Search for sex attacker POLICE believe the same man may have sexually assaulted two girls in separate incidents in Yate.

Officers have released a picture of a man they want to trace, based on the description of the victim of one of the assaults.

They say that in both cases girls were "touched inappropriately", and the offences are being investigated as sexual assault by touching.

On both occasions police say the victims ran away and were not injured.

The image officers have released is based on the description provided by the victim of the first incident.

He is white, in his 20s and around 5ft 9in tall, with blond hair.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a light coat with red, blue and white colour blocks, dark trousers and blue trainers.

Police are calling on anyone who recognises the man in the image or has information which could help in either investigation to call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5222 011 047 for the Slimbridge Close incident or 5222 067 867 for the Sandhurst incident.

From page 1 The huge limb fell from an oak tree, which is believed to be around 350 years old, in the playground of St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Sundridge Park in August 2019.

St Paul’s Catholic Primary School head teacher Maxine Sewell said: "This was the result of the natural phenomenon of 'summer limb drop' where a tree sacrifices a large branch in order to preserve itself.

"We had to have some remedial work done to it in order to balance it up and we were left with a large timber log.

"After raising the money to do so, we commissioned local woodcarver Andy O'Neill to create something special for our children and hope that it will last another 350 years.

"Andy himself is a former pupil of St Paul's (albeit 50+ years ago) and remembers playing around the tree himself!"

The seven-seat bench has back panels carved with the creation story.

Ukrainians welcomed to South Gloucestershire MORE than 100 Ukrainian refugees have been given a warm welcome to South Gloucestershire at an event held at Yate Fire Station.

The aim was to welcome the refugees to the district, and provide an opportunity for them and their local sponsors to meet others in a similar situation.

The event was organised by South Gloucestershire Council, whose Homes for Ukraine team gave the Ukrainian people advice on services and support available.

A vicar and representatives from the police and fire services were also on hand, as well as an NHS vaccination team from UWE giving first, second and booster doses of the covid vaccine to a "significant number" of attendees.

The council said the event "saw lots of conversations taking place and new friendships being formed between the Ukrainian guests and among the different South Gloucestershire sponsors".

Cabinet councillor for public health Franklin Owusu-Antwi said: “It was excellent to meet and formally welcome our new Ukrainian residents to South Gloucestershire and to thank their hosts for opening their homes to them.

The welcome event at Yate Fire Station "We want to do all we can to help our guests settle in, feel safe and supported and to quickly feel at home in South Gloucestershire."

Avon Fire & Rescue Service chief fire officer Simon Shilton said: “It was an honour to have welcomed our new Ukrainian residents, and their host families, to Yate Fire Station. We work hard to help everyone feel safe in our community, and I hope this event

went some way in helping our Ukrainian guests feel welcomed and reassured that they are safe when living and working in our area."

Memorials for muchloved Molly the Tesco cat A CAT who captured shoppers' hearts at Yate's Tesco superstore has had a plaque and bench installed in her honour.

Molly the Yate Tesco cat, who had her own Facebook page with more than 4,000 members, died after being involved in an accident at the end of April.

Tributes poured in after Molly, who was a week short of her 10th birthday, was run over.

She lived nearby but had spent years patrolling the car and trolley parks, befriending shoppers and exploring their bags.

Molly's owner, who asked not to be named, said: "She was the most amazingly spirited, mischievous, adventurous, stubborn, cantankerous, grumpy, friendly and loving animal on the planet and I know how much joy she brought to everyone, which was why I never clipped her wings.

"She finally used up the last of her nine million lives."

People left cards and flowers at the Tesco Extra store at Yate Shopping Centre after the accident in an "outpouring of love and support".

Now Tesco has put up plaques next to the trolley area Molly loved to frequent and on a bench outside the store's exit.

Future of McColl's stores is secured THE future of three McColl's stores in Yate and Chipping Sodbury appears to have been assured after the convenience store business was rescued by supermarket giant Morrisons.

The board of McColl's started moves to put the business into administration on May 6, after its lenders withdrew their financial support for the business.

It put the future of more than 1,100 shops across the country, including the branches in Cranleigh Court Road, Abbotswood Centre and Broad Street in doubt.

But after a bidding war with EG Group, which owns rival

supermarket group Asda as well as thousands of petrol stations and convenience stores across the UK and abroad, Morrisons bought the business from administrators PwC. All 16,000 McColl's staff will be transferred to Morrisons, which was the group's biggest wholesale supplier, and the supermarket says all stores will continue to trade.

Around 270 McColl's stores were already operating under the Morrisons Daily format, and now more are expected to be rebranded. Other brands that were part of the McColl group included Clark Retail, Dillons Stores and Smile Stores.

Morrisons chief executive David Potts said: "This transaction offers stability and continuity for the McColl’s business and, in particular, a better outcome for its colleagues and pensioners.

"We all look forward to welcoming many new colleagues into the Morrisons business and to building on the proven strength of the Morrisons Daily format."

Morrisons will pay off "secured lenders and preferential creditors" in full under the deal, known as a "pre-pack administration" because it was finalised as soon as the administration took effect.

Other creditors will receive some of what they are owed from McColl's reported £170 million of debts.

It has also been reported that Morrisons stood to lose £130m from its existing wholesale supply agreement to McColl’s stores if a deal had not been agreed.

