In a statement issued via Avon & Somerset police, Mr Dunkerton's partner, parents and other family members said: "No words will ever be able to express the deep sadness and loss that we feel as a family.

"Marcus was a muchloved son, brother, partner, A picture of Marcus Dunkerton father, step-father, uncle released by his family and son-in-law, who was very much loved by us all.

"He was an excellent father.

"We are heartbroken. He will leave a huge hole in our lives and will be greatly missed.

"We ask that people respect our privacy at what continues to be a very difficult time for ourselves and all those who knew Marcus."

Police say Mr Dunkerton was found injured at home after being "stabbed several times".

Although ambulance crews were called, he could not be saved.

Bradley appeared before Bristol Magistrates' Court on June 27, charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was remanded in custody and is now due to appear at Bristol Crown Court on July 25.

The police investigation continues, and anyone with information which could help, who has not yet spoken to officers, is being urged to contact the Major Crime Investigation Team on 101, quoting the crime reference number 5222 150 363.

Detectives particularly want to hear from anyone who was in the Railway Tavern in Wotton Road, Charfield, between 9pm and 11pm on June 24, or has video footage from the area on the night of Mr Dunkerton's death.

The murder inquiry is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker of the Avon and Somerset police Major Crime Investigation Team.

He said: "Our hearts go out to Marcus's family as they face such a devastating loss. They are being supported by specially-trained officers and have asked for privacy in their grief."

Arrest after armed raid ARMED police were called in to arrest a man at a house in Yate's Station Road.

Trains were stopped from passing through the area for 20 minutes while the operation took place at around 7am on June 16.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesperson said the man had been arrested "on suspicion of a firearms offence and sexual offences".

He was later released on conditional bail, and had not been charged as the Voice went to press.

Police confirmed that the arrest was not connected to recent appeals relating to sexual offences against girls in the south of the town and neighbouring Chipping Sodbury (see page 3).

The police spokesperson said: "Trains due to pass through Yate were held for approximately 20 minutes, for the safety of all those involved, while the arrest took place."

Third girl is molested POLICE trying to trace a man who is molesting girls by touching their feet are investigating a third assault, this time in Chipping Sodbury.

Officers say an incident on May 26, where a man accosted a girl in Robin Way, Chipping Sodbury, at about 3.15pm bears similarities to earlier incidents in nearby Slimbridge Close and Abbotswood, Yate, where girls were "inappropriately touched".

A police spokesperson said: "The three girls are aged between 10 and 15 and on each occasion the man has touched the children’s shoes or feet without their permission."

The force confirmed to the Voice last month that the incidents were being investigated as as sexual assault by touching.

Police have reissued an e-fit picture (above) based on the description given by the victim in the first incident, which happened in Slimbridge Close on January 14 at about 4pm.

He is white, in his 20s and about 5ft 9in tall, with blond hair.

The second incident, in an underpass near Abbotswood, happened at 4.30pm on March 21.

The spokesperson said a number of calls with information, made after an appeal in relation to the first two incidents, which was published in last month's Voice, were being assessed and followed up.

Police are also carrying out targeted patrols in the area and alerted schools to the incidents.

Anyone with information should call 101 and quote the crime reference number 5222 011 047 for the Slimbridge Close incident, 5222 067 867 for the Abbotswood incident or 5222 125 160 for the Robin Way incident.

Arts talent on display ART produced by Yate school pupils has gone on display at the town's heritage centre.

The works by 27 Yate Academy art students include drawings, watercolours, collage and photography.

A total of 86 pieces, including Metro Mayor Dan Norris visits the exhibition of some from other Yate art students' work schools, went on display on June 29 for Children's Art Week, with the exhibition due to run until July 6.

Visiting on the opening day was Metro Mayor Dan Norris, who encouraged other people to visit the centre as it bounces back from the pandemic.

He said: “So many young people love doing art at school, and this exhibition is a great opportunity for them to show off their talent – and a brilliant reason for local people to ‘explore local’.

"Maybe you’ll be one of the first to see the work of the next budding Banksy!"

Festival returns with a flourish CHIPPING Sodbury High Street was filled with crowds as the town's festival made a full return after two covid-hit years.

The highlights of the festival included the first staging since 2019 of the Lions Carnival parade, on June 18, and the second staging of the Music in the Street event, which was launched last year, a week earlier on the evening of June 11.

The festival also included a series of concerts, talks, cycle rides, an arts trail, murder mystery dinner and treasure hunt.

Chipping Sodbury Festival spokeswoman Kate Cox said: "What a fantastic week it was.

We are so pleased to be back.

"The rain stopped just in time for the Lions Carnival – congratulations to all who contributed.

"Music in the Street was a smash hit with people of every age. From pirates to partying in the street, it had it all!

"Thank you also to all the artists who took part, and everyone who visited the very first Chipping Sodbury Art Trail, and helped to

make it a success."

The organisers are already looking ahead to next year's festival and are keen to hear from anyone who would like to plan and run it, ahead of their annual meeting on September 9.

