It Is Fine! EVERYTHING IS FINE.
It Is Fine! EVERYTHING IS FINE goes into uncharted cinematic territory with screenwriter Steven C. Stewart starring in this semi-autobiographical, psycho-sexual, tale about a man with severe cerebral palsy and a fetish for girls with long hair. Part horror film, part exploitation picture and part documentary of a man who cannot express his sexuality in the way he desires, (due to his physical condition), this fantastical and often humorous tale is told completely from Stewart’s actual point of view – that of someone who has lived for years watching people do things he will never be able to do. Here, Stewart’s character is something of a lady killer, seducing a troubled, recently divorced mother (Margit Carstensen), her teenage daughter and any number of other ladies he encounters along the way. According to Crispin Glover, Stewart "wanted to show that handicapped people are human, sexual and can be horrible. He also states that “It is Fine! EVERYTHING IS FINE. will probably be the best film he has anything to do with in his entire career. Crispin Glover and his co-director David Brothers wanted to bring Stewart’s story to the screen. -74 minutes

HIDE YOUR SMILING FACES
PRODUCER ZACH SHEDD PRESENT! Friday, May 31st 8:30 PM Zinema 2 This film is IN COMPETITION
Hide Your Smiling Faces vividly depicts the young lives of two brothers as they abruptly come of age through the experience of a friend’s mysterious death. The event ripples under the surface of their town, unsettling the brothers and their friends in a way that they can’t fully understand. Once familiar interactions begin to take on a macabre tone in light of the tragic accident, leading Eric, 14, and Tommy, 9, to retreat into their wild surroundings. As the two brothers vocally face the questions they have about mortality, they simultaneously hold their own silent debates within their minds that build into seemingly insurmountable moral peaks. Hide Your Smiling Faces is a true, headlong glimpse into the raw spirit of youth, as well as the calluses that one often develops as a result of an unfiltered past. Director: Daniel Patrick Carbone USA 2013 81 minutes
NORTHERN LIGHT
PRODUCER LISA KJERULFF PRESENT! Friday, May 31st 7:15 PM Teatro Zuccone This film is IN COMPETITION
Set against the backdrop of a town’s annual snowmobile race, Northern Light interweaves captivating stories of recession-era America. The lives of three families change profoundly in the north woods of Michigan, where winters are unforgiving, jobs are hard to come by, and the line between living life and merely surviving is razor-thin. This is a cinematic, observational documentary that explores the American working class experience through character-based storytelling. As racers and their families pin their hopes to a 500 mile-long test of endurance, small triumphs and giant sacrifices are made along the way. Dysfunction and hardship permeate the cold, but this harsh setting often becomes an incubator for community and familial intimacy. Northern Light explores this disparity through the eyes of remarkably strong men and women, their stories told in richly styled portraiture. From a frozen corner of the country emerge three American families.

Ignoring all warnings, she rides a 400 mile rally--well beyond her ability. In the end, she crashes and wants to give up. But the motorcycle which first set her free gives her the courage to go on. Girl loses bike, girl gets bike back. Director: Eric Tretbar USA 2013 105 minutes
OFF LABEL
Thursday, May 30th 8:30 PM Zinema 2
From human guinea pigs testing drugs for pay to behind-the-scenes marketers to consumers struggling with life-altering illness, Off Label examines the medicated margins of American society through the stories of eight lives haunted by the commercialization of medicine and personal identity. In Iowa City a 22 year old army medic last stationed at Abu Ghraib prison struggles with the VA to find treatment to cope with PTSD. In Minneapolis a woman fights for reform after her son commits grisly suicide in an anti-depressant marketing study. In Rochester a young vagabond couple pay for their wedding by doing drug trials for money. In Santa Cruz a woman takes eighteen different prescriptions and lives in a roadside Bigfoot Museum. In Philadelphia an aging African American Muslim recounts the horrific experiments conducted upon him while he was imprisoned and forgives those who destroyed his physical health. In Milwaukee an eccentric medical anthropologist tracks the course and influence of the drug market he once helped shape as a drug rep for Pfizer. From these and other interwoven stories a tragic and bleakly comic look at life, health, and faith in the Twilight Zone of American pharmaceuticals emerges. Welcome to the strange pharmacy that is America. Directors: Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher USA 2012 80 minutes

DIRECTOR ADAM SEKULER AND ACTOR SEAN RYAN PRESENT! Saturday, June 1st 10:00 PM Zinema 2
Loneliness is not the same as being alone but Sean maybe experiencing both. One night he wakes up locks himself out of his apartment, without his cell phone. Just his luck, no one in building answers the door. In fact no one seems to be on the street. And none of his friends answer their doors either. Is he hallucinating? Is the city empty? Is he alone? And if so what happened to everyone? In this film, we experience the city through Sean, a character who in his loneliness discovers euphoria, isolation, and solitude. It is our worst nightmare, and our finest dream, brought to reality through a single man, wandering a single city devoid of life. Director: Adam Sekuler USA 2012 65 minutes

