The word BEST, by definition, means: that which is the most excellent, outstanding, or desirable.
RICHARDSON: a city in Texas boasting a population of close to 120,000 people, is the city we call home.
BEST OF RICHARDSON: a contest compromised of businesses, organizations, people, events and locations throughout the city that is voted on by readers and members of the community, representing all that makes Richardson the best place to call home.
What’s exciting about the Best of Richardson awards is that being named the Best of Richardson in any category is a prestigious honor. If you followed along this voting journey, you know it’s been a methodical process of gathering all the names of the beloved people, places and businesses around Richardson during the April nomination phase. In this first round, the readers of Richardson Life Magazine showed up with more than 950 nominations in 200+ categories—amazing!
Then, as the contest narrowed, the top three nominees with the most nominations in each category advanced to the finalist voting round in June. That round, you cast more than 50,000 votes to get us to today’s announcement of the winners by category. The moment so many have been waiting for. The BEST of Richardson.
Thank you, Richardson Life Magazine readers, for showing up to support your community. And thank you to all the businesses and individuals for taking part and rallying your supporters. There are so many unbelievable places here to see and experience. I hope you’ll also check out our online directory, which includes not only the winners in each category, but the finalists as well.
We’ll be back next year with another edition of Best of Richardson. If you don’t see one of your favorites listed, you can always nominate them next year to bring them to the winner’s circle.
We believe Richardson is the absolute BEST place to live.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Happy August! If you’ve been a regular reader of Richardson Life Magazine, you’ll notice that this issue looks a little—actually, a lot—different than the usual. Some of our normally featured articles are absent and the calendar of events and Scene section are missing. They’ll be back in future issues. Instead, the pages of this Best of Richardson issue are dedicated to the companies, individuals and organizations you all voted as 2025 stand-outs.
In spite of the temporary changes, you’ll still get to hear from our new mayor, Amir Omar, about his first ninety days in office. And you’ll see how RISD kicked off the school year by celebrating its teachers and offering hands-on training to prepare them for the school year. They truly are the BEST school district, thanks to Superintendent Tabitha Branum’s leadership, her administrative team and all the teachers, counselors, principals, culinary team members, support staff and others who make RISD run. In spite of recent budget cuts, Branum and her team continue to deliver a top-notch education to Richardson’s students.
And although we may not have a calendar in this issue, I’d like to point out a couple of important upcoming events. On August 28 at 7:00 pm, the 15th annual Richardson Real Heroes Awards Celebration, sponsored by the City of Richardson, will take place at the Eisemann Center’s Bank of America Theatre. 2025 award recipients Dr. Mona Alnaeemi and Neil Stampe will be honored for their outstanding volunteer service to the Richardson community, along with the 2025 nominees. The awards ceremony’s special guest will be Texas-based singer/songwriter/speaker Sara Hickman, who will weave song into her talk about the power of giving back. Tickets are free but must be obtained from the Eisemann Center Box Office. Details can be found at the RRH website at richardsonrealheroes.com/awardsceremony.
Additionally, Network is hosting its 28th Annual Golf Outing on Friday, September 12, at Sherrill Park. If you’re a golfer and want to support an amazing cause, sign up today at thenetwork.org/golf. Network continues to meet the needs of our community in large ways and small and needs our support now more than ever. If you’re not a golfer, visit Network’s website to see how your gifts and talents align with their mission.
Aren’t we lucky to live in Richardson? I know I am!

RISD EDUCATORS' CORNER
IN OUR OPINION, THE BEST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN TEXAS
Looking
Forward to an Exciting School Year!
Information provided by Richardson ISD.
In the 2025 Best of Richardson voting, RISD won big! The District can claim three winners, thanks to those who voted in the finals round of the contest. Richardson High School was named Best School, the RHS baseball team was voted Best Local Sports Team, and Karen Fields was chosen as Best Local Educator. Consistently offering a highquality education and stellar programs, RISD deserves to be celebrated not just for its “Best of” winners but for all the ways the District strives to support
its teachers and staff as they work together to deliver a stellar program to Richardson students.
A HEAD START PREPARING FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
While most teachers around the metroplex were enjoying the last weeks of their summer break, more than 1,000 RISD teachers returned “to school” earlier to begin preparations for 2025-2026. In late July, teachers spent two days of their summer
break participating in the district’s Together We Grow professional learning conference, investing their time learning, leading and dreaming big!
