A few things jump to mind as I consider this year’s fest. The big one is-obviously- that we have decided to make every single film screening FREE of charge this year. This was a big decision for us as we wanted to really try, in our 5th year, to get as many people as possible to attend these incredible films. Each year we grow, but we are really hoping that this year we will be introducing the festival to a larger audience of people who were just a bit unsure as to what this crazy thing is all about. By offering free screenings, we know that audiences will really have the chance to experiment, access, and engage with attending the festival.

The other big festival news is that the legendary actress Patty Duke has decided to join us this year. We are pleased and honored to host such an icon at our humble fest. I’m sure it helped that actor Mackenzie Astin…Patty’s son…attended last year’s festival and had such a great time. Mack said to me at the end of the 2013 fest, ‘…I wonder if my Mom might like to come next year…’ I said, ‘Yes, please!’ Tremendous thanks to Mack. He’ll be back again this year as well playing the lead role as Juror of our Maximus Lepus Award. We’d be remiss if we didn’t thank all the great organizations who helped us make this thing happen every year. Visit Duluth…what can we say. You have been there for us since the beginning and are still our hero. Same shout out goes to The Sheraton Hotel who stepped up extra big at a very critical moment for the festival’s future. We cannot thank The Sheraton enough. Lots of sponsors came back on board again this year. Thanks to Kernz and Kompany, KDAL, KDLH, Zeitgeist Arts, Clyde Iron, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council and Lake Superior Brewing for their continued support. We’ve got some new friends as well with The Edgewater Hotel, Beacon Pointe Hotel, Glensheen Historic Estate, Whole Foods Coop, Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank and Human Development Center. We cannot do this without you. As for our film selections this year, you’re going to find great stuff all around. As always we try to mix it up with great films from the festival circuit, outstanding regional and local films, music videos and shorts, international hits, and even a little late night naughtiness. We’ll open up the festival on a tall ship at Clyde Iron Event Center and close it down with a blast from our movie making past at Glensheen, with tons of great stuff in between. Don’t forget that we’re bringing some superlatively talented filmmakers to chat with you about their films as well. Many, many filmmakers present! I need to thank our outstanding staff for their tireless efforts, as we got to keep just about everyone from the 2013 gig. Riki, Letisha, Brittany, Mark…drinks are on me. And to Johnathon who delivered this incredible list of films to us…Duluth will sorely miss you…Best. Lineup.Ever. I think that’s just about enough of my ramblings…why don’t we just start showing you some great free films. Thanks to everyone who comes out and have a great festival! Founder and Director Richard Hansen

OPENING NIGHT film Expedition To the End Of The World

If you would like to come meet, mingle, get an autograph or photo with this Hollywood legend, champion of mental health awareness, and true American icon...please join us.

A real adventure film – for the 21st century. On a three-mast schooner packed with artists, scientists and ambitions worthy of Noah or Columbus, we set off for the end of the world: the rapidly melting massifs of North-East Greenland. An epic journey where the brave sailors on board encounter polar bear nightmares, Stone Age playgrounds and entirely new species. But in their encounter with new, unknown parts of the world, the crew of scientist and artists also confronted the existential questions of life. Curiosity, grand pathos and a liberating dose of humour come together in a superbly orchestrated film where one iconic image after the other seduces us far beyond the historical footnote that is humanity. A film conceived and brought to life on a grand scale - a long forgotten childhood dream lived out by grown artists and scientists.Reception Highlights include: Smooth musical entertainment by Duluth DJ Collective The Crunchy Bunch Free Beer courtesy of Lake Superior Brewing Company Free appetizers courtesy of Clyde Iron Works

SPECIAL EVENT Iron Will Cast and Crew Reception Saturday, May 31st 7-9 PM Zeitgeist Atrium In the rush of the Iron Will screening at The 2013 Duluth Superior Film Festival…we forgot to slow down, reminisce about the fun we had shooting Iron Will, and properly enjoy ourselves. So we thought since Mack is back for the 2014 edition of DSFF, we’d take some time to do it now. This event is open to all…but expect to see many of the cast and crew from that film shoot to be hanging around enjoying some food and talking about how much fun it was to make that film.

