Bus driver is a hero A BUS driver has been hailed a hero after helping a Yate woman who has epilepsy and diabetes who collapsed on a service. Rachael Jay, 46, has seizures because of epilepsy and hypoglycaemic attacks due to her type 1 diabetes, and she has been helped four times by First West of England bus driver James Mills. Rachael is a regular traveller on the Y2 service between Bristol and Yate. James has called the ambulance on each occasion and stayed with her until it arrived. Rachael has now had her medication altered so she is feeling much better, but she wanted to thank James properly, so she met him at Marlborough Street bus station in Bristol, above. She is also eager to raise awareness, particularly as her son Jacob, 8, has also been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Rachael said: "I want to thank James for being so brilliant and acting so quickly when I have suffered attacks on the bus. Living with epilepsy and diabetes can really affect your lifestyle and for James to have presence of mind and to act so swiftly on all those occasions really helped." First West of England head of operations Chris Hanson said: "We are very proud of James, who responded as we would hope all our colleagues would do in the same or similar circumstances. "We are pleased that Rachael seems to be none the worse for her experiences and really touched that she has taken the trouble to recognise James for his actions."

Yate park is one of best in the West KINGSGATE Park has been recognised in a competition to find the best park in the South West. The park was one of 28 nominated by members of the public across the South West regional heat of the contest organised by charity Fields in Trust. The competition was opened to an online vote and Kingsgate was one of four parks in the region to be awarded Much Loved status, along with Page Park in Staple Hill and parks in Devon and Cornwall. Page Park was the overall regional winner and the contest now goes on to a national stage: the UK winner is due to be announced on September 12. In total 364 parks and green spaces across the UK were nominated this year, with tens of thousands of votes cast. This year is the fourth that the UK's Best Park awards has been run by Fields in Trust, which aims to help protect the country's parks and green spaces. Sue Swanborough of the Friends of Kingsgate Park said she was "absolutely over the moon" about the award. Now the friends are hoping that it may be a summer of gongs, as a Royal Horticultural Society judge was in town recently. Steph Purser was considering the park for the Royal Horticultural Society Pride in Parks competition, part of South West in Bloom. It has won five stars for two consecutive years.

Judge Steph Purser with Pauline Sealey, Jude Cameron, Councillor Tony Davies, John Purser, Michael Pearce, Councillor Cheryl Kirby and estates manager Phil Jones at Kingsgate Park.

Tim Fairhead from the South West Branch of the Avon Wildlife Trust gave her a tour of the nature reserve which has transformed one area of the park. Once Kingsgate Park was the formal gardens and tennis courts of Stanshawes Court. The old estate's ha-ha, a sunken barrier origianlly built to keep out livestock, is still there and parts of the wall which surrounded the kitchen garden can still be seen nearby. Now it is popular with all ages and also used by schools for outdoor education. The friends are constantly raising funds to pay for improved facilities. n NEWS THESE dramatic pictures from Yate firefighters show the extent of an arson attack which destroyed 12 cars and a caravan. Police are appealing for information about the incident, which happened at a Yate scrapyard in the early hours of August 21. Crews from the town's fire station were called to Victoria Recovery in North Road after a 999 call at around 1.15am, reporting that vehicles were on fire. Two crews went to the scene and police were also called in. Firefighters needed breathing apparatus as they tackled the flames using jets, hoses and foam. Yate Fire Station staff said the fire had been "quickly brought under control". Avon Fire and Rescue Service said that the fire was believed to have started deliberately and police have confirmed that they are treating the incident as suspicious. Anyone with information about the fire should call the police on 101 and quote the crime reference number 5219 192 111.

Yate Academy hails 'best-ever' results YATE Academy is celebrating the best set of GCSE results in its history. The school in Sundridge Park says its results, released on August 22, put it among the best in the country for pupil progress. Eight out of ten pupils achieved a grade 4 – equivalent to the previous C grade – or better in maths this year, an improvement of 7% on last year. In English, the number of students achieving level 5 or more results rose from 54% to 63%. The percentage of students achieving a Grade 4 or higher in both English and maths is 72% up from 50% two years ago. The school's progress 8 scores, which measure the improvement between a pupil's expected performance at the start of secondary school and their actual performance at GCSE, have provisionally risen by 20% from +0.69 to +0.89. Last year's scores had already

put Yate Academy in the top 4% of schools in the country. Among the high achievers were Evie G Williams, Ella Carboni, Lydia Jones, Millie Greenaway and Ethan Clack, who all achieved Level 9s and BTEC distinction * grades in several subjects. Exceptional progress and some outstanding grades were achieved by Patryk Pajak, Madison Leppard, Kate Dix, Kai Dervishi and Nik Kajak. Head teacher Isabel Ambrose said: “I am absolutely thrilled with these well-deserved GCSE results. The hard work from students and staff, along with the support from their families, has made this momentous achievement possible. "I am so very proud that the academy has increased outcomes in all areas and sustained success over the last two years. "I have loved working with this particular cohort and I wish

them the very best of luck for their futures”. The school says the latest figures confirm its vision that all children who attend the school have a better chance of success than if they attended any other school in the country. Deputy head teacher and raising standards leader Phillipa Lewis said: “What a mountain we

Ethan Clack and Danny Frankcom were among those celebrating good GCSE results at Yate Academy have climbed together this year. "I am so thrilled that our students are now equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to tackle the next chapter of their lives successfully. "We can’t wait to welcome them back into 6th form and continue to support them to further success.”

Boys excel at Brimsham Green THE head teacher of Brimsham Green School in Yate says she is proud of the way boys have worked to close the 'achievement gap' with girls in GCSEs. The school in Broad Lane announced that all-round performance in GCSEs had improved, with three quarters of all pupils attaining a grade 4 or above in English and maths, with half achieving a grade 5 or above. Brimsham Green head teacher Kim Garland was particularly pleased with the way boys' performance and progress had improved after the school had focussed on the issue. Ms Garland said: “Nationally,

for many years, we have seen boys underperform when compared to girls. "We have been determined to make this not the case at Brimsham. "I am proud to share that boys’ overall progress, as well as their attainment in English and in maths, have all risen. "We are not complacent, of course, and this will continue to be a focus for all staff, however we really do have some stand-out performers.” Amongst the highest achievers highlighted by the school were Jack Barry, Callum Hendy, Joshua Holloway and

Sammy Woodman, who achieved an impressive 22 Grade 9s and 8s between them whilst also studying for further maths. Boys who made "exceptional" progress, exceeding their target grades, were Joshua Gill, Isaac Luke, Thomas Reed and Tyler Sansum. The highest achievers amongst the girls were Ellie Griffin, Nicole Freeman and Daisy Harvey, who between them were awarded 20 Grade 9s and 8s. Some girls made outstanding progress, and Ms Garland praised Iona Jardine, Chloe Bushell and Esme Littlechild for

their "resilience and aspiration". Chair of governors Shaun Bailey said: “We are delighted that the school’s performance in the Basics measure (English and Maths GCSE) has improved on last year, but we are also proud that the school’s performing and creative arts flourish. This is testimony to the fact that the school has passionately maintained the breadth of its curriculum. "Undoubtedly parents’ input has been hugely influential, and I hope they are celebrating with their children.”

THE number of pupils achieving the top grades in their GCSE results is up this year at Chipping Sodbury School. The school reported that a large proportion of those taking the exams this year achieved strong passes in all their subjects, showing a continuing trend of improvement. Head teacher Katherine Turner praised all pupils for their hard work, mentioning not only the highest achievers, but also pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, with special educational needs or who gained a GCSE early. The number of students gaining grades 4 and 5+ in English and Maths has also continued to grow. This year was the first that every subject studied at GCSE was given a numerical score rather than a letter, completing the transition to the new grading system which started two years ago. Many pupils achieved the top grade of 9 in a string of subjects, among them Poppy Smith, who received 6 grade 9’s. The school also highlighted "outstanding" results from Tom Peaston,

"This year we are celebrating a big improvement in the achievement of students with a special educational need

and those students who are disadvantaged. This is testament that students of all abilities achieve well at our school. “I am delighted that there have been some outstanding results from our younger students who have taken early GCSEs which is part of our exciting and innovative curriculum model. This has ensured that many students already have at least one GCSE as they enter Year 10 or 11. We regard this as further proof that we are securing great results for our school community. “Very well done to all our students, many of whom we will see return to the 6th Form. Whatever the next stage in their academic careers, we wish them the very best. Chipping Sodbury School has great young people who are a credit to our whole school community.”

