New sports centre for Sodbury SPORTS groups are being asked to have their say over plans to build a new sports centre for Chipping Sodbury.

The owner of the Ridings, Chipping Sodbury Town Trust has announced it wants to sell 13.5 acres of the 200 acre site for housing.

Income would be used to fund the building of a new centre for community and sports activities.

The Trust says the area is a currently-unused plot of land behind the existing sporting grounds – about half of an area known as Stub Ridings.

It says the proposal is being discussed in conjunction with Chipping Sodbury Football Club, Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club, St Nicholas Football Club and groups within the Ridings Sports Association. ORDER Turn to page 2

A trust spokesperson said: "The Ridings is a much-loved and well-used part of our community. We want to make sure we can continue to provide good recreational space and facilities at The Ridings for generations to come.

"The existing sports facilities are leaky, old and cold, so we want to upgrade these for local sports clubs and create a new space for the local community where people can come together for classes, clubs and gatherings.

"We can support this ambition by releasing some land at the top end of the Ridings for new homes.

"We’ve carefully considered exactly where new homes could go so that The Ridings continues to be a hive of sporting and outdoor activities."

The trust says it is working closely with users to understand their requirements and ambitions for improved facilities and pitches, as well as a new community hub.

It is also talking to developers about the potential for new homes that are in keeping with the local area and community.

The spokesperson added: "As plans for new homes and the community hub are developed

over the coming months, people in Chipping Sodbury and Yate will have the chance to share their feedback and ideas for The Ridings."

Local residents, community groups and businesses will be invited to have their say on plans early next year, before a planning application for new homes or the new community hub is submitted to South Gloucestershire Council.

The trust spokesperson said: “As plans for new homes and the community hub are developed over the coming months, people in Chipping Sodbury and Yate will have the chance to share their feedback and ideas for The Ridings.

"The new Centre will provide a health and well-being activity centre for the community of Chipping Sodbury, and also new premises for the Chipping Sodbury Rugby Football Club, the Chipping Sodbury Town Football Club and the St Nicholas Football Club.”

Community groups or organisations who think they may benefit from a new community hub are invited to contact the Chipping Sodbury Town Trust, be kept up to date as plans progress and invited to contribute to the proposals.

Josie's in the jungle!

YATE TV presenter Josie Gibson has flown into Australia to take part in hit ITV series I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!

And the former Brimsham Green School pupil, who first rose to fame in the 2010 series of Big Brother, immediately became one of the bookies' favourites to win the show.

Josie, a presenter on ITV's This Morning, started by being taken to the outback with politician Nigel Farage and when the former UKIP leader said he thought the coming series wouldn't be easy, she quipped: "It can't be worse than Brexit!"

Speaking before the series started, Josie said she had a phobia of insects - not good news for facing one of the show's infamous 'bushtucker trials', which often involve braving creepy-crawlies to win food.

She said: "I know I have taken on challenges for This Morning in the past but I don’t know if I’ve taken on too much here.

It’s all becoming very real.

"I am dreading the insects and it’s my biggest phobia. I also don’t like spiders and I freeze normally when I see one.

"My family thinks I am mad doing the programme too as they know what I’m like with creepy crawlies!”

Josie said she expected to be the camp 'mum, adding: "I am very motherly and I also love chatting to people."

She said she would most miss blow-

drying her hair and putting a bit of make-up on.

Josie said she loves the show, which is why she decided to take the plunge and accept the offer.

She said: “I am most looking forward to being at one with nature “And I hope I learn new things about myself. I hope I can push myself more than I think I can. "Eating trials? I have got to try and close my eyes and not think about what it is I am eating. "Heights? I don’t like heights either. To be fair, I am not liking a lot of things that the jungle throws at you but I want to give it all a go."

Joking that she wants to go to the jungle camp ‘to have a little bit of a relax’, she admitted it was going to be very tough not being able to speak to her son, Reggie, and wants to make him proud. Saying she saw herself becoming the camp 'mum', she was also getting to know celebrities she wouldn’t normally meet.

Josie said: "I love it when people sit and tell stories and I hope people won’t think I am too nosey but I love chatting to them and finding out about them. I love people from all walks of life.

“I don’t think I will get too bored as if I am with lots of people, like I will be in camp, then I think we can have a laugh together.

"It’s actually going to be nice being in one spot for a change as I travel a lot.”

Greengrocer Ian shuts up shop for last time GREENGROCER Ian Veale is saying goodbye to Chipping Sodbury after 40 years in business in the town centre.

Ian's Fruit, Veg & General Supplies in Broad Street was closing for the final time on November 25, and is set to be stripped out after Christmas.

He says despite four years trying, he can’t find anyone to take on the business.

Ian, who lives in Yate, said he had decided to retire as he approaches his 70th birthday.

He said: “I’ve been in the same spot for 40 years.

"It’s been alright, I’ve made a living out of it. I supply the local pubs and have a good number of regulars.

"I planned to retire at 65, but couldn’t find anyone to take on the business.

"I have been asking around for four years but people are just not interested in taking it over. I’ll take a rest over Christmas, and if there’s still no interest I

will come back in to strip the shop down forever."

Ian said Covid had hit small shops hard.

He said: "Since then, people are getting a lot delivered now instead, and the fruit business is very quiet."

Ian worked as a baker from the age of 11, but at 30 decided to set up his own business and took over the old Crane’s greengrocers, and has been running it ever since.

He said he would not be missing the 3.30am alarm calls, to get up in time to buy fresh fruit for his shop – or the 14-hour days.

Resident Keith Evans got in touch with the Voice, and said Ian’s departure would be a great loss for the town.

Keith said: “He has been there through thick and thin, and will be sadly missed.”

One customer said she had been loyal to Ian even when the town’s Waitrose supermarket opened.

She said: "I just liked his friendly smile, and the way he made you feel welcome."

All good at The Oaks, says inspector A PRESCHOOL in Yate has been given a 'good' rating in its first ever inspection.

Ofsted visited The Oaks Preschool and Out of School Club, based at Tyndale Primary School, provided new children with thoughtful, patient support to help them settle into the pre-school.

Inspector Rachel Howell said the pre school uses a system of 'key persons' to help children form relationships with staff and this helps to foster children's confidence and well-being effectively.

Her report said: “The manager and staff think through their curriculum carefully.

“Key persons use their observations and assessments to identify any gaps in children's learning. They formulate these into plans, working together to implement these into their practice and provision.”

