Developers draw up scheme for 60 homes on land near golf club and common A HOUSING proposal to build on land next to Chipping Sodbury Common and near the town’s golf course looks set to be opposed.

The scheme has not yet been submitted to planners but locally-based firm Cotswold Homes said it anticipated doing so in the summer.

It said it wanted to develop the site sensitively while providing extensive public open space.

The project is for up to 60 homes, including houses, flats and bungalows, on land off Trinity Lane, on the north side of St John’s Way. Councillor Claire Young, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Thornbury and Yate, said: "Local people have told me they really value this open countryside. They fear if it's built on it won't be able to stop St John's Way flooding.

“This land hasn't been earmarked for development yet in any plan. Cotswold Homes are jumping the gun.”

However, an exhibition held in Chipping Sodbury last November that looked at potential housing development areas mentioned fields either side of Trinity Lane.

In contrast, the Liberal Democrats have pledged an extra £26m of funding for schools across South Gloucestershire to ensure these Conservative cuts do not bite.

Land next to Chipping Sodbury Common being considered for up to 60 new homes PLANS have been drawn up to build as many as 60 homes on land bordering Chipping Sodbury Common and near the town’s golf course.

The controversial scheme is proposed to take development onto the north side of St John’s Way, onto land currently used as paddocks and with one portion of the site accommodating a contractor’s yard.

Cotswold Homes and Clifton Homes said they were working with landowners on the scheme for the site of nearly eight acres east of Trinity Lane, which is used to reach the golf club.

Locally based Cotswold Homes, which said it would build the properties, recently launched

a consultation on its website and has asked for comments to be submitted by June 2.

It said it wanted people to have their say on how they thought the site should be designed and what local facilities should be included.

It said it proposed a mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses, as well as some bungalows and flats, 21 of which would be affordable.

A spokesman for the company said: "We already have a vision for a scheme but it is important we get feedback from the local community.

“Importantly, the site is sustainable, being within easy walking distance of the town

centre and its local facilities and is adjacent to public transport.

“There will also be an abovenormal level of public open space which could be made available for wider community benefit.

“Furthermore, the design and layout being presented takes into account the surrounding landscape, local features and addresses technical issues such as ecology, highways and flooding.

“There will be an investment in community infrastructure and local services, which we expect to be in the region of £350,000-£450,000 and this would be spent on the provision, improvement, operation or maintenance of infrastructure

which includes, but not limited to transport, schools, and medical facilities.”

The consultation website is at www.cotswoldhomes-trinitylane. co.uk but letters have also been sent to neighbouring homes with details of how people without the internet can comment.

Cotswold Homes said all feedback received would will analysed and the final design amended, if appropriate, to include comments to improve the proposals.

It is anticipated that a planning application for the development will be submitted to South Gloucestershire Council during the summer.

Yate centre offers help in finding roles for volunteers VOLUNTEER Centre Yate has invited anyone who is interested in using their spare time to help others to call into its drop-in sessions.

The centre, next to the library in Yate Shopping Centre, serves not only the town but also neighbouring Chipping Sodbury and the surrounding locality It matches volunteers up with suitable roles and helps local groups recruit people to do voluntary work.

Co-ordinator Carole Zorzo said: “If people are not too sure what kind of role they’d like, our

volunteer advisors can help them look at the different options available.

“If they want us to refer them to a specific group or voluntary organisation, we can do that too and we’ll keep in touch to make sure their first steps into volunteering are good ones.”

Death announced of Call to celebrate summer long-serving parish with St Peter’s Hospice councillor

TRIBUTES have been paid to long-standing community activist and parish councillor Cliff Phelps, who has died unexpectedly.

Mr Phelps had served on Dodington Parish Council since 1999 and was thought to have been one of the oldest active councillors in the country, having reached his mid-90s.

The council said he died peacefully after enjoying a fun afternoon with his granddaughter.

In a statement, the council said: “His neighbour and friend was with him at the end and he just faded away without any warning.”

Councillor Phelps was born in Bristol and he worked at the Bristol Aeroplane Company before joining the RAF, serving as a pilot in combat in Syria and Lebanon in the early 1940s.

After being demobbed, he joined what was then the Gloucestershire Constabulary, first working in the Forest of Dean before moving to the Chipping Sodbury district in 1957 and serving in the town for 18 years.

He was involved in many local activities, from establishing Chipping Sodbury’s first youth club to re-forming Chipping Sodbury Football Club in 1963.

He set up Sodbury Vale Musical Comedy Club and was

patron not only of that group but also the Sodbury Players and the Court Players.

After retiring from the police, Mr Phelps was appointed animal health inspector in what is now South Gloucestershire.

He was also a governor at Abbotswood Primary School and a governor and crossing patrol supervisor at a school in Frampton Cotterell.

Mr Phelps was a brass band fan - he was the council’s representative within Dodington Parish Band - and a member of the Joint Cycleway Group, where he brought disability concerns to the design of cycle tracks as a wheelchair user.

Despite losing both legs, he never let his disability get in the way of his community involvement.

He became a councillor after the death of his wife, Kathleen, and last year said: “I have always enjoyed helping people and being with people. When I was asked to join the parish council, I jumped at it.”

Long-term colleague and friend, Councillor Paul Hulbert, said: "We shall miss him, his deep local knowledge and his great sense of humour.

“If he disagreed with something, he wouldn't be afraid to say so, but he would always be prepared to listen to the other side of an issue.”

ST Peter’s Hospice is asking people in the Yate and Sodbury area to host their own fundraising event this summer.

People are being asked to hold parties across June, July and August to raise funds for St Peter’s Hospice. Organisers say it doesn’t matter whether it is a garden party, BBQ, tea party, picnic or something else.

St Peter’s Hospice Community Fundraiser Esther Hall said: “Hosting a summer party is a great way to bring friends and family together to relax, have fun and enjoy some food and drink.

Sight charity receives windfall from Yate organisation Yate and District Townswomen's Guild has presented a cheque to a charity dedicated to help people threatened with blindness.

RP Fighting Blindness received a cheque for £3,000 from the Guild after they nominated it as their charity last year.

They charity is focussed on finding a treatment for retinitis pigmentosa and other other hereditary conditions of the retina which lead to deterioration of sight and ultimately to blindness. RP affect some 25,000 people in the UK. The charity also offers information and support services to those affected.

RAYSFIELD Infants’ School in Chipping Sodbury has been given a rating of good by inspectors from Ofsted, which last examined the school sevenand-a-half years ago.

Although going down from an assessment of outstanding given in 2009, the inspection report said steps had been taken to improve.

