New Yate factory for uniform company brings jobs boost A COMPANY that designs and manufactures protective clothing for firefighters and other emergency services is expanding its workforce and taking on new premises in Yate.

Bristol Uniforms already has an international distribution centre on the Stover Trading

Estate. Now it will have 30 staff in 40,000 sq ft premises in Waverley Road on the Beeches Industrial Estate.

The firm is also recruiting new workers, particularly skilled sewing machinists. The extra facilities are needed due to a significant business expansion,

with increased demand from home and abroad for its highly specialised products.

Bristol Uniforms currently supplies fire and rescue services around the UK and in more than 110 other countries with its protective gear.

Deputy headteacher takes on role of acting head at Chipping Sodbury School ensure that the values and strengths the school currently possesses will continue into the future, whilst its weaknesses will also be rigorously addressed.

A NEW acting headteacher has taken over at Chipping Sodbury School to replace Gareth Millington.

Katherine Turner stepped up from her role as a deputy head at the school to fill the post from October 1.

Mr Millington said the change happened slightly earlier than expected as he decided to leave earlier than his original planned Christmas departure.

In a letter to parents and carers, he said: “Katherine is not only a superb teacher and leader with a great deal of experience, but also someone who will

under her leadership. She has a strong proven track record and is well respected throughout the education and wider community. We look forward to developing our longstanding working relationship further.”

Dr Mansfield said the governors were sad to lose a headteacher of the calibre of Mr Millington.

She said: “He has shown loyalty, complete dedication and total commitment to the school.

“His relentless drive to ensure the best outcomes for students of the school has been founded on his personal knowledge of all

our students and his wish to help them overcome difficulties and celebrate their successes.

“He has forged a staff team who can now move on from this foundation to further improve the outcomes for students while we continue to put a high priority on supporting those who need additional input to achieve their goals.

A NEW era has begun at Yate Academy after the school formally broke away from the Ridings’ Federation of Academies and joined the Greenshaw Learning Trust.

The start of the new academic year saw the official switch, with the school also adopting its shorter name after dropping the “international” description.

In the first bulletin to parents after the move to Greenshaw, the academy said: “With the change has come a huge opportunity to develop and grow as a community.

“The team here at Yate Academy has grown too so we have capacity to further support teachers to ensure that every day is an outstanding one, with students reaching our high standards and high expectations.

It is going to be a great year.”

The academy provides allthrough education for children from the age of three to 19, with a nursery, the Woodlands primary phase, secondary school and sixth form.

Greenshaw said the Department for Education had decided the academy should be “re-brokered” and transferred from the Ridings’ Federation into

a trust that could provide the support the school required.

It said it had been supporting the school, working closely with headteacher Paul Skipp and the leadership team, to help it ahead of the transfer.

Greenshaw chairman Mike Cooper said: "The values and ethos of Yate Academy match those of the Greenshaw Learning Trust and the trust has the experience and capacity to provide the support Yate needs.”

Two years ago, the academy was told by education watchdog Ofsted that it required improvement.

It came during a troubled time for the Ridings’ Federation, with which the Yate school had a nine-year association.

The federation had faced traumatic times due to financial problems, the loss of two consecutive short-lived chief executive principals and both its academies - Winterbourne as well as Yate - getting poor reports from Ofsted.

As well as the change for Yate, Winterbourne International Academy is now set to become part of the locally-based Olympus Academy Trust, probably in early 2018.

Major expansion in Yate for uniform company PROTECTIVE clothing company Bristol Uniforms has taken on new premises in Yate and will be recruiting more staff as part of a significant business expansion.

The company designs and manufactures clothing for firefighters, supplying fire and rescue services in the UK and in more than 110 other countries.

It has recently been awarded a major new contract to supply clothing and equipment for a centralised system open to all UK fire and rescue services.

Coupled with increased demand from overseas, it has prompted general expansion across all areas of the business.

Its new 40,000 sq ft premises will be in Waverley Road on the Beeches Industrial Estate, close to the company’s international distribution centre on the Stover Trading Estate.

A total of 30 staff will be based at the premises, which will house two new automatic cutting machines, as well as existing

machines transferred from its Staple Hill headquarters.

Meanwhile, the firm is also looking for more skilled sewing machinists to work in its existing production and repair centre at its HQ. Ian Mitchell, the joint managing director, said: “Demand for our highlyspecialised garments continues to grow and many more fire and rescue services are now accessing our cleaning and repair services.

“We’re really pleased to have the extra space at Waverley Road as by transferring our lay planning and cutting department, we will also be able to expand our production sewing line and Western Service Centre capability in Staple Hill.”

The company was founded in Bristol in 1801 and also supplies specialist personal protective equipment for other emergency services, including the police and ambulance service. It currently employs more than100 people.

MORE than 6,000 children in South Gloucestershire took part in this year’s summer reading challenge.

The annual event is run to encourage youngsters aged between four and 11 to carry on reading during the school holiday, with the help of their local library, including the Yate and Chipping Sodbury service.

The challenge involves children getting rewards each time they finish a book, the aim being to read six books borrowed from the library by the time the holiday ends.

Medals and certificates are then presented to those who successfully reach the target.

This year’s theme for the challenge was Animal Agents, which saw the young readers solving clues as well as reading their books.

Rachael Hunt, vicechairwoman of South Gloucestershire Council, said: “It’s outstanding that so many children joined Animal Agents

and kept reading at their local library this summer.

“Children’s reading can often dip during the long school holidays but taking part in the challenge helps them to develop their reading skills and confidence so they return to school ready to learn.”

This year’s event also involved 70 young people acting as volunteers to help children who took part in the challenge by listening to them talk about their books, as well as helping with activities in the library.

A number of children from the Yate area who were involved in the challenge were presented with medals and certificates by Councillor Hunt at Yate Library.

Rachel Hathaway, a parent from the town whose son reached the target, said: “My son is a reluctant reader, so the prospect of a medal at the end was really motivating for him and helped us to keep him going with reading over the holiday.”

Lunch is served at new Fairer funding system to club in Abbotswood give boost to Yate and Sodbury schools A NEW lunch club has opened in Abbotswood with the support of a grant from Yate Town Council.

The club is run by team vicar, the Rev Iain McFarlane, with Sue Harrison and members of the St Nicholas Family Centre.

The first meeting took place recently with lunches prepared by Pauline Wilson, who has served up many meals for the Baptist Lunch Club in Chipping Sodbury, and Yate councillor Sue Walker.

It will now meet every Monday from noon, except on bank holidays, with lunches cooked and served by a rota of volunteers.

Councillor Walker said: “The excellent lunch was enjoyed by all those who attended and proved to be a very sociable occasion. All are very welcome to attend, particularly the older members of the community.”

SCHOOLS in South Gloucestershire are set to receive a cash boost next year after Education Secretary Justine Greening confirmed the adoption of a new national fairer funding formula.

The district has traditionally been one of the least funded local authorities for secondary and primary schools in England and is among 40 local authorities that joined a national campaign for the introduction of a fairer funding method.

