May and June will see the return of major events in the lives of the town which have been cancelled or paired back through two years of lockdown, combined with extra celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Things will kick off with Good Times on the Pitch, four days of outdoor entertainment on a festival stage at Yate Town Football Club at the end

of May. Platinum Jubilee events including a special return for the Chipping Sodbury Big Lunch will take place over the first weekend of June, followed by the Chipping Sodbury Festival in the middle of the month, which will include the town's carnival.

June will then finish with the return of the Yate Rocks free festival in Kingsgate Park.

STORM OVERFLOWS – the facts THERE has been some misinformation in the media and political campaign material about Wessex Water “dumping raw sewage” in rivers.

Wessex Water does not dump sewage in rivers, the sea or anywhere else. What we have are storm overflows, which sometimes operate during intense rainfall and have minimal or no ecological impact.

Storm overflows are a legacy of the past. They have always been part of the UK’s sewerage network because most sewers carry both rainwater and foul sewage, and they protect properties from flooding.

Although overflows are permitted by the Environment Agency, we agree that they have no place in the 21st century.

So we have committed to progressively eliminate storm overflows – starting with those that discharge most frequently and those that have any environmental impact – and we are investing £3 million

every month to do this.

Within Wessex Water we have 1,289 licensed overflows so it will take time and significant investment to progressively eliminate them.

Climate change means we’re now getting more intense storms, affecting the frequency of overflow operations, so Government legislation must also change to stop housing developers and property owners continuing to connect surface water to combined sewers.

With more people enjoying rivers and lakes near them, including for swimming, it’s important to remember there will always be bacteria in the water. This can come from wildlife and agricultural run-off as well as regulated overflows and treated wastewater discharges.

Wessex Water’s full proposals on how it is tackling storm overflows through nature-based solutions, and also reducing the number of hours overflows are in use, can be found on our website.

A natural solution in South Gloucestershire CROMHALL Water Recycling Centre is home to a constructed wetland that provides sustainable sewage treatment, improving water quality within Tortworth Brook.

Wessex Water teamed up with Tortworth Estate, Bristol Avon Rivers Trust, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and the Environment Agency on the project, which uses 12 ‘cells’ on former farmland to act as filters for nutrients including phosphates.

Phosphates can lead to excessive algae growth, and they come

from various sources including urban run-off, agriculture and sewage from every household.

Traditionally, chemical dosing processes have been used to remove them, but this has a considerable carbon footprint as well as being very expensive.

The wetland at Cromhall is an example of our nature-based approach that delivers the same results in a sustainable manner. And it also creates an ideal habitat for birds, bats, invertebrates, dragonflies, amphibians and other wildlife.

Your questions answered Do storm overflows cause pollution?

Rarely. Only eight out of 444 waterbodies in our region are identified as not achieving good ecological status due to the impact of storm overflows.

Do you monitor storm overflows?

Yes, around 80% are monitored in our region and we have a programme in place to install monitoring equipment on them all by the end of 2023.

Why don’t you invest more profits to fix the problem?

We spend more than we receive through customer bills and this investment is tightly controlled by our regulators. Last year we made a profit of £68.8 million after tax and spent £274.6 million renewing and improving our assets, which equates to four times as much investment as profit.

Can customers help?

Yes, by only flushing the three Ps – paper, poo and pee – down the toilet.

Wet wipes and sanitary products don’t break down properly in our sewers and cause blockages, leading to overflow discharges.

Big names coming to Yate for major events YATE is set to play host to some big names from the comedy world and some top tribute bands in a series of outdoor shows.

Good Times on the Pitch will take place on a festival stage at Yate Town Football Club at the end of May. Tribute acts The Bootleg Beatles and ABBA Revival will play on May 26 and 27 respectively, while on the 28th P!NK by Vicky Jackson and Coldplay tribute Coldplace will both take to the stage.

On May 29 CBeebies stars Andy & The Oddsocks will perform a children's show before a comedy gala starring Jason Manford and Milton Jones in the evening.

Yate resident James Murden, who is on the organising committee, said: "I’ve lived in Yate my entire life and there is a fantastic range of live music events to choose from, but we think there’s room for a little

"We’ve worked really hard to bring world-class performers to Yate and we really feel we’ve got something for everyone."

Each night is being sold as separate ticketed event and James says the line-up includes "some of the finest tribute bands in the World, huge comedy stars and something for the youngsters".

New £2 Million Self Storage Facility Opens In Yate A new four hundred unit self storage facility has just opened in Yate. Used by the general public and by local and national businesses, the state of the art self storage facility is similar to those seen on TV programmes such as Storage Wars and Storage Hunters.

Preschool says it let parents down after critical inspection MANAGERS of a Chipping Sodbury pre-school playgroup say they are determined to put things right after education inspectors said it was "inadequate".

