Special Exhibit Opening this Fall

Commemorating 250 Years as a Nation: New exhibit brings America’s most transformative moments to life.

From the Chairman

In a world that feels more unstable than at any time since World War II, the call for peace has never been greater. More than fifty years after Richard Nixon’s presidency, the peacemaking ethos that guided him remains a cornerstone for building peace through strength and strategic diplomacy. This theme was central to this year’s Grand Strategy Summit, which highlighted how President Nixon’s foreign policy approach connects to the achievements of the current administration. Amid heightened global tensions, the summit underscored the importance of implementing a grand strategy in policymaking to foster a more peaceful world.

This October, the Richard Nixon Foundation made history by awarding the Architect of Peace Award for the first time to a sitting president in an Oval Office ceremony. President Trump’s foreign policy achievements, including a historic number of ceasefires and peace agreements, demonstrated the tangible results that can come from leadership that seeks peace.

As the year comes to a close, the Foundation invites supporters to contribute to the American Civics Campaign, a two-year initiative nearing completion that aims to establish the Nixon Library as a national leader in civics education. Your gift will help us cross the finish line and ensure that students and visitors of all ages have access to hands-on programs, interactive exhibits, and educational resources that teach the principles of American government, history, and civic responsibility. Supporting civics education is vital because an informed and engaged citizenry is the foundation of a thriving democracy. By contributing, you are helping the Nixon Library prepare the next generation of leaders to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of participating in the democratic process.

To experience civics education in action, I encourage you to visit the special exhibition, America 250: A More Perfect Union, open throughout 2026 in celebration of America’s 250th birthday. The exhibit offers a compelling journey through 250 years of American history, showing that the nation’s success has never been guaranteed and that preserving it requires both active engagement and thoughtful leadership.

With the continued support of its community, the Nixon Library will remain a place that inspires future generations and deepens the understanding of American civics.

Very truly yours,

Inspired by President Nixon’s legacy as a peacemaker and strategist, the conference emphasized strong leadership, innovative diplomacy, and forward-looking strategy as keys to securing “peace for generations to come.”

The program opened with Ambassador Robert C. O’Brien, who announced that the Nixon Foundation’s Architect of Peace Award had been presented earlier that day to President Donald J. Trump—the first sitting president to receive the honor.

The opening program featured a discussion between Senator Dave McCormick and Ambassador O’Brien on current foreign policy initiatives, followed by Congressman Darrell Issa and journalist Matthew Foldi, who explored lessons from President Nixon on achieving “Peace with Honor” and advancing American strength abroad. They concluded that thoughtful, coordinated U.S. leadership is vital to navigating global conflicts and ensuring security at home and abroad.

Closing the conference with remarks titled From the Age of Nixon to the Challenge of Now, Secretary Wilkie reflected on the defining question of our time: whether the West has the will to survive. While warning of the dangers of ignoring history, he observed that “indifference to history isn’t just ignorance; it is rude,” and pointed to efforts by leaders such as Xi and Putin to rewrite the past to serve their agendas. Wilkie concluded by emphasizing that, in confronting today’s global challenges, President Nixon’s leadership offers enduring lessons for navigating a complex and uncertain world.

Generous $1 Million Gift to the American Civics Campaign Expands the Nixon Library's Efforts to Inspire Civic Dialogue and Engagement

The Richard Nixon Foundation is proud to announce a transformative $1 million gift from Shaun and Leland Smith in support of the American Civics Campaign, the Foundation’s national initiative dedicated to strengthening civics education and preparing the next generation of informed and engaged citizens.

The announcement was made during a special event at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum on October 19, featuring guest speaker Eric Trump and moderated by Christopher Nixon Cox, grandson of President and Mrs. Nixon and Nixon Foundation Board member.

This landmark contribution establishes the Shaun and Leland Smith Distinguished Speakers Series — a dynamic forum that will bring leading voices in public policy, history, media, and culture to the Nixon Library.

The series will host thought-provoking programs designed to inspire civic dialogue, deepen public understanding of American democracy, and encourage active citizenship.

‘‘ For more than three decades, Shaun and Leland Smith have been valued members of the Nixon Library community, even attending events with President Nixon. Their extraordinary generosity will ensure that the Nixon Library continues to serve as a national stage for discussions, debate, and the exchange of ideas that shape our country.”

— Joe Lopez, Acting President and CEO, Richard Nixon Foundation

Shaun and Leland Smith’s commitment to faith, family, and country has long guided their civic work. Founders of Service Champions, the Smiths have been friends of the Nixon Library since its earliest days. Their generous contribution to the American Civics Campaign reflects a deep belief in preserving history and inspiring future generations to serve and lead.

Since its opening in 1990, the Nixon Library has welcomed thousands of distinguished speakers, from political leaders and policymakers to journalists to historians, whose presentations and discussions have advanced public understanding and fostered civil discourse. The Smiths’ enduring commitment to the Foundation and its mission makes them a vital part of this legacy.

