School principal steps down at Yate Academy THE principal of Yate Academy has left his role just four months after the school became part of the Greenshaw Learning Trust (GLT).

Paul Skipp had held the position since September 2015 but has now left to “pursue other senior leadership interests”.

The chairman of governors, Darren Reynolds, said Mr Skipp had led the school through a number of changes, including the transfer to Greenshaw after nine years of being part of the Ridings’ Federation of Academies.

Mike Cooper, chairman of GLT, said: “We are extremely grateful for all the work that Paul has undertaken in driving improvements in both the primary and the secondary school and we wish him well for the future.

“Paul leaves Yate Academy in a good position and with the team that’s in place and the support of the trust ,it will continue on its journey of improvement.”

Mr Skipp said: "Yate Academy is an inspirational and unique school and it will always retain a special place in my heart.

Town leaders buy Yate open space LANDLOCKED open space in Yate is now in the ownership of the town council after a long campaign to stop it being developed for housing.

Two planning appeals against South Gloucestershire Council’s refusal to allow building on the site to the rear of Cambrian Drive were lost by Woodstock Homes, which wanted to put 18 homes on the plot.

A bungalow in Cambrian Drive would also have had to be demolished to create an access to the site.

After the second planning inquiry, Yate Town Council, which had strongly opposed the housing proposals, decided to approach the landowner to try and buy the land and after “much negotiation” acquired it for £35,000.

Civic leaders said the land, which adjoins public open space at Halifax Road, was now “in the safe hands” of the town council, which would protect and look after it for future generations to enjoy.

There has already been a clean-up of the land by council staff, ahead of a work day with local residents to clear litter and carry out some planting to help improve the site.

Water difference! Refurbished Yate pond set to become haven for wildlife SUCCESSFUL fundraising has resulted in the official opening of a newly refurbished wildlife conservation pond in Yate.

The pond in Coopers Drive had become overgrown and stagnant but with clearance and other work carried out, should now become a haven for frogs, toads, great crested newts and other creatures.

Funding for the pond came through the Wessex Watermark Award scheme that supports environmental projects.

It allocates grants once applications have been considered by a panel of experts chaired by botanist, television presenter and Conservation Foundation co-founder David Bellamy.

Money also came from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme after the project won a public vote

The Friends of Brimsham Park said as part of the

refurbishment, two trees were cut back to increase the amount of sunlight reaching the pond.

A large pond liner was also

installed, complete with a dipping platform for children, as well as nesting boxes to attract birds.

Other work included putting up new fencing and planting wild flowers and insect-loving plants to improve the biodiversity of the area.

Sam McDonald, of the Friends, said: "The pond has been designed with children in mind and we hope schools and local community groups will benefit greatly from it.”

Caroline Francis, of Wessex Water, attended the opening of the pond along with Yate mayor John Ford.

She said: "I originally presented the (Watermark) cheque so it's been great to be able to come back and see how the money has made a real difference to the community.”

Iron Acton goes to Parliament LOCAL MP Luke Hall has welcomed residents of Iron Acton to Parliament as part of his village tour campaign.

Residents began the day with a tour of the Houses of Parliament, including the House of Lords, House of Commons, the Royal Gallery and Westminster Hall.

Mr Hall also held a question and answer session in one of Westminster’s committee rooms before a trip to the riverside terrace.

The MP said; “I’m eager to continue putting on these tours and hope to invite many more towns and villages throughout the year.”

Men in Sheds group on hunt for premises as interest grows A RECENTLY established Men in Sheds group in Yate is searching for premises where it can meet and set up a workshop.

The increasingly popular movement has seen a number of groups formed around the country, primarily for older men who want to learn new skills, share existing hobbies and interests, take part in community projects and make new friends.

More than 100 people attended a drop-in event in Yate when the idea for a town group was put forward

by Yate Town Council.

It meant an initial idea of using an old shipping container as a base had to be abandoned and more suitable premises sought.

Currently, the group’s members meet at the town’s Armadillo youth cafe on Thursdays at 10.30am.

Despite the name, interest has also been shown in the project by women.

New year, new leader at Yate Academy as principal moves on YATE Academy is going through yet another change after Paul Skipp stepped down as the school’s principal.

Mr Skipp had been in the role since September 2015, when it was part of the Ridings’ Federation of Academies.

But it formally broke away from the federation at the beginning of the current academic year and became part of the Greenshaw Learning Trust.

The start of the new era was seen as an opportunity to move on from troubled times surrounding the Ridings’ Federation, with which Yate had had a nine-year association.

Darren Reynolds, chairman of governors at the school, said Mr Skipp had “led the academy through a range of positive changes”, including its transfer into the Greenshaw Learning Trust, but that he felt it was now

the right time to pursue other senior leadership interests.

The secondary school part of the academy is now being led

by Isabel Ambrose, while the primary phase, Woodlands, is in the charge of Kirsty Borrill.

Mr Skipp said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the school since I first joined in April 2015 as deputy principal.

“The ensuing years have seen many changes but I now feel the school is in a great position from which to move from strength to strength.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to work with so many fantastic young people, many of whom have gone on to achieve wonderful things and are a huge credit to the school and their community.”

He thanked parents and carers for the support they had given him and the staff and governors at Yate for their hard

work and dedication.

More than two years ago, the academy was told by education watchdog Ofsted that it required improvement.

It was one of a number of problems facing the Ridings’ Federation during a difficult period - its Winterbourne International Academy (WIA) had also been poorly rated by Ofsted, it had financial problems and lost two consecutive shortlived chief executive principals.

The Department for Education decided the Yate academy should be “re-brokered” and transferred into a trust that could provide the support the school required, leading to the move to Greenshaw.

Meanwhile, WIA is about to formally join the locally-based Olympus Academy Trust as work continues to get it out of special measures.

n NEWS FIREFIGHTER Di Clack raised more than £1,600 for two charities after completing a tough 12-hour cycling challenge.

Di, 41, of Chipping Sodbury, has worked for Avon Fire and Rescue Service for 13 years and was encouraged during the effort by a number of supporters pedalling with her for shorter periods.

Throughout the day, more than 100 people turned up at Yate’s leisure centre now known as Yate Active Lifestyle Centre to cycle with her in a new group cycle studio within the complex.

It is estimated that between them all, they cycled the equivalent of 2,500km - more than 1,500 miles - with Di pedalling up to 200km - about 120 miles - on her bike alone.