Ofsted inspectors visited Raysfield Pre-school Playgroup, which operates from Dodington Parish Hall in Finch Road, in early March and raised concerns over multiple issues, some of which they said "significantly compromise children's safety and welfare".

Their report rated the playgroup inadequate in all areas - quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.

Ofsted took enforcement action, issuing a legal notice to make improvements in 14 areas, from safety and security to the curriculum.

The preschool has 68 children aged one to four on its roll and was rated 'good' at its last inspection in 2018.

Inspectors Karen Allen and Lisa Large said the manager and staff "do not fulfil their roles and responsibilities to promote children's welfare", and the committee failed to monitor quality.

They also criticised recruitment, risk assessment and supervision of children.

The inspectors said: "The manager and staff do not always ensure that the entrance doors to the premises are secured when children are present. This means that individuals can access children without challenge from staff or children can leave unsupervised.

"Closed circuit television footage of children is taken home by managers and on occasion CCTV footage is viewed from home. This means that individuals outside of the nursery could have access to images and footage of children.

"Staff do not supervise children sufficiently to ensure their well-being. These weaknesses in safeguarding children significantly compromise children's safety and welfare."

The inspectors said that "most learning is incidental" at the preschool, with a curriculum that was "not well designed".

They said staff did not supervise children adequately at all times, adding: "When outdoors, staff do not notice that children push and fall off plastic crates onto each other until children start to cry.

"When toddlers hit each other trying to get to the books indoors, staff do not help children to understand what is expected of them.

"Staff sit with their backs to babies in high chairs who are eating their lunch while they tend to other children. These failures put children at risk of choking."

The inspectors stressed that staff "are friendly and demonstrate they are caring", adding: "Some children show they are happy and settled."

They also said children "have opportunities to sing songs, share books and listen to stories" and "enjoy being physically active indoors and outdoors".

Ofsted made a return visit after three weeks and said the preschool "had met some of the safeguarding and welfare actions but not others".

Mobile phone, CCTV and e-safety procedures had improved but there were still concerns over supervision and staff deployment.

In a statement the management committee told the Voice: "We accept the findings of the Ofsted report and are disappointed for letting our families down.

"We addressed the safeguarding concerns raised quickly and are determined to make this right.

"We are using this as an opportunity to review our practices and to get our preschool back to the high standard it was.

"We are working closely with Ofsted and the local authority to ensure we take all the appropriate actions needed to improve."

Reward doubled in new bid to find Barry's killers A REWARD for information about the killer or killers of Barry Rubery has been doubled to £20,000, 12 years after his death.

Charity Crimestoppers announced that the reward had been increased as a new documentary was broadcast on the unsolved murder of the 68-year-old Iron Acton resident.

Who Killed Barry Rubery? was screened on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.

It includes new interviews with Detective Chief Inspector Mark Almond, the senior investigating officer in the case, and Barry’s family, including his son Philip and daughter Julie.

A £10,000 reward was offered soon after Barry's death on April 28, 2010 but despite this and two arrests, no-one has ever been charged with his murder.

Police say they know he was killed after returning to his home at Crossing Cottage in Latteridge Road at about 10.45pm following a night out.

He was found in his porch at 8am the following day with his wrists and ankles tied, and had suffered fatal head injuries during a violent assault.

His home had been ransacked but apart from his Nokia 3310 phone and a set of keys, police say very little was taken, with cash,

jewellery and a safe left behind.

Detectives want to hear from anyone who: • Saw suspicious vehicles, particularly a Land Rover or black Mitsubishi L200 pickup, parked nearby • Was connected to the crime but has not come forward out of fear or previous loyalties.

• Is concerned over a change in a friend or relative's behaviour after the crime, or someone "showing a particular interest" in the investigation.

• Knows where the stolen property might be – it may also include a gold Masonic pocket watch, a Makita drill and an extension lead.

• Knows about trouble Mr Rubery was having at his yard, particularly from a group

Leaders row over extra new homes

SOUTH Gloucestershire could be forced to take 9,000 more homes than the Government thinks it should over the next two decades, its council leader has claimed.

Conservative Toby Savage told a council meeting in April that an initial version of the region’s housing blueprint indicated 37,000 homes would be earmarked in the district – almost a third more than the 28,000 that Whitehall calculations suggested were necessary.

Cllr Savage told the council’s cabinet: “I cannot in all good conscience agree to land our communities with unsustainable levels of new growth over the next 20 years.”

He criticised Labour Metro Mayor Dan Norris, who as head of the West of England Combined Authority is required to publish the spatial development strategy (SDS), a strategic vision setting out overall numbers and broad

distribution of housing, jobs, infrastructure and growth.

Cllr Savage said Mr Norris was “resistant” to meetings over the SDS and, as a result, the document and 12-week public consultation had been delayed.

In response, Mr Norris said afterwards it was the Government who had set the housing numbers and was demanding at least 105,000 new homes in the West of England over the next two decades.