Business Honors Students Serve as Student Delegates to

the Grand Strategy Summit, Gaining Firsthand Insight in the Nation’s Capital

A cohort of business honors students from California State University, Fullerton traveled to Washington, D.C. to witness American government and history in action. This immersive experience is an annual component of the Grand Strategy Summit, that provides hands-on civics education and exposure to national policy discussions.

In addition to attending the Summit, the student delegates toured key institutions and historic sites, including the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. Supreme Court, the American Revolution Institute, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and the Woodrow Wilson House.

Honors Civics Course Prepares Students for a Life of Civic Engagement

Yorba Linda High School students are taking civics beyond the classroom through a new Honors Civics course in partnership with the Richard Nixon Foundation. Each week, they explore primary sources and archival materials and apply their learning to real-world projects that address community issues.

By blending history, research, and civic action, the program empowers students to become informed, engaged citizens making a difference today. This one-of-a-kind partnership offers students a unique opportunity to be immersed in the past while inspiring civic engagement for the future.

Students Gain Impactful Experience Through Summer Internships

This summer, high school and college students brought new energy and ideas to the Nixon Foundation, gaining hands-on experience across departments. From education and exhibits to marketing and programming, interns got a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a presidential library and museum.

Where Learning Meets Action

The Foundation’s high school interns participated through a partnership with the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, including two students from El Dorado High School who shared their reflections:

‘‘I found out about this internship through my school’s career counselor, and I’m glad I did. I got to do real, meaningful work as part of the Education Department—particularly helping to develop a marketing campaign for an upcoming civics competition. I was part of a real workplace environment, collaborating with others and problem-solving together. To anyone interested in civics, history, social media, finance, or business, the Nixon Foundation internship is a great opportunity.”

‘‘The internship taught me how to work with others—especially how to take initiative and communicate with department heads to complete projects. Chris Barber, my supervisor, gave us space to grow and take ownership of our work, but it was up to me to reach out, learn, and go deeper than just doing tasks.

‘‘Any student should consider interning at the Nixon Foundation because there are so many opportunities and pathways—from finance and marketing to event planning and history. My social media and marketing skills were put to the test, as were my research and writing skills. It’s not a one-dimensional program; there’s something for every type of student to explore and excel in.”

Future

The strength of our democracy depends on raising a generation that knows our history, cherishes our Constitution, and participates in civic life with integrity and purpose. That is why the Richard Nixon Foundation launched the American Civics Campaign—a bold $45 million initiative to build a national model for civics education. Our mission is urgent: to prepare young Americans with the knowledge and character needed to preserve our democracy and strengthen the fabric of our nation.

The programs highlighted in this magazine are not just programs, they are investments in America’s future. With your support, our efforts will expand nationwide, preparing tens of thousands of young Americans to understand their rights, embrace their responsibilities, and rise to the challenges of citizenship.

We ask for your partnership in this vital mission. Every dollar given today strengthens the foundation of America’s future.

Allies in a Changing World: Historic Symposium Applies the Lessons of Nixon, Pompidou, and the Power of Partnership

On October 1, 2025, the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., hosted the first-ever symposium jointly sponsored by two organizations dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacies of an American and a French president: the Richard Nixon Foundation and the Institut Georges Pompidou.

Traveling to Washington from across the United States and Europe, more than two dozen distinguished current and former government officials, diplomats, scholars, journalists, and archivists participated in this unique event. They analyzed, discussed, and in some cases personally recalled key aspects of the Nixon–Pompidou era and the legacy of both presidents, applying those lessons to the present day.

The evening before the symposium, attendees gathered for a reception in the Rotunda of the National Archives. Surrounded by America’s founding documents, guests had the opportunity to meet one another and view, for the first time in its entirety, the Constitution of the United States—from the Preamble to the 27th Amendment.

The next day in the French Embassy’s auditorium, the Honorable Laurent Bill, Ambassador of France to the United States, opened the day-long event with welcoming remarks. The historic nature of the symposium was reflected in the Ambassador’s hosting it at the Embassy.

Following an introductory video highlighting the relationship between Presidents Richard Nixon and Georges Pompidou, who both served from 1969 to 1974, the panel presentations began.

President Georges Pompidou and President Richard Nixon attending a meeting on the Portuguese island, The Azores, December 13-14, 1971.
Ambassador Monica Crowley, Chief of Protocol of the United States, delivering keynote remarks.

The first panel, “Nixon, Pompidou, and the Cold War,” examined how President Nixon’s policy of détente with the Soviet Union affected the dynamics of the Cold War, particularly between the United States and its major European allies.