She said: “The last hour was a real struggle as my legs completed seized up.

“One of the spin instructors at the centre cycled with me for the last hour and that really helped me to push through it.

“When it was finally over, I felt very emotional and so very grateful to everyone who played a part in making this event happen.

“I’d never done anything like this before so it was rather overwhelming.”

With the final total still rising, some of the money raised will go to Brain Tumour Research, a charity chosen because a close friend of Di, who is also a Godmother to her son, has faced a challenging time due to having a tumour diagnosed in 2015.

Di was helped to prepare for her challenge by staff at the leisure centre over six months, training up to five times a week using a range of its equipment.

She said: “I’m planning to break the world record for the furthest distance travelled on a spin bike by a female in 60 minutes once I’ve recuperated from this challenge, so I’m sure the centre hasn’t heard the last of me yet.”

manager, said: “When Di asked for our support in organising this event, we were delighted to help her out.

“The community rallied round Di to help with the challenge and we were proud to be a part of it. We look forward to supporting her with any future challenges she pursues.”

Funding worries for Shopmobility in Yate A SCHEME that provides mobility scooters and wheelchairs in Yate Shopping Centre could limit its opening hours or even close if funding concerns continue.

Shopmobility was established 12 years ago and soon became a lifeline for many South Gloucestershire residents, offering them independence so they could visit the shops and services within the centre.

But those running the scheme said in difficult economic times, there were worries about continued and future funding for the service, with some of its South Gloucestershire Council funding due to end.

Shopmobility is based in Yate's library and attracts

users from all over South Gloucestershire and further afield.

Since its launch in 2006, hundreds of people have registered with the scheme.

Vice-chairman David Bell, a founding trustee since 2004, said: "We hope we can continue this vital, much-needed service for our users but that is dependent on continued funding."

Councillor Janet Biggin, who is chairwoman of Shopmobility South Gloucestershire, said: “People come from all over South Gloucestershire and beyond to use Shopmobility as the shopping centre is flat and easily accessible.

district, apart from the Mall at Cribbs Causeway, where people can visit a variety of shops and services through scooter hire.

“We are really making a difference to those people who use the service to visit the shopping centre - allowing independence to our service users, who would be isolated without it."

As well as daily hire, Shopmobility also hires scooters and wheelchairs for longer periods to those with limited mobility.

In an annual service users’ survey, many people said the service helped them socially as they were able to get out and about, helping to reduce social isolation and improve their

health generally. There were even many calls for increased opening hours.

Over the years, the scheme has received funding from a number of sources, including South Gloucestershire Council, the National Lottery, individual donations and town and parish councils.

The generation game

W

hen the Queen turned 90 on 21 April 2016, she served as a very public reminder of how much longer, as a society, we are living. In her own family, four genera�ons are now all alive at the same �me, from the Queen herself down to her latest great grandchild, Princess Charlo�e.

An increasing number of families now find themselves in the same posi�on, which has implica�ons for financial planning. As a nonagenarian, Her Majesty is far from alone. The number of people over 90 years old rose by a third between 2002 and 2012, according to a report published by the Office for Na�onal Sta�s�cs in 2015(1).It also says that the number of over-85s in the UK is likely to more than double by 2039, to 3.4 million; longevity and the mul�-genera�onal family are here to stay(2). The first Cotswold Edge Literary Festival will run from 16-24 June. A full week of events are planned with some big names already booked for the event, which will be held in venues across South Gloucestershire.

The novelist, journalist and commentator Will Self will be appearing as well as the writer of ‘ The Boy with the Top Knot’, Sathnam Sanghera. Local best selling writer Susan Lewis has also been booked for the festival.

Children’s author and adult poet AF Harold has been signed up to provide inspiring sessions for schoolchildren and the owner of the Bristol Wine School, Tristan Darby will give people a taste of drink in literature through the ages.

More bookings will be announced in the next few weeks, with Yate and Sodbury Voice an official partner to the festival.

The festival is the brainchild of Cotswold Edge Events, a company set up to provide entertainment in the South Gloucestershire area. They’ve already held sold out music concerts in the area and have the Acoustic Straws and Blues Band lined up for 2018.

Organiser Mark Lloyd said: “We’re very excited about launching the literary festival, with some big names already booked and more to come. People in South Gloucestershire enjoy their share of culture and the idea of Cotswold Edge Events is to provide this on their doorstep, and not have to always travel into Bristol or Bath.”

Fund raising family donate toys and gifts to young patients TOYS, books and clothes to fit premature babies were given to Bristol Children’s Hospital by a Yate father and daughter after they saw a wish list for young patients.

The hospital, with the Grand Appeal that supports it, drew up the list to make life brighter for children in its care and their families.

Sarah Hitchings, who has raised money for the appeal for nearly seven years, spoke to her dad, Jerry Milner, and he set the ball rolling with a £300 donation.

Sarah said: “I then asked my family and friends to donate new items.”

Tesco in Yate also contributed by giving discounts and vouchers on items bought for the children.

Once everything had been bought, Sarah and her dad, who runs CAMB Machine Knives in Yate, went to the hospital to hand over the gifts.

n NEWS MORE than 90 residents attended an open meeting as part of the campaign to save a Chipping Sodbury pub.

They were given an update on the status of a planning appeal regarding the Tern Inn, which faces demolition to make way for 26 new flats and a cafe.

The future of the Heron Way pub has been in doubt since the outline application was made to knock down the inn.

More than 300 objections were submitted to South Gloucestershire Council planners, as well as petitions against the development, with the council ultimately rejecting the proposal.

Among the grounds for the decision were the loss to the community of the pub and a car park, the effect on the “vitality and viability” of local shops and increased congestion on surrounding roads due to the loss of parking.

That gives the community six months to put a bid together if the landowner ultimately decides to sell.

However, an appeal against

the decision was made by agents acting for applicant Mark Lewis.

Despite a delay in the process due to missing documents, the appeal eventually became valid and opponents are now waiting for a date for the inquiry to be set.

Ken Thomas, chairman of the Birds Residents’ Group, was pleased at the turn-out for the recent public meeting.

He said: “This shows the strength of support in our campaign to save the Tern Inn and car park.”

Those at the meeting heard about a vision for the future of the pub and learnt about funding for a proposed bid for it in line with its ACV status.

It is now planned to create a newsletter for local households, with information on how to pledge support.

Although the pub had continued to trade when the application was submitted, it closed in June when the lease expired and was subsequently boarded up. Despite the setback, campaigners are still determined to see it re-opened.

