedal stroke. The extra brake travel may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Paccar is recalling certain model year 20122016 Peterbilt 365, 367, 384, 386, 388, 389, 567, 579, and 587 trucks manufactured Jan. 13, 2011, to April 20, 2015. The affected trucks, equipped with extended-body Leece Neville alternators, have alternator charge cables that may chafe against a formed metal freon discharge line. If the alternator cable rubs through its insulation, an electrical short may occur, increasing the risk of a fire.

Paccar is recalling certain model year 2016 Kenworth T440, T470, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 trucks manufactured Feb. 16, 2015, to March 9, 2015. The affected vehicles are equipped with an SR-7 spring brake valve assembly that may have had the primary and secondary service brake applications installed in reverse. In the event of a failure in the primary or secondary circuit, the redundant circuit would not provide adequate service brake functionality. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 121, “Air Brake Systems.”

A loss of braking ability would increase the risk of a crash.

Paccar is recalling certain model year 20112016 Kenworth T440, T470, T660, T680, and T880 trucks manufactured Jan. 14, 2010, to May 22, 2015, and equipped with HID Headlamps and the option for Daytime Running Lamps (DRL). The DRLs are required to deactivate when the hazard warning lights are activated, however, the DRLs on these vehicles override the hazard flashing functionality after the brake pedal is pushed for more than two seconds. Normal hazard flashing functionality returns once the service brake is released. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.” If the hazard warning lamps are overridden by the DRL, oncoming vehicles

may fail to be warned, increasing the risk of a crash.

Spartan Motors is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 K2, and K3 vehicles manufactured Nov. 19, 2013, to May 7, 2015. Power could be lost in the vehicle’s air suspension system. A failure of the air suspension system could result in a loss of some vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Strick Trailers, LLC, is recalling certain model year 2013 Dry Freight Van Trailers, model number S4280E99NFWOP, manufactured Oct. 1, 2012, to July 15, 2013. As built, the trailers have tires that are more than 12 in. forward of the rear of the trailer. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 224, “Rear Impact Protection.” Failing to meet the rear impact protection requirements increases the risk of injury to occupants of a vehicle that collides with the rear of the trailer.

Terex South Dakota, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Aerial Devices and Digger Derrick trucks manufactured from June 3, 2013, through Nov. 13, 2014. Due to an issue in assembly, the vertical cylinders and, by extension, the outriggers may drift when loaded.

Outrigger drifting could result in the platform falling and seriously injuring platform occupants or bystanders.

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 VNL and VNM trucks manufactured May 31, 2011, to Dec. 1, 2014.

In the affected trucks, the trailer hand brake handle may not to return to the off position due to being restricted by the cut out in the trim panel. If the brake handle does return to the off position, the trailer service brakes may drag causing the wheel end to overheat and potentially cause a wheel end fire or tire blowout.

Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

Volvo Trucks NA is recalling certain model year 2012-2016 VAH trucks manufactured Jan. 31, 2011, to June 25, 2015, and equipped with a sealed drag link. In the affected trucks, the draglink ball socket boot may be damaged due to the angle of the ball stud. A damaged boot may allow contaminants to enter and corrode the ball socket. Corrosion will accelerate wear of the ball, possibly resulting in the ball joint separating from the socket, causing loss of steering and an increased risk of a crash.

or the third year in a row, Sadler Power Train has been named a finalist for the Truck Parts & Service Distributor of the Year award.

And also for the third year in row, President John Sadler says he was positively blindsided when he heard the news.

“I have to be honest, when I first heard I was a little set back by it. A little stunned. It’s such a great, great honor and we are just so appreciative,” he says of the recognition.

When asked how his company keeps rising to the top, Sadler immediately points to his employees.

“You have to see all of the great people I get to work with every day,” he says. “To see how hard they work for this company and the great ideas they come up with for this company is amazing.”

The latter, he says, is

And the company has grown in other part categories as well. Sadler cites turbochargers, engine start modules and maintenance tools as other product categories new to the business in 2015. In each case, Sadler Power Train’s employees have responded to that growth by actively learning about the products, and then using their new expertise to help promote them to customers.

The latter has been especially rewarding, says Sadler.

Regarding engine components and turbochargers, “We’ve told customers for 40 years we didn’t have that and now we do. Now we can give them that part they’ve been asking for,” he says.

hen it was introduced last decade, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Compliance Safety and Accountability (CSA) program was touted as the future of safety in heavyduty trucking.

Now almost five years later, CSA remains the industry’s grandest, most-expansive performance monitoring program in history.

CSA monitors fleets and drivers on seven different behavior analysis and safety improvement categories, called BASICs. While most of these categories are geared toward driver attentiveness, capability and performance, the last five years have shown the one BASIC vehicle owners have the toughest problem managing isn’t driver health or skill related—it’s vehicle maintenance.

Since being implemented in December 2010, more than 70 percent of all CSA violations found during fixed and roadside inspections in the United States have fallen under the Vehicle Maintenance BASIC. That’s more than 16.7 million violations in total (through 2015), or 10,774 per day.

