Block 'dangerous' underpass AN underpass in the centre of Yate could be blocked up – because it is "unpleasant, and potentially dangerous" for people to use.

South Gloucestershire Council is asking people to have their say over the future of the subway

under Kennedy Way, next to Yate Shopping Centre.

The council said: "The underpass attracts anti-social behaviour, resulting in it being littered with broken glass and drug related litter. This makes it unpleasant, and potentially

dangerous for people to use."

The authority is holding a consultation before deciding whether to bring in a Public Spaces Protection Order to close the underpass off – and eventually even fill it in.

VOTERS in the Thornbury and Yate constituency have just three candidates to choose from in this month's general election.

The field has narrowed to the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Labour after the Greens agreed to drop out of the contest in a pact with the Lib Dems – then the Brexit Party unilaterally withdrew from all Tory-held seats.

It is the first time for more than 30 years the only three parties have stood in the constituency, which includes Yate, Chipping Sodbury and the surrounding villages.

In 2010, the year Thornbury and Yate replaced the Northavon constituency, there were six candidates, including two independents.

UKIP and the Greens stood in 2015, while in 2017 the Greens contested the seat alongside the Tories, Lib Dems and Labour.

The Green Party announced it would not stand a candidate as part of a national agreement with the Liberal Democrats, called Unite to Remain, which aims to give pro-remain candidates a better chance of winning marginal seats against Labour or Tory MPs. In 2017 the Greens came fourth in Thornbury and Yate: their candidate received just 633 votes from a total turnout of 50,690. Their votes would not have changed the result, as Conservative Luke Hall's majority over the second-placed Lib Dems was 12,071.

The Brexit Party announced it would not stand in Thornbury and Yate along with the other 316 seats won by the Conservatives in 2017 four days after the Unite to Remain announcement.

Unsung no longer THE founder of a Yate sports club for people with disabilities has won the BBC South West Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero Award.

Georgina Moore founded the GEM Boccia Club at Yate Leisure Centre.

Georgina has a severe physical disability and set up the club just over two years ago. Boccia is similar to bowls but is played sitting down and players can use any part of their body to propel the ball.

It is a Paralympic sport.

The club is one of the most successful sports clubs in the area which is totally inclusive.

Georgina and around 12 others from across the UK will now go forward to the Sports Personality of the Year Awards finals on December 15, to see who wins the national Unsung Hero Award.

Yate school an 'exciting place to learn' A YATE primary school is celebrating after inspectors said it was good with outstanding features – just two years after being told to improve.

Leaders at Abbotswood Primary School say they are thrilled and proud of the new rating.

Education watchdog Ofsted visited, in Kelston Close, in October. Its report said the school, which was previously told it ‘required improvement’, was now good.

Ofsted examined the school in five areas: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. The report said it was good in all areas except personal development, which was rated 'outstanding'.

They said the school was "an exciting place to learn", with "a wealth of interesting experiences".

The school currently has 291 pupils and an above-average number of disadvantaged PLANS for parking restrictions near a Yate school are being considered as part of a consultation by South Gloucestershire Council.

It comes after local councillors reported seeing drivers who were dropping their children off at Wellesley Primary School in Edgeworth ignoring zigzag markings and parking across residents’ driveways.

The consultation proposes that the advisory yellow zigzags around the roundabout and any

Lead inspector Catherine Beeks said: "Leaders and teachers share a passion for making sure that all pupils have the best possible education.

when learning gets tricky. Pupils try their best, because they are keen to make their teachers proud."

Executive head teacher Rob Cockle said: “We were thrilled with the overall judgement of Good with many Outstanding features and especially pleased with the Outstanding judgement for personal development.

"This report is a validation of the incredible hard work and professionalism of all the staff,

the hard work and behaviour of our students and the support of our parents and carers."

Head of school Sarah Willoughby Smith said: “We’re so proud of our incredible journey over these past two years.”

In a letter to parents the leaders said: “We are very pleased that Ofsted also agreed with our school improvement priorities and shows how far we have come in such a short space of time.

"Each year the Ofsted inspection seems to get tougher and more forensic, and this new framework that came out in September seems to be the hardest yet.”

The Ofsted inspection team advised that in order to improve, leaders should further develop checks to make sure the curriculum is well planned in all subjects, and they should work on improving attendance for a minority of pupils who are frequently absent.

Yellow lines for school run drivers advisory keep clear markings should be replaced with double yellow lines, and that any remaining advisory yellow zigzags should be replaced with single yellow lines. The single yellow lines would be ‘no waiting’ on Monday to Friday between 8-9.30am and 2.30-4.30pm.

Announcing the consultation, the council said: “The purpose of

the scheme is to improve safety outside the school and restrict areas where dangerous or obstructive parking takes place.”

The governors of Wellesley Primary School said in a statement: “While we welcome any traffic measures that ensure the safety of our children, we are concerned they will not be effective unless monitored.

“We appreciate it is very difficult for parents who need to drive to school as there is limited space to park and for residents when it is so busy at the beginning and end of the day.”

Dealer had drugs worth £90,000 A YATE drug dealer has been jailed after being found with drugs worth £90,000 on the street.

Police from the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit raided Sean Mortell's home in Milton Road on October 3.

Inside they found 500g of cocaine behind a kick board in the kitchen and £3,500 in cash stashed in cupboards.

A further 2kg of cannabis bush was found in his van and

police also discovered keys to a lock-up on Mayshill, where 500g of MDMA, better known as ecstasy, was hidden.

Mortell was sentenced to five years and four months in prison after pleading guilty to charges of possessing cocaine, MDMA and cannabis with intent to supply.

The 39-year-old also admitted possession of criminal property at Bristol Crown Court on November 4.

Detective Inspector Charlotte Tucker from the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit said: “Sean Mortell was clearly making big profits, with drugs worth around £90,000 on the street as well as £3,500 cash seized in one warrant.

“His sentence will hopefully be welcomed by people in Yate and serve as another example of the work going on to ensure the likes of Mortell are caught.”

We must do away with this underpass PEOPLE are being asked to have their say on the future of a Yate underpass which is blighted by dumped rubbish, drinking and drug-taking.

South Gloucestershire and Yate town councillor John Gawn brought the state of the concrete walkway under Kennedy Way, to the attention of the council after a number of complaints from residents about anti-social behaviour.

He visited the subway, which links South Parade at Yate Shopping Centre to a path leading to Sundridge Park, and took photos, which he then showed to officers.

John said: “They were surprised just how bad it was. I then arranged a meeting with them, along with some residents and a representative from the police.

“The consensus of opinion, not only of the residents, public in general and the Police was to completely do away with the underpass altogether, as there are two crossings nearby. "South Glos. have done a survey to show that this underpass is not

with a gate and fill it in when funds are available.

People are being asked to fill in a survey saying how often they use the underpass, whether closing it would cause them any problems and whether they use the nearby surface crossings.

If the underpass is shut the council hopes people with disabilities who currently use it to avoid traffic would be able to use the puffin crossing on the road itself, which adapts to the speed of the person using it.

There would be no increased costs in the long term, in fact the council says it would benefit, as street cleaning would cost less.

Twins Ben and Jake turn pro together THEY are both turning professional together but there's one fight Ben and Jake Demmery will always turn down – a bout against each other.

The twins, aged 23, were born 6 minutes apart and 9 weeks early, and unsurprisingly have always been close.

They fell in love with boxing as schoolboys and joined a club next to their school. Now they’ve boxed for 12 years as amateurs and taken part in over 130 fights between them.

Jake said: “We always said if we ever got drawn against each other in a big competition we would do rock paper scissors. We get on very well and always have done and growing up as close as we did means that neither of us wants the other to fail.

“If one of us was to beat the other in a fight we would both feel terrible, so we don’t see the point. We will always stick together and back each other up so to fight each other would ruin that. There is no chance we could fight now. If we wanted to, we could make it happen, but no one is going to force us to fight.”

The twins, who started at Downend Boxing Club and now train at Bristol Boxing

Gym, have very different boxing styles.

Ben said: “Jake is a stand-up awkward boxer, whereas I like to get inside and work and have a bit of a tear-up!”

Their parents have become accustomed to taking them all over the country training and fighting, helping with nutrition and funding their amateur careers.

They are now sponsored by Yate firms Drill Cut and Bristol Windows Ltd which makes it possible for them to box and to have brain scans and medicals.

Both still have jobs outside boxing – Ben is a bricklayer, and Jake fits and renovates timber sash windows – but if their careers in the ring take off they could end up leaving that behind.

Ben said: “We’ve been boxing for so long it’s hard to imagine not doing it. Obviously everything comes to an end, but who knows?