The conference offered teachers 200+ sessions from which to choose, including topics such as AVID, SPED (Special Education), Pre-K, Special Student Services and many more. Learning focused on instructional best practices to support the district’s North Star Goal to ensure every student,

A TEXAS-SIZED WELCOME
Richardson ISD welcomed 330 new teachers to the district, some of whom are RISD graduates and/ or returning teachers. New teachers were welcomed at a pep rally as part of RISD’s New Teacher Welcome Week. The pep rally was an experience to remember—complete with a
cheer-off, drill team performances, special guests, inspiring words from Superintendent Tabitha Branum and the District’s 2024-25 Teachers of the Year.
New teachers were surprised with some giveaway items donated by generous RISD partners. In addition, State Farm and Apply materials donated teacher supplies to first-year teachers to get them ready for the new

THEN vs. NOW HOW RICHARDSON REAL ESTATE BECAME THE BEST
When people first moved to Richardson decades ago, it was all about familyfriendly neighborhoods, top-rated schools, and a quieter pace of life just outside the Dallas hustle. As local realtors, we’ve watched the city evolve without losing the qualities that made it special in the first place.
Then: A Suburban
Gem
In the 1970s and ’80s, Richardson was a hidden gem—safe, suburban, and community-oriented. Young families were drawn in by strong RISD schools, affordable homes, and the promise of a quality life. Homes ranged from $40,000 to $80,000, with established neighborhoods like Canyon Creek and Greenwood Hills offering charm and space. The nearby Telecom Corridor made Richardson an ideal spot for professionals working in tech and engineering.
Now: A Connected, Modern Community
Today, Richardson is no longer a secret. It’s a thriving, connected city with the same exceptional schools, plus added amenities and lifestyle perks. Developments like CityLine and the CORE District have brought new restaurants, retail, entertainment, and walkable living. Public transportation has expanded, and the city continues to invest in parks, trails, and infrastructure.
Modern buyers are drawn to a mix of beautifully maintained mid-century homes and new construction options. Median home prices now range from $375,000 to over $550,000 in some neighborhoods and from $750,000 to $1,200,000 and over in others. Most new builds in Richardson start at $1,800,000 and go up from there—proof of strong appreciation and long-term value. Whether it’s first-time buyers, growing families, or downsizing
empty nesters, Richardson real estate offers something for everyone.
What Hasn’t Changed
Despite the growth, the heart of Richardson remains the same. Neighbors still know each other. Schools are still top-tier. Community events, local businesses, and strong city services make it a place people are proud to call home.
Why Kobs & Martin
At Kobs & Martin, we’re more than just realtors—we’re your local guides. With deep roots in Richardson and years of area experience, we help clients navigate where the city has been and where it’s going. Whether you’re buying or selling, we bring the knowledge, strategy, and care you need.
Richardson has grown, but its soul is unchanged—and we get to live in the “Best Of” it.

LEADING RICHARDSON
MAYOR AMIR OMAR’S FIRST NINETY DAYS
Mayor Amir Omar has completed his first 90 days in office. We caught up with him to reflect on the start of his term, his key priorities, challenges and opportunities.
RLM: What has surprised you most during your first three months in office? Surprised? How the weight of the mayor’s role differs from Council service. The pace is faster, visibility higher and the opportunities to make an impact
feel much more immediate. I’ve been encouraged by how many residents are eager to engage—offering ideas, asking thoughtful questions and rooting for the city’s success.
RLM: Have your top priorities changed at all after serving for a few months? My core priorities remain the same— transparent and accessible governance, strong neighborhoods, economic revitalization, and thoughtful
reinvestment in our infrastructure. But now I’ve come to see how interconnected they all are, which has sharpened my focus on collaboration and on looking for opportunities where multiple things can be achieved in a single stroke for an even greater positive impact.
Richardson’s downtown area is a great example of the positive impact such collaboration promises. We’ve leveraged infrastructure work by prior
Mayor Omar meeting with Richardson residents at one of his monthly coffees, this time at Staycation
councils and accelerated progress through dozens of meetings, calls and interactions, many of which have resulted in multiple recommendations of retailers, businesses and restaurants that I am in contact with to help fill spaces. And I’ve recently spoken to a renowned artist within our very own city to begin a conversation about using one of his works as a mural to truly elevate our entry point.
RLM: What’s one small but meaningful win you’ve experienced since taking office?
I am proud that this Council and our excellent city management team were willing to live-stream and record our goal-setting workshop, something that hadn’t happened since I was on the Council in 2011. These goals, strategies and tactics shape much of what our focus will be during our two-year City Council terms and it’s important that our residents are able to watch consequential meetings like this live, or to be able to go back days— or even years—later to see what was discussed and the thinking behind them. Transparency builds trust and this is a step in the right direction.