Staff offer timely and effective help for children who require additional support, said the inspector, adding: "Parents are full of praise for the friendly and caring staff team."

The inspector found children were curious and keen to explore, and enjoyed the sensory and creative opportunities available, and develop their dexterity and coordination well.

They praised staff for getting down to children's level using clear speech.

Older children show good skills, solving problems and discussing their plans confidently with staff.

“Staff use early signing to skilfully supplement their interactions with the younger children and children whose speech is more limited. This gets children's attention and supports their understanding and emerging communication effectively.”

The report said The Oaks has opportunities for active play, including in the garden.

Children learn about the natural world on nature walks in the local area and growing flowers in the raised beds in the pre-school garden.

The inspector said: "Children develop their independence skills and sense of responsibility very well."

The report recommended the preschool could further improving the quality of the early years provision, by extending the information gained when children first start, to get a clearer picture of children's needs and to inform planning more quickly.

Little Oaks manager Lisa Swales said her team was happy and proud of the report.

She said: "This was the first inspection since we opened in September 2021.

"As a team we have worked incredibly hard over the last two years. This has been recognised and reflected in our Ofsted report.

"It has always been our aim and intention to support and watch children grow and thrive promoting their independence.

"Together with our families we have worked to give children the skills they have needed to begin school.

"We would like to thank our amazing children and families for all their support and kindness they have shown us."

Primary praised after 'rapid improvement journey' INSPECTORS have praised a Yate primary school's inquisitive pupils, committed staff and "relevant and ambitious" curriculum.

Education regulator Ofsted rated Tyndale Primary School in Tyndale Avenue 'good' in all areas - quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision - after visiting in September.

The report, published in November, completes a turnaround in fortunes for the school, which has 166 pupils aged from four to 11 on its roll.

Five years ago Ofsted had rated the school inadequate, after a visit in which standards were found to have “declined significantly”.

That led to the then-local authority school becoming an academy and joining the Greenshaw Learning Trust, which also runs Yate Academy, the following year.

The latest inspection report said the school and the trust were committed to their mission to give "every child the best chance of success".

The inspectors said: "Tyndale Primary is a school where everyone is welcome as part of the ‘Tyndale Family’.

"Relationships between staff and pupils are strong. These are rooted in the school’s ethos, based on values that include respect and ambition.

"Staff have high expectations for all pupils. Pupils understand these and know why it is important to do their best."

The report said pupils were inquisitive and engaging, and "proud of the responsibilities they hold", including 'eco warriors' and sports ambassadors.

The inspectors said children in reception classes made a "strong start", and there was a sharp focus on reading, with a carefully planned curriculum.

They said: "The school, with support from the trust, has reviewed and developed the

curriculum so that it is relevant and ambitious.

"It focuses on the important knowledge that pupils need to learn over time."

Pupils with special educational needs or disabilities were well supported and in most subjects teachers checked what pupils knew and supported those who had fallen behind, although they said use of assessment was "not fully developed" in some subjects.

The inspectors said pupils "talk confidently about British values", linking the democratic process to voting for school

council ambassadors and had "a strong sense of justice".

They were also taught how to look after their physical and mental health, and appreciate times in the school day to "relax and reset".

To improve further, the inspectors recommended that the school develop its approach to assessment in all subjects and make some further adjustments to teaching some subjects in the foundation curriculum.

Head teacher Katie Parkhouse said: "We are delighted about this significant achievement and so very proud of the whole school community.

"The Tyndale Family are committed to continuing the trajectory of the school improvement work so that the community of Yate can be confident that Tyndale Primary provides the very best primary education provision."

Greenshaw Learning Trust chief executive Will Smith said: “Tyndale Primary School has been on a rapid improvement journey and we are delighted that this has been recognised by Ofsted.

"In particular, we welcomed the inspectors’ observations of the ambitious curriculum, the support for children with Special Educational Needs and the important focus of reading.

"The entire school community can be proud of the hard work of the children and staff at Tyndale.”

'Vast swathes' of countryside could disappear 'VAST swathes' of countryside east of the Avon Ring Road will disappear under housing in a new blueprint for 20,000 new homes, opposition councillors claim.

Conservative group leader Sam Bromiley told a South Gloucestershire Council meeting that the greenbelt next to the A4174 would be “lost pretty much entirely” and that Shortwood, between Emersons Green and Pucklechurch, could end up merging with Siston and Warmley to the south.

The council’s new 15-year Local Plan will be put out to public consultation from December 4, with detailed maps of all the sites which could potentially be used to meet the area's need for new housing and employment development.

But the Yate and Chipping Sodbury are will not see the biggest demand for new home sites.

The draft document outlining the plan was approved at a cabinet meeting on November 13.

Although it contained no maps, it included a list of possible development sites and the number of houses that could potentially be

built there, including: ● Land north of Ladden Garden Village – 162 homes ● Yate town centre – 200 homes ● Land at 404 North Road, Yate – 29 homes ● Engine Common – four sites – 90 homes ● Land at North Road, Yate – 42 homes ● Land at Dyers Lane, Iron Acton – 20 homes The council says it has to find new sites for 9,260 new homes between 2025 and 2040 to help meet a target of 20,490 homes in the district - they will be added to 8,080 which already have planning permission and 3,150 on sites for under 10 homes not included in the plan.

The authority’s Lib Dem/Labour administration defended allocating open fields for housing and insisted the impact on communities and land that currently had protected status was “unavoidable”.

Cabinet approved the document outlining where houses, jobs and infrastructure will go between 2025 and 2040, which will be sent out for public consultation next month.

Cllr Bromiley (Parkwall & Warmley) told the meeting: “The draft Local Plan proposes

thousands of new homes on greenfield land – a lot of this looks like it will be situated in the Greenbelt."

He said it was “embarrassing” to have to tell people who were “losing sleep that houses could be built or may not be built around their homes” that no maps were available yet.

Lib Dem cabinet member for planning, Chris Willmore, said: “We have taken every single brownfield site that the previous administration had identified and allocated them.

“But we’ve gone further and we’ve been hunting for more. We are reviewing all of the council’s property portfolio to see if there is any brownfield land in there.

“It’s easy to make a promise that you’re not going to touch the greenbelt until you do the sums and you discover they simply don’t add up."

Chef Kasae puts skills to ultimate test YATE chef Kasae Fraser has been wowing TV audiences with her stunning cookery on the BBC1’s flagship series MasterChef: The Professionals.

Kasae described taking part in the competition as “the most intense rollercoaster in the world”.