Cllr Savage has previously criticised Mr Norris for a “mushroom farming approach” to preparing the SDS in “darkness and secrecy”, while the Weca mayor has accused the council leader of “living in a parallel universe” and having “delusions of grandeur”.

Cllr Savage told his cabinet on April 4: “It’s disappointing we are in a position where the decision on pushing on with an SDS has needed to be deferred because of a lack of preparedness and engagement that is a

true reflection of the words ‘engagement’ and ‘collaboration’ across the region, but this is where we find ourselves.

“The Weca mayor has been resistant to meetings of mayors and leaders to discuss the SDS. “While I’m happy we have now had a grand total of two meetings on this topic – two more than we’ve had in the last six months – it has ended up being too little, too late to meet the original timescale for the SDS." Mr Norris said afterwards: “It is the Conservative Government

that has demanded the West of England must build a minimum of 105,000 new homes over the next 20 years.

"It is the Government that has set exacting rules for this complex and highly expensive process.

“Conservative councillors angry at their own Conservative Government’s imposition of high housing numbers and facing difficult local elections in just over a year’s time are bound to wobble."

Street parties and festivals make June a big month FAMILIES are being invited to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at a street party in Chipping Sodbury.

The town’s Big Lunch event is returning after two years away and will mark the Queen’s 70th year on the throne with a street party in Broad Street on June 5, at the end of the jubilee bank holiday weekend.

It is one of a series of big events in Yate and Sodbury planned for June, including the Yate Rocks festival and Chipping Sodbury Festival.

The Big Jubilee Lunch promises to be "a traditional street party packed with free entertainment for all the family to enjoy".

People are being invited to bring their own picnics, tables and chairs to watch live bands including party band For the Record, Winterbourne Winds and 1940s trio The Cat’s Pyjamas, dancing from Winterbourne Border Morris, Bristol Samba Band and Stapleton School of Dancing.

Alexandra Dent and Sarah Todd, from the voluntary committee which organises the event, said: "Walkabout acts will entertain you on unicycles and with juggling and The Queen may even be making an appearance on roller skates!

"For the little ones there will be free face painting and a royally red, white and blue fancy dress competition and for the bakers among us, a cake competition fit for royalty will be judged by expert local chef Ann Murray.

“We are so excited for the Big Lunch to return this year!

“The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is a momentous national occasion and what better way to celebrate in Chipping Sodbury with the return of our popular, free community event.”

The event takes place from noon to 6pm.

Later in the month it will be Yate's turn to party as the Yate Rocks event returns on June 25 and 26 in Kingsgate Park.

The Saturday Yate Rocks…in the Park festival from midday to 8pm will feature music from local bands including Rose Bruford, Limited Edition, Beacon Rise, Longshots, Uncle Buck, Rugged Union, 51 Degrees and Dock Roc, performing alongside local dance groups including ROKH Dance, 5678 Dance, Burlesque Chair Dancing, Stapleton Dance Group, Redds Dance, Street Cred, plus other Clubs and Associations.

The event will feature music from local bands, dance displays from clubs and academies and a variety of stalls and attractions from crafts to a beer tent and bungee trampoline.

On Sunday from 10.30am-4.30pm Praise in the Park will see local churches providing an outdoor service followed by a relaxed picnic in the park and choir showcase.

Area prepares to welcome almost 200 refugees The Tour of Britain's journey through Winterbourne in 2014 was captured by Voice reader Kirstie Bidwell.

Tour of Britain returns CYCLE race the Tour of Britain will return to South Gloucestershire later this year.

The UK's premier elite race, which attracts some of the sport's biggest names, will pass through Chipping Sodbury and Yate on a looping course from Tewkesbury to Gloucester on Day Six, which will be on September 9.

More details about the race will be revealed nearer the time but the news has been welcomed by South Gloucestershire Council.

Leader Toby Savage said: "We are delighted that the Tour of Britain will be visiting South Gloucestershire in September for stage six of the race. The Tour presents an excellent way to showcase our beautiful area to its viewers as the cyclists pass through some of our towns, villages and countryside. The event will help bring local communities together as they spectate from their own neighbourhoods and hopefully provide an economic boost to local shops and businesses too.”

SOUTH Gloucestershire is welcoming refugees from the war in Ukraine, with almost 200 expected to come to the area.

People have been offering places to stay to families escaping from homes threatened by the Russian invasion.

A council spokesperson said that at the latest count, 198 refugees were expected to arrive in South Gloucestershire.

The council has set up a Ukraine crisis help and support page in the asylum and immigration section of its website.

It is making school places available for any children who arrive: a spokesperson said the authority was "preparing the relevant support to help them integrate into their new school environment".

The government is providing funding for councils of £10,500 per person to support provision of services for refugees.