Grenville on BBC's talent show THE man behind the Good Afternoon choir in Yate & Chipping Sodbury is one of the 100 judges on the new BBC1 Saturday night talent show All Together Now Grenville Jones, is one of the panel of invited judges who choose the winners each week to go forward to sing for a £50,000 prize in the final on March 3.

Grenville said; “It’s a great series and certainly different from all the other TV talent and singing shows. The format of judging by a large group representing all types of music and entertainment makes for some fascinating viewing.”

Record-breaking quiz night gives cash support to brain tumour charity MORE than £1,700 was raised for a brain tumour charity when general knowledge enthusiasts took part in an annual quiz.

The event was organised by the Sodbury and Yate Business Association - SYBA - with 21 teams comprising more than 100 people taking part.

It was held in aid of the group’s charity of the year, the Thornbury-based Brain Tumour Support, which was originally founded as Hammer Out. A combination of donations, a raffle, ticket sales and business sponsorship raised some £1,200 and that was boosted with a further £500 from Lloyds Bank, setting a new record for the event.

Linda Banister and Tracy Francksen, the outgoing jointchairwomen of SYBA, said they were overwhelmed at people’s generosity.

Linda said: “This was such a terrific event for us to end our five-year tenure. We are so pleased to have broken our previous fundraising records and it’s always such a joy to bring the community together to raise funds for a charity that is close to our hearts.”

SYBA has helped Brain Tumour Support during the past year with backing from sponsors and volunteers.

Folk club looks for new blood

A FOLK club in Chipping Sodbury is looking for more people to attend their music evenings.

The club started three years ago, meeting on the first Thursday of the month from 8pm at the Beaufort Pub in Chipping Sodbury. A previous

club in the town has stopped in the 1970’s The current club has been well attended, but there has been a dip in numbers recently and organisers are keen to keep the nights going.

There are floor spots for people who want to perform on

the night and a pre -arranged Spotlight set each night that has slightly longer set of around 4 songs. Twice a year the club has a guest night with a professional performer on stage.

Organiser Jo Cullum said: “On our normal club nights we get a variety of performers

ranging from some wellseasoned and experienced performers as well as some who may be performing for the first time, all are welcome. We actively encourage people to come and join us even if they don’t want to perform it’s great to have an audience.”

Kingsgate Park closed temporarily after new year storm

Live music series continues with visit of The Acoustic Strawbs COTSWOLD Edge Events continue to bring live music to the area with The Acoustic Strawbs featuring in a first concert of 2018.

With hits such as Lay Down and Part of the Union, seven consecutive albums in America’s Billboard Top 200 and global sales in excess of three million albums, the Acoustic Strawbs have an impressive pedigree.

The band’s leading light Dave Cousins began his creative career by serving his apprenticeship in the world of British traditional folk.

ONE of Yate’s most popular parks had to be closed for a day after a storm brought branches crashing to the ground. Winds during the storm at the start of January reached 50mph, damaging an old tree.

Advisory group stalwart retires after building trust between Polish community and police A FORMER lecturer in economics, who fled Poland as a child when her country was invaded, has retired from a police advisory role.

Lady Danusia TrotmanDickenson gave many years of service to the South Gloucestershire Police Independent Advisory Group (IAG), through which she represented the Polish community.

Chief Inspector Mark Evans, who described her as a stalwart of the group, said: “Her involvement has made a real difference and helped to build support and trust between the community and local police.

“She has offered practical support to many people who have come into contact with police, whether as victims, witnesses or offenders, as well as acting as a critical friend to officers, helping us to better

She said: “I volunteered as an interpreter for the Polish community and found many were mistrustful of the police.

“It was great to be able to help build trust between the police and the community. I have very much enjoyed working with the local officers.”

The IAG volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and advise officers on policing issues which may be of concern to local communities.

HOUSEHOLDERS in South Gloucestershire have started to receive smaller wheelie bins as part of efforts to boost the amount of waste being recycled.

It will take about three months for all 106,000 black bins to be delivered to residents and their old ones removed.

South Gloucestershire Council hopes that having smaller 140-litre bins for non-recyclable rubbish will then encourage families to put waste that can be recycled into the correct containers.

It is estimated that about half of the household waste currently put into the old 240-litre black wheelie bins could in fact be recycled.

The introduction of the smaller bins comes after the launch of weekly kerbside recycling collections last June, together with a simpler sorting system.

That action has led to smaller amounts of recyclable material being stored by householders between collections and the cost of the disposal of black bin waste being reduced.

The council said since June, an extra 1,300 tonnes of recycling had been collected - a 14 per cent increase - but the amount of waste going into the black bins could be reduced even more.

Heather Goddard, the Cabinet member for communities, said: “People have already risen to the challenge since the weekly kerbside recycling collections began.

“This will reduce the amount of recyclable waste ending up in the black bins and help the council achieve its ambitious recycling target of 60 per cent by 2020.

“Waste that cannot be recycled is disposed of either as energy from waste or into landfill. The council has to pay at least £101 to dispose of every tonne of black bin waste in this way, which soon adds up.”

During the exchange of bins, an average of 2,000 new ones will be delivered each day, with the old ones being recycled at no extra cost to make new bins and other hard plastic containers.

Meningitis B vaccination IS IT necessary for me or my child to have this? Does my child need both the MEN ACWY and MEN B Vaccine? Are there any side effects in having this vaccine and are they costly?

Following recent cases and a death last year, these are some of the common questions we have been answering due to increased concern for young people in the Bristol area.

Meningococcal group B bacteria are responsible for 90% of meningococcal infections in young children. It can be the cause of life threatening infections, including meningitis and blood poisoning.

This bacteria can spread to people through prolonged close contact. Meningitis can affect all ages but it’s more common in babies and young children. The next most vulnerable groups are teenagers and young adults due to increased social mixing at these ages.

Meningococcal infections tend to come in bursts. In the past 20 years, between 500 and 1,700 people every year have suffered from Men B disease, with around 1 in 10 dying from the infection.

Many of those who survive suffer terrible permanent disability, such as amputation, brain damage and epilepsy.

All teenagers at secondary school are now vaccinated against the Meningitis ACWY strain. This is different to the Meningitis B. The NHS does not routinely offer the Meningitis B vaccine except when reported cases are rising.

However, due to recent cases and fatality among young people (including in Bristol), there has been a massive campaign to raise funds and awareness of this condition.