Record crowds for Yate Rocks in the Park ORGANISERS of Yate Rocks... in the Park say they are "over the moon" to have seen Kingsgate Park fill with people as the free festival returned, three years after it was last staged.

Hosted by Yate Town Council on the weekend of June 25-26, it was the 15th time the event had been held.

The town council said a record crowd of around 3,500 people watched a variety of local bands on the Saturday, including Rose Bruford Limited Edition, Longshots, Uncle Buck, Ragged Union, 51 Degrees and Doc Rock.

Dance groups including ROKH, 5678, Burlesque Dance Group, Redds School of Dance and Street Cred performed between the musical acts, with an open competition for dancers and a jubilee-themed fancy dress competition.

There was also entertainment from a strolling magician on stilts, interactive stalls including the Urbie Youth Bus, rides and

Councillor John Ford, chair of Yate Town Council’s events sub committee, said: "We were over the moon to be able to welcome

"It was wonderful to see the park full of people enjoying themselves after the hiatus of the last three years.

"The town council would like to thank all those who performed and those who attended for supporting the community event and for making both days such a great success."

Reprieve for threatened bus services

A DEAL to keep the region's subsidised bus services running for the next seven months has been hammered out by political leaders.

Behind-closed-doors negotiations lasting more than four hours between Metro Mayor Dan Norris and the leaders of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset councils succeeded in breaking a deadlock over who pays how much.

The rescue package means an initial seven-month extension to current contracts for 80 supported bus services which are subsidised because they are seen as important but are not commercially viable.

Had agreement not been reached, a total of 26 services could have been axed, including several serving the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area: the 202 Chipping Sodbury to Winterbourne; 680 North Yate to Chipping Sodbury to SGS College

in Filton; 626 Wotton-UnderEdge to Bristol, which calls at Rangeworthy and Charfield; the 84 and 85 Yate to Wottonunder-Edge; the 41 Malmesbury to Yate and the 967 Westerleigh to Chipping Sodbury School and Brimsham Green School.

The deal will allow time for an urgent review of where buses should run across the region ahead of new four-year contracts for services to be introduced from next April.

The political leaders agreed that supported services would be funded through a combination of contributions from the West of England Combined Authority and the three local councils.

They also agreed that any subsidised routes in future would be subject to a “value for money mechanism” - a suggestion which had seen talks being adjourned without agreement in May. Mr Norris had made this a "red line" in negotiations, after saying he was shocked

to discover the 948 school bus, from Pucklechurch via Mangotsfield to Sir Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common, was costing taxpayers £426 return per pupil, per day.

Mr Norris said: "This is a victory for common sense. We now have a long-term plan, over a four-year period, that will offer stability for passengers and bus companies who want to invest.

"Leaders agreed with me to end the bonkers situation where bus routes are funded to extraordinary levels through an historic accident – and to instead plough that cash straight back into more bus services."

Mr Savage said: "Securing this agreement to protect our bus services while we conduct an urgent wider review is a really positive step forward, providing reassurance to our communities who would otherwise face sudden cuts – on top of cuts that have already occurred – at a time when we really need to be

Phillip Hardwell running the Bristol Half-Marathon last year

Phill's marathon challenge A FORMER soldier from Yate who had a heart transplant two years ago is taking on this year's London Marathon.

Phillip Hardwell, 35, says he wants to "give something back" to others by raising money for the British Heart Foundation.

Phill was diagnosed with a rare and genetic form of heart disease called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy at the age of 29, in 2017.

His condition rapidly deteriorated, and in late 2019 he was admitted to the Royal Papworth hospital in Cambridge with severe heart failure to wait for a transplant.

The Voice reported at the time how friends and strangers alike raised money to support his young family as he spent months in hospital before and after the operation in April 2020.

Phill said: "Waiting for a heart transplant was the only option I had left.

"After an agonising five months in intensive care, being fitted with an artificial heart and being on an ECMO machine (which reoxygenates blood outside the body) for 10 days, I finally received my new heart during the first lockdown of the pandemic.

"This was thanks to my donor and their family for selflessly agreeing to organ donation, the amazing staff at Royal Papworth Hospital, as well as the groundbreaking research in technology and equipment being used today which helped to keep me alive long enough to make the transplant possible.

"Two years post transplant, my recovery has been incredible and I have been able to enjoy my second chance at life with my two sons, Reggie and Luca.

"One of my aims in life is to give something back to others who have been, or are suffering with heart problems, in the hope that by raising funds for the BHF, will allow them to live a longer and more comfortable life."

The BHF funds around £100 million of research each year into heart and circulatory diseases, and their causes, including stroke, vascular dementia and diabetes.

After making a remarkable physical comeback, Phill ran the Bristol Half-Marathon last year and took part in a charity football match to raise funds for the Royal Papworth Hospital charity.

He has set up a fundraising page for his latest challenge for the race in October, with a target of £4,000.

