Bus services face 'cliff edge' BUS passengers are being warned that services face a second round of cuts in the autumn, when the withdrawal of government funding pushes them over a "cliff edge".

The boss of main operator First has apologised for the "unacceptable" level of cancellations across the network this summer, and says it needs a "robust", reliable timetable.

to involve more services being cut back – and is launching a consultation to ask people to help make "big choices" on the future of services.

Charity could be wound up A CHARITY which runs a Yate community centre could be wound up, after the government's watchdog placed it under the management of two insolvency experts.

The Charity Commission has been investigating the Shire Way Community Association, which was founded to "advance education and provide leisure and recreational facilities for the inhabitants of Sodbury, Yate and Westerleigh", at the Shire Way Community Centre.

The regulator opened a statutory inquiry in January "over concerns about the trustees’ management of the charity’s resources and financial affairs".

The commission said: "All of the trustees have since resigned, leaving the charity unable to function.

"The Charity Commission has now appointed interim managers to the charity as part of its inquiry."

The mangers, Charles Turner and Paul Barber, are partners in "business rescue" specialists Begbies Traynor, and are listed on the company's website as insolvency experts.

They were appointed to run the charity, "to the exclusion of its trustees", on July 18.

The commission said: "Their responsibilities include securing the charity’s assets and reviewing its financial viability.

"The outcome of the financial viability assessment will inform their next steps, either implementing new governance arrangements or, if it is found to no longer be viable, winding the charity up.

"This may include engaging with external third parties with regard to future arrangements for the charity’s key property assets."

The SWCA was set up in the early 1980s to run the community centre in the south of the town, with support from Westerleigh and Dodington parish councils.

The centre was expanded in the 1990s and included a main hall, skittle hall, activity room, restaurant, kitchen and changing rooms, with the venue operating as the Midway Social Club.

But it has been closed since the Charity Commission launched its inquiry "over concerns about misconduct and/or mismanagement", saying the SWCA had failed to submit annual reports, accounts and returns for three years running.

The commission said it had "subsequently found evidence of payments of ‘wages’, despite accounts for 2019 stating the charity has no employees," adding: "There are also questions about the information reported to the Commission regarding the identity of the charity’s trustees."

Dodington Parish Council has been trying to secure the centre site for "continued community use".

At the end of May South Gloucestershire Council agreed to a nomination from the parish council to designate it as an asset of community value (ACV) to give it some protection from development for the next five years.

In a statement on its website the parish council said it was committed to the site and aimed "to work closely with the Charities Commission and other stakeholders".

The commission's inquiry into the charity continues, with the commission set to publish a report once it has finished.

In its page on the Charity Commission website, SWCA listed its finances for 2019 – one of the years the Charity Commission says it has not filed accounts for – as being £11,180 in deficit, with income of £94,841 but expenditure of £106,021.

Yate and Sodbury to appear in Daisy May drama NEVER mind Hollywood, Bollywood or even Pinewood - it was Abbotswood that makers of a new show starring Daisy May Cooper chose when they needed a location.

The Cotswolds-born actress, best known for writing and starring in BBC comedy This Country, and co-star Karl Pilkington were spotted by fans as they filmed a new comedy drama, called Rain Dogs.

Filming for the new BBC and HBO production even sparked reports of fly-tipping on Sodbury Common, as props were set up to film a scene for the series.

The film crew had set up broken sofas, old cars and fake street signs for filming.

Sodbury Mayor James Ball said he went to take a look after hearing about it.

He said: "The first I knew about the filming on Sodbury Common was when I had messages from concerned residents that something wasn't

quite right, as there was a huge amount of discarded furniture left on the roadside.

"I drove up to the common to see what was going on and I spoke to a gentleman who was helping to set up the film set.

“It's good to know that Sodbury and Yate were both chosen as locations for this new series and I look forward to seeing it on the television later this year."

TV Award for best female comedy performance in This Country.

In the new drama series she plays Costello Jones, a writer and single mother, and the head of a chaotic family.

She stars alongside Karl Pilkington, who worked with Ricky Gervais and in the comedy TV series An Idiot Abroad.

They were both spotted in Abbotswood as they filmed in local streets and a house.

Yate resident and amateur photographer Sue Swanborough, who took pictures of Daisy May, said: "She really interacted with her fans, and had selfies taken.

"I felt she was a really nice person who was spending time with her fans.

“I was impressed how calm it was, how friendly and polite the crew and security were.

"I spoke to many people there and it was all friendly, and came away just impressed with how films are shot!”

Rain Dogs is an eight-part series based on the book Skint Estate by author Cash Carraway, and made by the producers of award-winning comedy Killing Eve, Sid Gentle Films.

The makers describe it as “a wild and punky tale of a mother’s love for her daughter, of deep-rooted and passionate friendships, and of brilliance thwarted by poverty and prejudice".

New fears for future of the White Lion

TOWN councillors fear Yate's historic White Lion pub site could be redeveloped for flats.

The councillors have been holding talks with the prospective new buyer the pub in Church Road.

The White Lion has been a pub since 1644 and is a Grade II listed building, which means it has some protection under planning rules, but there are concerns the car parks around it could be prime sites for new flats.

It had been under offer from a pub chain, after sitting empty for more than two years.

But that sale fell through, and a property development company has stepped in.

The pub had been on the market for £725,000.

the Heritage Centre.

“We are doing our best to protect the Heritage Centre and White Lion for our community and are talking with potential purchasers to try to get a solution for the community.”

In a further blow, South Gloucestershire Council rejected an application by Yate Town Council to have the White Lion listed as an Asset of Community Value.

That would have meant any future sale would have to be notified to the public, and the town council would then have the option to bid on the open

market for the property.

Cllr Willmore said: "An ACV is not a magic bullet but at least we would have the chance to buy it to keep it safe.

"The Town Council could then sell the pub building to someone who wants to run it as a pub, and keep the car parks to prevent anyone building on them."

In a letter to the town council, South Gloucestershire said it rejected the application because there had not been enough evidence of community use.

The letter said: "Although the application states that the car park has assisted in facilitating local community events, no evidence was provided to prove that the car park itself related to these events, merely that it was used as parking for these events."

The letter also said there were other car parks and pubs in the area which offer similar facilities.