Ofsted also said one key area - the personal development, behaviour and welfare of pupils - was outstanding, with all other areas ranked good.

The school became a federation with Raysfield Junior School in 2015 and they share an executive head teacher, Alison Wood.

Tonwen Empson, who led the inspection team, said: “This is a good school. The executive head teacher has developed a strong staff team that constantly look to ‘learn, enjoy, achieve and discover together’.

“She is highly ambitious for pupils. Following some lower results in 2016, strategies are in place to ensure that outcomes rapidly improve.

“The school is highly inclusive. Pupils, no matter what barriers they may face, have the support and resources they need to thrive.

“Governors are forward thinking and committed to secure successful futures for pupils. They have worked

tirelessly to establish a federation with the neighbouring junior school.”

The report said parents were happy with what the school provided and pupils enjoyed their learning across a range of subjects due to a wide, interesting curriculum.

The quality of teaching was consistently good but it said pupils’ mistakes in lessons were sometimes not noticed and not corrected, so children continued to make those errors in their work.

Ofsted also said the school had a strong sense of community, pupils were confident and respectful and their attendance was higher than the national average.

The report said: “Following some lower outcomes in year two in 2016, senior and subject leaders analysed the weaknesses and quickly put in place some improvements to teaching and learning in order that pupils are better able to meet the raised expectations of the new national curriculum.

“The improvements to mathematics, in particular, can be seen in lessons and in pupils’ books.”

The school said in a newsletter: “Ofsted is confident in the leadership of the school and its ability to target the right areas with success.”

Residents urged to join the trail of discovery in Dodington PARISH leaders in Dodington have published a new leaflet to encourage people to find out about events in their community.

The Discover Dodington 2017 programme draws together a wide range of activities that are run by local organisations.

Copies will be delivered to every address in the parish, with others available from Chipping Sodbury Tourist Information Centre or from Dodington Parish Council itself.

Details of the events are also on the Discover Dodington page of the council’s website.

Councillor Paul Hulbert, who put the programme together, said: “People often say there's not much happening here.

“But there are 35 special events between June and November this year, plus another seven events that run regularly every month. They include

Supermarket helps with Yate youth garden Sat 5th & Sun 6th August - Gates open 10:30am

THE Armadillo Youth Venue and Café is to start work on a garden in its grounds, after securing £5,000 from the local Tesco supermarket.

The money was secured after coming out on top in a community vote at the store at Yate Shopping Centre.

Plans for the garden involve artificial grass, football goals and colourful planting boxes with fruit trees and vegetables. Local suppliers have approached the venue and offered their services, with work on the garden to begin

soon.

Carene Whiting-Hays, the Armadillo’s Operations Manager said; :This will be a community garden to be enjoyed by all. The venue attracts many different age groups from the community and it our aim to make a vibrant and colourful space that will enrich the community.”

A CHARITY golf day organised by the captain of Chipping Sodbury Golf Club is looking to raise £5000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Willow Foundation.

The Willow Foundation has fulfilled thousands of special days for young adults with life threatening conditions. The charity was founded by former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson and his wife Megs in 1999 as a memorial to their daughter Anna who died of cancer at 31.

Club captain Clive Reynolds said; ‘I am well on the way to achieving my £5000 target.

However a well supported event will ensure that I reach my goal and this will enable me to support two worthwhile causes.’

The day at Chipping Sodbury tees off at 11.30am on Friday 14 July as a Stableford Points competition. The entry fee of £140 for a team of four includes refreshments, a two course meal and the chance to win prizes for nearest the pin and halfway house competitions.

A REVIEW of the organisation that runs Yate and Winterbourne international academies has resulted in a report describing its financial position as “vulnerable”.

The document published by South Gloucestershire’ s internal audit service said significant changes were now required to allow the separation of the two schools’ finances.

The Ridings’ Federation of Academies currently still has responsibility for the Yate and Winterbourne sites but the Yate academy - including the secondary school, primary phase and nursery - is set to transfer to the Greenshaw Learning Trust in September.

A request for the review the federation’s governance of and financial management was made by Ridings’ trustees after a financial notice to improve was issued by the Education Funding Agency in light of a potential £1 million deficit by the end of the current academic year.

n NEWS A PAINTING of Ann Widdecombe created to promote Thornbury Arts Festival and the Severn Vale Arts Trail received a seal of approval from the former Shadow Home Secretary herself.

Miss Widdecombe dropped by to see the portrait in Olveston before going on to officially launch the festival.

The painting was the work of village artist and art trail participant Angus Macaskill, who creates pictures when inspired by the latest news and then displays them on the gates of his Churchill House home for passers-by to see.

His image of Miss Widdecombe was based on an appearance on the BBC’s Question Time programme and also featured its presenter David Dimbleby.

When told about the painting, Miss Widdecombe was keen to see it so stopped off to meet Mr Macaskill ahead of her appointment in Thornbury.

She said the picture was “very amusing” and happily posed alongside it. She also said

The festival’s special guest, who became one of the most

popular contestants on Strictly Come Dancing, then went on to the Armstrong Hall to give a talk about her life within and outside politics, before answering questions from the audience.

Other highlights of the nine-day festival included comedy drama from the Reduced Shakespeare Company, concerts by folk singer Cara Dillon and the electric string band Stringfever, as well as a talk on genetics by leading scientist Professor Robert Winston.

Lord Winston also visited the Castle School earlier on the day of his visit to talk to students.

The festival committee said comments received from those attending events had indicated it was one of the best ever and a big success.

Decision time for Yate and Sodbury voters

June 8 is decision time as the people of Yate and Sodbury go to the polls for the general election. We’ve given the four candidates running in the Thornbury and Yate constituency the chance to present their case to the voters. Here’s what they had to say.

Luke Hall, Conservative candiate As a local man, who lives in Yate and who grew up in South Gloucestershire, it has been the biggest honour of my life to represent our community in Parliament. I have strived to be an active and passionate local representative for our area, influencing the government on the issues that affect us locally.

Having lived here all of my life, I have been able to make progress on the issues that matter to us, like securing £500,000 to finally kick start junction 18A onto the M4 after a 30 year delay, a project that will help relieve the congestion that has affected our communities for too long. I have also been working to secure investment into local broadband – we have seen £1.7 billion being invested in extending superfast broadband provision, with 7,398 premises being connected locally and more planned later this year.

I have also been fighting to protect our local green spaces in places like Thornbury, Charfield and Coalpit Heath, and have twice ensured the Government rejected the idea of supporting a new 3,000 house ‘Garden Village’ at Buckover, sending a powerful message to the Council and Developers that these poorly made plans are not right for our area.