The pharmacist at Abbotswood have responded by undertaking training and now provide the Men B vaccination privately. A lot of parents have approached us to help set up a service like this. Our team will also be very happy to provide you with advice and help you with any queries you have.

Yate Shopping Centre attracted more shoppers last year despite drop in festive visitors FOOTFALL at Yate Shopping Centre increased overall in 2017, despite fewer shoppers going to the precinct in the run-up to Christmas.

Numbers for the whole year went up by 0.8 per cent compared to 2016 but dropped by five per cent in the four weeks leading to Christmas, in line with the national trend for the festive period which reflected uncertainty in the retail sector and pressures on consumer spending.

During those four weeks,

1.16 million shoppers visited the centre compared with 1.22 million a year previously.

The centre said visitors were affected by the pre-Christmas cold spell, the growth in on-line shopping, uncertainty over Brexit and the economy and pressures on disposable incomes.

Centre manager Andy Lowrey said: “Whereas the numbers are lower than last year, Yate has held up well against strong competition from other local centres.

“The retail market is extremely volatile. However, Yate has seen several new and

prominent store openings in 2017 and now has only six vacant units out of 120, well below the national average.

“Although Christmas trading has been difficult, Yate Shopping Centre is in its best position for more than ten years.”

Rate relief scheme AN estimated 100 small and medium-sized businesses in South Gloucestershire could be eligible for rate relief for the coming financial year.

Those which might benefit from Governmentallocated funding are being contacted by South Gloucestershire Council, which will administer the scheme over the next four years, to apply for the support.

Small and medium companies make up the majority of businesses in the area and the aim of the discretionary relief scheme is to help them adjust to and absorb increases to the rates.

South Gloucestershire will receive £752,000 of funding over the fouryear period and it hopes that £438,000 will be distributed in the first year.

Chapels and their congregations AN exhibition on the history of non-conformist chapels and chapelgoers is being planned for the centre.

Non-conformism was a success story from the 17th century.

Major denominations, notably Methodism and the Baptists often had more converts than their Anglican counterparts, especially in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

The Bristol area was particularly blessed with chapels, with buildings such as the Whitfield Tabernacle in Kingswood, where John Wesley preached on numerous occasions, and the Zion Chapel in Winterbourne, which retains much of its early 18th century features.

Chapel Society It was a chapel society, borne out by the numbers of chapels evident in nearly every community in the area.

Tiny settlements such as Latteridge and Yate Rocks all managed one chapel and mining

between themselves in the 1940s and 1950s. However, socialising with any Church of England organisations, or the Catholic Church, was inconceivable in this period.

Chapels had a huge influence over the lives of local people and reflected a very different society we hope to bring to life in this exhibition.

Yate Chapel 1912 areas were particularly well blessed with them.

Frampton Cotterell alone could boast half a dozen non-conformist chapels in the late 19th century, including a Salvation Army chapel and two types of Methodist chapel, when the village’s population was less than a third of what it is today.

Following three chapel closures in 1967-68, the former chapels were amalgamated into the Zion Chapel, which still continues today.

I HAVE been riding motorcycles now for over twentyfive years and over that time I have amassed a fair number of miles joyfully riding up and down the country. So, I suppose it was inevitable that sooner or later I would get a puncture.

The other evening that possibility became a reality and, typically, at the most unfortunate of moments.

Firstly, I was in the outside lane of the M4 heading eastbound and just coming up to the Severn Bridge.

Secondly, it was during the Friday evening rush hour and thirdly, it was getting dark and cold. Not the best mix for a puncture I’m sure you will agree.

The adrenaline kicked in and I managed to safely negotiate the three lanes, the bike feeling like it wanted to buck me off all the way, and stopped rather ungracefully on the hard shoulder.

During those few moments of terror I had a real sense that someone, God that is, was watching out for me. But, now what to do? I have to confess that in that moment, with the light fading and a myriad of cars and lorries rushing by me at high speed, I felt more than a little bit vulnerable. The bank next to the hard shoulder was steep and full of brambles so I literally had nowhere safe to go.

I rang my breakdown service to seek help but, due to the weather and time of day, they would be unable to provide any assistance for quite some time. So, you can add ‘helpless’ to that feeling of vulnerability and by now it really was dark and cold. I was desperately in need of rescue.

But then I remembered a good friend of mine who had a van. I rang him and, in a true moment of sacrificial friendship, he literally dropped everything

and came out and rescued me. After we had precariously manhandled the bike into the back of his van, which is a story for another time, and got underway, I was struck by how my little ‘adventure’ in some small way parallels the main message of The Bible.

That in our darkest and most vulnerable of moments God has provided for us a rescue in the person of Jesus Christ. Who, in a true moment of sacrificial friendship, has come into our darkness to show us the way home. Acts 4:12 says ‘There is rescue in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we can be saved.’

A ROGUE trader who defrauded a Chipping Sodbury pensioner out of thousands back in 2016 was finally jailed for 27 months in December.

The man was charged with five counts of fraud by false representation after persuading the 75-year-old his home needed repairs. He failed to appear in court and was finally brought to justice through a European arrest warrant.

If you have elderly, vulnerable family, friends or neighbours please help them with their home and garden maintenance to prevent them from falling victim to this sort of offence.

You should be given a cooling-off period by anyone offering to do work on your home – otherwise they’re committing a Trading Standards offence. If

n CAR TALK: VOLVO S90 Review by Richard Drew T’S funny how you don’t realise you need technology until it’s handed to you on a plate.

Back in the day, a visit to my grandmother would often see her bustling around her modest kitchen. There were certainly not many mod cons - no microwave, no gas hob and certainly no dishwasher (that was my job).

Monday’s washing morning was aided by the use of a Flatley to dry clothes. Those of a certain age will remember this relic of the 20th Century, a drying rack in a white metal box. It was needed because there was no central heating, and therefore no radiators to drape your clothes on. There was certainly no tumble dryer.

It was the same with cars. I bought my first car from my grandmother for the princely sum of £68. It was a Vauxhall Viva. The nearest I came to a mod-con was a radio I put in and which had a habit of re-tuning itself to Welsh radio stations.

Thing was, as a 17 year-old, I was just delighted to have a car.

If it started in the morning I was happy. Pimping my ride wasn’t in the budget.

Nowadays I drive an old 4x4 most days. It’s certainly a quantum leap from my first car and very reliable but certainly not packed full of features. I’m still not that bothered about having a car crammed with features - at least I wasn’t until Volvo gave me the S90 to try.