Yate Town Council has now submitted a revised ACV application to South Gloucestershire Council.

The pub has room for 200 diners inside, and ten guest bedrooms across two floors, and boasts many period features including beamed ceilings and old fireplaces.

The councillors declined to reveal the name of the developer and a request by the Voice to speak to them via estate agents Fleurets did not receive a response.

Boys robbed in park A BOY was punched and his friends were mugged by another group of boys in a Yate park.

Police say they were called to Kingsgate Park shortly after 4pm on July 25.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers were told that a group of three boys, aged 11 and 12, were in the park when three other boys took £10 from one of them, threw his friend's bicycle in the lake and punched a third in the head.

"The money and the bicycle were recovered by the children's parents and no damage was reported to the attending officers.

"Officers have the names of those reportedly responsible and spoke with one of them, a boy aged 11, at the scene.

"The incident has been recorded as a robbery and enquiries continue."

Passengers told to expect more bus cuts From page 1 Mr Norris said the Y3 service from Yate to Bristol, via Iron Acton, Frampton Cotterell, and Winterbourne, the Y4, from Yate Park & Ride to Bristol via Coalpit Heath, Frampton Cotterell and Winterbourne, and the Y5, from Yate and Chipping Sodbury to Bristol via Pucklechurch and Staple Hill, all faced being cut.

He said that the Y6, from Chipping Sodbury to Southmead Hospital, could see its route changed.

First insisted talk of services being withdrawn or changed was "speculation".

But the Metro Mayor, who has regional responsibility for transport as head of the West of England Combined Authority, said severe bus driver shortages and the withdrawal of government pandemic funding from October, was a "cliffedge" which would affect both commercial and subsidised services, as passenger numbers have yet to recover from precovid levels.

He said: "I am sorry that people in South Gloucestershire will feel these cuts in October, when private bus companies withdraw their services on the less profitable routes.

"My heart goes out to people who will lose buses which I know are so important for getting to work, seeing family and caring for others.

"When it comes to funding, I will always step in to save vital buses where I can, but there isn’t an unlimited pot of cash and even if there was, I can’t magic up drivers."

A First West of England spokesperson said: “As a condition of transitional funding arrangements, bus operators must undertake full network reviews to assess the viability of all routes once funding ends in the autumn.

One aspect of using buses that’s become easier is paying the fare. First West of England MD Doug Claringbold and Metro Mayor Dan Norris have launched the Tap On, Tap Off system, which allows people to pay for their bus travel using a contactless card or smartphone, without having to buy a ticket. A similar system is in use in London.

“This is currently taking place in West of England but we must stress no decisions have been made and it would be inappropriate to comment on speculation at this stage.

“Like all other bus operators in the UK, we must adapt our networks to match the postpandemic demand for services."

Mr Norris is holding a monthlong consultation, called Big Choices on Buses, in August.

Starting with public meetings, the consultation also includes an online survey asking passengers what they value most in terms of frequency, reliability and cost of services.

People are also being encouraged to organise their own neighbourhood consultation events.

In July both Mr Norris and First West of England managing director Doug Claringbold spoke about reliability at a South Gloucestershire Council scrutiny commission meeting.

Mr Claringbold said: "The level of service that First has been delivering has not been acceptable because of the level of cancellations, largely driven by a shortage of trained bus drivers.

"In October we need to have a timetable which is robust, so there will have to be some planned changes to bring us back into line where our resources meet the services we operate.

“We are not prepared to run a non-reliable service."

The Y2 service to Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Downend, Fishponds and the city centre was axed at the end of April, while the Y4 stopped running between the Yate Park & Ride and Yate town centre.

Frampton Cotterell ward councillor and Liberal Democrat group leader Claire Young submitted a petition with over

700 signatures to WECA in July, calling for those cuts to be reversed.

She told the scrutiny meeting: “A bus that goes whizzing past you because it’s full is no better than a bus that does not turn up at all, and this is particularly an issue on the Y1 and T1 routes.”

Winterbourne ward Conservative councillor Nic Labuschagne said: “The bus service is so unreliable, we have a crisis right now.”

A 'Big Choices' public meeting is taking place at 6.30pm8.30pm on August 1 at Yate Parish Hall in Station Road.

n NEWS A PRESCHOOL playgroup in Chipping Sodbury which was rated as inadequate by Ofsted has shut.

Raysfield Pre-school Playgroup closed permanently on July 8, less than three months after the publication of a highly critical report in which inspectors raised concerns over multiple issues, some of which they said "significantly compromised children's safety and welfare".

After the report was made public in April, the playgroup's management committee members issued a statement admitting they had let families down but were "determined to make this right".

However a monitoring visit

by Ofsted in June found many problems had still not been resolved.

The earlier inspectors' report had raised concerns over the entrance doors being left locked, CCTV footage being taken home by staff members and insufficient supervision of children.

This included staff not

'Inadequate' preschool shuts after inspectors return noticing children pushing each other off plastic crates, or intervening when they hit each other trying to get books, as well as "sitting with their backs to babies in high chairs who are eating their lunch, while they tend to other children" which left them at risk of choking.

The inspectors also said that "most learning is incidental", with a curriculum that was "not well designed".

On a return visit in June, by which time the number of children on the playgroup's roll had fallen from 68 to 51, Ofsted inspector Rachael Williams said: "There is some improvement noted since the previous inspection and the management committee are beginning to monitor the quality of the provision. However, this is limited."

She said some training and

support had been given to staff but the curriculum was "not delivered well to older children" and there was "inconsistency" in managing challenging behaviour.

The inspector added: "Staff do not implement their risk assessments effectively to maintain children's welfare, such as keeping them safe when they play in the sun."

Ofsted issued a further welfare requirements notice for the playgroup to improve by July 4, but the group announced it had closed permanently a week before the monitoring report was published.

A message posted online to parents said the decision had been taken with "great sadness", adding: "The team and committee have worked tirelessly to bounce back following the Ofsted inspection. However a recent monitoring visit and

further staff resignations has led to the difficult decision to close the preschool with immediate effect."

A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: "While this is going to be disappointing for some families, the council is writing to the parents and carers of children not beginning school next year to provide details of alternative nursery providers, so that families can continue to claim their free nursery education entitlement in the Autumn term if still required.