I’d love to be still boxing in 5 years’ time.

“We both like to keep realistic and have short term goals; in boxing it’s important to take each fight as it comes.

"A massive dream of ours, as massive City fans, has got to be to sell out Ashton Gate – now that would be something!”

Daryus scores at debut World Cup A YATE youngster has returned from the Futsal World Cup in Barcelona on a high having scored three goals.

Daryus Andrews, who goes to Yate Academy, and his Great Britain teammates won three matches out of five, losing only to the eventual winners and thirdplaced side.

GB came 9th overall in what was the team's first world championships.

Daryus, 12, old once played regular football for Frampton but abandoned it choosing Futsal instead.

Futsal is played indoors on a hard court, which is smaller than a football pitch. It has two teams of five players, one of whom is a goalkeeper.

At the World Cup Daryus scored two goals against France and one against Switzerland.

His team lost to Columbia and Paraguay and won against France and Switzerland, twice. Columbia came third in

Liam Andrews with his son Daryus at the Futsal World Cup. tournament and Paraguay took the trophy home.

Daryus’s dad Liam Andrews, who is the president of the British Futsal Association, said: “To be honest, because Paraguay were so good they didn’t mind as

much – when you play someone as good as that, you have accept they are far better than you.”

Liam was impressed with the how the youngsters from the Great British team managed at their first global championship.

For some of them it was their first trip abroad.

He said: “The kids have learnt a lot and, to be honest, when we spoke to a lot of the boys and got feedback from them, they said their confidence has gone sky-high.

"They were a very close unit. I had the dad of one lad say to me that during their day off during the World Cup, his son didn’t want to stay with his family – he wanted to stay with his team.”

Liam believes that the team will now go from strength to strength. He now has a leading role helping talented players to get the best coaching, after being elected as the director of all the coaches in Europe.

He said: “I have to create a European coaching curriculum and that gets coached around the world, and I have to teach the coaches those courses, and it will be an international recognised qualification.”

Men jailed for 'incredibly dangerous' theft THIEVES who stole cable worth more than £12,000 from a railway line in South Gloucestershire have been jailed.

Twins Michael and Christopher Nugent, and Martin Ward, were caught after British Transport Police were alerted to their presence by a motion-sensing camera placed by the line at Charfield.

Network Rail had installed the camera after thefts and damage at the site on August 28, 2017.

Just two days later the camera detected trespassers and police caught the 23-year-old twins at the scene.

A vehicle registered to Ward, 24, was found nearby and all three men were arrested on suspicion of theft.

Mobile phone records placed them at the location at the estimated time of the earlier incident and forensics linked the vehicle owned by Ward, used to transport the stolen cable, to the Nugent brothers.

All three pleaded guilty to theft when they appeared at Bristol Crown Court on November 1.

Michael Nugent, of Atwood Drive, Lawrence Weston, was sentenced to 18 months in prison while his brother Christopher, of Clapton Walk, Sea Mills, was

After the case Detective Constable Dan Murdoch of British Transport Police said: “This was a determined theft, which cost the railway an estimated £12,700 in loss, delays

and damages and also had the potential to endanger the lives of workers and passengers.

“These sentences demonstrate just how seriously the courts take such incidents of theft, and we hope this will give the individuals involved time to reflect on their actions and stop them from committing similar offences in the future.

“We are committed to tackling all forms of theft and work closely with Network Rail and other industry partners to make the railway a difficult place for these criminals to operate.

Network Rail Western route director Mike Gallop said: “Cable theft results in significant delays and cancellations across the network and these penalties show just how seriously the rail industry and the British Transport Police take this crime.

“Any attempt to steal cable from the railway is not only a criminal offence but is also incredibly dangerous. Anyone trespassing on the railway risks serious injury – or worse.

“We want everyone home safe every day and we continually look for ways to protect the network from thieves, working with British Transport Police to prosecute anyone caught carrying out metal thefts.”

Thornbury and Yate candidates guide VOTERS go to the polls on December 12 for the country's third general election in less than five years.

In Thornbury and Yate, the Conservatives are defending a majority of 12,071 from the last election in 2017.

Luke Hall has been the MP for Thornbury and Yate since 2015, when he defeated Liberal Democrat Steve Webb, who had won

"Ultimately everyone joins Labour because they believe in social justice, but the reasons why are often very personal.

Mine is my grandfather, a working class boy who'd grown up in the Black Country in the 1920s, who later became a Church of England vicar.

He told me what Britain was like for his family before the NHS – he lost his brothers in childhood from diseases that don't kill people any more, and he lost his mother to what was

Three hurt in fire THREE people needed hospital treatment after a fire at a house in a village near Chipping Sodbury.

Firefighters from Yate, Kingswood, Bath, Patchway, three Bristol stations and one in Gloucestershire were called in to Upper Chalkley Lane, Hawkesbury at around 5am on October 31 after the blaze started in a chimney.

They needed ladders to climb the house and fight the fire, and a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots.

The three casualties were treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the fire is thought to have started accidentally.

Suspended sentence for pensioner who sent MP abuse A MAN who sent abusive emails to his constituency MP has been given a suspended prison sentence.

A court heard Peter Semenenko sent emails that were "of a grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character" over a period of almost two months earlier this year to the MP for Thornbury and Yate, Luke Hall.

The 65-year-old from Frampton Cotterell, started sending the messages on January 19 and stopped on March 22.

His trial took place at Bristol Magistrates Court on 17 October and he was found guilty.

The court heard that the emails caused Mr Hall to fear for his and his family's safety.

Semenenko was given a 9 month suspended sentence and ordered to pay costs.

He was also made subject to a restraining order banning him from any direct contact with Mr Hall or his family in person, via email or any other forms of communication, and not to have any direct contact with his constituency offices in Chipping Sodbury.

Children 'stars of the show' as school's rating improves A YATE school's leaders say they are delighted that Ofsted had recognised their good work.

Inspectors from the education watchdog rated St Paul’s Catholic Primary School as ‘good’, a step up from their previous ranking of ‘requires improvement’ just two years ago.

The school in Sundridge Park has 197 pupils on roll.

The inspection team of two not only visited the school but also considered 51 responses to the online survey Parent View, along with 33 free text responses and 19 responses from a questionnaire to staff.

Ofsted examined the school in five areas: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. It was found to be ‘good’ in all of them.

Inspectors Sarah McGinnis and Martin Greenwood said:

Mum wins battle for life-changing drug A MUM from Yate has won her battle to see the drugs which could transform her daughter's life made available on the NHS. Liz Brennan’s daughter Annabelle, four, has cystic fibrosis. She was diagnosed with the genetic condition at just two weeks old.

Annabelle is among around 4,000 of the 8,200 people who have CF in England who could benefit from a deal between NHS England and the pharmaceutical company Vertex, which makes the drugs Orkambi, Symkevi and Kalydeco.

Liz was more relieved than surprised when she heard the news.

She said: “It wasn’t a shock because of how the language had changed. NHS Chief Executive Simon Stevens had been in front of the health select committee two days before. How he spoke about it was a lot more positive and he said they were very close

Kalydeco is the first drug that was produced to treat the rarer mutations of cystic fibrosis, while Orkambi treats the most common mutations and Symkevi, released more recently, helps address even more mutations and has fewer side effects. But these drugs, which have been made available after four years of

negotiations, have already been overtaken by the next generation of treatment called TriKafta, known as ‘the triples’, which can treat 90% of cases.

Liz said: “If you’re on them every day it turns CF into being a liveable treatable condition; they very recently became available in America. Those drugs are now going through the European Medicines Agency.

"When Annabelle’s 12 and the triples are here, she’ll be treated with the best medicines available.”

Liz hopes Annabelle will be on Orkambi early in the new year. Her daily treatments won’t change, but it is anticipated that

the mucus her body produces will reduce, and that the drugs will make her cells work more effectively. Orkambi slows down the damage which the condition causes to the liver, pancreas and lungs, which should give Annabelle more energy and a far better quality of life.

Liz said: “Life expectancy has improved so much, but half of people with CF still die in their 20’s. They believe that Orkambi gives an extra 25 years of life. If we eventually get the triples it would be normal life expectancy.

That’s why we’ve fought so hard.”

Liz has played a key role in the national campaign, helping to run a Facebook group which has kept the pressure on the government. She is grateful to the local community for supporting her petitions.

She said: “We’ve been campaigning for Annabelle’s whole life. We are aware that we have been very loud and noisy for four years, but it really shouldn’t come down to who shouts the loudest.”

“I’m so proud of what we’ve managed to do. Thousands of people are now having access to the best possible medicine.”