I am pushing to see better local bus services like the 82 to Southmead Hospital and have now secured a full review of bus serves in our area, which will look at bringing the 82 back to Chipping Sodbury High Street. Locally, I have worked with the Council to secure money for local health services, like the redevelopment of Thornbury Hospital, which will see up to 80 new NHS rehabilitation and mixed use care beds and money invested into Thornbury Health Centre.

On all of these issues, having a Conservative MP locally means we have influence here and in government, getting the best deal for South Gloucestershire, rather than a lone voice shouting from the side-lines. If I am re-elected as the local MP, I will be using the influence I have in Government to see these issues through. Bring back control of our public services from profit driven investors, give our children a future that will not be filled with debt from student loans or pay day loans, as they struggle to find work with over 7 million jobs predicted to be lost to mechanicalisation. We see it every day now in McDonalds, Tesco, your local petrol station, jobs that were part time or needed when you were a student or retired are now disappearing; this is real and happening now, not in 10 years.

We need a Government with the vision to see that we need our education system to be changed so that you no longer teach to the test but learn life skills and plan for the job we will need in the years to come.

Invest in the NHS, not sell off millions of pound worth of contracts to private companies. Bring our trains and buses back under local and national authority control.

How can the Government say only they can be trusted with the economy, when they have held wages back and in real terms the UK workers are 10% worse off after 7 years and the National debt has risen from £880b to £1.7t in 7 years?

Teresa May said 6 times there would not be a snap election, Jacob Reece-Mogg said ‘the Tories would appear deeply opportunistic if there was’, who do you believe?

Brian Mead, Labour candidate It is a honour to have been selected as the Labour candidate for the Thornbury and Yate constituency and I look forward to meeting as many residents as possible in the election campaign. My background is that I have lived in North Bristol and South Gloucestershire my whole life and served as a Filton Town Councillor for the past 6 years. I currently work in the security industry, having previously worked for several years on the railways where I held local, regional and national positions in the RMT union. I am an active member of UNITE the Union, the Cooperative Party where I am local Chair and I am Secretary of Bristol Speedway Supporters Club.

I am standing in this election to give people the opportunity to vote for Labour's policies of investment in public services and against the austerity agenda. This government's austerity policies have left tens of thousands of low and middle income people in the Thornbury and Yate constituency worse off in real terms than they were before 2010. The Labour alternative I will be fighting for will see increased investment in the NHS, education, and social care. Creeping privatisation of the NHS will be reversed, divisive and discredited plans for grammar schools will be scrapped, and a game changing programme to build social housing will be rolled out. Zero Hours contracts will be banned and the minimum wage will be increased to £10 per hour. If you agree I ask you to vote Labour on June 8th, vote for a better fairer Britain with government for the many and not the few.

Liberal Democrat candidate We all know Mrs May will be Prime Minister after the election but she will not be on the ballot paper here. The real question is which of the local candidates will best stand up for our area?

My record as a councillor over the last ten years shows that I am a strong voice standing up for our community. I have campaigned with local people - and won - on issues from broadband to protecting green spaces, transport to health.

I have lived in the constituency for 17 years and am bringing up my family here. I spent a decade working in the software industry, including for local small businesses. So I understand the pressures on our communities.

As a parent with children at local schools, I share concerns over this Government’s funding cuts. Most local primary schools face losing the equivalent of two teachers each - and secondary schools up to 16 teachers. The Government has left the local NHS chronically underfunded, with delays doubling at Southmead A & E. Its damaging approach to the Brexit negotiations is putting local jobs at risk.

As your MP, I will campaign for investment in jobs and training, more funding for our schools and an extra £26m for the NHS and social care. I want to make sure we have truly affordable housing, with transport infrastructure and services to support it, without destroying our much-valued countryside. I will fight to protect the “triple lock” introduced by Steve Webb that makes sure pensions keep pace with wages and inflation. I will campaign to protect the environment and want to give the people, not politicians, the final say on the Brexit deal.

The Conservative MP here voted the way the Government told him to every time. Having worked closely with Steve Webb for many years, I know what a difference a strong local MP can make. As your next MP I will be a strong, effective voice speaking out for our area in Parliament, a voice for the things we care most about through these worrying times – our families, our jobs, our schools and our NHS.

The wheels start turning as youth bus Urbie comes into service A NEW bus is on the road in Yate to help youth workers keep in contact with local youngsters.

The vehicle is known as the Urbie - the Urban Vehicle for Information and Education and having taken delivery of the vehicle, Yate Town Council is now planning an official launch.

The Urbie will be used by the detached youth team, whose work is funded by the council, to get around the town and engage with young people.

Buying the bus was made possible by the support of a number of local organisations and businesses, including Merlin Housing Society, the Avon and Somerset Police Community Trust, engineering firm Renishaw, One Stop Carriers for Causes, Sodbury and Yate Business Association and Yate and District Rotary Club.

Planning inspector rejects developer’s appeal for second time DEVELOPERS have lost a second appeal in their effort to get permission to build houses on a landlocked piece of land in Yate.

Woodstock Homes want to demolish a bungalow in Cambrian Drive in order to gain access to the site and put 18 homes on the plot.

But South Gloucestershire Council is opposed to the scheme and has twice rejected it .

After the first refusal, Woodstock appealed to a planning inspector to overturn the decision.

But the inspector supported the council, leading to the company re-submitting the

application, saying it had addressed concerns raised.

South Gloucestershire opposed it a second time, repeating its view that it would result in “significant and demonstrable harm” and failed to reach the highest possible standards of site planning and design.

Woodstock went back to the planning inspectorate for a further ruling but once again, the council’s decision has been backed.

The inspector, Richard Aston, said: “The proposed access road into the appeal site would cross an adopted right of way that is used by pedestrians and cyclists.

“I was able to see from my visit that the route connects community development, including a shop, the Farmhouse public house and Cambrian Green Court to the east, with surrounding residential areas.

“It is evidently an important travel route for residents, including children, the elderly and the disabled and it is clearly an integral part of the estate’s original design.”

Mr Aston said day-to-day movements and deliveries would be sufficient to increase the potential for conflict between vehicles on the proposed access drive and pedestrians and cyclists using the adopted right

of way where the two routes cross.

He concluded that “the proposal would fail to provide an acceptable design of access”.

Yate Town Council had strongly opposed the plan - together with a number of residents -saying the land was a well-used piece of open space and it was essential to keep it open.

Yate councillor Chris Willmore said: “I am really delighted by this decision because it is so clear.”

The town council will now approach the landowner to see if the site can be bought to protect it as public open space.