It doesn’t take a mathematician long to look at those totals and see the wealth of parts and service opportunities CSA has provided the aftermarket.

Inspection data analysis can deliver aftermarket businesses violation trends specific to their individual markets, and allow them to tailor sales plans to best fit the customers they serve.

CSA highlights customers’ problems; CSA data shows the aftermarket exactly how to provide solutions, says James Vogel, general manager at RigDig and vice president of business analytics at RandallReilly (parent company of Truck Parts & Service).

CSA data “helps a service provider identify fleets who could use their services,” he says.

violations must be corrected before the affected driver or vehicle can return to service,” FMCSA says.

Used in conjunction with motor carrier census data and carrier investigations, inspection data also provides the groundwork for carrier CSA scores and the SMS carrier information database.

But aftermarket businesses can gleam plenty of information from inspection data alone.

Records of every vehicle inspection submitted to FMCSA since CSA’s introduction in 2010 are available for purchase, and FMCSA provides inspection updates to data subscribers on a monthly basis.

Vogel says it doesn’t take long once you start leafing through inspection data for trends to emerge.

And when supplemented with carrier information and vehicle population statistics, Vigillo CEO Steven Bryan says aftermarket businesses can really capitalize on the sales potential CSA has dropped in the industry’s lap.

Now five years into CSA, he’s surprised more aftermarket businesses aren’t doing so already.

“I think that’s been a headscratcher for me from the very beginning,” Bryan says.

“Maintenance [businesses] have never really gotten heated up about CSA data and I don’t know why.

“It’s a tremendous wealth of data about [the

aftermarket’s] customers and to ignore it is just a lost opportunity.”

It’s with that in mind that Truck Parts & Service has turned to RigDig to help highlight national inspection statistics (shown in the corresponding images) and trends that have appeared during the first five years of CSA program.

Though these trends only scratch the surface of the information that you can extract from CSA data, they clearly show how much detail is available to help inform and educate aftermarket businesses.

More than 25 percent of all-time CSA violations incurred through February were lighting related. That’s more than the total number of violations for Driver Fitness, Hours-of-Service, Unsafe Driving, Hazardous Materials and Controlled Substance BASICs combined during the same period.

An inoperative lamp has been the most common

violation in 32 states since CSA debuted, and ranks as a top-three violation in every state. Tennessee is the only state where lighting violations account for less than 10 percent of all-time CSA violations (8.2 percent).

Tire Troubles: The U.S. fleet is filled with bald tires.

FMCSA says 2014 inspections turned up more than 183,000 cases where tires showed a tread depth of less than 2/32 in. That total led to 15,245 out of service violations.

And the problem isn’t limited to any specific area.

California dominate CSA inspection and violation totals.

The states are Nos. 1 and 2 in CSA inspections and vehicle maintenance violations, and account for nearly 28 percent of total inspections, RigDig data shows.

But one of the states that follow those statistical monoliths in total and percentage of inspections is a bit surprising.

Maryland is one of America’s smaller states geographically, but its dense population and central eastern location help place it fifth in total CSA inspections (third in fixed inspections) and seventh in vehicle maintenance violations all-time.

Conversely, inspection numbers are below demographical projections in Big Ten country. Both Ohio and Michigan are top ten states in population but are below the top ten for inspections (Ohio 13, Michigan 22).

Inspectors are toughest at the border: Eight of the 20 counties that recorded at least 20,000 inspections during 2014 were located along the border between the United States and Mexico.

Eleven of the 12 other counties to meet the 20,000 threshold also were located in California and Texas, with Chicago’s Cook County being the only outlier.

No U.S. county bordering Canada totaled more than 10,000 inspections in 2014.

Acquiring CSA data The CSA program has produced a gargantuan amount of data since its December 2010 debut. Aftermarket businesses looking to harness that data for use in their business can acquire it from several locations.

Inspection data All state inspection data is available for purchase from the FMCSA through a subscription service, says James Vogel, general manager at RigDig and vice president of business analytics at Randall Reilly.

Separate from carrier SMS data, raw inspection data can be acquired from December 2010 through September. Vogel says the data is distributed by the FMCSA to its subscribers as a comprehensive document at the end of each month.

But purchasing inspection data directly from FMCSA can be cost prohibitive for most aftermarket businesses.

And that’s where third-party analytics operations, such as RigDig, come in.

These businesses can produce detailed CSA inspection, violation and carrier data analysis for any company in the trucking industry. These reports, which identify and investigate trends found within CSA’s data, deliver service providers a blueprint for creating sales strategies to entice new business. “[CSA data] helps a service provider identify fleets that may be located outside their area of operation, but frequently travel within their area of operation,” Vogel says.

Carrier data Fleet data is available for free through CSA’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) database online at https://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/SMS/.

The SMS database allows interested parties to search for fleets based on name, DOT number or location. Once a carrier is found, the site offers a wealth of information about their inspection and CSA performance over the previous 24 months.