The UK has the second highest number of cases of CF of any country in the world.

Annabelle thanks everyone who helped her cause.

170,000 back plea to save Samet from deportation A FOSTER carer from Yate is campaigning to save a teenager living with him in the town from being deported.

John Stokes has called on Home Secretary Priti Patel to review the case of his 18-year-old foster son Samet.

A petition in support of Samet's case had reached more than 170,000 signatures as the Voice went to press.

Samet, who is from Albania, faced beatings and abuse as a child and ended up begging on the streets before he was sold into slavery. He was trafficked into the UK aged 15.

John said: “Samet is terrified – he thinks he will be killed if he has to go home. His father is a drunk and never earned any money but owes lots of people.

The boys are liable for their fathers’ debts when they are 16.

“Samet is a soldier; he has to fight a battle every day. He’s started counselling for trauma, he doesn’t sleep at night.

"His story has been broadcast across Albania. You go to your local council office there, throw money on the table and they will tell you where the person you are looking for is. The gangs grab them and re traffic them.

"Samet knows other youngsters in the UK who’ve gone missing rather than go back.”

John has been fostering for nearly 30 years and Samet has

Ali was given a visa until he was 17 and a half years old, which allowed him to work, so he learnt to be a chef and worked while he was at college. When they applied for him to stay in the UK aged 18, he already had skills and had been signed up by a top chef. But Samet’s experience has been different.

John said: “What happens now is that they don’t get that first visa. The Home Office is

checking out trafficking and while that is going on, they don’t progress the asylum claim.

"It took over two years for them to decide that Samet had

been trafficked. Previously that was a good enough reason to give asylum. Not any more. Within two months of that he was denied asylum.”

John appealed with legal aid but lost. He’s now waiting to hear whether they can appeal through the courts.

Samet has been inspired by his two brothers to resume his education. He’s learnt English and attends SGS College, where he studies carpentry – but unlike his fellow students, he’s unable to work.

John’s frustration with the system is clear.

He said: “I try and put kids back together, only for the government to put them on the scrap heap.

"When this is done, I’m going to carry on campaigning for the other youngsters. There should be an amnesty for these kids. They could contribute to society.”

n NEWS A FORMER Yate nursing home is to be converted into flats – but new residents could be blocked from reaching parking spaces by unhappy neighbours, who own the access road.

Willow Cottage Nursing Home on Station Road closed last year after the Care Quality Commission rated it inadequate and the council stopped it from taking any new residents.

Developer Sats Ahluwalia has been granted permission to convert the building into nine flats and an office, despite concerns over parking and traffic from residents and Yate Town Council.

A South Gloucestershire Council planning committee gave consent for the work, which will see the three-storey building with a two-storey rear extension turned into six three-bedroom apartments, two two-bedroom flats and one one-bedroom apartment.

But committee members took some convincing before voting five to two on November 14 to allow the development.

Councillor Brian Hopkinson said it was “stupid” that the council could force a developer to provide parking spaces but was unable to make sure the spaces were useable.

Mr Ahluwalia has promised to provide 19 parking spaces altogether, across existing car parks to the front and rear of the site.

But the car park at the back can only be reached via a private road, Bowers Hey, off Treeleaze.

Michael Woodward, who lives with his wife in Bowers Hey, told the committee that he and his neighbours own the private road, together with the previous owners of Willow Cottage.

Objecting to the application, he said: “How can the new owner now be able to use this road without any approach to us? He will not answer emails and we cannot discuss it with him.”

The committee heard the developer was willing to put up signs to discourage on-street parking by future occupiers and to work with residents to allow them access through the site to the shops on Station Road.

The planning officers, who recommended Mr Ahluwalia’s plans for approval, did not consider the conversion would affect parking and traffic significantly.

The application was referred to the planning committee by Yate Central councillor Ruth Davis, with the support of Dodington representative Tony Davis and James Arrowsmith, councillor for Stoke Park and Cheswick.

Major new music festival for Yate A BIG new music festival will take place in Yate next year.

Yate Town Football Club will host the Good Times Music Festival, a two-day event featuring some of the best tribute acts in the country, in May. Festival organiser James Murden said: “Tribute festivals are proving hugely popular around the UK and I truly feel that Yate deserves its own twoday event.

"I have personally scoured the country for some of the finest bands and I can’t wait to bring them to the event. I’m working with a local committee make this an annual event to remember.”

'No action' on deadly air pollution

A DEADLY lack of action on air pollution is killing people in South Gloucestershire, say councillors.

New research linking higher air pollution with hundreds of heart attacks, strokes and acute asthma attacks every year was discussed at a council scrutiny commission.

Councillors expressed frustration that they had seen countless air quality monitoring reports but were still waiting on plans to address air quality from South Gloucestershire Council and the West of England Combined Authority.

Commission co-chair Ian Boulton (Lab, Staple Hill) said councillors had been "fobbed off" that air quality was going to be the responsibility of WECA, adding: “Here we are now...two or three years into WECA, and we’re still having air quality monitoring reports with no action. And meanwhile, there are people who are dying because of poor air quality in our neighbourhoods.

“We need to see a plan for improvement.”

Ruth Davis (Lib Dem, Yate Central)

said: “It wouldn’t be so bad if some of the reports we get to see were going in the right direction, but they’re not.”

The scrutiny commission resolved in July to begin an in-depth review of air quality, including an examination of an air quality plan led by the council. But members heard officers planned to roll the air quality plan into the council’s climate change strategy.

Cllr Boulton said he was concerned the move would “dilute” the two issues.

He said: “Climate change is massive and it’s important. Air quality, potentially, is killing people right now and can potentially be dealt with with existing technologies and in a shorter period of time."

Cllr Davis said the council needed to "get on" with action on air quality, adding: "The longer they take, more people will die.”

A council spokesperson said: “Across the council, we have taken a large number of actions to tackle air quality, particularly in our Air Quality Management Areas, and this has resulted in an improving picture of air

quality in South Gloucestershire."

The spokesperson pointed to action including fitting buses with emissionsreducing technology, making the council's entire pool car fleet electric and the air quality action scheme to reduce pollution at the Hambrook traffic lights by banning vehicles from making some turns there.

He added: "We are currently developing a council-wide approach to air quality, bringing together services which have an interest and/ or impact on air quality. It is anticipated that a council-wide Clean Air Strategy will complement the council’s existing Climate Change Strategy."

The spokesperson said that, as the primary source of both greenhouse gases and air pollutants was burning fossil fuels, "the solutions to reduce carbon and air quality pollutants are largely the same”.

Flood trial halted AN exercise which was to be held in Chipping Sodbury to see if temporary barriers could be used against flooding has been postponed due to the flooding elsewhere in the UK. The Environment Agency has confirmed that the pilot is likely to be held in the New Year ‘so that our resources (barriers) are available if required for use elsewhere’.

The 400m temporary barriers were due to have been put in place along the riverside footpath on St John’s Way on November 13, to see if they might help protect around 30 homes by the river on St John’s Way, Manor Way and Vayre Close.

However the barrier was needed as flooding hit South Yorkshire at the time.

The Frome Valley Walkway at St John’s Way will be diverted for the duration of the test when it takes place.

Flood mapping by the Environment Agency shows that the town is at risk and this is expected to increase with climate change. The last major floods in the town were recorded in 2000 and 1968.

Call to save trees in Yate housing plan

NEIGHBOURS are calling for changes to be made to plans for 45 new homes in the middle of Yate.

People living near the former magistrates court site off Kennedy Way are hoping that modifications to the details of the proposals for the affordable homes can be made by working with Sovereign Housing Association.

The homes will be one, two and three bedroomed apartments and family houses.

Yate town and South Gloucestershire councillor John Gawn, who is working with the residents, said: “The main issue is that they want to remove more trees that have preservation orders on them to put an electricity substation in on the bend in Stanshawe Crescent facing Cleeve Road, but people living nearby will have to listen to the humming.

"We said we don’t want the development to impact onto

The suggestion is that the substation could go on Kennedy Way instead, where there is already traffic noise.

There are also concerns about an additional path now being added from the estate to join an alleyway which runs alongside Thorns Farm.

John said: “One issue is that it’s a dark alleyway, another is

that over the years we have had anti-social behaviour there and drug dealing. We don’t see the necessity of that.”

Residents are also worried about who is going to maintain the trees, hedges and grass.

Sovereign Housing has committed to engaging with them.

Sovereign land and planning director Steve Trenwith said: “At Sovereign we believe in creating

communities and investing in our homes and places for the long-term. The site of the former magistrates’ court in Yate is currently unused and we believe that our development will bring 45 much-needed homes to an area where there is currently high housing need.