The second panel, “Nixon and Pompidou Administrations Face New Economic and Monetary Issues,” explored the economic and monetary realities of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Panelists reflected on the challenges, changes, and opportunities experienced in the economies of the United States and Europe during this period.

The third panel, “The United States, France, and the EEC, 1969–1974: Opportunities and Challenges,” analyzed how European integration reshaped the relationship between France and the United States.

Ambassador Monica Crowley, Chief of Protocol of the United States, delivered the keynote address. She warmly recalled working as former President Nixon’s foreign policy assistant from 1990 to 1994 and shared how lessons from that experience continue to guide her in her current highprofile leadership role.

The day’s fourth panel, “Superpower and Middle Power with New Governance and New Actors: Nixon and Pompidou Foreign Policies,” delved into President Nixon’s vision for America’s post-Vietnam foreign policy and President Pompidou’s determination to preserve France’s international standing.

The final panel, “Nixon and Pompidou Archives Exploration: Regulation Models and Comparison with the EU,” reviewed the scope and accessibility of the collections at the Nixon, Pompidou, and European Union archives.

Earlier in the day, one of the panelists offered an observation that could sum up the event: the effective way in which the Nixon White House was organized to conduct American foreign policy would make for a “master class” for graduate students in international affairs. Studying effective leaders of the past can help guide the world toward a better future.

By examining how Nixon and Pompidou forged common ground in a time of global change, we gain insights into how principled leadership and strategic alliances can help nations navigate today’s challenges. As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, this symposium underscores the deep and enduring diplomatic relationship between the U.S. and France— one that dates back to America’s founding.

On June 21, 2025, the Nixon Library parking lot buzzed with energy as runners, walkers, and vendors gathered for the annual Nixon 5K for Title IX. From toddlers in the kids’ run to a spirited team from title sponsor UCI Health, from dog walkers to high school track stars, participants of all ages came together to celebrate the enduring impact of Title IX.

When President Nixon signed the Education Amendments Act of 1972—which included Title IX—few could have predicted how those 37 words would revolutionize opportunities for women in sports and education.

Launched in 2022 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the Nixon Title IX 5K has become a growing, family-friendly community tradition—now in its fourth year and stronger than ever.

Experts and Front-Line Leaders Apply President Nixon’s Drug Strategy to Modern Challenges

On September 18, the Richard Nixon Foundation hosted a luncheon symposium, Policy with Purpose: President Nixon’s Drug Strategy in a 21st Century Context, Facts From the Front Lines and Treatment Triumphs. The program explored how President Nixon’s effective drug policy provides a roadmap for addressing today’s crisis.

The symposium opened with a panel of three nationally recognized experts in drug and alcohol addiction and human trafficking, representing more than 150 years of combined experience. Moderator Maureen Nunn explained the panel’s goal: “to provide solutions and offer lifesaving hope.” Panelists offered candid insights, practical advice for supporting loved ones struggling with addiction, and ways to strengthen organizations fighting human trafficking.

Bill Woodbury – Author and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor with nearly four decades of experience in the field of Substance Abuse Disorder.

James Morrow – Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor, whose international work with the Children of the Night Organization helped the group rescue more than 17,000 children from child prostitution and human trafficking since 1979.

Ed Storti – Author, international intervention specialist and developer of The Storti Model of Intervention.

Maureen Nunn (moderator)- Author and Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor, former host of a nationally syndicated television show, and member of the Richard Nixon Foundation Board of Directors.

The keynote address was delivered by Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes, who emphasized the enduring relevance of President Nixon’s supply and demand approach to drug control.

Reflecting on Nixon’s foresight, Sheriff Barnes remarked, ‘‘ He’s very innovative and almost omniscient in how we have seen this progression over time.”

Barnes also dispelled the myth that President Nixon launched a “war on drugs,” clarifying that Nixon never used the phrase and that the term itself is misleading. “Enforcing the nation’s laws against drugs, drug trafficking, and other issues is not a war—it is a strategy to address, curb, and mitigate the risks of narcotics,” Barnes explained. He went on to describe how his department is applying Nixon’s strategy to today’s fentanyl-driven epidemic, emphasizing that both enforcement and prevention remain essential components.

This symposium built upon the Nixon Foundation’s 2023 conference, A Nation of Narcotics: Drug Control Policies from Nixon’s DEA to the Fentanyl Crisis, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the DEA.

Cheney later became the youngest White House Chief of Staff, served as a Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and then Vice President of the United States (2001-2009).

Over the years, Vice President Cheney made numerous appearances at the Nixon Library. These visits included book talks on his memoirs, supporting his wife Lynne’s book on James Madison, and appearing alongside his daughter Liz to discuss books they co-authored and engage audiences in public policy dialogue.

When describing his experience working for President Nixon at a talk on his book Heart in 2013, Cheney reflected, “It started me in my career, especially in the executive branch, and those were experiences that stood me in good stead throughout my life.”