McColl’s two pension schemes, with 2,000 members, will be taken on by the Morrisons Group.

Joint administrator Rob Lewis said thousands of jobs had been saved.

Moves to protect future of historic Yate pub A HISTORIC Yate pub could be formally registered as a community asset to protect it from developers.

The White Lion has just been sold after sitting empty for more than two years.

Estate agents Fleurets have confirmed that the 16th century building on Church Road has been sold after being put on the market for £725,000.

While the new owner is reported to be another pub company, both the agent and previous owner Stonegate declined to give any details when asked by the Voice. No major chain or trade body we approached has been able to confirm who the buyer is.

Concerned that the pub could end up in the hands of a developer, Yate Town Council has applied for the pub to be formally registered as an Asset of Community Value with South Gloucestershire Council.

If approved, its status would be recorded at the Land Registry, and the new owner would have to inform South Gloucestershire Council if the pub was to be resold. Local organisations would then have six months to raise the funds to buy it.

Town councillor Chris Willmore said they applied for the listing because of concerns the pub could be redeveloped in the future and turned into housing – or have houses built on the car park.

She said: "It is such an important pub and location, and we want to ensure it remains as a community asset.

"It is great news if it has been purchased by another pub chain,

The ACV listing would not affect the current sale, which is listed by the agents as being subject to contract, but could protect the building in the future.

Chris said the town council had not heard who the new owner is, but hopes the buyer will keep the car park – and not try to build on it.

She said: "We know some developers might try to build houses on the land, but we have made the car park part of the listing, as it has been used for the community in the past, for St George’s Day parades and Morris Dancing.”

Fellow town councillor Alan Monaghan said: “It has been trading since 1644 – it is of great

"Many of the sites completed have some visual defects and the new surface is starting to strip off and in some cases form holes.

"The council wasn't involved with sourcing this material."

Deputy mayor Ben Nutland said “At a time when so many historical buildings are being knocked down or changed beyond recognition, it is incredibly important we protect the history of the town and ensure it for future generations.”

Historic England lists the White Lion as a Grade II listed building, dating back to the late 16th century, and it occupies what was a significant site for the old turnpike road toll system of the 18th and 19th centuries, at a key road junction.

The pub has room for 200 diners inside, and ten guest bedrooms across two floors, and boasts many period features including beamed ceilings and old fireplaces.

Charging confusion for new park and ride YATE'S new park and ride has left electric car users puzzled – and there are concerns that confusion is putting people off using it.

The site is aimed at commuters and shoppers travelling into Bristol – an hour each way on the bus - into central Yate or using the nearby station.

But a popular phone app for charging electric cars says that anyone who leaves one plugged in for more than 90 minutes will be fined £10.

South Gloucestershire Council has asked for the app to be updated, while councillors and the AA have called on the council to put up new signs making it clear electric car drivers won’t be charged for overstaying.

The £4.5 million park and ride was opened next to the council’s HQ on Badminton Road in February.

As an added incentive, drivers who plug in a car will be able to park for free instead of paying the £2.60 a day parking fee due to be introduced for other drivers later this year.

But one of the most popular apps for electric car charging, Zap-Map, lists the park and ride as having a £10 fine for anyone staying more than 90 minutes in an electric vehicle bay.

It says this charge is only for 'rapid' charging, which can

charge the average electric car in under an hour – but there are no rapid chargers at the park and ride.

AA head of roads policy Jack Cousens said: “The new slow charging capability at Yate Park & Ride is to be commended, however this good work could be rapidly undone if left unresolved.

“EV drivers could become confused unless the situation is clarified and the signage is updated.”

A council spokesperson said

officers had contacted Zap-Map to get the information changed and stressed: "There are no overstay fees associated with the EV charging points at Yate Park and Ride. "We are aware ZapMap shows that there is a £10 charge for staying longer than 90 minutes in these spaces, but this is incorrect as it only applies to rapid charging points. We have raised it with them directly and asked them to update it.”

Yate town councillor Chris Willmore, who has an electric car, says the confusion is putting drivers off. She says many EV owners look up charging points on Zap App and use it as a guide, and while they know it sometimes has mistakes, the council could help clear up any confusion.

Chris said: "We wrote to South Glos to ask them to change the signs weeks ago. It is not rocket science.

“All we want is clarity."

An eel on an eel tile, which has cones to help it climb weirs

Eels given helping hand WORK is underway to make it easier for fish and eels to swim up and down the River Frome.

The Environment Agency has started a project to modify weirs on a stretch of the river running through Yate.

The work, on four weirs between Cranleigh Court Road and Goose Green Way, involves cutting notches into three of them.

The fourth is being fitted with eel tiles and baffles.

Eel tiles are blank on one side and have small cones on the other, facing the wall.

Agency experts say that because eels are long and thin, they are not very good swimmers but are very good at wriggling and crawling and can use the gaps between the cones to wriggle through and climb over the weir.

Baffles are long strips of recycled plastic attached to the front of the weir which help to concentrate flows of water by channelling it through notches cut into the plastic, increasing its depth and reducing the speed of the flow, so fish can swim through the notches and over the weir.

The aim of the project is to ensure more fish and eels can reach the more than five miles of river upstream of the weirs, which includes important spawning grounds for some fish species.