Council leader Toby Savage said: "South Gloucestershire has always played its part in helping to support and to resettle people affected by conflict who have come to this country. Our thoughts are focused on the terrible events in Ukraine and of course we stand ready to play our role in resettling people forced to flee the war in that country.”

People are able to offer to host refugees under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, enabling them to become a named sponsor for Ukrainian nationals and their family members to come to the UK. But people trying to help refugees to the UK from Ukraine have described the visa arrangements as "shambolic" and "painfully slow".

'Devil is in the detail' for bike lane plans Cast members from Sodbury Vale Musical Comedy Club

Strike musical comes to stage A MUSICAL telling the tale of factory workers who took a stand for women's rights is coming to Chipping Sodbury.

Sodbury Vale Musical Comedy Club will bring Made in Dagenham, the tale of female Ford sewing machinists who went on strike in 1968 for recognition of their skilled status, inspiring the movement that led to the Equal Pay Act of 1970.

The story was made into a film in 2010 and later a hit musical.

A club spokesperson said: "This is an uplifting musical full of powerful songs along with some poignant ballads by David Arnold and Richard Thomas, a witty and emotional script written by Richard Bean showing us how far we have come for women’s equality but reminds us that the journey isn’t over yet."

The show will be at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall from May 26 to 28, with performances starting at 7.30pm and a Saturday Matinee at 2.30pm.

CHANGES to make the main road linking Yate to Bristol more cyclefriendly could meet a sticking point in Coalpit Heath.

The Voice reported last month on South Gloucestershire Council plans that would see the A432 Badminton Road get new cycle tracks, improved junctions and crossings fro Yate to the Wick Wick roundabout, where it meets the A4174 Avon Ring Road.

The council says the proposals will "build upon the Coalpit Heath to Nibley Lane cycleway", which is currently under construction.

But an online consultation meeting held in early April heard that one of the sticking points in the plans was what to do about improving cycle routes through Coalpit Heath, as Badminton Road was not wide enough to accommodate a two-way cycle track with separate footway alongside the road as well as the right-turn lanes needed by vehicles.

This meant the council was looking at both ‘on-line’ cycle tracks, next to Badminton Road, or an ‘offline’ option, diverting cyclists away from the road through the village.

However one cyclist attending the online meeting said an 'offline' route that meant it took longer for cyclists to get from A to B would be "unfair".

Cyclists might also avoid the route and travel on the road if the route was diverted to meet the council's aim of delivering "highquality cycling infrastructure suitable for ages 8-80".

Council transport policy manager Andy Whitehead told the meeting: "The devil will be in the detail."

He said more information would emerge when a business case is submitted to the West of England Combined Authority, which is in charge of the funding, in June, and there would be consultations on more detailed plans next year.

n NEWS CHIPPING Sodbury Festival has unveiled this year's Festival Princess and her attendants as plans for this year's event take shape.

Miley-Jo Woods, aged 11, who attends Raysfield Junior School, is this year’s Princess.

Eliza Jones, 10, and Nancy Parsons, 9, who both attend St Johns Mead School, are this year’s Attendants.

Festival spokeswoman Kate Cox said: "As always, the standard of candidates for these popular roles was very high, leaving the judges with the difficult job of choosing just three to become part of the Festival team for 2022.

"All three are delighted to be successful and are now looking forward to their major role in the Festival."

This year will be the first full festival schedule for three years, after 2020's event was cancelled due to the lockdown and last year's went ahead in a limited form, with no carnival.

The 36th Festival, which is due to take place from June 10 to 19, has 'Platinum and Gold’

Chipping Sodbury Festival Princess is unveiled

The Lions Club organises the street fair and carnival, which is one of the festival highlights, every year.

The club's anniversary was last year but it was unable to celebrate it with a parade as a delay to the end of coronavirus restrictions meant the carnival had to be called off.

One innovation from last year, the Music in the Street Night, will return.

Kate said: "This was such a popular choice we are doing it again in 2022, so put Saturday 11th in your diaries now for some serious fun and dancing.

"Something a little different is happening in the evening of carnival day, with a Murder Mystery Night planned, so come and exercise those ‘ little grey cells’ whilst enjoying a three course dinner on Saturday 18.

Rosie wins world Irish dancing title A YATE teenager has brought home the world Irish dancing title for her age group.

Rosie Rendell, who attends Yate Academy, went to Düsseldorf in Germany for the 2022 World Irish Dance Association World Championships and took on all comers to win the title.

Rosie, who is 13, won the under-12 title last year but that event was held virtually, which meant she had to perform her dances on the floor in her living room in front of a webcam.

This time Rosie, who qualified for this year's U13’s event because of her win last year, was on stage performing live in front of judges and an audience.

Dad John said: "The competition was of an incredibly high standard, bringing all the elite performers from all over the world competing in the Irish Dance format in front of an international panel of judges.

"Rosie has been Irish dancing

since the age of seven and hasn’t looked back since!