Who knew you needed a heated steering wheel? It was blissful on a frosty winter morning.

You fear for the manufacturers of driving gloves. If you are a bit nervous about reversing, there’s not just a reversing camera, you can have a 360 degree experience, where you look down on the car like an out of body experience.

In this era when all the buzz is about driverless cars, Volvo tries to take as much of the work out of driving so you can concentrate on getting from A to B with ease. Pilot Assist has a bag of tricks, including automatic acceleration, braking and steering as well as helping to deal with the drudgery of stop

start traffic. Lane assist, three drive modes and a heads up display all helps too.

Then there’s the crowning glory of this car, the 9 inch iPad like touch screen display. Unlike many other luxury cars, it’s moulded into the dashboard with elegance and ambition. It seems to control almost everything, and does it with the the intuitive ease of an iPad. Indeed there is the option to link your Apple device to the system.

Alongside a top class sound system and a well appointed interior, this is a car to savour. It’s built on the same platform as the XC90 SUV, and the similarities are striking. The inside looks identical and although the drive height is much lower it still feels very large when you are inching your way through the maze of narrow lanes in places like Frampton Cotterell, with proximity alarms sounding.

Although it has a familiar feel to the XC90 inside, it looks very different on the outside. This saloon has an attractive, aggressive front. The back end is a bit of a throwback to the 60s in my opinion, and it took me a while to come to love it.

But this car overall is easy to love. The automatic drive is smooth with bags of power from

the quiet diesel engine, and the engineers have succeeded in making it an easy and enjoyable experience. You might argue the lion’s share of the gadgets on offer can be found on other makes of car, but the price you pay for this Volvo belies its premium nature.

The S90 starts at £34,465, with impressive personal contract offers.

Perhaps there is something to say after all for cars full of features.

It certainly makes life on the road a whole lot smoother. And if I fancy a trip back in time, I can always fire up my 1984 camper van.

n AROUND THE W.I Chipping Sodbury (Morning) WI The January sun was shining as the ladies of Chipping Sodbury Morning WI met to celebrate their 25th Birthday.

It was sunny and cold outside but there was lots of laughter, fun and warmth inside the Old Grammar School as we all took our seats to consider outstanding business.

We all admired the fantastic 25th birthday cake that had been made and iced by two of our members. Two ladies who had attended our inaugural meeting cut the cake and it was served up with our morning coffee.

Following a particularly joyous coffee break we all

assembled again to listen to Susan Marshfield talk about ‘The Lighter Side of Life’. This was an enchanting presentation just right for a birthday celebration, full of delightfully funny and sometimes a bit risqué tales that kept us laughing throughout.

Two new members had joined us during the morning and they both said what a really lovely time they had and how friendly everyone was. What a compliment to be proud of.

The next meeting is on 20 February 2018 at 10.00 am at the Old Grammar School.

Grants totalling £13,000 allocated to two local churches by trust CHURCHES in Tormarton and Badminton have received grants to help keep them in a good state of repair.

St Michael and All Angels in Badminton has been given £6,000 for stonework repairs, while St Mary Magdalene in Tormarton was granted £7,000 towards the re-ordering of the south aisle and other work.

The money was part of the latest round of grant approvals, which totalled £80,000, sanctioned by the Gloucestershire Historic

Churches Trust.

Any place of Christian worship within South Gloucestershire, north Bristol and Gloucestershire can apply to the trust for support .

Its chairman, Nick Talbot Rice, said: “Maintaining these buildings, which are such an integral part of our visual and historic landscape, is usually very expensive and this often presents a major challenge for congregations. The trust is pleased to be able to support churches with their fundraising.”

n ADVERTISING FEATURE

Time to retune your digital boxes MANY television viewers in the Yate and Chipping Sodbury area will need to retune their digital boxes at the end of the month.

Work is being carried out on the Mendip transmitter, which serves the whole of Bristol, resulting in changes to some Freeview channels.

Three dates have been set aside for the work, which is required by the watchdog Ofcom to allow changes in bandwidth for future mobile services.

The main date for this area is February 27. The others are February 7 and March 1.

Richard McKenzie, operations manager for The Aerial Man (Dan Grace) said: “We cannot predict what the fallout of this work will be but we can say most Freeview users will have to retune, some may have to re-position their aerial and an unfortunate few may have to have their aerials replaced.

“Naturally we are here to help with any issues people may have and we hope to have caught up with the current backlog of work to wind-damaged aerials so should be able to respond to people’s needs very quickly.”

Further changes may be made to the transmitter late next year.

A good night promised Stroke charity sets higher by theatre group fund raising target THE Court Players are heading back to the war for their next production.

Goodnight Mister Tom, a play by David Wood from the novel by Michelle Magorian, is on at The Memorial Hall, Rangeworthy on from14 to 17 February at 7.30pm.

The play is set during the the Second World War, Goodnight Mister Tom follows William Beech, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside and builds a remarkable and moving friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley. All seems perfect until William is devastatingly summoned by his mother back to London.

A LACK of funds means a charity is only helping one in five people in South Gloucestershire and Bristol who have suffered a stroke.

It has now launched a bid to raise £300,000 - an extra £100,000 on top of its original target - to make a difference to the lives of a potential 350 local people.

Formerly known as the Bristol Area Stroke Foundation, the 35-year-old charity is now known as Bristol After Stroke.

Its chief executive, Rebecca Sheehy, said: “We’re there when a person comes out of hospital to advise, encourage and support them as they fight their way back towards living a fulfilling life.

“Because we rely on so many volunteers, many of whom have survived a stroke, every pound we raise goes a very long way.

“We want more people to know about stroke and how to deal with it if it happens.

While it affects so many people’s lives, there are so many misconceptions about it, not least that getting the right help at the right time can significantly improve recovery.”

One man who supports the charity is Eddie Ruskin, 48, of Yate, who had two strokes and a brain haemorrhage in 2014.

Despite an initial poor prognosis, his determination resulted in him working and driving again, even qualifying as an advanced driver with the Institute of Advanced Motoring.

Recently he completed a gruelling long distance drive from Land’s End to John O’ Groats in just one day to raise funds for the charity.

Local show chooses High demand for foodbanks from people new charity in crisis continues to rise THE South Gloucestershire Show has announced it will support the Jessie May charity at its event this summer. The Bristol based charity provides at home care for children with life limiting conditions.

