RICHARD EATON SINGERS

Founded in 1951 by the late Richard S. Eaton, Edmonton’s symphonic choir, Richard Eaton Singers (RES), has played a leading role in the cultural community of the city for seven decades. Celebrating their seventieth anniversary this December, RES has always been dedicated to the enjoyment, study and performance of great choral music to an international standard of excellence, and to fostering the appreciation and future of this music.

RES performances have included Edmonton premieres of many choral masterpieces such as Bach’s St. John and St. Matthew Passions, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Britten’s War Requiem, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, Schubert’s Mass No 5, and Duruflé’s Requiem as well as many shorter sacred and secular works.

RES has commissioned and produced premiere performances by Canadian composers, including Allan Bevan’s No Mortal Business and Last Light Above the World, as well as works by John Estacio, Christos Hatzis, Ruth Watson Henderson, Stephanie Martin, Imant Raminsh and Mark Sirett. They have also participated in several ESO premieres, including Malcolm Forsyth’s A Ballad of Canada and Robert Rival’s Delights and Discords.

The choir has traveled extensively across Canada, to the Netherlands, Britain, and Germany, and has

participated in choir exchanges, including with Calgary Philharmonic Choir and Vancouver Bach Choir.

RES also regularly performs with other Edmonton area choirs, most recently with Kappella Kyrie in a concert of sacred music of the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

Often partnering with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra RES has created many memorable choral events in our city, including the performance of Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand to celebrate the opening of the Francis Winspear Centre for Music.

RES & ESO have a long history of performing Handel’s Messiah together since our first collaboration in 1968, and we co-produced a performance in 2021.

In recent years RES has also joined forces with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble to perform a number of masterpieces from the Baroque and Classical periods, including oratorios of Handel, sacred works of Mozart and Haydn, and Bach’s Passions and his Mass in B Minor.

The balance of the RES 2021-22 season will include an all-Beethoven concert with the ESO as our guests in April, a delayed celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, followed by a collaboration with Kappella Kyrie of a program of Slavonic music emanating from Ukraine, as well as other repertoire on the theme of Peace and Reconciliation.

ARTISTIC STAFF Conductor, Leonard Ratzlaff joined the Department of Music at University of Alberta in 1981, and at the same time was appointed the Music Director of Richard Eaton Singers, and now is celebrating his 40th year in that position. In addition to conducting and preparing Richard Eaton Singers in many of the great symphonic/choral masterworks, Ratzlaff has also conducted numerous premieres of commissions by Canadian composers. Under his direction choirs have toured both nationally and internationally, with recent tours to Germany, Greece, Ireland and the UK. A native of Alberta, Ratzlaff took his music training in British Columbia and Manitoba, and his doctoral studies in conducting at the University of Iowa, where his dissertation on the Te Deum of Anton Bruckner was awarded the American Choral Director Association’s Julius Herford Dissertation Prize. As a member of the faculty at U of Alberta, he has been instrumental in developing the most established graduate program in choral conducting in Canada, which has graduated well over 60 students in its 30 year tenure, many of whom are now very active in the Edmonton choral community as well as nationally and internationally. He has directed the UofA Madrigal Singers to successes in several national and international competitions, and produced 5 CD recordings with this ensemble, two of which earned them the National Choral Award in the Recordings category (Balulalow, 2000, and The Passing of the Year, 2006). Leonard Ratzlaff makes frequent appearances across Canada as a guest conductor, clinician and bass soloist. He has been inducted into the Order of Canada and the Alberta Order of Excellence, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Assistant Conductor, RJ Chambers has always had a passion for music education and performance. In 2008, RJ completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with an emphasis in vocal performance and graduated with honours. In the summer of 2014, RJ completed a Masters in Music degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Alberta under the direction of Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff.

Well known in Edmonton’s choral community, RJ is an accomplished choral conductor and serves as the Artistic Director and Conductor for ALIVE (A Laurier Intergenerational Vocal Ensemble), Dawn Chorus Choir, and Parkland Celebration Choir in Spruce Grove, and Assistant Conductor for Richard Eaton Singers, as well as soloing at a number of concerts in and around Edmonton. In addition to his work in Edmonton’s choral community, RJ has also served as a clinician throughout the province and currently serves as the President of the Alberta Music Festival Association.

ARTISTIC STAFF Pianist Leanne Regehr, is a versatile and sensitive pianist who is widely recognized for her intuitive ability to collaborate with other musicians across an extensive range of repertoire. She is the featured soloist in a live recording of Victor Davies’ Mennonite Piano Concerto with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and is currently based in Edmonton where she serves on the faculties of the University of Alberta and The King’s University.