Phill said: "This challenge is something that is close to my heart (literally!), but something that would have been deemed impossible just over two years ago, back when I was unable to walk."

Sporting contests back at school PUPILS at Iron Acton Primary School have been enjoying a return to competitive sports – among themselves and against other schools.

The school held its first sports day in front of parents since before the pandemic in June, on the hottest day of the year so far.

Executive Headteacher Mike Riches said: "The children were Iron Acton Primary School's amazing and worked together football team as a team, supporting and encouraging each other throughout.

"We had a fantastic turn out of families with us, too – so many came to see their children for the first time in several years.

"Our PTA put on a colour run and family picnic afterwards too."

The school's football team has revived its traditional annual friendly match against North Road Primary School in Yate.

Once part of the village's annual May Day celebrations it was reinstated a few years ago but then had to be cancelled for the last two years because of covid restrictions.

North Road won the match 3-2.

The school is currently working with residents to prepare craft activities, including pine cone creatures, dream catchers and sock puppets, for the Iron Acton Horticultural Show, which takes place on September 10 at the parish hall.

Baton honour for Georgina A DISABILITY campaigner from Chipping Sodbury has been nominated for a key role in the Commonwealth Games baton relay.

Georgina Moore, who founded the GEM Boccia Club in Yate, will carry the baton on the pier at the Wave surfing lake in Easter Compton as it visits the region on July 5.

Georgina, who has a severe physical disability, hit the headlines in 2019 when she won the BBC South West Unsung Hero Award for her work with the accessible sports club.

She was nominated as a baton bearer by her dad and says she was "delighted" when the games organisers got in touch.

Georgina said: "I was so excited and honoured.

"As a para athlete myself, I have always watched the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, so it was a real honour to be selected as a Baton Bearer.

Georgina has been given a uniform and her part of the relay will take place over a mile from Badgers Lane in Almondsbury to the Wave.

She said: "They advise anyone who comes to watch stands at the start or finish to cheer me on.

"I hope there will be lots of people there to support me as I’ll be feeling very nervous and hope I don’t drop the baton!"

The baton relay covers more than 2,500 miles by land, air and sea, visiting more than 180 communities in England on a 25-day tour before it is taken to Birmingham in time for the games' opening ceremony on July 28.

App problem is zapped THE puzzle of electric car charging at a Yate’s new park and ride has been resolved after the Voice contacted the operators of a leading smartphone app.

Last month we reported confusion, after electric car app Zap-Map claimed people plugging their cars in for more than 90 minutes would be fined a £10 “overstay” charge.

Local councillors and the AA said the information was putting people off using the park and ride, especially as it is aimed at commuters and shoppers travelling into Bristol – an hour each way on the bus.

Now the founder of the app has been in touch with us and apologised, and corrected the information on the app.

Melanie Shufflebotham, co-founder of Zap-Map, said: "We apologise for any confusion which may have been caused by the information provided, and are grateful for it being brought to our attention.

"Zap-Map is the UK's leading charging map for EV drivers to search for charge points, plan longer journeys and share updates with other EV drivers. The accuracy of our data is of paramount importance and so the description of this location has been amended."

South Gloucestershire council opened the £4.5 million park and ride beside their offices on Badminton Road, Yate, in February, and included 38 electric charging points with free parking.

A spokesman said there has never been a £10 overstay charge – and they had also raised the issue with the app operators.

Yate Town Councillor Chris Willmore, who has an electric car and highlighted the issue, said she was glad the confusion had been resolved.

Chris said: "It’s brilliant news that Zap Map responded so quickly to the Voice, as EV users rely on Zap-Map."

Developer fined for rubbish dump A PROPERTY developer whose rubbish was dumped in a village near Yate has been ordered to pay more than £6,500 in fines and costs.

Ishtiaq Ishaq was prosecuted by South Gloucestershire Council’s environmental crime team after waste from homes The rubbish dumped in Hawkesbury Upton he owned, as well as his business, was found in Beech Lane in Hawkesbury Upton, and three other sites in the council's area – Bromley Heath Road at Moorend, Overscourt Woods in Siston, and Brewery Hill in Upton Cheyney – over an 11-day period in September 2020.

One of the fly-tips contained details of his home address in St George and his business address. The others contained documents from a property he owned in South Wales.

The council said Ishaq, aged 62, refused to be interviewed by council investigators.

He provided a statement in which he claimed he had paid someone to remove bags of waste from his Bristol addresses. He said the removal of waste from the South Wales property he was developing would be the builder’s responsibility.

Ishaq claimed he had acted in good faith and denied fly-tipping the waste but a council spokesperson said he had failed to identify or provide any details of the people he said he had paid to dispose of the waste, or how to contact them.

As a result, he was summonsed to court for failing in his duty of care to ensure his waste was properly disposed of and to keep records of who took it away.

Appearing at Bristol Magistrates Court in May, Ishaq pleaded guilty to the offences and was fined £3,692, ordered to pay court costs of £2,255, clear-up costs of £512 and a victim surcharge of £190 – a total of £6,649.