RLM: What’s been the most challenging part of the job so far?
Managing time and energy. The demand is constant—and I mean,
constant. Every moment is a chance to listen, solve or lead. I’m learning to pace myself—to be fully present for each conversation while keeping the big picture in view.
RLM: What do you see as Richardson’s biggest opportunity?
One of the biggest is how we respond to shifts in the commercial real estate landscape. Proactively reimagining those spaces, supporting innovation, guiding redevelopment that aligns with long-term resident priorities—all of it will improve the outcome. Richardson’s
commercial tax base is a key element in our overall financial health. Leveraging our strengths and recent successes will accelerate momentum and, ultimately, the results will be positive.
RLM: What’s something most people don’t know about you that helps shape how you lead?
I’m naturally very analytical—I like to gather a lot of input before making decisions. Research data, feedback from residents, insights from staff, all of it. I try to look at an issue from every angle, a full 360-degrees. It’s not about overthinking— it’s about making sure decisions are grounded, balanced and built to last. I’ve found the more perspectives we include early on, the better the outcome is for everyone involved.
RLM: What’s one goal you’ve set for yourself since taking office?
To stay accessible and to lead with consistency in words, tone and actions— because in a city of our size, people pay very close attention. I want residents to feel confident that they know where I stand, that I’ll follow through and that I’m working every single day to earn their trust. I’ve been thrilled about the monthly coffees I’ve held and for the upcoming quarterly town hall I’m hosting. The input I gather and the ability to connect with residents, helps me stay aligned with everyone I represent and their vision for the City of Richardson.

At Richardson Life Magazine , we spend a lot of time getting to know the people, places and experiences that define our city. And if there's one thing we've learned, it's this: Richardson is packed with personality. From its locally owned businesses to its thriving arts scene, this city offers more than just a place to live—it offers a
wonderful community spirit. Here are five reasons we love calling Richardson home.
LOCALLY OWNED GEMS: SMALL BUSINESSES WITH BIG HEART
Richardson’s independently owned businesses are the backbone of its character and charm. There’s something
CityLine
special about walking into a locally owned shop where the barista knows your order, the owner chats with you by name, and every detail feels personal. Richardson’s small business community is filled with passion, personality and a whole lot of heart.
Take Bella Flan, for example—a local restaurant known for its authentic Cuban sandwiches, burgers and desserts. La Casita Bakeshop, with its nationally recognized pastries, serves everything from hand-laminated croissants to pillowy beignets and delicious loaves of sourdough bread. You’ll also find local shopping spots like Beyond the Door, Lone Chimney Mercantile, Beaucoup, Get Noticed and Cottonwood Market in various parts of the city. And Del’s Charcoal Burgers, a no-frills staple, has been feeding generations since 1957. These businesses—and many others—help
preserve the authentic, neighborly feel that defines Richardson.
A COMMUNITY RICH IN DIVERSITY
Richardson’s cultural diversity is evident in its neighborhoods, shops, community events and nonprofits. The city’s dining options alone reflect this global influence. You’ll find authentic Ethiopian, Korean, Asian and Indian cuisine—all within blocks of each other. More than 80 languages are spoken in area schools and the city is home to people from every corner of the globe.
Global grocery stores, colorful murals and multicultural celebrations make Richardson feel both vibrant and inclusive. From the City-sponsored annual Culture in the Core event to the Dialogue Institute’s Interfaith Thanksgiving celebrations and the Chinese Lunar New Year Festival, Richardson boasts a variety of
opportunities for residents and visitors to learn more about each other and increase their cultural understanding and embrace.
EDUCATION THAT INSPIRES AT EVERY LEVEL
Education is a cornerstone of life in Richardson. We benefit from access to high-quality public education, with the city served by two highly-respected school districts: Richardson ISD and Plano ISD. These districts are known for strong academics, award-winning fine arts programs and competitive extracurricular opportunities. Students have access to specialized magnet schools, STEM initiatives and language immersion programs that prepare them for a global future.
Beyond K-12, Richardson is also home to The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), a nationally celebrated research
Prairie Creek Park waterfall
institution with a growing arts presence and its technological influence can be felt throughout the city’s innovationdriven economy. Additionally, Dallas College's Richland Campus offers affordable, accessible pathways for workforce training, continuing education and academic advancement.
