Anger over new plan for former pub site OBJECTIONS have been made to the latest plan to develop the site of the former Railway Hotel in Yate.

A planning inspector recently dismissed an appeal by the Railway Building Company, which was seeking consent for the building of up to ten houses on the Station Road plot.

Now a new outline application has been sent to South Gloucestershire Council

by Bristol-based Dixon Design asking for permission to put 43 flats on the land.

Opponents of the new scheme have said they are angry and shocked at the proposal.

They said objections had been made to the first plan over the number of houses being “squeezed” onto the site so the new proposal was “so much worse”. They also raised concerns over what they said were too few parking spaces to be provided.

The Railway was

Welcome for supported Chipping Sodbury housing use proposal soprano on song at church recital for ex-care home A PROPOSED new role for the former Woodleaze residential home in Yate has been put forward, with the premises to be used as supported housing for young people leaving care.

Woodleaze, in Station Road, provided care for people with dementia but was decommissioned because the ageing building was no longer fit for purpose.

Councillors in Yate have welcomed the planned use of the building.

Ruth Davis said: “This is by far the best proposal for the Woodleaze site that has been brought forward.

“This scheme would provide much-needed supported accommodation for up to 20 young people close to Yate town centre and its public transport links.”

Yate North councillor Mike Drew said: “If the site were sold for housing that would put many more cars on already busy local roads.

“Using the existing building to support young people should mean fewer cars and less disruption for residents. All options will soon go out for public consultation and we would encourage residents to make their views known.”

A YOUNG soprano from Chipping Sodbury has been invited to sing at an organ recital in St Mary Redcliffe Church, Bristol.

Emma Sainsbury, 21, will make her debut appearance at the church on Thursday, May 10, in the lunchtime concert.

The programme will feature the church’s director of music, Andrew Kirk, playing L'Ascension

by Olivier Messiaen on the Harrison and Harrison pipe organ that is highly regarded as a masterpiece of Edwardian craftsmanship.

Emma, who will sing three pieces, said she felt honoured to be invited to sing at the “special” St Mary Redcliffe.

The 45-minute recital starts at 1.15pm, with tea, coffee and biscuits served from 1pm. Admission is free with a retiring collection.

Yate Academy set to return to separate primary and secondary schools THE trust that took over Yate Academy is planning to separate its primary and secondary phases to create two separate schools.

Greenshaw Learning Trust has run the academy for the past eight months after the school broke away from the Ridings’ Federation of Academies.

Yate Academy consists of a nursery and primary school, known as Woodlands, and a secondary school, providing all-through education from the age of three to 19.

But Greenshaw has just started a consultation to divide them up from September, with comments accepted until May 14.

It said: “There are benefits to this separation for both schools, including formalising the leadership of the schools in line with other schools within the trust, the relationship the schools will have with Ofsted and other external bodies and how much funding is allocated to the schools.

“The existing strong relationship between

all phases of the school will continue if the separation goes ahead, which includes sharing expertise and resources and the day-to-day operations will continue in their current form.”

The announcement comes after the recent departure of Paul Skipp, the academy’s principal since September 2015.

Isabel Ambrose is now leading the secondary school part of the academy, while Woodlands is in the charge of Kirsty Borrill.

The secondary phase has been an academy for a longer time than Woodlands, with the former King Edmund Community School in Sundridge Park becoming part of the Ridings’ Federation in 2009 and changing its name to Yate International Academy. Greenshaw subsequently dropped the “international” tag.

The former Woodlands Primary School, in the same road, joined the federation in 2011.

Greenshaw stepped in to run Yate Academy as a result of well-publicised difficult times for the Ridings’ Federation.

It experienced financial problems, the

loss of two consecutive short-lived chief executive principals and poor assessments from education watchdog Ofsted of both the academies it ran at the time - Yate and Winterbourne.

The locally-based Olympus Academy Trust now runs Winterbourne Academy.

Yate primary school keeps good Ofsted rating STRONG leadership at St Mary’s Church of England Primary School in Yate has seen it maintain its rating of good from Ofsted.

Paul Williams, an inspector from the education watchdog, said headteacher Jon Bird had developed teachers’ skills well and given them leadership responsibilities which had brought out the best in them.

Pupils achieved well, making good progress throughout the school, and by the end of year six, the proportion who attained the standard expected of them in reading, writing and mathematics was higher than seen nationally. Their attendance was also good.

The visit by Mr Williams was the first short inspection carried out since the school was judged to be good in June 2014.

In his letter to Mr Bird after the visit, he said: “At the previous inspection the school

was asked to improve the quality of teaching, particularly of writing.

“By asking teachers to reflect on their work, and then successfully developing their skills, you have achieved this.

“Pupils’ progress in writing, compared to that of other pupils nationally, was above average last year.”

Mr Williams also said pupils’ progress in reading had improved this year, with teachers ensuring that children, especially boys, had positive role models who encouraged them to read.

He said while resulting in boys reading more often, some did not read enough different types of books.

The inspector also said the majority of pupils’ accuracy in spelling had improved and the teaching of maths now offered pupils more challenge.

Plan for 43 flats for Yate pub site unveiled A NEW scheme for 43 flats to be built on the site of a former Yate pub has been drawn up, just as a previous housing proposal was rejected by a planning inspector.

The latest plan is in outline only and seeks permission for the flats on the Station Road plot where the Railway Hotel used to stand.

The controversial demolition of the pub went ahead despite protests from local people and the collecting of a large number of names on a petition.

Opponents said the pub was a locally listed building and a landmark in the town for nearly 200 years.

But consent was given for the building to be knocked down and a scheme to build up to ten houses on the site was submitted by the Railway Building Company.

However, the applicant asked a planning inspector to determine the application when South Gloucestershire Council failed to do so within time.

That appeal was recently rejected by an inspector, who acknowledged there would be a benefit from the provision of extra homes at a time when there was a shortfall in the five year housing land supply in South Gloucestershire.

He also said future residents of the properties would

contribute to and support the local economy.

But he also said: “The harm to the character and appearance of the area would significantly and demonstrably outweigh these benefits.”

The latest plan for the site has been submitted under the name of Dixon Design.

A statement to the council said: “In making the planning application, it is our submission that the application proposes a high quality, sustainable development that is in line with the policy provisions of the adopted plan for South Gloucestershire Council and will provide significant benefits which would substantially outweigh any minor adverse impact of the proposals.”

The document said the land formed a brownfield site which was “in a sustainable location with excellent access to transport links and local facilities as well as many employment opportunities close by.”

It also said: “Although Station Road is a busy road, the proposed apartments would not result in a significant increase in vehicle movements and traffic that would have any noticeable or detrimental impact.”

A number of objections to the proposal have already been sent in by local people.

Village primary school praised in inspection DECISIVE action has been taken at Iron Acton Church of England Primary School to tackle absence, with teaching also improving considerably.

Education inspection service Ofsted said the concerted efforts of “well-respected” headteacher Mike Riches during his two years in the post had raised teaching standards and built a strong team of staff, subject leaders and governors.

Inspector Catherine Beeks said pupils enjoyed school and were keen to achieve well, having positive attitudes to learning.

