Parents thanked for sticking with Yate academy as Ofsted praises improvements made THE principal of Yate International Academy has thanked parents and carers of its pupils for having faith in the school when it faced “challenging” times.

Paul Skipp said changes made to get back on track after a poor Ofsted inspection last year were making a big difference, leading to positive comments by the education watchdog.

An inspector said after making a monitoring visit that effective action had been taken to help the academy (YIA) become a good school.

Mr Skipp said: “Naturally, we have been really pleased with the findings. The report is incredibly positive, is affirmation of the changes that have taken place and testament to the resolve of staff, students and parents.

“We can all rest assured that the school is truly moving from strength to strength.

“I believe with our strong

partnership between the school, students and parents, we are well on the way to ensuring YIA is one of the best local schools in the region.”

Mr Skipp said positive

reports from the school had also resulted in “huge interest” from local families with primary age children, with nearly 70 already visiting the academy through its “Open day, every day” scheme.

Bands to rock up in Sodbury pub to support children’s hospice charity A CHARITY set up to support Children’s Hospice South West through live music in Chipping Sodbury is planning another fund raising day.

ROCK Charity collected more than £1,200 at its successful

inaugural event in the George in Broad Street in June.

Now local bands will provide the entertainment when ROCK Charity returns on Sunday, September 11.

All residents moved in at housing society’s first Chipping Sodbury development THE final residents have moved into housing association Merlin’s first Chipping Sodbury development.

The £3 million scheme has provided 22 affordable homes in the town, built in conjunction with Bloor Homes.

Five were sold under Merlin’s shared ownership scheme but the rest have been rented, with the homes forming part of Bloor’s larger development of 109 properties built on the former quarry site at Barnhill Gate.

Merlin development officer Shane Smith said: “As the homes were completed in phases, some people have been living there for quite a while now and we’ve had some really positive feedback from them.

“We were also pleased that the five shared ownership homes were quickly snapped up, showing the demand for these type of homes in the area.

“We’ll be increasing the number of properties we build for shared ownership in the future as they offer a great chance for people to get on the housing ladder.”

Last year Merlin completed 79 new homes but it is increasing its home building programme and aims to build 130 in the current financial year. By 2019 it’s annual target will be 300 new properties.

Forest fun time at Ridge Wood returns to quiz children on woodland life CHILDREN and their families can join in a forest trail at a nature reserve between Yate and Chipping Sodbury to test their knowledge of woodland life.

It is the second year running that the summer Forest Fun Time event will be held at Ridge Wood, the tree-covered wedge of land that marks the boundary between the two towns.

It has been organised by the Friends of Ridge Wood, a group of volunteers who look after the site, carry out conservation work and organise community activities, working with South Gloucestershire Council and site owners, Hanson Aggregates.

This summer’s free event will be on Thursday, August 18, from 2pm-4.30pm and is aimed at accompanied primaryage youngsters, culminating in sessions for them to try a variety of woodland crafts.

The website also gives details of other events, from evening chorus walks with local naturalist Ed Drewitt to owl prowls and moth discovery evenings.

Meanwhile, local amateur photographers of all ages are being encouraged to take part in a photography competition based around the reserve.

The aim of the competition is to raise awareness of the woodland and inspire people to look more closely at the natural environment around them.

Entries close on August 31 and prizes will be awarded for the best photograph in each of three age categories - under-10s, 10 to 16-year-olds and adults.

Sightseers turned out for 235-tonne transformer’s slow journey to substation ONLOOKERS headed for motorway bridges and roadside verges to watch a massive transformer being carried on a low-loader to Iron Acton.

Allelys Heavy Haulage, contractors for National Grid, transported the 235-tonne piece of equipment to a substation as part of an upgrade project to ensure reliable power supplies.

The transformer - needed to change the voltage of electricity before it is transmitted through the power network - was carried on a 55 metre-long (180ft) heavy haulage lorry from Avonmouth docks to Iron Acton.

With a police escort and accompanying special haulage team, it travelled between ten and 15mph along an indirect route chosen to avoid hazards such as weak bridges and narrow turning points.

That involved using the M49, M4 and M5 northbound to the Stroudwater junction, where it turned at the roundabout to head south again to Falfield.

It then went up Tortworth Hill and through Cromhall and Rangeworthy to Latteridge and on to the substation, with traffic stopped when necessary to make room for the vehicle.

Summmer entertainment and popular beach return to Yate Shopping Centre

A PROGRAMME of entertainment has been launched at Yate Shopping Centre for the summer, with the popular central square beach back in the town once again.

Brand new shows and old favourites feature in the schedule, which runs until the end of August.

Effective action taken at Yate academy by new leaders leads to improvements SIGNIFICANT improvements have been made at Yate International Academy, with an education inspector highlighting “effective action” taken to help it become a good school.

James Sage from Ofsted said the changes made were having an impact, raising the achievement of pupils and improving their attendance and behaviour.

His comments come after the first monitoring visit to the academy (YIA) since it was assessed as being in need of improvement last October.

Mr Sage focused on areas identified for improvements, which related almost entirely to the secondary phase, but he also visited the primary school and nursery at Woodlands, which form part of YIA. He said there had been a wide range of highly significant changes to the leadership of the school since just before the autumn inspection.”

That included the arrival of Yate principal Paul Skipp and the appointment of the current senior leadership team, most of whom were new to the school.

Adam Williams became chief executive principal of the Ridings’ Federation of Academies, which runs YIA, only in February and a new head of maths joined in May. Mr Sage said: “One fifth of secondary teachers are new to the school this year, including

an almost completely new mathematics department.

“There is now stability in the teaching staff and no full-time teachers plan to leave the school at the end of this year.

“Further improvements have also been made in the primary phase under the continuing good leadership of the primary principal.

“A good programme of training has led to sustained improvements in the overall quality of teaching.