OUTDOOR SPACES THAT INVITE EXPLORATION AND COMMUNITY GATHERINGS
We love spending time outside in Richardson! Its 1,000+ acres of parks and green spaces, along with more than 40 miles of hike-and-bike trails winding through wooded areas, creeks and neighborhoods, invite all of us to spend more time outdoors. Spring Creek Nature Area and Breckenridge Park are perfect for walking, jogging, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon in nature. And one of the city’s most picturesque spots is Prairie Creek Park, where a hidden waterfall draws families, photographers and nature lovers alike. It’s even recently been discovered by Instagram users, much to the surprise of locals who live near the picturesque park.
Local shopping venues even offer beautiful outdoor gathering spaces. From the quaint II Creeks Shopping Center in the heart of Canyon Creek to CityLine’s center to the newly revitalized downtown Richardson, residents can spend time enjoying
events in these places or simply have a place to stop for a bit while spending an afternoon at local favorites.
TOP-NOTCH CULTURAL OFFERINGS
Richardson boasts a rich cultural scene that continues to grow and diversify. The Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts anchors the city’s arts programming, hosting national touring acts, orchestras, dance troupes and speakers throughout the year.
Community events such as the Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival and Cottonwood Art Festival draw thousands from around the region, showcasing local talent, international artistry, live music and gourmet food. Smaller venues and galleries throughout the city support emerging
artists and provide opportunities for residents to engage with theater, live music and visual arts in accessible and intimate settings. On a larger scale, UTD’s Crow Museum of Asian Art offers an outstanding opportunity to engage with world-class artistic treasures. Richardson’s arts scene is vibrant, accessible and always evolving.
MORE THAN A CITY—A PLACE FOR DISCOVERY
These five favorites spotlight what we love best about Richardson, but it’s a city that continues to surprise us—in the best way. It’s a place where creativity meets community and neighbors become friends. Whether you're a lifelong resident or a recent arrival, there’s always something new to discover—and plenty of reasons to love calling Richardson home.

BEST OF RICHARDSON 2025
Voted on By the People, For the
Community
The Best of Richardson readers choice awards was created to recognize the standout businesses, services, and individuals that make life in our city better. But what sets this contest apart is how authentic and organic it truly is. This isn’t a popularity contest driven by our staff; it’s a celebration powered by you, the people who take pride in the place you call home.
When the team here at Richardson Life Magazine started discussing the idea of creating a Best of Richardson contest early last year, it was quickly decided that it should be an award voted on by the readers. That is when an independent third party was contracted to ensure fairness and transparency with the voting process. Strict voting rules were put in place to prevent duplicate entries or ballot-stuffing, and results were carefully reviewed to maintain the integrity of the contest. Whether you voted once or rallied your community to support your favorites, you were part of something real! It’s a local lovefest for the best of the best.
What’s even more exciting is that these winners aren’t just logos or storefronts. They’re your neighbors, your friends, your kid’s coach, or that one barista who remembers your latte order. They’re part of the everyday fabric of Richardson. These
are people who pour their hearts into what they do, not just for profit, but for pride in their craft and in their community.
This year, more than 50,000 votes were cast for the Best of Richardson. The enthusiasm was electric and the wide range of categories showed just how diverse and vibrant our city really is. And while the recognition is great, the real reward is knowing that the community sees you, appreciates you, and wants to say, “Thank you.”
The profiles on the following pages spotlight the winners across all categories. You’ll find winners from the small, familyrun businesses that have been staples for decades, to the rising stars and the new favorites. As you glance through the profiles, you’ll see why they were nominated, how they stand out, and why Richardson is better because they’re part of it.
We hope you’ll take the time to not only read their stories, but to visit them, support them, and tell them thanks. These winners earned the BEST of Richardson award through community trust, hard work, heart…and your votes!
So from all of us at Richardson Life, congratulations to the winners. And to everyone who voted, thank you for making Best of Richardson a genuine reflection of who we are as a city. The best city around.

FOUR BULLETS BREWERY
A Dream Brewed into Reality
What began as a backyard hobby in the early 2000s, has now become a Richardson staple. Four Bullets Brewery started as a dream shared by founders, Jeff Douglas and Drew Smeeton—two brewing enthusiasts, and cigar connoisseurs with a passion for craft beer. Their first creation, a bold brown ale designed to pair perfectly with a fine cigar, became what is now one of Four Bullets' flagship beers— Black Jack Brown, still on tap and still a crowd favorite.
In May 2015, Four Bullets officially opened as Richardson’s OG brewery with four beers on tap. Over a decade
later, they now offer 12 core beers daily, with inventive small-batch brews released monthly. While rooted in English-style brewing, the tap list has expanded to a wide variety of styles and flavors to suit every palate.