“The planning consent for the site has established the principle of providing the 45 homes and we are looking to engage with local people about the detailed design.

“It’s our hope that our investment – estimated at over £8m – will breathe new life into the area, with residents close to amenities and part of the local community, contributing to local businesses.”

Attempts are being made to organise a meeting between the residents and Sovereign or agents Savills.

The homes are due to be built by summer 2021.

Resource base saved after community protest PLANS to shut a specialist centre which enables disabled children to learn alongside mainstream pupils have been shelved.

The resource base at Emersons Green Primary School caters for 12 children, aged from 4 to 11, with physical disabilities or visual impairment, giving them extra support and facilities while they have lessons and play with other children.

Children from across the area use the resource base and among the families who demonstrated against its closure were Tracy and David Brock, of Yate, whose daughter Amber, 5, travels to the school each day. Amber has as dystonia, a muscle condition which means she can't flex her arms and affects her muscle strength.

South Gloucestershire Council is holding a review into special needs and disabilities education by the council, which suggested that the resource base be "phased out" after its current pupils left.

Parents were outraged at the prospect of closing the resource base and staged protests, with a petition calling for the resource base to be saved signed by 6,218 people.

They also marched through driving rain to a consultation meeting in September and wrote to the council arguing their case.

On November 6 the council's cabinet member for schools, skills and employment, Erica Williams, issued a statement

which said the closure of the resource base would no longer be included in the SEND strategy proposals.

A council spokesperson confirmed to the Voice that this means the resource base will stay open for the foreseeable future.

Cllr Williams said the review had been started to "improve access and to focus on broadening inclusion within all children’s local schools".

She said: “Although the feedback we received was supportive of changes to increase the number of places across the district, it is clear that we also need to give further consideration to any phasing out of the Resource Base at Emersons Green Primary School. As a result, we will not be including this change in the proposals that will be taken forward to formal public consultation."

Parents and staff welcomed the decision, issuing a joint statement, which said: "We were extremely concerned that the proposal had not been properly thought through nor had it been subject to any reasonable degree of scrutiny. In asking our detailed questions it would seem that the council has agreed the proposal is either wrong or not ready.

"We are so grateful for the efforts of so many and for the wide support the campaign to challenge the recommendation received."

Jag with royal pedigree goes under hammer CLASSIC cars were a highlight of Stroud Auction Rooms' November sale when a E-Type Jaguar, first owned by Prince Michael of Kent, went under the hammer for the princely sum of £36,500.

The 5.3 litre V12, pictured, was one of 17 cars in the specialist motoring section and comfortably topped the list of highest-selling lots.

Motoring is yet another growing specialist section at Stroud Auctions and there was a huge amount of interest in these vehicles, both in the saleroom and online, resulting in almost in a dozen of the cars on offer making it into the top 25 sold lots.

Among these were a 1953 Riley RMF (£10,400), a 1975 Land Rover series III with less than 25,000 miles from new (£8,200) and a 1947 Duncan Healey coupe project, one of only 7 believed to be in existence (£5,600).

Collectors of militaria were also out in force and a sought-after Royal Fleet Auxiliary group of ten medals, spanning almost 30 years

of service with the RFA, sold for £5,000. The recipient had been on the bridge of the RFA Sir Galahad when hit by Argentinian bombs during the Falklands conflict. An Army D-Day Military Cross medal group for Major H F Wheway, 22nd Dragoons, who landed on 'Queen' Beach (Sword Area) on June 6, 1944 in command of a detachment of mine-clearing flail tanks, made £900. It was sold together with a copy of his citation, in which his commanding officer Lieut-Col G H Grosvenor, said Major Wheway's conduct during days of fighting under heavy fire was an inspiration to all.

Another ever-popular specialist section is guns and weapons, where a number of items featured in the list of top lots. These included a J & W Tolley .303 double barrelled side by side rifle, with named and engraved locks (£4,000).

The Sergeant Tom Mason lifetime collection of bayonets was topped by a German 1914 pattern Gottscho sawback bayonet

(£1,500) - the whole collection totalled over £80,000 and spanned 700 lots. Large collections like this one always draw in the bidders, many coming in person from great distances.

Stroud Auction Rooms has become so well-known for selling weapons of all types that the sale was extended from two days to three in order to accommodate this specialist section.

In the toy section there were over 400 lots, and as usual die-cast models including Corgi and Dinky made excellent prices. But there were also excellent results with less commonplace toys. A Japanese Batman robot sold for £800 and a model tank kit £300, showing that not only the more well-known

items can be valuable.

Stroud Auctions staff are now busily preparing for the bumper three-day pre-Christmas sale on December 4-6 (10am each day).

Martial arts skill runs in the family ALL five members of a family who train in Chipping Sodbury have come home with medals from a martial arts championship.

Emma and David Wilcox, and their three daughters Molly, 15, Ruby, 13, and 11-year-old Eva, were awarded six golds, two silvers and two bronzes between them at the Tang Soo Do European Championships in Holland.

Emma and the girls represented Great Britain, as well as their club. Emma won a silver, Molly won a gold and a silver, Ruby won three golds, Eva was awarded two golds and a bronze, while David won a bronze. Molly and Ruby also secured an additional trophy and Grand Champion status by scoring the highest points total in their class.

David, who trains in Thornbury, said: “Seeing our three girls being so successful was an absolute joy, especially as we know how hard each of them

worked for that reward.”

Emma added: “Ruby started martial arts first and dropped other hobbies to focus on this, so Grand Champion was a great reward for her hard work.

She was delighted. Molly was surprised and overwhelmed at receiving this honour too.”

Emma said: “It provides a really good level of fitness, it’s amazingly friendly and everybody encourages each other. We can train together on the Friday and it’s really good fun.”

“The girls are being taught self-defence techniques and it increases their confidence as they have to go up against their peers in front of a panel of judges in competitions. They will find things like job interviews easier in the future. They are learning skills for life.'

The family hope to represents Great Britain in the future international competitions.

Council spends £1m on redundancies SOUTH Gloucestershire Council spent around £1 million on redundancy pay-offs last year – chiefly because of large payments to made three individuals.

The authority made 125 people redundant in 2017/18, at a cost of roughly £1.6m.

Last year, there were only 30 compulsory redundancies, but the £1m cost was down to payouts of between £150,001 and £200,000 each paid to three people in the year to April 2019, the council’s annual report for the year shows.

Another three got between £40,001 and £80,000, while the remaining 24 received up to £40,000.

By contrast, in 2017/18, the highest redundancy payout was in the range £80,001 to £100,000, and went to one person only. Twelve others received £40,001 to £80,000 and the remaining 113 got up to £40,000.

A council spokesman said: “There were a number of redundancies in 2018/19, following reorganisation within the council as part of our ongoing work to improve the value for money as we continue to deliver our priorities and the services people need.

“The total costs to the council (described as ‘exit packages’) includes pension costs payable to the pension fund to comply with pension rules.”

Altogether the council forked out almost £1.25million in severance payments in 2018/19, compared with nearly £2.05million the previous financial year.

As well as forced redundancies, exit packages of up to £40,000 for staff who left for other reasons were paid to 15 people last year and 22 the previous year.

The authority paid nearly £900,000 for its six highest

paid officers last year, including nearly £60,000 for an agency “interim director” hired for just 17 weeks, the report revealed.

The financial year to April 2019 was a year of churn for the council’s top officials, with two of the most senior officers leaving the organisation and the chief executive announcing her retirement after 14 years in the role.

Altogether the six top official roles cost the council £892,309 in salaries, fees, allowances and pension contributions.

But, with three of the six top jobs each shared by at least two people across the financial year, individual senior officer remuneration paints a complicated picture.

Former chief executive Amanda Deeks received nearly £200,000 altogether, made up of £162,032 in pay and £36,295 in pension contributions.

Dave Perry, who was

Ms Deeks’s deputy and the director of corporate resources throughout 2018/19, was paid just over £130,000 and another £29,132 was put in his pension pot.

Mr Perry replaced Ms Deeks as chief executive in May of this year.

The role of the director for environment and community services was held by a total of three people during the financial year, including an interim agency director between two permanent appointees in June and October 2018.

Employing a member of agency staff to plug the 17-week gap cost the council £58,468 – amounting to an additional £27,000 over and above what would have been paid during that period, a council spokesman said.

Life-saving defibrillator stolen TWO thieves stole a defibrillator which had saved one person’s life since being installed six years ago.

The theft happened at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club just before 1am on September 13.

A man and a woman were filmed on CCTV opening the cabinet, on the wall of the clubhouse in the Ridings main car park on Wickwar Road, and taking out the machine.