The average increase in funding for South Gloucestershire schools, once the formula is fully implemented, is estimated to be around 4.3 per cent.

Under the new formula, in 2019-20 all secondary schools will attract at least £4,800 per

pupil, while primary schools will get at least £3,500 per pupil.

Slightly smaller amounts per pupil will be allocated in 2018-19 before the full amounts come into force the following year.

Among notable increases will be a 13.4 per cent rise for Tyndale Primary in Yate and 6.6 per cent more for Yate Academy.

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall said: “As someone who has been educated in South Gloucestershire state schools, I am delighted that the previous situation where we have missed out has now been righted.”

Toby Savage, South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet member for schools, said: “We welcome the Government’s announcement of a proper fairer funding formula.

SIX intrepid members of Chipping Sodbury and Yate Rotary clubs abseiled more than 100ft down the side of Southmead Hospital’s Brunel Building to raise nearly £3,000 for a health appeal.

The men took on the challenge in aid of the hospital’s £2 million Prostate Cancer Care Appeal, which was set up to buy two surgical robots to meet the growing demand for prostate surgery.

Among the abseilers was John Berridge, the recently appointed

Surgical robotic unit.

Rotarians go over the edge for prostate cancer appeal president of Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club.

He said: ”Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and robotic surgery is more accurate, less invasive and reduces the length of stay in hospital.

“We decided this is a really worthwhile project to support because this cutting edge treatment will improve facilities for generations to come.”

The other team members were John Wells, Ian Joseph, Kevan Allington and Keith Pattison from Chipping Sodbury and Geoff Nener from the Yate club.

Orchestra to help music society celebrate anniversary THE Amadeus Orchestra returns to Chipping Sodbury Town Hall as part of anniversary celebrations.

It will perform Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, featuring Clare King on the clarinet, and two pieces by Handel - his Water Music and Arrival of the Queen of Sheba - at a concert on Tuesday, October 10.

The event marks the 70th anniversary of Chipping Sodbury Music Society, which has brought live music to the town over all those decades and built up an association with the Amadeus Orchestra since inviting it to perform in 2008 in St John the Baptist Church.

It has also organised visits to Wells Cathedral to hear the musicians play there. Having started in 1990, the Amadeus is one of the world's foremost training orchestras for young professionals and music students. Musicians who have trained with them have gone on to play in almost every major orchestra in the world.

Help for Closure for outstanding heroes Yate residential home seeks volunteers VOLUNTEERS are needed to help raise money for Help for Heroes during a collection at Yate’s Tesco store.

The charity has been invited to hold the collection to mark the charity’s tenth anniversary.

It will take place over the weekend of October 14 and 15, with people needed to collect money and act as team leader.

A COUNCIL-run care home in Yate for people with dementia has started to be decommissioned because the building does not meet modern day standards.

South Gloucestershire Council said the care provided and the overall rating of Woodleaze was rated as outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.

But the building itself was not of a standard to meet current requirements and could not provide the best quality of life and dignity for residents.

Members of the council’s Cabinet have approved the decommissioning process and said arrangements would now

be put in place for residents to transfer to more modern settings, with the remaining staff also supported through the next steps. Any new admissions to the home will also stop.

In 2010, the council agreed to an ‘in principle’ decision to decommission all eight of its care homes as part of a programme to give better support to older people. Six have already closed.

It said a new care home was due to open in Yate, near Woodleaze, and other stateof-the-art homes had already opened in other parts of South Gloucestershire.

n NEWS A NEW system of using libraries that offers extended opening hours was due to be introduced in Yate on October 2 - as Chipping Sodbury’s library prepared to become volunteerrun.

Yate library is one of eight in South Gloucestershire where technology has been installed so registered users can access services when the premises are unstaffed.

Upgraded membership cards will be issued to people who can browse, borrow and renew books and other materials or use the library for studying.

The system, called Open Access, was trialled at Bradley Stoke library before being rolled out to other libraries as part of a series of changes to the service.

South Gloucestershire Council had to save £500,000 within the library service and carried out a review to see how to achieve those cuts.

It led to the withdrawal of the mobile library and other changes, including Chipping Sodbury library becoming a volunteer-run facility, with the council continuing to fund the costs of the service and the training of volunteers.

Staffed hours were also cut the primary way of achieving the savings.

But Heather Goddard, the council’s Cabinet member for communities, said: “I am delighted that despite continued budgetary pressure on the council we have, working closely with the community, been able to develop a solution that maintains peoples’ access to books and other resources, while making a contribution to the savings that have had to be made.

Open Access will allow users to visit libraries from 7.30am8.30pm seven days a week, once they have undergone an induction to the system and accepted the terms and conditions linked to it.

Meanwhile, residents who formed a Friends of Chipping Sodbury Library group to save the facility will run the service from Saturday, October 7.

The first day of the new

system will include free tea, coffee and cake for visitors, balloons for children and the appearance of Gruffalo to cut a ribbon. The event will run from 10am-1pm.

Swimmers to dive back into Yate swimming pool after upgrade YATE swimming pool is set to reopen at the end of October after major refurbishment.

The main pool - and the learner pool - at the town’s leisure centre have been out of use since early April to allow the work to be carried out.

However, swimmers were provided with a temporary pool outside the building at the rear of the Kennedy Way car park from the start of the project so they could continue to take the plunge.

At 18x10 metres, it was thought to be one of the biggest temporary pools of its kind, holding 35,635 gallons of water.

The large number of people who use the leisure centre pools each week led to the novel

approach to provide alternative facilities so they didn’t miss out on leisure swimming and lessons.

Now the refurbished pools will be re-filled with water in early October before being tested and monitored by the building contractors.

The water will then be gradually heated before the pools re-open - slightly later than originally envisaged.

A spokesman for the centre thanked users for their “patience and continual support”.

The essential maintenance and refurbishment carried out included replacing pipework and installing environmentally friendly equipment which will secure the future sustainability of the pools.

Dance students take their bow on the West End stage FORTY children from the ages of ten to eighteen are to get the chance to perform at one of the iconic London theatres in October.

The Sharon Phillips School of Dancing, which has a base in Alveston, is taking part in the Young Performers show at Her Majesty's Theatre.

Sharon told the Voice: “It is a great opportunity to be able to give the children a chance to dance on a west end stage where Phantom of the Opera is staged.”

The girls have been rehearsing since April, performing two ballet dances and

one modern dance. The costumes have been ordered from America.

Big Issue founder gives Merlin staff tour of the House of Lords Staff from a Chipping Sodbury based housing charity have received a guided tour around the House of Lord’s from the founder of the Big Issue magazine.

Seven staff were given an all-access tour by Lord Bird.

The visit was a thank you for the team after they spent a week in the summer transforming the homelessness magazine’s Bristol

office.

Business Administration Apprentice Jasmine Newton said: “It was a really great day, we had so much fun. Lord Bird was brilliant; he told us about his life story, how he founded the Big Issue and became a Lord. We got to see around the House of Lords and the House of Commons and some of us even got to see Prime Minister’s Questions. It was such

an interesting day.”

