Biography

Richard May’s early years were spent in the borough of Ringwood in Northern New Jersey. His character and worldview have been largely influenced by an amalgamation of the tenets of Unitarian Universalism, the Boy Scouts of America, the architectural pedagogy of Carnegie Mellon University, and his friends and family. These are summarized by the U.U. belief in the inherent worth and dignity of every person, the necessity of making ethical and moral decisions in one’s actions, the importance and benefit of rigor in pursuing one’s passions as well as mundane tasks, and the responsibility to enlighten those around him through mentoring, and example. Richard lives by his principles.

Graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in 2015 with a B.Arch., Richard spent a summer in Cleveland interning at NASA, a dream of his, before being drawn back to the excitement and opportunity promised by New York City. There he began his career at the infrastructure firm HNTB where he continues to work, designing and managing projects in the transportation sector with the goal of improving the lives of the people of New York. Here, Richard has developed his architectural, collaborative, mentorship, leadership, and planning skills as well as attaining his Architectural License in December of 2018. With this milestone accomplished, Richard sought more opportunities to grow and expand his abilities so that he can one day contribute to helping solve humanities toughest challenges. For the last two years Richard has worked in-house as an extension of staff with the Port Authority of New York And New Jersey’s Aviation Planning Division. Here he has expanded the breadth of his industry knowledge and experience to passenger demand models and forecasting as well as the landside, terminal and airside function, regulations, and additional design considerations.

Additionally, Richard participates in the ACE mentorship program and is going onto his third year as the team leader. He was also accepted into the AIANY’s Civic Leadership Programs 2019 Class, served as advisor for the 2020 class, and continues the task force of program alumni. Richard has a passion for the environment, both enjoying it and preserving it. He is an avid cyclist, stargazer, camper, and vegan.

During his summers at Carnegie Mellon University Richard sought out opportunities that would not only develop skills as an Architect but also benefit the public at large. In the summer of 2014 he served as a summer fellow for the Non-Profit, Coalition for Queens. There he used GIS to create maps that visualized demographic data of Long Island City’s internet access. Richard aided in development of documents presented to the Queens Borough President’s Office providing a strategy to establish Queens as a major opportunity in the New York City Tech Boom. The next summer, at NASA, he worked as an architectural intern who aided in the development of the Master Plan of the NASA Campus. He created tools for visualizing the schedules of concurrent projects. There he interviewed multiple lead scientists to asses what requirements they needed in future facilities to enable NASA to meet its projected future missions.

Richard is driven to develop the next generation of professionals as he develops himself. He has been an active ACE (Architecture, Construction & Engineering) mentor for six years and the Team Leader of Team 27 for the last three years. He also has been to several New York City high schools to speak about careers in Architecture and Engineering. These include Channel View School for Research in Queens and La Salle Academy in Manhattan. Additionally, he gave a presentation to a college level Graduate Class on Alternative Project Delivery methods at NYU. Rich also was a founding member of HNTB’s S.P.A.N. , Sparking People Activities and Networking.

He oversees and participates on the Professional Development and Community Service Subcommittees. The former focusing on training and empowering HNTB employees to seek their accreditations and the latter focusing on giving back to the NYC community through clothes drives, operation backpack and NYC Cares Day.

The first iteration focused on a narrow mouth and a much wider tail.

This results in very quick acceleration at the mouth and a jet that fans out once it leaves the chamber and rejoins the wind flow. The flaring tail as can be seen does not aid the stream aside from acting as a wind break for the side streams. It results in a rather short stream and as a large wind break further down stream.

Essentially a test of the higher resolution settings of the program.

We were worried that the program did not calculate flow through small perforations. It does but on a high setting and a small scale if you want to see an animation rather than frame by frame. The tiny nature of the perforations do create some shortlived highly accelerated streams.

This test looks at the panels starting open, changing to closed halfway and returned to closed near the end. The peak in this test happens much closer to the start and tapers out quite quickly. The end results in reduced speeds and a much larger wind break to the wideness of the opened panels.