Sixth form celebrates A-level successes YATE and Sodbury sixth formers are moving on to universities, colleges and apprenticeships with some "fantastic" results on their CVs. The heads of Cotswold Edge Sixth Form (CEDGE) - the post 16 consortium of Chipping Sodbury School, Yate Academy and Brimsham Green School – have spoken of their pride in the achievements of their pupils in A-levels and vocational courses. Yate Academy head Izzy Ambrose said: “I am thrilled that the partnership working between our three schools has enabled so many students to continue to study locally and exceed their expected grades.” Students at Yate Academy improved on last year’s A level results. Individual successes included Jasmine Upton, who has won a place studying law at London South Bank University and Matthew Bailey, who received an A* in photography and is going to Plymouth University. In vocational subjects the

average grade was a distinction, which Mrs Ambrose described as a "fantastic achievement". Chipping Sodbury School head Katherine Turner praised the combination of subjects and breadth of qualifications the schools could offer by working together as a consortium. Ms Turner said she was ‘extremely proud’ of all her pupils’ achievements. A number of pupils achieved top grades, including Emma Vandeleur (3A), who is set to study history, politics and international relations at Royal Holloway London, Ethan Lloyd (3A) (Warwick University, history and sociology), Matthew Hellen (A*AB) (Birmingham University, physics with particle physics and cosmology) and Scarlett Hass (3B) (Lincoln University, sport). Brimsham Green School head Kim Garland said the sixth formers had worked with determination and made excellent progress, surpassing results from last year, with 30% of students achieving an A* or A.

Ms Garland said: “I do want to say well done to all students, including those who have gained A*/A and B grades across the board, in many cases studying four or five subjects, and who are now embarking on a range of higher education courses.” The eight pupils who studied more than three subjects and won university places are Beth Carriaga (2A*2A, C) who has won a Fulbright Scholarship to study at Brown University in Rhode Island, USA, Ella Bryant (2A*2B) (Oxford School of Drama, acting) Lucy Durham (A*3A) (Manchester, chemistry) Tom Groves (A*2A, B) (Sheffield, architecture), Molly MacFarlane (A*A, 2B) (Birmingham, English literature), Declan Martin (A 3B) (Surrey, criminology),

Jess Summers (3A, 2B) (London School of Economics, criminology), Harry Whitlow (3A*, B) (Birmingham, geography). Performance by pupils at the consortium in the Extended Project Qualification was described as “exceptional”, with 83% gaining an A* or A grade.

Call for 'crisis' meeting rejected after 1 CAMPAIGNERS have called for crisis talks after a planning blueprint for 105,000 new homes across the region was rejected. Planning inspectors Malcolm Rivett and Steven Lee told the local authorities for South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to take their Joint Spatial Plan back to the drawing board in August. The councils remain confident of finding a way forward but opponents of the strategic development plan said it “never should have got this far”. It has been claimed that the blueprint, which sets out where 105,000 houses should be built across the West of England by 2036, could potentially be held back for “many years”, and the target for new homes could go up to 116,000 in the meantime. Pressure group Thornbury Residents Against Poorly

Planned Development is calling on South Gloucestershire Council to stage an emergency meeting to consider the “crisis they have created”. Co-chairman Colin Gardner said in an open letter to South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage: “It is our opinion that there can be no recovery from such a damning conclusion and yet, incredulously, early statements from the councils talk about further research to be done and that the inspectors have not yet heard all of the evidence. “The councils are behaving like the knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, whose reaction to his complete dismemberment is that it’s only a scratch and that he should be allowed to fight on.” In a letter to the four councils, planning inspectors Malcolm Rivett and Steven Lee revealed “significant concerns” about

105,000-home blueprint is thrown out Planning inspectors Malcolm Rivett and Steven Lee told the West of England councils to take the plan back to the drawing board. approach" and it would be "premature" to call an extra council meeting to debate the future of the JSP before receiving a promised further letter from the inspectors, giving more detail about their decision. He said the four councils had been right to pursue the JSP rather than their own separate local plans, adding: "Not only does this make sense

given the close economic and social interdependencies of our region, but also in terms of demonstrating clear strategic leadership, to our local communities and government – particularly important when bidding for major infrastructure funding. "There will, I am sure, be a number of options to consider and I have already asked officers

to prepare a full briefing for me on these, looking at the issues both from the perspective of continuing to work in partnership with the other WoE UAs on a joint plan, but also to ensure the interests of South Gloucestershire residents are safeguarded." Claire Young, the Liberal Democrat leader in South Gloucestershire and councillor for Frampton Cotterell, said those who campaigned against the JSP had been “vindicated”. Her colleague, Chipping Sodbury & Cotswold Edge councillor Adrian Rush, said: “It never should have got this far. The inspectors wrote to South Gloucestershire and the other councils over a year ago to say that they had serious concerns about how the plan had been put together. I dread to think how much taxpayers’ money has been wasted on this fool’s errand.”

The JSP contains 12 strategic development locations, including Thornbury, Charfield, Buckover, Yate and Coalpit Heath, but the inspectors were not convinced the four councils had considered “reasonable alternatives”. Responding to the inspectors' initial letter, the authorities said they noted that Mr Rivett and Mr Lee had not ruled out any of the individual proposed strategic development locations. The Home Builders Federation said the withdrawal of the plan would lead to “further delays and yet more uncertainty”, potentially for “many years". In an open letter to the four councils, Campaign to Protect Rural England Avonside chair David Worskett urged them not to “tinker with the deeply flawed, out of date, JSP”. MP's view: Page 39.

Campaign to save place where disable A YATE family is calling on South Gloucestershire Council to save a school's specialist centre, which enables their disabled child to learn alongside mainstream pupils. Tracy and David Brock joined other parents at a demonstration protesting against a proposal to close the resource base at Emersons Green Primary School, which caters for 12 children aged from 4 to 11 with physical disabilities or visual impairment, giving them extra support while they have lessons and play with other children. Parents were told at the end of last term by head teacher Karl Hemmings that a council review of special needs and disability provision in the area proposed "phasing out" the resource base, closing it after the final intake of pupils had moved on to secondary school. More than 6,100 people have signed a petition on the Change. uk website calling on South

Gloucestershire Council not to close the site. Tracy and David's daughter Amber, 5, travels to the school each day. She has dystonia, a muscle condition which means she can't flex her arms and affects her muscle strength. can't sit up, walk, feed or go to the toilet by herself. Tracy said: "She's very intelligent, so she doesn't belong in a special needs setting. She needs support from a teaching assistant, somebody that helps her out at lunchtime. "She's absolutely thrived in her first year here, she loves everybody and has made great friends. "Mr Hemmings said 'Amber is perfect for my school' - it was the first time someone said 'we want her'. "Everybody loves her and they have been so supportive – it's just a great school. It was a massive struggle with the council to get her in here."

Also at the protest was Kristy Hooper, of Winterbourne Down, whose daughter Lily-Grace, 10, has mild cerebral palsy and visual impairment. She has been attending Emersons Green for three and a half years. Kristy said: "She has absolutely thrived – it's been an incredible experience. It's the closest provision and it's perfect for Lily-Grace – there's Braille on every door and it's all on one level. Lily-Grace said: "I think our school is great – I don't think it should close down. The children starting in reception are going to need it." A report to the council's schools forum in July said that, while the Emersons Green resource base had the most local catchment of pupils, with children travelling two miles on average to use it, it also had the second-highest cost per pupil in the area, at just under £37,000 per pupil per year.

A council spokesperson said the authority needed to make changes in provision "in terms of level and types of places and geographic location". The review, which will go out to public consultation in October, would increase the number of places for children with special educational needs and disabilities across the district by around 18, the spokesperson added, with some places moved closer to where families that need them live. The spokesperson said: “Following the initial discussions with the Schools Forum and in particular with Emersons Green Primary School, we acknowledge that there has been some anxiety caused on hearing about some elements of the report. While we stress that none of the current proposals will impact children who currently use the Emersons Green Resource Base, nor those who are due to start in September, we are

Consultation over access centre A CONSULTATION will take place over provision for pupils who go to the access centre at Chipping Sodbury School. The access centre is a specialist unit for children who have autism, which currently has 12 pupils, sharing a site with the mainstream secondary school. As part of a review of provision for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities it is being proposed that it could become a resource base instead, with an increase in places from 10 to 15. At an access centre the majority of children will have complex learning needs and may not be able to take part in any mainstream lessons. At a resource base, pupils will access some mainstream lessons with specialist support. At both types of provision children can be helped by other specialist services and their schoolwork can be tailored to meet their needs. The proposal to change the Chipping Sodbury access unit into a resource base has come out of the same review for South Gloucestershire Council which has led to the recommendation that Emersons Green resource base is closed. The council is considering whether there is enough SEND provision to meet requirements now and in the future. The council’s main findings noted that the most appropriate provision for pupils on the autism spectrum who are unable to access a mainstream curriculum would be a specialist school, for example Pegasus School, rather than an access centre such as the one at Chipping Sodbury. The review also identified a need for more provision for ages 16 and above, in early years and primary, and particularly in the North of the area where there are no resource bases. A council spokesperson said there was a "range of recommendations for discussion".