This in turn should help increase the number and variety of fish found locally.

The agency says Frome, which flows from Dodington to Bristol's Floating Harbour, is home to brown trout, stone loach, minnow, stickleback, bullhead and the endangered European eel.

The weirs are part of a flood defence scheme built in the 1960s, which funnels high flows of water past Yate to reduce the risk of flooding in the town.

A spokesperson said: "The river was significantly shortened and straightened when the flood scheme was built, and the weirs help prevent erosion of the riverbed."

European eels spawn in the Sargasso Sea in the North Atlantic, floating in their larval form on ocean currents towards Europe.

Once they reach freshwater estuaries like the Bristol Channel, they grow into elvers and swim up rivers, including the Frome, where they spend up to 20 years living, feeding and maturing.

They then swim all the way back to the Sargasso Sea, more than 3,000 miles away, to lay their eggs.

Environment Agency Bristol Frome project manager Heather Barker said work would make the Frome "a better place for people and wildlife".

She said: "The weirs along this stretch of river are surrounded by public open space and alongside the Frome Valley Walkway.

"We hope the local community will appreciate the work we are doing to improve the local environment and value the river and its habitats."

Burglary shocks charity shop staff BURGLARS broke in to a Yate charity shop and smashed a globe used to collect donations.

Staff and volunteers at the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity shop in North Walk say they have been left shocked and disappointed by the theft of money given to support medics providing critical emergency care across the region.

Shop manager Marwa Bahssali said up to £100 in cash had been taken in the burglary, which she discovered when she opened up the shop on May 3, after the bank holiday weekend.

No high-value items were taken, and the shop's tills were empty.

Marwa believes the thief may have visited the shop before, as the globe could not be seen from outside.

GWAAC provides emergency specialist critical care at the scene of accidents and medical incidents. Although it is part of the regional 999 response service, it is funded entirely by charitable donations.

The Yate shop opened in August last year and GWAAC says it recently had its best week ever in terms of takings, which usually average over £400 a day.

Marwa said: “Something like this is heart-breaking for our wonderful team of staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly and donate so much time to running our charity shops.

"But we’re determined not to let this affect us. We are of course tightening our security, but we are open for business, and we’d like to thank everyone in the community for their continued support."

Police have been informed of the incident and Yate Shopping Centre staff are looking through CCTV footage to establish when the break-in happened.

POLICE say the large bronze statue of a hare was taken overnight between May 7 and 8 from a trade stand at the event, held near Chipping Sodbury.

Made by Somerset artist Jan Sweeney, it was on a hamstone (limestone) base and was 135cm (about 4ft 5in) tall in height.

Acting Head Teacher Sarah Titley said: "She was hoping for £50 to sponsor one animal, but our children raised an amazing £1643.45!

"We are very proud, and each of our six classes has chosen an animal to sponsor for two years."

Teenage boy attacked on bus A MAN has been questioned by police over an alleged assault on a teenager on a bus travelling between Bristol and Chipping Sodbury.

Avon and Somerset police issued CCTV images and an appeal after the 15-year-old boy was hit "multiple times" on a Y5 service.

The victim needed hospital treatment after the incident, which happened on April 12 at about 7pm between Staple Hill and Pucklechurch, where the attacker was ordered off the bus.

Police say the boy is now recovering at home but still needs treatment for his injuries.

A spokesperson said: "The victim was approached by a man who appeared intoxicated and demanded money.

"When the victim refused, the man struck him to the face multiple times, causing facial injuries which required hospital treatment.

"The offender got off the bus in the Shortwood Road area of Pucklechurch after the driver ordered him to leave."

Following an appeal in May, which was shared on the Voice website, police say more than 25 people got in touch providing a man's name in connection with the images.

A spokesperson added: "A 37-year-old man has since voluntarily attended a police station for interview.

"We'd like to thank all those who contacted us as well as everyone who helped by sharing our appeal."

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and anyone with information who has not yet contacted the police should call 101 and quote the crime reference number 5222 086 969.

The Y5 passes through Eastville, Fishponds and Staple Hill before heading to Pucklechurch, Westerleigh, Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

Festivals set to pull in the crowds Raysfield School, Fascinating Rhythm, ChoirJam and Yate Community Choir.

Event director Robert Goodwin said: "We are delighted to be able to stage the Yate Rocks...In the Park festival for the Yate Community this year after two years of cancellations and restrictions imposed by the global covid pandemic."

YATE and Chipping Sodbury will host three festivals over the space of four weekends, with some well-loved events bouncing back from the pandemic.

Chipping Sodbury Festival First to come is the Chipping Sodbury Festival, which will span two weekends between June 10 and June 19.

The festival was cancelled due to the pandemic in 2020 and made a limited return last year.

But its trademark Street Fayre and Carnival could not take place and its return this year will give organisers Chipping Sodbury Lions Club a chance to belatedly celebrate its 50th anniversary, which fell in 2021.

procession starting at 3pm.

Yate Rocks…in the Park On June 25-26 Kingsgate Park in Yate will be the venue for the 15th Yate Rocks…in the Park Festival.

