LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
What I do love is bringing people together. Give me a beautifully set table, a house full of family and friends, a great bottle of wine, and a reason to gather, and I’m all in. I’m happy to handle the appetizers, salads, and desserts while leaving the culinary masterpieces to the professionals. Thankfully, my taste buds have matured over the years. While I may have started life as a very cautious eater, I’ve grown to appreciate great food and the experiences that come with it. And that’s what this issue is all about. Since I may not be the first person you’d call for restaurant recommendations, we brought in the experts. Inside these pages, you’ll discover local favorites, hidden gems, talented chefs, and flavors from around the world that can all be found right here in Richardson. From Moon Wolf Provisions to Chef Eloy at Soccer Spectrum and so much more, this issue is a celebration of the incredible food scene in our community.
S
ome say food is their love language. Growing up a picky eater who survived on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and insisted that nothing on my dinner plate touch, I can confidently say food was never mine. And if I’m being completely honest, cooking isn’t either. I know there are people who love planning the meal, shopping for the ingredients, spending hours in the kitchen, and creating something beautiful from scratch. I admire those people tremendously. I just happen to be married to one.

I also can’t close this letter without mentioning Best of Richardson 2026. Voting is officially underway, and the response has been incredible. One of my favorite things about Best of Richardson is that the winners are chosen by you. Our readers, neighbors, business owners, and residents are the ones who shine a spotlight on the people and businesses that make Richardson special. We use a third party platform to host the ballot, verify votes, and tally results, ensuring the process remains fair and community driven. So if you haven’t voted yet, now is the perfect time to support your favorites and help them earn the recognition they deserve. Wishing you a wonderful summer filled with great food, great company, and all the things that make Richardson feel like home.

HEALTHY LIVING
THE SANDWICH GENERATION How to Navigate Life in the Middle By Deborah Dobbs
T
he first time I heard the term Sandwich Generation, my daughter was a child, and my parents were thriving. Until then, I hadn’t really considered the idea that my parents might need me someday. Suddenly I viewed the future differently.
your parents’ memory loss is minor, and you can provide the help they need with a phone call. You worry, but you’re not losing sleep yet. Disaster hasn’t struck. I would compare that sandwich situation to a fluffy muffaletta. There’s room to breathe in there.
Muffaletta or Panini? Maybe your children are young adults, but they still need you. My daughter, for example, is married and establishing her career as a barber. That said, she’s twenty years old and still needs my help navigating the big stuff: leases, health insurance, and a new marriage. Maybe
But maybe you find yourself packing your kiddo’s lunch while arguing on the phone with Medicare, and your mom’s various and sundry appointments often make you late to your son’s baseball games. You might spend your lunch break scheduling your daughter’s annual physical and your dad’s MRI. Mom left
10
RICHARDSON LIFE MAGAZINE
the stove on and started a fire. Dad’s car has been totaled. I would compare your sandwich to a smashed panini. You’re the kind of exhausted that convinces you that caffeine is a food group. Stress with a Side of Grief The stress is real, but there’s also the grief nobody warns you about: watching your parents fade away. We can’t prepare for the sharp, quiet ache when they don’t know what day it is or get angry with you for “taking the keys away.” You’re losing them in slow motion, often while pretending everything’s fine for the kids. Grief also comes with your own
unrealized or delayed dreams. Some parents look forward to the freedom that comes with an empty nest, only to find they’re busier than ever due to their own parents’ needs.
that hasn’t moved since 2019. Laughter is a powerful elixir. Encourage your parents to laugh, too, maybe by re-watching their favorite comedies or sharing funny stories, perhaps for the 100th time.
How to Cope In 2017, my friend (and fellow JJ Pearce graduate) Scott Silknitter co-authored a book titled Put Your Mask on First! A Caregiver’s Guide to Self-Care. He wrote it after witnessing the toll his father’s Parkinson’s disease and dementia had on his mother, his full-time caregiver. The chapters are quick enough to read during a trip to the toilet because sometimes that’s the only break a caregiver gets. I highly recommend the book, and I have a few additional tips that are working for me:
Delegate like a boss. Your teenagers can mow the lawn or run to the store. Your siblings? Assign them tasks.
Hang on to Humor. Try to chuckle rather than cry when Dad asks for the third time where his keys are to the car
Use delivery apps. Apps like Instacart and DoorDash (for you or your parents) can save loads of time and energy. Grieve out loud. Talk to a friend or therapist. Journal. Sit on the back porch with a beer and let the tears come. Bottling it up can turn you mean, so Let. It. Out. Show yourself grace and kindness. You might swing from sad to angry, and this is normal and okay. Holding two generations together is righteous work.