However due to poor lighting in the car park the footage isn’t clear.

Both the defibrillator and the resuscitation equipment were stolen and will cost around £800 to replace. The Chipping Sodbury Town Trust is now investigating grant funding to pay for a replacement.

A REVIEW of the organisation that runs Yate and Winterbourne international academies has resulted in a report describing its financial position as “vulnerable”.

The document published by South Gloucestershire’s internal audit service said significant changes were now required to allow the separation of the two schools’ finances.

The Ridings’ Federation of Academies currently still has responsibility for the Winterbourne sites Yate and but the Yate academy - including the secondary school, primary phase and nursery - is set to transfer to the Greenshaw Learning Trust in September.

A request for the review the federation’s governance of and financial management was made by Ridings’ trustees after a financial notice to improve was issued by the Education Funding Agency in light of a potential £1 million deficit by the end of the current academic year.

Preschool's outdoor learning praised A PRESCHOOL in Yate has been praised in its first inspection by the government watchdog.

Ofsted inspector Victoria Nicolson said children were "happy and eager" to start their day at Ridgewood preschool and praised its efforts to ensure they could all learn and play outdoors.

The board of trustees responsible for the preschool, which is a charity, said they are delighted at the findings in the report, which gave them a 'good' rating overall.

Ofsted examined four areas: the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management.

Ridgewood preschool was awarded ‘good’ in each area.

Set up in 2017, the preschool is open during school hours in term times, accepting children aged two to four. It has 26 places per session, with 34 children currently attending.

Staff and children at Ridgewood Preschool Williams said: “On behalf of the board of trustees and the staff team at Ridgewood Preschool we are delighted that our recent inspection gave us a ‘good’ rating.

“We work very hard to make sure that Ridgewood Preschool is a friendly and welcoming environment where children achieve their best outcomes through play.

"Early Years education is vital

for preparing children for school and learning in a more formal environment.”

The inspector said in her report: “Staff consider children’s interests and needs to support them with their learning.

"Staff recognise that the majority of children who attend the preschool prefer to be outside, therefore they have made changes to the environment to ensure that

children can access all areas of the curriculum outdoors independently.”

She recommended that improvements should be made in future to support children to identify risks and keep themselves safe, especially outdoors, and to support children to make friendships.

Mireille added: "We were very pleased with the findings in the report, and the board of trustees are especially pleased for the staff, because they deserve it – they do all the hard work, after all.

"We have put into place already the improvements that were suggested in the report.

"We’re a charity, and the money provided from the Government is insufficient to run the provision the way we’d like to so there are financial challenges, but we do the best with what we’ve got and make best use of our income."

Relay for Life raises huge total

MORE than 100 fundraisers who took part in this year’s Yate Relay for Life gathered at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall to celebrate this years’ total of £74,325.

The event, organised by the Yate Relay for Life committee, featured a barn dance, with the Pipley Dance and Ceilidh Band.

Special achievements were acknowledged: an award was given to Kelvin Bullock, who walked three marathons during the event, and Air Cadet Heidi Collins-Beckett won the Young Fundraiser of the Year Award for organising a team of 2509 air training corps to lead the opening parade on the day. The Silver Strollers team was given an award for having raised £25,000 in five years.

One of the longest-running fundraising

teams, Girls Allowed, had raised £75,000 since 2008 and organised events throughout the year.

Sam Williams, Cancer Research UK’s regional fundraising manager for the South West said: “This spectacular and emotional community festival has contributed an incredible amount for lifesaving research into cancer and every person involved can be enormously proud of the difference they are making to cancer patients everywhere.

"We are especially grateful for the wonderful work the organising volunteers do to bring Relay for Life to Yate each year.”

Money raised by the event goes directly to research projects in the South West, including a project at Bristol University

which is investigating the significance of proteins in cancer cells.

For Beverley Sadier and Liam Craddock, the co-chairs of Yate Relay for Life, the organising never really stops. A Glowalk took place in early November, and the very first ‘Woof Walkies’ event is being planned for March next year. Work is already underway planning Yate Relay for Life 2020.

Panto treat for young carers – oh yes it is!

A CAMPAIGN has ben launched to bring some Christmas magic into the lives of young carers by treating them to a visit to a pantomime.

Carers Support Centre has set up a JustGiving page which aims to raise £1,390 for 20 youngsters to watch Dick Whittington at the Bristol Hippodrome.

The charity works with young people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, including children in Yate, who care for family members at home.

Often their responsible role has a huge impact on their lives and can cause stress and depression as they struggle to juggle life at home with the demands of school and friendship circles.

The centre helps by organising activities and workshops, giving youngsters the chance to meet other young people who are in the same situation.

“The trip is a chance for young carers to take a muchneeded break from their caring responsibilities and meet other young carers.

“This is the first time we’ve fundraised for the young carers’ pantomime using a JustGiving fundraiser. We’ve obtained funding through other means previously so are trying something new this year. Last year a group of young carers went to see the Cinderella at

Bristol Hippodrome and the year before they saw Aladdin.

“Christmas can be a difficult time for young carers, so this opportunity to connect with other young people in a similar situation and take some time out at the panto is so important to them. Without these funds, going to the pantomime would not be possible for them. Activities like this that allow them to just be a child are crucial for their wellbeing.”

A carer is someone who provides support to family or friends who could not manage without their help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. All the care they give is unpaid.

How new locks can unlock a new you A HAIR salon in Kingswood is leading the fight against female hair loss, transforming the lives of clients.

Charisma, on the Kingsway, set up a hair loss clinic seven months ago.

Following the fitting of their integrated hair mesh systems, clients are leaving with a newfound confidence, delighted with their dramatic make-over.

The hair loss clinic is based on the first floor of the salon allowing customers who may feel embarrassed or upset by their hair loss complete privacy.

The intricate work is carried out

by Emily Gil, who originally honed her skills at Charisma as a Saturday girl under the leadership of salon owner Becky Rendell.

After qualifying as a stylist, Emily wanted to explore aspects of the business so went to work for a national hair loss clinic.

She missed the staff and after several years decided she wanted to return to Charisma.

Emily said: “I just wanted to come back as I loved the salon and loved working with Becky but I wanted to continue to work with clients with hair loss. I just wanted to make it more affordable for people.

“Becky and I met up a few times and we started planning the clinic.

It took about a year and a half to plan but now we’re up and running and it’s going really well.”

Emily, 27, has seen clients of all ages with very different conditions causing hair loss or thinning. Her eldest client was in her late eighties but her youngest client was just nine years old. She had hair loss due to treatment for leukaemia.

“It was very emotional,” says Emily, who lives in St George.

“I had a lady who came in before having chemotherapy and I was with her through her whole treatment journey. I’ve seen alopecia, female pattern baldness and trichotillomania, which is where someone pulls their own hair out. “There are a lot of women suffering and I can understand they

Emily Gil might feel embarrassed but we are here to offer support. People are putting their trust in me so I make sure I listen to what they want and take care of them. I want to help every client who walks through my door.”

Potential clients are given a one-to-one consultation where Emily talks them through her integrated mesh system which is attached to your scalp, with bonds made with your own hair in order to individually attach 100 per cent human hair extensions.

“We have a chat and find out about their condition which is causing the hair loss and how long they’ve had it for. I do tests on the hair and see if it’s growing back. We also discuss what they would like to achieve in terms of thickness and length. I encourage clients to bring in photos of the sort of hair and style they would like to achieve.

“If they are happy to proceed we match up hair colours and make a first appointment.”

The system means clients can have their hair any thickness, length or colour they desire, with the added bonus that their scalp can breathe under the mesh, enabling their own hair to grow back, should their condition allow it to.

Clients can treat the hair as

their own and can wash, blow-dry, straighten and curl it.

Emily said: “It’s life-changing.

You can tell that because you see how much confidence a person gains after having the system. They can be very timid and worried when they first come in but by the end of it you can see them glowing with confidence. We recently had a lady who came in with general thinning. She was very shy and apprehensive about what was going to happen but by the end, she was crying with joy - she just loved how she looked. She called me that evening and told me I had literally changed her life.”

One of her clients is Kingswood resident, 55-year-old Debbie Bush.

She had been going to Charisma for years for cuts but, with ever thinning locks, was intrigued by the salon’s integrated mesh system.

“I have really thin hair which runs in my family. I’ve done loads of things to it - I’ve dyed it, bleached it and have gone through stress and the menopause so it all took its toll on my hair. I’ve always wanted long, thick hair but have never been able to grow it past a certain length.

“I was nervous but excited and I couldn’t believe the result - it looked so natural! It’s given me a lot more confidence. I now bother with myself more and wear make

up because I’ve got nice hair to show off.