Leanne’s reputation in opera has grown through engagements as a repetiteur with Shreveport Opera, Mercury Opera, and Edmonton Opera. Her dedication to the development of young singers has been shown through her work as a faculty member with Opera NUOVA and Cowtown Opera Summer Academy, as a staff pianist for Sherrill Milnes’ VoicExperience Program in Florida, and as a Coaching Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival. She has performed with many organizations including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, Pro Coro Canada, Da Camera Singers, Luminous Voices, and the Academy Concert Series in Toronto.

Leanne completed her Doctor of Music in Piano Performance at Northwestern University and explored further studies at the Banff School of Fine Arts, the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Aspen Music Festival. She has enjoyed playing the masterworks of the choral repertoire during her twenty seasons as accompanist with the Richard Eaton Singers, and freelances as a soloist, vocal coach, recital partner, and adjudicator.

EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

In its 70th year, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra has taken its place as one of Canada’s foremost orchestral ensembles. Its current roster includes 48 full-time musicians from Canada and around the world performing a wide-ranging repertoire from great classical masterworks to Hollywood scores to new works. The orchestra is the resident artistic ensemble, “the home team”, of the Winspear Centre, among the best acoustic concert halls in North America. The ESO has also performed in venues across Alberta, western Canada, and the Northwest Territories. The orchestra made their Carnegie Hall debut in New York in May 2012 as part of the Spring for Music festival.

THE SOLOISTS Soprano Jolaine Kerley, is active as a soprano soloist, voice instructor, adjudicator, choral conductor, and clinician. She is currently Assistant Professor of Music at Concordia University of Edmonton as well as artistic director of Ariose Women’s Choir. Jolaine has been heard frequently as soprano soloist with choruses and orchestras throughout North America including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Alberta Baroque Orchestra, Richard Eaton Singers, Luminous Voices, and Pro Coro Canada. Jolaine performs regularly with Early Music Alberta. Most recent solo engagements include Music by Women Composers with the Alberta Baroque Orchestra, Arietta with Early Music Alberta, Match Girl Passion with Pro Coro Canada, Alan Bevan’s Nou Goth Sonne Under Wode at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Bach’s Johannes Passion with Calgary’s Professional vocal ensemble Luminous Voices, and an immersive Game of Thrones production with HBO and Giant Spoon Productions in Austin, Texas. Upcoming performances include Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy with the Richard Eaton Singers.

Mezzo-soprano Celia Raven Lee, is a regular collaborator with VoiceScapes, Rosa Barocca and Luminous Voices, a founding member of LaVIe, and has worked with the Festival Chorus, Pro Musica Society, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Wild Rose Trio, and Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. She was an alto soloist for the Calgary premieres of Bach’s Mass in B Minor and St. John Passion at baroque pitch, for which the Calgary Herald described her as “warm-toned and expressive”. Other oratorio productions include Handel’s Messiah and Dixit Dominus, the Vivaldi Gloria and the St. Saens Christmas Oratorio.

Operatic and musical theatre roles include Dido in Dido and Aeneas, Annio in La Clemenza di Tito and the Queen in The Queen, the Bear and the Bumblebee. Celia studied privately with Joy Tappenden, Glyn Evans and Catherine Robbin, with whom she completed her senior year in Voice at York University. She has participated in young artist programs including Tafelmusik, the Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, and the Conservatory of Victoria. Celia has a background in Environmental Biology (University of Guelph) and Environmental Design (University of Calgary), and consults on environmental and social policy initiatives.

THE SOLOISTS Tenor Caleb Nelson, has been an active singer, teacher, and sound engineer in Edmonton’s musical community for nearly 20 years. As one of Western Canada’s most sought-after tenors, Caleb commands expertise in classical, contemporary, and pop vocal technique, and has been a frequent collaborator with Alberta’s professional choirs, including 18 seasons with Pro Coro Canada and his tenure as a founding member of Luminous Voices. An in-demand teacher and pedagogue, Caleb is the owner and operator of Silver Studios, where he teaches voice, recording technique, and musicianship. Caleb’s recent work includes the development of “Car Choir” and numerous virtual ensemble recordings.

A baritone with vibrant and soothing vocal qualities, Michael Kurschat’s voice holds strong command in the works of Bach, Mozart and contemporary scores. A graduate of the University of Alberta music program, Michael has been heard as a concert soloist in many of Bach’s cantatas, St. John Passion, B Minor Mass, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs, with groups including Pro Coro Canada, Richard Eaton Singers, Alberta Baroque Ensemble, Edmonton Youth Orchestra, Kantorei Choir in Calgary and the Kelowna Community Chorus. He has been a core member and regular soloist with Pro Coro Canada since 2000.