MUSIC lovers are being asked to get in the mood and dress in nautical clothes as Iron Acton prepares for Music in the Meadows.

The Prom is being held on Saturday 14 July, part of a weekend of music organised by Acton Aid which is raising funds for local good causes.

Organisers are promising prizes for the best outfits on the night, where people traditionally bring a picnic as they listen to music from the Bristol Millennium Orchestra with classically trained soprano and

Paul Jones and Dave Kelly return to Sodbury Manfred Mann frontman Paul Jones is making a welcome return to Chipping Sodbury this July. He will be joined by co vocalist Dave Kelly and the duo, founder members of The Blues Band, will be performing their live acoustic set at the Baptist Church on the evening of Friday 7th July.

Since announcing the concert organisers Cotswold Edge Events have been overwhelmed by the response and the July date is well on its way to selling out. Annual beer and music festival set for sell-out

REAL ale enthusiasts will be heading for Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club when the annual South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival returns to the venue.

The event, now in its 22nd year, attracts hundreds of people to The Ridings to sample a 100-strong range of beers, as well as cider, perry and wine.

They also enjoy hours of live music during the two-day event, with food, snacks and soft drinks available.

Organised by Yate and District Rotary Club, this year’s festival will open at 6pm on Friday, July 7, and continue into the night, resuming from noon on Saturday, July 8.

It is one of the biggest beer festivals in the area and profits from the weekend will go to a range of local, national and international charities supported by the Rotarians.

Club spokesman David Picton said £236,000 had so far been

Saturday’s schedule features The Peppercorns, The Three Pieces, Fourth Wall, Lorise Eaton and The Steelers and a closing show by the West's longest running glam rock tribute outfit Fab 208.

Mr Picton said the club, which has use of The Ridings thanks to Chipping Sodbury Town Trust, donated nearly £8,000 to local community projects and individuals in the year ending June 2016.

A further £2,220 was sent to national charities and nearly £7,000 was allocated for international support, including the campaign to eradicate polio.

appear in concert.

The Noche Latina event on Saturday, June 17, features Cuban singer Indira Roman and her husband, Columbian songwriter Julian Segura, on guitar and vocals.

A Latin-themed supper will be included in the ticket price of £16.50.

Music from the 60s enjoyed at event for the elderly MORE than 100 older people enjoyed an evening of musical entertainment organised by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club.

The event, held in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, featured The End of the Track band from Chippenham, which turned the clock back to the 60s with its schedule of songs.

Rotary president Ian Lowe, who was master of ceremonies for the night, said: “The evening

proved to be a great success.”

He thanked all the organisations that had contributed to the success of the event, including the band, Green Community Travel for transporting members of the audience to and from their care homes, the staff at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall and members of Chipping Sodbury Inner Wheel for providing refreshments.

Police cadets abseil for Yate Rocks Festival set South Glos charities to draw in the crowds

A GROUP of Volunteer Police Cadets have raised money for local charities after abseiling down Bridewell police station in Bristol.

Nine teenagers and three cadet leaders from the South Gloucestershire unit took up the challenge and raised more than £600 for local charities, including Shopmobility, South Gloucestershire Chinese Association and the South Gloucestershire Parents and Carers group.

Cadet leader Sergeant Steve Ives said: “This was a really good event thanks to excellent support from the Avon and Somerset Police rope access team. Some of the cadets were very nervous and yet overcame their fears, all in the name of charity. We're all very proud of them.

ORGANISERS of the annual Yate Rocks Festival are expecting a big turn-out for the popular community event when it returns to Kingsgate Park.

The festival is in its twelfth year and is set to draw in thousands of people of all ages.

They will go along to hear local bands, visit sideshows, support community and craft stalls and enjoy a variety of food and drink, with a beer tent hosted by the Wickwar Brewing Company.

A range of entertainment includes giant inflatables for children, who can also have a go on trampolines and join in football games.

A new feature this year will be a go-kart ride for youngsters and a Wipe Out inflatable that also allows adults to join in.

There will also be a chance to

see a fire engine from the town’s station.

The festival opens on Saturday, June 24, with music to be performed by bands including Atlantic, Limited Edition, Toby, Tail Lights, Uncle Buck, Elevation and Fire Blisters, as well as the Yate Rock Choir.

There will also be dancing

by GKR, Kathryn Hurley Dance Academy, Redds, Street Cred and Pure.

A Praise in the Park event will get the festival’s second day under way on Sunday, June 25, with local churches providing an outdoor service from 10.30am.

The Westerly Showband will play during an afternoon Picnic in the Park from 1.30pm. There will also be entertainment from Raysfield School Choir and the Sounds Delighted women’s choir.

n NEWS A WOMAN whose life was transformed by a national charity when she was a baby is now supporting it herself by managing a fundraising store in Chipping Sodbury.

Jo Ridler leads the team at the popular Barnardo’s shop in Hatherell’s Yard off the High Street.

She knew from a young age that she had been adopted but it was only last year, after her father died, that she discovered it was Barnardo’s which had helped to find her a new family.

It was some time before she felt ready to return to work after her loss, but when she searched for local opportunities in the retail sector the first vacancy to appear was for Barnardo’s.

Now she is helping to raise funds for the same charity which turned her life around several decades earlier.

Jo will share her story with Barnardo’s trustees when they visit her store this Thursday morning.

Jo, aged 50, said: “I was adopted at the age of just six weeks old and my adoptive parents told me the truth when I was 12 years old.

“They provided a loving home and a wonderful upbringing, and I’ll be forever grateful that they accepted me into their family. It was a life-changing opportunity.

“However, it was only when I was going through my father’s things after he died last year that I discovered it was Barnardo’s which had helped to place me in a new home.“I needed to take a break from employment after losing my parents but when I felt ready to return to work I searched online for local vacancies – and Barnardo’s was the first employer to appear!

“I was amazed. I was able

to give something back to the charity which had given me a second chance in life.

“They took care of me - and now I’m able to help take care of them.”

Jo and her store associate Denise Sprackman lead a team of 19 volunteers aged from 14 to 65 years old.

Last year the volunteers provided more than 1,400 hours of support and received more than 1,300 bags of donations.

Barnardo’s trustees are visiting the store as part of a tour of South West children’s services

this week.

They are due to meet many of the volunteers and try their hand at sorting stock, steaming clothes and serving customers.

Barnardo’s director of income and innovation Louise Parkes said: “Jo’s own experience is a really powerful example of how Barnardo’s can give people a better start in life, so we were keen to meet her and learn more about her passion for the charity.