“I wasn’t embarrassed by my thin hair but it was hard work. I had to wash and blow-dry it every morning just for it to look ok, but now it’s just once a week.

“It was a considered purchase but I would say it’s well worth it as it makes me feel so good.”

Clients need to return every six to eight weeks to have the system tightened as it becomes slightly looser once their own hair starts growing underneath.

Once every six months the system is completely taken off, their hair and scalp washed and any repairs are carried out before the hair is connected back to the mesh. The system should last between two and two and a half years, depending on how it is looked after.

Emily said she loves her work and is delighted to be back.

“I always wanted to end up back at Charisma but I didn’t know what I wanted to specialise in. It was only when I got into hair loss solutions that I knew what I wanted to do.

“You build friendships and personal relationships with clients as you go on a journey with them.

“The best feeling in the world is watching their emotion at the end.

It’s priceless and it’s what makes my job worthwhile.”

Awards celebrate volunteers' good work VOLUNTEERS from a group helping to conserve a nature reserve near Yate were among more than 50 people thanked for the important work they do to help maintain the area's open spaces.

South Gloucestershire Council’s Community Spaces Network hosted the event at the Bristol and Bath Science Park, welcoming volunteers from 28 different groups who work across the district to maintain parks, nature reserves and public rights of way.

They included volunteer workers from Friends of Ram Hill Colliery in Coalpit Heath, the Friends Of St James Churchyard in Charfield, Wapley Bushes Conservation Group in Dodington and Avon Wildlife Trust.

The volunteers were thanked for the work they do by the Chair of South Gloucestershire Council, Brian Allinson, who said: “We

know that without your help, our natural environment and the places we hold so close to our hearts would not be as beautifully cared for as they are.

"Your help and hard work in all weathers is greatly

appreciated and I would like to personally thank you and your members.”

Volunteers from the Forgotten Landscape project spoke about the importance of surveying wildlife and shared

their experience of recording water voles, great crested newts and wetland birds along the Severn Estuary, while council officers delivered talks on climate change and the measures being taken by the local authority to achieve its target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and some friends’ groups hosted stands showcasing the work they do.

The Community Spaces Network is co-ordinated by the Community Spaces team at South Gloucestershire Council.

It has been set up to enable community groups which help care for public open spaces in South Gloucestershire to share knowledge and resources.

Second-hand Style A vintage Christmas

R

EGULAR mention of the ‘C’ word before December 1st is a sure-fire way to irritate me, and it would seem I’m not alone. Staff and customers of chain stores that pipe in music have started to rebel against November rotations of the usual 70s and 80s ‘seasonal’ dross, and not before time. I’m avoiding the Mall lest I get trapped in a Slade/ Wizard/McCartney/Mariah chintz-loop.

Instead let me take you gently by the hand and lead you back to a simpler, less commercial time. The year is 1928, and Triumph have yet to find their niche as makers of small sporty convertibles. Instead, from their Coventry factory, they are trying their hand at all manner of different vehicles. This month’s car is Triumph’s Type 15, a large coach built saloon fitted with a 2.2 litre 4 cylinder side valve (‘flathead’) engine of about 60hp. Launched in 1926 and in production for just four years, the 15 was exported heavily but today only two examples survive worldwide. Coincidentally, my late father owned both of them for nearly 60 years. They are highly unlikely to ever hit the used market.

So why should you care? Oh please, indulge me, it’s Christmas. Oh humbug, I said it…

The 15 is in many ways typical of the period – note the running boards, huge 22 inch wheels with a spare on the back and ‘suicide’ rear doors.

But Triumph were pioneering engineers, and this was the first British production car to be fitted with hydraulic brakes on all four wheels.

Triumph were so worried about lesser vehicles piling into the back of the 15 that they added a charming warning triangle with the words ‘Four Wheel Brakes’, feebly illuminated by a small red light, to the back. Today we would call it a brake light. Those brakes, imported Chrysler contracting-band drums, were hugely powerful when new, but soon became obsolete and today are problematic. They get wet in the rain, bind onto their drums when the fancy takes them and are generally a pain. The other fundamental problem with the 15 is that it is, unsurprisingly, underpowered. The body, made to order by your preferred coach builder, is far too heavy. Hills and hot days therefore equals overheating. The other surviving 15 is a two-door fabric bodied

lightweight by comparison and consequently suffers no such indignity.

So far, so what – all vintage cars have their foibles. However, for me, and many others in my family, these cars embody pure nostalgia. I was driven home from the hospital as a newborn in this car. It has served at half a dozen family weddings. My brother and I used to beg my dad to take us for a ride in it on warm summer weekends. It has taken countless family members to nearly every track in England as we attended Vintage Sports Car Club race meetings.

Today it still wins the cup for ‘most original car’ at Triumph club events – the immaculate leather and wood interior is completely unrestored. It looks perfect outside a country pub, and never fails to draw a crowd. Kids in particular love it, aided by the fact that you can get five or more in the back.

What is Christmas if not a time for family and gentle nostalgia? Beat the vulgar 21st century commercialisation of this time of year and start your own family tradition: Check out the Vintage (pre-1940) used car market. If you avoid the very expensive premium marques (Bentley, Rolls, Lagonda) there are some incredible bargains to be had amongst some still evocative British names. Riley in particular seems undervalued.

Alvis prices have shot up. Triumph – well, I’m biased. Deep pockets are required unless you are handy with a spanner, and you will also need a garage. Actually, you might need two, so that you can store all the spare parts. And join a club straight away. Ensure you spend more time driving than polishing. Accept that oil sometimes like to escape onto the floor and elsewhere. The Government classifies these cars as ‘historic vehicles’ and for once, they’ve got it spot on. Such warm waves of happy memories…Merry Christmas, all.

n RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Something different for the festive season

I

’M often asked: “What can I do for Christmas for people who don’t like traditional Christmas cake or who have dietary issues?”

Now, I’m pleased to tell you, I have the perfect option. This cake is packed with nuts and has a beautiful zesty lemon flavour and a lemon glaze topped with pistachios.

To cap it all, it’s gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians. And it tastes simply delicious for anyone.

My husband and friends are my best critics, so I always try a new recipe out on them. This one definitely got the thumbs-up from them.

When everyone is getting so busy in the run-up to Christmas, this is the perfect, easy recipe to have up your sleeve. The great lemon flavour comes from cooking the lemons for about an hour to make a wonderfully zesty lemon paste. This is the only time-consuming part of the recipe, but don’t be tempted to skip it and just substitute it for zest and juice. The flavour just won’t be the same.

Another good thing is that it freezes really well and will keep in the freezer for a month, without losing any flavour. I like to cut the loaf into slices, then wrap it in cling film and a ziplock bag before freezing. That way I always have something to offer when someone says they are popping round.

(You will need to cut off separate slices and let them defrost at room temperature. Microwave defrosting would not work well with the icing.)

This is a real crowd-pleaser and if you don’t tell them, they’ll never know it’s healthy, too.

Lemon and Pistachio Loaf Cake

Makes 1x 1lb loaf or 6 small Bundt cakes – see picture 3 lemons Ground Pistachios- 120g (4.5 oz)– about 1 ¼ cup of whole pistachios Ground almonds – 165g (5.5oz) Eggs – 3 Honey or agave nectar – 150 ml Baking powder – ½ teaspoon Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon Lemon Glaze Icing sugar – 125g (4.5 oz) Lemon juice – 2 tablespoons Rosewater – 2 teaspoons – optional.

soft when pierced with a skewer.

Place the pistachios in a food processor and grind to a fine powder with no lumpy bits.

When cool enough to handle, cut the lemons in half.

Remove the seeds and using a teaspoon, scoop out the soft pulp.

Leave to one side.

Grease your tins either 1x 1lb tin or 6 small Bundt tins. Or you can use paper liners for the loaf tin. This helps keep them moist.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/gas mark 4 Mix all the cake ingredients together in a large bowl. Mix the dried ingredients first, then add the wet ingredients. Mix gently with a metal spoon ‘til well combined.

Put the mixture into your chosen tins.

If you’re making one large cake, bake in the oven for an hour. If the top begins to brown too quickly, cover loosely with foil. Check the Bundt cakes after 25- 30mins.

Cook’s Tip If you like Turkish Delight as I do, add the rosewater for an unusual flavour.

Otherwise just use 2 teaspoons of warm water instead.

For an extra Christmassy flavour, instead of lemons use 4-5 (depending on size) tangerines or clementines to make the pulp. They will take less time to cook – check after 30 mins.

Use 165g almonds, as in this recipe, and swap the 120g pistachios for walnuts, which you have ground in a blender.