Returning after the pandemic, the first day of the festival will feature bands Rose Bruford, Limited Edition, Beacon Rise, Longshots, Uncle Buck, Rugged Union, 51 Degrees and Dock Roc, performing alongside local dance groups including ROKH Dance, 5678 Dance, Burlesque Chair Dancing, Stapleton Dance Group, Redds Dance and Street Cred.

There will be stalls, activities and games at the event, which runs from midday to 8pm.

The following day from 10.30am-noon, the Praise in the Park event will include an outdoor service buy local churches.

In the afternoon, from 12.15-4.30pm, Picnic in the Park will include the Great Choir Showcase, a sing-along for choirs

Sodbury Fest July 2 will see a one-day revival of the successful Chipping Sodbury Beer & Music Festival in its new guise as Sodbury Fest.

The 12-hour event at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club's ground at the Ridings will run from 11am to 11pm, with music from Yasmine K-D, Decanter, Room 6, The Peppercorns, the Community Steel Band, Freeze, Street Cred, the FooPhonics, For The Record, and Liquor & Poker.

Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club has taken over the running of the festival from Yate Rotary Club, which organised it before the pandemic, and the music will have its traditional accompaniments of beer, cider, gin and food.

Festival music coordinator Nick Cragg said: “From a local singer-songwriter performing her debut album through a steel band providing Caribbean influences to an evening of rock anthems, it is promising to be a brilliant day with something for everyone.

"It will be great to get everyone back together again at this local event."

May Day revels return to Iron Acton TRADITIONAL May Day celebrations returned to Iron Acton after two years were lost to the pandemic.

The traditional celebration, with maypole dancing on the village green, draws hundreds of visitors but had to be cancelled in 2020 and last year due to covid restrictions.

This year it was back, with community organisations working together to prepare the procession of the May Queen, May King and their entourage from the Lamb Inn along the High Street to the green.

As well as the fairground rides, stalls and art exhibition the central show ring included taekwondo and dog obedience displays, marching and several dance groups, including Morris.

But none were more keenly anticipated than the maypole dancing by children of Iron Acton and North Road primary schools.

Iron Acton primary executive head teacher Mike Riches said: "This is the first time in three years that our children have had the chance to dance around the maypole and get involved in this important historic community event in the village.

"The children and their teachers prepared for weeks to demonstrate several different maypole dances and they pulled it off exceptionally well.

"They paused to show the patterns they had made whilst weaving in and out. They then turned around and unwound their ribbons all without a hitch!

"Hundreds of people came to watch the special event.

"There was also a demonstration from our taekwondo club, with leader Karen Parker.

The event raised money for local community organisations, St Peter's Hospice and the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

In my search to solve this problem, my practice has adopted several cutting-edge non-invasive technologies that initiate healing, improve function and manage pain in the most chronic of conditions, be it arthritic, old injury or post- surgical pain. We use a combination of MBST cell regeneration from Germany, Class IV Laser from the States, and new to market pain-management device Biowave to provide a multilayered approach to healing and painmanagement. ■

CASE STUDY 1 I saw Jeremy, who is an interesting MBST success story, on Monday for a follow-up. He’s a fit, strong chap who was really struggling with an unstable lower back in 2018/19. I must have seen him 20-30 times that year trying to manage relapse after relapse. After taking a closer look at his X-ray we noted a distinct degradation of his L5 disc and joint - and therefore found the cause of his instability. He was on a path to surgical intervention, so we decided on a course of spinal cartilage regeneration in 2019. Since then his back has stabilised significantly with only one minor episode in the last 3 years, a huge decrease in pain and about 50 fewer visits to the chiropractor! We’re both really happy with this outcome.

CASE STUDY 2 I’ve just had the pleasure of discharging George completely pain free, 5 months after having MBST for arthritis of his right shoulder and elbow. He’s gone from constant aching, night pain and difficulty even lifting a cup of tea to feeling 100% again! He’s back to bowls and lifting a pint! Lovely chap, great outcome.

Call for bus rethink

CHILDREN at a Yate primary school are enjoying exploring a new outdoor area for its youngest pupils.

A new sheltered canopy area with a sand and water station, investigation area, a maths outdoor classroom and a creative space has been added to the climbing equipment, a stage and music stand, a sheltered hut, a mud kitchen, literacy shed and a role play Woodlands Primary School pupils in the new construction site at the outdoor learning area school in Sundridge Park.

And materials from an old climbing frame have been 'up-cycled' to create a brand new log seating area.

Head teacher Rachel Dean said: "Our outdoor space not only encourages a healthy and active lifestyle, it also offers endless opportunities which spark children’s problem solving skills, helps to develop their imagination and nurtures their creativity."

The school also recently held a nature-themed science week studying the growth of plants and animals, growing cress and looking ways to introduce plants into the playground.

METRO Mayor Dan Norris has called on bus operator First to reassess recent timetable changes after passengers complained they had been left delayed or stranded.

New timetables were introduced at the end of April to improve reliability as the company continues to deal with the impact of the pandemic on passenger and driver numbers.

Changes included the withdrawal of the Y2 service which linked Yate to Bristol via Downend and Fishponds, and cutbacks to the Y4, which now no longer runs to the town centre.

Mr Norris said he had heard reports of "chaos at the beginning" of the new timetables, with long delays and people who needed to travel from Yate to Fishponds having to catch a train into Bristol and then a bus back out.