“We hope that that her story will encourage support for the shop’s fundraising efforts so that we can continue to help

vulnerable and disadvantaged children across the UK.” The Barnardo’s store is open Monday to Saturday from 9am-5.30pm and Sunday from 10am-4pm.

The team always welcome donations of good-quality clothes, books, toys, games, accessories and bric-a-brac, as well as offers of help from potential volunteers.

THIS month I’d like to tell you about some arrests we made thanks to prompt information from local people.

One was for a burglary at a community centre in Shire Way, Yate, in the early hours of Friday 12 May. We were alerted to the crime by a CCTV operator reporting suspicious behaviour. That call lead to the arrest of a man who has since been jailed for a total of 12 months for this burglary and a break-in at a pub in Soundwell in April.

Another member of the public called us early on Monday 15 May to report seeing an attack on an ATM in Wellington Road, Yate. The offenders unsuccessfully tried to break into the ATM. A short time later three men were arrested in Bristol over the incident.

Drugs stolen from treatment centre A MAN has been convicted of stealing prescription drugs from an NHS Treatment Centre in Emersons Green.

David Bamford, 47, of Quakers Road, Downend, was found guilty following a trial of the theft of Fentanyl and Diamorphine from the centre, where he worked as a lead operating department practitioner – a role which involved assisting the anaesthetist during operations.

He was also convicted of causing a public nuisance, which relates to the contents of ampoules being tampered with and changed.

He appeared before Bristol Crown Court last month where he was sentenced to two years in prison.

In June 2015, staff at the centre, which is run by Care UK, discovered that a quantity of ampoules had been tampered with.

The ampoules had been broken off at one end, emptied and then filled back up with other substances, including a less potent painkilling drug and what is believed to have been water.

Further enquiries revealed that in the months leading up to this discovery, there was a spike in instances of these drugs being damaged and consequently destroyed.

DC John Shanahan said: “David Bamford was stealing prescription drugs from his workplace for his own use. Tests showed he had both of these drugs in his system and he admitted in court he was taking small doses as a painkiller for a bad back.

“Our investigation discovered he was frequently accessing areas where these controlled drugs were kept outside of normal working hours; he was involved in an unfeasibly large proportion of the breakages which were

recorded and he appeared to involve himself unnecessarily in clearing up after operations.

“An audit of controlled drugs held at the centre also found that on 20 May 2015, Bamford ordered 20 ampoules of Diamorphine from the pharmacy at the premises and three days later he collected the order from there. Only 10 of the Diamorphine ampoules were put into the centre’s stock.

“On one occasion a member of staff asked Bamford for advice after finding broken Diamorphine ampoules among the stock and he advised them not to bother reporting the incident.

“Bamford’s actions had the potential to put the public at risk but thankfully it’s not believed anyone was harmed as a result of medication being tampered with.

“We’ve worked closely with Care UK throughout this lengthy and complex inquiry and I’d

n NEWS HUNDREDS of South Gloucestershire parents, including many from the Yate area, have been taking action in protest against cuts to education funding.

The Fair Funding For All Schools campaign began in the spring as it became clear that a proposed new national funding formula, designed to reduce inequality in the way education budgets were allocated, was not going to benefit 98 per cent of schools, including those most in need.

As reported in last month’s Voice, more than 300 people attended the first South Glos meeting in Hambrook on April 6, the day after campaigners had urged councillors to back their concerns.

Theresa May’s decision to call a snap general election brought the matter into sharper focus, with supporters being encouraged to question candidates about their views on school funding and a number of hustings meetings being organised.

Parents rise up to battle school funding cuts receives some of the lowest per-pupil funding in the country so head teachers, school staff, parents and students are angry that they will face more realterms cuts in the coming years.

Some schools are warning parents that the pressure on their budgets - including increased pension and National Insurance contributions and rising bills will mean some tough decisions.

Staple Hill Primary governors have written to families saying the school faces a £100,000 cut in the 2018-19 financial year - equivalent to a monthly contribution of £33 per child.

“The school needs to take drastic action,” they say.

“We will be looking at options such as: * reducing staffing levels * changes to school hours * increasing class sizes * reducing provision such as

breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and school trips."

Eric Mutch, a parent governor at the school, told Downend Voice: "These cuts will affect every parent, regardless of their political persuasion."

About 100 parents and teachers attended an Education Question Time at Abbeywood School chaired by Dr Lisa Harrison of UWE Bristol.

The four candidates contesting the Filton & Bradley Stoke seat agreed that schools had received more money but increases in student numbers and other costs meant head teachers faced a real-terms funding gap.

Jack Lopresti, who was MP for the area from 2010-17, was consistently booed when he argued that the Conservatives had put put more funding into schools, with audience members

saying it did not reflect the actual needs. Concerns were expressed about the threat to the jobs of teachers and teaching assistants and the impact on children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

South Glos and Bristol parents, teachers and many children joined a Fair Funding for Schools march in Bristol on May 20, with an estimated turnout of 5,000.

Councillors of all parties on South Gloucestershire Council, at its annual meeting on May 17, welcomed the actions of the Fair Funding for all Schools campaigners.

They unanimously passed a motion praising and endorsing the group's aims and vowing to write to the Government immediately after the election on June 8 calling for increased funding for all schools.

n NEWS HERB expert Jekka McVicar has designed the first specially commissioned permanent garden at the Three Counties Showground.

Jekka, whose herb farm is in Alveston, created the Health and Well-being Garden for the site in Malvern, where it was opened during the recent Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Malvern Spring Festival.

It will now remain for use

by Pathways, a charity for adults with learning difficulties, which uses gardening and the environment to introduce young people to the working world. Schools and educational establishments will also benefit from the garden.

Jekka is the RHS ambassador for health through horticulture and the garden was the focus for a Live Well Zone at the festival.

Known as the Queen of Herbs, Jekka was inspired by a holistic system of healthcare known as Ayurvedic medicine when designing the elliptical garden, the features of which

include a cherry tree walk edged with lavender and a tranquil seating area.

Last year, Jekka designed her first feature garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, having exhibited there for many years and winning a string of gold

medals for her displays of herbs.

That garden, called A Modern Apothecary and including herbs grown at her nursery, was inspired by conversations with doctors and other care professionals about the benefits of plants and gardens to people’s

health.

It has now been recreated at St John’s Hospice in St John’s Wood, London.

Meanwhile, award winning Jekka, whose many fans include royalty and celebrity chefs, is also working on developing a roof garden for Southmead Hospital.

She is also in the middle of a series of open days at her nursery in Shellards Lane, with the next on June 2 and 3, July 7 and 8 and September 1 and 2.