'Horror' at quarry road plan for wildlife haven HUNDREDS of people are objecting to plans by a quarry operator to build a temporary road which would "destroy" a woodland area.

Hanson UK has submitted a planning application to South Gloucestershire Council for planning permission to build a "temporary haul road" to transport 11 million tonnes of rock between its Southfields processing plant and Brinsham West Quarries, at the Chipping Sodbury Quarry complex.

The road would go through the Yate Rocks hamlet, a designated Site of Nature Conservation Interest to the north of the town.

But while Hanson says the mile-long road would have "significant" environmental and economic benefits, by cutting journeys and removing the need for a conveyor tunnel, outraged residents say they are "horrified" at the proposals.

A detailed objection from people who live at Yate Rocks or actively use the area has been submitted to the council, saying the plans will "cause significant and permanent damage to a very special environment, heritage, and ecology".

The Yate Rocks Neighbourhood report, which is 21 pages long, concludes that the application "only benefits Hanson’s profits", adding: "This road brings no real economic or social benefit to Yate or South Gloucestershire.

"The suggested carbon benefits are spurious and do not stand up to scrutiny.

"This is not a ‘temporary’ change but ‘medium to long term’ one.

"The haul road will devastate the local heritage landscape, habitat and biodiversity in permanent and significant ways and is contrary to both South Glos and Hanson's

own biodiversity plans and commitments."

A total of 194 comments objecting to the plans had been submitted on the council's website as the Voice went to press.

One objector, Adam Smith, said: "I was absolutely horrified to learn of this planning application.

"I visit the area for cycling and walking the dog. It's such a delight to walk down Brinsham Lane and observe the diverse wildlife."

Another, Peter Slinn, said: "I object to this proposal that would ravage the beautiful unspoilt woodland, cause great disruption to the residents of Yate Rocks village and also put the Yate shooting range out of use, which is one of the very few such facilities in the local area."

Yate Town council has also objected to the plans, saying: "The Town Council is

unanimous in objecting in the strongest possible terms to this application, which...will destroy an SNCI and have a serious adverse impact on the residents of Yate Rocks, seriously affect the integrity of sites of high heritage importance and significantly adversely affect local ecology, purely to save money."

The town council says the road would "destroy" the SNCI, ecological, historic and heritage status of the site, and has also objected to the procedures and reports prepared by Hanson.

The Environment Agency has said it has "no objection in principle" to the plan, provided it meets conditions.

Objectors have pointed out that the site is part of South Gloucestershire Council's proposed Strategic Green Infrastructure Network.

The council now has to decide whether to grant the scheme planning permission.

Rotary club calls it a day A CLUB which has raised money for the Yate community for more than 30 years has closed.

Members of the Rotary Club of Yate and District said they had taken the decision to disband at the end of June with "great sadness".

President Marian Gilpin said membership of the club, which was founded in 1991, had been "severely reduced during the Covid-19 pandemic."

She said: "Recognising that most members have become ‘senior citizens’, the feeling is that Yate Rotary will not be able to function in the true spirit of Rotary – adequately to serve the community of Yate.

"We would like to thank everyone who has supported our events during the past 30 years, especially the South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival, the Swimathon, and the Tree of Light.

The club donated its remaining £4,000 of funds to schools after inviting them to make presentations at a 'Dragon’s Den'style event at Yate Academy on June 18.

Pupils had to make the presentations themselves, with £1,000 on offer to secondary schools and £500 to primaries.

Rotary Community Services Committee chairman Theo White said: "The standard of presentations was very high, and showed competent use of Powerpoint and video to illustrate the funding needs for the various projects we considered.

"All put forward strong arguments, asking for financial support for very worthwhile projects, and all were awarded the funding they had requested.

"We were impressed by the confidence demonstrated by the participants, and certificates will be sent out to each of them.

Club needs new blood to join Reg, 103 A CHIPPING Sodbury-based club is celebrating one member’s 103rd birthday but is looking for younger people to join up.

Retired builders’ merchant and Second World War veteran Reg Holbrook treated friends and members of South Cotswolds Probus club to a restaurant meal for his birthday.

Club president Peter Chaplin said: "It is ironic that while Reg is a great member, we do need some younger people to join.”

Probus, or Professional Retired Businessmen’s Club, started in the UK in 1965, and has 400,000 members nationally.

Mr Chaplin, a retired police dog handler, said: "It’s a boys' club for grown-ups.

"I’m 69 and I’m the youngest in our branch. We have a few in their 90s, and lots in their 80s and 70s, ranging from retired bank managers to farmers and people from the aerospace industry.

"Once people retire, I am sure many wives would agree they be delighted for them to be out from under their feet for a couple of hours a week.

"We know we have to be more widely appealing – we have good speakers, functions and trips out. Probus is an opportunity to spread your wings, and meet interesting

"We even have a Welfare Officer, who tries to keep abreast of people in the club, so if anyone is unwell or in need of some TLC we will turn up and support them."