He said transport campaigners had also reported cancellations, cuts and delays on several services.

Mr Norris said: "We need to know if this is teething troubles or terminal.

“We were told that with a new timetable in place it would be much easier for the buses to run on time. But that doesn’t appear to be what’s happening. Passengers are frustrated, and even worse, angry.

So we need the bus companies to revisit their plans and reassess them with urgency.”

A spokesperson for First West of England said the first week of the changes was "always going to be difficult", but added: "Since then we have seen a marked improvement in reliability.

"We still have some challenges in Bristol due to the ongoing driver shortage but we are actively recruiting and filling that shortfall.

"We apologise to any customers who have been inconvenienced in recent weeks and want to reassure them that we are doing everything possible to provide a reliable service at this time."

Walkers raise £2,000

School nurse service success

A TEAM of walkers from Yate are celebrating after raising more than £2,000 with a 100-mile coastal trek.

Ian and Chris Bright, Tim Fletcher, Marc Laird and Greg Wood walked the Jurassic Coast from Old Harry Rocks at Swanage, Dorset, to Exmouth in Devon over five days at the end of April and beginning of May. They did it to raise The Yate team walked 100 miles in five money for the Christ The days Rock Christian Fellowship's work in Korce, Albania, helping a local church run an orphanage, street kids centre, elderly people's home and safe house.

Ian, wife Karen and sons Jacob, 16, and Ethan, 12, have been going out to Albania for the last 10 years in the summer running football camps for children in the villages.

The money raised will buy football equipment and arts and craft materials they will take over this summer, after missing the last two years due to the pandemic.

Ian said: "It was not as easy as we thought but great to achieve this challenge with these great people."

A NEW service enabling children and young people aged from 11 to 19 to text a school nurse for advice has been launched.

The ChatHealth messaging service allows children who may not feel comfortable discussing issues face-to-face to receive School nurses who are answering health confidential help on issues questions by text. The service is being run across the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire area by the Community Children’s Health Partnership, led by Sirona Care & Health, and is funded by local councils.

In its first four days it received more than 70 messages.

The ChatHealth line is open from 9am-5pm during term time and school holidays, excluding bank holidays, and can be reached by texting 07312 263093.

ChatHealth, which has been funded by local authorities across BNSSG, is running alongside the existing school nursing service with the aim of reaching even more young people.

Sirona acting chief executive Julie Sharma said: “ChatHealth will improve the reach, timeliness and efficiency of our services and it is more age appropriate for young people.

“They can contact one of our School Nurses in a matter of seconds by sending a text, rather than waiting to see a health care professional or being referred, so it is quick and easy for them to access the support they need.”

Streets close as area gears up for Platinum Jubilee STREET parties will take in roads across the Yate and Sodbury area over the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend.

South Gloucestershire Council has published a list of almost 100 closures approved across the district so that residents can organise their own parties.

Events range from large-scale events like the Chipping Sodbury Big Jubilee Lunch to parties for neighbours to celebrate together outside their homes.

At the Chipping Sodbury event, on June 5 from noon to 6pm, families are invited to bring picnics, tables and chairs to watch live bands and dancing, entertainers and activities in Broad Street. There will be a children's fancy dress competition and baking contest.

In Yate, on Friday June 3 there will be a Platinum Jubilee event on St Mary’s Green from 10.30am-4pm, with music and storytelling, stalls and food themed from the 1950s and 1970s.

The beach at Yate Shopping Centre will host a children’s craft day on June 2, a steel band on June 3, wartime music on June 4 and a children's party on June 5.

Elsewhere in the district, Thornbury High Street will host a party on Friday June 3 with live music and displays of vintage cars and

Remembering royal celebrations AS the Queen's 70-year reign is celebrated, David Hardill looks at past jubilees.

ROYAL celebrations have been a feature of life in Yate since the 19th century.

There were Golden and Diamond Jubilee celebrations locally during Queen Victoria’s reign, in 1887 and 1897.

Leading families at Yate supported the refurbishment of St Mary’s Church in 1897, enabling the restoration of the interior and roof, as well as the additions of the pinnaces to the church tower.

Inevitably, we have more evidence of royal celebrations linked to the present monarch.

Highworth Crescent Silver Jubilee celebrations, 1977 there were tins of chocolate and chocolate bars for a significant proportion of youngsters.

Chocolate was still very much a treat and sweets had only come off rationing in 1949.

Royal celebrations have always spawned some street parties. In 1953 there were several around Yate and Sodbury, in a combined population of little more than 3,000.

The 1977 Silver Jubilee was undoubtedly the most prolific for

street parties. They seemed to be everywhere, with 57 recorded road closures for royal celebrations from June 4 to 7.

Some streets, like Highworth Crescent in South Yate, had two parties.

At this time Yate was encumbered with a reputation for being soulless and lacking community spirit, but the Jubilee clearly demonstrated the opposite was the case.

New community groups came to the fore. The parish council held exhibitions at both the Parish Hall and YMCA on Station Road. The breadth of community life was on display, including churches, women’s groups and clubs, while Newman’s and Jackson’s factories offered behind-the-scenes tours.

