RICHARD EATON SINGERS

Founded in 1951 by the late Richard S. Eaton, Edmonton’s symphonic choir, Richard Eaton Singers (RES), has played a leading role in the cultural community of the city for seven decades. Celebrating their seventieth anniversary this December, RES has always been dedicated to the enjoyment, study and performance of great choral music to an international standard of excellence, and to fostering the appreciation and future of this music.

RES performances have included Edmonton premieres of many choral masterpieces such as Bach’s St. John and St. Matthew Passions, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Britten’s War Requiem, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, Schubert’s Mass No 5, and Duruflé’s Requiem as well as many shorter sacred and secular works.

RES has commissioned and produced premiere performances by Canadian composers, including Allan Bevan’s No Mortal Business and Last Light Above the World, as well as works by John Estacio, Christos Hatzis, Ruth Watson Henderson, Stephanie Martin, Imant Raminsh and Mark Sirett. They have also participated in several ESO premieres, including Malcolm Forsyth’s A Ballad of Canada and Robert Rival’s Delights and Discords.

RES also regularly performs with other Edmonton area choirs, most recently with Kappella Kyrie in a concert of sacred music of the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

Often partnering with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra RES has created many memorable choral events in our city, including the performance of Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand to celebrate the opening of the Francis Winspear Centre for Music.

RES & ESO have a long history of performing Handel’s Messiah together since our first collaboration in 1968, and we co-produced a performance in 2021.

In recent years RES has also joined forces with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble to perform a number of masterpieces from the Baroque and Classical periods, including oratorios of Handel, sacred works of Mozart and Haydn, and Bach’s Passions and his Mass in B Minor.

ARTISTIC STAFF Conductor, Leonard Ratzlaff joined the Department of Music at University of Alberta in 1981, and at the same time was appointed the Music Director of Richard Eaton Singers, and now is celebrating his 40th year in that position. In addition to conducting and preparing Richard Eaton Singers in many of the great symphonic/choral masterworks, Ratzlaff has also conducted numerous premieres of commissions by Canadian composers. Under his direction choirs have toured both nationally and internationally, with recent tours to Germany, Greece, Ireland and the UK. A native of Alberta, Ratzlaff took his music training in British Columbia and Manitoba, and his doctoral studies in conducting at the University of Iowa, where his dissertation on the Te Deum of Anton Bruckner was awarded the American Choral Director Association’s Julius Herford Dissertation Prize. As a member of the faculty at U of Alberta, he has been instrumental in developing the most established graduate program in choral conducting in Canada, which has graduated well over 60 students in its 30 year tenure, many of whom are now very active in the Edmonton choral community as well as nationally and internationally. He has directed the UofA Madrigal Singers to successes in several national and international competitions, and produced 5 CD recordings with this ensemble, two of which earned them the National Choral Award in the Recordings category (Balulalow, 2000, and The Passing of the Year, 2006). Leonard Ratzlaff makes frequent appearances across Canada as a guest conductor, clinician and bass soloist. He has been inducted into the Order of Canada and the Alberta Order of Excellence, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Conductor, Melanie Turgeon began studying conducting at the age of 16, under the tutelage of Wolodymyr Kolesnyk, former conductor of Kyiv State Opera and Ballet Theatre. She completed her post-secondary education at the University of Alberta (BAMus and MMus), followed by the University of Illinois, graduating with a Doctor of the Musical Arts Degree in Choral Music. Dr. Turgeon is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at The King’s University in Edmonton, Alberta, and Adjunct Professor at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

She has conducted many choirs and ensembles and has presented research at several academic institutions and conferences both in Canada and internationally.

Melanie has also toured extensively with her choirs, including three successful European tours. Being of Ukrainian descent, she has devoted herself to researching and promoting Ukrainian music, primarily sacred music. From 20022018, she served as Music Director and Cantor at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Edmonton. She is a member of the Eparchial Liturgical Commission, a role that results in organizing workshops and creating publications to educate and assist cantors in the Ukrainian Catholic Church. She hopes to formally establish a Certificate of Eastern Christian Worship Program at The King’s University in the near future. Highlights in Dr. Turgeon’s research endeavors include the publication of a book entitled, Composing the Sacred in Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia (2008), and the creation of the first bilingual hymnal for the Ukrainian Catholic Church, entitled Sing to our God (2008), which has been distributed worldwide.

Melanie has released three recordings with Heruvymy Ukrainian Female Quartet, and one with King’s Choirs. In 2010 she founded Kappella Kyrie, an award-winning chamber choir primarily devoted to Slavic sacred music. Melanie has been heavily involved with the Ukrainian Art Song Project for more than a decade. She is honoured to be a faculty member and the co-director of this year’s Summer Institute in Toronto, Ontario.

KAPPELLA KYRIE

Kappella Kyrie Slavic Chamber Choir was founded in the spring of 2010 by Dr. Melanie Turgeon and others in a conscientious effort to explore, highlight and uphold the rich, centuries-old musical tradition of the Christian East, with a particular focus on Slavic sacred music as it is performed in the concert hall as well as in the liturgical context.

To date, Kappella Kyrie has delighted audiences with several wide-ranging and collaborative initiatives and has performed with Chorale Saint-Jean, The King’s University Chamber Choir and the Calgary Youth Orchestra, among others. In June 2015, Kappella Kyrie marked their fifth anniversary with Rachmaninoff’s famous All-Night Vigil, celebrated as an actual church service.