Sportive succeeds despite the weather ORGANISERS of this year's Sodbury Sportive say it was a stunning success, despite weather which disrupted much of the country. The cycle race raises money for charity All Chipping In and attracts hundreds of riders every year. Charity head Bill Bennett said the poor weather on the weekend of August 10-11 threatened to derail the event. He said: “It was a very closerun thing. “We have to erect a number of marquees and temporary structures on the Chipping Sodbury Ridings to accommodate the hundreds of riders and their families, the food, the entertainment, and the many visiting organisations but on Saturday the winds defeated us and we had to take down everything we’d already put up – it would have all blown away.” But an army of volunteers worked through the early hours

of the Sunday morning, under artificial light, to get the event ready in time. Bill said: “As soon as the wind dropped sufficiently, we were working under lights to prepare and dawn was a very welcome sight. The last details came together just before 7am, when the first competitors started to arrive.” Just an hour later hundreds of riders set off along the brand-

new routes taking them through some of the region's most beautiful countryside. It takes an army of volunteers to pull the Sportive together and Bill said their help was vital in making sure this year’s Sportive ran so well. He said: “With literally hundreds of miles of routes to mark out and so many entrants to look after and feed, the teams that make it all happen are very

important to me. That’s what All Chipping In is about”. Bill said the help provided by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club and the Inner Wheel, as well as many other volunteers and helpers, had been invaluable. He said: “Every detail has to be good, from the car parking to the pasty cooking, and I’m so proud of the people who give their time and effort to support our good causes”. Every penny raised by the Sportive goes to charity and even the spare food is donated to the local foodbank, and this year's event is expected to have raised thousands of pounds once everything has been counted up. Bill said: “I know some riders got wet this year but the event went ahead and was one of the best ever – just not quite as good as what we’ve already started to plan for 2020!" Tesco changes leave art group in limbo

AN art group for home-educated children is facing an uncertain future after the rent-free room it used at Yate’s Tesco Extra was withdrawn. The group, which has up to 15 children taking part with their parents, was given a month’s notice that the room would no longer be available. Parent and grandparent Dawn Hares is passionate about the group. She said: “Many of the children in the art group have had bad experiences at school with bullying and have been left with anxiety. My daughter has selective mutism, so doesn't speak, but since joining the group she talks and mixes happily with the others in group. My son has brain damage, and seeing the children each week has also benefited him as well.” Dawn’s granddaughter is also in the group. Dawn said: “She has been badly burnt on her face, arms,

The art group met in a room at Tesco Extra in Yate neck and hands and could not face school due to bullying and children commenting and pointing – she has found the group a safe place where she is not called a freak, all the children there just accept her as Evie.” Parents were told by Tesco that part of the store has been sold to the Arcadia Group, which

is responsible for brands such as Top Shop and Wallis, and that consequently there was a reorganisation underway. In a statement, a Tesco spokesperson said: “During a period when there was some spare floor space at our Yate Extra store, colleagues decided to use it to create a temporary

community room to help local charities and community groups in the area. “That spare space is now being taken up with new in-store concessions from September. Our store community champion is working to assist groups that used the temporary community room and has offered the use of the store’s training room when it is not booked for store meetings.” The community champion is hoping to offer the training room one afternoon a week but hasn’t been able to confirm this. In the meantime, parents have been looking for another venue, but say their efforts have proved fruitless. Dawn said: “The cheapest we found was £10 an hour with £50 deposit. We would also have to have our own insurance and because it's an art group for children at least two of the mums would have to be a DBS check.”

Kebab van approved at community centre A KEBAB van at a Yate community centre has been granted permission, despite objections from some residents and councillors. The business, called Memo/ Breakfast/Kebab, will be parked at the rear of the Centre car park in Shire Way after receiving approval from South Gloucestershire Council’s licensing sub-committee. Seven neighbours and Dodington Parish Council opposed the application by Metin Oz, citing fears of late-night noise and antisocial behaviour. One resident told the hearing on August 27 that it was “a disgrace it is even being considered”. But the panel gave the van a one-year licence after Bob Munro, treasurer of Shire Way Community Association, which runs the centre, said it would trade only during the hours the building was open to the public and that they would “pull the

plug on it instantly” if it caused problems. The van will open at 7am daily and shut at 11pm Mondays to Thursdays, midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 10pm on Sundays. Dodington ward councillor Louise Harris told the meeting: “There are already six takeaway premises in the vicinity around Abbotswood. “In the past, the club has said it would put security on the gates but this has not happened.” One woman who lives nearby told members she did not want to see extra traffic driving to the community centre when there had been "an increase in speeders, especially motorcycles, using this route from Shire Way down to the dual carriageway as a racetrack". Another neighbour said residents would be “inundated” with the smell of fast-food. He added: “That centre is turning into a pub, which was

The entrance to the car park never the original intention. “There will be rubbish left all over the road from people eating a kebab as they walk home.” But Mr Munro said: “The car park has 19 CCTV cameras monitored by an external company. If anyone ventures in there, I get called. “There will be no generator, as the van will be plugged into our building and Mr Oz can use our toilets and facilities. “Our kitchen was closed last year and we did takeaways, so

there will be no extra smells from cooking than were there before, and in fact there will be less.” He said a steward patrolled the car park at weekends and that the centre’s staff would be responsible for locking the gates. “We have decided to allow the kebab van because one of the biggest criticisms is that there is no food facility, so there is a demand for this. Yate café wins prestigious award A CAFE next to Yate’s Kingsgate Park has been voted the cream of the crop. The Vintage Birdcage Cakery and Café won the title of the Best Café in Gloucestershire in the England Business Awards. It was voted in by members of the public over dozens of competitors. Owner and founder Nicole Jones said winning was "overwhelming", adding: "It still doesn’t feel real – the team are completely and utterly honoured to have even been even up for nomination. Just think how many cafes are in Yate and Chipping Sodbury, let alone the whole of Gloucestershire!” Nicole believes that the secret of their success is making everything on-site. She said: "It does cause a lot of stress making our own cakes but people come from far and wide to purchase our sweet treats...that’s what makes us stand out and I don’t want to

Nicole Jones of the Vintage Birdcage Cakery and Café. ever lose that.” Nine years ago, Nicole was a parent who made cakes for PTA events at her children’s primary school. On one occasion she offered what she didn’t sell to a café in Wickwar, and they were so popular that the café asked

to stock them. When she was working at Hamptons Deli, she started to make cakes to sell, and people came into the shop just to buy her cheesecake and tiffins. More opportunities came in. Nicole supplied cakes for Coffee Beans, then picked up an

order for a deli in London, then another for two restaurants. She said: “Then the business grew from my kitchen at home, and the stock ended up taking over the family dining room." After initially moving to a unit in Frampton Cotterell, Nicole moved to Grooms House at Stanshawes Court so that her business could grow. Four years later, her café employs 24 staff, including teenagers who work at weekends. Nicole’s mum and teenage children also work at the café. She said: “I’ve learnt how to run the business on the job. I’ve flown by the seat of my pants and learnt by my mistakes. I’m also very proud that I’ve never got in any debt. I’ve waited until I’ve had enough money to buy each piece of equipment outright. “There’s nothing more enjoyable than coming to work, being with a wonderful team of people and living my dream.”