A SPELL TO WARD OFF THE DARKNESS

I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS

Thursday, May 29th Zinema 2 9:10 PM FREE

A SPELL follows an unnamed character through three seemingly disparate moments in his life. With little explanation, we join him in the midst of a 15-person collective on a small Estonian island; in isolation in the majestic wilderness of Northern Finland; and during a concert as the singer and guitarist of a black met al band in Norway. Marked by loneliness, ecstatic beauty and an optimism of the darkest sort, A SPELL is a radical proposition for the existence of utopia in the present. Starring musician Robert AA Lowe (best known for his intense live performances under the name LICHENS) in the lead role, A SPELL lies somewhere between fiction and non-fiction - it is at once a document of experience and an experience itself, an inquiry into transcendence that sees the cinema as a site for transformation. Director: Ben Rivers and Ben Russell 2013 98 minutes

Friday, May 30 Zinema 2 7:00 PM FREE

I Believe In Unicorns tells the story of an imaginative teenage girl who runs away from home with an older boy, but not even unicorns can save her now. From Student Academy Award nominated director Leah Meyerhoff (Twitch), Oscar nominated producer Heather Rae (Frozen River), and Emmy Award winning executive producer Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging), I Believe In Unicorns stars emerging talents Natalia Dyer (The Healer), Peter Vack (I Just Want My Pants Back), Julia Garner (Electrick Children), Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color) and the director's mother Toni Meyerhoff. Director: Leah Meyerhoff 2014 80 minutes

STRANGE LITTLE CAT

STOP THE POUNDING HEART

In the hands of masters like Jacques Tati, Lucrecia Martel, and Chantal Akerman, cinema that at first appears to merely observe and record is in fact masking intricately constructed commentaries, built from seemingly mundane experiences. In the case of The Strange Little Cat, an extended family-dinner gathering becomes an exquisitely layered confection ready for writer-director Ramon Zürcher’s razorsharp slicing. A mother desperately trying not to implode and her youngest daughter who explodes constantly form poles between which sons and daughters, aunts and uncles, cats and cousins weave in and around each other in the tight domestic space of a middle-class Berlin flat. Fans of Béla Tarr and Franz Kafka will find much to love, as will devotees of The Berlin School, of which this film represents a third-generation evolution. A comedic examination of the everyday that has been captivating audiences since its premiere at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival.

Sara is a young girl raised in a family of goat farmers. Her parents homeschool their twelve children, rigorously following the precepts of the Bible. Like her sisters, Sara is taught to be a devout woman, subservient to men while keeping her emotional and physical purity intact until marriage. When Sara meets Colby, a young amateur bull rider, she is thrown into crisis, questioning the only way of life she has ever known.

Director William Friedkin (THE EXORCIST, THE FRENCH CONNECTION) has finally resolved a labyrinth of legal issues and won the battle to bring his greatest film (seriously!) back to the big screen. The film has been restored by Warner Bros. under Friedkin's supervision. "The new restoration makes the film appear as if it was just made. None of the essentials -- the clothes, the hair -- are dated in any way. It looks the way it looked to me when I looked through the lens of the camera," said Friedkin. "I have a great fondness for Sorcerer, more than any other film I've made.. Sorcerer is the one I hope to be remembered for and the one film that came closest to my vision." The brilliant score from the geniuses of Tangerine Dream has also been remastered from the original 4-track stereo masters.