Staff were motivated and proud to be part of the school, while governors were skilled and had a clear understanding of the school’s main priorities.

The visit was the first short inspection carried out at the village primary since it was judged to be good in January 2014 and it maintained its rating after the visit by Ms Beeks.

Sitting comfortably? Pub garden hosts Then Aimee will start information board her bedtime stories AUTHOR Aimee Williams will launch her first collection of bedtime stories at an event in Yate library.

A short story and poetry writer, Aimee, 35, has always lived in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area.

She started composing poetry at a young age and having established her writing, has now produced her first book for children, using her experience as a mother of three.

Called The Fairy, the Dreamer and a Rabbit named Woof!, it features three bedtime stories and is published by Rowanvale.

It will be launched in the library on Saturday, May 19, from 10amnoon during a family fun morning, which will include book readings, face painting and colouring activities for youngsters.

Copies of the book will be given away as part of a series of competitions, as well as being on sale.

AN information board has been unveiled in Old Sodbury to help mark 50 years of work by Cotswold voluntary wardens.

Wardens in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty were first established in 1968 and there are now 400 people undertaking a variety of tasks, from repairing and restoring drystone walls to maintaining footpaths, planting trees and leading guided walks.

n NEWS A QUALITY mark for nurseries has been awarded to Pumpkins in Badminton to recognise its first aid and safety of children.

The Millie’s Mark is given to nurseries where all staff are trained in paediatric first aid.

It is awarded by the National Day Nurseries Association in conjunction with the Department for Education and Millie’s Trust.

First aid accolade for rural nursery The trust has campaigned for all staff to have paediatric first aid training, as opposed to the Ofsted requirement of one first aider present at all times.

Amanda Wallis, who runs the nursery, said: “Set in a rural community, it is essential that all of our staff have the skills and confidence to administer life saving treatment should the need arise.”

From mining to art - former pit among venues for annual art trail WILLOW and chainsaw sculptures will be featured at a new venue in this year’s Severn Vale Art Trail.

Andy O’Neill, well known in South Gloucestershire for turning fallen trees into artworks, seating and play features, is among six exhibitors to have displays at the Oldwood Pits site in Tanhouse Lane, Rangeworthy.

He will be joined by Jenny Humphris, Tanya Bartlett, Audrey Forbes and John Kemp, who all work with willow, as well as painter Tara Stein.

More than 50 other artists have also enlisted for the increasingly popular trail, which runs from May 4-13.

It is part of Thornbury Arts Festival - running after this year’s main festival closes - and allows people to see a variety of art forms at a series of studio and exhibition venues in Thornbury and a number of other towns and villages.

More than half of the locations are in Thornbury but visitors can also enjoy displays in places from Olveston and Alveston to Charfield, North Nibley and Berkeley.

There will be ten group exhibition venues open while the trail is running, together with many individual artists’ studios.

The variety of artistic skills on show will also include jewellery making and pottery to pen and ink geometric drawings, painting and photography.

Back on the road - bus to link Chipping Sodbury directly with Southmead Hospital A DIRECT bus route between Chipping Sodbury and Southmead Hospital will be introduced at the end of May after pressure was put on bus operator First.

The number 82 service currently starts and ends in Yate so Chipping Sodbury passengers have to catch one bus before changing onto another one.

But from May 27 the route will continue into and from Chipping Sodbury, serving not only the town but also making it easier for people living in nearby

villages.

Two petitions were raised by local politicians and although First Bus originally said it was not commercially viable to extend the route, it now says it is possible to do so.

James Freeman, managing director of First West of England, said: “We are delighted that improvements to the 82 service mean we have been able to extend it from Yate so as to provide a direct connection to and from Chipping Sodbury.

Art club to Raising a glass to St Peter’s Hospice run exhibition and sale during May Day fair AN art exhibition and sale will be staged by the Phoenix Art Club in Iron Acton Parish Hall during the village’s May Day celebrations.

Visitors can call in from 10am4pm on Monday, May 7, when the annual May Day fair takes place.

Admission is free and homemade cakes, tea, coffee and squash will be on sale.

It is hoped to also have an art display from Iron Acton Primary School set up in the foyer.

MORE than £750 was raised for St Peter’s Hospice through a wine tasting event in Chipping Sodbury.

The money will go to the charity’s Room to Care appeal to build a new hospice and inpatient care facility.

More than £6 million is needed for the project but a successful fund raising effort means it is only £400,000 short of the target.

The wine tasting was organised by Ann Murray of the town’s Cooking 4 Cookery School and held in Hamptons cafe.

Students put through interview paces PUPILS at Brimsham Green School in Yate were tested on interview techniques during an event involving local business representatives.

Mock interviews were run for the year 11 students to help them when they eventually go through the process for real.

They each prepared a CV and letter of application, which were sent to the employers ahead of the interview, and were able to

research the business several days beforehand once they knew who they would be meeting.

The pupils had previously covered areas such as interview techniques and appropriate outfits during their personal, social and health education lessons After the interviews were completed, students received written feedback on their performance.

Wacky racers help bring in cash for homelessness charity SCHOOL pupils in Yate set roads experts a Lego car design challenge to help raise money for charity.

Business mentors from Highways England are supporting Brimsham Green School students as part of a programme to turn the youngsters’ fundraising ideas into a reality.

At the same time, it develops the pupils’ confidence, teamwork and resilience.

The students tasked the Highways England team with building something creative out of Lego in just four minutes at a fundraising event.

Charlotte Collinson, one of the mentors, said: “We were

really impressed with their ideas for fundraising - the Lego challenge was particularly popular with our design and engineering colleagues and we loved the wacky results.”

With a cake sale and table football challenge also part of the fund raising, more than £400 was raised for the homelessness charity Caring in Bristol.

The pupils also had to make a presentation on their charitable efforts to a group of Highways England staff.

In May, the project will culminate in a boardroom challenge where students will present their achievements to a group of local business leaders.

Big crowds expected at annual Yate Rocks festival THOUSANDS of people are set to enjoy Yate’s popular community music festival when the two-day event returns to Kingsgate Park in June.

Yate Rocks Festival is now in its 13th year, having proved to be a hit with people of all ages.

Large crowds go along to hear local bands, visit sideshows, support community and craft stalls and enjoy a variety of food and drink.

Local dance groups will also be involved and local fire fighters will have a fire engine at the park for people to look over.

Entertainment includes giant inflatables for children, who can

also have a go on trampolines and join in football games.

Go-karts which were introduced last year will return and families can also watch Punch and Judy shows.

Day one of the festival takes place from noon-8pm on Saturday, June 23.

The following day’s events will start with a Praise in the Park from 10.30am-noon, with local churches providing an outdoor service.

A singing competition for local choirs will be the highlight of an afternoon Picnic in the Park from 1.30pm.

PUPILS at Yate’s Brimsham Green School raised more than £2,000 for Sport Relief through a World Cup challenge.

The 500 students embarked on a Run to Russia sponsored event to collectively run, walk or jog a total of 1,911 miles - the distance from Bristol to Moscow.

They were inspired by the forthcoming World Cup, to be hosted by Russia, and each pupil took time out on three mornings to add to the total covered.

The school also held its own version of the football tournament, with year 11 football and netball teams playing the PE staff.