Nursery is outstanding, says watchdog AN Ofsted inspection has found a nursery in Iron Acton to be outstanding in all areas. Tiddlypeeps nursery, which takes babies and children up to 4 years old, has 40 places available for each session and currently has 98 children on roll. The education watchdog visited the nursery, which was rated good at its last inspection three years ago, in July and its new report has upgraded Tidddlypeeps to the highest possible rating. Inspector Kelly Sunderland found the setting to be a "highly stimulating learning environment" with an "inspirational" owner and manager and an "awe-inspiring" approach to including children with special educational needs and disabilities. She said the nursery had an "exceptionally inclusive culture". Tiddlypeeps’ manager Sammie O’Neil said: “As a new manager, it was my main aim

time. Also, during a cooking activity, children weigh and measure ingredients and crack eggs with minimal help from staff.” It was noted that children also take part in regular yoga sessions, which encourages good mental health. Other practices that were singled out included mirrors that have been lowered so that all children can use them, and babies being seated at the

same height at mealtimes to encourage social interaction. All the children, including those who have English as an additional language or SEND, were found to make "exceptional progress" in their learning. The report concluded that the only area needing improvement was tracking, to gain a clearer idea of the progress children are making.

Staff encourage older children’s imaginative play and mathematical learning exceptionally well. “Both younger and older children show excellent independence skills. n STROUD AUCTION ROOMS

Collectors bid for scientific – and sharp – instruments MEDALS, scientific instruments, weapons and militaria vied for prominence at Stroud Auction Rooms' August sale. While many auctions are quiet during the height of summer, Stroud continues to be hugely successful, with countless bidders on the internet and phone as well as those who left bids on the book and turned up in the rooms. Top lots were a Large Best Model binocular microscope by Smith, Beck & Beck (pictured) in a fitted mahogany case with two further cases of accessories and lenses, which sold for £3,600; a Charles Collins Victorian brass binocular microscope in original fitted mahogany case with extra lenses and accessories (£2,100) and a Smith & Beck microscope No 404, in original fitted mahogany case with lenses and other accessories, and drawers below housing slides (£1,900). Hot on their heels was a North American Indian 19thC tomahawk peace pipe axe (pictured) which went under the hammer for £1,500. The vendor's family lived in Manitoba and brought it back to England in 1895, along with a Winchester gun sold at a previous Stroud Auctions sale. Among other top selling weapons was a cased Beretta 692 12 bore over and under ejector shotgun, with named matt locks and adjustable stock (£1,500). Medals were also hugely popular, with a collection assigned by one vendor totalling over £40,000. Cameras also made a good showing,

including a Rolliflex 2.8 F TLR with a 1:2.8. 80mm lens, together with a Rollei flash and various filters, selling for £650. Sale room manager Stuart Maule said: "Scientific instruments and cameras are the kind of items that many people may have tucked away but think are of little value. It is well worth bringing them into Stroud Auctions for a valuation: they may be pleasantly surprised. "Our continuing success selling medals has already resulted in some good entries for the November auction." The August sale also saw a good specialist toy section, with live steam engines and early die-cast cars doing particularly well. The next sale at Stroud Auction Rooms is on September 11-13 from 10am, when jewellery, silver, watches and clocks will be among the

specialist sections. Viewing will be on Tuesday, September 10 (10am-7pm) and from 9am on sale days. Meanwhile, with vinyl records still 'top of the pops', Stroud has a vinyl record valuation day with specialist valuer Steve on Wednesday, September 4 (8.30am-7pm). If you are planning to go to Frampton Country Fair on Sunday, September 8, call in to see Stroud Auctions' staff for a free G & T and a preview of items in upcoming sales. Judith repays cancer charity's help WHEN Judith Mee was diagnosed with skin cancer earlier this year she was helped by a charity's specialist nurse. Now Judith and her husband Ashley, from Iron Acton, have repaid Macmillan Cancer Support, raising more than £4,000 by undertaking a charity hike. Judith was diagnosed with a stage 2 melanoma back in January. She was referred to Southmead Hospital and seen within a week. At the appointment when she received her diagnosis she was introduced to a specialist skin cancer nurse, funded by Macmillan. Judith said: “She was able to take us off to a different room and spend time with us so we could process this news and its implications. She put us so much at ease, we felt we could ask anything we wanted. I can phone the skin cancer nurses at any time if I am worried about anything in between

Judith Mee and her husband Ashley have raised more than £4,400 for Macmillan Cancer Support my three monthly check-up appointments.” Judith had surgery including removal of her lymph nodes to see if the cancer had spread, fortunately, her lymph nodes were clear. She will now have regular check-ups for the next five years. This summer – around six months after her diagnosis -

Judith and Ashley took part in the Macmillan ‘Mighty Hike’ fundraiser in the Peak District, to give something back to the charity. Judith and Ashley, who are both 62, walked together as a team called the Meeanderers and although they were amongst the oldest of the 2,000 hikers they completed the 27.8-mile

challenge in 10 hours 37 minutes. They have raised more than £4,400 so far for Macmillan and donations can be made by searching for Judith Mee on justgiving.com. Judith and Ashley asked for donations instead of presents for their 40th wedding anniversary and Ashley's employer, Wessex Water, also donated from its community fund. Judith said 11 miles of the course were in torrential rain, which left them covered in mud. "But It was that sense of giving something back to Macmillan, our gratitude, that kept us going," she said. Judith said she has to take precautions in the sun and checks monthly for changes on her skin. But she said: "I feel incredibly lucky that in my case the cancer hasn’t spread and that I’ve had, and continue to receive, this brilliant support.”

n MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY

A wonderful opportunity

S

Julian and Jenifer Capper Silverhill School and Day Nursery

ILVERHILL School offers an education to children from 0 – 11. The aim of the school is to foster a love of learning and provide an opportunity for children to grow into wellrounded and empathetic young people who have an understanding of the world they live in and confidence and self-reliance. Our beautiful grounds provide a wonderful opportunity for the children to take their learning into the outdoor world and discover how their education has relevance to the world they live in. The basis of their core education is guided by the National Curriculum, but we choose to use this in conjunction with a cross-curricular approach, based on a termly theme. This gives the children the opportunity to develop their thinking and problem-solving skills and for their emotional maturity to grow as they consider in greater depth what each subject is offering.

The inclusion of French, Spanish, Latin, Forest School, Sport, Music, Debate, Dance and Drama gives the children an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the emotional world as well as providing opportunities for them to work together and develop their social and leadership skills. Their awareness of and gratitude towards the community in which they live is enhanced by visits to local homes for the elderly and running projects in school to support the elderly. Beyond this and with the full support of their parents the children are also actively supportive of an orphanage in India called Haven Home, with fund-raising and by sending out school items, such as Silverhill uniforms and classroom items. We look forward to welcoming you to our Open Morning. Julian and Jenifer Capper

Yate Academy gives a better chance of success

Isabel Ambrose Yate Academy

YATE Academy is a happy, energetic and welcoming all-inclusive 11-18 Academy with a thriving sixth form and a state-of-the-art building with exceptional facilities. It is an Academy where we are as passionate about developing our staff as we are about developing our students. We are a proud member of the Greenshaw Learning Trust, a ‘family’ of like-minded schools, that collaborate to provide mutual support, share their good practice and learn from each other, whilst retaining and developing their own distinctive character. At Yate Academy we have built our ethos on a strong set of core values which underpin everything that we do. Our aim is to give students at Yate Academy a Better Chance of Success than if they attended any other school in the country. Our values of Ambition, Excellence and Pride run through all aspects of school life. The Academy has undergone a rapid transformation in the last two years and is now in the top 4% of schools in the country for GCSE

outcomes. Our 2019 GCSE results have exceeded last year and we hope to be in the top 2% of schools this year. This success can be attributed to high quality teaching, disruption free classrooms and a focus on improving reading. We have also developed a high quality character education package for all students which gives them the opportunity to participate and excel in extra-curricular activities. These ‘wider experiences’ are what make our school a brilliant place to be. We aim to give students experiences they will remember for a lifetime, for example every year 7 who starts school with us are taken for an adventure residential during the first week of school. If you are a prospective parent or are a member of the community interested in what we are doing you are more than welcome to visit the Academy any day, any time, no appointment needed. Care at Yate homes among the country's best A SHELTERED housing scheme in Yate has been rated as ‘outstanding’ by the official watchdog. Care Quality Commission inspectors visited Cambrian Green Court, on Wellington Road, earlier this year and their report has just been published. The 60 apartments at Cambrian Green Court are known as 'extra care housing', accommodation for people over the age of 55 where personal care is also provided by a manager and their team. It is run by Housing 21, a notfor-profit provider of retirement and extra care housing. At the time of the inspection, 35 people were receiving help with personal hygiene and eating. The report found that staff were “kind, caring and compassionate” valuing the people in their care as individuals. The inspection examined five

areas: whether the service was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Cambrian Green Court achieved ‘good’ in the first two categories and ‘outstanding’ in the following three, with an overall ‘outstanding’ rating. The rating has placed it in the top 2% of care facilities countrywide. The CQC report said: “People received exceptional, personcentred care from the onset. Their wishes were understood and close relationships between people, staff and families had developed. "Family members told us the care their relatives received was exceptional and had far exceeded their expectations.” Cambrian Green Court housing and care manager Charlotte Rule said: “We are absolutely over the moon with this fabulous result. I am so proud of my hard-working team. It is great to have our passion for what we do recognised by the