PROGRAM NOTES

As many of our regular patrons will recall, Richard Eaton Singers were in the final stages of preparing a concert featuring the choral music of Ludwig van Beethoven in April 2020, the 250th anniversary year of his birth in 1770, when the pandemic’s outbreak forced us as well as many of Edmonton’s performing ensembles to cease rehearsals and performances in March of that year. After nearly two years of dormancy as a choir, we have so greatly appreciated the opportunity to resume regular rehearsals and to remount this project, as just our second performance of the 2021-22 season (December’s Handel Messiah, jointly produced with the Edmonton Symphony, being the first).

Beethoven’s important legacy is most closely associated in his writing for instruments, whether for larger symphonic forces or in solo and chamber music. In commenting on his writing of his lone opera Fidelio, he acknowledged a somewhat unsure stance when writing for the voice: “When sound stirs within me I always hear the full orchestra; I know what to expect of instrumentalists, who are capable of almost everything, but with vocal composition I must always be asking myself: can this be sung?”

The Ninth Symphony and Missa Solemnis stand out as monuments in the music of the Classical period, and resoundingly demonstrate his willingness to push the boundaries of possibilities for the voice. These tendencies are plainly evident in all of the music you will hear tonight as well.

Our program begins with three miniature gems written in the early 1800s. Die Ehre Gottes aus der Natur was actually the fourth song in his six-song vocal cycle, the Gellert Lieder, Op. 48, written in 1802.

Beethoven had chosen to arrange six of the songs CPE Bach had set to the poems of Christian Fürchtegott Gellert in 1757, as a cycle for voice and piano. As one of his earliest works for the voice, this cycle compellingly exhibits the full dramatic and lyrical potential of his creativity. We perform this excerpt in an arrangement for chorus and orchestra by Manfred Hößl.

Elegischer Gesang, Op. 118, was written in 1814 for mixed voices and string quartet, as a dedicatory work to one of his most faithful patrons, Baron Pasqualati,

in memory of his wife Eleanore, who had died in childbirth three years earlier at the age of 24. The tender text, beginning with “Sanft, wie du lebtest”, or “Life has gently touched thee, and passed as softly”, illustrates well the circumstances of her passing. It is one of Beethoven’s least known vocal works, and he was not successful in getting it published until 1826, a year before his own death, hence the late Opus number.

The last of this opening set, Welten singen Dank und Ehre, is the final chorus from Beethoven’s lone attempt at the oratorio genre, Christus am Ölberge, Op. 85. Like the Gellert Lieder, this work was completed in 1802 and premiered in 1803 at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien, and although it is not considered one of his outstanding works, the final very energized chorus has found great popularity, especially in an arrangement with English text, Hallelujah.

Our first half concludes with his first really popular extended work involving the voice, his Choral Fantasy, Op. 80. Written in 1808, Beethoven wrote it for piano, vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, to intentionally draw together all the forces he was planning for a fund-raising concert (for his own financial benefit) to be held in December of that year. This concert included no less than the premieres of his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, his Fourth Piano Concerto, and excerpts from his Mass in C. Beethoven himself played the piano solo part in the Fantasy, which concluded this concert that apparently lasted well over 3 hours!

This 20-minute work begins with a highly improvisational dialogue between solo piano and orchestra, building to a most dramatic finale including the vocal soloists and chorus. The final section, utilizing a “theme and variations” approach, exhibits many traits that point to the Choral Finale of the Ninth Symphony.

The Mass in C Major, Op. 86, which concludes our concert, was written on a commission from Prince Nicolas Esterházy in Eisenstadt, a small city to the south of Vienna, where Franz Joseph Haydn had lived and worked as court composer for most of his adult life. One of Haydn’s great achievements was his six orchestral Masses to be performed on September 12,

the name day of the Prince’s wife Maria Hermenegild, from 1796-1802, including the well known Nelson Mass and Mass in Time of War, both of which have featured in RES’s repertoire in the past. Having known and admired some of these works, Beethoven was anxious to present a work of similar dimensions that would possibly lead to further commissions from the Prince, but upon hearing the Mass at its premier in September 1807, the Prince was anything but pleased – an anecdote relates the Prince’s comments to Beethoven: “But my dear Beethoven, what is that you have done again?” The composer was so offended by this rude response that he changed the dedication of the Mass to one of his other patrons, Prince Kinsky when it was published several years later.

Fortunately for subsequent performers and audiences, this Mass has rightly taken its place as one of the most substantial works in the Austrian Classical Mass tradition. Although not known for his Catholic faith, there are many clear markers in this work of Beethoven’s appreciation for the power of the Mass text, especially in his highly charged combination of lyricism and dramatic writing of the Gloria and Credo, as well as his inspired use of the solo quartet throughout, but especially prominent in the Benedictus and Dona nobis pacem sections. The Mass has a particularly beautiful ending, where Beethoven brings back the opening phrases of the Mass’s Kyrie in setting the word pacem: peace.