While some Probus clubs have men and women members, South Cotswolds has traditionally been for men only - but Peter says that could soon change.

He said: "We are considering if we should open our doors to ladies as well. We would like to hear from retired business women.”

Reg, who lives in Cambrian Green Court in Yate, joined Probus to improve his social life.

He said: "I lived on my own after my wife died, and they have been good for my social life.

"Probus has helped me and people living on their own since the lockdowns, because the company is so good.”

Reg was born in Alexandra Road in Frampton Cotterell, and went to the old village school in Woodend Road.

During the war he was in the Home Guard, then served in the Royal Navy.

At 103, he’s keeping up with 21st century life, and only stopped driving a Toyota hybrid car after his 100th birthday.

Reg said: "I have an iPad and I send emails – I have an iPhone too, but don’t use it much.”

n NEWS YATE mum Christine Milsom worked at the town's Lidl supermarket for more than 25 years.

And after being diagnosed with cancer, she told her family that when she died, she wanted her funeral procession to visit the store on the way to the ceremony.

Christine had worked in the Kennedy Way shop since it opened in 1995, and as the longest-serving member of staff, she was invited to cut the ribbon when it was refurbished in 2020.

After she died in May, aged 55, her husband Wayne, daughter Laura and son George were determined that her last wishes should be respected.

Wayne said: "She wanted a lap of honour round the car park, and a horse and cart and wicker basket.

"And she got it all – everything she wanted. It was lovely."

James Scrimshaw of CURA CLINICAL explains how new technologies are providing effective answers to people’s pain and suffering

t CURA we’re always striving to find new ways of effectively treating people’s injuries. After working for 26 years with people in pain, I identified a significant lack of options for many people for whom hands-on care/rehab was ineffective, yet who weren’t ready for, or suited to surgery or other invasive procedures.

In my search to solve this problem, my practice has adopted several cutting-edge non-invasive technologies that initiate healing, improve function and manage pain in the most chronic of conditions, be it arthritic, old injury or post- surgical pain.

We use a combination of MBST cell regeneration from Germany, Class IV Laser from the States, and new to market painmanagement device Biowave to provide a multilayered approach to healing and painmanagement. ■

CASE STUDY 2 Rachael was suffering from significant pain and restrictions relating to OA of her left knee. She’s really active, a really keen golfer. She’s now 8 months post MBST for knee cartilage and has just got back from a golfing holiday, playing 11 times with no pain! It’s had an amazing effect on her. She’s off pain killers, no night pain and full mobility. Well done Rachael.

n YATE HERITAGE CENTRE

Station Road: Yate's former high street IF you have been in Station Road recently, you may have seen a history trail produced by Yate Town Council entitled 'Old Yate'.

Celebrating the heritage of the road, the project was designed to tie in with the recent Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Display boards and panels adorned certain shops and businesses during June, telling the story of the buildings where they were displayed.

Station Road, which I have often termed 'Yate’s former high street', was a main route out of the town towards Bristol for many centuries.

However, it was the coming of the railway, in 1844, which prompted the road to become a significant arterial route. It gradually developed up to 1914, with businesses such as the Railway pub and Yate Market becoming established, while new residential villas came to litter the south side of the road by 1910.

The emergence of modern industry in the Great War provided the final thrust to Station Road’s transformation into a shopping street. From then until the 1960s, the two major factories on Station Road brought hundreds of workers

The Post Office and Boulton's Butcher's c1914. Today these are the Gatehouse Church frontage and Motor Aids. to the parish from Bristol and beyond.

On the back of local industry, new developments, such as the Heathfield and Aerodrome estates, provided a market for Station Road businesses. By the 1920s and 1930s, there were three butchers, as well as bakers, general stores and of course, the Co-op.

The emergence of Yate Shopping Centre effectively sounded the death knell for Station Road as a “high street”. Gradually,

butchers and grocers were supplanted by estate agents and shops providing services.

The Old Yate project has enabled us to look again at some of the old buildings, using earlier images.

Initially, many buildings were private residences. Gradually, as the parish grew, businesses such

as Boulton Brothers butchers occupied the original properties.

The pre-war shops tended to resemble private residences, with smaller shop frontages than today, such as the Yate post office, with more discreet advertising.

Many of the participating shops of today were transformed during the latter decades of the 20th century. Estate agent and service businesses constructed large new frontages on ground floors, while keeping the architecture of the upper storeys and roofing.

By contrast, the building now occupied by Terry’s Cycle Shop had its frontage utterly changed.

This proved the most difficult shop to identify. The original red brick property was converted to a shop which was, for many years, known as Miss Redman’s drapery store, until the 1960s. Subsequent refurbishments saw the frontage enlarged and the brickwork receive cladding, obscuring any idea of its original appearance.