Staff at Cambrian Green Court with a copy of the CQC report CQC. "I have no doubt that achieving ‘outstanding’ was all down to the team here at Cambrian Green Court and the high level of care and compassion they show towards our residents.” Housing 21 director of extra care Kris Peach said: “I am delighted to see Cambrian Green achieve an outstanding inspection report. To have three outstanding areas is a massive

achievement. “This rating means that people have had an exceptional experience of receiving care. "The court’s CQC report illustrates that the whole team does an incredible job of helping older people to live independently in a community setting, with the added benefit of personalised care and support.” You can find the full report online by searching for Cambrian Green Court at cqc.org.uk.

Community power can fight housing plans

Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice

27

WE’VE demonstrated community power fighting the housing plans, and I still need your help to keep up the fight. Over the last four years, as a community, we have been fighting against the West of England regional housing plan, which proposes thousands of new homes for Coalpit heath’s greenbelt, and over-development to the west of Yate. At times these poorly thought through plans, which do not have the necessary infrastructure attached have seemed unstoppable. Despite this, together as a community, we have: • Debated the regional plan in Parliament, laying out robust and technical arguments as to why the plan in its current form were flawed and lacked any real infrastructure improvements. • Raised local concerns at the very highest level in Government, helping to stop any support for parts of the housing plan and holding the Metro Mayor to

account for his commitments to us. • Supported residents and campaigners, including key local groups such as Iron Acton Parish Council, VALID and other groups, backing their freedom of information battle with the council. • Submitted robust technical submissions at every official consultation opportunity. • Conducted surveys of Yate and Coalpit Heath about the development, allowing us to prove overwhelming local opposition to the proposals. This campaign I have been leading against the housing proposals is delivering for our towns and villages. In the last couple of weeks, the independent planning inspectors, who are tasked with examining the ‘soundness’ of the plan, echoed the case I put forward in Parliament in 2017, that the designation of the housing locations has been flawed from the start. The inspectors will soon be detailing their concerns officially.

Things could then move fast. Therefore, in my role as the local MP, I have stepped up the pressure by writing in support of the inspector’s findings and urging them to not accept minor changes to the housing plan when they need to be torn up. At this critical time, we must continue this fight. We must also use our community’s passion and energy in another way: pressing on with our success with a seven-days-aweek service at the Yate MIU and getting the urgent care upgrade I have been calling for. And building the Yate Park and Ride, and getting on with Frampton bypasses after securing the cash to get it moving. Rebuilding Watermore Primary School, putting money into Frampton CofE, and investing more money into Iron Acton, Chipping Sodbury and delivering two new Primary Schools in Yate. We have demonstrated that community power can deliver. We can do it again, so thank you for your constituted support.

n NEWS A CHOIR is holding a special event to encourage men to give singing a try. Frampton Cotterell Male Voice Choir's first open rehearsal last year was described as an "astonishing success", with eight of those who came along deciding to join up. So the choir, which has been established for 95 years, is holding another one on September 20, and says no previous experience is needed. Conductor Tim Warren and all the members are keen to make the experience as positive as possible. Chris Simons, who joined after attending last year's event, said: “When I attended the open rehearsal, I was made genuinely welcome from the moment I walked in the room. Singing with the choir was just fantastic, with some great music to enjoy across a variety of repertoire. "It’s a great feeling making music with these guys – the songs make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck! The conductor was very friendly and enthusiastic, but also

Show a success – now food fest returns ORGANISERS of this year's South Gloucestershire Show say it was another success, with thousands of visitors coming through the gates. The show on the weekend of August 3 and 4 included several new areas. The NFU Country Fair and Livestock area enabled people to watch the judging of cattle, sheep and pigs in the ring and also offered the opportunity to learn about farming today. A pipe band contest ended with a massed finale and a dog zone run by Friends of South Gloucestershire Strays included competitions, agility and scent workshops. Old favourites including stunt bike rider Flyin’ Ryan and displays of birds of prey returned, along with car displays and a 4x4 driving course. For the second year Jessie May was the nominated charity, and its staff and volunteers raised awareness of the work they do providing a hospice at home service. It’s hoped that they will beat last year’s total which was £3,500. With the dust barely settled, the organisers' focus has now shifted to the South Gloucestershire Food and Drink Festival, which takes place on the lawns of the Bristol and Bath Science Park over the weekend of September 14 to 15 from 10am until 4pm

each day. The last festival in May attracted over 20,000 visitors. Entry to the festival is free, with the food featuring cuisines from around the world including everything from savoury snacks to sweet treats and cocktails. Live entertainment

is provided by local bands. Parking at the Science Park is free and the venue is also accessible via cycle-routes. For more information visit www. southglosfoodfest.co.uk.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Pioneering apprentice PCs

W

ITH the school holidays over, I’ve been reflecting on the exceptionally busy summer we’ve experienced. From the Extinction Rebellion protests that caused traffic mayhem in and around Bristol to wonderful events including Glastonbury, Pride and the Harbourside Festival, the police have worked really hard the last few months to keep our communities safe. I know officers will always go above and beyond to support such events and I want to say thank you to all those individuals and teams who have been involved for your hard work. I’m sure you would have also heard about our new Prime Minister’s promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers to make our streets safer. This is a commitment that I very much welcome. We’ve had to deal

with years of funding cuts and had to make £78 million worth of savings, all while protecting officer numbers wherever possible and dealing with increasingly more complex and serious crime. If the Prime Minister keeps his promise, it will ease the pressure on officers and teams in our area as well as improving outcomes for victims. Local people often say to me that they want to see more officers in their villages, towns and cities and an increase in numbers would reassure our communities and keep our streets feeling safe. Avon and Somerset Police is in a great position in terms of learning and development opportunities for new recruits, especially with the launch of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Accredited by the College of

Policing and launched this year, the PCDA is being rolled our across the country. Avon and Somerset Police is the first force in the South West to move its initial police learning to the PCDA, partnering with UWE to offer a rewarding learning experience to our new recruits as well as a starting salary of £20k. Apprentice officers will spend around three quarters of their time learning on the job and the rest studying or in the classroom, becoming familiar with the skills they need to do the job. This is a great opportunity for individuals to pursue a varied and interesting role as part of the force, while gaining a qualification at the same time. Local people deserve the best officers on our streets to keep us safe and the new apprenticeship prepares, trains and supports officers to deal with the complex

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens crimes they will face as part of their role. I also hope that the new training and the opportunity to gain a higher education qualification will encourage a wide range of people who might not have considered a career in policing to apply and make a difference to our communities.

Party Packages from £449* We also cater for weddings, wakes, christenings and conferences.

Merger secures foodbank's future YATE & Chipping Sodbury foodbank is to merge with the North Bristol Foodbank so that its future is secured. The project manager at Yate & Chipping Sodbury retired some months ago, and the vacancy hasn’t been filled. The merger will solve this problem and ensure that the work distributing emergency food will continue. The Yate & Chipping Sodbury project also includes foodbank outlets in Mangotsfield and Thornbury, which will continue to run as usual. The charities are part of the Trussell Trust network. Referral agencies are currently being updated and the merger was due to come into force form September. North Bristol Foodbank manager Matt Dobson said: “No one in North Bristol or South Gloucestershire should need a foodbank’s help and we want to see an end to local people needing emergency food at all. But more and more people are finding that their income simply won’t stretch to cover the basics like food. “We want to reassure people that the foodbank outlets will continue to be run by local people, for local people thanks to the generous support of our communities.” Between March 2018 to April 2019, the food banks combined handed out 7,402 three-day emergency food parcels to people in crisis, with 3,130 of these going to children. North Bristol Foodbank chair of trustees Stewart North said: "Foodbank outlets will continue to be open in Southmead, Horfield, Lockleaze, Filton, Patchway, Yate, Thornbury and Mangotsfield.”