Chipping Sodbury offered a more traditional street fayre, carnival and vicarage tea party over the Silver Jubilee weekend, while on the St John’s school field there was the obligatory 1970s fun day, It’s a Knock Out.

We need to start recycling more of our plastic WE should be immensely proud that South Gloucestershire Council has one of the best recycling rates in the South West, and indeed the entire country.

Our area was recently placed in the top five council areas of its kind for recycling rates, reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill each year.

However, in South Gloucestershire there is a glaring omission in our recycling ability, as soft plastics are currently not collected as part of our household waste.

Whilst cans, cardboard and clothes all regularly line our streets on collection day, so many everyday items, such as plastic bags, crisp packets, pet food pouches and yoghurt pots, are not collected.

This is why I have launched a

soft plastic campaign, with the support of the community, to secure this type of recycling for our towns and villages.

Whilst some local shops are already offering this service, for many of our rural communities this is difficult to access regularly, and household collections would dramatically improve our recycling rates.

Excitingly, South Gloucestershire Council have submitted a bid for our area to be included in a pilot scheme that is due to be launched, which would see soft plastic recycling trialled in our area, with collections from the kerbside.

This would be a real, positive step to help reduce household waste and protect our environment.

to ask for full support for our local bid, I have also met with the Minister for Nature Recovery and the Domestic Environment, so we can ensure South Gloucestershire Council is part of this exciting programme.

We have an opportunity to build on our already-impressive recycling record and I will keep our community updated on the progress and hopeful success of our bid.

Nationally, work is continuing to tackle plastic waste, and the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan has committed to work towards all plastic packaging placed on the market being recyclable or reusable by 2025.

Table cricketers win place at Lord's final PUPILS from Brimsham Green School in Yate have played their way to a final at the home of cricket.

The school's team won the regional final of the Lord’s Taverners National Table Cricket championship, held at Warwickshire County Cricket Club's Edgbaston ground, to book their place for the final at Lord's in London on June 17.

Table cricket is an adapted version of cricket, played on a table tennis table.

Aimed at 8 to 25 year olds, it is designed to be inclusive for young people with a wide range of learning and complex physical disabilities.

Youth cricket and disability sport charity the Lord’s Taverners organises the sport with county cricket boards.

A spokesperson said: "Many young people living with severe physical or learning disabilities, particularly wheelchair users, have limited opportunities to

The young people taking part have been some of the most significantly affected by the pandemic, due to them being deemed vulnerable and therefore limited by some of the more restrictive lockdown measures. Table Cricket has long

been a fantastic outlet for these young people and the return of competitions is a very positive step forward for everyone who plays the game.

Brimsham Green beat seven other county champion schools to win their trip to Lord's.

Teacher Liza Wilby said: "Table cricket means so much to our pupils because it is a competitive sport that they can take part in, regardless of their disability.

"Through competing at the county and regional tournaments, they have met so many people with different abilities, and seen that there is no limit to what they can achieve."

The event was supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery, which has helped to fund the table cricket programme.

She’s teamed up with Yate & Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

Lemon curd for the Queen's trifle AFTER a bit of a build up, what with royal horse shows, the opening of the new Elizabeth line and other celebrations across the country, we are now ready to celebrate 70 years of the Queen’s glorious reign.

After all the turmoil of the last two years, it’s great to have a real occasion to celebrate.

Over 5,000 people entered the competition to find the perfect

pudding to serve to the Queen.

The winner was a lemon, Swiss roll and amaretti trifle, made with home-made lemon curd.

Lemon Curd Makes about 450g/1lb Ingredients: Large eggs – 2 Large egg yolks – 2 Lemons –approx 3. You will need 150mls of juice in total.

Caster sugar – 200g/7oz.

Unsalted butter -115g/4oz Here’s what you do: Choose a medium-sized heatproof bowl to fit snugly over the saucepan used for cooking the curd, which will have simmering water in it.

Half fill the saucepan with water and bring to simmering point.

Meanwhile, scrub the lemons (see Cook’s Tip) and finely grate the zest into your chosen bowl.

Use a sharp knife to halve the lemons and squeeze the juice. Add to the bowl with the zest.

Set the bowl over the pan of gently simmering water and add the

sugar and butter. Stir, using a whisk until the butter has melted and the sugar dissolved.

Put the eggs and additional yolks into a separate bowl and beat together with a fork. Pour the eggs through a sieve in a steady stream into the lemon mixture and stir using a wooden spoon until well until combined. This ensures that the curd is smooth, with no eggy lumps!

Stir the mixture constantly over the heat until the lemon curd thickens and lightly coats the back of a wooden spoon. This will take 15-20 mins. Remove the pan from the heat. Leave for 5 minutes to cool slightly and check if it is set. Then, pour the curd into small warmed sterilized jars.

Cover, seal and label. Store in a cool, dark place, ideally at the top of a fridge. Use within 3 months and once opened, store in the fridge.

Variations: Try using Seville oranges or limes instead of lemons for a change.

Same basic ingredients but use 2 Seville oranges or 6 limes instead of the lemons. Make sure the total amount of juice is 150mls.

Cook’s Tips: Scrub the citrus fruits with sodium bicarbonate before zesting to remove pesticides.

Put halved citrus on a microwaveproof plate and microwave for 10 seconds per half on high, to maximise juice.