The tradition brought back from the dead

IT is a tradition whose origins are shrouded in mystery – possibly medieval or even pagan.

But the annual Mummers play in Winterbourne Down almost died out forever after the First World War. Thanks to a group of villagers and an old lady who remembered the words, the play was revived in 1979 – and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

The traditional folk play, performed in the street on Boxing Day, had not been performed since 1913 after one of the players, Tom Biggs, was killed in the First World War. But 40 years ago it was rediscovered when some village elders were talking about the 'olden days’.

Organiser Terry Martin said: “One lady, Mrs Penton, told of a play that was performed on Boxing Day around the village.

Her father, who had followed the play since he was a boy, had learned the words and he would recite it to her every Christmas. She recounted it to me, which I recorded, and I persuaded my pals in the village to perform it.”

The play is based on the theme of death and the resurrection. Over time the theme has stayed the same, but because it was an oral tradition, each village developed its own version. In Winterbourne the villain of the story is a Turkish knight, but near the south coast the villain is Napoleon. There is always a popular hero, which in Winterbourne is St George. They fight until the villain is killed. Then a doctor, who shows off about his ability to raise the dead, gives the villain a potion and brings him back to life. In the Winterbourne version there is a Father Christmas and a Little Fellow who support the knight.

It is thought that the story could have originated from pagan rituals which represent the dying of winter and the birth of spring.

Recently some plays have been subject to complaints over the performers' practice of blacking their faces for the play.

But Terry says this tradition is based on a need to disguise the performers and not on any racial element.

years, said: “Mrs Penton told us that the characters disguised themselves, as it was considered bad luck to identify the players, and blacking faces was an effective way. They used soot and coal dust then but now we use theatrical blacking as it comes off nicely when someone gets ‘Mummed’ (kissed) on the cheek! Some of us also have tatters hanging down and false beards.”

The play was traditionally performed in cottages, where the characters would enter unannounced. It was considered unlucky not to reward them with money, which would have been spent in the pub.

Nowadays the performers collect donations, which this year go to Coalpit Heath charity Paul’s Place.

The Winterbourn Down Christmas Boys and Winterbourn Down Border Morris will perform the play at four locations on December 26. It will start at the junction of Stone Lane and the top of the Dingle at 10.30am, moving to All Saints Church Hall at 11am, then on to the junction of Colston Close and Station Road at 11.45am, and finally to the Cross Hands at 12.15pm.

Our local houses IT might be supposed that the older buildings in our midst have all been researched to death and there is nothing more to say about them. Over the last few years some of our crack historians at Yate Heritage Centre have been researching some of the lesser known buildings.

Sylvia Eastwood has been researching the Lawns pub.

Today, the Lawns Pub is one of the “New Town” pubs and for some local residents it might be a surprise to learn it has a significant history. It predates many other older properties in the area including the current Stanshawes Court building, Poole Court and Ridgewood.

The Lawns was a home linked

to the Quaker family of Sturge for much of its existence. It is unclear when it was first built, but there is a likely reference to Tobias Sturge owning the land in 1833 and it features on the Tithe Map of 1842. Tobias Sturge, the probable first owner, is described as an “Esteemed member of the Society of Friends” (Quakers).

Sturge’s descendants owned and occupied the property through the 19th century and retained links up to the 1930s.

Most owners were pretty well off.

Daniel Sturge (owner from 1840s to 1881), was a coal merchant, while his son Edward is described as a man of means. Through much of the period there are at least three servants, including a gardener.

There are cottages linked to the house and stables.

Like many local houses, Lawns House is linked to local industry.

By the 1930s, the Bristol Mineral and Land Company owned the property and sold it to Newman Industries. The local 1939 survey shows that the property

family home. Newman was the kingpin of Newman Industries, exerting tight family control over the factory situated only a few hundred metres away from the Lawns. Like earlier owners of Lawns House, he had a housekeeper and gardener living in surrounding buildings. The Newman family retained ownership of the house into the 1960s, before the property was taken over as the pub we know today.

n COMMUNITY NEWS Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury IN late October one of our longstanding club members, Paul Tily, died after a very short illness whilst on holiday with this wife Margaret in Cyprus. Paul was a very wellknown local businessman who, over the years, was heavily involved in many aspects of the community, including the Town Council, the Town Lands Charity, the Town Trust and of course our Rotary club. Paul will be much missed by his many friends and colleagues in the area, not least for his seemingly endless repertoire of hilarious jokes, and his jovial presence at so many local events. Our thoughts are very much with his family at this time.

On a lighter note, John Appleby, one of the club’s longest serving members, recently celebrated his 90th year. He invited over 100 members to Aerospace Bristol for a memorable birthday dinner. Also the club arranged a tree planting ceremony at the Beaufort Polo Club; John is one of its longestserving members.

Recent club activity has been as busy as ever. In conjunction with the ladies of Chipping Sodbury Inner Wheel club, members supported the first of a series of four Dementia Support Group tea dances in the town hall.

Some seventy people attended to enjoy dancing to the music and singing accompaniment. The next tea dance was scheduled for November 27, (2-4pm).

The ever-popular Sodbury Slog was held on 10 November, organised by Bitton Road Runners.

The club assisted with marshalling for the event.

The club provided a substantial donation to the Royal British Legion in support of the 2019 Poppy Appeal. The club also

participated in the Chipping Sodbury Remembrance Day Service and Parade, along with the Inner Wheel ladies.

On the youth front the club provided financial assistance for new equipment needed by Culverhill School, St John’s Mead Primary School and Hawkesbury Upton Primary School. Also, we made a financial pledge to assist with funding kit for Chipping Sodbury Football Club’s under-18s development team.

At the AGM the outgoing president makes an address to the group on the activities taken place the previous year.

I feel like Trump having to make a president’s address but hopefully mine will make more sense and be less controversial than his. So, what have we been doing this past year?

Last November we had a talk from the Young Carers as they received the good cause cheque.

My heart goes out to them, as growing up is hard enough now.

Several members enjoyed an outing to Aunt Martha’s Tea Room and a bit of retail therapy at the Gloucester Quays.

In December we all received make up and dress advice from a pantomime dame as we saw Tim Mayo transforming himself from a normal speaker to a fully-fledged Dame.

In January we had a good postChristmas and New Year catch up along with an American supper and quiz, then in February we had an insight into life as a police dog handler.

The trials and tribulations of

working in Africa was the topic of the talk in March, which also saw the Group meeting held by Old Sodbury.

Wildlife photography from Iceland was on the agenda at the April meeting, with a skittles evening at the Beaufort Arms with some of the best chips served on the High Street.

We are all ladies, but May saw the attendance of a titled lady, Lady Sally MacFadyen, talking about her life living in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

In June Linda Dowsett gave an entertaining talk on being a contestant on the Weakest Link and several of us went to Tiverton and enjoyed a cream tea on the horse drawn barge. Did you see us at the Chipping Sodbury Festival?

We helped show the WI in a different light and gained a couple of new members as a result.

Who would have guessed that there was so much to learn about birthstones? I think we just scraped the tip of the iceberg in the talk from Daphne Atkinson in July.

After a break in August, we had a side-splitting talk from Sarah Harris in September: the title was Marie Antoinette’s Guide to Farming and my money is on this one for being one of the best talks we have had this year.

After the talk from Bristol Auctions in October we will all wonder what fortunes have ended up in land fill.

I can’t end this report without saying what talented people we have: first in the darts and third In the Avon Quiz. Well done.

We have welcomed a number of new members, so why not come along? Make it your New Year's resolution to make new friends – it will be one that you can keep for a lifetime.

Old Sodbury WI “Hilarious Hats” was the subject at our recent Severn Vale Group Meeting and everyone had tears in their eyes from laughter! Over seventy WI ladies gathered at Old Sodbury Village Hall from around the area to listen to Alex Stanbrook telling amusing stories about her life in millinery. Whilst she talked, she was modelling the beautiful creations that she had on her amazing display.

She ended her talk by saying: “It is better to be looked over than it is to be overlooked!”

Our visitors enjoyed a delicious supper of bread with cold meats, cheese and pate, followed by home baked cake.

At this event we were pleased to accept a large amount of donations for the local food bank, which will help local families in serious need in our area.

Our AGM is due shortly and there will be changes on our committee as Angela Barber steps down after five years as our president. She has been the prime mover in the arrangements and celebrations during our centenary year. We are very grateful for the hard work she has done in the last few years and she will be a hard act to follow!