A cross-bench peer appointed to the House of Lords in October 2015, Lord Bird told stories of working in the café at parliament when he was on the run from the police, of vendors past and present, and his own

experiences of homelessness and poverty.

Lord Bird said: “It was brilliant meeting the team from Merlin. It was a golden hour, I think we all thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Thrilling evening of drama pledged

by Court Players A THRILLER by Francis Durbridge will be staged by the Court Players during a three-night run in Rangeworthy’s Memorial Hall.

The production of A Touch of Danger follows the success of the group’s Blood Brothers and it’s sell-out performances of Panic Stations and Death in Character.

A traditional pantomime is also performed every year by the actors, who largely come from Rangeworthy, Chipping Sodbury, Yate and Wickwar.

The Court Players have entertained audiences for 55 years, putting on at least three productions a year.

Their latest drama runs from October 12-14, with curtain up at 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought by phoning Lin Lewis on 01454 321149.

A bucket collection and raffle at each performance will raise money for the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity.

Yate included in feasibility studies for major transport schemes FEASIBILITY studies costing £1.2 million will investigate major transport schemes across the West of England, including in Yate and Thornbury.

Council leaders and metro mayor Tim Bowles agreed the funding at a meeting of the West of England Combined Authority (WECA).

In South Gloucestershire, the two key areas are the A4174 Ring Road and Badminton Road (A432) coming south out of Yate and the A38 corridor.

These two routes comprise the spine of the transport system through and across South Gloucestershire.

The Yate study will investigate projects such as running Metrobus to the town, having better cycle facilities along Badminton Road and introducing a park and ride facility in the Badminton Road

area.

Other proposals include improving Yate railway station and building a Winterbourne/ Frampton Cotterell bypass.

The A38 corridor study will include looking at schemes such as extending the Metrobus to Thornbury, building a major cyclepath along the A38 to the town and establishing a park and ride facility somewhere along the route.

It will also consider the re-opening of Charfield railway station and improving the M5 at Junction 14 in Falfield.

Matthew Riddle, leader of South Gloucestershire Council. said: “The A38 and Yate corridors are under pressure and we need to build the infrastructure not only to alleviate current congestion, but to allow the residents of tomorrow to get from A to B.”

Yate mum thanked for fundraising efforts YATE mum Sarah Hitchings has been recognised for her fundraising efforts to help a little girl walk unaided.

Three-year-old Esme Hodge, known as Ezzy, recently flew to the United States with her family for surgery which it is hoped will let her walk for the first time without any help.

Ezzy, of Thornbury, was born 11 weeks early and spent six weeks in intensive care before being allowed home. She has cerebral palsy and was accepted for potential life changing surgery in St Louis.

Her family set out to raise £80,000 so the surgery could take place and achieved it in less than nine months, with Sarah raising a total of £5,621.

Her efforts were recognised when a award was presented to her at a gala ball.

Sarah said: “I have received certificates as a thank you before but to help Ezzy reach her £80000 target and to be given an award has made me so proud.”

Yate man Mark Austen has taken part in the Blind Fleet Racing World Championships. The British boats performed well, taking a hat-trick of golds.

n AROUND THE W.I Chipping Sodbury Morning W.I ONCE again the ladies of Chipping Sodbury Morning WI converged upon the Old Grammar School in Sodbury for their monthly meeting.

The break in August resulted in a much noisier meeting than usual whilst everyone caught up on their summer activities and holidays. The President welcomed everyone especially a visitor who hopefully will love us PUPILS are making the most of a new woodland tower and climbing equipment that has been installed in the grounds of Iron Acton Primary School.

Two years of planning, which involved the youngsters, came to fruition when the equipment was put in place - with the help of £10,000 from the Big Lotto Fund and £2,000 from local charity Acton Aid. Headteacher Mike Riches said: “We are very keen on using our outdoor space. We have a huge field with a forest schools area, growing area and pond which we use to support

enough to become a member.

Our speaker for the morning was Terry Merret Smith who spoke about ‘The Road to Dreamland’. We were presented with snippets of musical films made by MGM. Our journey started with a number of items staring Judy Garland including Wizard of Oz and Easter Parade which also starred Fred Astaire. We then watched clips from Merry Widow starring Fernando Lamas

and Lana Turner. Our speaker touched upon the colourful life both Lana Turner and Judy Garland led off screen.

Some of us then relived our youth by watching Howard Keel, Gene Kelly, Kathryn Grayson and Leslie Caron and were reminded of the happy times we had visiting the cinema. We were brought up to date with a snippet from a new film that our speaker described as a lusty tale about girls on a train called the ‘Harvey

Girls’.

We finished off with 14 scores from various musicals and the finale was Gene Kelly reminiscing about musicals made

by MGM accompanied by the music 'That is Entertainment.'

Next meeting will be held on 17 October 2017 at 10.00 am which will be our AGM – there will be no speaker but the meeting will be followed by our Autumn Lunch at The Squire.

Going up in the world - pupils enjoy new climbing equipment our curriculum. We have now improved it further with our climbing equipment.

“We are also very keen to challenge all children through their time at our school and have called this latest project 'developing a physical challenge at Iron Acton'.

“This has been very popular with parents and children

and a great thing to show to prospective parents.”

Families will be able to see the equipment at an open day at

the school on Tuesday, October 3, at 1.30pm. Parents who want to attend must register at the school office in advance.

n NEWS FAMILIES explored local green spaces on two wheels when they went on a bicycle safari.

The event was led by wildlife expert Ian McGuire, of Wild Owl TV, and after setting off from Yate Riverside took in the Shire Way area, Wapley Bushes, Yate Common and Kingsgate Park.

It was organised by the Joint Cycleway Group and was part of the Discover Dodington programme set up by Dodington Parish Council.

Councillor Paul Hulbert said: "It was great to see so many enthusiastic children and parents. This was the first bicycle safari we ran but I don't think it'll be the last.

“Ian gave us fascinating explanations of local wildlife at each place we stopped.”

Mr Hulbert said two members of South Gloucestershire Council’s road safety team supported the event and Yate Shopping Centre let the group use the Riverside car park to assemble and check the bikes over.

The Joint Cycleway Group, consisting of local council and cycling organisation members, lobbies for new and improved routes for cyclists and runs events to encourage cycling in the area.

New bus services take to the road BUS operator Stagecoach West has started new routes in South Gloucestershire that serve passengers in Yate, Chipping Sodbury and the surrounding area.

The expansion of its network has seen the introduction of service 622, which runs every 90 minutes between Cribbs Causeway and Chipping Sodbury, via Almondsbury, Tockington, Alveston, Thornbury, Tytherington and Yate.

Meanwhile, a new service 77 runs hourly between Thornbury and Bristol city centre, including stopping at Southmead Hospital, Bristol Parkway railway station and

Aztec West. The bus replaces the former local service 615.

Stagecoach said the new links joined existing services 60 and 62 to Gloucester, services 69 and 620 to Stroud and Bath and services 84, 85 and 86 around Yate.