To sterilise jars- put 1” water into each jar, place in a microwave and heat for 2 mins, on high.

It’s really easy to tell when it’s set.

Take the bowl off the hob to cool slightly, insert a teaspoon into the centre and you’ll be able to see if it’s set. If not, place back on the hob and cook for 5 more minute

Plan celebrates 15 years Cheryl Kirby takes over the role of Mayor and Chair of Yate Town Council from predecessor Karl Tomasin

New mayor for Yate YATE has a new mayor after Councillor Cheryl Kirby was elected at the annual town council meeting in May. Cllr Kirby will also be the chair of Yate Town Council, taking on both roles from Karl Tomasin, who had served in the role for three years.

Ben Nutland is the new vice chair and deputy town mayor.

Cllr Kirby thanked her predecessor for his service and colleagues for their support, adding: "As Chair and Mayor of Yate Town Council, I now look forward to the future and to representing the residents of Yate, to support, encourage and promote their achievements within our community.”

Cllr Nutland said: "I am delighted to be elected Deputy Mayor and Vice Chair of Yate Town Council. It’s an honour and a privilege to represent Yate and its residents. I’m looking forward to supporting Mayor Cheryl Kirby over the forthcoming year."

YATE Town Council is marking 15 years of a community plan to improve the town.

The council started the Yate Community Plan initiative in 2007, aiming to drive forward community projects and enhance the economic and social well-being of residents, and it was launched the following year, taken forward by a team of volunteers who meet regularly.

Since then it has contributed towards changes including providing extra youth facilities, increasing allotment sites, improvements to Yate Railway Station, supporting bringing a cinema to the town, setting up Yate and Sodbury Business Association, improving cycling safety, the Cranleigh Court Totem Pole artwork project and the tile mural project, working with local schools at Yate Shopping Centre.

Over the last 15 years, the group of Community Plan Volunteers have met regularly to consider public feedback, revisit the plan and help push ahead changes.

The town council said that, while the original plan had a 20-year vision, a large amount of the original objectives have already been achieved, Community Plan chair Karl Tomasin said: "The Volunteers of Yate Community Plan past and present have shown such resilience and determination to better their local community.

"The proudness felt by the volunteers has rippled out into the community, shaping the town developments taking place around us over the last 15 years.

"At a time where many towns dared to envisage the future, Yate Town Council set in motion the Yate Community Plan to enable local influence from a grass roots level of which we are very proud, and give sincere thanks to the volunteers who have made all of these achievements possible”. At the Full Council meeting in May, the Local Nature Action Plan (LNAP) was rooted into the Town Council’s Climate and Ecological commitment.

The LNAP has been drawn up to help us to work together as a community to tackle the decline in biodiversity. Yate is an urban area, with green spaces within the urban area covering 850 hectares. Within built on and rural spaces, over the six year plan the LNAP aims to address effects on the natural environment from Climate Change and human-driven activity; enhance ecological value of the Town by promoting the diversity of wildlife species and habitats; develop habitat webs where ecosystems, plants and animals can thrive; connect environmentally valuable areas by developing, creating and enhancing connecting corridors; and make nature relevant to residents by encouraging educational initiatives and community participation in the LNAP actions.

Yate Men's Shed needs a new home YATE Men's Shed has seen a resurgence in interest following our successful post-pandemic relaunch, which started with a display in Yate Town Centre, followed by an open day at the Armadillo Centre.

Members have a wide variety of interests, ranging from woodwork and model building to car and bike restoration.

Chairman of YMS trustees Nigel Woodford said: "During the last four years, Yate Men's Shed has been a lifeline for many senior men who found their social contacts had eroded after retirement from work.

"After a very structured working life, very few of us keep in close contact with our workmates and the Men's Shed offers a safe, friendly environment to chat, drink tea and discuss whatever interests us.

"The Shed puts structure in their week and we all look forward to meeting up.

At present, our meetings are centred in the Yate Parish Hall on Station Road, which we rent for each meeting.

Here, thanks to the support from Yate Town Council, we also have the use of a small adjacent

room in the Parish Hall which we have turned into a workshop for woodworking.

This is actively used by YMS members but its size limits its use to a maximum of six persons at a time due to safety considerations.

Also, it does not allow any scope for expansion of our activities to cater for other members’ interests, which are as diverse as electronics and computing, car and motorbike restoration, metalwork and model engineering.

Our ambition is to find a dedicated facility that would enable us to develop the group to cater for such needs.

We would welcome any ideas from residents or businesses in the Yate area where there may be possibility to build or adapt an existing building for the Yate Men's Shed.

STAFF, friends and bakers came together at Goldney House in Chipping Sodbury for a fundraising afternoon of fun, stalls, music, and cake to raise muchneeded funds for the Brandon Trust charity.

A panel of five experts enjoyed judging the 12 incredible cakes that had been entered into the competition.

The winning entry was a spectacular multi-layered lemon cake, baked

The event raised £196 for the Brandon Trust.

Organiser and manager of Goldney House Becky Clark said: "What a great afternoon it was on our roof-top garden for the charity Bake-off in the sunshine.

IF you go down to the woods today you'll be in for a big surprise - it was not quite the woods but Chipping Sodbury Town Hall was the setting for a very enthusiastic talk by Dr Gillian White, called the Hugely Huggable History of the Teddy Bear.