So begins the story of Old Man. A documentary constructed like none other, Old Man more closely resembles a biographical novel than a film. Set in and around a dying record store and told through striking still images and detailed personal stories, Old Man captures the enduring relationship between a father and son as they confront personal failures and a history of familial trouble and violence. Michigan craft beer embodies the uniquely American spirit of blue collar authenticity combined with innovation and entrepreneurship. Director Kevin Romeo and Rhino Media Productions from Kalamazoo, Michigan began with a humble idea to produce a film for beer fans and movie fans alike. Starting at rapidly growing Greenbush Brewing Co, the documentary travels the span of Michigan from Sawyer to Marquette and Grand Rapids to Detroit. Visiting brewers like Scott Sullivan, Ryan Sylvester, Eric Kuhnhenn, Joe Short; Hop growers like Brian Tennis, Joel Mulder, Jeff and Bonnie Steinman; Entrepreneurs like Ben Fleckenstein, Michael Kiser and Stephen Roginson. The Michigan Beer Film celebrates old core values in a new generation of community-conscious consumers and the proliferation of the Michigan craft beer industry. At the same time, the film addresses some challenges that brewers and entrepreneurs encounter in the midst of the industry’s rapid growth. Director: Kevin Romeo 2013 118 minutes

20,000 DAYS ON EARTH

PRODUCER ZACH SHEDD PRESENT! Friday, May 30 Teatro Zuccone 7:00 PM FREE

2013 DSFF 'MAXIMUS LEPUS' AWARD WINNER!

Hide Your Smiling Faces vividly depicts the young lives of two brothers as they abruptly come of age through the experience of a friend’s mysterious death. The event ripples under the surface of their town, unsettling the brothers and their friends in a way that they can’t fully understand. Once familiar interactions begin to take on a macabre tone in light of the tragic accident, leading Eric, 14, and Tommy, 9, to retreat into their wild surroundings. As the two brothers vocally face the questions they have about mortality, they simultaneously hold their own silent debates within their minds that build into seemingly insurmountable moral peaks. Hide Your Smiling Faces is a true, headlong glimpse into the raw spirit of youth, as well as the calluses that one often develops as a result of an unfiltered past.

THE FINAL MEMBER

COLD LOVE

DIRECTOR LONNIE DUPRE PRESENT! Sunday, June 1 Zinema 2 3:45 PM FREE

Saturday, May 31 Teatro Zuccone 7:00 PM FREE

Paris has the Louvre, London has the Tate Modern, and New York the Metropolitan Museum. But Husavik, Iceland—a diminutive village on the fringe of the Arctic Circle—boasts the world’s only museum devoted exclusively to painstakingly preserved male genitalia. Founded and curated by Sigurður “Siggi” Hjartarson, the Icelandic Phallological Museum houses four decades worth of mammalian members, from a petite field mouse to the colossal sperm whale, and every “thing” in between. Lamentably, Siggi’s collection lacks the holy grail of phallic phantasmagoria: a human specimen. Siggi’s world changes dramatically when he receives generous offers from an elderly Icelandic Casanova and an eccentric American. However, as the competition for eternal penile preservation heats up between the two men, Siggi soon discovers that this process is more complicated than it initially appeared. In their debut feature film, Jonah Bekhor and Zach Math follow Siggi on his dogged, often emotional quest to complete his exhibition in a peculiar, yet startlingly relatable, story of selffulfillment and the value of personal legacies (both big and small). Director: Jonah Bekhor & Zach Math 2013 75 minutes

Why do Polar explorers and mountain climbers leave the comforts of home to explore our planet’s remote world of ice and snow? How can they fall in love with something so harsh and unforgiving? Cold Love reveals the dramatic beauty and life-giving forces of our earth’s frozen places. When viewed up close, both the breathtaking majesty and the heartbreaking fragility of this world is clear for all to see. And in the seeing, we can’t help but be inspired to love and protect our earth’s frozen places, which regulate the global climate and provide a stable environment. For the past 3 decades, Arctic explorer Lonnie Dupre has traveled — by dogsled, skis and kayak — more than 15,000 miles throughout the High Arctic and polar regions. His life-long love of the Arctic and the knowledge he has gained by traveling and living with the Inuit people has led him to pursue one aim: advocating for these fragile Arctic environments that impact the well being of the whole planet. Director: Lonnie Dupre 2014 50 minutes