The operator said it was running the new routes in conjunction with local authorities, including South Gloucestershire Council, and its expansion also saw the opening of a new North Bristol depot shared with South Gloucestershire Bus and Coach Company.

Some 35 new driving jobs were created as a result of the new services.

Chamber orchestra returns to Thornbury A CONCERT of popular classical music will be given in Thornbury by violinist Roger Huckle and members of the Bristol Ensemble.

The professional chamber orchestra will perform works by Mozart - including the Clarinet Quintet in A Major - as well as Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, two waltzes by Dvorak and two Nordic Melodies by Grieg.

Festival on lookout for new crib scenes PEOPLE may not have turned their thoughts to Christmas just yet, but organisers of this year’s Crib Festival have appealed for loans of nativity crib scenes for the event.

St John’s Nativity Crib Festival runs from the 27 November to 3 December and also features craft workshops for children, storytelling sessions and a café.

Organisers are calling on local people, schools and groups to get involved.

One of the co-coordinators of the Festival Steve Kerner said, “In previous years, we have been able to display over 150 crib scenes with many loaned to us for the week. If you have one, or know someone who has, we would like to borrow it but promise to take great care of it.”

The festival was launched by the Reverend Jane Kenchington as a celebration of the Nativity scene and has proved to be a popular event in the town’s calendar.

History of Women in Yate A NEW exhibition focusing on women in the Yate area in the 20th century opens on October 11.

With a rich industrial past, Yate provides many stories from its women. The area boasted large industrial factories such as Parnall's and Newman’s which hired many women from around the country, as well as encouraging people to migrate from overseas.

The women who worked in these industries were vital to factory work but also played a key role in the social life of the workplaces.

Working conditions feature heavily in the display. This is particularly revealing as not all women did administrative

jobs - some opted for roles considered more masculine, such as welding.

Within the area, women were also shop owners and pub landladies well before World War One. There are many cases of women being registered business owners, with some inheriting businesses and pubs from their late husbands.

Other aspects of women’s influence in the town are the social clubs of the young mothers who moved to the area, festivals, church groups and the increase of female activity within the local council as the 20th century progressed.

Hospitals, along with nursing, are also featured, while the free exhibition, which runs until the end of November, looks at how much or how little the lives of women have changed throughout the 100 years.

The display will further feature costume and key

artefacts linked to the history of women around the town.

Sixty years since Britannia air crash NEXT month marks the 60th anniversary of the Britannia air crash in Downend.

The 90-ton aircraft came down in Lincombe Woods, killing all 15 men on board. Homes in Overndale Road were damaged, but miraculously no on on the ground was killed.

The prototype airliner, G-ANCA, crashed as she was returning to her base at Filton following a test flight.

Ten years ago, Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council put up a memorial in the woods - now renamed Britannia Woods - and hundreds of people turned up to pay tribute to pilot Hugh Statham and his crew.

Garden fetes give residents a close encounter with wildlife RESIDENTS living near building sites in Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton have visited a series of free events which gave them a close encounter with local wildlife.

Three garden fetes were held by local housing association Merlin and its contractors Lovell in the villages to thank residents for their patience while the building work takes place.

Visitors saw hedgehogs, slow worms, toads, with face painting and cake on offer.

The first two fetes were in Coalpit Heath, with the final event taking place last week in Iron Acton, where 27 homes are being built in Algars Drive, Chilwood Close and Nibley Lane.

The last of the existing properties have just been demolished and the timber frames for the new homes have already started going up. Merlin is building 72 affordable homes on several sites

Merlin Customer Liaison Officer Sarah Durbin said: “It’s been great running the

garden fetes with Lovell; the kids have loved the bugs, bats and balloons. And hopefully we’ve given some of them the gardening bug with the planting workshops we’ve run at the

The new homes will be available to rent and to buy through shared ownership. Work is due to be completed in phases throughout 2018.

Fairy tale ballet to be screened in Thornbury

Challenges to be met by 2020 outlined in public health report THREE targets have been set by health chiefs to improve the lives of people in South Gloucestershire.

BY 2020, it is hoped to reduce by 20 per cent both the level of child poverty in the district and the gap in educational attainment between the more well off and the poorer children.

The third of the 2020 Challenges outlined by South Gloucestershire’s director of public health, Professor Mark Pietroni, in his annual report is to increase by 20 per cent the number of mothers who breastfeed.

Professor Pietroni said South Gloucestershire was generally a healthy place to live, with almost all data indicating better outcomes than the national and regional

averages.

But there was a clear link between people’s health and educational achievements and their income levels, so while poverty was lower in the district than in many other areas, those living with less had measurably poorer health.

The public health sector and other organisations, including South Gloucestershire Council, will work on achieving the three challenges.

The council said one example of supporting families in need was the ActivePlay scheme, which allowed lower income families or those with children with disabilities to get vouchers for their children to use the area’s sports and leisure facilities.

Families can be referred to

the scheme by health visitors, school nurses, children’s centre staff or the council’s 0-25 service.

Professor Pietroni said in his report: “The evidence is overwhelming that children who don’t have a good start in life have worse health and other outcomes when they get older.

“It is also very clear that the best value for money comes from interventions targeted at young children.

This is a case of being the right thing to do as well as the best way to spend public resources.

“In South Gloucestershire, by and large, our population outcomes are good. However, there are issues that we need to address, including the number of children living in poverty.”

Thornbury Picture House will show Matthew Bourne’s version of the fairy tale ballet that stars Dominic North and Hannah Vassallo.

Filmed at the Bristol Hippodrome in May 2013, the film can be seen in the Cossham Hall, Chapel Street, on Friday, October 13, at 7.30pm.

Time to celebrate!

I HOPE you have been able to enjoy the early autumn harvests as we have. We had a particularly good damson and apple crop this year. Enjoying the fruits of our labour is always nice. However, the credit for selecting, planting, nurturing & cultivating the fruit trees, goes entirely to someone else! I will add that I have pruned the odd branch off here and there

as I feel I should every autumn, so we have laboured a little before the harvest! It was nice to be able to share our crop with Dad, who as usual had planted a veg patch large enough for us all to share!

This month at Turners Opticians we have had a double celebration.

Both Nikki and Zoë joined us 10 years ago! The time has, as it often does, flown by. It was lovely to hear Nikki saying only the other day how much she enjoys working at Turners Opticians. We had an enjoyable meal out to celebrate, not that we need an excuse to head out for a bite to eat after work, but it was lovely as a team to thank them on behalf of our patients for the care, attention and

dedication both Nikki and Zoë bring to work. Over dinner Zoë said how she has loved being part of the Turners team, especially enjoying getting to know so many of our patients and seeing you year after year. So many of us have benefitted from their labour!

As autumn sets in, I have put away my summer mirror tint sunglasses and returned to my trusty polaroid’s when driving and cycling. The added glare the seasonal lowering of the sun in the sky brings is greatly offset by these super lenses. With a choice of three tint colours and far or near single focus lenses as well as multifocal options there is a lens in our collection for everyone!