Sport Relief is run to raise money to support vulnerable people across the UK and around the world.

Literary festival to showcase the art of drinking in a good novel IT can be argued that the perfect book needs to be read whilst holding a glass of something special in the other hand. Now people are to get a chance to investigate the role of drinking in literature at a festival event.

Organisers of the Cotswold Edge Literary Festival have organised an evening of books and beverages as part of the week long event in June.

The owner of the Bristol Wine School, Tristan Darby is going to be on hand to explain why, from sherry in Shakespeare to fine wines in modern classics, drinks have always had a place in literature.

People attending the event on June 21 at the Hamptons Deli in Chipping Sodbury High Street will be able to taste the wines and other drinks that Tristan highlights.

Tristan has experience of writing about wine. He’s is drinks columnist for The Bath Magazine and the Bristol Magazine, and is a judge for both the Bristol and Bath Good Food Awards.

He’s also spent time touring as a professional actor and singer, and will be

Demand for coffee and cinema leads to new event at Armadillo centre AFTERNOON teas and a free film screening have been introduced at the Armadillo youth cafe in Yate - for the over50s.

The weekly event runs on Thursdays from 1pm and was introduced after the popularity of coffee mornings and movies, which have been offered also on Thursdays for the past five years for the same age group.

Carene Whiting-Hays, venues operations officer for Yate Town Council, which runs the youth cafe, said: “We decided it was time to respond to the demand and launch an additional afternoon event.”

both sessions but the afternoon screening includes subtitles to help those with hearing problems.

Tockington garden opens for weekend OWNERS of a garden in Tockington will welcome the public for the first time during a weekend in May as part of the National Garden Scheme.

Stoneleigh Down was redesigned in 2014 and densely planted with a wide variety of trees, shrubs and bulbs for yearround interest.

Visitors to the garden on Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, will also see sub-tropical, wildlife and oriental ponds in the two-thirds of an acre of grounds.

The National Garden Scheme involves the opening of hundreds of gardens of all types and sizes, from those at grand

homes to others on modern housing estates, to raise money for charity.

In 2017, a record £3 million was donated to a range of organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Hospice UK and the National Autistic Society as a result of the garden visits and it is hoped to collect even more this year.

Stoneleigh Down will be open from 1-5pm, with parking provided in the village.

Admission is £4 but children will be allowed in free. It will also be open later in the year on September 1 and 2.

Trio to head up Chipping Sodbury business group A NEW team has been established to run Chipping Sodbury Chamber of Commerce after the recent departure of its chairwoman Jo Cox. Three executive members of the chamber will jointly chair the organisation - businessman Andrew Webb, photographer Rich McDonough and lawyer Michelle Baden-Daintree.

The trio were elected by fellow members to run the chamber and raise the profile of the town.

They also take up their roles in the year when Chipping Sodbury, after a successful fund raising campaign, will get one of the Gromit statues - the canine character from the popular Wallace and Gromit animation series - that make up a new art trail for Bristol and the surrounding area.

World’s best head for Badminton STARS of the eventing world will be at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials as they bid to win the sport’s most prestigious competition.

Andrew Nicholson, who finally won the international last year after a remarkable recovery from a serious neck injury that could have paralysed him 21 months earlier, returns with Nereo to defend their title.

However, the Wiltshire-based New Zealander has withdrawn his second ride, Jet Set, from the competition, which will see some 80 horse and rider partnerships take on the three phases of dressage, cross-country and showjumping from May 3-6.

The South Gloucestershire park will also host the Mitsubishi Cup for grassroots riders on Wednesday, May 2, ahead of the feature contest.

Nicholson will face tough competition from many of the best event riders during the challenge - not least from Germany’s Michael Jung, the current Olympic champion, and his superstar horse La Biosthetique Sam. Sam, who has carried Jung to world and European glory, as well as two consecutive Olympic titles, is due to be retired later this season so it will be his last run at Badminton.

The home side will be looking for victory

from the likes of past Badminton champions Oliver Townend and Pippa Funnell, as well as other team GB riders such as Gemma Tattersall and South Gloucestershire’s Harry Meade.

Meanwhile, British team stalwart Kristina Cook is racing to recover from a dislocated shoulder in time to compete, while the withdrawal of Jet Set means William Fox-Pitt has come off the waiting list to earn his place in the line-up.

Other major contenders include Kiwis Jonelle and Tim Price and four-time Badminton winner Mark Todd.

In his second year as cross-country course designer, Eric Winter has created another big and challenging track where the best horses and riders will take the most direct routes but with longer options for the less experienced.

He said: “It’s important that we keep cross-country at the heart of the sport. I want to get everyone round, while allowing the best horses to prosper. I want riders to come back and say ‘That was exciting’.”

Feature fences on the four-mile course include those at the quarry, Huntsman’s Close, the lake, Vicarage Vee and the recently introduced Hildon Water Pond.

ACTOR Martin Clunes will be among the crowds at Badminton Horse Trials in his role as president of the British Horse Society.

The organisation has been chosen as the event’s nominated charity for the year and the popular actor - best known for his Doc Martin and Men Behaving Badly roles - will help promote its work during his visit, as well as meet many of its members attending the international.

Meanwhile, the Princess Royal - who was a successful competitor at Badminton herself and is the society’s vice-patron - will be in the main arena at the conclusion of the trials on Sunday, May 6, to present the Mitsubishi Motors Trophy to the winning rider.

Princess Anne is also expected to meet some of the

many volunteers who give up their time for the society to improve and promote horse welfare, horse and rider safety, riding routes and many other aspects of equestrianism.

effort. As a temporary measure initially, the Women’s Royal Air Force (WRAF) was formed in April 1918 so women could undertake a range of military industrial roles.

It was disbanded in 1920 but re-born in 1949 to offer women a full professional career in the air force for the first time.

In Yate, by mid-1918, staff at the newly formed Western Aircraft Repair Depot on Station Road included 497 women out of a workforce of 1,800.

Unsurprisingly, WRAF staff dominated the clerical and domestic duties at the plant.

Nevertheless, this was the first entry for women into modern industry and the WRAF offered opportunities for technical training.

They became aero-engine fitters and acetylene welders in Yate, with many women carrying out skilled and unskilled mechanical work at the new engine repair works section of the aircraft depot. A sizeable number were also drivers of different kinds.

For some women, opportunities for work increased and there were better wages in munitions, where women often braved dangerous working conditions. Others decided to volunteer to become nurses both at home and abroad.

Meanwhile, for those with husbands serving in the war, they also continued to run their homes, care for their children and look after elderly relatives, often while holding down a job.

With coal and food prices doubling over the period of the

war, life was hard for many women and the Women’s Institute and the Mothers’ Union were formed to support those women on the home front.

There were also many moving stories of the time, among them that of May Huggins of Chipping Sodbury and American airman Ned Steel.

May fell in love with Ned while he was stationed at the Yate aircraft repair depot and they exchanged postcards when he was posted to France. At the end of the war, May’s elderly parents refused to let her marry Ned and go to America.

Ned continued to send her postcards right up until he died in 1952, although he married another woman. May died in 1997 at the age of 96, having never married.