November 2017 saw Kappella Kyrie perform with renowned Canadian tenor, Benjamin Butterfield and in June 2019 they proudly staged the North American premiere of Ukrainian Baroque composer Artem Vedel’s sacred concerto with orchestra, Помолихся лицу Твоему всем сердцем моим, along with Vivaldi’s spectacular Gloria, both performed on period instruments at Baroque pitch (415 Hz).

In February 2020, Kappella Kyrie celebrated its 10th anniversary with “A Journey Through Lent,” collaborating with The King’s University Chamber Choir and faculty guest performers Dr. Joachim Segger and Dr. Charles Stolte to prayerfully showcase pieces sung in the Eastern Church during the Great Fast.

Beyond the concert hall, Kappella Kyrie toured Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary in May of 2014. They gained national recognition, placing second in the Pan-Cultural Traditions category of the Choral Canada National competition in 2015 and first in 2019. Their community service includes performances at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the Edmonton’s Maximum Security Institution, the Marian Centre, Edmonton City Hall and Newman Theological College.

Twice, Kappella Kyrie has had the distinct privilege to work with American Baroque Orchestra conductor and composer Mark Bailey, most recently in a three-day workshop last month with Richard Eaton Singers. Kappella Kyrie is deeply honoured to partner once again with RES for this special performance today in support of those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

PROGRAM NOTES

Richard Eaton Singers (RES) and Kappella Kyrie Slavic Chamber Choir had planned to perform Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil in June 2022; however, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, this plan changed entirely. Despite the fact that Rachmaninoff fled Russia in 1918, following the Russian Revolution, there was still a strong unwillingness to perform music by a Russian composer at this time. Therefore, Richard Eaton Singers and Kappella Kyrie embarked on a new path, a fundraising concert in support of Ukrainian refugees in Edmonton, entitled “Peace and Reconciliation”.

With less than three months to the concert date, the choirs began rehearsing an entirely different program consisting of Ukrainian choral music, complimented by classical choral repertoire on the theme of peace and reconciliation.

The Ukrainian choral music included in this concert spans from Bortniansky through to more contemporary Ukrainian female composers Lesia Dychko and Hanna Havrylets. Very suitably the concert begins with a heartfelt supplication to the Mother of God. The text implores: “Be our protector… help us to defeat the enemies that have attacked us.”

Ukrainians have a steadfast devotion to Mary and they have clung to their faith during this turbulent time; thus, it is appropriate to include a few selections from the Divine Liturgy, the central worship service in the Eastern Church. You will hear true classics of Liturgy repertoire: Bortniansky’s Cherubic Hymn No. 7 and Leontovych’s U tsarstvi, balanced with an ambitious and grand setting of Dostoino ye by Lesia Dychko.

In the Baroque period the term “concerto” was imported from Western music to describe a new a cappella style in which soloists or a smaller group of singers alternated with massive tutti choruses. A typical sacred concerto consisted of three or four separate movements with contrasting tempi. The texts were non-liturgical, yet they were sacred and most commonly taken from the Psalms. In particular, three Ukrainian composers brought the choral concerto genre to unprecedented heights: Bortniansky, Berezovsky and Vedel’. Despite being written in the 18th century, today’s concert features the North American premiere of a recently published sacred concerto by Maksym Berezovsky.

Three movements from Valeri Kikta’s oratorio, Sviatyi Dnipro (Sacred Dnipro) will open the second half of the concert. In 1993 the Dnipro Choir of Edmonton celebrated its 40th Anniversary, and to commemorate this event they commissioned Kikta to write a piece, resulting in an 11-movement oratorio. The Dnipro River celebrates the very essence of life in Ukraine; it is the backbone of the country. Each movement in this oratorio depicts a different epoch of Ukraine’s history, viewed from the banks of the Dnipro River. Movement 4 describes the acceptance of Christianity as the national faith of Ukraine in 988. Prince Volodymyr took the people of the nation into the waters of the Dnipro and baptized them. The fifth movement portrays the results of Christianity. In addition to its newfound faith, Ukraine reached its cultural and political zenith. In 1019, the Prince of Kyiv, Yaroslav the Wise, began a 35-year reign in which he built cities, several churches, and schools. We then move ahead several centuries and movement 10 expresses how Ukraine became a desolate, barren wasteland due to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. A metaphor illustrates how Ukraine sobs, like a young child awoken from a deep sleep. But the river Dnipro embraced her and shields her from despair just as a mother would.

Cherished works from classical choral repertoire are among the selections by non-Ukrainian composers.

This half of the program includes music by Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Fauré, Ireland, as well as contemporary composers Karl Jenkins, John Rutter, and Canadian Rupert Lang. Shortly after the war in Ukraine began, John Rutter composed A Ukrainian Prayer. The text pleads for protection on Ukraine and entreats strength, faith, and hope. Many choirs worldwide have embraced and performed this work in recent weeks to show their support for and solidarity with Ukraine.

Showing support for Ukraine and particularly for those who have been forced to flee Ukraine is the primary goal of this concert. We hope this event yields crucial financial support and that the Ukrainian refugees present with us are truly touched and inspired hearing their Ukrainian music passionately sung by both Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians. We want them to feel welcomed, embraced and supported by their new community.