The frame collection you can choose from has multiplied again.

It’s best not to look away for too long in our practice or suddenly you have two new collections to choose from! n NEWS THE River Frome has been the scene of a battle over the summer as volunteers try to check the advance of an invasive weed.

This action, organised by Frampton Cotterell Village Action, aims to reduce the amount of Himalayan Balsam along the River Frome. This invasive, non-native plant has no natural checks to its growth so it out competes native wildflowers and forms dense clumps which reduce biodiversity on the

shed or garage. Bicycles and power tools are valuables often stolen from outbuildings. Even ladders or hand tools could be used by a thief, so it’s important to make sure your shed, garage and gates are sturdy and have good quality locks.

Make sure your bike is identifiable by keeping a record of the serial number and permanently marking it with your postcode.

Always use a good quality bike lock attached to a ground anchor - even inside an outbuilding.

Permanently marking property makes it less attractive to thieves as it’s easier to identify as stolen. You can also record serial numbers on the secure national property database www. immobilise.com Joining Neighbourhood Watch is one of the

most effective things you can do to prevent burglary. Thieves avoid communities where people look out for one another and report suspicious incidents to police.

If you see or hear anything suspicious, please do report it. Even if we’re not able to attend right away, it could help us to target our patrols. If you think a crime is underway or a suspect is in the area, call 999 immediately; otherwise ring 101 straight away.

Battle continues against Himalayan Balsam riverbank.

It also increases the risk of riverbank erosion as it leaves large areas of bare soil when it dies back in the autumn. It is an annual plant which grows

from seed every year so the key to getting it under control is to prevent it from setting seed.

A group of volunteers have been going out to clear patches of balsam along the Frome from Cogmill down to Nightingale Bridge.

Phil Handy, who coordinates the group, said; “We’ve seen a marked improvement in areas we've tackled in previous years and, as we get areas under control, we’ve been able to spend more time reaching places which are less easily accessible.

Reinfestation is always possible but, by regular clearing, we can

stop it forming dense clumps.”

“We welcome anyone who wants to join one of our working parties which are a good way to get gentle exercise in friendly company while enjoying the natural world down by the river.”

“People walking along the Frome Valley Walkway can also help. The roots of himalayan balsam are very shallow so it’s easy to pull out, crush and pile up where it can rot down.”

Paralympian to take the plunge at Thornbury Arts Festival

SWIMMER Kate Grey, who just missed out on the medals in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, will be one of the star guests at the next Thornbury Arts Festival.

Kate, 28, competed internationally for many years, also winning silver and bronze medals at the IPC (International Paralympic Committee) world championships.

Illness meant she missed out on qualifying for the London 2012 Paralympic Games but it led to her move into the media and although she has since retired from the pool, she now works as a sports reporter, commentator and pundit.

Kate is from Thornbury and is a former pupil at the Castle School.

She lost her hand in an accident when she was two but it never stopped her enthusiasm for taking part in sport.

Kate went on to study at Bath University, where she also trained, and in 2010 was voted the university’s sports personality of the year.

At the 2018 arts festival next April, Kate will give a lunchtime talk about growing up with a disability, the highs and lows of being an elite athlete and switching into the world of broadcasting.

Another former Castle School student, Andy Clarke, has been booked to give an evening talk about his career as a producer, director, writer and broadcaster for television food series.

He has been involved in TV cookery shows for some ten years, including Saturday Kitchen Live and a number of James Martin programmes.

The arts festival runs from Friday, April 20, to Saturday, April 28, and as already reported in Thornbury Voice, will be launched by comedian Jeremy Hardy performing on the opening night.

A regular on The News Quiz on Radio 4, his other work on the station includes Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation, I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and You’ll Have Had Your Tea. Other festival highlights include a performance by the Birmingham Town Hall Gospel Choir, winners of the first Songs

of Praise Gospel Choir of the Year, and actor Rebecca Vaughan with her award winning drama Jane Eyre: an Autobiography.

The remaining programme is still being developed by festival organisers, who will announce other acts as they are booked.

Tickets will go on sale at a later date.

Comments prescribed as health leaders assess pharmacy services

PHARMACY services in South Gloucestershire are under the spotlight to find out if they meet the requirements of local people and whether there are any gaps to be filled.

Comments made by users will help in the development of a pharmaceutical needs assessment, which will consider demand for pharmacies and how they can be maintained and developed in the future.

The assessment will be used by the NHS to make decisions when applications are received for the opening of new pharmacies.

It will also provide information when the commissioning of other services is considered as they could be provided by community pharmacies.

Professor Mark Pietroni, South Gloucestershire’s director of public health, said: “Our pharmacies are an important part of the health service, not only for medication but also in providing valuable advice.”

He said there were several healthy living pharmacies now established in the district, which offered extra services such as support to quit smoking, and more pharmacies were working towards achieving that status.

Professor Pietroni said: “In addition, many pharmacies also offer routine vaccinations, which with the upcoming flu season helps to improve access and uptake of these vital services.”

Help for domestic abuse victims in South Glos NEW services to help the victims of domestic abuse in South Gloucestershire have been launched.

Provided by Next Link, they include safe houses for women with children, single women and men and women with complex needs.

Advisers on domestic and sexual violence are also available through outreach services, at Southmead Hospital’s A&E department and within the maternity service.

There is training for all GP surgeries in the district and a range of support, including a group work scheme, available.

Carol Metters, the chief executive of Next Link, said: “It is estimated that 6,000 victims experience domestic abuse in South Gloucestershire each year.

“Domestic violence remains a significant problem for many individuals. More than 290 South Gloucestershire residents were recognised as being ‘at high risk of serious harm or death’ from domestic violence in 2015.

“We know that victims who receive help do go on to have safe fulfilling lives. It is important that professionals and victims know what help there is available.”

Women are more likely to be abused, to report abuse and to be killed by their partners.

Reported figures show that in a random group of 16 mothers, there is likely to be one who experienced domestic abuse last year. For single mothers, it is one in four and for fathers, it is one in 24.

In England and Wales, two women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner, with domestic violence accounting for nearly a quarter of all violent crime. Some 30 per cent of domestic abuse starts during pregnancy.

On average, a woman will be assaulted by her partner or ex-partner 35 times before reporting it to the police and in nearly all incidents - 90 per cent - involving domestic abuse, children are in the same or adjoining room.

It is also reported that one in seven children and young people under the age of 18 will have lived with domestic violence at some point in their childhood.

Museum wants your memories of Concorde

DO you remember exactly where you were on November 26, 2003 when Concorde graced the skies for the final time?

People thronged the streets to see the aircraft as she flew in to land at Filton for the last time on that damp Wednesday afternoon.

Many living in our area have earlier memories of Concorde too: some worked on creating the iconic supersonic jet while others will recall famous flights.

Now the new museum being created at Filton to house Concorde Alpha Foxtrot is collecting local people's memories for an online ‘Concorde Memory Map’.

Recollections will also be added to the new museum’s digital archive – ensuring that they are preserved, ready to inspire the next generation of engineers.