Jessie May takes over from the Meningitis Now charity, which raised £13,000 at the August show over the last two

years.

Julian Withers from Jessie May said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with the South Gloucestershire Show this year. JWe are now caring for over 170 families around the immediate area. The money and awareness raised about the work we do will be phenomenal.”

TEAMS running foodbanks in Thornbury and Yate said demand for their services exceeded their worst forecast through December.

While expecting to be busy, the requests for help were even higher than anticipated.

The Thornbury foodbank in the town’s Baptist church is a branch of the Yate and Chipping Sodbury foodbank - and part of the Trussell Trust's UK-wide network.

Robert Vernon, who heads up the Yate centre in Station Road, said December was busy at all three centres - there is also a branch in Mangotsfield - but the volunteers did their best to help people and would at least have food for the Christmas period.

He said: “On the upside, the generosity of people in supplying us with Christmas goodies in addition to our usual items was overwhelming.

“We received so many thanks from donors for the work we do.

As a result, we were well able to cope with the demand in our usual generous manner.”

He said through 2017, food and other items were supplied to 2,534 people - a 12 per cent rise on 2016.

That equated to more than 25 tonnes in the food parcels but donations of 24.6 tonnes were received.

He said: “Sadly, we do not expect demand to reduce this coming year. As a result, we will need help and support to keep the warehouse stocked.”

Foodbanks provide emergency meals for three days to people in short term crisis, which can be the result of problems such as benefit delays or withdrawal, separation, unexpected bills, debt, bereavement or redundancy.

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style A look at everyday cars on the cusp of becoming modern classics Peugeot 406 V6, 1997 - 2003: Six of the best THIS month’s article is as much a paean to an engine as it is to a car.

After Peugeot dropped the wholly underwhelming “PRV V6” (Peugeot Renault Volvo) motor, they still needed a large capacity six cylinder engine. The PRV had found its way into a staggering variety of utter sheds in the 70s and 80s, including the infamous DeLorean DMC-12, and the firm were keen to put this underpowered and thirsty problem child behind them. What they developed was an efficient, lightweight and smooth V6 that was placed into one of the best looking cars ever made – the Peugeot 406 Coupe.

It’s a bit rich of me to suggest the V6 coupe as a modern classic that won’t lose you money – they are already borderline worthless.

And try finding one, because I couldn’t. Instead I drove the considerably rarer V6 saloon, which does at least have total anonymity on its side. The Coupe, a Pininfarina-penned symphony in steel, has simply disappeared from our streets, and I can only assume badge snobbery and the rather down-market association with mundane 406 rep-mobiles has done for it. Once a car sinks below £2k in value, MOTs hoover them up and spit them out into the scrapyard. So why should you care, and why should you buy one today on sight?

I could write about the looks

all day, but instead know this: The 406 and the gorgeous Ferrari 456 were designed at the same time by the same man. And I prefer the Peugeot. Actually I think this was the last beautiful car the firm made, and therefore the last truly desirable car they made as well – modern Peugeots are dreary, overweight, underpowered and totally forgettable. How the mighty have fallen. Inside things aren’t so great; think turn of the century midmarket mass produced plastics and leather. It is simple though, which means less to go wrong in theory.

Behind the wheel the V6 never feels heavy (because it isn’t), and has that lovely AutoRoute ride that Peugeot have completely forgotten how to deliver. Soft yet

warning, and exhausts were made of very mild steel.

If I could find an ordinary Coupe in the right colour, I’d buy one just to sit and look at it. It’ll probably be cheaper than a TV after all. But if I could find a V6 Coupe with low miles and a manual gearbox, I’d drive it every day. And maybe in ten years everyone else will have woken up to what a fabulous car it really is.

obedient, sharp in corners but with suspension that is never crashy and all the while you’re pulled along by that silky, slightly rorty V6 that will sit comfortably at 110mph all day (in Germany, of course) and still hand you 30mpg. The engine delivers 210bhp and was tuned by no less than Porsche. The five speed gearbox is a bit long in the throw, the seats could do with more shoulder bolstering and headroom in the back of the Coupe is marginal. But for this money, and with this style, you shouldn’t care.

What goes wrong? Well at this age, almost anything could let go.

That said, the 406 was a genuinely well-made car, and the engine in particular is very strong. Cambelts need changing every 70k miles, electrics can go west without much

Boundary changes set for 2019 council elections FINAL recommendations have been made for new electoral arrangements for South Gloucestershire Council, which involve cutting the number of councillors by nine.

The recommendations have been published by the independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England after public consultation on draft proposals last year.

As well as proposing a total of 61 councillors in future, the commission has also drawn new boundaries for each council ward.

Professor Colin Mellors, chairman of the commission, said: “We are extremely grateful to people across South Gloucestershire who took part in the review. The commission has looked at all the evidence that was put forward during the consultation.”

He said the recommendations provided electoral fairness for voters and reflected community ties throughout the district.

In response to local feedback during consultation,

the commission changed some of the recommendations it published in August 2017.

It also took on board evidence regarding the Chipping Sodbury area after local people objected to a proposal to divide the town from its surrounding communities and establish both a Chipping Sodbury and a Sodbury Vale ward.

The commission now proposes that the whole area should be represented by a single Chipping Sodbury and Cotswold Edge ward that will be represented by two councillors and also take in Wickwar.

Meanwhile, most of Yate will be covered by Yate North and Yate Central wards, while the Dodington ward will cover Shire Way and Rodford Way, the Birds estate and the area of Yate around Abbotswood.

The proposed new arrangements must now be implemented by Parliament, with a draft order providing for the new electoral arrangements to come into force at the 2019 council elections.

n NEWS FROM STROUD AUCTION ROOMS STROUD Auction Rooms has a reputation for having bumper sales during the months other salerooms find difficult. Many no longer hold an August sale, citing summer holidays as a draw-back, and January is also claimed to be a "sluggish" month.

But Stroud Auctions bucked the trend with its first sale of 2018.

The January sale saw 1,814 lots sold over two days - a mammoth task in itself. But with the saleroom full of enthusiastic buyers, numerous telephone and commission bidders and well over 1,200 online bidders, it was a particularly busy couple of days.

Pictures were much soughtafter this month, top selling lot was an 1871 oil on canvas by Sidney Richard Percy of cattle beside a loch selling for £15,000 The ephemera section continues to attract more interest year on year, it includes postcards, autographs, signed letters, printed advertising items, signed sporting and other memorabilia. The autographs once again caused a huge amount of interest with a mid1960s album including all the members of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, plus many others such as Dusty Springfield, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Adam Faith, selling for £3,800.