“However, senior leaders know that further improvement is required in some subjects and for some teachers. Teachers who showed a lack of willingness or ability to improve are no longer teaching in the school.”

Mr Sage said all leaders and governors had recognised the sense of urgency needed to improve the academy, realising the curriculum was “not fit for purpose”.

But achievement had now improved and pupils were better behaved around the school.

He said: “Pupils are polite and a pleasure to talk to. Senior leaders have worked successfully to create an ethos and culture in the school where pupils want to do well, feel safe, are valued and take a pride in their community.”

Mr Williams said: “We are really proud of the progress made in the academy in the last year.”

Reading Duke of Edinburgh Award challenge completed by Chipping Sodbury students challenge for A TEAM of students from Chipping Sodbury School completed an expedition as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award bronze challenge.

The year nine pupils walked for six hours a day to complete the exercise, following a planned route to checkpoints.

Qualifying expeditions for the award involve two days and one night, with the group camping for their overnight stop.

To complete the award, students also had to undertake a physical challenge, a volunteering placement and learn a new skill, ranging from cookery to dog training.

Some of the youngsters became more experienced with map reading and others said the challenge had increased their confidence.

A few of the students have also continued with their voluntary placements despite completing the award.

THE libraries in Yate and Chipping Sodbury are running events through the summer as part of the Big Friendly Read.

Youngsters are urged to enrol for the reading challenge, which runs until September.

More than 1,000 children have already signed up to read six library books. They will also collect Big Friendly Read cards from some of author Roald Dahl’s best-loved stories along the way to get a medal and certificate.

The aim of the challenge is to help children maintain their reading levels during the summer holidays.

This year’s challenge celebrates 100 years of Roald Dahl and the libraries will be running free creative activities sessions during the event.

Young chefs at Brimsham Green School cook up a treat in Rotary Club challenge Equine charity’s major cash boost from Badminton Horse Trials spectators PUPILS at Brimsham Green School, Yate, cooked up twocourse meals in a young chef competition supported by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club.

The eight food nutrition and health students had made their way through the contest’s heats to reach the final, which was judged by local experts Tom Herbert of Hobbs House Bakery and Ann Murray of the Cooking4 cookery school.

Each of the year-nine youngsters had two hours to create a healthy main meal and dessert, with at least one fruit or vegetable to be featured to meet the recommended five-a-day requirement.

The dishes also had to be the kind to appear on the menu in a themed restaurant.

The junior chefs devised main meals such as fish pie, chicken kebabs and cod with pea puree, while strawberry cheesecake, chocolate orange mousse and raspberry jelly were offered as desserts.

After assessing the entries,

Tom and Ann decided that Emily Bogie’s goat cheese and onion pizza, with apple pastry roses, met the competition’s criteria and awarded her the young chef 2016 title.

Tom, one half of the Fabulous Baker Brothers double act, said: “It’s really encouraging to see what talent we have rising through our local schools.

“The demonstration of skill and imagination shown at Brimsham Green is a taste of the

wonderful food to come.”

Teacher Adam Mills said: “I was really impressed with the outstanding quality and standard of the dishes presented. The students spent a lot of their time and effort ensuring the brief was met within the time limit.”

The other finalists were Laura Tomasin, Georgie Allan, Mia Thorpe, Joe Turner, Megan Walker, Jas Edwards and Owen Batchen.

WORLD Horse Welfare said it raised more than £25,000 as a result of being appointed charity of the year at the 2016 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.

The organisation said its link with the major event, which supports a different charity each year, was an overwhelming success.

Thousands of people visited its trade stand and cross country marquee over the five days of the event in May, while two displays in the main arena generated “a brilliant reaction” from those who watched them.

Young innovators impress judges at annual schools challenge MORE than 60 entries were received for a head to head between students from Brimsham Green and Chipping Sodbury schools in the annual Rotary Young Innovator Awards.

Pupils were judged in six categories at the competition held in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

Honours between the two schools were even, with Jordan Longdin from Chipping Sodbury School taking the overall young innovator title, while Brimsham Green’s Samuel Bidder won the the product design category.

There were also wins for Chipping Sodbury’s Zoe

Perry for textiles and Toni Graham in the senior product design category.Brimsham Green’s other winners were Nathan Ross in graphics and Charlotte Stephenson in food technology.

The event, run by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, relies on local sponsorship and volunteers who gave up their time to judge the event.Business backers included Renishaw, Rolls-Royce and Hanson, while the Chipping Sodbury Town Lands Charity was also a supporter.

A past winner of the challenge, Roxanne Pollard, is now a prototype engineer at Renishaw and she gave a

presentation to the entrants while judges considered their verdict’ Event organiser Keith Pattison said: “I first became involved in the event many years ago as a design and technology teacher and then later as a judge.

“After a gap of many years I had wondered if this event was still relevant in the 21st century. My conclusion after this event is a very resounding yes.”

Meanwhile, food technology judge Ann Murray from the local Cooking4 cookery school said: “I was impressed at the enthusiasm and skill of the students.”

Crib appeal made as plans progress for popular church festival

ORGANISERS of the annual nativity crib festival in Chipping Sodbury have appealed for exhibits to join those already promised.

It is expected there will be more than 150 cribs on display in St John’s Church during the event, which runs from November 30 to December 4.

They will come from all around the world, from many different cultures and will be made from a variety of materials.

Local schoolchildren will also have their own exhibits on show and the organising team will include workshops and storytelling in the five-day free festival.

Meanwhile, the donkeys that played a starring role last year are set to return on two of the days.

Event organiser Liz Gregson said: “They were very well behaved and loved the attention.’’ Anyone who would like to lend a crib to the church

Drought project asks families for help at tree measuring day in Chipping Sodbury FAMILIES are being invited to take part in a science event in Chipping Sodbury and help with a large-scale project on drought.