Plans are afoot for our Christmas party on Wednesday December 18, when we look forward to entertainment by the Iron Acton Handbell Ringers.

n COMMUNITY NEWS Our craft group met again recently and enjoyed a jolly evening making Christmas cards with our member Linzie, who supplied us with an astonishing array of decorative items! We plan to display some of our cards at the Baptist Church, for Chipping Sodbury Victorian Day on Saturday December 7.

We have over 40 WI members who enjoy a varied programme of speakers at our monthly meetings.

Yate WI THE last month has been a month of “firsts” for Yate WI – our first AGM, our first Gin Tasting Evening and our first Quiz night – nothing big I am sure you will agree but

all firsts never the less!The gin tasting evening was well attended, with 32 ladies from various local WIs beside Yate WI attending to try a variety of gins, tonics and cocktails. A wonderful time was had by all who attended and the committee would like to say a huge thank you to members Sue Walker, Anne Weaver, Jude Griffin and Karen Witwicki, who planned and organised the evening.

Thank you also to Waitrose, Aldi, 6oClock Gin, Masons, Morrisons, The Perfume Shop, Bloccs, Jimmy Dean and Poole Court for all their support and donations towards the evening. Our latest meeting was on November 11, with 31 people attending for an evening of brain puzzling and cakes. An entertaining evening was had by all and we all went home having learned something new! Sodbury Short Mat Bowls Club THE future of Sodbury Short Mat Bowls Club is looking brighter following the recent AGM, when a new committee was formed under the leadership of chairman Richard Gilpin.

He urged members to find ways to attract new people to play with our friendly group of short mat bowls players at Old Sodbury

Village Hall, on Monday evenings from 6.15-9pm.

Sodbury Short Mat Bowls Club was started in 1995 at Old Sodbury Village Hall, when a group of interested people met and were encouraged to form a club with the help of some experienced players.

We wish our bowls club to continue to flourish in our 25th year.

A singles competition will take place very soon, followed by exciting Christmas and New Year social activities.

In 2020 we plan to invite other clubs to come and play with us and we will be keen to visit them in return.

Why is the NHS offering Carers a free flu jab this winter?

ALL of us agree that helping to look after someone else is great kindness. Carers can be neighbours, friends, and family members or people working in a paid job, but all are truly priceless. This winter the NHS is encouraging all Carers, especially unpaid relatives, friends and all paid home carers to take up the FREE NHS Flu JAB available to them.

Who is eligible, and why?

• If you are over 18 years and care for an older or disabled person whose welfare would be at risk if you were ill, you may be able to get a free NHS flu vaccine. You can also get one if you get carer’s allowance.

• Health and social care staff, employed by a registered residential care/nursing home or registered domiciliary care provider or a voluntary managed hospice provider, if you are directly involved in the care of vulnerable patients/clients, you will also be eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine.

It is free to carers because you need it. This is to ensure that carers are protected against catching flu and developing serious complications. Did you know that even if had a flu jab, you can get the flu from a carer especially if you have a lowered immune system?

If a carer is struck down by the flu and becomes too ill to care, there may be no-one else who can step in and look after the person they care for. It can result in needing to move out of their home or longer hospital stays.

Carers who catch the flu may have no symptoms, (not everyone does) but will still spread it to those they are looking after and their own families too.

The flu jab is the safest way to protect against the flu. No serious side effects (aching arm most common) and it cannot cause the flu (It is not a live vaccine). Also the NHS now uses the more effective vaccines for better protection.

Acrogymnasts bring home silver for Great Britain TWO young gymnasts from Yate’s King Edmund Gym Club have won silver at the European Acrogymnastics Championships.

Harry Hole (16) and George Paget (12) were representing Great Britain in the event which took place in the city of Holon, near Tel Aviv in Israel.

Eight gymnasts in total from the club, which is known as King Eddies, competed in the championships, which is the highest representation ever from just one club.

They had to get through two selection events in the UK and then be chosen to represent Great Britain against renowned gymnastic nations such as Russia.

Mark Thorne, the acrogymnastic coach at King Eddies, said that Harry and George had an "excellent final routine", which won them their silver medal.

He said: “George has made a comeback back from a serious arm injury – he broke it above

Harry is an experienced gymnast – he’s already won a bronze in the world championships in China when he was the smaller of the pair.

"Now Harry is the base, and George is the top. It’s unusual

in such a short space of time to have done the transformation from the top to a base.

“The coaches work with them and spend a lot of time with them, they’ll train 20 plus hours a week over 5 days and mentally they are prepared as well as physically.”

George said: “It was my dream, to compete for my country, and winning silver was something I’ll never forget.”

The two boys are also in the TV show Gym Stars, made by Drummer TV, and film crews were with them in Israel.

There was also success for other gymnasts at the European Championships.

Mark said: “The senior mixed pair, Finn Cockran and Kirsten Owen, had just moved up from 13-19 section to the senior section, which is the highest level. They performed above expectations and finished fourth overall.”

Around 1,500 children a week take part in gymnastics at King Eddies, which takes youngsters from a huge area.

Mark said: “Harry lives in Hambrook and George in Sherston – our catchment area is getting bigger because of the reputation that the club has got and it’s a massive pool of local talent as well.”

Young driver Alfie is British champion A TEENAGE driver from Yate has won the Junior American Cup Car Racing British Championship in his debut season.

Alfie Gendall, aged 13, was crowned after the final round of races at Swaffham Raceway in Norfolk at the end of October.

After a short practice in the morning, the field lined up for the first heat of the day with Alfie starting on the second row.

Although a dry race, the track surface was slippy, so the field was split between drivers on slicks and some on wets. Alfie had a good battle for the lead and in the end was happy with a second place.

Alfie kept his slicks on for the second heat, starting from the back row, but the rain started just as they were lining up. Despite the wet track, he managed to get up to second place and have a close race for first but couldn't quite find a way past.

It took a few laps to get the feel of the tyre setup and move through the field but once up to third position, Alfie got his head down and set about catching the leaders. Coming out of the final turn the two frontrunners, who

were having a great tussle for the lead, came together and spun.

Alfie, who was not far behind them at this stage, managed to miss them and take the lead coming into the last lap and keep it, to take the win in the final and the title of British Champion.

Alfie said: "I am over the moon to take the win in the final and the title of British Champion. In tricky conditions

I managed to stay out of trouble and the car behaved, which was great.

"I have loved my first season in Junior ACCR, made some great new friends and been happy with my performances."

Trophy a welcome distraction YATE Town have produced some of their best performances of the season so far in FA Trophy.

A 6-3 win in the second qualifying round over Southern League Division One South side AFC Totton followed a win on penalties over league rivals Tiverton Town in a first qualifying round replay.

Tiverton are flying high Southern Southern League Premier Division South, sitting second as the Voice went to press, while Yate's unpredictable form has left them just one place and one point above the relegation zone.

But the Bluebells came back from two goals down, both at Lodge Road and in extra time of the away replay, to draw each match 3-3. They then won the tie 4-1 on penalties to set up a third round qualifying round tie away at Braintree Town, which was due to be played on November 23.

Town find themselves bottom of the Toolstation Premier League, three points adrift of the next team, having lost 12 games so far this season, with only 2 wins to their name.

Town travelled to high flying Plymouth Parkway, only find themselves on the wrong end of a 5-2 scoreline. Tavistock inflicted a 3-0 reverse next when they travelled to The Ridings.

As the Voice went to press, Town were preparing for games against Bridport and then two home games against Cadbury Heath and Hallen.

n SPORT Avonmouth 32 – Chipping Sodbury Ladies 71 CHIPPING Sodbury Ladies got their cup campaign under way with a thumping win over Avonmouth.

With both teams short on numbers, the sides agreed to play 10s and uncontested scrums, the first of which led to Angela Griffith going over for Sodbury’s opening try.

Naomi Iles then scored the second after a turnover and, after Avonmouth stormed in through a gap in the defence to pull a try back, full-back Katie

Wins push Sodbury up table CHIPPING Sodbury have enjoyed two convincing wins to push them up to fourth in the Tribute Western Counties League.

Sodbury made the most of home advantage in both games, beating Winscombe 26-8 at The Ridings, before an even more emphatic 51-18 win over relegation-threatened Clevedon.

The two wins means that Sodbury have now won 5 or their last six games. Their only reverse in that run came at the hands of a Cheltenham side that are one three clubs just a point behind Chipping Sodbury in a very tight table.

Yate RFC now 5 from 5 in the league YATE RFC kept their 100% winning record in Wadworths Bristol and District league 2 intact when they travelled to Bristol Saracens.

A hat-trick of tries from Evan Demonick, a brace from James Cannon and Craig Archer, a try a piece for James Falconer, Jordan Hawker and Liam Summerville with the rest of the points coming from the trusted boot of James Cannon saw a 71-24 victory.