Science in the library THIRTY children enjoyed attending the Fizz Pop Science Workshop in Chipping Sodbury Library. The event was one of several sessions held at the library in the High Street as part of South Gloucestershire Libraries' Space Chase Summer Reading Challenge. Chipping Sodbury Library is open and staffed by volunteers on Tuesdays from 9.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-4.30pm, Wednesdays 9.30am-6.30pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 9.30am-12.30pm. As well as all the usual borrowing facilities and three public PCs, you can return books borrowed in other South Gloucestershire libraries and have books which you have reserved online sent to Chipping Sodbury.

Website and helpline can improve your health PEOPLE in South Gloucestershire have a new and easy first point of contact for improving their health and well-being. The One You South Gloucestershire website provides up-todate tips and apps to help people make simple changes to improve overall health and well-being, including reducing alcohol intake and managing stress. There is also a quit smoking service, guidance on healthy eating and practical advice on how to work towards a healthy weight. This service can be accessed online at oneyou.southglos.gov.uk, with a telephone helpline open during office hours where a trained health advisor can help, on 01454 865337. Council cabinet member for adult and public health Ben Stokes said: “We have been offering many of these services for a few years, but this is the first time we have pulled them into a single resource allowing people to access information for themselves or speak to an adviser if they wish. "We recognise that many health conditions are linked, such as low physical activity and poor mental health, so by bringing these services together we can support our residents to make multiple and longlasting changes to improve their health.” One You South Gloucestershire is a free service for all adults over the age of 18 who are a South Gloucestershire resident or registered with a GP practice in South Gloucestershire. It is managed by South Gloucestershire Council and partners and funded by the council and the NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group.

Andy brings Adge Academy consultation to life COMEDIAN Andy Ford is taking audiences back to the days when the West Country broke out onto the national airwaves with a tribute to the original King of the Wurzels, the late Adge Cutler. Andy, well-known to panto audiences from his years at Bristol Hippodrome, brings his show Don’t Tell I, Tell ‘EE’, a brand new production of Adge’s songs and story, to Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on September 13. Adge's world of humour and yokel culture made him a pioneering regional comedy/folk performer, paving the way for the likes of Mike Harding, Jasper Carrot and Billy Connolly. Andy says the show is "presented as an Adge Cutler and the Wurzels show always would have been…. Adge and band on stage playing iconic singalong ditties, interspersed with comedy quips and West Country banter, all delivered in rip roaring style". For more details and tickets visit andyfordcomedian.com online.

GOVERNORS at Chipping Sodbury School are to consider feedback from a consultation on whether it should become an academy. The governing body has already voted to proceed with an application for academy status and wish to join the Athelstan Trust, a multi-academy trust which runs Malmesbury and Bradon Forest schools in Wiltshire and the Dean Academy in Gloucestershire. A consultation has been running for some months with a discussion evening for parents taking place in June and another one due to be held early in the autumn term. Chipping Sodbury school is one of only two secondary schools in South Gloucestershire which is still run by the local authority: the other is Brimsham Green. Academy status enables schools to be funded directly by government and access additional funds which local authorities usually retain to support all maintained schools. Head teacher Katherine Turner said the partnership would provide "excellent high quality development" for staff, improved outcomes for pupils and financial benefits, among other advantages. Chipping Sodbury is already a foundation school, which employs its own staff, and its buildings are owned by a trust and parents have been told this means academy status will not be "such a significant change”. Parents are invited to email comments or questions to academyconsultation@chippingsodburyschool.com or to write to the school direct.

Back in time for Tudor music THIS summer Acton Court drifted back to a time before cars, as Latteridge Road was closed for weeks for work on water pipes. The Tudor mansion at Iron Acton also lost water, electricity, phones and wi-fi at various points. But its next return to the past is more deliberate, as the site opens its doors for Heritage Open Days this month. Most of the tours are already booked but the grounds will be open for tea and cake on September 13-15, and tickets are still available for the showpiece event, a concert of Early Tudor Music for an Early Tudor House on the 15th, from 3pm. The concert by the group In Echo is based on the first book of printed music, which was published in 1501 in Venice. It contained 96 pieces by the greatest composers of the time, with sacred motets mixed with bawdy love songs. Taking to the stage first will be students from Bristol Conservatoire singing Latin texts. Tickets for the concert are available via www. actoncourt.com or by calling 01454 228224.

n MOTORING

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second-hand Style Let's twist again

R

EGULAR readers will recall that last month’s column ended with a dilemma – my old Lexus had unexpectedly started a terminal decline into bangerdom and I faced a decision about whether to spend a relative fortune fixing it ongoing or replace it. To compound matters, I had no concrete idea what to replace it with. I intended to look at Audi’s S4 or Jaguar’s XE S – rapid but otherwise stout four-door saloons. In the end the decision to replace the Lexus was taken, as all important ones are, with the input of Mrs C. Now, 99% of the time, my wife’s interest in cars barely registers above ‘apathetic’, but when a decision is required, she keeps surprising me with how catholic her tastes are. As I deliberated, she threw coupes into the mix, totally from left field. Hold on, coupes?! But you hate them, my love, you always have. Four doors good, two doors bad and so forth. By considering them my choice expanded exponentially, the shortlist growing longer and far more interesting. I called an old friend, who had a BMW 2 series coupe at his dealership. He was prepared to take the Lexus

as part exchange and throw in a discount, so that afternoon the family was down at the local BMW dealer at Cribbs to see if four could squeeze into what looked like a tiny little car. I wrote a while ago about how it seemed an oversight that I’d never owned a BMW, and that if I bought one it would have to come with their famous straight-6 cylinder petrol engine. Well the good news is that the 2 series coupe (essentially a 1 series in a pretty twodoor body) not only comes with that engine but it also comfortably fits four adults inside. As long as you are 6ft or less, the two back seats have plenty of room. This German Tardis even has a good-sized boot! Waving a notso-fond farewell to the Lexus, which always felt like a stop-gap car, I took ownership of a 64-plate Estoril-blue M235i. When new, this model was top of the 2 series range (before BMW launched the awesome M2). They then updated the engine a few years later and renamed the M235i the M240i. As a used purchase it makes a lot of sense, as our old friend depreciation works her savage magic on values.

So, after six weeks, I am deeply impressed with this car. It has been said that it is reminiscent of the small sporty 3 Series coupes from the 80s and early 90s, and I like that comparison. In a world where cars keep getting longer, wider and higher, this coupe rewinds the clock back to a time when vehicles were smaller and more nimble. That said, they never used to weigh this much – modern crash safety engineering means that it is nearly a ton and a half. BMW have done very well to disguise this, though: The steering is lightningquick and feels entirely analogue, the 8-speed auto gearbox seamless and super-quick to shift. The ride is unacceptably crashy on runflat tyres though, and as soon as they are worn out I’m replacing them with standard rubber and buying a space-saver wheel kit. If I was specifying this car new I’d opt for the manual gearbox, and with the money saved I’d include cruise control and heated seats. But otherwise, it is damn near perfect – 325bhp through the rear wheels and 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds were genuine supercar numbers less than 20 years ago. Today you can have all this performance with 31mpg and run-of-the-mill servicing costs into the bargain. Even the insurance came in around the same as the Lexus. So I’ve learnt three things since buying the BMW: 1) A small coupe needn’t be the compromise you assume it is. 2) Writing about cars and thinking I know about them only meant I couldn’t see the wood for the trees when it came to my purchase decision. 3) As I knew all along, my wife is right about most things. Except gherkins, which are delicious. BMW 2 Series M235i - expect to pay around £18,000 for a 64-plate model. Next month: Mazda MX-5

n RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Back to school, and some old favourites I’M always reminded in September of the end of the school holidays, when I could do all sorts of exciting things with my two sons. One of the things we used to do on a rainy day was to bake. So, my recipe this month is a favourite which we’d make together. Now in their thirties, they still enjoy these flapjacks, and so do their children. They’re easy to make and kids love them, both the making and the eating! It’s perfect for an after-school snack or to go in a lunch box. I know it’s got butter and sugar and golden syrup, so not super-healthy, but I have decreased these over the years. The oats provide slow-release energy, so you or your kids feel fuller for longer. Once you’ve had these flapjacks, I reckon you’ll never buy shop-made ones again.

good texture. Don’t be tempted to use only jumbo oats as they won’t hold together to make a flapjack you can serve. Here’s what you do:

Fantastic Flapjacks

Preheat the oven to 160C, 325F or gas mark 3 Grease a shallow 20x20cm (8 inch square) baking tin and line with greaseproof paper which has also been greased, or use non-stick baking paper (ungreased of course) I leave the paper slightly bigger than the tin to make it easier to take out. Put the butter, sugar and syrup in the saucepan. Using a wooden spoon, stir the ingredients in the pan over a low heat until just melted. Do not boil! Remove from the heat. Pour in both sorts of the oats and mix well.