A team from the University of the West of England (UWE) will be at The Ridings in Wickwar Road on Wednesday, August 17, for a tree measuring day.

The event is part of the Drought Risk and You - DRY project, which aims to collect information on the effect of

drought to help those trying to reduce the risks it poses.

Those involved in DRY said drought and water shortages affected people’s lives by posing a significant threat to the UK’s environment, agriculture, infrastructure, society and culture. But activities such as measuring trees, learning about their environmental benefits and finding out what happens to them when water is in short

supply all help to raise people’s awareness of the problem.

Dr Patty Ramirez, a research associate on citizen science at UWE, said it was also helpful to hear people’s memories of local droughts and how they were affected by such incidents.

Anyone interested in getting involved should go along to The Ridings any time between 10.30am and 4pm. Tea and cake will be available.

Angling for newcomers to join fishing fraternity A FREE fishing event near Chipping Sodbury will be held to try and attract more people to angling.

The event has been organised by the Crosshands Angling Club and takes place at Ashlea Farm lake, Mapleridge Lane, off the B4060 Wickwar Road, on Thursday, August 18, from 1pm8.30pm.

No fishing licence is required to take part and experts will be on hand to advise on how to set up, bait and use a pole or rod.

There will be opportunities to ask questions and a chance to try out the latest equipment from event sponsor Drennan

International.

The event is supported by the Environmental Agency and coincides with a dedicated fishing month, when the activity

is promoted to people of all ages.

Washing basket on hob caused serious house fire in Yate

A PLASTIC clothes basket accidentally left on an electric hob caused a fire which severely damaged a house in Yate.

The terraced house in Edgworth was ablaze when Avon Fire and Rescue crews arrived on the scene.

Seven crews in breathing apparatus used two high pressure hose reels and three water jets to tackle the fire, which caused extensive damage to the ground and first floor of the house and also spread to the loft.

Adjoining homes suffered smoke damage but no-one was injured.

Two people treated by ambulance crews after house fire A FIRE in a house in Wickwar, near Chipping Sodbury, is thought to have started accidentally in a sauna room.

Two people were treated by paramedics for the effects of smoke inhalation at the scene after the incident in Station Road.

Three fire engines from Yate and Kingswood were joined by a fourth from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service after the blaze was reported at the two storey home. Firefighters in breathing apparatus used high pressure hose reels and jets to tackle the fire on the first floor.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said there was fire and heat damage throughout the first floor of the property.

The two people in the house at the time of the fire had managed to escape by the time crews arrived.

Lungworm is easily preventable Lungworm is a parasitic roundworm that infects dogs. The life cycle is split between the dog and slugs/snails. Immature worms, larvae, are passed in the faeces of dogs or foxes; they burrow into slugs and snails, and continue to develop. Dogs are infected by eating a slug, or even licking the slime trail (over a bowl or a toy that’s been left outside).

The mature infective larvae burrow their way from dog’s intestine into the bloodstream. Once there, they make their way to the pulmonary artery. Here they develop into adults, mate and lay eggs. The eggs hatch into larvae which make their way into the lungs, where they are coughed up, swallowed, and then passed in the faeces.

The distribution of Lungworm across the UK is very patchy; it was traditionally thought that there were higher concentrations in the South West and Wales but cases can appear anywhere really. Dogs which eat slugs and snails are at high risk.

Symptoms include: ● Coughing (65% of cases) ● Reduced ability to exercise, shortness of breath (43% of cases)

● Abnormal bleeding, bruises, nosebleeds, vomiting blood (35% of cases) ● Sudden collapse (26% of cases) ● Heart failure (rare) ● Migration of the larvae to other organs- such as the eye, brain, or liver where they cause damage resulting in blindness, seizures, or liver failure respectively.

The “gold-standard” test for diagnosis is identifying the larvae in the dog’s faeces, however, even in heavy infestations; dogs may not pass larvae every day, so at least five sets of faeces can be required. In recent years, a Lungworm Snap Test has been developed, which identifies specific proteins relating to lungworm in the dog’s blood. This is a rapid in-house test available at our practices.

Lungworm is easily preventable using specific spot-on treatments, available at all our practices and included in our Active health club. Treatment for active infections is also available but in very heavy infestations or where treatment has been delayed the disease can be fatal.

HUNDREDS of people enjoyed a free community event at Brimsham Park, Yate, with fun and games held in the sunshine.

A treasure hunt, fun dog show and a tug of war competition were among the attractions organised for the afternoon.

The Friends of Brimsham Park and Yate Town Council

organised the day, which is now set to be repeated in future years.

Deputy town mayor John Ford said: “Thanks are due to the organising team and volunteers for their hard work. We look forward to next year and the introduction of even more games and events.”

Mass Chipping Sodbury cycling event set to involve hundreds of riders UP to 1,000 cyclists are due to take to the roads from Chipping Sodbury in the annual Sodbury Sportive.

The bikes will be ridden on three routes going through a string of towns and villages on Sunday, August 21.

Riders will aim to complete journeys of 30, 60 or 100 miles, covering areas in South Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

The event is organised

by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club to raise funds for various charities and it said it would be distributing flyers about the event to shops, pubs and parish councils along the routes.

Although it also said the event was non-competitive “and thus not a race”, completion times for those taking part will be published.

The club also said riders would be briefed to abide by the Highway Code, to be courteous

to other road users and to take “utmost care” when passing horse riders.

Stuart Fraser, on behalf on

the club, said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may result on the day. No roads will be closed.”

Former quarry industry social club set for demolition in housing scheme HOUSE builders have drawn up a scheme to demolish the former Hanson Social Club in Chipping Sodbury and put nine homes on the site.

The club closed in January after operating for some 45 years, bringing to an end a facility that had been enjoyed not only by staff of quarry firm Hanson but also local people They had been able to meet up for a drink or play skittles, while the venue was hired out for parties, weddings and other functions.