As the Voice went to press she was competing alongside 11 other working chefs in the knock-out week stage of the competition, hosted by Gregg Wallace, Monica Galetti and Marcus Wareing.

Earlier the 29-year-old restaurateur had been successful in the 'skills test' and 'signature menu challenge', and went on to the quarter-finals, where competitors cooked for food critics Tom Parker-Bowles, Jimi Famurewa and Grace Dent.

The series was filmed earlier this year but the outcome of each episode is kept strictly secret until it is broadcast, so Kasae was unable to tell the Voice how she got on.

The final will be televised in late December.

Kasae, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, started out as a waitress, and now runs two restaurants in Bath - seafood bar

She has travelled extensively, cooking in kitchens all over the world, and lives with boyfriend Vincent, who is also a chef.

Kasae said she started cooking after watching TV chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver.

She said: “Describing my food is really tricky. I think at 29, in an industry that is always moving so fast, it is hard for me to have my own 'style'.

“If I had to answer, I would say playful, generous, 'diet-be-damned' and refined.

"If all of those things can even exist together, that would be what I would describe as my style."

She says she entered the contest to meet like-minded people, other chefs and industry professionals.

Kasae said: "Sometimes it is so easy to get laser-focused on what you’re doing that you forget to reach out and talk to your peers, and MasterChef: The Professionals is a unique opportunity to do this with such a range of chefs.

"I want to meet the judges, hear their opinions on everything to do with cooking and restaurants.

"It is such a great challenge to be in the spotlight and see how you perform under pressure. It’s one of the greatest stresses and purest moments of professional pleasure I’ve experienced at the same time.

"Of course, I’d love to win. No one enters without the objective of winning. Even if you’re not sure it’s possible, it’s in our nature to want to succeed."

McFly to headline Yate music festival POP superstars McFly have been announced as the headliners of a music festival being held in Yate next year.

The band, who have sold more than 10 million records since bursting on to the pop scene in 2004, including seven number 1 singles, will launch the Good Times on the Pitch festival stage at Yate Town Football Club in May. Other headliners at the festival, which will run over six days from May 22-27, include Jools Holland, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Scouting for Girls.

The series of shows, leading up to the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, includes a

comedy gala featuring stand-ups Ed Byrne, Zoe Lyons, Troy Hawke and Cerys Nelmes.

All the shows take place outdoors, on a festival stage on the pitch at Yate Town FC in Lodge Road, with ticket holders invited to bring along camping chairs or picnic blankets.

Scouting for Girls' show will see them supported by Toploader and local band Mosaic.

Council wants dashcam litter footage

SOUTH Gloucestershire Council is calling for people to send dashcam, mobile phone or doorbell footage of motorists who throw litter out of cars.

Owners of vehicles involved

will face a fine of up to £100 after the council's street enforcement service was given new powers to prosecute.

The council can now use 'littering from vehicles'

regulations to carry out enforcement action against the registered keepers of cars, vans and lorries from which litter is thrown. They will be sent penalty charge notices which

carry a fine of £100, with a £50 discount if paid within the first 10 days.

The council says it will accept video evidence from the public, which can be sent via the website www.southglos.gov.uk/ reportit.

It will also accept witness accounts from police or council officers but says it won't accept reports from the public unless they are accompanied by dashcam, mobile or CCTV video, "due to the possibility of an incorrect vehicle index or a fictitious/malicious complaint".

Shoplifting doubles

SHOPLIFTING crimes in the Avon and Somerset police area have doubled over the past two years, according to the latest data.

Almost 14,000 cases were reported in South Gloucestershire, Bristol, B&NES, North Somerset and Somerset last month.

The force is now trialling new ways of making reporting crime easier for shop workers, amid rising rates across the country.

The force recorded 13,880 shoplifting crimes in October, compared with 6,720 in October 2021.

Chief constable Sarah Crew was grilled about what her force is doing to tackle the growing issue during a performance and accountability board on November 14.

Mark Shelford, the police and crime commissioner, said: “The public feel that shoplifting is not taken seriously by the police, as do some people in the retail trade.

Even though some instances of shoplifting might be of low value, the cumulative effect is significant."

Ms Crew said: “We’re currently trialling an innovative QR code reporting system, that enables instant easier access for staff in retail premises to access our reporting systems much more efficiently. We’ve trialled that in Bristol and it’s been successful, and we’re rolling it out to Bath now and then across the area."

Machete robber jailed

A YATE man who carried out two robberies in a day has been given a five-year jail sentence.

Jack Walker, aged 22, was initially told to serve 20 months after admitting two counts of robbery and one of possession of a bladed article in a public place.

But his sentence was increased after Avon & Somerset Police and the Crown Prosecution Service decided to appeal the sentences on the grounds they were unduly lenient.

Walker and two other men Abdifatah Sharif, 28, and Billy Madden, 33, entered a takeaway in Stokes Croft, Bristol, on February 18.

Walker, who was carrying a large machete, threatened one of the customers, who was also punched before the trio made off with his victim's bag, which contained approximately £3,000 in cash, 400 euros, a silver ring and sunglasses.

Later that day Walker attacked a man in his 20s in the street, punched him and stole a bag and an e-scooter worth £600.

He was arrested the next day.

The defendants were initially sentenced at Bristol Crown Court in August, with Sharif, of Easton, jailed for 26 months and Madden, of Hartcliffe, two years.

The Solicitor General referred the sentences to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme and at a hearing on November 10 the previous sentences were quashed.

Walker's was increased to five years, Sharif was given three years and four months, and Madden two years and 10

Afterwards Detective Inspector Keith Smith said: "We are pleased to see the seriousness of the offences has been truly reflected in the sentences.

"Violent robberies were committed against two innocent victims and it is only right those responsible for them are jailed for a significant amount of time.

"I hope these sentences heed as a warning to people that the police and courts will not tolerate violence on our streets."

Solicitor General Michael Tomlinson said: "The level of violence and brutality used by these men in this case was particularly heinous.

"The courts have quite rightfully increased their sentences and I hope it sends a clear message that we will pursue violent offenders through the court to protect the public from harm."

Teen admits drug dealing A TEENAGER from Yate is awaiting sentence after he admitted drug dealing in Bristol.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on November 7 in Broadmead along with two men.

Police seized heroin and crack cocaine, three knives, more than £1,600 in cash and a suspected stolen bike.

The teenager later admitted

possessing a knife and possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply.

He was released on bail, subject to a curfew monitored by electronic tag, and is due to be sentenced December 6.