RISD EDUCATORS’ CORNER
CELEBRATING RICHARDSON ISD’S CLASS OF 2026 Submitted by Richardson ISD Photos courtesy of Richardson ISD
A
t Richardson ISD, the Class of 2026 represents the very best of what is possible when students are empowered to learn, grow, and pursue their goals. Guided by the district’s North Star Goal—that every student, teacher, and leader will meet or exceed their academic growth goal and the Profile of a Graduate—this year’s graduates have demonstrated excellence both inside and outside the classroom. Throughout their time in Richardson ISD, these students have celebrated milestones, overcome challenges, discovered their passions, and prepared for bright

futures. As they begin the next chapter of their lives, RISD proudly celebrates more than 2,400 graduates whose accomplishments reflect years of dedication, perseverance, and support from educators, families, and the community. Together, the Class of 2026 has earned more than $79 million in scholarships, with more than 99% meeting or exceeding state College, Career, or Military Readiness standards. Approximately 52% earned college credit through Advanced Placement, OnRamps, or Dual Credit coursework, demonstrating their commitment to academic excellence and readiness for life beyond high school.
The graduates featured in this special edition exemplify the qualities outlined in RISD’s Profile of a Graduate. Through leadership, service, resilience, and determination, they have embraced opportunities to learn and grow while pursuing ambitious goals for the future. When Isaiah Villa transferred to Berkner High School as a sophomore, he was searching for new opportunities and a broader educational experience. He quickly found his place by becoming involved in nearly every aspect of campus life, including Encore Choir, Ramblers, Student Council, AVID, Principal’s Advisory Council, and the Business CTE pathway. Through these experiences, Isaiah developed leadership skills, built lasting
friendships, and earned a reputation for helping others feel welcome. His peers recognized his outgoing spirit by naming him “Social Butterfly” and crowning him Prom King. This fall, Isaiah will attend the University of North Texas to study kinesiology with plans to eventually open his own physical therapy practice.
such as Lead Well and TI-12. Graduating as the No. 3-ranked student in her class, Peri earned multiple scholarships and will attend Texas A&M University to study biomedical sciences. Her commitment to service, leadership, and academic excellence has positioned her well for future success.
At Lake Highlands High School, Peri Howell transformed a lifelong dream of becoming a doctor into a clear path forward. Through the school’s health sciences pathway, she gained valuable hands-on experiences that strengthened her passion for medicine and helping others. Along the way, she emerged as a leader through soccer, where she served as team captain, as well as organizations
Pearce High School senior Jose Patino discovered his passion for engineering while spending time alongside his father on construction sites. Watching projects take shape sparked an interest in designing and building structures that improve communities. As a first-generation college student, Jose took advantage of opportunities such as AVID, dual credit, and OnRamps courses to prepare for college

and expand his ambitions. His efforts resulted in acceptance to all 12 colleges to which he applied, multiple scholarship awards, and a full scholarship to attend The University of Texas at Austin, where he will study civil engineering. Beyond academics, Jose served as a mentor through Pearce’s Starting Off Strong program and credits his parents’ sacrifices and support for inspiring him to pursue his dreams. For Richardson High School senior Chloe Grimes, the dream of becoming a teacher began early. Inspired by her mother, Ashley Grimes, who taught her in third and fourth grade at Terrace Elementary, Chloe witnessed firsthand the lasting impact a caring educator can have on students. Determined to follow a similar path, she participated in RISD’s Grow 2 Teach program, serving as a teaching intern at Arapaho Classical Magnet for two years.
14

Alongside her classroom experience, Chloe excelled in the Gifted and Talented program, performed in orchestra, and served as assistant director of Eagle Eye News. Her hard work earned her a full four-year scholarship to Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education through the prestigious QuestBridge National College Match program. She plans to study elementary and special education and hopes to one day return to Richardson ISD as a teacher. These students represent just a small sample of the incredible graduates who make up Richardson ISD’s Class of 2026. Their stories reflect the opportunities available across the district and the dedication of students who embrace challenges, pursue their passions, and strive to make a positive impact on the world around them. Congratulations, Class of 2026. Richardson ISD celebrates your achievements, is proud of your accomplishments, and looks forward to all you will achieve in the years ahead. You will always have a home in RISD. RICHARDSONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM

t Soccer Spectrum, the community has always been just as big as the game. It is where families gather after practices, friends meet up for matches, teams celebrate wins, and Richardson comes together. Now, with Azzurri Pizzeria + Bar, the food has become part of what makes that experience feel complete. RICHARDSONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM

Led by Head Chef Eloy Tejeda Costeno, Azzurri brings a level of food people would expect from a pizzeria, not tucked inside a soccer facility. This is not concession-stand pizza or forgettable game-day food. Eloy and the Azzurri team have built a menu around fresh preparation, thoughtful flavors, comfort, consistency, and intention. “I’d describe my style as honest and straightforward,” Eloy says. “I’m not trying to reinvent anything. I just want to make food that feels comforting and made with intention. If people can taste the care that went into it, then I’ve done my job.” For Eloy, cooking started simply. He grew up helping his mom in the kitchen, where he first discovered the joy of making something by hand and watching people enjoy it. What started naturally at home eventually became a career built around the same idea: food should make people feel taken care of. That mindset is at the center of Azzurri. The menu is familiar in the best way, with dishes people already love, but each item is made with better technique and extra attention. For guests who may walk in expecting basic bar food, Azzurri offers something worth driving for. “The food at Azzurri is all about quality and heart,” Eloy says. “It’s familiar, but with a level of care you don’t always expect in a sports environment. We want people to feel like they’re getting a real meal, not just something quick to fill up on.” That difference is especially meaningful at Soccer Spectrum, where the crowd is always changing. On any given day, Azzurri may be serving players after a league game, families between practices, fans watching a match, guests attending a private event, or people stopping in simply because they heard about the food. The menu has to be approachable, but it also has to be memorable. “Most people expect basic bar food, something fast, something fried, something forgettable,” Eloy says. “At Azzurri, we try to go beyond that.”

Chef Eloy Tejeda Costeno
Azzurri’s pizza is the item Eloy is most proud of. Made with fresh, handmade dough and a sauce he spent years perfecting, the pizza reflects the scratchmade care behind the kitchen. Eloy says it took years of trial and error to find the right balance, especially with the sauce. He adjusted it little by little until it became what he always imagined it should be. “It’s simple, but it represents a lot of patience and learning,” he says. “I’m proud of how it turned out.” At Azzurri, that pride is easy to taste. The food is not just something on the side of Soccer Spectrum, and it is not only for people coming in to play or watch a game. It has become a reason all its own to visit. Whether guests are here for soccer, a private event, a night out, or simply a really good pizza made with care, Azzurri gives people a reason to stay, gather, and come back. MOON WOLF PROVISIONS By Karen Chaney
L
ongtime Richardson resident Richie Conry said when he opened Moon Wolf Provisions in April it was a course of action that started brewing about 25 years ago on a flight to India. “We were going out there to visit a friend who was living there—we were going to all the mountain towns,” Conry said. “It was a 14-hour straight flight, and I was drawing up a café in a sketchbook.

I knew I wanted to open a café in a little mountain town. That would be cool.”
About six years ago, the café idea resurfaced.
Have goat trailer, will travel In the ensuing quarter-century, Conry owned and operated a design and remodel company where he did a variety of construction projects including bathroom remodels, custom work, building tiny houses and more. He was also a real estate professional.
“Today we’re going to go get a goat trailer and I’m going to turn it into a coffee shop,” Conry said he told his daughter. “I didn’t need to do it, I just thought it would be fun.” Conry transformed the vintage goat trailer into a traveling coffee shop using
supplies he had from his construction business. He worked his way onto the vendor circuit including nearby events such as Bishop Bazaar in Dallas and further destinations like Big Bend. Conry kept this up for about four years which allowed him to strengthen his coffee aficionado chops. From mobile to stationary When his mobile cafe started showing its age, Conry knew it was time to pivot. “The trailer was falling apart, all my vehicles were getting worn down from pulling it,” Conry said. “The goat trailer was tired—it was born in the 70s.” When searching for a permanent coffee shop location, Conry wanted a standalone building with ample parking, easy access and a location close to home. He set sights on the vacant building at 920 Custer Road but had to wait nearly a year for leasing information to appear. Once it did, he contacted a friend who was the leasing agent. Though surprised by Conry’s interest in the former office building, the agent showed him the space, and Conry signed the lease the next day. “I called and said, ‘Danny, you have my listing.’ He asked which one then said, ‘You want that building?’” Conry said. “There were eight offices in here back and then. He asked, ‘Are you sure you want it?’ I signed the lease the next day.” Red tape entanglement Wielding decades of construction experience, Conry, who signed the lease June 4, 2025, estimated an October opening. Moon Wolf Provisions officially opened April 18. “This was easily a 90-day project and then it was not,” Conry said. He cites bureaucracy as being the cause of most of the delays including a steady stream of inspections. “I didn’t realize you needed all these plans. I was like, ‘Why do I need that? I

and girlfriend, Sarah Ratliff, for being instrumental in getting the project over the finish line. He also credits Taylor Paige Work, the shop’s barista, as being crucial to the business’ success. Work tapped into her industry connections and helped Conry grow from a goat trailer to a much larger space. “She has opened a couple coffee shops,” Conry said. “We wouldn’t be where we are without her.” Throughout the process, Conry was getting a sense that Moon Wolf Provisions was about to fill a void. The soft launch proved him right.
Focused on quality In the short time Moon Wolf Provisions has been open, Conry said he has had a few people approach him saying they would like to invest when and if he decides to open another location. At this point, that is not Conry’s plan. “I want one location that has hyper-quality and is super focused. I’d rather go deeper on one spot than go wider,” Conry said. “I don’t want to involve investors—they might have an opinion. Our quality could go down because the numbers aren’t there for them. I’d rather have hyper-quality.”