"The level the dancers were performing was really quite impressive. I have zero coordination or dancing skills but I was utterly impressed all weekend.

"What I did see though is how strong a performer Rosie was and felt she deserved to be right in the mix come the end.

"When the numbers were called and Rosie was the winner we couldn’t believe it - the levels were so high, and Rosie’s quality really shone through, and it shows that her dedication and commitment shown to her dancing has paid off so far.

"She is at elite level, and I can confirm first hand she trains at that level too - whether she has had a good or bad day at school, her attitude towards her dancing is second to none.

Rosie said: “I never give up and keep trying to work hard at my dance.

Children tidy up the town...while adults make a mess

PUPILS at Tyndale Primary School in Yate have been complimented by members of the community for their hard work keeping the area tidy.

The school in Tyndale Avenue has a litter picking station and are earning an environment badge as part of their Character Education programme teaching respect, responsibility and resilience.

Year 6 teacher Jemma Stewart said: "By taking part in litter picking activities, our pupils have shown respect for the local environment by appreciating the landscape, responsibility by taking it upon themselves to improve the area and resilience when faced with an untidy area that they have previously looked after.

"Some children have also been inspired to organise their own events to support the school and the local community, including litter picking with families and friends, fundraising events such as cake sales and leading projects related to environmental issues."

A YATE man has been prosecuted after dumping chippings, flagstones and a "large number" of black bags full of rubbish in Chipping Sodbury.

South Gloucestershire Council’s Environmental Crime Team found evidence which led them to David Todd after the rubbish was found at Little Sodbury End Lane, Chipping Sodbury, in May 2020.

At Bristol Magistrates Court Todd, aged 22, of Harescombe, Yate was found guilty of fly-tipping and fined £534.

A council spokesperson said: "Todd stated that he was approached at home by a man who asked if he had any rubbish he wanted to get rid of.

"He claimed to have given the man six to eight black bags of household waste to dispose of but only gave a brief description of the individual and the vehicle he was driving."

Council cabinet member for local place Rachael Hunt said: "We will pursue anyone who dumps their rubbish illegally through the courts and we have a 100% success rate for securing convictions for this type of offence.

"Anyone who fly-tips in South Gloucestershire is five times more likely to be prosecuted than anywhere else in the country.

"We all have a responsibility to dispose of our waste in a responsible and lawful manner and if you hire a company to dispose of your waste, it is your responsibility to ensure they have the relevant waste carrier licences, or you could face a fine."

Unwanted goods and household or garden waste can all be disposed of at no cost via the council’s Sort IT! centres.

New community gets together A COMMUNITY group for residents of Yate's newest estate held an event to bring people together.

The event was organised by Ladden Garden Village Community Group in April so people moving into the 2,000-home Ladden Garden Village estate in the north of the town could meet each other.

Group member Janine Somers said: "Our focus is to bring together our ever-growing community, raise funds for our local charities, and have some fun during the events.

"We look forward to each new event and the opportunity to meet and welcome our neighbours.

"We have a lovely open space, children’s play park, and a wonderfully constructed pavilion, which are all perfect for the community events.

"Hopefully we will be able to successfully run community events for years to come."

Visitors to the event took part in craft activities with art project group, Home from Home, offering cyanotype printing with patterns, textures and shapes in nature.

The local rainbows group made delicious cakes for sale to raise funds towards their activities.

The event saw the launch of the 'pavilion', a temporary art structure made from offcuts of wood from the development which is set to stand for two years before the area's permanent community centre is built.

The event was supported by developers Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, Yate Town Council and social housing provider LiveWest, which has donated £1,000 to the community group towards organising events for the year ahead.

Although the development is still being built, more than 200 of the 747 affordable housing properties are already occupied.

LiveWest spokesperson Marie Burke said: "The Ladden Garden Village Community Group was set up last year and with a constant influx of new residents it is important to get to know your neighbours.

"It's building the idea of community, for any new community. So, the pavilion is great, because we can run a few things in there bringing people together. The event gave the community a chance to connect with each other in a new space."

Children spread message CHILDREN at a Yate primary school put pen to paper to persuade people to donate to food banks.

The Year 3 and 4 pupils at St Mary's CE Primary School in Church Road have been learning about food banks as part of a topic on social justice and making society fairer, and created their own leaflets to encourage people to donate.

Teacher Katie Timms said: "The children compared Britain today to life during the Stone Age and identified that in the stone age no food was wasted and meals were shared equally throughout a community.

"Because of this, the children have written leaflets to encourage people to donate to their local food bank.

"The leaflets have then been sent home with all children in the school to spread the message.

"We are really proud of the hard work that has gone into these and hope it makes a difference to our community. "

Getting more people back to work NEW jobs figures recently released have shown that the number of people in work in the UK has risen by 35,000 between February and March.

As we look to recover from the pandemic, one of the Government’s top priorities to help get people back into work.