Ceremonies and street parties for Queen FROM official commemorations and organised events to neighbourhood street parties, thousands of people in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area found their own way to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Events kicked off on June 2 with an official proclamation in Chipping Sodbury High Street and beacon lighting ceremonies, at the Ridings in Chipping Sodbury and Tyler's Field in Yate.

The beacons were among 3,000 lit across the UK and Commonwealth to mark the Queen's 70-year reign.

At Tyler's field people were encouraged to bring a picnic and entertainment including a parade by 2509 (Chipping Sodbury) Squadron Air Cadets, the 1st Yate Company Boys Brigade and a selection of music by the Rock Choir.

Pipers performed at both the Yate and Chipping Sodbury events, with the beacons lit by in ceremonies led by town mayors Cheryl Kirby and James Ball respectively.

Events continued throughout the four-day bank holiday weekend.

One of the biggest was the Chipping Sodbury Jubilee Big Lunch, attended by more than 2,000 people on Sunday, June 5.

Organiser Alexandra Dent said: "We knew lots of people were coming from word of mouth but we were amazed at the numbers who came along right from the start, to celebrate the Jubilee and because they know the Big Lunch is a fun, free day packed full of entertainment.

"The efforts people made with outfits, decorations for their gazebos and the cakes on display were wonderful.

"Broad Street was full of red, white and blue, with everyone in high spirits to celebrate the occasion and I think people were genuinely happy to be back at an event like this after so long."

Other streets were closed to allow neighbours to hold parties, from Yate to Hawkesbury Upton and Badminton.

An easy meal for hot days FEELING too hot and don’t know what to cook?

On some days – like the day I wrote this article, with the temperature hovering around 30C – I often feel I don’t know what to cook and I’m not really hungry.

Judging by the a few overheard

comments in the supermarket, I wasn’t alone in this feeling.

So I hope my recipe for this month hits the spot for you when you are sweltering in the heat.

It looks pretty enough for a dinner party but is easy enough for a mid-week supper.

If you want to make it even easier, and your supermarket has a seal and cook in the bag facility on its fish counter, you can use that and just make the horseradish sauce and veg, to go with the fish.

Easy peasy – and no fish smells in the kitchen!

A top tip on dealing with fishy smells – if you burn a candle in the kitchen when cooking fish, it helps to eliminate the odour. Any scented candle will do: it doesn’t have to be a so-called chef’s candle, which is usually more expensive.

Hope all that helps you next time you are in sweltering heat.

Rainbow trout with horseradish yogurt and balsamic beets

Serves 2 Ingredients: Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 x 100g rainbow trout fillets, skin on Olive oil 2 heaped tbsp natural yoghurt ½ lemon 1 heaped tsp grated horseradish for a real kick or creamed horseradish for a milder taste 4 cooked beetroots, quartered – optional Balsamic vinegar Knob of butter 2 handfuls of watercress, washed

and spun dry Extra virgin olive oil Serve with boiled baby potatoes, roasted fennel and courgettes.

Here’s what you do: 1. F irst prepare the yogurt and beets. Using a small bowl, mix the yogurt and the horseradish with the juice of half a lemon and a pinch of sea salt. Taste to see if it’s to your liking. In a separate bowl, dress the beets with a good splash of balsamic and a little pepper.

2. Then put a large frying pan on a medium heat. Season the trout on both sides with a pinch of salt and pepper. Add a good glug of olive oil to the pan and let it heat up.

3. O nce hot, put in the trout, skinside down (you may have to do this in two batches). Press down on the fish with a fish slice, to help the skin crisp up. Cook for four minutes, jiggling the pan every now and then, and turning for the last 20 seconds or so to finish it off – you want to cook it about 90% of the way through on the skin side.

4. P lace 2 fillets on each plate and top each portion with a good dollop of horseradish yoghurt, a spoonful of dressed beets and a little watercress. You could serve with boiled new potatoes.

n LOCAL MP

Free swimming scheme made permanent WITH three young children, I know how important it is for our local health and family services to receive support and investment.

This is why, working alongside Circadian Trust and South Gloucestershire Council’s public health team, I was delighted to have helped launch a new scheme offering free swimming to local expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy.

Swimming has numerous benefits specifically for pregnant women, such as preventing diabetes during pregnancy, reducing the need for caesarean sections, improved fitness and reducing high blood pressure.

Swimming can also have a long-term effect on a child’s development beyond birth, with further research suggesting that it has a potential for improving the mental and physical health of

children well into adulthood.

The Free Swimming Pilot scheme was launched in March 2020, however due to the pandemic was postponed for few months, before being relaunched in April last year.

I am delighted that following the pilot scheme’s year-long trial, Circadian Trust are now working with our local public health team to extend the scheme permanently, and make this a permanent fixture and service for pregnant women living in South Gloucestershire.

The free service has been offered in Active Leisure Centre across South Gloucestershire, including Yate and Thornbury.

Further details and guidance for women who are interested in the scheme will be announced very soon.

Delivering this promise of free

swimming has been an incredibly important objective in my positive plan for health and family life here in South Gloucestershire.