The farm will also host an RHS open day on Saturday, August 5, and will be involved in the National Gardens Scheme open days on Sunday, August 6.

Rockhampton ready to roll as folk festival unveils quality line-up SCARECROWS have been appearing in and around Thornbury to spread the word about Rockhampton Folk Festival.

This year’s event takes place in its countryside venue on Saturday, June 17, with a line-up that includes BBC Young Folk Musician award winner Greg Russell. Greg will be appearing alongside Ray Hearne, who describes himself as a Yorkshire Irish kid.

Vocal Global, gipsy swing from The Schmoozenbergs, Fife and Strum and The Hosen Ones have also been booked to appear.

This year’s festival has been recognised by Arts Council

England and with its support, the organisers have been able to bring top quality artists to the village. They are also supporting young musicians, with the Wriggle Jigglers and Panache steel band set to entertain festival-goers.

Tickets can be bought through the festival website, with Early Bird discounts only available until May 31. They are also on sale in Surroundings in Thornbury. Gates will open at 2.30pm, with locally produced food and drink available and parking provided next to the festival site.

However, anyone who cycles to the event will receive a free slice of cake as a thank-you for leaving their car at home.

View from Yate Heritage Centre . . .

Roman Yate OUR local Roman heritage is perhaps not celebrated as much as it might be, despite the Yate area arguably boasting some of the best Roman history in South Gloucestershire.

The Bristol region proved a rich and densely populated area of Roman Britain and this is reflected in excavations around Yate.

There are significant sites such as a villa at Hawkesbury, a farmstead at Horton and a mosaic discovered at Badminton. The hill forts on the Cotswold escarpment, including Sodbury and Horton, although Iron Age in origin, clearly had Roman occupation.

The star turn, however, is the discovery of the small Roman town at Hall End, at the northern tip of the former Yate parish.

Estimated to have had around 500 inhabitants, Hall End was the biggest Roman settlement found

in the South Gloucestershire area complete with an urban grid system, as well as more rural farm buildings.

Such finds have resulted in finds in recent years ranging from bronze clothing ornaments and high quality Samian pottery to

parts of buildings and domestic games, all excavated in recent years.

Recent geo-physical recording by the Yate and District Archaeology Group has also revealed further houses and more of the Roman road that was next to

the town.

In response to this heritage, we have decided to host a Roman history day. The event will take place on Saturday, July 1.

It will feature several skilled demonstrators focusing on Roman military life, medicine, domestic life, food and textiles, appealing to all ages.

There will also be displays of Roman finds from the area and background information.

Huge Success For Brimsham Green Students at the West A GROUP of Brimsham Green School sixth form students have worked with business mentors from Marshfield Bakery to set up their own company as part of the Young Enterprise Programme.

Their company, Aquila Enterprises, produced cookies and hand-made framed Pixel Art based on favourite game and cartoon characters.

The Young Enterprise Programme is a charity which works with schools throughout the UK to help them develop personal and business skills to enable young people to reach their full potential.

Brimsham Green are the only school in South Gloucestershire to participate in the programme this year. The students have to set up and run a real company they select a board of directors, carry out market research, develop a product or service, manage their finances, promote their company, market and sell to the public. As well as meeting during enrichment sessions in school students also met outside

of school hours for presentation skills and report writing training provided by YE and to produce their products. A lot of effort has gone into the research of pricing structures and suppliers for their artwork.

During November they attended Marshfield Bakery to trial their cookie recipes and carried out market research.

They then sold the cookies at the first trade fair in December

at St Nicholas Market, Bristol to help raise funds for their main product.

As part of their fundraising they ran the ‘tuck shop’ in sixth form for several months, sold their cookies at parents’ evenings and during school productions and organised a Mufti Day at school.

For their main trade fair at the Mall, Cribbs Causeway in February they sold their hand-

made Pixel Art with their cookies alongside to tempt customers to their stand. Whilst at the trade fairs they were judged by four independent judges on their customer service, layout of the stand, their journey and their products unique selling point (USP).

On the 23rd March they attended the Area Heats at the Bristol Cathedral, this time they also entered the ‘Dragon’s Den’ and were interrogated for several minutes about their product, the journey, their marketing and company finances.

The students have had a write-up in the Gazette on-line and spoken about their journey on Bradley Stoke Radio. They are also selling their pixel art on Ebay and social media.

On 3rd May the students attended the West of England Area Finals at Kingsweston House, Bristol. They had to prepare a 10-page Company Report beforehand. On the evening they were interviewed and judged on their stand and

I’m a Celebrity star to visit South Glos Show

A COMEDIAN who came close to winning the ITV show I’m a celebrity Get Me Out Of Here last year is to be special guest at the South Gloucestershire Show.

Joel Dommett will be at the Henfield showground over the the weekend of 5 and 6 August.

The performer is currently on a UK tour, but is taking time out of his schedule to come to the show.

Joel isn’t the only attraction at the show, which last year saw 27,000 visitors come through the gates.

There will be stunts from a top motorbike trials rider, the Rockwood dog display team as well as a special country arena.

Organisers are also raising money for the charity Meningitis Now with a ‘Ham National’ pig race.

Be on the alert for distraction burglars POLICE are urging residents to be aware of a new tactic being used by distraction burglars following incidents in areas across the city, including Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

Three households were visited over the weekend of May 6-7 by two men who talked their way in by saying they needed to check for damp.

In all three incidents, one man kept the resident talking while the other went into another room – and in each case property was later found to be missing.

The first incident happened in Horfield, between 5.30pm and 6pm on Saturday May 6.

Two men called on a 79-year-old woman and tried to persuade her she needed work done on damp.

She refused and they left but she realised her keys were missing.

The first man is described as white, in his 20s, about 5ft 8ins, medium build, with short black hair and was wearing black trousers and top. The second is white, in his 20s, about 5ft 4ins, stocky, with dark hair and was wearing a cap and dark clothing.

At about 3pm on Sunday May 7, two men called at the home of a 94-year-old man in Stockwood.

He later found cash missing from his wallet, while between 3pm and 4pm that day a 79-year-old woman in Staple Hill had cash stolen from her purse after a visit from two men.

a white man, in his 20s, about 6ft tall, of medium build with tidy black straight hair and was wearing a blue boiler suit. The second man is also white, in his 20s, about 5ft 9ins, of medium build with wavy black hair.

These incidents happened over the same weekend as police arrested a man on suspicion of committing a burglary in

Mangotsfield in April. In that incident a man called on a couple in their 80s, getting into the house by claiming to be from a gas company, and stealing a handbag. A 45-year-old man was arrested on May 7 and was later released under investigation pending further enquiries.