Her talk took us through what is believed by some to be the start of the teddy bear industry by Apollonio Steiff and her six nephews, and the alternative version, that a penniless Russian immigrant, Morris Michtom, first sold the bears created by his wife. The name is said to have come from President Theodore Roosevelt, known as Teddy, after he refused to shoot a bear on a day's hunting.

One other interesting fact was that the Federation of Suffragettes opened the East London Toy factory in 1914 which made teddy bears, providing work for the women of the East End with pay equal to men’s and working hours fitted around childcare.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday June 1 at 7.30pm in the town hall, due to the Thursday being the start of the Jubilee bank holiday.

The speaker will be Victoria Westlake, with a floristry demonstration.

The next outing is on June 16, to Hestercombe Gardens, with others being arranged.

We have five Kurling groups because when one group gets full, we do our best to start a new one. It’s very sociable and is great for maintaining mobility and flexibility.

The fifth group is currently recruiting and meets at Yate Parish Hall twice a month on Tuesdays.

No experience or equipment required. You do need to be a member of Yate and Sodbury District u3a, which costs just £8 annual membership and is for people who are no longer in full-time work, but you can try it out for two sessions to see if it’s for you.

Olympic gold medallist Laura dominates at Badminton LAURA Collett continued her run of success at the highest level of eventing by winning Badminton Horse Trials with her Tokyo Olympics partner London 52.

The 32-year-old Gloucestershire rider, part of the gold medal winning team at last year’s Games, completed the event on a record score at Badminton of just 21.4 penalties, receiving the Badminton trophy from the Princess Royal in front of a packed grandstand.

She had led the international from start to finish, scoring 21 in the opening dressage, going clear within the time over a beefy cross-country course and adding just 0.4 of a time penalty in the closing show jumping phase.

Laura, who overcame serious injuries in an eventing accident nine years ago that put her into an induced coma and took away most of her vision in one eye, said of her 13-year-old equine partner: “That horse is amazing

– just exceptional. I’ve always believed in him and he just rose to the occasion.”

Runner-up was world champion Ros Canter on Lordships Graffalo, on 26 penalties, with Laura’s Olympic team mate Oliver Townend third on Swallow Springs (29.7 penalties) despite a heartstopping moment when the horse took off early at the final part of the cross-country’s quarry complex, climbed over it, sat on his haunches but recovered to carry on.

Piggy March, winner of the last Badminton in 2019 on Vanir Kamira, came fourth with the now 17-year-old mare, with Oliver fifth on his second horse, Ballaghmor Class. Event firsttimer David Doel, aged 29, an ice-cream maker from Lacock, was sixth on Galileo Nieuwmoed.

Having been cancelled twice due to covid, the event had new presenting sponsors in Mars Equestrian and attracted a crowd

of 180,000 spectators to the South Gloucestershire park over four days.

Cross-country day alone sold out of more than 100,000 tickets in advance, with fans watching nearly six hours of action over designer Eric Winter’s 32-fence track.

Nearly 60 of the more than 80 starters got round but the course claimed some big names.

Tom McEwen, part of the Tokyo GB team and the individual silver medallist, fell with Toledo De Kerser, while long-time team rider Pippa Funnell retired one horse across country and was eliminated with her other.

There was also a serious fall for European champion Nicola Wilson with JL Dublin. She was knocked out and taken to Southmead Hospital, where she remained more than a week later with several spinal fractures. Her horse was uninjured.

Good start for Sodbury

CHIPPING Sodbury's senior teams have made a highly encouraging start to the new cricket season, with three players scoring centuries in the opening weeks.

Jiwanjot Singh, the club's overseas player for the summer, reached three figures in a friendly against Biddestone, paving the way for a memorable win.

And his effort was followed up by Matt Webb and Ben Boardman, who also reached three figures.

Webb blasted a magnificent 135 not out off 94 (six fours, ten sixes) for the 4ths, helping set up a 21-run success over Bristol United Banks 2nds.

And Boardman reached three figures for the first time, ending unbeaten on 104 for the 3rds, who went on to overcome their Winterbourne rivals by 135 runs.

This local derby was also notable for the fact that teenager Henry Rendell completed his first half century for the club, before being dismissed for 56.

Sodbury's first XI, who play in Division One of the Gloucestershire County League, opened the new campaign with successive victories, and will be hoping to carry on that momentum in June when they have three home fixtures.

YATE Town have appointed former Bristol Rovers and City striker Peter Beadle as first team manager.

Beadle, who also played for Bournemouth, Watford and Gillingham, and was also on Spurs' books for two years, has managed Taunton Town, Newport County and Clevedon before taking charge at Hereford, where he won three consecutive league titles – a first for a nonleague side.

He said: "I'm delighted to take the role as manager of Yate Town FC. They are local to me and play a part in my playing history, as I've played at the ground with Bristol Rovers.

"I know a lot of the people involved on the football side of things and I'm looking forward to getting started."

Beadle takes over from Paul Michael, who left after guiding the club to seventh place in the Southern League Premier South, and said he hoped to build on the "fantastic work" done last season.

Yate Town Director of Football Richard Thompson said the "calibre of applicants was superb" and he believed Beadle was "the right man to take the club forward".