The arrest was linked to drug dealing in the St Paul's area of Bristol. The two men arrested, from Bristol, have also admitted offences and are in custody.

Yate care home told it must improve A CARE home in Yate has been ordered to improve its safety standards after an inspection by the independent health watchdog - which criticised staff for wearing nail varnish.

The Meadows in Cranleigh Court was rated as “requiring improvement” in safety and management by the Care Quality Commission.

However, care and treatment of residents was rated as “outstanding”, with effectiveness and responsiveness both rated 'good' at the home, which can accommodate up to 54 people.

The inspection in May, when there were 53 people living there, found risk assessments were not always regularly reviewed and in some cases lacked guidance for staff.

The report said: “Staff did not always follow infection prevention and control guidance to minimise risks related to the spread of infection.

“We observed at least five staff

members wearing nail varnish and/or gel nails. This is not considered best practice from an infection prevention and control perspective.”

The inspectors also found that some people had bed rails in place, two with no covers on them, leaving gaps which could risk entrapment.

They also found that although people's mental capacity had been assessed for their ability to consent to aspects of their care, assessments did not always record decisions made in line with guidance. Staff knowledge around mental capacity was inconsistent.

The CQC said many of the issues highlighted were corrected immediately by the management team.

The report said: “We discussed our concerns with the deputy manager and the management team during the inspection. The management team informed us they had rectified their systems and processes to ensure the

shortfalls were addressed.”

The inspectors highlighted that staff and relatives were positive about the culture and ethos of the home, and said the senior team led by example and were respected by staff.

Feedback from both residents and relatives was positive.

The CQC says it has told Windmill Care, which runs the home, to report back on how it will provide systems to assess and manage safety. It has also been told to provide evidence of improved quality assurance and monitoring.

Windmill Care has three homes in South Gloucestershire, with nearly 200 residents, and employs 250 people.

The company said it was disappointed with the overall assessment but delighted at feedback inspectors had from residents.

It said changes have already been put in place to correct the shortcomings.

Operations Director Richard Deverson said: “The Meadows has been delivering high quality care to the local residents of South Glos since 2018.

“The home is staffed by an amazingly talented, committed and hard-working team of over 90, who all live in the local area.”

Mr Deverson said during the inspection, some areas of administration and supporting documentation were looked at in detail, gaps were found and quickly corrected.

He said where changes were needed, these had already been implemented.

Mr Deverson added: "Whilst some areas require improvement, The Meadows has been assessed as outstanding for the Care delivered at the home.

"The team at the home look forward to seeing the inspection team again soon and demonstrating the changes already put in place following the inspection in May.”

Free bus: use it or lose it PEOPLE are being encouraged to make more use of a free shuttle bus set up after the closure of the M4 Badminton Road bridge.

The YCL service is funded by National Highways, which closed the bridge on safety grounds, and takes people from Yate Park & Ride along Badminton Road to Cuckoo Lane, just north of the bridge, to link with metrobus services from nearby stops on the Avon Ring Road.

Operated by Transpora, it runs every half hour in each direction on weekdays from 7am to 7pm and offers a route between Yate and Bristol for people left stranded when the Y1 service was diverted away from Badminton Road.

From Cuckoo Lane, passengers can walk across the bridge to nearby metrobus stops for services to Bristol, UWE and Emersons Green.

South Gloucestershire Council has posted a video on social media interviewing passengers, and calling for more people to use the bus.

The council said: "We would love more people to use the National Highways-funded trial service to ensure it can continue to run into the New Year.

"It's already proving to be an invaluable service to morning commuters."

The bridge, next to the Wick Wick roundabout where the A432 Badminton Road meets the A4174 Avon Ring R oad, has been closed since July.

The closure effectively cut off the main route from Yate, Coalpit Heath and Frampton Cotterell to the ring road and Bristol, resulting in thousands of vehicles being diverted through country roads.

A decision about whether the bridge can be re-opened will be made over the festive season.

National Highways says engineers will announce whether the bridge needs to be totally demolished and replaced, or just refurbished.

A routine safety inspection had found "accelerated deterioration and cracking" in the concrete. The Highways Authority immediately closed the bridge, while it assessed the extent of the damage.

The work involved using scanners to identify potential defects, and drilling into the structure to check its condition, and examining the underside.

Residents in Westerleigh have complained of road rage, speeding and dangerous driving by traffic diverted through the village.

The council closed rat runs and installed new traffic lights at the junction of Henfield Road and Westerleigh Road to help manage the traffic.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "Detailed structural investigations showed a deterioration of the bridge, prompting further specialist inspections.

"These are now complete and being assessed. Whilst we are awaiting the results, we cannot speculate on what the final option might be.

“However we are planning, as far as possible at this stage, for a range of possible outcomes including refurbishment, strengthening and replacement.

“The final decision will be taken based on the evidence around safety, engineering and economics. "We expect to announce the solution to be taken forward, along with a broad timeline of activity, in late December or early January."

Council leader Claire Young and co-leader Ian Boulton have said they are "encouraged to hear that the accelerated programme to assess the structure is on schedule".

Band's road trip raises £10,000 MEMBERS of a popular South Gloucestershire rock band have raised £10,225 by cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Tundra singer Mark Evans and keyboardist Ian McGuire covered up to 90 miles each day over two weeks - and at the end of each day played a 90-minute gig at a pub or hotel.

They were joined by guitarist Guy Gibbs, who drove the sponsored support vehicle during the 1,000-mile journey.

The covers band, who hail from Yate, play a lot of gigs in the Frome Valley area, decided to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association charity after Mark lost his brother-in-law Paul Bradley to the disease earlier this year, at the age of 54.

Mark said: "There is currently no cure for Motor Neurone Disease and I wanted to do something unique to raise money in Paul's memory.

"As musicians and cyclists it seemed fitting that me and Ian go one step further than the usual LeJog ride, combining those

talents to draw attention to our fundraiser.

"It's been quite a challenge to perform after a tiring days cycling but we've had tremendous support from our sponsors, friends and family at home and from the many people that have donated at each of the gigs."

After enjoying 24 degree sunshine in Cornwall at the start of the challenge, the pair were lucky to escape the worst of Storm Babet in the Scottish Highland stages, although at times were cycling through 12 inches of flood water and enduring temperatures below freezing on the higher ground.

Ian said: "It's been a tough couple of weeks but we've really seen the best in people on this challenge and very pleased with what we've achieved for MNDa." Ian is a retired wildlife educator, Guy is an electrical engineer and Mark runs an IT company.