Gritter fleet faces cuts Fleece takes Pub of the Year Award THE fleet of gritters used to treat South Gloucestershire’s roads in the winter is set to be cut to save money.

It is also planned to remove more than 18 miles (30km) of roads within the district from those that are salted as a precaution to reduce the risk of ice forming.

Among roads that will be affected by the change are Sibland Road in Thornbury.

In Chipping Sodbury, Dodington and Westerleigh, it is proposed to no longer have precautionary salting of Claypit Hill, part of Dodington Road, Gibbs Lane and Sodbury Lane.

Winterbourne and Frampton Cotterell will see Park Lane and Perrinpit Road removed from the list.

South Gloucestershire Council currently uses a fleet of 11 gritters to not only spread salt where ice could form but also to melt ice that has already developed and snow that has fallen. The winter highways team also removes snow.

It said it didn’t have the resources to treat all of its 955 miles (1,537km) of highway so prioritised busier roads, bus

routes, links to key towns and villages and routes to hospitals and schools.

Such primary routes amount to about 334 miles (538km) being treated during standard precautionary salting.

A further 42 miles (67km) of secondary routes are only gritted when there is a predicted substantial increase of risk from snow or freezing rain and when resources allowed.

The council’s proposals to make savings of £100,000 include reducing the gritter fleet by two and cutting the amount of time spent by drivers treating roads.

It said although it carried out an exercise to ensure efficiency in treating roads, that only realised half of its savings target, making it necessary to remove some routes.

Public consultation is currently taking place on the moves and anyone who wants to make a comment should do so via the council’s website by June 18.

It is planned to introduce the changes, if agreed, in time for next winter.

THE Fleece in Hillesley has been unveiled as the Gloucesteshire Pub of the Year. The new tenants Karen McGeoch and Rod Undy took over the business 20 months ago with a mission to get the pub back on its feet.

us on the friendly atmosphere that has re emerged here and compliments like that really do make the hard work worthwhile.”

The official presentation will take place at The Fleece on 5th May at 3pm, followed by music from the Welcome Parrots.

Further progress on Yate Spur cycle path A FURTHER section of the Yate Spur cycle path has been opened, with the route also open to horse riders and walkers.

The off-road track will eventually link Yate to the Bristol-Bath railway path, opening up the cycle network to many more people.

The latest section links Broad Lane in Westerleigh with the cycle crossing point on Westerleigh Road.

Westerleigh councillor Claire Young said: "It is fantastic to see another important link in this route open. When finished, it will make commuting to work by bike an option for more people, as well as being a great way for families to get out into the countryside.

"We will keep pushing for the final sections to be

completed. The link from Dodmoor Crossing to the Nibley Lane junction and the section under the railway bridge by the Shire Way roundabout will bring some of the biggest safety improvements."

However, Paul Hulbert, chairman of the Joint Cycleway Group, said it had been told that the next leg from Broad Lane to Nibley Lane Corner would cost more than was available in the current spending round due to drainage and access problems.

He said: “We've asked South Gloucestershire Council to look at alternative ideas and funding sources. However, we have been told that some small improvements we requested on the A432 Kennedy Way will be done in this financial year.”

Politician turned author highlight of town festival FORMER home secretary Alan Johnson will be in Chipping Sodbury to take part in the town’s annual festival.

Mr Johnson, who stepped down as a Labour MP in 2017 after 20 years in parliament, will be guest speaker at an evening event in the town hall on Wednesday, June 13.

As well as his political life, he is expected to talk about his three published memoirs, two of which won literary awards.

This year’s festival runs from June 8-17, with music, talks, workshops and a quiz included in the programme.

A talent show, an open day at Hanson’s quarry and a wine tasting event have also been organised.

During the festival, music will be provided by the likes of rock ’n’ roll band The Alligators and For the Record.

A jazz night will also feature performances by The Storyville Strutters and Cass Caswell, together with a sevenpiece band with Sinead McCabe.

The traditional Music in the Street event also returns, while regular festival U3A bike rides will this year be joined by taster walks organised by Southwold Ramblers.

Another new event will see the Sodbury 800 celebrations launched with a concert in St John’s Church by Joglaresa, brought to the town by Chipping Sodbury Music Society.

Sodbury 800 marks the 800th anniversary of the signing of the royal market charter, which heralded the birth of Chipping Sodbury as a market town.

Joglaresa, with Belinda Sykes, is a medieval folk ensemble and tickets for the 7pm concert on Sunday, June 10, can be bought online at https://www.ticketsource. co.uk/csmusicsociety or from a variety of town shops.

The popular street fair and carnival will be the feature of the closing weekend and if weather permits, will include a flypast by a Dakota plane.

LIBERAL Democrats on South Gloucestershire Council have elected a new leader to replace long-standing Ruth Davis.

The Yate councillor had held the post for 13 years but she has now handed the baton over to Westerleigh councillor Claire Young, who will lead her party into the local elections in 2019.

Councillor Young paid tribute to her predecessor, describing her as “a terrific champion for local people and community causes”.

She said: “She is a great mentor and friend and I’m honoured to be following in her footsteps.”

Councillor Davis said: “Although I am stepping down as group leader, I am not going anywhere. I hope to be re-elected as councillor for Yate Central in 2019 so I can continue to stand up for local residents.”

Award for support group A GROUP which speaks for young people in care and those leaving the care system has been recognised with an award.

The British Youth Council award was made to the Experienced Panel in Care - EPIC - which consists of 15 to 25-year-olds in South Gloucestershire who have experience of being in care themselves.

As well as representing the views of young people like them, they also campaign on issues that affect them, such as council tax.

As a result of EPIC’s work, South Gloucestershire Council decided to support care leavers up to the age of 21 by paying their council tax bills for the next year.

EPIC received the Inspiring Project Award, which recognises the efforts made by projects to engage young people and give them a voice.

A certificate was presented to the group

by Jon Hunt, the council’s Cabinet member for children and young people, at a Youth On Board awards event.

He said: “We understand that it can be difficult for young people leaving care and are very pleased to be able to offer this support, which should help relieve some financial pressure as care leavers move into independence.”

Perspective: a way of looking

PERSPECTIVE - it’s one of the many great words in the English language. I will, though, be careful writing about the English language. It’s something I respect, but often view with an air of suspicious awe and usually from a safe distance - say two or three pages of abbreviated clinical notes!

If I were to ask your perspective on eye care & vision, you may think it an odd choice of words.

Traffic lights at Tormarton go as Ring Road contraflow is removed

Over 50’s Forum looks to the future

AFTER almost a year of delays, diversions and disruption, the Avon Ring Road is set to fully reopen at Bromley Heath.

The contraflow system introduced on the A4174 while work to repair the Bromley Heath Viaduct was carried out was set to be removed during the last weekend of April.

But some of the roads which have been shut during the roadworks could now stay closed - a move which has brought angry protests from motorists.

The ring road was due to close in both directions between the Wick Wick roundabout and the Hambrook traffic lights for the contraflow to be removed, with diversions signposted and published online.

The road was due to close at 8pm on Friday, April 27, reopening at 6am on Monday

Once the westbound viaduct is reopened the 2+ lane and bus lane on the A4174 were due to be reinstated and the traffic lights at Hambrook returned to their settings from before the work began.