The duty cycles found in the trucking industry today are vast, and with vehicle ownership expenses constantly on the rise, spec’ing the right components or system configurations for each cycle can sometimes save customers thousands of dollars in annual fuel and maintenance expenses.

For customers with substantial on-highway duty cycles, one spec’ing option that offers significant cost savings is downspeeding.

“At its core, [downspeeding] means lowering engine revolutions at a given speed to improve fuel economy,” says Tim Norton, product manager, Powertrain marketing at Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA).

The concept works by lowering axle ratios and increasing driveline torque to lower engine RPMs at cruising speeds, reducing friction within the engine and increasing fuel efficiency.

Downspeeding has been a known concept in commercial trucking for decades. But it wasn’t until the recession of 2008 and corresponding diesel price spike that downspeeding transitioned from a fringe idea into an industry necessity.

Today, nearly every OEM offers at least one transmission and driveline package built specifically for downspeeding.

Good aftermarket businesses should be experts on all of them.

Depending on diesel prices, manufacturers say downspeeding can save customers $300 to $2,000 per truck per year in fuel costs.

Lite-Check introduces its new Verifier trailer inspection system using the Verifier tablet.

According to Lite-Check, the Verifier trailer interface will test and record the operating systems’ (lights, brakes, ABS) data, and save to a file. An app listing the physical DOT inspection items will then direct the operator to record conditions and photos on the Verifier tablet.

The trailer file will be transmitted to the office server for processing, Lite-Check says.

The Lite-Check process also will provide a ‘verifiable’ file recording the trailer VIN, operator, location, time/date, along with the trailer information required for a DOT trailer report.

Gates Corp. has added to its popular hybrid polymer hose line by introducing a new water hose and whip air hose.

Gates says the hybrid polymer water hose has heavy-duty nickel-plated fittings and spring guard and comes in multiple sizes.

The company says the whip air hose reduces wear and tear to help prolong air hose life and is also available in different lengths. And Gates says both hoses are designed to not kink or curl.

Spindle locking nut system SKF has announced the availability of a new spindle nut locking system for both tractors and trailers that it says provides a high degree of strength.

According to SKF, the two-piece SKF spindle nut locking system includes a hardened internal tab lock washer and a forged precision machined flange nut – a combination that meshes with precision-formed threads to provide exceptional strength.

2-in-1 Air combination assembly Phillips Industries has released a new 2-in-1 Air Combination Assembly that spiral wraps together the emergency and service air lines. The assemblies, in 12 ft., 15 ft. and 20 ft. lengths, include a hanging clamp and stainless steel clip for easy installation.

The Phillips blue and red rubber air lines are outfitted with tractor end swivel fittings for easy installation, spring guards for strain relief, and large color-coded handle grips for easy coupling and uncoupling.

All Phillips air lines provide excellent abrasion resistance, resist cracking, kinking and weathering and are SAE J1402 compliant, the company says.

Various aftermarket products Dorman HD Solutions has introduced a variety of new former dealer only parts to the aftermarket.

Among the products are a vehicle side step, turn signal assembly, ABS wheel speed sensors, headlight bezels and door handles.

Five new aftermarket part numbers NEWSTAR has introduced five new part numbers to its aftermarket product line.

The company’s new products include a grille for International mediumduty trucks, severe-duty trucks, commercial buses and heavy-duty tractors; a countershaft assembly for transmissions; a receiver dryer, also for various International truck and bus models, a non-locking fuel cap for multiple Mack applications, and an AC compressor assembly for Cat C10, C15 and C16 engine models.

NEWSTAR says each product replaces a previous part number.

Heavy-duty security products Fontaine Parts Connection has introduced four new products to increase security for heavy-duty vehicles and freight.

The new products include a “clean hands” kingpin lock, locks for the brake valves on the dash, locking nuts for the wheels, and locks for the glad hands to keep trailers from being moved without authorization.

The products also can be used to prevent movement of trucks or trailers during repairs, the company says.

New LED lamp with three-dimensional lens Optronics has new HD 500 Series LED stop, tail, turn lamps, designed with a three-dimensional lens with a raised linear focal point in the center.

Both the four-inch round and six-inch oval lamps are engineered with an 18-diode configuration that produces a light pattern that stands out for both its design and brightness.

The HD 500 Series are 264 percent brighter than the law requires and 15 percent brighter than Optronics’ standard 10-diode stop, tail, turn lamps, the company says.

Multiple wheel chock options US Cargo Control has added new wheel chocks, including both wedge and pyramid styles, in sizes intended for use with several different truck types.

All are sold in single quantities or in packs of two, with special bulk quantity pricing available upon request.

Trailer door holding tool TODCO has a new Hold Open Door Keeper, a bottom roller holder that allows an open roll-up door to rest in the open position behind the header.

The hinged roller is attached to the bottom door panel. When the door is in the open position, the top panel rests behind the header. In this position, the header shields the door from potential costly damage during loading and unloading, TODCO says.