The idea for such an initiative came from new research which demonstrates the huge benefits of exercise, and in particular swimming, for pregnant women.

The Royal College of Midwifery welcomed reports from NHS England, as well as recommendations from the Government’s Chief Medical Officer, who advised parents to aim for 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity during pregnancy.

Swimming is widely recognised as a low-impact method of aerobic exercise, and is particularly good for pregnant women, as it can be performed safely in all three trimesters.

Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury Classic Car Run MORE than 200 cars and motorbikes took part in our club’s 26th Classic Car Run, which took place on June 26.

Entrants lined up in Chipping Sodbury High Street before leaving for a tour of the countryside, including a coffee stop at Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club.

Drivers returned to the Ridings for lunch and for the public to admire the wonderful array of vehicles on show. Profits for the event go towards the club’s support for deserving causes in our local community and beyond.

The club rounded off the Rotary year in style with a very enjoyable President’s Dinner at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club. In his last

days as the club President, Keith Pattison made a club community award to Barbara Bennett, a longstanding member of Chipping Sodbury Inner Wheel Club, for her sustained efforts and commitment in fundraising for the RNLI and in recognition of the many years of service to the activities of the Inner Wheel Club.

The club’s charity golf day on May 26 saw 20 teams enjoying the competition and raising over £2,700 for Freewheelers EVS, the local blood bikes charity. This sum was matched with a similar donation from St James’s Place, a financial planning and investment company.

The club has made a sizable financial donation to Kyiv Rotary Club in Ukraine to help their significant humanitarian efforts.

We also made a financial donation to ALFA Christian Community, a small Bristol-based charity focusing on supporting adults with learning difficulties and disabilities.

The club was delighted to support the Rotary-sponsored Kids Out event at Cattle Country Adventure Park, where for 500 children with learning difficulties.

Our club sponsored 22 pupils and teachers from Culverhill School in Yate, arranging transport and providing t-shirts, and helped with

We have made a financial donation to St John’s Mead Primary School, to assist with the costs of sending years 5 and 6 pupils for a

Yate & Sodbury U3A U3A’s Patchwork and Quilting Group raised a grand total of £760 for Ukraine at their recent event at the Old Grammar School in Chipping Sodbury.

Quilts inspired by Ukraine’s national colours made for the event.

As well as items on display, cream teas were available and a range of handicraft items on sale.

The highlight was a workroom dedicated to making shopping bags from scraps of recycled fabric.

The group are great enthusiasts for this craft, as it reduces plastic waste, as well as being a creative way of using up pieces of leftover material and old clothes.

The group have made over a thousand bags so far.

The day was fun for everyone involved, and the group were delighted with the sum they managed to raise.

Congratulations to all who took part and a big thank you to everyone who came along.

Posh frocks at the jubilee meeting

Chipping Sodbury WI SUPERMARKET flowers were not on the agenda at the last WI meeting, as Christine from Victoria Westlake transformed a black bucket of red white and blue flowers to a beautiful jubilee basket flower arrangement.

The finished item would not look out of place in any home, and was the main prize in the raffle.

It was won by a well-deserving member, Chris Gough, who does a lot for the WI. As this was the jubilee meeting, the members arrived in their posh frocks – certainly a change from my usual attire of skinny jeans - and enjoyed nibbles and a jubilee cake.

The next meeting is on July 7 in the Old Grammar School at 7.30pm, due to a performance taking place in the Town Hall. The speaker is Alan Scott with a talk on The Mysteries of the Beehive.

Come along and make new friends, and enjoy the various activities.

Yate WI YATE WI met at Wapley Bushes in June, where we had a most interesting tour of the nature reserve led by Paul Hulbert from the Wapley Bushes Conservation Group. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the reserve and surrounding area, as well as how the reserve is managed to encourage as much diversity for fauna and flora as possible, while still maintaining it as an area for local residents to explore and enjoy.

We were very lucky with it being a lovely warm early summer evening, and we finished the evening by sharing hot drinks and nibbles as the sun went down, listening to the noises of nature but of course sharing a time of chat and laughter.

Our next meeting on July 11 is back at Poole Court, with a talk from the South West Children’s Hospice. Before then some members will be meeting in smaller groups at our Craft Evening, Walking Group and Coffee Morning.

Old Sodbury WI CONGRATULATIONS and celebrations – our WI is 103 years old this month and still going strong. Nowadays we also have a national voice and treated with respect by our government ministers: remember Wembley and Tony Blair? I was there!

Thank you to committee members for the delicious assortment of individual cup cakes and also the lovely table flowers and pretty Birthday buttonholes given monthly.

June saw our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in the football field on Sunday June 5, with Bake Off and potato challenges and a tree planting in the Avenue of the new Woodland project in our village. We are also adding tulip bulbs to our Golden Jubilee garden in the village hall car park. Many thanks to our gardeners for making it so attractive and weed free.