South Gloucestershire Council says the ring road closure is needed on order to remove the contraflow system safely.

Council cabinet member for transport Colin Hunt said: “We’re pleased that this major engineering project is coming to an end and that the viaduct has been made fit for the future and now features a greatly improved shared footpath for cyclists and pedestrians.”

“We would like to take this

opportunity to thank residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation throughout this essential maintenance and improvement work.”

Temporary traffic lights at the junction of the A46 and B4465 at Tormarton, near junction 18 of the M4, have been removed despite calls from some residents for them to be made permanent.

In a message on its dedicated Bromley Heath viaduct works Facebook page, the council said: “The temporary lights at Tormarton were only intended to help ease the pressure of traffic during the viaduct works and the equipment used is not suitable to be made a permanent fixture. We are aware that these lights have been welcomed locally and the council is looking at a permanent solution.”

Chipping Sodbury WI

The Chipping Sodbury WI members were entertained at their latest meeting with a talk called “The Art of Keeping Warm In Bed”.

Memories were jolted for some by photographs of the bleak winters of 1947 and 1962.

At the next meeting the WI members and guests will be entertained by a talk on Body Language which may prove useful in contract negotiations. Part of the meeting will be taken over to discuss this year’s resolutions to be put forward to the Annual General Meeting.

There are a number of women’s groups, especially on social media, trying to change “our lot” in society and by many this is being seen as a new thing. But since its beginnings, the WI has been renowned for its vigorous campaigns and as an organisation we have been ahead on a whole host of issues such as:• Breast Cancer Screening • Equal Pay • Smoking in Public Places Why not join us at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on the 3rd May at 7.30pm to be part of an established organisation that is run by women for all women.

Dismay at plans for Thornbury’s hospital site THORNBURY could have up to just ten NHS community beds within a private nursing home under the latest plans for health and care services in South Gloucestershire.

A long-running campaign for better health provision in the town had led to hopes of more beds for rehabilitation and care, together with outpatient services and improved facilities for GPs. But the plans could see the hospital’s current 20 beds replaced with between just six and ten in a new 70/80-bed care or nursing home, with all rehabilitation beds going to the old Frenchay Hospital site.

Proposals for a new health centre on the Thornbury hospital site have also been met with some scepticism.

Thornbury councillor Maggie Tyrrell, the Liberal Democrat spokeswoman for adults and housing, said: "Those of us who have been fighting for years to get Thornbury the health services it needs have been here before.

“When you find your way through the fog of words and spin, what are they actually promising? When will it be built?

Who will pay for it? I hope that this time words will become reality."

Parliamentary spokeswoman, Claire Young, said: "Thornbury is growing rapidly and local services haven't kept up.

“Many people have told me how difficult it is to see a GP in the town so a new, larger health centre would be great, if the GPs can be found to staff it. I think for many though, it will be a case of we'll believe it when we see it."

Long time hospital campaigner, Councillor Shirley Holloway, said: "Once again Thornbury is being sold down the river by the NHS. This decision is unbelievable. Of course the aim is to treat more people at home, but this is not

appropriate for everyone.”

The hospital currently provides rehabilitation, intermediate care, palliative care, a limited range of consultantled outpatient clinics and community services such as physiotherapy.

The governing body of the new Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group said a full business case on the planned primary and community care hub at Thornbury would be completed by the autumn.

Marlwood academy site chosen for free school A NEW special free school is set to be opened in Alveston within 17 months.

The school, to eventually accommodate 112 youngsters, will be built on the Marlwood School site and will be for children with severe learning difficulties, autism and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Once fully opened, it will provide schooling to children from nursery age to 19 but initially it will offer 32 places for nursery and primary age youngsters from September 2019.

Older pupils will then join the school over a three year period.

The announcement of the school for South Gloucestershire was made last summer after the Government said it would fund its construction.

But there had to be a four-month process involving organisations interested in running it to submit their plans.

Those were then assessed

by South Gloucestershire Council and the Department for Education ahead of final approval from the Education Secretary.

Marlwood is part of the Castle School Education Trust

(CSET) and its chief executive, Will Roberts, said: “Sharing this large site will help to ensure the future sustainability of Marlwood School by reducing overhead costs and bringing much needed capital investment to the site.”

South Gloucestershire was approved for the school because of the continuing growing demand on its existing specialist education services.

Significant numbers of children with learning disabilities are required to travel some distance to schools and services outside the district and the new school will help local families find a place closer to home.

Toby Savage, the council’s Cabinet member for schools, said: “As our population grows, so do the numbers of young people who need specialist support.

“We have already supported the expansion of existing special schools at New Siblands in Thornbury and Warmley Park but they are reaching their maximum capacity.

“Working alongside CSET at Marlwood means we will increase the availability of highsupport school places in brand new, purpose-built facilities.”

n NEWS FURTHER work will be needed in the next year to pursue the rebuilding of Thornbury’s Armstrong Hall to create “a wonderful legacy” for the town.

Public support for a new hall on the current site in Chapel Street led the Armstrong Hall Trust - whose sole managing trustee at present is Thornbury Town Council - to support the proposal.

Community consultation on three options saw 80 per cent (285) of those responding back a rebuild.

A further 18 per cent (62) supported refurbishment of the hall but only four people thought it should be relocated to an extended Turnberries community centre in Bath Road.

Five people either didn’t know, didn’t support any of the three options or came up with another idea.

The hall is in desperate need of an upgrade if it is to remain

A rebuild has been estimated at £4.9 million, while refurbishment would cost £2.85 million.

Although the option for Turnberries would involve building a large extension, there were concerns about insufficient space being available for performances.

Relocation would also involve selling the Armstrong Hall site for redevelopment to help fund the work at Turnberries, which is owned by South Gloucestershire Council.

The council said it would offer a 50 year lease in return for £4 million of investment into the

site, with further negotiations about managing and operating the facility to take place.

Councillor Clive Parkinson, chairman of the Armstrong Hall redevelopment group, said: “On balance, the Armstrong Hall Trust believes that at this time the new build option is the preferred route to take forward.

This is also the clear preferred option of the Thornbury public in their response to the consultations.

“The consultations have thrown up many questions and suggestions and the trust will consider all of these as it takes the project forward.

“The trust also wants to encourage individuals who have

experience or expertise in such a project to join the working group and help the town develop an exciting and appropriate successor to the existing Armstrong Hall that has served the town so well.”

Further work will now be done on design, facilities, governance and financing before final decisions are made and work commissioned.

Thornbury mayor Helen Harrison said the council had made a decision knowing it had the public’s support.

She said: “We hope the public will get involved in this exciting project for Thornbury and create a wonderful legacy for the town.”

The programme has been drawn up to highlight the work of Arthur Sullivan, Irving Berlin, Henry Mancini, Cole Porter, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Kurt Weil.

It will also include A Little Jazz Mass by Bob Chilcott, who has been described as one of the finest choral composers at work in Britain today.

The choristers will be led by conductor James Davies and accompanied by Sue PhillipsonMasters at the concerts in Thornbury’s Cossham Hall on Saturday, May 12, and in Alveston Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 15. Both start at 7.30pm.