Makes about 20, depending how big you like to cut them. Ingredients: Butter – 150g (5oz) Demerara Sugar – 75g (3oz) Golden syrup – 2 tbsp Rolled (Porridge) oats – 175g (6oz) Jumbo porridge oats – 50g (2oz) Note: Jumbo oats added to the ordinary porridge oats give a really

Put the mixture into the tin and press down, levelling off the top with a tablespoon. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes and check. The mixture should be golden brown all over. Jiggle the tin to see how squidgy the mix is. Remember the mixture will firm up as it cools. 20-25 mins will give you a chewy flapjack, cook for 5 mins more if you want a firmer texture. Leave in the tin for 10 mins before marking out the squares/slices. Do not cut through. Leave in the tin until completely cold and then you will be able to cut through and remove the flapjacks easily from the tin. Cook’s Tips: If liked, scatter pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds or nuts over the

top for extra fibre and crunch. You can also add 75g (3oz) raisins, blueberries or cranberries (fresh or dried) to count towards your 5-a-day. Add any dried fruit to the mixture before putting it in the tin. If scattered over the top they will burn. The flapjacks taste even better on the day after baking and will keep in an airtight tin for a few days, but the chances of them being left makes this unlikely! If you’re really strong, you can freeze them and just get them out as you need them. Also unlikely!

COMPANY director Charles Dowson is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats. He set off on the 950-mile journey on August 22 and was due to arrive at John O’Groats on September 1. The second night was spent in Wells before he cycled on north through North Somerset and Bristol. Charles is a director at both DIY Doctor, a home improvement website, and its building arm, Foundations Up Construction, which provides building services across Somerset, Bath and Bristol. The idea was conceived at the companies’ joint Christmas party last year when DIY Doctor master joiner Gervase Evans announced that he was going to

through with the challenge. Bike building and training began in earnest this year. Sadly, Gervase has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer so has had to drop out to receive treatment. He is responding well, and hopes to lead another challenge next year, but so close to the event, Charles decided to continue this year and is riding in aid of the charity Crisis UK, which works with

homeless people. His companies focus on helping people making their homes more comfortable, and he feels it is important to stop and consider people who don’t have a home at all. He said: “Every penny we raise will help make each gruelling mile a bit less painful.” Anyone who would like to donate can do so at: https:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ diydoctorfoundationsup

n PETER'S VISION

Changing fast

I

look forward to meeting! It’s a good time of year to remind all you parents & grandparents that eye checks for young eyes are highly recommended, at least once a year. It always surprises me to read that only around 25% of us take our children for eye checks (yes, I have seen all the young eyes in our house this month!) but 75% of us take our children for dental checks. In general most children can see well and normally. We do still see those who have just assumed that their blurry eyes are normal and that no one else sees any better. Until your children have an eye check it’s hard to be sure they’re seeing clearly. Of note are children who

GENERALLY think that we humans don't like change, but there are times when change happens whether we like it or not. The global political & economic scene is a great example here, but don’t worry, that’s the last time I mention politics. I would say that in general I’m happy embracing change. If you’ve read this blog before you probably know that I like new things - high tech equipment, the latest lighter, thinner & clearer lenses and particularly new glasses & sunglasses! Often the biggest change this time of year is back to school. We’ve no new schools in our house this year, but certainly new classes & new teachers for our three to

report words moving, jumbling or going blurry - these need careful assessment as glasses aren’t always the answer. Sometimes coloured tints or eye exercises are needed. Come and see us for a thorough assessment and advice if you or your child have any concerns, even if you’ve already had a sight test. One change I do enjoy is my transitions - glasses that darken in the sun. Being out and about more with my family they are definitely an easy option. Taking just one pair of glasses leaves a little more room in my rucksack for snacks too! I know glasses that change in the sun aren’t for all of you, but if you’d like to try them we offer you a love them or leave them exchange guarantee.

You & your family, however young, are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care and glasses - whether you like your lenses to change with the sun or not! To arrange an extended eye exam or frame style consultation for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi!

We look forward to seeing you soon!

n AROUND THE WI'S Chipping Sodbury WI LAST month I referred to being told that the WI was 'all about cakes, isn’t it'? This does seem to be the image that a number of people have and hopefully I am busting that myth. I was reading one of my husband's car club magazines and in the area round-up page it was talking about cakes and ice creams a number of times. Was there a mix-up in the publications or are we saying that times are certainly changing? The ladies of Chipping Sodbury WI and other local WIs joined us on our trip to the Three Choirs garden centre, yes filling up on cakes and lunch prior to our visit to the Three Choirs Vineyard. We enjoyed a tour around the vineyard and the wine production area, accompanied by a number of wine bottles so that we could sample their wares. It was rude not to, so in preparation a number of us took the step to avoid a drink-driving conviction by getting lifts to and from the coach pickup. There was no formal meeting in August but that did not stop us having a social evening. The committee prepared food and drink for all the members to enjoy and we were entertained by Mark Austen, the blind sailor, on his saxophone. He also entered into some banter about his adventures and on that particular day he had been sailing on a boat that was much narrower than his usual craft. As he said, his usual craft was 3 strides across this one was just 1 1/2 so as you can guess, he made one stride too many and ended up in the water. This did not deter him, he just bobbed up and down with his life vest on until he climbed back on board to continue his day. We will be back to our meetings

n NEWS on September 5 in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall at 7.30pm, when the speaker will be Sarah Harris on Marie Antoinette’s Guide To Farming. Apparently it is quite comical, so why not join us for an entertaining evening? Be part of an organisation that can, has and will continue to make a difference. If you wish to come on your own we will ensure that you will not stay on your own. Jeanette Oakley

Chipping Sodbury Morning Wi THE wonderful ladies of Chipping Sodbury Morning WI met together for their regular monthly meeting – however, monthly is a bit of a fallacy, because we meet up so often between our regular Institute meetings for a vast variety of activities, lunch, trips, craft, book clubs, walks, bowls, coffee mornings etc, that sometimes our feet hardly touch the ground! Although these various activities are very enjoyable, the highlight is always the institute monthly meeting, when it is great for all the ladies to catch up together. Our monthly meeting is always pretty laid back and happy, although there is always the serious side, when we discuss issues of concern, raise money for local charities, support national issues, etc. We have been lucky to have a lot of visitors to our WI over the past months and have subsequently welcomed quite a few new members of our WI. Many of these ladies who have come along have been brought by friends but also we like to think that a fair number have visited us as result of reading our reports in the Yate & Sodbury Voice.

This month, after a really hearty rendition of Jerusalem, we commenced our meeting with the usual business that was dealt with pretty efficiently by our president and secretary. We were delighted to learn that, following a vote, our chosen charity for this year would be Chipping Sodbury School Inclusion Unit. We were reminded of forthcoming events, including an outing to Clevedon for cream tea, a trip on the Avon Valley Railway, a guided walk followed by lunch, coffee morning, craft afternoon, regular book club and a meeting to discuss our proposed entry in the Hawkesbury Show. WI diaries for 2020 needed to be ordered and spring bulbs paid for. Following a break for coffee, we all reconvened to listen to one of our previous speakers, Linda Dowsett, who gave us a really hilarious talk on yet another topic, this time Love on the Nile. Her talk, based on a recent trip up the Nile, delighted us all and had us in fits of laughter. As well as giving really fantastic talks, Linda also raises thousands of pounds for Guide Dogs for the Blind and it was lovely to hear about the dogs she had helped fund and the glorious results when dogs were introduced to their new owners. The lives of people with absolutely no sight or very limited vision are absolutely transformed by the money which is raised to provide them with guide dogs. Linda was thanked for her talk and we all hope she is back soon, with another of her highly entertaining talks. If you would like to come along to one of our meetings, our next regular one is at the Old Grammar School on September 17, when speaker Adele Brown will talk about Tin Can Floral. Susan Tubey

Box will save lives DODINGTON Parish Council has installed a new community defibrillator to help save lives. The defibrillator has been installed in a yellow box on the wall of the Wishing Well pub on Wapley Road in Codrington, with the permission of landlord Mark Tobin. The parish council has now placed a public access defibrillator in each of its wards. The first was installed in June 2015 at its hall on the site of Raysfield School, Finch Road, Chipping Sodbury. Defibrillators are used to restart the heart of people who have gone in to cardiac arrest, helping keep them alive until they can be taken to hospital. The council was approached by a local parishioner, Hilary Turner, whose son had a sudden cardiac arrest. Hilary said: "Since our son collapsed in 2013 with a cardiac arrest, our daughter has had a diagnosis of catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia Knowing that defibrillators are in our community to provide help in saving someone's life means so much to our family.” The other community defibrillator is on Kelston Close in Yate, close to Abbotswood and Culverhill schools. When a person is in cardiac arrest the advice is to call 999 and start CPR. If a defibrillator is nearby the 999 call operator will provide a code to open the lockable cabinet and there instructions on how to use it without any training.