The taproom has a speakeasy, funky, neighborhood pub vibe. It’s where strangers become friends and regulars are like family. The shaded, spacious patio is a popular hangout for enjoying live music while waving at the train with a pint in hand. Speaking of music— every Friday, Saturday and Sunday the brewery becomes a stage for local bands, acoustic sets and even a monthly drum circle. Whether you’re on the patio or inside there’s always good music and cold beer.
Guests can grab a bite to eat from their rotating lineup of food trucks like Fish &
Fizz, Cousins Maine Lobster. Four Bullets is also a top pick for private events, from corporate happy hours, weddings and baby showers to birthdays and celebrations of life, thanks to its laidback charm and welcoming staff.
Four Bullets isn’t just about beerit’s about community. From donating beer and merch to local fundraisers to supporting schools, churches and non-profits, they have built more than brewery – they have built a hub for community, connection, celebration and giving back.
After 10 years of pouring passion into every pint, Four Bullets continues to brew with the same passion they started with.
Cheers to community.
Cheers to live music.
Cheers to Four Bullets Brewery.
BEST COMMUNITY ACTIVIST
REV. CATHY SWEENY
One of the treasures of Richardson is the diversity and depth of its faith communities. Nestled at the corner of Arapaho and Coit, Arapaho United Methodist Church may appear from the street to be a quiet neighborhood church. This church is anything but quiet. Its bold, ever-changing marquee speaks to the heart of the city with messages of welcome, justice and hope. Its people show up, consistently, for those on the margins. And at the center of much of this movement is an Associate Pastor, Rev. Cathy Sweeney. Rev. Sweeney’s influence in Richardson extends far beyond the Arapaho UMC building. Her work embodies a deep commitment to the idea that faith should not remain behind closed doors but should be lived out in public, practical and prophetic ways. Rev. Sweeney first came to Richardson in 1995, with husband Steve and two (now adult) children. They found a church home at Arapaho UMC the next year. Cathy quickly realized that this congregation, anchored in compassion
and community involvement, was where her own call to ministry would stir. In 2009, she followed that call to Perkins School of Theology at SMU, where she received the prestigious Kaufman Award for Social Ethics. After graduating in 2015, she later was ordained as a Deacon in the United Methodist Church.
“Deacons are uniquely called to bridge the church with the world,” Sweeney says. “We stand in the doorway, translating the needs of the community to the church and helping the church show up where it’s needed most. Arapaho is where I first heard that call and it’s where I get to live it out every day.”
After a career in commercial real estate and serving in nonprofit leadership roles throughout the Dallas area, Rev. Sweeney “came home” to Arapaho UMC in 2019 as Associate Pastor. Since then, she’s helped shepherd the church into new expressions of community partnership, public theology and meaningful action.
"Pastor Cathy embodies the heart of our Methodist calling: to follow Jesus and work to transform the world,” Arapaho UMC Senior Pastor Rev.
Jonathan Perry reflects . “Her ministry reminds us that following Jesus isn't just about good news shared from the pulpit, but good news lived out in the streets, schools and systems of our city. Through her leadership, we're not just talking about loving our neighbors: we're actively becoming the kind of neighbors God calls us to be."
Arapaho UMC has a reputation for helping birth and nurture transformative ministries in the city, including cofounding the Network of Community Ministries and planting the Synergy Wesley Foundation at UT Dallas.
The church continues to deepen its commitment to justice and compassion by walking alongside refugee families, organizing legislative awareness events, supporting RISD schools and launching community-based initiatives like All Moms and Live Like Luke of Texas. Whether through advocacy, organizing, or pastoral presence, Rev. Cathy Sweeney is a voice of integrity and compassion in Richardson. Her leadership reflects the best of what the church can be - a force for good, a partner in justice and a home for the hopeful.

SHADY’S BURGERS & BREWHAHA
In 2013, five guys rooted in the Richardson, Texas, neighborhood of Canyon Creek, came together one evening in support of a single cause; give family, friends, and neighbors a unique place to hang out and share some tasty burgers and beer – a real neighborhood joint.
The original plan was simple; offer great food at a reasonable price in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. We’ve caused a bit of a brewhaha since then with our one-ofa-kind burgers, but the mission has always stayed the same. So, whether it’s your first time here, or you’re someone we like to call neighbor, it’s with pride that we welcome you to Shady’s
From the local beer on tap, to our from scratch kitchen, Shady’s was built out of a growing desire to serve the community. A local spot, created for you and yours to enjoy great food without all the fuss. We hope you like it!
Winning Best Fine Dining, Romantic Restaurant, and Upscale Bar is no surprise—it’s where style, flavor, and community meet. Feed your need for fresh. Feed your soul. Only at The Fifth.