"We have also passed on details of Ofsted registered childminders in the area."

Summer search is on

FAMILIES looking for a free activity for the summer holidays are being invited to take part in this year's Chipping Sodbury Summer Search.

This year the event, which helps children discover the town by looking for posters in shop windows, has two trails: one with an outer space theme and the other under the sea.

Each trail poster has a different number of space objects or sea creatures for children to count, then note the number down on a special search map.

They can then add up the numbers on each trail and visit Waitrose to receive a prize.

Maps are available from Chipping Sodbury Tourist Information Centre, Waitrose and most other shops around the town, and can be downloaded from the chamber website, www.sodburychamber.co.uk.

The search launched in time for the start of the school summer holidays and runs until September 3. Families can do one or both trails.

It has been organised by Chipping Sodbury Chamber of Commerce, who said: "We really hope this year's search will be just as successful as the previous years and bring many visitors to town.

"A big thank you to the South Gloucestershire Council High Street team for their support with this year's search."

Road to close A ROAD in the middle of Chipping Sodbury is set to close to traffic for most of August.

South Gloucestershire Council's StreetCare department says the essential gas main work will be carried out on Hounds Road from August 1, and is expected to take four weeks.

The footpath at the roadside will stay open for pedestrians and cyclists who dismount their bikes.

There will be a signed diversion in place via Cotswold Road, Horse Street and Broad Street.

The council said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Driver faces court A WOMAN is facing a motoring charge after an incident in which a horse was 'spooked' in Chipping Sodbury High Street.

Police appealed for information earlier this year after a horse rider reported that a car had reversed out of a parking bay as two horses being ridden past, causing one of them to panic.

Police called on the driver of the car to come forward and also appealed for witnesses and video footage from the area at the time of the incident on January 23.

Last month an Avon & Somerset police spokesperson confirmed that a 63-year-old woman had been reported for summons to court, accused of driving without due care and attention in relation to the incident.

A date had not been fixed for the court case as the Voice went to press.

RAIL passengers are being encouraged to have their say on a masterplan to turn Bristol Parkway into a "21st Century Living Station".

The plan, which South Gloucestershire Council is inviting comments on until August 14, aims to "prioritise public transport (such as bus and train), shared travel (such as hire bikes), and active travel (such as via bike, foot, wheelchair, mobility scooter and wheeled walker) over private car use" by creating a new bus interchange, more cycle parking and walking and cycle routes to surrounding neighbourhoods.

The plan also aims to create a "new street lined by parks, workplaces, cafes, restaurants, community facilities and the new station building".

Date fixed for car charges BRISTOL'S mayor has confirmed the date that drivers of older, more polluting vehicles will be charged to drive into the city centre.

The city's Clean Air Zone will start operating on November 28.

From that date, drivers of cars, vans and taxis with petrol engines made before 2006 and diesel engines made before 2016 will have to pay £9 a day to enter an area including Broadmead, Cabot Circus, the Centre, Temple Quay and Spike Island.

Larger vehicles such as lorries and buses which do not meet Euro 6 diesel engine standards will be charged £100 a day.

The zone was originally due to come into force in October last year, but has faced repeated delays.

Drivers can check if their vehicles will be charged online at gov.uk/ clean-air-zones.

Team on case of rapist POLICE have set up a dedicated team to collate sightings of a rapist and kidnapper who absconded from Leyhill Open Prison two months ago.

Sean Phipps, 51, was released on temporary licence from the jail near Thornbury to visit Bristol on June 1.

He failed to return, and police believe he may still be in South Gloucestershire.

Police said Phipps has convictions for rape dating from 1989 and 1993, and kidnap from 2002, and in addition to being Sean Phipps "capable of carrying out dangerous crimes", he is likely to steal food, clothes and bikes or use "false sob stories" to con people into helping him.

Detectives have warned anyone who sees him not to approach him but to call 999.

They have issued a custody photo but say he is known to change his appearance.

A police spokesperson said: "A dedicated team has been following up all reported sightings and coordinating with other police forces across the country.

"Phipps may still be in the greater Bristol area, including North Somerset or South Gloucestershire, but he's known to walk or hitchhike over long distances and to steal bicycles for transport.

"Phipps does camp out in rural areas. He may approach people to ask for water or casual labouring work.

"Alternatively he may return to Bristol or urban centres to sleep in disused buildings or to search bins for food."

"Detectives are following up a number of sightings after previous appeals, but are also investigating the possibility that he may be using the South West Coast Path and could have reached Somerset, Devon, Dorset or Cornwall."

Phipps is about 6ft 2in tall and slim.

He is originally from Leicestershire and has been at large before, but police said he had "previously handed himself in when wanted".

'Amazing experience' as Georgina carries games baton A DISABILITY campaigner from Chipping Sodbury says it was an "amazing experience" to carry the Queen's Baton on its journey to the Commonwealth Games.

Georgina Moore, who grew up in Frampton Cotterell and founded the GEM Boccia Club in Yate, carried the baton on to the pier at the Wave inland surfing lake in Easter Compton as it visited the region in July.

The baton is the Commonwealth Games' equivalent of the Olympic Torch and contains a goodwill message form the Queen, which was due to be read out at the start of the Games in Birmingham.

Since last October it has been on a journey across the 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth, and during its final trip around the host nation it visited the Wave as well as a boxing gym in Bristol.

"The biggest memory was going out through the doors and seeing the surf board guard of honour and at the end.

"There were so many people cheering and talking photographs – wow!

"It was an unbelievable feeling – another amazing experience that I will never forget."

"Thank you to every single one of you who came to watch and support me. I was overwhelmed with the support."

Nick said: "Being selected as a venue for the Queen’s Baton to visit is an absolute honour and today was a great celebration and a chance for everyone to experience the excitement of the run up to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games."

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games were due to get underway on July 28 and continue until August 9.

Twins cut their locks to help Little Princess TWIN sisters Ellie and Mia Howden loved their long hair – but decided to have it cut so they could help other children who had lost theirs.

The seven-year-old girls from Chipping Sodbury, who attend St John’s Mead Primary School, donated their tresses to the Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs made from real hair to children who have lost their own hair during treatment for cancer and other conditions.