DC 3222 Alastair Binnie said: “We're determined to track down criminals who take advantage of vulnerable elderly people and take them to court. I’m keen to hear from anyone with any information which could help our investigation, especially residents who had similar callers.

"This sort of thing isn’t common but is very upsetting, and can be prevented: just remember, if you’re not sure, don’t open the door."

Officers have carried out house-to-house enquiries in the areas affected.

Police recommend using a door chain and asking to see the identification of unexpected callers. Officers say if you are suspicious of a caller or feel unsafe, ring 999 straight away.

I AM sure you will agree each month seems to have just got going and we find ourselves in its last week. This is a very important month for lots of young people with exams either at school, college or at university.

Revision and preparation is a tough one especially if you are surrounded by lovely days and the beach is calling. One of my toughest ever was my English Literature exam. This included John Keats’ poetry, Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and to cap it all Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan.

Believe me it was a challenge of huge proportions.

Our English teacher, Mr. John Brock, proved to be a gem but not appreciated by us at the time.

No doubt as you look back at your teachers there is much you remember about them.

However many years pass I never cease to wonder at their daily patience with us. Mr. Brock

suggested that we learn off by heart every poem, speech or revelation that we could for when the examinations came upon us.

I used to cycle from North Road, Yate off to Yate Rocks, sit near the ford and take in all that I could. Lots of it can still be recited if I am pushed.

Mr Brock was a wise man because I am sure you will agree it is such a help to daily living if we have a plethora of good, sound knowledge and 'immortal' words to rest on.

Maybe added to this you have, like me, found some phrases of regular even life-long blessing.

Here are a few words I first heard whilst on a Norfolk Broads sailing week with other young people in 1952. 'I am come that you might have life and have it more abundantly', Jesus said it long ago but its relevance today remains secure for each person who embraces it.

Return to Cabinet system for council SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has reverted to a system of being run by a leader and Cabinet members - five years after the arrangement was abandoned.

In the see-saw change of governance, the council has been run twice by committees and now, for the second time, by a Cabinet.

The change came into effect at the council’s annual general meeting, meaning the leader and executive members will take decisions either collectively as a Cabinet or individually as executive portfolio holders.

Decisions will be open to scrutiny by all of the nonexecutive councillors via a scrutiny commission.

Formal appointments to the

various roles were also made at the AGM, with Matthew Riddle as council leader and Cabinet member for the local economy and devolution.

Councillor Riddle represents the Severn ward, comprising the villages of Olveston, Oldburyon-Severn, Rockhampton, Hill and Aust.

Toby Savage becomes deputy leader and Cabinet member for schools, skills and employment.

Fabulous berry season a DIY expert in your family you can always use their blow torch.

If you do have to use a grill make sure you get it very hot, so preheat about 15 mins before you plan to use it.

2. Make sure the crème is really cold before you attempt the sugar topping. Preferably, leave the fruit and crème in the ramekins the day before or at least the morning of the day that you want to eat it.

Makes 4- 6 individual ramekins depending on their size

She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

I LOVE the month of June as it’s when all the wonderful berries come into season. With fruit being air freighted we can now get almost anything at any time of the year, but for me nothing tastes as great as the first British strawberries or raspberries.

I want to share with you a very simple, but simply delicious dessert making the most of these luscious berries. It’s very easy to make with only 4 ingredients.

Serve it with some little fancy shop bought biscuits, or better still make my shortbread. Either way, you won’t have to spend hours in the kitchen.

Berry Brûlée 2 Essential Tips: 1. To do this dessert well you do really need a blow torch, as a domestic grill does not get hot enough. Blow torches are quite inexpensive and if you’ve got

Ingredients: • Mix of your favourite Summer berries, I use blue berries, raspberries, blackberries 400g(14oz) • Whipping cream - 284ml • Crème fraiche - 284m • Golden caster sugar- 125g(4.5oz) Here’s what you do: 1. Divide your fruit equally between the ramekins.

2. Gently mix the cream and the crème fraiche together until well blended.

3. P our the cream mixture over the top of the fruit. Smooth the top. Cover each ramekin with clingfilm.

4. Place the ramekins on the bottom of the fridge and chill well .(You can do this the day before or on the morning that you need the dessert. You must give them at least 2 hours chilling.)

5. A couple of hours before you want to serve, cover each top of the cream mixture with a thick layer of the caster sugar. Make sure all the fruit is covered and the sugar is sprinkled evenly.

(Top tip – it helps to get an even coverage if you use a teaspoon to sprinkle each ramekin in turn until you have a thick layer.)

6. To speed up the caramelising process, flick a few drops of water over the sugar immediately before using the blowtorch.

7. Hold the ignited blowtorch over the sugar playing the tip of the flame over the sugar.

8. The sugar will bubble and go golden brown. Once this has

happened, move on to the next area of sugar.

9. Repeat with all of the ramekins.

10. Put in a cool place and once completely cold, place it back in the fridge.

The top should then form a thin caramelised layer which snaps when you hit it with your spoon. www.cooking4.co.uk

Tim Bowles becomes our first Metro Mayor CONSERVATIVE Tim Bowles has been chosen as the first regional mayor for the West of England.

He triumphed in the “metro mayor’ elections which took place last month in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset.

Mr Bowles, a councillor in Winterbourne, narrowly defeated Labour’s Lesley Mansell in the second stage of the contest. The other four candidates, Lib Dem Stephen Williams, independent John Savage, Green Darren Hall and UKIP’s Aaron Foot were eliminated after the first round of voting.

The post has been created to allow devolution of some powers, funding and responsibilities from central Government to the regions.

Mr Bowles will work with the leaders of the three local authorities, Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, Matthew Riddle, leader of South Gloucestershire Council and Tim Warren, leader of B&NES.

Disposable nappy scheme is on its way A DISPOSABLE nappy collection scheme should be under way across South Gloucestershire later this year.

The council trialled a free service in January, then extended it to more families..

The scheme offers separate nappy bags for disposing of baby nappies, wipes, nappy sacks and cotton wool. Families were each given a supply of 60 nappy collection bags,

which were collected every two weeks with the black bin.

However one issue raised by some people who trialled the service was the use of plastic bags, which can be easily ripped out by scavengers.

Local resident and user of the scheme Marcie Thomson said: “The nappy bins prevent my waste bin from filling up and it

frees up much needed space. Even though I recycle everything, I find the black bin isn’t big enough for a family of six when you have a baby in nappies.”