But the building would not meet new standards due to come into effect in 2017 and the club could not afford to keep going after losing a subsidy.

Despite options being considered for the relocation of the club, it was reported that none were viable.

Now Newland Homes has submitted an application to built three and four-bedroom houses on the site in Barnhill Road, in an area which has been developed with housing and the Waitrose supermarket.

Youngsters get close to nature during activity day in ancient woodlands MORE than 100 members of Rainbow, Brownie and Guide groups from across South Gloucestershire joined an activity day in the Lower Woods nature reserve.

The event was organised by the South Cotswold Girl Guiding Division, which runs 33 units in an area that includes Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

Ancient Lower Woods on Inglestone Common, near Wickwar, are managed by the Gloucestershire and Avon Wildlife Trusts.

During the day, the girls went

on a nature scavenger trail, tried stream dipping and woodland craft, as well as enjoying a picnic.

The event also raised £635 for the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust.

Hopes for new playing fields at Shire Way as landfill site project returns to planners A LONG running proposal to develop playing fields on a landfill site in Yate is back on the agenda.

For decades there have been hopes of the project for land next to Shire Way Community Centre coming to fruition, with the facilities to be used by the centre.

But so far it has not progressed beyond being given planning permission.

Oaktree Environmental, consultants for the latest application - from Bristol and Avon Transport and Recycling - said: “The proposed development will enable the site to be used for a purpose which has previously been approved on more than one occasion but has yet to be implemented.”

The first time a scheme was drawn up for the green belt site was in 1992, with the most recent consent given in 2007.

The site is bounded on two sides by railway lines and by the community centre and Shire Way. Under the plan, there will be three full-size football pitches, a cricket pitch and six tennis courts, as well as a smaller football pitch for training or to host junior matches.

Recycled aggregate material and soil will have to be brought into the site if the project goes ahead to improve the land and cover it with topsoil.

Claire Young picks up Lib Dem baton from Steve Webb to fight parliamentary seat WESTERLEIGH councillor Claire Young has been chosen to fight the parliamentary seat for Thornbury and Yate for the Liberal Democrats the next time Britain goes to the polls.

She was elected in a ballot of members after former MP Steve Webb, who lost out to Conservative Luke Hall in last year’s General Election, recently announced he would not be trying to regain the seat.

Local Liberal Democrats said Councillor Young, who has represented the Westerleigh ward on South Gloucestershire Council since 2007, was chosen from a strong field of candidates.

She lives in Coalpit Heath with her family and is her party’s deputy leader on the council.

Councillor Young said: “The party locally has been going from strength to strength recently, with a massive influx of members, particularly young people determined to use their energy to help build the future for them and their families. The party now has more members than at any time in over a decade.

“I am humbled by the confidence people have placed in me. Over the years I have met so many lovely people working together for our community and I am really looking forward to my

changed role in that work.”

Mr Webb said: "I have known and worked closely with Claire for many years and she has been at the centre of all we have been doing with local people.

“I am delighted to be passing on the baton to someone who is as energetic and committed to

the community as Claire. I will be giving her my full support in the urgent work to be done to help our country and community.”

Ms Young has already launched her first major campaign, asking people to “Tell Claire” what they most want done to help them.

Bishop Rachel leads service in Chipping Sodbury to welcome new rector A NEW rector for the Sodbury Vale benefice was installed at a service in St John’s Church, Chipping Sodbury.

The church was full for the ceremony, which was led by the Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Rev Rachel Treweek, and marked

the arrival of the Rev Canon David Bowers to the community.

Canon Bowers will take responsibility not only for St John’s but also the churches and congregations in Horton, Little Sodbury and Old Sodbury.

He and his wife, Judith, a nurse, are both from Salford and

have two grown-up children.

Canon Bowers, a lifelong Manchester United supporter, was a civil servant before ordination, going on to work in parishes in Manchester, Bolton and Rochdale and then moving in 1998 to the Gloucester diocese

Yate supermarket bids for more time for Sunday deliveries

Quarry site open day brings in hundreds of visitors MORE than 500 people took the opportunity to visit Chipping Sodbury quarry during an open day at the site.

Visitors were taken deep into the quarry in shifts in a 50-seater coach to see how the Hanson site operated.

They watched a loading shovel and dumper trucks at work, were shown stone crushing

and screening equipment and viewed a series of displays from shot firing to fossils.

Landscape manager Alexandra Pick and geologist Adam Chapman explained how the quarry was set to be developed and showed the work being done to increase biodiversity.

Visitors also had the chance to see an asphalt paver and a moving floor articulated truck provided by the contracting division, a cement tanker and new concrete truck mixer.

Unit manager Colin White, quarry manager James Veakins and his team acted as guides, helped by colleagues from other Hanson sites in the area.

Mr Veakins said: “It took a lot of planning but with everyone pulling together, it was worth all the effort. The feedback from

the public was really positive.”

PLANS by supermarket giant Morrisons to extend delivery times to its Yate store on Sundays were being determined as Yate and Sodbury Voice went to press.

The store on Station Road applied to South Gloucestershire Council for permission to accept up to four deliveries by its own lorry drivers from 9am-4pm on Sundays.

The change would give the company an extra four-and-ahalf hours to deal with deliveries.

An existing condition limits them to 9am-11.30am.

Yate Town Council opposed the change, saying it would lead to noise and disturbance for people living near the store.

Nature reserve wins fourth award to become one of the best open spaces in the UK CONSERVATION volunteers have won their fourth consecutive award for the Wapley Bushes local nature reserve and orchard in Yate.

The area was the only site in South Gloucestershire to be recognised in this year’s Green Flag Award scheme, which is run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

But it was one of a record 1,686 winners in the UK to be highlighted as one of the best parks and green spaces in the country.

Wapley Bushes Conservation Group manages the site on behalf of Dodington Parish Council.