Food van operator dumped cooking oil in country lane A FOOD van operator has been ordered to pay more than £4,500 in fines and costs after he was caught dumping drums of used cooking oil in a country lane.

James Crole, of Mapleridge Lane near Yate, was found to be the person responsible for a series of incidents where commercial 20 litre drums of used cooking oil and other waste from the fast food trade was dumped in Bury Hill Lane, on the other side of Wickwar Road from his home.

South Gloucestershire Council prosecuted him and he was ordered to pay a total of £4,597 in fines and costs at Bristol Magistrates Court on November 13, after pleading guilty to fly-tipping offences.

A council spokesperson said Bury Hill Lane had been "blighted by a series of fly-tipping incidents" over the past 18 months involving catering waste, incurring "significant" clean-up costs.

The spokesperson said: "Bury Hill Lane is set amongst picturesque countryside and is a haven for wildlife and enjoyed by cyclists, dog

walkers, ramblers and horse-riders.

"In May the council’s environmental enforcement team started an initiative to identify those responsible for the fly-tips and bring them to justice.

"A sign warning the public that the area was being monitored by cameras to detect flytipping was installed at the entrance to Bury Hill Lane at the junction with Wickwar Road and a camera was periodically deployed to cover likely locations for fly-tipping."

After two incidents of dumping on July 12 and 13, the council installed a covert camera which captured a third fly-tip on the 15th.

The council said: "The video clip of the offence showed a male taking items out of the rear of a Ford Ranger pick-up truck and throwing them into the woodland, before driving off.

"James Crole was subsequently identified as this male and was invited to attend South Gloucestershire Council’s Yate offices for formal interview under caution.

"During the interview, Crole stated that

he is a fast-food proprietor and owns three mobile food trailers which he operates at various events nationally.

"He was shown the video footage and admitted being the person on film and that the Ford Ranger was his vehicle."

Crole said he had dumped the oil because staff at Yate Sort It recycling centre would only allow him to tip one drum of oil per day.

The council said: "It was pointed out that this was a household recycling centre that is not for commercial waste, and Crole confirmed he did not have a commercial contract in place to dispose of his used cooking oil."

He admitted he had fly-tipped on Bury Hill Lane “quite a few times” but denied responsibility for one incident, saying the oil was not the brand he used.

Afterwards cabinet councillor for environmental enforcement Leigh Ingham said: “We’re really pleased that our initiative to use CCTV in this location led to this successful prosecution. I hope it acts as a deterrent to anyone failing in their duty of care for getting rid of waste."

Disposal man burned huge bonfire of dumped rubbish A YATE man who dumped rubbish he'd been paid to collect all over the countryside and built a huge bonfire at an Old Sodbury farm has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Tom Pleass, aged 29, of Cherington, told council enforcement officers he had collected waste "a minimum of 200 times" between March 2020 and December 2021.

He had dumped some at the roadside in locations including Codrington, Tockington, Dyrham and Bath.

But much of the waste was taken to Riverdale Farm in Chapel Lane, Old Sodbury, where it was burnt in an enormous pile, topped by a caravan, on Bonfire Night in 2021.

Last month the Voice reported that farm owner and Yate businessman David Hemmings, aged 51, of Hatherley, had been given a 15-week suspended jail sentence and ordered to pay more than £9,200 after being prosecuted for environmental offences.

Two week after the case Pleass also appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court.

He was given a 36-week suspended sentence, ordered to pay £1,000 costs and a £149 victim surcharge, and to attend a six-month drugs rehabilitation and a mental

A council spokesperson said Pleass and Hemmings operated an "illegal waste site" at the farm.

He was traced to six fly-tips on public roads after householders whose waste was identified said they had paid him to dispose of it.

The spokesperson said: "He admitted fly-tipping waste at two separate locations in

fields where it was subsequently burnt. One of those locations was Hemmings’ property Riverdale Farm in Old Sodbury and Pleass conceded he was present when much of the waste was burnt in an enormous pile, including a caravan, on November 5, 2021.

"Pleass had also registered his tipper truck with South Gloucestershire Council to enable him to use it at the area’s Sort It recycling centres.

"Access to the sites for registered vehicles is restricted for residents’ personal household waste and commercial vehicles are only allowed a maximum of 12 visits per year.

"Pleass took his tipper truck to Sort It centres 12 times over 22 days, and then despite repeated warnings from staff to desist, he went on to visit a further 26 times over 46 days."

Children's support charity facing closure A YATE grandmother says she will be devastated if she has to close her support service for young people, for the sake of a few thousand pounds.

Julie Oakley set up the Project Dragonfly charity 20 years ago, initially to combat bullying.

Since then it has grown into a well-being and support service for vulnerable young people and their families.

But the charity has run out of funds and may have to close at the end of December.

Julie, who won a Pride of Britain Award for her work, told the Voice she was heartbroken at the prospect of having to close the non-profit community interest company.

She said: "It’s so sad.

"We support young people who really need us, and we have so much more work to do.

"Even though none of our support workers get paid, running

Julie says mental health and bullying are unfortunately common problems for children, and funding cuts means many families cannot get the help they need through the NHS.

Project Dragonfly has a network of volunteer counsellors, who are professionals with years of experience in education and the NHS, offering free support and advice.

Julie said: “We provide fun interactive 1-to-1 work, group work and one-off sessions for individuals, families, community groups and all schools.

"We cover anti-bullying and building emotional resilience, helping young people to cope with the negatives of daily life."

She said young people had many worries, including everything from the effects of the covid lockdowns to worries about body image, drugs, knife crime and social isolation.

Julie said: "I don’t want to stop the work we do – it is so important.

"I still have a few years left in me, and a lot of children have been affected by changes in the

world more than we can realise."

Julie says the cost of living crisis means donations are down and the charity is struggling to pay for basic equipment and rented premises.

It needs around £3,000 to keep operating.

Julie has launched an online fundraising campaign, which can be found at justgiving. com/crowdfunding/ Projectdragonflycic.

She will make a decision about the future of the charity after Christmas.

Julie said: “We need donations, but we also need people to help by running fundraising events for us.”

A fundraising tabletop sale at Dodington Parish Hall is planned for January 20 if the charity is still going.

n YATE HERITAGE CENTRE

Yate 50 years ago - a changing town David Hardill finds Yate was undergoing great change half a century ago - but was still very different from today.