In addition to this free service, South Gloucestershire Council also introduced Happy Nappies – a reusable nappy scheme aiming to encourage parents to change to environmentally-friendly nappies.

SPORTS STARTS HERE THE Christians are to headline the inaugural Sodbury Music Festival at Chipping Sodbury Town Football Club.

The festival, on Saturday 3 June is a fundraiser for the club’s increased expenses after two promotions in a row. Organisers say 10 bands will take to the stage at the football club with a mini funfair, and drinks tents also promised.

Nicholson achieves Badminton dream after overcoming serious neck injury

IT took 33 years but Andrew Nicholson finally won the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials - just 21 months after escaping paralysis in a fall that left him with a broken neck.

The Wiltshire-based New Zealander achieved his long deserved victory with Nereo, the 17-year-old chestnut gelding who has previously carried him to a third and sixth place at the international, as well as team bronze at the London 2012 Olympics.

In emotional scenes at the end of four days of competition, fellow riders gave three cheers to the 55-year-old Kiwi, whose CV had until then failed to include the prestigious Badminton title, despite a record number of completions and finishing as close as second.

Before the 2017 running, Nicholson had completed the event an incredible 35 times.

This year he made that 37, with a top 12 finish on Qwanza as well as nailing the title with Nereo.

long and to have been so near before has been pretty hard but I had to get over it and get on.

I’ve been able to come back and to finally win has given me an unbelievable feeling.

“I’ve had Nereo since he was four-years-old and he’s always been one of my favourites. He tries to please and gives 100 per cent all of the time.”

Nicholson said having Nereo to compete played a big part in getting him back in the saddle after his serious injury in August 2015, which led to eight hours of surgery to repair fractures and stabilise his cervical spine.

His surgeon, Jeremy Reynolds, a Bristol University graduate, told him his injury would have caused paralysis in 98 per cent of cases.

Nicholson’s victory came after an equal fifth place dressage test and jumping clear with just 2.4 time penalties around the tough four-mile cross-country course designed for the first time by Eric Winter.

That pushed him up to third position ahead of the final showjumping, where he put the pressure on by going clear with one time fault.

He then rose to the top when 2016 winners Michael Jung and La Biosthetique Sam knocked down one fence to maintain second place, while overnight leader Ingrid Klimke had a disastrous round with Horseware Hale Bob to drop to ninth position.

Tim Price finished third with Xavier Faer, while Mark Todd was fourth with NZB Campino and sixth with Leonidas II. Rosalind Canter was best of the British in fifth with Allstar B. Huge crowds witnessed the

Sodbury Sportive Majorettes in major back in the saddle medal haul A CHARITY cycle ride that has become popular nationally is getting ready for its sixth year this summer.

The Saddleback Sodbury Sportive on Sunday 13 August has enjoyed positive reviews in a number of top cycling magazines.

The number of riders has grown steadily each year from 378 in the first event in 2012 to 1,000 at last years fifth Sportive.

Event organiser Stuart Bennett, “The sportive is for everyone as it offers three routes to choose from; 30,

60 or 100 miles. A friendly atmosphere combined with great camaraderie on all the routes and back at the event HQ has made it into an event enjoyed by everyone.’

The event is run entirely by volunteers with 100% of the profits going to charities and good causes. Last year the event raised just under £25,000.

Cyclists who complete the course can also look forward to the chance to relax with a pasty and a pint and listen to live music at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club.

YATE Star Twirlers are celebrating after the returned from their latest event with five first places, one second and three thirds.

They came out top in a mixture of events including traditional majorette corps, twirl team, pom team, fancy strut and exhibition corps.

There is now just one competition left before the

National Championships in July, where the England team will be selected to compete at the European Championships in Holland.

The troupe has represented England in various categories over the past 4 years and hope 2017 will be no different.

Local golfers have good day at junior golf tournament LOCAL golfers have good day at junior golf tournament Two local golfers have finished first and second at a schools championships held at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club.

In the girls’ individual competition at the Avon Schools Championships, Caycee Perry, representing the host club,

finished in first place with a net score of 68 while Kendleshire Golf Club’s Isabel Payne came second with a score of 71.

In the Avon Boys Gross Team Championship, Chipping Sodbury School finished second. The team of Adam Blue, Tom Melling and Mitchell O’Brien also enjoyed success in the handicap event

finishing third with a team score of 138. Brimsham Green School finished fourth.

Chipping Sodbury junior Adam Blue shot a gross 75, which included a hole in one at the fourth and five birdies.

He finished in fourth place in the Best Individual Gross Competition.

Dancer Chloe soars above the rest CHIPPING Sodbury School student Chloe Hitchings has taken two podium places at the SOAR Streetdance Championships in Newport.

Chloe, who has just passed her Stagecoach Performance Arts Award with a distinction, took third place for her duo with fellow crew member Freya, and second for her solo routine.

Chloe’s dance crew, the Dynamites finished first in their category and are now off to compete in Germany at the UDO European Championships.

LOCAL racing driver Chris Hignell has had a great start to the season in the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship in his new Peugeot 106. At both the Easter "Howard's Day" meeting, and the May Bank holiday round, he managed third in class. With 14 points he is currently laying tenth in the championship table.

Hignell is one of only a

handful of racers in the UK with an MSA national B race licence, being blind in his left eye following a life threatening accident in 2008. He has found considerable sponsorship from local businesses to assist in the costs of racing at this level.

Yate Town round up season with awards night GOALKEEPER Harvey Rivers was the big winner at Yate Town’s end of season presentation night He was the supporter’s choice as Player of the Season and was presented with The Bill Weekes Memorial Shield. Harvey also won the Player’s Player award, The Youth Team’s main awards went to Daniel Dempsey for manager’s choice as Sportsman of the Year, and to Joe Shutt who was voted as Youth Team Player of the Season.

Roger Hawkins was a popular winner of The W.A Febry Rosebowl, awarded for long and meritorious service to the club.

Jackie Robinson, a very familiar figure to all supporters on match days, was awarded the Jordan Shield for her fund raising efforts. The Clubman of the Year

Shield was presented jointly to Pete Kirby and John Lewis.

Operations Director Lawrence Wortman hosted the evening and was joined by Bristol Rovers player Ollie Clarke to present the awards.

Yate Town have confirmed they are hosting a pre-season friendly against Bristol Rovers on Saturday 8th July.

Another confirmed friendly has been arranged for Saturday 29 July when Bath City visit the Jelf Stadium, and the home pre-season matches end with a visit from local rivals Chipping Sodbury Town on Tuesday 1 August.

A full programme of away friendlies is also being arranged prior to the Southern League season kicking off on Saturday 12 August.