Parish councillor and group member, Paul Hulbert, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive the award for the fourth year running.

“This award recognises and highlights that people in Dodington parish and the surrounding area are benefitting

from a green space of the very highest quality.

“Our reserve is a mixture of flower-rich meadows, ancient woodland and younger plantations. We have managed it since 1992 and work closely with the Southwold group of the Wildlife Trust and with South

Gloucestershire Council, which provides us with very valuable advice and support.”

Fellow committee member Tim Fairhead said: “We aim for sustainable management of the reserve. We do not use pesticides or fertiliser and practice traditional woodland

management techniques such as coppicing.”

As well as being a popular location for local people of all ages to visit and enjoy, the site is also used for school environmental lessons.

The conservation group organises regular volunteer workdays and events at the reserve, commissioning work such as hedgelaying and pond reconstruction with the help of environmental grants.

The next event will be a bat walk on Friday, September 9, at 7.30pm, which is expected to be popular with families.

Although it has a team of volunteers, including residents, Wildlife Trust members and local councillors, to call on, new helpers are always welcome.

Commerce in Chipping Sodbury THE establishment of Victoria County History (VCH) projects has given a shot in the arm to local history.

Originally dedicated to Queen Victoria, the scheme is a record of England’s places and people from earliest times to the present day, with historians working on what is described as the greatest publishing project in English local history.

After the success of the Yate project, which provided the most detailed history of the parish ever written, researchers are now making great strides on a VCH for the three Sodbury

areas. Here, Jenny Smith gives a snapshot of some of the background to commerce in Chipping Sodbury.

COMMERCE is the reason this market town was created and designed in the 13th century.

Strategically placed for trade, it was at the crossroads of several routes, with the River Frome running along its northern boundary. Archaeological evidence of one or two tanneries has been found by the river.

In 1608, John Smith’s Men of Armour in Gloucestershire listed 104 men from the town with occupations that included leather workers, mercers, clothiers, fullers, weavers, tanners, curriers, a saddler,

shoemakers, glovers, bakers, butchers, carpenters, coopers, masons, smiths, tilers, victuallers and a cook.

Over time shops opened in front rooms of houses on the main streets, while outhouses of substantial properties were often used by businesses or as workshops. Long burgage plots behind the properties allowed this, especially those running down to the river when a supply of water was required.

Being in an agricultural area, shops evolved to serve the local community and scattered farmsteads and hamlets. The town was fairly self-sufficient, with several grocers, drapers, butchers and bakers. Trades such

as blacksmiths, corn merchants, candle makers and shoemakers were also represented.

One family business, Hudson’s, provided a full grocery service from mid-Victorian times until 1972, maintaining the traditional link between proprietor and customer in the shop and through weekly delivery rounds.

Shop ledgers give a snapshot of the business at that time, listing the name of customers, often their occupation and where they lived, as well as how they paid.

One entry dated 1867-9 recorded “Mrs Morgan, Yate bonnet maker – credit by bonnet making”. There were also: Mr Eyles, carrier, settled per carriage of goods £51 7s 10d.

Afew thoughts on recent events . . .

AS somebody who has worked in retail and lived in South Gloucestershire all of my life before becoming the local MP, the last few weeks have been eye opening. I could write a book about the events that have occurred since the 23rd June, but for now, I hope a few thoughts about the period will suffice.

On the morning of the 24th June I watched the referendum results with a few close friends and colleagues in my office in the Commons. It was clear in the early hours of the morning that it was a decisive vote to leave.

It felt seismic – a huge event in British political history, I could hear a helicopter hovering above Downing Street. David Cameron resigned shortly after 8am. I was sorry to see him go. I was exhausted, but managed to get about 90 minutes sleep before returning to work.

Monday 27th – The Chancellor did what he could to stabilise the markets, David Cameron made a statement to the Commons, and later I met likeminded MPs to discuss who the next leader of the Conservative Party should be. Things were moving fast.

Wednesday 29th - It is surprising how exceeding popular you very quickly become during a leadership contest. I met the leadership candidates in various rooms around the palace, pushing them on their commitment to our life chances agenda, which I see as being central to this Government’s mission.

Saturday 2nd July – I held a

stand at Thornbury Carnival, I was exhausted, and had large bags underneath my eyes. I spoke to a couple of hundred people about the contest, and the message coming back was pretty unanimous – ‘Please not Michael Gove - it must be Theresa May’.

Monday 4th – The first hustings of all 5 candidates was held in a large committee room in the Commons. It was packed, and so hot you could hardly concentrate on what the candidates were saying. I left having learnt nothing and with a large headache.

Tuesday 5th July – Voting was taking place. I can’t over-emphasise at this point how thick the air felt then. You could not go anywhere without getting stopped, or sit in your office without being phoned. There was a bizarre moment when someone started trying to convert me to support their candidate whilst I was trying to enter a bathroom. Needless to say, it didn’t endear me.

Monday 11th July – Theresa May became the new Leader of the Conservative Party in front of over 300 MPs, it was a great moment, a wave of emotion swept around the room at seeing her become our second female Prime Minister.

I do not imagine another period like it in my lifetime. I have not been able to do the last few weeks justice, there is simply too much to fit in. You will have to ask me about it sometime, but I am confident that the best person for the job was chosen. Theresa May will be an excellent Prime Minister.

Chipping Sodbury set to welcome cream of racing cyclists in Tour of Britain SPECTATORS are expected to pack the centre of Chipping Sodbury when top level cyclists race through the town in the Tour of Britain.

Sir Bradley Wiggins plans to be among the riders after returning from the Rio Olympics, with Mark Cavendish another of the big names due to feature.

The country’s premier stage race takes cyclists from Glasgow to London between September 4-11, with stage five reaching South Gloucestershire on Thursday, September 8.

Starting in Aberdare, Wales, at 11am, the route will take the pack into England and on to Wotton-under-Edge.