They have also raised around £400 for the charity, which has supplied more than 8,000 wigs to children and young people and invested £20 million in childhood cancer research since 2006.

The twins' mum, Jenny, said: "The girls decided they wanted to cut their hair after we were talking about how some children get poorly sometimes and lose their hair through treatment.

"We watched a video which talked about what the Little Princess Trust uses the hair donations for, and Ellie and Mia agreed that they would like to donate it ‘to make poorly children smile’."

The girls had their hair cut on July 12 at The Salon, in Broad Street.

They had an initial target of £50 but

dozens of supporters helped them to smash it, and they had raised £399, plus gift aid, as the Voice went to press.

New children's homes planned THREE new children’s care homes will be set up across South Gloucestershire to meet rising demand, save costs and keep young people within the area.

The three homes will be bought by South Gloucestershire Council, with an external organisation providing care for up to nine placements.

It is not yet clear where the homes will be.

The council's head of commissioning, partnerships and performance, Carol Watson, told a cabinet meeting on July 11: “The lack of local provision can lead to young people being placed out of the area, in particular those with more complex needs.

"This will support the delivery of innovative models of care, while making savings against current prices that we’re having to pay for children’s provision."

The council now needs to find three suitable houses to buy, and select an external provider. Currently there are four providers of children’s residential care in South Gloucestershire, offering only 18 placements.

Carers need more support THREE quarters of unpaid carers in South Gloucestershire feel they “don’t get the support they need”.

More than half of those responding to a recent council survey said they didn’t have access to good quality information about the support available to them, and four out five said they weren’t able to take a break from caring to support their own physical or mental health.

But more support for unpaid carers is underway, as the council is preparing a five-year plan to improve awareness and provide better respite breaks.

The council’s health and wellbeing board heard details of the plan on July 15.

Adult commissioning service manager Rebecca Harrold said: "What we heard from the consultation was that a lot of carers don’t get the support they need, more needs to be done to highlight the role, and a great feeling that there’s not a lot of awareness of carers in the community and among professionals.

"They need to feel more listened to and their role needs better recognition and more support. "They need breaks that are more diverse and flexible. Young carers need breaks that aren’t school.

"They’re feeling burned out in their caring role and I think Covid has probably exacerbated that situation recently."

The survey found 90% of carers believed there needs to be more awareness of their role and 58% don’t feel listened to, understood or appreciated.

One in four said assessments were “a tick-box exercise" that didn't provide the support they needed.

One carer told the council they had not had a break in 20 years, while another described the council website as "dated, not very user-friendly and not very helpful".

The council says the website, at southglos.gov.uk/carers, includes information and advice, which can also be obtained by calling 01454 868 007 for adult care or 01454 868 008 for children's services.

The council plans to reveal details of its new five-year carer strategy soon, including a detailed action plan about how more support can be provided.

Ladden Garden Village finds its community heroes A SEARCH for community heroes at the new Ladden Garden Village estate in Yate has seen a resident, a vicar and a "hard-working" tradesman presented with awards.

Developers Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes launched an appeal in the Voice in April, asking residents to vote for neighbours and local workers who go that extra mile to make their community a welcoming place to live.

The joint winners were resident Dean Miles and Hywel Snook, the associate vicar for Yate Parish. Marcus Devonish, who works in the area with Xtreme Clean Windows and Gutters, was highly commended.

At a recent ceremony Dean and Hywel were presented with £250 worth of shopping vouchers and Marcus a £100 voucher by Yate Mayor Cheryl Kirby.

Hywel has helped out at events to raise money for charity and organised community events and meetings, and has been described by residents as someone who has "a positive attitude and is always available to help those in need".

Marcus was highly commended for his work in the Ladden Garden area, with

residents describing him as "hard working and trusting, turning up to work with the biggest smile and going above and beyond for his customers".

Barratt Homes Bristol sales director Andrea Pilgrim said: "People are at the heart of our developments and it’s great to see residents come together to give Dean and Hywel the recognition they all so richly deserve."

Barratt David Wilson Homes South West sales director Louise Ware said: “There were some amazing entries and we simply couldn’t choose between Dean and Hywel as they’re both winners in our eyes. We also felt it was important we recognise just how valued Marcus is, too."

Protect yourself against cyber fraud AS I’ve mentioned before, I am the national police and crime commissioner lead for economic and cybercrime and, along with my team, I continue to work with Avon and Somerset Police and partners to raise awareness of the signs of fraud and prevent local people from becoming victims in the first place.

you about the fantastic results of the latest Operation Scorpion, the regional crackdown on drugs.

Colleagues across the South West region carried out operations to disrupt drug supply and prevent drug crime, alongside carrying out preventative, educational and engagement work within communities.

In Avon and Somerset there were almost 700 acts of disruption, including 17 arrests for drugrelated offences, 12 warrants in relation to properties and people linked to drug supply, two county lines disrupted, thousands of pounds worth of class A drugs and cannabis seized and 147 visits or safeguarding checks to addresses of vulnerable people.

These results are sending a strong message to both criminals and our communities that we are intent on making the South West no place for drugs.

The first priority in my police and crime plan is preventing and fighting crime, and not only does this include important enforcement activity but also education work, to make our communities a safer place.

Finally, local businesses can now access Police CyberAlarm, a free tool designed to help organisations understand and monitor the threat they face from malicious cyber activity.

Police CyberAlarm, which is government funded, acts like a CCTV camera and monitors the traffic seen by business connections to the internet. The tool will show local businesses how they are being attacked, the source of the attack and will also help law enforcement identify current threats to take action against cyber criminals.

Heart transplant soldier tells life story A FORMER soldier from Yate who had a heart transplant two years ago has written a book telling his remarkable life story.

The Voice has followed Phillip Hardwell from his months waiting for a heart transplant to successfully taking on the Bristol Half-marathon, just 18 months after the life-saving operation.

He has vowed to make the most of life – and has entered this year's London Marathon, in October.

Phill, aged 35, has written an inspirational book, Hearts of Resilience, about his battles and the courage that brought him through them.

He details how his troubles started long before he was diagnosed with a life threatening rare genetic heart disorder in 2017.