READERS of these articles will know that I am fond of comparing today with the Yate of past years. I have previously looked at the Yate of 100, 200 and 500 years ago, but the rate of change around Yate in recent years has been so vast that even 50 years ago is worth reviewing.

The Yate of Christmas 1973 was still a parish undergoing seismic changes.

The Stanshawes Estates, one of the largest private developments in Western Europe, had only recently been completed.

Yate had grown from a parish of under 4,000 inhabitants in 1961 to around 12,000 in 1973.

By that year, the parish had its very own flagship shopping centre of eight years standing, with a new library and swimming baths already in place.

South Yate was already built, but much of Yate remained under housing construction throughout this period.

In 1973, much of North Yate around the Church Road area and much of the Counties estate was being erected or at least mapped out.

Chipping Sodbury, too, had experienced its own rapid development, with housing filling in gaps between the High Street and Yate’s new centre.

Yet much of 1973 would be unfamiliar to us. The fields to the north were much nearer, with much of North Yate and Goose Green Way still to be built.

Yate was still officially a parish, albeit one which had become far more urban in recent years.

The key difference, however, was industrial.

The centre of the town had all the trappings of heavy industry.

Newman Industries, makers of electric motors, remained the major landmark of central Yate, spanning the area occupied by modern day Morrisons, B&Q and the surrounding

Jackson’s PLC, the other main factory, flanked the railway line and Station Road.

Combined, the two sites dominated the central area physically.

Far more people worked in local industry. Although both Newman’s and Jackson’s were enduring a slow decline, both still employed more than 1,000 staff, whose lives were impacted by the factory social club and facilities within the two plants.

Station Road itself had changed character by this time. The mass influx and exodus on foot, to and from the Station Road factories, was largely gone by this time.

The railway station had closed in 1965. The sight of hundreds of staff coming from Bristol by train or coach was largely replaced by car drivers and traffic.

Station Road was in terminal decline by 1973. Yate Shopping Centre had largely supplanted it as a shopping destination for the immediate area.

Hitherto, Station Road had acted as Yate’s high street for several decades, boasting butchers, bakers

By this time, however, the gradual transformation of Station Road into a street of estate agents

and service businesses was arguably already in place.

A year of progress and challenges WITH the festive season upon us comes an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made in our community over the past twelve months and some of the challenges that lie ahead.

Whilst we defeated the plans to overdevelop St John’s Way for now, South Gloucestershire Council have instead proposed that Yate should grow once again.

They must have a plan to make sure that before they sign off these plans to once again grow the town, Yate and Sodbury have the right investment in roads, infrastructure and public services.

The current draft proposals would create more congestion and raise issues about road safety and impact on local pollution levels. In the new year I will be making that case clearly.

We have made progress

on local transport this year.

The reopening of Charfield Railway Station edges closer, half hourly train services from Yate to Bristol and Gloucester are in place and have seen a significant boost in train usage, and the new Park & Ride is offering quick and easy access to the City Centre and Southmead Hospital.

Thornbury Health Centre has (finally) taken a big step forward. Following a long campaign, the Government have signed off 10% of the money we need to rebuild the Health Centre, so we can get the project moving. This is good news, but the fight for the rest of the money has already started. I will not let this go until we have the health services our community needs.

We also had good news for local schools this year, with school funding in South

Gloucestershire set for a record boost, to its highest ever level.

Here in the Thornbury and Yate constituency, record funding will reach over £60 million.

This year has of course presented us with challenges.

We continue to fight to protect local businesses and it is clear that introducing car parking charges would be the wrong decision for South Gloucestershire Council. All this will do is penalise motorists, push cars into parking in the surrounding roads and force customers to shop elsewhere. I will keep opposing these plans.

We of course also continue to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime in our towns, and I have written to the Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset, to call for Yate and Sodbury to receive their fair share of police officers and resources. We have recruited

over 450 new police officers in our area, and we will make sure our communities are made safer.

South Gloucestershire is the most beautiful place to live, work and raise a family anywhere in the country.

As a local man, who was born and brought up in our community, it has been a privilege to represent our community throughout 2023.

The work continues in 2024.

For now, though, I wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas, and Happy and Peaceful New Year.

Big rise in hedgehogs needing help TWO hedgehog rescue centres have been overrun with injured, sick and orphaned animals.

Changing lifestyles and increased building development have been blamed - although more people are also aware of the animals in their gardens, and know they can need a helping hand.

Yate Hedgehog Rescue, which was started in a back garden by Yvonne Cox 20 years ago, has been getting 15 calls a day from people with hedgehogs in need of care.

By late November they had taken in 491 this year – 80 more than the same time last year.

And volunteers at Chipping Sodbury Hedgehog Rescue, which was set up by nurse Tracey Boden ten years ago, have been "run off their feet".

Both organisations have asked members of the public to take extra measures to care for the animals, which have been in serious decline for decades.

That includes being careful with strimmers, which can cause serious injury, watching out for hedgehogs on the roads, and leaving an area of garden overgrown as shelter.

Both rescue charities depend on volunteer

carers, and donations from the public.

Yvonne said she welcomed donations of materials including straw, hay, food and even washing up liquid, to help keep down costs.

She said: “I think some of the increase has been because more people are noticing hedgehogs in their gardens. More people have wildlife cameras, so they see hedgehogs that are sick, have an injured leg or look underweight.”

Yvonne has 77 hedgehogs in care, including 37 being looked after by trained foster families. Some need feeding up or veterinary treatment, but all are expected to be released back into the wild once well enough.

At Chipping Sodbury, Tracey said: "We've been run off our feet.

"We are finding quite a few coming in from areas where there is building development, and the hedgehogs are being disturbed from their natural areas.

"People across the board are under more pressure with modern life and may not be thinking about the impact on wildlife around them, from using strimmers to how they drive.

"In the recent heavy rain we’ve had hedgehogs washed out of their nests.

Tracey said putting out hedgehog food at night, not using pesticides or slug pellets all helps hedgehogs.

South Gloucestershire Council has launched a Hedgehog Heroes project, encouraging town and parish councils to set up groups to encourage hedgehog-friendly gardening.

Inspector praises caring nursery staff CARING and enthusiastic staff have been praised at a nursery in Old Sodbury, for their ambitious learning plans and warm relationships with the children.

Overndale Nursery in Chapel Lane has been awarded a 'good' rating by Ofsted following an inspection, which took place in the summer.

Inspector Joanne Neenan said babies and children thrive in the nursery, She said: “Staff are playful and responsive to their needs.

They build warm relationships with the children, supporting them to feel happy, settled and secure.”