Having gone through the village of Kingswood, the spectacle will move swiftly on to Wickwar and along the B4060 into Chipping Sodbury.

Racers will then go up High Street and down Culverhill Road, past Chipping Sodbury School and out to Wapley.

The route continues past Westerleigh Crematorium and through Pucklechurch as the competitors make their way to Bath for the finish, which is estimated to be at 3.30pm.

Anyone who misses the stage will have a second chance of seeing the event on Saturday, September 10, when Bristol will host the penultimate day of racing.

The stage will include both an individual time trial and a circuit race, each starting on Durdham Downs.

Although final times have yet to be announced, the Bristol action is set to get going at about 10am for the time trial and about 2.30pm for the circuit race.

Students in Yate and Winterbourne join opera company to stage end-of-term production PUPILS at the three schools making up the Ridings’ Federation of Academies helped English Touring Opera stage a production about migrants.

The youngsters from Yate and Winterbourne international academies and the Woodlands primary phase in Yate were all involved in the end-of-year performance.

It was the first time since the federation was formed that the schools had joined up for such a project.

Over five days the opera company was in residence, working with 50 pupils to produce Sand, Surf, Snow.

It told how migrants made the journey from the Middle East to Europe, with some of the material coming from the pupils’ own ideas.

The students took on a variety of roles, from performers to technicians and as part of the on-stage band.

The week culminated in two performances at the Winterbourne Arts Centre

Battery powered cars steered to the finishing line in annual challenge for Chipping Sodbury students PUPILS at Chipping Sodbury School have had a long involvement with the annual Greenpower challenge endurance races for home-built battery operated cars.

They have experienced victory and defeat at the Rockingham race track in Northamptonshire, where cars must be driven economically for 90 minutes to ensure batteries last until the chequered flag.

Students take it in turns to drive, with other team members acting as pit crew.

The cars Rotary Racer and Chain Reaction - single-seaters built by pupils with help from parents and teachers outside lessons - were driven by separate Chipping Sodbury teams at the latest race day.

Here, year 12 student Louise Barnaby reports on the Rotary Racer team’s day on the track.

“AFTER a 4.30am start, the team arrived for an eventful and wet race day.

“The first Formula 24 race began with small gaps between the first few cars, so the tension was high. It was evident from the start that our batteries were not good, so we put the power down hoping they would last. Pit stops

went pretty well although much slower than the other teams, so we were depending on our car having better stamina than the others.

“In the end we finished second but with no time to celebrate, rushed our car into the pits for a gear change for the 24+ race.

“This is much faster with only one driver and we managed 4th place, just three seconds behind the car in third position.

“After another fast gear change, the rain began just in time for the next Formula 24 race.

“Our batteries were even worse this time and we were silently praying for them to last.

Despite putting our lightest driver in for the longest stint, they were failing rapidly. But we just managed to hold on until the end of the race and gained fifth place.

“Our school’s second entry, Chain Reaction, was hit by another car but with the help of engineering skills and gaffer tape, not too much damage was caused and the team continued racing.

“Well done to everyone who took part. It was a fabulous day.”

August – a mixed bag

A

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen.

ugust means the school holidays, often a mixed blessing! On the one hand life can be a little more relaxed, but then again, how do you amuse the kids without spending a fortune, especially if the weather turns chilly? The answer, do some baking!

Here is one of my favourite recipes to do with kids: scones.

Easy,inexpensive and much better than the shop bought ones. They’ll take a little longer to do with the kids, but the look of satisfaction on their faces as they taste what they’ve made is well worth it.

Smashing Scones Makes about 8 scones Ingredients: Self-raising flour - 225g (8oz) Butter - 40g (just less than 2oz) Milk or buttermilk - about 110 ml (4 fl oz) or a little more if needed A little beaten egg for brushing the tops of the scones To serve - strawberry or raspberry jam and thinly sliced strawberries when in season Here’s what you do: Preheat The Oven To 220C, Gas Mark 7 Grease a baking tray.

1. Put the flour into a bowl.

2. Quickly, using your fingertips, rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

3. Make a well in the centre and stir in the milk a couple of tablespoons at a time until you have a soft dough.

4. Turn onto a lightly-floured board, knead lightly to make

the dough smooth and then roll out, using a floured rolling pin using short, sharp movements.

5. Roll out the dough to about 3cm (1 inch) thickness. (This is important, scones don’t rise well if they are cut thinner.)

6. Put the greased baking tray into the oven to preheat.

7. Take the pastry cutter and bang it sharply so that it goes all the way through the dough.

Do not twist it or you will end up with misshapen scones.

8. Cut out as many scones as you can and then lightly knead the remaining dough together.

Use to make as many scones as you can -you should have about 6 large or 8 medium in total.

9. Lightly brush the tops with the beaten egg (don’t make them soggy!)

10. Place the scones on the heated baking sheet and bake near the top of the oven until they are golden brown and well-risen, about 12-14 minutes.

11. Cool on a wire tray and eat as soon as they are cool enough!

12. Spread with a little jam and fresh, thinly sliced strawberries. Yummy!

Use the Basic mix and add: ¾ level teaspoon each of mustard powder and salt to the flour If you like, add a good pinch of cayenne pepper and some chopped chives 125g (4 ½oz) grated mature Cheddar or a red cheese like Red Leicester cheese for good colour to the scones after you have rubbed the butter into the flour.

Bring dry ingredients together with 2 small eggs (lightly beaten) and 3 or 4 tablespoons of milk or buttermilk if needed, until you have a soft dough.

Charity track day raises thousands for Air Ambulance A CHARITY Track day at Castle Coombe has raised almost £3,000 for an air ambulance charity.

Car enthusiasts from the High Performance Volvo Club were supported by local dealer City Motors to raise £2,750 for the Wiltshire air ambulance.

Held annually, this year the not-for-profit charity event saw 160 participants from all over the UK attend the track-day event.