In the summer of 2020, as the UK came out of the first COVID-19 lockdown, the Treasury announced a plan for jobs, with a clear goal: to protect, support and create jobs.

The plan has included a £2 billion Kickstart Scheme, which has already supported 152,000 young people into work; a £2.9 billion Restart Scheme, helping over 1 million long-term unemployed people find work; and a Lifetime Skills Guarantee,

offering 11 million adults a free qualification. With a record 29.6 million people now in work, it is clear that the plan is working.

Here in our own local community, the new statistics show that South Gloucestershire is continuing to outperform much of the country.

In our area, just 1.8% of people aged 16-64 are currently receiving out-of-work financial support, while across the UK as a whole, the average claimant rate is at 4.2%.

Supporting jobs and the local economy is a vital part of our positive plan for the community, and so I am delighted that these new figures show that the number of people out of work in our area is now down by 914 compared with this time last

year. There are now 914 more people with the security of a job in South Gloucestershire, and the district consistently ranks as one of the lowest areas for unemployment anywhere in the UK. Due to the UK’s incredible vaccination programme, and the £400 billion package of support that the Government made available, our economy has been remarkably resilient.

By being able to fully open up as early as we did, we are now seeing promising signs of recovery, with economic growth now exceeding predictions.

New GDP figures show that our economy grew by 7.5 per cent, reaching above pre-pandemic levels. This is the fastest economic growth of any

Oriental Salmon Fillets A simple oriental dish which can be prepared and cooked in half an hour.

Serves 2 Ingredients: Salmon fillets – 2, 150g each Agave nectar or honey- 2 tablespoons Dark Soy Sauce – 6 tbsp Dry chilli flakes or a little chopped fresh red chilli (optional) Black Pepper to season Here’s what you do: In a shallow dish mix together the agave nectar or honey, soy and chilli and add a few turns of black

pepper.

Put the salmon in a dish and leave to marinate (ideally in the fridge) covered for 30 mins.

Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 5/180C with a roasting tin in the oven to get hot.

Remove the tin from the oven.

Add the salmon to the tin, skin side down. Pour the marinade over the fish to stop it drying out.

Cook for 15 mins or until the fish is done. To check, insert a fork into the thickest part of the fish. If the fish comes away easily it’s done.

Serve with a green salad and crusty bread.

n NEWS PEOPLE in the Yate & Sodbury area who have given up their time to serve the community have been recognised in this year's South Gloucestershire Council Chair’s Community Awards.

The council says the awards are a chance to "celebrate the hard work and dedication of volunteers in our communities who display outstanding commitment in giving their time and effort to help others".

In total 18 awards were given to people and groups from across the district who give up their time to help others.

They included Hedgehog Rescue Chipping Sodbury founder Tracey Boden, Hawkesbury Upton guide leader Louise Roberts, Rob Pardoe of Iron Acton Community Choir and Shopmobility South Gloucestershire chair Janet Biggin.

Janet's citation praised her "valuable contribution" during six years as a trustee and chair of Shopmobility South Gloucestershire, which helps people with disabilities access Yate Shopping Centre.

Her citation said: "Her leadership has contributed to its great success, helping it to provide a valuable service to its many users, and helping Shopmobility South Glos to become a much-needed service, enabling users to access shopping, services, and social activities."

Janet's other voluntary roles over the years, including trustee and chair of Kingswood Community Transport and trustee of Friends of Page Park, were also recognised.

Shopmobility trustee David Bell said: "Janet has been a great asset to Shopmobility and has helped greatly in its development, especially in her years as Chair. This prestigious award is greatly deserved!"

ROB has led the Iron Acton Community Choir for eight years, including weekly online sessions throughout the pandemic to enable members to stay connected.

Rob's citation said: "His ability to connect with each member makes them feel nurtured and valued, and it is a testament to his inclusive leadership that the choir remains open to all.

"He raises morale and confidence in even the quietest choir members and this confidence spills over into other aspects of life, enabling members to become involved in other community activities.

"Rob makes the choir a caring, supportive, light-hearted haven, which brings joy to all involved."

Tracey Boden Tracey has run Hedgehog Rescue Chipping Sodbury for more than six years.

The rescue stayed open throughout the pandemic and at its peak last winter was caring for 76 hedgehogs.

Tracey's citation said: "She has provided volunteering opportunities at the rescue for local people, which proved invaluable during the pandemic, and advice to homeowners on how to make their gardens hedgehog-friendly. Her voluntary work supports the preservation of the area’s biodiversity."

Louise Roberts Louise is involved in many activities within Hawkesbury Upton, including supporting the local play area and community garden.

She has been involved with Girl Guiding work for more than 20 years and has been a rainbow leader for about 15, taking the group online and dropping off activity parcels to members during lockdown.

Her citation said: "As a rainbow leader she is incredibly welcoming, inclusive and flexible to support everyone in the group.