The first 250 people to share their stories were invited to a preview event in August at which they took part in a photo

shoot, standing in the shape of Concorde as the Red Arrows flew overhead and captured images from the air. Guests were then invited into the museum’s new Concorde hangar to enjoy an exclusive preview of the museum, which is due to open later this year.

Volunteers have worked for many years to bring the museum to fruition. Their efforts, which have so far raised £17m towards the £19m project, were recognised this year when they were honoured with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Aerospace Bristol is appealing for further support to bridge the funding shortfall and help achieve its goals of preserving and restoring Bristol’s aviation heritage and inspiring the next generation of engineers.

Chairman of Aerospace Bristol, said: “Aerospace Bristol will celebrate the innovation and endeavour of those generations

who went before us and inspire young people to consider careers in science and technology. We are asking everyone who has a Concorde story, and shares our aim of keeping the spirit of Concorde alive, to please share their story with us and support

Audit of schools repor “vulnerable” financi ts al posit

A REVIEW of the organisation that runs Yate and Winterbourne international academies has resulted in a report describing its financial position as “vulnerable”.

The document published by South Gloucestershire’ s internal audit service said significant changes were now required to allow the separation of the two schools’ finances.

The Ridings’ Federation of Academies currently still has responsibility for the Winterbourne sites Yate and but the Yate academy - including the secondary school, primary phase and nursery - is set to transfer to the Greenshaw Learning Trust in September.

A request for the review the federation’s governance of and financial management was made by Ridings’ trustees after a financial notice to improve was issued by the Education Funding Agency in light of a potential £1 million deficit by the end of the current academic year.

More than 200,000 families across the country have successfully applied to take up the 30 hours free childcare already. This is good news the doubling of the previous entitlement of 15 hours free has been really warmly welcomed by the families that I have spoken to over the last few weeks.

I have heard stories of parents starting to spend more time

together at home with their children, reducing stress and improving family finances. The reform is worth up to £5,000 per year, per child, and has been possible by curbing pension relief for the highest earners, helping the families who put in the hours to do the best by their families.

This major investment in family life has been designed to improve the quality of life for people who are working hard and want to do the right thing; a better work life balance, greater flexibility and improved finances. Child of the 90s?

Play your part in cutting-edge research VOICE readers have responded enthusiastically to an appeal to contribute to one of the world’s biggest and longest-running health studies – Children of the 90s.

Based at the University of Bristol, the programme has been tracking the health and development of more than 14,000 families for more than 25 years.

Almost 4,000 young people have taken part in the latest stage of the research, called Focus@24+, volunteering for a series of cutting-edge tests, including blood pressure, liver and lung function checks.

Since we featured Children of the 90s in our September edition, a further 146 participants have booked or attended a Focus@24+ appointment – many of them saying that it was the Voice article which prompted them to get in touch.

Children of the 90s studies families with a child born in Bristol and the surrounding area between April 1991 and December 1992. It’s also known as the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, and is followed by scientists all over the world.

Researchers have used the data collected over the last 25 years to help answer important questions on key health issues, including asthma, childhood obesity, and dementia.

Now, with the Focus@24+ clinics drawing to a close this autumn, the Children of the 90s team is keen to hear from anyone who was born in or around the city in 1991/2 and would like to play their part in building an even more detailed picture of the health of their generation.

The team at Children of the 90s have opened clinic appointments throughout October, including in the evenings and at weekends. There are also new, shorter, two hour appointments available.

Time for a proper pudding

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury.

She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

NOW that Autumn is upon us I yearn for a warming pudding. This is one of my favourites featuring great seasonal English apples.

There are hundreds of varieties of apples, so why not experiment with a few new ones.

This recipe takes the homely apple tart to a different place. It’s like a French lemon tart, but with grated apples, so it’s a little bit healthier. It’s super for a supper party because it can be prepared in advance, or after pork Sunday roast. I’m not quite sure why it’s called Canterbury Tart, I like to think that maybe Chaucer’s Canterbury pilgrims feasted on it and of course Kent “the garden of England” is famous for its apples.

Canterbury Tart Ingredients: • 375 g good quality dessert pastry or short crust pastry if you prefer.

For the Filling: • 4 eggs, preferably free range • 225g (8oz) caster sugar

• Grated rind and juice of 2 lemons • 100g (4oz) unsalted butter • 2 large cooking apples quartered, cored and peeled (about 350g/12oz prepared weight) • 2 dessert apples(Cox or Braeburn) • 25 -50g (1-2oz) demerara sugar Here’s what you do: 1. Roll out and line a round flan tin about 28 x 4cm (11 x 11/2in) in the usual way, forming a small lip around the edge. Chill the tin for a further 30 minutes.

2. Pre-heat the oven to 200º C / 400º F / Gas mark 6. Put a heavy –based baking tin into the oven at the same time.

3. Meanwhile, prep the filling: first peel, quarter, core and thinly slice the dessert apples.

4. P ut in a bowl, cover with water and add a good squeeze of lemon to stop them going brown.

5. Peel the cooking apples, place whole in a medium bowl with water and lemon juice.

6. Melt the butter in a microwavable bowl in the microwave Medium for 1 min, stir. Repeat on 10 second bursts til the butter is melted. Leave to one side.

7. Then beat the eggs, caster sugar,

lemon rind and juice together in a large mixing bowl.

8. Stir in the warm, melted butter.

9. Remove the tart from the fridge, then coarsely grate the cooking apples directly into the base of your pastry.

10. Spread the lemon mixture over the apples. Level the surface with the back of a spoon and arrange the dessert apples around the outside edge, neatly overlapping. Sprinkle the slices with Demerara sugar.

11. B ake the tart in the pre-heated oven for about 40-50 minutes or until the centre feels firm to the touch and the apple slices are golden.

12. You can serve this at room temperature, but it’s even better served warm with either, homemade custard, single cream or ice cream. Heavenly!

Cook’s Tips The tart freezes well and can be frozen for up to a month without loosing flavor or texture. Thaw for about eight hours at room temperature. To reheat, put back into the metal flan tin and reheat on a pre-heated baking tray at 200C/400F/Gas mark 6 for 5-10 mins.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style Richard continues his investigation into the used Alternatively-Fuelled Vehicles (AFV) market.]

BMW i3, 2014 – present: The Emperor’s New Clothes BMW posits itself as “The Ultimate Driving Machine”, and for nearly ninety years their claim has been credible. You know what to expect from a BMW – smooth engines powering the rear wheels, sound build quality, sporty and often elegant styling that dates well and always a hefty price tag to match.

So how many of the traditional BMW characteristics does their mass-market electric offering the i3 fulfil? All but one, and I can’t understand why buyers don’t spot the problem from a hundred yards.

On the used market you choose between two models: the ‘BEV’ (Battery Electric Vehicle,

tested here) and the ‘REx’ (Range Extender). The REx comes with a 650cc two cylinder petrol engine, which acts as a generator for the battery rather than driving the wheels. My 33KWh BEV test model offers a real-world range of 110 miles; the lesser 22KWh only 80.