FOLLOWING hard on the heels of our very successful and major fundraising event, the Chipping Sodbury Classic Car Run, the Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club recently arranged for 64 elderly people from local residential homes and churches to have a visit by coach to Dobbies Garden Centre in Cirencester for a spell of shopping in the numerous outlets there rounded off with everyone enjoying a cream tea. Also the club was able to offer a local parent with a child with learning difficulties the opportunity to enjoy a welldeserved holiday by the sea and in fine weather at the Naish Holiday Village in New Milton. The club has arranged both of these annual events for some years. The club was very pleased to fund the purchase of eight sets of kit for the St John's Mead Primary School netball team and to contribute to local student Toby Conibear's expenses to represent Team Avon at the English Schools Track and Field Championships in

Our club President, John Wells, was privileged to be invited by Chipping Sodbury School to present the end of year certificates to students, recognising, inter alia, academic and sporting achievement and also to present the Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club community awards for endeavour. The club's youth committee has worked hard in supporting the school on several projects over the year and enjoys an excellent rapport with the school, as indeed it does with Brimsham Green School. Turning to the fun side of the club's activities, we have two teams in the annual Rotary District Boules competition. Yate's Alfie wins his debut race ALFIE Gendall has started his racing career as he means to go on, with a win in his first ever race. The 13-year-old from Yate competed in his first JASCAR (Junior American Stock Car Racing) race weekend on August 17-18 at the Cowdenbeath Racewall circuit in Scotland. The JASCAR race series was supporting the 2019 Saloon Stock Car Championship of the World race event in front of a large crowd, providing some fantastic racing in some very changeable and tricky conditions. Alfie's first race was on a dry track and on slicks, he made it to the front of the field and stayed there until the chequered flag. He said: "It felt amazing to win my first race. I was only hoping to get onto the podium during my first race weekend and was elated to come away with a win." Alfie went onto pick up

his second victory under the floodlights in the third race later that evening, and a second place finish in a very wet fifth race on the Sunday. His strong finishing in the first 5 races meant he started the final in pole position but a mechanical issue meant he had to retire early in the race. Despite this Alfie was pleased

with his achievements during the weekend. He said: "To come away from my first race weekend with two first places and a second place exceeded my expectations. "I have learnt a lot about racing in different track conditions and made some great new friends.

"I am now looking forward to the next race meeting at Lydden Hill in September. "I would like to thank my sponsors including Bristol Cameras, Pentax and Cleaner Carpets Bristol, as well as the JASCAR officials and my family, for making the long journey to Scotland worthwhile." JASCARs are built in the USA and are half scale NASCAR cars, powered by a 390cc Honda engine and are limited in the UK to 60mph. They are designed for girls and boys aged eight to sixteen and are a great introduction to motorsport with a full safety roll cage, adjustable suspension, disc brakes and a central driving position. Alfie is always looking for new sponsors to help him fund his racing: any company interested in having their logo or details on his car should email alfiegendallracing@gmail.com or find him on social media.

Tips to reduce backto-school stress NEW school, new classes, new teachers, new friendships, new routines: back-to-school time can see children, parents and carers getting very anxious. Fears about coping with changes and the stress of balancing daily commitments weigh heavily on everyone. Here are some tips to help: Plan ahead together: Start getting things ready for the new school year well ahead of time and plan new family routines together. Develop a sense of fun expectation. A schedule can help you and your children keep track. Talk to your child: Use age-appropriate words so they can express their own anxiety or worries. Offer loving reassurance that everything will settle down. Be supportive, saying openly that you care about their experiences and always want to hear about the bad as well as the good. Look after yourself: Children will pick up stress and anxiety from their parents. Consider your own physical and mental health and well-being. Relax. Give time and attention to people and things you love and care about. Stay Healthy: Ill-health and sick days can cause a lot of stress. A healthy diet helps growth and development, reduces sick days and improves academic results. Avoid tooth decay by reducing sugary drinks and snacks, including fruit juices and smoothies. Less sugar consumption will help control weight gain. Don’t forget your vaccinations: Get your flu, chickenpox, meningitis B jabs. Some are available free on the NHS: our pharmacy team can offer help with details. Abbotswood Pharmacy is your local resource for advice on minor ailments, all health conditions, medicines and NHS services. We are always here for you.

Ruth brings medals home to Yate AN athlete from Yate who had a kidney transplant 11 years ago has won a haul of medals this summer. Ruth Medcroft, 41, took part in the World Transplant Games last month, winning a silver medal in archery and high jump, and a bronze in race walking. In July, she won gold medals in the high jump and race walking, and a silver medal in archery at the British Transplant Games. Ruth had reflux on her kidneys as a child, a condition where urine travels backwards from the bladder to kidneys and they become damaged. As an adult, her health deteriorated and eventually she ended up on dialysis at Southmead Hospital where a renal nurse mentioned the British Transplant Games. Ruth set herself the goal of competing after her transplant. After a two year wait she received a new kidney and in 2009, less than a year after her

In 2015, Ruth won gold for race walking at the British Transplant Games and gained the top podium spot again in the same category at the World Transplant Games in Argentina. She also came away from that

event with a Team GB gold, and silver medals for the road race and 1500 metre running. At the 2017 World Transplant Games Ruth repeated these successes but with a bronze for the 1,500 metres. She counts herself lucky that her transplant doesn’t affect her

health as she stays fit. Ruth said: “I’m not on much medication and I don’t have to watch what I eat too much. I do get more tired. Before I had my transplant I would get home from work and have to go back to bed for an hour before doing anything. “There’s a strong family feeling in the transplant community. And part of it has been I’ve got a daughter and I’ve enjoyed running with her and keeping her fit. For me it’s about being outside in the fresh air and enjoying the fact that I can do it.” Ruth funds her competition entry fees herself and has been sponsored by Yate Rotary Club. She will be giving a talk during a dinner at the club on October 17. Any non-members interested in attending can contact David Picton on 07964 689156 or visit www. yaterotaryclub.co.uk for more details.

Tough start to life in the Prem for Yate YATE Town started life in the Southern League Premier Division South with a win and three defeats. The newly-promoted side opened their season with a 4-1 home defeat to Blackfield & Langley, their promotion rivals last season in Division One South. And the scoreline was a repeat of last season's title clincher, with Blackfield & Langley's Lerone Plummer going one better than April's match and scoring hat-trick this time around. Yate's goal came in the second half, a few minutes after Blackfield, then two goals up, were reduced to ten men on the hour when Adam Tomasso was shown a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Jack Twyman. Ollie Mehew got the goal from the spot after newcomer Spokes had been fouled by Josh Harfield. But the Bluebells followed that defeat with a thumping 4-0 win away at Taunton Town, with Spokes starting the scoring via a deflection after just two minutes and then firing a 35-yarder into the top corner in the second half. By that stage Nick Peare had already scored, heading in unmarked from a Spokes corner. Bath City loanee James Ollis then came off the bench to finish the scoring

Adam Forster preserved the clean sheet with several important saves. Yate were then brought back down to earth with a 3-0 defeat away to Poole Town, before turning their attention to the FA Cup and a home tie with Exmouth Town. The Devon side, who play in the South

West Peninsula League, were ahead twice, once in each half, with Ollie Mehew getting both of Yate's goals. The Bluebells were due to travel to Exmouth on September 3 for a replay, with an away trip to Highworth Town away in the First Qualifying Round on September 7 awaiting the winner.