Phill grew up with heavydrinking parents, and his mum died when he was just 14, by which time he was already using alcohol and drugs himself.

He tells how he overcame difficulties life placed in his way, and offers advice to others going through tough times.

Phill said: "It was a sort of healing for me really – to get my story out there on paper and inspire others who might have gone through similar situations as I have."

He started writing the book when he was in Papworth Hospital recovering after his heart transplant and has funded its publication himself.

He said: "I knew I had a lot of unresolved trauma built up from childhood I had not processed, and each day I wrote a few sentences or a page and gradually put a structure in place."

Phill says his “toxic” home life as he grew up in Yate made his teenage years very difficult.

He said: "My mum passing away was very confusing at the time. I was led to believe she was a bad person, when in reality she had a problem that needed help.

"I think I was in an environment where I had low self-esteem and I would try to please people, so I copied them and took drugs.

"Back then I believed I would get more attention for behaving badly than behaving well.

"I forgive my younger self for

doing it as I didn't know better at the time.”

This sentiment is central to his outlook.

In the book he advises: “We only have one life and one body, therefore we need to embrace our imperfections and accept ourselves for who we truly are.”

Phill found salvation at a local gym, and used body building to build his sense of self respect – competing for the Mr Wales title at the age of 15.

He says joining the Army at 17 changed his life, and helped him build resilience to overcome challenges, as he joined the Green Berets of 29 Commando.

But in 2017 came his diagnosis – and his biggest challenge yet. He went through years of ill health and many medical procedures before finally undergoing a transplant in 2020.

Phill, who is now a health and safety advisor, is determined to make the most of life for the sake of his sons, Reggie, aged ten, and Luca, aged four.

The book’s final chapter details ten of the self help methods that have helped him overcome adversity, and could help others - from the importance of exercise, to ways we can deal with issues from our past that could be holding us back.

He said: "I like to think I am at peace now.

"Emotions come and go.

Some days I feel down, but on others I am very grateful for everything and I guess it's a continual process.

"I am determined to make the most of this second chance at life.”

The book is dedicated: “To my donor – the hero I have never met”.

Phill said: “A lot of what I do now is in memory of my donor. I want to promote organ donation – it is so important for people to be registered.”

The dishes have been created by Bristol-based social enterprise, Travelling Kitchen, whose team worked with the ship’s archivists to explore historic recipes from around the globe. The dishes created include a zingy Melon and Ginger Jam from Cape Town, traditional Borsch from Crimea and a tropical green coriander and coconut chutney from Mumbai - and are typical of those that passengers would have encountered as they disembarked in the faraway destinations.

Your usual favourites at Brunel’s SS Great Britain are open all summer long, too. Don’t forget to visit the two hands-on museums, historic dockyard, dramatic dry dock and the ship herself. And remember - you can enjoy coming back time and time again with your ticket. It’s valid for a year!

Toby's epic charity run is finally over A SCHOOLBOY fundraiser from Frampton Cotterell has finished a huge run to raise money for a Bristol charity – and topped his £20,000 target.

Toby Fletcher, aged 11, was greeted by cheers and applause as he finished the final leg of 718km Bearathon at Bristol Bears' Ashton Gate, followed by a welcome event back at home, where he ran a lap of honour at Manor School playing field in Coalpit Heath.

Toby raised the money for St Peter’s Hospice, where staff cared for his muchloved grandmother, June, until her death in February 2020.

Known as Nanny Ju by her grandchildren, June shared Toby’s love of rugby, and used to take him to watch Bristol Bears. So in her honour Toby pledged to run 1km for each point the team conceded over the course of the 2021/22 season.

The Bears' leaky defence meant Toby was set a huge total of 718km – equivalent to 17 marathons – and his pledge to run off the points conceded in each game before the next fixture came around meant he had to ruin up to 52km in a week.

He was joined on the run by a Hospice nurse, and arrived at Ashton Gate Stadium, to be cheered by many of the hospice and Ashton Gate team, Bristol Rugby supporters and his proud family.

Hospice chief executive Frank Noble presented Toby with a Bristol Blue Glass rugby ball sculpture, and a giant tub of his favourite sweets – Haribo Tangfastics.

Toby, who plays rugby for Frampton Cotterell Under-12s, was then surprised by his favourite Bristol Bears player, Fitz Harding, with a special cake showing him sitting under the rugby posts in this season’s shirt.

The Winterbourne Academy pupil said he was pleased it's all over – but may miss all the support he’s been getting.

He said: "I'm excited about finishing my Bearathon, but also looking forward to the rest – and watching Bristol without worrying about the score!”

Toby’s mum Claire said: "As a family we are incredibly proud of what Toby has achieved. Not only has he raised an amazing amount of money but he’s inspired other young people to take on challenges and go that extra mile.

“There have been so many times he hasn't wanted to run, but the support he’s received from friends, family and most importantly, the rugby community have given him well needed boosts during the challenge.”

James Scrimshaw of CURA CLINICAL explains how new technologies are providing effective answers to people’s pain and suffering

MBST Cell regeneration: What is MBST? MBST uses exactly the same technology as MRI scanning, just without the detector coils and imaging software. MBST stands for Molecular Biophysical Stimulation.

It was discovered by a German doctor who noticed that some of his MRI patients had reduced symptoms following their MRI scans. He then assembled a team of biologists and physicists to research these positive effects at a cellular level.

Cells that had not functioned properly due to damage , were stimulated in such a way by the energy transfer that they could again fulfil their original tasks.

It does this at cell level in a number of ways: - Optimising cell oxygen levels - Improving Cell energy production - Optimising intercellular signalling pathways - Reducing inflammatory mediators - Readjusting cell circadian clock-leading to less cell death and cell reproduction.

I’ve also just discharged Kate (left), 5 months following treatment for her arthritic knees (she’d already had a half knee replaced).

She’s now pain free…

I anticipate these results will last a number of years.

This translates to you and I as a healing process in the tissue the energy is applied to which leads to a reduction in pain and an increase in the natural mobility and lifestyle of the patient without any need of invasive therapy.

Obviously there are limitations of the effects relating to a number of factors such as severity and complexity of a patient’s case, however the technology is constantly being improved and we’re getting better at selecting the right patients and conditions in order to get higher success rates and better overall results.