The REx broadly doubles these ranges, but uses two gallons of fuel in the process.

Inside, the i3 is a mix of interesting and frustrating. There’s plenty of light and space up front, and the dashboard consists of what looks like two iPads with an aircon unit stuck underneath.

The door and dash trim finish has been deliberately pared back to “demonstrate sustainability”; it looks cheap and nasty. My test model came with a T-bar sunroof, which is novel but of no practical use. Room in the back is limited to two, with access hampered by narrow and pointless ‘suicide’

doors. The boot is super-mini small, and under the bonnet there is room only for charge cables.

Things get better on the move – the i3 feels considerably quicker than the quoted 7 seconds to 60mph. Laughably narrow rear tyres struggled for grip at full throttle, but handling is typically excellent and borderline fun. The regenerative braking system is so powerful that you hardly need to use the brakes, just lift off the accelerator and the car slows dramatically. As with most AFVs, the i3 is incredibly simple to drive.

The gearbox is a column-mounted automatic selector, further decluttering the dashboard.

The i3 has proven reliable so far, and most are still in warranty having covered low mileages. The market for used i3’s is strong and shallow though, so prices remain high and BMW dealers hold most of the stock. Depreciation, whilst

heavy compared to a standard BMW, is nothing against the drop last month’s Nissan Leaf suffers.

So if you want a ‘bargain’ used i3, you will struggle. I suggest you wait for the new model to hit the showrooms in the next few months, as that usually pushes second hand prices down.

But before you take a test drive, think about booking an eye test first. Because to desire this car, you must overlook the gawky, poorly proportioned mess that BMW have foisted on us. Take those comical 19 inch bicycle wheels that wouldn’t look out of place on a pre-war Austin 7. Or the graceless “look-at-me” rear door and window styling; I cannot get past the way this car looks, which is like a cross between an old Audi A2 and a penny-farthing bicycle. BMW are already putting this battery technology into their standard cars, so one day the i3 may quietly fade away and I will rejoice. Because whether outside Waitrose in Chipping Sodbury or a Bavarian beer hall, the i3 looks ridiculous.

Barry's right on cue to help Jessie May

WORLD Snooker chairman Barry Hearn has been announced as the latest patron for Bristolbased charity Jessie May. After learning about the work of the charity and its nurses when World Snooker partnered Jessie May for the 2016/2017 snooker season, Barry decided to take the relationship further and become an official patron.

Jessie May, a hospice at home charity which cares for terminally ill children in Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, needs to raise around £1,400,000 every year to continue supporting children and their families.

As a patron Barry will help raise awareness for the cause as well as vital funds. He will also support charity events with the first being An Evening with Steve Davis and Barry Hearn on Thursday October 19 at Ashton Gate Stadium.The event will be

FOLLOWING back-to-back league victories, Sodbury were hoping for cup success too.

Unfortunately it was Cirencester who provided the running rugby while Sodbury served up dropped passes.

The leading tacklers were Pete Butcher and his second row partner Niall Kincaid. Butcher also carried the ball well and frequently; Phil Player also made

a notable attacking contribution but was later concussed.

Dan Bradley’s kicking from hand was superb as he punished Cirencester both in attack and from penalties. Jon Cook stroked over two penalties before half time as Sodbury actually enjoyed a 5-6 lead for five minutes.

The amount of penalties that Sodbury coughed up helped Cirencester produce two quick tries before half time.

Sodbury’s woes continued at the start of the second half: a

try was gifted after five missed tackles. Sodbury eventually rallied and started to string some phases together.

When Sodbury were awarded a scrum 5m out, Joe Horton, picked a surprisingly mazy path to the line. In scoring next to the posts, he made the conversion simple for Cook.

Despite all Sodbury's industry, the amount of penalties broke up the game as Cirencester took five kicks at goal.

Sodbury rallied once more and bludgeoned their way into the host’s 22. The eventual try was touched down by Captain Matt Cook, but it wasn’t enough to rescue the tie.

League campaign starts in impressive style CHIPPING Sodbury 15 - 7 Gloucester Spartans The early exchanges of this early season encounter went the way of Spartans as Sodbury conceded 3 rapid-fire penalties.

The intense nature of the early clashes led to some over-frank discussions up front leaving the referee with little option but to brandish a red card to a player from each side.

Spartans maintained their pressure on the Sodbury try line but were unable to cross it largely due to the tackling from Jon Cook, Lee Ralph and Phil Player. They were also stung by their own lack of discipline conceding penalties.

After Raffi Sheik had sparked a foray into Spartans territory, Sodbury claimed another penalty which Jon Cook stroked between the uprights for a 3-0 lead.

Spartans had some success out wide but Sodbury’s scrambling defence kept them at bay. Both teams went on to miss a shot at goal and to receive a yellow card each. This left the new coaching team of Harvey Skelton and Matt Dew plenty to sort out at half time.

The half time team talk seemed to have some effect as Sodbury’s effort began to have some cohesion. After James Bennett set in motion a wonderful sweeping move from 75metres out, rapid passes found Cook, who easily drew two defenders before feeding to Raffi, who cruised in to score.

After 60 minutes the Sods kicked a penalty for a line-out 15m from Spartans try line. They lost the ball but then ripped it free.

One brutal ruck found Jake Lewis and he scampered in for a try which Cook converted.

With the score at 15-0 Sodbury now had a bit of breathing space but they seemed to relax and kept infringing. From a penalty, Spartans found touch just 10m out and the resulting drives at the Sodbury try line had real venom. As the fatigue started to bite one tackle rode up and was deemed high enough to award a penalty try.

The game played on for another 10 minutes after the Spartans try but neither team could add anything to the scoreboard.

Fired up netballers in league action A netball team dedicated to getting players back into the game has taken on league action for the first time. Fired Up Netball is that takes it players from the Yate, Frampton, Coalpit Heath & Winterbourne area.

It is a club that is focused on the fun and social aspects of the game, but decided to support the Back to Netball Winter League.

Caroline Bain told The Voice about their first league match.

WE finally did it and joined the Back to Netball Winter League.

What a match it was, with all the coaching by Charlotte James starting to pay off.

The opening few minutes of the game we had to play with only 6 players due to the massive traffic jams, but we managed to hold it to 5-5 in the first quarter. Sarah-Jane Howe played brilliantly at GK and Lisa Moore was fantastic as GD whilst

also running around and keeping them out of the circle.

The second quarter was amazing, Hazel Howe our centre was all over the court and Alison Britton and Hayley Heley were hitting the net every time: 12 goals to us and only 4 to them so 17 – 9 up.

Mary Makepeace twisted her ankle in the second quarter but

being a little fighter, she came on and played the last 2 quarters with true determination at WA, chasing everything. Hannah Ringrow and Louise Adderley played tremendous defence at GD and WD - only 5 goals to the opposition and 8 for us; 25 – 14 at the end of the third quarter.

By the time the final whistle blew we had kept our lead,

winning 31-20.

We are a local, over 30’s only, netball club and it is purely for fun, exercise and meeting a bunch of like-minded ladies who enjoy the “social” aspect as much as the netball!