Admission is free but retiring collections will be made for Cancer Research UK and Children’s Hospice South West.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style A look at everyday cars on the cusp of becoming modern classics Tesla Model X, 2017 - current: Gullwing Zeitgeist I PROMISED you last year that I’d test a Tesla, and here it is: the striking, premium-priced Model X SUV. If you have upwards of 80 large to spend, need six or seven seats, four wheel drive and insist on being the centre of attention wherever you go powered purely by electricity, this is the only show in town. I also believe that whatever happens to Tesla the company, the Model X will become a classic of sorts; name a gullwing-doored car that hasn’t.

The problem you’ll have is that there are very few examples of the Model X on the used market, and I suspect that a large part of the

appeal for the early-adopter Tesla owner is having a new Model X on the drive. So does it make any sense at all as a used purchase?

In a word: No. But hang on, because I’m biased – my time with a series of AFVs last year was not a universally happy one and I readily acknowledge that electric cars really are the future.

The Model X is a decent piece of design, seating 6 in comfort (and seven at a squeeze) across three rows. The weight of two tons is disguised very well by the most incredibly powerful electric motor I’ve ever come across – driving it is a memorable experience. This is the sort of acceleration that only motorcyclists and racing drivers will be on nodding terms with – 60mph comes up in 3 seconds flat!

As a passenger it doesn’t work so well, because at full power it feels like you’re on an out-of-control

rollercoaster, which is less than pleasant. And believe me, all Tesla drivers will be very keen to show you their Model X’s party trick, so sick bags at the ready.

It is very easy to be dazzled by the interior design, with its large touchscreen interface and broadly competent voice recognition functions. However that would be to forget that this is still an American interpretation of a luxury car, and that means it is not at all luxury by European standards. It’s not even that well made by anyone’s standards. Bits of trim were already loose on my 9 month old test model, and whilst the materials used are fine to the touch, they are most certainly not what you would expect from a car that brand new can easily retail at £100k+. The last truly premium American car was probably the 1956 Mk II Lincoln Continental, and

unfortunately the Model X is miles away from what Maserati or Range Rover offer at this price point.

To reliability, and this is where the Tesla both impresses and frustrates. This example has not been particularly reliable – the doors have caused problems and there have been a series of minor electrical faults. Tesla send fixes automatically via the internet, much like a computer, and when they work it’s great because you sometimes don’t even notice. But when they don’t, you have to take the car to a Tesla Service Centre. Be thankful that you live near Bristol, because our nearest service centre is in Westbury-on-Trym. If you live in Cornwall or Wales you’re nearest centre is….also Westbury-on-Trym.

Scotland has one centre. One! Not being able to take my car to a local garage, any local garage, is a colossal negative for me.

But none of this matters, because the Model X doesn’t really have a competitor yet – if you want one then quite simply nothing else will do. It is the motoring equivalent of the iPhone – people simply must have it. The brand is still so hugely appealing to the gadget hungry wealthy buyer, and I have a suspicion that in twenty years you’ll dine out on stories of when you bought one of the first Model X gullwing Teslas. For everyone else, we’ll listen, envy your bravery and hope you pick up the tab.

New food festival comes to South Gloucestershire THE South Glos Food & Drink Festival takes its bow this month. The event, over the weekend of 19 and 20 May 2018 is being held at the Bristol and Bath Science Park.

Organisers are promising a wide variety of food, from

Indian to Italian and from Jamaican to British. There will also be a focus on drinks with a pop up bar serving artisan gin and locally produced cider.

The Royal Wedding will be shown on a big screen at the event.

Budding archers invited to have a go

A LOCAL archery club is holding a series of taster days to get more people involved in the sport.

Cleve Archers are holding a series of sessions throughout the summer at their shooting range on the outskirts of Winterbourne.

For a donation of £2.50, would-be Robin Hoods will be introduced to the club and the basics of modern-day archery by the club’s qualified coaches. The sessions last 2 hours and take place on the second Tuesday of each month and are open to adults as well as children aged 7 or above.

The next taster session is on Tuesday 8 May at the club’s shooting range at “Up Yonder”, Bury Hill, Moorend, BS16 1SS. Future Taster Sessions will take place on 12 June, 10 July, 14 August and 11 September.

Cleve Archers has been in existence for over 50 years and has recently embarked on an ambitious project to develop their own permanent shooting range.

The club currently rents their ground at Moorend but has purchased a field of their own close by on the Old Bromley Heath Road and has planning permission to create a new shooting range along with a club building.

The new field is currently being levelled and the club hopes to be able to move to its new home in around two years’ time. In addition to its taster sessions, the club also offers 5-week beginner courses. More details can be found on the club’s website.

It can be prepped on the morning you need it, a real bonus if you’re having a few folks over for a bank holiday get together.

Sort out your tomato sauce ahead of the day, prep the meat on the morning and then you’ll be set for a relaxed gathering.

All we need now is the sunshine and the fizz!

To serve • Basic Tomato Sauce – homemade or shop-bought(I use Lloyd Grossman if I’m pushed for time) • Few black olives- optional Preheat oven to 190° c/375°f/gas mark 5 Here’s what you do: 1. Trim away the excess fat from the pork.

2. S lice the pork lengthways down the middle (do not cut all the way through).

3. O pen out the fillet and season inside.

4. L ay the basil leaves down the centre.

5. M ix the cheese, sun-dried tomato paste and mixed herbs

and spread on top of the basil leaves.

6. Press the pork back together.

Wrap the ham around the pork, overlapping, until the length of the fillet is covered. Secure with cocktail sticks or string.

7. Place on a rack in a roasting tin, seam side down, and brush lightly with olive oil.

8. Bake in oven 190°C/375°F/ Gas Mark 5 for 30-40 minutes depending on thickness of the meat until cooked through.

Allow to stand for 10 minutes, covered with foil to keep hot.

9. Serve with tomato sauce to which you have added a few halved black olives, if liked.

10. Serve with green beans or broccoli and some good focaccia or ciabatta bread to mop up the sauce.

Exciting plans for South Gloucestershire health service Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice

AM delighted that our area has finally seen some progress on the redevelopment of our local health services. South

Gloucestershire is set to see some exciting plans to upgrade local

health facilities at Frenchay and Thornbury. The news comes as our local South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group releases its report on the plans for enhanced health facilities for our region.

The proposals will see the redevelopment of the currently vacant site at Frenchay Hospital.

Although it seemed that the community hospital plans were at risk at first, following pressure on North Bristol NHS Trust, we have been able to secure assurances for a health centre at Frenchay. The area will now see the introduction of a Centre of Excellence for Rehabilitative Care, which will incorporate NHS rehabilitation community beds in a single integrated facility.

As your local MP I have worked closely on the campaign to improve health provision for our area, I am therefore delighted that we have been able to ensure local residents will be able to benefit from a health facility at Frenchay.

The new centre for rehabilitation would also help relieve some pressure from Southmead Hospital, providing further, much-needed community health premises.

The proposals for a Centre of Excellence at Frenchay are set to complement the plans for redevelopment of the Thornbury health centre site. The town’s new Integrated Primary & Community Care Hub will include greater primary and GP services, a mental health unit, and a specialist

‘frailty hub’ to cater to the elderly community. Social care beds will also be added to help reduce hospital admissions in wider South Gloucestershire.