Book lovers were drawn by a 1617 King James Bible "newly translated out of the original tongues and with former translations diligently compared and revised by His Magesties special commandment", which eventually sold for £2,200.The vendor was given the bible some 40 or 50 years ago and plans to donate the proceeds to charity.

Stamp expert David Lord was especially pleased with the £900 achieved by two albums of all-world stamps, which included

a good range of Victoria issues but with all the stamps glued to the album pages.

"I feared the glue may have put collectors off," he said afterwards, "but it obviously didn't!"

The next sale at Stroud Auctions will be on February 7 and 8 when the specialist sections will include guns and weapons, medals and militaria, sporting, taxidermy, toys, musical instruments and vinyl records.

THE year 2018 continues to bring improvements to our local community, with a huge package of investments recently unveiled for Yate and Sodbury. Along with local Yate residents, we have successfully pressed the Council to invest in our valued parks, play areas and open spaces across Yate and Sodbury. A huge injection of cash is planned, with £570,000 in investments for our local areas.

Yate parks will soon get an upgrade, with Lilliput Park set to see the arrival of new exercise equipment and an outdoor gym, all part of a £55,000 investment.

Funding of £73,000 has also been earmarked for Kingsgate Park, which will soon benefit from new outdoor gym and exercise equipment, all aimed at giving young people across the Yate area better opportunities to exercise.

£49,000 worth of improvements to its playground with better seating and play units. The Abbotswood Play Area and the Woodchester Play Area are also set to be expanded after receiving £89,535 and £29,000 respectively, which will go towards improvements to the play equipment and be a welcoming place for local families to spend time together.

These investments follow other major investment at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex and the new swimming pool at Yate Leisure Centre, which have both been refurbished and upgraded for our local sports groups. Yate and Sodbury residents will also soon benefit from brand new lighting at the Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club, and upgrades to the Brimsham School’s outdoor netball and tennis courts, which have been granted £74,000 for resurfacing works

which will allow all year round use.

As your local MP I am proud of the great investments coming to our towns and I will continue to push for future improvements to our parks, sports facilities and play areas to provide even more opportunities for fellow local residents.

As a Yate resident and local father I know how important our local parks and family-friendly play facilities are for our community, and I am genuinely pleased that we have been able to secure such a big investment for our open spaces.

Our green spaces are absolutely vital to local residents wishing to exercise and families, like mine, able to enjoy the outdoors together in our great local parks.

Britain used to be famous for its puddings from silky syllabubs in Summer to comforting steamed puddings in Winter. Prince Albert, Victoria’s husband, was particularly fond of our puddings and there were even a few concocted in honour of the royal couple like Windsor Pudding or Empress Pudding. Sadly, these traditional puddings have fallen out of favour, but I think they deserve to be enjoyed again. So, let’s get steaming.

Lush Ginger and Pear Steamed Pudding Ingredients: Bottom layer: 3 tbsps golden syrup 1 tbsp syrup from a jar of preserved ginger 3 pears, thinly sliced from top to bottom For the sponge: 175g/6oz caster sugar 175g/6oz softened butter, plus extra for greasing 3 free-range eggs 175g/6oz self-raising flour Generous shake each of powdered ginger, mace and cinnamon 3-4 pieces of stem ginger from the jar – finely chopped To serve: 300ml Pouring cream

1 tbsp of ginger wine or maple syrup Here’s what you do: 1. Grease a 1kg/2lb 4oz rectangular loaf tin with butter.

2. Pour the golden syrup into the tin and stir in 1 tbsp of the ginger syrup, then arrange half the pear slices neatly on top of the syrup in a single layer.

3. Beat all the sponge ingredients, apart from the pieces of ginger, together until well-combined.

Then fold in the pieces of ginger, finely chopped.

4. Spoon half the sponge mixture on top of the pears and level the top.

5. Arrange the rest of the pears over the sponge. Cover with the remaining sponge mixture and then level the top again.

6. Cut a large rectangle of greaseproof paper and place it on top of the pudding. Fold a rectangle of aluminium foil in half to form a double layer, then crimp that around the top of the tin and secure with cook's string.

7. Place the tin into a large saucepan and add enough water to reach halfway up the sides of the tin.

8. Cover the pan with a lid, bring the water to the boil, then reduce the heat until simmering.

Steam the sponge pudding for 1½ hours, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the sponge comes out clean. Check the water level halfway through cooking as you don’t want it to boil dry.

9. When cooked remove the foil and greaseproof paper. Run a palate knife around the inside of the tin. Turn the tin over onto the serving plate. Leave for a couple of minutes, then lift off the tin.

10. Slice the sponge neatly onto individual plates. Serve the pudding with pouring cream, to which a tablespoon of ginger wine or maple syrup has been added. Homemade custard works a treat too!

New Thornbury Jazz Festival selling tickets for debut event TICKETS have gone on sale for the new jazz festival to be hosted in Thornbury in early March.

The programme for the event has been finalised, with performances in a cafe setting in the Armstrong Hall running from early evening through to a late night session.

Now jazz enthusiasts can get their tickets either by calling into the town hall in High Street or phoning the box office on 01454 412272.

Organisers have pledged concerts of varied jazz to appeal to a wide range of musical tastes at the inaugural festival on Saturday, March 10.

Thornbury Swing Band will open the evening at 6pm with a line-up featuring saxophones, trombones, trumpets and vocalists, all supported by a rhythm section of bass, guitar, keyboard and drums.

It will be followed by the Bristol-based Mark Randall Six before singer Jessica Radcliffe returns to the town, in company with the Park Row Five, to perform a selection of original arrangements of a wide range of jazz classics, blues and ballads.

The Class Act Trio, led by John Huggins,

will bring the festival to a close.

Tickets range from £6 for the swing band concert alone to £18 for the whole event and hot food will be available for £5 throughout the evening. A bar will also be open.

The festival is part of the phase one fund raising efforts to improve the Armstrong Hall.

Call to arms - laser run training the target in Yate AFTER the success of the first national laser run championships at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex in August, moves are being made to set up regular training camps at the centre.

Laser Run is the final element of Modern Pentathlon, which is

part of the Olympics. It involves running and shooting at targets and has now been created as a new competition by the governing body.