The results we’re seeing now in patients with varying injuries and conditions is really remarkable.

Rob (above) is a great example of how MBST heals cartilage in a moderate to severe arthritic knee.

15 months after his MBST therapy he now runs, plays racket ball and golf without any pain and that’s without his braces. He’s recently done a course on his severe arthritic neck and after 3-4 months has significantly less neck pain and improved mobility. Over the next 6 months I expect his condition to reach over 90% improvement.

Mash returns to help Ukraine aid effort

MORE than 2,000 people attended two outdoor concerts in Iron Acton that raised money for people suffering in Ukraine.

Village charity Acton Aid's rock music concert Mash in the Meadows and classical Proms in the Meadows returned in July after missing two years because of covid restrictions.

This year the twin concerts were back at Iron Acton parish meadow and organisers invited members of From Bristol with Love – a charity set up in 2013 to help disadvantaged children in Romania. It now collects and distributes aid for people affected by the War in Ukraine.

The Friday Mash event was attended by 1,600 people, who enjoyed tribute bands Bootleg Blondie, This is The Police and U2UK. During the interval From Bristol With Love speakers went on stage to explain their work, and describe trips to Ukraine with medical and other aid. They then passed around collection buckets.

From Bristol With Love said: “It was an amazing experience.

The audience was extremely

supportive and applauded us repeatedly.

"We raised almost £3,000 on the day and From Bristol with Love for Ukraine gained an excellent exposure.”

They returned for the Saturday evening Proms – attended by 400 people - and in total more than £4,000 was raised to support From Bristol With Love's work.

Acton Aid was formed more than 40 years ago, and the twin concerts have become one of their high profile fund raising events.

Chair James Rickard said: "We exist to host events for the community to enjoy and use them to raise funds which provide support to the parish in general and individuals in need, but we do make regular donations to charitable causes and organisations in Iron Acton and further afield.

"In addition, members and their families regularly volunteer their time and their skills to help maintain and improve the environment of the Parish."

Acton Aid is hosting two more community fundraising events this year: a beer festival on September 10 and Bonfire Night on November 5.

Keeping cool WITH temperatures reaching over 40C this summer, I have the perfect idea to keep you cool.

My French pea soup can be served either chilled if the weather is blistering or hot if it suddenly turns cold. Either way, you’re covered!

The addition of lettuce is very French, and gives the soup an extra dimension.

Good quality, top brand frozen peas work very well and are much cheaper, though I like to use a few fresh peas if I have my grandchildren staying, because they love to pod them.

This soup makes a good starter or is great as part of a lunch with cold meats and cheeses.

a dairy-free crème fraîche. Either way, you're onto a winner.

Pea, mint and lettuce soup with Parma ham Serves 4 Ingredients 4 slices of Parma ham, finely shredded Large handful of mint leaves 500g peas (fresh or frozen) 100g crème fraîche 1 baby gem lettuce, chopped Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Images Here’s what you do: Sprinkle the Parma ham with black pepper and dry fry over a high heat until golden brown and crisp, turning once.

Place on kitchen paper and dab to remove all excess oil.

Add the mint leaves to a medium saucepan of boiling water.

Add the peas and bring back to the boil: by this time the peas should be just tender and still bright green. Check, cook for a few more moments if peas are a little hard, especially if you’re using fresh peas.

Add the lettuce and cook for a further 30 seconds. Drain, reserving the liquor.

Tip the peas and mint into a blender and a touch of the hot liquor to cover and whizz to a smooth purée.

Add enough of the liquor until a thick creamy consistency has been reached. Either return to the pan and reheat until hot or chill in the fridge if wanting to serve cold in the summer.

Stir in the crème fraiche.

Pour the soup into bowls and top with the Parma ham.

Serve immediately with crusty bread or wheaten soda bread.

n YATE HERITAGE CENTRE

Our changing landscape: North Road DAVID Hardill looks at the changes North Road and its tributary lanes north of Iron Acton Way have undergone in the last 150 years.

DURING much of the 19th century Acton Lane, as North Road was then known, was a classic mining community.

With miners' housing, chapels, pubs, a few local shops and a school, it was a largely selfcontained community, distinct from Yate.

Until the collapse of the immediate mining industry in the 1880s, there were several local coal mines close to the main road.

North Road was a solid, working-class community, the varied housing included a rank of older cottages between North Road School (then known as the British School, for non-conformists) and the Baptist chapel. These were demolished in the mid 20th century.

Lives revolved around the pub – there were four, including the Engine Inn and Miner’s Arms – and the chapel.

In the mid to late 19th century

North Road grocer and baker EG Forrest, pictured around 1920. there was Yate Colliery (ons 1 and 2) and Rangeworthy Colliery and the remnants of old mine workings close by. It was a landscape of coal tips, industrial chimneys and railway sidings.

The community which emerged from the 1880s remained one steeped in mining culture. Many residents continued to work at collieries further afield, at Eggshill Colliery (1890s-1900s) and then at Frog Lane into the 1940s.

North Road remained a closeknit community. The Baptist Chapel thrived for many years, lasting until 2001.

disappeared by 1914, the Codrington Arms and Cross keys remained popular watering holes.

In the middle of the 20th century, there were also two general grocery stores, a bakery, and a fish and chip shop.

Today, North Road remains a distinct area and consequently a popular place to live.

Visually, it retains its historic character, but is very different to 60 years ago. Few old, workingclass properties remain, although

historic middle-class houses like Providence House proudly survive.

All the chapels have closed and the derelict Cross Keys is a sad reminder of the decline of the local public house.

Former shops are now houses, and yet more housing in the area seems certain to be built.

Yet, change is often positive: North Road remains a pleasant place to live.

Countryside remains close at hand. The industrial scars of yesteryear are now local woods and beauty spots, attracting new wildlife.

NHS dental services need more support TOO many families have run into difficulty accessing NHS dental appointments and treatment over the past year.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted our health services in ways we could never have imagined. It is crucial that as we continue to recover from the pandemic, we do everything we can to return our dental services to pre-pandemic levels.

Our local dental practices are no exception: many families are having trouble accessing dental treatment, particularly patients living in Frampton Cotterell, Thornbury and Alveston, and Charfield.