DIRECTOR JOHNATHON OLSEN PRESENT! Saturday, June 1st 8:30 PM Sons of Norway Hall
A relationship is composed of moments. Some are filled with conversation; others are quiet and uncertain. A wife so angry that she can’t speak and a husband overwhelmed with frustration venture into the forest. Pitching a tent amid the trees, with none of the city’s distractions to hide behind, a couple works through unspoken injury to once again connect. waltz submerges us in nature: a light rain on a calm lake, sunlight filtering through swaying leaves, a frog in a puddle. Filmed in Wisconsin by Zinema Manager Johnathon Olsen, waltz shows us the remarkable difference between the woods and the town, and between a couple in turmoil and in tranquility. At home in Minneapolis with Lynette, her wife of twenty years, s/he's Steve. Born male, Venus is transgender. To some, s/he's a pioneer, courageously exploring a brave new world of gender identity, free of categorization. To others, s/he's a freak. VENUS OF MARS is both the unique coming out story of Venus' gender-redefining journey, and the truly contemporary love story of a couple weathering dramatic changes in uncharted relationship territory. WILD BILL'S RUN
DIRECTOR MIKE SCHOLTZ PRESENT! Thursday, May 30th 7:00 PM Teatro Zuccone
This is the strange but true story of Wild Bill Cooper. Part Arctic adventure and part crime caper, WILD BILL’S RUN is an unforgettable ride with a true American folk hero. In the winter of 1972, Wild Bill Cooper led a ragtag crew of mechanics, ranchers and photographers on a grueling expedition across the polar ice. During some of the darkest days of the Cold War, their goal was to snowmobile 5,000 miles from Minnesota to Moscow. They didn’t quite make it. After the expedition returned home, Cooper embarked on a startling new adventure. Accused of leading a massive drug smuggling operation known as “the Marijuana Air Force,” he was named one of America’s Ten Most Wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service. But the wily outdoorsman was never caught. He refused to surrender to the law, just as he’d refused to surrender to the Arctic. Even today, his whereabouts remain a mystery. THE PRICE OF SAND DIRECTOR JIM TITTLE PRESENT! Saturday, June 1st 8:00 PM Teatro Zuccone This film is IN COMPETITION
"The Price of Sand" is a one-hour documentary film that started when Jim Tittle heard about a plan to put an open pit silica mine in his mother's quiet rural Minnesota neighborhood. A few basic questions led him to Wisconsin, where a "frac sand gold rush" was already in full swing. Sand mine neighbors, experts, protestors and politicians all spoke to his camera. Complete with aerial views of massive new sand pits and microscopic imagery of toxic silica dust, "The Price of Sand" explores the real price of frac sand, not just in dollars, but in lives, communities, and the future of the region. DIRECTOR GEORGE DESORT PRESENT! Saturday, June 1st 6:15 PM Teatro Zuccone This film is IN COMPETITION
In 2011, Chicago filmmaker George Desort spent eighty nights on Isle Royale, a wilderness island on Lake Superior. Traveling alone with his camera equipment and as much food as he could fit into his kayak, Desort explored the rugged terrain of the island, filming himself each difficult step of the way. MEMORIAL DAY
DIRECTOR SAMUEL FISCHER PRESENT! Friday, May 31st 5:20 PM Zinema 2
When SSgt. Kyle Vogel leaves a handwritten letter on the seat of his car, grabs a pistol and steps into a Minnesota forest, we wonder who he is and what he’s about to do. Flash back a few months as Vogel lies wounded in a hospital near Anbar Province, Iraq. The night before he’s due to return to combat, his doctor, Lt. Kelly Tripp, presses him on why he’s so obsessed with collecting battle souvenirs. Kyle proceeds to tell her what happened on Memorial Day, 1993, when, as a 13-year old boy, he discovered his Grandpa Bud’s WWII footlocker. Though reluctant to talk about the war, Bud, who served with the 82nd Airborne, strikes a deal with Kyle: “Pick any three objects, and I’ll tell you the story behind each one.” As we see Bud’s WWII tales from Europe, we also see how Kyle’s experiences in Iraq have paralleled them—and how that day on the porch will affect how he ultimately deals with the losses, regrets and moral dilemmas that unite all soldiers across wars and generations. Director: Samuel Fischer USA 2011 104 minutes
IN WINTER (W.I.P. Screening)
DIRECTOR ALEX GUTTERMAN PRESENT! Sunday, June 2nd 7:30 PM Zinema 2 FREE!
Join Local Director Alex Gutterman ("In Winter") for more or less freewheeling discussion, based loosely around camera footage from his recent feature.
Aspects of the filmmaking process shall be examined, using "In Winter", currently transitioning from production into post, as a case study. "In Winter" follows the awakening of a young woman of humble circumstances (Annika) as her life in a small Northern town is transformed by the arrival of an older, wealthy stranger from the East (Mark). As an entanglement between the two deepens, its effects are felt rippling through the small group of individuals whose lives overlap with the couple: a minister with one eye on God and one on Annika, a diner waitress who fancies leaving town in Mark's European car, and several others. All the while, Annika's dying grandfather (a US Army combat veteran), the watching eyes of local Ojibwe natives, and the harsh enclosing bitterness of Winter itself bear witness to a quiet, powerful, human drama unfolding under the steel grey sky. Shooting Jan/Feb 2013, Release November 2013

FLIMMER
Saturday, June 1st 6:45 PM Sons of Norway Hall
A wry workplace comedy etched with impeccable, retro-tinged design, this Swedish treat has been frequently likened to both Office Spaceand the work of the Coen brothers. Things aren’t great at Unicom, a telecommunications giant on the cusp of unleashing a new 4G network. CEO Tord (Allan Svensson, as funny as he is perma-tanned) is reeling from a disastrous ad campaign, while pushover bean-counter Kenneth, saddled with a broken computer, keeps striking out both with the IT department and his internet dating service. Things only get hairier when a couple of electrical engineers accidentally plunge the entire area into darkness (and one of themselves into sterility). Bouncing between interlocking storylines and brimming with absurd gags, director Patrick Eklund’s first feature works his ensemble cast with expert comic timing. Director: Patrik Eklund 2012 In Swedish with English subtitles 100 minutes