Phillip Hobbs is the laser run coach for PentathlonGB, he is raising funds to provide a laser

kit for the South Gloucestershire area.

It will be used for training and taster sessions not only at the Outdoor Sports Complex but at other community organisations.

n SPORT Barton Hill 20 – 12 Chipping Sodbury Sodbury knew that the toss would be as crucial as it is in Test cricket as Barts love to play down their hill in the second half. The early exchanges were fairly equal and both teams were affected by the pudding of a pitch.

Barts nailed the opening points when they secured a lineout from a penalty. Their organised drive from 10m was only slowed, and not stopped.

Sodbury scored after the ball was spat out from a ruck, the backs exploiting the blindside with Jack Skelton diving in to score. Cook converted from the touchline. Barts’ kicker had a much easier penalty kick minutes later from 35m, which saw the hosts retake the lead.

In the second half, Barts were awarded an early penalty, which they kicked for a lineout 15m away from the Sodbury tryline and then crashed over from close range to take the lead.

Barts’ repeated narrow but muscular attack forced a 5m scrum from the visitors from which they went over to secure the win.

Trio of runners looking to shine in the new season A TRIO of athletes with disabilities who train at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex are looking to excel in 2018. All three are trained by the same coach, Mark Lodge, who runs Lodge Sports Athletics Club.

Tom Stamp a T35 sprinter has Cerebral Palsy and travels from Swindon to train with Mark. Tom has been selected to represent England at the CP World Games in Spain in August in the 100m and 200m Sprints.

Beth Tucker, a T36 sprinter who also has Cerebral Palsy, is a local athlete and has been coached by Mark for 3 years. She travels to Dubai in March with the team to run in the 100m and 200m.

Nils Rehm a T47 Sprinter is another local athlete who is less than 1 second off being ranked as one of the world’s top 6 fastest 200m athletes in his classification.

Yate Town Council who are in the process of replacing the track at YOSC, are encouraging more people with disabilities to use the facility.

Mark said, “I am here to support any athlete with a disability that wants to work hard to reach a goal”.

Sodbury get into gear after sluggish start Chipping Sodbury 50 – 20 St. Mary’s SODBURY were rather sluggish during the opening encounters of this match and were forced to play in their own half as St Mary’s contested every breakdown with gusto. The visitor’s determination combined with a surprising lack of precision from the home side led to Sodbury finding themselves behind from a well-struck penalty.

It was 20 minutes before Sodbury stepped into the visitors’ 22, an incursion made

by Dan Bradley who broke the line deep in his own half. There was no score and a knock-on handed St Mary’s a scrum from which they regained possession and kicked long, missing touch but finding full-back Jack Skelton.

Skelton burst forward and the move finally founfTom Farthing, who blitzed the defence and touched down Sodbury’s first try,

which Jon Cook converted.

Just minutes later it was Cook himself who stepped off his right foot with a burst of speed that carried him unmolested to the try-line. He converted his own score.

Sodbury failed to deal with the restart and St Mary’s scored wide on the left. Just 5 minutes later the Sods were trailing 14-15 when their defence turned porous once more. The visitors made easy progress from a 10m scrum to score wide on the right.

When St Mary’s were penalised for kicking the ball on the edge of their 22, fastthinking scrum-half Tom Head tapped and flitted forward, tackled by a player who wasn’t back 10 metres. Sodbury opted for a scrum in the shadow of the posts. Head picked up the ball and found Bradley who came from deep on an undeviating line which took him past theSt Mary’s defence. Cook converted.

Sodbury roared back into the visitors’ half, and Horton took a pass from Bradley at the back of a lineout before weaving a meandering path to the tryline, beating 5 men on his way to scoring his second. Skelton improved it.

Yate’s hot streak continues in 2018 THE late postponement of their New Years Day fixture against Larkhall Athletic due to a waterlogged pitch left Yate Town a little disappointed after they had enjoyed successive 3-1 wins over Kidlington and local rivals Mangotsfield.

Yate visited Cinderford Town for their first match in 2018 and returned from the Forest with a rare, hard earned point on a very heavy pitch that cut up badly as the match progressed.

The poor conditions resulted in a scrappy game with the home team enjoying more of the play without creating any clear-cut chances. Yate’s best opportunity came in the closing stages when Kyle Tooze failed to hit the target and it was no surprise that the match ended goal-less.

Yate travelled to North Leigh for their next encounter, another venue where points have been difficult to come by. After a goal less first half Town gave a scintillating display after the

Fifth placed Wimborne Town then visited Lodge Road, and Yate continued their excellent run with a 2-0 win after a very entertaining match. The first half proved an even contest, shaded by Wimborne but with neither side able to capitalise on a number of half-chances. Yate stepped up a gear and dominated the second half to extend their unbeaten run to six matches.

Happy new year for footballers FOLLOWING a mid season dip in form Chipping Sodbury Town FC were not looking forward to some tough fixtures. However it appears that the Festive period has had no ill effects on the team who now sit in 10th place in the Toolstation Western Football League.

A fine 2-0 home win against mid table but in form Bitton set the tone for some fine results over the Christmas period. Second half goals from Jake Thomas and Justin Bishop gave the home side a deserved 3 points.

Fourth place Melksham Town hosted the Sods in the last game of 2017 and the away side came away with an unexpected victory. The only goal of the game scored by Alexander Cunningham a minute after half time.

A narrow 1-0 loss at Bitton in the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy in their next game did nothing to dampen the spirits and another away fixture against Odd Down (Bath) resulted in a win for Sodbury. Kye Simpson had put the home side a goal up after just 2 minutes but Sodbury’s George Box equalised on 15 minutes to leave the sides level at the break. Liam Pullen gave the visitors a 2-1 lead 20 minutes into the second half and Jake Thomas settled the tie on 85 minutes.

Hockey Club hopes for supermarket windfall YATE Hockey Club is bidding to win a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

The scheme sees grants of up to £4,000 awarded to local community projects with customers voting until the end of February.

Yate Hockey Club is one of the groups on the shortlist for the

Yate stores which cover Yate Tesco Extra, Brimsham Park Tesco Express and Station Road Tesco Express.

The club have applied for funding to purchase new goalie kits and training equipment. In recent years the junior section of the hockey club has seen a huge increase in numbers and

needs to provide safe equipment for training and hockey games.

It has also been running ‘Back to Hockey’ sessions which invites people with little or no experience of hockey to come along and give it a go.