I do however fully appreciate that this is a concern across South Gloucestershire, and there is a lot more to do.

As our local MP I have been pushing government ministers to help us make more progress

in South Gloucestershire. I have written again to the Minister for Primary Care and Patient Safety, highlighting this issue, and asking for further support for families in our area.

I have raised the lack of availability in Parliament, and subsequently met with the minister personally to discuss our concerns.

There are some positive steps now being taken to improve the situation. The government will be investing an additional £50 million to urgently give more people access to high quality dental care. For the South West, this means we will see an allocation of an extra £4.7m.

The funding will secure up to 350,000 additional dental appointments for people in our community suffering from oral pain, disease and infections, to help them get the care they need.

This summer, let’s explore local THERE’S no place like home when it comes to our summer holidays, for the staycation is back.

With the ever-growing cost of living, not to mention the chaos at the Passport Office wrecking even the best-laid holiday plans, many are choosing to play it safe this year and sit out their summer getaway here in the UK. After two years of ‘stay at home’ orders and jumping around the living room with fitness guru Joe Wicks, who fully knew that the solitude of the West of England could help recharge all our batteries?

Who realised that we could all feel reinvigorated by strolling through the gorgeous hills of the South West countryside – a walker’s paradise – from which you can see for miles?

And who appreciated that from adventure parks to nature parks, from festivals to sporting activities, all the family can have a healthy dose of wholesome fun right here in our amazing region?

The secret is now well and truly out. From play and learning at family-friendly favourites like Wild Place Project to the hidden gem that is Radstock Museum, our area is jam-packed with top places to explore.

That’s why, this year, I’ve encouraged all of you to make the most of our fantastic local attractions and get behind them as our pandemic-hit tourism sector gets back on its feet.

My Explore Local campaign has already helped bring thousands of tourists back to our great region, but there is a way to go yet.

And so, if this to be the summer of the great British ‘staycation’ - this a phrase that’s bandied about every year, but it’s fair to say that it’s never been more fitting – let’s take full advantage by visiting the truly amazing attractions we have locally. The UK may well be the staycation nation, but there is no better staycation destination than the West of England!

This summer I’ve been busy visiting many of our great attractions. There are too many highlights to mention but some deserve a special shout out.

In Bath I immersed myself in the spooky history of how Mary Shelley penned her bestselling Frankenstein novel in the city. I should warn you, this one ain’t for the faint-hearted – so children will love it!

Yate Town Council Update Yate Ageing Better Festival Yate Town Council hosted a community gathering at Yate Shopping Centre on Thursday 14th July at Yate Shopping Centre, to showcase and celebrate the number of ways residents can engage and age better in the town.

The celebration showcased entertainment provided by local community Choirs, Tai Chi, Chair exercise and local bands – with plenty of participants taking the chance to sing along, dance and sign up for something new!

Information stalls offered key advice and guidance on issues such as mobility, sustainable travel, Dementia, fire safety and fall prevention.

We are excited to have added e-bikes to the Town Council’s fleet of transport!

The Town Council has taken delivery of the e-bikes via a free Government trial scheme rolled out by South Gloucestershire Council - the bikes will give staff and councillors the option to use them whilst moving around the town without the need to hop in their cars for short journeys. The e-bikes are ridden exactly as a regular bike but with power assist making journeys quicker, easier and suitable for users of any ability.

Having the e-bikes to trial very much supports the Town Councils Climate and Planet declaration made in 2020 where we made a commitment to act in response to the climate an ecological crisis.

n COMMUNITY NEWS Friends of Kingsgate Park MIKE Pearce has retired as chairman of the Friends of Kingsgate Park after 16 years of championing Kingsgate Park as a superb leisure area.

Long time Yate resident Mike was a founder member and has been chairman of the friends from 2006.

He has been involved with setting up all that has happened in that time, Mike Pearce with his sculpture seeing many successful events instigated which carry on to this day: the annual Easter egg hunt, Christmas carols in the park and the Yate Music Festival, which has now become Yate Rocks.

Mike has also witnessed our success in the RHS Britain in Bloom awards over the years.

He has seen the most wonderful addition of the play area as it is now.

The play area is so well-used, by children of all ages.

Other additions in his time as chair were toilets with street art on the side and the carving of a tree damaged in a storm.

So much has happened in Mike’s time as chair, and we thank him wholeheartedly for his support over these years.

Mike was presented with a carved owl, which was designed and sculpted by Yate wood carver Andy O'Neil, in appreciation of his support to Friends of Kingsgate Park.

We wish him well, though we are sure he will not sit back and rest!

Thank you Mike for your voluntary work over the years, to make our park the wonderful park it is.

Yate & Sodbury Art & Craft Club YATE & Sodbury Art & Craft Club had a stall at Yate Shopping Centre in July, providing an opportunity for people to find out about the club and see the sort of arts and crafts that we do.

Started over 50 years ago, the club is for adults who enjoy painting, drawing, pottery, collage and many other crafts, and wish to do them with others in a friendly informal setting.

Our pottery evenings are held in a pottery studio, where your creations can be glazed and fired in the kiln.

We meet up at the Ridgewood Community Centre. Monday evenings are for painting and crafts, and Tuesdays and Wednesdays are for pottery.

Dry eye doesn’t need to mean the end for contact lenses ANYONE with dry eye knows the symptoms can be anything from a minor nuisance to a major, life-altering issue. At Turners Opticians, we’ve helped hundreds of patients gain relief from their dry eye since we launched our specialist dry eye clinic in 2013.

The problem has always been contact lenses for people living with dry eye. For most, they’ve been an absolute no-no. When ultra moist soft lenses came on the market, many of our patients happily returned to contact lens wear.

For some, though, even that wasn’t enough to keep them comfortable.

That’s why we’ve been offering an alternative lens for a number of years now – the scleral lens.

A scleral lens sits gently over the whole cornea, resting on the white of your eye and keeping a liquid reservoir under the lens to keep your eye moist all day. They are available as both single vision distance and multi-focal contact lenses and are an absolute revelation for some patients.

As the name suggests, dry eye disease is a condition whereby your tears cannot keep your eyes moist. A lack of tear production or poor tear quality most often comes down to age. However, diet, medications, and certain medical and inflammatory conditions can also cause it.