"Her organisation, creation and leadership of the community garden has been a great success, helping direct environmentallyfriendly activities and getting local children involved.

"Louise really excels in bringing people together in the most positive and effective way."

Bonnets are back in the park MORE than 600 children came to Yate's Kingsgate Park for this year's Easter Egg Extravaganza and bonnet competition.

The free annual event organised by Yate Town Council and the Friends of Kingsgate Park had to go online last year and in 2020 because of the pandemic, and organisers said they were "delighted" it could take place in person again.

There were 54 entrants in the bonnet competition, with the winners chosen by Yate Mayor Karl Tomasin and his Cadet, Matthew Bamford.

All entrants received an Easter Egg for their efforts.

Organiser thanked sponsors Murray Hire Centres, Wards Solicitors, Avon Sportsground Maintenance Company, Landcare Nursery Ltd, Re-Energise Events, Whirlpool Corporation, Morrisons, Waitrose and Tesco, for donating towards the event.

Yate Town Council is currently working towards two more free: the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacon Event on Tyler’s Field on June 2 and the Yate Rocks! festival on June 25-26.

CHILDREN from Raysfield Primary School in Chipping Sodbury helped to bury a time capsule remembering the COVID-19 pandemic in South Gloucestershire.

Pupils contributed items including pictures, photos and their own memories of lockdowns, home schooling and the kind acts they did during the pandemic.

Many other schools also sent in items to be included, with others including painted pebbles, poems and rainbow drawings submitted from local businesses, care homes, community groups, town councils and churches.

The council added official items including posters, social media campaign images and a timeline, detailing national restrictions and the local response, to the capsule, which has been buried outside the council’s offices at Badminton Road.

Yate Town Council Update YELLOW FISH CAMPAIGN COMING TO OUR AREA KEEP your eyes peeled for yellow fish coming to our streets!

These are markers on surface water drains, that remind people those drains go straight into the River Frome. In other words - if you put pollutants into them, you actually affect the river. You may have already seen some fish-shaped chalk markers on drains in the Frampton Cotterell area – we now have the funding to extend the campaign to Yate/Sodbury.

Bristol Avon Rivers Trust (BART) will be working with us at a joint event on 11th June 2022 (times and meeting point to be announced) to roll out the campaign.

The event is to spray paint yellow fish on drains that run into the river; we will be using stencils provided by BART. The chalk spray is temporary and environmentally friendly, so it won’t damage wildlife. If you would like to be involved when we do this in Yate, please message us. ESCAPE-pain courses at Active Centres Circadian Trust, who run and operate Active Lifestyle Centres across South Gloucestershire, have been commissioned by the Clinical Commissioning Group, NHS (CCG) to deliver a series of ESCAPE-pain courses. The courses will run up to March 2023.

Active Centres' mission is to inspire active lifestyles. As one of South Gloucestershire’s largest employers, operating five Active Lifestyle Centres (Bradley Stoke, Kingswood, Longwell Green, Thornbury & Yate), Active Centres’ strategy focuses on tackling inactivity to help people stay active throughout their lives within a healthy community.

Customers are at the heart of Active Centres' lifestyle journey, and with the centres' expertise, partnerships and collaborations, and investments in facilities and technology, they are changing people's active lives. Now, Active Centres have been commissioned by the NHS CCG to run ESCAPEpain courses.

ESCAPE-pain stands for Enabling Self-management and Coping with Arthritic Pain using Exercise.

It is an evidence-based, group rehabilitation course for people with chronic joint pain developed

by Professor Mike Hurley.

The progressive exercise programme will help people learn how to cope with pain, how to exercise safely and pace themselves, manage their symptoms, and be around people who have the same condition.

Over 8.75 million people in the UK suffer from chronic joint pain, which can prevent them from being active. However, activity will help improve physical and psychological wellbeing and ensure a healthy social life.

The Escape-pain courses will be available in Active Lifestyle Centres across South Gloucestershire. The courses are aimed at people over 45 years, who have been suffering from chronic knee and hip arthritic pain for three months or more, and need a supervised fitness

programme so that they can work toward independent living and mobility. Each session will help participants understand their condition, educate them so that they can go away, and be more independent.

Gloria Isaac took part in one of the Escape-pain courses. She said, "Attending the Escape-pain course, it has benefited me as: I was having cortisone injections in my right knee 6 monthly. I however have not felt the need for any further treatment. I have seen improvement in my wellbeing mentally, physically and health-

wise. I've also seen improvements in my muscular strength around my knee and other muscles too. I am now continuing with a follow up class for arthritis at the leisure centre, so I benefited from the course a lot.”

Jim Rollo, Head of Lifestyles, said, " Following the success of our GP Healthy Lifestyle Referral Scheme, Active Centres are proud to receive this commission, and deliver this vital service that has the potential to improve the lifestyle of so many people within our local communities who suffer from chronic knee and hip arthritic pain." He adds, “The Escapepain courses are underway, and participants have already noticed improvements mentally and physically.”