These joint plans for Frenchay and Thornbury will help unite our local health services and improve social care provision throughout the region. I am delighted that with the support of the community, we have been able to secure these projects for our area, strengthening health services for local residents across South Gloucestershire. As your MP I will continue to work with the community to ensure these projects are delivered as soon as possible for local residents.

When your love runs dry

LOVING someone can be absolutely exhausting. Don’t let anyone fool you. The kind of love that really makes a difference in this world can quickly suck everything out of you.

Sometimes you can feel like you just don’t have any more love to give. Maybe you’re in a people-intensive job, such as teacher, salesman or waitress, and you come home and think, “I just can’t face another need, another problem or another heartache.” So you just shut down. Or you need to show love to a particular person who is demanding, selfish and never returns your love, and you just think to yourself, “I can’t keep on doing this, I’m done, no more.”

While that’s perfectly natural

and perfectly human, we can only do so much under our own strength, it’s not the standard of love God demonstrates or calls us to in the Bible. The Bible says “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance” (1 Corinthians 13:7). Love never gives up.

How can you have that kind of persistent love for another person?

You have to get refuelled, often.

I remember once I went to a national air show. It was so impressive to see how they can hook up a tanker plane to a jet and refuel it in-flight. Can you imagine someone flying a jet saying, “I don’t need to refuel!” In a long distance flight, a jet has to refuel.

It’s the same with us; loving someone is a marathon and not a sprint. To give the kind of persistent love that God wants you to give, you have to refuel your love tank. Look around at society and you’ll see that it’s littered with debris from relationships that have crashed and burned because people didn’t refuel their love and tried to run on empty.

How do you refuel your love tank? You start by letting God love you. The Apostle John wrote, “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). When you’re worn out, tired and can’t imagine showing love to anyone else, remember that God loved you so much that he sent his Son to die for you. Now that’s real fuel.

n SPORT TORMARTON Under 18s’ final fixtures of the season took them on the road to Longwell Green and firstly to Avonmouth, where the boys battled back from a half time deficit to take all three points on a sticky pitch.

Tormarton took the lead with a penalty from Josh Timbrell within the opening five minutes, after Oskar Earp was upended.

Timbrell has now converted all four of his penalty kicks this season and it should have provided the platform for his team to establish a healthy lead.

Instead they allowed Avonmouth to follow their game plan of soaking up the pressure with their five-man defence and launch long balls to their lone striker. This brought them two

Tormarton forced to come from behind in last two games goals in quick succession to go into the interval with a narrow lead.

The visitors regrouped and began to pass the ball much better, much of it stemming from Tyler Dervishi, which stretched their hosts. First Miles Theobald rifled in the equaliser after good play from Ethan Lloyd before Ross Womack tucked home the winner which Tormarton fully deserved.

Next up was Longwell Green, who play a super brand of

football, so Tormarton needed to be at their very best. On a windy day and with a bumpy surface, the two teams cancelled each other out during the first half with little goalmouth action.

However, Longwell Green scored immediately after the second period began and doubled their lead soon after. The hosts were creating numerous chances by this stage and threatened to post a big score but defenders Cedrick Marasigan, Josh Timbrell and

Fin Crosbee were working hard to nullify the attacks.

Somewhat out of the blue, goalkeeper Elliot Millar’s long goal kick caught the breeze and allowed Ross Womack to sprint through and nod the ball past the onrushing keeper. The trick was then repeated with a long clearance finding Womack whose close control and fast pace enabled him to tuck away the equaliser his team’s general play just about deserved.

Performance day kicks off race track’s summer PETROLHEADS have descended on Castle Combe for a day of high octane action.

The performance day at the racetrack saw an array of club displays, but the highlight was the action on the track.

The public had track time to blow off some steam in their cars, but most were happy to watch the professional drifting demonstrations.

Twirlers make their mark again Yate Star Twirlers Junior Pom team have continued their winning ways at the National Association of Majorettes England competition. The troupe was placed second in the senior section for Dance Team, The Twirlers troupe performing Parade Corp, their Pom routine in the Junior category Traditional Corp and Exhibition routines.

The girls are now back in training in preparation for the May competition where they will be joined by the new Juvenile team who will be competing for the first time both on the floor and supporting their senior team mates.

Troupe leader Michelle Taylor said, "The whole group is looking forward to seeing the Senior, Junior and Juvenile teams perform at the next competition. This is the largest group Yate Star Twirlers will have had performing for a number of years now and we hope they will be successful."

Yate gets summer athletics season going at a sprint THE Yate & District AC’s Sprints and Hurdles Open meeting has become a valued opening fixture for sprinters from across the region, with athletes coming from as far afield as Swansea and Neath in one direction and Taunton in the other.

The event is valued because at the start of the season everyone wants to achieve good times and establish themselves for the more serious competitions ahead. Its popularity has led to organiser Graham Howell restricting the entry to two hundred athletes.

Cold conditions, with occasional drizzly showers however were never going to help the athletes improve on their winter times, but with seventeen heats of 100m and sixteen of

200m, all were guaranteed a competitive race against comparable athletes.

As with all open meetings, race placings matter less than times. Age groups and male and female run in mixed heats, leading to some tight finishes and difficult judgements for the track judges.

In spite of generally middling times some Yate athletes stood out. Under-23 Ben Wells has shown real improvement in recent months and did well in both 60m and 200m. His 60m time of 7.32 secs was the best of a good bunch for Yate, with Rob Phillips and Tom Pallot not far adrift. At 200m he clocked 22.8 secs, marginally ahead of Josh Snook.

n SPORT In the younger under-15 mens catagory, Luke Ball had a busy and largely successful afternoon.

Clocking 7.97 secs in the 60m; 12.8 secs in the 100m, and 13.00 secs in the 80m hurdles, he demonstrated the value of regular indoor competitions.

Phoebe Havard in the under-13 girls, continued the improvement she showed over the winter. She finished in 8.88 secs in the 60m; 14.2 secs in the 100m, and 30.2 secs in the 200m: a very promising start to the summer season.

Dalis Jones ran a good 300m in 45.2 secs. In the same age group, Abi Williams posted good times in 60m, 100m and 200m.

Worthy of a mention was Nils Rehm who runs as a T47 disabled athlete. His 200m time of 24.3 secs must put him in contention for serious races later in the season.

Toby Conibear treated a good crowd to the sight of a hammer thrower sprinting and doing it pretty well.

The Friday before the open event saw the British trials for the Invictus Games, which this year is being held in Sydney, Australia.

Four officials from Yate & District AC were called in to help with the games. Pat and Tony Jefferies and Matt Viner

operated as field officials, while Stuart Nunn was one of the starters.

A highlight of the morning was the visit of Prince Harry, who is the driving force for this event, and his soon to be wife Meghan Markle.

n SPORT Chipping Sodbury 57-7 Longlevens CHIPPING Sodbury Rugby Club is celebrating promotion to the highest level they’ve ever competed in after being crowned champions of the Gloucester Premier League.

The title was clinched at home against Longlevens on a heady day for players and officials.