The tears produced by a dry eye sufferer literally evaporate too quickly, causing the eyes to become irritated and red. Allergies, wind, and smoke all make it worse, and sufferers typically are sensitive to light, have blurred vision, tired eyes, or the sensation that there’s something in one or both eyes.

All of which leads to difficulties with contact lenses. Rigid gas permeable lenses provide great vision for the wearer, but someone with dry eyes may struggle with them.

Soft lenses are a good, comfortable choice for dry eye sufferers with extended wear or daily disposable options. While daily disposable contact lenses can be effective for dry eyes, they aren’t always the best choice.

Scleral lenses go further as they don’t directly touch the surface of the cornea, which makes them a comfortable option for anyone with dry eye. The gap between the lens and cornea creates a pocket of fluid that provides all-day moisture for the eye’s surface.

Everyone’s dry eye situation is unique, making some contact lens options more effective than others. Someone may struggle with daily disposable lenses but find another option that works better for their needs. n COMMUNITY NEWS Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury OUTGOING president Keith Pattison handed over the role to Bob Holt at a meeting of the club in July.

Bob hoped that club members would continue their efforts to raise as much money as possible, so we can continue to support local community and international needs.

He also wanted to increase the number of members in the club and to ensure that our social programme continues.

After a two-year covid-enforced break, the club was delighted to host, once more, the Young Innovator competition, where students from Chipping Sodbury and Brimsham Green School were given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in producing pieces of work in a number of categories, including product design, textiles, art and photography.

This month the club made financial donations to the Macular Society, following an excellent talk to the club by Susie McCallum from the society, and also to Children’s Hospice South West.

Club members were pleased to help out serving in the beer tent at the recent highly successful inaugural Sodfest organised by Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club, with Rotarian Nick Cragg acting as MC. It was a pleasure to contribute to the magnificent efforts of the rugby club in hosting the event.

A number of club members visited the Cotswold Water facility and enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea, courtesy of John and Joan Marshall.

The two club teams are progressing well in the Rotary District annual boules competition, with both currently sitting at the top of their respective sections.

Yate Rotary Club YATE and District Rotary Club, with much regret, finally closed on June 30 with a dinner for members and partners at the White Hart Inn in Iron Acton, where club meetings have been held for many years.

Many members failed to return after the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was felt that the branch could no longer adequately serve the community of Yate in the proper spirit of Rotary International.

This ‘Last Supper’ was attended by Deputy Mayor, Ben Nutland, who read out a letter from Yate Town Council, expressing appreciation for the Club and the work of its members over 30 years.

He said: "The difference Yate Rotary Club has made to our town over the last three decades is incalculable."

A letter of appreciation was also received from the Chairman of Dodington Parish Council.

Small gifts were given to the staff of the White Hart to thank them for their service, amazing patience and flexibility.

Over the last 30 years we have had fun, had some great expeditions and run some splendid events, but above all we have been able to help many individuals who have appealed to us, and we have supported many local organisations with grants to further their work.

We hope we have made a difference.

THIS month Clemi Williams, from Children’s Hospice South West, came to talk to us about the work they do supporting children with life-limiting conditions, and their families.

We heard how it was important to support the whole family, including the siblings, as they often also become carers of their brother or sister and deal with many very difficult issues.

The Children’s Hospice South West run three hospice premises, with Charlton Farm at Wraxall being our nearest.

Since the pandemic they have also supported families in their own homes, and virtually, the majority of this being financed by the general public and volunteers.

We certainly were in awe of the wonderful work they all do.

We of course had refreshments and time to catch up with each other, and discussed tips on how to cope with the hot weather.

Traditionally WIs take a break in August but next month we are going to have a summer garden party.

Before then, some members will be meeting in smaller groups at our craft evening, walking group and coffee morning.

Yate-Genieri Community Link THE Yate-Genieri Community Link has for some time been concerned that the Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in the village has only a mud floor.

This has meant that it could not be cleaned properly and certainly could not be washed or disinfected.

In the dry season, a small gust of wind through the door would blow dust on nurse, patients and medications. In the wet season the damp floor would harbour all kinds of bacteria: a far from hygienic situation.

A million thanks to John Emms, who, upon hearing of this problem, donated all the money needed to tile the floor. The work has been done already and the village is delighted.

We have launched a clever quiz you can enter online or by mail.

Funds are needed for teacher salaries, school supplies, vegetable production, and possibly emergency rice in the ‘hungry season’ between rice harvests.

n COMMUNITY NEWS Shopmobility South Gloucestershire SHOPMOBILITY South Gloucestershire has paid tribute to two of its long-term volunteers.

Former trustee and chairman Martin Monk has retired from the organisation, having served for almost 20 years, while James Wilshire, who had volunteered in the office for nearly ten years, passed away recently.

Shopmobility is based at Yate Library in Yate Shopping Centre and provides mobility scooter and wheelchair hire for people who have limited mobility.

The charity presented Martin with a special thank-you rose at a presentation at its offices.

Chair Janet Biggin said: "I know Martin was a great member for

Shopmobility project manager Sheridan Crew said: "James was very sociable and well-liked, and his sudden death has came as a complete surprise to those who knew him.

"He was a valued member of the Shopmobility team until he retired last year, and would often be seen on his mobility scooter within the shopping centre.''

You can also go along to a group a couple of times before committing to membership.

U3a intermediate Spanish group is currently recruiting new members. Members are at the stage where they have good basic Spanish vocabulary and can use past, present and future tenses.

Tennis club unveils new games area SODBURY Tennis Club has opened a new games area to create more opportunities for children and young people to participate in sports.

It will also help spread activities to get maximum usage of the club's space at its facility at The Ridings, Chipping Sodbury.

The new games area consists of an artificial grass surface for a mini "red ball" court, outdoor table tennis and basketball warm up area, as well as a mural with tennis targets on the perimeter practice wall.

The tennis club has redeveloped an area of land within the site boundary, which was under-utilised. The existing children’s mini court was in a poor state of repair.

Funding for this £36,150 project was provided in part by a £21,150 grant from South Gloucestershire Council from funds created by the planning process for the adjacent Cotswold Homes development.