Visit to Genieri

Dementia-friendly centre

Women in Genieri met with friends who visited from Yate.

YATE residents who have been building links with a village in West Africa have been on a visit.

Yate-Genieri Community Link is a long-standing organisation fostering friendship between Yate and the village of Genieri in The Gambia.

Chairman Marian Gilpin said: "Two of our committee members travelled to Genieri at the end of March, to re-establish old friendships and to observe progress on the projects we have been supporting."

The link recently replaced an agricultural water pump in the village's 'women's gardens', which residents are paying towards of through small monthly contributions from selling vegetables, and are also paying into a garden fund for future repairs.

Marian said: "This is a first massive step towards sustainability and the village will derive huge benefit both in improved diet and improved income."

YATE Town Council has been working in partnership with Yate Shopping Centre to make the area more dementia-friendly.

Town councillors Sandra Emms and Jane Price of Yate Town Council, and Shopping Centre Manager Andy Lowrey recognised that the shopping centre can be quite disorientating for people living with the condition, who can lose their bearings, and said there had been many examples of people leaving by the wrong exit and getting lost.

Each route in and out of the shopping centre is now marked with different-coloured planters so people can use the colours to help identify their location and exit. The red planters are placed on South Walk from Poundland to Lidl, with the purple planters marking out the West Walk route from Jimmy Deane's to the Leisure Centre, the green ones on East Walk from Iceland to Miss Millie's and the blue planters on North Walk from Pandora to Tesco.

This project is part of the Town Council’s wider project to ensure the town is accessible to all.

Yate is one of the first towns in the country to be awarded Age Friendly status, and the town council has just announced plans for its second Yate Ageing Better Festival, which will take place at Yate Shopping Centre, outside the Over 50’s Pop Inn Café, on July 14 from 11am-2pm.

Sandra said: "If you or a member of your family is living with dementia, you can now find your way out of the shopping centre on the right route home by looking for the right colour planters and following them out.

"We also hope this will help young children identify routes, as well as those with disabilities who need visual markers."

CONGRATULATIONS to everybody who took part in the Winter Season this year.

This was our first time back since 2020 and we were all a little out of practice, but I think we all enjoyed getting back on the oche and seeing friends again.

We decided to play as one division this season, because of several teams not returning. Some also changed venues, and we now have The Tern Inn as our main home. Thank you for making us so welcome.

The season was very close, with five teams within touching distance of winning right up until the final match. Rose & Crown B from Rangeworthy were finally victorious, with both Tern teams a close second and third.

The 601 team game was won by The Lamb, Iron Acton, with The Rose & Crown B team coming runners up (by 1 point) and Beaufort B, Chipping Sodbury, third (by 2 points).

The Team Knock-Out was won by The Tern A team against an unlucky Abbotswood. This was all down to the doubles at the finish (gotta love double 1!)

"We love to see the students trying so hard to prepare the food and run the restaurant.”

n SPORT CHIPPING Sodbury are gearing up for a crucial summer of cricket at all levels after a particularly hectic off season.

One of the largest and most vibrant community clubs in South Gloucestershire has continued to make significant investments in its facilities at The Ridings.

And players and officials now hope that improvements to Sodbury's two main playing areas will be reflected with big steps forward on the pitch.

Club chair Andy Shield said: "These are very exciting times. As a club, we have been extremely busy since last September, and our players, members and supporters will see some big changes when the first matches of the new campaign take place.

"Everything is geared towards giving all our teams, at senior and junior level, the chance to make progress this summer."

Since the end of last season, the club have installed new doors and windows at their main pavilion, which itself underwent a complete refurbishment the year before, while a new patio area has also been laid.

The club welcomes players of all abilities, from the age of five upwards, and also welcomes the local community to support and enjoy the facilities.

Senior practice is at the Ridings on Thursdays at 6.15pm, with sessions for juniors and girls on Fridays at 6pm.

Manager leaves Yate Town for job closer to home YATE Town manager Paul Michael has left the club.

The boss who guided the club to seventh place in the Southern League Premier South this season has been appointed manager of Merthyr Town, closer to his home in Wales.

After a first season curtailed by coronavirus restrictions, this year the club won half of its league games, finishing two places outside the play-offs, reached the FA Cup First Round and won the Gloucestershire Senior Cup, courtesy of a 5-0 win over Cirencester Town.

In a message to the club and its fans Paul said it had "been an absolute pleasure" to manage the club and added: "This decision has not been an easy one.

"I am incredibly proud to have been the manager of this football club for two seasons, albeit with one curtailed very early on due to the pandemic.

"I will look back on this period with pride and I hope

Despite wins over Kings Langley (3-1) and Dorchester Town (1-0), the play-offs were out of reach by the final match of the season, a 2-1 home defeat to Gosport Borough.