“Community anticipation was huge. [So many] people would come by the shop and say, ‘I can’t wait for you to open.’ I was seeing how much people needed it and wanted it,” Conry said. “When we had this soft opening, we didn’t even announce that we were open. It was supposed to be a secret soft launch and we had a line at the door for nine hours.” Drinks, food and tunes The drink menu features cortados, cappuccinos, lattes, teas and matcha. The food menu includes pastries made by Taste and See, a local contract food service provider. Conry is currently looking for additional contractors to round out his food offerings.

In addition to drinks and food, customers will also find carefully curated gift items as well as branded merchandise and a variety of plants. In between chatting with customers and making drinks, Conry and Work make selections from three boxes of eclectic vinyls ranging from 20s jazz to Johnny Cash, to Tame Impala—an indie rock musician. “We have people come in and they’re like, ‘Man, I Shazammed every song on the playlist today,’” Conry said. “And I’m like, man, we love that!”

I love coffee. And a cool coffee shop is the perfect place to meetup with a friend to catch up, or even solo to grab a cup of joe on the go. However, both of these are worth the “sit and stay a while”.

MAHJONG! One of my favorite things to do with gal pals is to play Mahjong. It’s all the rage, and for good reason. It keeps me connected with my friends, off our devices, and our minds sharp. Here are a few places I’d like to try this summer. 1. If you visit @mahj080 on Instagram, you can keep up with their local events this summer. They have free social play on Mondays at Lockwood, as well as ClubMahj with playing locations at Lockwood, Oak Highlands Brewery, and Las Lomas. Special side note: if you have kids interested in learning, they even have a Mahj 080 Summer Camp in July and August.* 2. Check out @vivisrichardson on Instagram to find their upcoming mahjong events and classes. You can learn the game from mahjong instructors as well as join in their open play. If those options don’t work with your schedule, you can always rent the space out to play with friends or host your own event!
CITYLINE NIGHT MARKET AND LIVE MUSIC CityLine Night Market by the Boho Market runs the second Friday of each month from 6-10 pm. Mark your calendars for June 12th, July 10th and August 14th.

3. Take your tiles and your friends to Lockwood Distillery for a game with friends. The square tables fit a Mahj game set up perfectly and you can order food and drinks, and nibble and play simultaneously!

EAT YOUR WAY THROUGH EUROPE Unforgettable Bites Worth Traveling For By Mollie Romness, 2025 Best of Richardson Travel Agent
O
ne of the most meaningful ways to experience Europe is through the foods that reflect each country’s distinct cultures, traditions, and people. These are a few unforgettable bites I’ve enjoyed and would absolutely recommend trying during your travels! Churros con Chocolate, Spain Everyone knows what a churro is, but in Spain they are next-level. Crisp on the outside, soft inside, and served piping hot with thick chocolate or coffee, they’re nothing like the mass produced themepark versions in the US. Madrid’s iconic Chocolatería San Ginés is a great place to try them, but some of my favorites have come from tiny street stalls, where spirals of dough are sliced and fried fresh right in front of you!

Käsespätzle, Germany I like to call this “German Mac & Cheese,” and it’s always a hit with kids, especially picky eaters. The soft, rustic noodles are tossed with melted cheese and topped with buttery or crispy onions. My kids love ordering it at Christmas Markets, where it’s scooped straight from giant sizzling pans, adding to the warm, festive atmosphere that makes the markets feel so magical. Lefse, Norway Lefse to me is like a Norwegian tortilla, but made from potatoes. My in-laws are from Norway, so I have had the pleasure of eating their homemade lefse for years. We love topping it with butter and sugar, then rolling it up and eating it by hand. For many Norwegian families, making lefse at Christmas is as important as the food itself. The rolling, cooking, stacking, and sharing often become family rituals. Bitterballen, Netherlands Bitterballen are one of the most beloved comfort foods in the Netherlands. These crispy, deep-fried croquettes have a savory meat filling inside and are served hot with mustard on the side. They are closely associated with gezelligheid, the Dutch feeling of coziness and social warmth, especially when shared with friends over drinks--which is exactly how I felt when served these by our Dutch friends in their home outside of Amsterdam, where I tasted these for the first time. Strawberries and Chocolate, Borough Market in London This treat recently went viral on social media, and on a recent trip to London my teenage daughter and I had to try them! The experience is theatrical as the bright, juicy strawberries are drenched in warm melted chocolate and served to you in a cup. You can find them at the Borough Market, along with tons of other delicacies. Be prepared for a long line, although it moves quickly! RICHARDSONLIFEMAGAZINE.COM