Now the darker and colder nights are creeping in we are training indoors on a Wednesday evening at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex 7:30pm – 8:30pm and at Fromeside on a Saturday morning on the outdoor court from 9:30am to 10:30am – then go for a cup of coffee at Campus Skateboard Park which is just around the corner.

Winning start for St Nicks

in their first eight games and were looking to progress up to fifth in the table with a win at Sodbury.

The first half started brightly with both teams closing down their opponents and retaining possession at every opportunity.

After a flowing move and a cross from the left Sodbury opened the scoring on 9 minutes when Jack Parker slotted home from close range.

Sam Burgess in the home goal pulled off two fine first half saves but the keepers were left largely untroubled for much of the half.

Sodbury had to be at their best to match a Cribbs side that had shown good form in their opening league encounters this season.

With half time approaching the referee decided that a Cribbs defender had handled in the area and awarded a spot kick.

The unfortunate defender was struck on the arm by the ball

following an attempted cross and the decision disappointed the away side.

After some discussion over who should take the kick Liam Pullen stepped up and confidently tucked the penalty away to give Sodbury a 2-0 advantage and a deserved half team lead.

Cribbs dominated possession for much of the second period.

Sodbury’s Steven Fitzpatrick limped off after 46 minutes to be replaced by Andrew Criddle for the rest of the second half.

Sodbury knuckled down and fought bravely but rarely threatened the Cribbs penalty area in a half with very few clear chances. It was only in the closing minutes that Sodbury managed to break out of defence and they looked the more likely team to add to the score line.

The 2-0 win moved the home side up into 10th place in the league.

Ellis Cooper (Green Shirt) in action St Nicholas U12 boys got off to a flying start to the season with a 3-1 win over Rockleaze Rangers.

St Nick’s dominated from start to finish and should have won by a greater margin but they found the Rockleaze keeper in fine form.

Kodey Knight eventually broke the deadlock to give St Nicks a 1-0 lead at the break. The second half started much as the first had ended with St Nicks in control but a rare attack from Rockleaze resulted in St Nicks giving away a free kick on the

edge of the area. A well-taken set piece levelled the score; however Matthew Puddy put St Nicks back in front just minutes later.

The rest of the game played out in much the same fashion before Haydn Frost rounded off the scoring with a third St. Nick’s goal.

St Nick’s dominated the game and played some flowing football with excellent passing and good individual skills. Ellis Cooper on his club debut capped a fine performance with the player of the match award.

Precious point after tough start to season for Yate YATE Town FC bounced back with a fighting 3-3 draw with Barnstaple Town following a heavy 5-0 defeat at AFC Totton the previous week.

After their first six matches Town had still to register a win, securing just three points from drawn matches with Kidlington, Mangotsfield and Barnstaple.

They face a hectic programme of both league and cup matches during October when leaders Bristol Manor Farm visit Lodge Road for a league cup tie, and fellow Gloucestershire clubs Cinderford Town and Shortwood United come to Yate in the league.

In what was a re-arranged fixture with Barnstaple Town both teams produced an exciting, seesawing 3-3 encounter. The match could not be described as a classic but the game was punctuated by some superb goals.

Yate opened strongly but the visitors took the lead in the 13th minute following their first

real attack. The home side only partially cleared a corner and the ball was whipped back into the box for Bill Hopcroft to score at the near post with a fine glancing header.

Ten minutes later Yate deservedly equalised when Brad Abraham showed typical tenacity to retain possession and crashed the ball into the net. Town then exerted more pressure and took the lead three minutes before the break with an excellent drive into

the far corner by Ben Brooks.

After the interval Yate were hit by a quick fire double from Jordan Charran. Six minutes after half time Barnstaple were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area and Charran sent a sublime free kick over the defensive wall into the top corner. Shortly afterwards the same player regained the lead for the visitors when he sent in a fierce drive which Harvey Rivers found too hot to handle and the

ball crept into the net.

Yate showed tremendous character and bounced back with their skipper Charlie Hitchings leading by example and heading in the equaliser with just six minutes left. Both sides had chances in a rousing finale and Yate thought they had secured a dramatic late win when they again put the ball into the net with the last touch of the match only for the effort to be disallowed for offside.

New team ready for season ahead TORMARTON YFC U18’s are preparing for the start of their season with the news that they have secured a team sponsor. The newly formed club kick off this month in division three of the Bristol U18 Combination league with the support of Unitech Services Group.

The U18’s will compete against sides such as Thornbury Town, Keynsham Town, Longwell Green and Nicholas Wanderers.

Their Manager Damian Frodsham is looking forward to competing in the league.

He said, “We are very excited about our new project in partnership with Tormarton Football Club. We believe it is important for their development that they can keep playing youth football against their peers.”

The new youth team at Tormarton has been formed as a result of a shortage of opportunities for boys aged under 18 in the local area.

Yate breeze to friendly win YATE Mens Hockey Club first team have kicked off their season with a friendly match against neighbouring rivals Bristol and West second team.

It was Yate who were the quickest to settle and they went ahead early with a penalty corner strike by Darren Ashley. Marcus Smith’s tireless running up front resulted in a superb goal after Domonic Chamber moved the ball quickly out of defence through the midfield to Smith who finished in style.

Bristol and West then hit back with a goal of their own following a strong right wing attack that wrong footed the Yate defence and left the home goalie Michael Edwards with little chance.

Yate immediately converted their fourth penalty corner with a deflection from Gareth Slater, and Marcus Smith added a second goal to see the sides turn around with Yate leading 4 to 1.

The second half saw Bristol and West match Yate more closely and with Yate experimenting with a “half court press” it invited Bristol and West to score after a fast left wing attack.

With Sam Patton back running the midfield, Yate closed out their stronger opponents and their final goal came from a flow of passes amongst the three Hatfields, father John and sons Miles and Oscar, with Miles finishing with a reverse stick shot.

There may have been a family inquest into the game that evening after Oscar missed an open goal created by his brother and father. Yate ran out 5 to 2 winners and started their season with a fine win.

Yate Hockey Club are looking to attract new players to the Men’s Women’s and Junior sections. Anyone interested can make contact via the club’s website.

Athletes take aim at target sprint final ATHLETES from around the country have competed in Yate at the Target Sprint National Final.

The event, held at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex was looking to crown the national champion for 2017.

Target Sprint was introduced to the UK nationally last year and has grown from strength to strength with over 70 Athletes from across the country qualifying and competing in the final.

Participants have to run 400 metres before shooting five targets with an air rifle. They then run another 400 metres and shoot five more targets before completing a final 400-metre run.

Junior Women National Champion, Katie Robbins, recorded the fastest female time of the day with 5mins 24secs.

Katie, a member of Sedgemoor Training is coached by Mark Lodge and is based at Yate Outdoor Training Complex.

Josh Snook also coached by Mark Lodge took the bronze in the Junior Mens National Final.

Both Athletes have only started shooting and being involved with Target Sprint for the last four months.