This studio focused on reducing the delay between physical and digital model making as well as strengthening the design by observing and then circumnavigating the negatives of either method. This was executed by using parametric software and connecting it in real time to physical models. The physical models had sensors and actuators establishing a feed back loop. In this manner, a light sensor or pressure sensor being activated on our prototype could affect our 3d model.

Our specific project focused on utilizing the Bernoulli’s Principle to accelerate natural occurring wind and inducing air flow through a structure by means of the relative negative pressure of the accelerated air. The prototype had a pressure sensor. The amount of wind pressure affecting the sensor opened a corresponding panel. This system was extrapolated in the 3d model into an entire wall with panels opening up. Not only would this passively cool the pavilion but it also created stunning lighting and interactive elements.

New Use New Context In 2001 the TWA terminal ended operations and in 2008 Terminal 5 was constructed directly behind the terminal eliminating the original spacious views of the tarmac from the rear glazing.

This project seeks to restore the architectural beauty and coherence and re-imagines the TWA building as a 300 room hotel.

Through an analysis of the existing spaces within the original building and the Roche, additions most of this program allocates space to features other than rooms, such as restaurants, back of house and special services. These can be placed in the original structure with little modification. An emphasis on preserving the original Saarinen building is given priority over the Roche addition preservation.

The rooms are located behind the terminal in an arc giving respect to and providing as much room as possible to the TWA terminal.

The rooms tier away from building and begin to cantilever over the street. Arches support the rooms and extend over the street.

The newly constructed masses are broken up into three blocks dividing the bridges from TWA. As they progress north they gain in height but never get higher than the shells of TWA. The arc and the height differentiation mitigate the visual blockage of Terminal 5. The arc allows for optimal solar gain given the sites constraints.

The higher mass in the north alleviates heat loss of TWA from the predominantly northern winds in the winter, while the lower mass in the south allows summer winds maximal surface area contact.

The form of the newly built structure is inspired from details of TWA which were re-imagined and interpreted into new, modern forms.

The South Bank entertainment district in London is home to a collection of architectural styles from throughout the years. The publics love-hate relationship of the brutalist’ Queen Elizabeth Hall has led to indecision as whether to tear it down or restore it. This studio, focusing on theatre architecture, proposed a new wing and theatre to be added to the South Bank Complex. The complex includes the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the brutalist Hayward Art Gallery and the International Style’s Royal Festival Hall. The site was particularly challenging due to various slopes and level changes, a lack of open space and the fact that many of the buildings are historical landmarks and could not be demolished. My scheme focuses on plugging into the back of house spaces of the Queen Elizabeth and Hayward in an aim to improve the existing facilities and add new facilities that will tie into the new wing’s back of house. Another feature of this design was to create a major entrance along the Waterloo Bridge. To illustrate the rearrangement of the site levels of this intervention and to describe the relationship of the three theaters in this scheme a 1:100 scale sectional model was built. Extensive research into theatre design and of the site itself was conducted, culminating in a site visit to London, where we discussed our projects with the owners and current Master Planners of the South Bank Arts Complex.

In collaboration with the Hazelwood Community of Pittsburgh, this project sought to provide home improvements for low income families in the community. Faced with a tight budget and a variety of housing typologies, we worked with the Center of Life to create a plan that would meet their budget, aesthetic desires and creating the best improvements for the home owners and community. The project culminated in the production of four booklets covering precedent studies, typological analysis, a drawing set with annotations and a specification sheet and cost analysis.

Our project focused on being Safe, Sustainable and Sensible. The proposal sought to reduce energy costs by increasing the R-value of the wall assembly allowing the home owner to spend less on energy. Part of the savings would go towards a multiple year payback plan allowing the home owner to benefit from the project immediately. Our wall assembly included the addition of foam board insulation and fiber cement siding.

T his is a design for an Ecolog y Lab in Frick Park, Pittsburgh along the banks of the Monongahela R ive r. S e ve r a l o b s t a c l e s h a d t o b e ove r c o m e, l i ke the railroad tracks that created an elongated site, an existing bike path that crossed through and a steep drop that prevented easy access to the wa t e r. T h e d e s i g n o b j e c t ive s o u g h t t o a l l e v i a t e these issues by providing easy access to the river and emphasizing the amount of engineering perfor med on the landscape.