Volvo Car UK donated prizes for a raffle on the day which saw a special appearance of the Wiltshire air ambulance helicopter.

Town leaders and neighbours oppose plans for Chipping Sodbury restaurant PLANS to convert outbuildings at a 17th century house in Chipping Sodbury into a restaurant and function room are being opposed by neighbours.

Listed Vayre House in Hatters Lane would remain as a private home under the proposal, with the outbuildings and a swimming pool altered to provide the new facilities.

But South Gloucestershire Council has received objections from residents of neighbouring homes, including retirement bungalows, saying they would be disturbed by people leaving the restaurant and functions, especially at night.

Sodbury Town Council has also objected to the

scheme, saying it would lead to increased traffic in the locality and would have a potential impact on adjoining residents.

Its members further suggested that restaurants should be located in the town centre.

But documents supplied on behalf of applicant Karen Stallabrass said the outbuildings were in disrepair and the proposal would breathe new life into them.

Converting them would also allow the expansion of Ms Stallabrass’ existing catering business.

South Gloucestershire planners will determine the application at a later date.

TWO new solar farms operating in Yate and Moorend are raising money for South Gloucestershire Council and cutting its energy bills.

The solar panels were installed and connected on land next to the council’s offices in Badminton Road, Yate, and on a site between the M4 and the ring road in Moorend.

Carbon-free electricity generated by the combined schemes not only helps power the offices but the excess also earns an income by being sold back to the national grid.

The council anticipates that the power produced will be equal to that used by roughly 230 average-sized homes in the district during a year.

An estimated £10,000 will also be cut from its annual energy bills, with approximately £55,000 a year earned from feed-in tariffs.

HERE has been much discussion in the media about an increase in hate crime, particularly race hate crime, since the EU referendum.

Nationally it does seem that there has been an increase, but on a local level I have not seen an increase in reported race hate crime.

I have had members of the

public raise concerns with me about the possibility of such incidents going unreported and we do know that hate crime, whether on the basis of disability, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation or transgender identity, is underreported.

We as a police force actively encourage people to report any hate crime, as we have a zero tolerance towards these incidents. It is important that all groups understand that reporting hate crime to the police is essential in helping us stamp out this in society and for us to recognise where these incidents are happening.

We want anyone who feels that they have been a victim of hate crime or who has witnessed an incident to report it straight away by calling 101. Always call

999 in an emergency.

A further local issue reported to me has been vehicles with loud exhausts been driven at speed up and down Wickwar Road and St. Johns Way late at night. This is anti-social towards the residents due to the loud noise. Patrols have been increased in the area and Roads Policing and the speed enforcement unit have been notified about these issues and will be paying passing attention to these areas.

Driving at high speeds on these roads could have potentially fatal consequences and ruin many lives – including that of the driver and their family.

Please think about your actions before any accidents occur. If we catch you driving in a dangerous manner we have the powers to

seize your vehicles and deal with you for careless/dangerous driving so please think twice before doing it.

If any member of the public sees these drivers driving erratically then please record their registrations so we can speak to those persons involved. But rest assured we are actively trying to stop this from happening.

Classic car run on the right tracks with 200 entries raising cash for charity

SOME 200 classic and vintage cars set off from Chipping Sodbury on an annual tour of the countryside.

The popular Classic Car Run organised by the town’s Rotary Club was hailed as one of the most successful in its 21-year history.

In that time it has raised more than £100,000 for a variety of charitable causes.

Club president Reg Bleaden said he was pleased that so many people had taken the time to thank the organising team. There was also praise for the courtesy shown by drivers to horse riders along the route.

Those taking part said they passed through attractive scenery on a good rally course of 80 miles that took in parts of South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, ending in the grounds of Westonbirt School, near Tetbury, where lunch was served

Gauntlett heads for Gatcombe Park for feast of equestrian sport CHIPPING Sodbury rider Nick Gauntlett will be among an international field taking part in the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park.

He will run Cosmic Order in the intermediate championships at the prestigious event, which is held at the Princess Royal’s home in Gloucestershire from August 5-7.

Rivals for the intermediate title include former Badminton Horse Trials champions Lucinda Fredericks and Oliver Townend, Emily King - daughter of British

team veteran Mary King - and former Olympic and world champion Blyth Tait.

The festival will also host the feature British Open, which will incorporate a leg of the new Event Rider Masters series and has attracted several riders who just missed out on team selection for the Rio Olympics.

They include Britain’s Zara Tindall, reigning national champion Nicola Wilson and Izzy Taylor, as well as Australia’s Paul Tapner and Andrew Hoy. Meanwhile, South

Gloucestershire’s Harry Meade, based near Dyrham Park, has two entries in the advanced class.

Significant changes have been made to the cross country course, with a new water feature built at the bottom of the Avening Banks.

Spectators will be able to see cross-country action on the Saturday and Sunday of the festival, as well as dressage, showjumping and a host of arena attractions over the whole three days.

Summer success for young athletes

THE youngsters of Yate & District Athletic Club have enjoyed their most successful season for a number of years, Stuart Nunn writes. All four matches of the Youth Development League have been won by often massive margins, ensuring promotion to the Premier Division next season.

Doing this has meant beating local rivals Bristol & West, Team Bath and Blaenau Gwent on their home tracks as well as starting the season with a cracking win at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex.

This success has largely been down to the club’s efforts in putting out complete teams as far as possible. There will nearly always be gaps in athletics teams because of illness or injury but it is proved beyond any doubt that the most complete teams are always the winners. At the start of the season the club had no pole vaulters, so steps have been taken to get some young athletes interested in this most technical event and in the last match Theo Harper came out a winner.

Each team victory is made up of individual performances and efforts. The outstanding athlete of the season has been Abdi Hasan who has looked

unbeatable over 800m and has run the last leg in the 4x300m relay to bring the boys home in a club record time. Also outstanding have been a couple of under-13 girls: Willa Gibb and Poppy Clarke.