The nursery was first registered in 2005, and has 110 places.

The inspector found that the managers have “high ambitions” and dedicate their time to improving the nursery.

She said: "They noticed that children's speech and language skills were lower after the pandemic and have made this a key focus throughout the nursery.

“Staff get down to children's eye level and are attentive to all children's communication. They model language and introduce new words to extend children's vocabulary.”

The report says that “dedicated” staff play alongside children, commenting and encouraging them while following their lead, and children have many opportunities to reinforce their learning.

The inspector said: "Their innovative ideas spark children's interests and encourage them all to become involved in activities.

"Managers support staff well and promote an inclusive environment to ensure consistency in children's learning throughout the nursery."

Children's independence and self-care skills were evident throughout the whole nursery, and staff skilfully supported children to try to do things for themselves, the report said.

The inspector said parents spoke very positively about the nursery, adding: "They love the welcoming, homely atmosphere and feel that staff and management know their children and families well.

"They get suggestions from staff about how they can further support their children's learning at home, including developmental milestones in their children's lives, such as toilet training."

The inspector said there were not always opportunities for children to find out more about different people and events outside of their setting to strengthen their knowledge of diversity.

She suggested the work could be improved further by providing more opportunities for them to find out about different people and events.

The Voice has invited the nursery managers to comment on the report.

A delicious change from Christmas pudding

CHRISTMAS for me, growing up, was a magical time.

My mum was a great cook and she made everything from scratch.

The only trouble was that by the time Christmas Eve came, she was exhausted and slightly grumpy, so I learnt from that.

I try to get ahead with the food and pop dishes in the freezer, an option which wasn’t available to my mum.

It took me a long time to come to the realisation that not everything needs to be home-made. There are certain Christmas classics, like my Christmas cake or mince pies, that I would always want to make myself.

Another thing that has to be said is that Christmas fare is generally very rich and therefore very calorific.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I do love all these delicious treats, but I find less is more these days.

I personally love all the traditional favourites made with dried fruit, but not everyone does.

So for them, and for those who don’t want to spend all of January trying to shift the half stone they put on over Christmas, this dessert makes a delicious change from Christmas pudding.

Fruity pick-me-up pudding Serves 4 Ingredients ● Clementines (good because they have no pips) - 3 peeled, segmented and each segment cut in half, plus one more squeezed and zested.

(Total 4) ● Handful of toasted almond flakes ● Ricotta cheese - 1x 250g tub ● Icing sugar -1 dessertspoonful optional ● Vanilla extract- ½ teaspoon ● Liqueur of choice – 2 tablespoons - Amaretto, Cointreau or Grand Marnier or just use orange juice ● About 100g sponge fingers or Savoiardi biscuits (these are Italian and less sweet). ● Amaretti biscuits, 4, crushed Shavings of dark chocolate to sprinkle on the top – 25g

Here’s what you do ● Prep the oranges. ● Mix the orange juice with the liqueur, or just use extra orange juice if not using alcohol. Stir in the zest. ● Mix the ricotta with the vanilla extract. ● To assemble the dessert: place a few pieces of orange in the bottom of your chosen dish/dishes. ● Sprinkle some almond flakes over the oranges. ● Cover with a layer of sponge fingers/biscuits, dipping them into the orange juice mixture first. ● Top with a layer of the ricotta mix, then repeat the layers until everything is used up (you should have at least 2 layers) finishing with a ricotta layer. ● Cover with cling film for a couple of hours. ● Decorate with 4 segments of clementines per bowl, some crushed amaretti biscuits, sprinkle with chocolate and a few toasted almonds just before serving.

Cook's tips: This dessert needs to be chilled, ideally for at least a couple of hours in the fridge, so start preparing it in the morning for eating later.

You can use one large dish, but I think it presents better in individual glass dishes.

Support our independent shops this Christmas CHRISTMAS thoughts are undoubtedly turning to shopping: please buy local and support our fantastic independent shops this winter.

We have a huge bounty of small, independent shops, selling everything from toys to plants and records to hampers.

They’re the beating heart of the West’s communities, doing much to enrich our lives.

But they’ve faced huge challenges - soaring energy bills, record inflation, and the cost-of living crisis. That’s created a perfect storm for many stores.

It’s why I’ve been offering £15,000 green grants for pubs, cafes and others, so they can install more energy efficient equipment.

I’m proud of this. Companies are cutting their bills and CO2 emissions by seven tonnes on average - great for their wallets and our precious planet.

One group I met recently, who’ve started their Christmas shopping, are care leavers benefiting from a new West of England-wide free bus travel scheme I’ve just introduced.

The youngsters joined me on board a WESTlink minibus and told me about how the scheme means they can better access work, get to appointments, enjoy more days out, and, yes, grab bits and bobs for loved ones at the shops, too.

I then went from a bright green WEST link to a 41-tonne lorry! HGVs are crucial in the Christmas shopping story, ensuring festive goods in our stores.

But we’ve all seen the impact of a regional and national shortage of drivers, in terms of empty supermarket shelves and prices being driven up, all adding to the ongoing cost-ofliving crisis.

It’s why I created a scheme last year to recruit and train new HGV drivers.

While it was not easy, I’m pleased to say we have recruited over 230 in 12 months.

And, of course, Christmas is about spending time with loved ones, sometimes travelling across the West to do so.

Yate and Sodbury remember the fallen HUNDREDS of people took part in services and ceremonies across the Yate and Sodbury area to remember those who lost their lives in conflict.

Veterans, members of uniformed organisations and civic leaders marched through the towns before joining together for traditional services on Remembrance Sunday, November 12.

Yate Town Council, St Mary’s Church and the Royal British Legion organised acts of remembrance at the Lych Gate and Parnall Memorial at St Mary’s.

Before the service at 10am, the Boys Brigade marching band led a parade from the Town Council offices at Poole Court to the church, with the RBL standard bearer followed by the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire, Yate Mayor and chair of South Gloucestershire Council, as well as other councillors, serving military personnel, and uniformed organisations including Army cadets, scouts and guides.

After a service in St Mary’s, the Act of Remembrance and laying of wreaths took place at the Lych Gate, with Boys Brigade member George Hale sounding the Last Post and a representative from the Air Cadets reading the names of First World War dead listed at

At the Parnall Memorial in the churchyard those who lost their lives in two air raids in 1941 were remembered.

Remembrance tribute Time running out to have your say VILLAGERS in Iron Acton produced a spectacular tribute to those who lost their lives in conflict for Remembrance Sunday.