Also being allowed to design aspects of the centers usage, the Lab became both a place of s t u d y a n d l e a r n i n g. T h e d e s i g n c o n s i d e r e d r o o f g ardens, constr ucted wetlands, rain g ardens and r unoff/rain water collection systems to both treat polluted water and to teach visitors about t h e s e p r o c e s s e s . channeled the water into the interior core. Its center contained a basin of the complexes’ c l e a n e d wa t e r.

The radial landscaping began to respond to the moves being generated by the architecture seeking to draw users of the space back to center and to seek out another area of the site. The site planning included spaces for boat docking, community g ardens, secluded rest areas and lab a c c e s s p o i n t s.

This is a design of a collaborative dance and arts center that seeks to capture the artistic energy of B o s t o n ’s h i s t o r i c T h e a t e r D i s t r i c t . T h e p r o j e c t ’s mission was to create a central nexus space that directed and funneled people, circulation and functionality to spark collaborations among the various art for ms conducted here.

A d d i t i o n a l l y, I s o u g h t t o i n c o r p o r a t e t h e s t r u c t u r e into the neighborhood by creating an outdoor plaza b y p u l l i n g t h e b u i l d i n g ’s f o o t p r i n t b a c k f r o m t h e street while maintaining visual connections between different program areas of the complex.

A rthur & Y vonne B oyd E ducation C enter + P adre P io P ilgrim C hurch Two Case Studies were conducted on projects which focused on the architectural detail. The first project is one of Glenn Murcutt’s designs. The education center is beautifully integrated with in the landscape. I was both fascinated with bedroom’s fins and the changes in the roof along the length of the building. Eventually I began to explore the flitched beams and their relationship to the roof construction. The culmination of researching Murcutt’s drawing sets was to create and exploded axon of the detail and its integration in to the rest of its design.

The second case study was of Renzo Piano’s Padre Pio Pilgrim Church. With this project I set my eyes on the most stunning feature of the interior; the arches with the prop supports that hold up the roof structure.

However the Vltava floods frequently and the design has to be unassembled and reconfigured for a different purpose in the off season. The studio was heavily influenced by parametric algorithms and the sculpting software Maya.

This design sought to capture the naturally occurring erosion and deposition patterns occurring in the river and influencing them to make new land at an accelerated pace. This land building also was designed to reduce the damage done by flooding and possibly block some of the water.

S h e lt e r D e s i g n As an exercise in on-site constr uction, we d e s i g n e d a n d b u i l t a s h e l t e r f o r C M U ’s i c o n i c “ Fe n c e ” . O u r d e s i g n u s e d a s y s t e m b a s e d o n the friction-joined Da Vinci Bridge that was designed 500 years ago by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Affectionately named the “Clam”, our project had two hinged elements allowing for a movable canopy to cover the shelter and a ramp to descent f o r a c c e s s . A e s t h e t i c a l l y, t h e d e s i g n h a d s h a r p ninety degree edges on all the constituent 2 x 4 lumber; this was achieved by ripping and p l a n n i n g i n wo o d s h o p. eagle Scout pRoject A Boat Rack for the Skyline Lakes Community

Richard led a band of troop members in the construction of a boat rack that is installed next to the club house at Skyline Lakes. Previously, canoes and row boats used on the lake were scattered about and some filled with water attracting vermin and insects. Rich drew detailed plans for an improvement, coordinated approvals, prepared construction, and recruited troop members. In addition, he solicited local businesses for donations. Using lumber that was donated by 84 Lumber in Oakland, the boys constructed a nine-bay, three level boat rack. Skyline Pizza provided discounted pies for lunch.

Rich’s entire student life was in Ringwood schools from kindergarten at Peter Cooper Elementary School to Eleanor G. Hewitt Intermediate School, and graduation from Martin J. Ryerson Middle School. He was a National Honor Society, a four-year band saxophonist, robotics club member, tennis player and a 2010 graduate of Lakeland Regional High School. He went on to attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh to study architecture.