Cup final win for Yate Under 16s YOUTH football side Yate United Under 16s finished their season in the best possible way, with a cup final win over Knowle West club Mendip.

The two league encounters between the clubs had been badtempered affairs, but with three excellent FA officials in charge of the game, Yate's superior skill, tactics and teamwork came to the fore and they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Mendip had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping the score down, with a string of superb saves. Yate's goal scorers were Travis Jackson, Jamie Hawkings and a brace from man of the match Alfie Davis.

Other great games were played by captain Will Bennett and the rest of the back four: Uzi Uazengisa, Ash Watts and Alfie Corbett.

Their time as U16s now over, the players are forming a new team to play at U18 level.

First team's success rubs off at Chipping Sodbury CHIPPING Sodbury are in good shape and good heart as the cricket season approaches its halfway point.

The first XI made a tremendous start to their campaign, winning their opening seven matches to open up a healthy lead at the top of Division One in the Gloucestershire County League.

And that success has rubbed off on the club’s remaining Saturday sides, with the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths all recording important wins to be competitive in their respective divisions.

Sodbury Women, too, started the summer in some style, with victories in their first two South Division matches, including an exciting five-wicket triumph with just two balls to spare over local rivals Thornbury.

The story is being replicated at youth level, where Sodbury’s junior sides have been making an impact in Bristol Youth League age-group matches.

Encouraging series of early performances for Sodbury’s rejuvenated Sunday XI and mixed club side in the new Bristol Midweek T20 League mean there’s plenty of positives for chairman Andy Shield to reflect on.

Chipping Sodbury Netball Club CHIPPING Sodbury Netball Club have completed the first full season since COVID-19 halted both the 2019/20 and 20/21 seasons.

All four of the club’s teams started the season full of excitement to finally be able to play again, as well as at the prospect of playing under new head coach Frankie Nutt.

Unfortunately, despite the best preparation of the Avon netball league, the dreaded covid still had a heavy impact on the season, with many games having to be cancelled or rearranged due to player

shortages and outbreaks.

to finish.

To round off the season, in June a number of players represented the club at an end of season tournament held at Abbeywood Community School.

This was a great way to celebrate the club's success and play some fun netball, before taking a well-deserved break over the summer months.

For the upcoming 22/23 season the club will have four teams in the Avon league, spanning from the Premier division through to Division 8.

Team selection will be taking place in July and training will begin in August.

Everyone at the club is excited for a new season to begin and can’t wait to get back to winning ways!

Park & ride is in the wrong place I KNOW a number of local people have concerns regarding the new park & ride.

One Friday afternoon recently I walked there and spoke to some members of the public on their views of the new system.

I found less than a dozen cars: one person I spoke to was sitting in his car while the children played on their bikes – he said he had been taking them there because it was always quiet!

I checked the board for the next bus. It was due in 2 minutes but it never turned up. The second one never turned up, the third one did, the following bus was cancelled.

I did get to speak to two other people, who both drove to the P&R from the other side of Yate.

Where is the sense in this? I thought the whole idea of the P&R was to help to ease congestion?

I have no problems with the idea of the P&R but have said before that this is in the wrong place.

It should be at the other side of Yate: the idea was to stop the amount of people driving

down Station Road, and I cannot understand what help this is to the environment.

I’m disappointed that my suggestion a couple of years ago to have another P&R, or at least re-site this one, wasn’t taken on board.

The park and rides I’m familiar with have a bus already waiting to pick up passengers. The people I spoke to waited another 15 minutes for a bus, after two failed to turn up.

I fail to see much benefit of this to the people of Yate.

It's not just eels who need help in the river I WOULD like to question some things in the article "Eels given a helping hand" (Voice, June).

Environment Agency experts saying that eels can't swim very well makes no sense at all, as eels migrate to the Sargasso Sea, which is the other side of the Atlantic, to spawn.

Problems in the river started several years ago, when a major

pollution incident wiped out most fish from Dodington to Cog Mill.

That section of the river has taken many years to recover, as it has not been restocked and fish moved in from the Ladden and Westerleigh Brook.

The Ladden has its own problems, due to pumping water from Sodbury quarry.

The increase in otters, combined with increasing pollution and less water flow over the years, has contributed to the river's decline.

While I agree that anything positive done to the river is only good, it is a shame that there is no long term aim to restore balance in the river, which may include control on the number of otters, providing better habitat, restocking and controlling pollution.

Fish, invertebrates and other river life need our help! Bristol Avon Rivers Trust is taking action in your local area to educate everyone that only rain should be going down the drain.

Throughout June 2022 BART has been running an exciting Yellow Fish campaign in the local area to help improve water quality in the Bristol Frome, holding a series of Yellowfish events with local schools and community groups.

Volunteers have joined us to mark a yellow fish shape next to surface drains and are handing out posters to remind everyone that only rain should be going down the drains, in order to protect our rivers and their wildlife.

Keep an eye out for a yellow fish near you, and spread the message: only rain down the drain!