Longlevens came to the Ridings determined not to be on the wrong end of a pounding like like they suffered against Sodbury at Christmas, and made the first 25 minutes very uncomfortable for the hosts.

Sodbury were forced into conceding penalties which made it hard for them to leave their own 22, never mind the half.

The visitors scored the game’s first try, which focused the home team, but even then it was a bit of a struggle to set up any kind of camp in Longlevens half.

Five minutes later after a 5-metre lineout, Dave Guest scored as the pack rumbled forwards.

Another long-standing member of the team, Lee Ralph, is fast becoming a creative force in open play. In the middle of the pitch he stripped the ball in the tackle and showed a dazzling turn of pace. The ball eventually found Edgar who ran 30 metres to score and make it 19 – 7 at halftime.

Just two minutes into the second half, Sodbury’s Joe Horton set up a ruck and once he was back on his feet, scooped up the ball and scampered the final

10 metres to score.

There was a ten-minute break in the scoring but the next try brought up the hat-trick for Edgar. After some wonderful, balanced running from Bradley and Horton, Edgar took up the challenge and covered the remaining 40 metres to score under the posts.

After six rampaging rucks Longlevens lost the ball and Sodbury were quick on the counter attack. Edgar reaped the benefit of his supporting run, touching down for his fourth try of the game, making a total of 10 tries in 4 games.

Bradley was next to score after a break up the centre of the pitch by Dom Pullen, who

made a speedy recovery from a shoulder injury sustained against Frampton Cotterel.

Scrum-half Kiddie Sheikh reacted quickly to a turnover at the line out to find Bradley with a fabulous pass. After a ruck, Bradley was on hand again to score under the posts.

The final try went to Jon Cook after a tapped penalty and another long pass. With the game won, the promotion celebrations could begin.

After a 31-19 win on the last day of the season at Spartans, Chipping Sodbury won the league with a ten point cushion over second place Barton Hill.

Mid table position for Yate WITH three matches of the season remaining, Yate Town are in a comfortable mid-table position, a major improvement on their form last season.

Torrential rain caused both of their Easter matches to be postponed, and Yate resumed after this enforced break with a visit to play-off contenders Winchester City, and without several key players.

The changes inevitably disrupted the team and they failed to reproduce their best form. Goals from Oli Bailey and Jamie Barron gave the Citizens a 2-0 lead at the break, and they added further goals from Adam Tomasso and Simba Miambo during the second half. Yate kept battling and were rewarded with a consolation goal just before the end when Trey Anderson netted his first goal of the season, becoming the nineteenth player to find the net for Town this season.

Yate then made a long midweek journey to Barnstaple Town, and came away with all three points after a deserved 3-2 victory. The home side opened the scoring with a deflected effort from Billy Hopcroft, but Yate equalised within ten minutes when Anderson netted from close range. Barnstaple regained the lead through Harry Stevens, but a well taken goal by Ben Brooks brought Yate back on level terms before half time. Yate gradually gained control in the second half but had to wait until the 88th minute for their winner.

Town played their first home match for four weeks when they entertained Slimbridge, and the points were shared. The visitors took the lead after a quiet opening period when Jamie Martin scored after a quick counter attack, and thereafter they concentrated on protecting their lead. A somewhat lack lustre match was enlivened with a quarter of an hour remaining when Slimbridge only partially

cleared another Town attack.

The ball fell to Adam Price who sent a swerving, dipping volley into the roof of the net from over 30 yards, and this “goal of the season” contender earned Yate a 1-1 draw.

Highly placed AFC Totton then visited Lodge Road and again proved to be a wellorganised team. Chances throughout were at a premium, with most danger emanating from set pieces at either end.

The match appeared destined to end goalless, but with 15 minutes remaining a dead ball situation

proved decisive when Totton’s powerful central defender Callum Chugg powered in a header from a corner to give the visitors a 1-0 win.

Yate suffered a second defeat in a row when they travelled to Paulton Rovers, only to come away on the wrong side of the 2-0 scoreline.

Yate’s youth team, under the guidance of Paul Henderson, have again reached the Final of the GFA Under 18 Shield where they will play Gloucester City at Almondsbury on Thursday 3rd May.

Sodbury grab the points with late winner Chipping Sodbury Town 2-1 Wellington JUST two points separated the sides before the kick off of this Toolstation Western Football League match.

A scrappy start to the match gave little indication of what was ahead with both sides struggling to maintain possession.

Sodbury’s George Box recorded the games first shot on goal after 7 minutes when he volleyed just wide after some enterprising wing play down the visitors left put him in shooting distance on the edge of the penalty area.

As the sun shone for a fleeting moment the home side began to use their wingers to good effect. A pinpoint pass from half way found the Sodbury wing back in clear space behind the Wellington defence and his short

cross found Box who slotted home from close range to give Sodbury a 1-0 lead after 10 minutes.

Wellington immediately went on the offensive but a tame shot from the edge of the box and a half-hearted appeal for a penalty after a collision left the score unchanged.

The game continued as a struggle for dominance until Ian Bellinger levelled the scores.

The Wellington player received the ball just outside the Sodbury penalty area and with little room for manoeuvre he deftly switched from left to right foot and slotted home from 15 yards out.

Both teams found it difficult to keep possession from thereon with passes misplaced and few chances created for the final 20 minutes of the first half.

After a largely incident free first period, the second half kicked off with the teams in

determined mood and a series of mistimed challenges by both sides raised the temperature for a few minutes as each tried to gain the upper hand.

The game became an endto-end encounter. Wellington wasted a good chance on 10 minutes when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area but the cross into a crowded penalty box failed to find its mark and the ball was easily cleared.

Just a minute later a oneon-one with the home keeper was cleared and the resultant long throw-in by Wellington was claimed comfortably by Burgess.

George Box nearly added to his earlier goal when he found himself one-on-one with the Wellington keeper but the 50-50 went the way of the visitors.

A couple of Sodbury attacks flattered to deceive and despite home pressure the Wellington

defence held firm. With just 20 minutes left the visitors looked the more likely to take the win.

Following a Sodbury attack the ball was cleared down the right and the Wellington forward rounded the full back but was brought down for another free kick just outside the area. Again the kick was wasted.

The game was still very much end to end, but the visitors were the more confident and but for some excellent goalkeeping by Burgess they may well have pushed ahead.

With three minutes of added on time played a break down the Wellington right started by George Box found the Sodbury winger who sent in a cross which was only parried by the visitors keeper and Box finished off the move with a shot from close range to give the home side a 2-1 victory and all three points.

Racing gets underway at Castle Combe THE Castle Combe 2018 season made its traditional start with Howard's Day. The persistent heavy rain made the morning qualifying sessions tricky for both competitors and spectators, but despite the weather a good crowd turned out for the opening meeting, and with the weather improving slightly after lunch, they were treated to a great day of racing.

The Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship featured several local competitors including Chris Hignell from Yate in his Class D Peugeot 106, Chipping Sodbury's Nathan Nicholls in his Class C Citroen Saxo and Dursley's Alex Kite in Class A with his Audi TT, Kite, who only sat in his Audi TT the day before the race, finished the race second in Class A and third overall. "It was an amazing day for us as we had only tested the car the previous day so to be able to put the