The huge poppy cascade at St James the Less church was the idea of church warden Annette Bishop.

The poppies were knitted, crocheted or sewn from felt by the Iron Acton Craft Group and residents from the surrounding area, then fixed to the church by members of local support group Acton Aid.

A CONSULTATION on South Gloucestershire Council's budget closes in December.

Measures the council is asking people to comment on include introducing charges for on- and off-street car parking, doubling the cost of green bin subscriptions to £60 and introducing a £10 charge for processing blue badge disabled parking applications.

Cuts to the Council Tax Reduction Scheme for low-income families are also being proposed.

Car park charges would raise £1.5m to £2m a year, while the green bin price hike would raise £1.3m.

Council-owned car parks include the Yate Park & Ride in Badminton Road, which has more than 240 spaces, and the town's Abbotswood, Cranleigh Court Road, Kennedy Way, Longs Drive, and Yate Leisure Centre car parks, which between them have more than 300 spaces.

Other shopping centre car parks, including Yate Shopping Centre, Waitrose in Chipping Sodbury and the Mall at Cribbs Causeway are not council-owned, so would not be affected by the proposals.

Chipping Sodbury's Town Car Park, next to the Waitrose car park, is run by the town council and also not included.

Opposition Conservatives have launched a petition against car parking charges.

Group leader Sam Bromiley said they should be "scrapped at the earliest opportunity," adding: “The administration should be doing all it possibly can to support residents instead of saddling them with additional costs, costs that will inevitably be felt by local businesses right across the district.”

The new Lib Dem/Labour coalition says the former Tory administration previously commissioned a report which included “exploring the introduction of parking charges”.

Yate-Genieri Community Link

Children at Genieri school washing their hands THANK you, everyone!

Our appeals for mosquito nets have raised over £950 - grateful thanks to all who have contributed. A visit to Genieri is planned for early December, and the nets will be purchased in bulk in the market and passed to the village healthcare centre for distribution.

The health of the children of the village has been a major concern now for some time.

There have recently been many cases of anaemia, which is usually caused by intestinal

worms (helminths), described as one of the leading causes of morbidity in the developing world.

The school does what it can, ensuring that the children wash their hands before lunch and again afterwards, but it’s impossible to stop little ones from playing on dirt floors and putting their fingers in their mouths.

We have helped provide a single treatment of de-worming medicine plus vitamin A for all under-fives in the village, at a cost of around £195.

Our healthcare centre nurse administered the medicines quickly and the children should now be clear, for at least six months.

Watch out for our Christmas quiz, which will be on our website, www.yategenierilink.org.uk, from December 1. Entry costs £5 and there are money prizes to be won.

Chipping Sodbury morning WI OUR November meeting was a talk about the wonders of magic lanterns and helped us get into the mood for Christmas.

December 19 is an opportunity to dust off our Christmas jumpers, have mulled wine, mince pies and just enjoy a festive time together, naturally with a quiz and raffle.

This is a good chance to see the fun side of our group of lovely ladies.

On January 16 we have a visit from a local auction house, with a coffee morning on the 30th.

We welcome new ladies to all of these events.

We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 10am in the Masonic Hall in Hatters Lane, which is fully accessible with plenty of parking.

Yate Town Council Light-Up Station Road to Celebrate the Season Yate Town Council has lit-up Station Road in Yate, with the installation of seasonal lights to celebrate a number of cultural events at this time of year. The lights will mark the occasions of a number of holidays including: Diwali that takes place between 10th - 15th November 2023. Diwali is a national Indian festival that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and the human ability to overcome; Hanukkah that takes place between 7th - 15th December 2023. Hanukkah is a Jewish festival that reaffirms the ideals of Judaism and commemorates, in particular, the re-dedication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, by the lighting of candles on each day of the festival; The 12 days of Christmas, which take place between 25th December 2023 - 6th January 2024. Christmas is a Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe was the son of God. For most people, Christmas takes place every year on 25 December – the day that the Roman Catholic Church chose to mark Jesus' birthday; Chinese New Year in 2024 takes place between 10th - 16th February 2024. It is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is the most important holiday in China, and it is also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam and in countries with a significant overseas Chinese population.

Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club

NOVEMBER was a very busy month for our club.

Our first tea dance was held on the 2nd, the first of three such events in the run up to Christmas in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

More than 80 guests enjoyed the dancing, singing and light refreshments provided by the ladies of the Chipping Sodbury Inner Wheel Club.

The second event was on the 21st, with a pre-Christmas special on Tuesday December 12, starting promptly at 2pm in the town hall.

Our club president, Steve Young, had the privilege of laying a wreath at the war memorial on behalf of the club during the recent Remembrance Sunday parade in Chipping Sodbury High Street. Despite the weather, a significant gathering was present to pay their respects.

The club made its traditional financial donation to the Poppy

Appeal.

On the same day the Sodbury Slog took place. Steve was at the start to see the runners off.

The club, once more, provided several marshals for the event.

CHIPPING Sodbury Library will be holding free Christmas Craft sessions for children aged 4-10 in the Waters Room in the Old Grammar School Rooms in Chipping Sodbury High Street.

There will be two sessions on December 18, at 10am and 11.15 am.

Tough start to season for hockey club A GREAT win at Wick was the only bright spot in a tough start to the season for Badminton and Pucklechurch Ladies hockey club.

The side, known as Baps, lost the next four but are learning from each game.

The new league season started with the 1-0 victory over Wick in what was a very close, end to end, action-packed game.

Unfortunately, despite putting up a very strong fight away against Bristol and West Jaspers, Baps ended up on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline.

The team had many chances and some great passages of play, however the ball was not wanting to see the back of the net.

Not making life easy for ourselves, Baps would face Knowle away with just eight players in their next match.

However, this challenge didn't phase the ladies and, in true spirit, we worked tirelessly as a

New signing grabs point for Bluebells A DRAW against in-form Bideford was the high point for Yate Town in a month affected by injuries and postponements.

Following on from the 4-1 win against Exmouth in October in front of a season’s-best home crowd of 464, the Bluebells travelled to top-of-the-table Wimborne Town and were unfortunate to lose by the only goal of the game.

The following Saturday they entertained Evesham United and despite scoring first through Callum Hutton, and the sides being level at 1-1 after 70 minutes, the visitors struck four times in the final 20 minutes to win 5-1.

There was great expectation ahead of the Friday night fixture against Larkhall Athletic that was due to be played on November 10.