Willa hurdles so efficiently and fast that there are few girls her age who can match her.

The same is true of new discovery, Poppy Clarke, over 1200m, where she has finished streets ahead of any rivals.

Often it is a coaching group who shine, egging each other on to better performances This has been true this summer of the hammer throwing group coached by Matt Spicer. Four of his athletes competed in the national championships at English Schools, throwing massive personal bests in the process. In league matches they have won throughout and thrown discuses

and shots also to good effect. In those events James Viner has stood out, especially in the shot.

Amongst the jumpers, Abi Robson stood out in the high jump and Luke Hall in the long jump.

Next season will be a more challenging story. Young athletes grow and move into older age groups. As it happens this year this is particularly true of the girls. Team manager, Lesley

Nunn, has already begun the search for next year’s winning girls.

Meanwhile, the local Avon Track and Field League is just getting under way. The first match at YOSC saw the Yate athletes sweeping into a good lead. It remains to be seen how the other three matches will play out, but Yate & District must be favourites to win most of the trophies on offer.

Twirlers dazzle at resort to win national majorettes title MAJORETTES group Yate Star Twirlers were crowned national champions for their senior exhibition routine at a major fixture in Weston-super-Mare.

The winning performance was achieved at the National Association of Majorettes national championships.

Now the troupe will represent England at the European championships in October, to be staged in Crawley, West Sussex.

It will be the fourth consecutive year that the Twirlers will have qualified for the European final.

The group also returned home with other awards from Weston, including one for the best turned out troupe of the year.

Sodbury focussing on season’s end CHIPPING Sodbury Cricket Club enter the last phase of the season with all five senior sides still having plenty to play for.

The first team, captained by Jamie Rendell, have recovered from a slow start to make a real impact and go into their last five matches with realistic hopes of a top-four finish in the Gloucestershire division of the West of England Premier League.

A fine squad effort combined with an outstanding season to date by New Zealander Phil Lill has resulted in the strong position for the team. Lill has already scored more than 300 top-order runs and is closing in on 25 wickets with his off-spin.

Rendell has also made significant contributions with bat and ball. He is pleased with the development of a handful of younger players and said; “We’re learning a lot this season. It’s not always been easy going but the attitude of the players has been spot on and very encouraging.”

After suffering a particularly disappointing one-run defeat at home to Dumbleton the team reacted by winning their next three fixtures including two tight finishes.

Rendell said; “This division is absolutely wide open this season, there’s no dominant side as there has been in previous years and

just about everyone is capable of beating everyone else. There’s a tremendous amount to play for in the last third of the season.”

Sodbury have two forthcoming home matches, entertaining Lydney on August 13 and Hatherley & Reddings on August 27.

Sodbury 2nd’s, under the leadership of the experienced Jerry Swatton, are pressing hard for promotion from Division Three of the Gloucestershire County League.

It’s the club’s first taste of this competition and Sodbury and Hatherley & Reddings 2nds have been fighting it out for much of the summer for top spot with Shurdington and Great Rissington still in the mix.

Key dates for the seconds in the climax to the summer include a home derby with Rockhampton on August 6 and a potentially crucial clash away to Hatherley on August 27.

Chipping Sodbury 3rds, led this summer by Steve Febry, are sitting comfortably in mid-table in Division Seven of the Bristol & District League and are looking to push on in the final third of the season.

They have home games at the Ridings on August 6 against Bristol United Banks and Gordano Valley on August 20.

In Division 11 Sodbury 4ths have endured an extremely difficult start to the season often competing against second XIs. Damian Frodsham’s squad of young bucks managed to catch their breath and have pulled themselves up the table aiming for a top-half finish.

Sodbury 5th’s in Division 16 have topped the table for long spells of the season under the captaincy of club legend Richard Deane, but face a testing end to their campaign with Twyford House 3rd’s and Bohemians 3rd’s also gunning for the title.

Naomi Forecast made Chipping Sodbury history when she became the first female player to score a half century. Naomi, in her first season at the Ridings, finished on 51 not out for Sodbury 4th’s who went on to overcome Bradley Stoke 3rd’s by 18 runs in a high-scoring league thriller.

New manager as season looms for Yate Town YATE Town FC starts the 20162017 season under new manager Polly Britton and with several of last seasons squad retained and some new blood.

They kick off on August 6th with an away match at newly promoted Barnstaple Town followed by a home tie against Shortwood United on the following Tuesday. They then look forward to three successive home Saturday matches.

Seven of last season’s first team have returned to Lodge Road including Darren Edwards, Camen Harvey, Mayson Evans, Nathan Gore and Josh MorganWilliams. Mitch Tippins, injured in the opening game of last season has also re-signed and has been training hard with a view to regaining full fitness as

quickly as possible.

Britton has used the preseason friendlies to assess the merits of potential new talent following the departure of several players in the close season. After impressive displays new signings include; midfielders Kyle Thomas and Kye Mountford, and keeper Kane Mannings; all very experienced at Southern League level. Former Bristol Rovers Academy players Tom Fry and Trey Anderson are also amongst the new additions to the squad.

More than twenty players were used in Yate’s opening three friendly matches with Eugene Keary scoring Town’s goal in a 3-1 defeat at Bristol Manor Farm.

Town in which Yate created numerous chances but were unable to find the net in a 2-0 defeat.

The third pre-season match, a local derby at Chipping Sodbury Town, proved to be a very competitive match enjoyed by a good sized crowd. Josh Morgan-Williams gave Yate the lead on the stroke of half time after excellent work from Darren Edwards with the home side equalising late in the second half.

Yate’s Youth team fixtures have also been announced but they will not start their competitive programme until September. Their opening game is likely to be an FA Youth Cup tie against New College Swindon at Lodge Road.
